> We're in this Together > by FlutterDash979797 > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- > Prologue > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Goals are more than mere objectives for a pony to accomplish and move on. Goals can define an individual's self-worth, confidence, and even lifestyle. Rainbow Dash's goals were a perfect reflection of her life; every step the athlete took was filled with the confidence of star. Her flight patterns were perfectly adjusted to induce cheers from anypony. The winds of Equestria trailed behind the pegasus. Rainbow Dash’s wings propelled her forward in the precision that only several years of training could produce. Storms of feathers ruffled the air as several bursts of speed twirled in the mare's various displays of skill. Only one possible solution existed in Rainbow's talents and the pegasus knew them all too well. Her filly hood was littered with posters, books, magazines, and signature clothing. The transition to adulthood didn't replace the previous worship, rather it complimented them with fangirl cries, contests, and perfection of flight routines. "Wonderbolt." Rainbow Dash whispered to herself in flight. "Rainbow Dash; the Wonderbolt." Fragmented distortions of colors clouded the daredevil's vision as her eyes failed to keep up with her tricks. Flip after flip, barrel roll after barrel roll. The number of tricks was surpassed only by the speed in which they were performed. A normal pony would find it an impossible task in attempting to decipher Dash's routine move by move. 2 weeks, she thought defiantly. 2 weeks until all of Equestria sees the greatness that is Rainbow Dash. Clustered bunches of clouds failed to make contact with the precision of Rainbow's flight as various tricks escalated. Flashes of brilliant cyan stood apart from the sky's dull blue. Up here, she thought. Up here is my home. My domain. I own the sky. Hooves dented the Equestrian soil violently, sending fragments in various directions. "Now that's how you fly!" she boasted. "Wow Rainbow Dash! You rock! Woo hoo." A pair of yellow wings fluttered in the distance. "Hey Fluttershy! You liked it?" Rainbow replied to her approaching friend. "Yes Rainbow! It was awesome! I loved all of your tricks! I can't wait to see you perform them during the Wonderbolt trials! You are going to be so amazing!" "It felt so awesome! I have everything perfect... Well, on that routine anyway. Wanna see another one?" "Of course Rainbow." Rainbow's gust flickered the grass next to the nervous spectator. "Ready Fluttershy?" Dash asked as her wings hovered. "Here it goes!" The air broke in a sharp pulse as Rainbow Dash soared towards the ground. "Double-backflip," she told herself. "followed by an upward barrel roll." "Woo hoo!" "Still working on those cheers, huh Fluttershy?" Dash laughed as she hovered over her. "Well, if I practiced half as much as you do, I would be a world-class cheerer!" "Anyways, what are you doing around here 'Shy? It's nice to see you." "I was just walking home after a visit to the forest. Animal stuff, you know?" "So you think I'm ready Fluttershy? Are you going to be there, cheering me on? Hopefully Rarity won't find another pair of wings this time!" "Oh, don’t worry about Rarity, she learned her lesson. Of course I will! Everypony will! And if anypony should be a Wonderbolt, it's you!" "Hey thanks Shy!" "I'm just speaking the truth Rainbow.” "So... are you guys going to come and visit me? When I'm traveling and performing all over Equestria?" "Of course Rainbow Dash! We all can't wait! I'll be there whenever I can! I wouldn't pass up a chance to see my best friend perform in front of thousands! You’re going to be so great! The best Wonderbolt ever!" "Aww... you're making me feel all sappy. But thanks, it's true, I know!" Dash laughed. "Maybe I can show you a trick or two sometime? I mean... I know flying isn't your favourite thing, but it would be a great way for us to catch up when I'm touring." "Yes... I would love that. But I'll never be as good as you, that's for sure." "Don't worry Shy! I'll turn a champion flier out of you yet! Anyways, I gotta get back to my routine... So I'll see you around sometime?" "Sure Rainbow Dash. If you ever need anything, I'll be here. I mean... You know I'm not good with tricks and flying, but if you ever need a friend, I'll be close." "I'll take you up on that! See you 'Shy!" Rainbow took into the spring skies; It's been awhile since we've talked. Well, alone anyways, Rainbow pondered as the wind massaged her face. All this Wonderbolt stuff... I hope I can never abandon my friends... I hope it doesn't get in the was. She halted mid-flight. Doubts? You're doubting the Wonderbolts? The moment you have been training for your entire life? Nah... I'll make it work. Friends and Wonderbolts, not a problem, just like saving Equestria. A mix-and-match of the first two routines followed. She had created several different styles for each routine. Some wrote, some drew; Rainbow Dash crafted a harmonious arrangement of style and skill. Speed? Oh, they're gonna be so impressed when I show em' a sonic rainboom again! I can't wait to see the look on their faces! She dashed through several clouds effortlessly as her agility routine came into play. There just isn't anything I can't do! Her routine finished without a scratch on the clouds. Yeah... I'm ready! Rainbow made her way to a larger cloud and rested in its unique comfort. "Who says Wonderbolts can't take naps?" Thoughts of Fluttershy's encouragement soon followed, catalyzing memories of all her companions. "Or have friends." Her head rested on the whites of the cloud as she pondered. This is everything, she thought as her breaths ruffled the cloud. My life... Everything is going to change. My life... I'll never stay in the same spot again... The thought forced her to retract her head from the comfort. No... I just... I want everything to go right. I can have my friends. I'll pass the trials. I'm as ready as I'll ever be. She followed with a massive gulp of air. But is that enough? > What Friends Are For > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- "Ah’ would say yer' ready, Rainbow Dash. No need tah’ go around asking everypony," Applejack assured. The farmhand's career ensured she would never be short of work, forcing her to multitask between advising Rainbow and bucking trees. "What’s the matter, sugarcube?" "Nothing the matter; I just like hearing everypony tell me how awesome I am," Rainbow Dash shuffled a basket of apples for her friend. "Or maybe I just can't think about anything else!" "Well that ah’ can believe! Nuff' with this ready stuff! Yer' fine! Now... let's talk bout’ something else." "Have I told you what challenges and trails are like?" "Ah’m sure yer' eager to share." Applejack tossed another basket for Rainbow to fill. "Well... there are three trials; agility, speed, and flight reflexes." "Ah’ bet yah got the speed one down," Applejack laughed. "Are you kidding me AJ? I'm totally the fastest flier ever!" "The others seem right in yer' alley as well." "You better believe it! For agility I have a couple different routines and they all are super awesome! My favorite agility routine involves a front dive, five barrel rolls, a change of direction, two back flips, and finishing with a perfect landing. In under a minute!" "Ah'd be darned if anypony could do that trick. But if anypony can, it's you Rainbow Dash." "Hey thanks AJ!" "Aw shucks, yer' welcome. No need ta’ thank me. They start soon, right?" "Yeah... the first trial starts in five days, and I leave tomorrow. Each trial lasts about a day. I figure I can hang out around in Cloudsdale for a couple days before they start. Practice a little." "Shucks Rainbow, sorry ah’ haven't been keeping in the swing of things. Too busy round' here," Applejack nudged her hoof against Rainbow's shoulder. "But ah'll be there fer’ you when you start the trials. Twilight is getting that spell ready." "Yeah... I knew she wouldn't let me down." "None of us would. That's why we're yer' friends!" "That's just what I like to hear! Gimme a hoof!" The athlete's hoof impacted with the cowgirl's. "Hay yeah!" Applejack cheered. "I gotta get going AJ; I think I'm going to practice for the-" Rainbow traced her steps. "Tenth time today." "Figures... keep at 'em gal. But ah’ got work to do, so ah’ll be here. Give em’ hay!” Rainbow quickly waved her friend goodbye before quickly taking to flight. Acres of Applejack’s handiwork were on display under Dash’s wingspan. The parallels of Applejack’s strength, dedication, and will to her own forced Dash’s ego to burst. Hmm... what next? What’s the game-plan for old Dash? “I don’t know Dashie! Maybe you could go to Sugarcube Corner and have some tasty treats! If I were you, that’s what I would do! But if I were you, then you would be me, and I would also go to Sugarcube corner! What are we waiting for? Let’s go!” Only a very particular pink mare could conjure up such a sentence. “Pinkie... what are you doing in that balloon, and did you read my thoughts?” The perplexed mare hovered next to her friend. “No silly! I didn’t read your mind! I listened to it! Reading minds, well that would be just goofy! It makes me laugh!” Pinkie giggled as her air-balloon began to stop its forward motion. “Whatever... hey, you know what? I’m free. We can hang out if you want. But I gotta go easy on the treats. Training and all, you know.” “Easy on the sweets? That’s impossible! Not when I make them! Come on, we have cake to eat!” The pranking pair quickly made their way to Sugarcube Corner in little time; Pinkie’s air-balloon was surprisingly fast. “Dashie... I’m so excited for you! A Wonderbolt? That is so awesome! You’re so awesome! Oh my gosh... this calls for a party!” Confetti erupted in various directions. “Sure Pinkie... but let’s wait until after the trials, okay? Then we can party it up like nopony’s business.” “Okie-dokie-lokie! I’ll start planning it now! Oh my gosh... Iit’s going to be the best thing ever! Bye Dashie! I have to get everything ready!” Pinkie took off and scurried about in circles; apparently creating plans for Dash’s future party. “But I thought you wanted to hang out?” Dash bit into a donut. “After Dashie! After-” Pinkie pieced together random party objects. “This has to be the best party ever, for the best Wonderbolt ever!” “Well... okay... have fun I guess. I’ll just finish my donut and be outta here?” “Sorry, I didn’t want you to leave Dashie! I can multitask!” “Nah it’s okay. You got your hooves full... and I want an awesome party for when I become a Wonderbolt... so it’s cool! Keep at it!” “Well, have all the sweets you want! They are super-duper-duper tasty!” “Alright,” Dash reached for another donut for the flight home. “Thanks Pinkie. It’s always nice hanging out with you.” “Totally Dashie! Rock on!” “Well, I gotta get going... so I’ll see you at the trials?” “Is that even a question silly? Of course!” “Thanks Pinkie!” “Your welcome!” Rainbow opened the door of Sugarcube Corner after her brief visit; hoping to finally make her way back home. It’s awesome that I have so much support. Friends like these... I’m lucky. “Hey Rainbow Dash!” Twilight? “Hey Twilight. What’s up?” Rainbow asked. “I was just going to visit Pinkie. How