> Sunset Shimmer's Sick Day > by CapNTilfy > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- > The Night Before > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- "I'm heading out!" Sunset called over to her boss. Another day done and over, she thought to herself. Today had been an unusually busy day. Maybe Rarity decided that the next big thing was sushi and I missed her on-trend report. She punched out then changed from her work uniform into her regular clothes and left the restaurant. The mall was empty, save for a few people closing up shop and patrons who were just leaving. In the distance, the music of Sapphire Shores was playing. The Crystal Rainbooms' Dance Magic music video had had its run in the mall and was just recently replaced. That didn't stop Rainbow Dash from convincing the staff to let her keep it so she could talk about it and show it at parties. Sunset made her way out of the mall and towards the parking lot. She breathed in the fresh air, glad to be away from the smell of fish and seaweed. Thank Celestia those scents haven't permeated my clothes and skin. Her thoughts were interrupted by a car's horn being honked. She snapped out of it and spotted a white and lavender compact car adorned with flowers a few feet away from her. "Thanks for picking me up, Fluttershy." Sunset said as she got in the car and buckled up. Fluttershy looked at Sunset with a warm smile on her face. "Happy to help!" She said, and started the car up. The two friends sat in companionable silence for a few moments, then Fluttershy spoke. "So...how was work?" She asked. Sunset sighed. "Way busier than I'm used to. I get the feeling I'm going to sleep well tonight." Fluttershy giggled. "Oh, I know that feeling." she replied. "Sometimes I have to work with an unruly dog, or a poor kitty that's scared half to death because it's not in an environment it recognizes." She frowned. "I always feel bad for the poor dears, so I treat them as gently as possible." Sunset gave Fluttershy a sympathetic look, then her smile returned. "Seeing the animals and their owners happy makes it all worthwhile." she said. Sunset nodded in agreement. A few minutes later, they arrived at Sunset's apartment. Sunset unbuckled her seatbelt and got out of the car. "Thanks again for the ride!" Sunset said. Fluttershy smiled. "Don't mention it." She said, and drove away. Opening the door to her apartment, Sunset breathed a sigh of relief. "Ahh, good to finally be home." She said to herself as she turned on the lights."And how's my little ray of sunshine?" She asked as she made her way to Ray's cage. Ray looked up at Sunset and gave her what she assumed was the reptilian equivalent of a smile. She fed him his dinner and headed towards the bathroom. After running the shower water and stripping all of her clothes off, she entered and let her thoughts drift as the hot water fell on her body. Things just seem to get better and better, she thought to herself with a smile. I have many amazing friends, CHS finally understands that I've changed, and I even reconciled with Princess Celestia! The incident with the Memory Stone still fresh in her mind, she grabbed a washcloth and lathered it up with soap. Me, Twilight Sparkle, Gloriosa Daisy, Juniper Montage and most recently Wallflower Blush...huh. I wonder why a male from this world hasn't tried to wield Equestrian Magic? Eh, I'm probably thinking too hard. I know I told Starlight that I wouldn't obsess over future threats, but that doesn't mean I don't want to be prepared. She finished scrubbing and rinsing her body off and began to get her hair wet. At least I have tomorrow off. I could use some relaxation and an uneventful day. Her eyes shot open as she had a realization. And I probably just tempted fate there. She rolled her eyes as she grabbed some shampoo and scrubbed away. Take things as they come, Sunset. Take things as they come. Finished, she shut off the water and dried herself off. Climbing up the stairs to get to her bed, Sunset made a mental note to ask Applejack to install a guard rail. Even though she had lived there for years, Sunset didn't feel entirely safe walking up and down them. As she passed each of the guitars that she hung on the wall, she ran her fingers through the strings, strumming a chord on them as she ascended. "Ahh, music to my ears." She said with a smile on her face. As she reached the top of the stairs, Sunset checked her alarm clock to make sure it wouldn't go off unexpectedly. Many times it had startled her awake on her days off, and once she even threw it down the stairs as hard as she could. It was nothing short of a miracle that the clock stayed intact. Satisfied, she went to her dresser, put on her pajamas and laid in bed. She stared up at the ceiling, enjoying the silence after her busy day. Every now and then a car would pass by, but Sunset didn't mind. A little background noise was just fine. After a few minutes, she yawned and stretched. Feeling her eyelids get heavy, she turned off the lights and slowly drifted off to sleep. Sunset suddenly found herself sitting at a small table in a room that seemed to be a fusion of her classroom from Magic Kindergarten back in Equestria and Principal Celestia's office from Canterlot High.Confused, she blinked. "What the-" She cut herself off. "Oh right, this is a dream." She felt someone tap her shoulder. Nearly startled out of her chair, Sunset turned to see both Princess Celestia and Principal Celestia. Before Sunset had time to process what she was seeing, she snapped awake. "What in the hell..." Sunset looked at her clock. It read 1:15. She sighed and rolled her eyes. "Why do all the good dreams end so-" Before she could say another word, an almost overwhelming wave of nausea hit her. > Rude Awakenings > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Oh, crap. Sunset thought. Oh crap oh crap. She immediately made a break for the stairs, almost tripping and falling face-first onto the landing between both sets of stairs. She cursed to herself, regained her footing, and ran to the bathroom. A few minutes later, Sunset exited the bathroom. "I don't care if it's the cause or not, I'm not eating sushi again for a long time." She groaned. Not willing to take any chances, she made her way to the couch and laid down. I just had to tempt fate. Go figure. She sighed and stretched as she heard another car go by. At least I didn't have any big plans for the day. "Just to be on the safe side, though..." Sunset said as she got up and walked toward her mini-fridge. She opened it up and took out a bottle of ginger ale and poured herself a cup. She downed the drink and put the ginger ale back in the mini-fridge. Getting back onto the couch, she laid down and tried to go back to sleep. Nearly asleep, she felt nauseous and ran back to the bathroom. Once finished, she sighed. "So it's going to be one those nights, huh?" She sat on the couch and stared at her television for a moment, the power off. She almost turned it on, but decided against it. If I'm going to be sick, I might as well try to get all the rest I can, She thought. Laying on the couch, she closed her eyes and reflected on her first day in this world. I was so frightened and confused...and alone. I had to go into hiding to avoid humans because they were so alien to me. I was actually considering returning to Equestria just so I wouldn't be alone. I'll never forget that night...because as I was about to enter the portal I saw Celestia. Not Princess Celestia, but a human that greatly resembled her. All the negative memories I had came rushing back and I went back to my plan for vengeance. That last thought made her gut feel a tinge of guilt. Well, at least I'm not as guilt-ridden as I used to be. When the girls hit me with their magic, I had seen a reflection of myself. The worst kind of reflection. It showed me what I monster I had become, both literally and metaphorically. I'll always be grateful for Princess Twilight and the girls' willingness to give me a second chance. I had finally felt that I had proven myself in the Battle of the Bands. Thanks to my friends, I was able to shed my self-doubt and together we stood up to defeat the sirens. I even became a member of the Rainbooms after showing them my guitar skills. Then came the Friendship Games. With all of the magical craziness going around, I felt powerless and my guilt came back. It was only afterwards that I realized I shouldn't carry the burden alone. She smirked. I'll never forget that moment when Princess Twilight and this world's Twilight came face-to-face. That was one of the most awkward silences I've ever had to witness. We've all seven of us been through a lot, and I imagine much more is still to come, she thought. She felt her eyelids get heavy again and laid on the couch. Stretching and yawning, she closed her eyes in