The Boxes

Sunny sat at her coffee table in the newly rebuilt lighthouse, looking over some of her father’s old things. He had a lot of old spell books that would need to be put back into production for unicorns to study.

Sunny herself had already read most of them many times growing up, so she knew the spells by heart. It was odd having a real horn instead of a paper one like she used to wear as a filly. She practiced all the spells she knew, trying them out and being elated when she got them right. When looking over her father’s old things, she had come across a name for what had happened to her upon bringing magic back to pony kind.

Sunny Starscout had become the first alicorn in magic knows how long.

Her father’s journal mentioned the death of the final alicorn sometime around the late 1500’s-ish. Sunny wished her dad was here to explain all this to her. He knew so much more then she did about ancient equestria, the alicorns, and magic in general.

*KNOCK KNOCK*

There was a rapping at her door.

“Coming!” The orange pony shouted, hopping up to quickly answer the door.

“Hey, Izzy! What is it?” Sunny asked, stepping back to let her friend in.

“Alphabittle and Queen Haven have something they wanna show you, they told me to get everyone who helped you bring magic back.” Izzy said, uncharacteristically serious.

“Ok, do they want me to bring my fathers things like last time?” Sunny asked, tilting her head. Last time those two had come to show her something, it was an old journal of one of the last ponies with magic from about 300 years ago.

“Probably a good idea, I’ll meet you there with the others.” Izzy said, rushing off towards the police station.

—Line break—

Once Sunny had gathered the things she needed, she headed to the town hall. Alphabittle and the queen were waiting for her.

“Hello your highness, Alphabittle.” Sunny said, bowing low in greeting.

“Sunny, how many times have I told you? Call me Haven, dear.” Haven said, smiling at the orange alicorn.

Sunny smiled back. The three sat in comfortable silence while they waited for the others to get there.

“Hey, we’re here now. What is it you wanted to show us?” Hitch said, quirking an eyebrow.

“Well, I was looking for some gems for a replacement crown, when I saw some strange boxes. They had odd writing I could not read, so I brought it here for Sunny to examine.” Haven said, gesturing to the different sized boxes on the table in the middle of the room.

There were 4 large boxes.

The first being a pale yellow color, decorated with what looked like sun glyphs of some kind.

The next, a deep midnight color, covered in stars and clouds.

The third, a pale pink, covered in hearts and crystals.

The fourth box was a dark purple, covered in pale gold writing of some kind.

There was one more medium sized box, it was a plain blue with one large word on top, but it was hard to make out.

Sunny stepped up to the first box, looking at a small plaque with writing on it. Her eyes flew open wide as she leapt into the air, wings catching her on descent.

“Oh my god!” She exclaimed, looking frantically through one of the many bags she had with her. She pulled a large tome out of it and began flicking through the pages with her magic, multiple other books raced out of their bags and floated around her.

She looked at the plaque one more time before a look of excitement came on her face.

“The writing on these boxes is ancient equestrian! I have a translator guide for the letters here.” She said, leaning down to get a better look. She focused on the first box with suns on it, looking back and forth between her book and the box. Her eyes widened, and she smiled.

This process continued as she looked at all the boxes, her eyes getting bigger and her smile wider. By the final box she was hovering in mid air from pure excitement.

“Well? What do they say, Sunny?” Alphabittle asked, moving towards her.

“Oh it’s just amazing! These were personal items of the 4 princesses of equestria!” She exclaimed, smiling at the gray unicorn.

“This box,” she gestured to the box with the suns “was once Princess Celestia’s!”

“And this one,” the box with stars “ belonged to Luna!”

“This was Cadence’s!” The pink box.

“And this one,” the purple box “ was once Princess Twilight Sparkle’s!” Sunny said, bouncing from joy.

“That’s amazing, Sunny! But what about the plain blue box, what’s that one?” Haven asked.

“I’m not quite sure, it just says “HARMONY” on the top of it. It seems to be much older then the other boxes. All of them have holes for a horn on them, I assume it’s some kind of lock. Because of who they belonged to, they must be keyed to only work with alicorn magic.” She said, squinting her eyes at the hole on the first box.

“But, how do we open them then? We don’t have any “alicorns”.” Zipp said, disappointment lacing her words.

“Oh, but we do. What do you think I am?” Sunny said, spinning around, her wings open to their fullest and her horn a blaze with golden magic.

“Wait, does that make you royalty? If the princesses were alicorns, then shouldn’t you be a princess too?” Pipp asked, a wary look on her face.

“Well, back then, yes. I would have become a princess. But now that’s not how it works. You’re the only royalty here, Queen Haven.” Sunny said, slightly bowing to her.

“Sunny, dear, I think you’ve earned it. You brought our magic back to us. That’s cause for a reward, and I think the title of Princess suits you very much.” Haven said, placing a hoof on the orange pony’s shoulder.

“But, what would I be a princess of? I have no idea how to rule!” Sunny exclaimed, a panicked look on her face.

“We’ll figure that out later, why don’t you try opening the boxes? Wouldn’t you like to know what’s in them?” Haven said, turning towards the items in question.

Sunny brightened up at that, trotting back over to the first box. She lit her horn with a simple unlocking spell, and inserted it in the lock. Everyone waited with baited breath as they waited for the lock to open.

There was a soft click, and the lid popped open slightly. Sunny continued this process with the other 4 boxes before going back to the first. She carefully opened the top, and gasped at what she saw.

“T-this is…. This is Celestia’s royal attire!” Sunny shouted, rushing around to the other boxes and opening them up. 3 held the same contents as the first, while the last held 5 necklaces.

“Oh my god this is amazing! Look how tall Celestia must have men to have fit this!” Sunny said, lifting the golden shoes out of the box and placing them on the ground. The shoes were very large, the very tip of one coming to Sunny’s chest.

“Hey, the one’s in the purple box look like they’d fit you Sunny.” Pipp said, motioning to the box.

Sunny lifted the items out of the box and slipped her hoof into the first shoe. It was a perfect fit. She put on the rest of the shoes, and they fit too. She grabbed the necklace and clasped it around her neck, it felt like it was made for her. Before she could put on the crown, Haven grabbed it.

“Here, let me put this on for you. You should be crowned properly.” The lilac Pegasus said, smiling.

“On this day, I, Queen Haven of Zephyr heights, bestow upon you, Sunny Starscout, the title of Princess of equestria! All hail Princess Sunny!” Haven said in a very joking, yet official manner. She placed the crown on Sunny’s head, and smiled at the new princess.

Sunny turned to the rest of the room and held her head high, a smile on her face. Her friends bowed to her, smiling. They all shared a laugh at how silly it all was.

“Well, Now that that’s over, I guess I should put this stuff away.” She said, taking off Princess twilight’s things and setting them back in the box. Sunny closed and locked the boxes back up, before turning to queen Haven.

“Would it be alright if I took these? So I can document and research them of course.” Sunny asked, a hopeful smile on her face.

“Of course, dear. It was my intention for you to have them when I brought them here. I need to return to Zephyr heights before I’m missed too much.” Haven laughed.

“Right, we’ll, I hope to see you in a few days to let you know what I find out about this stuff.” Sunny said, nodding her head to the queen.

“By the way, Sunny, before I go. I was serious about making you the ruler of equestria. You’re the one who blessed us with magic again, and we need somepony who knows what friendship really is, like you do, to lead us into a new era of peace. When you come to see me in a few days, I want to show you a plan for your coronation.” Haven said, smiling.

Sunny didn’t protest anymore, she knew the queen was right. Equestria needed someone to lead, and she was the pony for the job.
