Prologue: Rising Sun

Princess Twilight Sparkle sat on one of the balconies of the Castle of Friendship. It was still nighttime, Luna’s moon still high in the sky along with all the stars. The crisp morning air was chilly against the Alicorns skin, and Twilight shivered slightly as she continued to watch the horizon, waiting for one of her favorite moments of the day.

Like clockwork, the moon slowly started to descend out of the sky until it went down over the horizon, and not a few seconds later the sun began its ascent into the sky, painting the sky with vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows as it rose from beyond the horizon. Twilight, watching this from the balcony, gave a small sigh.

“It always is a beautiful sight to see,” She thought to herself as she felt the morning light washing over her. Every morning, ever since she had gotten her wings, she had made sure to be outside in time to watch the moon set and the sun rise.

As Twilight stood and turned to enter the castle, she once more felt something deep within her stir as she thought about Celestia raising the sun. A blush colored her cheeks as she tried to push down the emotions she was feeling, but knowing from past experience that it wasn’t as simple as that. Ever since the day of her coronation, Twilight had kept feeling this strange warmth in her chest whenever she thought of her former mentor and now fellow princess.

“Is this what it feels like, having a crush on somepony?” She though to herself as she walked through the hallways of the castle. “I wouldn’t know the slightest thing about that, and I doubt I could learn anything about it from books…” She paused mid-stride, thinking, before shrugging to herself as she started towards the library. “Well, I may as well try to see if there’s anything in a book about this.”

As she reached the library, however, she stopped as another idea came to her. One that, now that it had revealed itself to her, made Twilight feel slightly annoyed with herself for not coming up with in the first place.

“Cadance!” Twilight thought, a smile crossing her face. She could just send a message to Cadance and ask her about it. With a content smile, the Alicorn trotted into the library and levitated a scroll, inkwell, and quill over to a table as she sat down, dipping the quill into the inkwell and beginning to write:

Cadance,

I’ve been having this strange feeling whenever I think of somepony in particular for a while now, and I wanted to ask you about it. When you have a crush on somepony, does it feel like a warm tingling in your chest whenever you think about them? I wish I had more to say on the matter, but I don’t… please write back to me as soon as you get this letter. I’d really like to know what it is I’m experiencing.

Twilight.

With a sigh, Twilight set the quill in the inkwell as she rolled the scroll up, tying a purple ribbon around it before she focused and with a flash teleported it away to the Crystal Empire, knowing that Cadance would likely get it sometime soon eventually. With the matter of writing the letter taken care of, she turned her attention to the shelves of book, smiling slightly.

“And now, to do some research on my own,” She thought as she started looking for a book that could possibly explain what she was feeling.

"Are you kidding me!" Twilight yelled in frustration as she threw yet another book into a pile on the floor. "Not a single one of these books has had anything useful!"

With a frustrated growl, Twilight levitated yet another book off the shelf, not even glancing at the title as she flipped it open. After reading a few lines in her head, though, she blinked once, before she started to read it aloud softly to herself.

“Something I’ve learned about love in the most part is that it is a complex thing, and is hard to pin down or describe.” Twilight read. “It’s one of the reasons why I like making the romances in my novels so mysterious, due to how well it reflects real life romances. But from what I’ve learned talking to other ponies in order to make my novels believable is that almost, if not always, they can tell when they have feelings towards somepony else due to this warm feeling they get in their heart and chest.”

Twilight was stunned at what she was reading: so she did have a crush! And it was on… she felt her cheeks flush with heat as she realized that every time she had that feeling, it was when she was thinking of Princess Celestia.

“So I have a crush on my former mentor, who also happens to be much older than me,” Twilight thought dryly. “That’s just great.” She closed the book and glanced at the cover, reading the title and author aloud.

The Life of an Author; A Personal Memoir of Star Seeker,” She read. “By Star Seeker.”

"Maybe I should go try and talk to him," Twilight thought as she flipped to the pages in the book where Star Seeker described his living situations.

"The main reason I like living where I do is because of its isolated location," She read aloud. "My house is perfectly located far away from the general hubbub of Manehatten. I even have my own observatory connected to my house, so that I can study the night sky."

"Hmmm..." Twilight thought for a few minutes, before she smiled. "Well, looks like I have a little trip to go on."

Twilight trotted out of the library, bursting into a run as she raced to her room. There, she quickly levitated her saddlebags out and loaded them with several scrolls, a quill and inkwell, and finally Star Seeker's book. With that done, she set them on her back, before trotting out of her room.

"Maybe I should bring Starlight with me?" Twilight thought, glancing in the direction of Starlight's room. "It'd be nice to have somepony with me... but is that really the best idea, based on why I'm going to talk to him?"

Chapter One: Star Seeker

Twilight trotted along the countryside with her head buried in a book, scanning the map illustrated on the page before looking up and glancing around, smiling to herself in satisfaction as she slid the book into her saddlebags.

“We’re almost there!” She called to her travelling companion. Starlight Glimmer let out a sigh of relief upon hearing Twilight’s news, shaking one of her hooves.

“Thank Celestia! We’ve been walking for almost an hour and my hooves are killing me!” The unicorn complained, shaking another one of her hooves. Twilight rolled her eyes as she continued on, cresting the hill before them. What she saw on the other side made her jaw drop.

“Twilight?” Starlight asked, coming up alongside her. The unicorn followed the alicorns gaze, and then it was Starlight’s turn to have her jaw drop. Below them in its own little valley was a nice-sized cottage. But the reason why their jaws had dropped was the large observatory attached to the cottage, the lens of its telescope just visible inside of the roof.

