> Tangled Hooves > by Compromisations > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- > Chapter 1 > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Twilight frantically scrambled around, pushing off a clasped file from her desk. Twilight attempted to sort through a large bookcase, magically tossing papers and books everywhere. A massive paper stack fell to the floor, Twilight’s horn shot sparkling purple wisps as she struggled to lift it. "I can't believe I can't find it! And today of all days!" Starlight nervously tapped her hoof against the castle’s dining table. She mulled the morning over, Twilight’s erratic behavior left her perplexed. Her breakfast plate had been empty for a half hour, the pancake’s honey was beginning to harden. "Twilight I hate to be a huge bummer but-" "What!" Twilight huffed, throwing the papers aside in a fit of rage. "It's." Starlight's ears flicked back, she hid her nervousness with a shaky giggle. "No. I- it's nothing!" Twilight forced a smile, pushing her mane out of her eyes. She abruptly dropped the levitated papers, hanging her head in exhaustion. "Sorry, Starlight." Her voice trembled, still tinged with anger. "It's just. Spike and I are leaving for Canterlot” She attempted to catch her breath. “On Monday and-" Starlight nodded obediently, hoping Twilight wouldn't lay a speech on her. "It's just. Our next lesson was about accepting differences and-" Starlight slumped down, attempting to hide her guilt. "Oh. I see." Starlight's mood grew sour as she tried to hold back a sniffle. Twilight's paced toward her student, anxiously realizing the error she'd made. "No, Starlight. That's not what I meant." Starlight looked up, hastily wiping away a growing tear. "This is more about. Friendship differences." "Ah right!" Starlight jolted up immediately, covering up her remaining sadness. "Sorry, about that, teacher!" Twilight forced a cute smile, waving her hoof in an apologetic manner. “You don’t have to call me that.” “Sorry, teacher!” Twilight rolled her eyes, trying to grasp the situation. "Look. I think this morning has gotten off to a bad start." Twilight mulled it over, looking toward the doorway. "I think. Spike probably wanted to go visit Fluttershy. Maybe to see Elizabeak? Or... something." Starlight knew she was trying to worm her way out of this, but arguing with Twilight never ended well. Twilight’s emotions appeared to be running higher than usual, a day off of studying couldn't hurt. "Are you sure Twilight? Is it okay if I just miss out today?" Starlight got up, carefully angling her breakfast plate toward the kitchen. "Positive!" Twilight slammed her hoof down on the table in success. Starlight jumped, startled at the expression of relief. "Eheh, sorry." Twilight covered her mouth with her wing, attempting to muffle her giggles. "Anyway. Why don't you go spend the day in the library or the spa?" Starlight knew what she wanted to do, but it wasn't going to sit right with Twilight. "O-oh! Yes of course! That sounds perfect I'll, be right over there!" > Chapter 2 > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- It took starlight a good half hour to navigate through the castle. She was beginning to think it was a lost cause. Getting stuck in Spike’s bathroom was never fun. After finding the front door, she was ready for a nap. Manually pushing the heavy crystal doors open, she was eagerly greeted. "Huzzah!" Starlight whipped around, attempting to locate the call. "Overrr heeerrreee!" "Ah! Hi Trix!" Trixie smiled egotistically, tipping her hat in a flamboyant manner. "Well, Starrrlight! I'm guessing the frrrriendship lessons didn't go so great?" Starlight yelped, signaling Trixie to be quiet. "Trixie! Twilight could've heard you!" "So what?" Starlight shifted her stance, looking down at Trixie. "Were you listening in on my lesson?" Trixie blushed, hiding her face with her hat. "N-no not at all! I just happened to overhear, is all." Starlight raised an eyebrow, tapping her hoof judgmentally. "What? I was just walking by, being adored by everypony. Plus, I was focusing on my magic anyway. Then, I just happened to hear Twilight yell from inside the castle, and I only stopped for a few minutes and-" "Trixie." Starlight huffed firmly, stopping Trixie instantly. "Mmm. So what if a little birdy told me, it's. Not like I would even care about your lessons!” Starlight sniggered, grinning down on her friend. "Trixie, you're shaking like crazy." "No! You're lying!" Trixie's hat fell off