> Conversion Bureau: A Girl's Wish > by Lux > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- > A Pegasus in the Park > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Conversion Bureau A Girl's Wish By Lux Chapter One – A Pegasus in the Park “Alright Penny,” the child’s mother said lovingly to her, “I’ll be here on the bench. Please be safe and check back with me, OK?” The girl turned towards her mother and with a smile said, “OK, mommy”. Penny was about eight years old with beautiful short blonde hair and sparkling blue eyes. She always seemed full of energy and had a smile that lit up the room and brightened up the saddest of times. She was almost ready to leave when she turned around and ran back to her mother. “Oh, I almost forgot Peggy!” Peggy was the name of her pink Pegasus plush with a white mane and tail. Penny would always carry it with her wherever she would go. She would even sleep with it every night. To her Peggy wasn’t just a thing of comfort or a companion. This plush creature was what she truly wished to be. Taking the soft creature in her hand, she turned and ran back towards the playground. She passed by the playground equipment and headed towards the open expanse of grass that was dotted by a few trees. Ever since she could walk, Penny was more of a fan of this area than the playground. Here she could run, jump, dance, and just let her imagination run wild. She got about halfway across the grassy plain when she suddenly stopped. Something caught her mind, only it wasn’t around her, but flying above her. As she watched she at first thought the creature in the sky was a bird. After all it did have wings. Then she realized that it couldn’t be a bird as it was way too big and that its body looked like a horse. Penny looked at the creature, then at Peggy, then back at the creature. She then realized that the creature she was watching was a living breathing Pegasus! The Pegasus, seeing the girl looking up at her, felt that she should go down and at least meet her. She curved back around and prepared to land. Unfortunately her landing was not as smooth as she wanted it to be and she ended up crashing into the ground, skidding a few feet before coming to a stop just before where Penny was standing. “Oh are you OK?” Penny said as she ran to the Pegasus. “Yeah, I’m OK,” she said as she got up, “I need to work on those landings. Anyway, I’m Swift Wing, but you can call me Swift. What’s your name?” “I’m Penny, nice to meet you! You’re a great flyer.” “Thanks,” the Pegasus said. “I’m still getting used to flying. It’s trickier than it looks.” “Did you just learn to fly?” Penny said as she tried to understand what she said. “Well, actually, I wasn’t born a Pegasus. I used to be a girl like you.” Penny was amazed about what she heard. It sounded, like something out of a fairytale her parents read to her in bed. “How did you become a Pegasus?” “Well, I don’t remember much of that day. I remember my parents took me to this place. It was kind of like a hospital. I remember going into a room and drinking some purple stuff. Then I fall asleep, and when I woke up, I was a Pegasus. And actually my mommy became a Pegasus too and my dad became a unicorn.” “Did it hurt or anything?” Penny asked, as she hated when she had to get a shot at the doctor’s office. “Nah, it didn’t hurt. I did feel a little strange waking up and getting used to the new me though.” “What’s it like to fly? I always wanted to know.” “Oh it’s amazing! I feel so free being able to go anywhere. Sure it took time learning how to fly, but I’m so happy that I can.” “So um… Swift, do you want to play?” “Sure!” With that the human and the Pegasus took off into the field, playing games and letting their imagination run wild. To them, they were not two separate creatures. They were just kids having fun. Yet within Penny’s mind a tiny flame of inspiration grew as she wondered how a person could become a Pegasus. She was always a fan of that creature and wondered what it would be like to fly. After what seemed like an eternity, Penny heard the familiar call of her mother, signaling the end of their time there, and the end of playing with Swift Wing. “That’s my mom calling. Looks like I have to go.” “Ok then,” Swift said as she hugged her, “I guess I’ll see you here again hopefully.” “You mean, you want to play with me again?” “Sure! We’re friends right?” “Right!” Penny said enthusiastically, “so I’ll see you later!” With that Penny walked across the field, back to her mother and the world she knew. Yet something happened that day that changed her outlook and purpose in life. In meeting her new friends, she saw what she wanted to become. > A Dinner Conversation > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Conversion Bureau A Girl's Wish By Lux Chapter Two – A Dinner Conversation That evening, Penny and her parents took part in the family routine of sitting down together for dinner. Ever since she was a child this was always what happened during the evenings. In fact the only time she ever knew that this didn’t happen was once she got the flu and had to stay in bed. That was a few years ago, yet the memory of not being able to have dinner was still clear in her mind. The time was very clockwork. Penny would be either doing her homework at the kitchen table or watching a cartoon on the television while her mom would be preparing the meal for the evening. Then promptly at six her father would arrive and immediately the three would have dinner. It was not only a time for eating but also a time for sharing in each other’s lives. To Penny it was like story time, except that they were the characters. “So how was your day at the park?” her father asked while helping himself to some peas. “Oh it was really fun!” Penny said, “and I met a new friend, Swift.” “Who’s Swift, honey?” her mom asked. “Oh she’s really nice! And she’s a Pegasus which is cool because I like them.” Penny’s mom and dad looked at each other. They didn’t know what to think of what their daughter said. Both knew that Penny had an active imagination, and that combined with her love of pegasai, it all could just be Penny playing with an imaginary friend. On the other hand, the two knew there were pegasai, real ones, out there as well as unicorns and earth ponies as well. They had watched the news about how the island nation of Equestria merged with Earth. They had heard about how