> Written in the Stars > by Bronyxy > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- > 1 Fellow Stargazers > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- A soft blue glow emanated from the solitary figure silhouetted against the darkening sky, as far away, suns and galaxies moved under its magical bidding.  With the last few lights at the right brilliance and in their correct places across the nocturnal sphere, Princess Luna stood back to admire her handiwork.  She had long since accepted that her arrangements were principally for her own satisfaction as precious few ponies were ever out at this time, and those who were rarely turned their heads upwards to marvel at the magnificence of the night sky; her night sky. Whilst it was generally accepted that she would conduct the formal duties of raising and lowering the moon from the Royal Castle at Canterlot, she preferred the freedom to express her creativity from wherever gave her inspiration.  More often than not, this was away from the distractions of the city, somewhere where she could commune with nature and tap in to the subtle influences at her disposal. Being the only pony capable of dream walking, Luna was a very good barometer of social harmony; when tensions ran high, then her night would be filled with bringing solace to large numbers of troubled individuals who would be ready to adopt a more understanding conciliatory stance to their problems on the next day.  Tonight was different; ponies were mostly content with their lot and so she had time to spare, choosing to treat herself to the rare luxury of flying down to Ponyville, home to a number of her closest friends. With the sky now meeting her approving eye from all angles, she chose to loiter a while around a few of her favourite haunts, reliving some of her happiest memories.  Turning a corner, lost in reverie, she was suddenly surprised to see a pony still out, and more than that, looking up admiring her night sky.  As she got closer she could see that the pony was holding a drawing pad in her blue aura. The moonlight glowed off the immaculately presented white coat and reflected the sheen of a beautiful purple mane and tail.  Luna didn’t need to look at the cutie mark to verify who this was up so late, but nonetheless she couldn’t help her eye involuntarily tracing down the perfectly rounded flank to the three blue diamonds she knew would be there. Luna had no wish to startle the novice stargazer, so introduced her presence in a soft respectful tone as she approached: “Good evening Rarity” “Oh Princess” she gasped in surprise, almost dropping her sketches “I … I wasn’t expecting to see anyone …” “I hope you are not disappointed?” replied Luna. “Oh Princess, no!” she bubbled enthusiastically “It’s so beautiful; I wanted to preserve it forever and maybe even use it for a range of new designs” “I am most flattered.  Would you care to show me your sketches?” “Oh, um … I’m not sure if they really do your work justice” flustered Rarity.  She felt herself turning pink and was grateful that the darkness covered her embarrassment, but Luna picked up on the tone in her voice and read her like a book. “Follow my hoof” said Luna edging close to the fashion designer and pointing into the sky “That is a new feature I have created this night.” Rarity carefully put down her sketch pad on a stool she had brought out with her and looked up in wonder at the delicate cluster of swirls that she had never seen before. “You created that?” she gasped, her eyes as wide as saucers. “Yes” she replied simply “I felt that corner of the sky to be in need of brightening up.” “Does it have a name?” asked Rarity incredulously. Luna thought and looked around briefly: “How about The Carousel Constellation?” she proposed. “Oh, surely not!” squeed the white unicorn squeezing her cheeks together with her forehooves “Really?” “It has to be called something, and the swirls do form a carousel shape” said Luna turning to face her beguiled companion. Rarity buried her muzzle into the older mare’s neck, tears brimming in her eyes as, repeating “Thank you, thank you, thank you!” Luna put a foreleg round the overwhelmed fashion designer and drew her in tight, giving her the lightest of kisses that Rarity did not feel, but just heard and pressed in tighter in response. Once she had regained her composure, Luna asked again about her sketching, and feeling a much closer bond between them felt the courage to show her, albeit amidst protestations that it was incomplete and should not be judged at this stage. “If you see here” she said pointing at specific details on the costume sketches “The background material is a dark purple to represent the blank canvas of the night sky and these overlays are supposed to capture the stars.  