…It’s always me, do you get it too?

The royal guards watched as the lavender alicorn stood in the middle of a powering-up powerful teleport spell. As the spell became fully active, and Twilight vanished from sight, the nearest one could no longer hold in his rage and yelled after her. "Don't you dare come back, you monster!" The alicorn didn't hear him for she was too deep in her memories. How had this happened? Why? Twilight just didn't know.

The fact she tried to save her former mentor and was now blamed for the attack was beyond horrible. The thought brought tears to her eyes, but what happened afterwards created pain with no equal. Celestia believed that it wasn't Twilight but the pony judge said that Celestia was too traumatized by the "attack" that she wasn't thinking clearly.

The sun monarch promised Twilight that she would do everything within her power to uncover the truth and bring her back. The purple alicorn, unfortunately, was only able to leave a farewell note, pack her things and then was escorted out in public to be sent to a place of exile. Twilight did her best to prove that she was innocent but through the whole land they were printing newspapers that said "Pupil Attacks Teacher." They also printed other horrible things so it was really pointless but she tried anyway, even after seeing the horrified faces of the ponies around her.

Twilight’s thoughts were interrupted when she was suddenly dumped into a clearing surrounded by trees. To her front: unexplored land, to her back, the dark and grim Everfree Forest. She looked out into the untamed wilderness, and with one final look back at home she started onwards with only her bag and memories.

The first day there was pretty hard: she was attacked three times by strange monsters that she had never seen before. After the attacks she would draw pictures and write down what she learned about the things that inhabited, although she hadn't named them yet.

As she continued to look for a safe place to live, she suddenly heard yelling from further into the woods. Twilight extended her wings and flew at top speed to where the cries were coming from. It turned out there was a small group, probably a family, trying to get away from one of the new monsters she’d met. This one had the head of a lion, body of a cougar and dragon wings. It also seemed to have outmatched all the ponies present, except for Twilight. Twilight shot an energy blast at the monster, and it fled shrieking. The alicorn landed in front of the family, noting them all: the stallion, the mare and the little filly. All of them were staring at Twilight in amazement. The father stepped forward.

"Did you come from the castle? Are we allowed to go back?" the stallion spoke, sounding rather dispirited. He was an earth pony with a soft green mane and light brown coat: his cutie mark was a tree. The Princess of Friendship surmised he was a farmer. Twilight looked him up and down. From his words, he’d probably spent a very long time here, and she couldn't give him false hope.

"No, I am here for a crime I did not commit. I'm sorry." She was about to walk away when the mare spoke up.

"Tree Crystal here is my husband. His family, our family was banished after they planted some trees, strange apple trees back home that couldn't grow properly there. The trees nearly destroyed our home but we didn't mean that to happen." Twilight looked at her, noting her looks. She was a unicorn with a sky blue mane, light corn-coloured coat, and a crystal apple blossom cutie mark. Her eyes were pale blue.

“What about you?” The alicorn mare looked down at the little filly who was a unicorn like her mother. She had a brown coat like her father, and a soft red mane. The mother looked at her, and nodded: giving her daughter the reassurance to tell her story.

"I...I tried to steal the elements of harmony to save my home but when they arrested me…they didn't believe me about my home. It's all gone n...now." There were real tears in her eyes. Twilight could tell that that she was sorry.

"What are your names?" Twilight asked, looking at the mother and daughter. At first she was surprised but told her. "I'm Sky Flower, ‘Sky’ for short, and this is Crystal Apple. You’ve already met my husband, Tree Crystal.” There was a faint smile on her face. "We are, all three of us, trying to start over." That was something Twilight could relate to. “Well, I’m Twilight Sparkle. I was a Princess back in Equestria.” “Well, Twilight Sparkle, you’re welcome to stay with us for the time being, if you want to?” Tree Crystal said. Twilight smiled. “Thank you.”

1 week later

Twilight now had a small hut of her own, living near the family that she’d met when she’d arrived. Tree Crystal and Sky Flower had finally got their farm started, growing their apples from seeds they’d brought with them. No one else could grow these apples: they were truly special, unlike the ones that nearly destroyed their land. They looked as though they were made out of crystals and they were even more amazing then zap-apples. Only this particular family could grow them.

Other ponies that were banished lived there too. With Twilight protecting them from the forest and other dangers, they could seemingly live a normal life. After a month the place was roughly about the size of Ponyville, and they made Twilight their ruler, their Princess. Of course she tried to say no but everyone there pleaded oh so very much, and so she was able to take it with a smile.

