> Falling > by Maddie Koester > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- > Prologue > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Fifteen years ago, Polished Pebble was living in Ponyville. He had met a few friends; their names were Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon. It turned out that, in time, they both fell in love with Polished Pebble. Neither of the girls knew that the other one loved him, and one night they all went to a concert together. Diamond Tiara confessed her love. Silver Spoon was shocked and thought her "friend" was just being mean. She thought Diamond changed, but maybe she was wrong. Silver Spoon pulled Pebble aside after the concert and confessed her love for him. Diamond over heard and thought Silver was just doing this to hurt her. The two fought until the CMC discovered what was going on and wanted to help. It all went down hill because the CMC didn't understand that both girls loved Polished Pebble. Instead they thought that Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon were going back to their bratty, school filly selves. But both of them had changed, and were kind and friendly. Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon grew apart. And Pebble not wanting to marry either of the girls, moved out of Ponyville. After two years Diamond Tiara and Pipsqueak got married. Silver Spoon fell for Featherweight. And CMC had their own special someponies (Tender Taps, Button Mash, and Rumble). They all had children and now, twelve years later, our story begins. > The Invention > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- I was in the workshop, looking through my inventing journal; I looked over after pile of metal on the table and, with a sigh of defeat headed inside. My mother, Diamond Tiara, was in the kitchen marking dinner. My father, Pipsqueak, was in the living room reading the news. "You came just in time," she said as she took the pot off the stove. Mom poured the soup into bowls and brought them over to the table. Dad and I came over and sat down, while Mom poured the tea. During dinner, Mom tried to start a conversation with me, but I wasn't up for it. My invention wasn't working, and my dream would fail! The rest of dinner was spent in awkward silence. Afterwords, I went to my room and laid in bed. My dream is impossible! An earth pony, like me, becoming a Wonderbolt, as if! I looked at the poster hanging on my wall. It was my dream to become the first earth pony Wonderbolt, but I was losing hope. I wish I was a pegasus instead of a stupid earth pony! Right after that thought, I felt shame rising in me. It didn't matter if I was an earth pony, I shouldn't give up! Just like Rainbow Dash, I won't give up! With my new hope I got ready for a good night's sleep, so i would have extra time to create in the morning! I was so distracted when Mom came in to say goodnight, I never heard her say the first day of school was tomorrow. > Over Shadowed > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- I sat next to my mother as everyone talked about the latest gossip, and I was bored out of my mind. "Silver Spoon, did you hear about the new leader in Saddle Arabia?" Pineapple Crush asked, he was a strange stallion who always came without his wife. I wondered if he had lost her, but mother said it would be rude to ask. Mother never let me ask anything; this made me super excited for school. I finally didn't have to attend all the dinner parties, or lunch parties, or garden parties, or any type of party; unless it's one of Pinkie Pie's, but Mother never let's me, anyway! "Oh, really, I didn't think he was that old! Isn't that amazing, Shining Feather?" Mother's voice broke into my thoughts. Everypony was looking at me, waiting for my reply. "Oh, uh, yeah! That's amazing! I exclaimed, acting like acting like I was following the conversation. The adults went back to talking up a storm. When will this party end?! We have all finished dinner, so why am I still here?I sighed as the adults blabbered on. I looked out the window ready to leave. As soon as we got home, I was sent up stairs to bathe and get ready for school tomorrow. I slipped my supplies into into my bag, turned of the light, and went to bed. Father came in and said goodnight, and told me that Mother wanted me up two hours before we had to leave for school. I'm so ready for school! > School > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mom shook me awake before the sun had even risen. I groaned as she turned on the light. "Why haven't you packed yet?!" she exclaimed. "Are we going on another vacation?" I asked groggily. "No, you have school today! Now, you need to get up and get ready." she told me as I jumped out of bed. The next fifteen minutes were spent rushing around the house, trying to get ready. We were at school by the time the sun rose, and I was pretty proud of myself for being that fast. Mom said good by as I walked to the door. It will be just like last year, but probably more bullies. I thought to myself, as I took a deep breath and walked into school and took a seat. Mother woke me up thirty minutes before school. I got dressed in my light pink silky dress, and went to brush my mane. As I brushed my mane, I accidentally hit my ears. I looked up at them and frowned. Papa and I had unique ears, they were bigger than most ears. Normally, I don't mind but... I just know I'm going to be teased today! It's just like every other year. Mother was putting the waffles on the plate as I came downstairs. They were blueberry, my favorite, and they were delicious! After I finished eating, I grabbed my purple saddle bag and Mother and I headed to school. I saw a lot of other foals as we headed towards the school; there were three foals walking together laughing. Their mothers were watching and they had matching cutie marks! "Do you know them?" I asked Mother as I pointed at the mares. "Don't point, it's rude." Mother replied, ignoring my question. I decided that I should talk to the foals, but then we got to school before I could. It was smaller than the academy, but I was glad because it had a playground! The academy never had a playground! Mother left, and I headed to the front of the school. My heart leaped with joy as I opened the door. There were a few seats left, and the three foals I saw earlier, were sitting next to each other. I took a seat next to a white colt with a pink spot around his eye. He was drawing in a notebook, I wanted to see what he was drawing but then our teacher started to make the announcements. "All right class! Welcome to your first day of school! I'm Mrs. Cheerilee, and I'll be your teacher for the whole year! Doesn't that sound exciting?" she exclaimed. I swear I heard crickets chirping when no pony answered. "Well, seeing is how you are all new here, how about we introduce ourselves to our neighbors!" said Mrs. Cheerilee. I turned to the colt drawing. "Hello, my name's Shining Feather. What's yours?" I asked meekly. "Hi, my name's Platinum Streak. I-" he was cut off by Mrs. Cheerilee. "All, right class, time to begin our lesson! Now, today we are learning... blah blah blah." Mrs. Cheerilee's voice faded. I wanted to keep talking to Platinum Streak, I wanted to make a friend for once. I looked around the class room and saw a white filly with a white coat and honey colored mane looking miserable. The colt next to her looked a lot like her, and he kept whispering to her. I looked at the filly behind me she had a copper colored coat and a cream and teal mane, and I swear that her cold grey eyes were starring me down. The colt on her left had a frey coat and a golden mane. While the filly on the right of her was completely white, except for her bright blue eyes! I shrugged off the feeling that they were watching me and started paying attention to Mrs. Cheerilee. But then I started hearing whispers from the foals behind me. And I completely heard what they were saying! My throat closed up hoping they would stop. I felt like crying. They probably haven't seen ears as unique as mine. I thought. As I focused back on Mrs. Cheerilee I said to myself,Today will be a great day! > Troubled Times > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- The first day of school was nothing more than introducing ourselves and learning about everypony. When the bell rang, I picked up my stuff and started to head out. Platinum Streak, the colt sitting next to me, had rushed out as soon as the bell rang. I wanted to be friends with him since he seemed lonely... like me. He didn't seem to talk much, but I thought that was fine. I set my bag down and sat on a swing in the playground, since mother wasn't here yet. Soon the filly that sat behind me started walking toward me; she was joined by the two honey maned twins! "What were there names? Copper Shill? Honeycomb and Honey Hoof? Oh, I hope those are right!" I thought, as Copper look around and smiled, she saw we were alone. Her eyes sent me a cold stare. "Hi! Nice to meet you, I'm Copper Shell," she smiled. The tone in her voice and that smile, they gave me a knotted feeling in my stomach. "Uh, hi; I'm Shining Feather," I replied. "Well, you do have feathers, but the only thing that shine with you are those ears!" she snickered. Honey Hoof laughed behind her and nudged Honeycomb to join in; she gave a forced laugh. "They're really... Obnoxious!" Honey Hoof snorted. "Copper, time to go!" A voice called. We turned to look at the road. "Their parents are here, thank Celestia!" I thought happily. "This stays between us, and don't think otherwise or there will be problem. Understand, Dumbo?" Copper warned as the three trotted away. "Dumbo? Are my ears really that big?" I questioned myself as I made my way to my mother, who had also just arrived. "Why hello, Bee Heart!" Mother smiled. "Hello, Silver Spoon, I thought you were still in Canterlot!" Bee Heart, the Honeys' mom, exclaimed. She had a white coat with a yellow and black mane, and was a pegasus, unlike her children. "We arrived here over the summer," Mother stated. Then Copper's mother joined the chat; she was light gray unicorn with a grayed purple and pink mane. I sighed, knowing that the conversation would go on for at least ten minutes. "At least I tried to make a friend. Oh, I forgot to talk to those three foals I saw this morning!" I thought. Finally, we headed home and spent the rest of the day like normal, or at least Mother and Papa did. > What To Do > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- I rushed home right after school. The pony next to me seemed like she wanted to talk with me, but I was to busy! There was no time for making friends; I had to keep working on my Pony Copter! Thoughts were running through my head. "I wish I could talk to Rainbow Dash about the Tank Copter, but she would never notice me. I have to find another way! Princess Twilight's in Canterlot so that isn't an option; come on Platinum, think! I pulled out my journal and turned to my most recent idea, The Pony Copter 6.0. It's supposed to work like the Tank Copter, but I can't figure out how to make it work. I kept trying to work it out until Dad came out and called me in for dinner. After, I wanted to continue working, but Mom said we were having a bowling night. We bowled until dark, then we headed back home. And I got ready for bed. It had started to rain lightly as I showered. As I slipped my journal into my backpack I thought "I'll have to work on it during school, I guess... Recess would be the perfect time!" And with that, I hopped into bed and fell asleep with the rain pounding against my window. > Worse > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- The bullying at school continued throughout September and into October. On Nightmare Night they made fun of my costume, I was an artist. They said it was lame and boring, but their costumes were very common and not that creative. They also started to be joined by two other foals in my class, Purity and Golden Trail. The bullying got so bad that they would steal my book on the playground and or steal my homework and write their name on it. They would call me names too, "Big ears", "Dumbo", "Dull Feather", "Blank Flank"; I didn't really understand "Blank Flank", they didn't have cutie marks either. I didn't know what to do... I was so scared! Every time I thought about telling an adult I remembered what Copper Shell said that very first day, "This stays between us, and don't think other wise or there will be problems. Understand, Dumbo?" This made me think about of all the worst scenarios: getting expelled, the adult thinking I was lying, etc. I just sat and let it happen. Eventually it was two weeks until winter break. Hearth's Warming is my favorite holiday! I woke up for school one morning and slipped on my light blue sweater that Mother gave me last year, then I got ready for school. The morning at school started off great in my opinion, but then during recess they came. Copper Shell was in front, Purity and Honey Hoof were behind here. Then in the back was Golden Trail, and Honeycomb. "Hey Dull Feather," Copper