> The Return of the Ursa Minor > by MyMindrigUniverse > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- > Chapter One: Away From Ponyville > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- All of Ponyville were gathered in one spot as they somberly watched the Elements Of Harmony board the Friendship Express. Even though the six friends often left on official "friendship business", the same feeling of gloom always swept over the town as if it were the first time they had to experience the leaving of their friends, and it was worse now then ever before, given the circumstance of the trip. Anyone there could tell you of the atmosphere within the train station. In fact, this odd sense of melancholy was so pungent, Starlight could feel it's presence surround her at the very front of the crowd, it felt as if it was grasping her lungs and squeezing hard enough for each of her breathes to acquire more and more effort. Who could suspect such force from a simple emotion. She closed her eyes and slowly breathed in, then out. Great. She thought. Why must other people's misery effect me. I think my own is plenty enough to make me feel like crap, it doesn't need to be made worse. She opened her eyes and examined the Elements, Applejack and Rarity were both saying goodbye to their tearful sisters. Pinkie of course was talking to her pet, Gummy, in a sob-full embrace as if they would never see each other again. While Rainbow Dash said her goodbyes to Scootaloo, both trying to play the situation off as a simple occurance with their usual bravado, and Fluttershy was forcing her way through the crowd of woodland creatures preventing her escape. But Twilight was missing. Before she could approach them about Twilight's absence, the quite sound of magic being cast from behind caught her ear, but before she could react, a hoof suddenly found itself on her shoulders. "You don't look to good, are you okay Starlight?" came the voice of the Princess of Friendship. Starlight yelped as she jolted at the sudden appearance and breaking of silence within the Station as Twilight appeared out of seemingly nowhere, and she was not alone in her reaction. Everypony had noticed her and moved aside to allow her some space, some with smiles on their faces. Most however, had an expression of even more sorrow then when she was missing. Spike was trailing behind her, carrying two huge traveling packs for the trip. His annoyed expression made it obvious that neither of which were his own. "W-What do you mean?" She said, quickly gathering herself after he embarrassing display a few seconds ago, " I am perfectly fine. I have known for a while now you guys where going off on a journey at the request of Princess Celestia. Any problem I had with you leaving has been taken care of." With a small grin on her face Twilight addressed the obvious, "That reaction to my appearance alone let's me know something is bothering you." "Well in her defense,' came the voice of Spike as he lowered the two travel packs, " I too would be scared if somepony just suddenly appeared behind me and poked my shoulder." "Oh that much is obvious, I am talking about the fact I didn't even mention our trip in my question," she said as her grin widened, "and it looks like Starlight did a bit of digging. I didn't even tell you or anypony else about that part with Princess Celestia. Caught and unable to control herself, she blurted, "I know you think this is common for you guys, but this is the Dragon Lands!" Her voice quickly grew in volume. "Not long ago every dragon wanted to devour us and be on their way. Even with Ember being the new Dragon Lord, that doesn't mean every dragon will be willing to accept such a huge undertaking!" Her face turned bright red as she finished that last sentence. Realizing her outburst sounded more like a whining filly, rather then the pupil of the Princess of Friendship advising her master. She also noticed that she brought forth the fear everypony felt about this mission, and all eyes were on her and Twilight. Even The Elements of Harmony as they waited near the train, already done saying their goodbyes. Ignoring Starlight's outburst, Twilight met her eyes and smiled, " Do not worry, we have faced much, much worse. This is just an act of friendship, we want to show dragons the pony life-style, finally showing them what ponies are like and that we can live in harmony." Starlight cringed at Twilight's bad Element of Harmony joke, but she carried on, looking at the crowd and raising her voice as to address the ponies listening in on their conversation, so that no one could not hear her. " We should only be gone a week, maybe two weeks if we encounter any problems." "Yeah, those problems being the dragons attacking you." Starlight said under her breathe so only Twilight could hear her and not the already on edge Ponyville. Twilight laughed and returned her attention to Starlight. " Do not worry, I am fully certain you are capable of taking care of everypony while we are gone." Silence followed Twilight's announcement for a moment before Starlight's eyes bulged as her mind finally processed the meaning of her masters news, she could not speak, let alone express her mixed reaction of horror, excitement, and pure guilt as Twilight was so willing to trust her, and seeing the reaction everypony had around them,( with the exception of the The Elements, who just stood and smiled at the proclamation) the feeling was mutual. "I know you think it might be too much, but trust my judgement. I believe after the Changeling incident a few weeks back, you are completely capable of leading or at least overlooking ponies." Starlight noticed Twilight's tone quickly turn serious. " Especially in times of panic". Starlight could see that Twilight was troubled by something, " Twilight, do you expect something to happen while you are gone. You know this could be even more reason to-" She was stopped by the sudden sound from the Friendship Express making it known it will leave in one minute, and Twilight's attention was now completely towards her friends and the train. But before rushing off she looked back at Starlight with a worried expression. Ha! Starlight thought. Now your the one making it obvious you are troubled...and it's not helping. But that look on Twilight's face quickly vanished and was replaced with a smile as she hugged Starlight and whispered a goodbye. Then quickly picked the bags and Spike up with her magic as she ran to the train. Surprise briefly caught Spikes expression, and then was quickly followed by irritation, "Hey, if you were going to teleport here and pick them up with your magic, why did I have to carry those bags at all?" Starlight did not hear the reply from Twilight as she looked towards her other friends and noticed The Elements waving enthusiastically towards Starlight and she responded with her own slightly enthusiastic wave. The only possible goodbye at that point as Twilight caught up to them and boarded the train. The Friendship Express then slowly started to move as it increasingly sped away from sight, and wasn't until it was completely and entirely impossible to see, that all of the ponies who attended looked at Starlight, first with uncertainty, then followed by trying smiles. Everypony was willing to trust Twilight's judgement. So, as thirty or so seconds had passed since the Train was out of sight, the crowd disbanded, off to continue their daily life's. Everypony left with the exception of Starlight. Her stomach began to twist as she was now alone within her mind. They're all counting on me now. She noticed it felt even worse to actually have them all depend on her, and now she could not prevent her skin from crawling as she remembered who she was during those times. I thought I got over this...can I really do thi- Her thoughts suddenly stopped as she caught a green figure moving towards her through the side of her eyes. She turned her head towards it and found Gummy slowly moving to her with a letter attached to his back. Impatient and not willing to wait, she used her magic to bring the creature towards her and took the note from him. As she set him down, she opened the letter and was surprised by the the sudden sound of the Party Canon and appearance of "Surprise Confetti" (as Pinkie calls it). I don't know how she does it or how it's even possible to contain sound within paper, Starlight thought. As the remaining confetti had finished raining down, she read the letter: We may be leaving for a bit, but don't be sad, we are still with you in spirit and as your friends we know that no matter what, you are fully capable of guiding anypony through any situation. But if you do ever feel lonely or unable to doing everything by yourself. Know that we have asked four very good friends who are able and willing to help guide you through this experience. Each can be found currently waiting in Twilight's castle. We wish you the best of luck! From, your very best friends, Twilight, Pinkie, Fluttershy, Applejack, Rainbow Dash, and Rarity Starlight felt her eyes water as she finished the letter. I...have the best friends ever. She sniffed and wiped the tears from her eyes. Okay, lets do this. What's the worst that can happen. THE END OF CHAPTER 1 > Chapter Two: Distant Tremors And Unexpected Friends > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Starlight's journey back from the train station went anything but unnoticed as she slowly trotted through Town Square. She felt the gazes of all ponies, near and far, look upon her as she approached the Ponyville bridge. Some tried to hide they're obvious curiosity, while others, Derpy Hooves especially, made no move to obscure they're long term glances. Most eyes following her until she had trotted out of sight. Twilight's word or not, I guess I should have expected this reaction out of everypony. Starlight thought. "I should have taken a more private path back to Twilight's castle" She whispered to herself, as anguish slowly started to take form across her face with each and every step she took closer to the Town Hall Plaza, the most crowded and noisy area in all of Ponyville. Especially at this time of the day. Calm down Starlight. You already resolved yourself back at the train station that you are ready for this. Starlight assured herself, wiping the despaired look off her face, (replacing it with a look of pure confidence, a face only rivaled by Rainbow Dash) as she remembered she was being watched. Yeah! You are completely and without a doubt able to overlook an entire city ag- "Oh Starlight, there you are!" Came the shrilled voice of Mayor Mare standing at the entrance of the Town Hall building. Caught of guard, Starlight's confident grin and posture were replaced with a small shriek and jolt. Crap! I really am not ready am I? She realize, as the mayor wandered over smiling as if she didn't notice Starlight's reaction to being called upon. " You are just in time," Mayor Mare said as she stopped inches away from Glimmer. " I was told by Princess Twilight minutes before she left for the station that you will be taking her place as temporary overseer of her castle and anypony, should a problem arise." Mayor Mares grin widened at that last bit. Starlight might have taken offense if it wasn't quickly followed by. "But more importantly, I was told by The Princess that you would need to hurry over to her castle before her guests became "rambunctious." "Yes I received a letter after they departed, I was on my way now before you...stopped me" "Oh, good then. But I have another reason for stopping you on your way," Mayor placed her hoof on Starlight's shoulders, toothy grin finally disappearing and replaced with a face of assurance. " Although you may feel such massive pressure right now. Know that, no matter what looks anypony gives you, they are 100% willing to trust you." " Thanks Ms. Mare...but I am only to guide everypony if a problem shall arise. You are still the pony in charge." "Of course I am," Her wide grin returning. " I'm just saying... in case of emergency" Glimmer wanted to confront her about her odd behavior. But before words could form, Mayor was off, practically galloping back into the Town hall building. What is with her and Twilight, they act as if they know something is going to happen, but what could it- Her thoughts were interrupted once again, as her body suddenly began to vibrate and she felt the ground begin to faintly shake. Everypony must have felt it too, as many stopped in mid-trot to question whatever was causing this. Some ponies even beginning to panic as they feared the source of this phenomenon. However, the shaking had begun to subside, completely ending almost as sudden as it began. Those that were panicking had stopped to make certain of this fact before all heads had turned in Starlight's direction, eyes hungry for an explanation. Her voice caught in her throat as she tried to come up with an explanation. I don't even know what that was, how can they expect me to answer. It....must have been a creature, a monster, but I don't want to cause panic. Starlight's mind reeled as she thought of the best possible explanation. But before she could answer, another had beaten her to the punch. "Everypony!" Came the very recognizable voice of Mayor Mare, and with her voice all attention was drawn to her as she appeared from behind Starlight. " Do not fret, for there is no threat upon us, it was just simply Vinyl playing music a little too loud, in fact I-er have just returned from her home, um, asking her to turn it down. Everypony may now return to their daily life." Despite it's absurdity, at least to Starlight, everypony looked at one another before smiles returned to their faces, as if this was an actual valid reason with merit, before they all continued their day. And, like the sudden shaking, Ms. Mare had left just as quickly as she appeared, but not before glancing back at Starlight. Her face practically saying, You only have a few hours. Annoyed and frustrated, Glimmer had continued her trot back to