“Wow…” Twilight breathed. “When I read his description of where he lived, I didn’t know Star Seeker lived in such a place like this…”

“Star Seeker is pretty well known for his ability to weave words that normally seem dull and lifeless into detailed and descriptive sentences and stories,” Starlight said, and when Twilight looked at the unicorn with a raised eyebrow she said. “What!? I like reading his stories! I own a copy of, like, every book he’s ever published!”

“He must be some writer then,” Twilight said as she led Starlight down the path that they could now see that led towards Star Seeker’s dwelling place. After a few more minutes of walking, they finally reached the door of his cottage, and Twilight stepped up to it and knocked firmly, before stepping back to stand alongside Starlight. A few seconds passed, before the door opened enough to reveal a single royal blue eye looking out at them, the tiniest bit of dark blue fur visible around it.

“Princess Twilight Sparkle?” A rich and smooth voice asked, and Twilight nodded.

“Yes, but please just call me Twilight,” She said, before continuing. “Mr. Seeker, I came to actually talk to you about something.”

The door opened the rest of the way, and then Star Seeker stepped out onto the porch of his house. Beside her, Twilight heard Starlight’s breath catch in her throat. Star Seeker was a handsome looking unicorn stallion with a dark blue coat of fur. His mane and tail were black, yet had thin stripes of silver in them. His eyes were a rich royal blue color, and when he smiled the alicorn could have sworn she heard Starlight’s heart skip a beat.

“Well then, welcome to my humble abode Twilight,” Star Seeker said as he stepped down off the porch and walked up to them, directing his attention towards Starlight, who looked as if she was out of breath.

“And who might you be Miss?” The writer asked the unicorn, and Starlight blushed furiously as she tried to smile.

“I-I’m Starlight Glimmer,” She stammered, and Twilight raised an eyebrow. Starlight had never stuttered before. The unicorn continued. “I-I’m a friend o-of Twilight’s and d-decided to accompany her o-on her trip out h-here.”

“Well, it’s a pleasure to meet you Miss Glimmer,” Star Seeker said as he politely took her hoof and kissed it slightly, and Starlight seemed to be ready to faint. The writer turned to Twilight and said. “If you would, Twilight, follow me into my home? Your friend is allowed to come if she wishes to.”

“Thank you Mr. Seeker,” Twilight said, and as she and Starlight followed him inside she whispered to her friend. “Starlight, what has gotten into you?”

“I… well, I…” Starlight stammered, before sighing dreamily. “He’s so handsome, don’t you agree?”

“He’s handsome for sure, but he doesn’t come close to Celestia’s beauty,” Twilight thought to herself, before nodding. “He is handsome, I’ll admit.” She then gave her friend a look before grinning. “My my, Starlight. Do you have a crush?”

“No!” Starlight said, a little too quickly. She then paused, before saying. “Well, maybe…” Twilight raised her eyebrow, and the unicorn finally broke. “Yes… please don’t tell anypony?”

“Don’t worry Starlight, your secret is safe with me,” Twilight said with a smile, and Starlight seemed relieved. After a few more minutes, Star Seeker paused outside of a door.

“This is my personal study. I believe it will be comfortable enough for us to discuss what is on your mind, Miss Sparkle,” The writer said, and the alicorn nodded before looking at her friend.

“Would you mind allowing us to speak in private Starlight?” Twilight asked her, and the unicorn seemed like she was about to protest, before simply sighing and nodding.

“If it would make your wait any more bearable, the entrance to the observatory is three doors down,” Star Seeker said, and Starlight perked up.

“Have fun talking!” She said, before dashing off. Star Seeker chuckled, before allowing Twilight to enter his study before following her. Inside the room was several comfy chairs, a desk, and three bookshelves filled to the brim with book. Star Seeker took a seat in one chair, and Twilight sat down in one facing him.

“So, what did you want to talk about, Miss Sparkle?” He asked with a smile. Twilight smiled back, before taking a deep breath.

“It’s about something you wrote in your personal memoir of your life,” She said, pulling the book out of her saddlebag. Star Seeker smiled, before he held out a hoof and she levitated it over to him, her purple aura being replaced by his dark blue one as he opened the book and looked through it.

“Yes, I remember this,” the unicorn author said with a chuckle. “I was slightly nervous of how everypony would react when I let everything about my life out there, but nothing happened.” The author paused as he reached one section that was filled with notes in the margins, and the unicorn brought the book closer as he read a few of the notes, before raising his gaze towards Twilight, who tried to stay still under his gaze.

“I take it you wish to learn more about love and how to know if you are in love with somepony?” He asked after a few minutes. Twilight blushed, but nodded.

“I… I already know that I have a crush on somepony, I just don’t know what to do next,” The lavender alicorn admitted, and Star Seeker laughed.

“Do whatever comes from your heart,” He advised. “Then you can’t ever go wrong. If you ever need any more relationship advice, just write to me.”

“I’ll be sure to remember that,” Twilight giggled as she took the book back from him, before standing with him standing as well. “Thank you for your Time, Mr. Seeker.”

“It was an honor to be of assistance, Miss Sparkle.” The unicorn replied as they headed out of his study. Outside, they found Starlight waiting with a wide smile.

“Your telescope is amazing!” She said to Star Seeker, making him chuckle. While the group continued walking towards the front door, Starlight continued. “Now I can see why you’re such a good writer! You always make sure everything is like it is in reality!”

“I do my best,” Star Seeker said as he held the door for them, and as the alicorn and unicorn left he called. “Hopefully I shall see you again sometime soon!”

“I hope so!” Starlight called back, before muttering to Twilight. “Please tell me we don’t have to walk back.”

Twilight let out a warm, cheerful laugh as she shook her head, powering up her horn before in a flash of magic the two of them vanished.