there were places called Conversion Bureaus where humans could go and become ponies. Yet even though they knew all of this, they kept it away from Penny. It wasn’t that they were ashamed or afraid of ponies, but they felt that they should let Penny stay in her blissful state for a while, free of the complex life that existed beyond her home, school, and park. “So, you met a Pegasus friend in the park?” his father said, “Maybe you should invite her over. Then we could meet her too.” “That sounds great daddy!” Penny said, “I’ll ask her when I go back to the park.” “Ok honey,” her mother said, “we’ll be going back there in a few days. Now enjoy your dinner.” Penny ate her food with a smile, happy that her parents were OK with her new friend. Her parents were interested in seeing this new pony that Penny had met at the park. That night, Penny dreamed. It was the same dream she had for almost a year, only this time it was slightly different. She dreamed that she was a Pegasus, the same color as Peggy. She was flying through a clear sky, feeling happy and free. Then something new entered her dream - or someone new to be exact. Her new friend, Swift, appeared. “Hey there, Penny! Wanna race?” With that, she flew after her friend into the horizon. > Play Date > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Conversion Bureau A Girl's Wish By Lux Chapter Three – Play Date Penny waited in anticipation for the day that she could return to the playground with her mother. This time it wasn’t the park that drew her, but instead it was meeting Swift Wind. Her new friend, after all, was basically Penny’s dreams being manifested. Instead of just imagining playing with a Pegasus, she was actually meeting one! “OK, Penny,” her mother said, “have fun. And if your friend is here you can invite her over.” “OK, mom,” Penny said as she ran off through the playground area. Once in the field, she first looked around, thinking that Swift had already landed and was waiting for her. After not seeing her friend there, Penny searched the skies, hoping to see her soaring overhead. Suddenly she saw something fly overhead and her heart leapt in excitement, but it was quickly subdued as she realized it was just some other Pegasus pony flying over the park. Penny wondered why Swift wasn’t showing up. Maybe her parents couldn’t bring her today? Whatever the reason, Penny felt sad not seeing her friend. She had so much that she wanted to say, so much that she wanted to do, and she especially wanted to invite Swift Wing over to play. Penny was about to go back to her mother when she heard a familiar voice behind her. “Hi Penny!” Swift said, “Sorry I was late.” “Swift!” Penny squealed with delight as she hugged the Pegasus, almost knocking her off her hooves. “Yep. That’s me!” the pony said with a smile. “Oh, I’m so glad you came! I talked with my parents and they said it’s OK for you to come by the house. That is, if you want to.” “Of course I want to!” Swift said. “Mom said Saturday is a good day. Is that OK for you?” “Saturday’s fine I think,” Swift said, “I’ll have to check with my parents, but I think they’ll say it’s OK.” “Great!” Penny said. “Alright then!” Swift said, “let’s play!” The two played for what seemed like hours. It was just like the first time they met. At last, just when they thought they could play forever, Penny heard her mom calling again from the same familiar bench. “It looks like you have to go.” Swift said sadly. “Wait! Before I have to go, I want you to meet my mom.” “Ok then.” the Pegasus said, hovering along a few feet in the air as she followed Penny to her mother. Penny’s mother saw her daughter approaching, with a Pegasus pony in tow. Part of her was shocked that Penny had indeed found a Pegasus friend, but she was happy to meet this new friend. “Hi mom!” Penny said, “This is my friend Swift Wing! Swift, this is my mom.” “Nice to meet you Penny’s mom!” Swift said. “Well it’s nice to meet you too, Swift. Penny told you that you can come over, right?” “Yes. She said Saturday.” “Well then, we all look forward to meeting you there.” Ok then,” Swift said, “I’ll see you there.” The Pegasus was about to turn and fly off when she stopped and came back to the two. “Oh almost forgot. Here Penny, have this.” Swift gave the child what looked like a watch except it had no clock face but instead a blinking red light on the side and a strange display with a cross-hair pattern and a blinking light. “This is what my dad calls a homing watch,” Swift explained, “It’ll tell me where you are since I have a watch just like it. And see that green dot? That’s me! The closer I am in the center, the closer I am to you.” “Wow Swift,” Penny said as she put it on her wrist, “thanks!” “You’re welcome. Well, I guess I’ll see you Saturday.” With that the Pegasus pony took flight and Penny and her mother returned home. Penny felt sad that she could only stay a short time with her friend. But there was one thing else that made her sad, although at the time she couldn’t figure out what it was. Yet her sadness was quickly replaced by her happy thoughts of seeing Swift again, this time at her house. > Smiles and Secrets > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Conversion Bureau A Girl's Wish By Lux Chapter 4 – Smiles and Secrets Penny couldn’t wait for Saturday to happen. Sure, it was only a few days that Penny had to wait for Swift Wind to show up, but to a little girl whose friendship towards her new Pegasus friend knew no limits, an hour seemed like an eternity. There was so much she wanted to say, so much she wanted to do and ask. She found herself unable to think of much else in the day except for meeting her Pegasus friend again. Finally that day arrived. Penny was so excited; she felt that if she had to wait any longer, she’d explode. She had her homing watch on and active, alerting Swift to her location. She then saw up in the air her Pegasus friend and leapt for joy. Swift circled the house a few times before landing across the street and then trotting over to her. “Sorry about that,” Swift said, “I had to find a place to land. Your house has lots of trees around it, and I kind of have trouble with them.” “What trouble?” Penny asked. “Well when I was first flying, I kind of wasn’t watching where I was going and I crashed into a tree.” Penny started giggling, but then realized what happened. “Oh, sorry for laughing at you. You weren’t