> Something New > by KingNyroc15 > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- > Chapter 1 > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ponies in Ponyville don't tend to go camping very often in fear of what might lurk out of the Everfree to get them. Some ponies just like the comfort of their own homes as compared to a tent. Others don't care about what might happen; they simply want to have fun with their friends and/or family. One such group decided to spend a few days camping in the Everfree. With how many of them there were, they felt confident against any animal but hoped they wouldn't find anything hostile. Twilight Sparkle, Rainbow Dash, Pinkie Pie, Applejack, Chroma, Soren, Shayden, and Nyra found a small clearing inside the forest to set up camp for the night. Rarity and Fluttershy would have accompanied them, but the former had projects to work on and the latter was afraid of the Everfree in general. After setting up in the clearing, the group sat around a made fire and told stories. Rainbow told a ghost story that scared only Twilight and Pinkie, then Shayden spoke of an urban legend in his version of Equestria that involved the dead body of a mare roaming a town, wanting her daughter back. Soren kept quiet because he knew 'the mare' was Nightingale and 'the daughter' was Ruby. "Soren, do you have any stories?" Twilight asked. "As a matter of fact, I do. I could tell you all about the trip Rainbow, Shayden, and I went on recently." "You all explored the country, didn't you?" "Yep. Some interesting things happened. Anyone wanna hear it?" With no objections heard, Soren began his tale of their double date. "It all started when I met Shayden's marefriend for the first time..." -------------- Ponyville can have boring days just like any other town. Sometimes ponies trot about town looking for those select few they have heard about; the few that usually have something happening that day. The Elements of Harmony are one example. There's also the white alicorn that hangs out with them. Recently, that alicorn also brought a dark-colored unicorn, who has a prosthetic, into Ponyville. Very few will give him strange looks as if he doesn't fit in. The unicorn either doesn't notice the looks or simply doesn't care. He has a pretty normal life now compared to his old one in his Equestria. He studies, has friends, has hobbies, and recently got a marefriend. They have been dating for almost two months now, and today she was visiting him yet again. Shayden and his beloved made their way from the train station towards his house to spend the day together, maybe even the night. It is a little inconvenient that they have to take a train just so they can see each other, but she has yet to complain. Therefore, why should Shayden? He smiled as he glanced at his happy earth pony marefriend. Her deep blue coat in combination with her white mane that had a single black stripe made his heart melt. She was gorgeous. He would have to thank Soren again for giving him this second chance at life. "Hey Shayden!" Speak and he shall appear, Shayden thought as he turned to his left. Soren trotted up to them. His smile grew bigger upon seeing the mare next to Shayden. "Not to be quick to judge, but is this your marefriend? I saw the way you were smiling at her," he slightly teased. "Yes, Soren. We're a couple. Is there anything you—" "Shayden," Soren interrupted while sounding disappointed in his friend. "How long have you been keeping this pretty mare a secret?" Soren nudged Shayden's side, receiving a giggle from the mare. "Months away from you. From what Chroma says, I can't trust you near mares." "I don't flirt that much." "I trust Chroma's word more than yours." "You need to lighten up." "I'm light enough. I do not need my coat turning as white as yours." Soren rolled his eyes then turned to the mare and extended a hoof. "Hello. My name is Soren Melody, friend of Shayden's who convinced him to live in Ponyville. What's your name?" "Winter Solstice, astrologer and astronomer. I can be as serious as Shayden when I need to be, but I don't mind having a little fun." Soren was happily surprised. She sounded well-educated like she could be from Canterlot. "Astrologer, huh? Makes sense with your constellation cutie mark." That got a look from Shayden. "So you can predict the future?" "I can take an estimated guess based on the information I am given." "Are you familiar with star sight?" "Yes. 'When the stars open themselves to open-minded,'" she recited. "Do you have this gift?" "Yep, although it hasn't happened in quite a long—" Shayden slightly leaned in between them. "Ahem. I hate to interrupt your conversation, Winter, but there is something I wanted to show you." Winter apologized and said goodbye to Soren. The couple turned around and began to leave, but Soren wasn't done. Before the couple got too far out of earshot, he said one last thing. "Shayden, you should have accepted the invitation to travel Equestria with Rainbow and I. I bet you would have a great time." Winter looked at Shayden. "You refused to travel with your friends? Why?" "Mostly because you were scheduled to show up today." "We didn't know that," Soren added to Winter. "He decided to keep you a secret from me and probably the others. I wouldn't get mad at him for that though. I just want him to open up more." "I am open enough for Winter, and—" "I think a traveling vacation is a great idea," Winter interrupted. Shayden looked surprised. "But..." "Come now, Shayden. This could be a great experience for you. Plus, it would give me the chance to get to know your friends." "Yeah, Shayden," Soren said. "It could be a double date." "Oh? This Rainbow is your marefriend? Wait...is she Rainbow Dash?" Soren answered yes to both questions. "I know her and the other Elements of Harmony live in Ponyville, and I heard about her winning the Young Fliers Competition. I would love to meet her." "We could go see her now if you want. We could talk about the trip too." "But I haven't agreed to going on the trip!" Shayden exclaimed. Winter Solstice smiled at him then grabbed one of his hooves. "Please?" She kissed him on the cheek. "It could be fun." Shayden had to consider this. He wanted to spend time with Winter alone, but she was looking at him hoping for a yes. However, if his first meeting with Soren showed him anything, it's that nothing is ever normal around that alicorn. "One question for Soren before I answer." "Ok?" Soren raised an eyebrow. "Has anything bad happened to you or your friends recently?" "Oh, you're only worried about that? Ha, if anything were to happen, I could teleport you and Winter away. No, nothing has happened recently. What's your answer?" "Guess I don't have a choice. Winter and I would like to accompany you and Rainbow on your trip." Soren beamed. Shayden only wanted to do this for Winter, not because he wanted to go. "Awesome! Let's go tell Rainbow!" Soren trotted toward the Ponvyille Library with a smile, getting a smile from Winter and a sigh from Shayden in return. It didn't take them long to reach the giant tree. The front door was open, so the trio entered and saw Rainbow hovering over a map that Twilight was pointing to on the center table. "Are those three fine?" Twilight asked Rainbow, who looked at the entrance upon hearing hooves. "Yep. I'd say those three ponies are fine alright. Good thing I'm already dating one." "What?" She looked up at Rainbow, but the pegasus had already flown over to the doorway to greet Soren with a hug and kiss. "What are two girls doing?" Soren asked her. "Just picking out spots for the trip. Twilight showed me three good ones. We'll take the map with us." "Good. Also, Shayden and his marefriend would like to join us." "Now he wants to come with? What changed his mind?" "That would be me," Winter replied. "Hello, Rainbow Dash. My name is Winter Solstice. I've heard quite a lot about you." "Yeah. I'm kind of a big deal around here." Soren, Twilight, and Shayden simultaneously rolled their eyes, but Shayden was the only one who didn't smile. "So you two are dating?" The earth pony nodded. Rainbow pulled her in close. "Not to be rude but...what's it like dating someone who's so boring?" "Hmph, well that was rude, Rainbow Dash, even if you didn't mean it to be." "Rainbow, quite antagonizing the mare," Soren interrupted. "So sorry about that. Just ignore any negative comments from her, Winter." "I'll forgive it this time, but I won't stand by and let someone insult my coltfriend." "Really, Rainbow? That's what you said?" Soren was unimpressed. He knew she liked to joke about Shayden, but saying it to his marefriend, whom she just met? Really? "What? I was curious." "Just try not to be rude. They want to come with us. No sense in creating tension. This trip is supposed to be relaxing and fun." "Maybe for the three of you," Shayden muttered. "Shayden, please. At least try to have fun." Soren walked over to the map and Twilight, who had remained silent throughout the conversation. "So, Twilight, what's the plan?" "Well Rainbow insisted that you guys go to Manehattan first, but I told her that Fillydelphia has great things to see as well. That'll be the first stop before Manehattan. Also, for your last stop, I suggested Neighagra Falls. From there, you could catch a train ride to Canterlot then back home." "Sounds great. What do you two think?" He looked at Winter and Shayden, the former speaking first. "I personally haven't been to Manehattan or Neighagra Falls, so I'm up for it. Shayden?" "Neighagra Falls sounds peaceful. About how long will this trip be? Winter, are you sure you aren't missing anything back home if you leave for at least a week." She grabbed his hoof. "Nope. I have everything I need right here." Shayden slightly smiled then Winter kissed his cheek. "Do you want to go? We don't have to." "I have already made up my mind. We're going." She nodded. "Ok then," Soren continued. "We're not leaving today; we actually don't have a set date. Just bring whatever you can carry, but carry lightly. We aren't spending more than a day or two at each stop. We can meet at the train station tomorrow morning if that's fine." "I'm not needed for anything important for about a month. The semester at the university ended." "You're a student? Where?" Twilight asked. "I'm