> Cherry Tune: A New Tune > by CherryTune > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- > Ch 01 Who We Are > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- At a Canterlot guard post, Sunny Side and Cherry Tune are discussing changes to the guard schedule as Cherry starts her shift. “I’m going where!?” Cherry asked. “I’m, sorry Cherry but the day shift lost both Bulldozer and Sunspot when we fought the horde. We need you to cover that position while we train more recruits.” Sunny Side said. “I... I understand.” Cherry replied. “Don’t worry a friend will be there with you, she’s been completing training since she got to Canterlot from Klugetown and will be your partner.” Sunny said. Cherry tilted her head waiting for Sunny to reveal who it was she meant. “It’s Sapphire Spark. She’s is a rather talented unicorn and will make a fine guard.” Sunny said. “Sapphire? Wants to be a guard?” Cherry asked. “I sure do!” Sapphire said walking in to the office. “Right on time Sapphire! Punctuality! A good quality for a guard!” Sunny said. “Cherry this will be your last night shift, you’ll have two work periods to switch to days.” Sunny continued. Sapphire continues to talk with Sunny and Cherry leaves to break the news to Moonlet and Nightfall. She arrived at the evening brief awaiting for the daily tasks. Moonlet arrives shortly after and sits next to Cherry. “Hi Cherry!” Moonlet said with a smile. “What’s wrong?” she asked. “I’ll tell you later ok?” Cherry responded. “Mmhmmm!” Moonlet said. Nightfall walked out to address the dozen or so guards in the auditorium. “Alright, we have some changes to the guard. The recent loss of two off our dear friends has put a lot of stress on us, but most notably their families.” Nightfall said. “We’ve adjusted the schedule and some of you will be moving to days to cover for those on days. Now you all have your tasks on your daily board. Review them and continue your duties.” He continued. Moonlet sat silently and gathering from what Nightfall said she asked, “You’re moving to days aren’t you?” “Mhmm.” Cherry replied. “That sucks.” Moonlet said. Cherry and Moonlet review their tasks and go on patrol. They mostly stay quite checking their route and following procedures. Cherry and Moonlet get to the fountain a little late and Luna was already there. “Oh dear. Is something wrong my friends?” Luna asked. The two looked at each other and began venting at the same time. Luna sat back at the barrage of words and said “Please ladies one at a time!” The two settle down and both sigh. “Cherry is being moved to day shift to fill in for …..” “For Bulldozer and Sunspot. Yes.” Luna said. “I have reviewed some comments from the captains saying that the guard have concerns.” She continued. “But I am staying on nights…” Moonlet said. “Yes, you two are the most experienced and will train the new recruits. But one of you had to be moved to days to train those on days.” Luna said. “I left the decisions to the captain's to best mold our guard and they have done what is best and most efficient.” She continued. Luna looked over at Cherry’s and Moonlet’s sad faces. “I know it will be tough for you two. I much rather have you two here with me but I can’t undermine my captains.” “But you’re a princess.” Moonlet said. “Moonlet, it would be wrong for me to keep both of you here for my own personal reasons.” Luna said. “As much as I wanted to tell them to keep you two together, I know that the two of you will shape the future guard for the better with this arrangement.” She continued. “Will we ever be able to come back together?” Moonlet asked. “Eventually Moonlet.” Luna replied, “But I cannot predict how soon or far these changes will need to be in place. Despite the six spirits being sent to their tomb, since their escape, guard enlistment has been down, not to mention Reapers influence.” She continued. “Yeah, I have seen a lot less in our ranks as of late. It doesn’t help we sent our reserves to the watch over the ancient burial grounds.” Cherry Tune said. “Indeed Cherry, preparations are already underway to remedy our shortages and if you two can train your new company we’ll have plenty more options to maneuver. But enough of these talks, our break is almost over and we haven’t so much as looked at Moonlet’s dish!” Luna said. “Yeah! And I haven’t foaled up a tune on my banjo yet either!” Cherry Tune chimed in. Moonlet smiled and reached in her basket and pulled out a covered plate. “I made little pony smiley sandwiches!” She said. “Hopefully they’ll last us through our other breaks!” Luna looked over the faces and said “These are adorable Moonlet! Reminds of Celestia’s pancakes she makes me in the morning!” The night went well from then on with Luna returning for their subsequent breaks. Morning was well on its way and while Luna departed to her chambers, Cherry Tune and Moonlet gave their pass down to the day crew. Cherry said her goodbyes to Moonlet and they parted ways. The next night Nightfall had filled in for Cherry. Moonlet and Nightfall patrolled their route and it went by as normal. Moonlet was still upset but Nightfall was doing well to cheer her up and make her smile. They continued to their breaks with Luna and Nightfall brought some ciders from his shop for the sandwiches. This was his contribution in place of Cherry’s banjo. A few days go by and Sapphire Spark is scheduled to work the day shift. Cherry is supposed to work this day as well to show Sapphire the ropes. She would follow her route as usual but just during the day and she’d teach Sapphire how the routine is performed. Sapphire grows bored with the dull duty of walking the perimeter. “Ugh, is this all we do? You guys were doing way cooler things back in Klugetown, hunting Reaper and fighting dragon zombies. I thought this would be more exciting.” Sapphire said. “Nah this is pretty much it, those missions are super rare especially with Twilight and her friends being the “go to” heroes.” Cherry said. “Well what about the spirits, the whole kingdom of Equestria fought them?” Sapphire asked. “Yeah I guess a lot of the guard were there. But that sort of thing does not happen all that often and most of the time it’s up to Twilight to defeat the baddies.” Cherry replied. “So what do you do for fun around here?” Sapphire asked. “I normally throw small parties for close friends and we all crash at my place.” Cherry responded. “And how do you get through the day at work! It’s sooooo boring.” Sapphire said. “Well Moonlet and I usually keep each other entertained but sometimes we would pull pranks for the day shift.” Cherry replied. “Pranks huh? Not usually my thing, but go on.” Sapphire said. “Nothing elaborate, just buckets above doors or charcoal on the rims of helmets.” Cherry said. “Pssh lame, Hey I have an idea!” Sapphire said. “I’m listening.” Cherry said. Cherry and Sapphire set up an elaborate scavenger hunt. They take all of Sunny’s armor and hide it all over the castle with a single note on her desk to start it off. Sunny arrives to her office and sees that her armor is missing and checks the note. “…… someone’s in trouble.” Sunny Side growls. Sunny finds the six pieces of armor throughout the castle, on, in, and around various objects and rooms. Her helmet was on a statue in the courtyard, her chest plate was in a bucket of water placed in the freezer of the castle kitchen, and her hooflets were on chair legs spread through several rooms. She gathers her armor and immediately calls Cherry and Sapphire into her office. “Cherry someone has gone a little too far with this elaborate scavenger hunt.” Sunny said. Cherry Tune and Sapphire Spark stand at attention and become uneasy. “You are one of the best investigators Cherry. Find out who did this and report to me as soon as you discover the culprits. Sapphire take note because you’re training to be an investigator too.” Sunny continued. Cherry and Spark let out a light sigh of relief. “Yes ma’am! I won’t let you down.” Cherry said. Cherry and Sapphire calmly leave the office and when they are far enough away, they trot off giggling. > Ch 02 Sunny Promenade, Rainbow Sugar Pie > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sugar Cloud wanders through Ponyville looking for Sugar Cube Corner. She finds the store front and walks in. “Hello Stranger! You’re new to Ponyville aren’t you?” Pinkie says. “I am! But I have heard about Sugar Cube Corner when I was in Klugetown and I thought I could get a job since me and my sister moved here a few weeks ago!” Sugar said. “Klugetown! I know that place! I even brought a friend back from there!” Pinkie said with a smile while holding up a bird skull. Pinkie Pie pondered for a moment. “Hmm I don’t know… I guess the Cakes are pretty busy with the foals growing up so fast, and I could use help with the increasing number of orders……” She asks “What’s your name friend? I am Pinkie Pie!” “My name is Sugar Cloud” Sugar replied. “What! No way! A Sugar Cloud working at Sugar Cube Corner!” Pinkie gasped. “No Pinkie! You remember when you hired Marble Cake to work here without so much as an interview…. So many ponies so many broken teeth…” She said to herself. “Tell you what! Show me what you got and I’ll ask the Cakes if they would like another baker!” Pinkie continued. “Okay, what would you like me to do?” Sugar asked. “You can start by bakiiiiiiiing, this!” Pinkie said while pulling out a fancy cake cookbook and pointing to the page of a strawberry tall cake with raspberry filling, lemon zest, and chocolate truffle toppings. “Oh… my.” Sugar said. “I don’t know if I can do that, but I can make cookies and confections!” she continued. “Hmm.” Pinkie said rubbing her chin eyeing Sugar Cloud up and down. “Very well, how about a simple chocolate chip cookie?” Pinkie continued. “Oh certainly!” Sugar says. “Great! Let’s go!” Pinkie says. Pinkie walks towards the kitchen while Sugar Cloud walks towards the front door. “Uh, where ya going?” Pinkie asked. “Oh, I need to be outside to show you.” Sugar says. “Oooookay?” Pinkie says while raising an eyebrow. They step outside and Sugar looks toward the sky. “I need a cloud and there doesn’t seem to be any.” Sugar says. “Yeah, it’s supposed to clear skies for a couple a days! More time to play in the Sun!” Pinkie replied suddenly wearing sunglasses and sipping a milkshake with a little umbrella, while lying in hammock seemingly attached to nothing. Her bird friend lying next to her also wearing glasses. “Oh my, I am afraid I can’t make the cookies without a cloud.” Sugar said. “No cookies without clouds?” Pinkie exclaims while her glasses pop off, she falls off the hammock, and she drops her milkshake. ”Not on my watch!” Pinkie said zipping off in a pink blur. Sugar Cloud stands in confusion before Pinkie quickly returns, snapping in front of her shortly followed by Rainbow Dash who held a small cloud.“ “Heard you needed a cloud. Here’s one fresh from Cloudsdale!” Rainbow Dash said. “Oh thank you! The cleaner the better!” Sugar said. “It was really hard finding good clean clouds in Klugetown” she added. “Why in Equestria do you need a cloud to make cookies though?” Rainbow Dash asked. “Is it to make the cookies extra fluffy!?” Pinkie asked excitedly. “Not quite, but I might have to try that at some point!” Sugar replied. “Alright stand back, and I’ll show you what I can do!” She continued. Sugar concentrated and her horn began to glow. She shot a white and golden beam at the small cloud and it turned into fluffy chocolate chip cookie shaped cloud. “Wow!” Pinkie said. “That’s not the best part! Would you mind grabbing a plate and holding it under the cloud? And could you….Miss?“ Sugar said. “Oh no Miss! Just Rainbow Dash!” Rainbow Dash replied. “Rainbow Dash! Could you give it a light tap?” Sugar asked. Pinkie ran inside and grabbed a plate and held it under the cloud and Rainbow gave it a slight kick. The cloud started raining perfect chocolate chip cookies. “This! Is! Amazing!” Pinkie said ecstatically. "Yeah that's pretty cool!" Rainbow Dash added. "Thank You! The idea came to me in a dream, and when I tried it, that's when I got my cutie mark!" Sugar Cloud explained. “Well I gotta go you guys, take care Pinkie!” Rainbow Dash said. “Bye Dashie! See you at the show!” Pinkie replied. Pinkie and Sugar moved the cloud and cookies inside. “I wonder if you could do cupcakes!” Pinkie asked as she closed the door behind them. Meanwhile, Promenade tends to the Barn and Stable while Sunny is at work, and Meryl, Sunny’s sister, is headed back from school. When Meryl arrives Promenade helps her with her homework then Meryl goes outside to play. Promenade continues to watch the shop and prepares dinner for the two sisters. Sunny comes back from work and sees that Promenade has again made food for them. “Promenade thank you again for making dinner. You know you don’t have to do this.” Sunny said. “It’s my pleasure Sunny, seeing you and your sister light up is every bit as worth it!” Promenade said. “Well you are going to have to let me do something for you one of these days! Your meals are all so wonderful!” Sunny said. “Oh no, you do so much for me already. Even if you don’t think you do.” Promenade said while smiling. “Well okay, but I’m still gunna! Where’s Meryl?” Sunny replied. “She’s on her way, she won’t be long now.” Promenade said. Not but a moment later Meryl returns from outside and they all sit down and enjoy the meal that Promenade prepared. As they finish up Sunny Side says “Promenade we really do appreciate all that you do. Let Meryl and I clean up this time.” “Yeah,  since you been here I haven’t done a single chore!” Meryl said. “I never thought I’d miss washing dishes.” she added. “Oh no that’s quite alright. It’ll be done in a shake of your tail.” Promenade said. “No Ma’am, you got a show to get to and Meryl is right. I’m starting to miss some of the quality time the chores brought Meryl and I.” Sunny said. “ Besides you don’t want to be late!” She continued. Promenade paused, smiled, and obliged saying “Ok you two,  you win this round! And I do have chores to do at my Canterlot place I need to do anyway. It’ll probably take me most of the evening so I’ll just stay there tonight.” “Sure thing sweetie, don’t work too hard and have a good show!” Sunny said. Promenade said her farewells and headed for canterlot. She arrived at the Canterlot Theatre just in time and performed her parts flawlessly. “Hey Sunny.” Meryl said. “Yes Meryl?” Sunny Side responded. “Why does miss Promenade stay at her Canterlot place some nights, doesn’t she like living here?” Meryl asked. Sunny Side pondered the question for a moment. “I’m not sure. I’d guess either her performances go pretty late or she takes care of other business while she’s in Canterlot like her chores she mentioned.” “Can we go see her dance one day?” Meryl asked. “I wanna see a real ballet! The dancers in the books you bring are so pretty in there outfits and I would really really really like to see a show in real life!” She continued. “You know, that does sound like a fun idea. We haven’t done much in the way of fun since….” Sunny pause for a moment and looked away. She quickly continued ”Since we had to fend for ourselves for so long.” Sunny said. “I’ll ask Promenade when her next performance is and see if we can get tickets early!” she continued. “That would be awesome!” Meryl said ecstatically. Sunny smiled and said “Ok, don’t get too excited. Finish drying those dishes then off to bed with you.” “Yes ma’am!” Meryl replied. Meryl dries the last of the plates and heads off to bed while Sunny looks through her books to tally up her profits for the month. “Wow, Promenade keeps really good notes and really takes care of the guests.” Sunny said to herself. She,looks in more detail and sees that not only has Promenade been able to bring in more customers, but any tips Promenade made she’d put them in Sunny’s savings. “How long have you been doing this?” Sunny asked to herself. > CH 03 Cherry Spark, Moon-fall > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- After the recruits start to flow in and are trained for patrols the shifts go under one more change allowing weekends for the guard. Cherry and Sapphire still work days on the first half of the week while Moonlet and Nightfall worked nights for the first half of the week as well. While the back half of the week is patrolled by the new guard. During shift change Cherry tells Moonlet what pranks she and Sapphire have been getting into and Moonlet acts distracted and says, “That’s really cool CT, shift is getting real busy so I better go.” Moonlet then trots off. “Whoa, what was that all about?” Cherry asked. Sapphire Spark walks over to Cherry adjust her mechanical wings “What was what all about?” she asked Cherry Tune. “Nothing, let’s go.” Cherry said softly. During the next couple of weeks during shift changes Moonlet spends less and less time talking with Cherry Tune. Moonlet also made excuses during the weekend to avoid talking with Cherry saying “It’s these long nights, I just get so tired and want to sleep during my time off.” Cherry would often understand and wouldn’t really press the issue any further. One day Cherry begins to open up to Sapphire and tells her about how distant Moonlet has been. Sapphire says she should try to surprise her with a gift or a scavenger hunt one night during her shift. Cherry likes the idea and makes plans for a special scavenger hunt around the castle. Sunny SIde lets Cherry finish her shift change early and heads out to gather the supplies. Moonlet arrives to relieve Cherry but Sunny had let her off just a few minutes ago. Moonlet takes the news a little poorly even though she had been avoiding her and shuffles off. Nightfall shows up moments later. “Good morning Moonlet! Or good evening in our case.” he said. Moonlet just scowled. “Are you okay?” Nightfall asked. “I’m fine!” Moonlet snapped. “Soooooo not so good.” Nightfall replied. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to snap.” Moonlet said. “You’re alright, what’s on your mind?” Nightfall asked. “…… can we wait until our patrol?” Moonlet replied. “Of course.” Nightfall said. They get the daily reports and patrol plans and head out. Moonlet remains quiet for a few minutes as they walk along the wall overlooking expanse of green towards Ponyville. Moonlet had been walking ahead of NIghtfall during the patrol when he asks “So how are you? What was that back there?” “It’s….Cherry… She seems to be really happy...” she sneered. “with her new “friend” Sapphire Spark.” Moonlet said. “That’s pretty good news! I knew the changes would be stressful for someponies. Glad she is finding it easy to get along with Sapphire!” Nightfall said with a slight smirk. Moonlet whipped her head around and stared at Nightfall with eyes that could kill. “Thanks.” She said with contempt. “You feel like she’s forgotten you and moved on because she’s been having fun with Sapphire much like you and her did.” Nightfall said. “I’ve noticed y’all during shift change. I am guessing you are upset that she was gone when you arrived for work today.” He continued. “If you knew why’d you ask!” Moonlet asked. “Dunno, maybe I was hoping you’d open up yourself.” Nightfall said then quickly darting his eyes away. Moonlet and Nightfall stood in silence for a moment. “What am I going to do…..” Moonlet asked. “Talk to her.” Nightfall said. “I know she’s sharing with you all the fun things she’s been doing but it’s not to rub it in your face, I am sure.” He continued. “I know! I mean… I don’t know…” Moonlet says before letting out a sigh. “Look it’s our last night this week and Cherry’s too, maybe y’all can hang out during the weekend and talk things out.” Nightfall said. “I don’t know. Maybe I’ll just let it go.” Moonlet said. Moonlet and Nightfall arrive at the fountain and Luna flies in behind them. They discuss Moonlets dilemma and Luna suggest much the same thing as Nightfall. Moonlet says she’ll consider it over the weekend and reiterated that she might just ignore it and move on. The morning crew arrives as the night ends and Moonlet and Nightfall head into their weekend. Moonlet asks Nightfall to show her his storefront between Canterlot and the Crystal Empire. He agrees saying, “You are always welcome to join me while I tend to my shop and check out how busy it’s been since the six spirits!” “Oh thank you! I’ve always wanted to check out how the outpost has come along. I’ve heard it’s developing into quite a respectable town.” Moonlet said. “Indeed, it has been a remarkable place of training for all creatures for the defense of Equestria and the school house is currently getting its accreditation as a university.” Nightfall added knowing full well that Moonlet is hiding something but he didn’t pry. The two hop on the train and head out to Nightfall’s shop at Midway station. Over the three days of the weekend Nightfall shows Moonlet the shop, the guard posts, and the schoolhouse. Moonlet takes note that the school house will train new guard captains in addition as hold joint training for other nations. The site had gained some some renown with leaders from all over the lands and envoys of diplomats arrived on a regular bases to tour and learn about Equestria. Moonlet takes a special interest in the guard captain schooling but doesn’t bring it up to Nightfall. By the third evening Moonlet and Nightfall head back to Canterlot to begin there work week. When they arrive Nightfall asks Moonlet if she’s going to talk it out with Cherry Tune but before she gave an answer Cherry Tune and Sapphire Spark were heading over to give their nightly report. Nightfall nudges Moonlet and points over to Cherry who was taking off her armor. Moonlet sighs, “Do I have to?” “Yes you do …” Nightfall says. “Ugh, fine…” Moonlet says hanging her head low while walking over to Cherry. “Um Cherry.” She said. “Moonlet! I was just coming to find you! I wanted to talk to you about something!” Cherry Tune said excitedly. “Oh? Me too actually.” Moonlet said. “Uh oh… is this about Sapphire and I having fun together? I haven’t forgotten about you Moonlet!” Cherry said. Moonlet whipped over at Nightfall with a scowl and he just shrugged as he hadn’t said anything to anypony. She looked back over at Cherry and asked “How’d you know?” “You’re my very best friend. And I know you like the back of my wings!” Cherry said. “Cherry, you can’t see the back of your wings.” Moonlet said in a lighthearted manner. “I know, but just because I can’t see it doesn’t mean I don’t know it’s there and it needs to brushed and cleaned and taken care of!” Cherry said. “But if you knew why didn’t you brush… I mean why didn’t you say anything?” Moonlet asked. “Because I knew you needed time to think things through, and to be honest I wasn’t really thinking about how my stories about how Sapphire and I might affect you. I just wanted to share our experiences with you.” Cherry said. “But! I do know a way to share not just the stories but the activities as well!” she continued. Moonlet looked on. “It was mostly Sapphires idea cause she knows how much you mean to me. Here take this note and don’t read it until check point one!” Cherry said. “It’s a scavenger hunt for you! Oh and Nightfall too I suppose.” She continued while glancing over at Nightfall. He slumped and leered at Cherry and she poked her tongue out and winked. Moonlet and Cherry part ways for the night on a much happier tone then the previous weeks. Moonlet grabs Nightfalls hoof and says “Come on! Let’s go find out what she hid!” She gets to check point one and opens the letter it says “through a looking glass you’ll see an arrow. Closer than the arrow is but in the direction it points is your next clue”. Nightfall hands Moonlet a telescope and she looks out to find an arrow marked out on the side of the mountain. She follows to the left and sees another arrow on a tower pointing down to a door in-between checkpoint one and two. They go through the night following clue after clue and during their break they invite Luna to find the next one. Cherry knew Luna would be present for the break and added something only Luna might figure out. The next couple of days went much the same but now Luna, Nightfall, and Moonlet were setting up their own scavenger hunts and pranks for Sapphire and Cherry. Some nights Luna was too busy to make the breaks. During those moments Moonlet and Nightfall began to grow closer sharing more intimate details about each other. Because of this they both grew to like each other in ways that surprised each of them. Moonlet never mentioned it to Nightfall, Cherry, or anyone else, nor did Nightfall mention it to Moonlet. As Nightfall was captain of the guard and Moonlet a guard pony, such relationships were not acceptable. Even their friendship was skirting the edge of what was accepted. They still had fun on shift but they both kept to themselves on personal levels as best they could. > Ch 04 Barrenness > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- “Good evening Sunny, welcome back!” Promenade says as Sunny walks in through the front door of the Barn and Stable. “Good evening Promenade! You are always so cheerful!” Sunny said. “You make it easy with your, “Sunny” personality!” Promenade replied with a giggle. “Oh dear, as if I haven’t heard that one before.” Sunny said with a smile. “I imagine Meryl is with the cutie mark crusaders?” Sunny asked. “Mhmm. She should be heading in with them now.” Promenade said. Just then Meryl and the Cutie mark Crusaders barge in. “Hi Miss Promenade!” They all say. “Hi girls!” Promenade replies. “You three are headed home now, right?” “Yes ma’am!” Applebloom said. “In that case I have something for you all.” Promenade responds. She gives them each a small sweet and sends them on their way. “Thanks again miss Promenade!” Sweetie Bell said. “Yeah you’re the best!” Scootaloo added.”Second only to Rainbow Dash.” she continued at a lower volume so Promenade couldn’t hear. Promenad of course heard the comment, gave only a smirk, but graciously accepted second place. “Oh thank you girls, have a good evening!” Promenade said gently. “Bye Meryl! We’ll try to find your cutie mark again tomorrow!” Scootaloo says. “Sure thing! Bye guys.” Meryl replied. “Well Sunny, I prepared yours and Meryl’s dinner but I have an early show time at Canterlot theatre so I must head out.” Promenade said. “Well that’s a shame, did you at least have something to eat?” Sunny asked. “I ate before you arrived. It might be a late show as well, it’s back to back performances, so I may stay at my Canterlot place. Please don’t feel the need to stay up for me.” Promenade said “Alright sweetie, have a good show!” Sunny said “Thank you Sunny! Bye Meryl!” Promenade replied waving at Meryl. Promenade heads out for Canterlot taking the train. She arrives at the theatre and greats Lyra, Octavia, and Vinyl Scratch. “Hi ladies, are you ready for tonight’s show?” Promenade asked. “Oh hello Promenade, I certainly am prepared, it’s been awhile since I performed for a ballet AND a play!” Octavia said. “Yeah after the dark spirits were banished, creatures just stopped showing up to live performances.” Lyra chimed in. Vinyl jumped in saying, “But thanks to the night life being largely unaffected I managed to plug some adverts for Octavia’s and Lyra’s concerts”. She continued “Now creatures from all over want to see not just the orchestra but dances, plays, and other productions like yours Promenade”. “Yes it does feel good to start performing again. Especially as we have this boom in attendance.” Promenade said. “Well, I have to head backstage to get ready, see you three out there!” “Of course dear! I can’t wait to see your performance!” Octavia said. “Me too!” Lyra agreed cheerfully. Promenade heads backstage and Octavia stared a little too long as the purple mare walks away. Octavia turned around to see Vinyl Scratch leering at her over her glasses with an eyebrow raised. “What Vinyl?” Octavia asked. Vinyl just looked on. “She’s a great dancer, that’s all!” Octavia defended. Lyra rolled her eyes and smiled. Promenade was backstage waiting for her cue in her dance parts of the play and then waited for the ballet. The music started and the other dancers came out and did their parts. The whole troupe performed for a popular play called “Flame Princess” while Promenade had two performances within the routine, one called “Sun of the Night” and the other “Fire of Daydream”. Together she only danced for no more than ten minutes in the play. She stayed and watched the rest of the show from the back of the stage before performing her part in the ballet. The night had been a remarkable success and while the creatures departed the theatre the managers of the shows handed out the dancers and musicians pay. Promenade collected her bits and headed out stopping by Lyra, Octavia, and Vinyl first. “Hey Prom, nice moves out there!” Vinyl said. “Oh thank you Vinyl, your accompaniment along with the orchestra really brought a new energy to the music!” Promenade said. “Her “wubs” certainly have a way with hyping the crowds” Octavia said rolling her eyes. “Hey! We’re about to go to “Lights and Sound” where VInyl is going to play some of her new stuff. Wanna join us?” Lyra asked. “Hmm maybe next time, two performances really took it out of me.” Promenade said. Vinyl smiled and said, “Fair enough, with those moves I’m surprised you’re still standing. Catch ya later Prom.” “See you later ladies!” Promenade said trotting off.” Octavia frowned at VInyl saying, “Really, “Prom”?” “What, she’s just a really good dancer.” Vinyl said poking her tongue out. “Let’s go you two! You both owe me a drink, each!” Lyra said pulling them towards the “Lights and Sound” night club. Promenade stopped by a local library which was just closing shop and bought a few books. She then headed to a toy store and purchased a few stuffed animals. After her purchases she headed to an orphanage and began to hand out the books and toys. She told stories and sung lullabies for the younger foals before bed. The staff and children all greeted her as if she was “mom pony”  and when she visited after every show, the eyes of the children would light up. There were thirty five foals in the orphanage, a number that grew from seven since the aggression from the six spirits. Promenade knew each one by name as well as the six staff that did their best to accommodate almost triple the amount of youngins they were meant to handle. But with Promenades help they managed to supply to orphanage with school supplies, beds, sheets, blankets, everything the foals needed. She also used her connections with the dance troupe to get volunteers every so often. The sun had been set for a while and Promenade was exhausted. She headed to her home in Canterlot instead of her complementary lodging in the Barn and Stable. She placed a bag containing the remaining toys and books to the side, closed the door behind her, and her back legs collapsed to the floor as she broke down in tears. > Ch 05 The Sunnier Side > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sunny wakes up to tend to the departing guests. She had a few hours before her guard duties started at which time Promenade would arrive to tend the counter. She took this time to make Meryl breakfast and see her off to school. She’d also take the time to go over some ledgers and room availability. Promenade arrived at the Barn and Stable and came through the doors with a gentle smile. “Good morning Sunny” She said softly.” “Good morning Promenade! You’re a little early.” Sunny replied. “Yeah I came into Ponyville to place an order of cupcakes with the Cakes.” Promenade said. “Oh yeah, what’s the occasion?” Sunny asked. “I am taking them to the orphanage after my show in a couple days for hearts and hooves day.” Promenade said. “Promenade you truly are the sweetest mare I know! And I’ve read FlutterShy’s part in Twilight’s journal!” Sunny said. Promenade blushed and said, “Oh no, I am sure Fluttershy is way nicer than me. She’s great with animals and I hear she has a beautiful singing voice on top of her softly spoken manner!” “Well I don’t know about that, you’re just as soft spoken most days, AND looking out for those children is quite something! You are truly a special mare!” Sunny said. “You’re too kind Sunny!” Promenade “If you’d like to head in early I can manage here.” “That would be great! I actually do have to head in early for some… disciplinary actions.” Sunny said with a side eye and a smirk. “I’ve updated the ledge as far as two moons ago if you could go over it while I am gone that’d be super helpful!” she continued. “Sure thing Sunny! A little mental exercise in the morning helps me clear the mind!” Promenade says. “See, always so kind. I really do appreciate all the hard work you do around here. Are you sure I can’t do more for you?” Sunny asked. “You do more than enough for me Sunny. You really do.” Promenade replied with a solemn smile. “Well okay, but if you need anything from me don’t ever hesitate to ask.” Sunny said with a wink and a grin. “Okay, I am off to work. See you for dinner!” she