Twilight's Castle, although this anger was slightly do to her horrid handling of the situation, it was more so because of the Mayor's suspicious actions. I don't know what's going on, but I better meet these "four very good friends", maybe they can help me figure out what Twi and the mayor are hiding. Twenty Minutes Later Starlight finally found herself at the huge crystallized gates of Twilight's Castle. She let out a sigh of relief at the fact she didn't face any other problem on the walk here after the sudden shaking. But she was suddenly filled with a different type of anxiety as she wondered who these "four friends" could be. It can't possibly be Sunburst, he is still busy practically raising a princess alongside Cadence and Shining Armor. And Trixie.... can barely put on a stable performance, let alone help run a Town. She admitted to herself that she did like surprises, and she was also curious on who else, other than Twlight and The Elements, she could consider a friend in Ponyville. So for the first time today, she looked forward to what was to come as she opened the huge door, with momentary struggle, and entered the castle. While slowly moving to the Map Room, Starlight heard a familiar voice, and as she realized who it came from, her pace had slowed just outside of the room, in reaction to her shock. "We are here because we are both the Princesses who govern all of Equestria. We have actual experience ruling over many ponies. You two are just former would-be villains who tried to overthrow the Kingdom." Came the slightly accented voice of none other than Princess Luna herself. "Would-be? Tried? I'm sorry, I know I am over three thousand years old and my memory isn't what it used to be, but I am fairly certain I actually succeeded in overthrowing your Kingdom at one point. I can even recall ruling it for a time! Unless this is all a lie conjured up by my own brain to boost my ego, don't think I have no experience at forcing others to do what I tell them." Responded a deep and easily recognizable voice. "Discord. Ruling a kingdom isn't as simple as forcing others to abide by your will, it takes more than that to keep a Kingdom stable." Came a soft yet powerful voice. "In fact, it was that very way of governing everypony that led to our rebellion in the first place." The same voice added with a hint of wit. "Well Princess Celestia." Venom seeping into the Draconequu's words. " Avoiding the obvious fact your sister tried to do the very same thing as I," He paused to allow the sisters expected reaction to pass by before continuing. "At least I have even the slightest bit of experience at any form of ruling. This one on the otherhand, hasn't done much of anything other than trick other ponies into believing she is 'Grand and Amazing' or whatever." Discord said pointing to his left. "It's 'Great and Powerful' you dumb dragon!" This voice threw Starlight off completely as she realized it's source. " Also, despite appearances, I do have experience with this type of work." The shrill voice announced with a hint of pride. "First, don't compare me to those over sized half-wits, I am the greatest and most powerful Draconequus, the only Draconequus, but still greatest, to have ever lived. Second, Trixie. Ordering around two bumbling idiots barely above the age of eleven does not count." Discord said with a grin plastered on his goat face. "That's not what I meant!" Trixie said as a face of annoyance reappeared, but then quickly vanished and replaced with a look of smug pride. "As a young filly I was elected Student President of my school, my entire school." She said as she placed a hoof to her chest. The Draconequus laughed aloud while even the sisters across the table could barely hold in a smile. Blushing the blue pony said, " Well it doesn't even matter anyways, I am not here because of my leadership skills, I am hear be- "Hold that thought." Discord said raising from Twilight's Throne. " I sense the presence of a certain insecure pony at the other end of that door." Before Starlight could react to the reveal of her eavesdropping. The door suddenly opened and she was now face to face with her "helpers", still shocked, not at her being caught, but the simple fact of who they were. Even though she heard them speak from the other side, it was still astonishing to see these four in one room. Trixie sat at Rainbow Dash's Throne with both hooves resting on the map, a look of embarrassed anger was replaced with gleeful excitement as she looked upon Starlight. At the same time, both Princess Celestia and Princess Luna sat on Pinkie Pie and Rarities Thrones, and as they realized who stood at the door, they quickly jumped out of their temporary seats and stood behind the table with a fixed expression of indifference, followed by small, calm smiles. Finally, Discord himself was the one who opened the door and now rested in a mocking version of the royal bow at her presence. While at the same time Discord was also sitting calmly at Twilight's throne. " Oh don't be shy," said both Discords. " I must admit that this is quite the gathering, but we won't bite." As the two finished, the sisters approached Starlight as she entered the room hesitantly, and as she did so, the Discord by the door vanished. " It is truly a pleasure to actually get to talk with you at last Starlight Glimmer." Celestia said, as a excited smile surprisingly appeared upon the Elder Princess's face. Rolling her eyes, Luna added. " You wouldn't believe the look upon my sister's face as she heard that Twilight was giving her pupil such a huge roll while she left. She was very proud of you...and so was Twilight." Celestia shot Luna an irritated glance. " T-Thank you, I'm so glad that you are the four that she asked to help." Starlight managed to say, surprise still fresh upon her mind and face. "Why of course, " Discord said, now directly behind Starlight. " If you were paying attention. We all, or most of us anyways, have great 'leadership skills'. However, me being here isn't because I want to help, but because I was asked by my dear Fluttershy to help guide you with my immense wisdom...." His face contorted into a deep frown as he paused. "Also, I was assigned a friendship lesson by her royalness herself that stated I was to help a 'true friend' in need, and I could either go to the Dragon Lands with Fluttershy, or help you, and seeing how I truly hate dragons more than anything in this world, I decided to pick you as my...friend in need. " He added. " Yes well, our reason for being here is similar, however without the assignment." The two Princesses smirked as they looked over at Discord, who growled in annoyance to Luna's remark. Finally recovering from her initial reaction, Starlight spoke. " Wait. So I understand why you three can help, and I am greatly thankful. But, " She glanced behind her, over to Trixie, who was now next to Discord. " Why are you here, how are you here? I thought you said you were going to be at Manehattan performing your biggest gig yet." " Which was obviously a lie. " Trixie said in a sing-song voice as she passed Discord and hugged her best friend. " I wanted to surprise you, and with that look on your face, I think I succeeded." She said smiling. "Oh I don't know about that," Discord interrupted, rolling his eyes." I mean I'm surprised Starlight over here didn't suspect anything the second you announced, you of all ponies was able to land a gig in Manehattan." "Yes, well imagine me being equally surprised Twilight would ever consider you a worthy adviser to Starlight... Even more so to the fact you agreed." Trixie retorted. " How cute, now try answering that very question for me. Why are you hear?" Discord said in his most serious tone all evening. "Yeah, I don't mean to offend you. But you...kinda aren't fit to advise anypony on how to rule a town." Starlight found herself admitting. Looking aghast, Trixie responded, " Well of course I am not, if I was allowed to finish my reason earlier, you would know." Annoyance showing itself as she talked. She trotted over to the table and climbed on top of it, as she did this, all in the room turned to her, giving the performing pony their full, curious, attention. Trixie cleared her throat, and dimmed the room with her magic before speaking in a loud, dramatic voice. " I, THE GREAT AND POWERFUL TRIXIE, HAS BEEN ASKED BY RECURRING RIVAL AND CURRENT PRINCESS OF FRIENDSHIP, TWILIGHT SPARKLE, TO JOIN STARLIGHT GLIMMER'S TEMPORARY TEAM OF ADVISERS WITH THE SOLE PURPOSE OF PROVIDING- " She paused as she jumped off the table and landed on her hind-legs and raised her two front hooves in the air, with a huge grin across her face . "MORAL SUPPORT!!!" Awkward silence followed the grand announcement before Discord sighed in disappointment, "Tis' truly a dark day when I am forced to work with such pathetic creatures such as you Trixie. " "Shut it!" Trixie shouted as she returned to all fours. "No need to be rude Discord." Celestia said as she moved in between the two. " There is wisdom in Twilight appointing a close friend to Starlight's side....especially if anything were to happen." As Celestia said that last bit, everyponies faces were replaced with seriousness and slight worry. Although, Discord's face of misery was due to Trixie, rather than any conjectured threat. Starlight's mind clicked at those words, as memory of Twilight and Mayor Mare's actions returned to her. "Wait, why is are some ponies acting so strange?" She asked, gaining everyponies attention. "Twilight and Ms. Mare both seemed like they knew something might happen while The Princess of Friendship left with her friends to the Dragon Lands. I wanted to find out the source for their actions, but it seems you four are also in on this secret!" Her voice started to once again, rise in volume. While at the same time she could feel her temper beginning to spark from within. All faces, even Discord this time, contorted in a way that proved they had been caught in some act. They all glanced at each other while Starlight stood determined for answers, and after a time all nodded and Princess Celestia came forward. "You see Starlight, both Luna and I were never meant to help you, but we decided we must, after the events of last night. " Luna joined Celestia's side as her sister continued. " Know that, even though the trip to the Dragon Lands was scheduled to be held today about a moon ago, I didn't learn of who was taking Twilight's place until just yesterday, where she and The Elements privately announced you as temporary overseer of Ponyville..." Celestia's voice caught as her head lowered, where a hint of sadness and guilt could be seen across her face. Realizing her sister's hesitation, Luna continued. " Nopony thought anything was to happen, Twilight wanted to give you a small test. When suddenly, The Element of Laughter, Pinkie Pie, started to shake uncontrollably. Her Pinkie Senses were acting up like never before." "Pinkie what?" Starlight found herself saying, completely at a lost to the seriousness of such a thing occurring. " Let me explain this part," Discord interrupted, as he stepped forward. " The odd pink pony that you call friend, is known to be a very perceptive one, she can sense certain things, and her body reacts according to those certain things her mind picked up on, it's something she deemed her 'Pinkie senses." He stopped momentarily as if to consider something. " Actually, I think may have had a hand in her weird ability. You see, when I ruled Equestria almost two thousand years ago. I would put curses and hexes of misfortune upon anypony I deemed annoying. Something I remember doing to a pony known as, Pumpkin Pie, who always went on about being optimistic since the future may always turn out different from the past, or whatever. " He paused as he tried to hold in a smile. " So being me, I put a spell on him, which would allow him to predict his future. It was an act of showing him his terror filled future...... however he was still optimistic even after he was shown his demise. So he trotted off, jolly as ever. Truly didn't understand that one......" Discord's voice trailed off as he reminisced. "And that means what exactly?" Starlight was now impatiently irritated. "Wha- Oh right yes. " He said, as he violently shook his head. " The ability must have passed down from him into the next generation, and so on for two thousand years. Although a tad different. Pinkie can sense any state of chaos or misfortune. While Pumkin could only feel his own demise. " "So I see," Starlight was now in deep thought of how useful such a ability was, before quickly returning to the problem at hand. " So she 'violently shook', is that really bad?" "It is." Replied Celestial. " Everypony in Ponyville, us included, know of the accuracy of her senses. She has never been wrong. And completely unstoppable shaking is an indication that something big and horrible is to come." On queue. Before anypony could reply or interject. A rumbling came, just like earlier that day. But more violently, and more powerful. Then, much to everponies surprise, a violent roar ripped through the sky outside. "I really hate my powers sometimes." Discord said as he saw 6 ginormous creature appeared from the Everfree Forest. END OF CHAPTER 2 > Chapter Three: The Ursa Major And The Five Constellations > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- "So, I guess Pinkie Pie's 'senses' do work just as well as Pumpkin Pie's." Noted Discord as he and the rest within Twilight's Castle looked out the front gate. There they found six immensely shaped beast's walking, or in one case flying, towards Ponyville no less than 2000 meters away. Appearing from the Everfree Forest. "An Ursa Major? W-What is a Ursa Major doing with five other beasts....and why are they making they're way to Ponyville?" Starlight asked as she quivered at the size of the group. "That....is not an Ursa Major, at least not completely." Assured Celestia. "It is barely an adult, at least in the late stages of it's teenage years." "Adult