actually a professor at Fillydelphia University. The semester ended, so the students have a month break." "Wow. What's your specialty?" "Astronomy. Judging by the library and your curiosity, I take it your a scholar, or at least someone who loves to read?" "Yes to both! Actually, earlier today I was—" Soren tuned out the two mares and walked over to Shayden. "This is already going swimmingly. Come on, crack a smile!" "I am smiling," Shayden said with a neutral expression. "On the inside." "Oookay. Winter..." The mare turned around. "How about you and Shayden get ready for tomorrow? I'm sure Rainbow and I have to do the same." "Oh we have much more to do~" the pegasus grinned. "Oh, Luna help me," Twilight groaned. "I'm sure Soren would love if Luna 'helped' us." "Stop it. Just go. Go. Shoo." Soren and Rainbow laughed as the four of them were rushed out of the library. They then parted ways to prepare for tomorrow. > Chapter 2 > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- The next morning had cool weather with a slightly cloudy sky. Winter and Shayden were already at the train station and have been waiting for Soren and Rainbow for a decent bit. They weren't running late for the train but they were supposed to be here by now. After many more minutes of waiting, Shayden and Winter saw the other couple approaching in the distance. Both wore saddlebags and a smile on their faces. The patient couple soon heard their conversation when Soren and Rainbow were within hearing distance. "...how she still had that irritated expression even though that happened yesterday," Soren was saying. "Yeah. I made her blush big time with that joke about you and Luna." The two now entered the train station. "I see you two are reliving what happened yesterday," Shayden commented. "Only because we visited her again before coming here. Soren had to grab something." Shayden looked at the alicorn, who began rummaging through his bags. He soon pulled out a smaller bag with a picture of a golden Bit on it. "Had to make sure I had enough money for the trip. I hope you all brought some too to help out." Shayden and Winter nodded, the latter the only one smiling. Rainbow scoffed to herself. "Relax," Soren whispered to her, "he'll open up. Twilight made sure of that. Our second stop, remember?" "What are you two whispering about?" Winter asked with a suspicious glance. "Oh nothing. Just had to remind Rainbow to play nice. Is the train ready to go?" "They said anyone can board, but it won't be leaving for another twenty minutes. They have to make sure they are prepared." "That's fine. Let's find a space then." Shayden and Winter stood up and put on their own saddlebags. The four ponies entered the train; the ride would take at least a day. --------------- "I don't think I comprehended how long we will be gone until now," Shayden said randomly as the four of them enjoyed lunch in the dining car. While chewing his food, Soren nodded. He swallowed then spoke. "Tomorrow we will arrive in Fillydelphia; we'll spend a day there. The next day, we take a carriage toward Manehattan, but we'll have to walk the last third of the distance. In Manehattan, we'll spend two days exploring and having a good time. The next day we take a train to Neighagra Falls to spend some of the day there. Lastly, we catch the soonest train back to Ponyville, where we should arrived sometime in the next day." Winter counted to herself. "If all goes according to plan, this trip will be...at least seven days long," she said. Shayden was a little surprised. "I thought we would be away longer," he commented before taking a bite of his own food. Soren shook his head. "It's kind of long but not a month long like you were probably thinking." Winter gave a small laugh. "Sounds like you two have been planning this out for awhile." "Nah," Rainbow said. "We made up the plan like three days ago. We invited Shayden, then went to see Twilight after that to begin planning. As you can tell, we're pretty good at thinking on the spot." "That's good. Can't say I'm not at least a little impressed." She paused so she could change the subject. "So is there anywhere specific in any of our destinations that you two wanted to see?" Rainbow had continued eating, so Soren answered. "Not really. Maybe somewhere in Manehattan, but we'll be mostly exploring. That's the fun of the trip. Exploring towns to see what they have. Didn't you say you work in Fillydelphia?" She nodded. "I haven't been working there for very long. I'm studying along my students, but I study more advanced materials, of course. I love my job, the city...and the ponies I have met." She put her hoof over Shayden's. "Shayden says you two have been dating for a few months. How did you two meet?" "He came to Filly to research nebulous magic. The public library didn't have anything on the subject because the only book available was in the University. Our university. Out library is open to all if a class isn't scheduled to be there. Honestly, you might as well put in a request to have the book transferred to the public library for the day, but Shayden was curious about the school. He told me there were no such things as universities from where he came from." Soren looked at Shayden, who was merely letting Winter tell the tale. Has he told her of the alternate Equestria? "I was in the library as well, researching my own hobbies. I found myself interested in the dark unicorn that was so focused on his book that he was practically shooting daggers with his eyes." She giggled when Shayden looked away in slight embarrassment. "I walked over to him and managed to strike a conversation. Not many ponies research such advanced magic as smoke or cloud. It's hard to manipulate. As we spoke, I was taken aback by his politeness and intelligence. He called me Miss even though we are around the same age. "From there, the conversations became more general. We learned about each other. Pretty soon, we were spending time together at lunch or stargazing. I showed him the basic constellations, to which he said it was fairly cloudy where he was from. Before we knew it, we were dating and have been happy ever since." Her and Shayden shared a kiss. Soren noticed the small smile on his unicorn friend's face. "So how did you and Rainbow meet?" Winter asked. The couple exchanged glances. Soren turned back to Winter and Shayden, who also didn't know the full story of the two. "Heheh, it's a long and...interesting story. Are you sure you want to hear it? Actually, how well do you know my reputation?" Winter raised a hoof then pointed to it every time she named something. "Battle of the Nyrs..." Soren flinched then cursed to himself for reacting that way still. "Confronting the Elementals, confronting Queen Chrysalis, confronting Nightmare Moon reincarnate, and finally pretending to be dead and going off to do whatever it was. Only your friends know what you truly did." Soren and Rainbow sat there, mouths agape. How the hay did she know all that?! "She does her research," Shayden said as if reading their minds. "So I'm sure your tale couldn't be worse than all of those things, some of which even I am amazed you did." Soren cleared his throat. "Very well. It all started on a train similar to this actually..." He explained everything from Rainbow's sudden kiss on the train, her killing Nyra on accident, when Soren and Cain were in the same body after the Battle of the Nyrs, then finally how he at last chose her as his special somepony. ------------ The train ride went smoothly. Not many passengers were present; Shayden found that to be a bonus. He preferred a more quiet environment; quite the opposite of Rainbow Dash, who grew increasingly bored with the quiet train ride. Soren entertained her by singing with her, which only occupied her for an hour or two. 'It isn't the same without the guitar,' she explained. Luckily for her, the day was just about over. Everyone had a peaceful sleep that night; even Soren and Shayden didn't experience the occasional nightmare. Most of the next morning was spent looking outside as the landscape rolled by. They arrived in Fillydelphia a little past noon. The city wasn't as grand as Manehattan but it was definitely a sight to behold. From the train station, it looked as though Fillydelphia was comprised of tall buildings, quaint houses, and various stores. Winter pointed to the university in the distance, the top half of it being seen above the smaller buildings. Soren and Winter led the group, with the former pointing out things of interest and the latter being the group's escort. Winter led them down a particular street of interest. They quickly found out why. The street was in between buildings with no doors leading into them and was occupied by nothing but street performers. At least a dozen ponies performed their own talents or hobbies in order to receive tips or simply to have fun. As he looked at the various acts (a juggler with eight balls, a balancer on top of junk that stacked easily five yards tall, and an artist speed painting), Soren also heard the other acts. Musicians weren't uncommon on this street, but one particular instrument assaulted his ear drums. One pony was playing a simple song on his guitar, but certain notes were sour. "There ya go, buddy," he said to the musician, tuning the guitar with magic. The musician felt the tug of magic then looked up at the alicorn. He then pointed to his ear, shook his head, and bowed slightly to Soren. A deaf musician? Not impossible but it sucks to not know when your instrument is out of tune. Maybe Twilight or Luna can invent something to help. "You said you are a singer and a musician," Winter said after they passed the pony. "Care to demonstrate your talent?" "Is there a music store nearby?" Winter pointed in the direction and began leading them there. > Chapter 3 > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Shayden looked up at the three-floored music store. "Why are we here again?" Soren opened his mouth to answer, but Rainbow blurted out something first. "You're too boring!" Shayden raised an eyebrow at her and Winter scowled at the rude mare. "At least you're blunt about it." Shayden replied. Soren intervened. "Not the wording I would have used but yes...you need to have fun. Different kinds of fun that you're not