Performing for a single fan, Rainbow Dash's speed and agility mesmerized the heart of the young princess watching below. With every climax and death defying trick Twilight Sparkle could feel her body hasten in excitement as she longingly dreamt of lying in the cyan pegasus’s warm embrace. Over the years Twilight had slowly grown to see Rainbow as much more than just a friend. Whether it was her arrogant demeanor, or the way she freaked out for all things Wonderbolts and Daring Do, Twilight could not help falling in love. Desperately she wanted to share her feelings with Dash, but she was never certain if she would feel the same. It was one thing not having the same love and passion she held, but what if Rainbow rejected her? Though Rainbow seems like a fairly tolerant pony, the idea of two mare being together might be too much for her to accept. Twilight could not chance having her heart broken and her friendship ruined in one foul swoop. Lost in her train of thought Twilight was unaware of the cyan mare who had just landed in front of her. “By the astonished look on your face I take it I was awesome.” Rainbow Dash's wings spread in a triumphant pose as a devilish grin slyly crept over her face. “Then again, was there ever any doubt?” Taking a moment to bask in her own glory Rainbow strutted around the still silent mare. “Twi, Twilight, Equestria to Twilight. Is anypony home?” Startled and confused Twilight feverishly shook her head sending a shiver down her back passed her wings. “Rainbow Dash, you never cease to amaze me. I thought my heart was going to leap out of my chest. You're pretty...” “Amazing.” Stopping her in mid sentence Rainbow's words were sealed with a single wink. “Okay, okay, you're not that great.” Twilight could feel her face blush as she playfully flirted with the athletic mare. “I bet you couldn't even beat me in a race, say back to your place.” “Is that so, huh?” Rainbow's voice grew in intensity as her competitive nature slowly took over. “Why don't you leave the racing to me Twi? I would hate to make your highness look bad.” “Maybe you're right.” Twilight's words slowly trailed off as her head slightly lowered toward the ground. “I couldn't beat you if I wanted to.” “You know it! Oh.” Rainbow could see the sadness welling up in Twilight's eyes as her arrogance slowly turned to guilt. “Hey Twi. I was just playing around.” Having her back turned toward Rainbow, a single word whispered from Twilight's mouth, “Rainbow?” “Yeah Twi.” “One, two, three, go!” With a powerful gust of wind Twilight found herself rocketing through the air. A taunting veneer on her face seductively egging on Rainbow's desires. “Hey!” Following close behind, Rainbow Dash quickly climbed after the sneaky alicorn. Chasing after the “now” Princess of Friendship, Rainbow Dash soon found herself in a state of pure joy. Not since she was in junior flight camp had she felt such attraction for another pony. Twilight was unlike any other pony she had ever met. It wasn't the fact that she was an alicorn princess, though that didn't hurt anything, but rather how she was the full package. Though she would never tell her this Rainbow felt lucky to even know her let alone be flying next to her. Rainbow knew it would never work out. Why would someone as smart and talented like Twilight ever want to be with a dumb jock. It was unlike Rainbow to undermined how awesome she believed herself to be, but compared to Twilight she just didn't fill adequate. None of this mattered, for at this moment all that was important was each other. Floating weightlessly over Twilight, Rainbow flawlessly glided into her side as she mischievously elbowed her . “Hey Twilight, I thought this was a race.” Then as if with no effort at all Rainbow lit up with an array of color as she widened the gap between them. “See you at the finish line.” Knowing she was unable to beat Dash on flying skills alone Twilight mind began to race for some way to even the odds without resorting to any sort of cheating. Suddenly and without a second thought Twilight's voice shattered the silence of the now setting day when five words screamed from her mouth, “Rainbow Dash, I love you!” “What?” In a state of both utter confusion and secret passion Rainbow closed her eyes as the radiant image of Twilight raced through her mind. Was what she heard real? Could Twilight love her? “Rainbow Dash look out!” Crash!!! In a moment of lapsed judgment Rainbow soon found herself smashing through the basement window of a nearby house. How could she allow herself to forget all of her flight training in a single second to not only crash, but end up with her flank flailing in the air? The only thing that could make this situation worse was if Twilight found her before she could get up. “Well. Uhmm lets see. No! Stupid window! And I'm stuck. Way to go Rainbow Dash you got yourself stuck.” A look of shame and embarrassment wash over her body as she frantically wiggled and squirmed in an attempt to free her slender frame. Then a familiar voice pierced her ears forcing her heart to drop to the floor. “Hey Rainbow Dash, I'm pretty sure this means I win.” A hint of laughter accompanied Twilight's every phrase as she gently lowered herself next to Dash's vulnerable flank. Knowingly taunting the trapped mare Twilight hooves devilishly found themselves resting on Rainbow plot. “Only cause you cheated. Now knock it off and get me out of here.” Dash's tail defensively whipped around as her anger began to grow. “What's that you said. I can't hear you through this wall.” Giggling Twilight was having to much fun to just give in. This was a rare opportunity and she wasn't about to pass it up. Finding herself wedged tight within the window frame Rainbow Dash sat as her fate and her flank where in Twilight's 'caring' hooves. Though it was Twilight's full intent to let her out she was not going to waste this opportunity to find out how Rainbow really felt about her. Blurting out the truth must have had some affect on Dash otherwise she wouldn't have crashed. Whatever the case may be Twilight had to risk it all. “Hurry up, and get me out of the here, Twilight. I'm starting to lose feeling in my wings.” Rainbow Dash paddled in place as if she was swimming up stream, but her tired efforts only prolonged her stay, “Twilight are you even back there? I don't hear anything.” Twilight's cheeks began to blush as she deeply resisted her need to giggle. “I'm hear Rainbow...Hey Rainbow, can I ask you something?” Twilight's face slowly blushed as she carefully pick out exactly what to say, “You want to talk right now?! I hate to be rude, but I am kind of preoccupied!” Rainbow's frustration began to show through her normal ice cold temperament. “I'm being serious. If you answer my question, I promise to help. Cross my heart and hope to fly.” Rainbow's eyes rolled as she realized there was no point in fighting her. Besides what harm could a single question be? “Okay Twilight, fire away, but then you have to let me out.” “Thank you Rainbow.” “You can thank me later. Now what's your question?” “Rainbow?..” Twilight's lungs exhaled a long breath as she tried to slow down her heartbeat. “Rainbow, What do you think of me?” “What do you mean?” A look of confusion swept over the rainbow pony. Her mind quickly turned to moments ago when Twilight confessed her love. Could this be what she was asking about? “Just... What do you think of me?” As Twilight's anxiety crescendoed she soon noticed her hooves trembling beneath her. “I don't know. I think you are smart?” “Oh.” “Yeah?” Rainbow paused momentarily, but was met with silence. “I mean you are like the smartest pony I know. You are always so caring, and you did save Equestria like how many times. I mean... You're pretty awesome.” Tears welled in Twilight's eyes as Rainbow danced around what she longed to hear. “You think I'm awesome?” “Yeah. Not as awesome as me, but that's me.” Having stalled long enough Twilight finally worked up her courage. “Rainbow Dash, I want you to know... I... I love you.” With a sudden flash of energy the cyan pegasus vanished from her predicament only to be greeted by the loving stare of her heartfelt friend. Staring deep into her eyes Dash could feel the anticipation building within Twilight's heart. Seconds turned into minutes as the two mares stood frozen in time. It was clear to them that sparks had indeed flew, but for one mare this sudden display of emotion was too much. Nothing would make Rainbow happier than to reveal her long awaited love upon the the still waiting