hopes of getting at least some decent rest. It would be a couple more hours before she would get sick again. "Okay, so sleep's probably not going to happen." She grumbled, exiting the bathroom again. Maybe I should just sleep next to the toilet at this point. She sarcastically thought to herself. Feeling defeated for the moment, she walked over to her desk and started drawing a picture of herself. Art had always been a passion for Sunset Shimmer. Ever since she saw an art exhibit in Vanhoover as a filly, she had become inspired by a painting of the sun being raised by Princess Celestia. The bright and vivid colors, the emotions she felt as she stared at it, and the passion she could feel from the painting had inspired her to take up art as a hobby. I wonder if all of my paintings are still in Equestria? She stroked her chin thoughtfully. I'd love to show it to the girls. Finished with her sketch, she put it in a folder and into a compartment under her desk. She walked up the stairs to her bed, and grabbed one the guitars hanging on the wall. She went back down to the couch and started to strum on it. Playing guitar didn't come easy to her at first, but she was a fairly quick learner. Once she got the hang of it, she started playing out in the street while looking for work opportunities. She was just struggling to make ends meet. She had to sell some paintings just to get by. Deciding she was finished, Sunset put the guitar back in its proper place. She then turned on the television and her gaming console. Putting on headphones so she wouldn't disturb her neighbors, Sunset inserted "Tirek's Revenge" and went for the solo campaign. Originally, she wanted nothing to do with video games. Eventually she changed her mind and saw them as a way to become popular to achieve her goals. After her reformation, she became more sociable and played online multiplayer with her friends and others. Feeling her eyelids get heavy yet again, she turned off the console and TV. Better be more than two freakin' hours this time. Her patience was wearing thin. She laid back on the couch and slowly felt sleep overtake her. She was having the same dream as before, but again, before anyone could speak, she was woken up. Not by nausea, but this time by her phone. She snapped awake and answered it. "Princessipal Celestia, is that you?" She all but slurred the words like a drunkard. She was answered with high-pitched laughter. After a moment, the laughter stopped. "Princessipal Celestia...that's a good one, SunShim!" Fully awake and alert, Sunset recognized the familiar voice. "Pinkie?" > Pinkie Pie's Positively Perfect Plan > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- "Yupperooni!" Pinkie Pie cheerfully said. Her tone then changed to that of concern. "Sunset, are you okay? You don't sound like yourself." Sunset sighed. "Well, I have been puking my guts out throughout the night." Sunset said as she rolled her eyes. Pinkie made a sound of disgust and then said "Aww, being sick is no fun." Sunset rolled her eyes again. "Tell me about it, Pinkie. I feel like I got ran over by a bus being driven by Granny Smith. But enough about me, what's up?" Pinkie went back to her cheerful tone. "Fluttershy told me that you had a crazy busy day at work last night, and I just wanted to check in and see how you were doing." Sunset could have sworn she heard a something that sounded like a squeaky toy punctuating that sentence, but she chalked it up to her fever. "Hey, I have an idea! Why don't me, Twilight, Rarity, Fluttershy, Rainbow Dash and Applejack all come over to visit? I'd have to go over their schedules with each of them, I know they have things lined up today. Buuut I know that all of us can take time out of our day to hang out with you!" Sunset again thought she heard a strange squeaking noise, but she just decided that it was Pinkie being Pinkie. Sunset smiled. "You know what, Pinkie? That sounds great. I could use the company." Pinkie squealed in delight and said "Okie-dokie-lokie! Let me just check in with each one of them. I'm sure we'll all figure something out! Talk to you later!" Pinkie hung up. Sunset got up off of the couch, stretching and yawning. I may be under the weather, she thought, but that doesn't mean I have to spend all day in my PJs. She walked up to her bed and changed her clothes. After she was finished, she texted Pinkie. "When you get a hold of AJ, tell her I need a guard rail for the stairs to my bed. It's kind of a safety hazard. I almost got injured last night sprinting to the bathroom!" Ugh, I hate being sick. I haven't felt this bad since I first ate human food. She shuddered at the memory. I nearly died of starvation before my body got used to it. Nothing seemed to be able to stay down. Even the hay here tastes different than it does in Equestria. Sunset sighed and walked back down the stairs, thankful that she wasn't in a hurry this time. By the time she reached the bottom of the stairs, Pinkie had texted her back. "You got it!" About an hour later, Sunset's phone rang. It was Pinkie again. She hit the answer button. "Hiya!" Pinkie said. "Hey, Pinkie." Sunset said wearily. "Okay, here's what everyone's got going on today. Rarity and AJ are working right now. I'm actually babysitting Lily Pad again, covering for Rarity. Twilight has work too, then a date with Timber Spruce a little later. Fluttershy is volunteering a little later today, and I might have accidentally cut Rainbow Dash's nap short." Pinkie laughed a little. "Dashie was a little grumpy when I woke her up, but when I told her you were sick she said she's up for a video game smackdown or two with you. Rarity's shift is almost over, so she'll be first. I'll be next, because after she sees you she'll pick Lily up and then it'll be my turn! Applejack should be next since she'll need to grab her toolbox after she finishes at the Aunt Orange smoothie stand. Fluttershy should be done with her volunteering by the time Applejack finishes with the railing for your stairs. Rainbow Dash will be next, and by then Twilight and Timber Spruce's date should be over! This way you know who to expect and when to expect them, and the readers will too!" Sunset blinked. "Umm...what?" Pinkie Pie giggled. "Don't worry, silly! Everything's going to be fine!" Sunset blinked again, then thought to herself that it was just Pinkie Pie being Pinkie Pie. Questioning such things only furthers confusion. "Sounds like a plan, Pinkie!" Sunset said, now recovered from said confusion. "Great!" Said Pinkie. "I should call it 'Pinkie Pie's Positively Perfect Plan'! It's the name of chapter, after all!" Sunset opened her mouth as if about to say something, then shut it. Rolling her eyes but smiling, she said "If you say so." Pinkie made a high-pitched squeal and said "This is gonna be so much fun! See you soon!" "Yeah!" Said Sunset. "See you soon." She hung up and stared out the window closest to the entrance, watching the world outside. It really is a beautiful day. Sucks that I have to be sick. Suddenly, her phone buzzed, snapping Sunset out of her thoughts. It was a text from Rarity. I'll be running a bit behind, darling. I need to pick something up. Won't be too long. See you soon! - Sent by Rarity Sunset smiled and responded. No worries, Rarity. Take your time. - Sent by Sunset Shimmer Thanks for understanding, dear. - Sent by Rarity Sunset then put her phone back in one of her pockets. I wonder what she's getting? Sunset thought. Maybe she's making some kind of fashion line for the ill. She sarcastically thought. "Sick Couture" with the tagline "Just because you don't feel good doesn't mean you shouldn't look good." Her eyes brightened. Hey, that actually sounds kinda cool. I'll run that thought by her when she gets here. A few more minutes passed. Feeling tired, Sunset Shimmer slowly walked to her couch. Maybe I'll just try to grab a Z or two before she gets here. I could sure use it. Just as soon as she reached the couch, she heard a knock on the door. Getting up off the couch, she made her way toward the door. "Sunset? It's Rarity!" Sunset paused for a moment, realizing that something was off about Rarity's voice. Slowly and cautiously, she opened the door. With the door fully open, Sunset's jaw dropped. Suddenly, despite her best efforts, Sunset exploded into a laughing fit. > The Next Big Thing > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- There, standing in the doorway, was Rarity. Wearing a nearly skin-tight silk bodysuit colored white and purple with three blue diamonds on each leg. On her back was a backpack with an air filter, also colored white and purple with three blue diamonds in the center. On her head was a similarly colored helmet. "Surely you didn't expect me to be in one of those unsightly over-sized yellow hazmat suits? I custom made this myself with Twilight's science know-how. Made just in case any of my friends fall ill." She said with pride. Recovering from her laughing fit before it became a coughing fit, Sunset said "Rarity, it's just a bad fever. It's not like I have the plague." She wiped a tear from her eye. "Oh, pfft!" Scoffed Rarity. "You know how I feel about germs and icky things, darling." Sunset rolled her eyes. "Yes, I do. Thank you for the laugh, by the way. I really needed it." Suddenly, her face lit up. "Oh! I almost forgot! I had an idea shortly before you got here! How does this sound: Sick Couture! 