> Building a New Family > by Kix > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- > Chapter One; Strengthening Bonds > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ~~~~~Moonshade’s day~~~~~ As AJ helps me get settled into the passenger side of Luna’s dark metallic blue Charger, I watch from the black leather seat as the wheelchair is broken down by Luna and stored in the trunk. Rarity on the other hand is busy with Sunset, making sure the large cooler and backpack are stocked with who knows what. Silently I just sit there and observe what is going on around me. They… they do care about me… about us. Maybe… maybe I can start dreaming about one day having a loving family again. As the doors close, the clock on the dash monitor reads nine thirty in the morning before the time shrinks and switches to map view. With the windows fully lowered, the coordinates set and the radio on we start down the road as a mixture of both fear and anticipation runs through me. Both Rarity and AJ sing along to the current song in unison, not skipping a beat or stumbling over the words. They have some good voices. With a smile I let their voices relax me a little. At least, until Luna speaks up. “Do you sing, Moonshade? I have a feeling you have a beautiful singing voice.” Looking at her I offer a slight smile as my gaze falls to the floor. “No… I… I never saw much reason to when I got old enough. Once things got… bad I… I never found enjoyment in anything. I was just a… shell wanting to die.” “Well then, things are different for you now, Moonshade. Your shell is cracking and inside I can see the beautiful young woman you can become,” With a smile she takes the wheel in one hand while the other arm drapes across the backrest of my seat. “Follow my lead and we may have a few discoveries on this trip.” Clearing her throat she takes a deep breath and begins to sing one of the few songs I can instantly recognize. As she nears the chorus, both AJ and Rarity nod at me with smiles before joining in, encouraging me to do the same. Hesitantly, I start off, trying to keep in time with them as I sing in a whisper. However, half way through the chorus I go back to being silent and just stare at the floor board. I… I can’t… I sound horrible. “Are you alright, Moonshade?” I can feel the eyes of the two older teens focus on me as Luna takes notice of my change of mood. “No, I… I sound horrible. I don’t even know why I even tried.” My previous happy mood quickly flops as I answer in a soft whisper, looking down “Sugarcube, ya can’ be so hard on yerself. This was only yer first try at singin’, correct? Tell ya what, after a couple o’ meetins with mah therapist Ah’d like fer ya join us durin’ one o’ our band practices.” AJ pats my good shoulder as she leans as far forward as her seat belt allows. “Yes darling, Our band will help you learn, if it is something you really wish to do.” Rarity finishes as the car comes to a complete stop in a large parking lot and Luna hangs a handicap placard on the rear view mirror. “So Moon, what animal or animals would you like to see first?” The question comes from Luna as she starts pushing me once everything is unpacked, I’m settled into the wheelchair and sunscreen is applied. AJ takes responsibility for the cooler and bag as she walks easily next to us while Rarity produces a couple of wide brimmed hats, offering one to each of us along with a pair of sunglasses. The calm inducing scenery along with its beauty has a near instantaneous effect and I can feel myself relaxing. If the architects put this much though into the front, I wonder how much thought they put into the rest of this place. Off to my left is a very green lawn with no hint of trash on it, flowers are growing in a large bed along the black fence surrounded by rocks. The line to enter is moving pretty quickly despite how long it is. After we get our tickets we come into a large area with many lockers along the wall behind us. In front of us is a bunch of different trails and I can see the reptile house and butterflyatorium from where we are. “Where do you want to go first Moon?” Luna hands me the map after unfolding it, smiling. “How about we make just one big loop, starting with the bat caves.” Rarity is obviously not pleased with the decision as we start to make our way there. “But… but darling why the… bats first?” At the last two words she shivers in what I guess is either fear or disgust. “Why not? I think they’re a little interesting. I also want to really see the fox exhibit and the Outback experience as well,” Another shiver from Rarity only brings a giggle from both AJ and Luna as we make our way to the first stop. “And Luna, thank you for suggesting this trip. I like it here.” “Applejack, would you and Rarity mind going on ahead of us please. Or you can go off and do your own exploring. We’ll meet here for lunch at noon,” On the map Luna points out a large open spot designated as a picnic area. “You do have each other's phone numbers, correct?” “Sure thing, Luna, an’ yea we have each other's number. C’mon Rares, where ya’ wanna go?” AJ must have noted something in Luna’s words, posture or eyes, something I must have missed. A second bag is produced and draped on the handles of the wheelchair before being filled with water bottles and snacks. “Why did you send them off on their own?” The farmer and fashionista take off excitedly, going in the general direction we are. “Because, we never had a chance before to be alone and get to know each other,” I can hear the smile in her words as she pushes me towards the artificial cave like structure. “And I have wanted to ever since we met in the hospital.” “Well, seems like you already know most of my past, wh---” “The bad part yes, which I want to avoid talking about. I want to get to know who you are here,” A finger pokes against the back of my head playfully as we stop first just in front of the cave entrance. Surrounded by windows are a bunch of trees, not sure what kinds but hanging from the branches are a multitude of different bat species. “And in here” Who am I? I… I don’t even know that, how can she possibly expect me to answer? “Right now I… I don’t even feel like I---” As I twist to try and look at her my eyes fall on the largest bat in the exhibit, it’s fur, at least what I can see is an orangish color though it has a black head. As I look at it I can’t help but feel as if the animal is staring directly at me. “don’t even know who I am.” That last part is spoken slower and with a lot less sadness. “Well, you have a wonderful opportunity to learn. And I’ll be here to help support you when you need it.” I have no idea how long I stare at the large bat but the spell I seem to be under breaks as it flies off. Going through the rest of cave brings me a sense of wonder so powerful I’m afraid to speak, lest it’s broken. Luna just hums softly as she pushes me at a leisurely pace. How many different kinds of bats are there? And what was that bat I just kept staring at? My thoughts are so focused I barely realize the motions of us moving or hear the sounds of rubber on a wooden bridge. Pulling out a granola bar from the bag Luna hands it to me after opening it. “I am curious, how have you been adjusting since moving in with us? Is there something you would like changed?” The question comes out of left field as we stop and look at a sprawling mini marsh, ducks float lazily atop the surface, some going under the wooden bridge we’re on. The trees sway lazily in the light breeze as it caresses the water’s surface, enticing it to ripple in the same lazy motion. Continuing to look out at the small wilderness, I just let the peace it offers flow into me, my breathing slows down as I close my eyes. “At first it was… hard. I… I never wanted to believe that I could find a place or people that would… care for me without asking for something in return. I’m… I’m sorry I was so… grumpy.” “I understand completely sweetie, and I don’t hold it against you. As for asking for something in return, you can say we are, but it is something that will take time. We just want you to be happy and trust us.” Kneeling down to my level she gives me a loose hug. Her hug ends with a slight ruffling of my hair, which I try to swat at her playfully in retaliation. “Think you could… take a picture of this for me please, preferably with me in it?” Handing her my phone Luna turns the chair and quickly takes a picture of me. Looking at it I can only see my face, which is adorned with the biggest smile I’ve seen myself wear in a long time. Behind me is the marsh, a duck is actually in the center of the picture with its bottom raised above the water’s surface. For the rest of our time alone Luna and I just chat. Almost like I do with Lily, or… dare I say it? As if we are… mother and… daughter. After going through a few more exhibits and more pictures taken we begin to head towards the picnic spot. We’re the first ones to reach the designated site. Sitting at a shaded table I look over at the other families and people around us. “Hey Luna, think we could… get a picture taken, just the two of us?” “Of course, once the other two catch up with us. Speaking of which.” As the words leave her mouth, AJ and Rarity show up with large smiles. “How has your day been so far?” “It has been an enjoyable morning so far. We got to see a lot of different animals and even took some pictures. I even have some inspiration for some new designs.” Rarity settles across from me as AJ gets out the containers of food and begins setting them up. “How about you, Moonshade? Have you been enjoying your time with Luna?” “Actually, yeah, I have been. Luna and I had a pretty good time talking and getting to know each other a little. Thank you for inviting her.” “Ya need ta thank Sunset, sugarcube. She suggested it.” AJ helps fill my paper plate up with coleslaw, chips and a six inch tuna sub. The breeze continues to blow around us lazily, shaking the trees a little as pigeons, ducks, geese and even a few peacocks cross the grass, keeping their distance from the humans as we break into more mundane subjects. The talk eventually breaks down to the daily happenings at the high school and what would be needed to get me caught up to the level I should be on. “Hey Rarity, think you could… take a picture for me?” “Of course, darling. Where did you want the picture taken?” Taking the phone from me she looks around a little. “I would suggest those flowers right there.” The flower bed she points out is mostly a mixture of blue and purple blooms of obvious different types. Both of the girls smile as Luna pushes me to the directed flowers and helps me out of the chair, sitting me on the grass before sitting next to me, an arm goes behind my back as she holds herself close to me as Rarity snaps the picture. “They look like they could be mother and daughter, don’t they, Applejack?” Rarity shows off the picture to the blonde, who only nods in agreement as I’m back in the chair and pushed back to the table. Taking the phone I just stop and look at it. She’s… right, but… I can’t be thinking like that. I don’t want to betray my real mom. Once our lunch is packed up we go through the rest of the zoo, saving the Arctic and Outback experiences for last. The Arctic is first and the entrance is a glass tunnel under the sea lion pool. The water is crystal clear as a couple of sea lions swim above us. A couple of photos of the ones swimming right above us are taken, followed by another picture of a sea lion bobbing in the current vertically with his head above the surface. Making our way to the end a couple more sea lions swim next to and above us until we near the other side. The end of the tunnel is frigid, and is soon explained by the large chunk of glacial ice embedded in it. While I can keep track and even participate in the various conversations going on I can’t help but feel as if I’d be betraying mom if I thought of Luna as her replacement. This one pervasive thought persists throughout the rest of the Arctic, at least, until we stop at the fox enclosure. The cute fox stares at me, breaking the negative chain for a little bit as I stare back. Luna, meanwhile snaps a few pictures, including one of him yawning. Smiling we move on, and while Rarity and AJ finds the penguins amusing I don’t. My interest is perked back up as we enter the polar bear den. Watching the polar bear swim and play in the water returns the large smile I wore most of the day back to my lips. Looking up I notice a large television showing what I’m guessing is the room but in thermal view. Is this how polar bears see? This is cool. ***** ***** ***** “Alright folks, this part ah the exhibit is unique. We’re gonna let ya walk through our trail, but be careful o’ the wildlife. Don’ step on the grass an’ if an animal steps onta the trail please don’ touch it. We hope ya have a good experience an’ enjoy yaselves.” The guide must be Australian to have that good of an accent. The inner door opens and the guide leads us onto the pathway. Already we can see a few kangaroos on the grass close by and some dingos in a glass pen. Rocks painted in Native Australian styles decorate the pen as well. Halfway through the tour a kangaroo hops between Rarity and AJ, causing the fashionista to let out a surprised squeal, which the rest of us laugh at. After a few more pictures in the Outback we make our way back to the entrance, but stop quickly at the gift store. I can’t see what Luna is doing but it’s clear she is making a purchase, a rather large one, along with both Rarity and AJ. Once we’re all back in the car with everything packed up Luna turns to me, smiling as she produces a life size replica of the bat we saw and wraps its flexible wings around the strap of my arm sling. “Did you enjoy yourself today, Moon?” As we pull out of the parking lot my gaze never leaves the stuffed animal as I begin to pet it. Even though my inner thoughts are still focused on what Rarity said during lunch a little I still smile. “I did, very much. Thank you, Luna.” ~~~~~Lily’s Day~~~~~ “Okay kiddo, close your eyes and don’t open them until I say so.” Nodding, I follow Chrys’ command, smiling a bit as she places a hand on my shoulder and begins directing me out the door. Even though I’m still upset from yesterday the idea of spending most of the day with the woman pushes those thoughts away, leaving me to anticipate what she has planned. “So Lily, I know you don’t want to talk about it. But what happened yesterday that they ended up talking about forgiving your folks?” The growl of the vehicle’s engine along with the height leads me to think she is driving some kind of pickup. “Applejack, she… she was able to get Moonshade to… talk about her family. Moon seemed… happier when you guys dropped me off,” I can feel my throat tighten as I think back on yesterday. Though just being around Chrysalis helps bolster my resolve. “They… they said that I have to...forgive them if I wanted to… find true peace.” A hand snakes around my shoulders, giving me a caring shake. “Well, I’m not the one who you need to talk about forgiveness. You’ll have to pull Luna and Celestia aside and talk to them. What I can say is this. If I had the choice between happiness and carrying around that kind of hate and pain, I’d really have a heart to heart with myself and ask, is holding onto that negative worth losing out on the positive that can happen?” She gives me another shake before squeezing the shoulder. She maybe right, but… I don’t think I can do it right now. The vehicle comes to a stop and soon Chrys grabs me under my armpits and with an oomph she pulls me out and sets me on the cement. The movement must have had the desired effect because she just ruffles my hair as I laugh. Walking through the door she guides me with a hand in the middle of my back. I can sorta guess we are in a store, but what kind I have no idea as Chrysalis leaves me near the entrance for a little bit. Eventually she returns and guides me a couple more feet. “Okay kiddo, open your eyes.” I can hear her smile as my right eye cracks open just enough to catch a glimpse of what is standing in front of me. Once my eyes open wide enough, I find myself staring directly at a dirt bike. For a long time I just stare at it, speechless. The bike is white with the handles and seat being a light pink with my trademark lily on the sides of the gas tank. “Is this… is this really… mine?” “One hundred percent, kiddo, happy birthday. Go ahead and remove that piece of tape just above your mark,” I can’t even remember the last time I felt so… happy. Under the removed tape is my name in pink, stylized letters. “Oh, and there is more. Take a look in the box.” My eagerness to get to the contents causes the onyx-skinned woman to laugh as I just tear it apart. Inside the remains of the box is a motocross outfit, complete with chest piece, gloves, boots and helmet with a pair of goggle's. The suit is mostly light pink with stripes of white and even a light red that matches my hair. The chest piece is white with a light red lining while the gloves, boots and helmet match the coloration of the suit. A big, pink lily adorns the center of the chest plate. “I… I can’t… what… why would you do this for me?” “Because kiddo, I care about you and I know how much you have enjoyed riding my bike. So why not get you one of your own?” Speechless I just jump and wrap my arms tight around Chrys’ neck. “This is just part one of the day I have in mind for us. Let’s get this thing loaded up in the truck.” “What… what is with the other bike? What do you have planned?” As my new bike is wheeled out the door with the key in my pocket I notice for the first time the black, crew cab Ram with a teal stripe along the side and back. In the bed is a larger dirt bike with a teal gas tank and teal sides decorated by black, claw like marks going down from the top. As my bike is wheeled up the ramp Chrys smiles down at me and begins securing it with cargo straps. “Well, was gonna take you out and let you have your first ride with your bike. There’s an ATV place with multiple trails and stuff that is open to the public. I can teach you how to ride properly while we have fun.” “Thank you, thank you, thank you sooo much Chrys, I love it!” My arms encircle her waist as I tightly hold on to her for a little bit before she breaks out. “No time for that mushy mushy stuff, kiddo. Get in.” Eagerly I hop into the passenger side. This is gonna be so cool! I can’t wait to get on that bike. The drive feels like it lasts for ever as my anticipation builds at an alarming rate till I’m basically bouncing in my seat. “Calm down kiddo, or you’re gonna go flying out the door.” As she warns me I can hear the laughter she is desperately trying to hold back. Eventually, when I feel as if I can’t wait any longer, we pull into a dirt parking lot and already there are a few people starting to unload dirt bikes, quads and other types of ATVs. Among them is Rainbow Dash who is semi dressed in her riding gear and her bike is already on the ground. “Rainbow Dash, hey!” I didn’t know she was into dirt bikes, this is gonna be even sweeter. The rainbow-haired girl looks up and returns the wave eagerly as she runs up to the truck as Chrys parks and I eagerly try to hop out, only to get a little entangled in the seat belt I’m still wearing. “Hey Lily, when did you get your own bike?” “Just today, Chrys bought it for me along with proper protective gear. I had no idea you enjoyed riding dirt bikes.” “Of course I do, nothing beats the feeling of speed and the roar of a bike’s engine. They’re awesome, just like me.” Chrys just lets us talk as she begins to unload her own bike, smiling while laughing to herself. Once she is clear Rainbow Dash and I get up and start unhooking my own bike before bringing it down to the ground. Once the bikes are propped, Chrys and I suit up as Rainbow goes back to her own bike and finishes as well. “Alright kiddo, before I can teach you the basics we need to get you a sticker. Then we’ll spend some time in the flats to let you get used to the bike and give you some tips.” Rainbow joins us as we walk our bikes to the gatehouse. “Excited, Lily?” With the newly purchased sticker properly placed on my bike, the other two have their own stickers scrutinized before we are allowed inside, though a small pendant flag is attached to the right rear panel of our bikes. “You bet I am, though Chrys is gonna have me stay out here in the flats for a bit.” The words are shouted over the distant roar of the other ATVs here. “Okay, let’s get you started. Insert your key here and turn it, then straddle the bike. Now, you see that lever by your left foot? Stomp down on it, hard, while twisting your throttle, which is your right handlebar,” Following her directions it takes me a couple tries to get it started as she pumps something on the right side of the engine. But once the engine starts, I can’t even begin to describe the feelings of power vibrating through me and into my very bones. “This is your primer, if the engine doesn’t start after two tries you need to press it a few times,” She points out the rubber disc near the top, and she even has me press on it twice. A thick nylon string is then attached to my chest plate that leads to a rubber cap. “This is your safety cutoff. If this rubber piece is ever yanked off for whatever reason it’ll kill the engine immediately,” As she speaks she also demonstrates by giving the cord a sharp tug. “All you’ll need to do to get it started again is straighten up the bike, reattach the rubber cap and maybe prime it a little.” Seems simple enough, I don’t see how hard it could be riding this thing. The bike is started easily enough and with a flick of my right foot I lift the kickstand, now balancing the bike on my own. “Your bike has an automatic transmission, so you won’t have to worry about learning how to shift. It’s mostly like riding a bike, when you go to turn, lean in that direction. When going over bumps or going up or down hills, stand up. In the case of hills, either lean forward or backward, whichever is called for. Now, go and have a few laps or whatever you want to do, but stay in this area where I can watch you. If you want to, you can go off on your own Rainbow. I’m sure we’ll catch up at some point.” “Naw, I wanna watch this.” She just smiles as she rests against her own bike. “Hey Chrys, think you could… record this for me please?” Nervously I hand over my new phone when I unlock it for her. “Sure thing, kiddo. Now get out there, daylight is wasting.” Without any other encouragement I kick the bike out of neutral, which Chrys showed me how, and tear away from them. Probably faster than what she intended, which results in the bike wobbling badly as I fight to keep it steady. Oh shit… SHIT! After a couple of feet the bike’s wobbling increases to the point to where it falls onto it’s side while spinning, trapping my leg under its weight. My leg instantly goes numb as both Chrys and Rainbow rush towards me, picking both the bike and myself up. “You alright, Lily?” With an embarrassed smile I just nod, causing Rainbow to burst into laughter. Glaring at her, Chrys scolds me about taking off as fast as I did and helps me get started again. Once again I take off, but this time at a slower speed, and find how much easier it is to control the bike. As I go around the pit, riding across the small bumps or making random turns and other maneuvers, my confidence grows rapidly as I slowly increase the speed over time. The rumble of not just the bike but the effects of the terrain just… no words can describe what I’m feeling right now or how… happy and free I currently feel. After some time Chrys flags me down and I can tell she’s laughing at how dirty I must be looking right now. “How’s your gas level looking?” Opening the cap after unlocking it I can’t believe I rarely wasted what looks like a quarter tank, though I could be mistaken. “Alright kiddo, we’ll get you topped off and then we’ll head on out onto the trails for an hour or two, then we’ll have lunch. Rainbow, I know you like going fast, but if you’re gonna ride with us, then you’re gonna have to slow down some, understand?” “Yeah, I got it Chrysalis.” As I wait for Chrys to return with the gas can I take a look on the left side of my bike. I notice that despite the layers of dirt, the paint and even the lily and my name are still in tact, though covered in dirt. The left leg of my suit is also free of scrapes and cuts, though covered in dirt as well. With the tanks topped off and the gas tank returned to the truck we start our engines and take off, Chrys is riding behind me as Rainbow leads us down trails of her choice. The ride throughout the trails is something I can’t wait to experience again as we pull into the entrance pit and out the gate, heading back to the truck. “Hey Lily, I gotta admit, I wasn’t here by accident. Sunset sorta… told me to be here and wait for you two.” As Rainbow sits next to me in the truck bed, Chrys begins to pull lettuce, sliced tomatoes, bacon, mayonnaise and bread out of one of the two coolers before setting up a small, portable grill. “Why? Why did she want you to be here with us?” Please don’t tell me… I trusted you, Sunset. Well, sorta. Don’t tell me you told her about what happened. Absent-mindedly I stare over the side, away from the blue-skinned girl, watching the thick grove of trees, their branches swaying in the lazy breeze. “Well, she didn’t tell me the full story, just that you needed help understanding how to forgive being betrayed by someone close to you,” Soon