used to. And he's not boring, Rainbow. Maybe to you, but you don't have to be rude about it." Rainbow apologized to Shayden half-heartedly. He accepted nonetheless. "Anyway..." Winter started slowly then normally. "This is the only music store in town. You're bound to find whatever instrument you need inside. Drums and percussion are on the top floor, stringed instruments on the floor below, and equipment and various smaller instruments are on the ground floor." "Sounds like paradise," Soren and Rainbow said simultaneously as they ogled the store. Winter Solstice chuckled at the two. They looked like they were about to open presents on Hearths Warming Day. The group entered the store and were surprised to see how many ponies were inside. Even though it was the only music store in Fillydelphia, it was still unexpectedly popular. There was chatter and music in the air, vibrations thumped softly from above, and singing could be heard from the first and second floor. Soren and Rainbow almost squeed in delight. "To the second floor!" Soren shouted as he and Rainbow ran away, both disappearing with a poof of smoke. Shayden tilted his head. "What? How is that even possible?" "You're questioning why they can run unnaturally fast while I'm wondering how Soren can be serious yet extremely playful at the same time." "It's not that difficult." "Then you should try being as playful as them," she smiled while trotting to the staircase. Shayden rolled his eyes and followed her. On the second floor, Soren and Rainbow awed over the many guitars, cellos, violins, and harps. The floor was separated into different rooms with a sign above each doorway showing what was in it. There was one for guitars specifically, one for classical instruments, one for recording, and the last (the one they stood in now) was for purchasing instruments and needed equipment like picks and bows. Soren and Rainbow trotted through the cashier room and into the guitar room. Shayden and Winter entered behind them within the minute. Soren grabbed the first guitar that looked appealing. It was a Fender Magiccaster with a basic black and white finish. After plugging it into a nearby amp, Soren faced all three of his friends. "Any suggestions? Genre? Specific song?" Rainbow raised her hoof with a smirk. He nodded to her. "You're a showoff, so make them feel." Soren smiled. Winter was puzzled by the derogatory term Rainbow used to describe Soren, but she thought nothing of it due to his lack of reaction. "I made this song for a specific pony." Soren began with a few light notes, which resonating within the decent sized room. A few ponies watched him play. They were surprised when he began singing as well. Oh life, it's bigger It's bigger than you And you are not me The lengths that I will go to The distance in your eyes Oh no, I've said too much I've said enough That's me in the corner That's me in the spotlight Losing my religion Trying to keep up with you And I don't know if I can do it Oh no, I've said too much I haven't said enough I thought that I heard you laughing I thought that I heard you sing I think I thought I saw you try Every whisper Of every waking hour I'm choosing my confessions Trying to keep an eye on you Like a hurt, lost and blinded fool, fool Oh no, I've said too much I've said enough Consider this Consider this, the hint of the century Consider this, the slip That brought me to my knees, failed What if all these fantasies come Flailing around Now I've said too much I thought that I heard you laughing I thought that I heard you sing I think I thought I saw you try But that was just a dream That was just a dream That's me in the corner That's me in the spotlight Losing my religion Trying to keep up with you And I don't know if I can do it Oh no, I've said too much I haven't said enough I thought that I heard you laughing I thought that I heard you sing I think I thought I saw you try But that was just a dream Try, cry, why try That was just a dream Just a dream Just a dream, dream When Soren finished, he unplugged the guitar then propped it against the amp. The few ponies that were watching stomped the floor or clapped in applause. Winter sniffed. "That was beautiful. Was that meant for somepony you know?" "Thankfully, no. I've felt enough pain when my friends get injured. There was a situation in Canterlot that Twilight Sparkle and Princess Celestia had to deal with. An ex-guard named Royal Nexus was helping an earth pony mare named Obsidia. She had strange powers like mind reading, telekinesis, and seeing the past of anypony. He formed a bond with her, and I made that song when I learned that the two shared a intimate moment before completely disappearing. Star-crossed lovers." "Do you make songs about your experiences quite often?" Soren nodded. "I...I'd rather not talk about them. Maybe one day I'll tell you, but it could take all day. I met Shayden toward the end of my adventures." It was now Shayden's turn to nod. "Anyway, why don't I lighten the mood?" Soren randomly began singing another song. The unexpected is often the most entertaining after all. I make them good girls go bad I make them good girls go Good girls go bad Good girls go bad I know your type Yeah daddy's lil' girl Just take a bite Let me shake up your world Cause just one night couldn't be so wrong I'm gonna make you lose control She was so shy 'Til I drove her wild I make them good girls go bad I make them good girls go bad You were hanging in the corner With your five best friends You heard that I was trouble but you couldn't resist I make them good girls go bad I make them good girls go Good girls go bad Good girls go bad Good girls go As Soren sang the first part of the song, Winter had a big smile on her face as if she was about to laugh. Soren motioned for her to join in, so she rolled her eyes and did so. [Winter]: I know your type Boy you're dangerous Yeah you're that guy I'd be stupid to trust But just one night couldn't be so wrong You make me want to lose control [Soren]: She was so shy 'Til I drove her wild I make them good girls go bad I make them good girls go bad [Winter]: I was hanging in the corner With my five best friends I heard that you were trouble but I couldn't resist [Soren]: I make them good girls go bad I make them good girls go Good girls go bad Good girls go bad Good girls go bad "Don't encourage him, Winter," Shayden groaned. However, when he thought things couldn't get worse, the two colts and three mares in the room joined in as well. [Boys]: Oh she got a way with them boys in the place Treat 'em like they don't stand a chance [Girls]: And he got a way with them girls in the back Actin' like they too hot to dance [Boys]: Yeah she got a way with them boys in the place Treat 'em like they don't stand a chance [Girls]: And he got a way with them girls in the back Actin' like they too hot to dance [Soren and Winter]: I make them good girls go bad I make them good girls go Them good girls go bad Good girls go bad [Winter]: I was hanging in the corner With my five best friends I heard that you were trouble but I couldn't resist [Soren]: I make them good girls go bad I make them good girls go bad I make them good girls go Good girls go bad Good girls go bad Good girls go Everypony began cheering and whooping. Shayden could only stare and think, 'Why does something always happen with you around, Soren?' When the laughing Soren and Winter rejoined Rainbow and Shayden, the dark unicorn glared at the white alicorn. "If I didn't owe you my life, alicorn," he accentuated, "I would end yours." Shayden knew that calling Soren by his race bugged him. "Oh you! You know just the right buttons to push," Soren teased. "What do you mean you owe Soren your life?" Winter asked. "I'll tell you in private. It's just that I owe him for giving me this new life." Soren wanted to change the subject. "Also, Shayden, unfortunately for you, calling me 'alicorn' doesn't bother me that much anymore." "Being called an alicorn used to bother you?" Winter inquired. "I guess. I mostly hated how evildoers were SO high and mighty that they couldn't say my name. They always called me alicorn. But I figured out that that was their way to degrade me." "I would really like to know about your adventures." "In due time. How about we find a hotel, get something to eat, then look for more interesting spots to see?" No one complained, so the group left the music store, leaving the energy alive in there. > Chapter 4 > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- After eating at a packed restaurant, the group walked around Fillydelphia for the remainder of the day. Winter showed them the public library and parts of Fillydelphia University. They decided to see a movie at the local cinema but were slightly disappointed by the end. The popular thing to complain about was why the mare ended up with the hunky stallion when she clearly loved the nerdy one more. They'll never fully understand Applewood producers. At the end of the day, the four ponies found a nice hotel to spend the night in. Unfortunately, even though it was nighttime, none of them were tired. Luckily, Rainbow had an idea to pass the time. She rummaged through her saddlebags then pulled out a deck of cards. Everyone began playing Prodder; Shayden had to learn how to play. The last few hours of the night were spent sitting at the circular table in their apartment, playing card games. The apartment was nice and fairly spacious. From the entrance, there was a small kitchen area in the left corner and a living room area on the left side as well. There was a single blue couch and a matching chair on both sides which faced each other from across the couch. The couch faced two doors leading into separate bedrooms. Both rooms had queen sized beds, a nightstand next to said beds, and a bathroom that was actually in between both bedrooms. The bathroom connected the bedrooms, and it only had a shower instead of both a bath and a shower. Once their Prodder night was over, the couples cleaned up any mess they made, said their goodnights, then entered a bedroom. Soren and Rainbow took the one on the left, and Shayden and Winter took the one on the right. As Soren and Rainbow became comfy and faced each other in bed, Rainbow wanted to ask an interesting question before attempting to sleep. "Do you think they'll...you know?" she asked while keeping her eyes closed. Soren knew exactly what she was referring to. He responded while also having closed eyes. "Knowing Shayden, no. We don't even know if they have done it before. They haven't been dating that long." "Yeah. Also, he's too serious and polite for fun." "Nooo...he's too serious and polite to do it with other ponies in the apartment." Rainbow laughed softly then proceeded to sleep, as did Soren. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ----------------- The Everfree Forest ----------------- "...and that was only the first stop," Soren explained to his friends around the fire. "Tomorrow I'll continue the story. We've had enough storytelling for one night." Pinkie and Nyra aww'd in disappointment. "I agree," Twilight said. "It's getting late, and I for one am getting..." She yawned. "Tired." A few other ponies also wanted to sleep, so they made their way to their tents. Pairs of two shared tents to lessen the carrying weight of everything. Twilight Sparkle was with Applejack, Rainbow Dash was with Soren, Pinkie Pie was with Nyra, and Chroma was with Shayden. Most everyone slept fairly well that. Shayden had a nightmare of an exploding building and a now-sooty filly watching it. Soren merely had a troubling dream that made him shift now and again, but Rainbow calmed him by turning around to hold him. Twilight and Applejack were the first to fall asleep, and Pinkie and Nyra were by far the last. The hyper pink pony and happy bat pony stayed up a bit longer conversing about various and random things, like sweets, holidays, pranks, and certain ponies. The next morning, Twilight suggested that they all remain in their current campsite in order to walk back to Ponyville after Soren finished his story. Everyone agreed, ate their packed breakfast, and continued to listen to Soren's tale. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ During the next morning after the two couples found their hotel, they gathered around the table to eat breakfast. No one really said anything until everyone was done eating. Soren looked to Shayden. "So...did you two do it?" Shayden's eyebrow flinched a bit from the sudden question. "Did you hear a noise last night?" "No." "There you go. Have you ever heard of a soundproofing spell?" "I think Vinyl might know one. Why do you ask?" "Because I know the spell, and you should have used it on that one night you were with four mares." Winter giggled, but her expression changed to slight shock upon entirely comprehending what Shayden said. Soren was with four mares? "My night with Luna, Rainbow, Nyra, and Pinkamena?" "Yes. Also, that sounds like the beginning of a bad joke. A bat pony, a lunar princess, an alicorn Time Lord, a cocky pegasus, and a psychopath enter the same bedroom and try to tell each other that they're normal." Everyone but Shayden laughed. "So you CAN make jokes!" Rainbow exclaimed in between laughs. "What made you think I couldn't?" "Uhh..." Rainbow stopped laughing and embarrassingly rubbed the back of her head. She then realized something. "Wait, so does that mean you and her actually...?" "No comment," the unicorn answered. "Mhm. We did," Winter nodded, smiled, and blushed. Shayden looked at her. "You were very quick to admit that." "What? It's true. Why hide it? We're all friends here." "Also, you two can put your wings down," Shayden commented, looking at the other couple. Soren and Rainbow looked at each other's wings then shrugged. They weren't in public, so it didn't really matter to them. "We'll just show off our wingspan to you two," Soren joked. "I hear it's a good way to impress the ladies." "Only for pegasi," Winter countered, "but I'm sure you knew that. I must say that alicorn wingspans are rather impressive though. Soren, your wings are slightly bigger than a grown stallion's. How strong are they?" Soren slightly blushed from the praise. "I don't know. Back before the Battle of the Nyrs, Rainbow Dash was helping me strengthen them with workouts, but I stopped after the battle. I just use them to fly and race Rainbow now." "You can match Rainbow's speed?" "Only on a good day." "Winter, don't get him started on bragging again, please," Shayden interjected. "He shows off enough on stage." "Hey, if I have the skills to back up, why wouldn't I show off a little? Plus, the crowd loves it." Shayden couldn't argue with that. The conversations became more general from there. They talked about what kind of cool things were in the music store, the other stops they made in town, and what they expected to find in Manehattan. When noon came around, the four gathered their belongings and left the hotel. They waited for the next carriage going to Manehattan. Soren and Shayden were pretty impressed by the strength of the two stallions pulling the four of them at decent speed. They would be sure to tip them nicely. The trip itself wasn't that bad. A cool breeze swept into the carriage through a slightly open window, the road wasn't too rocky but had a bump here and there, and Rainbow managed to get the working stallions to converse with them for a few minutes. Obviously they had to take two breaks on the long run. Manehattan was easily half a day away by carriage. After reaching a literal fork in the road, the four ponies stepped off of the carriage, thanked the two stallions, then gave them a tip. The two nodded and trotted away back to Fillydelphia. Shayden did not envy a job that required one to run back and forth between cities. He was jealous of their endurance though. As the group walked the remaining distance to Manehattan, they enjoyed the view of the landscape and the cool, sunny weather. Rolling hills and farmland populated most of land between the two cities. The group even managed to receive a small sample of the produce from the farmers that they passed. All of them agreed that this trip already felt very nice, even if Shayden refused to admit it out loud. Soren decreased his walking speed so Winter and Rainbow could speak with each other while he spoke with Shayden. "How are you liking the trip? Admit it, you're having fun." The unicorn shook his head with a small smile. "I won't say the trip is boring, but I am enjoying time with Winter and you." "Not Rainbow?" "With her, I'm having as much fun as one could have with the pony that mocks them a lot." "She does that to get a reaction from you. She wants you to open up and to not be a statue or a wannabe Royal Guard. I can get her to stop teasing you if you want." Shayden looked at the two mares chatting happily in front of him. "If Winter can have fun with her, I can at least forgive her for the teasing." He paused then looked at the grinning Soren. "Don't you dare twist the meaning of 'having fun.'" "Shayden, you know me well enough that what you're requesting isn't possible." The two actually shared a small laugh. "You have to admit though...you came a long way from when I first met you." "I was thinking about that myself actually." He looked toward the horizon; the sun was beginning its descent. Manehattan was also in the distance. "I can't thank you enough for this. My Equestria was my born home, but it can't compare to my home now." "I was just doing what was right, even if I went a little crazy to get us out of that mess." "Excuse me, Shayden, did I hear that correctly?" The two looked at Winter and Rainbow staring at them, a raised eyebrow etched on the former's face. "Your Equestria as opposed to our Equestria?" Soren and Shayden gulped nervously. "What do you mean by that?" "Do you want to tell her alone?" Soren whispered in his ear. "Rainbow and I will walk ahead of you two." Shayden wasn't sure. He knew he would have to tell her at some point, but now he had a feeling that she's going to think he's either crazy or lying. "I'm here for confirmation of your story. She can't disbelieve it if both of us have the same story, especially if we didn't plan out the story before you told her." Shayden nodded then Soren trotted up to Rainbow while Winter walked alongside Shayden. The remainder of the walk consisted of the sunset in the background, Shayden revising the story of his past and why he said he's from a different Equestria, and Soren and Rainbow leaning against each other while enjoying the view. Although she trusted Shayden, Winter still wanted to ask Soren a few questions about the story to make sure it was legitimate. When she knew Shayden was telling the truth, she hugged him tightly, shed a few tears, and apologized that he had to go through all of that. Shayden of course hugged her back, then the two rejoined Soren and Rainbow for the remainder of the trip. > Chapter 5 > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- The moon lit most of the road leading into Manehattan as the two couples trudged towards the shining city. The walk wasn't terribly long, but it definitely took some time. Rainbow complained to Soren that he and Shayden didn't teleport them to the city, to which Soren explained that the walk was part of the fun. They were all relieved when they saw the instant switch from dirt roads to city streets. Winter Solstice explained to Rainbow Dash and Shayden that the purpose was to keep carriages within city limits, for their particular wheels don't run well on dirt. After he had explained his past to his marefriend, Shayden immediately inquired of Soren why taking the train to Manehattan wasn't an option. The alicorn answered that walking was less expensive and technically faster than taking the train. The train had to move back toward Canterlot so it can change directions and head to Manehattan. Assuming the vehicle doesn't stop, it should arrive in town sometime tomorrow. They beat it by several hours by taking a carriage then walking! As the four of them stepped onto the street leading into the city, they could already see tall buildings as far as their eyes could see. Shayden scanned the area with interest, Winter beamed, Soren mouthed a 'wow,' and Rainbow simply looked around. The bright lights, glowing signs, yellow and black street carriages, and ponies dressed in various types of clothing could impress any tourist. Unfortunately, their tourist trip through Manehattan would have to wait until tomorrow; they were all exhausted from the travel here. It took