hurt, were you?” “That’s OK,” Swift said as she put her foreleg around Penny’s shoulder, “You don’t have to be worried about laughing. It was a silly thing, and I wasn’t hurt or anything.” “Oh, alright,” Penny said as her mind was put to ease, “so, do you want to come in?” “Sure! Lead the way.” Penny led Swift into the house as she began to explain the different rooms. Part of it was because Penny didn’t know if a pony had a house like she did, but the other reason was that Penny did very much like her house. “And here’s the dining room where my parents and I eat, here’s the kitchen where mom makes the food, oh and here’s my parents!” “Hello Penny’s parents!” Swift said as she happily waved to them. “Hello again Swift.” Penny’s mother said, “Welcome to our house!” “It’s nice to finally meet you as well,” her dad chimed in, “Penny has been saying so many nice things about you, we wanted to meet her new friend.” “Thanks. Nice to meet both of you!” “Well, we’ll leave you two to go and play.” Penny mom’s said, “If you need anything, let us know.” “OK, mom!” Penny said. The girl thought about playing outside in the backyard. Yet just when she was about to recommend this to Swift, it started to pour. Penny then had to come up with another idea for having fun. Penny noticed the television in the living room. “Hey Swift, want to watch a movie?” “Sure,” Swift said. “Hey! Dad! Can we have popcorn? Swift, you want popcorn?” “Sure!” the Pegasus said. “I’ll get some for you two then!” her father said as he went into the kitchen. With two big bowls filled with popcorn and some movie about a fairytale princess playing, the two laughed and had fun together. Finally, as the credits rolled, the two searched for the next thing to do. “That was a great movie,” Swift said, “what’s next?” Penny thought for a moment and then an idea popped into her head. “Hey! Do you want to see my bedroom?” “OK,” Swift said as she followed Penny up the stairs and down the hall until the girl entered a room. Swift gazed in wonder at the bedroom. “So, what do you think?” Penny asked. It was clear that this room was designed with a little girl in mind. The walls were painted a bubblegum pink while the ceiling was left white. All of her furniture from the headboard of her bed to the little chair by her desk was painted white and had hearts either carved into them or heart shaped holes cut out of them. “I really like your room,” Swift said, “You must like pink and hearts.” “Oh yes,” Penny replied, “pink and white are my favorite colors, and I like things with hearts on them.” Swift then noticed something else that Penny liked. Her room was filled with a myriad of Pegasus items. There were pictures on the wall, stuffed animals on her bed, and figurines on the shelves. There was even a Pegasus themed lamp by her bed. “Wow! You really have a lot of Pegasus things here.” “Thanks, Swift. Actually, they’re more than just things I like.” “Really? How?” Penny then looked around the room as if she was making sure that no one was watching the two. “Um… Swift? I’ve been keeping your secret, you know, about how you became a pony. Can you keep a secret of mine?” “Sure Penny! That’s what friends do, right?” Swift said as she gave her a reassuring smile. “Thanks, Swift.” Penny said, “My secret is that I want to become a Pegasus. I love them so much! They are so pretty and strong, and they can fly. I always wanted to fly. Before I met you, I would talk to my Pegasus things. Then when I met you Swift and learned how you became a pony everything changed! You showed me that there was a way to become what I want to be.” “Well you’re welcome, but I really didn’t do anything. I just saw you at the park and wanted to say hello. But I’m glad that you want to be a Pegasus. Have you told your parents about it?” “Not yet,” Penny said, “I’m still thinking about how to tell them.” “Well if you need my help explaining to your mom and about becoming a Pegasus I can help.” “But you’d be telling your secret about how you became a pony, wouldn’t you?” “Well it’s not that big of a secret,” Swift replied, “and if it means helping you become a Pegasus, I’d be glad to do it!” With that the two friends hugged each other. Meanwhile, outside the door Penny’s mom was listening to the two talking to each other before quietly moving away and back down the hall a smile on her face. “I think that we should tell her tonight at supper,” her mom said to Penny’s father. “Maybe we should invite Swift to stay for that,” her dad replied, “I’m sure her will be excited about the news as much as Penny will.” “OK, I’ll ask,” her mom said as she returned to Penny’s door. She then gave a light knock so as not to disturb the two. “Come in,” Penny said, knowing it was either of her parents. “Penny, we’re going to be having dinner soon. Swift, do you want to join us?” “Sure, Penny’s mom!” Swift said. “Alright then,” her mom said, “I’ll be calling you two soon.” Penny's mom left the two as they giggled and laughed and played. Her mom knew that the announcement that was going to be made around the dinner was sure to bring the two friends even closer together. > A Dinner Time Surprise > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Conversion Bureau A Girl's Wish By Lux Chapter 5 – A Dinner Time Surprise A short time later, Penny sat at the dinner table with her parents and her friend Swift. The fourth chair, which had hardly been used by anyone, was now occupied by the Pegasus. “Swift, tonight we’re having chicken,” Penny’s mom said, “Is that OK for you?” “Well I don’t actually eat meat,” Swift said, “but I can definitely have the vegetables.” “OK then,” Penny's mom said as she handed Swift the salad bowl. The four then proceeded to have their dinner. Penny noticed that instead of the usual ritual of talking about their day as well as other things, her parents were very quiet. The two were looking at each other, as if they wanted to tell her something. Finally after a few minutes of awkward silence, her father spoke. “Penny, your mother and I wanted to ask you something.