> Love Sick > by Mr. Self Destruct > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- > Chapter 1 > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Within the dimmed music hall in Canterlot stood many ponies who waited in excitement at the foot of a small stage full of speakers and turntables that sat idle and ready to be played. The entire room dressed up beautifully to set a mellow and warm mood that would match the music soon to be played. Currently, it was all excited chatter from ponies whose voices overlapped one another from the anticipation that filled everypony within the room. However, no pony was more excited than one Vinyl Scratch, who pushed her way through the crowds with a smile plastered to her face until she reached the closest she could possibly be to the center of the stage. She wouldn't miss this event for the world, as she never once missed an event by this one pony she held so close to her heart. She wanted to be just like him, the stallion who created the music she was ultimately influenced by to create music of her own. It wasn't long before every single pony in the room started to cheer, starting from the front and getting louder as it reached the back. However, the excitement that was the loudest was that of Vinyl Scratch as the stallion took the stage and approached the turntables with a smile as his eyes panned the entire crowd that screamed for him. He was none other than DJ Soul, the stallion who was known all over Equestria for his nostalgic, smooth, soulful instrumentals that would convey such perfect emotions that some wish the music would never stop. He wasn't just a musician but an artist who showed just how pure music could really be. The stallion had a short, well kept mane along with tinted purple glasses and black with purple trimmed headphones. He held a smile, one of embarrassment. He was never used to being famous as he couldn't see himself as someone famous. He was like everypony else; just your average pony that had a passion for what he did. A love for music, which was obvious by the two musical notes that embraced his flank. It was time for the room to go from being full of chaotic cheers to the sound of soul. DJ Soul grabbed an album and placed it before he dropped the needle carefully in place and started to mix. The crowd kept cheering, but that slowly turned into each pony moving and dancing to the beat. Everyone started to become lost in the music; the bass against their chest, the sound just reaching the very bottom of their hearts, all with eyes closed. The change in reaction was phenomenal just by the way the crowd could be instantly controlled by the way DJ Soul would mix. The crowd didn’t tire from the music as he continued for another hour or so, breaking in between songs as they ended for only a moment to change the album. Within the pause of music, the crowd would always break out in applause before the song would start and the crowd would become entranced to the music once more. He was finishing up his tour of shows around Equestria and this was the reaction to be expected at any show. DJ Soul had mastered the art he had loved all his life. Nevertheless, It wasn't easy to reach that stage in his career. Despite thinking of himself as everyone else, the fame was now huge and it all started when he started experimenting with turntables from home as a colt. Originally, he lived in a small home out of Ponyville. His parents were both very supportive in anything he wanted to try. Though, he used to always just hang out with a group of friends that he was very close to. They used to go down the riverbank and just hang out and talk about how life was. One day, through discussion of the normal mundane day to day, there was an idea that sparked; the group of them should start a band. Soul had never given music a shot, though he wasn't one to say no to such an endeavor. He quickly pondered on what instrument he would play, and while everyone else picked traditional choices like drums or guitar, Soul wanted to go above and beyond and try something different. He just needed the tools to think of what he wanted to do. It was that night that he decided to go home and tell his parents what he and his friends planned. Since his friends already acquired instruments, he decided to give them a shot. At first, the guitar he thought may have been a perfect choice. He would hang out with his friend and try to learn to play it but the coordination was too much and the grip was very awkward to him. He simply couldn't adjust to it. Maybe he should try his friends drums he figured and gave that a shot as well. As his friend showed him how, he tried and had some of the same issues. He couldn't make a beat consistently with all the moving parts involved and felt as though it just wasn't his thing. He knew that he just wasn't really much for singing, and he didn't want to go the orchestral route with pianos or anything like that. He knew what he wanted it to all sound like yet he couldn't perform it on the instruments his friends were seeming to take better to. He went home and explained to his parents the problem. It was simple enough; he knew what he wanted it all to sound like, but he couldn't get the individual parts down