Shell called; they called me that because they thought I didn't shine. I didn't respond. "I heard you got a "D" on yesterday's homework; maybe you should go back to kindergarten. You are a baby after all!" she continued. The others laughed along with her, except Honeycomb. She never laughed unless the others weren't watching her. A few foals looked my way, then look away again. Everypony was afraid of them. "Wow, I didn't think you could get any uglier, but that sweater makes you much worse than normal," Copper mused. "You should through it away as soon as possible," Purity snickered. I was on the verge of tears, when a voice I didn't recognize broke through their laughter like a an iron hoof. "I think she looks great," the voice said. We all looked to see who spoke... TO BE CONTINUED... > Is It Over? > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- It was Platinum Streak, the colt who sits next to me in class! Sometimes I forget he's even there because he's so quiet all the time. We all stared in shock as he came up beside me. "This sweater matches complexion and it fits her just right, and she shines brighter than any of you. You guys are just people who can't make yourselves feel good so you make others feel worse, just so you can stand on top of them! Oh, and I heard something about kindergarten. I think you guys would fit perfectly there. After, all you have to steal her work to get good grades," he pointed out. "Stay out of this loser!" Copper growled. "Nah, let's go," he replied and beckoned me to follow him. I got up and walked past them: I can't believe he actually stood up to them. We went over to a bench and sat down. "Hey, thanks for helping me," I smiled. "Well, your not the only they've bothered. Shining Feather? Right?" he said. "Yep, that's me. I had no idea you were bullied bu them too." I commented. "Yeah, I have a dream, but it's impossible. They found out last year and stated bullying me about it," he stated. "What was your dream, or did it change? You don't have to tell me, if you don't to." I grinned. "I-I want to become a Wonderbolt... and I have been trying to make a machine to make me fly. It's stupid, I know," he sighed. "No, it's amazing! I've never known someone who has enough hope to keep trying for over a year! Maybe I can help!" I chirped. "Maybe, do you want to come over after school tomorrow?" he asked. "I'll ask my mother," I said. We spent the rest of the recess talking about his machine. I noticed the bullies watching me all day. Their eyes burned into the back of my head during class. I hoped they realized I wouldn't let let them bother me again. Platinum helped me realize they aren't all powerful. They're normal foals, like me. At the end of the of the day Platinum sat with me on the swings as we waited for all parents. Copper Shell was still there too, staring at us with her cold grey eyes. My mother came first. I packed up my things and went to ask her if I could go to Platinum's house tomorrow. "Yes, you may go to Platinum's house, Shining Feather. But I have to met his parent or guardian first," mother replied. Then a pink earth pony mare arrived, she had a a purple and white mane, as she passed us she glared at my mother. My mother turned her head away only to see Copper Shell's father. He was a dark grey earth pony stallion with a light teal and grey mane and tail. I now saw where Copper Shell got her cold, hard, grey eyes from. "Hi, Silver Spoon! Long time no s-," he started. "I don't want to speak with you Polished Pebble. Let's go Shining. she called as I turned and started to walk away. This Polished Pebble pony looked hurt. I was surprised my mother didn't wait for Platinum's mom to show up. I was also surprised she didn't want to talk to Polished Pebble. "What did he do that my mother is so upset about?" I wondered. When we got home I asked her why we didn't wait for Platinum's mom and why she had refused to talk to Copper's father. She refused to talk about either of the questions, and sent me upstairs to work on homework. "I hope Platinum and I can still be friends. I prayed to myself, as I started to think about his invention. > A New Way > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- When I got home from school, I asked my mom if Shining Feather could com over. "Sure, Platinum, but she can't stay past 5:00," Mom replied. I was so excited; I haven't had a friend in over two years! After finishing homework, I rushed straight to my work shop to clean up. The floor was covered in scrapes, the tables were dusty, and the smell was awful. Soon, night rushed in and I was called inside. I was ready for tomorrow. The school day passed as slow as a slug. When school dismissal bell rang I felt like crying with joy. I picked up my stuff and met up with Shining Feather. She was wearing a light yellow sweater which matched my mood; joy! "Hey, you ready for today?" I asked. She smiled and replied, "I'm so ready! I have an idea for the invention." We started walking to my house. Mom said she had to go shopping for Hearth's Warming. I was hoping for more materials to make the copter with. We were walking in comfortable silence, but i wanted to know more about her. I didn't want to say that directly though. "So... what was your idea for the invention?" I asked. "Well, it depends on what your wanting and already are building." she replied. "I don't have anything built right now. it fell apart, but my basic idea was a helicopter like the Tank Copter. The only problem is that I don't have any magic to make it work and I can't figure out how to make one that can go in multiple directions." I stated. Shining looked like she was concentrating on something. We stepped onto the porch and I pulled the door open. There was a plate of brownies on the counter and a note. "Your house is so cool! My house is full of really nice furniture that I would get in so much trouble if I messed anything up." she said with sigh. Shining Feather wandered off to look around and I went over to the table. The note read: "Platinum, have fun with your friend. The brownies are double chocolate! There are two milk glasses in the fridge . I should be home around 3:30." Shining was in the game room. Dad's computer was on the desk and my tablet was next to it. The pool table was a wreck, and I gave her an awkward smile. "It's messy, I know." I stated. "I don't mind. Let's go eat those brownies; they smell delicious!" she exclaimed. We went over to the table and she sat down while I got the milk. Shining Feather pulled out paper and a pencil out of her bag, and started drawing. I set down the glasses down and took a sip of my milk. We both grabbed three brownies each and gave each other mischievous smiles. "What's that?" I asked pointing at the paper. "My idea for the invention. It's basically a pair of metal wings," she smiled, and showed me the paper. It was a sketch of metal wings and paragraph explaining it. The more I read, the more I loved the idea. "How come I've never thought of this before?! This is genius!" I exclaimed. Shining blushed in response. We finished our brownies and went out to the workshop. Shining looked around and said "Nice place." I grabbed some metal and screws and took them to my work counter. With journal opened at my side, I taped in the picture of the wings. Shining came over and asked "What do we do first?" I turned around and led her to the other side of the table and then sat down, grabbing a pencil. "We start by looking at how your wings work. Can you open them and just do some stuff?" I replied. She nodded and opened her wings and flapped them. I took notes about how her wings moved and my brain started to work out ways to make mechanical wings. We were messing around and having a great time when Mom walked into the workshop. "Hi!" Shining said. "Hello, I'm glad you could come over, but it's about time for you to head home." she replied. "It's five already?!" I asked quite surprised at how time got away from us. "Yep, you two should finish up here." Mom said as she walked out the door. "My mother should be here soon, I should get ready to go." Shining said as she brushed dirt off her sweater. We walked inside and Shining grabbed her saddlebag. While we waited, we talked about school and the Super Flyer; that's the name we cam up with. I hoped we could meet up again before Hearth's Warming. The doorbell rang and mom opened it. We walked over and saw the two mares glaring at each other. "Silver Spoon," Mom said in an unkind tone. "Diamond Tiara. Let's go Shining Feather," her mom responded. Shining's mom tried to hide it but I could her the hate in her voice. I wonder what caused them to hate each other. I've never met her, so it couldn't have been a recent argument or problem. "See you tomorrow Platinum! Shining called as she walked out the door. Mom closed the door as soon as they walked away. "What's with you and Shining's mom?" I asked as she walked into the kitchen. "Nothing for you to be bothered with. Do you have any homework?" she replied. "Nope, and I should be bothered with it. I don't want you hate Shining's mom because Shining's my friend." I said. "We had a problems in the past. We need to go get your father; we're going out for dinner." she ended. We walked out to Dad's work and then got dinner. I planned to talk to Dad when we got home, but I didn't get a chance. I would figure it out though, and I would fix it. > PARTY!!! > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- On the last day of school before winter break, I learned about the yearly Hearth's Warming party. Pinkie Pie threw it in Sugar Cube Corner and it was supposedly one of the biggest parties of the year. Platinum had told me about it; he said it was just a casual party. When I told my mother that, she refused to let me wear my Hearth's Warming sweater. She spent ten minutes digging through my closet to find me something to wear. She had finally decided on a blue sparkling shirt and a black skirt. We walked together to Sugar Cube Corner, then went mother went to her dinner party. I was glad, as I walked in. I saw tons of other ponies. there was music blasting, a table full of desserts , and red and green decorations every where. I walked through the crowd looking for Platinum when I saw Pinkie Pie. she was at the DJ Table talking to Vinyl Scratch. her mane was covered with confetti! Apparently she set off party cannon before the party started. I continued looking for Platinum when someone tapped my shoulder; I turned around to see Platinum smiling. "Hi, do want to grab a bite to eat?" he smiled. "Sure," I smiled back. We walked over to the dessert table. I saw Pineapple Crush, I was confused because I figured he would be at the same dinner party my mother was going too. He was with a peach colored unicorn with a gold mane. She was wearing a cloak. "Do you want some cake?" Platinum asked. I nodded and went to look for Pineapple Crush and the unicorn again, but they were gone. I looked around, but I couldn't see them anywhere. Platinum and I walked over to a table and sat down. "Are you okay?" You seem a bit off," Platinum said. "Oh, yeah, I'm fine. This is a crazy party," I replied. "Not compared to some other ones I've seen," Platinum said with a laugh. We ate our dessert and chatted. I saw some other kids from our school a few times, including Copper Shell and her group. Platinum and I were dancing when I felt someone pump into be.. I turned to see three foals from school; Jazzy Apple, Controller Note, and Hurricane. Jazzy was the one who pumped into me. "Oh mah gawsh, Ahm soo sorry!" Jazzy Apple exclaimed. "It's fine," I replied. They were nice and seemed to be friends with everypony. they were blank flanks like most of us. Only four foals in our class had cutie marks. We walked over to a quieter corner and started to talk. as we talked. As we talked, why everypony wanted to be their friend. they were so nice and were always respectful. They listened to our side of the conversation, and knew how to keep one going. By the end of the night i had three more friends. Hearth's Warming Day was amazing! I got a new notebook, a book, and many more presents. Afterwards we went ice skating. Mother wasn't to into it, but Papa and I had a lot of fun. The rest of the day was family time. I hoped Platinum had fun too. > A New Group > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- The days letting until school started again were spent getting to know Jazzy, Controller Note, and Hurricane. It was really fun with more friends to hang out with; sleepovers were common and their club house was awesome! Today was one of those "Get Together" days. Shining and I almost always walk together to the clubhouse. The clubhouse was a small pink building in an apple tree. When we stepped through the door, we honestly did expect them to jump out and surprise us... "SURPRISE!!!" The three foals shouted. "What going on? What's the surprise?" Shining Feather asked. They had a small podium in the middle of the room and on it were two maroon capes, with a gold emblem on them. Jazzy Apple, Controller Note, and