in the commotion, she quickly scrambled in hopes of hiding herself with her cloak. Starlight teased, poking out her tongue as she headed down the crystal palace stairs to meet with Trixie. "Relax Trixie. I was going to tell you about it anyway. But you should probably stop listening in on me. Just in case Twilight finds out.” "Ah, good. Glad we are in agreement then." Trixie regained her snooty Aura, tossing her cloak upward and allowing it to flow elegantly amongst the wind. Starlight raised an eyebrow, trying to call her bluff. "Ahah.. ha?" Trixie could only stammer in response. The two headed toward the spa, Trixie couldn't help but constantly fluff up her mane when met with a glance. "Twilight seemed a little tense today, didn’t she?” Trixie smiled to herself cunningly. “It may just cause her to get careless when it comes to the next magic lesson... Don't you think Starlight?" Trixie began to chuckle at her realization, menacingly kicking a rock off the path. "I don't know why you're still so adamant about surpassing Twilight. Haven't you learned yet?" Trixie scowled, playfully nudging Starlight. "Well. Learning wouldn't be the word I'd use. If you catch my drift." "Really?" Trixie scowled, pulling Starlight into a huddle. "Trixie may make mistakes, but knowing Twilight admitting defeat." Starlight rolled her eyes, smiling as she listened to another one of Trixie's plans. Starlight knew despite Trixie's mountainous confidence and brash attitude, she knew her flaws and was working to change them. Starlight always enjoyed helping Trixie work through her problems. Being able to work alongside Trixie was a real friendship lesson. Plus, she made everything fun. Trips to the general store, the drive-through at McSoys, Rainbow Dash's Wonderbolt tangents. Starlight had never imagined a day where she'd be so enthralled in Stage Magic, despite understanding all the magical aspects involved. The spa was busy today. Somepony had knocked over the chalkboard by the door. It took a while before they were finally able to get into the spa. Trixie rubbed her haunches as the line began to shorten. "How long does it take to get a hooficure!? Seriously!" Trixie shook her hoof angrily at Lotus who was positioned nearby. Starlight cringed as she saw Lotus tending to a clogged, unwashed basin. Just imagining the amount of loose drain hair Lotus was dealing with made her shudder. A hefty cloud of Spa steam washed over the both of them. Trixie's attention averted toward a stylish young mare. Her mane was wrapped in violet towels. Trixie looked away, swatting the spa mist out of her face. Starlight looked on eagerly, noticing a taller stallion standing beside the fashionable mare. Starlight gave the couple a friendly wave but was greeted by a judgemental stare covered in thick eyeliner. "Is there something you needed?" The mare let off a magical aura. On closer inspection Starlight found the aura beginning to put her at ease. It was strange, a soothing Aura coming off a mare who was as dismissive as a dragon. The fashionable pony stuck up her nose at the two. Probably after recognizing who Trixie was. "Eheh... well- yes actually. I was wondering what. Eh." Starlight was tongue-tied. Trixie stepped in abruptly, puffing her mane up again with pride. "I think what Starrrlight is trrrying to ask is what service did you order?" Trixie fluttered her eyelashes, proud of her confidence. The stallion looked at his girlfriend, nodding to her in a petty manner. He spoke up, possibly in place of the mare. "It was the new Crystal Empire steam sauna treatment. Good day to you." He nodded solemnly, almost as if shaken by Trixie's enthusiasm. "Trixie! We should totally get that!" Starlight tittered in excitement. Thoughts of glamorous magical steam began to surface. Twilight's classes had left her with one too many split ends. "Hah! As if I'd care for that. I barely let my own mother touch my mane." Starlight feigned a sulk in order to change Trixie's mind. "What? Stop looking at me like that! Trixie puffed her chest, stomping her hoof in an attempt to defend herself Starlight's cheap trick. "C’mon Trix, it's what best friends would do for each other." "Well. What's In it for me?" Trixie twirled her mane wearily, eying Starlight. "I'll pay for both of us." "Deal!" She exclaimed, tossing her cloak up in delight once more. > Chapter 3 > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Starlight searched her saddlebag, pulling out her purse. However, it was quickly swept