about half an hour to figure out where a hotel was in the massive city. Once inside, they managed to order one of the only two-bedroom apartments left in the building; most of them were already occupied. Bringing their bags to the fifth floor, the couples found their beds, which were in the same room this time, and simultaneously flopped onto it. ---------------- The morning came by quick. Before anyone knew it, the sun was shining through their window and into their eyes. They wanted to rest so badly that they had forgotten to close the blinds in their apartment. Rainbow groaned and stirred, waking Soren up as well. The two sat up, looked at each other, then snickered at each other's bed head. Soren then kissed Rainbow's cheek good morning and hopped off the bed. While Soren tried to fix his hair, Rainbow stretched and yawned. "I see you two are finally awake," Shayden greeted from the doorway. The three exchanged 'good mornings' before Shayden continued. "Winter and I are about to go for a morning walk. We'll also try to find any points of interest. I believe you two said you already had one in mind?" They nodded. "Have fun," Soren said. "I'm going to take a shower." He walked into the bathroom connected to the bedroom. The apartment wasn't too different from their previous one. Dining area and living space were together once more, the beds were in one room, there was a bathroom that could only be accessed from the bedroom, and there was a balcony that every apartment on this side of the building had. Rainbow remained in the bedroom as Shayden walked into the main room. After a minute, she heard the shower start and their apartment door close. Smirking, she trotted to the closed bathroom door and knocked on it. "Yes?" Soren called to whoever it was. "It's me~. They left~." "Then come on in." There were always ways around not being able to have fun while sharing a bedroom. ---------------- Winter and Shayden returned after an hour and half. They found a few interesting places. Another cinema, another taller music store with studios and a radio station, a multi-building mall, a theater, and a library big enough that it had it's own separate wing for unicorns to practice magic in. Rainbow didn't feel like watching another movie, Soren and Shayden were interested in the library's magic wing (Winter also wanted to see Soren's magic capabilities), and Winter wanted to see a play. After awhile of planning, the group decided to go to the library, the mall, then hopefully the theater today. After eating lunch in their apartment, the four left the hotel and walked down the busy streets, Winter and Shayden leading. Rainbow saw the library in the distance, Soren pointed out the mall down the street from it. They bumped into Shayden and Winter due to being distracted. They were about to ask what the big deal was when they noticed two Lunar Guards standing in their way. "Soren Melody," one said. "Yes? Can I help you?" he responded with an unsure stare. He stepped in between his friends and the guards. "Are you affiliated with the Nightmare Guardian?" Soren and Rainbow's eyes slightly widened at the use of Nyra's old name. "She was in Manehattan. We were investigating her but before we could get the information we needed, she attacked the soldier sent to watch her and fled the city." "And what exactly warranted an interrogation on her?" Soren asked. "What was she doing wrong?" "She has the ability to change into her Nightmare form at will. That is all we can tell you that isn't classified information. We must ask again. Are you affiliated with her, and do you know her whereabouts?" Soren remained silent. "If you fail to comply, we will assume—" "I'm thinking!" he shouted. Everyone was stunned by his loud outburst. Winter flinched back a step, and ponies across the street looked over to the group. Soren closed his eyes for a few seconds then looked at the guards. "You do know that she's dead, right? So what if a bat pony shows up in Manehattan? That doesn't mean you get to scare the moonlights out of her." "We didn't mention a bat pon—" "I saw her die!" he shouted again before speaking normally. "I know the mare that fled was a bat pony. You said you suspected the Nightmare Guardian was in Manehattan. That means you were following a bat pony, who probably had enough of your harassment and beat up a Guard then fled town. Good job. Hope you're proud of yourself." The guards looked nervous now. "You do know what I do to ponies who threaten the innocent, right? I don't care if you are Luna's guards. I fought within your ranks to prevent an assassination on the princess herself! Do me a favor and never harass another innocent pony again." "Err, right...sorry to bother you, Mr. Melody." The two guards turned then took to the sky. Once the two were out of sight, Soren sighed and hung his head, ears drooping. "Soren?" a mare called out. His right ear perked; it was Winter. "Are you alright? That was quite the outburst." "Sorry. Lunar Guards don't back down easily. I had to scare them off. When I heard that they stalked Nyra, I just..." He felt a hoof on his shoulder. Glancing over, he saw Rainbow smiling at him. He smiled back then faced everyone. "Sorry again. Let's just continue with our trip." ---------------- The rest of the day went on without any more problems. In the library, Shayden showed Soren how to manipulate smoke, but the alicorn didn't have enough time to use it as anything but a meditation technique. (Using magic to make smoke float around the air can be quite calming.) Soren also showed Winter one of his more powerful spells that took awhile to learn: the duplication spell. He create three versions of himself and made them do different things. A headache formed afterwards, however. The mall was extremely crowded, but everyone wasn't surprised. The stores were selling many interesting objects. Jewelry, exotic foods and plants, gemstones, and even small weapons! Soren was immediately interested by a set of wing blades that were in a glass case protected by two royal guards; he had to be dragged out of the store by Shayden. Winter found some nice clothing and made Rainbow try certain ones on, embarrassing the pegasus in the process. After the mall, they group managed to catch a showing at the theater. Winter was well familiar with the play. Shayden paid attention to the name, but Soren didn't hear it and Rainbow didn't care all that much. The play was about two griffon families that were rivals. A son from one family and a daughter from the other fell madly in love with each other but know they cannot be together. Regardless, they take every risk to be together, ultimately leading up to the death of female. Since the male couldn't live without his love, he took his life to be with her. Winter loved the play, Shayden enjoyed it, Soren couldn't complain, but Rainbow was bored the entire time. As they exited the theater, a low sun greeted them. Seeing as their first day was slowly coming to a close, Rainbow turned to Winter. "How about you and I go have some girl time? I'm sure we could find something to do together." "Oh behave~, Rainbow," Winter teased, causing Shayden's mouth to slightly hang open in shock. Soren laughed and shut his friend's mouth. "But yes, that's sounds fine. Anywhere in mind?" "A few places that Twilight helped me pick," the pegasus started as the two mares walked away from their stallions. "So what are we supposed to do?" Shayden asked Soren. "I know exactly what we can do for fun while the mares are spending time together." "I know this will probably be a bad idea, but what is it?" Soren grinned. > Chapter 6 > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Holy Sprites Bar. One of the more popular hangouts in Manehattan. Run by a griffon family know as the Zapbirds. The establishment was fairly large. A few dozen tables dotted the first floor yet still made room for a dance area, and more tables occupied the half floor above. From the entrance, a bar with three bartenders, who were busily making drinks for ponies, was on the left wall; a stage, which had ponies singing karaoke, was against the wall opposite the front doors; and there was a stairway leading to the balcony-like floor above. Soren looked up at the railing that encircled the one massive room from three sides, the stage's wall being barren. On both floors, he could see various groups of ponies (and griffons!) laughing and having a grand time. Mares and stallions danced together in the center, and the bartenders performed tricks while creating beverages. "Did you take me here to flirt with mares? I have a marefriend." Soren chuckled and looked at Shayden. "Why did you assume that? I'm taken as well. I'm just here to listen to the music." "You could simply make your own." "Sometimes you have to listen to others. Plus, the other reason is for you to have fun." Without waiting for a response, Soren teleported him and Shayden to the bar. "Bartender! When you get the time, three rounds for my friend and I!" Shayden's eyes widened, and the characters around the bar laughed whole-heartedly. They liked this pony's style! "What do you think you are doing?" Shayden hissed at Soren, who had the biggest grin on his face. "Having fun." Six mugs were levitated to Soren, who took them in his own magic then physically tossed enough bits towards the bartender. With Shayden in tow, he trotted towards an empty table near the entrance of the bar, set down the drinks, then took a seat. Shayden refused to sit down and chose to instead stand next to the alicorn and stare at him. "I'm not going to drink." "Pfff HA! Says you! Shayden, look at me. As your friend, I want you to try what this Equestria has to offer. I want you to have fun. Experiment. You're going to drink." Smiling, he held out a mug to Shayden, who considered the offer. The look on Soren's face showed that he wasn't trying to pull any pranks or take advantage of him. Winter shouldn't get too mad at him for one or two; he was going to 'open up' after all. "No more than two," he stated as he sat next to Soren, who placed the mug in front of him. "If it helps, I don't drink much either. Cheers!" He held up his mug to Shayden, who in turn tapped his mug against Soren's. "Cheers." Soren swore he saw a small smile. ----------------- Shayden was smart