Hurricane were all wearing the exact sames capes, matching the ones on the table. "We're initiating you two into the CMC 2.0!" Controller Note said with a grin. "What is the CMC 2.0?" I asked. "It's a club that our moms made to find their cutie marks when they were our age!" Hurricane replied. " 'CMC' stands for Cutie mark Crusaders, and we added the 2.0 because well..." Jazzy tried to explain. "Because you're the second generation?" Shining Feather suggested. "Exactly!" Jazzy Apple piped. "Cool!" I said. They picked up the capes and handed them to us. Jazzy Apple stepped on to the podium, with Controller on her right, and Hurricane to her left with a pair of drums. "Are you ready?" Jazzy Apple asked. "Yes." Shining and I said in unison. Hurricane started to bang the drums in a rhythmic pattern, and then he just went full on crazy. Then Controller Note handed Jazzy Apple a scroll. "We, the Cutie Mark Crusaders, elect Platinum Streak and Shining Feather to join us as sister and brother, friends, confidantes, allies, bosom buddies, pals, com padres, chum of chums..." Jazzy started. "Can we speed this up?" Controller Note asked. "Who wrote this anyway?" Jazzy Apple inquired. "My mom..." Hurricane muttered. "Oh, well then... Uh... Hometown foals... Amigos... blah blah blah blah blah. Oh, yes, here. ...and fellow Cutie Mark Crusaders! You are solemnly sworn in, here this day, in witness of your fellow sisters and brother, friends, confidantes... bosom buddies... com padres..." Jazzy Apple tried to finish. "Congratulations!" Controller Note and Hurricane shouted. Shining Feather and I shared an amused glance. We all slipped off our capes and ran off to play a game... or so I thought. They actually dragged us into a ton of different activities. It was fun, but also tiring. By the time we had to go home, I was exhausted. Enough so that I was too tired to work on my invention! I had a good night's sleep, dreaming of getting my cutie mark and finishing my invention. > Why? > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Being part of the CMC 2.0 was exhausting, but I had more fun in one week than I had all last year! I was fairly sure I wasn't going to get my cutie mark by going around town and doing random activities, but I was happy to have friends. Since I was always so busy working on my invention, I never had time for friends. These friends were different, they helped me in the workshop; getting parts tools, snacks, and giving ideas were all things my friends help with. The Super Flyer was almost ready to tested out! We couldn't work on it today though, we were going out for ice cream! We had just met up at my house and as we were walking I thought I saw a turquoise tail disappear around the corner. It was probably nothing though. The ice cream was great! I got Rocky Road, Shining got Chocolate Fudge, Jazzy got vanilla, Controller Note got strawberry, and Hurricane got Mint-chip. "So what now?" Shining Feather asked. "We could go zip-lining!" Hurricane replied. "Or paragliding!" Jazzy Apple joined in. "Or bungee jumping!" Controller yelled. "How about we do something less crazy," I suggested. "Like what? We did most of that stuff already with no luck," Hurricane stated. "We can think of something while we head back to my house," I said. "Ok," they said in unison. The three crazy foals shouted ideas the whole way back. So far paragliding sounded the best. We turned the corner onto my street and I saw the door to the work shop hanging open. I'm sure I closed it when we left. Did i forget to close it? We all walked over and peered inside. When I saw the damage my heart dropped and shattered into a million pieces... Everything was blurred, I couldn't hear what everyone else was saying. The Super Flyer was completely destroyed, along with any other thing I had made. I started to cry, and there was no stopping the tears from flowing down my face. Then I felt a hoof on my shoulder; it was Shining. "I'm so sorry, Platinum. We can rebuild it." she offered. "I know, we were just so close, and I was finally going to fly." I said, my face stained with tears. "Yeah, and we'll have twice as fun," Controller piped. I looked at my friends. We had done so much together over the last few months, and I realized that I wanted to build it again with them. I smiled at them and said, "Well, we better get to work then, and show whoever did this that they gave us a new opportunity." Whoever did this... the turquoise tail... "Who would do this, anyway?" Shining asked. "Copper Shell, I saw her." I said, anger sweeping through me. "I'm sure her little group of 'lost puppies' was with her!" Jazzy exclaimed. "Well, let's teach them a lesson!" Hurricane yelled. Controller and Jazzy nodded. "No, I have a better idea. But we have to act like we don't know who did it, though," Shining Feather said with a devilish grin. And was the first time I had ever felt scared around Shining... > Show Time > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- I walked into the classroom and pulled the letter out of saddle bag. Then I slipped it onto Mrs. Cheerilee's desk. Copper Shell walked into in as I sat down; I saw her glance at Platinum and I'm sure she had a small smirk across her face. We spent the day like normal, except for Platinum, poor guy was moping around all day. Finally at the end of the day, Mrs. Cheerilee called me up to her desk. "I looked at your letter, Shining, and I think it's a great idea. Though a little risky." Mrs. Cheerilee smiled, "I'll announce it tomorrow." "Thank you, Mrs. Cheerilee!" I said with a grin. The school bell rang, announcing the end of the day. And I ran outside to meet up with my mother. "How was your day sweetie?" Mother asked as out out of the schoolyard. "Amazing! And guess what? The show is going to happen!" I exclaimed. "That's nice honey," Mother said blandly. I saw Platinum and told her I'd be right back, and ran over. His mom was talking to a orange pegasus mare with a purple mane, and grey pegasus stallion with a two tone grey mane. When I ran over I also spotted Hurricane. 'Must be his parents.' I thought. "Oh, hey, wassup Shining!" Hurricane greeted. "The show is on, we just have to make sure Copper the 'special part'." I grinned. "Yes! This is going to rock!" Platinum exclaimed. "What's going to rock?" the grey stallion asked. "We're putting on a play!" Hurricane beamed. "Good for you, kid." the orange mare said, ruffling his mane. "Mom!" Hurricane grumbled. "Shining! Let's go!" Mother called. I said 'good bye' and ran back over to my mother, and I saw her cast a hateful glance at Diamond Tiara. I couldn't wait to expose Copper Shell! This plan had to work. If it didn't... then I don't know what we would do for justice. Even if the plan doesn't work, it will still be a fun show. > Casting Chaos > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- The next week we had auditions. I auditioned for Love Berry, the mane mare in this love story; and Platinum tried out for Golden Thunder, the mane stallion. Copper Shell also auditioned for Love Berry, but I hoped she would get Night Shade, the villain. We would have seven weeks to put the show together. This meant we would have practice three days a week and have another day for working on sets. I was one of the first to audition, with Honeycomb being last. The judges and directors of the show were Mrs. Cheerilee, Rarity, and Coco Pommel. While they discussed the roles, multiple foals had their hooves crossed. After a few minutes, everyone was called to the stage. "We have made our decision, and the roles have been posted outside. If you have a problem with your part, please come to one of us and we will work it out. Have a wonderful day, everypony!" Mrs. Cheerilee said. Everypony rushed outside and crowded around the results. I heard a few sighs of disappointment, but I also heard the CMC 2.0 give shouts of excitement. 'Guess they got the three zombies that chase the villains away.' I smiled to myself. Once I got close enough to see the results I saw that everything worked out according to plan. Copper Shell got Night Shade, Platinum got Golden Thunder, and I got Love Berry; I turned around and hugged Platinum. "I bet I know what parts we got," he said with a laugh. "I'm so excited!" I exclaimed. Then I heard a snicker. "Look at the two stars. I bet you two will enjoy the kissing scene," Copper Shell smirked. Platinum's cheeks turned bright red and his eyes went wide. He turned to me, "There's a k-kissing scene?!" he said bewildered. "I didn't know!" I exclaimed in return, with equal bewilderment. "Wow, the pony who picked out the production didn't know there was a kissing scene. I guess I was right, you're blind." Purity snickered as she walked over. "Hey! Take that back!" Platinum shouted. The bullies burst out laughing. "What are you going to do about it? Make some amazing machine that can kill me?" Copper Shell smirked. "Let's go, Platinum, they're not worth it." I said. "Run along little puppy, go to your owner!" Purity called as Platinum hesitated. Just then, Jazzy walked past and knocked Copper Shell over. "Oops, mah bad," she said, then gave us a wink. I tried to stifle my laugh. "Don't y'all worry non, there's no kissin' scene," Jazzy Apple whispered. "Unless ya want there to be," That caused both Platinum and I to both go red in the face. That night I dreamed of the show and Hearts and Hooves Day. > Picnics and Roses > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- I was on my way home with Mom when she mentioned Hearts and Hooves Day. "Isn't that tomorrow?" I asked. "Yes, why?" Mom replied. I blushed a little bit. "No reason. Can I go get some ice cream?" I asked, since that was my go to excuse to get away from my parents. "Ok, but only a small. Got it?" Mom said, handing me five bits. I nodded and ran off in that direction. Once I made sure my mom wasn't following, I turned and headed to the flower shop. When I turned the corner and saw the store, I saw just how busy it was. Ponies were bustling in and out looking for the perfect flower. I squeezed through the crowd and started looking for the right one. What seemed like for hours, I finally found it! It was a light pink rose sitting in a small space in the corner. Then I found my way out and started walking home. 'How am I supposed to get into my house without my parents noticing?' I wondered. I peeked my head through the door. Dad was on the couch, and Mom was nowhere to be seen. Once I was sure Dad was looking away, I slipped inside and started towards the stairs. "How was the ice cream, Platinum?" Dad asked. I turned to look at him, and he turned to look at me, and saw the flower. "Uh..." I stuttered. "I won't ask, though I'm guessing this is for Shining Feather," he smiled. Since I couldn't hide my blushing face, I ran upstairs and slipped the rose into a cup of water sitting on my desk. Then hid the rose behind the curtains of my windowsill. I flopped onto my bed, all that was left to do was to plan out the Saturday that was Hearts and Hooves Day. I fell asleep creating a plan in my head. The next day I woke up and felt a flare of excitement! 'Today was Hearts and Hooves Day!' I grinned in my head. I jumped out of bed and ran downstairs. "What are you so excited about?' Mom asked. "Nothing," I replied with a grin. Mom flipped a waffle onto my plate and I dug in. When I was finished I went back upstairs and tried on one of Dad's bow ties. It was pink and I couldn't get it to fit quite right, so I grabbed another one. Finally after the six bow tie I found one that fit, a plain old black. "We are leaving to have lunch, do want to get something with your friends?" Mom called from downstairs. "Yeah! Leave it on the counter, please!" I yelled in response. I waited upstairs for the door to be opened and shut, then I grabbed the rose and went downstairs. Mom had left twenty bits on the counter. I slipped them into a basket, along with tow sandwiches, a water and lemonade, and a blanket. Then I walked out of the house, making sure to lock the door, and walked to the spot. Once there I set up and made my way to Shining's. I knocked on the door and Silver Spoon answered. "Yes?" She asked looking down on me. "Is Shining Feather home? I was going to get some ice cream, and wondered if she could come along," I replied. "Ok, but only ice cream," Silver Spoon said before calling Shining down. My eyes went wide when I saw her; she had a short red dress on, and a matching bow in her mane. I caught the stern look her mom was giving me so I looked down at my hooves. "Your friend has invited you for ice cream," Silver Spoon said once Shining reached the doorway. "Hi, Platinum! Yes, Mother, I'll be home soon." Shining said. We walked away and I felt Silver Spoon's laser like glare burning holes into the back of my head. Once I heard the door shut I turned and walked the other direction. Once Shining caught back up to me she asked what we were doing. "You'll see," I replied with a small smile. After a few minutes, I told her to close her eyes. "Why? What if I run into something?" She questioned. "I'll make sure you don't run into anything," I said taking her hoof. We walked to the spot and I said, "Okay, you can open your eyes now." Shining opened her eyes and gasped, and her cheeks turned red. We were in a small grove. I had set up a picnic in the center. We sat on the blanket and I pulled out the rose from the basket. When I held it out to her, her cheeks became even redder. I could only imagine what was going on in her head. We ate our food and we started talking about our younger selves. "You tired to jump down the stairs?!" Shining laughed. "I was trying to fly!" I laughed. "Luckily my dad was there to save me," Then Shining gave me a cheeky grin. "This is cute in all, but you promised me ice cream," she smirked. "Then let's go!" I replied as I stood up. I packed up the basket and dropped it off at my house on the way. When we got there, our eyes immediately went to the sign . It said 'The Lover Sundae Chocolate Delight! 