up with a grip of blue magic. "I, Trixie will have two of those jewel mane treatments! Make them EXTRA long! Extra hot, and use EXTRA jewels!” Aloe was tending to the counter. She stared at Trixie with a face of confusion. "Sorry Mrs. If you are speaking of the new Crystal Empire treatment, it only really comes as a set. It's hard to, how you say... customize?" Trixie emptied out Starlight’s purse onto the counter. Aloe counted carefully. Starlight shrunk behind Trixie in embarrassment. “Uh. Miss Trixie. You are… missing two more bits. I-” Trixie stuck up her hoof, silencing the frazzled register pony. “Fear not! For the GREAT AND POWERFUL TRRRIXIIIE HAVE BITS TO SPARE!” Starlight looked away, her embarrassment deepening as Trixie tugged off her hat. As her concentration peaked, she stuck out her tongue, vigorously shaking her hat until two bits clacked on the counter. Trixie took a bow, half expecting applause. “E-er, thank you, miss Trixie! But please, be a tad quieter." Aloe flashed a wonky smile, sliding the conjured bits off the counter. “No need to thank me for the free show!” Trixie struck a pose, in awe of her own trick. “I’m only the BEST magician in all of Ponyville!” “Keep it down!” A nearby voice called out to Trixie. Starlight spotted a pony eagerly shoving a filly out the door. “That grey haired pony scares me." A couple of spa ponies were chattering amongst themselves. Starlight stood in front of Trixie in defensively. “IT IS NOT GREY! IT IS SILVER! THE COLOR OF-” Aloe banged her hooves against the counter, calling for Lotus to usher the two ponies down the hall. “You must keep it down! Lotus will take you now!" Trixie and Starlight trod down the hall. Starlight was still far too embarrassed to strike up a small conversation. That was until she heard Trixie mutter under her breath. “What was that Trix?” Starlight’s voice was still shaky from the judgemental stares of the waiting room ponies. “Well. It’s just!” Trixie stopped abruptly, swiping her hat off mid-sentence. “LOOK Starlight! My hair is not grey! I am not an elderly pony! It is silver, the color of beauty and victory!” “Well. Having grey hair isn’t all bad.” “It’s silver!” Trixie snorted in anger, stomping her foot hard on the ground. Starlight’s ears flicked back in surprise. “I was only joking! Plus, isn't it more of a blue?" “Good, you better have been, ignoring Starlight's question. “It’s not bad to have silver hair.” Starlight enunciated. Trixie raised an eyebrow. “How so?" "Well, how many other magicians do you know-" "None as great as me!" Starlight rolled her eyes, chuckling at Trixie's interruption. "How many other magicians do you know with silver manes." Trixie smiled, petting her mane. “Mmm, I guess you’re right." She smiled to herself. Starlight cocked her head in confusion. "It’s like; I’m already unique! The hair is just the icing on the cake!” > Chapter 4 > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Lotus Blossom joined them sooner after. Her hooves were fixed on a heavy spa cart. Starlight’s eyes sparkled upon closer inspection. Hot towels lay next to a bucket piled high with gems. “Gosh, I’m so excited!” Lotus nodded, giving an arbitrary explanation rather proudly. “The spa treatment occurs in there. Heat is used to steam magic within the gems” She pointed toward a wooden door. Starlight squinted as she read the sign. ‘Sauna Bath - Enter with permission’ Starlight hurried inside, Trixie following slowly behind. Even without Starlight’s magic, the sauna heavy door hardly proved an obstacle. “Look out Trix!” Starlight leaped into sauna bath, which to her surprise the pool wasn’t heated yet. “Eep!” Starlight giggled uncontrollably as the unheated water splashed the floor and walls. “It’s so cold!” Starlight splashed around playfully. “NO!” Trixie yelped. Starlight turned to find Trixie frantically tugging off her cloak and hat, both were soaked in cold water. Starlight hopped out of the tub, nervously checking to see if either garment had been ruined. “I’m sorry Trix, I should’ve been more careful…” Trixie picked the cloak up in her mouth, expertly throwing the soaking cape onto unsuspecting unicorn. The sudden loss of Starlight’s vision caused her to teeter backward, squealing as she harmlessly topped backward into the water. “Ameutur trick!” Trixie placed her hoof on her chest, nodding happily. “You really thought that the great and powerful Trixie would adorn herself with a cloak that wasn’t water resistant at the last?” “I guess