are you doing? Lots of stuff coming up soon, huh?” Twilight investigated. “Yeah. Lots. I keep running into all my friends today though. Which is awesome, don’t get me wrong.” “Looks like you will have your hooves full, that’s for sure.” Twilight smiled. "It’s better to have em’ full with a bunch of awesome stuff than to sit around all day!” “That’s certainly true! I know how that goes! Being a star student isn’t always easy,” Twilight sympathized. “But in the end of the day, it’s always worth it.” “Star student? More like professional egghead! But anyways, great talking with yah’!” “Good luck practicing! I gotta go see Pinkie,” Twilight opened the door to Sugarcube Corner. “C’ya Rainbow Dash!” “Later!” Rainbow spread her wings towards the direction of her cloud home. Nap time, maybe? The thought comforted the fatigued pegasus. Nap time it is. “Hi Rainbow Dash,” Rainbow turned her attention to a familiar whisper. “How are you?” “Hey Fluttershy! Wow! I am just running into everypony today!” “Oh... I’m sorry. Should I get out of your way?” Fluttershy retracted her confidence. “No way! Why don’t you fly with me a bit? I was just about to head home.” “Sure Rainbow Dash,” Fluttershy agreed. “I’ll follow you.” “Hmm...” Rainbow’s stomach growled. “Well, I just had some treats with Pinkie, but I’m hungry for a real meal. Wanna go grab lunch?” “Sure Rainbow! Why don’t you come over to my cottage? I can make something... if you want.” “Lead the way pal!” Rainbow cheered. Shy is an awesome friend and cook! I’m totally game! Lucky me! “Okay Dash. Let’s go!” Fluttershy soared gently through the spring sky with her best friend following. “Hey Fluttershy?” “Yes Dash?” “Check this out!” The daredevil outlined her cutie mark in her flight pattern. “Yeah well,” Fluttershy carefully traced her friends aerial artwork to her best ability. “Check that out!” “When were you competitive? Oh, you are on!” Rainbow performed a full rotation around Fluttershy mid flight in a playful manner; displaying no effort to contain her giggles. Fluttershy broke her flight whilst Rainbow continued forward. “Hey Fluttershy, why are you stopping? Too afraid you can’t keep up! It’s okay, nopony can!” Rainbow hovered next to her friend. “Oh... I’m just tired Rainbow.” “Hey I’m sorry Fluttershy. I should have known.” “Really Rainbow? Cause,” Fluttershy pushed forward, gaining a several second head-start. “I just tricked you!” “I’m totally not sorry now! You’re on!” Rainbow easily bypassed her friend’s limited flight abilities. After she held her first place for several seconds, Dash paced her wingbeat to allow Fluttershy to keep up. Fluttershy nudged her hoof against Rainbow’s shoulder. “Dash, we’re already there silly!” “You know, I was getting so distracted there! Too bad I totally wasted you!” “You rock! Woo hoo!” Fluttershy descended to the ground and opened her front door to Rainbow. “I know! After a stunt like that, I’m totally going to be ready! Everypony is going to shine me with diamonds and cheer! Crowds of thousands Fluttershy! It’s not your thing, I know. But I love attention!” “How are you handling this? The training, the stress, everything I mean. I wouldn’t know what to do if I was in your hooves,” Fluttershy paused for a brief second. “Oh, I’m sorry. I’m sure you are fine and all I’m doing is bring attention to myself. Just forget I said it.” “Nah ‘Shy, it’s cool! Don’t worry! We can talk about this kinda stuff,” Rainbow wrapped her foreleg around Fluttershy. She’s an awesome friend; I can talk to her about being anxious. She’ll understand. Fluttershy is not a pony to judge or spread gossip. “Oh... well then, would you mind talking about it?” “Yeah. You know, I have been feeling really anxious. Remember the Young Flier’s Competition? When I totally freaked out before? Double that.” Dash felt great comfort in the truth; especially in the presence of her understanding friend. “It’s okay to feel that way Dash. But why are so anxious? I’m pretty sure the Wonderbolts would accept you already, even without the trials! They saw how awesome you were so many times; You saved Equestria and created a Sonic Rainboom! Actually, you know that Wonderbolt Soarin? He once told me how you saved his pie! I thought he was so silly, but he was really serious about it. And how you would make an awesome Wonderbolt!” “Really?” Rainbow replied. “He said he got a pie from a band of traveling pirates and he wanted you to make sure it didn’t drop. He said it was serious business. I’m not exactly sure what he meant but I can tell you with certainty that they really think highly of you.” “I guess I have no reason to be all sissy with all this, do I?” Rainbow’s head fell in shame. “Of course not Dash! Everypony feels anxious! It’s just part of life.” Fluttershy offered a foreleg to Dash, who proceed to quickly hug the mare. “Well let’s get on those sandwiches! I’m hungry!” A few minutes passed as Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash each made several sandwiches, enjoying the teamwork. Rainbow had created a game of it; the mare’s desire for competition never ceased, even in the menial task of food-preparation. “Ready” Rainbow shuffled several ingredients and a knife forward. “For this game? I think you’re a little silly Dash, but sure,” Fluttershy readied her utensils. “I’m always up for a game!” “Go!” The mares quickly cut the vegetables and attempted to piece them together. Fluttershy finished her sandwich several seconds before her cyan friend.“I won! Beat you Dash!” “That makes us even! Now, let’s eat!” Rainbow bro-hoofed the animal caretaker. “Could you please get us some drinks Dash?!” Rainbow used her familiarity of her best friend’s house to instantly locate the magic powered chiller. She reached for a pitcher of water and poured two glasses; topping them off with several cubes of ice. “I’m on my way!” “How about we skip on a game this time! I’m hungry,” Fluttershy laughed. “Sounds good.” Rainbow took a seat next to her friend. “So I’ll have to make you some signs for the trails. I’ll give one to all of the girls and we can cheer you on together. Woo hoo,” Fluttershy took a bite of her sandwich. “What should they say?” Rainbow was quick to reply “Rainbow Dash is 20% cooler than you!” “Sounds just like you Dash!” “Anyways, thanks ‘Shy. I can’t say how awesome it is to have this much support. I know, when I’m flying and styling, I’ll have my friends right there cheering me on!” “And we’ll be there when you’re a Wonderbolt too; you can count on it!” “Remember when you talked down that Dragon ‘Shy? Like totally kicked his flank with your voice?” Fluttershy grinned widely. “Oh, he just needed a little guidance. Not a bad dragon; he just made a bad decision.” “Either way, you know what? You were so brave! You totally conquered your fears! That takes guts! And to top it off, you totally talked him down! Oh wait, I already told you that. But still!” “I guess I have a way with animals. Big or small.” “More like awesomeness! I think you are the only pony in history who stopped a dragon by yelling!” “You learned a lesson as well,” Fluttershy focused her attention on Dash’s eyes. “Kicking a huge dragon is really silly!” “Oh... I didn’t hit him that hard! If I went full-force, he would have cried out of that cave!” Dash teased. Fluttershy finished her sandwich. “I’ll take your word for it, Best Young Flier.” “Man... I’m full! That was awesome, by the way! Thanks for lunch!” “Not a problem Dash.” A loud yawn arose in the cyan mare. “Ugh... After all that flying, I better take a nap. I should get going.” The animal caretaker offered a suggestion. “Why don’t you sleep here? I mean, I’ll stay out of your way. Plus, you won’t have to find a cloud. If that’s okay with you.” “Sure! I mean, that’s fine right?” Dash said with a hint of uncertainty. “Of course!” “Well then, I’m off! Going to dream about winning! In a few days, I won’t have to dream anymore!” ‘I guess taking a nap at Fluttershy’s is no different from home. Plus, I can be sure she won’t wake me up; I can barely hear her when I’m awake!’ Rainbow took a seat on Fluttershy’s couch. “I’ll be outside with the animals,” Fluttershy offered a pillow to the athlete. “Sleep tight.” “You don’t need to ask! I’m exhausted!” “Fluttershy darling? Are you there?” Rarity found her way inside the cottage. “Oh, hi Rarity. How are you today? Are you here to drop off Opal?” Fluttershy greeted the fashionista with a hug. “Yes. She needs the usual trim if that would be okay. I have tried, even in the way you have showed me, but she always claw me!” “It’s not a problem Rarity! Come here Opal.” The cat quickly found herself in Fluttershy’s hooves, enjoying a tight snuggle. “So what are you- oh, is that Rainbow Dash?” “What’s up Rarity? I was just about to take a nap,” Rainbow kept to the couch, refusing to remove herself from the comfort to physically greet Rarity. “Oh well, we wouldn't want to interupt your nap! I always hate it when ponies do that! “Fluttershy dear, why don’t leave Rainbow alone? She’s probably exhausted after such intense training. Come on, let’s go outside,” Rarity suggested, quickly nudging the shy mare outside. “How short do you want Opal’s coat?” Fluttershy asked, oblivious to Rarity’s actions. “Fluttershy, is there something you aren’t telling me?” Rarity smiled suggestively. “Um... Well, last time I trimmed Opal, one spot wasn’t even. I’m sorry.” Rarity facehooved. “No darling, about Rainbow Dash.” “She was really tired and hungry?” “Look Fluttershy,” Rarity realized that a blunt method would work the best for her shy friend. “Do you have feelings for her?” “No... Well...” Fluttershy surveyed her surroundings and placed her muzzle next to Rarity’s ear, ready to whisper “Sort of, I mean, yes...” “Oh I’m so happy for you! It’s great that you finally found a special somepony! But darling, aren’t you sad that she is leaving?” “A little. But I’m so happy for her. And I know she will come back all the time. And why would she want me as a special somepony? It’s better that I don’t tell her. It will just make things complicated.” “She looks really happy right now; don’t forget that. And I’m sure she would love you as a special somepony! Hey. I got an idea.” “What is it Rarity,” Fluttershy took another look to ensure that nopony could listen. “You should go with her to Cloudsdale. Be there for her while she trains. I know all of us will be there for the trials, but you could make sure she is never alone during the whole trip.” “Actually, I might do that. Not for me, but I could make sure she’s not alone during training.” Fluttershy smiled at the suggestion. “Smashing dear! I have several orders to fill, but don’t forget what we talked about. Have a pleasant time with your special somepony!” Rarity giggled as she left the cottage. Several loud snores greeted Fluttershy as she entered her home. “Goodnight Dashie,” Fluttershy quietly shut the living room door, leaving a peaceful setting for the sleepy mare. Special somepony? No... I might have a little crush, but I can’t do that to her. She’s got more important things to worry about than me. The shy mare readied Opal for her grooming. But I should go with her. I don’t want her to feel anxious for nothing. That’s what friends are for. > Best When We're Together > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- “Good afternoon Dash! How was your nap?” “Ugh... How long was I out?” Dash wiped her eyes. “Two hours! And you looked so happy during your nap; I wasn’t going to wake you up.” Fluttershy trotted over to Rainbow Dash. “Oh boy, I never take naps for this long,” Dash climbed off the couch. “What time is it anyway?” “About 6 o’clock,” Fluttershy went in for a soft hug. “Feeling better?” “I don’t know how I’m going to go to bed at a normal time tonight! Naps usually do that for me,” Dash stretched the muscles of her wings. “Ah hay, night-flying is the best flying there is.” “It’s been a while since I flew in the night for a long time. I mean, since I had the intention of flying during the night.” “I try to do it once per week. Good time for thinking, you know?” “What’s on your mind when you’re up there?” Fluttershy asked. Rainbow held no secrets. “Sometimes I worry about myself, and sometimes I worry about others. Element of Loyalty and all, right? I guess I worry about a bunch of things; it just depends on the moment. Life can be full of surprises; some pretty awesome... Others... Not so much.” “I can understand that. Oh, you know me... Afraid of my own shadow and all... I worry about everything it seems like. And guess where it gets me? Nowhere. But I can’t stop... Or at least anytime soon,” Fluttershy opened the front door of her cottage, leading Rainbow outside. “So sometimes I go out here and sing. It gets my mind off things, you know?” “I appreciate the thought but I’m no singer ‘Shy.” “That’s what you have your night-flights for silly! You answered your own question!” Fluttershy laughed. “Well, that is true, still... I guess another hobby wouldn’t kill me. Something that keeps me grounded, you know?” Rainbow opened her wings. “Something that gives these guys some rest.” “That isn’t up to me Rainbow Dash. That’s up to you.” Rainbow chuckled. “You know me though; I have to do something competitive. Otherwise it’s lame.” “How about you try to beat yourself?” Fluttershy suggested. “Huh?” “You know, find something you are good at; non-athletic of course, and try to beat your own score. I always try to get the best note out of my singing.” “You know I love setting records!” “The point here is that you don’t go crazy over this. Just use it as a therapy.” Dash sifted her hoof through the grass. “Yeah.” Fluttershy closed the distance between her friend. “You know how tomorrow is your last day before you leave. Are you doing anything special?" “Pinkie told me she wanted to throw a party but I wanted it to wait. Wait until I get home, you know? I was planning on just chilling tomorrow. That simple stuff.” “"Trying to not make a big deal out of it? I can understand that!” Dash giggled. “Of course you can Fluttershy! When have you ever brought attention to yourself?” “Why don’t you show me a routine?” Fluttershy asked. “I really should work on my cheering!” “Get ready to get ready! It’s going to get awesome pretty quick!” Dash quickly took to flight and followed her agility routine. The cyan mare’s talent was truly something to behold. Her speed did not hinder her agility or style. “Woo hoo!” The daredevil ended the flight with a calculated flip, allowing her to land several feet in front of Fluttershy. “Impressed or what?” “Impressed? No, I’m amazed! That was awesome!” “Why don’t you try it?” Fluttershy retracted her excitement. “No... I’d rather... well you know... watch you.” “You know I won’t care what you do! Just go out there and have fun!” She doesn’t care whether I fly perfectly or not... she just wants to have fun. What’s there to lose? Fluttershy accelerated upward. “Okay Miss Wonderbolt, you show me how it’s done!” “Let’s work on a barrel roll. It’s really simple,” Dash neared the clouds as she gained height. “Start flying downward and twist your wing’s direction.” Fluttershy hovered next to her friend and awaited a demonstration. “Ready ‘Shy? Check this out!” Several Rainbow patterns littered the sky as she rolled downward. It appeared almost effortless for the athlete- Fluttershy guessed it was a combination of tireless practice and natural talent that allowed her friend to fly above the rest. The timid pegasus adjusted her aim towards the ground, facing the now grounded Rainbow Dash. “Okay Rainbow Dash... here I go!” Fluttershy gusted her wings as fast as they would beat, reaching speeds that approached Dash’s. “You gotta twirl your wings! Throw your body weight to the side!” Dash attempted to break the poor auditory conditions of flight. “Woo!” Fluttershy delighted. Three solid barrel rolls complimented the impressive speed of the normally-weak flier. “Rainbow Dash! This is awesome!” “Keep going!” “Oh my! Rainbow Dash! Look out!” Fluttershy’s speed refused to give; even at the sight of hard ground. The animal-caretaker kicked up several mounds of ground as she attempted to land. “Fluttershy? Are you alright? I’m coming!” Dash scurried to the crash site. “Speak to me! Are you okay?” “That was-” Fluttershy whispered. “Was what? I’m worried sick here!” “TOTALLY AWESOME!” The yellow mare’s cheers were elevated to a normal level. Dash quickly grabbed her friend and engaged in a series of hugs and giggles. “You goof! You gotta land, not explode on the ground!” Dash knocked ‘Shy’s hoof. “I can’t even call that a crash!” “Woo hoo!” Fluttershy still held onto her victory. “I mean, the crash kinda hurt, but it was so worth it!” “Just hurt? Man, you must be one tough mare! That was rough filly!” “I don’t care! I did a few barrel rolls! I’ve never done anything like that before!” Dash dusted dirt of her friend. “That’s what you get for hanging out with me.” “Best friends forever?” Fluttershy offered a hoof to Rainbow Dash. “Hay yeah!” Dash cheered. “Pals for life!” “Walking? I never thought you have talked me into it,” Rainbow Dash walked alongside her friend amongst Luna’s dark art. “I used to think... what’s the point? Why walk when you can fly? But I was wrong. This is actually pretty relaxing.” “So is the ground cool enough for Rainbow Dash; the coolest and most awesome flier in all of Equestria?” Fluttershy teased. “You know the ground the best ‘Shy! What’s the coolest part of this walk?” “The stars are really pretty; just like they always are. The temperature is just perfect; it’s not too cold or too hot. But you know what the best part is?” Dash puzzled at the thought. “What’s that?” “The company,” Fluttershy thanked Luna’s void for shadowing her blush. “Friendship, well, sometimes it can be magical.” “Which is why I totally can’t wait for you guys to be there for me during the trials!” Dash was oblivious to Fluttershy’s appreciation. “I need all the friendship I can get!” “That’s not a problem Dash! We all got your back,” Fluttershy attempted to bring attention to Dash’s anxiety. “I know we already talked about this... but something tells me that... well, it might help if you talk about it some more. And I’m right here for you.” “D’awww! You always know how to make a pony feel happy,” Dash joked before switching the topic to more serious matters. “But I’m fine. I think.” “You think? Dash I really hope you don’t think; I hope you know. I want you to know. There’s no hiding it; you’re awesome!” “Thanks,” Rainbow paused for a second. “ But we all have our doubts, you know?” Fluttershy offered a hoof as a sign of reassurance. “It’s me Dash. Your best friend. I know you will be fine regardless of what comes your way.” “Tomorrow is such a big change; how can anypony look at a day that changes their life and shrug it off? I haven’t been able to get my mind off it. I guess I’m fine with the changes; how could I not be? I just... I’m not sure what will happen... it’s too much and too fast. Awesome can only go so far, huh?” Fluttershy gifts her friend a comforting wing. “You’ve handled bigger challenges than this. Remember when we took on Discord? You stuck to it and it paid off. You’re pretty special Dash. I don’t know many other ponies who have accomplished so much in so little of time.” “I didn’t do it alone. I had my best friends by my side. Always there for me; cheering me on or fighting for Equestria. Boy, that sounded kinda silly, didn’t it? But it’s true.” "I'm glad we got to talking about this...” Fluttershy paused for a prolonged second. “I really like spending time with you Dash. I really like flying with you, laughing with you, walking with you. What I’m trying to say is...” “What is it ‘Shy?” “Well... I guess what I’m trying to say...” The pair’s eyes met. Fluttershy’s resolve melted under the gaze of the rainbow maned mare. “I-I don’t want you to leave us. I’m really going to miss you. Like, really really miss you.” “I’m going to miss you too,” Dash hugged her friend tightly. “I’m going to miss everypony.” It’s just not worth it. Dash doesn’t see me that way. “Are you okay Fluttershy?” “Yes... I’m fine. Just a lot on my mind. Just like you,” Fluttershy lifted herself up. “It’s getting late. Why don’t we head home?” “Sure. I’ll walk you home.” “Thank you Rainbow Dash.” “Oh come on, you know you don’t have to thank me.” I gotta ask her. It’s the right thing to do. The timid mare gathered her strength. “Rainbow Dash... are... are you sure you wanna go practice by yourself?” “You know I’ll be fine. I’ll manage until you guys get there.” “Maybe I could come with... I mean, if you want me to,” Fluttershy hoped for a positive response. “I don’t have to come, but I want to... I mean if you want me to.” “Sure! That would be awesome!” Dash jolted with a burst of energy. “If you’re okay with that. It’s a big favor.” Huh? Fluttershy smiled heavily. “Of course, why wouldn’t I be? I’m not doing anything these next few days. It would be my pleasure to help you out.” “Then it’s settled. I’ll swing by your cottage tomorrow and we’ll head out,” Dash gathered her thoughts. “I guess you might be a little confused on the details, huh?” “I know it’s in Cloudsdale, I just need to know the specifics.” “I already know the hotel I’m staying in. We can just stay there. I gotta practice the whole time, so you can cheer me on and spend some time exploring Cloudsdale. Thanks again! I can’t believe you would do this for me!” “I’m your best friend! I learned a thing or two from you; never leave a friend. Always be loyal. And I’m going to stick with it.” “I’ll see you tomorrow morning. I can go over a few more things then,” Dash opened the door to Fluttershy’s cottage. “Sounds great Dash. I had a wonderful night. Sleep tight!” Fluttershy hugged the athlete goodbye. The yellow pegasus slowly made her way up the stairs in an attempt to keep quiet for her animal friend's sake. That went well! I can’t wait to cheer her on! Her hooves met the fluff of her bed. I’m proud of you, ‘Shy. Way to be assertive! Fluttershy’s last thoughts of confidence ensured a smile on her sleeping face. > Right Behind You > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- "So my suggestion worked? You are going with Rainbow Dash. Hmm?” Rarity was relaxed in a bath next to her spa partner. “Yes. We walked and talked last night. I even did a few flying tricks; that’s why I was so eager to get here early today; I kinda crashed,” Fluttershy let the warm water soothe her sore muscles. “But it was alright. And Rainbow Dash really seems to want me to come