10 bits only!'. We walked up and ordered that; we both love chocolate so it worked out great! Shining took the cherry, and we dug in. Our spoon kept hitting each others so we took turns getting a bite. We laughed and talked until we finished. I walked Shining home, and when I went to bed that night, I only had one thought: BEST DAY EVER!!! > Lights, Camera, Action! > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- I was backstage in the mares dressing room with Rarity. She was trying to get my dress perfect, and it was taking forever. While she did that, a peach colored unicorn with a golden mane walked in. She looked familiar, but I couldn’t figure it out. “I’m supposed to do make-up for ‘Love Berry’. Is this the right room?” She asked. Her voice was soft and smooth; it reminded me of the chimes we used to have on our porch. “Why yes, it is, I just have to fix this dress, so you can get set up,” Rarity replied before I could speak. She pulled on the red fabric and took it up at the shoulders. Then she walked out and I sat down at the chair. The unicorn was wearing a white dress that sparkled in the light. I must have seen her at a dinner party. The party! She was the one talking to Pineapple Crush. She did my makeup silently, then walked out of the room. Huh, I guess she might be a bit shy. I walked out to meet Platinum. He was wearing a gray shirt with blue jeans. I saw him blush when he saw me. I smiled back and walked over. “You ready for this?” Platinum asked. “Not really,” I replied, “I’ve never been in a play.” “Same, but I’m super excited!” Platinum exclaimed. “Ok everypony, we are on in Five,” Mrs. Cheerilee said. I smiled nervously and walked over to where I should be. Copper Shell was near me, and she gave me a fake smile. I sat down so that I could see the crowd. Mother and Papa were seated in the front row on the right side. I looked and saw Polished Pebble, Pineapple Crush and the peach unicorn, Diamond Tiara and Pipsqueak, and the original CMC. I smiled and watched as Mrs. Cheerilee walked out on stage. "Mares and gentle-stallions! I am pleased to announce the play 'A Tale of an Inventor' begins now!" Cheerilee exclaimed. The crowd cheered with delight as the curtains opened. The play went on smoothly, now all we had to do was wait for Copper Shell to slip up. The show was halfway through and Copper Shell was going on soon. I walked off the stage and when I walked past I noticed her mike was on. I sat down, knowing I didn’t go on for a couple minutes. Platinum was about to walk off stage, and Copper Shell made her mistake. “This is gonna be just like when I actually did it,” Copper Shell had said, but every pony heard it. The crowd probably thought it was just part of the show, but I saw a confused look on all the actors faces. I just had to hope that Mrs. Cheerilee heard. Copper Shell noticed her mistake as soon as she said it, but didn’t have time to fix it because she had to head on stage. I smiled in the darkness of the stage. This was fun and full of revenge. We were toward the end of the show, and Platinum was confronting Copper about breaking his fake invention. “How dare you break it, It was amazing!” he fumed. “All the more reason to destroy it!” Copper laughed back. “Fine then, ZOMBIES ATTACK!” Platinum yelled. Jazzy Apple, Controller Note, and Hurricane walked out. "Niiiiiiight Shaaaaaade!!!" they groaned. "Gah!" Copper screamed. They  “chased” Copper off stage, and the crowd laughed like mad. Once the crowd died down, I walked out to give my lines. "Oh, Golden Thunder! You did it! Night Shade is-" I said as I tripped over my dress. I stumbled and before I realized what was kissing Platinum Streak, on the lips. Then Platinum started kissing me back and acted like it was part of the show, so I did the same. "Gone," he finished, as he smiled cheekily. I looked into the cheering crowd and saw Mother glaring at Platinum, and Diamond Tiara giving me a matching glare. I ignored them and bowed, as did Platinum. Then we walked off so that we could do final bows. The extras, then “our parents”, the CMC zombies, Copper Shell, then finally Platinum and I. We all did one bow together and then the curtains closed. The cast started talking to one another and the lights came on. I walked back to the girls dressing room, getting a lot of stares from the other ponies. I noticed Copper Shell with Mrs. Cheerilee, and I smiled. I went over to my area in the dressing room and started changing. Some other fillies came in and asked me about the kiss, and it was very annoying. They saw me trip, but thought I did it on purpose. I walked out of the room and ran into Controller Note. “You did great Shining, that was so much fun!” she exclaimed. “Thanks, you did great too,” I responded. “I heard Copper Shell, and heard that she got four days of detention and they are going to find her parents.” Controller told me. “She deserves it,” Platinum responded from behind me. I turned around and said, “You scared me!” “It was hilarious, also should we talk about what happened out there,” he asked. “Nope, let’s just go find our parents and hope we don’t get in trouble.” I responded. Controller ran off to go find Jazzy, and Platinum and I walked out into the crowd. A lot of parents smiled and congratulated us on our performance. The foals in the crowd ogled at us. We walked over to the side and waited. Our mothers showed up at the same time. “You are in so much trouble!” they fumed. “It was an accident!” Platinum exclaimed. “Mhmm, sure,” His mom said. “You’re grounded from play-dates for two weeks Shining Feather,” Mother commanded. “Same for you mister,” Diamond Tiara told Platinum. “But-” Platinum started. "No 'buts' Platinum Streak," Diamond Tiara ordered. The two mares turned and looked at each other. “Diamond, you should teach your son some manners,” Mother said. “Your daughter started it!” Diamond seethed, “so teach her not to kiss in front of a crowd!” “Your son let her! And she clearly tripped, he should have caught her without kissing her!” Mother replied, almost yelling. Ponies around us started watching, and I had never felt more embarrassed. Then Papa and Pipsqueak came over. Papa walked in front of Mother and spoke quietly to her, while Pip glared at the crowd until they started walking again. Then Pip walked over to Diamond Tiara and talked to her. “Come on Shining Feather,” Papa said. I said bye to Platinum, then followed my parents. I realized that I needed to figure out what made them so angry at each other if I was going to be friends with Platinum. When we got home, I was sent upstairs before I could ask about it though. I walked out onto my balcony and opened my wings. I flew up a little bit, but a strong gust of wind knocked me back down. With a sigh, I walked back inside and changed into my pajamas. I would have to wait until Monday to figure out what happened to Platinum and ask him to try to find out what happened. Before going to bed, I walked over to the pink rose. It was sitting on my dresser in a small vase. That was when I realized that I actually enjoyed the kiss, a little. I smiled a bit, turned off the light, and laid down on my bed. It took me a while to fall asleep, but when I did, I dreamed of that night. > Two Weeks > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Like Shining, I was grounded for two weeks. There was no inventing, no friends coming over, and only my parents to hang out with. I could still watch TV or play outside, but TV gets boring and it's not fun to be alone. At school, I talked with Shining even though I wasn’t supposed to, and she told me to ask what happened. Outside of school, I spent a lot of time with Dad; we would go fly kites, ride bikes, and we even went swimming. Those two weeks, I had the most fun with my parents that I had ever had. While we were going to get food for dinner, I asked him about Mom and Silver Spoon. “Why is Mom so angry at Shining’s mom?” I asked. “You should ask her yourself,” He replied “She never tells me, and I want to be friends with Shining, but they are getting in the way,” I said. “Just friends?” Dad asked, giving me a cheeky grin. I blushed and responded, “Yes! Now will you tell me?” “You wont understand,” He responded. “Why wouldn’t I?” I asked. “It’s about love and grown up stuff,” He replied. “I bet I would understand. Please tell me,” I begged. “Ok, but don’t tell your Mom,” he gave in. He told me about Polished Pebble, the CMC, and everything else. We were almost home by the time he finished. “Now I need to talk to Shining. Why does it have to be Friday?!” I moaned. “And I thought foals loved Fridays,” He laughed. “I normally do, but I can’t talk to Shining until Monday.” I responded. We walked inside and set the food down on the table. “Took you two long enough,” mom said sarcastically. “Don’t blame us, the line was long,” I said with a laugh. We sat down to eat our food. I found out a lot of information; I just had to remember until I could talk to Shining and we could come up with a way to get them to make up. > A Plan is Made > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- I was thinking about sneaking out to meet Shining. How I wouldn’t be noticed, I had no idea. While I was working on my plan, Dad walked into my room. “Hey kiddo, you wanna go bowling? Just me and you today. Your Mom is going to the school meeting today,” he said. This would be the perfect time. Once he was distracted I could sneak out and meet up with Shining. “Sure,” I replied. We walked downstairs and dad grabbed some bits, and I grabbed us two water bottles. Then we walked out of the house and started toward the bowling alley. Neither Dad nor I started a conversation, so it was a quiet walk. The spring breeze felt nice because it was a warm day. Dad started acting strange as we got closer. He glanced at me more often and had a weird grin. It was like he was trying to hide his smile but failed. We walked inside the bowling alley and went to go get our balls. There was some music playing, lots of foals with parents, and a few empty lanes. Act normal. Like you are just playing the game. Then you can get out, maybe get him into a competitive mood? I started playing and wasn't doing to great. It was pretty fun though. Our family hadn’t been bowling in a while, so I wasn’t used to the game.     “Hey, I’m going to use the bathroom,” I said, walking toward the door. He just nodded and went back to playing. I ran to the door, and ran straight into someone. “I’m sorry!” I exclaimed as I stood up. “It’s alri- Platinum? Why are you here?” asked the voice, causing me to look up. Shining Feather was standing in front of me, looking confused. She with her dad, who gave me a friendly smile. “My dad wanted me to come with him… I guess you dad had the same idea,” I replied. “Yeah,” Shining said. We walked over to the alley my dad was at, and the two dad’s said hi. “Do you think this was planned?” I asked as the two dads talked and gave us weird looks. “Probably, my father normally doesn’t like bowling,” She replied. “It's really helpful of them, I was trying to sneak out to find you! My dad told me why our moms are so mad at each other!” I exclaimed quietly. “Really? That’s amazing.” she replied.      Then I proceeded to tell her what Dad had told me. We played while I told her, and in the end I won. I got five strikes and seven spares. Shining only got three strikes and eight spares. As we walked out Shining thought of a plan. She whispered it into my ear, and I nodded. We then went our separate ways. Shining was really good at coming up with plans. All I had to do was wait for her que. > Friendship Foals > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- It was the last week of being grounded, and Mother and I were walking home from school. Out of the corner of my eye I could Jazzy, Controller, and Hurricane with their parents. They were following us, but they didn’t make it obvious. Mother and I soon reached the street that led to our house, but I kept walking forward. “Shining, come on,” Mother called. “No,” I replied. That one word made Mother stare at me in shock, then she grew angry. “What did you say to me, young lady?! Let’s go, now!” Mother said in a warning tone. I shook my head and ran down the road toward Platinum’s house. Mother, of course, followed me. The rest of the CMC 2.0 followed, and their mothers chased them. Platinum was waiting outside for us, and I dashed through the front door and into their storage room. It would be perfect for the plan. I sat there and heard Mother shout at Platinum. Then I heard Platinum’s mom shout at her. Platinum then came through the doorway, with the rest of the CMC 2.0 close behind. The moms shouted at each other and we sat in that room and waited for them to come. Scootaloo was the first to find us, and called to the other mothers. ‘They are starting to get along! I really hope this will work.’ When our mothers called to us, we refused to move. They all came into the room, and started to drag us out, but we slipped out of their grasp and ran out the door. They started to follow, but Papa and the other dads were waiting outside. Before the mothers could leave the room, they locked the door. Time to wait for them to work everything out. At first they pounded at the door and yelled at their spouse or foal to let them out, of course, we refused. Then they fell silent. There was no noise in the room, so I unlocked the door and walked into the room. “We will only let you out once you become friends again,” I said as the mothers looked at me. “Again?” Apple Bloom asked. “Our fathers told us how you were friends, but then some guy named Polished Pebble ruined it because love and-” I started. “You should not know this stuff Shining Feather, now move aside,” Mother commanded. “Ok then, we will bring you food later if we need to,” I said before leaving and locking the door. It felt weird being in charge my parents. We sat around outside the door, waiting for the mothers to solve their problems. Platinum was doing homework, I was reading a book called “Creatures of Equestria”, Jazzy and Hurricane were brainstorming ideas, while Controller was writing on a piece of paper. The dads were huddled near the door, listening to their wives and having a quiet conversation. How long is this gonna take. Hopefully not long. We had been sitting outside there for about two hours, when the muffled voices disappeared. Platinum had gone downstairs to get the pizzas we had ordered, and walked up to see us all gathered near the door being as quiet as possible. Then we heard a muffled voice say, “I guess it’s not really your guy’s fault. It’s Polished Pebble that started this”. “I can’t believe we let that stupid stallion affect us and our kids,” replied another voice. “Do you think they have been listening to us?” someone said. “Knowing them, definitely,” one of them replied, and the mares all laughed. Then we heard a knock on the door and we all jumped back. “May we come out now, darlings?” Mother’s voice asked. “Sure Mother, you solved your problems. Now we can all be friends without having to worry about you guys,” I said, opening the door. The mares laughed, and walked out. Then Platinum walked upstairs, and asked, “Did I miss something?” and the parents laughed at his confused expression. Controller's mom floated the pizzas back downstairs, and I filled Platinum on what happened. He looked extremely happy as we all walked downstairs and sat at their small table. It was a bit too small though, so the parents sat at the table, while we all sat on the couch. “I’m glad that they made up with each other,” Platinum whispered. “What are you two whispering about?” Platinum’s mom teased. This caused us to blush, and the others laughed. The whole house was filled with happiness and laughter until we left. “See ya Shining,” Platinum said to me while Mother and Diamond Tiara said goodbye. I nodded and said, “This was great,I can’t believe we got them to make up. We’re like the foals of friendship or something, and now we don’t have to worry about getting in trouble for hanging out!” “Oh by the way Platinum, you are grounded from your workshop for another week,” Diamond Tiara said, looking at him. “You too, Shining Feather, but from dessert,” Mother said to me. “Not another week!” Platinum and I moaned before going our separate ways. > Almost There > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- After being grounded from inventing for a week, I spent hours in my workshop, trying to get it done. The school was having multiple contests, one of them being the science fair. I was sure that if the “Super Flyer” was working… that I would win for sure. The wings had been made, and all I had to do was connect the control panel. Once I did that, I could test it. A surge of excitement ran through my body. Shining was sitting on a stool, writing in a notebook. Jazzy, Controller, and Hurricane were preparing for an upcoming singing contest. I hadn’t heard their song yet, but I was sure it would be great! It was around 5:00 when I had to stop. Mom had called me and Shining in for dinner, and then Shining would have to go home. The smell of pasta filled my nostrils as we walked into the kitchen. There was spaghetti, sauce, and shredded cheese sitting on the counter. Shining licked her lips and began to put some food on her plate. I followed suit and grabbed some food. We sat at the new table, and dug into the spaghetti. Mom and Dad were on the couch, eating and watching a comedy. “How close are you to finishing the Super Flyer?” Shining asked between bites. “Pretty close! It should be done by next week!” I exclaimed. Shining smiled and said, “Well I am going to enter a contest too!” “Which contest?” I asked. “You’ll see. I can’t tell you because it’s a surprise!” She responded with a smile. I laughed and finished off my dinner. Shining had finished too, so I grabbed our plates and set them in the sink. While Shining grabbed her backpack, I walked over to mom, who was still sitting watching TV. “I’m going to walk Shining home,” I informed. “Ok, walk straight back once she gets home,” Mom said sternly. “Got it!” I said before trotting over to Shining, who was opening the door. We walked out into the darkening street, and I tried to explain how the Super Flyer works for the millionth time. Shining still didn’t understand, but it gave us something to talk about. School was over in a few weeks, and there wasn’t much to talk about anymore. The ten minute walk to her house seemed to be over in an instant, and we said goodbye on her doorstep. “See ya tomorrow,” I said. “Bye Platinum,” She replied before opening the door and walking inside. I turned and began to walk home as the wind picked up. There were some pegasi in the sky, moving clouds to get ready for the evening storm. Slowing down, I watched the pegasi pack the clouds together. There were two fillies trying to help out, but they were doing more playing than actually helping. I watched them enviously, but then realized I had stopped walking. Seeing that the pegasi were nearly done, I started to trot, then jog. I made it home before the storm started, and went to the workshop to clean up a bit. When I walked in, I noticed Shining’s pink and yellow notebook sitting on the stool. It was very tempting to read it, but I managed not to open it as I took it over to my backpack and slipped it inside. Walking back into the workshop, I began to clean it up. The Super Flyer looked horrible, so I started thinking of different ways to make it look better. Maybe I should add stickers… no, that would be weird. What if I just painted it? That would look cool! Maybe I could paint it bright blue! With the image of a beautiful flying machine in my head, I walked out and told my mom I needed paint. “I’ll take you tomorrow. It’s too late to head out tonight,” Mom said. “Ok Mom. I’m going to shower then,” I informed her before walking upstairs. As I went to sleep that night, I looked over at my wonderbolts poster. Soon, I’ll be on that poster, and maybe have some of my own. I slept with dreams of paparazzi surrounding me and flying next to Rainbow Dash. > Night of Stars > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Platinum and I were walking in front of our mothers and talking. We were heading to the school for the first competition. The other CMC 2.0 members were in the competition, so we wanted good seats. As we got closer to the school, we saw a long line of ponies waiting to get in. “Ugh, this is gonna take awhile,” Platinum groaned. “Yeah, I guess we weren’t the only ones that wanted good seats,” I said with a sigh. We took our spots at the back of the line and slowly moved closer to the front. “Oh, uh hey, ladies,” a voice said from behind us. I turned around to see the grey earth pony and Copper Shell. Our parents had turned around too, but when they saw the stallion they turned back around to face forward. “Come on ladies, I don’t know why you’re mad at me. If anything I should be mad at you,” He huffed. I saw Copper Shell smirk as mother tensed up angrily Platinum’s mother turned and replied, “You have no reason to be upset! You were the one who ran away from your problems, not tried to solve them or be honest with us!” Platinum then turned around and turned his mother towards him. “Dad look, she needs her son to calm her down. She can’t even control herself,” Copper Shell quipped. “Enough Copper. Let’s go wait for your mom,” Polished Pebble ordered, and the two stepped out of line and walked away. We all turned around and saw a huge gap between us and two identical red maned stallions. I turned my head to look at our mothers as we walked forward to fill the gap. Then I ran into one of red-maned stallions. “I’m so sorry!” I exclaimed. “It’s fine mate, right Gallop?” One asked the other after they turned around. “That’s correct Farrier. We don’t mind, after all, you seemed quite distracted by that fight,” The other replied, more to me. “And our sister Whinny does it too,” Farrier said. I noticed they had an accent, so they must not be from Ponyville. The two stallions turned and walked forward. Our group was almost to the front of the line. After a couple minutes we reached the front, and Mother paid for us to get in. The large black stage curtain was closed and a microphone sat on a stand in the middle of the stage. We took our seats in the second row, and waited for the show to start. Mrs. Cheerilee walked out onto the stage and over to the microphone. “Hello fillies and gentlecolts, and welcome to the annual singing competition! We have so many foals performing tonight, so let’s get going!” she announced. The crowd clapped as she walked off stage and the spotlight turned off. The curtain pulled open  and three colts were on stage. One was behind some drums, another was playing guitar, and the third was on base. They broke out into a rock song, and no one could hear what they were singing. After the song ended, my ears were ringing. “That was so loud!” Platinum exclaimed. I nodded my head in agreement as the next group came out. I hoped that the CMC 2.0 would come on soon. The contest went on and soon there were only two groups left, the CMC and a group of four fillies and a colt. The 5 foals came out, they had a country song about playing in a meadow. Finally, the CMC came out. Controller was to the left, sitting behind a keyboard, and Hurricane and Jazzy were near the middle with their mics. “Your never gonna bring us down, never gonna break this part of us, we’re gonna sing it out, cuz we are friends who work together yeah!” they all sang together. The tune was very catchy, but they stopped singing and Controller began a music solo. It switched from the first tune to a different one. Then they began a remake of their parents theme song, and Jazzy was the lead. Platinum looked shocked when he heard her sing. We had never heard her sing, and she was really good at it! They finished that and the music once again changed, but faster this time. “Woah, oh! We got the music in us! Woah-” they cut off into screams as a set of lights fell right next to Hurricane. The crowd was in silent panic, and I was horrified on the inside. The other lights, smoke machines, and finally, the roof began to fall. The crowd erupted into screams of terror as the dust and began to settle, and the CMC were nowhere to be found. Platinum and I looked at eachother, and his eyes were full of tears. Then, somewhere in the rubble, a faint beat. It was just barely there, yet, the crowd began to quiet down, and it kept growing louder. The rubble blew off the stage in a burst of magic! Controller Note had protected the other CMC with a magic bubble, and they had brushed off what happened a bit too quickly… but they continued with a song. “Gonna break out!” Jazzy sang, with the others echoing “out!”, and they all sang “Set ourselves free, yeah!” “Let it all go!” was the next line, the same way as the first line. “Just let it be yeah, find the magic in our hearts, let the magic start to set ourselves apart!” they all sang as an ending, before shouting “CUTIE MARKS!” The crowd went wild as the ponies bowed. I cheered as loud as I could, and my family and Platinum’s joined in! They left the stage, or what was left of it, and Mrs.Cheerilee came