'Just because you don't feel good doesn't mean you shouldn't look good!'" Rarity blinked, then looked deep in thought. "Hmm...I think you might be onto something, Sunset. Let's talk details!" As they spoke, Sunset found herself looking back at their history together. When Sunset first met her, she saw Rarity as little more than a snobbish overreacting drama queen with a severe aversion to dirt. However, after the Fall Formal, she saw her in a different light. While getting to know Rarity better, Sunset noticed they both had a passion for the creative arts. Once that commonality was noticed, the two hit it off quite quickly. Rarity with her passion for fashion, and Sunset with her passion for art. They both drew inspiration from each other when they showed each other their work. Suddenly, Sunset felt dizzy. "Whoa, what the-" Suddenly seeing her friend lose her balance, Rarity panicked, but almost immediately recovered from her shock. Channeling her geode, she summoned a large flat diamond for Sunset to land on safely. "Good heavens, darling, are you all right?! Do you need to lie down?" Rarity said, full of concern. "I...just got dizzy is all." Sunset said weakly. "I didn't exactly get a good night's sleep last night either, so that might have had something to do with it." Rarity lifted the flat diamond carrying Sunset onto the couch, then dissipated the diamond. She then put her hand on Sunset's forehead, forgetting in the moment that she was wearing a bodysuit. "Oh. Right." Rarity blushed in embarrassment, then walked over to the bathroom to grab a thermometer. Returning, she stuck it under Sunset's tongue. "I insist you get some rest, Sunset Shimmer. We can always talk about Sick Chic later." Rarity took out the thermometer. "Goodness, darling, you're burning up!" She sprinted to the bathroom again, grabbed a washcloth and soaked it in cold water. "Now you get some sleep, dear. I'll wake you up when I have to leave." Rarity said as she put the washcloth on Sunset's forehead. Sunset smiled. "Thanks, Rarity." She chuckled. "'Sick Chic' rolls off the tongue. Maybe we should call it that instead 'Sick Couture'. It could be the next...big..." Sunset trailed off as she drifted off to sleep. Having calmed down, Rarity took a breath and sighed. "I think I handled that rather well." Pulling out her phone, she texted an update to the others. I'm afraid she's feeling worse, dears. She had a dizzy spell and is burning up, but she's getting the rest she needs. - Sent by Rarity ---------------------------------------------- Opening her eyes, Sunset found herself back in the same dream with Princess Celestia and Principal Celestia. "Okay, something must be up if this dream is recurring." She stroked her chin. She looked at the two Celestias. "So I assume you two aren't going to say anything right now?" She was answered with silence. Sunset sighed. "Why am I not surprised?" Suddenly, the room started disappearing. Bit by bit, until it had completely vanished. Sunset and both Celestias were now outside. The sun was shining brightly. It shone brighter and brighter until Sunset had to shield her eyes. Once the sunlight started to dim, Sunset gawked at two new arrivals. Standing to her left was Rarity, wearing the new outfit she chose when all seven of them agreed to change outfits together. To her right was a white unicorn she only caught a glimpse of when she stole Princess Twilight's crown. "Both human Rarity and Equestrian Rarity?! Okay, I take it back. I'm surprised." Both of the Raritys looked at Sunset and said in unison "Is something the matter, darling?" --------------------------------------------- Rarity's phone buzzed. Well, that sucks. - Sent by Rainbow Dash Oh, dear. That's terrible news! - Sent by Fluttershy I'll bring a smoothie with me when I get there. - Sent by Applejack Major bummer! - Sent by Pinkie Pie Did you put a cold washcloth on her forehead? - Sent by Twilight Sparkle Yes, Twilight, I did. - Sent by Rarity Not bothering to wait for Twilight's response, Rarity started to clean Sunset's living room. At least this will be one less thing for her to worry about when she wakes up, she thought. When she finished, Rarity look at her phone. "Goodness!" She shouted. "I need to get going!" --------------------------------------------- Sunset stared at the two Raritys in disbelief. "Is something the matter? Yes, something is the matter! How is there a human Rarity and a Pony Rarity in the same place? I mean, I get this is a dream and everything, but-" before she could finish, Sunset was woken up. --------------------------------------------- "Rarree wass wrong?" Sunset slurred, slowly sitting up as the now mildly damp washcloth fell off of her forehead. "So sorry to wake you up, darling, but I must be going." Rarity said. Still half awake, Sunset said "Okay, I understand. I'll keep an ear out for Pinkie." Rarity gave her a look of concern. "Promise me you won't do anything to agitate your condition while you wait for her?" Sunset smiled softly. "I promise." Rarity gave Sunset a smile. "Okay, then. Drink plenty of fluids and stay rested!" Sunset nodded. "Don't worry, I will." Rarity exited Sunset's home and Sunset found herself alone with her thoughts. What was that all about? Recurring dreams always have significance to them... She slowly walked to the kitchen to get a glass of water. I hope this doesn't keep me up at night. I've lost enough sleep as it is. As she filled a glass with water, Sunset's phone buzzed. Incoming! - Sent by Pinkie Pie Sunset smiled to herself. At least hanging out with Pinkie will get my mind off things...for the time being. Sitting back on the couch, she took a drink of water. A few minutes later, Pinkie Pie burst through the door. "Iiiit's PARTY TIME! P-A-R-T. Y? Because I gotta!" > Stormy with A Side of Pinkie > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sunset smiled. "Hi, Pinkie." Pinkie grinned widely. "Guess what I brought!" She said in a singsong tone. Sunset rolled her eyes, but kept her smile. "Stormy with a Side of Pudding?" Pinkie frowned. "Awww, how did you know?" Sunset giggled. "Because after we stumbled upon the set for it you made all of us Pinkie Promise to watch it with you at some point." Pinkie laughed. "Oh, yeah! I forgot." She said as she closed the door. She then frowned again. "Sunset, are you sure you're up for watching this? Rarity told me and the girls about your little dizzy fall. If you need to get some rest, I totally understand. We could always watch it some other time." Sunset looked at Pinkie. "Well, we could just watch it now. If I happen to fall asleep during the movie we could always watch it again when I'm feeling better." Pinkie brightened up. "Okie-dokie-lokie!" She turned on Sunset's TV and switched to Blu-Ray. "Are you ready for the movie experience of a lifetime?!" Pinkie asked, visibly giddy. "Let's get to it." Said Sunset. As the opening credits rolled, Sunset looked at Pinkie and smiled. We've been through so much together... Pinkie saw Sunset's smile and blinked. "Wait, is this turning into a shipfic? I thought the blue tag said 'Slice of Life', not 'Romance!'" Sunset blinked. Pinkie blushed, clearly embarrassed. "Did I say that out loud?" Suddenly, realization dawned on her. "Ooooh. This the part where you reminisce about your history with me." She giggled nervously. "Totally misread the context there." Sunset stared at Pinkie, her mouth agape. Pinkie smiled. "Just forget I said that. It's just me being me, after all!" She giggled. In all the time Sunset had known Pinkie Pie, that was always the best way to explain her pink friend. Trying to figure her out would only lead to nothing but confusion and more confusion. Deciding that taking Pinkie's advice was the best course of action, she drifted back to her thoughts. We've been through so much together... After her first encounter with Pinkie, Sunset Shimmer only saw Pinkie Pie as an annoying, clingy attention whore with an obsession for parties and fun. However, in getting to know Pinkie better, she saw that while she could still be annoying at times, she would come to realize that Pinkie just wanted to see people smile. I still get uneasy around upbeat people, but thanks to Pinkie, I open up to that type a bit easier. Whenever Sunset was feeling