While having lunch a certain question comes up about how most of the evil ponies they've fought have been Unicorns. So is it just coincidence or is there a darker nature to uniorns that no one has thought of before?

Just a short one-shot I came up with after watching No Second Prances as this idea hit me.

So...Are Unicorns Evil?

So…Are Unicorns Evil?

Twilight was in her dining room with all her friends, currently they were all having lunch together, it wasn’t a special occasion or anything, they all just wanted to have a good time together. Applejack brought with her some apple style foods of course, Rarity brought desert, Fluttershy brought with her some nice salads, Rainbow some drinks. Everypony brought something to the table and they were all enjoying it.

Everything was going well that is until Starlight Glimmer noticed something odd, she noticed Dash looking at her and looked to be in thought about something.

At first the mare tried to ignore it but Rainbow kept looking at her, was there something on her face? She tried to make a quick check without anypony noticing but she didn’t feel anything on her face. She didn’t think her mane was messed up at least not the last time she saw her reflection, so what was it?

Eventually she had enough and had to ask so she looked right at Rainbow Dash and asked.

“Is there something wrong?”

“Huh? Oh no nothing,” Dash said quickly not looking at her now.

Glimmer’s eyes narrowed a bit knowing that it wasn’t just ‘nothing’, she tried thinking what it could be. After not knowing who the Wonderbolts were, Rainbow had given her a very in-depth and lengthy story behind that team so it couldn’t be that. She hadn’t used magic in any way to get on her bad side, she was still trying to make it up to Applejack and poor Big Mac.

“No seriously, you keep looking at me and you have to be thinking of something.” She spoke up and now more attention was being focused on them by the others.

“Look it’s nothing, just a silly thought came to me is all,” Dash shrugged.

“Silly thought?” AJ asked who was sitting next to the rainbow colored pony. “Well that wouldn’t be a first.”

“Hey!” Dash replied back.

“Oh come now darling,” Rarity spoke up. “It can’t be all bad although what in the world it could do with Starlight?”

Rainbow looked around to see everypony was now looking at her. She sighed as she shrugged. “Well it just kind of hit me just now.”

“What hit you, did you fly into something again?” Pinkie asked her.

“What? No! Look,” Rainbow took a breath. “It just kind of hit me that out of every really bad or even evil ponies we’ve come across have
usually been a unicorn.”

There was a silent so thick at the table you could hear a pin drop.

“Dash!” Twilight shouted out. “You know how that sounds?”

“Sounds kind of racist.” AJ said giving Rainbow a sideways look.

“What!? No that’s not what I mean,” Rainbow said frantically. “Look let’s go over the major threats that were just ponies we’ve dealt with. The only one that I can see that wasn’t a unicorn was Nightmare Moon, but look at all the others.”

The others thought about all their adventures and slowly they started to think on all the ponies that they had to deal with.

“Ya just mean the really bad ones right?” AJ asked slowly.

Rainbow nodded. “Yeah the worst ones we have to deal with, they don’t have to be evil anymore like Starlight or Trixie but those two are the first examples I thought of.”

“I was kind of evil there for awhile,” Starlight had to admit as it wasn’t like anyone didn’t know of her past. Enslaving a village and then nearly (even if it wasn’t on purpose) destroyed their world through time travel was kind of evil. “But what exactly did Trixie do?”

Starlight looked around the table, “Everypony says she did something and even she said she had a past so what exactly did she do?”

“She never said?” Fluttershy asked.

Starlight shook her head, “We never got around to it.”

Everyone looked at each other, they weren’t sure if it was their place to say but sooner or later she was bound to hear the story so maybe it was best that she heard it from them. Twilight sighed as she decided to be the one to break it to her.

“She…kind of took over Ponyville with powerful dark magic.” Twilight explained.

“Oh…” Starlight blinked it was oddly very close sounding to what she had done.

“Not to mention forcing everypony to do what she said.” Rarity spoke up.

“And she took away my mouth!” Pinkie spoke up happily. “I was glad to get it back, I was really hungry and thirsty by the time I got it back.”

“Not to mention kickin’ Twi out of town.” AJ put in.

“Okay how did she do all that?” Starlight Glimmer asked next.

“She used some kind of evil amulet,” Rainbow said with a shrug.

“Evil soul sucking amulet,” Glimmer muttered to herself as now Trixie’s words were now make some kind of sense.