Her rules went like this. Firstly, this land was theirs, and they couldn't let their anger and their past ruin it. Secondly, to live in the land: the ponies had to be open to change and let go of the anger that they felt in their past.

They named their new land ‘Rises’ because two things rise every day: the sun rises and sets, and then the moon comes out. So like that ever-changing pattern, everyone in this land got a clean slate and a second chance. If they broke the rules, then they were left to fend for themselves but they had to get through 100 acres of forest, just to see the clearing. Not to mention having to traverse the Everfree Forest. With that in mind, most of the ponies that got to Rises were already ready to change. Some couldn’t quite let go of their anger all at once, but over time, the bad memories faded into obscurity.

This was Twilight's new home and life, and she was going to protect these ponies and this land as the Princess of Friendship. The land was peaceful, Equestria did not know of this new land so no one tried to cause them problems. With their new princess, the ponies of this land could rise again but not in hate but love.

…Nothing stays the same for long

But who wants it to…

Sunlight danced on Twilight's eyelids, like it was trying to pull her from sleep, and she had to admit it worked. Slowly opening her eyes, she saw her stone bedroom window that was carved into the right wall. Getting to her feet, she looked around her room. From the inside, no one would have known that it was carved out of a mountain.

It had been 10 years to the day that she was banished from Equestria, and she didn't have any problems. Well, almost. Twilight still missed her dear friends and family, and of course her number one assistant and brother-son Spike. But she could not think of that today because it was a day of celebration. Today was the anniversary of the founding of this land! There was a surprising amount of ponies banished over the years from Equestria as she was. Twilight went to the balcony that her subjects made for her, and looked out.

The village was now twice the size of Ponyville, the crystal apple farm was flourishing, and ponies routinely went around with smiles on their faces. The farm was next door to her newly-constructed "castle", which was actually a carved out mountain that the ponies did for her without her knowledge. The homes were mostly single-story wooden huts but no pony cared because they made each home unique and special for them. There was a small hut across from Crystal Fields: it had attempted to be painted blue with blueberries, and it half worked; the original brown had blended into the deep blue streaks of the blueberry dye. The windows and roof had been decorated with flowers of many colours. In this hut lived Twilight's student: Ocean Star. Twilight met this young unicorn when she went and explored the forest. She thought back …

******

After Rises was created, the forest just seemed so much more alive like darkness was being lifted from it. Rays of golden light broke through the trees and refracted, making a glow that reminded Twilight of sunlight shining on a book. The rocks seemed to glow like crystals, and every color was so vibrant. The forest itself had few flowers but those that grew glowed like the moon.

Twilight was just looking for food because the crystal apple trees hadn't quite grown up yet. She was looking up at the treetops, thinking of flying up there just to see Equestria again when she heard a loud roar of a hydra in the distance. It sounded as though it had just found its lunch. Bursting into a gallop, she ran to see if somepony needed her help: blasting her way through the tree line. She eventually came upon a lake. The water sparkled clear blue, a small cliff could be seen across the clearing and the grass was different shades of green, waving gently in the wind. She was surprised that she never seen it before, being so close to her new home.

Hearing a bloodcurdling roar, Twilight saw the hydra standing atop the cliff. Apparently the hydras out here were nothing like the ones from back home in Equestria. Tree Crystal, Sky Flower and Crystal Apple had told her all about them. These ones had black armour-like scales, poisonous green fangs and blade-like claws. This one was young because it only had one head: the rest wouldn’t grow until much later into its life. From what Twilight could tell, it looked mad! That must mean its prey got away, but what happened to the cliff was not a good sign. It was cracked and slightly crumbled from the monster’s attack. Focusing her magic, she shot a beam of purple light at the hydra, making it roar. It shook its head, roared a second time and then stormed away into the forest.

Extending her wings, Twilight flew down to the base of the cliff and found two unicorns covering something. Squished between the two adults was a little filly. She had a deep blue coat and a sea green mane. As the alicorn watched, the filly’s eyes opened and looked at Twilight: beautiful aqua eyes. As for the parents it was already too late so Twilight laid them to rest at the base of the cliff. She brought the filly back with her to the little village. She named the little one ‘Ocean Star’.

******

Twilight smiled at the memory. She had had a lot of fond memories already: like during the time of Hearth's Warming on Twilight’s first year of Rises. She’d wanted to celebrate it of course, but it was the holiday for Equestria so not many ponies here would have wanted to join in on the "fun". This night was the longest night of the year, and in the wild that was a very bad thing because on this night the worst monsters of all, the ones that sleep the rest of the year away awoke hungry. It turned out that their favourite food was ponies, and on this night they suddenly attacked!