sad, Pinkie would be there to cheer her up, and she would always appreciate it. Sunset brought her attention back to the movie. The opening credits had finished, and started with a person on the roof of a building. Pinkie Pie laughed. "Hey, this reminds me of the time you almost got in trouble with Principal Celestia for singing on the roof of Canterlot High!" Sunset blushed. She had been singing about her past at the time, but after she finished her song she turned around and bumped into Principal Celestia. "I still can't believe I forgot how early she gets to school. Her Equestrian counterpart raises the freaking sun, for crying out loud! I should have known in hindsight." Pinkie and Sunset laughed together. Sunset then got up slowly. Pinkie gave her sick friend a look of concern. "Sunset, why don't you stay on the couch? I'll dampen the washcloth for you. Wouldn't want you to feel any worse than you already do." Sunset smiled. "Thanks, Pinkie. I appreciate it." Pinkie smiled back. "You betcha!" She picked the washcloth up off of the couch and walked toward the kitchen sink. She then soaked it in cold water, wrung it out a little, then gave the washcloth to Sunset. "Here you go!" Pinkie said cheerfully. "Thanks. I don't know where I'd be without you and the other girls." Sunset said. "I don't think that's something either of us want to imagine." "Good point." Sunset said sleepily. She yawned. "I think I'll try to catch up on sleep, Pinkie." She put the cold, damp washcloth on her forehead. "Okie dokie lokie! I'll turn down the volume so you can sleep easier. I practically know the entire movie by heart!" "I wouldn't be surprised. Thanks again." "Nooooo problem!" Pinkie cheerfully said as Sunset closed her eyes. As Sunset slowly drifted off to sleep, Pinkie sent an update. Just sending a lil' update-a-roonie! No changes, good or bad. She's zonked out on the couch. - Sent by Pinkie Pie Well at least she's not feeling worse, darling! - Sent by Rarity Sometimes no news is good news. - Sent by Twilight Sparkle She'll need the rest, I won't hold back on her when we play! - Sent by Rainbow Dash That sounds promising! - Sent by Fluttershy My shift's over, I'll be there in a while. - Sent by Applejack ---------------------------------------------- Sunset found herself in the same field before she was woken up by Rarity. Both the human and Equestrian Celestias were still there, as well as both human and Equestrian Raritys. "Okay, I think I can see where this dream is going." Said Sunset. Suddenly, music started playing. Sunset heard singing in the distance. Following the sound, she came across human Pinkie Pie on a wrecking ball. "IIIIII. WANT TO SWING. ON THE CHANDELIER. ON THE CHANDELI-HEE-HEE-HEEEEEER!" she belted. Sunset's jaw dropped. Behind her, a voice said "Does she know she's singing the wrong song?" Sunset let out a startled yelp and jumped. Turning around, she saw a pink earth pony mare. The mane and cutie mark were unmistakable. "Pinkie Pie?" Equestrian Pinkie Pie smiled. "Eeyup! Oh, wait. Silly me, that's Big Mac's line!" She giggled. Sunset made a mental note to stop trying to predict the dream. Finished, the human Pinkie Pie leaped off the wrecking ball, flipping in midair and landed right next to her Equestrian counterpart. Without warning, Equestrian Pinkie Pie's teeth started chattering. Sunset looked at the pink mare with concern. "Are you okay?" She asked. Equestrian Pinkie Pie giggled. "I'm fine. It just means you're going to be woken up abruptly!" She happily said. Before Sunset could respond, she was abruptly woken up. ---------------------------------------------- Sunset woke up next to Pinkie Pie, who was in tears, bawling. "Oh my god, Pinkie, what happened?! Are you okay?" Sunset asked. Pinkie Pie sniffled. "I'm fine. I just...love...happy ENDINGS!" She resumed her crying. Sunset turned her head to the television to see the ending credits were running. She smiled and rolled her eyes. She hugged Pinkie to calm her down. "Thanks...I needed that." Pinkie said, wiping a tear from her eye. "Well, I should go. Applejack should be here any minute." Pinkie took out the Blu-Ray and put it back in its case. "We'll watch it together another day. Sorry I woke you up." Sunset smiled. "Don't worry about it. See you later!" "Bye, Sunset!" Never change, Pinkie Pie. Never change. Sunset thought to herself. A short while later, there was a knock on the door. "It's unlocked!" Said Sunset. Applejack opened the door, with a toolbox and guard rails in one hand and a bag with two smoothies in the other. "Howdy, Sugarcube!" she said. > Good for What Ails Ya > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- "Hey, AJ," Sunset said. Applejack walked over to Sunset and gave her a smoothie. "You been able to keep anything down since your rough early morning?" Sunset took the smoothie from her friend. "Yeah. Pretty much all I've had today is ginger ale and toast. I've been keeping it simple." Applejack smiled. "Well, that's good. How's your temperature?" "I don't know, it hasn't been checked since Rarity was here." Applejack walked over to Sunset's bathroom and took out the thermometer. "Well, maybe now's the time to check again." She walked over to Sunset and stuck the thermometer under her tongue. After waiting a few moments, Applejack took the thermometer out. "Hmm. Still pretty hot." Sunset smirked. "Well, I try not to let being sick keep me from looking good." Applejack snickered. "At least you still have a sense of humor, that's a good sign." Sunset took a drink from her smoothie. "Hey, this is pretty good." Applejack smiled. "Thanks. Made it myself." She said as she picked up her toolbox and guard rails. "Made from only the finest ingredients." She made her way to the stairs leading up to Sunset's bed and started taking tools out her toolbox. Sunset chuckled. "You sound like a commercial." "Gotta advertise when I can, business has been a little slow lately." "Wanna trade places?" Sunset quipped. "Last night was one of the busiest nights ever for me." "Nah." Said Applejack with a grin. "I'm sure things'll pick back up eventually. I've been working on some new cup tricks in my spare time. Gotta keep more than just the smoothies fresh!" She looked at Sunset and winked. "I'll try not to make too much noise, I know you still need your rest." "Thanks, Applejack." Sunset said with a smile. "And thanks for bringing the smoothie and installing a guard rail for my stairs." "You're welcome, sugarcube. Honestly, I don't know why you didn't ask sooner. It's a trippin' hazard!" Said Applejack. Sunset rolled her eyes. "I'd been meaning to, and I almost tripped earlier because I didn't want to throw up all over my bed or floor. Oh, and Applejack? Try not put bash your hand with a hammer again." She said, putting a teasing tone on the last sentence. "I'll try, but I ain't makin' any promises." Applejack said sarcastically. Sunset and Applejack laughed together. "So, how was Stormy with a Side of Pudding?" The farmgirl asked. "I fell asleep partway through it, but I told Pinkie that if I did we could always watch it another time." Applejack sighed. "I don't think any of us other than Pinkie have seen it. We've all been so busy with work, the band, school...not to mention the occasional day that needs savin'. Speakin' of work, I should get to puttin' in the guard rail." "I understand. Have fun!" Sunset said. As Applejack went to work, Sunset once again found herself looking back. Her first impression of Applejack was that she was just another country bumpkin hick. Over the course of Sunset's reformation, both her and Applejack's tempers would get the best of them both. There were several fights. Some with words, more with fists. Rarely did any hits connect, as Rarity, Rainbow Dash, and Pinkie Pie had to hold them both back while Fluttershy would hide somewhere. Over time, however, she saw that Applejack was all heart. Never afraid to tell the truth, even if it ended up hurting her in the end. Listening to all the sounds of tools in the background, Sunset took a drink from her smoothie and decided to text everyone. Hey guys! - Sent by Sunset Shimmer Sunset, darling! How are you feeling? - Sent by Rarity Still kinda crappy. - Sent by Sunset Shimmer Think you'll have enough energy to take me on? - Sent by Rainbow Dash Bring your "A" Game. - Sent by Sunset Shimmer Which comfort animal(s) would you like me to bring? - Sent by Fluttershy Surprise me. - Sent by Sunset Shimmer Fight the good fight, SunShim! - Sent by Pinkie Pie Thanks for the support, Pinkie! - Sent by Sunset Shimmer It's good to hear from you! - Sent by Twilight Sparkle I can't wait to hear about your date with Timber! - Sent by Sunset Shimmer After checking in with her friends, Sunset started feeling sleepy. Despite all the noise Applejack was making, Sunset drifted