the scent of frying bacon floats in the dust filled air as the other riders still out there kick up huge dust clouds. Rainbow’s next words are whispered in a threatening manner. “If you tell ANYONE what I’m about to tell you than you’ll regret it. It won’t do to have my awesomeness tainted by this if it becomes public knowledge.” Her change in demeanor shocks me as I look over at Chrys, who is busy tending to the bacon strips. Fearfully I nod in understanding, which seems to relax her some. “I wasn’t always this awesome girl you now see before you. My mom, she was… abusive, to both me and dad. My dad he… when I was born he was disappointed I wasn’t born a boy, which he wanted. He always wanted a boy that he could talk sports to, take to games and even cheer on to victory.” Chrysalis gives us our space, as if she knew this was going to happen, though it doesn’t seem to affect Rainbow as she continues. “His apparent disappointment in me and my desire to stay as far from mom as long as I could led to me wanting to excel in sports. I don’t know why but dad… put up with mom’s abuse and cheating till I turned nine, and he had a wake up call.” “What… what happened?” I almost don’t ask and as soon as the words leave my mouth I regret asking. “Mom was… disciplining me for something, I forget what. But she was beating me pretty bad, to the point dad had to take me to the hospital. Mom ended up getting arrested for child abuse and dad he… he almost lost custody of me. It took us a few years but we eventually talked and resolved our problems. Things between us have gotten a lot better.” With a smile Rainbow jumps off the back of the truck and I follow, thinking over what she just told me as we begin to eat our lunch. Is… if she can forgive that kind of betrayal, can I do it as well? After lunch we spend a few more hours riding the trails, the jostling of the bike just so happens to shake away my current worries and the excitement keeps it at bay. With the bikes returned to the truck’s bed and secured, we say our goodbyes to Rainbow. “Did you have fun out there, kiddo?” Chrys’ question comes as she starts the truck up and looks over at me. “Yea, I did. Thank you, Chrysalis. Though I do have one question. When can we do it again?” > Chapter Two; Possibility- Luna > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ~~~~~later that afternoon~~~~~ “So Lulu, how did your day with Moonshade go?” Chrys is sprawled across my bed in the basement, or as Tia and Sunset call it, my “nerd cave”. “It went very good, surprisingly. Spent the day at the zoo, along with Applejack and Rarity. Once she opens up, Moonshade is a real sweet kid. I think she’ll get along with Fluttershy as well, if her interest in animals can be nurtured. Here’s a picture Rarity took of the two of us,” I hand her the phone after scrolling to the picture of the two of us together before falling onto the rocking massage chair. “X-Box on. How was your day with Lily? Did she enjoy her gift?” The large, flat screen tv starts up, nearly blinding us in the near darkness as I throw on my headset. “Are you really going to do that? I can’t--- yes I can believe it, it is your worst addiction,” Getting out of the large bed adorned with my signature crescent moon on the headrest, she makes her way to me, clad in only a pair of panties and a tank top. “As for how it went with Lily, she enjoyed it, alot. Once she got used to it she is a natural biker, I may even get her to start competing in motocross. What kind of surprise gift do you have for Moonshade, now that she opened up?” Giggling at the tickle of her breath against the back of my neck, I squirm away from her while trying to select my favorite game. “Stop it, Chrys. Can’t you see I’m trying to do something important? And as for her gift, since gaming supplies is out I might get her the entire Daring Do collection, the special box set that is getting ready to be released and includes a mail order for a free replica of her outfit. And I might get her a pet as well ooh… don’t… mmm… stop it.” Chrys’ hands on the sides of my belly find just the right spot, causing me to jump a little. “Come to bed with me.” The words are whispered right next to my ear as her traveling hands ruck up my shirt some, exposing my belly to the cool air as her moist lips lightly press against the flesh of my neck and kisses the spot before her tongue runs softly along the moistened spot. “You know all the right ways to manipulate me, don’t you?” I try to sound angry but the words come out breathy as I oblige her, our bodies pressing hard into each other as my lips find themselves attached to hers. My eyes flutter closed as I lose myself in the kiss, our lips locked tightly together as my tongue asks for entrance by running along her full, tasty lips. Eagerly her mouth opens just enough and my tongue slips inside, running gently along the edge of her teeth before she traps and sucks on the pink muscle. Moans escape from our throats, followed by a surprised squeal as she falls onto the bed and drags me with her, her arms locked tight around my upper back, fiddling with the clasp of my bra. “Umm… I’ll… I’ll just… let you two be and… maybe come back later.” Looking at the stairs I can feel an embarrassed flush color my face as I notice Sunset just staring at us, slightly shocked with a matching flush to her own cheeks. Looking down at Chrys, she just grins while laying down on the soft comforter with a design made to resemble the moonscape. What does she--- what the hell! She can’t be serious, not with Sunset watching. Her hands travel to my backside and gives it a squeeze, only increasing the embarrassment for the both of us before she wiggles out from under me. “Sorry Lulu, but I couldn’t resist. What can we do for you, bacon hair?” “Well, umm… mom is… she’s heading out on her date with Discord, so you two are... in charge.” I can see how uncomfortable she is as she turns her head away from us and uses a hand to shield us from view. “Also, I know mom said she doesn’t want you corrupting her with your… ‘gaming witchcraft’, but Moon wants to come down and spend some more time with you, Luna.” “Alright, let us get dressed and we’ll figure out how to get her down here safely.” As my niece rushes back up the stairs I turn and focus the most evil glare at Chrys I can muster. “What the hell is wrong with you? What if that was Moon or Lily that came down the stairs? I know you like having our fun time, but if we are going to be serious with adopting them we cannot do stuff like that. We have to remember the messed up shit they went through.” As I throw on something comfortable yet providing a bit more covering she answers while following my lead. “Sorry for forgetting, we’ll have to keep ourselves in check with those two. But as for your reaction and Sunset’s, you shoulda seen your face, priceless.” Growling I toss a pillow right at her face as she laughs at my frown. Once dressed in something somewhat presentable we head upstairs and find the pair engaging in what looks like a good conversation with Applejack and Rarity, Sunset is nowhere to be seen. “Hey sweetie, you wanted to hang out?” “Hey kiddo, go get your stuff packed I promised you a sleepover at my place, didn’t I?” Chrys grabs Lily by her shoulders as she stands behind the teen, who just beams before jumping up and rushing into her room. “Of course I want to, you kidding me?” Something about our trip to the zoo and seeing her smile brings back something from my… dark past, which is a period I’d wish never happened. I can’t figure out what it is exactly, though. I’ll have to ask Tia, she remembers more of that time than I do. For a minute I contemplated on trying to get her downstairs, but the thought is quickly nixed due to the complexity of getting her up and down the stairs and the visage of an angry Tia. So I wheel her to my room. With a laugh I notice that she falls right to sleep as soon as she is helped onto the bed. I just stand there for a bit, watching her. Who in their right mind would ever want to hurt such a good kid? Letting out a sigh I join her, being careful to not hit her still damaged arm and leg as I wrap an arm protectively around her. ***** ***** ***** “Hey Tia, can I… talk you for a bit?” The next morning I wake up and try not to disturb Moonshade as I get out of bed, heading straight to my older sister’s room. “What’s wrong, Lulu? Been having those flashbacks again?” She guides me to the edge of her bed and sits down next to me. “No, a… a new one. It… I was… drunk, like I used to be. It must have been… four years after the accident. A pair of officers and a woman came and… took something away from me.” Looking at Tia I can’t hold back the tears from falling. “Do you… I…” Taking a few deep breaths my chaotic thoughts, brought on by sleeping in the same bed as Moonshade, start to become more organized. “Did I have a… daughter during my… bad times? I… I can’t… remember.” The expelled sigh from her chest and the way she is holding me is a close enough answer, but I want to hear her say it as I just hold her tight. “Yes, you did have a daughter. And yes, she would be around Moon’s age by now.” I… could it be… possible? Will she… how will she react if she finds out? My thoughts are cut off as Celestia continues. “If you want to be sure, than you’ll have to talk to Posey and get a blood test. If it turns out she is, promise me that you will tell her, immediately, and damned be the consequences. And by the way, she has an appointment today to she her doctor, and I can’t take her due to a meeting with the president.” “But… but what if… how can I… I don’t… I’m afraid… I’m afraid she’ll… she’ll hate me.” “So? If you don’t tell her, just think of how worse it’ll be if you don’t tell her and she finds out.” My tear filled gaze lifts up to meet her own eyes. Damnit, why does she have to be right? “Alright, I… I promise.” I can hear the girls starting to get up and get ready for the day. “What time is her appointment?” “It’s at ten, so you don’t have to come in until after you take her back home. Who is staying here for the week with them?” “Rarity is, I’ll go get Moonshade ready.” I close the door silently behind me, my mind a jumbled mess at the implications. ‘I HATE YOU!’ Moon’s voice echoes throughout my mind as I just stand on the other side of Tia’s door. I… I’m sorry, I--- ‘I DON’T CARE! I DON’T WANT TO SEE YOU EV---’ “Morning, Luna. Are you… are you ok?” The thoughts are dispersed as I look to my right, directly at Moonshade, who is smiling while being pushed to the bathroom by Rarity, followed by Lily. “Yes I am l, sweetie. Just a lot on my mind. You better hurry and get ready, you have an appointment with the doctor at ten.” Please, if it is true… don’t hate me for what happened, Moon. I was a… different and horrible person back then. ***** ***** ***** “Luna, are you sure you’re alright? You seem... distracted. Is it… something I did or… said?” Yet again I’m snapped out of my darkening thoughts by her question as we make our way to the hospital. I offer her a fake smile while placing my arm around her shoulders. “I’m good, just… I’m a little worried about this appointment and getting you prepared for the next semester. How are you holding up?” “I’m… I’m scared. What if… what if in my stupidity I… I caused too much damage and… my injuries will never heal?” Her words are laced in doubt, fear and anger, the same feelings running through my mind as well. “We will deal with that IF it comes down to it, but I don’t think it will.” Posey is waiting for us as I pull up to the unloading spot and helps Moonshade into the waiting wheelchair before I go and find a parking spot. Please Faust, please let her injuries fully heal. And please… if she is my daughter… please help us get through it. “Hey Luna, Moonshade was just telling me about the trip you guys went on this Sunday. Sounds like it was fun and positive.” Posey’s smile as I approach just screams how proud and happy she is to see the turnaround in Moon’s attitude. “Yes it was, though I cannot take all the credit. It all goes to Applejack, she was the one who helped open her up, I just took advantage of the opening.” As we stop in the waiting area for Moon’s appointment, Posey pulls me aside. “Let’s go to my office. I want to make sense of this weird message you sent me.” Silently I follow her after explaining to Moonshade where I’m going, though I feel bad I had to lie to her. “Ok Luna, what is going on?” “Well, you… you know a bit of my… past don’t you?” Her answer is a nod while signaling for me to continue. “Well… it… it happened before you became a social worker but, could you… look into something for me?” “If I legally can, what is wrong?” “I… during my… dark times I had a… daughter who was taken away from me. Could you… could you maybe try to see what happened to her?” “Sure, what brought this up?” She is gazing at me curiously from across the desk, stopping whatever she was doing on her computer. “Something Rarity said yesterday after taking this picture.” I hold the phone up for her, displaying the picture of both myself and Moonshade sitting in front of a bed of flowers. “My daughter would be around Moon’s age by now.” “Ah, and you think that Moonshade could be your actual daughter? I can ask the doctor to run a blood test if you really want to know. This will change things, a lot of things for Moonshade, Lily, Chrysalis and yourself. Are you prepared to talk to her about this and deal with the fallout?” “No, I don’t… I don’t think I’ll ever be ready for it, but I know I need to, for the both of us.” “Alright, I’ll go talk to the doctor and see if he can send a nurse or someone to draw your blood.” Posey leaves me in her office, alone with my thoughts. I try to keep them positive, imagining the two of us bonding as a real mother and daughter duo should. However, those thoughts are broken up by my fears, of hearing I hate you! In Moon’s goice over and over and over again. “Alright Luna, roll your sleeve up.” Posey’s return breaks the cycle that has brought me to tears, and she is followed by a young woman, probably a nursing assistant. The vial of drawn blood is stoppered and labeled before being placed right next to one marked as Moon’s blood. I… I have no idea how I want this to go. “Seems like Moon’s evaluation is finished as well. Once you get bandaged up we’ll go and see what the outlook for her is.” Sitting in the small office I can’t help but sit the teen in question on my lap, holding her close as Posey stands next to the doctor. “Well, I have some good news. Moonshade is definitely improving, though she is still around twenty pounds underweight. Her shoulder and ankle are healing properly and she should be able to go through physical therapy in three months. As for her mineral and vitamin levels, we’ll have to wait for the lab. As for her bones, they are still to thin for her age, I’ll have to look into some possible treatments for that. As for any damage that she suffered from her abuse, it seems to be healing as well. Overall, I’ll say she is doing good.” The doctor smiles while grabbing a jar full of suckers and holds it out to her. “I normally reserve these for my smaller patients, but I figured you can be an exception.” The both of us are all smiles as we make our way back to the parking lot, despite my attempts to work up the courage to have the big talk with her. The sooner I get this done with, the sooner we can get this worked out, hopefully. As we drive off I take a couple back roads until we find ourself in the parking lot that overlooks the river. “Moon, there’s… I need to tell you something.” “What’s wrong, Luna? Is… are things going alright with your attempt to be certified to be able to adopt me?” The nervous tone and worried look in her eyes just makes this a lot harder for me. I have to do this. “First off, you need to know that I… I was a.. different person fourteen years ago. I was a drunk who just wanted to kill herself. This… this caused me to have my… my newborn daughter removed.” I can see the gears clicking at my words, her stare is a mix of shock and hurt. “There.. there is a chance I could be---” “You… you could be…I’m… I could be... I’m your… daughter?” > Chapter Three; Doctor's Visit- Moonshade > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- "Moon, it’s time for us ta go. ya’ve been sulkin’ an’ unhappy since ya got back from yer appointment monday. What’s been eatin’ ya?” AJ sits down next to me on my bed. She can’t even come close to understanding how I'm feeling. I don’t even know how I’m feeling. Why… how could this… happen? Reluctantly I let myself get dressed by Applejack as I refuse to answer or even look at her before we make our way to the waiting vehicle. I can guess the run down, rusty red truck is hers, but surprisingly we make our way to Lu… her Mustang. “Is she… is she… coming with us?” “Yea, Celestia had some kind o’ meetin’ with the school board an’ Chrysalis had somethin’ she had ta do.” A flicker of concern crosses her emerald gaze at the question and my tone of voice, obviously wondering what she has to do with my sudden change of personality. “What happened between the two o’ ya?” “Nothing, just… just dr---” The sight of the woman herself approaching the vehicle causes me to go silent while I turn as far as I can to face the window. “Hello there, Applejack. Good afternoon, Moonshade.” She tries to make her greeting sound cheerful while opening the door and getting inside. The cowgirl returns the greeting, a little confused at my refusal to acknowledge her greeting. I can feel both of their worried gazes as I just stare out the window, ignoring both the acquaintance sitting behind me and her, in the driver’s seat. The silence surrounding us during the drive is almost deathly and only serves to increase the tension filling the small space. Looking out the window various scenes play before my unfocused eyes, all of them regarding my possibly… no my REAL family. I don’t care if she is my blood mother, she threw me away. You guys… you guys were… strike that, ARE still my real parents. She decided to throw me away, so why should I accept her now? Should I… should I even try? Why… why now do I… why does this have to happen now, on top of all this… this… shit I’m already going through? As the images continue to play against the window the images of mom… my real mom, are replaced by her. As I continue to watch, an old, familiar feeling begins to grow deep down in my stomach. Pain radiates from the knuckles and wrist of my once good arm as it finds itself smashing into the window. The path of pain increases significantly, and not just from my newly injured hand, but from my bad shoulder and ankle as well due to the abrupt jerk following the rapid declaration of the vehicle. Stars explode in my vision from the pain before it goes white. I can tell the farm hand and her are asking questions, but I’m unable to make out their words. “What’s goin’ on with ya Moon? Ya’ve been actin’ strange fer a few days now. are ya alright?” She is obviously concerned as she leans between the front seat and the door and takes my right arm gently, probably to examine it for any serious damage. Even after her concerned question and look I still refuse to answer, causing the others to sigh as they wait for me to answer. “Nothing, let’s just… let’s just go. I’ll talk to the shrink about this, but ONLY him.” I finally huff out, mostly to myself as I continue to avoid the gaze of the other two. The rest of the drive is again taken in silence, a very uncomfortable, stifling silence that the hick and the other occupant try to break, without success. Even after we park I refuse to talk as I’m pushed towards the single story building. The blonde farmer leads us down a few hallways to a reception area, where she engages in some kind of conversation, though it’s one I don’t care to follow. I vaguely notice that the receptionist also tries to engage me in the same conversation, but I only just pretend to be more interested in the slate grey carpet that’s been trampled by countless feet. The rest of the room is furnished by couches and lounge chairs in the similar grey as the carpet. The tables are covered in a multitude of magazines while toys for little kids are gathered in the far corner, some abandoned and others being used. Potted flowers rest atop a few of the tables and the window sills as a couple, I guess supposed to be cheery, posters line the walls. My thoughts are interrupted as the farmer pushes me next to a pair of empty seats closest to the hall opposite the door. Again she tries to engage me in some kind of conversation while taking another look at my hand, which is throbbing in pain, and only increases as she moves it around. I barely keep my anger in check as all I want to do is lash out, curse and scream, mostly at her, who is sitting behind me, which was the closest available seat. The cycle of thoughts from earlier return, but this time only playing in my mind’s eye and interrupted by new thoughts. A couple of times I can’t help but what it would feel like letting my anger out on her, mostly in different, physical ways. Sometimes she is left bruised and battered and others she is laying in a heap, surrounded by a pool of blood. These images, for some reason only serve to inflame my rising anger. Right in the middle of one of the more… disturbing thoughts I’m snapped back to reality by the unexpected jerk of the wheelchair. In front of me the hick is talking with a significantly older man with white hair streaked with grey. “Hello there, Moonshade, I’m doctor Sunshine. Applejack has told me a bit about you, but only the basics, so I’d like to spend most of the time working with you, if you’ll let me.” She pushes me into a room that is surprisingly larger than I’d expect, unlike the waiting room the carpet in here is colorful and looks well cared for. The walls are painted a gentle, light yellow covered with pictures of various people and his license. The desk is made from a warm looking, dark wood along with the shelves. The chairs, more like recliners, are an off white looking color. Just like the waiting room, there is a shelf full of various toys neatly placed. “H… hey doctor.” I don’t really want to talk, but something about him makes it hard not to talk as I gingerly take his offered hand. The doctor is wearing a pair of blue jeans and a nice looking, jean style button down shirt. His skin is a faded yellow and his wrinkle covered eyes still convey a sense of warmth and caring, along with his smile and body posture. “I… I guess we can.” “Alright, but first would you like to lay down instead? And there is a refrigerator in case you get thirsty full of pops, juice and water.” “Yea, I’d like to lay down, sitting in this is starting to hurt.” AJ helps get me transferred to the offered couch and takes the chair next to me as the doctor pulls his roller chair out from behind the table. “Alright Moonshade, before we start I have to let you know about the rules. One; anything discussed in here stays here unless you, or your guardian allows me to or if I feel you are serious about committing harm to yourself or another person. Two; if you want to talk one-on-one, we can. Or if you want someone here to help you, they can attend as well. Three; you lead the discussions. If there is a particular topic you want to get off your chest feel free to talk about it, unless there is something I think is more pressing. And finally four; there is no cellphone use while you are here. You see that door? You will be required to turn your phone and any other device off and put it in that sheet. Do you understand these rules?” “Yea, I do,” Once I answer AJ takes my phone along with hers and puts them in separate sleeves on the door sheet. “What… where should I… start?” “Wherever you want to. But I can tell there is some tension between you and your guardian, so why don’t we start there?” As I nod, her and AJ start to make their way to the door, but she is stopped by the doctor. “Luna, I think it best if you stay here and listen to this. It could help resolve this problem before it gets too bad.” “If you think is for the better, she hasn’t spoken to me, or anyone really, in a few days.” As she sits down in the chair next to me I can’t help but glare and snarl a bit at her, which makes her cringe and sigh a little. “Now Moonshade, what happened to cause you to be angry with her?” At his gentle prompting, the dam breaks, and all the anger that has been building inside me bursts forth, making me incapable to speak as I think back first to the conversation we had, then the hell my life has turned into. “You want to know why I hate… her? Fine! She… she could be the reason why I… why I… why my life has been a living nightmare! I thought I escaped the horrors of my past but then she… she gave me a curveball from out of nowhere! She said she could be my actual... mother but had to… give me up! HOW… HOW COULD YOU… DO THAT, HUH BITCH? HOW COULD YOU JUST LET YOUR OWN CHILD BE TAKEN AWAY AND NEVER BOTHER TO FIGHT FOR THEM OR EVEN CHECK UP THEM? ON ME? IF I AM YOURS, I HOPE YOU ARE HAPPY, KNOWING ALL THE… SHIT AND HELL I HAD TO DEAL WITH IS ALL… YOUR... FAULT!” As I finish screaming I am panting in a mixture of anger and exertion, my throat feeling dry as I glare daggers at the form of the woman next to me, who is visibly shaking. The doctor just writes down a few notes calmly while observing us, but not interfering as he motions for her to respond. Weakly, and with her head hanging she just seems to deflate before looking up at me, her sad, tear