You Seem Familiar

You've known Sunset Shimmer for a long time now. In fact, she reminds you of an old best friend of yours.

You are a college freshman at Starswirl Academy. You know that not many of your friends are there for you anymore, except for some, and one of them happens to be Sunset Shimmer.

But, whatever it is that got you two to be friends is exactly how you and your old best friend came together. You just can't seem to put a finger on why your two friends are exactly alike.

You Seem Familiar

You walk into campus on Friday of the second week of school and everyone is still trying to settle in. But since this has been your dream college, you've been studying and nailing the whole layout of the building.

In the west wing of Starswirl Academy, you go to the cafeteria and hang out for a bit before the start of your first lecture. It wasn't too crowded or quiet, either. The tables looked like those old-fashioned benches you'd find in kindergarten.

You see Nurse Meadowbrook strolling by and quickly waving at you, to which you reciprocate. You've heard a lot of good things about her, including her amounts of kindness and love for every student among campus. She knows you especially because of your hard work during a senior trip from Canterlot High, collecting safari resources.

The season of summer is still here and yet you don't even begin to sweat like all the other students. You can just tell by how many layers of clothing you're wearing.

"Attention students." as the loud speaker came on. "Class will begin for those lower than the senior level in 15 minutes. Thank you."

"I miss having my own schedule." you recalled. "I mean, I got to choose my courses, but not the times I get to come in for each. I guess that's another three years I have to wait."

Suddenly, you look up from your phone to find a girl with a familiar set of red and yellow hair walking towards you. "Sunset Shimmer?"

"Hey there!" as she winked at you. She then took a seat across from you. "How's your day so far?"

"Hehe, nothing's going on yet. I am, however, excited for school today!"

"You've been that way ever since you found this school." Sunset giggled. "But, I understand why you are excited. This is where Twilight's biggest idol teaches."

"Which one?" You asked.

"Both of them."

"Did Princess Twilight even go to our graduation?"

"No, so I had to go back to Equestria and give her diploma, in favor of Principal Celestia."

No wonder you missed out on the big party... You thought to yourself. After graduation, you celebrated with the rest of Sunset's friends, only to have her go home and miss it. At least the both of you properly got your diplomas. "That's cool, I guess."

"Don't worry, at least the other Pinkie Pie threw a party for me, with a whole bunch of other ponies in town."

"You've got a lot of repaying to do now, huh?"

"Haha... Shut up."

"It's okay, Sunset. I know how it feels to be in debt to someone."

"You and me both. I remember when you used to be one of the very few students in Canterlot High that actually supported my evil side. What I did was wrong, but I really appreciate you being there for me."

"Of course, I would've forgiven you either way. Friends are supposed to be there for you and I know you're not the kind of person, or pony, to go around and taking advantage of everyone in the school. I'm glad you didn't stay that way for the rest of your life."

"Yeah thanks. If it wasn't for you and the other girls, I wouldn't have been here right now. Your friendship means a lot to me."

"Same here." You said. "By the way, I don't think I ever told you this."

"What is it?" as Sunset's ear leaned in closer to you.

"Why is it that every time I think about my best friend, you also pop up in my head as well?"

"I have no clue about myself, but I remember how close you two were. I saw you both as the perfect pair!"

"Really? I wasn't that crazy about her, but I did have my feelings. I just wanted to repay her for all the times that she has saved my life."

"What do you mean by that?" Sunset asked.

"I have become depressed so many times that she pretty much comes in every time and helps me out, which I appreciate. However, I think I overdid it WAY too much."

"Nonsense, your emotions don't hurt others that badly and from what I've seen, it looked like your best friend really loves to takes some of her time into comforting you. That's what being a true friend is all about."

"It's the best thing out of everything I love about her. I really wish I could see her again, but..."

"Just because she went to college across the world doesn't mean she forgot about you. She will always have a place in your heart."

"I know..." You started to shed a tear and tried to hold it in, due to your masculinity. You didn't want to start crying immediately after knowing that your best friend has finally parted ways with you.

"Cheer up, man." Sunset smiled and put a hand on your shoulder. "I know what it's like to lose a best friend, and trust me, it's not a good feeling. But you should know that I'll always be there for you too, just like when she was there for you too."

"Thank you, Sunset. I'm sure you didn't lose a best friend."

"Well, since I'm now used to Princess Twilight carrying on with her royal duties for the rest of her life, I'm considering that as her sort of goodbye to me. I could always go back to Equestria, but I don't think there's much to do at this point."

"Hmm, I see. Sunset, I think I remember why you remind me so much of my best friend!"

"Go ahead."

"Other than her being there for me all the time, she was the smartest, most beautiful and sweetest girl I ever met. Even when either of you weren't there, you both always managed to make me smile and continue on with what I do. Like I said before, I had a bit of a crush on her, but I didn't want it to overwhelm our friendship and make things worse between us."

"Aww thanks, that's so sweet of you!" Sunset blushed. "How often did you guys hang out?"

"We hung out with for quite some time, and those were fun times, but I even find it hilarious that I've asked her to hang out with me at the worst possible times! But no matter how busy she was, I always let her attend to whatever errands she needed to run. And yes, I finally took her to prom, which was definitely the best night of my life."

"I can totally see that, being that you really are a nice guy to be around. Did you two ever get close to...kissing?"

"No, she already had a boyfriend, but I took her as my prom date as my way of repaying her. But, we did have some moments of intimacy during the night. I kept on dreaming about my best friend before and after that night."

"Have you ever dreamed about me?" Sunset raised.

"I did, but I didn't want that to overwhelm our friendship. In my opinion, it made sense to dream about my best friend because we've known each other since when we were kids."

"Oh no no, that doesn't bother me at all! I think it's nice to know you have at least one or two people who care about you the most."

"You're one of them!"

"I'm very grateful to be your friend."

"Me too, Sunset." You both reached across the table and gave each other a hug.

"Do you remember the last thing that she said to you?"

"Yeah, she said that she'll miss me very much, and I said the same thing to her as well. We both gave one last hug on the end."

"Are you sure about that? Because she went to my house and didn't even get to say her actual last words to you."

"What were they?"

"I love you..."