“ “What is it daddy?” Penny said curiously as she took a bite of her chicken. “Well, honey,” her mother said, “your father and I were talking and we know that you love your Pegasus things, and I can see that you are really good friends with Swift here. That’s one of the reasons why I wanted her to stay for dinner.” “Really? What’s going on?” Penny said as she looked over to her friend sitting next to her who shared an equally confused look on her face. "Well, honey, we were thinking about possibly going to the Conversion Bureau soon. You know what that place is, right?” Penny thought for a moment about the name of the place. Then, as if a light went on in her mind her face lit up, “Is that the place where people become ponies?” “Yes it is Penny,” her dad said. “So, does that mean that we’re going to become ponies?” Penny asked hardly being able to contain her excitement. “Yes, Penny, we will.” her father said. “We were thinking about it for about a month now, but after seeing your friend Swift here, well that just helped us to decide. Of course, we wanted to tell you before we decided to schedule a date for it to happen.” “So, Penny, are you interested?” her mom said. “Yes, I am!” she said without hesitation. “Now before we say yes to this for sure, Penny, there are a few rules that we as a family have to follow,” her father said. “We would have to move, and we couldn’t take anything with us, so you would have to give up what you have.” “Why couldn’t we stay in our house?” Penny asked slightly confused. “Well honey,” her mom tried to explain, “Those are the rules to becoming a pony. And this house wasn’t really built for ponies to live in. But don’t worry. We’ll have a new house to live in and you’ll get all new things.” “Can I still be friends with Swift?” Penny asked. “Sure you can!” Swift said, “Can she, Penny’s parents?” “Yes Penny,” her dad said, “you can still be friends with Swift.” “Can I be a Pegasus?” Penny asked. “Well, the ponies at the Conversion Bureau said that we can’t pick what type of pony we want to be,” her mother said, “It’s like how we can’t pick what color hair or eyes we have. Hopefully, however, when you become a pony, you can be a Pegasus.” Penny’s heart sank a little at the thought of being so close to becoming what she always wanted only to possibly not get it. But there was still hope, and in a child’s mind hope was all she needed. So, what do you think?” Penny’s father asked. “Would you still like to be a pony?” “Yes, I would love to become a pony! Oh Swift, I’m going to be like you soon.” With that the two started dancing as they squealed in delight, unable to hold back their excitement. Penny’s parents watched the two, their child’s happiness pushing aside any doubts or fears in their mind. > Meeting Swift's Parents > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Conversion Bureau A Girl's Wish By Lux Chapter 6 – Meeting Swift’s Parents The next day, Penny’s parents called the Conversion Bureau to schedule a time for the three to be converted. Penny was told that they would be going to the Bureau within two weeks, so they had a limited time to prepare. Penny was blissfully unaware of exactly what was needed to be done before conversion. In her mind all she knew was that on the day she and her parents would go to the place, and when they left the Bureau, they’d be ponies. The only thing Penny concerned herself about was whether she was going to be a Pegasus. Penny's parents helped to keep her blissfully unaware. Penny did know all things that were needed to be done before she and her parents could be converted. Her parents had to quit their jobs, sell their things, and convert their money to the currency of Equestria, which was small coins called 'bits'. They also had to move out of their house before their conversions. It was going to take a lot of time and effort, and both of Penny's parents thought that burdening their daughter with the details would be too much of a cost to her happiness. Right after announcing their plans to become ponies, Swift Wing visited the family a few days later for a play date with Penny. It was a perfect way for Penny to have fun before conversion, and her parents were able to take care of some things while the two played. It was clear that Penny was excited about becoming a pony as she began asking Swift several questions like an investigative journalist. “Do ponies only eat fruits and vegetables?” “Not really. I also eat breads and candy and cupcakes. Actually the only thing I can’t eat is meat.” “Do ponies wear clothes often?” “Not often. I only wear dresses and things like that for fancy parties.” “How do you hold things with your hooves?” “Well even though my hooves are tough, they are kind of flexible, like your feet I guess.” “Are there pony schools?” “Definitely! There’s even a flight school that teaches you how to fly if you become a Pegasus and a magic school if you become a unicorn.” The questions lasted for almost an hour until Swift seemed to worn down by it. “I’m sorry about all the questions, Swift,” Penny said, “I’m just so excited! I can’t wait to become a pony!” ‘That’s OK,” Swift said with a smile, “I was just as excited as you were when I found out I was becoming one. Actually, do you think you parents would like to meet mine?” “Sure!” Penny said. ‘Let’s ask them!” The two proceeded to where their parents were, in the living room. Although very busy, both of Penny's parents were still more than happy to talk to the two. “Hello, Penny’s parents!” Swift said, “I told my mom and dad about the fun I had a few days ago and about how you want to be ponies, and they really want to meet you. Would you like to come over to our house?” “That would be very nice!” Penny’s mom said, “I would love to meet your parents.” “Great! My parents said that they’re free on Saturday. Is that OK for you?” “That sounds fine for us,” Penny’s dad replied. “Great! I’ll tell them when I return home.” With that, Penny and Swift resumed their play date as the parents continued planning for conversion. Saturday quickly approached for Penny and her family. The three were very busy planning for conversion, although most of the planning was done by Penny's mother and father. Penny now began to notice that things were disappearing from the house, but she remembered when her parents told her how they couldn’t keep their things when becoming ponies. But her mind was now more focused on meeting Swift’s parents. She wondered what they would be like, although she guessed they were as nice as Swift was nice. Penny and her parents pulled up to Swift Wing's house, which looked like something out of a fairytale village. Then again, the entire neighborhood looked this way, with a dirt street lined with wooden houses. All