Twilight fought long and hard to keep them back but they just kept coming; wave after wave of monsters. Twilight thought that she and her little band of ponies were finished but she fought on with all her might! But when she cast a light spell to see where some of the bigger enemies were, as soon as the spell was active, they all ran back to the darkness. Thinking quickly, Twilight gathered everyone under the biggest tree and cast her most powerful light charm ever. It needed to be put on an object, so she cast it upon the tree. The ponies around Twilight watched in awe. It looked as if the stars had been pulled out of the sky and placed on the tree: shining with the brightest light ever over the small area that everypony was in; protecting them from the monsters.

The light was a blessing but they were unable to sleep because it was sooo bright! So to pass the night, they crafted gifts. It started with a few as a thank-you to Princess Twilight, and then everyone, even Twilight, made things and exchanged them. When the sun rose the next day, all the monsters retreated back into the shadows where they’d come from. All the ponies celebrated with food and games. It was the biggest breakfast any of them ever had.

Every year the monsters would try to attack their little country, but on the day before everyone always prepared for it by decorating the trees on the edge of their land with light crystals and light charms. They also made gifts for other ponies, then as the sun set: their princess would light up the large tree that they hid under on their first year, right in the middle of their land. In the morning afterwards, they would celebrate their survival with food and games. The ponies decided to call this night: "The Night of Starlight."

******

Twilight walked back into her room and started to get ready for the great day to come. She sat in front of her mirror: still surprised at how many talents ponies had could be used in a small place like this, and looked at herself. Over the last few years, her appearance had changed greatly. She was now as tall as Luna and had a similar build, her hair was still the same colour but it now contained sparkles that were like shining stars in the cosmos. Her hair’s coloured streaks rippled a little too. Resting upon the wooden desk was a light shawl, with a pin attached to it. The shawl was woven to such a fine degree that when the light hit it: the fabric would glow like a rainbow. She was told by her adoring little ponies that when she flies with it on she looks like a goddess with an aura of pure light and colour. The pin was in the shape of her cutie mark: which the ponies of Rises have come to know as "The Star of Unite". It became the royal symbol, and was placed on their country’s flag, which they hung in the centre of the town.

At first, Twilight was unsure of herself being in the position of royalty, leading a land, and every time they did something like this she felt even more so. Well that was until they made her a crown. The crown presently rested on a small shelf right above the shawl. It was in the shape of a vertically-placed ring, and from a distance you would think it was a flower crown but the flowers themselves were made up of different gems of different colours. The vines that connected the flowers together were made from gold and silver, with ribbons the colour of deep blue, light purple and pink that went to her shoulders.

Twilight was amazed that they were willing to risk dying to make this for her as a gift for the first year of protection. Thankfully no one died, and Twilight soon became as sure of herself as the ponies around her. She pulled the shawl over her shoulders and secured the pin to keep it from falling off. The fabric was light and airy, and even when the light wasn't touching it, it seemed to glow. She levitated the crown onto her head and then she was ready. Looking out the window, she said "Let's see what today brings!" and flew out to her subjects

There will always be pain...
...but hope is just as eternal

Twilight flew gracefully through the sky, the light shining on her shawl. The ponies below waved to her and smiled at their beloved ruler. Seeing the joy on their faces lifted her heart even higher, knowing that she was the one who started all this. Twilight landed gently on the dirt path that led through the town and looked around with a smile.

"Princess Twilight!" Several excited yells rang out as a group of young fillies and colts of every shape, size, and colour ran up to her.

"Hello little ones, what's got you so excited?" Twilight said with a playful smile. A little colt with a maroon coat and dark blue mane spoke up. His eyes were green and he didn't have his cutie mark yet.

"Um... we would like... if you want to... Can you help us with the flower garden?"

"Of course, I'd love to help. All you had to do was ask."

All the children cheered as they lead Twilight to an untouched patch of dirt that was reserved for this year’s garden. The adults watched as the little ponies galloped, skipped, and bounced through the town. Some of the adults wanted to help with the planting but they mostly just supervised to ensure that no one got hurt in the process, and left it for the colts and fillies to do.
For the annual planting, the towns ponies would have a competition to see who could come up with the best idea on how to plant the flowers chosen. This year’s idea was rather simple: plant young wildflowers and let them grow … easy yes, but the different colours and type of those flowers made it simply … stunning. The group dug until all the little sprouting flowers had been planted.