or not, it's still huge!!" Screamed Trixie, showing even more fright than Starlight. "She is right sister. That may not be a full Ursa Major, but it is still immensely powerful." Luna said as she joined her sister's side. "Plus, those beast's beside it are fully grown... In fact, those seem to be five of the strongest and most ferocious constellations there are." "Which ones are they?" Starlight asked. "The one that's flying is, Aquila The Eagle." Celestia announced."The one that travels to the right of the Ursa Major is Taurus The Bull. To the left of The Ursa is, Aries The Ram. Behind the Ursa is, Canis Major, The Great dog....Finally, the strongest of all and ahead of the pack is, Leo The Lion." "I remember that old dog...not Canis, I mean Leo of course. It took a while to outrun him after I replaced his mane with Celestia's. It was enlarged of course." Discord chuckled at the thought. "I guess he really doesn't like any color that isn't yellow." "I remember that too." Celestia said, now looking at her mane with a hint of embarrassment. "But now is not the time to laugh at the past, we must take care of the task at hand." "Yeah Discord, stop reminiscing and solve our problem here." Came Trixie's voice as she hid behind Starlight. "Wait!" Interjected Starlight. "How can we be certain that they come here with the purpose to destroy, I mean the last time we had any Constellation come to Ponyville. It was because it was angered or triggered by somepony. But we know that nopony would dare anger anymore beasts after that attack." But before an answer came from her companions. She was answered by the Ursa Major itself. WE COME FOR REVENGE. YOU HAVE TAKEN SOMETHING FROM EACH OF US. SO NOW WE DESTROY YOUR CITY! The voice was not something that was heard aloud, but from within the mind. IF WE ARE TO BE AS CLUMSY AS TO ALLOW ANY OF YOU PONIES LIVE AND WONDER WHY WE ATTACKED? KNOW YOUR ARROGANCE WAS YOUR DOWNFALL! And as the voice left the mind of everypony. The six constellations began to quicken their pace. "There! They do want to kill us. Now can you snap your fingers and be away with them Discord?" Trixie loudly 'advised' (as she would put it). "Oh, I am afraid I am not strong enough for that." Discord replied in a straight face. However, everypony had a different reaction, even the two Princesses showed faces of stunned offense. "What do you mean, 'not strong enough', you were able to topple Starswirl in a duel," Luna reminded, breaking the silence. "You can warp reality, make volcanos appear from out of thin-air. You can create an opposite realities for the fun of it. At base level, the only being more capable then you in power and magic, is The Tree Of Harmony!" Luna was now angry as she closed in on Discord. "Yes...Well you see, I can't simply snap a being taller than myself out of existence." Discord admitted, which obviously took a whack at his pride. "In fact, I can't simply wish away a living, talking, being from existence. Not even I can do such a thing. However, I can control and create anything that is not living, or strong enough to actually fend for itself. But that can wait, we must fight!" "Wait Discord! Explain this concept further." Celestia commanded, obvious anger starting to find it's way on her face. "We have little time Celestia." Discord suggested, trying to avoid explaining his only true weakness. "As we speak, those beasts are confidently strutting their way to us, ready to destroy everything and everypony within this village. We only lack immediate problem as they want us to feel their presence and to feel fear." "That means the only way to save everypony would be you, but since you seem to lack the ability. We may need to know everything if we have any chance at accumulating any worth-while plan. NOW. TELL. US." Celestia's voice was now filled with such authority and power, even Discord, usually immune to other's ordering him to do anything, found the sudden urge to let out all his deepest secrets. And after a few long moments of consideration, he finally gave in and explained everything. "I can warp reality yes, but I always find it fighting back. Each time I snap my finger or cast a spell. It feels like I am being resisted by another. Of course, I win in the end but it is still immensely difficult." He demonstrated by shifting a nearby house into a huge boulder, he then snapped his finger and it returned to being a house. "Now, add another's will. Like a pony for example. I am now fighting two sentient beings at once. That is really hard, as no being on this planet, dumb or not, is willing to just give itself up to my will. I have tried, trust me, but it is just to hard for me." "But, you are basically a god, you are above most beings, shouldn't our will mean little to what you are." Starlight questioned. Slightly intrigued at the rules of the Draconequu's powers. "Don't underestimate the power of emotions, I thought this group would understand that more so than I." Discord let out a small smirk at his remark before continuing. "And the very will to keep oneself alive is no laughing matter. It is one of the strongest mental desires in the world, and feeling or emotion is in turn, also one of the strongest forces of power in the universe itself. Will is simply something I can barely control, now two at the same time, one of which is reality itself. Impossible." "That is why I often manipulate something without a will of it's own. Tails, Manes, Horns, Wings. I can do that, but even that has it's limits. Something like size usually comes into play. I can wish away Twilight's horn, but not Celestia's. With her, I can only manipulate her mane. And if I were to come across an Ursa Major sized Unicorn. I would be lucky to simply be able to clip it's pointy toenails." "Oh and teleportation is different too. That is magic were I simply move life forms, not re write its history. But that too, depends on size." Discord now pointed at the Ursa Major and group. " Those six are just too big." "You say that emotion is a hard thing to control, yet I was told by Princess Twilight that you were able to change Fluttershy into a pony so much different from who she is. What about that?" Luna asked in confusion. Barely keeping up with the explanation. While this happened however, the group noticed the panic from Ponyville begin as it now was loud enough to be noticed by Starlight and the rest. As it happened however, The Ursa Major and it's band of vengeful creatures were now 1000 meter away. Taking their time to allow true horror to spread all throughout Ponyville. So now Discord's explanation was hastier than before. "Oh but that is were you are wrong Princess. Fluttershy, surprisingly enough, has a small side to her that is quite vicious, she has shown that side of hers a few times, or so she has told me, and after each time, she tries to increasingly hide it with more effort. What I did to her that one time was simply enhance that emotional side of hers. Which is completely within my power. There is a bit of a difference between enhancing ones personality and completely wiping away somepony, emotion and all. "So we now know what you can not do." Celestia said as she thought up possible counter measures with the information she just received. "You got that right. Kinda' diminishes your cool factor doesn't it." Trixie mockingly added. "At least I was ever cool to begin with, little pony." Retorted Discord, almost as if he was waiting for Trixie's snide comment. "Enough, both of you!" Celestia commanded, returning from her thoughts, ready with a plan. "The Ursa Major, on it's own is a problem. But five, even more powerful creatures along with it, that will be almost too much for even us." Celestia slightly lowered her head at the announcement. "But, we may not have to completely defeat these beasts. They mention losing something dear to them and that is why they attack. I need to find out what this is immediately." "But we need to defend Ponyville. It is my- I mean our job." Starlight reminded. "That is true, Starlight Glimmer, that is why we will need to split our forces." Replied Luna, readying herself as she drew upon her powers. "I plan on taking Aries and Aquila. Hopefully I may be able to hold them for as long as I possibly can." Celestia then announced her take. "I plan on taking Leo an-" "I don't think so princess." Discord interrupted with the happiest of grins. "I will take on Leo, I actually have more experience in fighting him, in fact, I could probably even get him talking about this little raid on Ponyville...." the Draconequu paused in consideration. "While i'm at it, might as well take the Ursa Major." "Fine then, I suppose your reason holds water... I guess I will take on Canis and Taurus." As the words left the eldest sisters mouth. Power gathered within her horn. "Wait, what about the royal guards." Trixie stammered, as this plan obviously meant her being left alone. "Why don't any of you warn them...wait, why aren't they even here to begin with." "If we are to fall, they are what stands in the way of those beasts and everypony in Equestria. They should be weakened considerably by our duels at that point. Sheer numbers would win the day." Luna answered. "But that is a fate that won't come to pass. I swear upon it in the name of Equestria!" Before anypony could react. The Princess of The Night vanished as she rocketed to the constellations. Who in turn, reacted by readying themselves, with the expection of Aquila. Who soared in the direction of The Princess. A second after it departed from its own band of creatures. The constellation and The Princess clashed, and sparks of energy flew through the air in the colors of blue, purple, and black. As the clash commenced, the sky let out a screech of pain as it withstood the combined power of the fastest being in the world and one of the most powerful ponies to ever live. And all within the city felt the immense force. "Impatient to no end, couldn't even listen to the rest of the plan." Celestia whispered to herself before gazing upon Trixie and Starlight. "You two are tasked with journeying into the Everfree Forest and finding any clue's to what was taken from the Constellations. Go now and cast upon yourselves a spell that allows me to hear you from long distances. You are capable are you not Starlight?" Holding back obvious terror and doubt, Starlight nodded, Trixie collapsed on her hind-legs. "Then go!" Shouted the Princess. And even faster than her sister, she bolted away from sight. Onward, to challenge the eldest of Constellations. "So I guess it is my turn to act." Discord announced clasping his hands together in obvious excitement. " Oh, and don't forget, you two, no matter what anypony does to try and stop you in the city as you make your way to the forest. Ignore them, it will only make things worse." Before a reply could be heard. Discord vanished and appeared at the edge of the city, 50 feet in the air and waving the huge Lion like being over to him, inviting its company. Now, only two ponies remained at the doors to Twilight's castle. Each in understandable consideration. Especially Trixie, still frozen on the steps of the castle. Now is the time to act. Make Twilight's decision a wise one. GO! And as the thought left her mind, she began to gallop through the town, casting the spell of private communication around her, as she moved. Out of her daze. Trixie watched Starlight go, and quickly snapped out of her stunned silence and pursued Starlight. "I am not about to let my best friend go alone! BRING IT YOU DUMB STARS!" And together, the two ponies entered a city encased in true fear and panic. END OF CHAPTER 3 > Chapter Four: Luna, The Ram, And The Eagle > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- This chapter will be following Luna and her fight with Aquila and Aries As the clash continued. Luna watched the town. Ponies were running amok, clashing with one another, running over one another. Some even resorted to pushing and stealing from others. It was truly chaos. I bet Discord feels right at home within Ponyville right now...in fact, we may need to make sure he isn't contributing to this madness in any way. Luna mused, nearly blinded by her opponents power. But, as her glare moved through the city, she nearly faltered to the force of Aquila, her surprise was so great. As the site of two very familiar ponies caught her attention. One of swirled hair and a light pink coat, while the other was of a blue body and milk-white mane. Two very familiar ponies indeed. What are those two doing running through this madness. What is there purpose. However, Luna's thought subsided as she noticed another Constellation move at concerning speed toward her duel with the eagle. Fearing a low blow from this interrupter. The Princess jerked her body aside, putting much strain on her body as she did so, and watched as Aquila shot through the sky and into a nearby mountain, shattering the entire top half of the hulking formation, but not without taking a small bit of her flesh as it happened. Without much time to react in pain or laugh at the beast's pathetic crash. Luna turned to see Aries making it's way towards her at top speed, obviously enraged at her humiliating it's comrade. But the princess was already with a plan. She gathered her magic for 5 whole seconds, each moment wishing that the ram would not catch up to her, and released every bit of power she stored. Sending a sizable wave of energy towards the beast, too close and angry to dodge the purple energy. Got you, you hard headed buffoon. Luna triumphantly smiling as the beast noticed the power would cripple him, should the blast be taken head on. Suddenly, Aries vanished after a loud screech was heard all throughout the land and a near invisible force swooped past the creature in need. The blast was late by a mere few inches. The bolt, however, continued and arched towards the ground, destined to decimate at least half of the Everfree Forest. A fool blinded by confidence, I was! Is all that came to mind as she witnessed