Luna's catching up

"Another test?" Twilight Sparkle scrambled around her library, frantically picking up every scrap of paper and quill she could find. "Why,oh why can't she tell me what kind of test it's going to be? She has to know how stressful it is to simply hear 'a test of your progress' with nothing to go on."

Spike sighed loudly, not that it would be noticed. "Twilight, we've been through this all before, you know Princess Celestia isn't going to throw you into something you're not prepared for. You had an entire song about it, remember?"

"Spike." Twilight paused her freaking out to glare at the baby dragon. "This is Princess Celestia, caretaker of the SUN. I can NOT let her down."

Spike rested a claw on Twilight's shoulder. "And you won't. Freaking out and worrying isn't going to make you any better at whatever test she's giving you. Just be the student she's been raising, and you'll do fine."

Twilight visibly calmed down. "Thanks spike. I just wish I knew what was coming."

"You want what?" Twilight's jaw nearly hit the floor once she heard Celestia's request.

Celestia gave a mild chuckle. "I know it's doesn't seem like much of a test of your current skill, but I need somepony I can trust to handle something I can't."

Twilight couldn't arrange her thoughts properly, the request and the explanation just didn't seem to mesh together. "You want me to share my letters to you with Princess Luna? Did something happen? Why-"

Twilight was cut off by Celestia dropping several large stacks of parchment at her hooves. "I understand it seems odd, but I think the lessons in these letters will do my sister good. However, I can't seem to get her to read them. As happy as I am to have my sister back, our relationship will never be the same after what happened. I have a lot of duties to perform, and need someone trustworthy with the task. Are you up to it?"

Twilight stared at the stacks of parchment for a couple seconds, wondering what to do. "I'll do it." She replied. She still had no plan, but she couldn't let her teacher down.

"Princess Luna?" Twilight knocked on the door to the princess'room. She received permission from Celestia, being told that Luna would be awake, despite rumors.

Luna opened the door. Twilight was surprised to find the great princess of the moon looking quite disheveled. Luna's normally flowing starry mane and tail were now stringy and messy. Luna's normal collar was missing, and instead she wore a loose T-shirt with a straw hat printed on it. Her hooves were covered in an orange dust, and her overall demeanor of a noble princess was completely missing.

"Oh, Twilight. What's up?" The princess said somewhat groggily as she dropped her hoof to the floor.
This image, this language, it left Twilight dumbfounded, and almost unsure if she had the right pony."Um, I'm sorry, Princess Luna? I uh, Princess Celestia told me you'd be awake, I can come back at another time if-" Twilight was cut off as the princess slunk back into her dark room.

"No, she was right, I've been awake, come on in." The princess left the door open and wasn't even looking toward Twilight.
Twilight cautiously entered the room and surveyed an almost foreign sight, never imagining it to be in Canterlot castle, much less the room of the princess. Pillows, blankets and sheets covered almost every surface of the room in complete chaos, there was a corner of the room where trash was piling up, and everywhere else seemed to be covered in trash that wasn't completely done with yet. The centerpiece of the room was a small television, practically the only source of light in the room. Luna was sprawled out on a mound of pillows and blankets right in front of it, an orange bag right at her hooves. Twilight had to resist every screaming urge to fix everything. This was an absolute monstrosity of a room, and she worried if Rarity had ever laid eyes on it, she might actually die.

"So sis sent you my way did she?" Luna said without looking away from the screen.

Twilight stuttered over a response, still trying to hold herself together at the sight. "u- I um, yes. We were hoping you-well.." Twilight was at a loss for words that gave her a better understanding of Fluttershy. What was she supposed to say? 'Read my letters I never addressed to you?'

"It's fine Twilight, sis wants you to have me read the letters, right?" Twilight was taken off guard, unsure if she was even necessary here.

"Well, yes!" Twilight was gaining confidence, maybe Luna would take care of everything and-

A loud moan from Princess Luna shut down that train of thought in a jiffy. "I've read them, at least some of them, and I get it, they're nice lessons and everything, but I've got things to do."

Twilight didn't want to, but had to ask. "What was the last one you read?"

Luna mulled it over in her head and replied "Dear Princess Celestia, I didn't learn anything! I was right all along."

Twilight was stunned. "Luna, that was almost six years ago."

"Oh, is that like, a lot?" Princess Luna looked to Twilight with a glare. Twilight couldn't help but blush with embarrassment as she realized. Luna continued "Twilight, I get it, I do. The letters you've sent to my sister are really great, but I've been gone for a thousand years. I've got a lot to get caught up on, and I just don't have time."

Twilight was starting to understand Celestia's request, but still didn't understand why things had gotten this way. "What are you getting caught up on then?" Twilight asked with surprising force. "What's so important that you're living like this? Awake twenty hours a day, and not leaving your room for so much as lunch?"

Princess Luna turned away from Twilight, and almost inaudibly replied "A-anime.."

Twilight was shocked. "How long does that take?" Asked Twilight, not knowing what she was getting herself into.

Luna's eyes lit up like the stars she protected. "You have no idea. Detective Conan, One Piece, Gintama, Fairy Tail, I've been away for a thousand years, and I've been missing so much, I would love to get caught up with you and Celestia too,but..Come here, you have to see this."

Princess Celestia had left Twilight to her work, and it was getting to be time for the moon to rise. She couldn't understand how cartoons would take up so much of her sister's life, but once she had listened to the great lessons and adventures of the real world, she would make herself more available for it, and maybe get back on track with her responsibilities. Princess Celestia reached her sister's door and knocked.

"Luna, it's time for the moon to rise."Celestia announced.

To her surprise she heard her usual melodramatic moan, but another alongside it. Luna swung open the door with an angry look on her face as she walked past. Celestia could see into the room and saw Twilight wearing a loose T-shirt with large glasses printed on it, her mane and tail messy and her hooves covered in an orange dust.

"Make it quick Luna!" Twilight shouted. "I'm watching them reach Sky Island, and I'm not pausing it!"

Twilight's eyes met with Princess Celestia. Celestia was the first to speak. "I thought I could trust you to bring my sister back into the real world."

Twilight's eyes narrowed as she pointed her hoof toward the television. "But have you seen this world?"

Luna returned in a gallop,"ThemoonisoncoursethanksSis."She said as she jumped into the room and landed in the pile of pillows. "what'd I miss?"

Twilight's smile beamed harder than ever. "Okay so-" She began.

Celestia watched in horror as her prized student had fallen to the dark side. Then again perhaps there's a lesson in friendship to be learned here. Hopefully Twilight can find a moment to write it down within the next thousand years.