not. You got me Trix” Starlight smiled to herself. “It was so very funny!” Lotus had been laughing the entire time. The spa pony wiped a small tear from her eye, preparing to start the spa process. “Well yes! The great Trixie is very capable of so many things. Especially humor!” Starlight nudged a clump of her sopping mane out of her eyes. Lotus gasped as she saw Starlight’s horn glow vividly. “No magic zone please miss!” A flash of purple caught Trixie off guard. The magician vanished instantly, appearing seconds after a splash. “A teleportation spell!? How dare you!” Trixie said almost shocked, trying scramble out of the tub. “Gotcha!” Starlight winked at Trixie, however, her expression fell upon seeing her friend’s reaction. “Look! My mane is all wet! Eurgh!” Trixie squeezed out her mane in a hectic manner. Lotus looked onward perplexed, calmly trying to appease Trixie. “I’d ask you now to stay in the sauna now. It is spa rules, the floor is slippery… Is something the matter?” “Not at all. Trixie just doesn’t like to be tricked, hmm?” Trixie stated bitterly. Lotus tried her best to comfort Trixie despite having to hide her obvious amusement. “That was, what was meant to happen, no? It is a bath after all.” Lotus gasped, only now realizing the two unicorns had been at each other for the last 5 minutes. “Now girls, I think it's best if we start the steam bath now!” Lotus flew into focus mode, wheeling the trolley into the correct position. Starlight watched as Lotus picked the jewel bucket up, accordingly aligning several rainbow gems around the room. “It’s cold.” Trixie shook her head, still angry at Starlight’s trick. Lotus tried to break the awkwardness. Lotus held a small jug in her mouth. The rim of the jug was metallic and engraved with old ponish. Starlight nudged Trixie, who was still grumpily resting under the water. “Aren’t you excited Trix?!” “Yeah, totally thrilled.” Trixie retorted sarcastically. The room filled up with steam almost immediately after Lotus tipped the jug. The steam grew thicker by the second. Starlight heard the door click moments later, Lotus must’ve left them to their own devices. > Chapter 5 > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Trixie coughed obnoxiously, attempting to fan away the smoke with her hoof. “Ugh! This is absolutely ghastly Starlight! What kind of relaxation is this!” “Calm down Trixie, you’re splashing the water on me.” Starlight sighed, laying back in the tub and allowing the steam to set into her mane. “It’s so humid in here! Plus, the water isn’t even warm. I can’t believe you talked me into this.” Trixie continued to complain. The room was almost undiscernable, the steam was thick, to say the least. A few moments passed before Starlight felt Trixie grab her arm wildly. “Let me out then! I’ve had enough!” Trixie kicked, Starlight squealed as she heard the tub water slosh unpleasantly against the room’s walls and floor. Starlight poured energy into her horn. Sparks flew from the unicorn’s forehead, lighting the fogged room almost instantly. Trixie’s stopped panicking in awe of Starlight’s quick magic. “Are you okay Trix?” Trixie’s ears bent back instinctively. “Is it over?” The blue unicorn spoke cautiously. "Is everything okay In here?" Lotus swung the door open, Aloe was beside her. Both looked equally as concerned. Starlight watched the steam pour out of the now open doorway. Trixie was dazed, her voice still shaking. Aloe ran to comfort Trixie. However, the beautician’s help was refused. “Trixie is fine!” Aloe’s face lit up as she saw Starlight emerge from the tub. The two sisters were very proud of their work. Lotus raised her nose in a fit of delight, hoping Trixie had moved past her troubles. “Oh my! Yes! The spa treatment has worked wonders of your mane, dear!” > Chapter 6 > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Starlight left the spa after the shower of confidence. Trixie followed close behind. Small bags formed under Trixie’s eyes. Now was a good time to break the silence. "So Trixie? How do you like it?” Starlight admired the sparkles littered throughout her blue highlight. “Don’t they just look great when they catch the sun!” Trixie nodded, unenthusiastic. "Yes. Yes, it's very nice." “How about your own mane?” Starlight asked cautiously. Trixie dug at the ground at the question. “Yes, it looks nice too. Starlight.” The two spent the day poking around Ponyville. The sun was beginning to set. This was probably a good time to split up. "What