it nearly touching down. Expecting a boom, Luna shielded her ears with magic. The explosion occured, but not within the Everfree Forest. In fact it barely contacted with the ground. Thanks to an immense poll covered in dark magic springing from within the forest, shooting Luna's gathering of power into the skies, until finally unleashing it's power throughout the night skies. Vaporizing all nearby clouds. Much to the surpirise of the Alicorn. She quickly glanced at the poll after the magic encasing it disseapered. The source of the object was easily identifiable, as it was shamelessly sprayed in black and green panting ( which was done poorly), and in the center of the poll the words, Property of Discord, could be found. Luna shot her head over towards the direction of Ponyville, were she spotted the Draconequus. He could be found chatting with the constellation, Leo The Lion, who looked impatient, and the group leader, the Ursa Major. Who was a few steps above simple irritation. Suddenly, Discord snapped his finger he had hidden behind his back, and the poll disappeared. I will need to thank him for fixing my blunder later. Luna's pride taking quite a blow at the thought. But she suddenly jolted in realization she was still in the middle of a battle. Yet, Aries was gone, and the skies she had decided to fight the eagle were quiet and empty, the bull and dog fighting her sister somewhere off in the distance, and that sly draconequus talking the lion and bear to death. The princess suspected why the sudden silence. That flash and loud screech must have been Aquila. She saved Aries. But why am I not immediately facing danger. Could...I have taken a piece of both of them as they fled. Would explain Discord easily deflecting my power, it must have lost most of it's strength in weakening those two...I must track them. However, a very familiar voice could be heard behind her as it made it's presence known with a cough. Reacting to this, Luna turned, gathering magic power from within. But her power instantly vanished at the site of who stood, or flew, before her. "Careful now, Princess. Wouldn't want to destroy Ponyville as you haphazardly throw another one of those over-sized beams of energy." The Draconequus looked at the Alicorn with a grin as he floated in mid-air. But his size was that of a chicken, very different compared to normal, and to Luna. "Your small." Was all she could say as she was taken aback by this creature. Luna always wondered how such a silly being could very well be above all others in this world when it came to magic. I guess this is the Universe's way of compensating with such immense power. If he was anymore bloodthirsty, we would all probably be dead. The thought sent slight shivers all throughout, as she looked at Discord, who deepened his smile, as if he was waiting for her to pick up on something. And she did. "Your battle," Realization finally coming over the princess. "Tell me you didn't leave everypony there to fend for themselves just to gain a cheap laugh out of my reaction." Her voice half horrified, half angered. "And there be my expected reaction!" Discord shooting his head back as he laughed in maddened joy. "That alone is compensation enough from your sister, for asking me to 'fill you in' or whatever." Before Luna could repeat her question. The God of Chaos responded. "Don't worry, my little pony, I am small because I am Copy Discord. I do small tasks for my original, things he himself can't be there for. But don't worry, the second I return to my original body, he too will have a laugh at your naivety. Hope it doesn't hinder his battle though." Ignoring her embarrassment, as well as the Draconequus and his jokes, Luna found herself worried. " My sister has something to say, is she in need of help, did my opponents unfairly join her duel? What could it be? Tell me!" "Actually, it is due to your sudden departure. I believe she called it 'impatient to no end.' If you had stayed a mere few seconds later, you would have known that Princess Celestia has ordered the two side-ponies of this epic battle to travel within that forest, you almost destroyed a few minutes ago, if I may add, with the purpose of finding the cause of this invasion," The little Discord was now mocking as he said. "A task almost torn apart by you." Even though she was a ruler of Equestria, she could not stop her face from turning purple, as she felt a grander dose of embarrassment and guilt flow throughout her body, and all these negative emotions were plastered throughout her face. Noticing the face and taking surprising pity on the Alicorn, Discord softly assured, as his expression became calm, "Don't worry, it was a mistake, we all make them, I be a grand example of making a few. But look at me now. Better then ever, a purpose and everything. So don't look so glum, and find those two little troublemakers and make them pay. Or give them a beating, whichever works." Before Luna could reply, 'Copy Discord', vanished. He is right. Track these two and finish them... Luna's head suddenly shot up in realization. No, just postpone any advancement upon the city. Sister must not blame them for their rage, she suspects something out of the control of the Constellations, maybe that they be manipulated by some unknown creature...However, she is risking the lives of many by doing so. But I think she understands this greater than anypony. Although Discord's words were heartfelt and meant to inspire. The Princess of the Night could not stop herself from feeling slightly guilty at the thought she almost made her sisters burden unbearable by her hotheaded behavior at the face of danger. She couldn't brush it off as a simple mistake. She has lead thousands of ponies into battle before. Defended fortresses with excellent fortifying and strategic skills. Could she truly be so rusty and out of practice. The thought only held onto her mind for a few seconds before being replaced with determination and a sense of further redemption. Well, I guess it's time I go and gain back that experience. And just like that, she was was gone. Off in search of the two wounded Constellations. Now, were would a overgrown, wounded eagle carrying a overgrown, wounded sheep with horns, be hiding in this vast forest. The Princess noticed she was now beginning to move further and further from Ponyville, ponies and houses, mere dots at this point. She assured herself that her sister and Discord were able enough to defend the city while she was absent and was now using every bit of magical power she had in search for the two run-away Constellations. Shortly after her wide search began, she suddenly picked up the presence of two ponies traveling within the Everfree Forest, two ponies she found out to be Starlight and Trixie. So they entered the forest safely, Luna relaxed at the thought of their safety. Anywhere was better than Ponyville right now. Even that cursed place. Good luck, friends. After around 10 minutes of constant searching she picked up something. Feeling the sensation flow throughout her body and finally a path was visible to her. A stream of blue magic was now leading her somewhere. Somewhere closer to Ponyville. And just like that. She moved at top speed, following the magic's lead and found herself near the mountain she had Aquila destroy. The thought of that moment brought a stinging pain to a place just under her wing. The wound that was received as she barely dodged the eagle. She wasn't expecting the birds speed, even with the knowledge of it's famed swiftness. Another sign of her past arrogance. I will have to make up for that mistake now. She thought, descending quickly towards the end of the magic's trail and into a crevice, created by the early attack on the mountain. A small twinkle was seen at the center of the crumbled rocks, and that was all it took for the princess to bolt towards the formation, and in what appeared to be hesitation from the small light, it was replaced with a ferocious ascension towards Luna. It started to slowly grow in size and shape. Turning into the familiar figures that of Aquila the Eagle and Aries the Ram, determination across the features of both beasts face. The same determination seen on one that is troubled by the possibility of death. As the three were about to collide, Luna could not help but think, They hid from me by becoming small and staying near. Smart. Commending their tactics. Luna smiled as she felt the combined powers of the two suddenly hit her. Thankful for their wounds and lack of fully powered magic, she was able to stand as an equal to two Constellations, maybe more as she felt herself winning the duel. But, a new found force was felt upon the Princess of the Night, as she witnessed a thin line of energy hit her opponents. There was a slight reaction of pain, before the two beings began to mix into one entity, and a sudden increase of power was obvious. She reacted in stunned surprise and felt herself instantly begin to crack under the immense power they...it, now held. A few seconds of this pressure and she began to lose control, before she was sent back, hundreds of meters away by this newly formed Constellation, this fusion. Something had changed them, and a enormous sense of fear entered her as she saw the same weird energy descend upon positions no more than a few hundred feet away from each other and her. Screams of pain and agony could be heard by the Constellations throughout Ponyville before vicious roars replaced it. What is happening. Was all Luna could think of as her opponent sped towards her. Ready to kill. END OF CHAPTER FOUR > Chapter Five: Fight Of The Eldest > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- This chapter follows Celestia's battle with Canis, The Great Dog, and Taurus, The Bull. This all happened during the events of last chapter. Celestia lightly flapped her wings as she flew high enough to be face to face with the Constellations. She watched the Ursa Major and it's remaining companions hesitate from her arrival, which followed her sister, who still stayed in quite the impressive clash of magic with Aquila the Eagle. She allowed herself a glance towards Twilight's Castle, and watched as Starlight and Trixie made way into the now chaotic, Ponyville. Worry filled the princess at the thought of these two ponies, she knows next to nothing about, undertaking a task of up-most importance. Why was it so important? Well some ponies overlook motive and reason, and would love nothing but to go and win their battles with brute strength (like her sister). But Celestia has lived and ruled long enough to know that understanding an opponent can very well be the most important factor in their defeat. Sometimes, the didn't even need to fight. Both sides could come to an agreement or understanding. So this task, was probably the most important role she could give anypony right now. Especially if her suspicions were correct. The thought deepened her worry. Celestia shook her head in defiance to this growing unease. You promised yourself and Twilight that you were willing to trust her judgement. Plus she did save all of Equestria, alongside win over the Changeling empire, leading a group with Discord in it's midst. That in of it's self deserves merit. Reassured, the princess returned her attention to the Constellations. However, three were missing. Aries the Ram had headed over to Luna, while it seemed that Discord was able to catch the attention of Leo and the Ursa. Leaving Canis and Taurus. The latter looking about ready to charge head on. However, Canis made the first move, surprising the bull and the princess. "Let's begin then," Celestia said to herself while gathering magical energy around her horn. Now beginning a quickened flight to the dog, who now ran within the Everfree Forest, trampling trees and wildlife alike in it's charge, Taurus was running side by side with the dog. Celestia let out a sizable ball of destructive magic as she neared the two creatures. Her opponents reacted by dodging the ball, allowing it to pass in between them. Leaving a gap. Good. the princess thought as the ball turned direction and made way towards Taurus's backside, unsuspecting of the magic in it's onslaught. The attack hit, sending the bull to the ground, destroying many trees and shrubs. Canis only allowed it's downed companion a momentary glance before returing it's attention to Celestia. Fury plain in it's expression. But, the Princess of the Sun, did not falter as she then enveloped herself in magic, strong enough for the coming clash. The great dog did so as well, moments before the two collided. The impact finally came and showed even greater force and power than Princess Luna's bout with Aquila, which has seemed to have ended with the latter crashing into a nearby mountain. However, showing obvious dominance in power, Celestia pushed the beast back with her superiority. Almost too easy. Celestia thought, before turning a suspicious glance to where Taurus should be laying on the ground. But the Constellation was nowhere to be seen. Suddenly, before the princess could react, an immense force crashed into the side of Celestia's magical shield, which resisted for only a short while before breaking and sending her deeper into the forest, pain throughout Celestia's body. Steadying herself with her wings, still feeling dazed by the blow, Celestia was caught off guard by the suddenness of the two Constellations. Who where already on-top of her location. It's too late. Was all the princess could think as she prepared herself for the creatures, who had triumphant sneers across their faces. A sudden flash of light had lit the surroundings of the battle. Noticing it, the two Constellations briefly glanced skyward, towards the source. Irritated faces were quickly replaced with horror as the two stopped and shielded themselves with magical power. Celestia, still in shock, was confused before she too directed her attention towards the source. An immense ball of magic, similar to her own, although not quite at the level