There are different transparent layers, each carrying details from the sky, and all free to move over one another to create a subtly changing perspective … or at least that’s the plan.” Rarity was aware she had got carried away and when she paused for breath, looked into Luna’s eyes and hesitated, something in her countenance reaching out in a way she had never experienced before and causing the next volley of words to stick in her throat. Luna could have broken the brief silence that fell between them, but chose to embrace it instead for a few moments longer, relishing the expectancy projected from the dressmaker’s beautiful deep blue eyes. “I feel most honoured that our premiere fashion designer should have chosen to apply her talents so ably to immortalising the pageantry of the night sky that so few ever choose to see for themselves.  I hope I may be privileged to witness these designs develop into your next best-selling range.” At such praise from the Princess of the Night herself, Rarity felt overcome with a wave of delirium that requested, if not demanded the immediate attentions of a fainting couch, but which in her planning she had carelessly forgotten, so instead plomped down on the stool she had brought outside. The Princess giggled discretely and excused herself, leaving the ecstatic fashion designer to rationalise what had just happened.  As far as she could see, Princess Luna had just created a new constellation in the night sky and named it after her, and if that were not enough she had approved the new night time inspired line of fashions; she would be swooning for the rest of the evening. Luna conducted the rest of her nocturnal duties with a little more flair than usual, skipping through her regular responsibilities with a happy smile in place.  It was so unusual to find another pony who had such an interest in her creativity that she felt positively buoyant and looked upon her own work with an even more critical eye than usual, because it was no longer just for herself, but for Rarity too. All too soon, the night time ended and she was obliged to lower the moon to rest, making way for the sun to encourage the ponies of Equestria from their slumbers.  She always felt a twinge of sadness at having to say goodbye to the night, but this morning she was eagerly planning ahead to what displays she could muster to impress her audience on the next evening. As was customary on transferring responsibility for the safety of Equestria between the realms of the sun and the moon respectively, she headed for the prepared dining table where her sister waited.  She trotted briskly to conclude what would be her last official activity of the night and the first of Celestia’s day, providing an opportunity for each to brief the other on events that may be of importance during the forthcoming watch. She seated herself at table with a swish of panache unseen by her sister since before her banishment over a thousand years ago.  As a consummate politician, Celestia was used to reading the body language of others who were far more adept at hiding their feelings, and this new-found happiness and accompanying boost to herself-confidence was flashing like a beacon.  Something had clearly happened and she had the feeling that it wouldn’t be long in coming out. “Good morning, Sister” breezed Luna brightly, notwithstanding her having just finished her night shift. “Good morning to you too dear Luna” greeted Celestia with a warm smile “How was the night?” “It was wonderful Sister” she effused, her eyes taking on a faraway look “Just wonderful!” “How so?” prompted the white mare. “Everything went well; the stars followed my will obediently, but more than that I found I had a secret admirer ...” There was a pause as Luna suddenly realised she had said too much. Celestia knew it wasn’t protocol but slipped her elbows onto the table and rested her chin on her hooves, smiling devilishly at her younger sister across the table accompanied by the clear unstated message ‘I’m going to stay here until you tell me everything.’ Luna was cornered and could feel herself starting to blush; not something that was immediately obvious to anypony else because of her blue coat; but her sister knew her all too well. “Go on” she prompted, her smile widening as a roguish sparkle twinkled in her eyes. “I … I do not consider it appropriate to betray confidences” she stammered. “Now I really am interested” said Celestia, fixing her with her mischievous stare “What has my little sister been getting up to?” “Merely some perfectly innocent appreciation of one creative designer by another.” “Why then do you blush so?” “I do not know what you are talking about Sister” said Luna, feeling herself getting uncomfortably warm all of a sudden. “Didn’t you say you were going to Ponyville last night?” enquired Celestia, probing deeper. “I believe my dinner is ready to be served” interjected Luna as a diversion, beckoning the waiter over with a degree of desperation in her eyes. “I don’t believe they’re ready quite yet” said the white mare dissuading the waiter with a flash of her eyes.  