princess, but she couldn't bring herself to do so. Lowering her head in shame she could feel her fears getting the best of her. More important than that she could feel Twilight's heart breaking. Tears rained down Twilight's violet face staining the soft dirt as she took off from the embarrassing scene. Deep down she knew that no pony could love her, least of all Rainbow Dash. How could she be so foolish to allow another to bare her heart? Making her way through the now sleeping city she hoped no one had saw the horrid event. The agony of depression washed over her soul leaving her numb of all emotion. No one pursued Twilight nor was anypony coming to her side. The only pony who knew of her sadness and pain was still simply standing there. With her eyes closed Rainbow was secretly kicking herself for the damage she had caused. Never had she seen Twilight so tore up inside. How could she cause the pony that she loved so much heartache? Why couldn't she at least talk to her? If only she had said something maybe she wouldn't be alone right now. Staring into her eyes was such a magical moment. In those few seconds Rainbow's heart was beating faster than it ever has, and her anxiety rose to epic proportions. The only thought that danced around her mind was a single question. What if she finds out I'm not as awesome as I appear to be? Rainbow Dash's arrogance and confidence were known all over Ponyville, but the truth of the matter was this was just an act. It was true that Rainbow Dash was awesome, but what about the pony underneath. What if behind this glorious front was a nobody that didn't deserve Twilight's love? What if at the end of the day she was nothing more than a fake? The idea of pulling back the curtain for all to see was horrifying. In this moment of doubt she not only froze, but possibly lost her only chance at happiness. She tried as hard as she could to muster up all of the courage she had left, but it was to late. Twilight was gone. Swooping through her open bedroom window Twilight quickly hid herself from the world deep beneath her cool silk sheets. The void in her chest felt like a black hole capturing every glint of happiness left in her life. Unable to do anything but cry Twilight laid in her bed hoping that her suffering would soon go away. Isolated and cold Rainbow Dash took to her home as she wallowed in her own self doubt. Diving into her reserve stash of apple cider Rainbow looked off of her balcony at the moonlit backdrop of the city. Lost somewhere in the tall pint of cider the cyan mare chose her fate. “Alright Ponyville hear me now! I love Twilight Sparkle, and I will make this right! Someway, somehow, I will win back her love!” > Chapter 2 > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- The night was long for the two torn lovers as they faced the all revealing dawn. What should have been a beautiful morning was now shrouded with gloomy despair, but this was not about to stand in the way of one lovestruck pegasus. Rainbow Dash was going to do everything in her power to make this right, but she didn't know where to start. Hoping that by some miracle Twilight could have slept off last nights exchange was a long shot. The look of devastation that had washed over those royal, purple eyes was proof enough that time alone couldn't fix these wounds. Having slept for no more than an hour or two, Rainbow's eyes slowly revealed the effects of her long night of self-pity. Weary and disdained, Rainbow struggled to free herself from her bed. Touching ground her wings achingly spread from her sides in an attempt to lift herself off of the floor. Nauseous and pale she clumsily hovered into her bathroom and slouched in front of her mirror. The rainbow pony could barely look at the disappointment she had become. Her eyes expressed her exhaustion as her mane showcased her stress. Not even the cool water of the sink could wash away the pain coursing through her head, but in truth she was glad. Though her skull felt like it was struck by lightning, it was all she needed to know that she was still real. With the sun still crawling over the horizon there was no point in rushing over to Twilight's home and pleading for forgiveness. If anything this would only exacerbate the situation. If Twilight was still asleep she was not about to be the one to wake her, and if she was awake there was a good chance she was still pretty upset. Either way it was in her best interest to take a flight and clear her mind. She had already caused enough damage, and flying in half-cocked wouldn't help her odds. If she was truly going to capture the affection of the fair maiden she had to be at her best. To do this she needed to reconnect with herself. Only with the refreshing breath of the world rippling through her mane was Rainbow Dash really able to find peace. Flying was her life, her passion, and her world, and up until recently there was nothing that surpassed it. Nothing, until Twilight. Lightly casting off of her cloud sculpted home Rainbow floated into the heavens as the morning sun graced the citizens below. Breathing in the fresh air allowed her mind to focus. Touring the city Rainbow's body slipped the surly bonds of earth. Frozen like a still drying painting, Ponyville watched as Rainbow Dash raced through her streets. Her speed and determination were unmatched as the warm air funneled around her. Reaching the peak of ascension her wings opened wide allowing for a powerful breeze to pass over her feathers. Her eyes leisurely closed as the vision of her beloved city raced through her mind, and then like a clap of thunder Rainbow plummeted from the sky. Spiraling toward the ground Rainbow's face showed no fear. It was funny how mere inches from certain death Rainbow remained as cool as an ice cube, but when presented with the opportunity for happiness she was terrified. Why did she freeze? If only she had said how she felt. Whatever the case she knew that Twilight wasn't going anywhere. As long as she didn't wait too long she would still have a chance to make things right. Feeling her confidence grow, Rainbow Dash started her descent toward the still awe-inspiring Castle of Friendship. Its crystal exterior glistened in the sun as it casted a colorful array over the frightened mare. The beautiful monument of friendship could not stifle her fear. Though her face held a certain ferocity her hooves couldn't hide the truth. She was scared. Gracefully landing in the grand hallway Rainbow was soon overwhelmed with thoughts and emotions. Lost in a hypnotic state she stumbled her way through the castle's interior as she searched for her love. Before she could back out she soon found herself staring down the door to Twilight's bedroom. The air in the hallway hung stagnate as the shadows danced across the walls. Frozen against the soft glow of candlelight the cyan pony exhaled a long breath of air as she steadied her shaking hooves. Hesitant Rainbow raised her hoof to the door and produced a singular knock upon its wooden frame. “Twilight? Its me, Rainbow Dash. Can we talk?” Rainbow's ear pressed tight against the cold door as she secretly hoped for no one to answer. “Twilight?” Still waiting for some sign of life, Rainbow crept into the lavish chamber only to find that it was empty. The silk sheets of the bed remained untouched and perfectly made as the rest of Twilight's adornments awaited her return. By the looks of it, no one had step hoof into the chamber since yesterday. Did Twilight make it home last night? Confused and a little alarmed Rainbow's pace steadily increased as she turned her attention toward searching the rest of the castle. Twilight had to be here somewhere. Consumed by Twilight's whereabouts Rainbow's thoughts struggled to maintain their sanity. The last thing she needed to do was jump to conclusions. Now rocketing through every corridor of the castle, Rainbow's search drew to an end as it proved a futile effort. Twilight was gone. Having exhausted every theory to her location, Rainbow slowly returned to the throne room. Tired and upset the young mare sluggishly lowered into her seat. Where could Twilight have gone? The truth of the matter was Twilight most likely went out for some breakfast or took a trip to the store, but if that was the case then why did she feel so bad. Could it be that Twilight never made it home? Rainbow's mind swirled with doubt allowing her hope to dwindle. Wallowing in her own self-pity, her head slowly fell into her hooves. What was she going to do? Suddenly a sound erupted from a nearby