she had displayed minutes before, was seen closing in on their location. Luna. Is all that came to mind as the purple and blue ball of energy closed in on her location. Fear took the princess for a moment as she readied as shield, uncertain of it's efficiency. However. The soil, only a mere 5 meters away in front of her, parted. As an immense object sprang from the ground covered in chaotic dark magic, and crashed into Luna's seemingly misfired ball of destructive magic. Throwing it into the air and finally exploding, covering the night skies in blue and purple fireworks. Discord? Was all that came to mind as Celestia stared at the object. It's magic dissipated and showed it's almost normal form (aside from a crude paint job done only minutes before). Celestia straightened in realization, and turned to watch the two Constellations, beginning to notice the lack of any true impact upon their shields. I need to regain control! Celestia gathered at least half of her magical powers and released it in a beautiful blaze of ferocity. Shattering the dog and bull's defenses and sending both creatures flying into the air. There, that should give me time. The princess hoped as she forced her tired self to look upon the stars. Hoping to find her sister. But Luna was gone, nowhere to be seen. She needs to know. Her hotheadedness almost got me killed. Plus, any evidence Starlight could gather would be destroyed if Luna doesn't know to hold back in this forest. Ready to move but fearing the return of her opponents, Celestia fought within herself, unsure of any option being risk free. Celestia then remembered Discord's help with the poll and searched around for it instinctively. Of course it wasn't there anymore. But she was already with a plan. The princess struggled to get up, but was able to manage at the thought of her ponies welfare returned to her. It scared her that, within these woods, the state of Ponyville was unknown to her. One thing at a time. Concentrate Celestia, and hope that Draconequus answers. Resolved, the Princess of the Sun began to gather what was left within herself and put it all into getting the attention of a certain Spirit of Chaos. It only took a few seconds before she got a response. You know, I am a bit busy right now. Leo and this Bear really do hate talking. Barely got anything out of them...in fact we are fighting right now. So out with it! Came the familiar baritone voice of Discord within the princess's mind. "Can you by any chance tell Luna our plan, if you don't remember, she ran off before i could appoint Starlight her mission. This could get even worse if she stays ignorant of these things, especially if she does not know I wish to not harm the Constellations beyond incapacitation." Celestia answered, although struggling to keep her regal way of talking. You are extremely lucky that if I didn't have to waste my time saving you and this forest earlier, I would have denied you my help. But since Luna has shown her reckless nature to be an eyesore for even me. I suppose I could send out Copy Discord to inform the brat of her faults. Thus lowering her self-esteem....hey this might be fun. "Thank you Discord." Celestia sighed, hoping Discord would go easy on her sister. As she felt the Draconequus leave her mind. Celestia returned her attention to her surroundings. Empty. Could I have hit them harder than I expected. She mused, as she continued her search, on the ground, for the two eldest Constellations. Hoping she did not do, in turn, what she wishes to prevent her sister from doing. Suddenly. A voice came to her, feminine, annoyed, and tired. But respectful. Starlight. "Princess? Princess? Damn, is my spell still up?" The mare's voice now raising in volume. "Maybe it turned off, or you exhausted all your magic. It happens when you keep a spell on for thirty minutes without using it. Kinda just goes away." "Trixie," warned Starlight. "Magic doesn't work like that, plus even if it did, thirty minutes would not be en-" "My little ponies?!" Celestia said in shocked surprise. It was truly great to know that they could contact her. The lack of alarmed ponies in the background indicated their presence in the forest. "It works!" Starlight said in excitement, cutting off her argument with Trixie. "Princess Celestia. We have entered the forest after much difficulty, but we almost died from some magical orb, and Trixie is increasingly getting more annoying." Starlight stopped to possibly snuff another rejection from her companion before she continued. "I need to know why I am here again? I could be helping you or Princess Luna fight the Constellations instead of...whatever it is I am here for!" The ponies habit of raising her voice was resurfacing in Starlight's little rant. But, Celestia seemed to ignore her behavior, and responded with the truth. "Not only have you shown a remarkable ability to lead, but even Twilight often praises your genius. But it seems you have much to learn. Allow me to share with you my most important secret in handling threats of any kind." The princess paused. "Yes?" Starlight asked, allowing her bookworm curiosity to take over. "A ponies motivation. What makes anything do anything. Learning about ones opponent could give us a substantial advantage over any creature. Take your past escapades into account. I was informed by Twilight your bout with her, a Alicorn mind you, nearly ended with you winning. Now how do you think that was possible against somepony superior in magic and capabilities than yourself?' "I...followed Twilight everywhere she went. I learned her habits, her fears, likes, dislikes, how she handled a situation, with prep and without. I collected data, calculated outcomes, and practiced." Starlight seemed more and more ashamed, with a hint of embarrassment too, as she continued explaining. Trixie watched in slight shock at her friends confession. "Exactly. You made a seemingly impossible task seem possible. You did so much by yourself and was so close to coming out on top. Now imagine what two princess's, a nearly all-knowing Draconequus, and yourself would be able to accomplish if we could gain information on all six Constellations. As I admit, I seem to not have made as much of an effort to learn more about these beings other than their name in the past thousand years." Regret clear in the Princess of the Sun's voice. "I guess your right," the pony sighed in defeat. "Wait a minute," interjected Trixie. "Those events are completely different. She basically stalked Twilight night and day, she is worse than me when I spied on her. It would make sense for her to have the upper-hand on somepony. But this? This is just waltzing into their home and taking a look. Not much can be learned from just that...I speak from experience." "That may be true Trixie. But if my suspicions are correct. Just simply searching their residence will be enough to find validation, to them of course, to attack and blame us." The princess lowered her voice. "I may be wrong, but I suspect we were set up." Celestia noticed a flicker in the distance as she finished her sentence. She began walking to the location of the occurrence. Which was a single tree with a hole in the center. "What do you mean set up? Who would want to do that, who could do that. This-" Starlight's voice suddenly cut off. "Starlight! Trixie! Are you there? What happened." Worry took the princess as she feared for the ponies life. And as her "suspicions" had suddenly seemed even more plausible now then before. This is not good. If what I expect is happening, is happening, then those two may be in worse trouble then any of us. I nee- But before she could finish her thought. The flicker re-occurred. Brighter and fiercer than before. Celestia, who has been regenerating magic till now, let out a blast of explosive magic. Hitting the tree and sending chunks of burnt wood flying into the air. The princess watched what was left of the destroyed tree before approaching with caution, readying her magic to prevent any surprises. And, as if on queue, the spark of light exited the remains of tree in a blazing fury. Escaping deeper into the woods. You're not getting away this time. Celestia thought, as she violently flapped her wings, picking up immense speed, and quickly closing in on the speck. Noticing the princess on it's trail. The speck of light stopped as Celestia was within a hundred feet of her, and to her surprise. Grew. First into one, then into two. Making the distinction between bull and dog noticeable. So they wish to fight me. Give up everything in a final showdown. They are lucky i intend no bloodbath. She thought. But that did not stop her from preparing a magical ball, in which she surrounded herself in. Better and strong than before. The beasts, however. Reacted in a way that surprised and baffled the princess. She witnessed something new, something unseen in all her life. The two constellations combined into one, nearly shapeless entity. Oh sweet maker. Was all that came to mind as she felt it's power ooze from it's being. And as if to prove Celestia's fear were well placed. The fusion of Canis, the dog and Taurus, the bull caught the princess inches before her magic connected. It struggled for a few moments before taking completely control of it and throwing Celestia. Trapped in her own magic. Celestia's body was challenged within the ball, as she felt immense pressure begin to destroy her muscles, which strained against the power of the new Constellation's throw. Unwilling to completely give in to gravity. As she traveled, barely able to think, the princess noticed something as she flew in the air. Two new, unidentified beings were now strewn across the Everfree Forest. Looking and feeling just as powerful as her opponent. "What is going on?" She managed. Beginning to rapidly descend towards the ground. END OF CHAPTER 5 > Chapter Six: Discord....Just Discord > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- This chapter will surround Discord's fight with the Ursa Major, and Leo the Lion. The events in this chapter occur at the same time as the last two chapters. Discord joyfully watched the chaos that ensued all throughout Ponyville as he hovered in the air. Everypony pushing and shoving one another, injuries, screaming, riots, a few hopeless attempts by city officials to calm the frightened residents. Truly a spectacle. Even if it was not at his level, he felt the change in status quo was definitely a welcoming site. In fact, he even considered dropping everything to just sit back and watch the chaos spreading all throughout the town. It would be an interesting thing to watch, also giving him reason to eat some of his newly acquired chocolate and peanut covered popcorn, in which was provided by Pinkie Pie, seconds before she left. However, at the thought of who gifted the popcorn entered his mind, and how she would react. He could not, in good conscience, follow through in such activities. Not anymore. "This accursed consciousness I have seem to have acquired in the last year has really put a damper in what I used to consider fun," the Draconequus groaned. "It's like having children." Slightly disappointed, both at his last joke and himself. Discord picked up his pace as he turned his attention to the six hideous figures, standing no less than 500 meters away from the gates of Ponyville's entrance, ready to attack those they sensed could appose them. "Well," he said, preparing for battle. "At least I know I will pass Twilight's friendship lesson...hmm, that's a pretty flawed logic," Discord considered. "In that I pass a friendship test with violence. But whatever, let's get this over with." With a snap of his finger, Discord appeared atop the gates of Ponyville's entrance. From here, he could now see the even more horrific expressions that were shamelessly applied to these six ugly creatures, as he searched each and every one of the figures for his two opponents. Who were a young arrogant brat of a bear, and a lion he has pissed of more than once in the past. Spotting the two, who were both unaware of Discord as they watched in shock at the actions of the Princess of the Night. The Draconequus was just about to make his presence known with a big bang. Literally. But a thought occurred to him, that stopped him in his tracks. Wait Discord. Let's imagine for a second, the reaction upon Twilight's face when she finds out that I, of all peop-I mean ponies, has been able to solve such a catastrophic event with simple words. Yes, yes, making her, the supposed 'expert' of friendship, feel obsolete. The thought truly amused Discord, being the mischievous devil he is. "But wait, what if I happen to not be able to solve this problem with words? It would just be a waste of time." Discord was now truly considering all possibilities. Finding out which method to better annoy Twilight. Then you prove once and for all, that violence is better than friendship, or that friendship is violence. Which ever really. He responded to himself. "Yes, Excellent!" Discord announced, throwing a pointed finger in the air. "I truly am brilliant." And without another seconds thought. Discord snapped a finger and appeared directly behind his opponents, who were still watching the spectacle that was Luna's clash with Aquila. But still, believing himself to be more interesting than that naive little ponies duel, he made his presence known, with something that could not be ignored. Discord snapped his finger again, and an immense mirror showed itself in front of both the Ursa Major and Leo the Lion (thankfully the Constellations had spaced out after Luna shot up into the air to fight one of them). The mirror's sudden appearance made the two jolt into alerted stances. As if they mirror would attack them. Fortunately for them, Discord just wanted them to see him. Which, after a view seconds of staring at the mirror, they finally allowed themselves to star into the mirror and spot Discord. Their reaction to him was even worse. They both spun around and charged at Discord. Who was rather