off. ---------------------------------------------- Sunset returned to the open field where the Celestias, the Raritys, and the Pinkie Pies were waiting. "Hey guys!" Equestrian Rarity trotted over to her and said "Well, you seem to have recovered from the Pinkies' antics." Sunset smiled. "I just needed to snap back to reality for a little bit." "Oh, there goes gravi-" Human Pinkie Pie started before human Rarity cut her off. "Please stop! You and the other Pinkie Pie have been freestyle rapping since she left!" Human Rarity said, pointing to Sunset. "Awww, but it's fun!" Human Pinkie Pie said. "Yeah!" Said Equestrian Pinkie Pie. "I'd love to play rock, paper, scissors, but it's impossible with hooves! Gotta do something while we wait!" "For me?" Asked Sunset. Equestrian Pinkie Pie shook her head. "No, silly! For them!" She pointed behind Sunset. Turning around, Sunset spotted Applejack and an orange earth pony mare wearing the same stetson hat as her friend. And I thought seeing Equestrian Flash Sentry was weird... Suddenly, Equestrian Pinkie Pie's teeth chattered again. "See you later, Sunset!" she said. ---------------------------------------------- Finished with her work, Applejack sent an update text. Just finished installing the guard rails on Sunset's stairs. She's sleeping now. - Sent by Applejack She checked in with us while you were working, so she must be feeling a little better. - Sent by Rainbow Dash I can't wait until she gets better! I'll hold a "Yay, You're All Better Now!" party! - Sent by Pinkie Pie I'm surprised she was able to sleep through all that noise. - Sent by Twilight Sparkle She's had an exhausting couple of days, so I'm not all surprised. - Sent by Rarity I'm on my way, I should be there soon. - Sent by Fluttershy Satisfied, Applejack walked over to the couch and gently nudged Sunset awake. "Hey, sugarcube. I'm all done. I'll be on my way out now." She said as Sunset opened her eyes. Sunset stretched her arms and yawned. "Okay. Thanks again for the smoothie and guard rail." She said. "Don't mention it. See you later and get well soon!" Applejack said as she left. Taking another drink from her smoothie, Sunset slowly got up from the couch to look at her new stair rails. It looks perfect, she thought with a smile. Moments later, there was a knock on the door. "It's unlocked!" Called Sunset. Fluttershy opened the door and following her were her comfort animals of choice. > Animal House > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Behind Fluttershy was a cat, a dog, a hamster in a ball and a chinchilla. "I would have brought more animals, but I didn't want to overwhelm you." She said. Closing the door, she walked over to Ray's cage. "Hello there, Ray." Fluttershy said sweetly. "How are you doing today?" She paused, listening intently. "Oh, I know, but don't worry. Sunset should be feeling better soon." She got out some crickets. "Dinner time!" She fed Ray, then walked over to Sunset's couch. "Ray's worried about you, the poor thing." Sunset smiled. "That's sweet of him. When I get better, I'll give him a treat as thanks. Would you mind getting this washcloth wet again?" "Not at all." Fluttershy said, taking the washcloth from Sunset and walking back to her kitchen. Sunset smiled again, remembering all she went through with Fluttershy. Her first impression was that Fluttershy was by far the easiest target in Canterlot High. Weak and submissive, unable to stand up for herself. After the Fall Formal, Sunset was so shocked that Fluttershy forgave her so easily that she burst into tears and hugged it out. As their friendship strengthened, Sunset was surprised how little she knew about her. Her compassion, her uncanny connection with animals and her hidden talent for songwriting. Speaking of which... thought Sunset. "Any new ideas for songs, Fluttershy?" she said as the cat Fluttershy brought leaped onto her and settled down on her stomach. Fluttershy nodded her head. "I do, but I want to go over them with the whole band. I hope you don't mind." "I understand." said Sunset, as the dog Fluttershy brought licked her hand. "Hey there, fella." she said to the dog, gently petting its head. She saw the chinchilla and hamster chase each other around. "Are they okay?" asked Sunset. Fluttershy put the washcloth on Sunset's forehead. "They're just fine, chinchillas are hyperactive by nature. I thought you'd enjoy seeing small animals scamper around the floor." She smiled. "And don't worry, I'll clean up after them if they make a mess." "Thank you Fluttershy, that means a lot to me." Sunset smiled as she stroked the cat laying and purring on her stomach. "You're welcome, Sunset. Do you have any idea how you got sick?" said Fluttershy. "I don't know for sure, but I'm betting that I might have had some bad sushi or something." said Sunset. "I suppose that makes sense. I remember the last time I accidentally ate bad food." Fluttershy shuddered. "Those images will haunt me forever." Oof, she must've had it way worse than me. I guess I should count my blessings, Sunset thought. She yawned and stretched, causing the cat to leap off her stomach. "Now I know how a springboard feels." she said sleepily. Fluttershy giggled. "I'll keep them busy while you catch up on some rest." "Thanks, Fluttershy." A moment later, Fluttershy sent an update text. Still no changes so far. She's taking a rest right now. - Sent by Fluttershy Something's gotta give eventually. She was drinking a smoothie that I brought her from work. - Sent by Applejack She better be at her best when I take her on! - Sent by Rainbow Dash Don't worry, her fever should break eventually. - Sent by Twilight Sparkle Twilight's right, we should just wait it out. - Sent by Rarity I'm already planning for the party! - Sent by Pinkie Pie Fluttershy sighed and tended to the animals. "All right everyone, let's keep things quiet so Sunset can get the rest she needs." ---------------------------------------------- Sunset found herself out in the open field again. Everyone was there waiting for her. "So, have both Pinkie Pies driven everyone and everypony insane yet?" she said with a grin. "Thankfully, no." said human Applejack. "There's enough people and ponies here to hold a pretty good party, so both of them have been too busy to cause any trouble." she gestured to Equestrian Pinkie Pie playing multiple instruments, while everyone else but the Celestias were dancing. "Huh." said Sunset. "That actually looks kinda fun. I could use a party after how crappy I've been feeling all day." She walked over to everyone and began to dance. ---------------------------------------------- About an hour had passed since Sunset fell asleep. Maybe I should leave. Even with the animals being quiet, I don't want to risk waking her up. thought Fluttershy. Maybe, just be on the safe side, I should tell Dash to come early? This is a nice neighborhood, so it's not like Sunset's going to be in any trouble if I just leave her here with the door unlocked. ---------------------------------------------- Sunset, her friends and their Equestrian counterparts we all dancing to Equestrian Pinkie Pie's music playing. Just then, Sunset thought she heard a noise. Looking around, she saw a small yellow blur out of the corner of her eyes. She blinked, slightly confused. She then heard a rustle in a bush. "Hello?" Sunset said. "Who's there?" Slowly but surely, a yellow pegasus mare cautiously trotted out. "Fluttershy?" she asked. "Do I know you?" asked Equestrian Fluttershy, still clearly frightened. "Don't worry, Fluttershy, I'm a friend." Sunset assured her. "It's okay, you can trust her." said human Fluttershy, slowly coming out of the bush her Equestrian counterpart hid in. "Hi there, Fluttershy." She greeted her friend. "Hello, Sunset." human Fluttershy smiled. ---------------------------------------------- After agonizing over her decision for a while, Fluttershy decided it was best to leave Sunset's home. She'd simply send a text letting her friends know. I'm leaving Sunset's place early so I don't accidentally wake her up. - Sent by Fluttershy You sure that's a good idea, sugarcube? - Sent by Applejack She should be fine, darling. We live in a decent neighborhood, after all. - Sent by Rarity I accidentally woke her up, and she seemed fine with it. - Sent by Pinkie Pie I think you might be missing the point, Pinkie. - Sent by Twilight Sparkle It'll be fine, guys! I can speed my way there in a flash. - Sent by Rainbow Dash ---------------------------------------------- The party was still going strong in Sunset's dream. I wonder if I'll ever get any words from the Celestias. Even both Fluttershys have been more talkative than those two. Suddenly, Equestrian Pinkie Pie stopped playing her instruments and looked in Sunset's direction. "Hey, you made it! Took you long enough!" Sunset blinked. "What do mean 'took me long