with.” “Darling, did you nudge your feelings at all? Try to give her a little hint?” “Oh no.I mean, I told her I would really miss her but that was it. And it certainly didn’t seem like she got any hints from it,” Fluttershy lifted herself out of the spa-bath. “Which is fine for me. I just want to support her.” Fluttershy threw her eyes towards the ground and engaged in a frown. Rarity slapped her hooves against the surface of the water in protest. “But Fluttershy you are perfect for her! Why not? Is there a disadvantage? Think of the wonderful times you could have together!” Rarity lifted her hoof onto Fluttershy’s shoulder. “This is something you must do. For yourself, dear. And for Rainbow Dash.” “I’ll try I guess,. It’s just so much Rarity. So many new things... I don’t know... I guess... I don’t like risks.” “What risks? Am I hearing you right? Rainbow Dash would never abandon you! She’s the element of loyalty! Even if things do not go as planned, which is preposterous to begin with, she would always stick by you and never judge you dear.” “Rarity, can you keep your voice... Down?” Fluttershy did her best to hide her stress of the unknowns. “I shant! Never in the name of love!” “It’s not love! Just a crush. Please, Rarity, calm down.” “Darling, I’ve seen the way you look at her. Tell me why you love her? I have to know!” Fluttershy did her best to quiet her loud, energetic friend. “Maybe we can talk about this somewhere else. Somewhere where there aren't any other ponies-” “The more you don’t speak the louder I will become! I must know! Tell me about her! Tell me, tell me, tell me!” Rarity bounced with energy of a filly. “It’s hard to describe... we’ve been friends for so long... I like laughing with her... smiling. Having fun together; simply spending time with her. She’s that kind of pony.” “You could say that about any of our friends! Tell me what you find attractive about her!” The thought pierced Fluttershy’s comfort level; it was a topic she had never discussed with another pony. She felt trust with Rarity however, and attempted to converse her thoughts. “She’s really pretty but in a natural kind of way. I guess I like the way she soars in the air; it’s really beautiful and graceful, her rainbow trail is always amazing. I love her eyes; they’re so unique and full of energy. It’s hard to say really.” “That’s all? Well, I guess you’re too shy to talk about it. But don’t worry. I think I understand. Wait... I know I understand.” “Rarity?” “Oh,I have my ways. I know how a romance works. I’m the expert. And I can only see a wonderful future ahead. For both of you.” “Okay Rarity, and thank you for understanding.” Rarity put on a robe as she exited the spa. “Don’t thank me dear. It is my responsibility to ensure that all ponies find their true love!” Fluttershy let out a soft giggle. “That’s a big responsibility.” “One couple at a time dear.” Dash should be at the cottage soon. Waiting for me. Fluttershy trotted across Ponyville towards her home. Cloudsdale. I haven’t been there in a long time. Since the best fliers competition. The mare ruffled her feathers several times. Gotta get these ready. Lot’s of flying ahead. Especially with Dash; she’ll keep me on my wings. The animal-caretaker approached her cottage to find several different species of animals awaiting her arrival. Distinct cries of corresponding to the each animal soon followed. “Hello friends! How are each and everyone of you?” “We’re all waiting for you! What’s up pal?” “Rainbow Dash! It’s great to see you! Oh, am I late? Sorry!” “You’re not late, I’m early! I just came by to talk to you for a little while. You were at the spa right?” “With Rarity, yes. We had a nice time. Trying to rest my wings, you know? After you made me do all those fun tricks, I’m not used to flying that much.” “I’m sorry ‘Shy. I didn’t know it would make you sore like that,” Rainbow Dash made her way towards Fluttershy. “Are you game for going with me?” “Of course. And don’t worry I’m fine. It was totally worth it; I haven’t felt that excited in a long time.” “Well maybe I can help you with some more tricks when we are there? I can practice mine and after that, I can take a little break and watch you try some!” Fluttershy smiled at the thought. “Sounds good Dashie... I mean, Rainbow Dash.” “Na... It’s okay Fluttershy.” “You about ready? To leave, I mean.” Fluttershy brought Rainbow inside and reached for her saddlebags. “Of course I’m ready. It was my idea, Dash.” “Well, I’m not bringing much. I left it outside. Just one saddlebag; it’s outside right now.” “Twilight agreed to watch the cottage while I’m gone,” Fluttershy confirmed. “I’m ready whenever you are.” “What are we waiting for? I’ve already said my goodbyes this morning. Let’s get out of here pal!” “Wait!” Fluttershy cried. “I mean, I’m sorry, but I have to say goodbye to all my animals before I leave.” “Oh yeah,” Rainbow realized. “Take your time ‘Shy.” The yellow pegasus hovered through several rooms and took precious time with her various pets. “Alright Elizabeak, make sure you remember to stay inside the coop for Twilight. Momma will be home soon; I promise.” Rainbow Dash greeted many familiar faces around Fluttershy’s cottage; many participated in the best pet’s competition. Tank was enjoying a stay at Sweet Apple Acres; Applejack had volunteered to watch over him. “Hey Fluttershy? You said your wings were sore?” Rainbow asked. “Well, only a little. I’m fine. I promise.” “Why don’t I take your saddlebag? I fly better with even weight anyways.” “Are you sure?” Fluttershy didn’t particularly like the offer; it suggested she was too weak for Rainbow. “After a crash like that, I’m surprised you’re still flying! Don’t sweat it! Hand it over here!” “Thank you Dash. I can carry it; it isn’t a problem. You don’t have to...” “Quit repeating yourself! I got this!” Rainbow slung the saddlebag against her back. “All my animals are ready for me to leave. I’m ready. Whenever you are, that is.” Dash spread her wings about and threw herself upward. “Let’s go ‘Shy!” “Right behind you!” Fluttershy kept the pace with Dash; who seemed to enjoy the challenge that extra weight provided. The flight to Cloudsdale wasn’t particularly long; something that Fluttershy saw as a calming thought. Her main concern was with Rainbow Dash. Oh my, I hope this doesn’t affect her flying tomorrow. Or make her think I’m a weak friend. “You’re awful quiet back there Fluttershy,” Rainbow closed the distance between them. “Something on your mind?” Fluttershy felt a cyan feather impact her left wing. “Nothing Rainbow Dash.” “Oh come on. I know you. Something’s up.” The thought of lying to her friend alongside the futility of doing so forced Fluttershy to attempt the truth. “I really like spending time with you Rainbow Dash. And I don’t want to hold you back. Seeing you carry my bags,iIt kinda makes me sad.” “Now that’s just ridiculous! And you know it!” Dash stopped in midair. “You’re helping me! I should be the one carrying your bags! Why are we even talking about this? Come on, let’s keep going! I don’t want you feeling like this, okay?” “Thank you Rainbow Dash... I’ll stop thinking like that, I promise.” “Here we are!” Several pegasus buzzed around the elegant formation of clouds as the pair took their first step. “Well, let’s go to the hotel.” “Right behind you Rainbow Dash.” Rainbow greeted several pegasus while Fluttershy trotted beside her crush. Rainbow felt confident with a friend by her side; just as Fluttershy felt. “Hey! We’re looking for a room?” Rainbow opened the door to the hotel. “Right. How are you girls?” “I’m here for the Wonderbolt trials! Rainbow Dash; you’ve probably heard of me!” Rainbow flexed her wings. “And this is my support; Fluttershy!” “Let’s see... You already paid in advance so- here, room 27. Just go up the stairs and it should be on your left on the second floor,” the hotel worker handed them the key. “Have a good stay and good luck.” “Thanks!” Rainbow dismissed the attention from the desk and proceeded upward. “27, that’s a good number. A lucky one; I’m going to need it.” “Here we are,” Dash kicked the door open. “And... wow, this is awkward.” Fluttershy refused to reply, fearing the unknowns. “Darn it. Totally forgot about that,” Dash threw her bag down. “I didn’t change my room order. It’s a single bed room.” Fluttershy quickly attempted to fix the situation. “It’s okay, I can sleep on the couch.” “Really, I mean I guess so,” Rainbow turned her head in shame. “You come all this way to help me out and have to sleep on the couch. Why don’t you have the bed?” “I can’t have you sleeping on the couch,” Fluttershy claimed her spot. “You take the bed... I don’t want you sore... I mean, that would be terrible. And I’m fine.” “I hate to agree with you, but yeah, I don’t wanna risk being sore. I’ll make it up to you. I promise,” Dash began to unpack. “How about we go grab a bite to eat?” “Lead the way!” “There’s a restaurant downstairs. Let’s go get a quick snack.” “Hey Fluttershy?” Rainbow approached the stairs. “Race you down the stairs!” Fluttershy chuckled at the sight of the athlete.. She really knows how to bring fun into any situation, no matter how mundane. “Come on, I’ll even give you a head-start!” “Oh sorry,” Fluttershy ceased her thoughts. “I don’t need a head-start. I’d love to race Dash.” “I’d love to race?” Rainbow gently knocked Futtershy’s shoulder. “Come on, we gotta get some fire in you!” “I’m going to beat you... if that’s...” “Come on!” “You are going... I’m going...” Rainbow knocked her hooves together. “You’re awesome! Act like it!” “Look out Rainbow Dash!” Fluttershy stormed down the stairs. “‘Cause I’m about to kick your flank!” “Fluttershy?” Rainbow stood in disbelief. “Nopony beats Rainbow Dash in a race!” “Nopony... umm... well.. loses to Fluttershy?” Fluttershy followed by giggling with excitement. ““Oh, this is so much fun!” “Now you’re getting it!” Rainbow approached the ecstatic pegasus. “Now you are going what happens when you challenge me!” A chaotic mess of cyan and yellow fur erupted in massive collision. Hooves collided, wings fluttered, and mares struggled. “Victory,” Rainbow leapt beyond the last stair. “Sweet victory!” “I guess so Rainbow Dash! Maybe if you don’t tackle me next time I might win!” “I wasn’t going to let you win! Nopony-” “I know Rainbow Dash! That was a lot of fun!” “Sorry about the tackle,” Rainbow lifted her friend up. “Hope you’re okay.” “Oh, I’m fine. I actually.. sorta... well... liked it...” Fluttershy trailed off meekly. “Huh?” “I liked the race!” “Uh... Okay?” Rainbow Dash gazed at Fluttershy in mild shock, unable to believe what she was hearing. Fluttershy quickly changed the subject. “That race made me hungry.” “Hay yeah! Let’s go!” Dash’s previous gusto made an immediate return and she raced off toward the nearest table Fluttershy in tow. The two mares were quickly seated and awaited service. “How are you fine young mares doing today?” A waitress approached the pair and offered them menus. “Awesome! I’m here for the Wonderbolt trails! Rainbow Dash, I bet you’ve heard of me! And this is my good pal Fluttershy!” “Oh yes, you did that Sonic Rainboom in the Young Flyers Competition a while back. Good to see you are back in action.” “Back in action? I never stopped!” Rainbow handed the menu