passage. Distant at first the noise soon echoed throughout the grand hall until it came to a sudden stop. “Hey Rainbow, what are you up to?” Rainbow's s perked with excitement at the presence of Spike's cheery voice. “Just ruining my life. Hey Spike, you wouldn't happen to know where Twilight is, would you? I really need to talk to her.” Rainbow's eyes were locked on the marble floor as she tried to hide the tears flowing down her face. “Oh, she didn't tell anyone?” “Tell us what? “Well that makes sense. I mean, it just happened late last night.” Spike leisurely climbed into his stone cathedra. Making himself comfortable the purple dragon carefully broke the spine to his latest issue of Power Ponies. “Spike, will you just tell me already?” “Alright, alright, calm down. Last night Twilight received a letter from Princess Celestia about needing her help. So Twilight gathered her things and took off.” “Did the letter mention where she was going or how long she would be gone?” “Yeah, I think she said something about going to the Macintosh Hills. I believe the dragon migration is passing through that area, and Celestia wanted Twilight to take this opportunity to really study their migration behaviors. Whatever the case Twilight felt like she needed to leave right away.” Never looking up from his printed heroes Spike carried on like all was right with the world. “Well, why didn't you go with her?” Rainbow ascended to the ceiling as her voice grew stern. The young pegasus remembered all to well what happened the last time they crossed paths with those dragons, and Twilight's safety was the only thing on her mind. “Hey it's not like she gave me much choice in the matter. Twilight told me that she was just going to be gone a few days. She also said that I had to stay here and watch after the castle. Besides I am positive that if she needed my help she would have brought me along. I am her number one assistant after all.” “Well, was there anything else before she left?” Rainbow trotted in place as she grew more and more impatience. “You know, now that you mention it. She seemed awfully focused on her work. You know, not in the way she normally is, but really focused. The only time I have seen her like that was when she was upset.” “And you let her leave like that?” “I'm not worried. She's just doing some research for Celestia. She'll be fine.” Pacing back and forth, Rainbow struggled with her conscious. Judging by how quick Twilight left town, it was clear she wanted to distance herself from the whole situation. On the other hoof Twilight might have just ran headlong into trouble. Spike was right. Twilight was more than capable of taking care of herself. She did single hoofedly defeat Tirek. Besides how much trouble can one pony get into. That being said this was Twilight she was talking about. Trouble came with the territory. “So she is heading toward the Macintosh Hills, right?” “That's what the letter said.” “Okay, that's South of Ponyville. So that means I would have to fly over the Everfree Forest, pass over the town of Appaloosa, and final make my way up the mountain side. Okay, seems easy enough. No problem there. Got it.” Speaking aloud Rainbow planned out her trip. Twilight had an several hour lead, and if Rainbow was going to catch up to her she couldn't stop for anything. It was going to be an endurance test, but Rainbow was wanting a opportunity to push her flying ability. “So, when do we leave?” Spike eagerly sprung from his seat as he triumphantly posed for his audience. “Sorry Spike, I need you to stay here. Not that I don't enjoy your company, but I will move faster on my own. Besides someone needs to stay behind and tell the others where we went.” “You sound just like Twilight. Fine, I'll stay here with the owl.” Spike threw up his arms in defeat as he slowly turned away from the excited mare. Before Spike could return to his book, Rainbow had exploded out of the crystal hall and out the grand entry way. Equipped with nothing more than her driving passion for Twilight, she tore through the streets like a bat out of Tartarus. She was on a mission and nothing was going to stand in her way. More importantly she wasn't going to let her emotions tear her down. Rainbow knew that if she was going to be any help she needed to be calm and collected. All Rainbow wanted was a chance to share in Twilight's love, and maybe spend some time together. Mostly she just wanted to look upon her gorgeous allure one more time. Rainbow had no doubt that Twilight was safe, but she would feel better seeing it for herself. “Next stop, the Macintosh Hills. Twilight, I won't be long, I promise.” With the sun on her left Rainbow sailed through the endless ocean of the sky. With determination as her sword and love as her armor the young pegasus had her heading. Nothing in her life truly made sense until now. Her future had arrived, and she was ready to go. > Chapter 3 > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sailing over the sea of clouds, Rainbow Dash basked in the sun's warm embrace as her shadow raced along the ground. The dirt roads merged with the forest as the noise of the bustling city faded away to nothing. For most ponies the Everfree Forest held not only their deepest nightmares, but fear itself. The absence of light and its ominous presence was enough to cause even the toughest of ponies to flee in terror, but not Rainbow Dash. Ever since she had collided into Twilight on the eve of the Summer Sun Celebration, Rainbow knew her life was going to be different. To stand by her side and face the darkness, proved that the Everfree Forest wasn't as scarey as once perceived. Now with multiple adventures under her belt the forest seemed like just another attraction on her quest for love. Making her way across the vast timberland, the winds grew calm as the sky darken. Shivers rocketed down Rainbow's spine as the clouds formed above her; then with a flash of lightning the swirling tempest erupted with rain. Like tiny wet kisses, Rainbow was enveloped in the storms cold grasp. Her wings grew heavy as the water seeped into her feathers. Her mane hung drenched passed her face as a look of confusion crept across her brow. Ponyville wasn't scheduled for a storm for at least another week, but then again this wasn't Ponyville. She had always heard of the mysterious way life seemed to exist without pony intervention, but never before had she seen the weather form on its own. The very idea of the weather being able to create itself was just unnatural. Thinking back to her flight training Rainbow accelerated towards the top of the storm. She knew that she couldn't go around it, and if she were to stay the course her soaked wings would make flying impossible. Fighting against the harsh winds, her body started to tire as she climbed higher into the air. Bolts of lightning flashed around her, illuminating the darkened azure's of the skies. The raw power of the weather was not a force to underestimate, but Rainbow was a professional. Reaching the underbelly of the beast, the clouds began to part under her hooves as a small beacon of light shined upon her face. Soon she would be back on her way. Boom! The cyan mare was bathed in light as she lifelessly spiraled toward the the forest floor. Rainbow's hooves hung limp as she passed through the net of branches onto the hard ground. Every fiber of her being screamed in agony as she laid motionless amongst the greenery. Slipping in and out of consciousness she wearily struggled to return to her hooves, but each attempt seemed more and more futile. Rolling onto her belly she slowly wiped away the rain from her eyes and proceeded to examine her injuries. Though her body was fine, her right wing proved to be sprained and slightly singed. It was clear she wasn't going to be able to fly out of this predicament. Limping through the damp thicket the young mare carefully trekked into the unknown. Though she was able to maintain her heading, the fact of the matter was she was lost. With every step she took the shadows of the forest commenced in an overture of ghostly tones designed to strike fear into the heart of all who entered its realm, but this didn't scare her. Wisecracking at the haunting sounds her laughter was soon the only noise left when a bloodcurdling howl echoed through woods. Frozen by a pungent odor, a hot breath swept across her neck confirming the terror waiting behind her. Lunging at her with its fierce jaws, the timberwolf' narrowly missed the young mare's flesh as it tauntingly pawed at its food. Patiently