He faltered mid step and quickly bustled back to where he had started, well aware that a situation was brewing between the two most powerful ponies in Equestria.  Although he didn’t want to take sides, Celestia’s stare had been by far the more assertive signal from either of the two Princesses, so it was her that he obeyed. “Now let me see” mused Celestia wickedly “A designer in Ponyville.  Hmmm …” Luna was now unbearably hot and wishing she could be somewhere else. “Oh my” toyed the Sun Princess “Surely not …” “SISTER!” Luna admonished, reverting to her olden tongue in a moment of stress “Mine affairs are mine own!” “Of course, and I shall respect them entirely” admitted Celestia, and then cheekily added one more word “Darling …” She knew. Luna hadn’t even managed to hold out for a full minute under her sister’s scrutiny. “Oh look, Luna” said Celestia innocently “I do believe the waiter is ready to bring your dinner now.” Now she had learned what she wanted, she beckoned the waiter over and he approached warily, eager to perform his serving function with the minimum of ceremony so he could escape as quickly as protocol would allow. “Sister” hissed Luna venomously “There is a word for you …” “Yes” she acknowledged, changing her expression in a flash to one that radiated genuine warmth “I am a caring sister who doesn’t want to see you hurt.  I’m sorry I teased, but I doubt that you would have been quite so forthcoming if I had just waited.  I am very happy for you – really.” “But Sister" she pleaded defensively “We only admired each other’s work.” Luna knew it sounded hollow, even though it was mostly true. Celestia gave a knowing smile in response and Luna mentally face-hoofed, but she knew the more she argued, the worse it would sound. Having recognised that she may have come over as a little too prying, Celestia regaled her younger sister with some of the funnier events that had arisen in the Court recently, patently embellishing some of the details for comedic effect as she worked to win her audience round.  By the end of the meal, the earlier animosity had made way for good natured two-way interchange, both mares laughing at each other’s anecdotes. When they had concluded, the two sisters rose and shared a nuzzle, parting on good terms as Celestia faced a packed schedule of formal commitments ahead while Luna retired to her bedchamber, still giggling to herself at some of the funny stories she had heard.  However, once she was in bed with her eyes closed, it was not Celestia who came into her mind, but an elegantly coiffured white unicorn. > 2 Time, Love and Couture > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- At the same time as Luna went to bed, Rarity awoke and took stock of what had happened the previous evening.  She lay in her bed, quite content to relive the wonderful meeting with Princess Luna the night before, still unable to believe the interest that she had shown in her dress designs. The privilege of sharing so much quality time with the Princess in person had been simply overwhelming, in fact she still felt dizzy thinking about it even now and reached over for a pillow that she drew close to herself and hugged tight, giggling like a filly.  The Princess had been so kind and so supportive in her endeavours and even created a whole new constellation, just for her.  How giddy that made her feel! She dared for a brief moment to consider how a future meeting could go between them; they had been close; not just a meeting of artistic temperaments united in mutual admiration of each other’s abilities, but also physically close and it had felt good, it had felt right. “Oh Rarity, you naughty filly!” she said to herself giggling some more. Throughout the entire day, the fashion designer applied herself with a fervour to her new range of dresses she had decided to call ‘The Princess of the Night Collection’ and hoped Luna would approve.  She wanted to have the dress designs finalised so that if they were to meet again tonight, as she sincerely hoped they would, she would be ready to showcase the range. Opalescence started mewing pitifully around midday to remind Rarity that she wanted feeding, an interruption without which her mistress would have happily worked through continuously until nightfall.  All day long she focused hard on the new wardrobe, humming happy songs and occasionally congratulating herself or telling herself off for some intricate feature of the designs, always immersing herself again immediately afterwards with renewed vigour. Although she had absent-mindedly had something to eat when she had fed Opalescence, she had otherwise seen the whole day fly by from within her bubble of rapt attention, utterly unaware of anything else happening around her.  