back. “Hit me up with some soda! And a big salad!” “Sure. And what will it be for you?” The waitress scribbled several notes on her order-sheet. “I think a water and a bowl of soup will be fine for me now,” Fluttershy replied. “Thank you very much. ” “I’ll be back with your drinks soon. Have a nice stay girls.” The waitress trotted off into the kitchen. “Have I told you about my double agility routine?” Rainbow’s eyes shone with the enthusiasm of a filly. “I don’t recall. Maybe you could refresh me?” Fluttershy smiled. Fluttershy had memorized nearly all of Rainbow’s routines, yet she was quite content to hear them again. “So I start by dashing through several clouds, followed by a...” The sight of the athlete’s enthusiasm and general love for life forced Fluttershy to lose herself in Rainbow Dash’s words as the mare rambled on and on. “Then I finish in style! Wait, I’m always in style! Then I’ll finish with an awesome amount of style! Like style and-” Rainbow spread her wings apart and lifted her hooves. “Coolness to the max!” “I think you might be too cool!” Fluttershy chuckled. “They won’t know what to do with all that awesomeness!” “As soon as I join the Wonderbolts, nopony is going to be able to handle me!” Fluttershy didn’t reply; both mares were content with the following silence. There wasn’t any room for formalities. They were simply happy to be laughing with each other. “One water...” The waitress came into view and placed the beverages on the table. “And one soda. Your salad and soup will be out soon.” “Hey thanks!” Dash took a quick sip of her soda. “Thank you very kindly,” Fluttershy smiled. “I’ll be soon with your food. Have a nice time.” Fluttershy emptied her glass in a under a minute, forcing a giggle out of Dash. “Jeez Fluttershy, thirsty?” “I haven’t been this active and excited in a long time. I guess it gets me thirsty... really thirsty!” “Well if you think this is fun, I got something to tell you. We haven’t even started yet!” “I can’t wait Dashie!" Fluttershy lit up like an excited filly. “That reminds me. Have I told you about my Speed Routine? The third one? It’s so awesome! You gotta hear about it! I start with a downward spiral...” “Don’t you worry, I’ll sleep well tonight! But we gotta get up early! Well, I do, I guess you can sleep in if you want,” Dash suggested as the pair entered the room exhausted. “You do what you want to do.” “I can be up with you Dash... that’s why I’m here, right? I mean, unless you want some alone time tomorrow,” Fluttershy placed herself upon the couch and reached for a pillow. “Your choice.” “Are you kidding me? I’d love to have you there! Quit being so formal!” “Well Dash, then I’m game... if that’s... sure Dash, I’m going!” “There you go! That’s what I want to hear!” “Well, if you insist I be assertive... I’m awfully tired. Is it okay if I head to bed early?” Dash reached for the light. “You read my mind. I’m tired too.” “Fluttershy?” Rainbow whispered amongst the darkness. “Yeah Rainbow?” “I’m glad to have you here.” Fluttershy found the comfort of the shadows a second time. “I’m proud to be with you as well.” Several cold chills jolted around Fluttershy’s coat. I really, if I could just, no... no... she wouldn’t want to do that. “‘Night ‘Shy!” “Sleep tight Dashie,” Fluttershy wrapped the blanket tightly. “Dream of a Sonic Rainboom.” Rainbow Dash was asleep in a matter of seconds while Fluttershy bounced thoughts through her head, using the darkness as a source of comfort. The athlete remained as boisterous in her sleep as her flight, rolling several times and spreading her hooves in various directions. She wouldn’t want to snuggle. Fluttershy glumly thought to herself as she made her slow descent into the realms of slumber, her dreams attempted to prove her wrong. > Light > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- “Rise and shine! No, rise and shine in style!” Several crusts scratched Fluttershy’s cyan eyes. No replies were spoken; fatigue strangled her already soft voice. “You said you wanted to get up early with me! Well, now is the time! Let’s get going! Come on!” A pair of muscular forelegs constricted a tight grip around the sleepy mare. “I need my best pal with me!” “Okay... okay Rainbow... Rainbow Dash... I’m... I’m here.” “Sleepy head!” Rainbow jolted Fluttershy on her hooves. “Chop chop!” Yawning with the force of a mouse, Fluttershy stretched her legs and reached for a glass of water. “Good morning Dash.” “Good morning? Are you kidding me? It’s a great morning! It’s always a great morning when you cruise with me!” “I’m ready Rainbow Dash,” Fluttershy whispered. “I’ll just grab a snack for the way out. Where do you want to practice?” “I know a place really close to this hotel. A quick flight away!” Rainbow’s wings spread with excitement. “Sure Rainbow Dash. Sorry you had to go through so much effort to wake me up.” Fluttershy’s eyes, still recovering from the morning, quickly met the ground. “What did I tell you about apologizing! Don’t do that! You don’t need to!” A hoof soon rested across Fluttershy’s shoulder. “I actually... well... you know...” “What is that, Rainbow Dash?” “I need... I need the cheering! And I need the crowd!” “Dashie, you don’t have to lie to me. What were you going to say?” “You know, I’m like totally awesome and everything... but... I need... I need...” “It’s okay,” Fluttershy soothed. “I’m your best friend. You can tell me anything.” “You.” Dark embers roasted inside Equestria’s kindest heart. The air compacted every inch of yellow between a layer of heat and pressure. “I need my friend with me. I need to know that somepony is right with me. I want somepony to remind me of what I still have at home. I need support. And I need you.” Rainbow Dash stepped back, feeling her cheeks heat up. “You know what, my tricks are way cooler with my pal around. So yeah, totally get ready! Let’s go!” Me? No, she needs a friend. Not me. Thoughts engaged in a violent clash inside the mare’s head. “‘Shy? You alright? Equestria to Fluttershy. Do you come in?” “Sorry, I’m just so tired,” Fluttershy shrugged at the weak nature of her lies. “Yes... and thank you Rainbow Dash. Everypony needs friends. Everypony needs support. Don’t worry about it.” “Hey, I didn’t say any sappy thing like that!” Rainbow giggled. “Now, don’t tell anypony! Pinkie-promise?” “Cross my heart, hope to fly, stick a cupcake in my eye.” “Now what you are going to see next? That, well, you can tell everypony! Actually, I want you to tell everypony! The world must know!” Rainbow descended into her usual ramblings, speaking with the boast of Applejack and the intensity of Pinkie Pie. “I don’t know Rainbow Dash! Maybe you could show me your tricks first, then I could go around telling everypony,” Fluttershy teased. “Equestria’s fastest pegasus isn’t all talk, right?” Sparks jittered every strand of hair of Rainbow cyan coat. “Is that a challenge Fluttershy?” “Yes certainly... I mean, yeah totally. It’s totally a challenge Rainbow!” “No challenge is too great for me! And work on talking... um... cooler, Fluttershy.” “Then I guess... well... um... how about... we both have awesome challenges! Woo hoo!” Rainbow opened the door for her friend. “Better, but it needs practice. Unlike my flying!” “Nopony’s perfect,” Fluttershy closed the door. “But I guess you are pretty close Rainbow Dash.” “Rainbow Dash! I can’t believe it! That was so... umm... awesome? Woo hoo!” Fluttershy cheered. “Awesome? No that was cool to the max! Cool beyond cool! I can’t even explain it! That’s how cool that trick was!” Rainbow roared. “You rock!” “Alright, that’s enough boasting for me. I don’t want anypony to see me and get jealous or anything. Wait, I do want that,” Rainbow lost herself. “Anyway, let’s see you try!” “Me? You know I can’t top that, or even come close,” Fluttershy shrunk. “Get on up here filly! Come on, right here, right now! Don’t make me make you get up here!” No. I can’t do that, Fluttershy clashed her thoughts. But it would be fun. “Five seconds and I drag you up here!” Be assertive! Get what you want for a change! “Three-” She’s going to tackle me again. Be cool Fluttershy. “Two-” Oh Celestia! This is wrong! You’re selfish! “One! Ready or not, here comes Rainbow Dash!” “Eeeep!” In a blur of rainbow, the frightened mare found herself high in the sky, safe in the grip of her friend. “Right. You have wings. Now use them.” Wings? “Got get ‘em ‘Shy!” Keep going! You’re a great flyer. Do it for yourself! Do it for Rainbow Dash! “Come on! Double back-flip! You can do it!” You got it! Keep it up! “That’s it! Keep going! You got this girl!” “Rainbow Dash! I’m doing it!” “Finish strong!” "I did it!" “Fluttershy that was awesome!” Fluttershy’s adrenaline spiked to a level previously unreachable. The tricks, already a rush beyond the bashful mare’s standards, were dwarfed by the following events. Her mind raced with the series of events and if her chilled nerves were any indication, she had already lost. “What’s the matter ‘Shy?” Nothing. “You did great! I’m so proud of you! Here, hold on, I’ll let go of you.” No. “Talk to me girl!” “Rainbow don’t let me go!” Dreams became a reality. Tightly pressed in a soft cradle, Fluttershy hoped to Celestia that the moment would never end. “Huh?” Act fast! “Um... I’ll guess I’ll carry you back, okay?” “Rainbow sorry... I’m... I’m scared,” she lied rather poorly. “Thank you.” “You okay?” “This is just so much for me to handle,” she said, which was true. “But so exciting!” “This is cool! Carrying you while flying, it’s a good workout!” Rainbow was apparently oblivious to Fluttershy’s mixed joy and anxiety. “There you go!” Rainbow placed the exhausted mare on a cloud. “That was, well, let’s just say I’m almost impressed!” “I thought when you have to catch a pony, she wouldn’t be a very good flier!” Her nerves were soothed enough to allow a giggle. “I totally didn’t catch you; I got in the way! Nothing can stop you!” “Always saving somepony, huh Rainbow Dash?”A familiar voice echoed through the void of the sky. “Spitfire?” “I saw your name on the tryout list and I was real excited! This is big news! About time you finally fly with us!” Spitfire landed next to the two mares and greeted Rainbow Dash with a bro-hoof. “Really? I mean, yeah, it is about time!” Rainbow bounced. “I was just flying around until I saw you... and, hey wait, I know you! You’re that awesome pegasus who saved the day!” Spitfire offered her a hoof. “Fluttershy, right? You flew like a champion!” “Thank you...” Where once she was filled with joy, Fluttershy could only now feel intimidation. Spitfire meant well in her approach, but Fluttershy couldn’t help feeling a little weak in comparison to both mares. “She’s my best pal! I’ve known her since we were both fillies! And she’s here to cheer me on during practice!” Rainbow quickly trotted to Fluttershy’s side. “It’s nice to always have support, that’s for sure. I wish my friends would have been there with me when I joined up,” Spitfire sympathized. “If I remember you correctly, I bet you are more than ready!” “Are you kidding? I’m always ready! Hay, I was born ready!” Dash knocked her hoof. “Hey don’t sweat it. I’ve seen you fly Rainbow Dash. I’m pretty impressed.” Spitfire spread her wings. “Really? I mean, yeah, totally!” “See you Rainbow! Nice seeing