planning its next move, the wolf stared into Rainbow's eyes eagerly licking its lips in anticipation. Taking her opportunity, Rainbow quickly maneuvered through the maze of vines as the wolf hungrily followed. With a sudden burst of fury her hind hooves rocketed into the wolf's head sending its remains scattered along the path. In this brief moment Rainbow collected her thoughts as the pieces of the creature attempted to reform. If this wasn't bad enough, Rainbow's victory was short lived as two more wolves emerged out of the darkness. Their eyes shined like green balls of fire, as their glow illuminated their fangs shrouded in the shadows. Poised for attack, Rainbow studied the movements as the three wolves circled her position. One strike of those razor sharp claws and Rainbow Dash was done for. She knew she was unable to face all three timberwolves alone so she took to the defensive. Rainbow raced through the thorns as the treeline thinned to nothing. Staring down the edge of a ravine Rainbow's anxiety slowly rose as the growing footfall of the wolves grew closer with every second. With her back towards the cliff her mind desperately raced for some way to escape her current predicament, when suddenly an idea swept into her brain. It was risky, but Rainbow Dash was never one to run from danger. Charging toward her pursuers her heartbeat started to soar as she widened the gap between her and the cliff. Her timing was exact for as soon as the wolves' breath pierced her fur she rocketed down the path. The wind rushed through her mane as her eyes narrowed on her target. The dirt billowed below her hooves as she neared the point of no return. “Come on, Rainbow. Show'em a little “dash”!” Gracefully leaping through the air Rainbow sailed across the void as a smile grew across her face. “Ah yeah! That's what I'm talking about. They don't call me “Rainbow” and “Dash” for nothing.” Skidding to a halt. her eyes carefully studied the wolves as they hungrily paced on the other side. Any second one of those wolves could leap across the ravine, and she wasn't going to be caught off guard when it happened. Striking a violent pose, Rainbow stood strong as the sight of the wolves nervously retreating back into the cover of darkness fueled her confidence. “Not so big and bad now, huh?” Turning away from the cliff she soon found herself facing the tiny beak of a familiar creature. “Hey, a chicken.” “Not a chicken! Not a chicken!” Hurtling through the bushes, Rainbow bolted down the path as the cockatrice casually hopped after her. She might have avoided its deadly stare for now, but if she was to make it out of the Everfree Forest, she had to be more careful. There was no telling what type of creature was lurking behind the next corner, and arrogance wasn't going to keep her safe. She needed to be at her best to survive. At least for a little while, she was. Having wandered for several minutes undisturbed, Rainbow was finally able to take in the stunning beauty that was the forest. Whether it was the ravishing blue orchids that lined the dirt roads or the way the fireflies waltzed around the trees, the grace of the vast forest was unlike anything she had seen before. Making her way down the path Rainbow couldn't help but smile. Despite being struck by lightning and temporarily losing the ability of flight she was having a blast. This was just like a Daring Do adventure. Having met Daring Do herself, Rainbow only hoped that her performance wouldn't have let her hero down. That being said the real thing on her mind was how much she wanted Twilight to be there with her. It was Twilight who first showed her the awesome tales of Daring Do, and there was no one else who shared in this love. Rainbow knew she was not an egghead like Twilight, but when she was lost deep within the pages of one of her books she felt like maybe she wasn't some dumb jock. In those moments she believed that Twilight and her were kindred souls. Sure the idea that two ponies being destined to be together simply because they shared the same interest in a book series was a little far fetched, but this was just one more thing in the mountain of qualities that Rainbow Dash so longingly adored. Entering into a nearby clearing Rainbow's eyes carefully scanned for looming threats as a sweet aroma whirled through the air. The bewitching smell of lilacs hauntingly lured her along the treeline until her sense were consumed by its mystical powers. Waiting amongst the sea of greens rested a stunning display of flowers unlike anything Rainbow had ever seen. Lightly touched with a light pink mist their purple petals gently waved in the breeze. Lost in their fragrance, comforting memories of Twilight raced passed her eyes as her legs softly trembled beneath her. Mustering up all of her strength she wearily staggered across the meadow as her body slowly lost all feeling. With the poison running its course Rainbow pointlessly fought to stay awake when a faint specter appeared by her side. “Twilight?” “I've got you Rainbow Dash. Everything will be okay.” Providing support the alicorn's wing smoothly wrapped around Rainbow's slender frame as they swiftly made their way out of the meadow. Rainbow knew that as long as she was in Twilight's caring hooves, she would be alright. No longer did she have to struggle to stay awake. With fresh air filling her lungs she soon found herself deep within the realm of slumber. When her eyes reopened the stunning vision of her love triumphantly stood against the moonlight as a light fog snaked along the ground. “Twilight, I am so happy to see you. When I heard you left I just had to come find you. I needed to tell you that I... I love you.” A great weight plummeted from her chest as those three words echoed from her lips. Longingly staring into her eyes a nervous smile crept across Rainbow's face. The air around them grew stale and cold as they both sat in silence. “Twilight? I know that you are still mad at me, but I am deeply sorry for not telling you sooner. You deserve someone who will treat you right, and I can only hope that you will let me try,” Twilight stood motionless as she blankly stared off into the distance. The silence ripped apart Rainbow's soul as tears welled in her eyes. “Twilight please, at least say something. Please.” Though her suffering was great what hurt the most was the realization of what Twilight went through, The thought of her special somepony so deeply wounded was worst than any torture. How could she possibly expect Twilight to forgive her when she couldn't forgive herself? Her journey was over, and she had failed. Taking a step forward a sudden gust of air raced through Twilight's mane, dissolving her into nothing. The trees melted into the background as the stars cascaded across the sky until all that was left was the moon. “Don't be alarmed Rainbow Dash. This is nothing more than a nightmare brought on by the poisonous fumes of those flowers you discovered, but you are safe. You're currently lost somewhere between reality and a dream, but luckily I am capable of traveling in both realms.” Rainbow's heart erupted in her chest as the lunar princess emerged from behind the moon. Gracefully landing in front of the devastated mare Princess Luna bared a sadden look as she graciously bowed her wings. She never enjoyed seeing her subjects in pain, but it was her burden to bare. Overwhelmed with emotions Rainbow's tired eyes looked upon her savior, uncertain what was real and what was fiction. What type of twisted dream could dangle one's desires mere inches from their grasp only to snatch it away? “Thank you Princess Luna.” “The pleasure is mine, but you shouldn't be so hard on yourself.” “Hard on myself!?! It was your stupid dream that was being hard on me!” Rainbow turned a bright red as she aggressively pulled away from Luna. “No my little pony. A dream is a reflection of one's own emotions. It was not the nightmare that was causing you so much misfortune, but rather your own self-doubt.” Rainbow knew that Luna was right, but that didn't resolve her problem. Dream or reality the outcome would've ended the same. Rainbow would be alone. “May I ask you a question?” Wiping her still crying eyes Rainbow slightly nodded. “Was it you who declared your love for her, or did she reveal it to you?” “She told me?” Rainbow's head tilted to the right as she strived to follow Luna's train of thought. “Why do you ask?” “It sounds to me that you have already won her heart. So now you simply have to reach out and claim it.” Luna's words rang