on. “That was a very dramatic and… unplanned ending to this competition, but it is time to announce the winners! In third place we have The Colts of Fire with their song, Rockin’ on a Roll!” The crowd cheered as the three colts from the first song came out and got their medals. The walked to the back of the stage as Mrs. Cheerilee started talking again. “In second place we have the Flower Fillies with their song Dancing like a Dandelion!” Four fillies with flower headbands on walked onto the stage and got silver medals. “And in first place…. The Cutie Mark Crusaders 2.0 with their song mashup!” The crowd went wild as the CMC walked out and got their gold medals! It was a great ending to a terrifying time! > CMC Celebration > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- I was at Sugar Cube Corner with Pinkie and Platinum, setting up the party balloons. Platinum was getting the tables ready, and was sweeping the floor. Pinkie was making a racket in the kitchen, probably making the cupcakes. The party was just about ready, so I grabbed my notebook and continued writing. Platinum put the broom back in the closet, walked over, and tried to peer over my shoulder at the book. “I can’t believe that they got their Cutie Marks at the show! They are so lucky!” Platinum exclaimed. “Yeah, but they deserve them, and they discovered what they are good at,” I replied, though I was a bit jealous too. “True, but I can’t wait to get mine now! This takes forever” Platinum groaned. Pinkie walked out and laughed, “It just takes some time! And then you can have an amazing PINKIE PARTY!” We both laughed as she jumped around with the cupcakes, then set them on the buffet table. We continued to get the party ready for about another hour, and we finished a few minutes before the party was supposed to start. The first people through the door were the Cmc party ponies. Controller had a baby pink dress on that matched her pink and brown mane, and Jazzy had a Purple dress that was the same shade as her favorite purple bow. Hurricane had a black bowtie, so the stripes of purple in his hair were the only color. “Hey guys!” Jazzy said, “This party is gonna be amazin’!” “Thanks, and you three look amazing!” I replied. Hurricane walked over and smelled the cupcakes, and sighed in joy. We all laughed at his happy expression, and other ponies started to come on in. The party started going full swing, and the CMC were crowded with people, so we didn’t get a lot of time to talk with them. Platinum and I were so happy that they got their Cutie Marks, but we were also upset since they probably wouldn’t hang out with us as much. Towards the end of the party, the CMC turned off the music, and walked towards a mic. The crowd quieted down, and the CMC finished the night by singing the song that got them their cutie marks. Hurricanes Gray swirl cutie mark faintly glowed, and so did Jazzy’s cutie mark: a microphone tied to an apple. I guess apple do always have something apple related. When Controller Note began her music solo, her Treble clef and joystick cutie mark seemed to sparkle. The crowd was in awe, and once the song ended, they once again cheered. “Everyone! Follow your dreams, and you can go anywhere!” Controller Note exclaimed, and that ended off the night. We waited until after the guests left, and walked over to the CMC. “That was the best party! Ain’t nothin’ gunna beat that one!” Jazzy crowed. “That was pretty epic” Hurricane agreed. Platinum nodded in agreement. “Well, I guess Platinum and I aren’t CMC anymore… I’ll bring my cape by the clubhouse tommorow,” I said glumly. “What are you talkin’ about? You’re crazier than a rattlesnake doin’ a tap dance,” Jazzy queried. “We don’t have our cutie marks, and you guys do, so I thought that meant that we wouldn’t be CMC anymore,” I explained with a sigh. Controller Note looked perplexed, and Hurricane said, “You guys are still CMC, you’ll get your cutie marks, and we can hep you!” “Really?” Platinum asked. “Of course, we wouldn’t leave ya for apple pie!” Jazzy exclaimed. Platinum looked at each other, and smiled. Then all five of us walked out of Sugar Cube corner, feeling like the best friends in all of Equestria. > Pranks and Prizes > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- The sky was a disgustingly normal blue, with no clouds in the sky. I was walking through Ponyville, when I saw a gray filly writing in a journal, and looking so very nervous. Her hair was had a beautiful design: Chaos. I really wanted to know what her silly little journey was about, since I had some freetime. I saw her slip the book into her saddlebag, and with a single snap, it was resting in my paw. I wanted someone to share it with so, obviously, I teleported to Fluttershy! She would probably love to know what the fillies were writing about now. Our house was the same as always, a small cottage with animals inside and out. When me moved out of the castle and into the cottage again, I spiced the place up a little. Fluttershy was in the kitchen, and she gave me a small wave as I walked in, “Hello, Honey”. “Guess whaaat IIIIII found!” I sang, “also where’s Screwy and Zany?”. “Screwball went to the park with Dinky, and Zany is in his room with his friends,” she responded as a loud noise sounded from upstairs. Fluttershy winced, and I wondered if I should go see what chaos Zany caused. “Anyways, what did you find?” Fluttershy asked. I smiled and teleported us to the couch, which was currently floating. “It’s this journal that some random filly wrote! She seemed very protective of it, so I wondered if it was like Screwy’s diary,” I informed her. “You read Screwy’s diary!” Fluttershy challenged, but I just opened the journal and started reading. I only got through the first page or so before she grabbed the journal and slammed it shut. “Give this back to that filly right now Discord, or you’re sleeping on the couch tonight,” Fluttershy threatened. I held my hands up in defeat and snapped the journal out of sight. “Problem solved. Now… I’m going to see what chaos Zany caused!” I concluded before quickly teleporting away. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I rushed around my house, searching for the journal. “Did you check your room?” Mother asked, and I ran upstairs to check again. After checking all of my hiding spots, I ran back downstairs. “I have 20 minutes to get to the competition, and I can’t find my entry! It was just in my saddlebag! If I don’t find it… it will be so embarrassing!” I fretted. I tore pillows and cushions off the couch, and blankets got scattered around the room. “Just check your bag once again, and if it’s not there, we’ll tell the judges you can’t find it,” Mother said, ending the frantic search. I glumly walked over to the bag, and opened it, even though I knew it wasn’t… “How did it get here? I checked here like… twenty million times!” I spluttered as I pulled the journal out of the bag. “It doesn’t matter, we have 15 minutes to get to the contest!” Mother stated as she opened the door. We ran as fast as we could, making it to the contest with only three minutes before it started. I handed my journal to the judges, then ran to go practice my speech that I wrote.  The first foal went on, then the next. Soon it was my turn, and I walked out to see Platinum in the front row next to our parents. “My book entry is the story of a young colt trying to accomplish what everyone thought was impossible. He is a normal earth pony working to find a way to fly. His journey to flight is full of failures and problems that he must solve. This book has a mystery ending, for not even I know if his invention works. Platinum’s Test Flight, is based off a real event, which has not ended at this time,” I concluded my speech, and Platinum’s mouth hung wide open with surprise. The crowd clapped as I walked off stage, and the final foal walked on. My heart was going to beat out of my chest. What if he didn’t like it, or thought I should have asked him… hopefully he liked it. The last speech lasted about five minutes, and sounded amazing. My story was decent, but I definitely got points off for it not being a finished story. One by one, the judges called each contestant back on stage. “Shining Feather with her book, Platinum’s Test Flight!” she called. I walked out and the crowd cheered and clapped. The only voice I could hear though, was Platinum. Even my parents clapping and cheers couldn’t match Platinum’s pure excitement for me. My heart felt warm and fuzzy, like never before. Even as they called the last person and began the speech, I only looked at Platinum. His pink spot around his eye was almost blindingly bright, and his mane was still rough and tangled, yet… he never looked so handsome as he did on that night. I began to see another side of me, one that I never thought I had. I snapped out of my trance as the judge said, “I would like to congratulate all of these talented foals while we count the votes!” and everyone began to cheer. I could see Copper Shell in the crowd, looking straight at me. As we made eye contact, she gave me a fake smile, and mouthed a few words. “Worst. Book. Ever.” she mouthed before looking away. My smile sunk, and I glanced to see Platinum looking concerned, but I ignored it. Copper’s words shouldn’t bother me, but I felt they always would; she would be the little Devil in my brain, bringing me down into the void of despair. “The votes have been counted, and in third place we have, Glow Berry!” the crowd cheered as she stepped forward and got a medal. “In second we have Thunder Strike!” More cheering, and my hopes were rising. “In first place by only one vote, Shining Feather!” I stood in shock as the crowd cheered and shouted. One of the foals, nudged me, and I walked forward and received my small trophy. It was a shiny gold color with a book on top. “Her book will be published and put in the public library as well as possible copies sold at the local bookstore,” the judge said, and we shook hooves. As I stepped back, A bright light swirled around me, and the crowd gasped as I turned to see a small tattoo-like image on my flank. My face lit up with excitement as I looked closer. It was a writing quill, with a light shining brightly behind it! I was so excited that my special talent was writing, and I could tell that Mother was too. Maybe if my special talent was writing, I would get into my dream school: Gifted Foals Writing Academy. Only the best got in, about Seventy-Five foals a year. I never thought I even had a chance to make it in… but if my special thing is writing then I must be good enough to get in. The other issue was the cost, there was no way Mother and Papa had the bits to pay for the academy. Platinum looked happy for me, yet I could see the sadness under his joy for me. Platinum was the only one of us without his Cutie Mark, but I was confident he would get it when The Super Flyer 5.0 finally flew at his contest. The contest had ended, and my family and friends were making their way towards me. “That story sounds better than fresh Cider from the farm!” Jazzy exclaimed, and Hurricane and Controller Note nodded in agreement. “I’m going to read it from the library as soon as it comes out!” Hurricane said. “You included us right?” Controller asked. “Of course I did! Otherwise it wouldn’t be accurate would it?” I asked in reply. “I’m more excited that Rainbow Dash durin’ cider season!” Jazzy chirped. “Congrats on the Cutie Mark, Shining,” Platinum said as he walked over and gave me a hug. He lingered for a second, before pecking me on the cheek. I felt a light blush burn my cheeks, and the CMC giggled. I saw the sadness in his eyes, and changed the subject. “Are you ok? You’ll get your cutie mark soon, I know it,” I reassured him, and his eyes were a bit brighter. “It just that I’m the only one in the class without a cutie mark, and Copper Shell bet that I would never get one,” he informed. I pulled him into a hug, and the CMC joined in. As we all stepped away, I saw a silent tear mark his face. “Congratulations Shining Feather” Diamond Tiara praised. “I’m very proud of you Honey,” Papa said, giving me a giant hug. He was crying slightly, and I gave him another hug. Mother also came up and gave me a hug that lasted longer than most. “We need to head home, a party will be in order tomorrow!” Mother said with a smile. The CMC waved goodbye as the ran off to find their parents, and we walked to the exit together. Platinum gave me one last hug, and whispered, “Thanks for believing in me, and writing a book after me,” before we split ways. The day had been really long, and I still never figured out how my journal got back into my saddlebag. I would have to figure it out another day. By the time I got back to the house I was drained, so I crawled into bed, and looked over at my trophy. It sat next to my Junior Helper trophy I got for helping my teachers at the academy in Canterlot. I prefered helping my teachers over joining Mother at dinner parties or trying to join the other foals. Most foals didn’t like me because we weren’t as rich as them. I thought to my year