Finally, she straightened up and let out a little gasp as she stretched, looking to the clock in horror; it was almost dark! She wanted to look nonchalant for the anticipated arrival of Princess Luna again tonight and poured herself a glass of her favourite wine, just to help her relax.  It tasted good; so good that she poured herself another and then once having assured herself that the drawings were all secure and arranged in the correct order, she adjourned outside to admire the onset of night. Night, she suddenly realised, had always been her favourite time of day.  Or was that because she had suddenly developed a deep interest in the Princess herself?  No, she was sure it had always been her favourite time.  The wine tasted very good and she abruptly realised that she hadn’t eaten anything in a very long time; but equally that she couldn’t stop to prepare herself something now in case she missed the arrival of Princess Luna.  She rolled the name around in her mouth and in her head and giggled.  Her glass was empty again.  Time for another refill; just one more. A short while later, with the moon high in the sky, the graceful silhouette of a regal alicorn descended towards Carousel Boutique, her wings flaring just before landing so that she touched down with barely a sound.  Waiting for her was an immaculate white unicorn with a glass of wine by her side. “Good evening Princess” she greeted warmly “I’m sho pleased to see you again.” “Good evening, Rarity” she replied, overlooking the slight slurring “I too have been looking forward greatly to seeing you and your progress with the new dresses.” “Your night shky looks lovelier than ever” continued Rarity leaning back to appreciate it all in one large vista and slightly misjudging her point of balance. Luna rushed forward to catch her as she elegantly tipped over backwards, white forehooves outstretched as if embracing the entire sky.  Rarity found herself giggling at the soft embrace she found herself in and whilst on one level feeling a little embarrassed, on another she was quite happy for it not to end.  In the back of her mind, something was trying to tell her this was not alright, but this was a voice she definitely didn’t want to listen to tonight. Luna spied a pair of glasses and a bottle of wine set on one side and hazarded a guess as to what had happened before she had arrived, a reconstruction which whilst not accurate in every detail still delivered her to the same conclusion. “Come Rarity” she soothed “You have had a busy and I dare say industrious day, but perhaps now is the time to go inside?” Rarity’s mind, assisted by a few too many glasses of wine had toppled at the same time she had overbalanced and her composure was taking a turn for the worst.  Still within Luna’s embrace, she tilted her head even further backwards until their eyes met, then burst out laughing because the Princess appeared upside down … “Did you know your head is upside down?” she asked in mock solemnity before being overtaken with bouts of laughter once again. Luna gently propped up the exhausted fashion designer, careful to hold her securely lest she overbalance again.  Rarity felt liberated by the firmer embrace and in response turned to wrap her forehooves round the startled Princess and before she could react, planted a deep kiss on her lips. Although such an act was something that Luna had long desired, she knew these were not the circumstances in which she should be responding in kind; seducing an inebriated pony, even a willing one had the potential to play out very badly. Reluctantly, she pulled away from the affection and half walked, half dragged her giggling friend into the boutique where they were greeted by indignant meows from a very grumpy looking white cat who was pawing at an empty food bowl. Luna thought briefly about using her magic, but didn’t want to encourage a magical response from the inebriated unicorn just in case things escalated into a barrage of spells and counterspells of unpredictable outcome.  Rarity had to be put to bed to sleep off her excesses before she could get herself into any further trouble. “Which way to your bedroom?” she asked, immediately regretting the suggestive connotations of her innocent request. “Oh Princess!” gasped Rarity “I accept!” It was now Luna’s turn to be dragged along by the eager white pony, who led her briskly if slightly inaccurately upstairs and into her bedroom.  She stopped and turned to face her intended seductress, looking deep into her eyes; “Take me any way you want Princess!  Don’t hold back!” At this request, a blue aura emanated from Luna’s horn and Rarity drifted from consciousness for her own good. “Another time perhaps” whispered the Princess, smiling sweetly at the beautiful fashionista and levitated her into her bed, tucking her in carefully, turning out the light and soundlessly closing the door behind her. Angry stares from a petulant white cat met her as she tiptoed downstairs; her next duty was clear also.  