throughout her body as she released a long breath. Everything she said was right. No longer was she going to beat herself up about the past, but rather aim for a better tomorrow. Her tears began to dry as the fire within her belly reignited with a great ferocity. “Rainbow Dash.” “Yes Princess Luna?” “If you break her heart, I will personally turn your every dream into a nightmare. Do I make myself clear?” The brisk night's wind funneled around the alicorn's wings as she gracefully casted off the ground towards the moon. Her midnight blue mane shined with a beautiful radiance as she merged with the night sky. “Till we meet again Rainbow Dash. Good luck.” Then with a bright flash of energy she was gone, and so was the dream. Jarring awake, Rainbow feverishly tried to shake off the bitter feeling brewing deep within her gut. Though she was still feeling the repercussions of the dream, she knew that she would be alright. To her surprise the forest had all but disappeared as she found herself staring at the haunting allure of the Appaloosa desert. The mixture of dirt and sand reflected the setting sun's rays creating an array of purples and golds that shimmered in awe-inspiring beauty. The stunning display held many truths, but none as pleasant as being out of the woods. Sitting on cloud nine, she watched as the stars slowly revealed themselves along side the moon's magnetism as a small whisper lightly floated toward the heavens. “Goodnight Princess Luna. Thank you.” Rainbow closed her eyes and slipped into the peaceful realm of sleep. It was hard to believe that she had only travel such a short distance, but tomorrow was a new day. Whatever happened next was sure to be a cake walk compared to today. One thing was for certain, she was going to be ready. Never again would she be afraid to bare her heart to another. > Chapter 4 > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Feeling the blistering sun bearing down upon her tired body, Rainbow Dash raced along the desert floor. Though the heat had ripped away her energy, her inner desire was still strong. It had been hours since she had left the Everfree Forest, yet to her it seemed like days. With the abrasive winds upon her face Rainbow's pace never missed a beat, but she knew she couldn't maintain this tempo forever. Without some source of water or shade it didn't matter how hard she fought; it would be over. “Come on Rainbow Dash, a little farther. What was the point of all of that training if you are going to give out on me now? Just a little more.” Speaking aloud the tired mare struggled to maintain her focus as her legs slowly began to shut down. Her knees turned to jelly as her muscles finally gave out, sending her body crashing down upon the hot dirt floor. Breathing heavily Rainbow could feel her heart pounding against her chest as sweat poured down her brow. Staring up at the cloudless sky a column of smoke snaked and swirled into her view followed by an ear-piercing scream of a nearby train. Could it be true? Had she made it to the outskirts of Appaloosa? Quickly rolling onto her belly Rainbow was overwhelmed with excitement as the vision of a steel specter emerged from the horizon. Charging along its metal rails the old 97 to Appaloosa glimmered in the sun's glorious grace. “Ahh, yeah!” Springing back to life Rainbow Dash drew upon all of her strength as she galloped along the side of the fierce engine. Every step was harder than the last, but it wasn't long before the city of Appaloosa had appeared before her. The rustic city bustled with excitement as both ponies and buffaloes lived in peace. This settler community seemed to have grown since the last time she was here, and even though it wasn't the most modern of cities, anything was better than wondering the desert for another minute. Slowing to a stop Rainbow wearily walked up the train-station platform desperately hoping she wasn't late to board the awaiting train. “Yes yes yes yes yes. I made it.” Almost floating Rainbow approached the teller's window as her spirits began to soar. “One ticket please.” Victoriously looking at the young stallion behind the desk, it wasn't long until she was in Twilight's warm embrace. “That'll be 6 bits.” The brunette stallion blankly stared at the joyful mare as she realized she'd been beat. Her hooves swiftly glided along her body as her mind struggled to solve her new dilemma. In her rush to leave Ponyville she never thought to bring cash. Her face turned pale as her search proved fruitless. She didn't have any money, nor did she have any means of payment. “Ma'am, 6 bits?” “Well.” Shame grew in her eyes as she swallowed some of her pride. “Uhm. Is there anyway you can spot me for the ticket, just this one time? I don't seem to have any money on me.” A sheepish smile crept over her face as her question remained unanswered. “You see. It is really important for me to be on that train, and I have had a really rough couple of days. Could you just let me on the train? Please.” “Sorry ma'am, but I have to charge you.” Taking a page from Rarity's book, Rainbow seductively stared into his eyes as her lashes gently fluttered. “I would really appreciate anything you could do to get me on that train.” “Sorry ma'am. No bits, no tickets. The best I could do is maybe charge you the filly price.” “Arrrgh!” All of Rainbow's charm was released in a single outwards burst as she angrily stormed away from the counter. Where was she going to get money out here? “All aboard!” The conductor's voice sung out against the surrounding desert sending dread throughout the rainbow pegasus. Racing back to the counter Rainbow's voice screamed of desperation. “Please is there anyway you could let me on that train. I promise I will pay you back. Please.” “I'm truly sorry ma'am, but there is nothing I can do. You have to have a ticket.” The smokestack let out a monstrous scream as the metal beast slowly crept forward. Realizing her time was up her eyes grew wide in panic. Springing over the turnstile she charged down the wooden platform. Her hooves lightly kissed the floor as her wings pressed tight against her sides. As her vision narrowed on her target she could hear the teller screaming behind her. “Hey you can't do that! You need a ticket!” Ignoring his willful cries to stop, Rainbow's head swiveled around as her tongue playfully extruded from her lips. In the midst of her arrogance the cyan pony was unaware of the new obstacle in her path. Crash! With a great force the two ponies tumbled along the ground as the train disappeared off in the distance. “Oh, are you all right miss. I guess I should've paid a little better attention to where I was going.” “Aghh, horse apples!” Blinded by her anger Rainbow quickly climbed to her hooves and stormed off of the platform, ignoring all ponies around her. “What am I going to do now? Is anything gonna go my way?” Releasing a powerful sigh Rainbow quickly headed into town. Without any money she was left with walking. At least she could hit up the local saloon for some free cider. She might be into mares, but the stallions of this town didn't need to know that. “Rainbow Dash? Why, I haven't seen you since the whole buffalo incident. What brings you to Appaloosa?” Returning his hat atop his golden mane Braeburn graciously welcomed his friend as she joyfully trotted close behind. “I hope I didn't cause you to miss your train.” Slowly turning her head the image of the country pony came into view. Maybe Rainbow's luck hadn't ran out yet. Quickly changing her attitude Rainbow's voice grew in excitement. “Braeburn. You don't know how happy I am to see you. Oh, and sorry for running into you.” “Think nothing of it. So your looking...” Braeburn's words trailed off as he studied Rainbow's fatigued figure. “It's that bad uh?” “Now I wouldn't say that. You just look like you could use a tall glass of cider is all.” A playful smirk raced across his face as he directed the cyan mare toward his home. “And while we are at it. I'll take a look at your wing. It looks like you've been rode hard and put away wet.” “Lets just say its been a long couple of days.” Rainbow's hoof ran along her swollen wing as a surge of pain rushed through her bones. She knew it wasn't anything too serious, but she would hate to let what was a minor injury turn into something bad. “So how's things going here in Appaloosa. I see everypony is getting along alright. It is nice seeing the settlers and the buffalo living side by side.” “We've come a long way since our treaty, but not everypony has the same fondness