first. It wasn't long before his dad suggested trying to take all the individual parts of what was already existing, even creating some of your own beats and sounds, and mixing his own music. Soul's father explained it in the sense of like taking the samples of parts of music as ingredients and putting them together to make his own original sound. His parents soon bought him his own turntables and other music equipment. As time went by, he started to create beats and small loops of music on his own before introducing his friends to what he was doing. They loved it and supported his idea as well, but they had started to lose interest in the idea of a band. Despite his friends eventually giving up on the idea, Soul kept at what he was doing. He didn't give up, he only wanted to get better. He would stay up long nights, and even whole weekends, locked away in his room which had now became his personal studio creating his own full length songs before it came to him that maybe he should try to make demos and get the opinion of the locals. After he had composed a handful of songs that he liked, he put them on a handful of CDs that he could hand out for the locals. He took out the time in a day to go down to the market and hand out the CDs for free. He didn't make many copies so he ran out quick, however he was surprised to find that there was a small demand for his music. He had received many compliments and accolades from the community who had the chance to listen to his music. He had composed a few more original CDs with a few more songs on them and continued to hand them out at the local market, only with a larger quantity so that more people could enjoy his work. Finally, his parents had given him a great idea. They told him that he should go to the town square and do a small live show for everyone, playing some of his original music and even creating some original tracks to show off. He was nervous to do so, yet excited as it was a wonderful idea. His parents helped him hand out fliers and even got him setup with a small stage with his equipment out and all. He didn't think he would attract much attention but instead, all of his friends, his family, and many of the local community that praised his music to begin with had showed up to not only support, but partake in the entertainment. After doing just a small show, it was the day he no longer found himself a blank flank anymore and finally found his talent. He worked so hard and was from that day on given the prefix that made him forever the person he is now known as by all, DJ Soul. At the end of the show in Canterlot, he finally ended with a slow track that would bring the crowd down from it’s euphoric high of sound. As the crowd gave their approval through the applause once more, DJ Soul gave a bow in gratitude to those who took the time out to see him. The lights came up to bring the room back to normality as DJ Soul exited the stage there ending the performance. Instead of getting out of there and instantly moving on to his next location, there was something that he always liked to do which was stand by the show's exit. He would thank people as they leave, say hello, sign items if people asked, even took pictures. He pretty much found a chance to hang out with everyone so he could show that he really felt, and was, another normal pony. Most people didn’t linger for long as they did have to leave, but it wasn’t much a problem for him as he just liked to meet the people who were into the music that he strived to make perfect. This was the night that stood out though, as he met one fan specifically that would stick with him more-so than any other. A mare with a white coat and double shaded blue mane came up to him and gave him a greeting. “Hi! I loved your show! I've been to each one on this tour of your shows and they have all been perfect!” Vinyl Scratch said with elation, holding her hoof out to tap it with DJ Soul. His attention turned to her, a big smile in appreciation of the compliment and returned her outstretched hoof. “Why thank you so much! I'm glad you liked the show. I’m even more appreciative that you managed to come to each show! That's quite a lot of traveling you must have done.” He chuckled then continued. “It’s very nice to meet you though. Are you coming to my final show? It will be an outdoor show, and this one will mean a lot to me as it’s sort of like going back to my roots.” Vinyl Scratch nodded. “Of course I’m going, I’m really excited. And I heard about that, it’s where you played your very first show. I wish I could have been there.” “Haha, well. You will get to see it this time around. After that, it’s back to the studio to make something new. I am a bit beat from all the traveling myself. It’s one heck of a pay off though since I get to see so many people who enjoy my music. Even I’m still surprised that it has become this big. I mean, it was really just a hobby at first.” “Well, to be honest, you’re like my idol. You’re not only my inspiration but the reason I’m into making and mixing music like I am today. I do my own stuff from home but I’m no where near as good as you are! It has always been a dream to meet you and I finally got the chance! I have seen you before outside the venues