“But it wasn’t entirely her fault,” Twilight jumped in quickly seeing where this was going. Trixie had come a long way and after how she had treated the mare, Twilight felt she should come to her defense. “The alicorn amulet twisted the user, she had no real control when she put it on. It fed and encouraged all her darker desires.”

Rainbow thought about something, “So who made that thing anyway?”

That caught everyone off guard, all except Twilight whose ears pulled back. Everyone saw her reaction and looked at her.

“Um…after that incident and I reported it, Princess Celestia got back to me about the amulet.” Twilight told them. She didn’t say anything at first as she shrunk down in her seat. “It was made by this dark wizard named Black Thorn, he was obsessed with power and made it to try and take over Equestria.”

“A wizard…a unicorn right?” Rainbow Dash grinned knowing now why Twilight looked like she didn’t want to talk about this.

“Yes…” Twilight spoke up.

“Sombra!” Spike suddenly said taking everyone by surprise. “He was a unicorn too.”

“Wait he was?” Glimmer asked looking at him. “I thought you said he was a shadow when you told me the story back in the Crystal Empire.”

“He was but originally he was a unicorn,” Spike told her. “He still looked mostly like he did I guess, apparently after the Princesses defeated him he became some kind of ‘shadow pony’ kind of thing. Although he was a little odd looking.”

“Odd looking how?” Glimmer asked.

“Well it was mainly his horn, you girls know how a unicorn’s horn has this spiral kind of shape to it?” He looked to see Rarity, Glimmer and

Twilight nodded. “Well this was all straight and pointed, more like a blade on his head than a horn.”

Rarity shuddered, “That’s sounds absolutely garish.”

“Okay so that’s Starlight, Trixie, Sombra and that guy that made the alicorn amulet,” Rainbow counted off. “We didn’t miss anypony did we?”
Mostly everyone else couldn’t think of someone but once again Twilight slumped a little lower before she spoke up.

“Sunset Shimmer,” Twilight spoke up.

“Oh right the one that stole your crown into that other universe,” Rainbow suddenly remembered.

“Okay I’ve heard that name a couple of times but what do you mean by other universe?” Starlight Glimmer looked at Twilight.

“Well she’s a pony that was once Princess Celestia’s student like myself but she kind of…” Twilight trailed off trying a nice way of softening the blow.

“Went mad with power?” Pinkie asked happily.

“I was going to say obsessed with power,” Twilight said flatly. “There’s a mirror now in my castle that she used to go into another world.”

“Wait is it a really big one with a lot of strange science stuff and a book above it inside of said machine?” Glimmer suddenly asked remembering seeing that strange thing in her wonderings in the castle.

“That’s the one,” Rarity told her. “Twilight put all that stuff there to keep the portal open whenever the book is in place now instead of once every while.”

“Okay so what did this Shimmer do other then just steal Twilight’s crown, wait you have a crown?” Glimmer looked at the Princess. “I don’t remember you ever wearing one.”

“It was before we met ya,” AJ told their new friend. “It was one of tha elements o’ harmony but we all had ta giv’em up awhile back.”

“Yes but when she had it, she planned on using it to turn the humans in the other world into a zombie army to invade and take over Equestria.” Twilight told her.

“Wait what’s a ‘human’?” Glimmer asked.

“Long story,” Rainbow said.

“They’re this species that exists on the other side of the mirror,” Pinkine quickly became to recap for her. “Apparently there’s a double of everypony here over there only they’re two legged, tall creatures with no hooves or fur.”

“Uh…okay maybe not so long,” Rainbow shrugged.

“Anyways Sunset learned her lesson and like you is learning the magic of friendship while over there.” Twilight explained.

Starlight thought about it, it did sound like she would have something in common with this mare. Maybe at some point she could have Twilight introduce them but first was this whole issue with unicorns that Rainbow brought up. She had to admit, it seemed like when unicorns went bad, they really went bad. She didn’t help any matters either with her own actions looking back on it all.

“Oh-oh-oh!” Pinkie raised a hoof like she was in class. “I just remembered, Rarity kind of went a little evil when she had that book Spike gave her.”

Rarity winced remembering that book and how she remade much of the town with all that power. “Ah yes, thanks for reminding me about that.” She said in a not too pleased voice.

“No problem,” Pinkie said happily.

“But she wasn’t in complete control of that,” Fluttershy went to her friend’s defense. “It was like with Trixie and the amulet.”

“That’s right, Rarity couldn’t be completely be held responsible for her actions,” Twilight agreed.

“You know you nearly kind of went evil there for a bit too,” Rainbow pointed at Twilight.