towards the buffalo as you do.” Braeburn's voice grew soft as his thoughts focused on his love. Taking in a deep breath the blonde colt could feel his optimism slowly fade. “Maybe one day they will let us be together.” “Let whom be together?” Leaning into his view Rainbow tried her best not to over step her bounds. “Oh nothing.” His hoof playfully fidgeted with his bangs as his cheeks turned a reddish hue. “Apparently not. There is clearly something on your mind. So, why don't you tell me over that cider you were talking about.” Gently nudging him in the side the young pegasus lightly placed her hoof around his shoulder. She may not have been the best at comforting her friends, but she was always there to try. “I would like that. My house is just down the road from here.” Strolling through the dusty streets, Rainbow Dash couldn't help but lose herself to the familiar sights and sounds of the city. The smell of apples filled the air sending water cascading from her lips. Oh what she would give for a slice of their famous apple pie, especially since she hadn't eaten in a couple of days. The idea of having something cold to drink slowly drowned out all of Rainbow's thoughts as the two ponies grew closer to their destination. The red balcony and wooden shutters gave Braeburn's home a welcoming vibe that only a mare could create, but Rainbow could have sworn Braeburn was a bachelor. Unable to hold back her hunger any longer Rainbow briskly rushed through his front door and straight into his kitchen. “I hope you don't mind if I help myself. I was....” Screeching to a halt everything seemed to fall into place. “Oh my gosh! You're in love with Little Strongheart!” The room stood silent as Braeburn froze in fear. Sweat boiled down his face as his front hooves nervously danced in place. “What...What gave you that idea?” His throat swallowed hard as he struggled to maintain his cool. Was Rainbow's reaction one of support or like so many others in this town drawn from a place of pure ignorance and hate? “You don't have to hide it. Not only is she smart, but she is a very beautiful girl. I can see why you are attracted to her.” Casually returning from the kitchen with a cold glass of cider in one hoof and a slice of pie in the other, Rainbow was quick to notice the misery in Braeburn's stare. “Are you alright? You're looking a little pale.” “It's not that easy. We've been going out for a little while now, and let's just say some of the other settlers aren't as open to the idea of seeing a pony and a buffalo dating.” “Do you really care what anypony else thinks of your relationship? The only opinions you should worry about is your own and Strongheart's. Sorrow filled his every word as his heart writhed in agony. “It wouldn't be so bad if they just came at me, but it's they way they treat her that hurts the most. What if the world looked at the pony you loved with such animosity?” Rainbow stood motionless as his question sunk into her head. It was easy for her to tell somepony else to just ignore all of the hate, but could she turn that same attitude to her own situation? Though her ego still needed constant gratification from others it was Twilight's life that worried her the most. Twilight was a princess now. Not only did she have to lead a kingdom, but her every action was public scrutiny. It was one thing for Rainbow Dash to come out to the town of Ponyville, but to come out to all of Equestria was a different matter. “I understand how you feel. We can't help who we fall in love with. As long as you have each others love, I am certain you two can endure whatever the world has in stored. Hopefully in time I can safely say the same, but I do know I can always turn to my friends for strength.” Lightly placing her hoof around Braeburn's shoulder Rainbow fondly look into his green eyes. “Just know I am here for you as well.” “Thank you Rainbow Dash, but kind sentiment can only get us so far.” “I'm not going to tell you that there won't be any challenges, but I'm positive it's worth every second to be with her.” Hearing herself speak with such confidence softened her own worries. If Braeburn and Strongheart could survive the storm than why couldn't she? Wiping a tear from his eyes Braeburn attempted to change the subject. “I'm sorry Rainbow. I never asked what brought you into town.” “Speaking of love, I...” Digging deep Rainbow revealed everything that had transpired. Though she still feared his reaction, she knew that her story needed to be told. “And that about sums it up. Well?” Rainbow's head slightly tilted to the side as she awaited his response. “ Well, it sounds like we need to get you up those mountains.” Shooting her a warm grin, Braeburn slowly raised from his chair. “You're not alone Rainbow Dash. We will get you to Twilight.” Radiating with excitement Rainbow rocketed out of her seat. “Let's do...Owww!” Reminded of her still damaged wing Rainbow's tone returned to its normal arrogance. “I sure hope so. I don't think my wing can take much more.” “Yeah, let me take a closer look at that.” With each slight movement of her wing the cyan mare let out a tiny whimper. “I am no doctor, but it's safe to say it's not broken. I don't think you will be flying anytime soon though.” “I guess I'm walking up the Macintosh Hills.” “Nonsense, why don't you let me buy you a train ticket. I mean, we are practically family. Right?” “Really, you'd do that for me.” Carefully wrapping a bandage around her burnt feathers the young pegasus was overcome with joy. “Of course. We can continue our talk while we wait for the next train.” Time melted away as the two ponies carried on about their lives. Though it was hard to believe, Rainbow's journey was almost done. All that stood in her way was a peaceful ride into the mountains. Maybe it was a blessing she had missed that train. Running into Braeburn helped her through a lot of emotional baggage, and she was in a better place because of it. What ever happened between her and Twilight, they would be fine. Hearing a whistle bellow out across the beautiful desert the two friends rose from the small bench and prepared for their departure. “Braeburn, I can't thank you enough. I'm glad I ran into you. Seriously, I didn't have any money, and I really didn't want to walk.” “Twernt nothing, Your wing is looking a lot better. I'll bet you'll be flying before you know it.” “It looks worst than it feels, but it'll heal.” The train doors open revealing a small older pony. With a slight nod of his head they knew it was time. “Well this is you. It was nice visiting with you Rainbow Dash. I hope everything works out.” “Thanks again. I mean it. Until next time.” “Until then.” Sharing in a momentary embrace Rainbow soon found herself staring out of the window of the train. With the desert rushing passed she had nothing but time. “Twilight, I'm still coming. Not much longer now.” Steadily charging down the track, Rainbow's body started to relax as she sank deeper into the soft cushioned seat. It was nice for something to finally work out in her favor, but that didn't mean Rainbow needed to let her guard down. Climbing back into her seat Rainbow Dash lowered her head onto her hooves. With the steady rocking of the steam engine on the steal track Rainbow prepared herself for the final act. The time had arrived to prove her worth. The beauty of the Macintosh Hills hung just over the horizon along with a black cloud of smog. Rainbow Dash wasn't afraid of dragons, but that didn't make them any less of a threat. It was important that from this point on she stay as stealthy as possible. The last thing she needed to do was let some dragon make her its dinner. For now there was nothing left to do, but wait. > Chapter 5 > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- The smog grew thicker in the air as the train pulled closer to the ash covered mountain. Sitting up in her chair the young pegasus carefully studied the looming volcano as her hoof slowly moved towards the emergency brake. A small lump formed deep in her throat as her heart soared high in anticipation. It was time. Pulling down on the thin cable, a loud scream rang out along the track, sending the quaint cabin lurching to a sudden stop. Stepping down the metal steps, Rainbow's legs were stiff and unresponsive as she hobbled across the rough ground. The massive rock formation didn't seem that big when she arrived, but the closer she got to its base the larger it seemed. With the sun's rays shining against the darkening skies, the ash falling from the peak reminded Rainbow