filled eyes locking onto my own. “I know there is nothing I can say or do that can make up for what you went through, Moonshade, specially if I am your biological mother. The best I can do is explain what happened and hope that some day you can forgive me. I’m not looking to jump into a mother-daughter relationship, but I felt that you needed to know the truth, and it would be best coming from me. I-” “You want something else as well, what is it? Do you… do you want me to forget all about the family that first tried to raise me and claim you? Why should I?” “No, I don’t want that, and I only wanted to let you know the possible truth. I am glad that you found a caring family to take you in, and it breaks my heart to even think about what happened to them, and you.” Her head falls as if her neck muscles are no longer able to support it, and I can feel a bit of my anger drain some as I just look at her. “You’re right. Nothing you can do or say will ever be enough to make up for those horrors I went through. I don’t even think I’ll ever be able to forgive you, knowing it was ultimately YOUR fault. I only have one question, why? Why would you give your child… me up so easily and not fight to get them back?” “I was a… very different person back then, Moonshade, you first need to understand that. I was a drunk, a drug addict back then. After… after I… drove drunk one night and… and hit my sister, Celestia, killing her baby and ruining her chance to ever have a baby I just… lost it. I delved even deeper into drugs and alcohol and four years after the accident I… I found myself accidentally pregnant. Despite what I did to her, Celestia still took me in and helped get my life together. For the nine months I was carrying she kept me drug and alcohol free, but I could see that my growing belly only hurt her, reminding her of what she lost, all thanks to me. Once I gave birth and was released from the hospital I… I took my newborn baby and… ran, ashamed for what I put her through and quickly got myself back into my old, destructive life. It took her two weeks to find me.” With a sad smile she just looks at the doctor. “Can I… can I use the bathroom please.” “Of course, Applejack will show you where it is, and where the refrigerator is. Get yourself a water or something to drink, and something for Moonshade as well.” As she gets up and walks out the door he turns to me once the door is closed, his words soft and comforting as he notices the tears starting to well in my eyes. “What happened in your past that hurt you so bad?” I just look at him for a short amount of time and the waterworks finally switch fully on as I begin to speak. “My… my parents… my real parents… died while I was… young and I was… placed in foster care.” Even though I have only told AJ this, it doesn’t seem to get any easier as sobs and sniffing breakup the shortened version of my story. The shame causes me to sit up while bringing my good leg up to my chest, which is hugged by my still throbbing arm while my forehead is buried against the knee, my face hidden by my dark blue mess of hair. “I was… I was abused by the… two, families that took me in. They… they beat me, they… belittled me and they even… they… they RAPED ME!” The doctor just looks on as I sit there, crying, feeling ashamed and dirty as flashbacks come to the front of my mind. I have no idea how long it takes but my eyes feel puffy, store and are stinging painfully as my nose feels like a waterfall of snot as my sniffling peters down, my throat feels like sandpaper as I try to swallow, but can’t produce any saliva. A couple tissues are handed to me, which I take with a small nod and wipe off what mucus hasn’t dried yet. At this point I finally realize that Luna has returned, handing me a bottle of water as the doctor speaks. “Moonshade, it hurts me to hear that something so bad happened to such a sweet girl, and I know you want to blame your suffering on someone other than yourself. But you need to blame those families, not yourself for something you could not stop or control. I do think you are a brave girl, for wanting to talk about this tragedy, to many children are afraid to speak up when they are abused or neglected. I want to see you again next week, same time and day, alright? I do have to unfortunately cut your time short, since I do need to follow up with Applejack as well.” As he gets up and beckons AJ into the room, he lets us stay in here as they get as far from us as they can, which means they are sitting at his desk. Even with my thirst somewhat quenched by the now half empty bottle I can’t seem to get my sniffling or the few random tears under control. “Are you… are you okay, Moonshade?” Startled by Luna’s question I just nod a little while keeping my forehead against my raised knee. It takes me some time to find my voice again, and I can’t hide the.... emptiness in my words. “Like I said, if… I don’t know… I don’t think I could… forgive you if you are my real mom.” “I understand, Moon. Even if my sister has forgiven me for what I have done to her and I have forgiven myself for that event, I don’t… I don’t think I will ever be able to… forgive myself for giving up my own child either, no matter if you are her or are not.” A hand is tentatively placed on my knee, causing me to look up at her, her frown matching my own as tears start to make their appearance in her own eyes. “I did get a blood test requested, so we will know for sure in a few weeks. But no matter how it turns out, I hope you believe me when I say I truly want to help you, if you want it.” Her opposite arm wraps lightly around my shoulders as I stay slumped, unable to look at her any more, though her gesture does seem to anchor the whirlwind of sadness and negativity in my mind. “I… I appreciate it, Luna, and thank you. I’m… I’m sorry I… I---” “Shh, I understand. I shouldn’t have brought it up like I did, not without thinking how it would affect you. How about we put this behind us and try to start all over, okay?” > Chapter Four; Doctor's Visit- Lily > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- I still can’t believe she actually invited me to her office. I just wish it’d be more… exciting than… this. For the umptenth time I restart the game of solitaire, growing a bit more frustrated as I’ve lost now twenty times, even with cheating. The excitement of coming here of a few hours ago has quickly worn off as she kept me busy with mostly basic shit, like filing, though she did sweeten the deal with the promise of Chinese for lunch. With the few tasks long completed and Chrys locked in her office I can feel the boredom start to really take hold, unable to fight it any more I fold my arms on the desk after shoving the keyboard aside to use as a makeshift pillow. “ATTENTION!” The shout startles me awake, causing me to tilt the chair dangerously backwards in alarm, till I find myself on my back, looking up at the ceiling. “You should know that is a bad habit to get into, brat. Could cost you a job if you get too used to it.” Sheepishly I look at the speaker with a blush after rolling backwards some more and coming to my feet. Even if I’m looking at the floor I immediately recognize the man by his voice and his nickname for me. “Hey Mr. Fire, how are you?” Even if I just met him earlier today I don’t think I will ever forget his voice. Like earlier, he is dressed in suburban camouflage tactical pants, combat boots, a black, long sleeve shirt with the shoulders and sleeves also in the same suburban camouflage and a pair of patches adorn the sleeves as black gloves cover his hands. Over the shirt he has a tactical vest filled with a flashlight, knife, ammo pouch and other assorted gear. His red and orange hair is cut in a crew style while a radio microphone protrudes from his right ear. His blue eyes while serious looking hint at a friendly and fun loving personality. “I’m doing alright, is Chrys in her office?” His question is followed by a playful musing of my hair. “By the way, you may want to get your forehead looked at, that big red boil looks nasty.” “Yes she is, and even if my forehead is bruised, I still look a million times better than you ever could.” With a laugh he walks by and towards her office, giving me another quick mussing before opening the door and stepping inside. Curiously I walk up to the closed door, trying to be as quiet as I can as I place a paper cup against the wood, eavesdropping on the conversation. My gut telling me somehow it involves my parents. “... goes further than we thought, though we have been able to keep them from doing much.” “How far does it go?” The conversation is slightly jumbled but I can tell who is speaking as Chrys’ question sounds more amused than concerned. “So far, we linked the group to a number of politicians, from city level all the way to federal, and even members living in three other countries.” As I hear the report I can feel myself starting to get sick. That… that many people could have… they possibly seen… that? “Alright, what about our other operations going on?” “Well, we were able to ensure forty arrests right now, among them are the brat’s parents. We are also compiling evidence to get another twelve arrested, to include a few congressmen. In regards to the other op, we have been able to obtain a significant portion of money from those that have been arrested and found a total of eight victims, including the brat and her friend. We have secret accounts set up for them, to which they will have access to once they hit eighteen.” “Good. Now Lily, I know you are listening, you might as well come in.” Crap, how could I have forgotten about the security camera, I hope she won’t be too mad. Reluctantly I step in through the door, head hanging as Fire directs me to stand in front of Chrys’ desk. “How much did you hear?” “I… I heard almost all of it. I’m… I didn’t mean to, honest! I was just… curious! I… I wanted to---” “I am a little disappointed, but I’m not mad. However, you cannot tell anyone what you have just heard.” “I won’t, I promise. But could I… could I maybe… watch or even testify against my parents?” “Maybe, I’ll have to talk to Posey about it, first.” Despite her reassurances I still can’t help but feel as if I’m in major trouble, though with Fire taking me out for some ice cream relieved some of my worries. At Least, until I saw Chrysalis’ apparently upset walk and body language, the sense of dread in my stomach even bigger as she refused to acknowledge me before we sped off to go home. *****later that day***** “How was your time with Chrys, Lily?” Celestia walks in with a large smile, followed by her sister and Moonshade. The elder sister is smiling brightly, but both Luna and Moonshade don’t look… angry, but their smiles seem… forced. Atleast Moon is smiling, that’s a plus. I jump up from the sofa, pausing the show I’m watching to help her with her bags. “Yea, though I don’t think I’m going into her line of work, ever.” The backpacks I take are brand new, with one being a pink and white mix while the other is a dark blue. “What are these for?” “Well, you and Moonshade need to test to ensure you are at the proper level of education to get enrolled in Canterlot High. Starting tomorrow you two will be expected to study, so you will be getting up nice and early.” As Moonshade just grumbles I can’t help but snicker at her dislike of being up earlier than noon. *****the next morning***** “Moonshade, darling, you simply must get up. Your breakfast is going to be cold. You also have to work on your test.” As I get out of the bathroom the sight of Rarity trying to gently rock the sleeping mass that is Moon to consciousness as she struggles to stay asleep is kind of funny. “Here Rarity, let me give it a try, I know just the trick.” I step next to the fashionesta, still in her own pjs, with a silent giggle. With a wink I lightly crawl into Moon’s bed, causing it to sink a little under my weight and I settle in front of her, my lips close to her left ear as the crater I create causes her to shift even closer. If she wakes up now, I can’t imagine how badly she’ll freak out. “Daring Do needs your help, Moonshade. She is stuck in the Kitchen of Endless chores, forced to slave away for all of eternity.” “Daring.... help… must… free from… Endless… slave.” Her twitching and mumbled words cause Rarity to giggle, which I silence with a glare before continuing. “Help me, Moonshade, you’re my only hope. Help me, Moonshade. Moonshade, I need your help! MOON, PLEASE… HELP ME!” I start of the pleading in a whisper, growing in volume till I shout as loud as I can, causing her to jump and start, nearly rolling off the bed if it wasn’t for Rarity After both myself and Rarity get our laughing under control and Moon finishes tearing into us, we get ready for the day as normal, with the addition of Celestia leaving us a stack of booklets and a list of homework to be finished before she gets home. Despite her tiredness and complaining, I can’t believe how fast Moon goes through her stack, at some points not even bothering to use a scrap piece of paper or a calculator to do the math part. How can she… get this so easily? Specially with her being mostly asleep? It doesn’t make sense. I’m fully awake and Rarity has to help me understand most of this, sometimes explaining it multiple times, it isn’t fair. “How are you doing, darling?” The purple haired girl’s question startles me out of my thoughts and I just look at her, releasing a frustrated sigh. “No. How… how can she find this so… easy? She’s more than half asleep but yet she’s… she is going through this with no problems. How does she do it?” “I honestly do not know the answer to that, darling. She sort of reminds me of my friends, Twilight and of course Sunset, who are very smart. They too can blow through that stack of booklets in a short amount of time.” Growling at her lack of any real explanation I turn back to the problem at hand, the same one I’ve been stuck on for who knows how long. As the day wears on to noon, Moon grumbles something about early birds and stupid sunshine or something while Rarity and I fix up a nice looking breakfast, which I find sort of annoying with how perfect the plates have to look, which Rarity defends adamantly. I don’t really understand it, it’s gonna be eaten either way. With Moonshade now more awake than this morning, and with it being more ladylike, as Rarity says, I finally get through the remaining books, with Moon’s help. The next couple days are a repeat of wake up, eat breakfast, do homework, eat lunch, get the homework turned in and graded, hang out a little with Rainbow, Rarity or Moonshade, eat dinner and sleep. However, a week from when we started getting into our new routine it is broken up by a surprise appointment with some doctor, that apparently Moonshade met already. Am I… do I really want to… talk to him? I know the others are pushing me to, but do I want to? Am I ready to? The few days spent away from her seems to have lightened her mood as Chrys wraps me in a tight hug and kisses my forehead before I shut the helmet’s mask and get on behind her. Despite how many times I’ve ridden her bike I can’t help but marvel at the power and rumble between my legs, the vibrations shaking my very core as we tear off and towards the office. Still in our riding gear, helmets in hand we walk inside, the coldness of the waiting room’s carpet and walls clash with the brightness of the flowers and posters. The receptionist is in a cheery mood as I step in front of the window, a bright smile decorating her young features. “Hello there, how may I help you today?” “I have an appointment with Doctor Sunshine, the name is Lily Bloom.” “Just in time. Nice to finally meet you, Lily.” An older man stands in the hallway, looking almost like he could be related to Applejack, judging by his western style of dress. As I get closer he smiles widely with an outstretched hand, which I take nervously. “How are you doing today?” “I’m doing alright I guess, nervous though.” As he leads me down towards his office I turn, looking at Chrysalis, who is standing in the main room, giving me an encouraging smile and wave. Once the door closes, I can feel my anxiety starting to peek, my heart thumping faster and harder as old memories come crashing to the fore. Sweat starts to bead along my forehead, neck and cheeks as I stand near the door, my only hope to escape. “Relax Lily, you’re safe here, breathe.” Encouraged by his words and following his example I mimic his motions and breathing techniques, finding that it is indeed calming down my hyperactive mind. Though I still stay by the door as he sits behind the large desk, trying to get as far from me as he could while pulling out a pad of paper. “Now, from my understanding you are friends with Moonshade and Applejack, correct? Did they go over the rules with you?” “Yes, they did. Anything that is said here stays in this, unless you feel I am going to be a danger to myself or others. If I want I can have someone present with me if it will help calm me down. I can choose what I want to talk about, unless there is something you think is of importance. Finally my cell phone and any other device I have on me is to be turned off and placed on the sheet of the door.” As I get to the last part I dig into the breast pocket of my jacket and turn off my phone before it slides into a sleeve. “Correct, and thank you. I know it can get a bit hot in here, there is a coat hanger if you wish to remove your leathers.” As he chuckles I look at him curiously, but keep the familiar suit on. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to laugh. I just can’t remember any of my other patients coming in wearing biker leathers. Anyway, whenever you are ready, go ahead and start with whatever you think is relevant and are comfortable talking about.” The toe of my left boot digs into the carpet as I look down, my left arm wrapped tight across my chest as my hand grabs my right arm’s biceps. “Is it… is it… am I a horrible person for… hating my parents, or myself?” “Why don’t we start with you. Why do you hate yourself?” As he looks in my general direction I watch him through my eyelashes as he starts making a few notes. “I just… I feel so… weak and… helpless. I have days where… no matter how long of a shower I take I feel… dirty and I even… it feels as if… sometimes I think that.... Chrysalis doesn’t really want me around, that noone really wants me around.” As I start to talk my back presses against the door and I slide down until I’m sitting, my knees bent as my chest is buried against them. My arms are loosely wrapped around my shins as I continue. “I feel as if… as if… as if I can never be loved anymore.” “What happened to make you feel all of that negativity?” He stops writing his notes and looks at me, cautiously getting up and plucking a stuffed animal off a shelf before he approaches. The bear is lain gently atop my knees before he returns to his desk and out of instinct I pull in for a tight hug, my focus now on it than him as the pain caused by my parents comes flooding out with force. “I… I… how could… why would… why did my parents... hurt me so much? Why couldn’t they… why didn’t they love me? They… they said they… that they love me, but why… why did they put me through so much… hell?” The questions are asked in a whisper, broken up by jerking sobs and sniffs as tears spill onto the comforting bear’s fur. “That is the million dollar question, I guess. And one we may never have a definitive answer for. I can understand how being betrayed by one, or both parents can lead you to feeling unlovable and unwanted. However,” At that word I just look up at him through red rimmed eyes with tears still spilling from the bottom. “I know that there is a family out there who wants to love you, unconditionally. They want to give you the life you deserve and make you happy.” Is that… I know I enjoy being with Chrysalis, but… it seems as if she… why has there been so many times she has seemed to ignore me or… gotten angry with me for no real reason? I doubt she really wants me, she is only doing this to please Luna. “And how do you know?” The words are whispered as I look from him back to the bear, giving it another tight squeeze. “I’ve watched you and that woman as you two pulled into the parking lot. I saw how you two interacted with each other and how easily you got along. I continued to observe you as you both entered the waiting room and as I led you to my office.” Once again he approaches, this time sitting down next to me with a smile that is meant to offer comfort. “I know building a new relationship is hard, and is even harder when you come out of an abusive home like you did. For things to get better you need to talk to her, and not just about random stuff or chit chat, but about the important stuff. Stuff that is really bothering you, no matter what it is. Yes mistakes will be made, but that doesn't mean she cares any less about you.” “Are you… are you sure it will work?” “Unfortunately I can’t give a one hundred percent guarantee, but I have a suspicion it will work with a high degree of success.” “Thank you, I’ll… I’ll give it a try.” As the session draws to a close he schedules me for an appointment for next week, apparently wanting to see both me and Moonshade at the same time. In a surprise move he actually lets me take the teddy bear with me as he escorts me back to the waiting room, where I’m greeted by Chrys and a waiting embrace. After some words exchanged between the two we head on out the building and somehow I feel… lighter and… hopeful. “Come one, come all, experience the biggest fright of your life. This Halloween you are in for a treat. The Fall Circus invites you for a day of fun, tricks and of course, treats.” As we exit the building a pair of older looking teens are standing outside the mall right across from us. They look as if they could be brothers, maybe even twins by how similar they look and dress, though one boy has bright orange skin and deep blue hair while the other’s skin is a darker orange and his hair looks almost like Sunset’s, minus the yellow streaks. Both boys are wearing black cargo shorts and plain black t-shirts. They look lean but very athletic, as if they trained to be more agile and dexterous than strong. Alongside them are a trio of younger kids, younger looking than the crusaders, who are putting up what looks to be posters. One of the two boys has chocolate colored skin with flat, silverish hair wearing blue jean overalls and a white shirt. The other boy has messy, brown hair and lime green skin wearing jean shorts and a red t- shirt. The third member is a girl wearing an outfit that sorta reminds me of a magician’s in a light blue color. Her blue hair is combed neatly and she has light green skin. “Shall we go see what they are advertising?” Her curiosity must be peaked, just like mine is as we walk over, one arm around my new bear while the other is wrapped around her waist. The way her arm is draped across my shoulders just feels… right. “What do you think, Lily, want to check it out? And do you think Moonshade would be interested?” > Chapter Five; Unfortunate Turn of Events- Chrysalis > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- “I don’t know, why don’t you ask her when we get home? And if you want to, you can go over and talk to them a little.” “Thank you, Chrys.” A pair of pink arms wrap around my waist before she starts to head off, stopping after a few steps as she realizes that she is still holding her new teddy bear. I can’t help but laugh as she looks around sheepishly, a tinge of red coloring her cheeks in embarrassment as she hands me the stuffed animal before hurrying over. As I just watch her my line of view is suddenly cut off by a shiny, black, truck style Hummer with chrome trim, brush guards and rims. The windows are darkly tinted and as the driver’s side is rolled down the first thing I notice is the driver. He is light grey with pure white hair, his grey eyes are sharp and something about them reminds me of a predator searching for prey. The black suit he is wearing looks extremely expensive and was tailored to fit him like a glove. “Hello there ma’am, I am sorry to disturb you, but I am wondering, have you have seen this girl around?” His words snap me out of my thoughts, mostly that this guys is not trustworthy. As he speaks he hands me a picture of Moonshade. I knew you guys would be coming around, I wonder why it took you so long to get here, though. “No sir, I have not. Has she run away?” I easily keep my features neutral as I pretend to look at the picture. Even though it is only a head shot, something about it makes me think that it was taken during one of the countless tortures she has suffered. Her face is full of horror and tears, if you look hard enough, can be seen forming in her eyes. “Yes ma’am, she has. Her foster family has been worried sick and are fearful for her safety.” Good lie, they aren’t scared for her, they are scared what would happen if she tells someone about what they’ve done to her. “Please, if you see her or even hear rumors about her, can you give me a call? Also, if you ever find yourself in need of a lawyer don’t hesitate to call me first. I will admit my rates can be, exuberant, but I’m sure we can work something out.” The way his gaze runs over me makes me feel dirty, and as he makes his suggestion for an alternate form of payment I already imagine myself going through some various torture techniques on him. “Know what, have you eaten already? I have not been able to and would be honored to