surprised, but reacted by annoyingly snapping his fingers again and returning to the gates of Ponyville. The two constellations, who were only taken aback by his disappearance for a few seconds, began searching for him. "I see that Leo is still just as annoyed with me as he was back then. But that bear, wonder what has him ticked?" Discord quietly mused to himself. Why don't you find out. Didn't little Tia tell you how important information gathering was or whatever. Maybe we could talk to them about it and....come to an agreement. Maybe. Discord's insides shivered at the sappiness his thought process had devolved into. He kinda liked and hated it at the same time. "You're lucky I like challenges almost as much as I like chaos." Discord muttered to himself, who seemed pleased with Discord's compliance. Returning his attention to the two Constellations, they had seemed to have spotted him and had started charging at him. They now were within 30 Discords from Discord. "Damn!" He cursed. "I really have to stop talking to myself." Discord's mind ached as he thought of what to do now. It was one thing to wish for something, but to actually get these two creatures, who wants his head, to calm down would take something big. He smiled as it came to him. "I can go big. I'M DISCORD!" Before him, appeared a 130 ft tall, 20-inch thick, rock wall covered in black magic with immense green text plastered in the middle of the rock stating one simple four letter word: STOP Seeing the text, Leo the Lion stopped. But like the young hot-head this bear seemed more and more to be, the Ursa Major slammed straight into the hulking formation, without a doubt, thinking he could overcome Discord's magic. However, that was definitely not the case, as the bear barely nudged the wall. Excited, and a bit hysterical at the bears stupidity, Discord rid himself of the newly appointed Wall of Chaos, something he plans to use in the future. And was now face to face with a reeling Ursa Major, and an old friend. Who seemed to be annoyed with who he sees before him. "Leoion!" Discord howled, remembering the nickname he gave the Constellation a few millennia ago. "Oh how long it's been, do you miss me as much as I have forgotten you till this day?" Discord said, grinning all the while. Discord. Came the elder voice of the lion, as it entered his mind. What is the Spirit of Chaos doing here? Protecting those that are not yourself, especially ponies, is unheard of. If the beast was confused, his voice did not give it away. His pride prevented all others seeing him as anything other than all-knowing. "Seems you have been ignorant of my state of being in the last millennia." Discord replied, one eye one the lion, the other on the recovered bear. "Well I don't plan on boring you to death. Just know that I hate stone and loneliness. So I decided to branch out. Now I have tons of good friends that occupy my life." Discord heard a low chuckle from the lion, and a growl from the increasingly impatient bear. Which slightly embarrassed the Draconequus, he hadn't considered how odd the words coming out of his mouth were. Well it seems you have changed, although I doubt you would give up a chance to repeat your' past antics on me. Which I do remember still being rightfully pissed about. "You exaggerate that prank," Discord said, raising a finger in defense. "I only painted your' mane the color of Celestia's beautiful mane. Honestly if you ask me, it was an improvement." Hard to take your word for it, being one who enjoys chaos so much, of course it would look bett- In Discord's mind, his attention was cut away from his conversation with Leo the Lion, and what happened next, happened in a matter of one second. Which is only possible because of how advanced Discord's brain was. Discord was ready to quip back at Leo's words. But was cut short as he sensed an immense power gathering over at the heart of the Everfree Forest. The Draconequu's allowed a third eye to appear on his horn, were it could go unnoticed by his opponents. It witnessed Luna misfiring an immense gathering of energy, meant for one of the other Constellations that seemed to have joined her fight. The ball of magic now descended upon the forest, ready to destroy it entirely. Dammit, Luna. Was all he could think while trying to contain a calm face at this new predicament. At this point, half a second passed. But reacting the best he could. He snapped his fingers quietly behind his back, sending the mighty, Discord Poll of Disharmony, to take care of Luna's mishap. At this point, the second was up. You. Leo's voice now returned to Discord, as his attention was now away from the forest, ready for his expected outcome. And it came. In the form of a huge burst of power in the sky, looking similar to a Sonic Rainboom, but with blue and purple, in the process. Of course, the explosion drew the attention of both Constellations before him. Startled and ready to attack. They both looked back to Discord. This time, the bear talked. See. They attack us now, Leo. I gave you time to talk with your' odd friend. But now we must commence with our destruction, and prepare for 'that'. His voice seemed less imposing, and more like a whining young-ling. Your right. A noticeable sigh came from the blue beast (not that it tells you much, they're all blue, save for the Ursa Major), before he replied. Sorry Discord. But, these ponies took something from us. All of us. That must not be ignored. "What did they take then?" He paused. "No. What did we take?" Discord said, making certain that his distinction was heard. He feared that this wasn't going to end with a hug and shouting "friendship is magic", like Twilight might hope if she was here. The constellation looked taken aback by Discords proclamation. I must have really changed if I surprised him of all people. Discord noted, waiting for Leo's response. Everything. Was all he said, recovered from his initial shock. Before another word could be spoken. The beast's pounced. But Discord expected as much. The Draconequus bolted in-between a gap the creatures left, escaping the two's attack. Discord's speed surprised the two for a short moment, before turning towards him. WHAM! As they faced him, the Poll of Disharmony extended and planted itself Diagonally between the two Constellations. It sent the two beast's flying across the Everfree Forest.Using dark magic, the hit was immensely more powerful than it normally would have been. They were now further from the entrance to Ponyville, which put Discord at ease as he quickly closed in on the two, who were now recovered and running towards him. Discord, deciding that the only way to fight them without destroying the forest completely, summoned a miniature version of the, Wall of Chaos, and placed it onto his left eagle claw arm. But Discord was not done. He called forth his, Poll of Chaos to his right lion paw, ready to clash with Leo the Lion and the Ursa Major. And they did. Running past each other as they landed a blow on their opponent. The Ursa Major hitting Discord's left and Leo attempting to hit his right. But, to no effect. The bear had connected with the, Small Wall of Chaos. Which instantly pushed the beast back, with minor damage to it's paw. Leo, on the other hand, was overwhelmed by the surprising amount of magic contained within Discord's poll. Which ended in the lion being thrown to the ground with a severely damaged right paw. Discord, now where the beast's used to be, turned and readied to attack the bear, who took the least amount of damage from the collision. Sensing the Draconequus. The Ursa Major turned around and stood on it's hind-legs. Now being twice the size, and even more taller and heavier than him. It started to fall towards Discord as he closed in. In fact, he was too close to even dodge. So Discord did the only sensible thing he could think of. Suddenly the much bigger, Wall of Chaos, appeared between Discord and the Ursa Major. Catching the bear and staying afloat thanks to the Discord's magic. Clearly not expecting this. The bear roared it's displeasure before being flipped over by the large object, nearly squished by the weight of the weapon. Not dead, but definitely severely hurt. Discord turned his attention to Leo, who was struggling to get up. About to subdue his old friend. Discord made a move to him, but was stopped as he felt his mind being called by something, something familiar. Celestia? He thought, surprised by the sudden signal of the, Princess of the Sun. "I have no time for this. But what does she want?" He said, keeping his eyes on his opponents as he contemplated his latest predicament. Don't worry. Just send me, I can just tell you what I know. Or I could tell myself what I know...Whatever, just send me. Not questioning any sort of logic. He did. Ridding his mind of himself, but that took closing his eyes for a few moments as he sent out apart of himself to Celestia (also creating a small body for it, if needed). After the process concluded, he opened his eyes. No one was there. Leo was gone, and the Ursa Major had somehow gotten away from being under the huge Wall of Chaos. "They're...gone." Discord said, surprised of their departure. Even more so that Leo the Lion, most prideful of all living beings, would dare retreat from battle. It was under-heard of, especially considering how much Discord knew Leo. "Am I jumping to conclusions?" Discord said, still shocked. "Could they be trying to to wait for me to let my guard down. No, no. That is still not like that lion. He prefers to fight head on, it's still too weird to think he would not confront me face to face." Discord began to descend towards the ground. "Hmm. Something is off." Discord said. "Well whatever, I won't find them standing here. I have more of a chance to see them if I explore a bit. So explore I shall," he concluded. He began to walk deeper into the forest, leaving the gates of Ponyville behind. 10 minutes later Discord found out that without the other half of his being, he could not think. Literally. All thoughts could only be expressed if they left his mouth. So for 10 agonizing minutes of searching the forest, all the randomness that was Discord's thought process, came spurting out of his mouth. Driving the Draconequus to near insanity. "I guess it's no surprise that the only contender to my greatness is myself." He said, something he initially didn't want to say out loud. But was beyond his ability to stop. His annoyance, however, halted as he came by a lake. Of course this would not initially catch his attention. But within the body of water, he swore he saw a flicker of light. It was as bright as an illuminated Unicorn horn, and it was underwater. But of course, being so advanced, his eyes saw it. "What could-" that be. He thought...he thought? "You've returned!" Discord said, as he realized his other half returned. "Oh how I missed me. You could not believe what I had to go thr-" He was cut off as information overcame him: Celestia's request. His surprise pity and assuring words at Luna's mistake. The fact his other self could have been back 5 minutes ago but decided to simply explore the lands with the small body Discord provided it. Of course, Discord was pissed off. "You dare allow such torture of my being as you simply waste time!?" He shouted aloud. Annoyed anger filled him. What? I never get to explore anything of my own accord. This was probably the only time ever. So I used it. You could understand, it's like being encased in stone. But worse. He responded to himself. "How is it worse?" Discord said, faltering to his own reasoning against himself. Which lowered his anger. At least when you're stone. You can't see all these wonderful things. Me on the other hand? I have to witness all these things without ever being able to personally interact with it. "You are me!" Anger returning to him. "You experience everything the same way I do. There is no difference, you dumbass!" Discord was too late to realize the stupidity behind his last remark. And he would have called himself out on it, if it wasn't for the flash of light within the lake. What is that? he asked himself. "That, is a nuisance." He replied. "One I plan on confronting." It could be nothing at all. Maybe a flashy fish or something along those lines. Already on his way towards the glimmer of light, Discord tiredly replied. "I doubt it, it's pure light all by itself. There is nothing behind or surrounding it." He paused. "It's them." Before his claim could be challenged. It was confirmed by the sudden growth of the light. A few seconds, it grew into noticeable shapes. A lion, and a bear. "Ah-ha!" He said, pleased by his accuracy. " I don't know what caused you to chicken out Leo. But I have little time and patience to sort it out." He ascended to the air. Moving towards the Constellations. But something caused him to stop. The two figures held their separate forms for only a few moments, before combining into one, solitary entity, without a distinguishable known appearance. "What are they-" Was all he managed before this new being sped towards Discord. At a speed barely traceable by even his eyes. All he could manage before their attack, was the summoning of his, Wall of Chaos. But, to the surprise to him, himself, and even the new beast itself. The stone wall crumbled before their power. Connecting with Discord and sending him higher into the sky. Pain was felt throughout his body as he flew throughout the sky. But pain was instantly dulled as shivers were felt all throughout his being as he witnessed the site of two other locations in the forest. The same process was occurring were the two princesses were fighting their own battles. And for the first time in a while. Discord feared for another's well being. This. Is not good at all. He thought, as he witnessed two figures sent flying into the sky. END OF CHAPTER 6 > Chapter Seven: The Reason > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- This chapter surrounds Starlight and Trixie's venture into the Everfree Forest Takes