but I had to leave too quickly to get the chance to stop by. I can’t even stop smiling! Actually… Would it be okay for me to show you my music and get some pointers?” “Of course it would be, but obviously we can’t here. I’ll tell you what. How about you swing by my studio in Ponyville after the show tomorrow? We can hang out and I can help you with whatever you need!” Vinyl Scratch let out a fan girl squeal before nodding instead of saying anything. At this point, she was shaking with exhilaration. DJ Soul laughed. “Alright well, It’s time for me to retire and head back home so I can put on my final show. Hope to see you there!” He said as he walked through the crowd of people, occasionally getting a shout out or whistle so fans would notice him as he passed them by. Vinyl Scratch was more excited about hanging with him then she was about the show. She was quick to rush home and sleep to get up tomorrow, though she knew with so much to look forward, she would probably find it extremely difficult to sleep. The next day, DJ Soul woke up and headed out to the town square to make sure that his stage was being set up correctly. He had personally asked that some of the ponies come out and sell their goods like some cakes from Sugar Cube Corner and some apple products from the local farm. As he went out to the square, he went around to speak to some of the coordinators of the booths selling goods and merchandise along with the event staff who were putting up his equipment on stage. Everything was running smoothly and the event was just hours away and DJ Soul was extremely excited to do this show since it was at home, where everything started for him. As he stood outside, he caught Vinyl Scratch coming his way. He turned his attention and approached her as well. “Well, I see you got here early.” He laughed a bit, happy to see that she showed up. “I said I would, didn’t I?” She stuck her tongue at him playfully then continued. “I just wanted to make sure I wasn’t late. Guess I made it just in time.” DJ Soul smiled and shook his head. “Well listen, since it’s not starting for a while and you are already out here, want to grab something to eat at a local place I usually go?” She blushed lightly. This was like a dream. It’s like her idol is just her best friend. “Oh, I mean… I don’t want to impose or anything…” “Hey, no, don’t worry about it. I’ll pick it up. Just something small like a sandwich or something. C’mon!” He quickly moved along down the road with Vinyl Scratch quick to follow. They showed up at small outdoor diner where they took their seat and were quickly met with a waiter. The waiter had obviously recognized Soul and was quick to be by. “Well welcome back! What’ll be for you and your friend here?” The waiter said. “Just get us a couple of hay sandwiches please?” DJ Soul responded. “Sounds good, I’ll get them out to you in a hurry!” DJ Soul smiled the waiter as the pony left and turned back to Vinyl Scratch. He saw on her face that she was still excited, I mean she was hanging out with her favorite pony in music! How could she not be? He was flattered but didn’t want her to seem so stressed by trying to impress, in spite of the fact that it was practically a lifelong dream come true. “So, are you excited for the show like I am?” “Heck yeah! I mean, I’m happy and sad. The tour will be over but I will get tips from THE DJ Soul. I mean, that’s way cooler than anything I ever expected. I mean really, being taught by the one who inspired you in the first place? That almost never happens to anypony and here I am with the chance!” “Haha, well. I’m glad. Don’t think of me so highly though. One day, you’ll be better than I am. That’s just the way it is in life. I can’t wait to hear your work as well. As far as the show, I just want to put on the best performance possible. It’s what the fans deserve!” He smiled to her and paused his conversation as their food arrived. He nodded and gave a thank you to the waiter before going back to Vinyl Scratch, taking a bite each time he could. She followed suit and started to eat as well. She ate a bit quicker than DJ Soul, as she was anxious and rushing like somehow she would miss the show. DJ Soul continued. “None the less, I do have a new song I want to throw out there tonight. I plan to make a standalone album that is five parts. I only have one fully recorded, but that’ll change when I get in the studio. I’d like to give you some tips while I work on parts two and three. They are nameless tracks right now but hopefully, you can help me with that. Maybe you‘d be the one giving me tips on this album instead. I‘d enjoy that, to have your help on it. Didn‘t think about it, but I think it would be cool to do a collaboration or something together. ” Vinyl Scratch giggled before she could reply. “That’s… An honor! I’d love to!” “Well then it’s settled! But for now, let’s go. Time I get on stage and put on one heck of a show! You’ll love the new stuff, for sure. C’mon!” > Chapter 2 > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- It was time for DJ Soul to take the stage once more. As he passed the crowd, Vinyl Scratch nudged him and smiled. She had to raise her voice to speak over the large crowd that assembled around the