a day, huh?" Starlight nudged Trixie, who was mindlessly munching on a bag of hay fries. “H-huh? Oh yeah of course.” Trixie responded, popping another fry into her mouth. Starlight tilted her head anxiously, magically lifting the bag away from Trixie. Starlight put her hoof around Trixie. "Everything okay Trixie? You've been this way since the spa." "Everything is fine!" Trixie stamped her hoof, pulling away from her friend. Starlight winced back in embarrassment. "N-no! I mean, I’m just tired is all! You know, the next magic show and all. Don’t worry about me Starlight.” Trixie rubbed her eyes, yawning. A couple nearby ponies had stopped to listen in on Trixie’s outburst. "But. Your next show isn't until the next full moon." "Well! Stress is what makes perfect!" Trixie’s voice quivered. "I need to get back to my wagon anyway" Trixie added before hurrying off. > Chapter 7 > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Despite the fact Trixie was hurrying, Starlight couldn’t help but follow close behind her. The long path winding toward Trixie’s wagon seemed longer than usual. Starlight couldn’t help but admire the dappled moonlight on Trixie’s mane. “H-hey Trix. Your mane looks good. I.” Trixie looked over her shoulder. “Thanks. But, you’ve been mentioning it all day.” Trixie yawned through her words. Before Starlight could answer she was interrupted by an obtrusive squeak. “Oops, sorry.” Trixie rolled her eyes at the rickety door. “You should really get oiled, Trix.” “Well, bedtime for me. I think.” Trixie trotted sluggishly into her wagon. Each hoofstep she took creaked against the wooden floor. Starlight grumbled to herself, attempting to clear away a few intrusive thoughts. "Trixie. I can tell something's up." Starlight bounded up the Wagon stairs behind Trixie. “Starrrlight.” Trixie groaned. “I told you, nothing is wrong.” Trixie tried to imply her words firmly, but another yawn caught the magician off guard. “Well. If nothing is wrong, then you won’t mind me staying here tonight!” Starlight chirped happily. Trixie shot her a perplexed look. “You want to stay here?” Trixie sleepily looked around her wagon aimlessly. “Why? Wouldn’t the castle be-” “Just to check if you’re okay is all.” “How do you plan to do that?” Trixie raised an eyebrow, trying to conceal a soft smile. Starlight really hadn’t thought this through. Maybe those intrusive thoughts earlier had some merit. “Well. If you wake up crying in the middle of the night, I’ll know I fulfilled my duty as a good friend!” "You really don't have to stay here tonight. I'm really. I'm fine." Trixie paused, rubbing her sullen eyes again. "No. You're not." Starlight said, placing a hoof on Trixie's shoulder. "I know you're not." Starlight tried not to cry between her words. Trixie pushed Starlight's hoof off carefully. Nodding. "I'm too tired to stop you, Star-" Starlight shoved her hoof in front of Trixie's mouth. "Not another word." > Chapter 8 > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Starlight took her time admiring Trixie’s wagon. Each shelf had been organized by prop type. Chain links, playing cards, magic wands. “Since when did you use magic wands in your show?” Trixie ignored her, collapsing on her bed. “So… Where should I sleep?” “Wherever you want… Just. The spare blankets are in the. Locked. Chest…” “Which chest?” Starlight lowered her voice as she heard Trixie falling asleep. Starlight mulled over her options. “Where to sleep, where to sleep.” She paced around the room. A cool breeze wafted through the open window, ruffling the curtains. Starlight checked all the chests. Every single one locked with a heavy padlock. “Well. Trixie wouldn’t appreciate me digging through her props so. I can make this work!” Starlight lay against a wall, putting her head down between her hooves. “For Trixie.” Starlight yawned, attempting to sleep the discomfort away. Starlight awoke several times throughout the night. The wagon’s wood floor was causing her back to ache. Starlight’s eyes wandered amongst the room. No sign of any key. Starlight struggled to her feet, pulling a splinter out of her hoof. Her eyes wandered toward Trixie’s bed. “If I don’t wake her, I’m sure she won’t mind!” Starlight lowered her voice, edging toward Trixie’s bed. “We’re… Best friends after all!” Starlight climbed softly onto Trixie’s bed, trying her best not to nudge the other unicorn awake. It was difficult when her bed creaked every time Starlight so much as shuffled about. Starlight lay