They might be a better comedy act than expected.

Twilight Sparkle and Sunset Shimmer both have once had an alternate form, showing their corruption through magic: These forms were Midnight Sparkle, and an unnamed demonic form, respectively.

This is the story of their first meeting, and how they became the first comedic couple in the realm of magic.

Sunshine at Midnight

The Realm of Magic. A dimension inacessible to most ponies, and definitely out of the boundaries of any normal human. The very essence that made up the majority of this world, magic itself, had arrived through little drops on Earth, but for the most, both dimensions remained separate.

And why was this important? Because this process allowed the realm to finally have sentient life inhabitting it.

The first sentient entity in there, as far as anybody knew, was none other than Sunset Shimmer's demon form, who stood on top of a bizarre structure as a portal opened nearby, signaling a new lifeform was coming to greet her.

Finally, I was starting to think I was going to have peace and quiet forever.

The demonic entity jumped off the structure, and walked next to the portal, from where Midnight Sparkle was shout out of, landing on the ground face-first.

"Greetings, fellow demon," the demon spoke as she helped Midnight Sparkle stand up. "I'm mostly called Sunset Shimmer, but I prefer to be called Sunshine Luster. Cool name, right?"

Midnight Sparkle dusted herself and took a quick scan at her surroundings, seemingly ignoring Sunshine Luster's attempts at being friendly.

"This is the perfect place..."

Sunshine Luster raised an eyebrow.

"For what? Training our powers so that we can one day get our revenge against our counterparts?"

Midnight Sparkle faced Sunshine Luster, flashed a smile... then spun before she spread her arms wide and exclaimed joyously.

"A comedy routine!"

Sunshine Luster blinked twice.

"Uh, what?"

"Exactly what I said: A comedy routine!" Midnight Sparkle chirped. "We stand on top of a stage, pull pranks and jokes on each other, and bathe in the ensuing laughter from a non-existent audience!"

Sunshine Luster folded her arms.

"Were you corrupted by a certain Pinkie Pie on your way here?"

Midnight Sparkle immediately wrapped her arms around Sunshine Luster's shoulders.

"Who cares if I was corrupted or not? This place is super boring with only the two of us around here, right?"

"Technically, we're not the only ones around... but then again, I haven't seen any other sentient creatures around here..."

After a moment of thought, Sunshine Luster sighed.

"Alright, let's do the comedy routine!"

An imaginary audience clapped and cheered as Sunshine Luster and Midnight Sparkle stood on top of a stage that materialized from nowhere, with them waving and bowing at the audience, while really just doing that at nothing in particular.

"Hello, everybody, welcome to our comedy show! I'm Sunshine Luster!"

"And I'm Twilight Sparkle!"

"Cut!"

An imaginary audience chuckled as Midnight turned to look at Sunshine with a confused look. "Huh?"

"We're barely at the intro and you're already messing up!" Sunshine snapped. "You're Twilight Sparkle's evil alter ego, Midnight Sparkle!"

"Oh right, Midnight Sparkle!" Midnight pointed at herself. "That's my name!"

Sunshine nodded. "That's your name."

Then Midnight pointed at Sunshine. "And what's your name?"

"I'm Sunshine Luster."

Then she pointed at herself. "And what would that make me?"

"...Midnight Sparkle."

She took out a photo of Sunset Shimmer. "And what would that make her?"

"You have no relation with Sunset at all!" Sunshine snapped, causing the imaginary audience to laugh out loud. "At best, she kicked your butt straight into this dimension, but besides that, you have nothing to do with each other!"

Midnight Sparkle remained silent.

"That's Sunset Shimmer."

"But I thought you were Sunset Shimmer."

The audience laughed as Sunshine uttered some random gibberish,

"Technically, I'm a form of Sunset Shimmer, but since I want to try and make myself my own person, just as you have, I decided to go by the name of Sunshine Luster."

"Sunshine what-now?"

"Sunshine Luster!"

Midnight Sparkle hummed with a dumbfounded expression.

"Can you say that ten times so I can memorize it?"

Sunshine Luster's hair and eyebrows glew as they were set ablaze.

"I swear to whatever divine equivalent there is in the realm of magic that I'm this close to hitting you."

Sunshine Luster took a deep breath, and promptly began the ten-time saying.

"Sunshine Luster, Sunshine Luster, Sunshine Luster, Sunshine Luster, Sunshine Luster, Sunshine Luster, Sunshine Luster, Sunshine Luster, Sunshine Luster, Sunshine Luster."

Once she finished, she clutched her chest and breathed heavily.

"I didn't think that would leave me so out of breath."

Midnight Sparkle clapped.

"Wow! You actually did it! I didn't think you'd be able to, but I'm happy you proved me wrong! Now, let's see if it worked..."

She took out a picture of Starlight Glimmer, of all people.

"Who's this one?"

Sunshine Luster looked incredulously at the picture, legitimately failing to identify the person in the frame as anybody she had met before.

"Beats me: Who is she?"

Midnight Sparkle yelled as she raised the picture and threw it down Sunshine's head, causing it to crash right in the middle and land on her sholders.

Sunshine Luster, for her part, barely responded to the sudden assault.

"You were supposed to say your name back then!"

Sunshine Luster, still failing to process what happened, had this to say:

"Still, who the heck is the person you showed me? I don't remember ever seeing her."

"That's because you haven't," Midnight Sparkle answered honestly as she took the picture off Sunshine Luster. "I found this picture inside one of Twilight's memories, and I figured it would make for decent material for the training session-"

The fiery demon immediately shushed the lunar maniac.

"Wait, hold it right there: You actually managed to steal an image, inside Twilight's memories to boot, of a random person she met, and considering the species-swapping nature of dimension traveling, turned the picture from a Pony to a Human, and then brought it here, just to use it as a prop for our comedy act?"

Midnight Sparkle shrugged.

"It's easy to do when you have a connection with your counterpart."

"You have a connection with Twilight Sparkle!?" Sunshine Luster yelled out of nowhere, sending shivers down Midnight Sparkle's back. "I've been stuck in this supernatural mix of rainbow nonsense, and you managed to have a connection with her!? How did you do it!?"

Midnight Sparkle shrugged once more. "I dunno, I just... did."

"Oh no, that cannot be it: Such a half-baked answer can't be the reason you did all that!" Sunshine grabbed Midnight's shoulders and pulled her for a moment. "There has to be a more detailed answer about it!"

Noticing Sunshine's desperation, Midnight flashed a smirk, and separated from her as she saved the picture.

"Well, you're right, there actually is a more detailed answer on how you can get a connection with your counterpart, dear Sunshine."

A smile formed around the demon's face.

"Oh really?! That's great! Do you think you could tell me about it?!"

Midnight Sparkle flashed a grin, opened her mouth... and strolle away cheerfully.

"Hey, wait! Come back! Tell me how to do it!"

And as the demonic entities ran away, Sunshine Luster chasing after a giggling Midnight Sparkle, the once forgotten imaginary audience laughed out loud and clapped, even cheering as a pair of not-so-imaginary curtains came down, ending the show.