stage. “Good luck!” She said, barely audible over the idle chatter and occasional whooping of the crowd. She pushed her way to the front of the makeshift stage so she could be front and center once more. This show was much more “informal” unlike most of his shows in the bigger cities. Usually, they would have to have gates to keep the crowd in an “approved” area and to keep them somewhat distanced from the stage. There was none of that this time. Usually, they were indoors with the room done up to match the atmosphere for the music and that didn’t exist either. Just some banners with vendors and their stalls surrounding the area. Despite all that, the crowd was just as large as a normal turnout would be for DJ Soul and he was extremely thankful as always. He had all of his equipment ready but instead of normally starting off with music, he decided to give a small speech for the folks of the town that he loved, not only as his fans but as neighbors, friends, and family. He pulled the microphone up and began. “How is everyone tonight?” Elation and cheering began for a moment before he continued. “Alright, alright… I want to thank everypony who took the time out to come and enjoy the music that I put my all effort into. I’m just grateful beyond all words that you all enjoy it. I do it for you all, and I enjoy every second of it… I want to play a new song for you tonight to start it all off. You ponies will get to hear it first and it’ll keep you all looking forward to what I plan to put out next. Again, thank you and I love you all.” As the crowd began to cheer, even with some fans yelling “We love you too!” or “Thank you!”, DJ Soul started a beat. Something different. Something much more heartfelt. He added some scratches. Then some bass. He then added the cherry on top which was a complete track of bliss. It was a sound that couldn’t be explained other than what it really was; his best work yet. Normally, people would dance along to the beat, move with it, but this time was a bit different. It left some people just staring at DJ Soul as he kept mixing. Under his glasses, his eyes were closed. Even he couldn’t resist moving back and forth to the beat as he played. Vinyl Scratch even stood there in awe, staring at DJ Soul. For some odd reason, she felt herself helplessly shedding a tear at how beautiful it sounded. Every misery was let go and replaced with this enraptured melody. As he continued, he decided to just add a live touch to the track by transitioning to his second song. Instead of rough cutting, he decided to try to mix the entire show. Why not try something new? As he neared the end of his set, he slowed it down and removed the songs piece by piece. Each ingredient of sound being singled out until it was down to the single beat that made up the start of his music. As he faded the song out, there was complete silence before the crowd applauded at the performance. It was much more emotional, this applause. It wasn’t as chaotic or loud as most of his other shows usually were. It was like they witnessed the majestic beauty of a one time occurrence; like something that they will never get the chance to see again. Even DJ Soul became teary eyed behind his glasses as he stepped back to meet the response of the crowd. He felt his lip start to tremble ever so slightly before he composed himself and spoke to the microphone with a quick “Thank you.” Instead of leaving, he stepped down off the stage into the crowd with Vinyl Scratch. For some reason or another, he felt it was just appropriate to give her a hug, his hooves wrapped around her snuggly. She returned the hug before it was let go and Soul started interacting with each of the members of the crowd. It was all smiles and even some happy tears shared between everyone. It took longer for the crowd to break up as many of them lingered around to buy goods and merchandise, and of course say hello to Soul before they left. But when it cleared up as much as it could have, Soul and Vinyl Scratch stuck around as the stage and stalls were being broken down and even his equipment, which the event staff was nice enough to cart back to his home. Together, Soul and Vinyl Scratch started their way back to his studio. “You know. That was my favorite show. Not only that, it was one of the most memorable too…” DJ Soul looked down as he said with a smile still plastering his face before he turned to look at Vinyl. “It was really something special. It took me by surprise just how good it actually was.” Vinyl said with a chuckle. She then continued. “I mean, I love your music, and it’s all great. Some songs have made me feel emotional before, but I was tearing up and couldn’t even explain why… You just manage to always get better.” She then winked at him, causing him to laugh a bit as well. “Well, I appreciate it. I can’t wait to hear your music though. I have faith that it will be just as good!” “I think my music is okay… I don’t know if you’ll like it though. I’ve been experimenting with a lot more synth and bass. It’s all a lot faster too… Though, I originally did remixes and samples of your work.” Soul shook his head. “Don’t worry, I'm sure I will love it… But as far as setting good apart from great is all depending on the artist. I’ll