to say they shouldn't have more than two ciders; the pair couldn't even handle two very well. One hour later, Shayden was a tad drunk, laughing constantly but maintaining some of his typical personality. On the other hoof, Soren, who had a higher metabolism being an alicorn, could handle his alcohol better than Shayden but was drunk as well. Soren didn't feel too ashamed at getting drunk with two ciders; most ponies get drunk around three or four anyway. Unfortunately, he and Shayden were lightweights due to not being experienced with drinking. It didn't matter to him; Shayden was having a great time! As the pair cracked jokes and laughed at the smallest things, a male griffon walked up to their table. Soren noticed the friendly-looking bird-lion and smiled. "You know, in my entire quote unquote life here in Equestria, I have never met a griffon. How the hay are ya?!" The griffon was about to respond but felt a hoof petting the side of his neck. He and Soren glanced at Shayden, who was rubbing his prosthetic wooden hoof on the griffon. "Haha, ur feathers are so soft...and griffony," he slightly slurred. "Shayden...how do you ev'n feel using a wooden hoof?" "Shuddup!" The griffon actually chuckled. "You sure are drunk," he finally spoke. "He's a lightweight," Soren commented. "Don't mind him." "You seem just as drunk." "Nah, I juss like to mess around. I am drunk, just not as much as this stallion." "I'm not that drunk!" Shayden exclaimed. "You're so drunk that you would probably sneeze out cider!" "Anyway," the griffon continued, chuckling first, "what are you two doing here? You definitely don't blend in with the crowd." "I'm just spendin' time with mah buddy." "AMIGO!" Shayden shouted to the heavens, turning a few heads their direction. He draped a hoof over Soren's shoulders, dropping his entire weight onto him. Shayden may be a unicorn, but he was easily the size of an earth pony. "Oof! Ur heavy!" Soren strained. "You calling me fat?!" "I just said you're heavy! Wow, you are drunk." The griffon laughed. "You two are quite the pair. Where ya from?" From there, the three began a conversation (or as good of a conversation a griffon can have with two drunks) about who they are and where they're from. The griffon explained that he approached them because he was interested in the alicorn. Soren responded by saying a griffon stands out more than an alicorn, to which the griffon agreed with. After about half an hour, the griffon said goodbye to the pair and walked away from the table to his own friends, leaving Shayden and Soren alone again. "So," the swaying Shayden began. "Y'say you have a song for anything, correct?" "Pretty much." "I have heard some very explicit songs 'n my travels. I'll bet that you can't create one." "How much?" "Wha?" "How much will ya pay me if I make one?" "Fity bits." Soren knew he meant fifty. "Really? Haha, alright. Juss give me a bit. Probably need another cider too." He grabbed the last cider on the table. There would have been two had they not offered it to their griffon buddy. "You have ta sing it before we leave." "Deal." Soren and Shayden shook hooves, while Soren took a swig. "Waitress!" Shayden yelled. "Another round!" "I love how you can't hold your beer." "YOU can't hold ur beer!" "Better than you!" "Can't argue with that!" The two shared a laugh before Soren began pondering what song to sing. There were some that he believed were too explicit and others he felt weren't explicit enough. It took him awhile to pick one, and being drunk didn't help either. Finally deciding on one, Soren ran over to the empty stage (almost tripping twice) and hopped up there. He tapped the microphone, which caused a loud feedback throughout the building, turning heads to the stage. Soren was frozen at the immediate attention for a few seconds before clearing his throat to calm himself. He gasped upon seeing two guitars, one acoustic and one electric, leaning against one of the two speakers onstage. He levitated the acoustic guitar over to him and a stool from the bar. He began playing with magic as he sat upon the stool. Soren chose magic to play the guitar because he could control what was being played better than his drunk hooves could. Half of the bar quieted down as Soren began. This is a song for the ladies But fellas listen closely You don't always have to buck her hard In fact sometimes that's not right to do Sometimes you've got to make some love And freakin' give her some smoochies too Sometimes ya got to squeeze Sometimes you've got to say please Sometime you've got to say hey... I'm gonna buck you softly I'm gonna screw you gently I'm gonna hump you sweetly I'm gonna ball you discreetly And then you say hey I bought you flowers And then you say wait a minute Sunny I think I got somethin in my teeth Could you get it out for me? That's bucking teamwork! What's your favorite posish? That's cool with me It's not my favorite But I'll do it for you What's your favorite dish? I'm not gonna cook it But I'll order it from Zanzebra! And then I'm gonna love you completely And then I'll bucking buck you discreetly And then I'll bucking bone you completely But then I'm gonna buck you haaaaard Haaaaard The bar was now silent. Soren started to feel embarrassed but being drunk made him not care as much. He started to laugh when a few ponies and griffons cheered, applauded, and laughed. Soren cheered and laughed with them, energy coursing through him. As he stood on his hind legs with forelegs spread and a smile on his face, Soren almost fell a few times but managed to stay upright. Out of all the ponies cheering, Shayden could be heard clearly over everyone. As the dark unicorn cheered loudly for his friend while trying not to giggle, he felt a hoof tap his shoulder. Turning around and almost becoming dizzy, Shayden smiled and hugged his marefriend, Winter Solstice. "Hi, Winter!" he exclaimed loudly. "Whatchu doin' here?" "Wondering what you boys are doing," she replied. "I was having a good time with Rainbow. However, she accidentally hinted at her and Soren's little plan to loosen you up. I made her show me where he took you." "What's Soren doing?" Rainbow asked Shayden while interrupting Winter. "He's on stage." "Winning a bet," he answered enthusiastically. "He sang a hell of a explicit song!" Rainbow snickered at the drunk Shayden. "And you didn't invite me?!" she exclaimed jokingly but with slight disappointment. "Shayden," Winter continued, "when I told you to lighten up, I didn't think you would get drunk." "I only had two beers!" he defended. Soren hobbled over to them, swaying the entire distance. "He's telling the truth!" he shouted over-dramatically as he fell to Winter's hooves. "He's such a lightweight it's unbearable!" Soren hugged her legs, and Winter couldn't help but chuckle at him. "Look at you down on your knees," she teased. Soren grinned. "You girls could be down on your knees if you know what I mean." "Ah may be drunk, but I know a flirt when I hear one!" Shayden proclaimed. Soren shot up and grinned sheepishly. "Soren, you might want to step to the left," Winter warned. "More of ur astrology magic? Alrighty." He stepped to the left just in time to dodge a glass bottle. "Wow, ur good." "Actually, I saw him about to throw it." "Shuddup, you lot!" a pony at a nearby table shouted at them. "Imma trying to drink hee." Rainbow, Soren, and Shayden all fell over laughing. Winter laughed as well but remained standing. The two mares had to force Soren and Shayden to leave the bar. As they walked down the street towards their hotel, Soren and Shayden hung onto each other and began singing a drunk version of 'Sunday Morning.' Rainbow smirked while Winter rolled her eyes with a smile. What the two couples didn't know is that two ponies were watching them as they left. Two stallions in purple armor hid in the shadows of an alleyway. One Lunar Guard looked to the other and motioned his head at the four ponies. The second guard shook his head 'no.' The two then turned around and walked deeper into the alley. So much for following orders. > Chapter 7 > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Last night was fantastic for the stallions; the next morning was hell. The sun beat down rays of fire into the eyes of Soren and Shayden, the former hissing and the latter groaning. While the two stallions shifted in their respective beds, the mares decided to go out to eat breakfast and to let the boys recover. Around noon, Soren couldn't force himself to remain asleep, so he made his way into the kitchen for a glass of water. Strangely enough, by the time he finished drinking the glass, the headache was almost gone. Thirty minutes later, Shayden dragged himself out of the bedroom. He trudged into the kitchen, groaning the entire way. Soren smirked as the unicorn slowly poured a glass of water as well. "Somepony's a little hungover," he mocked. "How are you not?" the unicorn replied bitterly. "I'm a Time Lord. A lot of stuff heals quickly. Yay for me I guess." Shayden grumbled, downed his glass, then turned to the bedroom. "I'm going to lay down again." Soren chuckled. "GOOD NIGHT, SWEET PRINCE!" Soren shouted in his best Royal Canterlot Voice impression. Shayden fell over, cried out in pain, and held his head. Soren peeked through the doorway at the unicorn. "Too much?" "I'm going to kill you..." "Get in line. Chroma already has me on his metaphorical hit list." Shayden sighed heavily. ---------------- When Rainbow and Winter returned to the apartment, they found Soren, who was humming with his eyes closed, relaxing on a recliner chair while Shayden, who was laying on the couch, had buried himself underneath a blanket. "Hello, boys," Winter greeted. "How is the previous night fairing?" Soren simply pointed to Shayden. "He still hasn't recovered?" "I have," Shayden replied as he sat up, the blanket hanging over his shoulders. "The headache is still barely there, though. And this..." he pointed at Soren "...this pony...recovered extremely quick because of his Time Lord abilities." "Time...Lord?" Winter tilted her head in confusion. "Sounds like a rather bigoted title, don't you think?" Rainbow patted her shoulders. "Don't worry about it too much. We'll explain it some day. If you hang with us long enough, a lot of weird things will happen." "I'm not sure