of these houses were painted in cheery pastel colors. Swift’s house just happened to be a nice sky blue, fitting for a Pegasus pony. Penny saw Swift standing outside her house, flanked by two older ponies. One was a unicorn and had a blue pelt with a short silvery mane and tail, while the other was a pegasus yellow with a long red mane and tail. “Hello Penny!” Swift said as she hugged her friend. “These are my parents. And these are Penny’s parents,” she added pointing at them. “Nice to finally meet you!” Penny’s mom said. “And you too!” Swift’s dad said. “Well, how about you show Penny around Swift while we talk with Penny’s parents?” “OK dad!” Swift said as she took Penny with her, “Come on, Penny, I’ll show you my room.” The two made their way up the stairs and to Swift’s room. It was similar looking to Penny’s room with a bed and a desk. The main difference was that the bed was smaller and the desk was lower to accommodate a pony being able to easily access the drawers. This also made it easier to access the desk by a pony standing on its hind legs. There were also fewer things around, making the room look plainer than Penny’s. “So, what do you think of my room?” Swift asked as she sat on her bed. “It’s really nice!” Penny added as she looked around the room. Her eyes then focused on a framed poster of several Pegasus ponies dressed in blue uniforms with the words 'The Wonderbolts' in big letters. “Who are the Wonderbolts?” she asked her friend. “The Wonderbolts are an awesome aerial stunt team!” Swift said, “I went to one of their shows and was even selected to go backstage after the show to meet them! They gave me that poster. And look - they even signed their names on it!” Upon further inspection, Penny noticed that indeed there were many signatures. “Some day, when I’m older, I hope to try out for their team...” Swift said, deep in thought. “Well hopefully you’ll get to be a Wonderbolt.“ Penny said. "Who knows, maybe I’ll join you!” “So, do you want to play Wonderbolts?” Swift asked. “Play Wonderbolts?” Penny asked, “How do you do that?” “With these!” Swift said as she brought out a small box that was filled with several Woderbolts figures, “I’ll be Spitfire, since she’s my favorite Wonderbolt. You can pick anypony else.” “I’ll pick… this one.” Penny said as she selected a pony with a white mane and tail. “Ooo! Good choice. That’s Fleet Hoof. She acts kind of like you. So now that you have your Wonderbolt, let’s go! The show’s about to begin!” With that, the two played out their roles as Wonderbolts, acting out getting ready for the show, then performing aerial stunts and even meeting fans after the show. “Swift! Penny!” Swift’s mom’s voice was heard, “Time for dinner!” “OK!!!" the two echoed back as they went downstairs. Supper consisted of a big salad which all seemed to enjoy. Penny and her parents were a little unsure about eating the daisies in the salad as they never had them before, but after trying some it was OK. All the while the two families talked, sharing funny stories. Penny realized that Swift’s parents were very much like her own as they were very kind and loving. Supper was then capped off by a wonderful chocolate cake that all were excited to devour. Finally the night came to an end and Penny and her parents had to go home. Penny gave her friend a warm hug, happy to see her again. “Will you come to the place where I’m going become a pony?” Penny asked, “I’m going there in a week.” “Can I, mom and dad?” Swift said as she looked at her parents. “Sure!” Her mom said. “Definitely.” Her dad replied. “Looks like I’ll be seeing you there then!” Swift said. “Great!” Penny replied, “Well, see you later!” With that Penny climbed into the family car and left for home as Swift and her family waved to them as they departed. > Last Week > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Conversion Bureau A Girl's Wish By Lux Chapter 7 – Last Week The relative calmness of the week before had turned into a flurry of activity at Penny’s house. Much of the small odds and ends of the house were now gone, making the rooms look very plain. It was a surreal experience for Penny slowly seeing the house that she was born and raised in slowly emptying before her eyes. Now things were even stranger for her as the larger furniture was moved out and loaded into vans. There was also that ominous sign in the front yard that plainly read “For Sale.” Although she was a child, Penny knew what that sign meant. It meant that the house was no longer hers or her parents. Soon some other family would be living there, perhaps with a boy or a girl of their own. This new family would be watching movies in the living room, having dinner in the dining room, and even perhaps another child would be sleeping in her bedroom. To lessen the blow of this big move, her parents kept Penny's room intact until the very last possible moment. It was a stark contrast between the very empty rest of the house and her room, like there was some magical force field that kept her things intact. One day, however, her things had to go. To say that Penny was pleasant about giving up her things would be a gross lie. Some things of hers, like her clothes, she was able to easily give up. But when it came time for her Pegasus pictures and figurines, she couldn’t help but cry. “Please don’t cry,” her mother said holding her daughter close to her, “you know we can’t keep them. But don’t worry. Your Pegasus things will find new homes, and somewhere there is a girl just like you who will love playing with them.” “Really?” Penny said as she dried her eyes. “Yes, Penny.” he father said. “You also have a great friend in Swift who just happens to be a Pegasus pony, and she loves you very much. Plus, in a couple of days we’ll be going to the Conversion Bureau. You might become a Pegasus yourself.” “You really think I’ll be one?” Penny said as she looked at her parents in wonder. “Let me tell you a story.” her mother said. “My mother, when I was a little girl, told me that if I wished for something with all my heart it would come true. When I was older, I wished that I had had a beautiful daughter to love. And sure enough, you were born, Penny. You’re my wish come true! So how about every night before you go to sleep you wish really hard that you’ll get to become a Pegasus?” “Thanks, mom,” Penny said with a hug. “I’ll wish really, really hard. Can I at least