**************************

By the time they were done, the fair was all set up and the booths open: streamers and small flags the colour of Twilight’s coat and mane hung throughout the town. Everyone agreed that today was a joyous day, where they celebrated the day that all of them got hope once again: the day their Princess came to them. Before Twilight came, they all thought that they were going to die out here; but she gave them not only hope, but a home again.

But for Twilight herself, today was both one of great joy, and one of anguish. This was the day she knew that she could truly make a difference in the lives of those who needed her. It was also the day that she lost everything in her old life: her family, her friends, everything… Lost in thought for a moment, Twilight stood still, and then shook her head. Right now was not the time to show it, she could mourn her old life that night but now was to celebrate her new one.

Everything was in full swing: dancing, laughing, singing, all the ponies here were smiling. Whenever Princess Twilight walked by, ponies nodded politely but today she was just like everypony else: playing games, enjoying the food, or just goofing off. This was the one time that Twilight could unwind without worrying about anything troubling. Then, whatever force out there that loved ruining her life, suddenly decided it was play time.

Suddenly, out of the forest came a group of five ponies. They looked a little dirty, and more than a little hurt. Even though they looked like they’d just been through an apple crusher, determination burned in their eyes. The group was made up of two Pegasi, two earth ponies, and a unicorn, all of whom were very familiar to Twilight Sparkle.

Trust and forgiveness go hand in hand...
You must trust to forgive and forgive to trust

Twilight couldn't help staring, there standing in front of her were her best friends! Rarity: a beautiful white mare with a deep purple mane that had an elegant curl travelling to the end of it. Her cutie mark was three jewels: whose colour matched the same crystal blue of her eyes. Now her coat was stained with mud and dirt, leaves and sticks tangled in her mane, and her eyes were filled with fear. Rainbow was covered in small cuts from head to toe; along with Applejack, who also had a black eye. A dirty pegasus with a powder-pink mane called Fluttershy hid behind Rainbow. The only one who wasn't hurt was the one and only Pinkie Pie: she looked a little disheartened but okay in all. The shock that had overtaken Twilight promptly vanished when an echoing roar cut through the silence.

Now it was normal for ponies to come into the country like this, and ponies being chased did happen; but for those who stood wide eyed before her it was another story entirely. It turned out that Twilight didn't have time for this, a Chimera happened to be on its way.
A Chimera is a beast that has attributes of multiple animals but is not normally found in nature. The ones in existence were either products of crazy scientists or clawed their way out of Tartarus. This Chimera was one of the latter: you could easily tell from the eyes. Scientific Chimeras had relatively normal eyes, but the others had eyes the colour of fresh blood; set on a black so dark that it absorbed the all light around them. Because of this, the latter Chimeras were called 'Blood Eyes' and they were a hundred times more terrifying then the 'tub' Chimeras (the crazy scientists’ experiments), but they were not the worst things in the forest.

It roared, showing dripping jaws and hellish rage on its faces. Twilight attacked quickly and efficiently, taking the Blood Eyes down with one of her most powerful attack beams. The Chimera shrieked and collapsed. Its dead body then dissolved into flames. Luckily for the ponies, it had been caught off guard by Twilight’s sudden attack and no more damage had been done. That was that.

Taking a deep breath, she turned back to face her friends. A sudden thought popped into her head. ‘Are they still my friends? Why are they even here?’ Questions exploded into her head as she looked at the ponies before her. Before she could get a chance to speak, however, the injured rainbow-maned pegasus stared at her. "Twilight?" She sounded hopeful.

Twilight smiled. "It's me, Dashie." Their faces all lit up with beaming smiles. Pinkie’s was so far the biggest as she started to bounce around with pure joy.

"Wait Twi, what are you doing here?" Rainbow Dash suddenly blurted out.

"I'll tell you everything soon but first, is there anyone else that was with you or that you met on the way?"

Rarity then started to panic. "Oh no! We left Sweetie Belle in the cave, didn’t we?" Applejack also looked worried.

"If there are anymore of those thin's out there, they can't protect thems'lves! Oh no, Applebloom!"

"Scoots!" Rainbow was just about to take off when she started to moan in pain. Fluttershy immediately went to her side.

"Rainbow, your wings are still broken: you need to let them rest. Besides, Spike is with them. They’ll be safe for now."

Twilight shook her head. Frustration at the perceived danger, determination to solve this dilemma, and worry for her friends’ injuries were all building up inside her. It wasn’t good. “It's alright. Dr. Health, can you please take them to the clinic and give them a look-over." Before the five injured ponies could say anything, Twilight continued: "I'll look for the others." A white stallion, whose mane and tail matched his coat colour, stepped forward. He had yellow eyes and his cutie mark was a stethoscope.

