> The Journal > by mrmidnight > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- > chapter 1 > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Laying in the destroyed mound of smoldering steam and coal, played a long line of trenches that had been there for over a year, just standing there. It was clear that they were laid undisturbed. While the ponies paid to go over and move past all them to retrieve what was left Bio’s journal Day 50 It’s been fifty days since I joined the great war of the shade. It’s bizarre how Sombra had managed to return. However, he led to; It uses to be Celestia would send the Elements of Harmony to stop them. Takedown the great villain and save the world. Sadly, though this time it failed. They had fallen the Pillars of our society failed us. So, we had no choice but to go to war ourselves. I’m no one impressive, I’m a Unicorn, born in south Manehatten green hair, bright blue eyes, but those had Darken after a while. The days have been long, Life has been slow, but we push on. There hadn’t been much news from general Dash, one of the few survivors of the elements. She barely survived leaving with one wing, the only other’s that could be confirmed was Applejack, who no longer had an eye on one side, and pinkie pie. Whom I suspect will never have a puffy mane again. We watch out, waiting for something to happen. Though like most days, it was nothing but silence. I sometimes wonder what would’ve happened if they had won. I wish, but you can’t change the past it seems. Sometimes I wish I could I’m writing this in bed, and it’s getting late, in all honesty, I’m close to heading to bed, though soon enough I’ll be waking up for guard duty, We need to protect the land for Celestia, for Luna, for all Equestria. We can’t lose too much we’ve got to hold the front line. As I’m writing this, I can’t seem to help but look over towards my rifle and spear. Some days I find it odd that we have those now, or we even need to use these. Times have changed. Like I write not too long ago it’s getting late, So it’s best that I head to bed. So another day another night. Day 55 It’s been five days since I wrote in this journal, and there hadn’t been much to do, though admittedly I’ve been hearing the sounds of grunting off in the distance. It seemed odd, but we ignore it. Nothing about it was weird. In truth, I imagined that it could’ve been Timberwolves. We’ve seen them, and in fact, they were acting rather odd, as of late. Like it has always been weird. Though it’s like, Dusk storm, has been working in the barracks, and nearly caused an explosion. From what he told me, he was putting some of his things away knocked over some grenades. The son of a bitch is lucky he didn’t blow us up. No one had gotten hurt, though we made sure that Dusk learned his lesson he was going to be scrubbing the toilets with his toothbrush for a good while. Maybe even a month. To get him to learn his lesson. Day 58 Somehow everything was getting weirder. I can’t tell you why but every day we’ve been feeling as though something watching us. Our every movement, though it seems as though something or someone is doing it. We’ve sent private Wilhelm out there, hunting off he’s our best tracker. It’s not even that though we hear stuff growling and groaning. At one point I thought I also listened to my name-calling out, though it must’ve been the wind I’m pretty sure of it. I somewhat hope so. Though it is a weird few days. However, maybe it’s just the war getting to me. After all, I’ve been in the army for over 55 days, so it’s changing, I know I have. I’m not the same kid I was before I joined. Celestia, I hope the war would be over with soon. I’m watching the field, and I think I see someone. I think it’s Wilhelm. ~~~ Willhelm got back here. He looks week like he was running, I was surprised as he gasped more, saying, he saw shades, He saw shades. It’s strange though we hardly understand what he means by it. If I remember correctly. Most shades were in the north. I don’t think any had seen them before down south. Since they prefer being in colder weather. Maybe it was just Wilhelms imagination. I’m sure of it; he probably hit his head on a branch. Our commander demanding his head be checked out. Day 62 Somehow nothing has happened, and it’s getting annoying, My mind has dulled while sitting here, I wanted to write in the journal but what could I write there’s nothing. Nothing is going on, Not even messages from the princess. We haven’t gained any land or lost anything. It feels like we’re in silence. Wilhelm was in the medical center ever since. We don’t know what's wrong he’s been puking groaning. Everything you might think about it you’re seeing it. Day 65 I hate to say it though after three day’s Willhelm died, succumbed to his illness, it’s insane, and we don’t even know how it happened. The medic’s said it happened at midnight, when his heart gave out. We’ll be buring him, though it’s sad to see him go, the guy had a hilarious scream. But I can’t really think of what it was that got him. Though really, We should burn the body. Who knows what could happen. But commander hard stone. He felt it would be disrespectful for the dead. So we agree to just bury him. I’ll be informing the family, and sending a letter. We’ve got a carrier pigeon to send them off. I wish we could use Pegasus, just to deliver the message but we need everyone we can here. Incase there was an attack. We could have them in the air for an airiel strike. We’ve also sent a message out to the princess letting them know about the mysterious circumstances of his death. Maybe she’ll send some reinforcement it’s hard to tell. Day 66 Oh god something went wrong. It’s no way this could’ve happened but, it did happen, Willhelm’s body has gone missing. We where about to bury the body. When private stone, went to get his body, it was gone, just gone. No one knew where it went, or who took it. I mean where could a body even go? Who would take it anyway, he was just an earth pony. So even if he was taken for any magic they wouldn’t be able to get anything. It’s insane. But what are we going to tell his family I mean we lost his body. Day 70 Oh god this isn’t good, how was this even possible. Now normally yeah that would be a good thing found the body we can bury it… that’s the thing though, we found his body, and he wasn’t dead. Well, that’s not good ether cause its clear that he’s not alive ether, he’s somewhere between that. It’s crazy, but what he did next was attacking one of our men. But before he could cause any harm, Private Stone managed to put him down, but it took a good few rounds. He took him towards the grave we made him before, and buried him. It wasn’t as nice as it was before. Most of the men didn’t moarn for him. They just looked at the grave. Before walking off burying him. I volunteered. Sometimes you just needed to show some respect for the dead, and that was something I planned on doing. Standing there, I began using my magic