you again Fluttershy! See you both at the tryouts!” Spitfire descended towards Cloudsdale, flying with precision that only Dash could rival. “Oh my gosh, she is so awesome! Are you watching her fly? I wanna be like her! Oh my gosh! That’s going to be me!” Rainbow shook a shell shocked Fluttershy several times to ensure her attention. “She’s really laid-back. She seems like a really nice pony.” Fluttershy timidly replied, doing her best to recover her mind. She’s everything I’m not. This life... it’s everything I’m not. “I can’t wait! Like really, I don’t think I can! I might explode! Ohmygoshohmygosh!” Silence complimented the next few moments. “So, we going to practice some more?” Dash took to flight. “I can just watch.” “What’s the matter?” “Nothing.” “No... something’s up,” Dash landed next to her. “Sorry about that trick. You didn’t have to do it.” Rainbow’s sympathy only intensified Fluttershy’s insecurity. “Rainbow, no, it’s okay.” Her left hind leg began to shake softly but steadily. “Not when my friend is sad! Come on, put a smile on!” You can’t keep up with her. She’ll go onto bigger and better things. Without you. “Come on! Don’t leave me hanging here! What’s wrong?” Dash was beginning to exhibit mild signs of panic. “Nothing Rainbow Dash. Still recovering from that fall,” she lied. “Okay...” Fluttershy’s attempts to lie were beyond Rainbow Dash. “We’ll talk about this later. How about we freshen our minds with some tricks?” “Sure...” Confidence can’t be bought, conjured, or created. True confidence can only be earned through a series of gradual ups-and-downs. The path towards confidence isn’t a road, rather it more closely resembles a dark cavern; light exists at the end for most ponies. Fluttershy wasn’t fortunate enough to have discovered her light. Rainbow Dash’s wings could carry the mare wherever her life demanded her. She was perfect. Her goals were in her hooves, she carried herself with supreme pride, and most of all, she knew herself. “Check this out!” Fluttershy organized her thoughts to include her evaluation of Rainbow’s flawless tricks and her own mental struggles. “Awesome Rainbow! Woo hoo!” Fluttershy managed to hide her mood. “And this one!” The duration of the next hour varied immensely for the two ponies. Rainbow Dash’s time died at the same speed as her flight. It also shared the same style, enjoyment, and passion. Self-doubts strangled Fluttershy’s perception and dragged them downward in time. Her lack of confidence was irrational to everypony except for herself. These feelings of anxiety could only make sense to Fluttershy as well. They were certainly sporadic, and it took very little to trigger them if the circumstances were met. Ponyville was all too familiar; a perfect place to dull her immunity to the unknowns. The last time this had happened was during the Cloudsdale water incident. Perhaps seeing Spitfire again brought back bad memories. Or, most likely, the pressure of losing Rainbow Dash to a life of fame lit her anxious fire. There was nothing wrong with Spitfire. In fact, she was a wonderful pony and a great role model for Rainbow Dash. Most ponies would recall Fluttershy overcoming her fears and saving Cloudsdale. Negative memories hit the timid mare much harder, more so than any positive memories. The sight of Spitfire catalyzed the final switch. Fluttershy was having an anxiety attack. “Fluttershy? Look, I’m starting to feel... well... a little sad. And I don’t know why. I can tell you are sad. So I guess seeing you being sad makes me sad. I wanna know what’s up.” “Rainbow Dash... I’m fine.” “Quit playing that game.” Rainbow added a stern tone to her voice. “I don’t know how...look, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t be this way. This is your day. Your weekend. A start of your new life. And I’m ruining it.” “Is this what this is all about?” Rainbow quickly lifted Fluttershy to her feet and engulfed her in a hug. “Fluttershy, I don’t know what I’d do without you! I need you with me here!” “I’ll... I’ll get better. I promise.” “I want you to get better! I need my pal!” Rainbow trotted towards Cloudsdale with Fluttershy by her side. “Why don’t we go get something to eat and talk about this? “Thank you Rainbow Dash.” “You don’t need to thank me. I’m just returning the favor." "I've having a great time. I don't want you to think otherwise," Fluttershy said. "I just have sometimes where I don't feel so great. Nothing you need to worry about. You have so much more important things-" "No," Rainbow stopped Fluttershy mid-sentence. "Friends first. Always." "I'm not sure you will understand it..." "Then you'll be darned sure I'll try," Dash rose triumphantly. "No friend of mine is going to feel sad!" The pair descended into Cloudsdale with Rainbow Dash leading her frightened friend. A few minutes would pass before they found themselves back at the hotel. "So Fluttershy, what's up?..." > Flight School > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- “Fluttershy, just tell me. I’m your friend and I’m here for you. I can’t have you like this. I won’t have you like this.” Fluttershy rocked back and forth. “I trust you Rainbow Dash. I trust you more than any pony.” “I trust you Fluttershy. And I’m not leaving until I know you are okay.” “It isn’t something I can’t explain... it’s just something I have always had. I’m not sure you will understand...” “Then I’ll try,” Rainbow took a seat next to Fluttershy. “Don’t worry.” A few breaths cycled through Fluttershy’s shivering figure. “I... I’m not sure when it started... but...” Pegasi of all ages and skill dashed through the clouds at Equestria’s finest flight camp. The grounds were filled with energy and competition. Any winged colt or filly would dream of even stepping a hoof in Cloudsdale’s Flight School. An invitation to join would leave most pegasi ecstatic. Fluttershy stood nervously at the steps gazing up in awe at the spectacle. Her gangly legs, weak wings, and bashful temperament were all too alien in a school for champions. If the contents of her class list schedule were part of the school curriculum, Fluttershy would likely receive several scholarships. Every five minutes the page would be slammed into her vision, ensuring no mistakes would ever haunt the filly’s day. “Room 12, section 1,” she says to herself as her legs scurry along the hallways. “Room 12, section 1! Come on Fluttershy! You don’t wanna be late!” A yellow saddlebag was straddled alongside her matching torso. Most ponies would have several patterns engraved on their bags; even those without cutie marks still enjoyed decorated them. Fluttershy preferred to keep her’s blank in fear of anything that would make her stand out. Innocent, frightened eyes peered inside the glass of the door. A few select ponies were shuffling their books on the cloud desks. The teacher was relaxed on a chair, apparently checking several sheets of paper. Fluttershy gulped a few breaths of air at the thought of her victory. She was early, and therefore, unlikely to draw attention. The door creaked open as Fluttershy applied delicate pressure with her shaking hoof. A few eyes peered at her as she made her way towards the back of the classroom. “Flight Basics 101,” she whispered. “Quill, books, notebook.” “Find your seat and get your books ready please,” said the teacher to approaching students. “We start class in three minutes.” Everything was in perfect order. She had counted the number of seats between herself and other ponies. Two to the left. Three to the right. And two to the front. She hoped it would stay that way. “And it is 8:00 AM. Good morning. My name is Mr. Gust and I’m going to be your teacher for Flight Basics,” he followed by writing his name on the chalkboard. “I’ll start with attendance.” Fluttershy sorted through various ideas of what was acceptable for an attendance recognition. She decided to listen to the other ponies before her and copy their approach. “Accel Wind?” the teacher asked. “Here,” the student replied. “Easy,” she whispered. “You can do this just fine Fluttershy.” “Fluttershy?” “Here.” “Falcon?” “Here!” Hiding behind a fortress of shy, she smiled softly at the smooth nature of the day. She got to class fine, she got through attendance, she had all the right books. Nothing went wrong. “We are going to get started right away with our basic flight test. Could I have everypony follow me?” Mr. Gust formed a line of eager pegasi behind him. “We are going to the main courtyard.” Fluttershy knew this day would come, however, she had convinced herself that the first day would only involve books. Where her mind once offered reassurance, now it reminded her of everything that could possibly go wrong. “It’s right over here class. Just follow me out the door.” Mr. Gust opened the door and shuffled the class outside. Fluttershy crept at the end of the line, trying to pace her breaths. The class was assembled into one row of spectators. Mr. Gust spread his wings and asked for the class's attention. He was a middle-aged stallion, and clearly had a few years of experience. Gust was cool, confident, and laid-back in the presence of his new students. “Now. Everypony spread your wings and when I count to three I want you to follow my lead. We are only going to hover for a few seconds. Is everypony ready?” Gust received an eager reply from all but one particular filly. “Right. Just like this. Beat your wings slowly but powerfully. Make sure your feathers gather as much air as possible.” Tiny wings rapidly chopped the surrounding air. The vast majority of fillies and colts managed to hover. A few ponies gained several feet upward. “Why don’t you try over there? It’s okay. We’re all new to this.” Gust made his way to Fluttershy. “I’m not... I haven’t... I’m not a good flier Mr. Gust.” “Fluttershy right? Don’t worry. We are all in same boat. Here, I’ll help you.” The stallion lifted her wings delicately. “You got this. Don’t think too hard.” “Okay..” “You are doing great! Keep it up!” “I’m doing it! I’m doing-” A yellow face crashed into a blanket of cloud. A silent wish was made immediately following the crash. Fluttershy hoped she could remain in the cloud forever. Free from judgement and expectations. Free from fear. “It’s okay Fluttershy. You can do it! Give it another try.” Gust patted the filly gently on her back. “You just give it your best effort.” “What a loser. In flight school and can’t even fly.” “I know right? Guess Fluttershy can hardly fly.” Gust apparently had missed the comments of various students, focusing all of his attention on Fluttershy. However she could feel the insults burning holes in her already damaged morale. She was not fortunate enough to free her mind from the insults. Another try only produced the same results. “Don’t worry. That’s all you need to do for now. Rest your wings for a little bit. Nice job Fluttershy,” Gust said. “I’m proud of you. That was a great improvement.” “Thank you.” “Alright class. I need you to follow my steps just like before...” Fluttershy wiped the remaining cloud off her face and scurried into the protection of the crowd. The class continued on without Fluttershy. Her hooves shivered, her wings froze. “Today was supposed to be perfect,” she said to herself. “Everything would go right.” The class ended an hour after the initial flight test. Fluttershy had managed to avoid conversation with any other pony; they clearly were not interested in a pegasus that could barely fly. Or at least, interested in becoming her friend. “That is it for today class. It’s been a pleasure meeting you all and I am looking forward to seeing you tomorrow. Same place, same time.” Gust dismissed the class. Fluttershy waited for the class to leave before exiting the room herself. Her vision was focused solely on the ground. Eye contact was nearly as intimidating to Fluttershy as flying. “Hey! I know you! You’re that pegasus who can’t fly!” Fluttershy lifted her head to find a group of colts. “Yeah! What a loser! Goes to Flight School, can’t even fly! Do you think this is a joke?” another colt said. “I’m sorry.” “You’re sorry? Here, how about we make you a better flier.” The colt snagged Fluttershy’s saddlebag within a second. Fluttershy lacked both the confidence and skill to prevent the theft. “Come on! Get it back!” Tears rolled down yellow cheeks. “Come on you dumb filly! Fly!” "Please!” she pleaded. “I’m sorry! I can’t fly! Please I need my saddlebag!’ “Okay, why didn’t you say so?” the colt apparently thought his tormenting was intelligent. “Catch!” The bag impacted Fluttershy hard, forcing her to collapse on the floor. “Okay, now that made my day. She can’t fly, and now she can’t even catch a damn bag? Why the hell are you even in Flight School?” The colt returned alongside his friends. “I’ll see you tomorrow Fluttershy. Let’s hope you can fly.” The group made their way outside, leaving Fluttershy alone in the hallway. “Why?” she cried into the empty building. “Why me?” Fluttershy quickly trotted towards her door, using all her remaining willpower to hold in her tears. Her saddlebag was quickly thrown on the ground, spilling the carefully organized contents in a irregular mess. “Why?” Her face dove into her mattress. “I had everything right! I wasn’t going to do anything wrong!” She was being cooked alive. The anxiety chose to manifest itself as feelings of heat and pressure. Her muscles ached with scorching heat. A few select chills went against the grain, tingling her spine with cold pain. She sobbed for hours. Each tear only increased the pressure and pain. It was going to be a long school-year. “Fluttershy, come here.” A pair of cyan forelegs snuggled the sobbing mare. “I’m so sorry!” her words were interrupted by sobs. “I’ve ruined everything, haven’t I?” “No!” Rainbow hushed her. “You are fine. Don’t worry about me. Was this the first time?” “Yes,” she managed to calm herself. “I’ve had many more attacks. Especially during Flight School.” “You know when I first met you? When I stood up for you? Where those the same bullies?” “No,” Fluttershy made eye contact with Rainbow. “Rainbow... when you helped me... that was the first time I ever felt better.” “It was the right thing to do. Just like right now. I’m here you for pal. I don’t know what to do. But I’m here for you.” “I’m just not sure what to do Rainbow Dash.” “I’m not sure. I do know that we’re in this together. And we’ll get through it. Together.” Fluttershy, basking in the comfort and security of her friend, finally soothed her tears by diving into slumber. Rainbow Dash was awake for a few seconds afterward. “Goodnight pal. We’ll get you better. I promise,” she whispered before joining her in sleep. > Do It For Yourself > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- “Hey Fluttershy!” Fluttershy felt like suffocating. A group of fillies surrounded her, killing her immense need for personal space. “Yes...” “So, are you alone this Hearts and Hooves day again?” “Yes...” “Figures. You aren’t exactly the real looker, are you? Or much of anything really...” The fillies received a response, though it wasn’t vocal. This was all the better to them; it was easier to ignore misery without words. “No colts at all? So what are you going to do? Spend your night alone again?” Watery eyes bobbed up and down. “You should go! Maybe we can find you a nice mare!” “We might need somepony a little more in her league...” a filly trailed off. “Hmm... let’s see. We’ll start looking... a mare who can’t fly... has the guts of a guppy... and can’t even talk to people! Wow, what a combination! I’m sure Fluttershy will tons of options!” “What do you say Fluttershy? Why don’t we go get you a marefriend? We’ll make sure she’s in your league. We wouldn’t want to embarrass anypony by pairing them with you.” “I don’t want to go... I’m fine being alone...” “Why not? Even losers need love!” Several of them give off cruel laughs, enjoying the torment they are inflicting upon the sacred filly in front of them. The bullies, apparently full from their meal of emotions, broke their circle and let Fluttershy out. The filly ran for her sanity. “See you at the dance, FlutterCry!” “Eeep!” The jump from dreams to reality hit her like a lightning bolt. Her cheeks were wet, body sore from pain, and brain exhausted from confusion. Her shakes were enough to rattle the bed. Rainbow Dash had many of the same symptoms. Her cheeks were wet, though not to the extent of Fluttershy’s. Her tummy inhaled and exhaled deeply, and despite being in perfect slumber, Fluttershy could sense a hint of worry in her friend. Fluttershy splashed a glass of water over her sorrowed face. The fresh water mixed with the salty tears and slowly dripped off her yellow cheeks to the sink. Her hooves gently massaged her fatigued cheeks. A pair of bloodshot eyes was all that the mirror offered Fluttershy. Her eyelids quickly shut at the sight of themselves; an interesting paradox indeed. She rubbed them several times, giving only a few seconds of relief before increasing the swelling. “You did this,” she whispered to herself. “Ruining your own vacation? That’s one thing. Ruining Rainbow Dash’s over your own problems? That’s horrible and selfish. Grow up... Fluttercry.” In Fluttershy’s world, “Fluttercry” was logical. It allowed her to insult herself; to channel all of her anger inside. To find meaning in all of life’s ups and downs, as if her actions were the cause of them. It was an efficient solution to her problem. Fluttershy didn’t realize, however, that it wasn’t the right solution. A few irregular taps kicked the floor. She fought for control of her left hind leg. Every inch of willpower inside of her battled to keep it straight and steady. “Act normal!” Her hoof apparently didn’t respond to her begs. “What is wrong with-” She had forgotten about Rainbow Dash. The mare was still soundly asleep, however, Fluttershy wasn’t going to take any chances. Take your problems with you. Dashie has already been through enough. She found great comfort in bossing herself around. It was yet another mental-game she could play to place the blame on herself. The order it imposed upon herself was yet another positive factor. Leave the hotel and figure yourself out! You can get back to Rainbow Dash all happy and ready to cheer her on. You can put all of this behind you. It’s your fault, and you have to fix it. Fluttershy flew off feeling as if there were a storm cloud hanging over her. Bright yellow wings carried the mare through the early night sky as she battled with herself. The evening was pleasant enough; Luna’s craft illuminated the sky, giving the weary pegasi’s heart a much needed boost. She landed on a cloud, dumping her tired from down upon it with a sigh. Her flight acted as a sort of therapy; her physical symptoms were slowly dying. Her mental symptoms were all but immortal however, and it would take much time before they retracted into her mind, ready to strike at any moment. Her tired figure snuggled against the puffy whites. The moonlight was just strong enough to illuminate the yellow on her coat. Crying was beyond her now, instead, every thought and emotion was channeled into her extreme disappointment. Her disappointment in herself. Rainbow Dash. Her best friend. Her secret love. Fluttershy wanted nothing more than the embrace of her friend. To be love her and to be loved. Now, she knew she had ruined everything, every chance for her love. Even worse, she had destroyed any chance for Rainbow Dash to have a successful weekend. “Fluttershy?” An unexpected pony arrived, interrupting her wallowing like a breath of fresh air. Realizing that hiding was not an option, Fluttershy lifted her shaking body from the cloud and attempted to make herself look presentable. “What’s wrong? Are you okay?” Fluttershy hung her head, ashamed of herself in the presence of the wonderbolts captain.“Hi Spitfire...” Spitfire gently lands next to her and throws a hoof on her shoulder. “Come on. What’s going on?” “Nothing...” “Is something wrong with Rainbow Dash?” Spitfire suggested. “It’s okay. I’m just trying to help.” “Rainbow Dash... she’s fine... I just... it’s me... I’m not feeling so great.” “Well, that’s a big shame. What is Rainbow Dash going to do without her friends?” “She’ll... she’ll be fine...” “You wanna know something Fluttershy?” Spitfire lifted Fluttershy off the cloud. Fluttershy refused to meet the Wonderbolts gaze, inducing a painful silence as her only reply. “When I was trying out... hay... that was a long time ago...” The wonderbolt began her story with a sincere tone.”I was... well... I didn’t have anypony with me...” “Really?” Fluttershy said in disbelief. “I was alone. And... well... let’s just say it’s easier with ponies that care about you around. I was nervous... and nopony was there to help me out. Wanna know something Fluttershy?” Fluttershy was beginning to grow comfortable with Spitfire. “What is that?” “I almost failed my first time. I was so nervous... I barely managed to get by. I didn’t have any reason to perform. Some ponies say you can do everything for yourself... but I’m not sure about that. I felt like I didn’t have any reason to try my best. And now I’m the Captain of the team. You know why?” Fluttershy eagerly awaited a reply. “I met Soarin’. He was... he is great. I love him. He gives me a reason to do my best. I can’t imagine what I would do without him. You know what? I think Rainbow Dash needs a little support too.” “Huh?” Fluttershy felt a jolt of uncertainty. “Nothing. I’m just seeing a little bit of myself in you. I’ll admit, I don’t know you well enough to know your problems, but I do know that Rainbow Dash needs you. She wouldn’t bring you here if she didn’t. You need to be right there with her.” She’s right! Fluttershy thought. Go up there and be by her side. Do it for Rainbow Dash! Do it for yourself! “Fluttershy? You there?” “Oh... I’m sorry,” Fluttershy apologized. “I was just thinking... Spitfire, you are right. Thank you so much... why are you doing this for me?” Spitfire giggled. “Like I said, I saw a little bit of you in myself. And I don’t know, but I think you like Rainbow Dash. And I can’t speak for her, but I’m sure Rainbow Dash would love to be with you.” ”How... what?” “Oh come on... I’ve only met you twice, and I can tell that you guys are meant to be together. I’ll see Rainbow Dash and you tomorrow.” Spitfire triumphantly took off the cloud and dove into Luna’s night. A few minutes passed as Fluttershy gathered her thoughts. To her amazement, most were positive. Her wings confidently spread and carried her back to the hotel. After her