Baby Deer Care

View Online

In the middle of December, the snow has finally arrived once again. While it is a sign that the holidays are coming, it still gave people a lot of stress shoveling their driveways clear. When it comes to animals, hibernation is most important to keep them around all year. However, sometimes animals don’t always stay safe on their own, in the outdoors.

It’s been an hour since Canterlot High is done for the day. Most of the students stayed to either complete their exams or get their belongings. Fluttershy stayed because she got a text from Sunset Shimmer that she left her notebook in one of her classrooms. After she finished feeding the animals in animal welfare class, she walked in the hallways to find her friend’s notebook.

Meanwhile back at Fluttershy’s place, Sunset, Rainbow and Applejack are waiting until Fluttershy returns, so they can make gingerbread men for their friends back at school. Fluttershy gave Sunset her key to get inside her house so she and the others can warm up inside. They all wait in Fluttershy’s bedroom while Sunset is looking at her phone, waiting for Fluttershy to text back.

“When is Fluttershy gonna get back?” Applejack asked.

“She’s still at school finding my notebook.” Sunset replied.

“How did you forget your notebook?” Rainbow added.

“They’re were so many homework assignments, our teachers are trying to keep us sidetracked. But I also forgot we have a test tomorrow and all the information I wrote was in that notebook!”

This made Rainbow and Applejack rolled their eyes. After so many years in Canterlot High, they always go through this situation no matter what.

“Ugh!” Rainbow retorted. “Does Principal Celestia and her teacher friends always get everything out of the way before this year’s out? Homework plus pop quizzes?”

“You need to understand that they’re going to miss us until January.” Applejack replied.

“So they always make us do these assignments. Principal Celestia really wants us to get great grades.” Sunset looking at her finished homework. Just when she’s about to take out her unfinished homework, a sound came from her phone. She looked at it and it’s a tweet from Fluttershy. “Fluttershy found my notebook and she’s heading out the door now.”

Both Applejack and Rainbow Dash are happy to hear the good news from their sweet friend who’s nice enough to help out. The only thing they’re looking forward when she returns is to finally make the gingerbread men.

Back at Canterlot High, Fluttershy heads out the front door with Sunset’s notebook in her backpack. She looked at the snow covering the ground while more snowflakes are coming down. Winter isn’t one of her favorite seasons of the year, but she found it a nice time to see more things in the environment.

She walks on the clear, but slippery sidewalk to head back to her place. It may be several blocks away but she did walk a few times before, to which she didn’t mind at all.

“I can’t wait to hang out with my friends and to go holiday shopping soon, so I can give my loving animals the gifts they deserve.” Fluttershy said to herself. She’s really in the mood to help her friends to bake their gingerbread.

For the next five minutes while walking, the right side of the sidewalk has a forest with so many trees in the way. Just when Fluttershy is getting close to her home, her geode starting to react. She became confused since this never happened when she’s in the neighborhood where animals don’t always appear.

She placed her hand by her ear to hear the sound where the animal is at. She closed her eyes to see the animal in the location it’s at. Thanks to her magical powers, all she can see is a huge pile of snow in the center of the forest while the noise is coming underneath.

“Oh dear!” Fluttershy opened her eyes. She turned to her right and enters the forest where the sound is coming from. After by passing the trees, she saw the pile of snow she saw and immediately dig up the snow with her hands. Once the animal is revealed in Fluttershy’s view, she’s really shocked. It’s a small deer who couldn’t get out of the snow that was covering it.

Fluttershy had no idea that a deer that’s by the neighborhood who’s also a baby. “Oh my goodness!” She cried. She had no more words of how cold the baby is. It has no hibernation instinct without her family, it’s all alone during the winter that will get progressively worse with each day that passes. But Fluttershy refuses to leave the deer alone to have it’s body freeze. She dug out more of the snow and picks up the deer as she rushes back to her place.