“What!? When!?” The princess demanded.

“Remember when you went a little crazy and put that spell on that doll?” the Pegasus asked her. “You weren’t under any spell during that.”
Twilight’s face contorted in a mix of emotions, she did remember that. It hadn’t been one of her proudest moments.

“Spell on a doll?” Glimmer asked looking at Twilight wondering just what she did.

“Long story,” Twilight said quickly trying to think of a way to avoid telling that particular embarrassing story. Then she suddenly got an idea.
“Oh I know!”

She suddenly disappeared in a teleportation only to come back quickly the same way with a scroll and ink quill with her. “If anyone would know if there is any kind of coloration between unicorns and them going, well evil, then Princess Celestia would know. She’s been around long enough to most likely seen all kinds of evils and if there were Pegasi or Earth Ponies going evil she would have had to deal with it.”

“Well that makes sense,” Rarity admitted. Before they came along, Celestia had to have dealt with all the problems herself since there weren’t any stories of world saving ponies she could ever remember, at least not that weren’t works of fiction.

Twilight quickly wrote down a quick letter and passed it on to Spike.

“One letter by dragon on the way,” He cheerfully said as his green flame engulfed the letter sending it on its way.

There was a pause in the conversation at that moment as they all just kind of looked at each other.

“So, are we just waiting for a reply?” Fluttershy asked.

“I guess we could go around and see how everyone’s week is going to pass the time?” Rainbow said with a shrug. With nothing better to do they did just that, it was a pretty basic week, nothing too major was going on with them. A few had plans for a few events coming up but before they could finish a scroll magically transported itself out of Spike’s mouth.

“Okay now let’s get down to the heart of this,” Twilight unrolled the scroll as she started reading but her eyes widened a bit as her jaw dropped.

“Uh…bad news?” AJ asked.

“Well, here’s what she says.” Twilight began reading the letter.

“I’m not sure what brought on this question Twilight but to tell you the truth there has always been a problem with powerful unicorns in Equestrian history.”

“Wait what!?” Glimmer and Rarity said at once while the others looked on surprised.

“It’s what she says,” Twilight told them getting back to the letter. “You see I noticed after a few centuries of ruling that there was a correlation between how powerful a unicorn was and their ability to fall to the darker arts. It would see that the more power they have, the more susceptible they are to abusing that power or becoming drunk with that power.”

“Okay I think I can see her point there,” Glimmer had to admit that she was pretty powerful for your average unicorn and she had used her power to control the world around her and bend it all to her will.

Twilight read on, “It’s the main reason why I created my Gifted School for Unicorns. I decided to make a place where all the most gifted unicorns could go to learn, a place where they would know not just how to use magic but when to use it and how to use it responsibly. Although there have been some failures here and there for the most part I have noticed a drastic drop in the misuse of magic since the school’s founding.”

“I hope this goes to answering your question, Princess Celestia.” Twilight finished as they all looked around.

“Huh, I never really thought about why she started that school until now,” Spike thought out loud.

By this point, the three magic users in the room were deep in thought. Rarity had to admit that when she got all that power from that book she abused it if she was totally honest, she wasn’t sure how much of what she had done had been because of the power of the book over her and what might have been just herself drunk on power.

Twilight looked back at her time at the school, remembering all the lessons taught on the morals of magic and the ethical use of it, it now made so much more sense to her why those classes were mandatory. Glimmer too was thinking how without any kind of moral support she had automatically used her magic to control others. If she had gone to the Gifted School for Unicorns would she have learned to not abuse her magic?

There was a dead silence for a moment until Pinkie decided to break it.

“So…are unicorns evil?” She asked innocently enough. “You know when they get enough power that is?”

“Well not always,” Twilight said slowly looking at Rarity and Glimmer.

“But apparently with enough power we might not always have the best judgment,” Rarity sighed.

“Look I’m sorry I brought this all up,” Rainbow told them, “it was just a stupid thought that I couldn’t get rid of, I’m kind of regretting bringing it up.”

“Maybe we should talk about something else then?” Fluttershy offered.

They all agreed although they weren’t sure where to start, Starlight Glimmer decided that maybe they could change it to a more light hearted tone. She leaned over at her spot towards Twilight with the largest grin she had on.

“So, what’s this story about you putting a spell on a doll?” Glimmer asked her smiling.

Twilight gave an exasperated sigh as she hung her head as he looked at her. “Are you sure you’re not still evil?”