I want to be around if that's the case." "Rainbow, quit scaring the poor girl," Soren scolded from the couch. "You already hassle Shayden enough. Winter, she's over-exaggerating. Sure weird things can happen around us, but really it's nothing that bad. Makes things quite interesting. Just look at Shayden." "Buck. You," he retorted angrily. "Shayden. Language!" Winter gasped. "He got me drunk!" he exclaimed, pointing an accusing hoof at Soren, who just smiled. Rainbow sat on the ground beside the white pony while Winter sat beside Shayden and petted his foreleg lovingly. "Apologies for swearing, especially if I did so last night." "Oh, I liked it," Soren replied. "You remind me of when I sing certain songs." He jokingly sniffed as if beginning to cry. "I'm so proud of you!" "What song did you sing last night?" Rainbow inquired. "Shayden said you were winning a bet by singing—and I quote—'a hell of a explicit song.'" "Let me think..." Soren rubbed his head with both hooves in circular motions. "I think I got it. Are you sure you want me to sing it? Winter, do you want to hear it as well?" "From what I heard and saw from the audience, it had to have been somewhat entertaining or hilarious. Let's hear it." Soren proceeded to sing the song from last night to the mares. Midway through, he found it hard to keep a straight face; the lyrics and the girls' faces were almost making him burst into laughter. Rainbow Dash looked delighted and close to laughing as well, while Winter Solstice looked appalled yet still showing a small smile of disbelief. Once the song was over, Soren bowed. "Thank you, thank you, I'll be here all day." Rainbow fell over laughing every ounce of breath out of her. Winter just rubbed her ear and stared at Soren. "That was...what did I just...?" She groaned. "My head hurts." "Now you know how I feel," Shayden added. "That song is very funny, Soren." Winter looked surprised at Shayden. "You like it?" "In a manner of speaking. It's not offensive or anything. Just an explicit song to sing at adult parties or at a bar. Not a great song, but—" Shayden paused; he was looking at Soren and Rainbow Dash. Winter looked at the couple as well. Soren sat upright on the recliner while Rainbow was laying sideways on her back on his lap. Soren was brushing her mane when he noticed Shayden and Winter looking at them. The four ponies locked eyes. "What?" Soren and Rainbow said simultaneously. Soren continued. "Can't a colt show affection for his special somepony?" "Why are you two positioned that way?" Shayden inquired. "Why not?" "I find it adorable," Winter commented suddenly. "Oh! Idea!" She pointed at the couple. "Why don't you two tell me Soren's story? I've been dying to know why Soren is the way he is yet can maintain a authoritative demeanor. All I can research is rumors and bits of his adventures." "Are you sure?" Soren asked. "This could take all day. Isn't there something else in town you two would rather do?" Winter shook her head, and Shayden smiled then spoke. "With what happened last night, what could we do to top that? I have a hangover, for Faust's sake!" He chuckled, causing Soren to laugh as well. "If you two really want to hear everything..." Rainbow and Soren hopped off the chair. The three ponies sat around the couch, which Shayden was still laying upon due to how comfy it was, and faced each other. "Luckily, I had experience with telling someone my life story before. Her name was Robin; she'll show up in the story. Anyway, I should be able to give a great summary of everything. I could probably tell this to my kids at some point." "Soren," everyone said. "Right, rambling, sorry. It all started when I was found in Ponyville as a foal..." For the second time in his life, Soren had to explain everything that happened to him since arriving in Ponyville. Freezing Rainbow, dating Luna, saving Fluttershy from Soul Stealers, his first concert, discovering his family, finding the Doctor then traveling with him for a bit, the Battle of the Nyrs (it was still hard for him to explain everything), defeating Cain, fighting the Master and Queen Chrysalis, finding out who he truly was, almost killing the Master, fighting Chrysalis again, fighting Nightmare Moon, abandoning his friends, saving a filly from her undead mother, confronting the evil versions of Twilight and her friends, meeting Shayden, and finally defeating the Crystal Gang. During the story, the group went out to get food, all while Soren continued with the story without pause. It took several hours to explain every important detail of each adventure. As the story unfolded, Shayden and Soren bickered a bit, each time resulting in Winter settling the dispute. At first, Shayden wasn't convinced that everything Soren experienced was the truth. With some convincing from Rainbow and Winter, Shayden eventually had to believe the tale. He still couldn't understand how that much could happen to one pony. The sun was setting when Soren's life story was finished. The ponies stretched and laid around the apartment. Winter and Shayden were surprised that when Soren said it would take all day, he meant it. "You know, Winter," Rainbow began as she hopped onto the reclining chair, "you really balance them out." She referred to the stallions. Shayden saw Soren open his mouth. "Don't. Say. Anything," he warned, knowing a joke was arising. "Fine," Soren replied. He paused for a few seconds before blurting out, "One might say she's in the middle of us, if you know what I mean." "Oh my," Winter chuckled, blushing a little, while Shayden magically shut Soren's mouth. "Not. Another. Word." His magic weakened soon after, loosening Soren's jaw a bit. "But—" Shayden shut his mouth again but applied pressure this time. "Don't make me grind your teeth." "If you do," Soren barely managed to say, "how will you get out of this room unharmed?" "What do you mean?" Soren motioned his head towards Rainbow Dash. When her and Shayden made eye contact, she smirked then cracked her hooves. Shayden leaned back and released Soren's jaw. "Good point. How did you do that by the way?" Rainbow shrugged. "You just...crack your hooves. Like this..." She demonstrated again. "Stop it! That's honestly freaking me out." "Oh lighten up, Dawn," Winter said. "We're just having a good time." "Wait..." Rainbow began. "Dawn?" "That's his born name," Soren explained. "What? You never told me that, and you didn't say it in your story." "I didn't?" "I've been Shayden longer than Dawn," Shayden explained. He pointed to Winter. "Only she gets to call me that." He paused. "And my older brother. Can't stop him from calling me Dawn." "How is your brother doing anyway?" Soren asked. "Adjusting to life in this Equestria. Same as me. From everything you went through, I can see that even this place has dangers." "Everywhere does, bottom line. I was just lucky enough to deal with them before they killed me, or worse, my friends." "You shouldn't keep dwelling on your past," Winter interjected. "I know all of those things hurt. Losing Nyra, who is actually with you again; seeing your friends and innocents being hurt; witnessing deaths. But all of that is over. You have a better life to look forward to." "But does Nyra?" Winter locked eyes with Soren. Does this pony care so much about others that he truly doesn't worry about himself? she thought. Rainbow and Shayden decided to remain silent. Winter stood up and approached Soren. She looked at him as he stared back into what appeared to be a disappointed expression. He was wrong. Soren found himself being embraced by the mare. He didn't know what to do at first, but he soon hugged her back. "I'm sure Nyra is happy with you and your friends," she said softly. "Just like how happy I am that Shayden has such a caring friend who helped him through dark times." Soren patted her shoulder. "Don't worry about what he's been through." Winter brought her head back. How did he turn this around to comforting her? Soren smiled at her. "Winter, if there's one thing you should remember about me, it's that I would throw myself in front of a train to help those I care about." He wiped a tear away from her eye. He pointed to the stain on his hoof. "This...is enough proof that I can help you. One tear shows pain...and I'm the doctor that heals pain." Shayden and Rainbow embraced their respective lovers. Soren glanced out of the window and saw the moon rising. "One more stop tomorrow, everypony. Let's get some shuteye." He stood up and led Rainbow to the bedroom. Looking back at the other couple standing up, Soren commented one last thing. "Oh and Winter..." She looked at him. "I may be a fighter at times, but I'm more certainly a lover~." He winked at her before disappearing into the bedroom. Winter saw how distraught Shayden became. She wrapped her arms around him and kissed him passionately on the lips. "Don't worry. You're mine," she whispered vivaciously. > Chapter 8 > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- The trip was coming to a close; everyone could feel it. Sure, they had one more stop, but the only thing they would probably be doing is relaxing. They were going to see giant waterfalls on a semi-cloudy day. It was also bound to get cooler by the falls. Unfortunately, no one packed for chilly weather. This month was scheduled to have warm to cool days, not Winter temperatures. On the train, Soren was once again looking at the landscape passing by. He had done this a few times on this trip, but he found it relaxing. Equestria was such a peaceful country, much better than Shayden's version. If it wasn't for the fact that ponies looked up to somepony named Faust, Soren would have assumed that that Equestria is their dreaded future. That...and some familiar city names were already present. Soren looked at his friends gathered around each other on the floor of the train car. Rainbow and Winter were attempting to finally show Shayden how to play Prodder well. He was determined to be an average skill player by the end of the trip. Soren chuckled at his friend's slight irritation. Shayden's face didn't show it, his eyes did. Eventually, Winter excused herself from the group and trotted over to Soren. "You've been spending quite a lot of time talking to me," Soren commented with a grin as Winter sat next to him. "Shayden might get