keep Peggy?” “Sure,” her father said as he handed her the pink Pegasus plush that she loved the most out of all of her things. Penny held the animal closely to her seeing it as a means of comfort to her now and a hope for the future she dreamed of in becoming a Pegasus pony. At the final days, Penny’s parents decided to take her to Swift’s house. This way Penny had a friend to play with while her parents moved the last of her non-essential items. Penny was glad to be with her friend, especially after seeing her own house - and especially her bedroom - vanishing. It was like her world was falling apart, but at least Swift, and her own parents, were always there to cling to. “Swift?” Penny said as the two were playing Wonderbolts on the last day that Penny would be human. “Yes, Penny?” the Pegasus said. “I want to thank you.” “For what?” “Being my friend. You helped me to see that I could be a Pegasus pony and despite us looking different you still wanted to be my friend.” “Well, I can say the same thing,” Swift said, “I was worried that you wouldn’t like me because I was a pony. But you liked me and played with me and even invited me to your house.” ‘Will you do something, Swift?” Penny asked. “Sure Penny! What do you want me to do?” “My mom says that if I wish hard enough, I can become a Pegasus pony like you. Will you wish with me now so that I can become a Pegasus?” “Sure, Penny,” Swift said. The two spent several minutes in silence with their eyes closed. Penny wished to be a Pegasus while Swift wished her friend would become one. Deep down Swift wanted a Pegasus friend to fly around with, and this made her wish even more important and powerful. After the wish the two embraced in a friendly hug. Finally it came time for Penny to go back with her parents to spend one last night in their house. “Goodbye Swift,” Penny said. “Not goodbye," Swift said, “I’ll see you tomorrow.” That night Penny and her parents had a feast to mark their last meal as a human family. Each member of the family had their favorite food. Penny’s father had a steak with onions. Her mother had shrimp scampi. Penny had barbecued chicken with macaroni and cheese. The three ate and enjoyed each other’s company, just as they always did every night before. The three knew that despite having to move, giving up their things and way of life, and even becoming ponies, they would always be a family and always love each other. That night Penny slept in her room. The only thing left in her once pretty room was her mattress, some pillows and blankets, and a few things needed for the next day. That night she dreamed again of being a Pegasus pony, flying with her friend Swift. Suddenly many other ponies joined them in the skies until there was a rainbow of colors in the clouds. She hoped that her wishing would come true tomorrow, that her dream of becoming a Pegasus would be realized. > Penny's Wish > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Conversion Bureau A Girl's Wish By Lux Chapter 8 – Penny’s Wish The day had finally come when Penny and her parents would go to the conversion Bureau to become ponies. The three traveled on a bus into the city with only the clothes on their backs, a few personal items, and of course Penny’s favorite stuffed animal, Peggy. Penny looked out the window of the bus, watching the crowds pass by. Some were human, but there were now a great number of ponies in the crowd. The girl smiled at the fact that in a short time, she would be one of them. Finally after what seemed like an eternity of sitting and waiting, the bus pulled up to the curb in front of the Conversion Bureau. The place looked like a fairly ordinary brick building with a sign above that read 'Midtown Conversion Bureau'. Penny and her parents walked to the door, passing by a mare that was leaving as they were entering the building. Penny wondered if this pony was one born a pony or became one like her friend Swift did. The three approached the open waiting area that was filled with an assortment of people. Some were there by themselves while others were together as friends, couples or families. Penny’s parents approached the reception desk where a cheery earthpony greeted them and gave them some papers to sign. Penny sat in a chair and waited as her parents filled out the necessary paperwork. Then upon returning, after giving the information to the receptionist, she and her parents waited some more. The place was very boring to Penny as there was nothing to do. Penny read a children’s magazine but after that resumed her bored state. As she waited people were called by the receptionist and entered through the door to the right. She knew that each one would eventually become a pony and wondered what type they would be or what they would look like. Penny then wondered where Swift was. Her friend had promised to be there to see her one last time before she became a pony. Yet as the minutes passed, she didn’t see Swift Wing enter the building, only more people. She was about to give up hope when she heard a familiar voice. “Penny!” Swift called as she flew to the girl. “Swift, you made it!” Penny said as she hugged the pony. “Of course I did silly,” she said with a grin, “I made a promise to be here, and here I am. Oh, and hi, Penny’s parents!” “Hello Swift,” the two said, happy to see their daughter’s friend off. The receptionist then called Penny and her parents, indicating it was their time. “So I guess I’ll see you when I’m a pony then?” Penny said as she hugged Swift one last time. “Don’t worry. I’ll be waiting for you,” the Pegasus said with a smile. With that the three entered into the door. They proceeded down a long white hall into an open room that the receptionist told them to go. The room was fairly plain, like an exam room in a hospital. In one corner was a curtain structure that formed a small box like room in the center. Then another pony appeared, a yellow unicorn dressed in a nurse’s garb. “Hello!” the pony said, “I’m Nurse Vital Signs. I’m going to be taking some basic tests today before your conversion.” One by one, Penny and her parents were checked with their hearing, vision, reflexes, blood pressure, height and weight. Penny was a little nervous just like she always was being in a doctor’s office, but the pony nurse was very kind and caring, even explaining to the Penny what each test did to allay any fears. “OK then,” Nurse Vital Signs