continued. “Cherry, Sapphire, you’re both gunna get it.” Sunny whispered as she trotted off. Sunny arrives in Canterlot by train and heads to her office. Cherry and Sapphire were already there standing at attention. “Oh so you know why I called you here.” Sunny said slowly walking around to the front of the office staring the two mares down. “Yes ma’am.” Cherry said. “It was my idea, I am the senior guardsman I take full responsibility Sapphire didn’t--“ “Quiet!” Sunny snapped gently slamming her hoof on the desk. “So, from my lost armor, to include a fully frozen solid chestplate, and the rest of the pranks you’ve been doing, this was done just by you? No, Sapphire you are just as responsible for these actions.” She continued. “Yes, ma’am and I take responsibility for what I have done, regardless of seniority.” Sapphire said. “That’s another good quality Sapphire. And Cherry, looking out for those under you, pretty good quality too. Despite having put her in this situation to begin with.” Sunny said. Cherry slightly lowered her gaze. “Keep up the good work.” Sunny continued. Cherry and Sapphire glance at each other confused. “Ma’am?” Cherry said. “Well I have been getting reports from all over the castle guard that these pranks are not only boosting morale but are improving guard awareness.” Sunny said “We’ve had half as many castle breaches from fanatical ponies trying to snap pics of Celestia eating cake. Just by the nature of having to pay attention to details in the scavenger hunts guards are catching would be trespassers before they get into the castle . Additionally the gifts at the end of the scavenger hunts have been improving community relations!” She continued. “Really!” Cherry and Sapphire respond with confused shock. “Yup, so long as you two keep these…. innovative training regiments safe and don’t get too carried away, I don’t see why you can’t continue with your operations!” Sunny said. “But I will caution from pranking Celestia again. Rigging her cake to explode all over her was a little….. bold.” She continued. Cherry and Sapphire look at each other in confusion again and then back to Sunny. “Aye captain!” They said. “Alright dismissed girls! Oh and before I forget, you two coming to Promenade’s birthday in a few days right?” Sunny said. “Of course Sunny! We wouldn’t miss it!” Cherry said. Cherry and Sapphire run off to continue their patrol and to plot their next “training exercise”. Sunny smiles and continues to work on her paperwork. The day flies by and Sunny dismisses her day guard, passing the torch to Moonlet and Nightfall before heading back to Ponyville. She greets Promenade who had already prepared dinner for Sunny and Meryl again. “Will you be joining us this evening Promenade?” Sunny asked. “If it’s alright with you, I am available this evening.” Promenade replied. “Wonderful! It’s always good having you around. Come now, you’re like family now!” Sunny paused for a quick moment with a sad look on her face, as did Promenade. Neither seemed to notice one another’s reaction. “Well it smells wonderful. I cannot wait to try what you’ve made this time Promenade!” Meryl said cheerfully breaking the split second silence. “Oh my yes. It’s quite possibly the best thing I’ve made by far!” Promenade said with a calmer cheer. “It’s honey glazed grilled artichoke hearts and grilled carrots with a herb and butter drizzle!” Promenade continued. “That sounds amazing!” Sunny replied. Sunny, Meryl, and Promenade talk over the meal and finish with a small desert. After the meal they all help clean up and play a few games with Meryl before bed. Sunny and Meryl went to their respective rooms while Promenade cleared the living area while the sisters prepare for bed. Sunny woke up late that evening to the sounds of someone crying. She looks outside her window and sees Promenade on the tree swing in tears. She heads outside to the garden where the swing overlooked the stream running through Ponyville. The water glistened in the moonlight as Sunny walked over to Promenade and asked “Hey Promenade, are you ok what’s wrong?” With tears in her eyes, Promenade quickly hid an object under her wing and said, “I’m sorry Sunny, I didn’t mean to wake you up. That’s why I came out here.” Sunny saw exactly what Promenade hid away but chose to ignore it for now. She sat down next to Promenade on the swing and said, “Promenade, whatever it is that you are going through you don’t ever have to apologize for it. I am here for you if you need to talk.” Promenade wipes the tears away and says “Thank you Sunny, I should be fine. It’s not the first time this has happened.” “Hey, I know this may be hard to hear but things will be better. I’ve… had experience with something like this before… but I didn’t act soon enough and I lost someone dear to me. I might not know how to help you, but I know who can. Maybe we can see them tomorrow?” Sunny said. “I do appreciate it but I’ve been through much worse. You two here make it easier though.” Promenade replied. “Well ok sweetie. What if I just stayed here with you until you hand over what’s under your wing.” Sunny said while placing her hoof around Promenade and pulling her close. “I’d like that Sunny.” Promenade said softly. The two mares held onto each other on the swing until the early hours of the morning. Time passed for what seemed like hours and mere seconds, and after a while Promenade handed Sunny what she hid under her wing. > Ch 06 Nightfallin' Apart > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- The next day at the end of her shift Sunny gives Nightfall the daily brief and informs him that after he has completed the training with the new night and day liaisons they will be ready to start command of their shifts immediately. “Hey, Thanks again for coming in early. I had a late night caring for a friend.”  Sunny Side said. “Hey no problem at all, taking care of each other is what we’re all about.” Nightfall replied. “ Anything I can do to help you and your friend?” Nightfall continued. “We’ll see, I think I can manage but I’ll let you know if it gets too bad.” Sunny said. Nightfall nodded and said, “Very well. Just let me know okay? Now get some rest and take care of your friend.” “Mhmm thanks again Night.” Sunny responded. Nightfall relieves Sunny from her duties for the day and heads to the briefing room to talk with the new captains. The captains were also there early and Nightfall explains, “Right! So Water Lilly, after our training you’ll be good to take over back half days while Sunny will remain on front half days. Full Throttle, you will take my place on this shift and I’ll cover back half nights. Got it?” “Yes sir!” Water Lily and Full Throttle say. “Great let’s get started!” Nightfall said. Nightfall takes the better part of the extra time and instructs them on how to schedule the crews, how to coordinate with each shift, and how to report major incidents to the right commanders. He dismisses Water Lily for the day and instructs Full Throttle that he is now in charge of the night shift. Full Throttle salutes and says “Yes sir!”. Nightfall responds “Aye cut it out!” returning the salute. He then proceeds to find Moonlet. Nightfall arrives at the gardens to find Moonlet sitting by the fountain. As he walks over she turns her head and smiles through her mane at him. The two begin to prepare the usual picnic for their break while Luna arrives just in time to discusses the recent prank Cherry and Sapphire set up. Luna also mentioned that after an exploding cake incident, Celestia had hinted at participating in the next shenanigans. After a while, Luna had to return to the dream world while Nightfall and Moonlet continued their patrol and discussed the new schedules. “So that means you and Cherry will have time during the weekends to hang out more! Plus Sunny will have more time to spend with her sister!” Nightfall said. “Oh wow! I can’t believe you and Sunny got them to change the guard so quickly!” Moonlet said. “To be perfectly honest this was mostly Celestia’s doing. She definitely took notice of working seven days a week and how badly it affected the guard.” Nightfall said. “That’s pretty cool! Now all of us can go to Promenade’s birthday gig!” Moonlet said. “Well…” Nightfall stalls “What?” Moonlet asks. “I won’t be working on this shift anymore. We need the more experienced captains on both ends of the week and the front half works well for Sunny so I took the back half. Which means I’ll be working during Promenade’s party.” Nightfall explains. Moonlet’s mood shifted quickly “… really? That’s all you got?” Moonlet snaps. “You couldn’t find any other captain to do that? No one from the field guard? Or take leave?” She argued. “It’s not just that there aren’t captains to fill the position, it’s…. also for other reasons. It’s better this way.” Nightfall said. “And I can’t take leave on such short notice AND with new captains.” he continued. “Ugh, better for who?” Moonlet scoffed before stomping off to continue her patrol by herself. Nightfall contemplates going after her but decides to return to Full Throttle. “Your new guard should be coming in tomorrow. Her name is Moon Pie and she’ll be working with Moonlet.” Nightfall said. Full Throttle jumped. “Oh! Sir you startled me, I thought you were gone already.” He said. “No still here, had to take…. Work something out before leaving.” Nightfall replied. “Well, if you don’t need anything from me I’ll be heading out for real this time. Remember, Moon Pie comes in tomorrow make sure she’s good to go.” he continued. “Aye sir, I’ll fill her in with the details.” Full Throttle responded. “Knock it off with the sir business, we're both captains.” Nightfall chuckled. “If you need anything else from me just pass it through the day liaisons and I will be able to address it at the start of my shift. Have a goodnight” Nightfall continued. “Will do s-- Nightfall.” Full Throttle said. Nightfall heads home and leaves the new captain in charge. Moonlet had been continuing her patrol on her own. She had been lost in thought and forgets about her next break. Luna arrives at the fountain and for a moment looks around. She flies up in the air to search for Moonlet and Nightfall. She spots Moonlet walking the wall and flies over. Luna gently drops down next to Moonlet who was oblivious to her arrival. “Moonlet is everything alright?” Luna asked. “Oh! Luna, I didn’t notice you there…..” Moonlet said. Luna looked on with concern. “Oh our lunch! I’m so sorry! I… I wasn’t paying attention.” Moonlet said. “Does it have to do with Nightfall?” Luna continued. “What? No, why would I care what he’s doing, not like we’ve been through a lot together and thought we’d… Well he’s working a different shift now doesn’t matter.” Moonlet said. Luna just looked at her and raised an eyebrow. “Yeah… it’s Nightfall. How’d you know?” Moonlet said. “Well he’s not here Moonlet.” Luna said. “Oh… right…” Moonlet replied. “What was all that other stuff about?” Luna asked. “Nothing…” Moonlet replied. “Why would he change shifts?” She continued. “He did what he thought best for the two of you, did he not?” Luna asked. “How can being unable to see each other be the best for us…” Moonlet responded. “And what do you mean the two of us?” She continued. “I’ve seen the way you two look at each other, not to mention your conversations after I leave.” Luna said. “It might be obvious to me because I see you two all the time but if his commander, your commander, found out they would have separated you two long ago anyway. Or have you forgotten the code of guard?” Luna continued. “No… I haven’t” Moonlet said lowering her head. "Why didn't you separate us?" she asked. "Because I have seen this many times over the years. And more often than not the union was far greater for the realm then separation." Luna replied. Moonlet sighed. “I know it’s difficult, I have seen this many times before.” Luna said. “But if you become captain then it’s less of an issue.” She continued. “I don’t know if I can do that.” Moonlet said. “I am sure you can pass the captain’s test no problem. But I have some better news for you. The new recruit will complete their training soon which means Cherry could come back to this shift if you two so choose.” Luna said. “Really! Well I don’t know about that, she and Sapphire are getting along so well and we’ll already have our weekends together with the new changes!” Moonlet replies. “I don’t know if I want to take her away from a good thing. “She continued. “Now that’s something I never thought I hear you say.” Luna said with a smile. “Wow, thanks for believing in me Luna.” Moonlet said in a monotone glum manner. “Don’t take it the wrong way. I just meant that you’ve really grown from when you two were first separated.” Luna replied. “I'll let you decide to tell Cherry and the two of you could work things out.” “I… I don’t know what to think.” Moonlet said. “I think you’ll make the right decisions when the time comes.” Luna smiled.  “I must continue to monitor the dream world. We’ll talk some more on our next break!” Luna continued as she flew off to her tower. “But… what if I don’t know the right decision…” Moonlet whispered to herself. The night went by without incident and Luna returned for the remaining breaks. The conversations however steered away from the earlier topics and more on future pranks and scavenger hunts. After their last break Moonlet finished her shift and prepares her pass down for Cherry and Sapphire. > Ch 07 Spark-ling Example > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sapphire Spark equips her mechanical wings and steps outside hers and Sugar Clouds house i Ponyville. She adjust her goggles and her horn begins to glow. The wings adjust to the open position and start to flicker on. “Alright, the best part of my day!” Sapphire says with a grin. She squats down and forces herself off the ground. At the top of her jump her wings burst into life and she is thrust forward. “Aaaaaaah Yeeeaaaaah!” Sapphire shouts as she flies through the air. She glances back at her wings and the third aileron on her left wing begins to shake. “Aww man, just like last time.” She says to herself. Her horn dims and her speed begins to wane. “Better take it easy until I figure out why I can’t go any faster.” Sapphire says. As she is slowing down she approaches the Canterlot City limits. Just then Cherry Tune pops up out of nowhere. “Hiya Lovie!” She says. “Oh hi Cherry! Great morning for a flight aye?” Sapphire replies. “Sure is! If you aren’t as clumsy a flier like me!” Cherry chuckles whilst feigning turbulence.   