of snow in the way it drifted down and gently caressed her face. Was this the right place? More importantly how was she going to find Twilight here? Roooaarrrrr! Exploding out from behind the billowing tower of smoke, a blood red dragon rushed through the air. Its powerful yells shook the very earth Rainbow stood upon as she coward beneath her wings. Rainbow was always up for a fight, but she knew in her weakened state she didn't stand a chance against the awesome might of a dragon. When suddenly, the realization of what she needed to do raced into her mind. Standing amongst the many blends of gray's and brown's of the mountain, a cyan colored mare was an easy target to pick out. Moving fast, Rainbow's hoof carefully skimmed along the ash covered floor, gathering as much debris as possible. With it, she could smear a thin layer over her coat and darken her hue. Though it wasn't the greatest of plan, it was better than nothing. Slyly snaking her way towards the summit the young mare cautiously scanned her surroundings in constant fear of the looming threats above. It was unclear which scared her the most, the powerful dragons flying high above her head or the boiling volcano rumbling below. Though she would never admit it, she was terrified. Was she in over her head? Could it be that Rainbow Dash, the element of loyalty, was out matched. Feeling the ground crumble under her hooves Rainbow's fear grew exponentially, for one foul move could easily send her tumbling to her demise. Regaining her hoofing a slight grin crept across her face. Even though she was afraid, she always seemed to fight her hardest when standing off against her fears. If nothing else they kept her focused on the importance of the matter at hoof. As her ascent continued to steepen, the luxury of having soft dirt beneath her hooves soon faded as it was replaced with the hard, unforgiving touch of stone. Rainbow Dash was no mountain climber. To be fair she never needed to be. The very idea of life without flight was foreign to her. How could earth ponies live without knowing the wonders of the sky? Never being able to enjoy the wind rushing through their mane on a beautiful spring day astonished her. At least unicorns could use magic, but earth ponies didn't seem to have anything. It just wasn't a life Rainbow wanted to consider. “Rooarrr!” Jarring her back to reality, another dragon glided along the rocky floor. Oh, what she would give to find Twilight and get out of this mess, but as much as she longed for it to be easy, she knew that it was the challenge that made it all worth the while. With her eyes fixed on the furious beast circling the smoky skies, Rainbow stretched her hooves towards the edge of the cliff. Forcing herself up the peak of the hill her focus turned to the boiling lava below. The smell of sulfur filled the air as the radiating heat blurred her vision. Dragons of all shapes and colors had gathered around the fiery pits of the volcano as their collected greed manifested as a mountain of jewels. The many diamonds and gems shined against the incandescent light of the flowing magma as if it was a shrine deserving of royalty, but this wasn't the reason for this particular gathering. Having seen these migrations before, it was clear something was different. It would appear that love was in the air, for all of the dragons seemed to be in pairs. Scanning the whole of the crater, a tiny glimmer of light shone through the growing smog like a lantern glowing high a top a misty tower. As her eyes quickly searched for the source of the curious sight, her spirits slowly began to soar. Hiding amongst the basalt and brimstone was a pair of black binoculars. “Twilight?” Rainbow's voice remained soft as her whisper sailed from her lips. Her breath seemed bated as she pressed her body against the warm, rock surface and slowly scooted around the edge of the volcano. The narrowing path dissolved under her hooves as her lavender beauty emerged amongst the bland local. Unable to breathe the young pegasus stood in awe. Like Rainbow Dash, Twilight's mane was covered with ash and soot leaving her fur a smeared gray. Desperately longing to race to her side all she was capable of mustering was a single word. “Twilight?” Rainbow's faint whisper fell on deaf ears as she nervously took another step forward. Drawing on her collective courage her voice grew in intensity. “Twilight!” Rocketing into the air Twilight let out a horrified screech as she landed in a defensive stance. Gasping for air the young princess quickly lowered her guard as she realized there was no threat. “Rainbow Dash?! What are you trying to do? Kill me?” Anger pulsated from her eyes as she stared at the apologetic, cyan mare. “What are you even doing here?” Rainbow's knees turned to jelly as her head began to swirl. Just like quicksand, the more Rainbow fought the deeper she found herself lost in the muck. She couldn't breathe. She refused to let it end like this, especially after all she had been through. Letting out a long breath, Rainbow's shaking hoof lightly caressed Twilight's shoulder as she could feel her frustration soften. Lost in Twilight's purple eyes, Rainbow Dash spoke with absolute certainty as the words poured straight from her heart. “I love you Twilight Sparkle, and there is no where I'd rather be than here. I can only hope that you would let a foolish mare like me spend the rest of my days proving it to you.” Tears welled up in Twilight's eyes as her face flushed in embarrassment. “Rainbow Dash? I....” Boom! The earth trembled under the massive weight of the dragon as he towered over his prey. Lost in their emotions the two ponies had completely forgotten the mass gathering of dragons mere inches away, let alone the loud scream that was exhaled from Twilight's lungs. Like the final showdown of a western, the two mare stood motionless as warm smoke snaked across their necks. His tongue tauntingly licked his lips as a look of satisfaction covered the dragon's face. He knew there was nothing they could do to stop him. Then like a bolt of lightning, a dark green claw exploded out of the mist and into Twilight's body. Her frail frame rippled upon impact as she was sent crashing into a kaleidoscope of jewels. Before Rainbow could react the dragon had swooped up the still motionless princess, and rocketed into the sky. With Twilight dangling in the dragon's cold grasp Rainbow desperately attempted to chase after them, but with only a few thrusts of his powerful wings they were gone. With the dragon steadily disappearing into the black smog, Rainbow knew that without her wings there was no way she was going to catch the majestic beast. Charging along the ridge, her wings slowly extended as her teeth ripped away the cloth bandages concealing her burnt appendage. Now exposed, the coarse wind bathed her feathers with pain as it gingerly caressed her delicate skin. This didn't stop her though. Rainbow's never ending hooffall thundered through the hills as she swallowed her agony. With great speed and ferocity she forced her body off of the ground only to come smashing down onto the hard rock floor. Feeling a bruise form on her face she struggled back to her hooves. Adrenaline filled her veins as each attempt for flight ended with pain. Her torn wing burned like fire as her knees began to tremble. Despite her deep desire to continue her body was telling her different. Time was running out. With the strain on her wing becoming unbearable a final idea ignited in her mind as the cliff's edge appeared before her. The stretch of land between Rainbow and the cliff grew shorter by the minute as her body lost momentum. Knowing what she needed to do, Rainbow Dash gave one final push for the cliff's edge and leapt into the growing fog. Plummeting headlong into the dark abyss, her teeth clenched in suspense as the shrouded ground raced towards her. Then with a bright explosion of colors the shadows were ignited with light as her rainbow streak surged across the sky. Its radiant beauty shimmered with magnificent grace as the renewed pegasus led the charge against the darkness building around her. Screaming with excitement her cries of pain turned to pride as she raced towards her target. Before she knew it, she had climbed high above the savage drake. Hiding amongst the rising smoke of his nostrils Rainbow carefully planned her attack. Not only was the dragon stronger than her, but caution had to be administered for her every action could endanger Twilight. Speeding along the dragon's side Rainbow studied