said as she used here telekinesis to place her stethoscope around her neck, “I’ll be right back!” She then disappeared down the hall and a few minutes later returned with three hospital gowns. “Now then, please change in the room over there,” the nurse said pointing to the curtained off area, “Please place all your clothes and items in the blue bin outside when you are done. I’ll check back on you in a few minutes.” Penny’s parents went first and changed into their gowns. As they exited they dropped the last of their human items into the blue bin. It then came time for Penny to get changed. When she had put on the gown, she left the curtained area. Penny easily deposited her clothes, knowing that she wouldn’t need them as a pony. Then she paused as she held her pink Pegasus pony plush in her hand. She was going to miss the thing that she took with her wherever she went, but she knew that she now had a friend who was a real-life Pegasus, and hopefully she’d be a Pegasus herself very soon. With a sigh, she let go of the plush, letting it fall into the bin. The nurse then returned and saw that the three were ready. “Ok then! Follow me.” The three followed her further down the hall to an open room with a hospital gurney and a small desk. Then a purple unicorn walked in the room followed by a yellow Pegasus. “Good afternoon,” the unicorn said, “My name is Twilight Sparkle. I will be overseeing your conversion into ponies today. This is my friend, Fluttershy. She is studying humans through the conversion process.” “Oh, hello,” Fluttershy said quietly. “You’re pretty!” Penny said to the Pegasus. “Oh…. Um… thank you,” Fluttershy said blushing slightly. “Can I give you a hug?” the girl said. The yellow pony looked at her unicorn friend to see if it was OK. Twilight nodded in approval. “Um sure,” Fluttershy said. The girl gave the pony a hug carefully before returning to her seat. “Penny loves Pegasus ponies,” her father explained. Her parents then told the two ponies about how Penny loved Pegasus things, how she met Swift, and how she was excited at the possibility of becoming one through conversion. The unicorn and the Pegasus listed with a smile at the tale. “Well,” Twilight said when the story ended, “I’m sorry, but unfortunately the potion used for conversion won’t let you choose your pony type.” Penny looked like she was ready to cry when the unicorn said this. She was so close to her dream and now she might not get it. “Wait,” Fluttershy said suddenly, causing everyone in the room to jump, especially her friend Twilight, “I can’t see this sweet girl who wants to be a Pegasus pony get denied that chance.” She then turned to her friend with a determined look on her face. “Twilight, take one of my feathers and add it to the potion.” “Fluttershy, I’m not sure if that will change anything,” Twilight said. “I know, but this will give Penny a good chance to become what she always wished for. Please Twilight?” “Fine,” Twilight said with a sigh as she plucked a feather out of Fluttershy’s wing. She then levitated the feather over to the purple concoction and dropped it in. For a few brief seconds the feather was seen weightlessly floating before dissolving into the mixture. “OK then,” Twilight said, “It’s time. Penny, you’re first. Please sit on the bed.” Penny looked at her parents. “Don’t worry,” her mother said, “We’ll be waiting for you when you wake up.” With a final hug from her parents, Penny climbed up on the gurney. Twilight then levitated the purple potion over to the girl. “Now Penny,” the unicorn said, “You will need to drink this entire potion for me.” Penny grabbed the drink and took a sip. The substance tasted like a grape drink. She then drank the rest of the potion before handing it to Twilight who immediately moved the empty container back to the table. No sooner had Penny taken the potion than she began to feel very sleepy. She laid down on the gurney, closed her eyes and drifted off to sleep. > A Wish Comes True > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Conversion Bureau A Girl's Wish By Lux Chapter 9 – A Wish Comes True Penny’s eyes slowly fluttered open, her pupils trying to adjust to the light in the room. She wondered if she was still in the Conversion Bureau. Then she realized: she was here to become a pony with her parents! She wondered if it had worked, if she had become a Pegasus. She hoped that all her wishing and the kind gesture that Fluttershy did by giving up one of her feathers to add to the potion had worked. “Oh, you’re awake,” Twilight’s voice was heard, “How do you feel, Penny?” “I feel fine,” she said, “Where am I?” “You’re in the recovery room,” Twilight said, “You were asleep for about an hour.” “Did it work? Did I become a pony?” “Yes, Penny. Congratulations, you’re a pony!” “I’m a pony now!” Penny said, squealing with delight. “Did I become a Pegasus pony? What color am I? How about my mane and tail? Oh, I really want to see what I look like!” Twilight Sparkle couldn’t help but giggle at Penny’s excitement. “OK, Penny, you’ll get to see yourself soon. But first, we need to check a few things. Could you look around for me?” Penny looked in different directions as Twilight asked. “OK, can you hear and see alright?” “I can see fine, and I can hear even better than I did when I was a girl.” “Since you’re a pony now,” Twilight said, “your senses will be better than when you were a human. Now you’re going to try walking. You’ll be walking on four hooves now, so it might be a little awkward for you at first. I want you to very slowly try to get up on your hooves.” Penny gradually rose to her hooves, albeit shaking a bit. It was a strange feeling being on all fours with the majority of her body behind her instead of directly under her. “Great!” Twilight said, “Now please walk around a little to get the feel of your hooves.” Penny began walking, slowly at first, but then picking up the pace. For a brief moment she almost fell after tripping over her hooves, but she quickly regained her balance and continued walking. “Fantastic!” Twilight said admiring her progress, “Now I know you wanted to see what you look like and what your pony type is. So, there is a mirror on the wall over there. Why don’t you go see for yourself? I’m sure you’ll be pleased.” Penny excitedly walked over to the mirror. Her mind was racing in the anticipation of what she looked like, especially if her wish to