Sapphire removes her mechanical wings as it is not permitted on guard duty nor would it fit with guard armor. She and cherry do their daily patrol as well as placing some presents and pranks for moonlet. “Hey now, you’re a more graceful flier than you give yourself credit for!” Sapphire said. “Me on the other hoof shouldn’t even be up here!” She continued. “Forget that noise! You are living what some ponies dream about!” Cherry Tune replied “You’re living a dream and you worked hard to get here!” She continued. Sapphire smirked and said, “I guess, but this is just barely what I wish I could do! Nothing quite like reading the stories of great warriors, most of which come from the early days of the EUP. Especially the early wonderbolts.” “Oh yeah, stunning performers all of them!” Cherry said. “Not just performers Cherry! Heroes!” Sapphire Spark said staring of into the distance with hope and determination. “Oh to be a hero like the Wonderbolts. That’s is the truest dream of mine.” she explained. “Hey, from what I’ve heard from Sugar’s and your stories, Kluge Town and those in Sand Dune all see you two as heroes after your help with Reaper.” Cherry reassured. Sapphire thought about it and replied “Fair enough I guess, but that’s just two towns in the badlands. One of which was an abandoned castle occupied by pirates!” Cherry Tune and Sapphire Spark touch down outside the guard quarters and head. As they walk over Sapphire sees the Wonderbolts fly overhead lead be Rainbow dash. “See, look at them! Lucky bastards!” Sapphire says in aww. “ I’d give up my magic, horn and left eye for a pair of wings!” She continued. Cherry says “They aren’t that fun.” as she flaps her wings trying to get airborne. “But again! Clumsy flier!” She says poking her tongue at Sapphire Spark. Cherry Tune and Sapphire Spark head inside and change into their armor. Sapphire removes her wings as they are not authorized for wear on duty. They don their armor and they meet up with Moonlet. “Hey girl! How was your night!” Sapphire asked. “Oh it was fine.” Moonlet replied. Cherry and Sapphire look at each other and then back to Moonlet. “ So pretty bad then?” Cherry asked. “Uh…. no not really,  just some changes with the shift again. You know how that goes!” Moonlet says sarcastically nudging Sapphire with her elbow. Moonlet quickly continued before either one could ask questions, saying “Nightfall moved to days so the only time we get to interact is during shift change.” “Aww man that sucks, soor Moon.” Sapphire said. “That’s okay! After we had the same thing happen to us we manage to keep up with each other! I am sure you two will do the same thing!” Cherry replied. “I mean it was shakey at first but we worked it out Moonlet, there’s nothing saying you two can’t do it to!” she continued. Moonlet thought to herself, “Oh yes there is.” She looked at Cherry and Sapphire and changed the subject saying, “ Yeah I guess you’re right, anywho! Y’all going to Promenades birthday party?” “Uh, of course, I am hosting it!” Cherry said. “With the help of Vinyl Scratch of course!” she went on to say. “Oh no way! You didn’t tell me that!” Sapphire said. “I know I said I’ll go but I don’t even know where it is.” she continued. “Yeah Cherry! You didn’t tell me this!” Moonlet said smiling. “Oh! Well I forget sometimes! You ever forget? It happened to me!” Cherry replied with a smile. “It’s going to be at the “Light and Sound” nightclub. Vinyl will be providing the music, naturally. She said “She knows the singer in a great band called the “Waste Land Wailers” and they might make an appearance!” She replied. Sapphire smiles saying, “Wow that sounds like fun! I’ve never been to a nightclub before and Sugar Cloud has always mentioned that she wanted to experience city nightlife!” Moonlet’s eyes widened. “The Waste Land Wailers? You’re telling me Vinyl knows Velvet Remedy?! She’s my favourite singer hooves down!” She said with excitement. “Yeah! Her number one song “Fly like you” is totally my song! Definitely kept me motivated with my mechanical wings project! She’s really big in the Badlands!” Sapphire added. Cherry Tune rubbed her nose and brushed off her shoulder. “Yeah, it’s gonna banging.” She said half seriously with a smirk crossing her arms. Moonlight’s mood brightened up and she said “That sounds like so much fun! Well I gotta go prepare now and get some sleep. I’ll talk to you two later!” “Bye Moon!” Sapphire Spark replied. “Have a good night! Err, sleep cycle!” Cherry added. “Will do!” Moonlet said while trotting off to her home in Cantermore. Cherry Tune and Sapphire tune start their patrol along the wall heading to the fountain. Sapphire had been rambling about other musical artists in the badlands but kept bringing the conversation back to how amazing Velvet Remedy is. A shadow wips past them and Sapphire looks to the sky. She sees Rainbow Dash and the other Wonderbolts flying back from where they went earlier in the day. “Every since I saw the first griffon fly in the badlands I wanted to fly.” Sapphire said. “It didn’t help that my sister and I were the only ponies in the Badlands and our only friends were hippogriffs before the Storm King ran them off. That was before Twilight showed up searching for them. Then when you and Moonlight arrived to search for Reaper, and the princesses bringing the Hippogriffs back to Klugetown! I knew I had to make it to Equestria!” She continued. “Wow I hadn’t realized you two were the only ones out there. That must have been tough.” Cherry said. “It was, Sugar might be my big sister but I made sure the creeps left us alone ya know.” Sapphire replied. “So how’d you make it here to Equestria? My crew left the badlands many moons before you arrived in Ponyville.” Cherry asked. Sapphire replied “Well it wasn’t until Celestia and Luna asked for our help that I even thought we’d make it, but meeting, not one, but TWO princesses who kicked so much tail was inspiring!” “Yeah they’re pretty amazing!” Cherry said with a smile. “How’d you get your wings though? Did you make them?” she continued. Get this after learning that the Hippogriffs could transform freely between their Hippocamp and Hippogriff forms I tried to create a similar gem to turn me into something that could fly. After many failures I ended finding a piece of Luna’s damaged armor and made my wings from it.” Sapphire explained. “Whoa! So those wings are made from Luna’s armor that Moon and I sent her out with?! That’s so cool!” Cherry Tune said. “Yeah it’s quite amazing the small connections that have been bringing us together.” Sapphire Spark said. “I’ve been meeting so many new faces. Some who I’d never thought I‘d meet and others I didn’t know I needed to meet!” She continued. “I hear Sugar met with Rainbow Dash quite early since you two got here. Have you not tried to meet her yet?” Cherry Tune asked. “I mean, no. Not really. It’s never a good idea to meet your heroes ya know?” Sapphire said. “I don’t know about that! I’ve met a couple of my heroes! My mum, my sister! Several of the pony guard! Not to mention Luna!” Cherry replied. “That’s fair…..” Sapphire said, pausing for a moment. “But even if I do meet her, it’s not like I won’t still be a unicorn.  AND it still doesn’t mean I’ll be able to fly with the Wonderbolts… or as one.” she continued. “Oh I am sorry Sapphire, I feel like this conversation has bumbed you out. If I could trade you my wings I would do so in a heartbeat!” Cherry said reasurangly. “Eh it’s alright!” Sapphire said bouncing back. “I am totally amazing as I am anyhow! How many other unicorns do you know that can fly?” she continued. “Ummm…” Cherry said. “Princesses don’t count. They’re alicorns…” Sapphire interrupted. “Welp! You got me there!” Cherry said. "Hey let's start setting up our scavenger hunts! I feel like all this sappy talk has interrupted our shenanigans!” Sapphire said with glee. “Absolutely! I have something special in store for Luna and Moonlight tonight!” Cherry said. The two continue their patrol and set up the new pranks and hunts to Sunny Sides specifications. “Aaah Yeah! This is gonna be great!” Sapphire said. “Sure is! I hope Moonlet likes it.” Cherry replied. “She’ll love it!” Sapphire said. Cherry paused for a moment before saying “Do you think she’ll be alright without Nightfall?” “Yeah, he’s just her commanding officer, any captain should be good enough to know when Moonlet is in charge she’s IN CHARGE, even if she’s just a lowly guard like us!” Sapphire said. “I thought she WAS the one in charge when I first met her for Celestia’s sake.” she added. “Yeah she’s can be pretty assertive when she’s got that spark in her eye.” Cherry said. “It’s just that. I don’t think Nightfall is just a commanding officer to her.” she continued. “Oh! That’s…. That might be an issue.” Sapphire said. “Well perhaps, but him moving is kinda good in a away.” Cherry said Sapphire looked confused and asked “How you figure that?” “Well because now Nightfall isn’t her boss anymore, kinda.” Cherry said. “Hmm maybe, but the Code of Guard is rather thorough with these matters.” Sapphire added. “At any rate, she seemed to be in good spirits this morning so maybe the party will take her mind of it!” She continued. “That’s true! Plus I’ll be there to look out for her! And you too! She warmed up to you a lot faster then most of my other friends.” Cherry said with a chuckle. “Not gonna lie, it was kinda awkward at first but she’s really cool and the two of you remind of me and my sister. Always goofing off when we’re together, getting into trouble. Well, if we were still fillies that is!” Sapphire said. “I can’t wait to meet Sugar Cloud! If she’s as you say I am sure we’ll have an outrageous time at Promenades birthday party!” Cherry said. “Ooooo I’m excited now! Promenade is gonna have a blast with us four causing trouble! I mean... eh heh, having fun.” she continued. “You know it! Hey, it’s almost time for shift change, let’s lay out these last pranks and head over to HQ for the passdown!” Sapphire said. “Yeah! And after work we can go to the Light and Sound to preview the venue and get the party reserved with management.” Cherry said. “And hey! I hear Vinyl Scratch will be there tonight, maybe Sugar would like to come out and join us!” She added. “That sounds like a great idea! I’ll stop by Sugar Cube Corner on my way back and let her know!” Sapphire added. They spend the rest of they day in high spirits and after all the pranks had been set up they head over for the shift passdown. > Ch 08 Angel Cloud Cake > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- While Sapphire Spark is at work Sugar Cloud heads to the Cakes to start her day. Pinkie Pie is at the till as Sugar Cloud enters the front door. “Well hey there Sugar Cube.” Pinkie says in her best but ultimately terrible Apple Jack impression. “Umm, hi Pinkie Pie!” Sugar replies with a smile. “Hehe! My Apple Jack is on point don't cha think!” Pinkie asked rhetorically. “I uh.. I’m sorry I don’t know who that is.” Sugar replied embarrassed. “Oh she’s a friend of mine. One of the elements of harmony!” Pinkie explained. “Anywhose-it! Are you ready for today's challenges?” she continued with excitement. “Challenges? Aren’t I just making cookies?” Sugar asks. “Yes!” Pinkie said. Sugar tilted her head and gave a confused look. “And no!” Pinkie continued. “You’re ability to make cookies from clouds is super-dooper cool and yummy, BUT! With so many customers from all over Equestria coming to the bakery we need help with the other confections too!” she said. “But I can’t make anything else.” Sugar said. “Yup, and with all the cookie orders we’ve been getting most if not all our ovens are always being used making the rest of the baking slow going!” Pinkie said with an unusually excited manner. “That’s why I had Rainbow Dash fly to the the Rainbow Factory to bring us the latest in compact cloud makers!” she continued. Pinkie Pie dragged Sugar Cloud to the kitchen and showed a medium sized device with a hopper on top and an exhaust from the side. “Tada!” Pinkie said. “It’s a prototype mini cloud maker for patch work during the rainy season! It’ll make perfect sized clouds for you so that we free up all our ovens! And since you’re magic is pretty time efficient we can start showing you how to bake even more intricate delicacies.” Pinkie explained. “That’s so cool! How does it work?” Sugar asked. “Easy just pour some room temperature water in the hopper at the top and pull this crank. One crank for one cloud!” Pinkie said. “Let’s test it out with an order of three dozen chocolate chip cookies!” Sapphire poured in  some water in the top and Pinkie cranked the lever. The machine rumbled to life and after a few seconds fluff of perfect cloud puffed out. Sugar cast her spell and the single cloud managed to produce a few batches of cookies for the order and some to spare. The cookies came out soft, warm and perfectly chewy. “See! That would have taken an hour or so to do. Now we can start on the six cakes we have to make!” Pinkie said. “But! We’re gunna try it with your cloud baking spell!” she added. Pinkie turns on the cloud make, creates a mini cloud, and moves it to the baking table. She pulls out cookbook, brings it over to Sugar and asks, “Do you think you can make this?  And not into cloud that rains cake. Although that would be super fun!” she added. Sugar reads the recipe not knowing really if it’s going to help. “Umm let me try.” Sugar said with little confidence. She lowered her horn and concentrated on the cloud. A shot of golden light shot out and stuck the mist and engulfed it in light. The cloud started pulsing and straining under the magic and eventually burst into steam filling the entire kitchen. Pinkie and Sugar start coughing and as the steam dissipated Pinkie said, “Well that wasn’t quite what I was expecting.” She paused for a moment and smelled the air. “Wow, at least it smells like cake! That’s pretty cool!” she said. “I think I can get this!” Sugar said excited about learning a new spell. Pinkie created another cloud and Sugar began to cast her spell. The next cloud burst into a cotton candy like sugary mess. They set up again and try for round three only to have the cloud burst into a runny batter. Attempt after attempt the clouds would either explode into a mess or slop down into a puddle of half baked goop. Sugar sat down exhausted as they were at it for a couple hours. “Hmm perhaps we can be done for the day.” Pinkie said. “This place is a mess and it ain’t cleaning itself..” she added. Cake batter, cotton candy fluff, melted icing, and other confectionery ingredients caked the entire kitchen surfaces.   “Yeah I suppose you’re right, perhaps tomorrow I’ll be able to get it.” Sugar said. “Let me help clean this place up so we can start on baking those cakes the right way!” she went on. “No need! While you were working your magic I managed to bake them all!” Pinkie said. “Wow that was fast, and I didn’t even notice!” Sugar said. “Yeah, my Pinkie sense helped out with avoid most of the explosions.” Pinkie said. “Well anything I can do, I feel bad for not being able to help out and create that cake you showed me.” Sugar said. “Oh don’t feel bad, once you’ve perfected it you’ll be most helpful! BUT I haven’t put the icing on yet so how about after we get this place cleaned up you help with the basics! I call them, the “Basics with Pinkie.” Pinkie said. “I would like that a lot!” Sugar said. They take a few fours to clean the mess and Pinkie shows Sugar how to frost the cake and add the details such as strawberries, peaches, walnuts, almonds, and other toppings to the cakes. She also shows her how to layer cakes with a buttercream spread between the cakes. After the final cake was completely frosted and decorated they place each order into a box and send out notifications to the customers to pick them up. It was almost time to close up shop and Sugar was in the kitchen cleaning up the “traditional” mess of baking while Pinkie Pie dealt with customers. Sugar looked at the cloud maker and lowered her head in defeat. She looks up at it one more time and remembered how Sapphire never gave up on her transformation crystal or her wings. “One more time!” Sugar said with confidence. She pulled the lever and popped out a cloud. Sugar lowered her horn at the cloud and began her spell. She focused her thoughts on the picture in Pinkie’s book and gave it all she had into the spell. The cloud began to glow and expand, growing twice the size as it was before when it suddenly exploded into steam again. “Uh oh” Pinkie said hearing the burst from the counter. She walked back to the kitchen asking “Sugar what happened? Did you try again? Are you alright?” “Yeah..” Sugar coughed “I’m fine, I thought I could do it this time…” The steam cleared as Pinkie walked over to Sugar and to both their surprise there was no mess to clean. On the counter was the cake from Pinkie’s book. “Woooow! That’s amazing” Pinkie said. “It’s not like the one in the recipe in texture but in presentation it’s spot on. Sugars cloud spell a fluffy strawberry chocolate cake with a cherry buttercream frosting, and a raspberry lemon zest drizzle. “What! I did it?” Sugar says in disbelief . “I DID IT! I did it! I did it! I did it!” she squealed while pony hopping in place. “You sure did! And it turned out even more amazing than I had imagined!” Pinkie said. “So what are you gunna call it?” Pinkie asked. “Call it? You want me to name it?” Sugar replied. “Yeah! I name al my new creations!” Pinkie said. “Ummm, I dunno, how about Harold?” Sugar said. “No silly!” Pinkie chuckled. “What are you going to call the recipe? I see it has chocolate and Raspberries, and the frosting smells like cherries and buttercream! And look how fluffy it is!” she continued. “How about the Pinkie Cloud Strawberry Fluff. After all I wouldn’t have been able to do this without you!.” Sugar said. “Aww shucks.” Pinkie said bashfully. “I think that’s perfect!” she continued. “Let’s package this one up and save it for Promenades party!” Pinkie said. “Oh are you going to Promenades party to?” Sugar asked. “No, I heard about the party from Cherry Tune and wanted to surprise both her and Promenade with a special cake. When you showed me your magic I knew you’d be able to help me with it.” Pinkie said. “Oh that’s sweet of you, but why wouldn’t you join us?” Sugar replied. “Cherry Tune did invite me and my friends but we have Elements of Harmony business during that week and wouldn’t be able to make it.” Pinkie said. “That’s why I wanted to make the cake! And with your help it turned out better than I could imagine!” she added. “Well I’ll be sure to let them both now how much you did for them!” Sugar said. “Aww thank you Sugar. Let’s clean up and close up shop for the day.” Pinkie said. “Can do!” Sugar replied with jubilation. ….. ….. ….. Pinkie looked over at Sugar while they swept. “Do you think you can do cupcakes like that?” she asked. Sugar Cloud face hoofed. > Ch 09 Cherry Tune > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Cherry Tune wakes up and hops out of bed. She trots towards the castle and hears Spitfire overhead. "Toora, loora, toora, loora, aye" Spitfire sings. Cherry smiles and puts on her purple headphones and takes flight. Cherry waves at Luna who was sipping coffee in a tower overlooking the guard post. Down below Sunny waves to Cherry as Sapphire flies in and lands next to Sunny. Cherry heads down and to the armory to put on her gear while Sapphire followed behind.             