> Sonata's Food Trouble > by Mystical Rainboom > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- > If you give a siren a pancake... > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Miss Cheerilee had to substitute the class and felt a bit of excitement and fear. She loved all of her students, but a blue ponytail signaled trouble. The Dazzlings were calm during the last few months, but Sonata was always a wild card. Regardless of the students, today was the last day for everybody to master making pancakes. All Miss Cheerilee had to do was tell them and everyone would be off. With a card in her hands, she showed the picture of the breakfast foods, pancakes, bacon, and eggs, and said nothing more. Because Sonata had a reputation for mischief, everyone kept a close eye on her. The table next to her, Pinkie and Rarity, tried to prepare themselves. "I've never been so scared for my hair in my life." Rarity whimpered, behind Pinkie. "What about the time Sweetie Belle and her friends played paintball?" Pinkie smiled and asked. "It's a close call." Rarity shivered. "Don't worry, Rarity." Sunset Shimmer calmed her down. "Sonata is just a little clumsy. If she was really evil, then Derpy might be evil too." Pinkie gasped. "I knew it." She signaled she was watching Derpy, who just looked confused Sunset facepalmed, but Rarity was okay. Sonata opened the book and gathered ingredients for the dish. She put two fresh and shelled eggs in the bowl and added milk. She was as gentle as a mother to her daughter. Sunset caught a glance and panicked. "Sonata, don't-! Too late... Wham! Wham! Wham! Wham! Sonata seemed as brutal as a stomping rhino. She splattered egg and milk everywhere and made everyone near her covered in milk. Specifically, Rainbow Dash, who was turning red. "Don't do it, Rainbow." Applejack held her back. "Fine." Rainbow pouted. The sirens always had a plan that could seem obvious, but with Sonata it was hard to tell. Pinkie Pie guarded Rarity and tried to catch the milk in her mouth. Sunset rushed over and told Sonata to crack them first and try to be gentle. Sonata shrugged and read on. "Add to the flour mix?" She read out loud. "Oh! I've got this one!" She grabbed a big bag of powder and poured it into the bowl. Pinkien Pie sniffed the air. She took one look and gasped. "Sonata, that's sugar!" "Sugar, spice, and everything twice." Sonata smiled. Sonata managed to grab flour too. She added even more of it. She grabbed the wooden spoon and jabbed it in to stir. The sugar was making it sticky, so she put one hand on the bowl and tried to put a bit of distance from it. Immediately, the bowl snapped out of her grasp and rocketed towards Applejack and Rainbow. "Duck!" Rainbow shouted. She knocked Applejack out of the way, but the bowl slammed into an unaware boy. "My nose!" The boy was now bleeding and was excused to go see Nurse Redheart. "Every student makes a mistake. Nobody is perfect." Miss Cheerilee said in an exasperating tone. She couldn't evict Sonata, because according to county rules "anyone can cook." Rainbow and Applejack were still on the floor. They blushed in their position and moved. "Maybe it would help if someone went to help her out." Applejack smiled. "Totally. She just needs a little guidance." Rainbow smiled back. The two smiled at each other for twenty seconds. "Rock, Paper, Scissors..." They said simultaneously. Sunset was laughing at the pair's game. "Okay. I'll take this one." She walked over and put a hand on Sonata's stirring hand. "Hey, Sonata." Sunset smiled. "Hi Sunrise Simmer." Sonata beamed and tried to stir. "Sunset Shimmer." She corrected. "But it's only 1:00." Sonata looked puzzled. Sunset just assumed she never learned her name. She smiled a bit more. "Wanna work together?" "Sure." Sonata lost the spoon as it flew away and broke a window. Sunset managed to pull a miracle and got Sonata on the right track. She made the sticky mess into a nice smooth bowl of batter. Sonata took notice and went to grab the butter. Sonata squeezed it and it bounced away. She tried to catch it, but she ran into almost every obstacle. She knocked Rainbow into Applejack again, accidentally slipped and flipped a pan sending bacon over Rarity's panicked head and finally caught it, while dripping the butter on Sunset's apron. Aside from Sonata trying to get Applejack to split into slices, Sonata was kind of making progress. Sunset grabbed a handful of blueberries and tried to add them to the mix, but Sonata had a full mouth and a shrug. Sonata went to grab a banana and dropped the peel. The banana landed right where Sunset wanted it. Sonata grabbed the vegetable oil, but Sunset made sure not a single flame was nearby. Sonata smiled as she made progress. She heated the pan and poured it all in. She then had to flip the pancakes. Sunset trusted her to do this alone. Sonata flipped the pancakes and they flew for at least ten seconds. Pinkie tried to catch one, but she missed and it flew and managed to mess up Rarity's hair and makeup. "Oh no! My beautiful face." Rarity was saddened, but as she took a bite of the pancake with edible makeup she kind of smiled. She gagged about the pancake taste, but at least she could use the make up for food. Rainbow was heated up by the burns of hot batter on her arm. Applejack wanted to help, but she had to dodge it herself. "I have the worst aim." Sonata smacked herself. "I'll say I didn't get a single bite!" Pinkie pouted. "Don't worry it could've been worse." Sunset told Sonata. Sonata puffed her face and walked out without another word. Sunset frowned to herself. "Don't feel bad, Sunny." Applejack was pouring water on a burning Rainbow Dash. "She could've done worse." "Yeah, but she'll still get a D-. I hope she doesn't take it too hard." Pinkie bounced next to her. "Don't worry not everyone can bake on their first try." They all looked at the mess again. "Maybe she'll get C-" Pinkie chuckled nervously. The next day after class "Sonata Dusk, you get an A+" The teacher passed her a paper. "No way!" Rainbow Dash was astounded. Sonata made a dish so amazing she got an A+, despite not even knowing to crack eggs. She smiled with the paper on her chest. "This makes no sense. It's not like it's impossible, but..." Rarity was confused. "Nice job, Sonata." Sunset was happy for her. "But how did you get so good?" "A siren never reveals her secrets." Sonata whispered in her ear. "Internet. I got it right on my second try." "So what did you do with all of the pancakes you made? Were they delicious?" Pinkie asked. "I wouldn't know. Aria likes pancakes a lot and Adagio wouldn't let me make anymore." Sonata answered. "Well congrats. Sorry about thinking you were up to something." Rainbow Dash scratched her head. "No hard feelings." Sonata smiled. She wrapped Sunset Shimmer in a big hug. "Thanks Sunny Side up!" "Sunset- whatever." She smiled and continued to hug back. She walked away into the hall and was about to leave the school. "Wait, Sonata school's not over yet." Sunset went after her.