explain when we get in the studio. In fact, I do need to start working on the series of songs. I think I may even have a name.” Vinyl Scratch perked up when she heard the news. “Really! Now you have to tell me the name!” Soul winked. “That’s a secret for now.” Vinyl couldn’t help but pout and giving him a look. “That’s completely unfair, you know!” Soul laughed, looking ahead as they came closer to his house. It was a moderately sized home that looked pretty normal as a home but as a studio, was much different. Soul approached the door that specifically accessed the studio potion of his home and opened it, allowing Vinyl Scratch to enter first. There was just a small reception area before going into where the magic happened. The room was well lit, very clean cut and classy looking. Walls bright red, nice hardwood flooring. The wall to the left was lined with a long single screen hooked up to turntables, another screen hooked up to a couple soundboards and a keyboard next to that, and it even had speakers overhead that were built into the wall. Everything was even accommodated with proper seating in the form of very comfortable office chairs in black leather. Behind that was a step up that was carpeted in black with a separate soundboard on it’s own podium facing the same type of speakers built into the wall and a glass partition that looked into an open room with a microphone that hung from the ceiling on an arm and a stool that sat in the center of the room. As she looked around, she couldn’t help to let out a “Whooooa…”. Soul then followed in and spoke. “I suppose that you like it, yeah?” “Definitely! This is awesome!” “Well, if you want, it’s all yours to use when you’d like. I honestly don’t mind. In fact, if you really are serious about helping me with my album and even doing your own original stuff, then make it like home. This stuff doesn’t happen overnight or anything. In fact it will take quite some time. You can feel free to come over whenever you‘d like and use it. I‘m usually always in here, so just walk right in.” She jumped then turned to tackle Soul into a hug, hooves tightly around him. He laughed before speaking. “Hey, no problem! Don’t worry about it! Let me just introduce you to everything we have to work with here. I’m sure you know most of this equipment and how it works. I just want to get you up to speed with where everything is placed and where most of my music is found…” He began to walk down the left side of the room, motioning to the screens. “These are the computers and soundboards. There are a few and they correspond with the section of the screen the board sits under. All the saves are on a large storage that sits under the soundboards. All the files can be accessed here for most of your beats that you need to make. You can replay them and they play through the speakers unless you set them to your headset by plugging them into the jacks on the boards themselves. I only have one set of turntables over here, but those are for getting samples from vinyl. I plan to sell my album on vinyl this time around…” He then turned to walk toward the podium to the right of the room, Vinyl taking in all the information about his studio. She didn’t want to mess up anything that was rightfully his. He then continued. “This is a soundboard that will transfer anything from the computers to be heard in both here, and the room on the other side of this partition. It can also record any singing that comes from the room as well. I don’t sing or anything, but I figured I may need it in the future. Rather be safe than sorry!” With the last sentence, he turned to give a cheeky smile to Vinyl Scratch. She returned it before he gave her his last statement. “Well! That’s it! They are now yours as they are mine. I believe it’s now your turn to let me hear some of your music though…” Vinyl Scratch was carrying a jump drive on her that had some of her songs. She simply nodded and handed it over to Soul who was quick to plug it into a jack on the soundboard and start manipulating the screens and soundboard to load the music and ready it to be played. He turned the volume up then looked to Vinyl Scratch as though he was looking for her approval to continue. She nodded again, worried that he may not like it. Despite her inspiration, she did a lot more synth type music that was more aggressive with a high BPM. Sure enough, when Soul clicked play, the bass was heavier, the beats faster, and the music much more aggressive than any music that DJ Soul made. Vinyl Scratch was worried that because it was different, that he wouldn’t be approving of the sound of her music. However, Soul simply sat in a chair then closed his eyes and took in the music. It was like, by closing his eyes, he tuned into his sense of sound like it was the only sense he had. His facial expression didn’t even change as he let the track continue. As it closed, he turned to look at Vinyl Scratch within his chair. He motioned for her to take a seat, of which she complied, then he began to speak. “Your music is good, no doubt. I do like it. However, you wanted tips on how to get better and I know the one thing that you need.” He laughed, as his next statement would probably sound stupid at first. He