here, and compared it with my time in Canterlot. While Canterlot had my favorite ice cream shop, Pony Joe’s, Ponyville had friendly ponies and a nice quaint feel. Happiness bubbled in my chest as I thought about my adventures with my friends, and slipped into sleep. > Cutie Markless > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Don’t think I wasn’t happy for them, I was just feeling bad for myself. Mom would always say that you shouldn’t pity yourself, but I did at that moment. Sure, it was possible that I would get my cutie mark at my competition, but what if I didn’t… I felt so alone when I saw Shining’s cutie mark appear. It made her look more beautiful tha- it made her look more grown up, and here I was, with no cutie mark, looking like a little colt. If I just had my cutie mark! I never thought I would get my cutie mark last in my class. “Platinum! Let’s go, we don’t want to be late!” Mom called from downstairs. At this point, I almost didn’t want to see my friends and their cutie marks; I just wanted to lay around and mope. Mom yelled at me again, so I shuffled downstairs. “Why so glum dude” Dad asked in his “Cool colt” voice, and I smiled and tried not to giggle. I felt slightly better as I thought about all the fun games that would be happening. We walked out the door and over to Shining’s house. Her large manor was glowing with light, and the faint sound of music came through the open windows. Shining Feather opened the door as we walked onto the porch, and she ushered us in. In the living room, Jazzy sat eating a slice of cake, and waved to me. Controller and Hurricane were dancing to the music blaring throughout the house. “How do you like it?” Shining asked over the loud music. My only response was to smile. She laughed as I grabbed her hoof and joined the two foals on the dance floor. We spun around as Jazzy and the parents watched. Locked in a dance that came from our hearts, we continued even when my leg started burning. Only when I tripped on a pillow, thrown by Jazzy, did we stop. “You two were dancing longer than a pig in a mud bath,” Jazzy informed us, though I didn’t understand. We weren’t in mud, but Jazzy never really made sense. The other two foals had stopped, and grabbed food from the large table in the dining room. Silver Spoon smiled at us, and gestured to the other three foals. “Why don’t you five play one of the games together?” she hinted, so we all ran over to the table of food to think of a game. I munched on one of the cookies as idea’s were thrown around. “Hide and Seek! Battles! Pillow Fight!” they all threw out. I had no ideas, and no idea how to get a cutie mark. “What about hide and seek tag?” I finally asked. It was a combination of two classic games, and the only thing I could think of. They all nodded excitedly, and Hurricane volunteered to be it. We ran into the backyard, and I climbed up into the old treehouse in the corner of the yard. Shining said it was there when they bought it, and she fixed it up by adding a slide. I saw Shining fly up into a low branch of a different tree, and Jazzy jumped into a bush. Controller Note was nowhere to be found, and I scanned the yard. The porch had no hiding spots, just a table and a chest with a hose in it. The yard was also mostly empty, there was greenery lining the edges. A tall fence marked the edges of the yard. There was the old treehouse, and the pool as well, which was crystal clear. Everything about her house was clean and pristine except the old treehouse. It became Shining’s territory in her perfect-seeming home. With drawings and paper scattered on the floor, and a bright yellow rug, it seemed like it shouldn’t be there. The gray pegasus hunter had come out and was scanning the yard for us. He spotted me and flew at me. I frogot that he was a good flyer, and a fast one. As he flew towards the doorway, I jumped onto the slide spun around before landing on the lawn. Running as fast as my legs would go, I tried to escape the pegasus. All of my focus went into running, and I felt like my old friends were with me in my yard. A memory long forgotten came into my mind: I was with four friends, all under the age of 7, and we were daring each other to do crazy things. My friend had a trampoline, and I had just been dared to do a flip off of it. That was something I had never done before, and didn’t seem smart, but I wanted to prove I was cool… so I stepped onto the springy surface and jumped a few times. They were all watching as I went to flip off. I had counted to three, and with one last jump- I flew back to the present as I crashed into a bush, with a yellow earth pony and a big purple bow inside. Hurricane had been close behind, so we jumped out of the bush, and he turned to chase Jazzy. My legs burned, and my muzzle ached from where I had landed on my face all those years ago. I had cried, and they stopped talking to me. It was nice to know that everything had turned around from then. No longer did I cry to myself at night, or sit alone at lunch… I would laugh with my friends, and tell crazy stories at lunch. “TAG! You’re it!” Hurricane called as he tapped my on the side. And so the chase began. After the party had ended, Shining and I left our parents to clean. We just walked, listening to the evening noises of ponyville. As we walked, we began to follow a dirt path leading to a small house in a tree; a place where five friends tried to find their special something. I thought we would stop there, but we kept walking, into the orchards, even though we weren’t allowed in. Red and green apples dotted the trees, and a sweet smell was on the breeze. We came to a hill with a small clearing and sat, looking across the farm and into ponyville. Canterlot was a small dot on the horizon, and the setting sun turned the sky pink. I wanted to say something, but no words would come to me. The silence wasn’t like the silence when someone yells and then the room gets quiet; it was more like listening to each other mentally. I watched the sky, and glanced at Shining, who was wearing a small pink flower in her mane. “What’s that?” she asked, breaking the silence. I looked to where her hoof pointed, and It was a small clearing in the midst of the farm, with an odd glow around it. “Let’s find out before we have to head back,” I replied, standing up. She followed suit, and we walked in the direction of the glow. When we got to the source, we found a large tree. It wasn’t just any tree, but a large apple tree twisted around a pear tree. To the left were a few pear trees, but they were alone among the many apples. A rock sat between the roots of the two intertwined trees, and It had a small carving in it. There was a small heart with a B and a P with a small plus inbetween. I had no idea what they meant, or why it was out here, but I felt a strong comfort being in this place with Shining. It was like someone was watching, but not in a creepy way. A strong breeze blew through once, then it was truly silent. No creatures, wind, or any other noise sounded. Shining and I glanced at each other, and I saw her shudder. “We should probably head home…” she hesitated, “Your parents probably want to go home”.  I nodded in agreement and we away from the two trees and a small rustle came from it. Once we reached the hill we sat at, the noises had started up again, and the crickets were chirping. The moon was rising higher in the sky, and It was probably close to ten. Once out of the farm and back in Ponyville, we ran to her manor and came through the door to four panicked and angry parents… > Pegasus Platinum > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- After we got home from the hill, we got grounded from dessert, but that had ended a week ago. Instead, today was my day, where I would hopefully join my friends in having a cutie mark! The Super Flyer needed a small fixing after it began steaming and the wing blew off. There would be no time for testing, even with all five of us there, it would be a close call to get it fixed. If this failed… No; it won’t fail. Shining said I needed to believe in myself more, so I tried whenever I could to be positive. Two hours left to fix it, then the contest would start. They said that there would be an amazing prize, and a secret judge! I hoped the judge would be a wonderbolt, since my invention was to fly. The contest was over inventing though, so it probably wouldn’t. I was sitting behind stage, with Shining helping attach the straps around my chest and stomach. She fluttered her wings, and I wondered, once again, what it must be like to be her. To be born with the ability to fly, or to be a unicorn and have amazing magical powers. Earth Ponies were the boring farmers… and seemed to be the lowest class is many stories. Shining accidently pulled a strap too tight and I let out a small squeak. “Sorry!” she apologized, and went back to getting straps in place. I heard the announcer begin his welcome speech, and the metal clanked together as I stood up. Even though I was the last to go, we all went on stage for a first look. There were five of us total, and their inventions looked much prettier or intricate than mine, but as we all walked out and looked to the audience, many ponies looked at mine. I was the only one wearing an invention, so maybe that was why. “And our judges are Metal Page and Iron Dust. We also have a guest judge, the great and magnificent Princess of friendship. Please welcome, Princess Twilight Sparkle!” the announcer exclaimed, and the crowd burst into cheering as the Royal mare flew down from above and took her seat. The crowd settled down as she pulled a microphone over to her. “I’m so excited to be judging this contest, for I used to love inventing and reading about inventions. These foals are hopefully better than me, since mine never did anything” she began, and the crowd laughed, “Let’s see these inventions!” We all walked back offstage, and I ran over to Shining and began panicking. She sat quietly, and help my hoof, and her calm demeanor melted away the panic and some of the anxiety. I never even heard the first foal finish and the second begin. “What if it doesn’t work? I’ll be so embarrassed, and then the princess will tell Rainbow Dash, and my life will be over!” I fretted. “What did I tell you about doubting yourself, I’m sure you’ll do fine. You worked so hard, It has to work,” Shining reassured, and the third foal went on stage. “But...” I began before she cut me off. “You’ll do great, I know it,” she said. “I don’t think so…” I groaned. She sat thinking for a moment, and the fourth foal began their speech. “Think of it as a school presentation, and if you pass, you get a trophy,” she said, and I looked to her doubtfully. “Then I’m going to fail this and school,” I worried. She looked annoyed for a second, then the same calm face washed over her again. “You won’t win by thinking you’ll fail. Please just do this for me,” she said, and gave me a small kiss of the cheek. “You’re up Platinum Streak,” a pony said. I took a deep breath and walked on stage. The crowd looked at me, and my hooves shook slightly. “So, what is your invention called, what does it do, and how long did it take?” the announcer asked. “This is called the Super Flyer, and it will allow me to fly like a pegasus. It took me about a year, and five different ideas to make,” I explained. “Why did you choose this as your invention?” she questioned. “I’m not really sure, I just always wanted to feel what it was like to be a pegasus,” I stated. “Well, let’s see it then!” the announcer said, and she stepped back. I moved the remote panel in front of me, and pressed the take off button. The wings began spinning, and I felt my hooves begin to lift. Then a cough of smoke came off, and I touched ground again. Mom looked concerned, but I pressed the button again, and nothing happened. It had failed; I had failed. I turned to walk off stage when the gears began grinding together and my feet lifted off the stage. Hovering in the air, the crowd oohed and aahed. I moved it forward, then back, and up before touching back to the ground. Dad cheered, and soon the whole crowd was cheering, clapping, and chanting my name. I left the stage, and Shining gave me a tight hug before helping me pulled it off. We all were called back on stage, and the ponies clap and cheer. “We have chosen our winners, once your name if called, come collect your prize, then you can exit the stage. The top three foals were Rusted Hook, Platinum Streak, and Gear Glow!” The princess announced, and the other two foals walked off stage. “In third place; Rusted Hook with his fruit sortamajiger!” the purple mare called, and the crowd clapped as he collected a ribbon and walked off stage with his machine. “The second place medal goes to… Gear Glow with her Springtastic Cart,” she exclaimed, and the brown unicorn took her trophy, and drove her spring loaded car off the stage. “That means that first place goes to Platinum Streak and his Super Flyer! For your reward, you get a brand new Inventor Extraordinar building kit, along with a meeting with my five friends before