shoveling the firt over his body. Even with magic it took hours. At least that’s what it felt like, while I moved it over, time seemed to slow down but I began hearing something. It was long it was cold. It didn’t sound like anything that could’ve been pony or beast, it was something not of this world. I Looked off as I stared toward where the sound was coming from, and I could see what looked like white eyes slowly coming in closer. You’re wondering what I did, how I made it out there, I will tell you it wasn’t a display of heroism, I turned around and got out of there. Heading back to the Trenches. Day 71 It’s the next day but it’s clear that life isn’t getting back to normal, Everyone’s been freaking out. Doing their best to keep a brave face but It’s clear that they’re dreading what might be coming soon especially with what I said as soon as I got back. There’s something out there, I’ll have to put this journal down, we’ll discuss this more, Somedays I feel like your my only friend. Oh god, ok no time to say even what time it is that I’m writing this about! The most I can say is we’re in trouble, they’re coming its an group of them at first slowly swaying in coming in closer, as they move one by one. They look nothing like average soldiers but they showed up in a thick grey mist, One of the soldiers I don’t know which one, shoat at them hitting them point blank in the chest. The only reason we could tell, was the shadowed figured feel back on its back, before slowly getting back up. Shrugging it off like it was nothing. They just kept coming up to us. That was until. I took aim, going for the one closes and shot at it, and shot it straight at it’s head. I managed to hit it, right there. It fell backwards and it seemed to stay down completely dead. The rest still came after up. But we marched on shooting them, we aimed for the head. They rolled over taking their time, the groaning and moans. Still it sound like it was otherworldly. We shot faster, taking aim, sure a few of us missed, even I didn’t get them in the head. Officer Hole, shot over and just kept shooting him in the chest a few times before it fully went down. The dozen of them that came after us roared, loudly before it seemed their finally ended. When the fog finally went away A group of us investigated it, and there we found them the bodies. Now some of our men, couldn’t help but gag, and even one of them puked when we looked at them. But we came to realize these people that attacked us were innocent men, and woman, even a few children. Though what made it worst was they looked like they were decaying, falling apart. They looked like they had been dead long before we took a shot at them. It was there I finally realized what these people were. It reminded me of something my grandfather once told me. “They groaned, they stirred, they all uprose, Nor spake, nor moved their eyes; It had been strange, even in a dream, To have seen those dead men rise." It was simple, I’ll never forget those words as he told me that as a small child. When I asked him what those were and even what he ment he simply looked at me dead in the eyes exclaiming. “Those are the signs of Zombies my dead body zombies! You can shoot them rip them apart, though the best way of putting the dead back into the ground is by the brain!” He told me that with a smile. I sure miss the old man. Ok I need to focus. When I realized what was going on I call out to them all to get back, get back towards the trenches. We’re exposed, and I knew that there would be more. This was too small of a group, and with that scream, I;m sure more would be invading after us soon. They listened for the most part begrudgently as they ran back to the trenches. I reached over taking my riffle in hoof ready for anything that would begin. Day 74 I was right, today another group of them came but we were ready firing away, we took them down. But it was slower, since we had to take aim. Some suggested not firing till we saw the whites of their eyes. Others just shot still they wouldn’t go down. We need to think clearly. If we’re too late to fire, we’ll be dead, if we run out of Ammo, we’ll have to fight by hand, and who knows how that would fair. We’ve sent out another carrier pigion out to the princesses, we’ll need more food and whater. With these Zombies running around most of the men our too afraid to go out there. So we’re trapped with our rashions and what little what we have. Day 78 Sweet Celestia you’ve got to be kidding me they four days and we sent them the message, but there hasn’t been a response, we’re on our own, and they keep coming. Somethings wrong. I think someone, or something is stopping our messages from getting here. I’m on guard watching off in the field, ever so often I have to pick these damn Zombies off. But they just keep coming, So far they’ve been coming down one by one. The loud groan’s Will be following me for the longest time. I shudder thinking about it. They just show up. Where the hell our these bodies coming from? They have to be coming from somewhere? But more importantly who made them. I’m only going to guess some unicorn necromancer did this. But what for. All I know is it’s getting tiring. Day 80, There’s still nothing not even a response and we’re running low, low on food and water. We’re definetly getting desperate, I can only assume that we’re in trouble. Though we still have the advantage. But I’m getting worried if these things get past us, Equestria would be in big trouble. We’re the one line of defence between them and our world. Day 85 Fives days, we’ve been holding them off for five day’s, and we can barely move, I’ve been watching them coming back. Hours and hours of it, while We shot at them. We’re running out of bullets. If it comes down to it, I’ll take my spear out and go out and fight them. It would hold onto it, With my dying breath. I just used my last bullet, getting one of them in the head, I watched my other It looks like its time for me to take it in hooves and fight. I’ll message you when I can, while while I get some luck. It’s time for me to fight. Hopefully this isn’t the end my old friend. Sometimes I wonder what my future might hold for me. Day 90 Oh god, I think we got them. It was a long give days, but we survived. Or better yet I survived. Out of everything that happened I managed to be the only survivor, everyibe else died, But I was the sole survivor. Which saddens me. So many friends so many people I’ve dealt with but they’re all gone. I’ll burry them when I can. But when I get a chance to. Though at this point I think the zombies are gone, this was the last stand, though its hard to tell. As soon as I finish writing this I’ll Be heading off. I’m tired of the fighting. It’s clear we were abandoned, but who knows whats going on. So this’ll be the last time I write in you, It’s time for me to move on, heading off towards the unknown, With only my spear right by my side. So good bye old friend We’ll meet again sooner or later. Maybe…