actually expected a smart assed response. “Every song must have soul. Simply put…” He waited for a comment but was met with a slightly awkward silence that he was quick to break. “What I mean is, anyone can organize sounds and call it music. To me, music is taking a piece of your soul and using it to create the track itself. Through that and your love and passion for music, that organization of sounds can truly be called music. In order to make a good song, you have to be in the same mindset you want your listeners to be in. That’s why I have my own studio. When I come in here and start making music, I forget all the outside influences. Anything that may interfere with my music simply does not enter this room. I let go of anything and everything outside that door and that’s when it can happen. As for my putting my personal touch… If it’s a sad song, then I think about something that I can’t help but be brought to tears over. A happy song, just remember something that no matter how hard I try, it seems to always bring a smile to my face.” As Soul spoke, Vinyl Scratch nodded, heeding each word he said. “I mean, I’m sure you get the gist of it all but you’ll need to just work with what makes you comfortable. I could just keep saying this over and over but it won’t happen until you find out until you get in the right mindset. Just try to remember to do that when you come in here. Reincarnate yourself in the form of sound waves.” She was taken aback by the way he philosophically put a spin on things. While it did sound a bit outlandish, she did get what he was trying to say. He took the time to listen to a couple other songs of hers, though he didn’t criticize them as he was sure that he got his point across anyways. Really, he was just listening because he enjoyed her music anyways. Soul stood and stretched. He started to walk to the doorway that connected his home to the studio. As he reached it, he stood at the opening as he turned back to speak to Vinyl Scratch. “Out of curiosity, are you a fan of tea?” “I don’t mind it.” She gave a smile that was returned by Soul as he left. “Well, go ahead and start familiarizing yourself with the studio itself. There are controls for each of the screens. Go ahead and look around.” Soul then slinked away, leaving Vinyl Scratch to be like a kid in a candy shop. She started to walk around the room, giving closer inspection to the instruments that he had within the room. A lot of them were the newest yet still looked pretty used, though it was mostly cosmetic and wouldn’t interrupt the working condition of the equipment. She started thinking back to a previous conversation that had and her curiosity still peaked. She quickly started scrolling around on the computers directory for anything that may be labeled in the way of ‘current music’ or ‘albums’. Sure enough, with a little bit of snooping, there was a folder that sat alone in a ‘current projects’ folder. It was simply labeled ‘Love Sick’, and contained two tracks. ‘Two tracks?’, she thought? She wanted to listen, but she got a bit nervous as she didn’t want to be looking at anything she didn’t want to be and decided to close out the directory. Then again, she wasn’t against asking him to try to force the confirmation of the name out of him. She simply went back to the directory, this time looking at samples and what she had to work with. The amount of music he had on here seemed almost innumerable. She closed it out and moved down to his turntables, the very ones she watched him mix on at every show she witnessed. To see something that was always out of reach now be something she could use at her own free made her still feel slightly dream state. I mean, it’s something she would have given any amount of bits to have and now he was pretty much hers, in a sense. She spun the turntables, despite them not being on or with a vinyl on top, and started to examine the different switches and buttons that sat on the overlay of the device. She continued down the row, examining everything, though she really was doing that to pass time because she wasn’t completely comfortable with simply treating this all as it was her own. It was an excuse to say that she was “looking” so she didn’t really have to touch anything. The rattle could be heard as Soul carried in a pot of tea along with the appropriate serving dishes for the both of them. He set them on the open counter space and began to pour the steaming tea into each cup. Soul took a seat in one of the chairs before speaking. “I know it’s not the most formal of settings for this, but since the day is half over and I’ll only be getting a very small portion of work done, I figured I’d really take the time to relax, if that’s okay with you.” He smiled at Vinyl Scratch, blowing on his tea in an attempt to cool it down though it was rather futile since a quick breath wouldn’t really do much. Vinyl Scratched giggled before giving her retort. “No, it’s fine. I think it’s just cool to be here. I’m excited to actually work with you.” “Well, I’m flattered. And I agree. It’s nice to have someone to work with on a project. Also, did you find everything to your liking after looking around?” Vinyl nodded before she decided to go for it and try to prod for an