A brief look around showed her where the kitchen was, but in spite of looking in every cupboard there was no sign of cat food.  Sensing that she was next on the priority list but still in imminent danger of not being fed, Opalescence stalked into the kitchen, tail raised high, to stand beside a box hidden behind rain clothes, from where she meowed loudly. “Ah, I see” said Luna who levitated the contents and deposited a generous portion into the food bowl and proceeded to fill her water too. “A ‘thank you’ would have been in order” she mused to herself, a wry smile spreading across her face. With her duties completed, Luna caught sight of a pile of sketches and took the opportunity to flip through them.  There was a large body of work showing a cleverly conceived and beautifully crafted range of designs all based around a common theme of the night sky; there was no doubting the vision Rarity had and the talent with which she had developed the themes into such elegant dresses.  Then there was the name: ‘The Princess of the Night Collection’; she flushed a little with the honour this bestowed and gently put everything back in its place. Now she had put the house back in order, Luna let herself out and looked at the two glasses Rarity had set out for them, noticing not only a part filled bottle but also an empty one next to it.  She poured herself a glass and tasted its reassuringly warming glow as she looked back at Carousel Boutique, allowing her mind to play out how events could have unfolded had her hostess taken better care of herself during the day.  This would be something for another day if Rarity still felt the same way once she had sobered up.  Nurturing fond feelings of what might have been, she stretched her wings majestically and launched herself into the night sky. “How was your night Luna?” enquired Celestia gently with none of the previous day’s inquisition “Did you return to Ponyville?” “Yes Sister, I did.” “And how was your friend?” “Indisposed, I fear” replied Luna. “I trust she will soon recover” sympathised Celestia “And I wish the two of you well.” “Thank you, Sister,” she replied cordially. The rest of the handover was completed with customary formality, and once concluded, Luna excused herself to retire to her bedchamber, her thoughts firmly focused on a beautiful white unicorn many miles away. Rarity awoke to a hammering in her head and groaned. Her memory of the night before was sketchy and incomplete.  She remembered having spent all day completing her sketches and Princess Luna arriving, but then it all got a little cloudy.  Her body was screaming at her to get to the bathroom, but by the same token was extremely reluctant to let her get up.  She vaguely remembered a little sauciness, but couldn’t recall the details or even how she had got to bed.  Reluctantly, the pressure in her bladder forced her to slide out of bed, a task made all the more complex by getting a rear hoof caught in the bedding, causing her to trip forward onto the floor with the grace and dexterity of a Tatzlwurm. She completed her basic bodily functions in just about the right order and then set forth to tackle the day.  Opalescence looked remarkably content which set alarm bells ringing immediately, so she went to retrieve the cat food for her taskmaster, only to find that what she thought should have been a nearly full box was now almost empty.  Slightly perplexed, she decanted sufficient for her breakfast and then went to make her own, not that she fancied too much.  Black coffee; that was what she wanted. Once sobered up, Rarity went to look back at her sketches.  She couldn’t remember if she had shown them to the Princess or not, but flipped back through them all and confirmed that she was still broadly happy with them anyway; just a few little tweaks needed here and there.  She put them back down again and then checked her projects board to see what she needed to catch up on from the day before and gave a sigh; it would be another busy day. > 3 Secrets Shared > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Luna rose ahead of her usual time and presented herself to her sister in advance of their scheduled evening handover meeting. “Luna, I wasn’t expecting to see you so soon; is anything the matter?” “Good afternoon Sister” she replied “I seek to raise the moon from Ponyville tonight and must begin my journey soon if I am to arrive in time.  Are there any issues of significance for me arising from this day?” “Nothing that can’t wait” smiled Celestia “Go enjoy yourself with a clear conscience.” “Thank you Sister, I shall.” The two gave each other a brief nuzzle and then Luna set off for Ponyville once more. The sun was getting low in the sky when she arrived over Ponyville and flared to make a perfect landing outside Carousel Boutique.  