jealous if you keep this up." "I am loyal to my partner, as are you. We're just having a fun time. Plus, I showed him how much he means to me a few days ago." Soren remembered that next morning well. "Was that your first time sleeping together?" She shook her head. "I don't mean to pry, but...have you two done it often?" "A few times at most. Since you are asking of this sort of information, what about you and Rainbow?" "Same as you. Not many. Our first time together was actually with other mares. Heheh." Soren rubbed the back of his head, embarrassed. "And what caused that to happen? Isn't your first time supposed to be meaningful?" "It was. For both me and Rainbow. Tell you what, when we get back to Ponyville, go talk to Shayden's friend, Chroma. Tell him that I want him to explain 'that night' and what brought it on. It wasn't some lustful adventure. I actually didn't get a say in it. Haha. The mares bombarded randomly and things heated up from there." "Quite literally." "You have no idea. Anyway, enough talking about sex." Winter giggled. "Let's see how Shayden is doing." The two stood up then walked over to a disappointed Rainbow burying her face in her hooves. "Hey, Shayden. Want to play an actual game with all of us?" "I don't see the point," Rainbow replied. "He's understanding the game better, but he still can't do good." "Let me see for myself. Deal us in, Rainbow." The pegasus sighed then proceeded to toss cards to Soren, Winter, and Shayden. Rainbow wanted to sit out for now. Within the hour, the train would arrive at Neighagra Falls. The group spent that remaining time playing Prodder. Shayden came close to winning a few games, only due to him not remembering he could Fold. Winter wasn't much of a expert herself, but she still managed to win twice. When the conductor made the announcement that they were approaching Neighagra Falls, the group packed up the cards and gathered their belongings. The train came to a halt, and every passenger exited the train. Once the conductor was sure everypony had finished leaving or entering the train, it took off. Soren's group made their way to the Falls. It was a humongous and tremendous sight. The waterfalls were yards wide and many stories tall. The lake at the base of the falls roared and thundered from the impact of the water slamming into it with intense force. After getting as close as possible to the waterfalls, the group went to a viewing platform at a higher elevation. The noise was softer, which allowed them to comfortably relax and enjoy the sights. "Shayden," Soren started, "I've been meaning to ask you something." The dark unicorn looked at his friend. "Don't get mad, but when you aren't drunk, you're moody the entire time. Why? We're just trying to make you have a good time on the trip." "I'm just...I just want to be safe and secure at my home. With the dangers in my Equestria, exploring the world was begging for discomfort and the unknown." "Life is supposed to be full of mysteries that will drag you away from safety. Some are good, some are bad. It depends on your perspective." "Why do you want to seclude yourself in safety?" Winter asked her coltfriend. "Because...I've seen death and harm." He looked at Soren. "I've seen ponies break down because of death." Soren closed his eyes. "But I've also seen love, even if the two ponies barely know each other." Soren opened his eyes again. "Me and Nyra..." Soren realized as he smiled. Shayden nodded. "I'm sorry if I wasn't enthusiastic about this trip. I was merely nervous. I have to admit though...this was fun in the end." Winter hugged Shayden then kissed him. The two couples held each other in half-hugs as they all looked out at the waterfalls. Two hours later they would leave the tourist attraction and head to Ponyville with an uneventful train ride. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ----------------- Everfree Forest ----------------- "It was definitely a good time," Rainbow commented at the end of Soren's tale. Soren nodded. "Shayden had fun, Winter enjoyed meeting more of his friends, and I got to have a relaxing vacation for once." "Especially when you showered." Everyone laughed. Soren rolled his eyes but still smiled. He looked up at the dusk sky; the moon would be seen soon. "Looks like our camping trip is over. This was fun. We haven't had a chance to relax together in a bit. Too bad Rarity and Flutters couldn't make it." "We'll see them in Ponyville tomorrow," Twilight said. "For now, let's eat then get some sleep." Everypony nodded in agreement. ----------------- Soren didn't have much trouble falling asleep. He was annoyed at the fact that someone disturbed him and woke him up. He rolled to his side and cracked an eye open. Nyra was walking away from the campsite. He assumed she had accidentally woken him up. He decided to follow her to see if anything was wrong. She stopped at the nearby river and simply sat there, staring at the water flowing by. Soren soon sat next to her, slightly surprising her. "Couldn't sleep?" he asked before yawning. She shook her head. "Is anything wrong? You're not one who goes for a walk just because she couldn't sleep. Something else is bothering you." Silence. "Can you please tell me what?" He heard her whisper something. "Come again?" "...pony...life..." "Nyra." "You're the only pony I have in my life!" she finally said with frustration. It wasn't directed at Soren, though. "What?" "My dreams were toying with me. They showed me the truth that I wanted to forget. I'm just Nightmare Moon's magic that formed into a pony. I don't have a family. For some reason, I became a bat pony, but I don't know many of their traditions. I'm just a...a thing that...that turned into a pony." She hung her head. Soren tilted her head up with a hoof. He then smiled at her and wiped away a tear from her cheek. "You have a family, Nyra." Soren pulled her into a half-hug. "I'm here, and so are my friends. We don't hate you, we'd actually like it if you could stay here in Ponyville with us." She gave a small smile but still shed tears. "Thank you." "No matter what, I'll always be here to care for you whenever you need it." Nyra cuddled against Soren. "I love you." He froze. Should he say it back to not be rude? Then he though about how much she actually meant to him? Deciding it best to just comfort her for now, Soren responded. "I love you too. Ow! What was that for?!" When Soren repeated the words back to her, Nyra pounced on him and bit his neck. "That's one of the bat pony traditions I know of. When you care deeply for someone and the feeling is mutual, you give them a mark to show the bond you share. I won't forget who I bit, and you won't forget who bit you." "I guess it makes sense. That still kind of hurt." "Quit complaining," she laughed before standing up. "We should probably head back and get some sleep. We still have a ways to walk tomorrow." Soren nodded then followed her back to the campsite. He couldn't help but notice her hips were swaying. He silently smacked himself. Don't think about it, he thought to himself. ---------------- As he slept, Soren couldn't stop thinking about Nyra and Rainbow. He woke up blushing and slightly sweaty. He had to make up a dream to explain his condition to his friends. The walk back to Ponyville didn't help Soren's thoughts either. As with his dream, all he could think about were those two mares. When Rainbow noticed his strange behavior and asked him what was wrong, he told her that he would explain it when they were back home. Honoring his word, back in Ponyville and alone together, Soren told Rainbow about his talk with Nyra and about the dream he had afterwards. She didn't say anything until Soren wanted something from her. He asked if he could become closer to Nyra and care for her, while still dating Rainbow. She was irritated that he would even suggest that. However, when seeing how serious Soren was and with more pleading from him, Rainbow thought about the situation more. "Does Nyra mean that much to you?" she asked Soren. "I'm all she's got, Rainbow. I can't just shrug her off." "I can't say I'm completely for this idea, but...I am the Element of Loyalty. You want to stay with me while still caring for another pony that needs it. I trust you, Soren." "Thank you, Rain—" She raised a hoof. "The second I become jealous, though, you're going to have to stop." Soren agreed, thanked Rainbow again, then flew off to tell Nyra the news. One month later, the three ponies continued their two-way relationship. Throughout this time, however, Rainbow began to see how happy Nyra was with Soren and how glad he was to care for her. Rainbow started to have a mental battle with herself. One day, a decision was made, and she flew off to find Soren and to get him alone. "So what did you need me for?" Soren asked her. "I need to tell you something." Soren raised an eyebrow, not sure if this was a good or bad thing. "I was having doubts about this Nyra thing, but I realized something. She's a lot happier with you than I am." "What are you talking about?" "Soren, you share a deeper bond with her than with me. Both of us know that the only thing we do together anymore that couples do is what happened in the shower on our trip with Shayden. Other than that, we're pretty much just best friends. It hurts to say and it probably hurts to hear, but it's the truth and you know it." Soren sighed sadly, but Rainbow put a hoof on his shoulder. He looked at her. "I'm happy enough knowing that you have someone one to truly care for," she whispered while smiling at him. She kissed his cheek. "You belong with her, Soren. Not with me." "But—" She put a hoof to him mouth. "No. Go to her. I'll always be rocking out with you on stage. Soren, nothing is going to change for the worse when you think about. You love, Nyra; you still hurt talking about her death. You only talk her death and nopony else's. We're breaking up...so you can have a better mare for you." "Rainbow, I..." "I know you love me, but I know you'll love Nyra more. We'll always be best friends and the best rockers around. Do this for me." "Fine," he smiled. "I trust you." The two shared a hug. "Thank you, Rainbow Dash. Please don't hurt because of this." She felt his tears. "Are you kidding? You're the one crying." She sniffed and rubbed her eye.