back into Trixie’s pillow, looking over at the snoozing unicorn. “I really hope you’re okay Trix.” Starlight murmured to herself, finally taking in the darkness. Starlight’s eyes fluttered open. A ray of light streamed through Trixie’s open window. Starlight gasped quietly as she felt something against her back. “T-Trixie?” Starlight looked behind her to see Trixie had nuzzled into her. Starlight noticed Trixie had her hooves wrapped around Starlight’s waist. “Are we… cuddling?” Starlight asked without thinking. “Sorry! I meant to whisper!” Starlight only heard soft murmurs from Trixie in response. Starlight lay in Trixie’s hug. Despite the squeeze in Trixie’s tiny bed, there was something overly relaxing about just laying with Trixie. > Chapter 9 > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Starlight awoke to the sound of Trixie yelling. “Are you serious! Why did you get in my bed!?” Starlight fell backward, landing on the floor. She curled in fear, cowering before her friend. Trixie stomped her hoof, knocking over a nearby lamp. “Trixie?” “How dare you! How dare you think that’s okay!” “I’m sorry I didn’t know! I should’ve asked and I’m sorry!” “You should be sorry! But sorry isn’t going to fix this!” “Fix what? Please, Trixie, explain to me!” Trixie shook her head wildly. Pointing a judgemental hoof at Starlight. “You should know how embarrassing this is for me! I told you where the blankets were! Why couldn’t you just listen to me!?” “I don’t understand!” Starlight backed into a corner of Trixie’s wagon. “Don’t tell ANYBODY about this Starlight! NOBODY!” “I won’t. I won’t! Please, please! Don’t be angry!” “GET OUT STARLIGHT GLIMMER.” Starlight ran out the door, tripping down the wagon’s stairs. Starlight wiped the tears from her eyes as she looked back running far from the wagon. Starlight had to run away from Ponyville. She couldn’t show her face to Trixie, to Twilight, to anypony ever again. She was a horrible student, a horrible friend. Starlight ran off the path into the Everfree forest, not even realizing the brambles caught in her tail. Starlight couldn’t see through her tears, or the dark. She lit her horn in a desperate attempt to light the neverending darkness of the Everfree forest. Every attempt ended in her horn fizzling. “What’s going on?! Why isn’t my magic working?!” Starlight shouted, wiping away another set of tears. “Why isn’t my magic working?” Starlight fell to the forest floor in exhaustion, covering her face with her hooves. “What did I do wrong? How can I ever fix this?” A heavy light streamed in through the branches of the Everfree forest. Starlight could barely look up. Cold howls rang out behind her. Timberwolves. An Ursa. Rebel changelings. She had no magic to defend herself. Starlight got up with her remaining strength, scanning the area for an open pathway. She darted toward a spot between the trees, squeezing her eyes shut and forcing herself in between the tiny space. Starlight’s eyes flickered open, she was greeted with a soft light. Starlight stepped into the area beyond the trees, noticing a gentle breeze tossing her dulled mane about. Starlight stood in an open field. It looked to be endless. Starlight ran toward what she presumed to be the center. Maybe there she’d find a way out of this forest. She ran quickly, her hooves made no sound against the thick grass. Starlight stopped immediately upon noticing a figure in the distance. “Hello? Is that you Trixie?” She squinted, seeing a deep shade of blue. I’m so sorry Trix. I should’ve asked you and-. Can you ever forgive me?” The didn’t turn around. As Starlight edged closer, she began to recognize the regal pony. A long string tied around a wooden handle hung from her mouth. “Is that a kite?” The figure turned around quickly, surprised by Starlight. “Princess Luna…” Starlight bowed her head. A tidal of relief washed over Starlight. “Forgive me Starlight. I should’ve come to your aid sooner.” Luna released the string, watching the kite fly into the air. “It has been a while since I had flown one of those. I must’ve gotten caught up in it, and-” “Forgive me, Princess Luna. I’ll try my hardest not to dream of kites anymore!" Luna smiled, respectively holding up her hoof to silence Starlight. “Don’t worry. It was my fault and not yours.” Starlight looked up tentatively, bowing to Luna again after. “So this is just a dream?” Luna smiled. She cleared away the field of fluff to reveal the spacial dream realm. “Why. Why was that dream so