have the company of a lovely young woman to show me where the best place to dine is.” I can’t help but cringe at the thought, though I make it look as if it was a regular shiver. “No thanks, I already have a girlfriend.” And I know she’d be more than happy to join me in torturing you. However I do take his offered business card as he frowns at my confession. “To bad. If things don’t work out, don’t hesitate to call.” Just as he is about to leave, Lily walks up to me with a smile and gives me a tight hug, which causes him to raise an eyebrow in shock. Shit, not good. Why couldn’t you stay over there a bit longer, Lily? Despite how hard he tries to hide it, I can tell he instantly recognized Lily, though doesn’t act on it. “Hey Chrys, that circus looks so fun. I can’t wait to go check it---” Breaking away from me she finally realizes that I am talking to someone inside the vehicle. Looking at her I can tell she also knows exactly who I am talking to. However, before she can say something I turn her around while secretly telling her to be quiet. “I will let you know if I see her. I am sorry, but I have to get going. Take care.” Not really. Just need to get out of here, fast. As we walk away I turn and make a mental note of the vehicle’s license plate. Hopefully it will lead to something of interest. “Take care ma’am. And I must say, that is a lovely daughter you have.” His last words send a shiver up my back as I try to get us away from him and into the nearest restaurant. I can tell how close she is to breaking after that brief encounter, so I gently wedge her bear between her tightly wrapped arms and give her a light hug. “Go get us a table, kiddo. I need to make a few calls.” The entire way to the seat and even after she sits down her gaze never breaks from me, following my slightest move as I pull out my phone. “Slicer, I need you to run a plate, and tell your brothers and at least two others I need them here, now, in two separate vehicles.” “Where are you Ma’am, and what is the plate number?” “I’m at the strip mall on Cervine Street, specifically the coney island. Once they get close, have them call me. As for the plate, it’s 1NN0C3NT, text me what you find out.” “Yes Ma’am, will have that for you in an hour or so.” Once the call is ended I send a group text to Luna, Celestia and Posey. ‘Someone needs to check on Moonshade now group meeting in 1hr @ Celestia’s house in the basement will explain then’ With the first call done and the text sent I debate on if I should make one other call or not, finally I decide to make it, just to be sure. “Hey, Shining Armor I---” “What are you doing, calling me right now, Chrysalis? This better be important.” His words are laced with anger and I can hear the roar of his vehicle’s engine in the background. “I’ll make this quick then, you remember that runaway girl you accidentally injured? Well I think one of her abusers have sent someone to find her, I’d appreciate it if you can make some drive- bys at Celestia’s house. Thank you.” Before he responds, or before I let him, I hang up, knowing he won’t ignore the request. “Hey kiddo, feeling ok?” Sitting at the table across from Lily, I can tell how upset she is, and I can guess what thoughts are going through her mind. “Hey, earth to goofball, you’re about to wreck your bike.” That got her attention alright. As she jerks in a little bit of surprise she just looks at me, her gaze heavily filled with fear. “N… no. I’m… I’m scared. Why… why did he… you won’t let him take me, will you?” “I promise kiddo, I got a plan to take care of them, trust me. Now order anything you want.” As we go over the menu my phone goes off, the distinctive tone for one of my operatives. “I’ll be right back, gotta take this. Where are you?” I walk to the door, staying in site of Lily the whole way as I answer. “We’re five minutes away, Ma’am. What do you have for us?” “Fire, I have someone here who is looking for Moonshade and recognized Lily. He is in a black and chrome Hummer. I need you to cover us as we leave, block his line of sight until we are clear, or distract him. Then I want you guys to follow him, see where he goes and let me know.” “Yes Ma’am, how is Lily doing?” I can tell how concerned he is for her, even if they met a couple days ago. That might not be a bad idea, having Fire watch over the house or act as their body guard. “Scared, very scared right now. She was able to recognize the guy as well. While he is being distracted I am going to have Lily stowed in your vehicle, take her straight home and keep her out of sight, I’ll catch up to you later.” Once I rejoin Lily our food arrives, though it takes some urging to get her to eat. “Hey Lily, I know you are upset, but I need you to listen to me and do exactly what I tell you to. I know you can do it.” Her only response is a slow nod as she chews. “We can’t stay here long, but I have backup. They’re gonna cause a distraction and once they signal you with a wave I want you to run as fast as you can to the other vehicle and keep your head down for the entire drive. Fire is going to be the one driving, and he’ll take you straight to Celestia’s, I’ll be there shortly.” “Are you… you promise that he will not follow me?” I can tell she’s scared, but she tries to hide it, though she does shiver some. “I promise, we’ll keep you and Moonshade safe. Now hurry up and finish eating, we got about ten minutes. When we get done I’ll treat you to all the Chinese you can eat.” Nodding, she finishes in what seems like a record time, causing me to laugh. Before we leave I make another call, this one a conference between myself and the two drivers.”Alright guys, we are about to leave and he is watching us. Stalker, any ideas on how to create the best distraction?” “Yes Ma’am, gonna ram into the driver’s side. Seeing how he is parked, it won’t be hard to get him in trouble, and if you stay here for a bit adding on a stalking charge wouldn’t hurt either.” “We’ll sneak right up to the curb after you start an argument and get him to face away from us.” “Alright boys, sounds like a plan. Remind me to give you guys a raise once we finish all of this.” With the phone turned off and back in my pocket I turn to Lily. “Ok kiddo, get ready to run, you can do this.” As soon as I finish talking the unmistakable sound of metal smashing into metal echos throughout the area, causing the diners to jump and stare. As soon as Mr. Creepy has his attention turned from us Fire pulls up, the rear driver side door flying open. As promised, Lily rushes to the vehicle and actually slides into the waiting vehicle. Once she is buckled and hidden Fire pulls away casually. Before I exit I request to see the manager of this establishment, spinning a tale about how this guy is a stalker and is my abusive ex, asking them if he comes around asking about us not to tell him. Once they promise not to say anything I head out into the parking lot, which is becoming crowded with onlookers and a couple police vehicles. “Officer, officer, I… I saw the whole thing. I can’t be sure but… I think he was watching me.” The question and answer session with the officers lasts for a little longer than I figured, but I think that they have enough to arrest him for the night. I just hope that holds him for a while so we can really get something on him. In relief I make my way back to Celestia’s, taking an alternate route, using way too many turns and double backs while keeping an eye out for anyone tailing me for too long. As I pull up, the vehicle Fire is driving is parked across the street and only occupied by his passenger, who is keeping a wary eye out. A quick check of my phone shows that the requested info from Slicer has not yet appeared. A quick nod is all the acknowledgement I give before I shut the engine off and storm inside. “Hey Chrys, is everything alright?” Sunset’s concerned question is not answered as I hastily make my way to the basement, my face contorted in a grimace. I can tell she is debating on following me, and as I head down the stairs I finally notice that both Lily and Moonshade are missing from the living room. “Hey Celestia, Posey, thank you for meeting me so quickly---” I figured the two girls most affected by this recent turn of events will be in the back room, not down here, along with Fire. I don’t even know how they got Moon down the stairs. “Why are they here?” Good going, idiot. they don’t need to be upset anymore than they are. They need to be helped. Lily’s and Moon’s cringing at my words brings me to smack my forehead mentally as I take a seat next to Lily and wrap her in a hug. Even Fire raises his eyebrows at my words while frowning. “Sorry Lily, Moonshade, this new development… it stressed me out, a lot. The whole ride here I could not help but think of all the possible negative outcomes of what could have happened with me not here.” Nervously she returns the hug, but she quickly buries her tear filled face into my shoulder while I can tell that Moonshade is ready to kill someone, despite her earlier cringing. “Alright Chrysalis, now that you are here, finally, what is going on? We got somewhat of an idea from Lily and your man here.” Posey is keeping her calm as she just stands by the near wall, resting against it a little. Celestia is fidgeting a little, her fingers drumming against the biceps of her folded arms while trying to keep her calm. Luna, meanwhile is pacing angrily off to the side, her arms shaking every few minutes as if she wants to punch something repeatedly. “Well, I don’t know exactly how far their list of friends go, but it seems that Lily’s parents have some very important people backing them. They sent someone here to look for Moonshade, but he caught a glimpse of Lily before I could stop it. I have someone looking into our new guest, I should have his information soon. Though right now he is in the custody of the police.” My opening words doesn’t calm Luna at all, in fact it only serves to anger her even more and I can only guess at what is going on in her head. Posey, however takes my attention away from Luna. “I have been keeping tabs on what is going on with Lily’s parents, and it seems they are in jail, waiting for their trial. So who do you think is down here looking for her, and why?” “Does it matter why? My daugh… Moonshade and Lily are in danger. What are we going to do about it!” Luna is nearly shouting as she stops and turns to face us, her eyes nearly consumed by her rising anger. “We could move them out of the city. I know our family can help hide them until this blows over.” Celestia’s idea is just blurted out, but doesn’t sound all that bad to me. Before I can even judge Luna’s or Posey's reaction, Moonshade’s boiling anger finally makes itself known. “NO, YOU PROMISED… ALL FOUR OF YOU PROMISED THAT YOU WOULDN’T ABANDON US! YOU SAID YOU COULD PROTECT AND CARE FOR US, WERE YOU JUST LYING?” All of us just look at her as she struggles to turn so she can stare at Luna, who stops her pacing and stares back. “AND YOU! YOU ARE THAT READY TO GIVE ME UP, FOR A SECOND TIME? WHAT HAPPENED TO WANTING TO MAKE UP AND START OVER, HUH?” Even with my attention on Moonshade, I feel Lily jump a little as she tries to press even further into me, her hands covering her ears as I wrap her in a gentle hug. “Calm do---” “Moon, you’---” “NO, I WON’T CALM DOWN! YOU SAID YOU WERE SORRY FOR GIVING ME UP AS A BABY! BUT YET HERE YOU ARE, ALL READY TO GET RID OF ME AT THE DROP OF A PIN! I HATE YOU!” Her fist, with the wrist wrapped in an ace bandage, punches hard and deep into the nearest pillow a couple times before Luna can stop her. She is kneeling in front of Moonshade gripping her wrist gently. “Enough, Moon. You cannot risk hurting yourself even more. And yes, we did promise you that we will keep you safe, and that is why we are here. I do not agree with my sister’s idea to send you away.” She continues to stare into Moonshade’s eyes while speaking, her thumb running across the multitude of scars on her wrist. “While yes, it may seem the safer play, it is a false sense of safety. I would rather have the both of you stay here so we know you are both safe.” “How do you propose we go about doing that, sister? We cannot take enough days off to ensure they would be safe, Posey and Chrysalis cannot do it either due to their work.” Celestia comes up behind Luna and looks down at her sibling, her fear for the two girls plainly evident. The clearing of his throat draws our attention to Fire, who has moved after I sat down, staying by the doorway. “If I could, ma’am, I have an idea.” “Go ahead Fire, and you don’t have to be so formal here.” “Yes ma’---, myself and Stalker are currently not on any assignments and we could pull a security detail for them while you are away at work, secure the house with one or both of us providing outside or inside security. Also, we can provide security while you are out at a mall or wherever.” “I’ll have to see if I can pay you guys for this. But if I can’t, are you both alright with not being payed for this detail?” “Yes, we are. There are more important things than money, and protecting two innocent victims is one of them. You can talk this over with Stalker, but we both came to the same conclusion and idea.” Moonshade tries to turn and look at him suspiciously while Lily smiles and hugs him. “What do you think, Celestia?” I don’t have to convince Luna, I can tell she is already on board with this idea. “I personally do not like it. I’d rather go with my idea, but if you are willing to do this of your own free will, Fire and both Lily and Moonshade agree to it, than I will go along with it.” Celestia releases a pent up breath filled with stress as her arms unfold and she takes a few steps towards the bed. “I like the idea. Thank you, Fire.” Lily pulls away from him and makes her way up the stairs, skipping a little. Either she’s thirsty, or needs to use the bathroom. Either way, we need to take a step back and cool down some, wait till I get some more information and figure things out some more. As she closes the door the four of us turn to face Moonshade, who sighs and in a surprising move, uses her least injured arm to press on my shoulder and she struggles to stand. Before we can even think to stop her, she is on one foot, swaying unsteadily as she glares up at Fire. “If you do, the only rooms you are allowed to be in are the kitchen, living room and bathroom. One wrong move, one wrong look, and I will make you regret it. Now get me upstairs, I’m done here.” Her bandaged arm wraps around Luna’s neck as the woman scoops her up, trying to be as careful as she can and heads upstairs. “I hope you and your boys know what you are doing, Chrys. We are taking a major risk, keeping them here. Why do you think the guy is here?” Posey says as it is now just the four of us here in the basement. “I think they are here to find them, specifically Moonshade, to keep her from testifying against the two families that abused her.” “What is going on with our new unwelcomed visitor?” Celestia flops down onto the bed, landing on her back. An arm flopped over her eyes. “Right now, he is in custody at the station. I got a few guys working on digging into his information and seeing what they can dig up on him that can be useful to keep him there. If it’s alright with you, Celestia, I want to install a top of the line security system. It’ll alert myself, Fire and Stalker of any break-ins or anything suspicious.” “Alright, whatever you feel is best. Go and do it Chrys.” > Chapter Six; Results- Moonshade > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- “Moonshade, are you alright?” The woman asks as she carries me to my room and sets me on the bed. I have no idea how long she waits for an answer, but after several minutes of silence, Luna finally gives up and makes for the door. “Why… why does this have to happen? Just as life was finally starting to look up, this… shit has to happen, on top of the bombshell you dropped on me. IT ISN’T FAIR!” The pompf of my injured fist yet again hitting a pillow is barely audible as I roll onto my good side and try to curl up. “Why does life want to keep making me miserable?” “I do not know why, and I know it is not fair, but I do know that I will not let anything happen to you. I know life is unfair, but you have already proven you are a survivor. Please, do not be afraid to talk to someone when you get too stressed.” As she sits down on the bed gently, one of her hands gently strokes through my spiky hair as she just look down at me. “I heard you have been doing very good with your placement work so far. In fact, it seems you are nearly ready to be enrolled in Canterlot High, if you want to be enrolled early.” I roll back and look up at her, knowing that she wants to change the subject for me. The move causes me wince at the slight bumping of my still injured shoulder and as I look up at her face, I can see how emotionally drained she is. “Thanks, I’ll keep that in mind. And as for enrolling early, I don’t think I’m ready. Is there any way I could just continue to be homeschooled?” “No. Sorry Moonshade, but you need to have more positive social interactions in your life. It will be good for you.” My grimace at the last few words just makes her laugh, which is soon joined by my own laughter. “Are you looking forward to getting out of the sling and cast next month?” “Yea, I am. Though I’m dreading the physical therapy.” My recently lightened mood turns serious. “Could I… could I sleep in your bed tonight? I… I don’t think I can sleep tonight after what happened.” “Of course you can, though we might turn you into the middle of an oreo.” Her attempt at a joke falls flat as I stretch and yawn, falling asleep before she can even lift me up. The next morning starts like usual, the battle to get me up and moving is followed by a shower and going through the tortures of being dressed. Thankfully the only upside to the morning is the breakfast cooked by Sunset or Celestia, though it isn’t as good as Applejack’s cooking. Despite the normality of the meal, there is an undercurrent of anxiety and watchfulness emitting from Celestia, Luna, Lily and myself. Once the routine of goodbye hugs and words of caution are distributed, Celestia, Luna and Sunset take off for school, leaving myself and Lily alone with the two guards. Thankfully the booklets, and helping Lily, provide a good enough distraction that I forget about them for the most part. Around lunchtime though the usual routine is broken up by a call from Sunset. “Hey, Sunset.” “Moon, I know you met both Rarity and Applejack already, but after discussing it with my friends, Luna and mom, we think it’s about time you met the rest of my friends.” “Why? I’m perfectly happy just knowing those two, why do I need to meet the others?” At my words Lily perks up, smiling brightly from her place in the kitchen, readying our lunch. “Because, you need to have more social interactions and building up your social circle before you start school is going to be a big help. Plus, some of the others have gotten too impatient, I can’t keep them away any longer, especially since Pinkie wants to throw a final pool party followed by sleepover at my place.” “Fiiine, not like I have much say on this. If I want to be left alone, however, promise me they will stop bugging me.” I can already feel my spirits drop, dreading the mess that is sure to come. “I promise, we’ll be coming straight home from school and we are bringing three other, younger girls… oops, that’s the bell, got to run. Take care, Moon.” As she hangs up I just let my forehead land on the table with a very loud smack as I mumble a couple curses. Lily on the other hand seems to have perked up and all throughout lunch and beyond she talks almost nonstop about how she met the others in the group. About how her and a Rainbow something have a few common interests and how she met three younger girls who seem to be related to Sunset’s friends. Shortly after four, as I’m reclining in the sofa and Lily is finishing up her booklet the door opens, letting in a jumbled cacophony of conversation as nine girls come in at once. Unfortunately my spot on the couch makes me immediately visible, and the first girl to rush me is a very energetic pink skinned girl with poofy, darker pink hair. “Hi, I’m Pinkie Pie, I am SOOO happy to finally meet you and---” Thankfully Applejack and Sunset are able to pull the girl away and silence her as they notice how uncomfortable she is making me. “Sorry ‘bout that, sugarcube. We tried ta make her understand not ta do that, guess she didn’ listen. Why don’t we get ya introduced ta the others.” “Thanks AJ. Let’s get this over with.” The next one to approach is a cocky, athletically slim girl with cyan skin and rainbow colored hair. Her magenta eyes speak of her desire to conquer any challenge thrown at her. “Hey, I’m the one and only, totally awesome, Rainbow Dash. Nice meeting ya.” Her handshake is firm, and the way she is applying pressure makes me think it is a bit of a competition. “Hey, Rainbow Dash.” Even though my gaze meets hers, I refuse to play her little game, which upsets her as she walks off, joining Sunset and AJ, who she wraps in a waist hug from behind and smiles. A slight snarl at the display is my only answer as I turn my attention to the next girl, who seems like one of those brainiacs you sometimes see. Her large, square glass slide a little off of her nose and a purple hand is extending in offering. Her hair is dark blue with a thin stripe of purple and a little thicker stripe of pink in it. Her handshake is nervous and a little awkward as she offers a slight smile. “Hi, I’m Twilight Sparkle. Sunset said that you are very smart, I’d like to maybe have a study session with the both of you.” “Thanks Twilight, we’ll see what happens, but I wouldn’t hold my breath.” “Well, you know that technically I can only hold my breath for---” “Twilight, it is a figure of speech, meaning that it won’t likely happen.” Sunset gently guides Twilight off to the side, making room for a buttery hued girl with long, pink hair. Rarity gently guides the girl over to me, who turns and hides behind the immaculately dressed girl, hiding her face behind her pink bangs. “Fluttershy, darling, there is no need to be scared. She is just guarded, once you get to know her she is actually very nice.” As she ends her encouraging words Rarity gives me this look that screams at me to be nice, which only earns her an eyeroll even as I plaster a fake smile on my face as the shy girl approaches. “He… hello, I’m… Fluttershy.” She actively avoids my gaze and doesn’t offer to shake hands, as she says her name I have to strain to hear her. “Nice meeting you, Fluttershy.” The lie comes easy enough, and seems to relax her a little as she goes off with the others, who are gathered by the patio door. My attention is drawn to a trio of younger girls standing in front of me, wide smiles plastered on their faces. The first girl to speak has a large, pink bow in her reddish hair, wearing a bright green t-shirt and rolled up blue jeans. “Hi, Ah’m Apple Bloom, Applejack’s younger sis.” As I take her hand the next one to come forward is wearing green cargo shorts and a black top, her purple hair looks a little messy and even though she tries to tone it down, I can hear the intensity she normally seems to be full of, just like Rainbow Dash. “Hey, I’m Scootaloo, nice meeting you, Moonshade.” The final girl has a surprisingly cute squeak in her voice, wearing a short sleeved, pinkish jacket over a white and pink top and a yellow skirt. Her alabaster skin looks similar to Rarity’s, though her pink and purple hair couldn’t be any more different. “Hi Moonshade, I’m Rarity’s sister, Sweetie Belle.” The trio take a deep breath, as if they are about to shout something, but stopped by a look from Sunset. “And we are The Crusaders.” Their voices sound a bit sad, as if they were punished for something. Once the introductions are made and the trio are out in the back, I notice that Sunset and the others have already stripped their clothes. They must have been planning this for a while, or they keep their swimsuits at the school. Fluttershy and Twilight are wearing one piece suits, Fluttershy’s suit is mostly a light green with some sort of flower print while Twilight’s is a plain purple that is darker than her skin. The other four are wearing bikinis, with Rarity’s light blue bikini has full, circular cups and a pair of regular looking panty like bottoms. Her bikini also seems lined with some sort of fringe. Rainbow’s bikini top is strapless with the bottoms tied at the side and cut to show off as much of her abdomen as it can. The coloring is blue with golden bolts going down the center of the cups and along the edges of the bottoms. Applejack is wearing a checkered, triangular top with the bottoms looking like a pair of daisy dukes. Sunset’s fiery bikini is a mix of AJ’s top and Rainbow’s bottoms. Pinkie, meanwhile has the cups of her top and the bottoms made to look like cupcake frosting topped with cherries. Lily, who disappeared when the others arrived, comes out of our room, wearing a white bikini with a print made to resemble a fully bloomed lily as seen from above. Once she joins the others, Lily helps me back to our room and even though I can’t do any swimming, she insists I get changed in some kind of swimsuit. After a few moments of debate I’m dressed in a one piece suit that is black, except for a full moon that starts on my right, curves around the side, and ends on the back. As we get out onto the patio I notice the trio are