little talk the night seemed far more Fluttershy’s anxiety was still very much alive, she was now capable of fighting it. Only one thought could properly combat it however. Rainbow Dash. She opened the door to several loud, irregular snores. Rainbow Dash was tossing and turning on the large bed, apparently dreaming of her flight routines. Do it... for Rainbow Dash. Taking a deep breath the shy mare approached her friend, yellow hooves daintily stepping over the clouds as if they were a minefield. Her hooves gently placed a pillow a few inches away from Rainbow Dash, and she tried to make herself comfortable. “Eeep!” She had never planned on becoming a pillow, but after several cyan hooves snuggled her body, Fluttershy accepted her new position. Still asleep, Rainbow Dash snored right into her new pillow. This was okay for Fluttershy. She didn’t need to sleep; her dreams had come true. > I Care About You > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- No amount of preparation could prepare Rainbow Dash for the sight before her. She couldn’t train, couldn’t use her natural skills, couldn’t fly her way out of it. She readied her mental sword at the greatest challenge of her young life; why was she using her friend as a pillow and why was Fluttershy allowing it? Tiny, innocent breaths strangled Rainbow’s ears before digging their way into her mind. Mountains of toughness, rough and tough attitude, and a love for all things athletic began to avalanche at the sight before her. Fluttershy was adorable. Soft and cuddly. Tiny embers roasted inside her delicate figure. Cyan forelegs had gathered a great deal of Fluttershy’s warmth, allowing Dash to bear-hug the sleeping beauty. Wait... Rainbow Dash spit out the sentiment. Snuggling? Really? This... is … so... not me! Dash’s grip was loosened at a snail’s pace. Her first hoof gently scuffed the opposite side of the cloud bed, effectively freeing half her grip. The athlete’s final challenge was nesting the the comfort of Fluttershy’s wing. Occasionally a breeze would ruffle the yellow feathers, tickling every nerve of Dash’s leg. When the going gets tough, she triumphantly thought, the tough get going. Dash navigated her hoof through the forest of feathers. Every bit of her massive willpower was utilized to ignore the massive tickle sensations that sent thrills down her spine. A silent cheer was made as the tip of her hoof crossed the feathery finish line. A yellow hoof swiped weakly at the escaping mare, not wanting to relinquish the warm body that had been pressed up the timid mare. A second hoof struck out, hooking Dash, forcing her into a brief struggle. As the cyan mare slunk away, grateful for no further assaults upon her ego, she heard a soft cry. A glimpse displayed a heartbroken Fluttershy wrapping her hooves around her pillow as if caught in the hope that it would offer the same warmth that the retreating Rainbow Dash did. “Sorry Flutters,” Dash whispered. “That’s just not me.” Her wingspan awoke soon afterwards. The wings tingled with joy as fresh blood rushed through their muscles. Dash had always enjoyed mornings, particularly in the fact that it offered an opportunity to be ahead of everypony else. Her hooves fumbled through the small pantry in hopes of finding a suitable breakfast. Two glasses were placed on the small table, followed by another pair of plates. She quickly dumped ice in the glasses and threw silverware next to the plates. Dash finished by pouring the glasses with water and placing several items on the table. “Hey ‘Shy... time to get up...” “Rainbow..? Dashie?- Fluttershy scurried about, flailing her hooves like a wildpony. “Rise and shine! I got breakfast ready!” “What... what... what happened? Dashie?” Fluttershy struggled to find her consciousness. “Come on! Let’s chow down on and get ready!” “Okay Dash... what-” Fluttershy yawned. “What happened?” “You are just a sleepyhead! Come on, we’re burning daylight!” Dash rested the kitchen table waiting for Fluttershy. “Okay,” Fluttershy whispered. She joined Dash at the table and reached for a glass of water. She shot water down her throat, eliminating all of the morning taste. Both pegasus avoided the elephant in the room. They focused solely on their meals, occasionally letting loose a brief yawn. “Okay...” Dash broke the silence. “We should get going.” “Sounds good Dash...” Dash opened the door and led her friend outside. Fluttershy moved slowly but surely, acting as a sort of shadow to Rainbow Dash. They sped down the stairs at increasingly contrasted paces. There was more to the situation then both let on, however, neither had the strength to deal with it. The feelings of last night had become extinct. “Hey... you okay?” The question hit Fluttershy hard. She had wished Rainbow had put everything behind her. “Yeah... same old Fluttershy. Don’t worry about me... I’m... I’m here for you Rainbow Dash.” “Fluttershy I know that. You are forgetting something though,” Dash replied. “What’s that Rainbow Dash?” “I’m here for you too.” A slow smile spread across the shy mares face. Of course she is. “‘Shy? You there?” “Well um...” Come on, just tell her. You can do it. “Oh my gosh, look at that! Rainbow Dash!” “Well if it isn’t Rainbow Dash and her little marefriend?” Fluttershy cowered at the sight of a long-lost enemy. Dash stood proud over her friend, protecting her almost in a motherly manner. The stallion began to close the distance between them. “You here to watch the Wonderbolt tryouts? Well, you’ll see me there. Glad you got company with you. It’s going to be rough watching me break all those records.” “Lightning Flicker, I wished I would never see you again. It’s a shame I was wrong.” Rainbow Dash firmly scuffed her hooves against the ground in a threatening pose. “And how is Fluttercry? You with Dashie now? Huh?” “None of your business! Why don’t we settle this... Wonderbolt to colt?” Puffs of rage puffed out Rainbow’s nostrils. “As much as I’d like to, I have plans. And I wouldn’t want to show up late. See you later girls.” The stallion pushed his way through the pair and climbed up the steps. “Are you okay Fluttershy? I’d never thought we’d see that jerk again.” Dash lifted Fluttershy from her cowering position. “Yeah. I’m okay. Rainbow Dash?” “Yeah Fluttershy?” “I don’t want you to... I don’t think... please don’t get into a fight. I worry about you... I care about you.” Fluttershy cheeks rushed with blood. “Thanks Fluttershy. I always want to make sure you are cool too. If he would ever be mean to you-” Her speech was cut by a raged hoof kicked the ground. Fluttershy’s frowned at her futile attempt. Dash was either oblivious or apathetic to Fluttershy’s hints. She didn’t know which was worse. “Thank you Rainbow Dash. Just don’t fight him. You are a better pony than that.” “Okay Fluttershy. I promise. Cross my heart, hope to fly, stick a cupcake in my eye.” “Thank you Rainbow Dash.” “Now,” Dash said. “Let’s get to those tricks!” “Double barrel roll! Triple twist! Check this one out!” Dash repeated her same trick over and over again, never ceasing to amaze Fluttershy. Each trick required a massive amount of coordination between every feather on her wings. The aerial artist used her body as a paint brush; leaving a beautiful rainbow trail through sky blue. “And another one! Check this out!” Fluttershy’s cheers was soft; even for herself. Rainbow Dash was too into the moment to properly understand the extent of her friend’s issues. However Fluttershy let her worries drop away in the presence of her crush, content to watch and enjoy. The artistic chaos of Rainbow’s tricks suddenly gained a new angle. Brilliant streaks of orange contrasted the rainbow in both intensity and skill. It was beautiful. “Spitfire?” “Looking pretty good Rainbow Dash. I’m impressed.” “Spitfire?” Dash halted mid air. “Yep. I was just out for a morning flight. Kind of hard to miss you, that’s for sure. You really have these down.” “Really? Ohmygosh! Wait, I mean, of course! I’ve been practicing so much! I’m totally going to blow everpony’s mind! It’s going to be intense!” Rainbow boasted. “I’m sure of it. Hey Fluttershy! How you doing?” “I’m... I’m good. Hi Spitfire,” Fluttershy meekly replied. “Why don’t you show me another Rainbow Dash? I’ll rate your tricks after you are down,” Spitfire suggested. “It’s on! Check this out!” Dash proceeded to repeat a loop of various tricks. Spitfire landed right next to Fluttershy. “So, how are you doing?” Spitfire said. “I’m fine,” Fluttershy lied. “And Rainbow Dash?” “You know...” Fluttershy’s eyes glazed over as her attention focused upon the pony of her heart's desires who continued to gracefully flip in the sky. “Know what?” Spitfire prompted. The wonderbolt followed Fluttershy’s gaze. “You haven’t asked her yet have you?” Spitfire asked. “Oh no. I couldn’t... I-I mean... I couldn't bare it if she said no.” “You can’t let that hold you back. I love Soarin’, but oh boy, did I have to work with him during our first dates. Boy, he likes pie...” Spitfire realized that she was trailing off. “Anyway, you have to take risks.” “Spitfire, I don’t mean to be rude, but why are you helping me?” “I guess I see a lot of myself in you. And I want to help. Helping feels good, you know?” “Yes. Helping does feel good.” Fluttershy smiled. Perhaps Spitfire was somewhat similar to her. “I think Rainbow needs to worry less about those tricks. She’s perfectly fine. I think you two should just have some relaxing time. Just chill, you know? Maybe talk things over?” “I don’t want to interrupt her tricks. This is what she’s here for. I... I wouldn’t want to interrupt.” Fluttershy timidly replied. “Hey... don’t worry. Remember who you are talking too. I have the final say in the tryouts, and trust me Fluttershy, Rainbow is ready.” Fluttershy giggled softly. “You know Dash. Once she get’s going, she rarely stops.” “Just like before, remember who you are talking to,” Spitfire laughed. The Wonderbolt took off towards Rainbow’s direction, leaving Fluttershy to eagerly await the results. “Wasn’t that perfect Sptifire? Awesome? Super-awesome? Double-awesome? Come on, you gotta tell me!” Rainbow hovered next to Spitfire. “I’m impressed Rainbow. I’d give it a ten out of ten.” “No way! Awesome! Super awesome!” “Hey, you know what though? I think you should take a little break. I’ve had some tryouts where the ponies work themselves too hard during practice, and don’t do so well for the tryouts. I know that you are ready, so maybe a break is best?” Dash saluted her idol. “Of course! Right away!” Spitfire bro-hoofed Dash before saying her final goodbyes. Dash landed next to Fluttershy and thanked Spitfire numerous times before the Wonderbolt was out of sight. “Relax. Well, you know, I think I agree with her Dash. We should just relax for a little bit. Just take some time off.” Fluttershy meekly suggested. “Yeah, Spitfire has the right idea for sure! What do you wanna do ‘Shy?” Fluttershy paused for a brief second, sorting options through her head. “Well, we could go for a walk again? We really haven’t done much touring while we’ve been here.” Rainbow trotted forward. “You know, that does sound good. Lead the way pal.” “I’m not much of a leader,” Fluttershy frowned. “I got good news for you pal. It’s never too late to learn. Lead on!”