enough'? I've been here for-" Equestrian Pinkie Pie giggled. "Not you, silly! Her!" Equestrian Pinkie pointed behind Sunset. Sunset turned around and gasped. There, standing right in front her, was a brilliant amber unicorn mare with a sun for a cutie mark. She was left speechless. "I know." her Equestrian self said. "This is weird for me too." > Face to Face > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Awkward silence followed for a few moments until Equestrian Pinkie Pie nudged human Sunset. Sunset let out a yelp. "I-I'm sorry. This is the weirdest thing I've ever seen, and I've seen some crazy shit!" Both Fluttershys gave human Sunset a stern look. "Sunset Shimmer! Such language!" they both said. Human Sunset took a deep breath and let it out, effectively calming herself down. "I'm sorry. I know this is a dream, but I never thought I'd see my Equestrian self and human self in the same place." She sat down on the grass and sighed. "I think I'm having an identity crisis." She rubbed her forehead. This must be how both Twilights felt after the Friendship Games, she thought. Equestrian Sunset slowly trotted toward her human self. "Like I said, this is weird for me too." ---------------------------------------------- Rainbow Dash left her house with a couple of video games in her hands and set off for Sunset's. I'm heading over to Sunset's! Fluttershy, did you leave the door unlocked? - Sent by Rainbow Dash I did, you shouldn't have any trouble getting in. - Sent by Fluttershy Good thing there isn't any magical wackiness going on right now, or we'd be in a pickle! - Sent by Pinkie Pie For heaven's sake, Pinkie, don't tempt fate! - Sent by Rarity Hope you have a good time! - Sent by Twilight Sparkle Has she been drinking her smoothie? - Sent by Applejack Ignoring the rest of the texts, Rainbow Dash continued forward. ---------------------------------------------- The two Sunsets stared at each other for a moment. Finally, human Sunset spoke. "So...does this mean I'm talking to...myself?" She said, scratching her head. Her Equestrian self grinned. "I suppose so." "What do we talk about? If you and I are the same, then we both pretty much know everything about each other." human Sunset sighed. "We both know what it's like to be both human and a pony. We both know what we've been through all this time..." she rubbed her forehead again. "This is all beyond me...I need a minute." Suddenly, Equestrian Pinkie Pie's teeth started chattering again. "Looks like you're getting what you want!" she smiled. ---------------------------------------------- "Huh? What?" Sunset said blearily. She blinked and rubbed her eyes. Upon opening them, she saw Rainbow Dash standing over her. Sunset yelped and sat up immediately. "How many times am I going to get startled today?!" She said, frustrated. Rainbow Dash laughed sheepishly. "Sorry about that." "It's okay, I'm sorry. I've just been having a-" "Rough day?" Rainbow Dash finished Sunset's sentence. "I get it." She smiled. Sunset looked around her living room area. "Where's Fluttershy?" "She left early. She didn't want to 'accidentally wake you up'." Rainbow Dash grinned. Sunset smiled and rolled her eyes. "That's Fluttershy for you." She saw that Rainbow had brought a couple of games with her. "Ooh, which games are those?" she said excitedly. Rainbow Dash put one game in each of her hands. In her left hand was a game titled "Yaks Destroy!". On the cover were many primitive-looking yaks smashing everything in sight. In her right hand was a game titled "Legends of the Past". On that cover was what looked to be human versions of Clover the Clever, Princess Platinum, Smart Cookie, Chancellor Puddinghead, Commander Hurricane and Private Pansy, each striking a unique fighting pose. "How about 'Yaks Destroy!'?" Sunset said. I think I've had enough with seeing human and Equestrian counterparts, but something tells me I haven't yet seen the end of it, she thought to herself. "You're on!" Said Rainbow Dash. "Think you can beat my high score?" As she and Rainbow Dash played, Sunset again found herself looking back on her history with one of her friends. When she first met her, Sunset saw Rainbow Dash as an obnoxious, self-centered, and hotheaded jock. The two of them would get into fights just about as often as Sunset did with Applejack. As Sunset got to know Rainbow better, she found her unyielding loyalty to be admirable. What is with me and reminiscing today? Must be the fever or something, she thought. "One more game, then I'm catching some Zs." Said Sunset. "The tiebreaker." "Wouldn't have it any other way!" Agreed Rainbow Dash. She took another look at Sunset. "Umm...are you okay?" Sunset looked weary. "I'm fine, but can you tell Princess Celestia not to raise the sun so close to my house? Seriously, it's like two hundred degrees in here!" She started taking her shirt off. "Whoa, Sunset!" Rainbow stood up quickly. "I know we're close friends and all, but at least warn me when you're gonna strip! Let me at least turn the thermostat down!" She ran to the thermostat and turned down the temperature. Sunset meant to say "Thanks, Dash, you're the best.", but what she ended up saying was "Thinksdashyordabes." Sunset then feel asleep. Uh, guys? Sunset started sweating like crazy, and she tried to take off her clothes in front of me! I had to turn down the temperature to stop her! - Sent by Rainbow Dash I didn't know Sunset swung that way! - Sent by Pinkie Pie No, Pinkie, it means her fever's breaking! She's on the road to recovery! - Sent by Twilight Sparkle Finally, some good news! - Sent by Rarity Well it's about damn time! - Sent by Applejack Yay! - Sent by Fluttershy ---------------------------------------------- Back in her dream, Sunset approached Equestrian Celestia. "What's with bringing the sun so close to my hou-" She cut herself off as realization dawned on her. "Oooohhh, my fever broke!" She blushed in embarrassment. Took my body long enough, she thought. Equestrian Celestia simply smiled. Before another word could be spoken, Sunset was woken up. ---------------------------------------------- Sunset opened her eyes to a very concerned Rainbow Dash. "Hey...are you okay?" asked Rainbow Dash. "Sorry I freaked out on you, I was in the moment." Sunset blinked then smiled. "It's okay, Dash. It looks like my fever finally broke." "That's what Twilight said was happening." Rainbow Dash smiled. "Get back to sleep, I just wanted to check in on you. I won't leave until Twilight gets here." "Thanks." Sunset said as she nodded off to sleep. ---------------------------------------------- Returning to her dream, she felt a nice breeze envelop her. Realizing that could only mean one thing: the Rainbows had arrived. Racing each other at top speed throughout the landscape, a blue blur on the ground and a blue blur in the air went along a set path, while everyone else cheered them both on. "So, did I miss much?" Asked Sunset. Human Pinkie Pie grinned. "Not much, they actually just started!" Okay, Sunset reviewed to herself. So we have both Princess Celestias, Raritys, Pinkie Pies, Applejacks, Fluttershys...both of me as well as both Rainbow Dashes. All that's left is... ---------------------------------------------- There was a knock at Sunset's door. > Twilight and Sunset > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Rainbow Dash answered the door. Twilight blinked in surprise. "Rainbow Dash? What are you still doing here?" Rainbow smiled. "I wanted to stick around til you got here." Twilight smiled back. "Well, I'm here now." She walked over to Sunset, who was still asleep, and lightly nudged her. "Huhwhat?" Sunset said, suddenly awake. "Twilight? Where's Rainbow?" Rainbow walked to Sunset. "On my way out, actually. I just wanted to stick around until Twilight got here." Sunset smiled. "Sweet. Thanks for staying." "Don't sweat it, Sunset. See ya later!" Rainbow left Sunset's home. "So." Twilight sat next to Sunset. "Been drinking enough fluids?" "Yes. Yes, I have." Sunset smiled weakly. "Here, let me help you." Twilight said. Channeling her geode, she used telekinesis to refill Sunset's glass of water and re-soak her washcloth. "Thanks, Twilight." Out of all six of her best friends, Sunset felt she and Twilight were the closest. Not simply because she bore a resemblance to the Princess of Friendship's human form, but because of the Friendship Games and Camp Everfree. Having been through similar struggles with Equestrian magic overwhelming them, and suffering confidence and guilt issues after, Sunset viewed this world's Twilight Sparkle as a kindred spirit. The only one of them who truly understood Sunset and what she had been through. That bond only deepened after the Memory Stone incident, as they were the first to remember each other after the battle. Speaking of Camp Everfree... Sunset thought. "Twilight, has