also wearing one piece suits, Apple Bloom’s is green with an apple over her stomach. Scootaloo’s looks almost exactly like Rainbow’s, except the golden bolts are a continuous line down the sides. Sweetie Belle’s suit is a plain aqua color. All three are already in the pool and playing some kind of diving game in the shallower end. As we step out onto the large patio made of stone that surrounds a very large pool, the girls start to slather themselves with sunscreen, and in Rarity’s case, suntan lotion. As Lily helps rub the sunscreen along my exposed skin I can’t help but tense up and fight back the urge to defend myself, even if the others are ignoring us. Once I’m properly covered in the goop I’m lain in a sea green beach chair that is slightly reclined with Rarity taking the chair next to me, who is now sporting a pair of sunglasses. “What do you think of the rest of our friends, darling?” Looking at her I can’t understand how her laying on her stomach is very comfortable. “To be honest, I don’t know. Rainbow seems… intense and very competitive. Fluttershy is very timid and easily frightened. I am concerned about Pinkie and how… hyper she is. Twilight seems somewhat approachable, though awkward. As for the Crusaders however, they don’t seem too bad.” As I talk to her I work on ignoring the sounds of splashing, laughter and cries of surprise coming from the gaggle in the water. “Why aren’t you in there with them?” “Yes, they can be, but they also have their good qualities as well once you get to know them, which I encourage you to do. I do know that you have somethings in common with Twilight and Rainbow, but you will need to talk to them to find out what it is. As for the Crusaders, yes they can be good, but they can also be a handful.” With a smile she looks at her friends as they seem to have switched to a game of Marco Polo. “As for why I am not joining them in there, I would rather not get my hair ruined after putting so much time and effort into it.” Shaking my head I turn my attention to my tablet and after some difficulty I find myself at a site that is quickly becoming my favorite. The website is a fanfiction site for various shows, book series, movies and comics, in which I get lost in some of the fan stories based on Daring Do. The current story I’m reading has a lot of romance in it without any sex. “Hey Moonshade, aren’t you hungry?” Lily’s question breaks me from the spell I’m under due to being so lost in the story. As she asks the question the tablet is picked from my good hand and placed on the small table next to my chair. As I look at her I notice an empty spot at the large table with a plate containing a hamburger with lettuce, tomato, and mayonnaise. The burger is surrounded by homemade coleslaw and potato salad. A cup of ice cold pop is also sitting on the table. “Starving, thank you, Lily.” Carefully she helps me out of the chair and leaning on her I hobble my way over, and find myself seated between Lily and Applejack. Looking over I notice both Celestia and Luna at another table, close to the grill and the rest of the food. Rarity and Sunset, both grinning at me, bring up the topic of the Daring Do series, which both Rainbow and Twilight jump on immediately. I’ll get you both back for this, I know why you did that. You are both rotten to do it. As expected I find myself joining in the conversation, much to my annoyance and the amusement of the others. The rest of the day goes by and eventually we all head back inside after the girls dry off and head into Sunset’s room to change as myself and Lily head to our room. “It was good to see you open up, even if it was forced. I think you made yourself two more friends.” With a mock snarl I throw one of my pillows at her, which she ducks with a laugh. I can’t help but join her as she takes a pillow and smacks me in the face with it, basically starting a pillow war between us before we lay back in my bed, smiling but feeling happy and we pass out, cuddled tight against each other. ~~~~~A few weeks later~~~~ The routine of the next couple weeks are changed up a little by visits from the rest of the girls, mostly Twilight, AJ or Rarity. However, today I have a doctor’s appointment, hopefully it will end the way I want it to as I’m helped into Luna’s car, carrying one of the few reminders of my first family, the stuffed bear mom placed in my arms during our… final hug. Even Lily and Sunset tag along, hopping into one of the two marked SUVs occupied by the pair of guards. The vehicle looks like it belongs in the Secret Service or the FBI, with how it is painted and how darkly the windows are tinted. Chrysalis and Celestia are unable to join the group due to work. “Looking forward to this, Moonshade?” Luna smiles as she pulls out, followed at a safe distance by the SUV. Looking at her, I only shrug with my good arm. A swirling storm of emotions conflict with each other so much that it is threatening to overwhelm me. Only the comfort of Sergeant Bear, as I have come to call him, helps keep the emotions from rushing out, and I only respond by giving the bear a very tight squeeze. Should I… if we are related, why should I give her the chance she wants? She has been nothing but kind, caring and comforting to me ever since her and Celestia took us in, would it really be that bad to deny her the chance she is practically begging for? She abandoned me, she doesn’t--- but she had no way to take care of me. Who is to say one of her drug or alcohol buddies wouldn’t have tried the same thing? Who is to say they would? She doesn’t deserve it. Yes she does. The conflicting argumental thoughts only start to cause a headache as they continue clashing. So, with my mouth stuffed full of Sergeant Bear, I begin to mumble out the words of the song playing on the radio in an attempt to ease my thoughts and clear up the confusing mess. As soon as my anxiety starts to tone down a few levels the car slowly drifts to a stop, and in front of us looms the large hospital. “I know you are scared, Moonshade, so am I. The sooner we get this taken care of, the sooner we can figure out how to proceed. Just breathe for me, baby, breathe.” At Luna’s words my thoughts break apart into a million little pieces, and it is only then that I realize how difficult it has been for me to breathe. In desperation I gulp in as much oxygen as I can now that I have regained self awareness, my eyes feel like they are about to pop out of my head as my heartbeat feels like I just got done running for a couple hundred miles at top speed. Perspiration soaks the outfit Rarity made for me, making it cling to my body as my hair is plastered with sweat and is now hanging in a wet mess. “She looks like a mess, but she’s breathing again, the color is even returning to her face.” I have no idea who said that, but soon I’m made aware of the crowd surrounding me at a distance. “Are you okay, Moon? Do you need to see a doctor?” Once I get my breathing under control I take a few more super deep breaths before giving my head a shake. “No, let's just… let’s get this finished.” Once the others are sure I’m not going to pass out or freak out we make our way inside, the two guards at the outside of our group and their heads moving rapidly from side to side. Our procession continues until we reach the first appointment of the day, Doctor Stable. Once checked in Luna makes a couple calls, moving off to the side of the room as she does so. Probably to let both Celestia and Chrysalis know we made it safely. Lily and Sunset on the other hand have busied themselves in a deep conversation they tried to get me involved in, but I just can’t seem to focus on it. “Moonshade? The doctor is ready to see you now.” The nurse, whose white coat blends almost perfectly with her white skin, calls out while holding a clipboard, smiling as I’m pushed closer. The guards stay back with Sunset and Lily as Luna, who just ended her calls, pushes me down the hall. “How have you been, Moon? Any pain or problems with your shoulder or ankle?” “Besides the dull ache and my ever growing desire to rip them off? No, I haven’t been having any problems with them.” Once we are inside the office she takes the usual vitals and records them onto the sheet of paper. No matter how many times I’ve been in here, I can’t help but look around the cramped room. The patient’s table sits along the room’s right wall semi reclined, while opposite is his desk dominated by the computer, though he does have a few pictures of his family scattered on the edge closest to the door. A couple medical charts and posters hang on the only two available walls. “I hear you, I hated it when I broke my leg. Nearly drove myself into a straight jacket by the third week.” Her laughter at the end and the joking manner she said that brings an unstoppable smile to my lips, and even a little bit of a giggle as well, which does not go unnoticed. “Well, seems your mood and attitude has been improving as well. I know the doctor is going to give you one, but here, a little treat from me as well, though you may want to hide it or eat it fast.” “Thank you.” The offered sucker is hidden in Luna’s purse as the nurse smiles and walks out the door, I can clearly hear humming coming from her as she walks past. The wait to see Doctor Stable is not a long one, and is passed by a rather uncomfortable conversation with Luna trying to talk me into possibly joining Sunset’s band after the impromptu show I gave her in the vehicle. “Ready to get that cast off, Moonshade?” My overly eager nod brings some of the doctor’s gentle laughter to bear, which is only mimicked by my possible mother. “Well, we need to take a few X-rays first, but it is only a formality.” As Luna sits in the office after getting me dressed in a hospital gown, the caramel hued doctor pushes me deeper into the building, and with each step I can feel my tension rising again, though for a very different reason. The X-rays seem to take forever as I’m lain on the table and a multitude of pictures are taken of my shoulder and ankle. Both the radiologist and Doctor Stable go over the images in the booth, making some comments and notes that only make the time lapse seem even longer. “Well Moonshade, just as I figured. We can get you out of that cast and sling today, though you will need to use a knee walker while you are going through physical therapy, which we can have you start as early as tomorrow.” “Thanks Doctor, for everything you’ve done so far.” I have no idea what caused the flood of emotions to break free, but for some reason I find myself hugging him with my good arm after he helped me into the wheelchair. “You are very welcome. And seeing you get healthier is all the thanks I need, though the hug is very appreciated.” The cast and sling removal feel so good, and I have to fight the urge to roll the joints around. After the instructions for care are handed over and explained he hands me not one, but two suckers, both are cherry flavored, my favorite. As the six of us are reunited in the waiting room, both Lily and Sunset crush me in a group hug, though they are being mindful of my still injured shoulder. “Well, I hope I’m not interrupting anything too mushy.” All of us look up and there is the buttery skinned woman, standing there watching us with her friendly blue gaze. “I hope you two are ready for this, Luna, Moonshade. But there are some things we definitely need to go over, in private. And congratulations on getting rid of the cast and sling, Moon.” As we pick our way to the office Posey is using, I can feel not only my tension rise, but also Luna’s, judging by how much stiffer her posture has become as we walk through the plain white corridors. Posey’s office looks almost like Doctor Stable’s, though instead of medical posters she has a couple of those motivational ones and posters encouraging people to report child or elderly abuse. Also, in place of the medical table is a pair of more comfortable looking, older style chairs. “Now, I do have the results of the test, but I think there is something you need to let her know, Luna.” What now? What kind of bombshell can she drop on me this time? I just look at the woman sitting next to me in confusion, hoping that it was some sort of good news. “Moonshade, I wanted to keep this a surprise from you, and still want to surprise Lily with this, but Chrysalis and I were looking into legally adopting the pair of you.” Wait, really? Why? Did she even consider the whole ‘we may be related’ aspect when she talked about it? “Why? Why did you want to adopt us? When did you even consider it?” Again I have no idea how to feel about this latest turn of events. However, there is a bit of warmth in my belly at her words. Maybe… maybe she does deserve a chance, she was willing to go through that entire mess to keep us… keep me in her life. “Because Moonshade, it hurt me to hear what you have gone through and I wanted to ensure that you get the life you deserve. To give you an environment that can help you heal from your past.” As she pulls me into a hug, her cyan gaze locking onto my own ruby pools. “As for how long I have wanted to adopt you, it started that first day we met. Even with how stand offish you were, there was something about you that seemed to call out to me.” “Thank you, Luna. For all the help, support and care you have given me so far. I… I didn’t know how much I meant to you.” “You are very welcome, and no matter what happens with these results, I never wanted to take away what your first family has done for you, but instead build on it.” “It’s good to see you two getting along right now. Now, I haven’t looked in this envelope yet, but if it does turn out you two are in fact related, you will need to talk to Discord about regaining your parental rights.” Posey hands the envelope over to Luna, who immediately lays it on my lap. “Given what I have seen between you two and know about you, Luna, I can give him my recommendation after I go over your old files.” Nervously I look between Luna and Posey and down to the envelope. Luna gives me an encouraging nudge as Posey motions for me to continue. “Go on sweetie, I know you want to see what it says.” With my eyes closed my hands shake as my heart beats wildly in my chest, the sounds of shaking paper echos through the room, or so it seems. With a deep breath I slowly open my left eye. Seeing the words on the paper my breath hitches as I read the words over and over, all my thoughts just stop. . . . . . . According to this DNA test, Moonshade Hearts is Luna Eclipse’s daughter. > Chapter Seven; Results- Luna > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- She’s my- I look over at my dau- Moonshade, wondering what must be going through her mind as the paper falls gently to the floor. Please don’t hate me too much, Moonshade. “Are you alright, Moon?” The question coming from across the desk breaks us both out of our thoughts. Discreetly I glance over at the teen on my left. The fleeting look I spot on her face says she is still processing the news. “Luna, I know you both have something to think over, but I really think we need to schedule a meeting with Discord within the next two weeks.” “O- okay, I’ll get back with you tomorrow on that. Do you- if Moonshade wants it, do you think Discord would grant me custody of her again?” Posey looks at Moonshade for a minute, who is still lost in her own thoughts before answering. “I am not sure. I can offer my recommendation to allow it. I will look forward to that call and next week I am coming over for a visit to check up on how things are going, okay.” A soft smile graces her lips as she hands me a small pile of forms. “And you will need to fill these out, the both of you.” “Thank you, Posey. Moonshade, are you hungry?” The papers are stuffed in a manilla envelope and handed to me before Posey and I stand up. My hand lightly resting on her shoulder causes my daughter to flinch and jump. “Huh? Are we… are we done here?” Even though her head is lowered it is not lowered enough to keep me from seeing the internal fight in her eyes. I can also hear it in her words. I was a complete screw up and now… she has to live with it for the rest of her life. Maybe… maybe it would be best if I don’t take custody of her. I want to giver her the life she deserves, but… can I? Knowing that seeing me every day will be a constant reminder of the hell she lived through? I can’t bring myself to look at her, though I do try to keep my expression happy, which only earns a sad shake of her head from Posey.”Yes, we are finished. Are you hungry?” “Yea, I am actually. You know, I never had a steak before. Think we could… forget it, we ca---” “It’s alright, Moonshade. We can definitely go get ourselves a steak, been a while since I had one myself.” After a quick hug we make our way back to the waiting area, where Lily is working on fixing some of her errors on her latest booklet while getting help from Sunset. Fire in the meantime is sitting off to the side, nose buried in a book. “Ok kids, let’s get out of here. I’m hungry and so is Moonshade.” I can see the questions in their eyes as the teens pack up what they had out, but they decided against asking, for now. I guess that is a small blessing of sorts, for now. Unlike the ride here, the backseat of my vehicle is occupied by both Lily and Sunset, who break into a conversation about Canterlot High. They go over all of what Sunset feels important for the younger girl to know, and even try to get Moonshade involved, with limited success. While Lily seems interested in the different extracurricular activities, Moonshade seems even barely in the offered classes, and no interest whatsoever in the afterschool programs or sports. The only thing that seems to perk her interest is the offered J.R.O.T.C. program. I really need to talk this over with Tia and Chrys. I don’t want to make any more bad decisions when it comes to Moonshade. I guess the most important person to talk this over with is Moonshade, see what she thinks would be best for her. Despite the internal conflict and my darkened mood we make it to my favorite restaurant safely, Long Horn. “Hey Fire, can you take both Lily and Sunset inside, please? Or at least wait by the door? I’d like to have a quick talk with Moonshade.” The two girls exchange a look that is part curiosity and part nervousness as they exit and stand next to the hulking security guard. “Sure thing ma-- Luna. Come on Lily, Sunset, let’s give them some privacy.” Once the doors are closed I turn to face Moonshade, who hesitantly meets my gaze with a frown. “Alright Luna, or should I start calling you mom? What did you want to talk about?” “No, I don’t want you calling me mom unless you want to. As for what I want to talk about, mostly how are you feeling about this and how we can handle this situation.” A strand of her hair comes loose from her bangs, brushing against her nose. Before she can swipe or shake it away I’m already acting, brushing it back behind her left ear while smiling at how silly it looked. Her smile, though fleeting, warms my heart a little, or it could be the slight movement of her pressing her head against my hand, or a mixture of both. “Thank you. As for… as for… this… us, I just… I don’t know.” Before she continues she turns her head, focusing on the floorboard. “On one hand I… I want this to work out. I truly want to make up for all the years we missed and be the family I always wanted. But on the other I… I want to hate you, so, so very much. I want to jump out of this vehicle and run as far as I can while cursing your name.” Tears start to stain her cheeks as leans in towards me, sobbing as her good arm wrapping around my neck. “I’m just… I’m so… I’m very confused right now.” As I gently hold her against me, my left hand begins to lightly tap against her back. “I understand, Moonshade. I am having my own, confused thoughts about about this situation as well. I think… I think during your next visit with Dr. Sunshine we need to talk this over and get some ideas. I know I want to make the best decision possible, for both of us. And we can’t do that with our minds so messed up.” “O- okay. I… I… sure.” The sounds of a complaining stomach breaks the momentary silence, bringing an embarrassed smile to her lips, which only causes me to let out a light chuckle, increasing her embarrassment. “Sounds like someone wants some attention, come on, the others are waiting for us and you could use another five pounds at the most.” Getting her knee walker from the trunk an idea comes to mind, now freed from the dueling thoughts regarding Moonshade, at least for the time being. One of the reasons I love this place is how it was built. Instead of the brick and concrete most buildings nowadays are made from, this place is built to look like a very large wooden cabin. On the awning, right above the entrance is a dangling, wooden sign with red neon lights formed to spell the name in a stylized script. The paneling around the windows and wooden door is painted a dark green. As we join Fire, the girls and I can tell something has alarmed him by the slight stiffness of his shoulders and how focused he is on something. Taking a quick glance in the same direction nothing looks out of the ordinary or suspicious. Moonshade also appears to pick up on the slight change, though she begins to look around nervously. “Sunset, go get us a seat, please, and take both Lily and Sunset with you. I need to use the bathroom.” With a nod she heads inside, with the other two exchanging nervous glances before scanning the area as they follow her. “Okay Fire, what perked your interest?” “I thought I saw someone taking a little bit more interest in the three of us, specifically Lily. I’m guessing it was someone who knows Lily’s parents, if I recall the pictures Chrys passed out. Here is a picture of her, I already sent it to the boss.” He brings up the photo, the detail is really good despite the distance. The woman looks to be mid to late thirties with purple skin and lighter purple hair styled as if she just stepped out of a salon. Her face is turned just enough to keep us from making out her features. “She ducked into that store over there. And has yet to come out.” He indicates the expensive looking wedding boutique across from our spot. “Alright, thank you. We’ll keep an eye out, do you think we should tell Lily and Moonshade?” “That is up to you, but if you want some advice, those two are stronger than you think. Plus, they need to be aware of possible threats.” “Such a gentleman, thank you. And thank you for the advice.” As we step into the restaurant and settle into the pair of tables placed together, Fire grins at the sight of the glasses of pop in front of the teens. The restaurant has a warm, welcoming feeling on the inside as the log cabin design is continued. The decor takes the form of various hanging pictures of past rodeos, celebrities or special guests that have come here to eat. A couple jerseys and other memorabilia of various sports also share the wall with the pictures and a couple fish and game trophies. A square bar is the center of the space over on the left side of the building and a couple t.v.s that are hung on the wall are tuned to some of the different sports games going on today. The noise of various conversations amongst the patrons around me assault my ears as my nose is attacked by the smell of freshly cooked and seasoned steak and baked potatoes. “Shouldn’t you girls be drinking water or lemonade? I thought we said no pops, at least not that much?” It’s actually Moonshade who retorts, with a bit of sass. “Oh come on, mom. Let us indulge ourselves for once. Besides, what is a better way to gain weight than this?” With a smirk she takes a big swig of her glass, downing nearly half of it. “There are right ways and wrong ways to do that, little missy. And what you are doing, is the wrong way. Plus, add a second strike for your snarky attitude, one more strike and we’re going home, without the steaks.” A chorus of boos expectedly come from Sunset and Lily, though Fire’s booing is unexpected. Three on one, not fair at all. I expected some sort of support from him. “Fine, calm down you guys, sheesh.” Lily orders a six ounce, ribeye steak cooked medium well with a butter, cheese and sour cream loaded baked potato with a refill of their drinks. Sunset orders the house salad, a baked potato with butter and green beans. Moonshade on the other hand, is unsure about the different cuts of steak and eventually settles on an eight ounce, medium-rare t- bone with a small side salad and baked potato loaded with sour cream and butter, with my help of coarse. Fire and myself order a filet mignon, his is a twelve ounce while mine is a six, with a house salad and green beans. Our drinks are the house special lemonades. “So, what was the verdict of the DNA test?” The question from Lily startles Moonshade, who just looks at me, nervously. “If you want to, go ahead and answer. Or we can wait to tell Celestia and Chrysalis at the same time.” As I answer Moonshade’s unasked question I try to keep my features neutral, which seems to work as both Sunset and Lily change the topic. Shortly our order arrives, much to the amused look on Moonshade's face at the sight of her own plate. Lunch is really good, as it always is here. Judging by my daughter’s reaction to not just her steak, but a piece of my filet mignon as well, she enjoyed it as well. If the DNA test did not already prove it, this does. She’s hooked, I can tell. Like mother like daughter. As we are about ready to get into the vehicles, Fire