"Whoa there! Why should we go with him? And … where are we?" Applejack spoke up. Twilight flushed, feeling a little sheepish not to have mentioned it before.

"Well..." the purple alicorn began, but was interrupted by Pinkie Pie.

"We're in your own country which you called Rises because of two things: the sun rises every day, and this place is the place where you can rise again and live a new life! You have your own holidays and today is your founding day where you saved your first ponies and it only got better from there! You were sooooo scared at first but now you’re all YAY!!! And you now protect everyone but you still miss your friends. But you don't have to worry about that anymore! 'Gasp'" she said, somehow in one breath. A bystander spoke up.

"How did you know that?"

"Just a hunch!" she said with a huge smile. Pinkie was grinning at the pony who’d just spoken, face-to-face: hanging upside down in mid-air with no tree or anything to hang from. Everyone was beyond confused at that. In the silence afterwards, they heard Princess Twilight muttering: "It's Pinkie Pie, don't question it. It's Pinkie Pie, don't question it." So they listened to her advice, and let it be.

"Anyway, it's as Pinkie said: this is Rises but right now we don't have time for all the details. The forest is filled with dangerous creatures, and the sooner I start looking for Spike and your little sisters, the sooner I find them and more likely in one piece." Being blunt to her friends was hard but it had to be done. "You need to be looked after just in case you bumped into any of the aforementioned creatures on your way here, and their claws or fangs were poisonous, or if your wounds are infected, or anything else. We will talk when I get back, and we can all discuss what I’ve been doing and what brought you here." The five newcomers then knew that any more questions to their best friend would be
unanswered. The less time that was wasted, the more likely they will see their sisters and dragon friend.

Dr. Health was leading his new patients off when a blue unicorn filly ran to Twilight. It was Ocean Star, showing off her new cutie mark: a star with crashing waves behind it to show that she was skilled in magic but was strongest in water magic. Following close behind, was her best friend Crystal Apple, with her new cutie mark too: a cut-in-half crystal apple. Her short red mane had grown slightly longer and was now tied in a ponytail.

"We're coming with you!" Ocean Star said, sliding to a halt in front of her mentor. Ever since she’d come to terms with what happened to her parents, she’d always wanted to help look for straggling ponies.

"We want to help these ponies!" Crystal agreed; she too wanted to help others as Princess Twilight had helped her family.
The purple princess smiled but shook her head firmly. "No, I'm sorry but you’re too young to go out there." Ocean suddenly developed a tic under her left eye which twitched in an irritated fashion. That was what usually happened when the blue filly got mad. Her magic was aggravated too apparently, a faint aqua aura sparking around her horn. Twilight quickly thought up an idea. "How about when you come of age, we all can go looking for stranded ponies. That way, you can invite some of the other young ponies, potential friends, to go with you." Crystal Apple smiled at the idea. Ocean Star pouted a little but agreed in the end. In Rises, the coming of age for young ponies was 16. Crystal Apple was 11 and Ocean Star was 12 so they still had 4 and 5 years to wait but they were okay with that.

With all the loose ends tied up, Twilight went searching for her old students and her little brother/son that she thought that she would never see again.

Students and teacher.

Finding the path that her friends took was repetitively easy just look for damage a red eyes could do and fallow, those things can cause quite a bit of damage when enraged. And this was a lot of damage.

When fallowing the path Twilight found a cave that was mostly hidden by shrubbery where she could hear faint crys, and soft shushing. Going in she found that it a rather shallow cave with four figures huddaling in the back, three ponies and a young dragon, all of whom she knew well.

The young ponies all had similar cutie marks of a tri coloured shield with aether a wing, apple, or music note. The first was a yellow earth pony with red hair and a bow, the second was a white unicorn with powder pink and purple hair, the last was a orange paguses with dark purple hair. Then the dragon was purple with green spikes. They all grew so much seance he last saw them.

Memories of teaching the young ponies and raising the drake from an egg flashed before her eye's. When they first saw her they recoiled back.

"Applebloom, Sweetybell, Scootalo, Spike. It's okay I'm here to bring you some where safe."

Spike was the first to register who she was.

"Twilight?"

"Yes Spike it's me, I missed you so much." He ran up and gave her a tearie hug, he was now as tall as her, Twilight noted. Soon the cutie mark crusaders jaoined in with a cry of "TWILIGHT!". After a muinute Twilight reluctantly broke the hug. "It's not safe here fallow me and I'll explained everything there." They gave a nod and fallowed out of the cave back to her home.