horrible Luna? I was so scared… and” Luna covered Starlight protectively with her wing, hoping to calm the terrified unicorn. “The truth is I’m unsure what caused your nightmare. To be honest I came into your dream to ask for your aid.” A hefty wingbeat filled Starlight's ears. Luna ascended to the sky, pulling a dream bubble toward Starlight. “Trixie is having nightmares also. Troubling ones. I came to ask you about it.” “You came to me?” Starlight’s eyes widened, honored by Luna’s confession. “Of course. You are Trixie’s closest after all.” Luna’s voice echoed throughout the endless dimension. Starlight blushed, trying to hide her nervousness. “What can I do to help?” Luna shook her head. “You already have.” “What do you mean?” “After viewing Trixie’s dreams I see now you don’t trust yourself enough. Now it is time for that to change.” “Your Highness, I don’t understand. How do I help Trixie? May I see her dream?” “I don’t think that will be necessary. It would be unseemly for me to share the content of a dream without Trixie knowing. Starlight nodded understandingly. “How will I know how to help?” “You mean a lot more to Trixie than you think.” Starlight looked up at Luna, still uncertain of her actions. “Can I wake up now?” “That would be best.” > Chapter 10 > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Starlight awoke in a cold sweat. She found herself in Trixie’s bed, her hoof being held by Trixie. “Are you okay?!” Trixie inquired, checking Starlight’s temperature excessively. “You were crying in your sleep!” Starlight quickly pulled Trixie in for a proper hug, trying not to cry, as it would be the millionth time that night. Trixie was silent for a moment, but then quickly pulled away bursting into an uproar. “Well! Are you okay?! You had me so worried!” “Yes, I’m fine Trixie. Honestly!” “Good.” Trixie huffed to herself. "You better be!" Starlight sunk under Trixie’s covers hiding her embarrassment, the thoughts of her dream were still hard to swallow. “So, you’re not angry at me coming into your bed?” “What? Why would I be? Have you forgotten the very important fact that we are-” “Best friends?” Starlight exclaimed. Trixie nodded, not making eye contact. “I thought you’d forgotten for a second. Good to know I can rely on you.” Starlight nodded back, smiling as she watched Trixie lay down next to her. The sun fell through the curtains, dappling on the two sleepy ponies. "Trixie. What have you been dreaming of?" Trixie blushed, her eyes darting around nervously. “What are you talking about? Just me being great and powerful and all!” “Trixie. I know something is up. If you can’t tell me then-” "Where are you even getting this from! Trixie could care less about dreams." Starlight softened her tone. "I met Luna last night. She told me it was serious." Trixie rolled her eyes. Starlight could tell she was hiding her surprise. “Fine! If it means you’ll stop hassling me about it I’ll tell you!” Trixie stuck up her nose. “Well. You know the day at the spa?” Trixie tapped her hooves together as a filly would. Starlight could tell Trixie was flushed with embarrassment. “Well. It's just. I had this dream a few nights ago of you leaving me at the spa." Starlight raised an eyebrow. “That’s it?” Trixie scoffed. “You know you could act more sympathetic! I'm not done!” Starlight put a hoof on Trixie’s shoulder, comforting her. "Go on." "Well. You ran away after that Starlight. I must've said something wrong and. You refused to explain it to me. I didn't know what I did wrong. I was scared you would never speak to me again." “You know I’d never leave you.” Starlight giggled. The traumatic scene from last night was now becoming comical. Trixie hid her face with her hoof, brushing away a strand of her mane. “It’s just. You’re so talented and, you’re my first friend and I thought maybe.” "You thought maybe, what? I'd just up and leave you?" "Well! Yes!" Trixie flailed about. "When you knew the truth about how I felt. About you." "I think we need to work on our communication." Trixie nodded solemnly. "Yeah. I think we should." Starlight felt something bubble in her chest. She pulled Trixie in close, kissing her softly. Trixie leaned in wrapping her arms around Starlight tightly. Trixie seemed hesitant to let Starlight go after the kiss. The two lay together a bit longer. "I hope that said enough. I think I love you." "It did and. I think I love you too." Starlight nuzzled Trixie, and the two spent the rest of the afternoon waking up slowly.