Cherry bounces to the tunes in her headphones before turning them off and putting them away. “Always so chip Cherry! Dare I say brighter the Sunny herself!” Sapphire said as she removed her mechanical wings. “It’s just a particularly good day today Sapphire!” Cherry said. “Oh yeah why’s that?” Sapphire asked. “No reason, just woke up on the greatest side of the stable I guess!” Cherry replied with a smile. “Well I agree with you on that! It’s going to be pretty fun day today!” Sapphire said. Cherry and Sapphire dawn their armor and head out on patrol. They avoided their usual placement of pranks and both of them decided to do a flood of scavenger hunts to spread their good day vibes.. They placed notes on each of the night and day guards lockers with a miniature puzzle based clue. At the end of each hunt there was an item meant for the specific pony in mind. Some received candy, others stuffed animals, some color pencils, and many other personable gifts. They planned the whole event with the approval of the captains, and it spanned over both halves of the week and both night and day shift. They also left surprises for Luna and Celestia. With the extra newly qualified recruits Cherry and Sapphire spent the entire day setting up for this huge endeavor. The entire day passed by extraordinarily fast for the two and before they knew it the weekend was ready to greet them. During the start of a long weekend Cherry Tune takes a trip away from the busy streets of Canterlot and into a relaxing environment like Ponyville. Her stays were rather unorthodox as she’d spend most evenings relaxing in a tree outside Sugar Cube Corner. This time however she was on a mission to distribute Prominade’s birthday party invites to those living in Ponyville. That afternoon she had flown to her thinking tree outside Sugar Cube Corner and strummed a jaunty tune, when she heard a ruckus under her tree. She looked over the edge and saw a white stallion with light blue eyes and orange mane and tail struggling with a cart. “Hiya!” Cerrysaid. “Oh, hello.” The stallion replied. “Whatcha up to?” Cherry asked. The stallion released himself form the cart straps, turned to Cherry and said, “I’m building some equipment for the armory but I am struggling to get my materials to the workshop.” “Well that is an awful lot of supply, why so much? I don’t recall the Ponyville guards requesting armor.” Cherry replied. “Yeah, after Reaper we lost a lot of our equipment so I answered an ad to build some. That and I am working on becoming a master artisan and could really use the experience.” He said. “I have three more carts back at the Carousel Boutique. It’s gunna be a long week!” he continued. “Maybe I can help! I’m Cherry Tune!.” Cherry Tune said. “Really! That’d be great! The linen isn’t so much a problem, it’s the bronze at the bottom that’s the heaviest. I’m Hamsterking!” Hamsterking replied. Hamsterking pulled the first cart to the workshop and Cherry went back to grab one of the others. When she arrived at the workshop they both head to the Boutique, grab the last two, and start walking to the workshop. “So what brings you to Ponyville Cherry?” Hamsterking asks. “I like to come here and unwind from Canterlot life. It’s not that I do a whole lot there but it’s always so busy with….. Kinda snooty creatures making a ruckus.” Cherry said. “Hmm well it’s certainly busy down here in Ponyville.” Hamsterking replied. “Sure but you’re all so friendly down here. Not that Canterlot is not friendly, it’s just shows more here!” Cherry said. “Well you’re pretty friendly for being from Canterlot! You’re helping me move my stuff to the workshop!” Hamsterking said. “And you didn’t just walk off with the cart of other supplies so that’s pretty cool.” He continued. “Couldn’t just hang out in mah tree and watch ya struggle!” Cherry Tune said. They arrive at the workshop and Cherry gives the cart to Hamsterking. “Well I got a lot of work to do for the upcoming order! See ya around Cherry! Thanks for the help!” Hamsterking says. “Oh no problem at all! See you around King!” Cherry replied. “Likewise Cherry! And if you’re still in town you can come check out what I made in a few hours!” Hamsterking says while waving. “Will do!” Cherry says. Cherry Tune hadn’t thought about doing work while on her days off but she definitely saw an opportunity to find a new supplier of armor for the Canterlot guard. Just as Ponyville lost a lot of its arms and equipment when the six spirits and Reaper attacked, so did Canterlot. Hamsterking might prove to show some quality craftsmanship. In the meantime Cherry flies back a top her tree and sprawls out in the evening sun. After a an hour nap on her tree rolls over and sees Hamsterking with another load of material. Cherry tilts her head in confusion. She sits up stretches with a big yawn, and then hops down next to King. “Hey King! Cherry said. “Oh hey! Didn’t think I’d see again Cherry!” Hamsterking replied. “What do you mean? I said I was going to check out your wares in a few hours didn’t I? And I am a mare of my word!” Cherry said. “That’s right! I did say you could come check it out!.” Hamsterking replied. “However not only did I build all the required items for my client, they came by my shop and bought it all right there and asked for another order!” He continued. “I am guessing that’s what that cart of stuff is for then?” Cherry asked. “Indeed! Fortunately it’s just the one cart this time but you are more than welcome to tag along. That way I can show you the new stuff I’m am working on!” Hamsterking said. They walk to his workshop and Hamsterking pulls the canvas off the cart revealing charms with a slight glow to them. “What are they?” Cherry asked. “They’re called Harmonies.” Hamsterking replied. “They contain magic from various spells. If I attach them to the armor I make it’ll enchant it with magical properties.” He explained. “Wow! How strong are the spells?” Cherry asked. “Not very but it’ll help you recover slight wounds or give you a second wind when you find yourself fatigued.” Hamsterking replied. “One more question! Where’d you get them from?” Cherry inquired again. “Starlight Glimmer and Trixie were practicing some magic when Trixie accidentally cast a spell of some crystals. The result was a rough charm that gave off a magical aura. Starlight and Trixie then remembered the enchanted items of the six spirits and recreated armor enchantments.” Hamsterking explained. “Wow, you sure do know a lot!” Cherry said. “I take my craft very seriously!” King replied. “Well I was going to wait until after the new moon but I gotta confess. I want you to be the Canterlot guard supplier.” Cherry said. “Wait what! I don’t know about that. Making armor for Ponyville guard is one thing but Canterlot guard? I wouldn’t even know where to get the proper alloy for their armor.” Hamsterking said. “Don’t you worry! The resources will be provided to you! All you gotta do is build the armor. And from what I’ve seen, this armor is absolutely quality!” Cherry said. “Well that would be amazing! I never thought I’d make it to Canterlot guard this quickly!” Hamsterking said. “Well, don’t get too excited! It’ll be a couple weeks. I need to present my findings to those above me. BUT if I buy a whole set of your bronze armor with the harmonies in it, I am certain the approval process will go by swiftly!” Cherry said. “Hey you don’t need to buy it! I’ll give you my finest set for free. If what you say is true than your contact with in the guard will be payment enough!” Hamsterking said with delight. “Awesome! I’ll keep you updated!” Cherry replied. “Hey I gotta go but I’ll send an envoy from the guard house in Canterlot to grab the stuff. But before I go I think you might make a few new contacts at this party I’m hosting. Here’s an invite letter if you’re interested!” Cherry continued. Hamsterking takes the letter and says “Wow! The “Light and Sound” nightclub aye? I’ll see how my schedule looks!”. “Bye again King! See ya around!” Cherry Tune says flying off. “Bye Cherry Tune!” Hamsterking replied waving. > Ch 10 Promenade's B-day > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Promenade takes a deep breath and sighs as she looks at herself in the mirror. Sunny Side knocks on the door and asks, “Hey Promenade, you doing alright in there? We don’t have to go if you don’t feel up to it. I am sure everyone will understand.” Promenade breaths in again. “I’m fine! Let’s get this party started!” She said with forced confidence. Promenade opens the bathroom door to reveal her mane and tail done up quite stunningly. “Whoa…” Sunny let out with a near gasp. “Is everything with Meryl all set up?” Promenade asked. “Umm… what?” Sunny replied taken back by Promenade. “OH! Yes, she is having a sleepover with the Crusaders tonight. Turns out it’s Apple Bloom’s birthday too so they are also having a get together.” Sunny said. “That’s good! Had I known it was Apple Bloom’s birthday I would have gotten her something.” Promenade said. “Already covered! Meryl and I got her something a week ago. You do so much already we thought we’d take this one” Sunny Side said. “Oh, that’s kind of you” Promenade said a little disappointed. “Don’t worry, Promenade. I made sure to throw in a little something from you too.” Sunny replied with a wink. “I just didn’t want to over burden you that’s all.” she continued. “Thank you Sunny, I guess I have been taking on a lot. Shall we meet up with the party then?” Promenade asked. “Yes! Let’s get going. The birthday girl wouldn’t want to be late to her own party!” Sunny exclaimed. Sunny Side and Promenade head to the train station to meet up with, among others, Vinyl, Octavia, Bon Bon, Cherry Tune, Sapphire Spark and Sugar Cloud, Moonlet, and possibly Nightfall. Sunny and Promenade meet up with everyone, except Nightfall who was on duty, and the nine of them go to an electronic swing bar in Canterlot where DJ Pon3, Velvet Remedy and the Wasteland Wailers were performing their with other bands peppered in between. “Welcome to the “Light and Sound” Promenade! I hope you enjoy yourself here, it’s my personal favourite!” Vinyl Scratch said. “Thanks Vinyl! I am sure to have a wonderful time!” Promenade said. “Fantastic! Well I gotta go run our music for the first half of the night! Have a couple drinks on me.” Vinyl said with a wink. She then headed to the DJ booth and the announcer introduced her. “Please welcome DJ Pon3 and the “Wasteland Wailers” as they perform a stunning new hit sweeping Canterlot by storm, “Fly like me”.” the announcer said. Promenade walked over to the bar where she saw Octavia sitting. As she walked passed the stage she overheard Vinyl speaking with Velvet Remedy saying “It’s good to finally meet you in person Velvet.” Velvet Remedy replied, “Likewise Vinyl” Promenade sat at the bar with Moonlet, Lyra, Bon Bon, and Octavia, who was mean mugging Velvet. Sapphire and Sugar are heavy drinkers and party hard throughout the night. A product of Klugetown nightlife. Sapphire finds Vernal Bloom, a mare of dark green coat and light green mane and tail. Sapphire strikes up a conversation and inquires about Vernal’s cutie mark, three Datura Inoxia, commonly known as Moon Flowers, crossing each other in full bloom. “So those are pretty, I’ve never seen such flowers before.” Sapphire said. “They are known as Moonflowers and they smell wonderful when in season.” Vernal BLoom said. “It’s actually the scent I am wearing now.” She continued. “Really? May I?” Sapphire asked politely. “Of course.” Vernal replied. Sapphire leaned in to Vernal and gave a gently smell. The perfume struck a memory of Sapphires past. She recalled that her father would always bring her mother that scent when he returned from his deployments. “That’s amazing!” Sapphire said. “Where’d you get it?” she asked. “I found an old recipe my grandfather never quite perfected. He said that even though the scent was powerful, it never lasted the night. Just like the moonflower which only blooms for one night” Vernal said. “So you’re a perfumist huh? That’s pretty cool, I’ve never really had the chance to try perfumes. Klugetown isn’t really a place for such things” Sapphire said. “Maybe you could come by my shop tomorrow and check out some of my other scents.” Vernal said brushing her mane out of her face and behind her ear. “I would enjoy that very much!” Sapphire said sipping the last drops of her drink leaning in close on the table. Sugar Cloud walked by and nudged Sapphire giving a wink while placing a refreshment in front of her. “Gotcha you another one sis, and I noticed your new friend likes the Lemon Twister so I got her one too.” Sugar said. “Oh thank you….um.” Vernal said. “Sugar Cloud! Don’t worry, the bartender is going to bring it over and make it on the spot, the special… fire twister way. Enjoy mon cheri.” Sugar replied in a sultry tone giving one last wink. “That was, strange.” Vernal said. “Yup, that’s my sister. I hope you don’t mind.” Sapphire Spark replied. “Not at all, I too have...quirky relatives.” Vernal said with a giggle. Just then the bartending staff made there way over and began the light show that was the Fire Lemon Twister. Sugar Cloud laughed in a devious yet playful manner as she walked over to the bar where most of the girls were hanging out. She brushes up against Promenade, Moonlet, Lyra, Bon Bon, and Octavia as she walks passed them rubbing her tail under their chins as she passed. Sugar looks back winking at Promenade and flicking her tail under Moonlets chin before tripping over a stool she wasn’t paying attention to. She quickly stands up and staggers. “Oh goodness are you alright?” Bon Bon asked. Sugar rubs her elbow and says “Aye” while hoof gunning at the group. They all chuckle and Sunny Side, who witnessed the whole thing, walked over as she returned from the restrooms. “That… was amazing Sugar!” Sunny said. “Indeed.” Octavia chuckled. “Delightfully clumsy, although charming all the same.” she continued. “More like awkward.” Moonlet said. Lyra chuckled “Reminds me when Bon Bon was on that secr--” Bon Bon quickly covered Lyra’s mouth “Eh heheheh, she means that one time I uh.. Tripped... and uh fell in the pool… yeah.” she stumbled to explain. “You’re alright Bon Bon. Y’all were on “vacation”.” Sunny winked. “But let’s get you a cider Sugar Cloud for that wonderful performance!” She continued. “Oh now that sounds lovely!” Sugar said. Sugar and Sunny sit at the edge of the bar where Promenade had been sitting. “ So how’s it going Promenade, you doing alright? “ Sunny asked. “Actually I am doing quite well thank you! It’s been awhile since I’ve had a night like this and it’s actually a really good time.” Promenade said. “What!?” Cherry Tune said popping out from behind the bar. “What do you mean “actually a good time?”” She asked eyeballing Promenade. “Oh , I didn’t mean it like that, I meant it’s not what I expected. No, that sounds wrong to, I mean I----” Promenade stumbled to explain herself. She began to fall into herself thinking she messed up. “Relax Promenade.” Cherry Tune said with a smile while placing her hoof on Promenade’s shoulder. “I didn’t mean anything by it I was just joking around that’s all. I just you to have the night that makes you happy ok?” Cherry continued. “Oh, thank you Cherry, I know you worked hard on all of this. And everything seems to be exactly what I would have wanted. I hadn’t realized you knew me this well.” Promenade said. “Well, I did get help from a few others.” Cherry Tune gestured to almost the entire night club. “Everyone put a little something for you into this night.” Cherry Tune said “Even Pinkie Pie” she whispered. Pinkie Pie popped up from behind the bar as well. “Shhhhhhhhh.” she said while slowly lowering back behind the counter. “Are you two even supposed to be back there?” Sunny asked. “Shhhhhhhh” Cherry Tune said while also slowly drifting back behind the counter.  “Nope!” She said jumping out in front of the bar. “Another fire Lemon Twister sir!” Vernal said in the distance. “So how about we hit that dance floor and boogie all night!” Cherry said. “Oh, I don’t dance…” Promenade said. “But… but aren’t you a dancer in the Canterlot Troupe?” Moonlet asked. Promenade turned to Moonlet and winked at her poking her tongue out. “Oh! Heheh just wondering.” Moonlet said. Promenade shot back the last of her drink span around in her stool and jumped up to the dance floor. “Alright ladies, who wants to impress me out on the dance floor?” Promenade said with uncharacteristic confidence. A sudden fireball erupts from Spark’s and Vernal’s table and Promenade didn’t even look over. “Woohoo!” Vernal shouted. “I don’t know about impress, but I’ll be entertaining if my earlier display is an indication!” Sugar Cloud said. “I’ll go a round with you dear.” Octavia said with a grin, glancing at Vinyl. “I might play the cello professionally but I studied dance as well. Let’s see if we can turn some heads!” she continued. Octavia grabs Promenade and heads to the dance floor. While the two perform elegantly with the beats and rhythm the remaining girls pour out to the stage and dance to the music mingling with those already dancing. Nightfall quietly shuffles in from the front and heads towards the bar where his passes Sapphire. “Hey Nightfall, glad you could make it.” Sapphire said curiously.” “Oh, hey there Sapphire. How’s the party going.?” He responded nervously. “”Pretty good, and it’s barely even begun. So you could spend all night if you’re able.” Sapphire said. “How long can you? Thought you’d be at work.” she continued. Nightfall thinks back to an hour or so ago. “.......Eheheh let’s just say Luna helped me out a bit.” “Cool, well this is Vernal Bloom, she is a perfumist!” Sapphire said. “Hi! Nightfall, was it?” Vernal said. “Indeed.” Nightfall replied. “He’s a little stuffy don’t you think Sapphire?” Vernal asked. Nightfall glowered. “Uh heheheh, He’s kinda my boss soooo no?” Sapphire said. “Oh… sorry.” Vernal replied. “Don’t say sorry to me…” Sapphire said. “Don’t worry about, it’s not the first time…” Nightfall interjected. “Hey Nightfall, Moonlet’s over there at the bar. You should go talk to her.” Sapphire said. Nightfall whispered to himself, “Does everyone know!?”. “Yeah thanks Sapphire.” Nightfall said making his way towards the bar where Moonlet was sitting. “Oh! And one more thing Night! You should come by Vernal’s shop tomorrow. I have a feeling you’re going to need what she’s selling in the future.” Sapphire said. “I’ll be more pleasant tomorrow I swear!” Vernal said. “First impressions aren’t my strong suite!” she continued as Nightfall walked away. “Mine either apparently.” Nightfall muttered to himself. Vinyl had just finished her set at the DJ booth and head down to the dance floor to gently rip Octavia from Promenade. “Thank you Promenade for keeping Octavia, entertained while I worked.” Vinyl said. Vinyl gently motioned to Octavia as if to begin dancing with her but instead gently placed her a foot away. Vinyl then turned to Promenade. “If you are willing, mind if I return the favor?” Vinyl asked while giving Octavia a smirk and a side eye over her glasses. “Oh, uhmmm…” Promenade leaned over and looked at Octavia who stood there unsure of what just happened. “Great! DJ Tune! Don’t let me down!” Vinyl Scratch said. “Sure thing!” Cherry Tune said. Vinyl took Promenade and danced energetically. She had not been used to the quick moves that Vinyl was presenting but was quickly catching on. She recalled a famous swing routine from when her and her crew used to go dancing back in her reservist years. Promenade motioned over Octavia and Sunny who were still on the dance floor and they joined in. Neither Octavia or Vinyl were truly angry at each other and the dancing put an end to the little nighttime feud they had going on. Soon most of the nightclub had joined the mares and danced to the rhythm and the beat. Promenade looked over at the bar and saw Nightfall approach Moonlet. In an instant while looking at Nightfall she remembered someone he looked like at that moment. She quickly left the dance floor to head to the balcony outside. While most of Promenades fiends noticed, Sunny motioned everyone to go on with the night while she went to over to care for Promenade. Sunny went by the bar and grabbed two glasses of water. She walked outside passed the few others who were also on the balcony. Some guests were macking and eating each others faces, while others had delightful conversations over candle light. Promenade was at the fire pit looking out over the edge. In the distance the moon sat quietly at the edge of the lake, it’s light reflecting off the surface of the calm waters. “Hey you doing ok sweety?” Sunny said handing Promenade a glass of water. “I’m fine. Just had a … hiccup, that’s all.” she replied retrieving the water gulping a few mouthfuls down. “You want to call it a night?” Sunny said. “Absolutely not! I haven’t had this much fun in a long time.” Promenade said. “Thanks for looking out for me…. again. Please enjoy the party, I’ll be back in there in a moment.” Promenade continued. “You know how this goes, I don’t leave until I know you’re good.” Sunny said with a smile. Promenade was a little irritated but knew Sunny was coming from a good place…. and for good reason. “How about we sit around the fire until we finish our waters then?” Promenade said. “Sure thing!” Sunny replied. The two mares finish their waters and head back in. Cherry Tune had been booed off stage for trying to play her banjo while Octavia, Vinyl, Bon Bon, and Lyra tried to coral her. “Oh dear, this can’t end well.” Sunny said. “But it sure will be fun to watch!” Promenade said. “Think they’ll try something at the dinner party upstairs?” she asked. “I hope not…. How’d you know about the dinner party?” Sunny said. “Please, I’m smarter than I look.” Promenade smiled. “ Plus it’s on Cherry’s invite… that she gave me…” she continued. “Oh… fair enough. Well I certainly worked up an appetite after all that dancing. The two mares join the group and head to the fourth floor to their dinner reservations. The music was still thumping from below and it played in the dining room but at low enough levels so that conversations could take place. Moonlet, Nightfall, Promenade, Sunny, Sapphire, Vernal, Bon Bon, Lyra, Vinyl, Octavia, Sugar, Cherry Tune, sat at the largest table while Velvet Remedy, Hamsterking, the Wasteland Wailers and a few high priority guests sat off at different tables reserved for them. The dinner went smoothly offering all the junk foods a pony could dream of, nachos, burgers, chili hay fries. Desert was something of a treat  created by Sugar Cloud and Pinkie Pie earlier that day to include Sugar’s signature cloud cookies and the jointly named Pinkie Cloud Strawberry Fluff, but in cupcake form! The drinks kept flowing and the night went on. > Ch 11 Moonlet's Lullaby > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Nightfall sat at his office about ready to head on patrol when he hears and know at his door. HE walks over to see a guardspony holding a picnic basket. “Young pone if you’re trying to bribe me…. It’s working.” Nightfall said with a straight face. “What? Oh Ugh… Sir.” The guard stuttered. “Moonlet said to drop this off for you. She said it’s for the break you two take at the fountain with Luna.” he continued. “Is that so?” He looked into the basket. She had made her usual smiley faced sandwiches and brewed an extra thermos of tea as Nightfall is terrible at making it himself. “Thank you.” Nightfall said. “So do you really know the prin--” Nightfall shut the door oblivious to the question the guard pony was asking. He was lost in thought about the basket and what it meant. The guard was still outside “Oh..uhmm, right… “ The guard said before returning to his post. Nightfall armored up for his patrol and headed to the fountain where he’d have his first break. With Luna. By himself. “I don’t even know her like that.” Nightfall muttered to himself. “ This could not get anymore awkward…” he continued. He sat at the fountain for a few moments and thought to himself, “Maybe she forgot. That would pretty great. A relief really.” He looked around and it was already five minutes into the break. Typically at this point if she hadn’t shown up she would until the next break. “Well thank Celestia for that. Good thing she didn’t show or this would be the worst night ever.” He said aloud. “Is that so.” Luna said gently landing behind him has he put the thermos away. “Ahhhhg!!!” Nightfall shouted. “Oh uh.. Ma’am… uhm… It’s not how it sounded.” he stumbled to say. Luna just raised an eyebrow. “You’re a weird one aren’t you Nightfall?” Luna asked in all seriousness. “Umm wow… ugh .. “ Nightfall sighed… “yeah….yeah I am, I guess. Not exactly great with social interactions and all that.” He said lowering his head. “Well how about you start with some tea and sandwiches?” Luna asked gesturing to the basket. “Oh of course ma’am.” He said while Luna glowered. Nightfall set up the plates in silence and distributed the tea and sandwiches. Luna looked on, slightly amused but also confused. She never thought about it before now, but she noticed Nightfall hardly spoke at these breaks. It was usually Moonlet who did most of the talking while he set up most of the picnic. They sat down and munched on the food and sipped their tea in silence. “Soooo… you and Moonlet figure things out?” Luna asked breaking the silence as she sat next to Nightfall on the fountain. “Uhm..I don’t know.” Nightfall said awkwardly sipping tea from his glass. “I see.” Luna said also awkwardly sipping tea. “You didn’t want to support Promenade at her birthday party either?” Luna asked. “Umm… well…” Nightfall muttered. “So you’re avoiding Moonlet because you don’t know how to handle you situation. Hence the shift change.” Luna said raising an eyebrow. Nightfall looked over at Luna “Ma’am, you of all ponies should know---” “First!” Luna cut him off. “Don’t call me ma’am….ever. Second do not presume to tell me what I should know.” she added. Nightfall sank into himself lowering is head and ears while looking up at her as might a child being scolded. “And Third, I DO know that in my centuries as princess and overseer of the nights guard that your situation is not unique. And the ones that work out the best are the ones where both parties openly talk about it.” Luna lectured. “I… still don’t know what to do… even if we spoke about it.” Nightfall said. “You even sound like her.” Luna said with a smirk. “Ever unsure of what the other is going to say, or how the other feels. I am not saying it’ll be easy, I am also not saying it’ll work out the way either of you wish.” Luna said solemnly while she slowly glanced away. “But keeping things cooped up only makes matters worse. This I know all too well.” she continued. “I’ll… I’ll talk to her next shift change.” Night said. Luna raised an eyebrow and asked. “Is she not at at Promenades birthday?” “Yeah but I can’t go I’m at work.” Nightfall said. “Do I have to fire you Nightfall? It’ll certainly solve a lot of your issues wouldn’t it?” Luna said with a smirk. “Ma’am!” Nightfall exclaimed. “Uh I mean, Luna?” he continued. “I reviewed the records and you didn’t attempt to put in leave or even ask your commanders for time off or support. So, I’m giving you the night off, and tomorrow night too.” Luna said. “But what about my duties? What would the others think if I wasn’t here because of personal matters?” Nightfall said. “Nightfall you are truly a hard working and determined captain. I don’t think anyone would blame you for taking a little time to yourself. Now get out of here before Promenade’s party is over.” Luna said. Nightfall replied “But--” “Don’t make me order you to have fun Nightfall.” Luna said. “Yes, Ma--- Luna, and thank you.” He said softly, quickly giving her a hug. Nightfall bolts off to change out of his armor while Luna is left there thinking to herself. “Bold of you to do that Nightfall. Very Bold.” Nightfall removes his armor and passes down the relevant information for duties to his second in command. He then heads over to the “Light and Sound” where he runs into Sapphire and her new friend Vernal Bloom. After a brief conversation he heads towards Moonlet. “Oh! And one more thing Night! You should come by Vernal’s shop tomorrow. I have a feeling you’re going to need what she’s selling.” Sapphire said while Nightfall walks away. “I’ll be more pleasant tomorrow I swear!” Vernal said. “First impressions aren’t my strong suite!” she continued. “Mine either apparently.” Nightfall muttered to himself. “Heyyyyyy, Moonlet.” He said while sitting next to Moonlet at the bar. She starred with a blank expression on her face. Sugar Cloud saw from across the dance floor and slowly made her way over to Cherry Tune. They both laid low and made their way closer to Nightfall and Moonlet. “Thought you weren’t going to make it.” Moonlet said crossing her hooves. “I uhhh. Luna kinda helped me out.” Nightfall said. “You spoke to Luna!” Moonlet said “Why!? When? What’d you talk about?” She panicked a little. “At our break… that you brought the picnic basket for...” He said confused. “And nothing… just why I wasn’t here at Proms birthday….” he continued, leaving out the part about Moonlet. “Oh… eheheh. Right.” Moonlet said. “So I hear this place is pretty nice.” Nightfall said. “It is.” Moonlet said twiddling her hooves. They both sat there for a moment in silence. Before Cherry Tune slid from the side and over behind the bar again. “So who wants a drink?” Cherry Said cleaning a glass with a towel. Nightfall replied “Nah, I’m goo--” “I recommend the Fire twister lemon margarita!” Sugar Cloud said sliding in from the other side also behind the bar. “It’s perfect for couples.” She continued with hoof guns. Moonlet and Nightfall both shot a glare at Sugar Cloud. “Eheheh or perhaps not….” Sugar replied putting out a blow torch she found. “Here, nothing beats a Sweet Apple Acres hard apple cider!” Cherry said cracking two bottles open and sliding one to Nightfall and one to Moonlet. “What do you say captain? Chug it.” Moonlet says as she bounces her brow. “Fine.” Nightfall taps the bottle on the counter then throws it back. “How about it, sergeant. Think you can keep up?” he replied. Moonlet frowns then smiles. “We doing this?” she asked before pounding the cider back. “Hey, hey, hey!!! Those are a rare commodity! You can’t just chug Sweet Apple Acre hard apple cider!” Cherry scolded. “If you want to do this---” “And we are doing this.” Moonlet interrupted. “Then we gotta go with the hard stuff.” Sugar Cloud added, pulling out a shiney bottle of distilled cider. “40 horsepower! That’s the stuff.” She continued. “Hey Cherry! You left the stage! Get back up there and finish what you started!” Vinyl barked. “Awww, but I ran out of things to play.” Cherry said. “Well I know for a fact you play the banjo, you better get up there!” Vinyl insisted. “Aww man, Okie…” Cherry said with a pouty face. “Don’t go too hard you two! I’ll be back in a sec.” Cherry said with a coy grin. Cherry Tune grabbed a banjo from back stage and proceeded to the microphone saying “Alright mah pones! Y’all heard from the best of the best now time to hear from the worst!” “Oh no…” Moonlet said. “Um Vinyl, you better get her!” “Why?” Vinyl asked but no sooner had she asked before Cherry began strumming her banjo. A deliberate offbeat and off key cacophony let out across the club. All manner of creatures at the club started booing and throwing stuff at the stage. “Ughhh, I’m gunna hurt her.” Vinyl said calmly while walking toward Cherry. Vinyl motioned to Bon Bon, Lyra, and Octavia and they surround Cherry. “Mosh Pit!” Cherry cried out, slapping on some heavy metal in the DJ stand, and jumping into the crowd. The creatures and pones were un-amused with Cherry Tune but took to the heavy metal. As Cherry fell towards the group, as if parting a grand body of water, they split down the middle leaving Cherry to slam on the floor. Just then Sunny Side and Promenade walked in from the balcony unsure of the commotion. Vinyl took back the DJ booth and regained the crowd’s favor adding her