school starts!” Twilight informed as she flew over and shook my hoof. Camera’s went off throughout the crowd, and I took my trophy. I felt a sharp zap, and the crowd gasped. This is it! Please say it is! I turned to see a silver blade spinning and creating a streak across my flank. Shining ran out from the wing and jumped to pull me into the best hug of my life. I fell of my back, and “AWWW” sounded through the crowd. We stood up, my hair in my eyes. After brushing it back, Mom and Dad came up and we took photos for the Ponyville Paper. As the crowd cleared out, I walked over to the Princess. “Umm, P-princess Twilight Sparkle, I-I actually have a request for my reward…” I stammered. “Yes?” she asked. “Do you think I… could meet the Wonderbolts instead… I don’t want to offend you or anything! I just really… really want to meet them…” I babbled. The princess smiled and nodded. “I’m sure I could arrange that,” she said before lifting into the air and flying away. I jumped into the air and cheered. My dreams are coming together! Now I can finish school with all my friends, and fly with Shining! The day I would fly with Shining would be the best one. She had left in a hurry, and I figured it was just to get a present or add to her prize winning book. I felt unstoppable. > New Chances > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- I looked at the letter for what must have been the 1,000th time. Ms. Shining Feather     We have seen your request to join the Gifted Foals Writing Academy. After looking over your past academy scores, and your writing achievements, we invite you to finish your school time at our academy. The first day of school is-     I looked away. It was only two days after Platinum got his Cutie mark, and would be leaving tomorrow. Platinum was the only one who didn’t know, and I planned to tell him during our walk tonight. Most likely, I wouldn’t see him until the next summer. Mother and Papa were going to come to Canterlot for Hearth’s Warming, and there were no other days off. A knock sounded from downstairs; Platinum was here. I grabbed a small bag, and joined him on our porch. We began our walk, going through the farm, back to the hill that overlooked the intertwined trees. Crickets provided a noise as we sat leaning into each other, and I couldn’t find a way to break the news.     “This is great, I can’t wait for us to fly together, and finish school together this year,” Platinum said, breaking the silence.     “Plat-” he shushed me before I could finish. He pulled me close to him, and I looked deep into his eyes. His affection for me was clear, and I found myself breathing heavily.  Since the first day he stood up for me, we had been the best of friends. Neither of us had many friends; so we had each other. My heart began beating faster and faster, thumping out of my chest. This was the moment, our lives were coming together. He leaned in, and pulled me into a long kiss. I enjoyed the moment, and when he moved away, sadness came over me. How could I ever tell him now? Platinum would be crushed, and maybe he wouldn’t like me.     “Sorry if you weren’t ready for that… I just felt the moment was right…” Platinum murmured.     “No! You’re fine… I enjoyed it… but I have something to tell you… I-” he interrupted me again     “OKAY! I’m glad you didn’t mind… and I just want you to know that I really like you… a lot.” he confessed, and his cheeks were bright red. I gave him a short kiss on the muzzle, and smiled; he looked like a school foal with a crush on an older girl.     “I like you too! But Platinum, I really need to tell you something!” I said before he could interrupt. “Okay? What is it?” he asked, tilting his head at my strained tone. “I’m sorry to tell you this, but…” I began, but got a knot in my throat, so I just pulled the letter out of a small bag I had brought. I handed it over to him, and he began reading it. His face turned pale, and tears began to collect in his bright blue eyes. “Your… leaving. Your leaving us… me and going back to Canterlot. Why? And why would you not tell me sooner?” he barked, and I jumped back. “I- I didn’t know how to tell you…” I stammered. “Well, you know what? Have fun at your stupid writing school! It’s not like I wanted to finish school with your, or that I actually love you or anything,” he ranted, and I tried to cut in, “No I don’t want you to make us any more excuses! I hope you have a good life, and don’t expect me in it”. “Plat-” I started, but he whipped it head around and stared me down. “Just go away!” he yelled, throwing the letter at me and turning away. I ran, holding back the tears, pain, and anger. It was his choice to get mad at me… he just didn’t understand. Panting, I burst through the door and ran up to my room, surprising Mother and Papa. Now sobbing, I collapsed on my bed, and buried my head under my pillow. There were quiet hoofsteps, then Mother sat down beside me. “GO AWAY!” I sobbed through the pillow, and I felt Mother begin patting my back. “I’m guessing Platinum didn’t take it well?” she sighed, and pulled the pillow off my face. I told her the about what happened, excluding the kissing part… and she shook her head sadly. “He’ll come around before you leave… I’m sure We’ll see him at the train station tomorrow,” she consoled, and I sat up, wiping away the tears. I nodded, and she quietly left me to my thoughts. Yeah, he’ll say goodbye tomorrow. ~~~ Where is he? I was waiting on the platform while my stuff was loaded onto the train. Mother and Papa were sitting on a bench quietly chatting, and the CMC were there with their parents. “Come on! That colt better show up or he is gunna be deader than a possum near a hungry bear,” Jazzy muttered. “Yeah, I’ll hunt him down if he doesn’t show,” Hurricane said. “It’s fine guys, he just is sad… that’s all,” I responded. I’m glad they want to help me… the train whistle blew, and that meant we had to leave. “Bye Shining!” the CMC called, and it almost nothing to warm my heart. I guess he really doesn’t want me in his life anymore… Mother, Papa, and I boarded the train and sat down. As the train started to pull away, I waved to my friends, at least the ones that bothered to show up... > Life Lacking > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- The day of Shining’s departure: Anger. That’s all I felt since she told me. That, and pain; sharp stabbing in my heart, making me all the angrier. How could she just leave when everything was going so well. Mom wanted me to go say goodbye, but I had locked my door and had no intention of opening it anytime soon. I had water, sandwiches, and candy still in my room… all prepared for the big sleepover I was going to have with Shining. There was no thought in my head, except for the fact that she was gone, just like everypony else I became friends with in past years. The colts I hung out with when life was simple, easy; they went to Whinnyapolis. Bright Spark, my friend before Shining, came around, moved to Manehattan after his mom made it big in the movie “Talk Derby to me”, which was about training to be a derby racer apparently; I wasn’t allowed to watch it at the time, and had no interest to. These were only a few of the foals that have left, and I never saw any of them again, so how could I think Shining still wanted to be friends. I hate life sometimes… A week after Shining left: I left my room today. There was too much time to myself to think, and now I feel bad for missing her train… oh well. Mom had been sitting at the table when I came down, and she tried to have a “feelings talk”, but I really didn’t want more feelings right now. Apparently the CMC had come around a few times, and I felt even worse for ignoring the friends that I did still have. As soon as they dropped by again, I would talk to them. It would be too embarrassing to go to them; they probably were angry at me… and I would understand. There was only five weeks of summer left, so I would see them at school if nothing else. Why do I keep making friends… friendship never seems to go right for me so why do I keep trying. Add a week: I decided I couldn’t stand Mom and Dad’s nagging, so I left the house. For a second I thought about getting an ice cream, but I didn’t want to be around others, so I went for a walk. Wandering from place to place, deep in thoughts of regret and anger. Briefly, I debated running away, but then everyone else would be sad or angry, and I wouldn’t get to meet the Wonderbolts. That was two weeks away, and I had almost forgotten about it. Maybe that would cheer me up; flying next to Rainbow Dash, Soarin, and Spitfire. While I was in my brain, I had accidently walked out of town, out to a place I never wanted to be again… the hill. Like shook me out of my haze when I bumped into a tree. “Ow, stupid tree!” I looked around and continued, “Ugh, why did I bring myself here! I’m so dumb, stupid brain, stupid thoughts, stupid, stupid, stupid!” After my tantrum, I sat down with a huff and looked at the same tree Shining and I had kissed after looking at. A sharp slice of sadness cut through me. The tree looked so beautiful with the dying sun behind it, just like Shining. For the hundredth time, I wondered why she left. It’s her life, I should be happy, it’s just hard to imagine a school year without her. How am I going to tell her sorry, I won’t see her for such a long time! I sat in worried thought, watching the stars blink in the sky, until my eyes grew heavy and I drifted off into a dark void of dreams. I wander along a blank white hall. On the sides, pictures of my friends blankly stare at me. As I look at them, they complain about how bad I am as a friend. Their voices bore holes in my brain, and I begin to run in a panic. The hall is endless, and their voices never end. “Please! Go away, leave me alone!” I shout and cry, and the noise stops with a sharp click. Standing before me is a tall dark alicorn, Princess Luna. “Do not fret young one, it is just a dream. I know you’re worried about what others think about you, I once was too,” she tells me, her voice calming yet majestic. “How can I tell Shining I’m sorry?” I ask, hoping she’ll have an answer. “There are many ways, ask those around you for guidance, for I cannot help you as a parent may. I will tell you that all you need is a paper and quill,” Luna says, before dissolving into a mist. I woke up with a shudder, and felt the sun bearing down on my flank. It was fairly early in the morning, and I realized what Princess Luna meant. A letter! With a sliver of hope, I jumped up and ran toward my house, never noticing the green eyes watching me from the tree. ~~~ I knew I would be in trouble for being out all night, but Mom was scarier than the Pony of Shadows! As I came through the door, I saw her, Dad, the CMC and their parents, and a stallion that was dark grey with a black mane; most likely a police stallion. The first one to notice me was Jazzy; everyone else was not far behind. “PLATINUM STREAK!! WHERE WERE YOU YOUNG COLT?! I SHOULD KILL YOU RIGHT NOW FOR GOING MISSING!!!” She charged for me, and I thought I was done for, but she pulled me into a tight hug. Dad came over and said, “Where were you?” “I was out by… the CMC clubhouse,” I lied, not wanting to give away Shining and I’s secret spot. Hurricane look at me, but didn’t say anything. “Well then, no more going out of town after dinner!” Mom decreed, but I knew she was glad I was home. “Can we talk t’ Platinum real quick Ma’am?” Jazzy asked, and she nodded before going to talk to the other adults. I followed the three of them outside, and they all gave me a small hug. “Why did you not go to see Shining before she left? She was really sad,” Controller Note stated with a slight frown. “I don’t really want to talk about it; I have a way to apologize to her. Honestly, I’m just really sorry for ignoring everyone,” I said, looking away to avoid their gaze. “Well, we ain’t mad at ‘cha. I for one am happier than a pig in mud that you’re out an’ about,” Jazzy said in her weird country way. The other CMC looked at Hurricane, who had a puzzled look on his face. “What wrong with ya Hurricane?” Jazzy asked. “It’s just that… I don’t know how Platinum is going to apologize to Shining since she’s so far away,” he claimed. “Oh, well then, let’s go back inside!” Controller said, and the girls ran ahead of us. “Where were you actually?” Hurricane asked, and I turned toward him. “Uhh, If I tell you will you tell me what your hiding?” I responded. “I guess so, but you have to go first,” Hurricane said in defense. “Alright, I was by a big apple and pear tree in Sweet Apple Acres. Shining and I used to go there together…” I informed him. “Oh… I was out at the clubhouse the night you were gone because…”  he took a deep breath, “My parents were fighting… again...” I felt so bad for him… all I could think to do was give him a hug; I then realized his dad wasn’t with the adults, and some other stallion was instead. This was something I hoped would never happen between my parents, and to imagine his world… it made my life feel amazing compared to his. I guess others have it hard too…