become a Pegasus had come true. She stopped at the mirror and gasped at what she saw. There in her reflection, she saw a pink Pegasus pony staring back at her. She had a bubblegum pink coat that reflected her favorite color. Her mane was silvery, reaching past her shoulders and although messy from sleeping on, it had a natural curl at the end, almost like how Fluttershy’s mane was. Penny’s tail was longer than her mane, almost touching the floor and having the same distinctive curl. The pony gave it a little flick and giggled at it. Her eyes were the same bright blue, but of course they were bigger and brighter than when she was a human. Penny noticed that there was something else, something attached to her sides. She could feel them when she walked, but didn’t know what they were. Tilting slightly so she could get a better view of her one side, she squealed in delight as she saw wings! “I’m a Pegasus!” she said. “The wish worked! I’m so pretty looking! I love my pink color and my silvery mane.” “I’m glad you like the way you look,” Twilight said with a smile, happy that the new pony was happy. Just then Fluttershy stepped in the room smiling that Penny had become a Pegasus. “Fluttershy!” Penny said as she ran and gave her a hug, almost knocking down the mare, “I’m a Pegasus like you now. Thank you so much for giving me that feather.” “Oh well, you’re very welcome!” Fluttershy said. “I’m so happy that you are happy. Now, try to unfold your wings... that is if you want to.” Penny focused on her new appendages. Suddenly they unfurled like a sail as she cooed in delight. “This is amazing! I can’t wait to learn how to fly.” “Oh,” Fluttershy said, “well you’ll be learning that in your new school. Rainbow Dash is a great teacher. She’ll have you flying in no time.” “Oh I can’t wait to show my parents how I look as a pony!” Penny said. “Well your parents are here now, Penny,” Twilight said as she motioned over to the doorway. There, standing in the doorway were two older ponies. One was a unicorn stallion with a blue pelt and a blonde mane and tail. The other was a Pegasus mare with a white pelt and a reddish mane and tail. “Mom? Dad? Is that you?” “Yes, Penny,” the mare spoke with a smile, “it’s us.” “Hello kiddo,” her father said, “How are you feeling?” “I’m great!” she said as she folded her wings and trotted over to the two, giving them a big pony hug. “So, how do I look?” “You look very pretty!” her father said. “And you became a Pegasus!” her mom said. “I’m so happy for you!” “Well, there’s one thing left to do,” Twilight said, “You need a pony name, Penny. It can be anything you want, but I can’t decide for you. You need to make one.” Penny thought for a moment about what name she wanted to be for the rest of her life. Finally it dawned on her. “I want to be called Air Heart.” Her parents smiled in approval as their daughter stated her name. “Well, Air Heart,” Twilight said, “congratulations on becoming a pony! Now a nurse will show you and your parents to the next room where you’ll then be taken to your new home. I think that there’s a certain pony that’s asking for you there.” Air Heart gave Twilight a big hug. “Thanks Twilight!” she said. “You’re welcome,” the unicorn said, “well, good bye you three!” The three new ponies proceeded down the hall with the nurse to an open room. Air Heart’s parents were busy filling out some paperwork while penny looked around. “Penny?” a voice was heard, “Is that you?” “Swift!” Air Heart exclaimed as she saw her friend behind her and gave her a hug. “You look pretty!” the Pegasus exclaimed. “And you got your wish to become a Pegasus!” “Thanks! I’m so happy I get to fly now.” “Well, I’ll definitely teach you how to fly. You’ll be in the air with me really soon.” “Oh, there is one thing,” the pink pony said. “Yes?” “My name isn’t Penny anymore. It’s Air Heart.” “Air Heart!” Swift said with a smile. “Nice name!” “Air Heart!” her mom was heard calling, “Time to go to our new home!” “I have to go, Swift. But I’ll be having you over really soon.” “OK then,” Swift said, “See you later!” Air Heart and her family then walked out the door where a waiting carriage was to take them to their new home and the start of their new life. > One Month Later > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Conversion Bureau A Girl's Wish By Lux Chapter 10 – One Month Later “I'm going to play in the field, mom!” Air Heart said. “OK, honey,” the white Pegasus pony said as she sat on the bench. “Be safe!” Air Heart then flew past the playground equipment towards the field. She wasn’t the best flyer just yet, but at least she was able to soar and glide a little now that she learned some things from Flight School . She landed in the middle of the field and looked up at the clear blue sky as if waiting for something - or more importantly, somepony. Suddenly the pink pony saw a Pegasus circling above before descending. The Pegasus came to a hard stop, kicking up some grass and dirt which flew in the breeze. “Hi, Swift!” Air Heart said to the pony that just landed. “Hi, Air!” Swift said, “Are you ready to have fun flying today?” “I sure am!!!” Air Heart said squealing with delight. “Great! I think I’ll teach you how play sky tag today.” “Sky tag?” Air said with a confused look. “How do you play that?” “Like this...” Swift said as she walked over to the pink pony and tapped her on the shoulder, “Tag! You’re it! Bet you can’t catch me!” With that Swift took off back into the sky and then stopped and looked at the pony on the ground with a smile. “Oh, I’m so going to catch you!” Air said as she took off into the air. The two pegasus pony friends darted and dodged in the sky. From the ground they looked like two colored dots dancing in the sky. Occasionally one could hear them shout, “Tag! You’re it!” Air Heart’s mom smiled as watched the two. She reminisced at how what seemed like a long time ago was really only a few months, and how these two met, and how after that their lives had changed forever. Then she realized that this is how life should be, filled with laughter and friends and love. Air Heart’s mother hoped that she would retain her childhood innocence throughout the rest of her life. Perhaps then the world, be it for humans or ponies, would be better if seen through the eyes of a child. I had a really fun time putting a new slant on a Conversion Bureau story by using a child as a main character.