She walked the last few steps to the door and gave it a push, hearing the bell tinkle above her. “Right with you” chimed a familiar voice from the workshop. Luna looked around and noticed that the display had changed since the night before, admiring the new couture that Rarity had put on display.  From her position on a cushion, a pampered white cat looked up and smiled; the blue alicorn would forever be associated with large portions of food and was an instant friend. “Hello, and what can I do for …”  Rarity stopped in mid-flow “Oh Princess, how lovely to see you again.  I’m afraid I must apologise for my behaviour last night; I don’t know what came over me.  I hope we’re still friends …” “Dear Rarity, no apology necessary.  You had worked so hard on your new range of dresses that you just got a little over-tired.” “I’m sorry, but I don’t remember everything I said or did last night.  I hope I didn’t embarrass you …” “Not at all.  In fact, you were very generous.  Now I should like to repay the compliment if I may.  Can you close up for the day?” “Oh sweet Celestia!" gasped Rarity checking the time "I hadn’t realised how late it had got.” “Good, then follow me when you’re ready.” Luna led Rarity out of the door, sat down on her haunches and spread her wings. “What are you doing Princess?” she asked nervously. “Tis an invitation for you to mount me” replied Luna matter-of-factly. “Pardon?” asked Rarity, incredulous. “I wish to take you for a flight” she clarified. “Oh … I see” said the dressmaker climbing carefully onto the blue body before her. Luna launched herself into the air as Rarity giggled with delight.  She had experienced having wings fleetingly before and secretly wished she had a pair on call for her use whenever it suited, but that was not to be.  They soared over the Everfree toward the ruins of the Castle of the Two Sisters and put down in the courtyard, where her passenger dismounted, filled with exhilaration after a wonderful treat. “Why have you brought me here?” she asked. “This is where I grew up.  I consider it home far more than Canterlot ever will be.  Come, follow me.” Luna led Rarity through the old castle and up a few flights of stairs that led onto an imposing balcony with a beautiful view of the sunset. “If you would like to watch, I shall perform the traditional ritual of summoning the moon to rise into the sky.” “Oh, please!” said Rarity, clapping her forehooves together. “Come stand by my side and you and I will be the first to see the moon rise tonight.” The white mare moved forward to stand close to Luna who reciprocated by pressing into her, sending a shiver of expectation through Rarity’s body.  A blue aura formed around her horn, electrifying the space around her; the space occupied by her guest, who gasped in pleasure.  Luna smiled appreciatively and turned her focus to the moon, drawing it from its slumber and sending it on its way across the sky. “Princess … I …” gasped Rarity, clearly with something personal on her mind. “Would you like to see something very precious to me?” asked Luna. The white mare was speechless, but her wide eyes spoke volumes as she gently nodded her head. “Come, follow me.” Once more, Luna led the way through old passageways and up a further flight of stairs.  No words were exchanged as Rarity’s heart raced with anticipation.  Finally, they arrived at a closed door, the same blue aura reaching out to unlock it for the first time in over a thousand years.  There was a click and then a long drawn out squeak as protesting hinges were summoned from their long repose. “This was my bedchamber” said Luna allowing Rarity in to see for herself.  It was very grand but a little musty and showing clear signs that time had not treated it kindly. “It’s magnificent!” gasped Rarity in awe, trying to take in the period décor. “This, this is where I consider home, but you are the first pony I have shared it with in countless generations.” Rarity pressed her body against her and gave her a squeeze, “Thank you for showing me Princess.  It means a lot to me that you should want to share it with me.” “You gave me your heart and soul in your beautiful dress designs and had the kindness to name the range after me.  It is the least I can do” said Luna in a hushed tone. “Princess …” whispered Rarity quietly, turning to face her, her eyes glowing with an intensity of passion that Luna had not seen in a long time. "I will show you one more thing, if you wish” said Luna, not leaning in to the kiss that Rarity so desperately wanted, but she understood the cue. The blue aura spread once more from her horn and a doorway appeared in the wall, the door opening at her magical touch. “You may enter if you wish, Rarity.” Overcome with curiosity, she entered as Luna knew she would and gasped at what she saw. “My sister was always wary of my abilities as a dream walker; it meant that I could see into anypony’s innermost thoughts and dreams.  She developed very astute abilities at gaining information from others through different means, a talent that serves her well in the politics of Equestria to this day.  