his every move. Almost as if they were performing an elegant ballet of aerial feats the beast and his pursuer danced and swirled amidst the dirty browns. With ever bank the dragon made Rainbow Dash wasn't far behind. Narrowly skimming through small gaps along the rocky exterior left little room for errors, but for a skilled flyer like Rainbow Dash it was a walk in the park. Having endured enough of this minor annoyance the creature slowly turned its massive green head and released a thick cloud of smog. As the smoke consumed the last bits of light the dragon was quickly shrouded in darkness. Rainbow's heart pulsed through her chest as her lungs screamed in pain. Barely able to open her eyes amongst the searing vapors she attempted to find some sign of hope, but all she could see was black. Escape seemed fruitless as she defensively hovered in anticipation. Time slowed to nothing when a sudden beam of light surged through the shimmering gloom followed by a radiating column of fire. Its flames rippled like water as the blazing inferno scorched passed her face, slicing through the darkness like a knife to butter. Narrowly missing her soft fur the young pegasus needed to act. Closing her eyes the cyan mare folded her wings tight against her body as her hooves formed to her side. Like a bullet firing from a gun she dropped into the abyss. One thing was certain, if this was her last dance then she wasn't about to sit it out. Plummeting through the sweltering inferno, the sweet sensation of fresh air rushed through Rainbow's feathers. Its cooling effect washed away the rotten stench of sulfur as she was once again able to breathe. Like a eagle triumphantly catching its prey, her cyan wings jettisoned from her sides as she sailed toward her assailant. With grace and beauty she dodged his attacks as she narrowly eluded the dragon's wrath. Her hooves skimmed along his scales as the warm air funneled around her body. Screaming at the top of her lungs, she forcefully impacted the monster's claw with her hind hoof, sending a jarring blow rippling through his hand. The powerful strike ripped Twilight's lifeless body from his cold grasp as she limply fell into the dark abyss. Twilight's mane whipped in the wind as every second seemed more important than the last. Rainbow's body trembled in anticipation as her hooves carefully wrapped around Twilight's smooth frame, sealing her in her warm embrace. Though her plans seemed to come to flourishion, there had to be a spanner in the machine. Flying was hard enough with her damaged wing, but with the extra weight of an alicorn dragging her down, flight was out of the question. What was Rainbow to do? Roar! With the dragon barreling down on them, every clap of his thunderous wings frightened the cyan mare as she desperately searched for a way out. Flying was no longer an option, and she definitely wasn't going to simply saunter down the hill. Hope had seemed to dwindle as the shear weight of the situation sank in. There was nothing left to do. Forcibly impacting the hard ground the cyan mare stumbled to her hooves, trying with all her might to carry the still unconscious alicorn on her back. Another bolt of fire scorched passed them as the dragon circled their location. As if it was playing with its food the dark green brute devilishly taunted its victim. The horrifying sight of their impending doom raced toward them with great speed and hatred. Fire welled in his eyes as smoke billowed from his huge nostrils. It was time to end this petty game of cat and mouse. Scurrying for their lives Rainbow Dash prepared for the worst as the ground beneath her hooves seemingly disappeared. As her body tumbled into the hidden cave, panic swept over her tired soul. A mighty gust of wind raced passed the opening of the cave as the still shaking mare clunge to her friend. Some how they were still alive. As her hooves quickly scanned her body in disbelief a sudden sigh of relief raced from her lungs. It didn't matter though. The dragon was sure to find them at any moment, and their only chance of escape was out cold. She had to try something, but what? Wrapping her hooves around Twilight's head, Rainbow lowered her mouth to the princess's ear. “Twilight? If you can hear me, you have to get up. I need you to get up. Please. I love you.” Her eyes began to glaze as her words seemed unanswered. The sound of the dragon's claw scratching upon the rock walls of the cave echoed throughout the small chamber as the threat grew ever closer. A tear rolled down her Rainbow's cheek as she lovingly pressed Twilight's face into her breast. “Well, This is it, Twi. I guess this is goodbye.” Leaning in close the cyan pegasus gently brushed Twilight's mane over her ears as she longingly stared down at her beloved. There was nothing else to do but wait. Closing her eyes Rainbow's crown lightly met Twilight's as their lips slowly touched. Twilight's cool, soft lips drove Rainbow's heart aflutter as the sweet taste of Twilight's cherry chap stick delighted her senses. Though she had fantasized about this moment in her head, she only wished it was under better circumstances. Where was her happy ending? Gently raising her head, Rainbow sensually opened her eyes to the glorious image of Twilight's alluring face. The violet hues of her eyes shined with beauty as they lovingly stared back from her waking slumber. ”It's nice to see you, too.” Twilight playfully shifted on the ground as she passionately looked up at her savior. “I love you, Rainbow Dash.” “I love you too, Twilight Sparkle.” Bam! The earth violently shook as the two lovers were ripped away from the emotional scene only to be forced back to the matter at hoof. The dragon's snarling jaws filled the entrance of the chamber as his tongue flicked inches away from them.“Aaaw! Let's get out of here!” Twilight's horn erupted with light as the dirt around them drifted into the air. Then with a flash of energy the small room was engulfed in light as the two ponies disappeared to safety. Whoosh! Collapsing onto the floor the two mares laid motionless as they stared up from the base of the mountain. The haunting beauty of the volcano shimmered in the distance as fresh air danced along their bodies. The setting sun's rays lightly warmed their skin as time calmly slipped away. They made it. They were safe. Taking a second to regain their composure Rainbow's hooves tightly wrapped around the alicorn's frame. “Twilight you are the coolest. I can't tell you all of the things I went through to see you. So, how about we hop onto the next train back to Ponyville, and leave this awful place forever?” “While I am flattered that you are here, and I really appreciate the grand gesture,” Slyly slipping a small peck on Rainbow's lips Twilight was quick to return to point. “But I can't just leave. I promised Celestia I would study the dragon's mating habits this migration, and its my duty to see this through. I mean, the next time this will happen isn't for another hundred years.” Rainbow's head lowered in sadness as Twilight's words sank in. “Well if you are going to stay here, then so am I. Besides there's no where else I'd rather be than by your side. If, that is all right with you?” “It would be my pleasure.” The two mares shared a warm embrace before they started back up the mountain. “As long as you are a little more quiet this time.” “Yeah, sorry about that. I was really happy to see you.” Watching as Twilight started up the path Rainbow paused to take in all that had happened. She had faced her fears, and love was her reward. All she had to do now was spend the rest of her days proving it to her. “Hey Twilight? There is one thing I didn't get.” “What's that Rainbow?” “Why didn't you bring Spike with you. I know you were probably upset, but with it being the dragon migration I'd figured you would have probably brought him along.” “I love Spike to death, but the last thing I needed is a growing dragon getting any ideas.” “Oh. I see what you mean.” “That doesn't mean, we can't.” Twilight's head slowly turned as she seductively gestured up the hill. “I really, really love you Twilight Sparkle.” Rainbow's cheeks shined a bright red as her wings rocketed into the air. “I know Rainbow Dash. I know.” The sun set on the two mares as they snuggled against each other. With the glowing lava illuminating the scene, everything shimmered with beauty. To them, it was a sight of pure fantasy. What was stolen in that single moment had been returned. Rainbow had found her heart, and along the way she had found herself.