Sunset and the others are worried since Fluttershy is taking longer to return but eventually, the front door opens, revealing Fluttershy and the deer in her arms. This made Sunset and the others were surprised to see an animal freezing in Fluttershy’s arms.

“Fluttershy, is that a deer?” Applejack pointed at the animal.

“Yes and it needs help.” Fluttershy replied as she rushes to her bedroom.

Sunset and the others follow her, even if they’re supposed to bake the gingerbread men together, they still respect Fluttershy’s way of saving animals, especially since she’s happy that she found her notebook.

When Fluttershy enters her bedroom, she takes the baby deer and tucks it into her bed to warm itself. While the deer is still shaking, Fluttershy placed her hand on it’s head.

“You’re going to be fine.” Fluttershy smiled. “While I find a way to find your parents, you can stay here for awhile.”

Sunset and her friends enter the room while they see the deer again. “Where did you find him?” Rainbow asked.

“He was stuck underneath a pile of snow. My geode gave me hearings that he was moaning in sadness.” Fluttershy looked at the baby deer again. The deer can’t even get a hold of itself after how many hours he spent outside in the winter.

“He really looks worse than I thought.” Sunset commented. She made her way on the other side of the bed so she can get closer to the deer. In order to get an resolvement, Sunset grab the deer’s hoof to see in his mind.

Sunset saw the baby deer playing with other deer at his age along with his mother and father. She then saw that they left the forest which leads to the neighborhood which it’s rare to see these types of animals out in the open. The baby deer Fluttershy found got lost after the group split up in different places. As it turns out, it had been days since the deer was all alone and eventually, when the snow came down where the deer was trying to sleep, it came off of the trees and landed in a pile on him.

Sunset let go of the deer and became surprised. “What did you see?” Fluttershy wondered.

“Not much. But all I know is that he got left behind. I’m sure we can find a way to have him reunited with his parents.” Sunset being truthful.

This made Fluttershy sigh in relief to think there was no way at all to save the poor deer’s life.

“So what are we going to do now?” Applejack wondered.

“There could be an animal shelter building in town where they can drop off where all the deer live in the forest nearby.” Fluttershy offered.

“Why don’t you two take this deer there right now? We promised we will bake the gingerbread men.” Sunset added.

Rainbow Dash and Applejack didn’t expect this to happen’ but they know that all animals aren’t the same. In order to make them live in a natural environment, they must stay on land or in the ocean while also leaving them alone in peace. Applejack takes the deer out of Fluttershy’s bed as she and Rainbow leave so they can get to their location to save the deer.

Sunset notice that Fluttershy didn’t flinch when the animal she rescue left her house. “Hey Fluttershy, aren’t you feeling a little sad?”

“No.” Fluttershy shook her head. “It’s just I never saw a baby deer in this situation before.”

“Being left behind?”

Fluttershy nodded to her friend’s response. “I may have encountered deer before, but this feels like a first to me. I would’ve taken care of the baby, but I knew it wasn't right. His mother and father didn’t want to make the risk of getting caught by animal control and that’s the only thing I go against. If they did find the baby before I did…”

Fluttershy stopped herself since what she’s about to say it’s one of the things she hates in the world, and also makes her depressed. Sunset easily caught up on her friend’s solution and also impressed to see Fluttershy doing the right choice.

She gave her a hug, much to Fluttershy’s surprise. “You have so many things you keep to yourself.” She smiled.

“Really?” Fluttershy blinked when Sunset broke the hug.

“Yes. I have never seen you do that for an animal’s life. You didn’t even name the baby.”

“Well the deer still had parents, if it didn’t then I would.” Silence accorded in the room when Sunset is stunted from Fluttershy’s choice of words. She then unzipped her backpack and took out Sunset’s notebook “Anyway…here’s your notebook.”

Sunset happily took the notebook from her friend. “Thanks Fluttershy, I can always trust you.”

This made Fluttershy blush. “That’s what friends are for.”

“And to take care of animals you love so much.” Sunset smiled.