I however, needed to have somewhere she did not know about for my own personal reasons.  This then is my secret place.  It can only be detected and opened by my magic.  While you are within, you are not trapped and can leave at any time, but may never come back in without me.” Rarity looked around the secret bedroom.  It was as pristine as if it had just been freshly prepared.  The only thing that gave away that it had remained untouched for generations was an oil painting of a pink unicorn on the dresser. “Who’s that” asked Rarity in a hushed tone. “She was my last true love” said Luna wistfully “I have been to her grave since my return and laid fresh flowers for her. I believe she went on to marry and have foals, but she will forever have a special place in my heart.” A tear started to form in the corner of her regal eye as she hung her head. “Princess …?” asked Rarity, closing up to give her a hug. “I do not give my heart easily, Rarity” she replied. “Then I hope I am worthy” whispered the white mare giving Luna the softest of kisses on her lips. She pulled away gently and reclined onto the large bed, fixing the Princess of the Night with her deep blue eyes.  Luna looked at her longingly, daring to believe that she may have found true love once more and joined her on the bed, her wings stiffening with anticipation. Morningtide brought with it the need for Luna to perform her duty of lowering the moon once more to make way for Celestia’s sun.  There were still a few hours before she needed to attend to this task and so she gently woke her new marefriend. “Hmmm …?” queried Rarity, roused from her sleep. “Would you like to come to Canterlot to see the sun rise?” she asked. “Oh darling …” began the white mare “Anything to be with you.” The two lovers kissed once more, as they had done so many times during the protection of that night. “I shall have to leave a note for Opalescence to be fed” she stated, remembering her responsibilities. “We can send a scroll by dragon mail to Twilight Sparkle” suggested Luna. Rarity rolled over and smiled, “You think of everything darling.” “Actually, yes” came the unexpected reply. Rarity looked up at her lover with an inquisitive expression across her face. “Can you make yourself ready in, say, ten minutes?” asked Luna. “You’re up to something, I can tell” said Rarity “OK, you’re on.” From out of nowhere, she mustered a selection of brushes and proceeded to groom her mane and tail to perfection. “Now do tell; what’s going on darling” she pried. “Follow me” said Luna simply, and led her out to the front of the castle where a chariot awaited. “How did you arrange this?” gasped Rarity. “I arranged the chariot for me before I left” replied Luna “It is just fortuitous coincidence that you happen to be available to accompany me.  Would you like to share my ride?” Rarity was beside herself and went to thank both Bat Ponies personally before getting in alongside her Princess, her lover and her new marefriend. The two snuggled up to each other during the flight.  Rarity had enjoyed riding on Luna’s back, but it would have been uncomfortable to have hung on for such a long journey and she was delighted to be treated like royalty herself.  All too soon they descended through the darkness to the Royal Castle at Canterlot, illuminated with pinpricks of torches against the darkness.  The landing was performed expertly, neither passenger feeling the slightest bump and both emerging feeling rejuvenated. There to meet them was Princess Celestia.  Rarity had met her several times in the years since Twilight Sparkle had come to Ponyville, but this morning it was quite different; no longer merely the Bearer of the Element of Generosity, but Luna’s marefriend.  She trembled a little at the change in relationship with the most powerful alicorns in Equestria, but soon got a grip of herself and settled back to enjoy the experience. “Good morning Sister” said Luna brightly. “Good morning Luna” said the Sun Princess “And good morning to you too Rarity.  It is a pleasure to see you here at Canterlot so early.” “Good morning Princess” replied Rarity, striking the perfect balance between respect and self-assurance. “Unless I speak out of turn” announced Luna “I expect that we shall be seeing more of Rarity in Canterlot in the fullness of time.” The dressmaker blushed noticeably, even in the torchlight. “Good; we could do with an experienced eye over the décor and furnishings in the castle” interjected Celestia, then adding conspiratorially to her new sister-in-law “It’s been years since they were updated, and I can’t wait to see something new!” The two princesses attended to the lowering of the moon and the raising of the sun, both noticing the new-found radiance on Rarity’s face in the morning light. She may not ever have wings of her own, but right now she was flying.