freezes again, staring at the bridal boutique. Right in the doorway is the woman he was concerned about. Again we can not get a good look at her face, but something about her seems… predatory. As the two of continue to watch her, the trio try to look in the same direction as we are, but thankfully the security SUV is blocking their line of sight. I don’t know if she notices us or not, but she continues down to the other parking lot and out of sight. The drive home is a bit nerve wracking, as I keep checking my rear view mirror, but the only thing I can see is the SUV driven by Fire. Despite the earlier alarm, the girls break down into again talking about what they might be interested in at the school. Moonshade bombards Sunset with questions about the J.R.O.T.C. program while Lily asks about drama and a couple of the sports. Maybe one of these days soon, we can get Moonshade and Lily to visit the school, meet their perspective teachers and classmates. Maybe even give them a taste of some of these programs we offer, but first, I gotta convince Tia, though that shouldn’t be too hard. Nothing out of the ordinary happens as we pull into the driveway, much to my relief and probably Fire’s as well. Celestia and Chrysalis are waiting for us in the living room. “So, how did it go, Lulu?” As my sister asks from her spot, Chrysalis jumps up with a smile and wraps her arms around my neck. “Don’t even think about it, not in front of the girls.” Out of the corner of my eye I can see Sunset slightly blushing, but smiling. Whereas both Lily and Moonshade are standing there, embarrassment mixed with a slight hint of anxiety etched on their faces and also in their stances. “Sorry Lily, Moonshade. You know, you’ll both have to work through that problem you have with witnessing intimacy.” As Chrysalis goes to sit on the couch, she drags me with her while urging the two to sit next to us. “I hate to say this, but eventually you two may want to start dating, and showing affection in the form of hugs, kisses, holding hands or cuddling are part and parcel of dating. I know you both have suffered a lot when you shouldn’t have, but are you going to let your past fears run your life and keep you from enjoying the positive aspects of being in a relationship?” As much as I hate how she worded it, I have to agree with her. They do need to figure out how to work past this fear, if they are to have a positive relationship with someone. “However, we promise that we will keep it as light as we can to help you two out. Now, Moonshade, do you want to tell them, or do you want me to?” Tenderly I place my hand on her shoulder and look at her, trying to catch her lowered eyes. Taking a deep breath she just nods while standing up shakily, I can feel the tension in the room and almost hear the mental questions and comments running through everyone else’s mind. “According to the dna results we got today, Luna is in fact my biological mother.” She sounds both angry and sad at the same time, and I can only guess why. Tia smiled widely as she wraps both of us in a gentle hug. Chrysalis and Sunset are wearing the same expression, one that is of shock mixed with joy and optimism. “I would say congratulations, but I think you both have a lot to work out. So we’ll hold off on any parties until then. Either way you both choose, welcome to the family, niece.” Tia looks at Moonshade as she speaks, holding the newest member in a careful hug as she makes it sound as if her words are directed towards me. Looking over at Lily, I can tell she is upset, but trying to hide it, though before I can ask her about it, Moonshade starts to make her way to her room. As she hobbles down the hall, both Sunset and Lily follow her, offering to support her, which she silently accepts. Once the door closes, I slide off of Chrysalis’ lap and they both just look at me with my sister finding her voice first. “How do you feel about it, Lulu?” “I’m… I’m confused right now. Part of me wants to make up for all the pain and suffering she went through, so badly. But then, I just....I feel as if I have no right to claim her or to be a part of her life. Afterall, it is… because of me that she… that she suffered the way she did.” As I draw my feet up onto the couch, both my girlfriend and my sister embrace me from either side of me. As I hug my knees I can feel the tickling of tears as they start to form. “How did Moonshade react to the news? And did you tell her how you feel about it?” Chrys comfortingly begins to rub my back gently while letting her voice go soft. With a couple of sniffles to fight back the growing need to cry, I can’t help but think of what the three girls are talking about right now. “She… she is also having her own conflict. She… she wants to hate me, for how easily I gave her up and for what she… suffered. But at the same time she wants a… new start, to try and have an... actual family again, like her first adopted family was.” Burying my head into my knees, I can feel the waterworks are about to start, and I can do nothing to stop it as I continue. “We… we promised that we… talk to Dr. Sunshine again, we will… we will see what he has to say.” I must have cried myself into a nap, cause when I wake up, both Sunset and Lily are in front of the t.v. and playing a video game. My phone, which is nearly dead, reads six pm, just in time for dinner. For the rest of the evening Moonshade does not make an appearance, which worries me, along with Celestia and Chrysalis. Chrysalis is waiting for me in my bed after myself and Tia go through the normal nightly ritual of getting both Sunset and Lily to bed. “So, been a topsy turvy kind of day, huh?” She’s laying there in her teal bra and panties with the lights turned down. “I figured you could use some stress relief after today.” As I close the door, I am glad my primary room is on the opposite side of the house from Celestia’s, though I’m a bit worried about how any possible noise will travel through the floor. While having these two new teens have not done much to hamper my sexual intimacy with Chrys when we feel the urge, this is only the second time we have been this close in mine and Celestia’s house. “Thanks, Chrys. It has been a crazy day today.” Without thinking I join her on the bed after stripping down to my bra and panties, laying on my stomach, stretched out. Immediately she leans over and works her magic on me as she kneads her fingers into my skin in an attempt to smooth out the tension that has built up. I can’t help but let out a low moan as she focuses on my shoulders and back, undoing the bra strap so she can have better access. The message doesn’t seem to last that long as Chrys flops down next to me, grinning. As a passionate kiss is quickly shared I start working on her as best I can. Moans quickly escape her lips a her eyelids flutter close. Her hips give an enticing wiggle as I work on her buttocks and down her legs. As I work on her feet, she surprises me by turning over and wrapping me in a tight embrace. The next morning I wake up, feeling fulfilled and happy, though naked and entangled in my lover’s limbs. Her eyes fly open as I try to extract myself from her grasp to try to get ready for work. Before I am successful she twists her naked body till she is pinning me with a naughty smile. Her kiss lands softly on my lips and I lose myself in the passion of the moment. For a few moments we just lay like that, entwined in each other's arms, jumping as Celestia knocks on the door. “Come on you two, breakfast is almost ready and we can not postpone the start of school just so you can both finish each other off.” As I get ready and meet the others downstairs, I can’t help the fierce blush that colors my cheeks, and Chrysalis seems to be having the same problem. Immediately the teens joining us pick up on our discomfort, and while Sunset has a couple snickers at our expense, both Lily and Moonshade just avert their gaze though they also let out a few giggles of their own. As Tia and Chrysalis get ready for work, both Moonshade and myself get ready for a pair of appointments she has today. The first with Dr. Sunshine and the other is to get her started with physical therapy. Lily actually decides to accompany both Sunset and my sister to what will hopefully be her new school after a short discussion regarding my idea of allowing them to visit and get a tour of the place. The plan for after the appointments is to let Moonshade at least do the same thing, but only for half the day. *****On the road***** “Luna, about what Chrysalis said at breakfast. Do you… with what I’ve… with my… past do you really think there would be someone willing to still… be with me?” While I have been expecting a question from her for the first half of the drive, seeing as how she has been silent and fidgety since we left, that wasn’t the question I was expecting. “If the person truly does care about you, then not only will they not be worried or disgusted by it, but they will also try and help you heal from it. And before you ask, yes, I know that somewhere out there is willing to be that person.” As we hit a red light, the last one before we get to the hospital, I give her a hug and quickly kiss her forehead. Surprisingly, she doesn’t try to back away from the kiss like she normally would. Once we’ve pulled into the parking lot and get ourselves a close spot another thought comes to me. “You just need to be willing, open and when you become most comfortable with him, honest. How long that takes is up to you.” The trip through the hospital is spent in silence, but this isn’t an uncomfortable silence, more like a contemplative one. The silence between us continues until we are called in to see him. “Hello there, Luna, Moonshade. How have you both been? And congratulations on getting the cast and sling removed.” His smile is as bright and welcoming as I remember from our last visit. “Hi doctor, thank you for that, and I’m doing… alright I guess.” He obviously does not buy her short answer as she avoids looking at him. Guess I’m going to be the one to bring this up. “Hey doc, I am… confused right now I guess you can say.” “Oh? And why is that? Does it have to do with some of what we talked about a few weeks ago?” His expression as he turns his full attention to us shows he is genuinely interested. He even pushes the keyboard under his desk and leans in closer with his chin resting atop folded hands. “Yea, we… we got the results back yesterday. And we are in fact mother and daughter.” His nod and smile shock me a little. I figured he would be surprised at the news. “Well, congratulations on the news. How do you feel about it, Moonshade?” I figured he would ask me, since I told him. But then again, maybe he is more worried about her mental state than mine. My daughter's deep intake of air is all I need to know that she is still having conflicting thoughts on the matter. “I’m… I don’t know how I should feel, but what I am feeling is anger and hatred along with relief and some happiness.” “Alright, and why are you feeling that way?” Despite his note taking, he never removes his eyes from Moonshade. “I… I want to hate m- Luna because if it wasn’t for her, none of what I… what happened to me might not have happened. I… I wouldn't have… suffered the… horrors I did.” Her hand wipes across her eyes in an attempt to clear away the gathered tears. “But.. but also I… I see this as the… second chance I’ve been wanting. A chance to have a loving family, again.” “Moonshade, what you are feeling, it’s perfectly natural for someone that has been in your position. What about you, Luna?” “I want to be there for my- for Moonshade, give her the life she deserves, to love and be there for her. On the other hand, I… I gave her up without a fight and I feel as if… I do not deserve to be given that chance.” He leans back as I finish with his hands cupping the back of his head. “I can see you both want something positive, but feel you do not deserve it due to different reasons, which are completely legitimate.” Exhaling a deep sigh he looks at the both of us for a moment. “And I am guessing you wanted to hear what I have to say, huh? Well, from what I have seen from you both the only thing I can suggest is try to embrace it. Once a day call each other mom and daughter, also sit down and talk with each other about both the negative and positive feelings you have. I honestly think you should give this new relationship a chance, but don’t force it.” “Thank you doctor, we will give it a shot.” For the rest of the hour he mostly focuses on my daughter and going over some of the homework he has given her in regards to helping her cope with the trauma of her past, though he does take some time and talks to me about my past mistakes as well. All too quickly our session is finished and he dissipates a few last words of advice and encouragement before we say our goodbyes. As we make our way to Moonshade's physical therapy appointment, we discuss our thoughts on what doctor Sunshine said about our new predicament, even listing off the pros and cons of giving it a shot. He was right, seems we both have more pros than cons when it comes to trying to build our relationship. Once we have made it to the physical therapy office, our conversation has turned to small talk, which the usually gloomy teen actually smiles through, even giggling a little at certain times. Come to think of it, after talking with him and getting the D.N.A. results, it feels like a weight has been lifted from me as well. The hour long physical therapy is for the most part taking her range of motion measurements and general health questions before starting her off on some easy exercises for her shoulders and legs. As Moonshade gets to work, the therapist hands me a stack of papers detailing stretches and exercises she can do at home, along with some tools for some of them before returning his focus on what she is doing. I can not help but frown as she seems to shrink back into herself as the therapist tries to engage her in small, to which she seems to force her replies until it is time for use to leave. After a couple last words of advice and support from her therapist we finally make our way to the car, with my phone reading ten thirty. She might hate this idea, but the sooner we can get her acclimated to the school the better. “You getting hungry, Moonshade?” With the both of us strapped in I turn the car in the direction of the high school once we hit the main street. “Yea, a little. Think we can hit that steakhouse again… m-mom?” The way her eyes light up at the possibility… it just hurts me to deny her the request, specially when she called me mom. “Sorry daughter of mine, but for your own good, both myself and Tia think it’s best you eat lunch in the school cafeteria.” Her look of… maybe horror, or just nervousness is priceless, to the point I can’t help but laugh the whole way to the school as she tries to argue against the decision. Even as I park in the faculty lot and we head inside, she is still trying to argue against my decision, which only makes me laugh more. Hm, Sunset and Applejack should be on their free period right now, maybe I co- My thoughts are interrupted by one of our newer students. His grey skin is a couple shades darker than Moonshade’s and his long, black hair sticks out in multiple spikes. A pair of half framed, silver glasses hang on his nose as a dark blue vest covers his white shirt. “Hello there, Midnight. Can I help you with something?” He expression while standing there is a stoic one as he looks in my general direction. "Yes ma'am." His tone is flat but even as he speaks, just like how it was when he first transferred here. "I'm searching for the science lab." "The science lab is on the second floor in the left wing." I know he is new here, and doesn't know Moonshade, but maybe getting her to acquaint herself with one of the other students besides Sunset and her friends would do her some good. "Is there something special you need in the science lab? I thought this was your lunch hour? Oh, and Midnight Radiance, this is a new student who will be enrolling next semester, Moonshade." Hmm, that might not be a bad idea. I step aside, away from Moonshade and wait to see what she does. "Hi." Just as I thought, her greeting not only sounds forced, but her body is now very stiff, as if tensing to defend herself. The blankness of his gaze as his eyes bore into mine creeps me out a little before he replies. "It is, but I just want to know where the class is ahead of time, so I won't get lost when looking for the class. I refuse to be tardy." He stands firm in place, like a soldier before looking over at her. "Hi." He responds back, calmly, showing no emotion on his face as he gives Moonshade the same tense greeting she gave him. Looking over at Moonshade I seriously have doubts about this, as she is actively trying to avoid his gaze or even acknowledging him. Giving her a slight nudge earns me a glare and a sigh as she extends her hand grumpily while staying focused on something else. "Hi, I'm Moonshade." Midnight turns to face her all the way before raising his hand and taking hers in his hand, his face is kept as a completely emotionless mask. “Nice to meet you, Moonshade.” After the handshake he moves his hand back to his side. Even though he stands here emotionless, his mind is running a hundred miles per second. He gives a small smile. "So, do know where I can find Ms...Harshwhinny? She's my science teacher.” The boy's moment of freezing sort of worries me and I can't help but notice how stiff the handshake was. At his question I shake my head, clearing out some of the thoughts. "Yes, I do. She's--- know what, why don't I get you two a guide to show you around the school. I will get in touch with your afternoon teachers and let them know you are getting a better tour of our facilities." As those words come out of my lips I do not know if it was fate, or plain ole stupid luck, but the sounds of three very familiar voices fast approaches, arguing over some kind of event or another. It can not be that bad, letting those three act as chaperones, will it? Please girls, do not mess this up. Sure enough, the trio of mischief makers round the bed, greeting myself and Moonshade by name. Before they can introduce themselves to Midnight I interrupt. "Girls, I have a really important and very big favor to ask of you. Can you show Moonshade and Midnight around campus, please? Answer any questions they may have along with giving them a full tour.?" With matching grins of... either pure evil or mischief they look at their older peers while answering simultaneously. "Yes Vice-principal Luna, we would love to. CUTIE MARK CRUSADER TOUR GUIDES, YAY!" "Huh?" Midnight turns to face the girls as they yell loudly. As they yell, his hair is thrown back some in a comical fashion, from the exertion of just how loud they were yelling. I can't help but try to hide my snickering at him as Moonshade just explodes with laughter, which is soon joined by the three troublemakers. Soon enough the younger trio grab both Moonshade and Midnight and drag them off, despite the size difference. As the five teens round the first corner I finally head to the office so I can join Tia and Raven for lunch. Throughout the rest of the day I find it hard to concentrate on my work due to my thoughts drifting back to Moonshade and how she must be doing while surrounded by her peers. What didn’t help is the fact that the crusaders have, yet again, blown up the chemistry lab. Thankfully, Celestia gives me the go ahead to leave early. Apparently Lily wants to experience the full Halloween treatment, to include wearing a costume, which means I get to take them shopping while Celestia works. A smile plays on my lips as I notice Moonshade, Lily, Sunset and Rarity are standing around next to my car, engaged in some kind of conversation. Before I can get close enough to hear what they are talking about, Rarity looks up and spots me with a grin, which draws the attention of the others. Lily and Sunset are also wearing a grin that just screams mischief while Moonshade is obviously on the defensive. “Darling, you simply must join us, I have a wonderful costume idea for you that I know you’ll love.” As the five of us get buckled in, Rarity, who is sitting in the middle in the back, tries to continue their earlier conversation. “Plus, I think I can get that boy, Midnight Radiance, to join us.” “Why would I care about some stupid guy being there? He was a complete ass! On top of that, why do you think I want to wear some stupid costume, anyway?” The round of giggles from the back seat at Moonshade’s defensiveness, specially regarding her comments about Midnight, peeks my curiosity. “What happened between you and Midnight, Moonshade?” “Nothing, just… just let it go. Forget you ever heard that.” “Oh darling, it most definitely was not nothing. Why, I saw it with my own eyes, he---” “Rarity, if you tell that story again, the one where you're romantically charged brain saw things that were not there, I swear I will kill you right now.” I can hear the fluster in her voice, even over her rising anger. “Calm down, Moonshade. Rarity, don’t tease her anymore about Midnight Radiance.” I hope this works. “Now, I know you don’t want to dress up or go out for Halloween, Moonshade, so I’m going to give you a choice. Either A, you can go out with the others and not wear a costume or B, you can stay home and help pass out candy, but you have to wear a costume.” “Do I really have to? Why can’t I choose option C? Stay in my room and not come out.” As expected, Moonshade turns back to face forward in her chair while angrily folding her arms atop her chest. “Nope, either A or B, those are your options.” With a smile you pull up into the Party City’s parking lot. “We only have a few before Halloween, so either you can choose, or I will choose for you, along with the costume, if I make you wear one.” I can just imagine all the horrible thoughts going through her mind as Sunset and Lily try to stifle their laughter at Moonshade’s reaction. With a shake of my head and a barely held in chuckle we make our way to the entrance of the store, only to find it flanked by two older looking teens and three juveniles. A quick look around almost raises my suspicions enough to cancel this trip as I can’t seem to locate the body guard’s SUV. “Surprise, were you looking for me, gorgeous?” All of a sudden my world goes completely black as a pair of breasts press into my back. As soon as the words are whispered in my ear a pair of soft, moist lips kiss the back of the appendage before nipping at my earlobe, earning a couple awws from Lily, Sunset and Rarity. “No, I was not. I was looking for a respectful woman who is also beautiful and classy.” At my words she backs away with a fake humph of annoyance as the peanut gallery laughs at the banter. “But now that you are here, you can help me out. You see, Moonshade does not want to go trick-or-treating or even dress up. So right now I am debating on what I am going to have her do if she does not make her mind up by let’s say… we get to the finish line.” “Sounds like fun, I’m in.” With a smile and a quick, sloppy kiss to Chrysalis’ cheek I entwine my arm in hers and head back to the store. Before we can get any further the three pre-teens approach happily, beelining it for Lily while also catching Sunset and Rarity up in their conversation. Moonshade in the meantime moves backwards, closer to us in an attempt to not draw attention to herself. Out of the corner of my eye I notice the two older kids watching the trio. The older pair could possibly be twins, despite the fact that their skin is the opposite shades of orange. As they continue talking amongst themselves the one with deep blue hair nudges his brother while looking in our direction. Please, do not let them be talking about what I think they are. There is only one reason for them to be looking at us and gesturing like that, my daughter, and seems she caught the eye of that shy, fiery red haired kid. > Chapter Eight; All Hallow's Eve pt 1- Lily > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- “Hi Lily, how have you been?” Before I can brace myself I find myself surrounded by three somewhat familiar kids, though I can’t seem to really place them. I must have met them for only a short time, plus I had other things going on. “I don’t think she remembers us.” The girl says, sounding a bit upset at my lack of an enthusiastic greeting, or maybe it’s the fact I forgot her name along with names of her friends or brothers. As I am surrounded I notice the tensing in Moonshade’s body as she keeps her distance while Sunset and Rarity watch with smiles while talking amongst themselves. Even the two teenage boys in the distance are whispering to each other, one of them blushing a little as he looks in Moon’s direction. I hope she doesn’t catch you staring at her like that, whoever you are. Before anything else happens Luna breaks up the gathering. “I’m sorry you three, but we are in a hurry. Maybe next time you can spend more time chatting with Lily.” Her words only bring the trio to grumble and pout as they head back to the teens. As I watch the kids I notice Chrysalis possibly frowning somewhat as Fire whispers something in her ear, though I only got a fleeting glimpse as she puts her hand on my shoulder. “Alright, kiddo. An ideas on what kind of costume you want?” As we step inside the store, both myself and Moony pause. I don’t know about her, but I cannot remember the last time I went trick or treating or wore a