own twist to the heavy metal. The venue regained their energy and Vinyl took this moment to enjoy herself. “Gotta say, looks kinda fun!” Vinyl said before throwing herself to the crowd. “I suppose.” Octavia said jumping off stage as well shortly followed by Lyra and Bon Bon. The crowd caught and lifted the mares into the air unlike Cherry Tune who had limped her way back over to Sugar, Moonlet, and Nightfall. “Well Sugar Cloud, looks like I win this round!” Cherry Tune said knowing full well what she was doing. “Oh the night is young dear sister! And my awkwardness knows no bounds!” Sugar Cloud replied. “Shall we continue?” Moonlet asked. “Hold on!” Cherry said. “We got the banquet upstairs to get to.” she continued. “Then after we can finish what we started.” Moonlet said. The group of friends move upstairs and the dinner went smoothly, offering all the junk foods a pony could dream of, nachos, hay burgers, chili hay fries. Dessert was something of a treat created by Sugar Cloud and Pinkie Pie earlier that day to include Sugar’s signature cloud cookies and the jointly named Pinkie Cloud Strawberry Fluff, but in cupcake form! The drinks kept flowing. After the meal, the party continued on the third floor and parts of the Promenades group trickled down a few at a time. Moonlet, Nightfall, Cherry Tune, and Sapphire were the first to head down to finish their drinking game. After a couple of shots the two were starting to feel the warmth of the booze flow through them. This calmed them down enough and they began talking in between shots and eventually stopped the shots all together. “Look, in all seriousness… I am glad you came out.” Moonlet said a little aggressively. “Aye, and I am glad that you were here when I showed up.” Nightfall replied looking over at her. Sugar Cloud and Cherry Tune were “cleaning glasses” behind the bar again pretending not to listen in. Nightfall and Moonlet paused for a moment. Though they had quite a few beverages they were still aware of who was around and that kept them from talking too much. Promenade fully aware of their situation walks over to “order another drink” though she already more than both Nightfall or Moonlet. Promenade walks in between the two and puts her arms around both of them. She leans over to Moonlet and whispers “Maybe the firepit... balcony.. would.. should… be a good place to talk.” Promenade struggled to speak a full sentence but got her point across. The balcony was largely empty and the fire pit was reserved for Promenade and her guests and it was empty. Moonlet leaned back a little and looked passed Promenade’s wings which were drooping due to how intoxicated the rather tiny mare was. Moonlet nodded at Nightfall and he and Moonlet placed Promenade in one of the bar stools motioning to cut off Promenade to Sugar and Cherry. The two behind the bar nodded and placed a glass of water in front of Promenade as she laid her head on the counter, her face flush and with peaceful smile. Moonlet and Nightfall walk outside to the fire pit with drinks in hoof and sit near the edge where the view of the night still sparkled with magic. “So… I like you captain.” Moonlet said not raising her gaze from her glass. “When you say it like that, it makes it harder to say it back.” Nightfall said. “Like what?” Moonlet asked. “When you call me captain. As if you know, as you should, that captains and the guard can’t like each other like that. It is improper and unprofessional.” Nightfall answered. “And you say THAT as if you feel the same way…” Moonlet replied looking up him. Nightfall looked over saying. “I do, but we both know the code--” “The code, just like Luna said huh.” Moonlet interrupted. “So true to the code of guard that you can’t live a little for yourself.” She added. Nightfall replied with a hint of frustration “You know it’s not that simple. If word got out that a captain and his subordinate were--” “Subordinate huh?” She interrupted again. “So you just see me as some subordinate huh? Not that I practically ran the night shift as a captain when we needed captains. Or that, between me and Cherry Tune, the both of us have been AND are in command of our own special units which no other guard has done in centuries? A position that only captains or commanders are entrusted to?” She continued. “No you are not just some subordinate, but the laws we follow keep our guard strong and the titles help maintain discipline and line of authority. To ignore it for personal gain is against our oaths. It could set the guard back months.” Nightfall explained. Cherry Tune and Sugar Cloud peered out the window and saw that Nightfall and Moonlet’s conversation was breaking out to an argument. Suddenly Moonlet stood up and quickly walked off back into the club. She quickly ran up to the fourth floor, she saw Sunny and Promenade sitting at a table and sat next to them. Nightfall huffed and turned away as Moonlet stomped off. He gave a big sigh and then walked in through the doors to look for Moonlet. He scanned the crowds and made eye contact with Cherry Tune and Sugar Cloud who looked away as if not paying attention. Nightfall walked over and sat back at his bar stool. “Well Cherry Tune, I believe we’ve found our winner.” Sugar said smugly. “Yes indeed good mare. Such a spectacular failure. Crash and burned the whole way down.” Cherry Tune replied. “And it was going quite well too.” Sugar said. “Would you two cut it out.” Nightfall snapped. “Clearly I have no idea what I’m doing.” he continued. Cherry leaned over and started to say, “Well capi-tan…” Nightfall frowned at her. “Perhaps we can be of some help?” She continued. “Oh, unless you can change the code of guard then I don’t think there is anything you can do.” Nightfall said. “No I’m afraid not, but we all know that you and Moonlet know exactly what to do. You just don’t like the options presented to you.” Cherry said. “You’re starting to sound like Luna.” Nightfall replied. “Well we did spend a lot of time together so I kinda look to her as a mentor and a friend. Buuuuut I know my best friend, and I know you. The both of you are smart enough to see the the few paths you two have.” Cherry said. “Tell you what. I might not show it, or act like it, or really convey that I am too bright…. however I’ve been looking into this for many moons now and I think you two should talk it out. For real this time, not at a party or at work, but among yourselves and me of course!” she added. “Aww why not me too?!” Sugar said folding her arms and frowning. “Shush you!” Cherry playfully quipped. “Here, this is a pamphlet of the Vernal Equinox Lantern Festival. Vernal Bloom showed it to me earlier. I was thinking of taking her myself but maybe you should. I think that’d be a perfect time to let it all out. But first! You have to apologize! Here this is her favourite drink. It’s a shot of moonshine, half ounce each of cherry liqueur and almond liqueur, muddled blackberries with mint, 4 ounces Iced Lavender Tea, and garnished with a passion Flower or it’s petals! I call it the Moonlet Lullaby! After her of course!” Cherry said. “Wow… so you came up with this for her?” Nightfall asked. “Yup! It helped her through a stressful period in her life where she had a lot of anxiety and found it hard to get sleep.” Cherry explained. “Now stop wasting time and go apologize, she’s upstairs.” Cherry ordered. Nightfall took the drinks upstairs passing Sunny Side and Promenade on the way up.He cleared the hallway into the dining room and nodded at Moonlet. Moonlet nodded back and he walked over. “Cherry made this for you and told me to apologize.” Nightfall said. “Not even going to pretend it’s your idea?” Moonlet said. “Thought about it… but how would I know about the Moonlet Lullaby.” Nightfall said sliding one over to her. “Fair enough.” Moonlet said. “So I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have snapped at you.” “Don’t apologize… that’s my job.” NIghtfall said with a smile. “Which i’m gonna do now. With this.” Nightfall added sliding the pamphlet over to her. “The lantern festival? Did Cherry set you up for this too?” Moonlet asked. “You know! It doesn’t matter. I think it’ll be a great time despite how things work out so let’s live in the moment. I’ll go with you.” Moonlet continued. Nightfall remained silent as he had not expected such a welcoming response. “What’s the matter captain. The Lullaby got you sleepy that quickly?” Moonlet asked gently nudging his shoulder before leaning her head on his shoulder. > Ch 12 Sunny Side Up > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sunny Side had been lost in the electronic swing that Cherry Tune had been blasting at the DJ booth. She remembered her parents would dance with her at a dance studio after school to this very same music style. Sunny caught a glimpse of Promenade rushing outside to the balcony. Cherry, Sapphire and the others also noticed but before they could react Sunny motioned to them that it’s alright and she’d go look after Promenade. “Thanks for looking out for me….again. The two mares drink their waters largely in silence. Promenade had been looking out the moonlit lake and Sunny sat by her side. After they finish their waters they head back in. Cherry Tune had been booed off stage for trying to play her banjo while Octavia, Vinyl, Bon Bon, and Lyra tried to coral her. Cherry leaped from the stage and fell flat on her face. Well I certainly worked up an appetite after all that dancing.” Sunny said. The two mares join the group and head to the fourth floor to their dinner reservations. The music was still thumping from below and it played in the dining room but at low enough levels so that conversations could take place. While the group chatted a bit most of the table was absolutely famished and focused on the food and desserts. Group by group finished and headed back down stairs. Sapphire Spark and Vernal Bloom headed back down to their table. Moonlet, Nightfall, Cherry Tune, and Sugar Cloud sat at the bar to continue their “competition” and the rest slowly made their back down to the dance floor. Sunny Side walked over to Sapphire Spark and Vernal Bloom. “Hey there Spark!” She said. “Hey boss!” Sapphire replied with a smile. “I thought Nightfall was your boss?” Vernal asked. “They both are! That’s how the guard works, every officer is your boss.” Sapphire said. “Oh nonsense Sapphire, we’re more friends than guard members at this point.” Sunny replied. “I never thought you of all captains would say something like that Sunny!” Sapphire said surprised. “Eh, I’m hard at work cause I have to be. AND I trust that should rank play a part of our duties you’d have no trouble with it at all.” Sunny explained. “Now I have not had the chance to meet your friend. Dinner was quite busy with everyone there.” She continued. “Oh! This is Vernal Bloom, she’s a perfumist here in Canterlot.” Sapphire said. “Hiya Sunny! I gotta say Saph, this one is way less stiff than ol’ Night over there.” Vernal said. “Oh heheh, yup, still my boss!” Sapphire muttered. Sunny gave a boisterous laugh. “Oh sorry but I know what you mean Vernal. Poor guy means well, just doesn’t know how to do the whole social interaction thing.” Sunny said. “Well I gotta go check on Promenade and get me another drink, you two have fun.” she added. “Sure thing! Oh if you’re headed over to Sugar Could you let her know I’m gonna crash at Vernal’s place for the night?” Sapphire asked. “Absolutely!” Sunny said. Sunny walks over to Sugar Cloud who was attending to the bar. “Hey Sugar, mind if I get a drink?” Sunny asked. “Of course my dear! What would you like?” Sugar asked. “Surprise me!” Sunny replied. “Also Sapphire is going to crash at Vernal’s place tonight, she wanted you to know. “ She added. “Psssshhh I already knew that from the moment I met Vernal.” Sugar said. “Here ya go! Pineapple, coconut and rum. Reminds of the sunny beaches near mount Eris, so naturally I thought of you!”  She continued. “Ooh I am familiar with this one! That’s perfect! Thanks Sugar!” Sunny said. I’m going to check up on Promenade.” She continued. “I think she’s doing just fine Sunny!” Sugar smiled and pointed to the dance floor. Promenade was on the dance floor and the music changed from the heavy metal prior to dinner, to a pop dance genre. Promenade had performed ballet, swing, tap, salsa, waltz, and many other dance forms on stage and Sunny was not surprised when she noticed the talented pegasus flowing with the sensuality of the music with her eyes closed, only briefly opening to check her surroundings. Sunny also noticed that, though creatures were on every side of her on the dance floor, she seemed to be performing for someone though Sunny did not see who. Promenade opened her eyes and made eye contact with Sunny who was sipping her pineapple drink. Promenade smiled and gave a sensual twirl as the song reached its end. A few creatures who were also watching Promenade gave her cheers and whistles as she walked off the dance floor towards Sunny. The music picked up again and the creatures returned to their night. Promenade motioned to a table and Sunny joined her. “That was pretty amazing Promenade. If you dance as well as that I can only imagine the talent you brought in the reservists corp.” Sunny said. “Oh yeah…. Never quite a fast enough flier to be honest.” Promenade said. “What’s that you got there?” she asked Sunny. “Oh something Sugar made, wanna try?” Sunny asked. “Sure!” Promenade replied happily. “That’s pretty good!” she continued. Promenade motioned to a waitress and ordered the same thing. Sunny polished off hers before the waitress left and ordered one for herself too. “So, what do you think about Moonlet and Nightfall?” Promenade asked. “Oh, what do you know about that situation?” Sunny replied. “Well I’ve seen it before while I was in, so I know it can’t be easy. And if I can notice it and I don’t even work with them. Then others certainly noticed too.” Promenade explained. “Well normally, as a captain. I’d be against it but as you said. So many have noticed and yet any rumors or discussions about them only seem to be supportive so….. Yeah.” Sunny said. “And you and I both know the code of guard explicit orders against this but I can’t see how such an archaic law holds up in our modern society so I let it go.” she added. Promenade smiled saying under breath, “That’s what I told them.” Just then their drinks arrive and Sunny Side takes a sip as does Promenade. “Now that’s refreshing, I could drink this all night!” Promenade said. “Oh me too! Cheers” Sunny replied. Sunny and Promenade continue the conversation and each time one would finish their drink the other would chug the remainder of theirs so they could both order another at the same time. Sunny lost track of how many she had and in doing so lost track of Promenade but both mares seemed well enough and enjoyed the pineapple beverages. “Excuse me... one moment… my friend. I gotta use the restroom, I’ll be back.” Sunny struggled to say. “Mhmm, you go do that!” Promenade said with a smile laying her head down on the table. “Don’t go passin’ out on me now! I’ll be quick!” Sunny said. She heads to the restrooms and relieves the torrent of liquid she’d been drinking. “Oooh yeaahhh.  That’s... what I’m talkin’ about.” Sunny said finishing with a moan. “Whoa girl! Those are some noise comin’ outta there!” another creature said from a different stall. “Oh, Haha! Sorry about that!” Sunny replied blushing. Sunny finishes, washes her hooves and heads back out to Promenade. For a split second Sunny panicked as Promenade wasn’t at the table she left her at. “Oh no… Where’d you go silly mare?” Sunny said to herself. Sunny scanned the club and saw Promenade at the bar with Cherry and Sugar. They had given her a glass of water and were keeping her entertained. Though Promenade was rather tired, and the drinks were hitting her, she managed to stay conscious. “My my, what a trooper!” Sunny said waking over. “Hey Sunny!” Cherry said. “Hey Cherry, everything good over here?” Sunny asked motioning to Promenade. “Sunny you gotta stop worrying so much! Promenade is handling the night like a champ!” Sugar said. Sunny was not reassured by the statement but saw Promenade looking up at her with a warm smile. “Yeah, Sunny, you’re always there for me but remember I’ve been doing this alone for a long time!” Promenade said. Though she hadn’t meant anything by it. Cherry, Sugar, and Sunny all picked up on something Promenade hadn’t meant to share. “That’s right ol’ girl, you and me got this together.” Sunny said to reassure Cherry and Sugar. “Hey Cherry, can you make me a drink?” Promenade asked. “Umm…” Cherry thought about it and though she knew that Promenade likely had enough for the night she obliged but not without a plan.   “I don’t think that is a good idea Promenade.” Sunny said. But before Promenade could respond against Sunny’s suggestion Cherry said, “I got just the drink for you Prom!” Being sure to give a nod to Sunny. “It’ll perfect for you!” Cherry added. Sunny frowned but nodded back saying, “And two waters.” Cherry mixed up the Moonlet Lullaby and slid it over to Promenade. “Wow, this is so pleasant Cherry! Thank you!” Promenade said. “Anytime!” Cherry replied. “Okay, let’s go upstairs and grab a few snacks, I’m a little hungry.” Sunny said intending to distract Promenade from the drinks and also to get food in Promenades system. “Oh my, that’d be great! I’m craving those nachos from earlier right now!” Promenade said overly excited. Sunny and Promenade head up stairs to their original table and Sunny orders the nachos. Promenade slowly picks at the dish trying to keep her head off the table. “So a good night dear?” Sunny asked. With nachos in mouth, Promenade grabs Sunny’s hoof pulling her in a half hug saying. “Most definitely! Thank you for pushing me to come out tonight!” “Heheh, no problem.” Sunny replied. Just then Moonlet stomped upstairs looked straight at Sunny and sat down next to her. “Hey girl!” Promenade said. “Oh, Um... hey Promenade…” Moonlet said. “What’s wrong sweety? Nightfall being dumb?” Promenade replied. “Promenade! You can’t just ask that!” Sunny said. “But yeah, Nightfall being dumb again?” she added. “.... nah it’s cool. But yeah he is… but not because he doesn’t care.” Moonlet said. “He cares too much…about everything” she continued. “Ah the code of guard. Tricky little peace of law that just doesn’t make sense.” Promenade said. “Look… Moonlet, you just gotta live in the moment, live for what you think is right.”  Sunny said. “Ya know, with caution of course!” “Aww, way to ruin a good moment Sunny” Promenade said. “No Moonlet, you take what you feel for Nightfall and you enjoy every moment you can until you are told not to.” She continued in a serious tone. “At the risk of sounding irresponsible. Promenade is right. For the most part.” Sunny said “Take that chance and be happy you tried!” she added. Moonlet was slightly taken back by Sunny’s comment as Sunny was also a captain and knew very well the code of guard. Moonlet contemplated the implications of her actions should she act on them. And while the thought of repercussions lingered, she made up her mind. “Well Moonlet, I think I’m going to take Promenade home for the night!” Sunny said trying to pull a passed out Promenade unto her back. Promenade held on as best she could and snuggled the back of Sunny’s neck. “Y’all two going to be ok?” Moonlet said. “Yeah, I know I had a lot but I think she had way more. Besides, I can handle my intake!” Sunny said. “Hey, I hope it works out for you two. Have a good night.” she continued. “Yeah, me too. I’ll send an emberlight to your place. Just press it to let me know you’ve made it safe.” Moonlet said. Sunny carried Promenade down stairs passing by Nightfall. She gave him a nod and he returned the gesture. Sunny made it to the first floor and headed for the train station. Two off duty guard captains who also reside in Ponyville bump into Sunny and Promenade en route to the station. “Oh hey Sunny!” Water Lily said catching up to Sunny. “Wow you two sure look like you had a good time.” Full Throttle said walking alongside them. “Oh my, well this is awkward!” Sunny said. “Yeah I may have gotten carried away tonight.” she added. “That’s alright Full Throttle and I were just headed home from Light and Sound. The third and fourth floors were apparently booked!” Water Lily said. “Sounded like a bangin’ party! Wish I could have made it the list!” Full Throttle chimed in. “Oh.. this is even more awkward. That was for my friend here.” Sunny said motioning to her back. “It was for her birthday, and her friends kinda went all out. I hadn’t thought to invite you two, sorry about that.” she continued. “Oh no problem! Some of the performers came down stares and mingled with the usual crowd!” Full Throttle said. “Yeah, Velvet Remedy is super chill!” Lily added. “I am glad y’all had a good night! But don’t you have work tomorrow Throttle?” Sunny asked. “Pssh I can get four hours of sleep and still be wide awake. That’s why they call me Full Throttle yo!” he said. “Oh fair enough.” Sunny smiled. The group board the train and arrive at Ponyville. The trip seemed a blink of an eye as Sunny struggled to stay awake, and while Promenade was already passed out. “Hey We’re going to walk you two home.” Throttle said. “Yeah, y’all looked so adorable passin’ out in the train car together but I think it best we help you to your place Sunny.” Lily said. “Oh thank you guys.” Sunny said too exhausted to refuse the help. Lily carried Promenade while Throttle helped with Sunny. They arrive at the Barn and Stable and Sunny takes Promenade off of Lily. “You gonna make it hun?” Lily asked. “You two got us home! I think I can manage from here. Thanks again you two!” Sunny said. “Any time friend! Sleep well and come find us in the morning if it gets... too rough!” Throttle said with a chuckle. “Will do!” Sunny replied. She closed the door and walked over to the counter where Moonlet’s emberlight gently flickered. She placed her hoof on it and it flashed and flew off. Sunny then carried Promenade to her bed but when Sunny goes to move away Promenade holds on to Sunny and asks her not to leave. Sunny obliges and lies next to her while Promenade held on to Sunny’s back. Promenade nuzzles the back of Sunny’s neck as she falls asleep and Sunny soon after. > Ch 13 Aurora Mane > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sunny Side rolled out of bed in the morning and left Promenades room gently closing the door behind her. Meryl had been awake much earlier and was taking care of customers checking out of the Barn and Stable. “Morning sis!” Meryl said as Sunny walked down the stairs. “Good morning Meryl. How was Apple Blooms party?” Sunny asked, clearly hungover.  “It was awesome! Apple Jack managed to get Rara to come sing for the whole school!” Meryl said excitedly. “How about you? You don’t look so good.” she continued. “It went as awesome as your party! I just got a little carried away!” Sunny said. “Hey thanks for taking over the counter this morning. Think you can handle it while I make some breakfast?” she asked. “Sure thing! It’s not the first time I had to do this! I kinda miss it actually. Since Promenade has been taking over!” Meryl said. “I know you enjoyed working the counter but your school was more important.” Sunny said. “I know, I know! And I like being able to go! I just liked helping you out every now and then.” Meryl said. “Well aren’t you the sweetest wittle sister!” Sunny replied while hugging and snuggling Meryl. “Alright that’s enough, customers are coming, and you said you were making breakfast!” Meryl giggled struggling to get away. “Okie, same ol’ same ol’ for you?” Sunny asked. “Yes please!” Meryl replied. Sunny prepared some beans, eggs, and buttered toast. She places some strawberry jam on the table and makes a few extra pieces of toast. After she set up the rest of the table she calls to Meryl, “It’s ready!”  “Okay! It’ll be a moment, signing out our last guest!” Meryl shouted back.  Meryl checked out the guests and put a busy sign at the counter before heading to the breakfast table. Sunny and Meryl were rather quick to finish their food and begin to clean up. By noon they had cleaned all the quest rooms, the lobby, the public dining area and the front and back lounge areas. Promenade was still knocked when Sunny had begun preparing lunch. She deliberately anticipated Promenade to be in much need of a hearty vegetable soup. Sunny had cooked up enough for new guests who were going to check in and stored enough for Meryl, Promenade and herself.  “Are we going to wait for Promenade?” Meryl asked. “She missed breakfast this morning too.” Meryl added. “She’ll be alright, she got far more carried away than I did, I think she just needs to sleep it off. Although I am going to check on her. Been busy this morning.” Sunny said. “Go ahead without me, I won’t be long!” She continued. Sunny walked up stairs to Promenades room and gently opened the door. Promenade had sprawled out over the whole king sized bed. “Wow, certainly can take a whole lot of space for a little pony.” Sunny said. Sunny placed a glass of water and a pitcher on the night stand then closed the door behind her as she left. She went back down to finish lunch with Meryl. While Promenade’s door was open the smell of food wafted in. Though it did not immediately wake Promenade up, about half an hour later the smell lingered and Promenade began to stir. “Oh, Celestia…. What time is it?” Promenade mumbled crawling to the edge of the bed. She saw the glass of water and drank the entirety of it. Refilling the glass with what was in the pitcher and finishing about half the second glass. She gasped for air and placed the glass on the nightstand. She slumped out of bed dragging the blanket with her.  Promenade walked down stairs the blanket covering her head and body and she made her way to the dinner table. “Hey sweepy head!” Meryl said. “Hey Meryl.” Promenade said with a smile. Her head resting on the table while only her muzzle stuck out.  “Sunny made some soup for you! I left it on the burner so it wouldn't get cold. I’ll go get it for you!” Meryl said. “Thank Meryl.” Promenade said.  “Well well well, look who decided to get up!” Sunny said coming in from the back door. “How ya feeling hun?” She continued. “I’m fine, just a little hungover that’s all.” Promenade said shifting her muzzle to the sound of Sunny’s voice. “Well good thing it’s our weekend otherwise you’d have to fend for yourself!” Sunny said.  “Yup! But since we’re here we’ll get you feeling better in no time!” Meryl said bringing over a bowl of minestrone. Promenade slipped off the covers from her head and grabbed a spoon. She gently sipped at the warm vegetable broth taking small bites of the potatoes that she fished out. The nutritious nectar brought back life to Promenade and that evening she was feeling well enough to tend to guests as they were checking in.  During this rare moment where Sunny, Meryl, and Promenade had time to spend a weekend together Promenade hadn’t thought about visiting Canterlot as she wasn’t performing. That also meant she hadn’t visited the orphanage during this time period. Unbeknownst to her, a new filly had been placed into the orphanage. It was a day after Promenades birthday and rain had been forecast throughout Equestria. That evening a strange older unicorn draped in robes carried a half asleep filly to the orphanages doors. She rubbed her eyes as she woke from her sleep and asked, “hey where, where are we?”. “Don’t worry young Aurora, you’re parents said they will come pick you up in an hour. We’re dropping you off at daycare.” the old stallion said. “Now put on your boots and raincoat and head in side.” he continued. Aurora still half asleep, slowly put on her coat and boots and the old stallion put her down on the sidewalk outside the orphanage. He placed a book-bag with a few supplies and her teddy bear next to her. “Now go on inside before you catch a cold young lady.” the old stallion said. Aurora looked behind her she couldn’t make out the name of the daycare as it was getting dark and the rain was heavy. When she turned around the robed stallion was gone. The violet pegasus with a purple mane with blue-ish green streaks that shimmered in low light sat there, confused, drowsy, and unsure of where she was. She waited for about half an hour before knocking on the door to what she thought was a daycare.  A young mare opened the door and immediately knew that filly had been left there. “Hello, my mum and dad said they’ll pick me up in an hour but it’s a little cold out here. Can I come in please?” Aurora said looking up at the heartbroken mare. “Sure thing sweety, come inside we’ll make you some hot cocoa.  A few days had passed since Aurora’s arrival, Sunny had been back on her schedule, and Promenade was tending to the Barn and Stable and Meryl was heading home from school. Meryl bust through the front door. “Hey Miss Promenade!” she said. “Hi Meryl! How was school?” Promenade replied. “It was awesome! I made a hundred on all my tests!” Meryl said. “That’s fantastic! Looks like your study group is helping out!” Promenade said. “Please! I’m helping them out more!” Meryl bragged. “Alright, alright go clean up and let’s start making dinner.” Promenade said. “Okie!” Meryl said. Promenade closed the front desk for a moment while she and Meryl cook dinner. Sunny was on her way home. “So I have an early show tonight so I’ll have to leave as soon as your sister gets back.” Promenade said. “Are you going to eat? I can pack you some to go!” Meryl replied. “Uhm, yeah, some to go sounds good! I’ll have a little break between performances.” Promenade said. “Sure thing!” Meryl said. “Hey girls!” Sunny said as she walked into the kitchen. “Hi sis!” Meryl said jumping on Sunny. “Hey Sunny! I gotta go to an early show tonight. I’ll might be home late as well.” Promenade said. “Sure thing hun!” Sunny said. “Don’t forget your to go pack!” Meryl said. “Thank you sweety.” Promenade said giving Meryl a hug. “Okay I gotta go! See you guys later!” she continued heading out. Promenade heads to the Canterlot theatre meeting up with Octavia and Lyra as usual. Promenade’s troupe had become so popular they had back to back showings. Even then some creatures bought two tickets for the early showing and late showing. Between shows Promenade at her packed dinner and planned out her route back to Ponyville with a stop to the orphanage en route. Naturally she stopped by the book store who kept late hours specifically for Promenade as well as the toy store who had a similar schedule for her.  After her last act she spoke to the manager and asked if she could get her pay a little early to accommodate the store keepers schedules. He agreed and let her go before curtain call. She purchased all the usual toys picking out particular books and plushies that suited the children she knew and head over to the orphanage. Promenade greets the head of the orphanage who tells her that a new filly had arrived in the last couple of days. Promenade is lead to the play room where most of the children stayed for the evenings. Aurora sat alone by the window looking out at the city. Promenade instantly felt a familiar feeling when she looked at her. At that very moment Aurora looked over as if she knew Promenade was at the door. Promenade entered the room and greeted all the young foals and gave out her gifts as she’d always done. She eventually made her way to Aurora pulling up a chair and sitting next to her.  “Hi. I understand you are… that you...” Promenade never had an issue with new foals but stumbled this time. “Abandoned? Left alone, rejected by my…” Aurora teared up. “My mum… and dad..” She continued. Promenade couldn’t do anything for the little filly as she reminded her of herself when she was left at the same orphanage. “I’m sorry. I…“ She thought for a moment. “I am Promenade. What’s your name?” She said. Aurora frowned but felt something familiar with Promenade. “I’m... my names Aurora Mane.”  The two looked each other over as the talked. Their mane and tales, not to mention color were almost identical. Aurora had much more green in her mane than Promenade but beyond that the two could have been related.  Aurora was still very scared and upset so not a lot was learned from that initial conversation. Promenade took a special interest in Aurora because like her, Aurora was abandoned in much the same way, albeit Aurora was a few years older then Promenade when she was abandoned.   Promenade could hardly remember her parents only that they were unicorns because she remembered how their horns would glow a beautiful hue of orange and gold, and that particular memory filled her with happiness. She does remember not going to school or leaving the house. Promenade made an effort to see the orphanage more than just after her dances and she and Aurora became close. Aurora never spoke about her parents and Promenade never pushed the issue. She did take a liking to Promenade and would almost allow herself to be happy when she was around.