place at the same time as the last three chapters Trixie was really starting to regret following Starlight into Ponyville, now with everypony running amok as if their heads have been lopped off. But the chaotic state of the town wasn't what brought forth her regret. No. It was something deeper, more personal, as if all old parts of her was warning her of impending doom. Well, Trixie decided to ignore it. She didn't care. The blue pony was content with just going with the flow, if she dared to actually stop and think about her life within the past 3 months, she would quickly find herself in the, House of "Special" Mares and Stallions, barking alongside other occupants of the fine establishment. So yes, she was very content with pushing all thoughts to the back of her mind and catching up with her best friend. "So do we actually have a plan," Trixie said, now caught up with Starlight. "Or did you just run off without one. Well, other than Celestia's 'plan'." Trixie and Starlight had to jump a downed pony before Trixie could get a response. "I have absolutely no clue what to do other than to go into the forest and 'obtain' information." Starlight replied. Trixie noticed her look of uncertainty. "So, does that mean you are trying to come up with something. Something close to a plan." Trixie was trying to hold back her fears and doubts. Not really for her sake, but for Starlight. Trixie feared for the poor mare's ability to cope under pressure while also staying 'the good guy'. Yeah, if Starlight was just as or even worse at being a goodie-two-shoes as Trixie, then she really feared for her and her capacity of niceness. "Oh, I am trying. I am most definitely trying Trixie." Starlight's painful smile was as convincing as Spike was scary. Not a good sign. Trixie thought. Too much pressure is on Starlight. And if I've come to know anything about her after all this time, it is that she works horrible under pressure. So, Trixie decided to do what she is best at, apparently, and that was making others laugh. "Well, whatever you come up with," Trixie paused for dramatic effect. " Know that. I, THE GREAT AND POWERFUL TRIXIE, has your back." Trixie saw as her overly-dramatic nature took effect on her best friend, and she started to giggle in response. Finally, a fun face. Trixie thought in relief. "Thanks, Trix. I appreciate your, uh, assurance." Her smile was sincere and her face relaxed. "Trix? Now your giving the almighty me nicknames?" Trixie said in playful gesturing. "You offend my greatness." "Oh stop. Let's get going. I think I know what to do." Starlight's face was now truly that of a leader. Confident in her abilities, and Trixie felt that she had accomplished something. Maybe everypony was right. I really am needed... Trixie paused in contemplation. Meaning even Twilight was right. Well it's not like I will ever admit it. She shrugged, and followed Starlight as she sped up. It wasn't until their conversation had ended that they started observing their surroundings. And of course, lots and lots of disharmony. Very physical stuff, some were acting very unpony-like. To the point that it seemed more like the worst back ally in the worst part of Manehattan. Although, Trixie was still grateful that no fires had started. But she expected them to start soon. So her reaction as Mayor Mare suddenly trampling over Starlight, as they made way in a mass gathering of fearful ponies, was anything but positive. "Oh, I'm so sorry dear." The mayor hurriedly said as she helped up Starlight. "The town is in chaos, I have tried calming everypony, telling them that we are protected by the princess's, but they seem to not be listening." Fear and panic was clear on her face. "And I have a feeling a few fires may soon start." I knew it. Trixie thought before, Mayor Mare continued. "Please tell me you know what to do. As your position clearly states. This kind of distraught in Ponyville can only be quelled by the Princess of Friendship, which is only possible by leading and protecting us.So please tell me wh-" She paused, noticing how she must have sounded, and began again with tact. "I'm sorry to sound like this way to you dear. But it is now your job to lead us, or at least help me lead them." "I...I can't." Starlight said, lowering her head in guilt. Much to Trixie's dismay, it seemed that her attempts at comforting Starlight eariler were starting to wear off, and initial fear was returning. "I must travel into the forest at the request of, Princess Celestia and find the source of this problem. I'm sorry, you must do all you can to lead everypony." "Celestia?" The mayor asked, more to herself than anypony else. Trixie noticed the mayor begin to withdraw, deep in thought, as if trying to remember something. Which confused the blue mare, as she further noticed, Mayor Mare's absence in using Princess Celestia's title. However, impatient, anxious, and guilty as she was, Starlight did not notice, and grabbed for Trixie to continue toward the forest. Which would take galloping through a large gathering of spooked ponies. But as they went through the madness, Trixie glanced back towards the mayor, but saw that she was gone. Which only lead to the resurfacing of that weird feeling of unease deep down in Trixie's gut. It only took a few minutes to get through the mob of ponies that had originally blocked the entrance into the Everfree Forest. Which would usually take hours. But thanks to some high level magical energy that flew across everypony, through the forest, and rebounded into the sky in a blazing fury, the plaza was instantly emptied as all within ran towards the opposite direction of the forest. Leaving the only two dumbest ponies stupid enough to enter the forest at this time. At least that was how everypony else viewed it. But now, as the two were well within the forest, Starlight in-front, Trixie behind. They were finally able to calm down and gather a plan. "So about that plan." Trixie said, certain that it was okay to talk to Starlight now. "Yeah, there isn't one." Starlight replied hesitantly. "What?" "Well there was one a few minutes ago. You know, to get out of Ponyville unharmed." Starlight's habit of talking faster and faster was kicking in as she started explaining herself to Trixie. "But now, well, I don't have one." "Starlight!" Trixie said, more whiny than angry. "Come on, you can't just get somepony to trust and follow you, just to tell them you know shit about what your doing." "Hey look Trixie." Starlight angrily said. "If you don't like how I run things, you can take over instead." "The thing is that you don't even run things. You're just haphazardly following what Princess Sunbutt told you to do, then you get all pissy and frustrated with everything around you." Trixie felt a selfish side of herself taking over, despite her previous attempts to support Starlight. The blue mare still had a snobbish side to her personality. "Wait." Starlight said, suddenly stopping as if to think about something. "Princess Sunbutt?" "Yeah, that's my name for the princess when I decide to insult her." Trixie said, thankful that Starlight seemed to not have paid attention to Trixie's mean words. "That's it!" She said, after pondering something. "What?" Trixie said, confused. "Princess Sunbutt?" "No." Starlight finally turned towards Trixie. "Before Princess Celestia left, she told me to put up a communication spell that can last long distances." "I think I can remember her saying something along those lines." Trixie can vividly recall the princess talking as the blue mare coward in fear. "Well, before I ran into Ponyville to get here. I put up, Lonteget Maxinant, a spell created by Coppercorn himself. Who is most famous for creating the single most strongest communication spell known to ponykind. It can keep anypony within 1000 miles of each other in touch." Starlight was starting to lose breath as she started going into a book-worm tangent. "So naturally, to be safe, I cast it. Just to be safe." "Your repeating yourself." Trixie said, ignoring most of her add information, and only barely understanding the overall meaning. "Yeah, whatever, are you listening?" Starlight said. "Does it matter if I listen or even get what you're talking about?" Trixie said, still confused. "Ugh, just stand there and wait. I need to concentrate." Starlight's horn began to glow as Trixie backed away. "Coppercorn is known for creating overly-complex spells for absolutely no reason other than to test the user, as if to see if they are worthy of his greatness...or that's what Twilight told me...which she was apparently told by an entry in Starswirl the Bearded's journal of-" "I get it Starlight. Just cast the damn spell." "Right, sorry." The two ponies stood still as Starlight prodded for the spell. Attempting to reinvigorate it. But as time went on. Trixie was less and less faithful of it's appearance any time soon and overall use. However, the faded pink pony still tried, but to little effect other than pulsing veins spread all over her face. "Um, Starlight?" Trixie was worried that her friends would pop a blood vessel if she tried any further. "I think it's time to stop." However, the mare did not listen. In fact, her frustration just grew to an alarming rate. Trixie was about to interject, even if it came to forcing her friend to stop. But before she could move, a loud Ding noise could be heard. Which, Trixie guessed to have meant that Starlight's spell picked up. Going by her reaction to the noise, Trixie was right. However there was no response. "Princess? Princess? Damn, is my spell even up anymore?" Starlight's voice became frantic as her hopes were diminishing. "Maybe it turned off, or you exhausted all your magic. It happens when you keep a spell on for thirty minutes without using it. Kinda just goes away." Trixie offered. "Trixie." Starlight said in annoyance. "Magic doesn't work like that, plus even if it did, thirty minutes would not be en-" But before she could finish, a familiar, regal voice could be heard as if it came from behind the two. "My little ponies?!" "It worked!" Starlight visibly jumped for joy as Trixie was annoyed at her misjudgment. "Princess Celestia. We have entered the forest after much difficulty, but we almost died from some magical orb, and Trixie is increasingly getting more annoying." Starlight paused to hush Trixie's retort before continuing. "I need to know why I am here again? I could be helping you or Princess Luna fight the Constellations instead of...whatever it is I am he-" Ahh, I'm done! Trixie thought as she ignored the rest of Starlight's conversation with, Princess Celestia and turned forward, watching the forest as they traveled deeper and deeper into the center. If she wants to act like this, then the best I can do is just not talk at all. Now she's on her own, and if she revert it's not my fault. But it's not like she is gonna revert into some heartless bitch because of a little pressure. I mean, she did survive that Changeling incident. Yeah, and that that time I betrayed her and to-" The pony remembered the time she hurt Starlight by actively using her to get to Twilight. To one up her rival, she was willing to throw away a friend, a friend she didn't have to try so hard to achieve. Starlight was just somepony that she easily connected with. But I still treated her like crap. Trixie took a deep breath as she calmed herself down. She knew that even though her friend can get a bit tempered, herself especially, they would still be able to work it out. With this in mind, Trixie returned her attention to Starlight, who was now in mid sentence, and much to the blue mare's surprise, was talking about how she creepily stalked Twilight when she used to be evil. Of course, with Trixie being herself, the pony was thoroughly creeped out. Which was plane on her face. "I guess your right," Starlight sighed in defeat. "Wait a minute," interjected Trixie. "Those events are completely different. She seemingly stalked Twilight night and day, she is worse than me when I spied on her. It would make sense for her to have the upper-hand on somepony. But this? This is just waltzing into their home and taking a look. Not much can be learned from just that...I speak from experience." Trixie decided to give her input on the situation. Hoping to make up for ignoring her friend's entire conversation. "That may be true Trixie. But if my suspicions are correct. Just simply searching their residence will be enough to find validation, to them of course, to attack and blame us." The princess lowered her voice. "I may be wrong, but I suspect we were set up." Confused. Starlight tried to get the princess to expose her secret. "What do you mean set up? Who would want to do that, who could do that. This-" Suddenly, a static like noise blasted into the ears of both ponies. The two mares reacted in shock at the suddenness of it, which caused them to stop and consider the source. Both even briefly believed the princess hung up; if that was even possible. "Starlight?" Asked Trixie, worry shown across her face. "This is impossible." Starlight was just as worried, but also perplexed. "Coppercorn made sure that no interference of any kind could possibly break the connection between to ponies." "Maybe it's was a scam spell." Trixie offered. "This spell was tested by Starswirl the Bearded himself." Starlight said in a factual tone. "To accuse the spell of being a scam, is to accuse Starswirl the Bearded a scam artist. Or worse. Somepony who would takes bribes." "Okay. So what other possible reasons could there be, that would lead to such a great and powerful spell as Lonteget Maxinant being 'cut off'?" Trixie said sarcastically as she twirled her hooves. "Well," Starlight took a moment to recall the answer to Trixie's question. "It would take a sizable amount of magical energy being expelled from within the the spells reach. More specifically, a barrier spell. But it is hard to consider something just as powerful as Coppercorns incantation." "How powerful is it?" Trixie was actually curious this