costume that didn’t involve- No, can’t think of that, I… I won’t think of… that. Not right now. “No, not really.” “Well darling, I have an idea for you, along with Moonshade in regards to costumes, even though I would have prefered to have made one myself.” As we walk down the aisles Rarity is frowning somewhat as she eyes the racks of premade costumes. With a smile I pat the fashion thinking girl gently on the shoulder. “It’s ok, Rarity. If you’re still around next year I’ll gladly let you create me a costume.” My attention is drawn away from her and towards a couple costumes. The one that has caught my eye is red along the shoulders and stomach, with a darker red along the chest and includes a very high collar. The sleeves are a black mesh. The mid thigh length skirt is black and crumpled a bit. There is a cape like piece that hangs from the back that matches the skirt. Completing the ensemble is a pair of black stockings and knee high boots. “I never pegged you for a vamp girl, Lily. But then again, I never thought you would be a biker chick, either.” Sunset says with a smile as she comes up behind me, looking over the same costume. “Well, I am not sure about it, Lily. I mean, it looks so… tacky and dark and it certainly does not suite your coloration, darling. Are you sure you would not prefer one of the cuter costumes further back?” Rarity cringes a bit at the sight of the costume after giving it a quick glance. “Yes, I like it alot. Now, let’s see if there is one my size and see if I can try it on.” Sunset walks off towards another end of the store, saying something about finding some good props, leaving me with a reluctant Rarity who helps me find one that looks just small enough for me, grumbling in an uncharacteristic manner. I wonder which choice Moon will choose, or what Luna is gonna have her do if she doesn’t choose. Looking around the place, I notice most of the people in here are younger kids, either in small gangs or alone, commenting and going over various costumes. Thankfully there are changing rooms and one is available as we get there. Sitting guard outside the cobwebbed and decorated rooms is a human skeleton dressed as a pirate while a ghost circles us on the ceiling. As we get close enough, the skeleton actually moves, his eyes light up, and he actually speaks, though what he is saying I can’t tell due to my surprised scream. “Calm down, darling. It is a prop, have you not- I guess you would not have seen stuff like this, if what I heard about your parents is true. This will be your first time actually celebrating Halloween, will it not?” “Y- yea, it will be my first, at least, the first one I will be able to remember.” A tear rolls slowly down my cheek as my words are sorrowful and spoken with a couple sniffles. More tears threaten to follow suit, but I can barely hold them back. “Just… just wondering, what is it you guys do for Halloween? Do you have any special parties or something?” Rarity offers me a piece of cloth and a friendly smile as she recognizes my attempt to change the subject. “Usually Pinkie has something set up, as she normally does. You are in for a major treat, because her parties are very festive and fun. Now, we should not waste too much time and leave the others waiting, this room is available for you to try it on.” Alone in the room, I smile while imagining what the party would be like as I start to undress. However, as I get ready to change I catch a glimpse of myself in the mirror, and for some reason, I can’t help but look back at my reflection. My mostly exposed body doesn’t show any of the bruises from my past, those having been healed a while ago, though the doctors say I’m still underweight. But the eyes… staring back at me I can see all the pain, hurt, fear and anger I have become familiar with. As I continue to stare at my reflection I can hear the tiny voice in the back of my mind, it’s words matching what I’m seeing. Someone who is hopeless, lost, unlovable, unwanted and weak. Caught off guard by these thoughts I try to fight back with positive ones, even using more recent memories, like when Chrysalis and Rainbow Dash went dirt biking with me. Unfortunately, these countermeasures are taken too late, and I can feel myself starting to become trapped in a whirlpool. A touch to my shoulder, light and hesitant it seems, snaps me out of my negative thoughts along with making me jump. “Are you alright, darling? You have been in here for a good ten minutes or so without answering me.” As Rarity brings me back to ground I begin to notice the wet streaks on my face. With another sniffle I again take the offered hanky and dry off the tears. “Just… had a negative reaction to seeing my own reflection. Sorry for worrying you, Rarity.” Putting the cloth away I begin to pick up the costume pieces, though my hands and body are still shaking. Putting her hand on mine, she stops me from putting it on while at the same time turning me back to face the mirror. “Before we get to that, Lily, what was it that you saw in the mirror, and please, don’t hold back.” “I… I see a weak, pathetic girl who… who is unwanted, unneeded and… unloved. A girl who should just… give up on a lot of things, like finding a loving family or friends.” Before I can lower my head, Rarity keeps me looking in the mirror, and I can actually see her smiling. “It is a shame you see that, Lily. Because I see a beautiful girl who is worthy of all the love and affection she deserves and then some. One who, despite her hard past is full of kindness. Can you see her, standing there in the mirror?” What is she talking about? Is she… is she just being… nice to me? Not wanting to look at her directly I glance at her reflection, and what I can see has me stunned a little. I can’t see anything in her expression that says she is lying. With a deep breath I only partially succeed at calming myself down. Looking back at my reflection, I partially see what Rarity sees in my reflection. “Not to the same extent as you seem to, but I do see it a little.” “Good. Now, let us get you into this costume and see how it fits, the others are getting a bit nervous.” With a smile she helps me into the outfit, getting the zippers I can’t reach or showing me how to properly put certain items on. In almost no time it seems I’m fully dressed with Rarity fussing over the smallest detail, remarking how it fits. It seems to take hours as she does whatever it is she does, muttering the whole time. “Well Darling, I may not fully approve of your choice of costume, but it does look good and seems to properly fit you.” With her approval I carefully strip the costume off and get dressed in my usual clothes. “What do you think Moonshade will choose? And if she does not, what do you think Luna is going to choose to have her do?” “Honestly, I don’t know. Despite my past… experiences with costumes I am looking forward to this. Moonshade, however doesn’t share my views on this.” As expected, Moonshade is wearing her usual scowl as we approach, seems Sunset joined them after getting a pair of fake extended canines and fake blood. As Chrysalis joins Rarity and I in the shortest line I grin while glancing at Luna and Moonshade. “So, Moonshade, have you made your mind up yet what you want to do?” “Yea, I’d like to stay in my room for the night.” Moonshade just stands there, her arms folded and her expression is one of seriousness. “If you must insist on that, then I insist you accept your punishment.” With a wicked grin Luna walks off, and before she returns the line has moved till we are checking out. “WHAT? NO! NO WAY AM I WEARING THAT!” Curiously I turn, just like everyone else must have done, to see what the commotion is all about. While I can only see her back, I can only guess at Moon’s expression as the costume that was chosen is revealed. I don’t see what is wrong with it, personally. Luna is holding up a cartoonish looking penguin costume and smiling. “Well, this is one of two punishments you can choose. Either wear this but stay home, or pick out your own costume and escort the Crusaders for the night. And if you still insist, then I am going to have no choice but have you wear this AND go out with the Crusaders.” “Fine. I hate you for forcing me to do this, mom.” I can’t help but chuckle as the blue skinned woman pats Moon on the shoulder and smiles, probably reacting to the scowl that must be on my friend’s face before she storms off. “Well, I have no idea which will be more interesting, the costume she chooses or watching her try to keep those three in check for tonight.” Sunset smiles as she watches the scene while standing behind me. Chrysalis is standing on my right and smirks, which is the first time I noticed a shopping bag in her right hand. Catching me looking at the bag she laughs while musing up my hair. Soon Moonshade returns and is not happy as the costume she seems to have chosen is military themed. “Did you make sure that it fit you properly?” An unhappy growl only answers the onyx skinned woman’s question. “Rarity, go with her and make sure the costume fits properly.” As they return Moonshade seems even more upset and is muttering curses under her breath while Rarity even seems upset over something. My guess, they got into an argument over the first costume or some other costume Rarity thought would look good. The new costume, which is now black and includes bits of red, crimson and black lace along with shiny boots that remind me of those seen on a pirate have me raise an eyebrow as the fashionable teen carries it. Sunset must also have noticed the change in expression on the alabaster girl and frowns as she waits with me by one of the doors. After Moon’s costume is bought the tension, especially between her and Rarity is easily felt, making me thankful I get to ride with Chrysalis while Luna is stuck with those two and Sunset. The next couple of days go by in their usual, boring, monotonous way. Celestia or Luna fix breakfast, shower and then go to work while me and Moonshade are stuck at the dining room table doing our work. More like, I am stuck but by lunchtime she is already finished. On the day of Halloween it was decided that the girls would meet us at Celestia’s early via text message, though I had to relay it to Moonshade due to her being secretive with her phone number, besides Luna, Celestia, Chrysalis and one or two other adults the only ones who have her number is myself and Sunset, but that only came after we had to promise not to give it to anyone else. Once I’m done with my homework for the day I actually rush into our room with excitement while Moonshade seems to sulk and plod behind me. “Come on, Moony. Aren’t you excited for tonight?” “No, why should I be? You remember all those costumes we were forced to wear, I hate the idea of wearing mine, how it looks and this holiday overall.” I shake my head at her comment, knowing I’m not going to change her mind. As the door is closed behind her I immediately begin to strip and get ready for a shower, grabbing only a clean pair of bra and panties. “Think you can lay out my costume for me so it’ll be ready when I get out? Then after you finish your shower I’ll need help with a few pieces of my costume and I can help you into yours.” Before she can protest I leave the room in a hurry, smiling as I slink into the bathroom, not noticing Luna approaching until she cries out in surprise and disappointment as the door is slammed shut on her. I am so excited for tonight I end up rushing through my shower, and I’m sure Rarity would freak out at how poorly I let my hair dry, only blow drying it for a few minutes before using a towel. After a quick brush of my teeth and getting into the clean underwear I hurry back into the room. “Why are you so excited about doing this?” Moonshade just levels me with a look that screams of betrayal as I put on my costume. “Why? Because I know you can sense this is a fresh start for us, and sharing in this experience with those other girls, including your cousin, could help us. Plus, it sounds fun.” Despite her attitude Moonshade does help me out when I need it. Looking in the full length mirror I’m glad I chose this costume despite Rarity’s protests, I look good in it. Might not like how short the skirt is, or how tight it feels, but I like it. Maybe I can have Rarity make something similar for me next year. Opening up the bag with the props, which I promised myself I wouldn’t look at until now, makes me squeal as I pull out the items. Soon, lining my desk is some specialized makeup to lighten my skin, which Rarity said she’ll apply, some high quality fake blood packs, a pair of high end acrylic fang extensions for my canines and a pair of earrings with blood drop style rubies. A choker of red velvet and black lace with a silver pentagram and a ruby blood drop in the center lay next to a pair of wristbands. The wristbands are also red velvet and black lace attached to a ring with a silver pentagram and a ruby blood drop. The jewelry finishes the accessories and have to be put on after Rarity finishes the makeup. Smiling, I open the fangs and with some difficulty I get them attached and placed properly. I barely notice Moonshade leaving the room, still dressed. As I wait for her I can’t help but stare at my new fangs or play with them with my tongue. “I vant to suck your bluud.” I can’t help but try the line out, practicing my vampiric accent and also getting used to talking with the attachments. I’m so caught up in my practicing and just basically admiring myself I didn’t realize Moon has returned. “What, are you going to turn into one of those egomaniacal villains who can be easily defeated by a mirror? If so, let me know now. Plus, I thought vampires don’t have a reflection.” I don’t know if it’s her attempt at humor, or just plain making fun of me, but I’m glad she seemed to have relaxed some. Turning around to face her I notice that her expression and stance is as neutral as her tone of voice, not giving me any clues as to how she meant her comments to be taken. Unlike me, she decided to take her costume into the bathroom with her and dressed in there. The jacket looks like some kind of black velvet with extended shoulders and goes down to the bottom of her ribs, as it looks the jacket was meant to purposefully stay open, exposing a black halter top like shirt with dark red skulls and crossbones. The pants look to be made of the same material as the jacket, but is mostly plain except for the red belt with the skull and crossbones design for the buckle, as it sits the belt slopes some instead of laying straight. She looks very unhappy and I guess it has to do with how much of her stomach is exposed, I wonder how Rarity got her to wear something like this. “I’m planning on enslaving the world and I could use a strong minion to accomplish this, will you be my first, or shall I suck you dry right now?” I don’t know if it was my accent, or my humor but finally she does manage to laugh and smile, even if it was fleeting. “Your accent is horrible, you know that, right?” Once she’s sitting on her bed she slips her boots on, offering the barest of smiles. “Hey, she actually made a joke, or tried to. I thought you would be miss crabby the whole day.” The accessories for her costume, which are laying out on her bed include a red bandana with black skulls, red leather armbands, a fake cutlass which is currently placed inside her belt and finally a bandolier with a pair of crossed pistols. There is very little makeup to go with hers, and I’m not too surprised she opted not to include a matching hat. “Har har, very funny.” Before I can retort Sunset sends us a text, letting us know her and the others are on their way and will be here in about fifteen minutes. “Just try to enjoy yourself, okay. I will let you in on a secret, those three girls you are going to be with have taken an interest in you it seems.” A groan answers me as she flops lifelessly onto her bed. With a giggle I head into the living room, waiting for the girls to arrive while engaging in small talk with Celestia, who is dressed in a black body suit with white, plastic armor plates on her arms, legs and chest as a matching helmet rests on the table next to a holstered firearm. Soon the others arrive and I barely have time to greet them all in the flurry. Sunset is dressed as an angel, complete with wings and a halo while Twilight resembles what one could guess a wizard. Applejack looks like a scarecrow, complete with hay coming of of her clothes. Rainbow Dash is dressed up as some kind of soccer player, Rarity is surprisingly dressed down and looks like what one would think of when it comes to country bumpkins. Fluttershy is wearing something that gives her the general appearance of a bear with Pinkie Pie dressed as a clown. Following behind them are three girls Moonshade is going to be with, though I guess Luna and Chrysalis will be joining them as well. The trio are dressed as superheros, though which ones I have no idea. They must have coordinated their costumes with Luna and Chrysalis, cause the two adults are dressed up as supervillains. Before the others could get comfy and start chatting me up Rarity takes me by the hand and ushers me into my room to get my makeup on. “Are you ready for tonight, darling?” “Definitely, can’t wait.” As the fashion forward teen goes to work lightening my face and neck I can’t help but grin as I watch her via the mirror. As she moves on to the fake blood her reaction to the fluid brings out a giggle, which earns me a nasty look before she applies it while complaining to herself about how messy and uncouth this part of the costume is. “I still cannot believe you have chosen this type of costume. Worse, why did you agree with Sunset about including the fake blood? You know this stuff can stain clothes and is just… creepy.” With a smile I examine the transformation I have underwent in the mirror, pleased with my new look. “If it makes you feel better, Rarity, I promise next time you need a live model, I’ll do it. How does that sound?” I have been wondering what it would be like helping Rarity out with something like that, to be honest. With one last look in the mirror I get out of the chair and head back to the living room with the other teen following behind me. “Oh that would be magnificent… IDEA!” It seems she has lost herself in thought, which I could only shake my head at as I enter the room, noticing that Moonshade is seated on the couch and surrounded by the Crusaders. The older teens are standing around chatting with Celestia, Luna and Chrysalis standing in front of the door. “Okay girls, before we unleash you twelve onto society, we have some ground rules to go over.” Celestia’s mention of ground rules draws a round of groans and complaints from the majority of the group. “Rule 1…” > Chapter Nine; All Hallow's Eve pt.2 Moonshade > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- “Rule one, have fun out there and collect as much candy as you can.” Celestia holds up a fist with just her pointer finger raised while barring the door to a night of what I am sure will be pure hell. Having to deal with these three pint sized bags of energy will be taxing enough, but to add that there are going to be other… people out there as well, no thank you. The trio I’m going with crowd me for some reason on the large couch, with the orange skinned girl almost fully on my left thigh while the mustard colored girl is on my right and the porcelain hued teen is taking up the middle. All three are smiling widely, despite my frown. “Rules two and three, Do not get yourselves separated, especially you two, Moonshade and Lily. Also, do not talk to strange adults who approach you on the street.” As if we need to be reminded of THAT danger, well, maybe the other girls do. “Now, are you ready for a night of fun?” A chorus of excited yay’s answer her, almost ripping the house apart it seems. As the others get up eagerly to get out and do… whatever, mom stops us with a smile. “Before we release you monstrosities onto the world outside, it would be prudent if we get some pictures first outside the house.” Great, just what I wanted, I just hope this doesn’t take too long. The front of the house is covered in cobwebs and spiders. On the porch sits a couple skeletons with their eyes glowing a bright red. In the yard sits a couple fake, dead trees, ghosts and tombstones with some of them sporting extended arms from piles of dirt. The first set of pictures is of just me and Lily, who is nearly vibrating with energy and has the goofiest grin on her face. While I stand there with my arms folded she stands behind me, tilting my head a little with her mouth open as if she were about to bite my neck. Mom, Celestia and Chrysalis snap multiple photos of us using their own phones, mine and Lily’s. The next set of pictures include myself with the troublemaking squirts, who crowd in front of and around me uncomfortably before taking some silly poses. The third picture is Lily with Sunset and her gang, again taking silly poses. The final pictures are of all twelve of us in one big group, the younger girls standing in front of their sisters with me and Lily in the center. Lily is standing in front of me and after some arguing I finally relent and wrap my arms around her neck and let them dangle limply down her chest. “Okay girls, a few last minute rules,” Mom turns to the smaller group, which I’m a part of. “You four will only be allowed to stay out for two hours, tops and will be allowed to have three pieces of candy from what you collect. You other girls, you can stay out as long as you want, but don’t miss the party at Sweet Apple Acres.” The three younger girls groan and complain, though they are quickly silenced by a stern look from Celestia. With a round of hugs for everyone, even myself, we finally part ways. “Alright, I’m so going to get the most candy!” Scootaloo shouts as we approach our first house. “Ya wish, Ah’m gonna git me two bagfuls before the hour is up.” the trio not really concerned about the fact I’m using a knee walker as they drag me with them in a hurry despite my surprised shouts of protest. The first house we visit is two stories and actually made of brick which has been painted just light enough so the red barely seeps through the white. The windows on the lower level are large with the tops being rounded and surrounded by red drapes, skeletons and ghosts stand menacingly behind them. The porch is pretty basic, only a could feet wide and a long and lined with a white railing. For the holidays the house is draped in black spiderwebs, age cracks, and other supposedly spooky decorations. “Trick or Treat!” The trio hold their bowls out expectantly as they greet the elder homeowner energetically who opens the door after they knock energetically. “And I hope you three are staying out of trouble tonight.” The man smiles as he drops a couple handfuls of candy into each container. “And who is this young lady unfortunate enough to be joining you?” Unfortunate is right. “Go on, Moonshade, he won’t bite.” Not exactly what I’m afraid of, but if it will get us off his porch, fine. At the insistence of the squeaky voiced girl I hold my pillow sheet up, though my mouth stays in its perpetual frown. Despite me standing there like a begging idiot the man stands there without dropping any candy into my case so we can leave, almost as if expecting something. “Go on, Moonshade. Ya have ta say the line first.” The young hick says as her and her friends laugh at something. “Fine. Trick or treat.” The words come out with not much enthusiasm as I stand there, frowning as I don’t even try to make eye contact. Again, the man stands there, seemingly not impressed. What is it going to take to get off this porch? I already feel like a complete idiot, and it is only getting worse with each passing second. “Moonshade? Is… is everything alright?” The high, squeaky question interrupts what could have been a quickly devolving internal dialog, thankfully. “Huh? Oh, sorry uhm… Sweetie Belle, was it?” The young teen and her friends stare at me, sporting looks of equal parts confusion and concern. The two tone haired girl nods as the trio approach me, I guess to try and offer some comfort or support. “I’ll tell you later, okay?” Again I say the stupid little jingle, but I manage to offer a smile and I manage to say it in a more chipper tone. The stranger must have been appeased because soon a couple pieces of candy duly thunk against the bottom of my bag. Mumbling my thanks the four of us step off the porch, but once we get someplace that offers some privacy the girls turn to me, with mom watching us carefully. “Okay, Moonshade, what is wrong? Are you not having fun?” The direct line of questioning stops me for a minute, definitely not something I expected from the athletic girl with purplish hair. Deflating, I blow out a sigh of nervousness before I look at the girls, biting and chewing on my bottom lip before finally answering. “I… this is new to me, being out in public, participating in events like this and being around people who care about me. My life before coming here has been… hard. Most of it I won’t go into detail, because I don’t want to think about and it’s stuff that girls of your age, or any age, should have to hear about. But, I will tell you what I can and feel comfortable telling you, okay?” Not really. “Sure, we’ll hold ya ta it, Moonshade. But fer now, think ya can try an’ loosen up fer the rest o’ the night?” The teen farm gives me a light hug before looking up at me with sorrowful eyes, as if she has guessed