Timber said anything about Gloriosa Daisy lately? I haven't heard from her since the last day of camp." She said. Twilight gave her a frown. "No, actually. He hasn't. Are you worried she might be suffering from guilt after Equestrian magic took her over?" Sunset nodded. "We've both been there, I just hope Gloriosa's holding up okay." "Me too." said Twilight. "Which reminds me, any updates from Juniper Montage?" Sunset shook her head. "She's been laying low since the whole mirror thing. But I've heard that she and Pinkie hang out from time to time." "So at least she's not alone." Twilight smiled. "That's good to know." Sunset smirked. "So should we set up counseling for your watering can after what happened at Principal Celestia's greenhouse?" They both laughed. Suddenly, a thought occurred to Twilight. "You think maybe we should make a support group for this kind of thing?" Sunset thought for a moment. "I'm not sure." she said. "It's bad enough that there's rogue Equestrian magic out there, but to have it be public knowledge is another thing altogether. I don't think it's worth the risk of attracting unwanted attention." Twilight sighed. "You're probably right. Well, it was worth a thought at least." Sunset nodded. "It was." She grinned. "Sooooo...how was the date?" Twilight blushed. Sunset smiled playfully. "Come on now, you knew this was coming. Spill." Still blushing, Twilight sighed. "It was wonderful. We took a walk around the Canterlot City museum. Their exhibits on caves and bats was really informative. Even Timber and I learned a few new things! Did you know that most caves form in karst? Karst is a landscape made from the dissolution of soluble rocks! I didn't even know that was a thing!" Sunset smiled. "Me neither. At least you can hold a conversation with Maud now." Twilight giggled. "But enough about me. How about I turn the tables on you?" She grinned. "I know you and Flash Sentry were dating at one point." Sunset gave Twilight a look of frustration and sighed. "We weren't a thing, I just saw him as a means to an end." She saw the shocked look on Twilight's face. "I'm sorry. I've had to explain that so many times to so many people that I'm getting tired of doing so." Sunset's expression softened. "As you're well aware, I'm actually a unicorn from Equestria. Even before I set foot in this world, I spent all my time studying magic. I'm not even exaggerating. Magic was my sole focus. My obsession. The only pony I would even so much as give the time of day to was Princess Celestia." Twilight gave Sunset a confused look. "Sorry, I kinda rambled on there. My point is that I don't know what my sexual orientation is. I never thought of mares, stallions, males, females, and what have you in a romantic manner. Even now that I'm learning about friendship, I still feel the same way. Someday it may change, or it never will." Twilight stared at Sunset. "Wow. I had no idea." Sunset gave Twilight a sad smile. "I don't think about that sort of thing very often. Not that it makes me uncomfortable when I do, it's just not something that happens often." "So how are you feeling now? With the fever, I mean." Twilight said, deciding to change the subject. "Well, I've been sweating like crazy for a while now. I've been drinking water like my life depends on it, because it kinda feels like it does." said Sunset. Twilight snickered. "You must be spending a lot of time with Rarity. That was a tad overly dramatic of you to say." Sunset grinned. "Wanna trade places and see if you change your mind?" Twilight barked out a laugh. "Tell you what. If I ever get as sick as you are right now, we'll compare notes." "Deal." Sunset stretched and yawned. "Well I think that if I don't sleep well tonight after the day I've had, I'm gonna go crazy." Twilight looked at her phone to see the time. "Yeah, it's getting pretty late. Do you need help getting upstairs?" Sunset smiled and rolled her eyes. "Come on, Twilight. I'm not that sick." "Thought I'd ask just in case." Twilight smiled. "Thanks for the offer, though." The two close friends hugged. "See you tomorrow?" Twilight asked. "If I sleep well enough, sure. I'll lock the door behind you." Said Sunset. As Sunset closed and locked her front door, she breathed a sigh of relief. All six of my closest friends aside, I'm glad this day is finally coming to a close. Walking up the stairs using her new guard rail, Sunset again ran her fingers over each of her guitars on the way up to her bed. "Still music to my ears." She smiled. Making her way into her bed, she fell asleep almost immediately. ---------------------------------------------- Back in her dream, she saw the Rainbow Dashes, Pinkie Pies, Raritys, Applejacks and Fluttershys standing around their respective world's Celestia. To Sunset's side was her Equestrian self. Suddenly, there was a flash of purple light. "And magic makes it all complete." Said Sunset, as the Princess of Friendship in her Equestrian form and her closest human friend appeared right before her. "Hey, that's the theme song!" Shouted Pinkie Pie. "Indeed." For the first time in Sunset's dream, Princess Celestia spoke. "Now that we're finally all here, we can begin." > The Dream > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sunset looked at Princess Celestia, confused. "Begin? Begin what?" Princess Celestia looked at Sunset Shimmer fondly. "Sunset Shimmer. You have been through so much. Princess Twilight has informed me of your actions at the Fall Formal, the Battle of the Bands, the Friendship Games and Camp Everfree. I saw in pony how much you changed during the Memory Stone incident." Typical Princess Celestia, Sunset thought with a smile. She hardly ever gives anypony a straight answer. Equestrian Pinkie Pie gasped. "Are you going to turn Sunset into an Alicorn?!" That question earned her angry looks from all but the Celestias and Equestrian Pinkie Pie's human counterpart, who had covered her head in her hands. Equestrian Pinkie Pie's face turned almost completely red from embarrassment. "Oh. Sorry about that. Totally misread the context there." Sunset giggled. "I've heard that one before." She said. "I believe you are ready for a task I've had in mind ever since Princess Twilight returned with her crown." Said Princess Celestia. "You...what?" Sunset said, shocked. "In order to complete this task, you must return to Equestria." Sunset remained silent, her mouth agape. Princess Twilight Sparkle chimed in. "Princess Celestia helped me fulfill my destiny by making me the Princess of Friendship. This will be your journey to discover your destiny." Sunset, still in shock, could only utter the words "My...destiny?". Princess Celestia nodded her head. "Your path to redemption has been a long one, Sunset Shimmer. And with this journey, you will finally complete it." Principal Celestia smiled. "You've come such a long, long, way." "I thought we weren't turning her into an Alicorn!" Human Pinkie Pie blurted out. Equestrian Rarity rolled her eyes. "Please, Miss Pie! Both of you! Appreciate the moment we're all having." Human Pinkie Pie blushed in embarrassment. "Shutting up now!" Sunset laughed, recovering from her initial shock. "That's a relief. I thought she was broken." Equestrian Rainbow Dash said. "Oh for Celestia's sake, Rainbow Dash! Not you too!" Equestrian Rarity yelled. Equestrian Rainbow Dash covered her face with her wings in embarrassment and shame. "Well, at least it's lightening the mood a little." Said Sunset. "I know it's a lot to take in, but I know you can do it!" said human Twilight. "Yeah! You're the most awesome person I know! ...Next to me, that is." said human Rainbow Dash. "We all have faith in you!" said human Fluttershy. "Oooh! And when you get back, we should have a full-weekend sleepover party at your place!" said human Pinkie Pie. "It would be a divine bonding experience." said human Rarity. "A weekend of holding nothing back. Nothing but the truth. Get to really know each other." said human Applejack. That's oddly specific, Sunset thought. But this isn't an average dream for me, so there must be something to it. "Twilight has shown me all of your paintings, Sunset Shimmer. You have quite the talent for art!" Said Equestrian Rarity. "You've been working hard to prove yourself to your school. I can get behind that." Said Equestrian Applejack. "When you come over, you better tell me all about the awesome adventures you had!" Said Equestrian Rainbow Dash. "We can have a 'getting to know you' party!" Said Equestrian Pinkie Pie. "Ooh! We could have a tea party!" Said Equestrian Fluttershy. "It'll be great to see you again! And It'll be great for you to meet my Equestrian friends!" Smiled Princess Twilight. "You've got this." Her Equestrian self said. Sunset found herself tearing up. "You guys..." She choked up. Suddenly, the landscape slowly shifted