time. "It took Starswirl the Bearded 2 whole minutes to master the spell." "That's all?" "It took Twilight 10 hours." "And?" "It took me 19 hours." "So?" "IT WOULD TAKE YOU A MONTH!" Starlight yelled, patience diminished. "Oh," Trixie finally remembered the gap between her and these other Unicorns. "Cool." Starlight sighed. "Let's just find the source of-" "Wait." Trixie's eyes widened with realization to something she hadn't considered till now. "Do we even know where to find the lair of the Constellations, or were we really just that much more unprepared for this little venture into the Everfree Forest than I previously assumed." "Oh, that." Starlight said nonchalantly. "Twilight told me the story of how she beat the Ursa Minor. You would know. And in that story she told me where it lived." Starlight pointed forward. And as the two looked at were she pointed, they were met with surprise. A hooded figure, not 20 meters away, was in the middle of casting a spell. Luckily, the pony-like figure had it's back turned to the Starlight and Trixie. Which allowed them to quickly hide in the nearest bushes once they had realized this. "Who is that?" Trixie asked. Now completely terrified. "Is that the pony who is interfering with our signal?" "I would think so." Starlight stared at the figures hooded head. Trying to make out the pony behind. "Just watch, we may learn more if we quietly stay here." Before Trixie could defy Starlight's plan, they were instantly met with the ponies identity. The pony threw it's hooves into the air as it finished it's incantation. Three small and purple lines of magic exited the pony and flew into the air, dispersing as it reached the highest tree. The hooded pony watched the sky for a few more seconds before beginning to laugh. And much to the two hiding ponies. It, no she. Spoke. "Oh, if it isn't my favorite littlest ponies." The voice instantly threw the two off. They doubted it however, as they thought it was impossible. But were instantly proven wrong as she turned. Revealing Mayor Mare. "I was wondering how long it would take to find this place." Mare's face contorted into a sinister smile as she saw the surprised faces of both Starlight and Trixie. END OF CHAPTER 7 > Chapter 8: The Ursa's Lair > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- This chapter now carries on with the story, following both Starlight and Trixie. "Ms. Mare?" Starlight said, stammering. Shock had set within her, and certainly Trixie too. At first, she was faced with denial, believing what she saw to be a simple trick of some sort. However, she knew it to be stupid to assume such, as there is very little reason for her mind to be playing tricks on her so suddenly, and now of all times. So instead, Starlight had to fathom the fact a regular earth pony, known for being an expendable klutz, was controlling such an amazing amount of magic. "Yes, that is this stupid ponies name, isn't it?" Mayor Mare said, oddly referring to herself as she calmly took a step towards the two ponies. She was close enough to be easily seen, even in the forest's darkness. "You know," she said, stopping and and placing a hoof to her chest. "You wouldn't believe how long it took me to get used to that name while keeping a straight face. I mean, it's so stupid. It's like naming a dog, 'puppy pet'; it makes no sense." Mayor Mare suddenly chuckled. "Wait," Trixie said, confusion plain on her face, which had replaced her initial shock. "Why are you talking like that? Are you okay, Mayor?" "Oh, silly me. I forget that I am the only one aware of my secret." Ms. Mare began to shake her head in disappointment, seemingly with herself. "You're n-not making much sense, Ms. Mare. Do you mind explaining yourself," Starlight offered, fearing where this was going. "A secret, stupid pony names, insulting yourself; you are really starting to worry me." "Am I?" Mayor Mare said, looking genuinely surprised. "With the lukewarm reactions I have been receiving from you, I would assume you thought very little of me; or possibly you were even annoyed and tried your best to ignore me. But of course, it is for that very reason I am using this form, those who are avoided; or ignored, are often the best to copy for what I have in mind." "Wait." Trixie said in horror. "Are you a changeling?!" "Oh god." The seemingly fake mayor slapped her face in frustration. "Think. You and your group of misfits have abolished the changeling colony from what they once were. Plus, I have definitely shown hints of magic, have I not?" The pony started waving frantically. "Just a few moment ago, I cast a spell of immense power. Earlier today, I showed multiple occasions where I demonstrated teleportation magic. I mean, how else would you explain my sudden appearances and disappearances." She pointed a hoof at Starlight. "I am utterly surprised you did not notice such a dead giveaway; for someone so versed in magic, I would expect you to have caught on. In fact, I was scared you may have done so, and that I had gone too far with my games." The fake mayor paused to catch her breath, showing signs of annoyance and anger. The two ponies still watched in horrified confusion, each word that left Mayor Mare's mouth became increasingly more surprising. It was so unlike her, and they could barely comprehend that the being before them wasn't who they knew her to be. Even though it was being constantly confirmed with each sentence she spoke in her rant. "So," Starlight finally said, ready to question the situation before her. "If you are not the mayor we know. Who are you; or what are you?" She perked up at that. "I am a very powerful being who plans on using the six constellations to destroy Ponyville." She stated, rather bluntly. "Of course, that seems to have been halted. So I just cast a very powerful and ancient spell that will help the six on their quest for revenge." She pause, thinking. "Oh, I am also not female and I sport a legendary beard; like I said, this is just an appearance I decided upon to trick the residence of Ponyville so that I could do something without constantly being bothered, which I bet would happen as I apparently used to be famous." The fake Ms. Mare brought a hoof to her chin as if she were trying to remember something. As she finished, silence had befallen the enclosed area of the forest. If the two ponies were struck with surprise before, now their minds were at a breaking point. It was one too many twist for the two to comprehend, let along deem as a reality. While Starlight and Trixie processed this new set of information, the fake Mayor Mare, began to smile as she joyfully watched both of their minds freeze up. However, it was a short lived pleasure as a sudden roar echoed throughout the forest. Which had snapped the two reeling ponies out of their collective daze. "What was that!?" Squealed Starlight and Trixie in unison. "That," Fake Mare said, pointing to the skies. "Would be my spell taking effect." "Your... w-what does it do?" Starlight stammered. "Oh, you will find out soon enough." Fake Mare raised her hoof, pointing at the two ponies. "That is, of course, if you can find a way out of the Lair." Magic began to spill from Fake Mare's hoof, and in a matter of seconds, Starlight could feel her presence begin to be transported elsewhere. Apparently, so did Trixie, who started to screech at the feeling of forced transportation. However, she still had so much to ask this impostor. "Wait." She quickly said. "I still have questions for you. This is all not making sense." "I don't care." Fake Mare bluntly stated. Starlight felt her entire being shift as her surroundings instantaneously changed from dark greenery to an area filled with light blue rocks. However, they were barely visible in this musty and dark place. She felt a moderate amount of pain fill her as this occurred, it wasn't too much, but definitely enough to cry out; just as Trixie did. However, something she noticed allowed her to ignore her own pain. That being the slight voice change of this impostor mayor. As Fake Mare was in the middle of her reply, Starlight heard it's baritone drop drastically. Giving away one big surprise. This mare was a stallion. ----- The two had been in this mysterious place, which Starlight quickly identified as some sort of cave, for 10 whole minutes, exploring the many branching paths. Both were hoping that they would soon find a way out, but Starlight was worried that they were only going deeper into the mystery cave. "So?" Trixe asked, the darkness of the cave almost completely encasing her as the two ponies wondered down a path they were certain was the way out. "He's a stallion." Starlight repeated. Waiting for her expected reaction from Trixie. "Again," Trixie said. "So?" "You don't get it, do you?" Starlight said in annoyance. "Yeah. He's a stallion. Big deal. What does that have to do with the loud sounds, an earth pony casting magic, that very earth pony being an impostor of Ponyville's very on mayor, and the fact we can't use any magic right now?" Trixie said, fighting back Starlight's snark. "Well," Starlight said, taken aback by the logic of Trixie's words. "It minimizes the wide area in which this impostor could be. Before, we thought it was a mare, but there are an immense amount of mare magicians that just knowing one simple fact would never be enough." All this was coming to Starlight as she talked, good thing it sounded logical enough. "But, knowing that he is in fact a stallion, and not a mare, helps us plenty. There aren't many well known, or powerful, stallion wizards." "So who could this mystery wizard be, based on what we know right now?" Trixie asked. "Well, a few who could possibly be stronger than Coppercorn, and are currently living would be..." Starlight paused and shut her eyes shut in concentration. "Quinn Top, Mad Marvel, Sunflare, and..." Starlight hesitated to say his name. "Sunburst." The two stood in awkward silence as Starlight said the final stallions name. However, Trixie quickly asked another question before Starlight could dwell to long on the possibility. "Would any of them actually do it." She asked. "No!" Starlight quickly said. "All these wizards are known to be complete paragons who put others before themselves at all times. Plus, they have all been reported to be in their respective cities at the current moment." "How would you know that?" Trixie asked. "I read the newspaper." Starlight said, questioning whether or not Trixie even has the time to read. "In the latest issue of, Equestria Now, it mentions how they all recently performed an outstanding feat worthy of being the best of the best. I won't go into what it was as it matters very little. But I can assure you that they were all very impressive things." "So they would be to preoccupied doing those things, and it can't be another impostor because these are only feats they can accomplish?" Trixie said. "Exactly." Starlight confirmed. "So that leads us with nothing right now." She sighed. "What about his mention of a beard?" Trixie asked, trying to open up an possible candidates. "All wizards have a beard, Trixie." Starlight knowingly replied. "But he said legendary beard." Trixie was trying her best to help. But her deductions were already well known facts. "All wizards are very prideful of their beards, they all call them legendary; it's a trend started by Starswirl himself." Starlight sounded as if she was prepared for a lecture. "Why is it that you know this before I do. It seems like common enough knowledge." Trixie was embarrassed at her lack of magical knowledge, even though it was her supposed profession. "Well..." Starlight stopped herself before she went off into a unnecessary tangent. "Sorry. But that doesn't matter right now. We can find out who this pony is once we get out of here. Maybe Celestia, or even Discord can provide us with anypony who fits the bill." Starlight paused to let Trixie's disappointment come and go, before resuming. "I will however, answer your previous questions. The loud sounds are obviously the six constellations. Why would they suddenly roar? Well, all I know is that it has to do with our impostor." "Okay," Trixie said, nodding. " I can already assume why our fake pony could use magic even though he seemed to be a earth pony. But why can't we use any magic right now? I mean, I can't even draw in enough of it to provide us with some light." Trixie stopped to demonstrate this. The only thing that her horn could produce was a small spark. "Same reason why we are down here." Starlight confidently replied, turning around to address Trixie. "It must be because of him." "You're wrong, little one." A mysterious and booming voice interjected. At the sound of this new voice. Both Starlight and Trixie quickly shot their attention into the direction they were traveling towards, which seemed to only be more darkness. Surprised and a little scared, both mares stood frozen solid. A small chuckle could be heard before being replaced by alarmingly rough coughs. When done, the mystery voice could be heard again. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to frighten you little ponies." The voice was surprisingly feminine in comparison to it's booming nature. Whatever the origin of this voice was, it was most certainly going to be female. "W-What are you; w-where are you?" Trixie said, surprisingly before Starlight could. "If you continue this path for another 3 minutes. You could find an answer to both those questions." The voice replied. Giving off no sign of joy or impatience. "Don't worry about me possibly eating you. There's little point." The voice had answered a question that would have sparked a conversation between the two, considering their choices and whether or not the voice could be trusted. However, not a hundred percent ready to take the voices word for it, Starlight bravely questioned it. "Why would that be?" The voice gave another small chuckle, causing both ponies to suddenly jerk. "There is little point in eating you both when I am already dead." END OF CHAPTER 8
