Why her?

Fluttershy stared at the floor. It was a nice floor smooth and wooden, light in color though she was sure cement was under the whole thing. She saw patterns in the wood, from outlines of birds to angel bunny winking at her. This was all observed in an effort to calm her beating heart and anxious mind.

There were many things Fluttershy had worried about in the run up to Pinkie's Christmas party. From whether she'd remember the right time, to if she'd mixed the eggnog right. She even worried about small things like whether she should dress festively or go with colors she liked more. This situation was not one of her worries but now that it had happened she couldn't believe it never came to mind.

"Come on Fluttershy it's all in good fun!" Pinkie cheered only making the situation worse, though it was obviously not intentional.

'Right fun...' Fluttershy thought, Pinkie had done this out of fun not malice. Somehow this made her feel worse. Fluttershy glanced up visibly wincing at the plant that had caused her current emotional turmoil. It hung over the doorframe, a cluster of small dark green leaves, their pattern indiscernible, speckled with small white berries.

'Mistletoe' the idea was not often utilized in modern society, so it had never occurred to her that the plant would be at the party. If it had she was not sure she would have come. Being stuck under the mistletoe with someone else would have been bad enough. Pinkie was insisting on all friends participating so she wasn't going to get out of this door frame without kissing anyone. Pinkie wouldn't let her.

All this was bad enough, but none of this was the worst part, the other person under the mistletoe. This person was someone Fluttershy had liked for quite sometime but had never gotten the courage to confess to let alone kiss.

"Pinkie yer making her nervous. She shouldn't have ta kiss me if she doesn't want to!" The stubborn country twang made Fluttershy's heart pound quicker.

She secretively glanced at Applejack. Her straw blonde hair was held back by a festive red ribbon, her green eyes matched her tartan shirt, her muscular legs were clothed in light blue jeans. Upon her feet were a pair of red boots, best of all, a Santa red Stetson lined with white fluff sat a top her head. Rarity had complained about her going underdressed but Fluttershy didn't agree, for Applejack this was dressing up.

Fluttershy felt nervous about her own outfit. She had gone simple in a dark green Santa dress and matching boots. The fact that she wasn't so sure of her outfit was not helping her current state of mind.

The thing was Fluttershy really wanted to use the mistletoe as an excuse to kiss Applejack without revealing her affections she just couldn't convince herself to do it. After all what if Applejack didn't like the kiss? In her mind this was worse than if she didn't want to kiss her. If she let the opportunity pass by she'd never stop thinking about it.

"I finally got Pinkie ta let us move Flutter-"

In that moment Fluttershy did not think she did not worry; she just reacted. Her lips cut off Applejack's sentence. Fluttershy felt her friend stiffen in shock and relax almost as quickly. Her lips were as warm as Fluttershy had always Imagined. They were firm but not unyielding and soon she felt Applejack kiss back tentatively almost as though she was making sure it was okay. This felt like it went on for sometime but in actuality lasted about ten seconds.

Pulling away she saw Applejack had a glazed look in her eyes. Fluttershy began to apologize. " Sorry I should have made sure it was okay, I wasn't sure you wanted to kiss me, and it seems you didn't-"

Her rambling was cut off by a chuckle from Rarity. "What's so funny?" She said flustered.

"Fluttershy that look means she liked kissing you and is shocked it happened. I've seen that look on a number of boys. This is a good one though. You really did one over on her."

Fluttershy still wasn't sure but before she could worry more Applejack spoke. "That was amazing. I thought ya didn't want ta kiss me sugarcube?"

"Actually..."

"Oh for heavens sake this has gone on for months and I am sick of your obliviousness. Fluttershy Applejack likes you, Applejack Fluttershy likes you." Rarity said exasperated.

"Really you like me?" Fluttershy couldn't believe it. "But why didn't you say anything you're not the type of person to hide something like that."

Applejack looked at the ground sheepishly. "I uh don't think I knew until you kissed me.."

"Really! Applejack what did you think was going on?!" Rarity huffed.

"I thought I might be gettin sick..."

"I am done with you both!"

As Rarity walked away the two girls smiled at each other.

Epilogue

Pinkie smirked at Rainbow dash "I told you it would work."

Grumbling, Rainbow handed Pinkie a twenty dollar bill. "Seriously though you put mistletoe up just for them?"

"Nah I would have put it up anyway for fun. It's a holiday tradition that isn't done often enough if you ask me."

"Speaking of which Zephyr isn't here right?" Rainbow said looking around nervously as though she expected him to come out of the woodwork.

"No I didn't invite him."

"Thanks." Rainbow replied feeling relived.

"Oh don't thank me Dashie I have an ulterior motive." Pinkie said teasingly. She seemed proud of the big word she just used.

"What are you talking about?" She asked anxiously. When Pinkie got like this the smart thing to do was run. This wasn't an option.

Pinkie did not answer but her smile grew. At this point Rainbow would almost have preferred being stuck at the party with Zephyr...almost.

"After all." She began as they came to a stop. " If Zephyr was here I couldn't get you alone..."

"Okay Pinkie you're acting weird, weirder than normal I mean what's going on?"

Pinkie said nothing but pointed up grinning almost inhumanly wide. Rainbow looked up and froze.

Mistletoe.