again, the ground slowly disappearing bit by bit. Sunset's eyes widened as she started falling. "Oh, fu-" She cut herself off. I can't believe I forgot this is a dream! She sighed and concentrated. Focusing, she stopped in midair. Her Equestrian self levitated next to her. "Yeah. You've totally got this." Her pony counterpart smiled. Slowly, everyone levitated toward Sunset. Both Princess and Principal Celestia, both Twilight Sparkles, Raritys, Pinkie Pies, Fluttershys, Applejacks and Rainbow Dashes and her Equestrian self embraced her. All together, they said "See you soon!" Feeling all of their warmth and love, the sunlight grew brighter until it engulfed everyone. ---------------------------------------------- Opening her eyes, Sunset Shimmer woke up. Staring at the ceiling, she began to process all that happened in her dream. What on earth and Equestria just happened?, she thought. Sitting up, she started tearing up again. Deciding it best to let it all out, she cried tears of joy and inspiration. Hugging herself as she wept, Sunset thought about how she'd tell her closest friends what happened in her dream. A few minutes later, she finally got control of herself. Wait a minute... She realized that she was no longer sweating. "FINALLY!" she shouted. "Back to one hundred percent!" Glancing at her bed and pillow, she noticed they were drenched with sweat. Yuck. I should wash these. She changed the sheets on her bed and her pillow cover. After putting the sweat-filled ones in her laundry basket, she grabbed her phone off her nightstand and ran down the stairs, using the guard rail for support. Reaching the floor, she took the quickest shower she ever had. She then ran back up the stairs, put her pajamas in her dirty clothes basket, got dressed and eagerly texted her friends. Hey girls! Grabbing a stray folder on her desk, she put all the copies and the original in it and set off for the mall. ---------------------------------------------- Waiting at their favorite table in the food court, Twilight, Pinkie, Rarity, Rainbow Dash, Fluttershy and Applejack speculated on what Sunset had in store. Pinkie Pie was the first to speak. "You don't suppose someone from her dark past ambushed her last night, put her in a magical coma and is coming to kill us, do you?!" Everyone at the table stared at her. "Oookay." said Rainbow Dash, breaking the silence between them. "Setting that aside...I think she got a sweet new guitar and she's gonna show it to us!" "I think she woulda told us that by now." Said Applejack. "Indeed." said Rarity. "It's important enough to her to have us all gather here at the mall, so it must be something fabulous!" "Whatever it is, I don't know whether I should be nervous or not." Said Fluttershy. "I doubt you have any reason to be nervous, Fluttershy." said Twilight. "Oh, Twilight. I always find a reason to be nervous." said Fluttershy. Everyone stared at Fluttershy for a moment, then everyone laughed. "I knew I'd find you guys here!" Sunset said as she approached the table. Everyone got up and hugged her. "You guys won't believe what I've been through. Y'know. Aside from the fever. ---------------------------------------------- "And that's what happened." Sunset said as she finished telling them about her dreams. She took in the reactions of her friends. Twilight and Applejack's eyes were wide with awe and their jaws had dropped. Rarity and Fluttershy had their hands to their mouths, tears forming in their eyes. Rainbow Dash had a look of confusion on her face. Pinkie Pie looked like she was on the verge of bawling. Silence followed for what seemed like an eternity. Sunset smiled. "I know, it's a lot to take in. And I was there." Applejack spoke first. "You're right...I don't believe it. Both us and our...'Equestrian counterparts'? In the same place?" "I like the idea of the weekend sleepover!" Said Pinkie. "How long would your journey, or quest, or whatever take?" asked Rainbow Dash. Sunset sighed. "Honestly, I don't know. It could take any length of time." "When will you leave?" asked Fluttershy. "Probably today. This sounds too important to just put off." Said Sunset. Twilight looked at Sunset with concern. "Your...destiny?" Sunset nodded. "That's all that I know. I wasn't given any further explanation. But that's fairly typical of Princess Celestia." "Sunset, darling. Will there be any way to contact you if we need you?" Asked Rarity. Sunset frowned. "I don't think so, but worst case scenario I suppose you could make your way to Equestria to try to reach me." She started to tear up. "Before I go, I just wanted to show you all...this." Sunset opened her folder and gave each of her friends a drawing. They all looked at their drawings, and slowly began to tear up themselves. "Are those...who I think they are?" said Applejack. Sunset smiled. "Yes." "This...is...awesome." said Rainbow Dash, unable to hide the quavering in her voice. "I've...I've never seen anything like it." Rarity said, wiping away a tear. All Fluttershy could manage was a very quiet "Oh, my..." Twilight sniffled. "It's the most beautiful drawing I've ever seen." Pinkie Pie could barely contain her tears. Sunset looked at the original drawing she made as she started to shed tears. The picture she had drawn was a picture of herself, Rarity, Rainbow Dash, Applejack, Fluttershy, Twilight, and Pinkie holding the hooves of their Equestrian counterparts in a pose similar to the one that Princess Twilight and the girls held when they battled her during the Fall Formal. Hearts were dotted all over the picture. In the center of the heart formation were the words "Friendship is Magic". Directly below the heart formation were the words "I love you all!" Choking up, Sunset said "I call this 'The Best of Both Worlds.'" Unable to hold back any longer, Pinkie Pie rushed toward Sunset and hugged her tightly, bawling uncontrollably. Despite her sobbing, she managed to choke out "Oh, Sunset Shimmer. I love you too! We all do!" This was all it took to push Sunset over the edge. Hugging Pinkie tightly, she burst into tears, barely able to stand. Rarity, Fluttershy, Applejack, Twilight and Rainbow Dash all rushed over and joined in the hug, shedding tears of their own. A few minutes later, they all calmed down. Looking at each other with fondness, they gave one last tight group hug. Suddenly, Sunset's geode activated without being touched. ---------------------------------------------- Sunset saw Rarity looking longingly at a silhouette in the distance. Sunset thought it looked familiar, but it was too fuzzy to make out. Blinking, Sunset then saw Applejack bolting awake in bed, covered in sweat. She'd never seen Applejack so terrified. Blinking again, Sunset suddenly found herself in Rainbow Dash's room, watching her play guitar and slowly break down into tears, clutching the instrument. After another blink, she was right next to Fluttershy, screaming in what appeared to be frustration. Startled, she blinked again only to see Twilight reading a book, but she looked nervous. Afraid even. Blinking one last time, Sunset saw Pinkie Pie covering herself in whipped cream. ---------------------------------------------- Sunset gasped. Back to reality, she looked at her friends. They looked back at her, concern on their faces. "What...just happened?" she said. "Your geode activated on its own...interesting." said Twilight. "How did that happen when we haven't been overusing our magic?" Sunset shrugged. "I don't know. Maybe it has something to do with this whole quest-destiny thing I need to complete." Suddenly, her bag began to vibrate. "The book!" Sunset opened her bag and took out the book. Sunset, you have got to come to Equestria. I found a book that I missed in the restricted section of the Canterlot Library! It belonged to Clover the Clever, but the pages are all blank! "I think that's my cue to head out. Want to see me off?" said Sunset. ---------------------------------------------- Arriving at Canterlot High, the seven friends walked up to the portal. "Stay safe out there, sugarcube!" said Applejack. "We believe in you!" said Fluttershy. "Kick that quest in the ass and show it who's boss!" said Rainbow Dash. "Take all the time you need, darling!" said Rarity. Pinkie Pie handed Sunset a cupcake. "For the road!" she said. "We hope your quest is successful!" said Twilight. "You can count on it." Sunset said with a grin. Twilight, Pinkie, Rarity, Rainbow Dash, Fluttershy and Applejack looked at one another and nodded. "We all agree to the idea of the weekend sleepover. It'll be fun!" she smiled. "I look forward to it." said Sunset. "See you guys later!" she said as she slowly passed through the portal. As they all said their goodbyes, they remained completely unaware that the events they set in motion would change their very lives forever. End of Book 1 of Not Just Any Old Day
