My Knight in Shining Armor

Shining Armor sat in the hospital waiting room, while waiting for his dad to come out. About two hours ago, he had picked him up from school, saying that today was the day. The new foal was coming. He was so excited. He now sat with a book on the history of guards ponies, blocking out the world.

His dad appeared from behind a door. "Shining, come here. There's someone I want you to meet." Shining Armor jumped down from his chair, picked up his bag and followed his dad down the hall. They entered a room and he saw his mother sitting upright with a pink bundle in her forelegs. The excited colt ran to his mother and scrambled up into the bed. He looked into the blankets, and saw a lavender unicorn
filly with a tuft of indigo and pink on her head.

"Shining Armor, meet your little sister, Twilight Sparkle."

Right then and there, Shining Armor vowed that he would always look out for her and be everything she ever needed. "Hi Twilight, I'm gonna be the best big brother ever, I'll always be your big brother best friend forever."

Several years later

A twelve year old Twilight Sparkle burst through the front door, crying. Her parents, Nightlight and Twilight Velvet glanced at their crying filly as she ran up the stairs to her room. Her parents cringed as her bedroom door slammed, and went upstairs after her. Nightlight knocked on the door. "Twilight, dear, will you let us in?"

"NO! JUST LEAVE ME ALONE!" The lavender unicorn inside the room started crying again. He was a total jerk. She hated him. That idiot Stargazer. She never wanted to speak to him again.

About a half hour prior

"Hi Stargazer."
"Hey Twilight, 'sup?"
"Oh. Nothing. I was just, um, wondering if you wanted to go to the spring dance together?"
"Um, Twilight, I don't know how to say this, but I'm already going with Moondancer."

"oh"
The lavender unicorn sped home crying after that, embarrassed. See Princess, she thought, this is what happens when I try to reach out to others.

back to the present

Shining Armor walked into the house. Immediately, he noticed a lack of sister. He was sure she would be home by now. He was glad to be home on break from guard squad, and was excited to spend his birthday with his family. He walked into the library.

"Hey mom, dad, where's Twilight?"

"She's in her room. She hasn't left it since she got home from school."

Shining Armor ran upstairs. He knocked on the door. "Twiley, you okay in there? Can I come in?" He heard shuffling and then, she opened the door. Her face was streaked with tears, her mane was a mess, and there was a hole in the wall. "What happened Twi?"

Twilight poured out her heart to her brother, every detail. She looked up to him when she had finished, and he leant down to hug her. "Never mind what the princess said. I am the only pony you'll ever need, and I'll always be there for you."

7 years later

"Hey, Shining?" Twilight said as she walked up to her brother, who was just getting off duty.

"Hey Twiley."

"I need to tell you something. Spike and I are being shipped out to Ponyville tomorrow."

"Yeah, Celestia told me that you guys were supervising for the Summer Sun Celebration."

"Uh-huh. And she wants me to 'make some friends'* while I'm there."

*(Twilight said this in a very mocking tone)

"Maybe you should, it might not be a bad idea."

"But you always said the only pony I would ever need is you!"

"Twilight, you're all grown up now, you need to get out, get away from the dusty old books."

"MAYBE BOOKS ARE ALL I NEED! You don't seem to care either way."

"Twilight, I'm concerned about you. You need to talk to others."

"Just forget that I ever came to you."

"Wait, Twilight, don't leave mad at me! You're right. I'm all you'll ever need."

About 13 years later

Twilight Sparkle sat in front of the mirror as Rarity applied the finishing touch to her mane. She looked the same way as she felt, a princess. This was her special day, and she looked beautiful. There was a knock on the door. "Come in." Twilight answered it.

Shining Armor walked in the room, instantly taken aback by his sister's beauty. Her friend had done a wonderful job. Said ivory unicorn excused herself and exited the room. Twilight smiled and ran to her brother to hug him.

"Are you sure you're ready?" Shining Armor asked.

"Of course. We love each other, and I'm very happy to be marrying Orion. Really, I'll be fine."

"But what if he doesn't love you?"

Twilight chuckled, "Then why did he ask me to marry him?"

"You're right, I just don't want to see you hurt."

"I'll be fine. And I'm positive he's not a changeling."

"About that, how come you're the one with super powers to wipe out villains, but you get the normal wedding?"

Twilight lost it. She couldn't stop laughing. "Who knows? By the way, you were wrong."

"Huh? About what?"

"All those years ago, you said that you were the only pony I would ever need. But you were wrong. And I'm so happy you were."

The brother and sister embraced until Rainbow Dash walked in. "Um, Twi, he's ready."

Twilight took a deep breath. This was it. She glanced up at her brother. Sure, she had a lot of awesome ponies in her life, five awesome friends, and a stallion who loved her waiting at the end of the aisle, but her brother was special. The brother who's special talent was literally protecting the ones he loved. The brother that would listen when she had boy troubles. The brother that never wanted to fight with her. The brother who she would always need. Her very own knight in shining armor.