already some of the hell I’ve been through. What is wrong with me? There is something about these girls that makes me want to actually tell them and seek their comfort. A partial smile, which is returned by one from mom along with two thumbs up, is plastered on my face as the trio drag me along to the next house. This time I don’t have as much issue with following their lead with the silly line, and it seems to come out a bit happier after our little talk. Soon enough I’m finding that I am actually enjoying myself a little as I look down at my bag after we have left our fourth house. “How much candy have you three gotten so far?” What is it about these three that makes me feel so… different? As the four of us gather around and show off our bags of loot, something catches my attention and it just so happens to be on the edge of my peripheral vision and something starts to feel… off, though I don’t know why. Unfortunately, as I look around nothing seems out of the ordinary enough to have set off my inner alarm, no matter how hard I look due to it being gaggles of kids running around like wild animals or a good number of kids escorted by a couple adults. The one thing I have noticed is that we are dangerously close to a pretty dark alleyway. Another thing starting to worry me is the fact that I can’t see mom or Chrysalis. “Girls, lets… lets go b--!” “MMPH!” The muffled shout quickly draws my attention and standing right there behind Sweetie Belle, covering her mouth while holding both of her arms behind her is a man, one who looks faintly familiar. “Now, before if anyone screams I’m going to hurt this lovely girl, which will be unfortunate, so be quiet and follow me.” With a grin he drags Sweetie with him, leaving myself to follow with Apple Bloom and Scootaloo behind me fearfully. “And by the way, it is good seeing you again, Moonshade.” Shock hits me as I recognize the person, and immediately I growl out while tensing up, despite my still healing injuries. “What do you want? Why are you even here? Just leave us alone.” Has to be a way to get out of this, or get word to someone. “H- who is this, Moonshade?” Apple Bloom cowers behind me, along with Scootaloo, my arms outstretched in a protective manner. “How does he know you? What does he want with you?” “Come now, Moonshade. Don’t be shy, introduce me to your three new friends. I especially like the one with the cute, country accent.” Taking his hand away from Sweetie’s mouth he smirks while leering at both me and Apple Bloom. “Better yet, I think they should introduce themselves, starting with the country girl.” As much as I don’t to give him what he wants, unfortunately cooperation is the key to have the best chance to get away. Taking a quick glance down the alleyway, I notice that while it is blocked off, there is a single door to a building that could be his possible exit route. Lining the walls of the buildings are dumpsters and the usual assortments of trash, the stench already hitting me and presumably the girls as well. Nothing of use to help in here. Hmm, how best to make some kind of noise or something to get someone’s attention? Maybe that could work, these girls have quite a pair of lungs on them. “Go on, girls. Tell him exactly who you three are.” Please let them get the hint. “A- Ah’m… Apple Bloom.” They aren’t going to do it, they’re too scared. Can’t blame them, though. “I’m… Scootaloo.” “I- I’m… Sweetie Belle.” Come on girls, you have to do it, and do it loud enough. “Nice meeting you three. And I’m sure that we’ll become even better acquainted soon enough, though you have no need to know my real name, yet. For now you can call me Mr. Buck.” As he continues he gives me a disappointed shake of his head. “It is unfortunate that you and Lily left as you did, Moonshade. You two were the organization’s most favored pair after all. Maybe you can convince them to let you live.” Creepily he drags his tongue slowly up Sweetie’s cheek and I can imagine how repulsed and horrified she must be at that. “You two forgot the most important part, what group do you three form?” With my head turned away from the sight of him licking the unfortunate girl I have the perfect opportunity to whisper what it is I wanted them to do, and it seems they have caught on, judging by their widened eyes and slow nods. “Mister, Ah don’ know what ya have in mind, but ya should know me an’ mah friends have a special name fer the group we have created.” Do it, Apple Bloom. This should get someone’s attention. “Moonshade! Sweetie Belle! Apple Bloom! Scootaloo!” Perfect, they sound close enough. And it seems it isn’t just mom and Chrysalis, either. I can barely make out Applejack’s drawl and Rainbow Dash’s rough voice with them. “We are known as the-” All three take a quick, deep breath, which he doesn’t seem to notice as he’s more focused on the voices of those searching for us. His right hand goes down to reach into his left pocket, but before he can get there they let loose with their signature group greeting. “CUTIE MARK CRUSADERS!” Their shout must have startled him, or made him nervous enough cause whatever he was getting out he dropped in shock. “Damn you three, you’ll have to be punished for that.” Roughly he begins to pull Sweetie Belle with him towards the door near the back. “Now, unless you want your friend to be killed, I suggest you follow me, and no more surprises like that.” I can tell by the jumbled shouts of the others that they are quickly closing the distance. And from his reactions, he knows it as well. “Hi! Where you going with Sweetie Belle, huh?” *Gasp* “Is this a game? Are we going to be playing hide and seek? Oh, silly me, I forgot to introduce myself.” Both myself and Mr. Buck let out a yelp of surprise at the appearance of the pink menace behind him. “Hi, I’m Pinkie Pie! I haven’t seen you before, are you new? You must be new here,” *Gasp* “I need to throw you a welcoming-” Unfortunately for me, not having my grip on the knee walker combined with the unexpected surprise means my jump finds me landing hard on my butt, but still in front of the other two. “Okay, Pinkie, you can stop now. Thank you for distracting him.” Standing there, flanked by Applejack and Rainbow Dash are mom and her girlfriend. The two teens are snarling, as if they want to beat the living hell out of him. “I don’t know who you others are, but unless you want this girl’s death on your heads, you’ll let me get out of here, with Moonshade and the other three.” He’s trapped and he knows it, the door is too far back, and Pinkie is blocking him. To make his threat more real he grabs Sweetie Belle by her forehead as the arm around her arms moves to her neck, making it plainly obvious he is ready to snap her neck. “And if you do, there will be nothing left to keep us from taking you down. Not to mention homicide is grounds for a life sentence.” Both Apple Bloom and Scootaloo run towards their sisters, embracing them tightly. My attention right now is focused on Mr. Buck as I sit there, at least until mom comes up and helps me back up and onto the walker. As the standoff continues the other girls show up, announced by the alarmed scream of the group’s fashionista as she sees what is unfolding. “SWEETIE BELLE!” Surprising not just myself, but everyone else as well I force my way closer to the man, my lips twitching in anger as I get closer until Sweetie is the only thing between us. “Let her go, now.” “Or what? The only way I’m letting her go is if you come with me, peacefully. And that we are allowed to leave without anyone following us or the cops being called.” I can tell he is getting desperate, which is a state I’ve never seen him in before, meaning he won’t see what I have planned coming. “Fine, but if you want to move quickly, then you’ll have to carry me, I can’t go too fast with this thing. Just… leave her and the others alone, permanently.” Judging by Sweetie’s face and the gasps followed by the shouts of confusion and attempts to get me to reconsider they didn’t expect me to do that. To tell the truth, I didn’t either, this plan is risky and on the fly. If it fails, either I’m dead, or I’m back in the life of hell I ran from. Releasing Sweetie Belle he makes an immediate grab for me, which ends with me being held almost exactly like Sweetie, only he is supporting my full weight on my shoulders as he holds my arms awkwardly behind me. Thankfully the extra room between me and the ground gives me some clearance to get a good, forceful swing in with my legs. Thankfully the boots I’m wearing have thick, hard heels, though I only have one, maybe two swings. With a grunt I swing my leg as hard as I can, I guess my aim was somewhat effective, cause I do manage to land my first heel kick with enough force for him to loosen his hold. My second kick is more awkward but with it he releases me and falls to his knees, though I find myself falling face first onto the filthy alley street, my head thunking off the filthy cement and landing in a pile of trash before I black out. > Chapter Ten; Fears- Luna > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- "What do you have on those two, Chrys?” What was supposed to be a night of fun ended up being a night of real terrors and worries, not just for myself, but for the girls me and Chrysalis were supposed to be keeping safe. Fuck that bastard who distracted us. It was too neat and well timed to have been an accident. Sitting in the waiting room, both myself and Chrysalis await news about my daughter, along with Lily, Sunset, the Crusaders and their sisters. The others having already left after hearing about what happened. As we wait my mind drifts to what happened what seems like ages ago. ~~~~~A couple hours earlier~~~~~ “So, do you still think having Moonshade spend time with those three was a bad idea?” As I nudge Chrys’ side I softly giggle at her mock, exasperated sigh while keeping an eye out on the quartet from a distance. The both of us decided it would be less intrusive and humiliating than if we had them walk directly next to us. Though the distance does make me nervous. A few strangers sets me on edge, especially when they get close to the girls. As I watch my onyx skinned lover think over her question I greet a bunch of the younger students who were able to recognize me, and the sight of the half or three- quarter full bags give me a shiver. So not looking forward to Monday. “I guess you were right, she does seem to be opening up to them a little.” Her words snap me out of the horrible dreams I have always had at this time of year, the students running around like monsters so hyped up on all the sugar they have collected tonight. “Miss Luna Eclipse?” The sounds of a male voice calling out my name stops me immediately and causes me to look around in partial alarm, my focus diverted from the girls. Approaching us is a man dressed in what I guess is an expensive, dark blue suit and… I have no idea how to describe his salmon colored hair except for bumpy. His skin is a light greenish grey. His orangish brown eyes seem predatory behind his brown, full circle glasses. Even with the fast pace he is setting, I can tell he has a serious and purposeful gait. “Miss Luna? I am Svengallop, and I am here on behalf of children services in Baltimare. I understand you have had custody of a Moonshade Hearts and a Lily Bloom, is that correct?” Once he has caught up to us he extends a hand out to me and his smile seems… fake. “Why are you asking that? Is there something wrong?” Posey said that nothing bad would come of us taking them in, was she wrong? Hesitantly I take his hand, though I barely shake it. Something about touching him feels… wrong. When he offers his hand to Chrysalis she twisted around to look about before pulling out her phone. “Actually, yes there is. I can’t go into the details now, I am here to pick up both girls now and take them back to our-” “WHAT? Why… why would I turn my daughter back over to the people who allowed her to be… to be-” Interrupting him angrily my hands ball into fists as I step closer to him threateningly. I guess Chrys caught my move and positioned herself to intercept me. “Calm down, Luna. It won’t help your case if you slug him, even if this guy deserves it. You were the one in charge of Moonshade when she was brought to your adoption center, weren’t you?” Her eyes harden as she stares at him while at the same time her arms are wrapped around my chest, which normally I would have enjoyed, but now… I want her to let me go. “I know how hard this must be for you, ma’am, especially since you have just reconnected with your daughter. I promise we will keep her safe until you can-” “Like you kept her safe for the past what, ten, eleven years! How can you be so bat blind you can’t tell she was suffering all those years, huh? ANSWER ME!” I can feel my muscles tense for a fight and am barely aware of the crowd that has stopped and stares at us, a couple phones are also pulled out. At the same time my attempts to throw a punch are halted by my girlfriend’s arms pinning mine to my sides. “I’m sorry, ma’am, I truly am. I don-” As he offers an apology, a completely fake one, I lose it almost completely and actively struggle against the stronger onyx hued woman. “Chrys, let me go, now! I don’t give a damn how much trouble I will get in! I don’t accept your apology and I won’t hand my daughter or her friend over to a group that has allowed them to be hurt like they have been!” “I know how upset you must be, having learned what conditions your daughter was living in, but this whole mess is completely your fault. Had you not lost custody of her, she would not have been in the danger she was in. It will do you no good getting mad at me, or the Baltimare child protective services.” My jaw just drops at his words. Did he… did he just…? I… he is right, though. Had I… had I not been in the situation I was in, then Moonshade wouldn’t have suffered. Oh God, I am the cause of her suffering. “Actually, we don’t have to turn her over to you, since your office is undergoing an investigation. You can ask their social worker if you want. Now, if you are done, we need to get going,” My earlier rage has rushed out of every pore it can as I continue to blame myself for her suffering. I barely feel her try to turn me away from the bastard. “Hey, you alright, Luna?” “Actually, Miss, I have a court or-” “CUTIE MARK CRUSADERS!” The sounds of two extremely loud voices cuts across the air, and carries an extreme amount of fear. What the… that’s Apple Bloom and Scootaloo. I didn’t- Oh God, let them be alright! As I rush towards the general direction of the voices I realize that Sweetie Belle’s voice isn’t mixed in, only spurring me to run faster. Next to me I can make out Chrysalis on her phone, though I don’t know who she is texting or talking to, as her fingers fly over the lit screen and she is also talking, judging by how fast her lips are moving. ~~~~~Present~~~~~ “Luna? Luna Eclipse?” Looking up from my seat I notice two officers standing in front of me, and thankfully one of them is Shining Armor. While I never really talked to him a lot, the fact he is here does comfort me a little. “I need you to make a statement about what happened tonight. I’m also going to need to talk to the girls who were involved.” Once he has a pad of paper ready I recount the events of what happened, and the contact made by that lawyer, Svengallop. Looking over I notice the other officer is questioning Chrysalis and writing down her statement as well. At certain points Shining has asked questions, either to clarify a particular part or to try and catch me in a lie, I’m not sure. How long the questioning takes, I am not completely sure as I replay the part where Moonshade fell to the ground. I don’t know if it was my imagination or not, but as her head makes contact with the cement I swear I can hear a horrible, sickening crunch. Thankfully the doctor’s voice as he enters the room breaks me out of my thoughts, which I guess is a good thing, or else I could be swirling a very dangerous mental drain. “Your daughter is waking up. She’ll be alright, just some bruises and a mild concussion. You should be able to take her home in a few more hours.” “Luna? I heard about… what happened. Is she... alright?” Joining us is a winded and distressed Posey, holding a folder in her left hand as she barges through the door. “Physically, she is, a few bruises and a minor concussion. As for mentally, I don’t know. I… did that lawyer have any actual merit? Could they… can they actually take her and Lily away?” Please don’t let it be true, please don’t let them take the girls. A tender arm wraps around my shoulders and draws me in for an undeserved, comforting hug. “No, with them being under investigation all of the children under their care have been removed and given to other agencies.” “W- what abo-” “Hush love. I looked into it, and no such court orders have been issued from the Baltimare courts. And I don’t want to hear any more of your self blame. Did you make a mistake, yes. You allowed yourself to get hooked on drugs back then, but it wasn’t your fault, it was that bastard you were dating back then. You can’t change the past, only give her a better future.” As she holds me close I can’t hold the dam together any longer and tears begin to flow endlessly onto Chrys’ shoulder. Vaguely I am aware of others joining in with the hug as well, only then remembering that we are not alone. Taking my free arm I try to wrap it around as many of the girls as I can while I unleash all the pent up fear and and anger of the past who knows how many hours. The exhaustion and other emotions start taking a toll on me, and within moments I’m blacking out. “So Luna, do you like what we’ve done with your daughter?” A familiar voice wakes me up, and standing there, next to Moonshade is a man hidden in the shadows, but somehow, I can recognize the voice, but not place it. My gaze turns to Moonshade and what I see horrifies me. Her eyes are empty and her facial expression is completely neutral. Most of her body is hidden in the shadows as well, so I can’t see what she is wearing, if anything at all. Overall she has a look of someone who has been broken and shattered beyond repair. Disgusted by the sight I try to get up, only to realize I’m chained down tightly on a bed. My arms are held together and above my head while my legs are parted till they are bound to the bed posts at the foot of the bed. The second realization I have is that I am completely naked, and what is worse is that Moonshade has no reactions what so ever to my nakedness. Turning my head away I take in the rest of the room. Fortunately most of it is also covered in deep shadows, except for a point where Lily is hanging from I guess the ceiling. Again, the only thing I can see is her head, which is currently hanging and tears streaking down to the unseen floor. Her body shakes with silent sniffles and sobs, breaking my heart as I witness her despair. “Like what you see? You know, I have clients who enjoy a mother and daughter sharing their love.” With a chuckle he looks at Moonshade and kisses her before turning to face me. “Now, show your mom how much you truly love her.” “Moon! Don’t listen to him! STOP!” Unable to do anything I watch in horror as my daughter approaches me with that same blank stare and a wobbly gait. As she crawls onto the bed I close my eyes as my muscles tense. “NOO!” “LUNA! What happened?” Sitting upright on the couch I was lying on I look around frantically, perspiration beading out of every pore in my skin, some of the drops mingling with the tears sliding down my face. My heart feels like it’s imitating a jackhammer with how fast it is beating. Disoriented, I try to scoot away from the hazy figure looming above me. “Luna, it’s okay, you’re safe. What happened?” I… Celestia? W- where am I? As my vision clears slowly I realize I’m in the waiting room, surrounded by Celestia, Sunset and a team of nurses. W- where is Chrysalis and the Crusaders? Was that- it felt too real to be a dream. As I calm down a little I spot Moonshade, who is in a wheelchair and pushed to a corner, her expression one of horror as she stares at me. “I… I had a nightmare, a bad one. I… I don’t want to talk about it, at least, not here.” My gaze falls immediately to the floor, not wanting to look at my daughter just yet, afraid I’d see that horrible shell she was turned into. After giving me some time to calm down, the process to get Moonshade released goes by pretty quickly and the trip from the building to Celestia’s vehicle is a blur, drowned out by that horrible image I just had. “Sister, I know you don’t want to talk about it, but please, what happened that freaked you out in there?” The question I have been expecting, and dreading, comes the second all the doors are closed and the vehicle started, but we have yet to move. Unfortunately for me, I’m stuck in the back seat with the child proof doors. “Not… not in front of Moonshade, please. I promise I’ll talk to the counselor about it when we see him.” “That is when, next week? End of next week?” With a worried sigh my older sister pulls out and takes us home. It takes me a moment but I realize she is taking the long way. This ain’t good, hate when she does this. “We’ll talk when we get home, but I’m not going to let this fester for that long. You remember what happened last time you let something bother you for a period of time.” “O- okay, Tia. And yes, I do remember what happened-” It happened just after I hit you, killing your unborn baby and led to so, so many more mistakes. How you were able to pull me out of that downward spiral, I have no idea. Just like I have no idea how, or if, I’ll ever be able to repay you. The rest of the drive is uneventful and silent as both myself and Moonshade are lost in our own thoughts, and it takes the jerk of the vehicle coming to a stop and the engine being shut down to snap me out of my swirling cloud of negativity. Moonshade heads immediately to her room, Lily and Sunset following her to offer comfort. Celestia takes my shoulder and leads me to her inner sanctum, the only room in the house I’ve rarely intruded. An onyx arm wraps around my shoulders, but before it has a chance to settle it is brushed off, and I manage to look up long enough to see Celestia shake her head sadly. Once we are inside her room and the door is closed I finally manage to look up and examine my older sister’s room. Not surprising it is decorated in white, yellow and gold, I guess it’s supposed to be a solar theme judging by the stylized sun on the comforter. The furniture is expensive looking, but simple in design and painted white with gold trim and highlights. A large flat screen tv hangs on the wall opposite the memory foam bed. “So, Luna. What was it that freaked you out so badly in the hospital?” The question halts my exploration and I focus on Celestia while sitting heavily on the mattress. “I… I… please don’t think I’m sick or a pervert, sis,” Here it goes. With a deep breath I begin to tell her. “I… the dream I had was horrible. I was… I woke up bound and… naked to a bed, a shadowy figure standing at the foot of the bed with… Moonshade.” I really, really don’t want to see that again. I don’t even want to think of it. “What was going on, Lulu?” How she manages to sound like mom, I have no idea, but her tone of voice and posture soothe me enough and is so full of…. I have no idea how to describe it, but I can’t not tell her. “S- she was… I guess she was… naked, but shadows hid all but her head and shoulders. She had this… look, like she was… not really alive. Her eyes were dead, like a doll.” I didn’t notice it, but Tia has inched close enough to me as I talked that it takes me by surprise as she hugs me, the emotional dam weakening to the point of threatening to break. “Lily, she was… she was chained to a wall. Again I… I couldn’t see much besides her head and shoulders, but just by how she hung there, I could guess she was broken as well.” Something about the voice, I have no idea why but it sounds vaguely familiar as I recall what he said. Shivering in fear I curl up by bringing my knees up, in response my older sister wraps me up in a comforting hug. “I… I don’t know who he was, but… his voice sounded familiar. He… he told… he was going to have Moon… he wanted her to-” Unable to say the rest I twist in her arms and hug Tia tightly while she rocks me in her arms. “It’s alright, Lulu, you’re safe, Moonshade is safe and so is Lily. Nobody is going to harm them or take them away. Posey, Discord and Chrysalis will see that they don’t.” “Mom! Door!” Sunset’s voice interrupts the two of us, and with a sigh Celestia gets up first and head down the stairs, which I followed a couple minutes later. Standing there in the doorway are four officers, one of them is Shining Armor, accompanied by an older man who is his partner. The other two officers are probably out of town, based on the difference of the badges and the color of the uniforms. Shining Armor and his partner have a blue shirt with black epaulettes, dark grey pants, a silver shield shaped as a star and shiny dress shoes. The other two officers are in a pure black uniform, tactical style pants and combat boots with a gold shield that is more oval shaped. One of them, a woman speaks first. “Are you Luna Eclipse? I’m Sergeant Star Fire, this is Crimson storm and we are from Baltimare P.D. We would have been here sooner, but we had some things come up. Is it a good time to talk to Moonshade? It is pertinent to a case regarding her latest foster parents.”
