Prologue: The Nightmare Begins
One night at Camp Everfree, when nearly every student was asleep, dreaming pleasant dreams about what they would do and about how much fun they were going to have, one person stayed sleepless. Twilight Sparkle was afraid. Afraid she’d have a dream of Midnight Sparkle taking over her body again, robbing everyone's magic in the process.
"I won't fall asleep, I won't let her influence me again," Twilight told herself, determined to keep herself awake.
Five hours had passed since then, and Twilight looked horrible. Her eyelids became heavy, and large bags over her eyes began to form. Her skin was a pale purple, and she shifted from one uncomfortable sitting position to another, basically trying everything she could to resist the urge to sleep.
She had consumed coffee, energy drinks, pills, really every beverage she could think of (and find), but nothing worked.
Twilight was beginning to feel her eyes closing, and her movements slowed down, becoming sluggish.
"No! I will not let her win, I will stay awake. I will not let her win, I will...I," Twilight trailed of, still trying to fight the urge to sleep, but soon her body succumbed to its exhaustion, and she fell off the tree stump she had been sitting on and into a deep sleep.
Sunlight shone in Twilight’s face, as she and Sunset were working on one of the tents. Suddenly she heard a noise directly above her, and thus looked up. A little white kitten sat there on a tree branch. “It must have climbed up and got stuck,” Twilight thought, and then climbed up the tree until she finally got to the branch the kitten was residing on.
"You're going to be alright little kitten, I got you,” Twilight said. “I'm going to get you down from there.” She reached for the kitten, but when she did so, it suddenly spoke in a shrill voice.
After a while, the kitten’s screeching faded into actual comprehensive sentences. "I don't want to get down, I want to get out!". It turned its head, revealing one large purple eye. Then the camp-site started to deform until it was nothing but a black void of nothingness.
Twilight screamed in panic, "Midnight Sparkle, leave me alone!", but when she turned around, she realized it wasn't Midnight Sparkle who had spoken to her, no, it was something else, something different. The tree she clung on transformed into a freakish entity she had never seen before. It had one purple eye, purplish skin, and looked like its neck had been snapped backward. Then, the entity slowly spoke.
"Always playing the hero. So much wasted potential. Do you want to be actually helpful? Then let. Me. Out!" The entity shrieked, as it dropped a screaming Twilight into the deep dark void.

Twilight woke up, still screaming. Her eyes were the size of pinpricks. She breathed heavily, and when she looked around to see that no one had been awakened by her screams of terror, she tried to clear her head. She attempted to understand what she had just seen, but couldn't form one rational thought since she was just too panicked to think straight. All she could see was the dark creatures' purple glowing eye, which seemed to be staring directly into her soul. She quickly found herself a glass of water, and after drinking it, she could finally calm down. "What was that? And what does it want? Why did it say what it just said? Could it harm the other girls? Could it come for me, even when I'm awake?” Twilight’s train of thoughts was interrupted, as she exclaimed a quiet “Oh my god”, when she remembered how that...thing actually looked. Saying that she was terrified would be an understatement, she was truly horrified. She knew it was more dangerous and murderous than Midnight Sparkle ever could be. Now, going to sleep was completely out of question, she just didn't have the energy to sleep anymore. All she did for the rest of the night was crying in fear of the dark creature inside her head, while it was diabolically laughing at her from within her mind.