answer. “I did. I also came across something interesting.” Soul decided to take a quick taste of his tea. Just after he took the sip, he began to sit it down in the middle of his response. “Something interesting?” “What is this Love Sick project? I don’t think I have heard of it before.” Soul kind of figured she’d of seen it, chuckling a bit at the question. “It seems someone is quite inquisitive.” “I’m just a natural Sherlock Holmes, Soul!” She said sarcastically yet playfully, winking as she did. Soul nodded and decided he may as well give her the in depth answer she was much too curious to find out about. “Alright, well… Love Sick is what I want to name the album. The reason being…” He stopped, trying to find the right words. He didn’t want to sound overly philosophical nor did he want to lack any real sense. “Music is the one love of my life that has never failed me. Through music, I have found everything that makes me who I am. Literally, there is just much love in me I have got to give. I give it by creating the wonderful tracks of mine that people enjoy… So much love, that I feel Love Sick. Thus the name… If that makes sense.” He couldn’t help but laugh as he probably sounded like a crazy old man or something. Within all of the description, Vinyl Scratch finally began to partake in the tea as well. “Well, I like it nevertheless. I think it’s something different. I would definitely pick it up if I saw the name alone. However, I’m going to get the chance to participate in it. I think I’m obligated to be the first to buy it.” “You think I’m going to make you buy it? You get to have your very own copy when it’s finished.” Vinyl Scratch lightly blushed. “Already showering me with gifts? What can I say?” She stuck her tongue out playfully. Soul takes a sip once more of his tea. “Of course! That’s just how cool I am. It starts with tea, then with music. Eventually, it‘ll be the studio!” He continued to laugh, almost in an ‘as if’ manner but not specifically directing it to be rude. “Well, anyways. You brought it up so, I believe you’d like to hear this…” Soul said, standing up and relieving his tea to the countertop. He scrolled through his directory and pulled a project up on the screen. “I want you to hear the progress. Love Sick will be an album that is completely continuous. The songs all melt into each other so that it doesn’t lose momentum or emotion when you listen to it… Come here.” He waved for Vinyl Scratch to get closer, Vinyl Scratch complying. They stood, side by side as the melody filled the room in all of it’s beauty. Soul closed his eyes, his head bobbing to the beat of the song. He put his arm around Vinyl Scratch, as they both began to rhythmically and simultaneously moved their heads. Tears started to form at the closed lids of Soul's eyes, despite the fact that he held a small smile. He felt even better when he knew that he could share something so personal with someone. He knew that this would be the start of something great. As the music ended, the room slowly falling silent, Soul leaned against Vinyl Scratch and spoke. “Tomorrow, we should start.” > Chapter 3 > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Much time passed. The two had spent many, many months working together in the studio. She spent quite a few nights, some sleepless, as they worked on Love Sick. Vinyl Scratch took time during the project as well to ask questions and absorb the words that Soul shared with her on her music and how to better herself. Over the time, four parts of the Love Sick series were created. As for Vinyl Scratch’s music, with a bit of help from Soul, she refined and created some wonderful tracks herself that even Soul himself felt proud of. During this period, Soul had seen Vinyl Scratch grow into an incredible musician before his very eyes. He knew she had potential and felt extremely proud to be apart of helping her become so experienced in the art of music. After a while, he didn’t feel like she was a student; He never felt superior to her. With that demeanor, it created a mutual bond felt between the two of them. They cared for each other, even in a personal sense. They moved past the connection of just being a fan of his celebrity and created a close relationship. They obviously shared the love for music and enjoyed creating music together, even if they had to take breaks periodically. They spent time going out and having lunch or dinner with each other, going out for walks and just enjoying the scenery, or checking out local events that were put on by the town including celebrating holidays together. They always had plenty of time to just talk about each other, whether it was about their past, present, or future. Vinyl Scratch, by this time, probably knew more about Soul than most others. Soul really thought that Vinyl Scratch was going to go all the way with her musical career and wanted to help her take advantage of that. With all the time he has spent helping her in the studio, it was only right to get her some stage time and let her finally create a true onstage persona. He had planned a few local shows in different venues, just to have a little fun and play some tracks for the fans. Normally, he wouldn’t unveil anything new in shows like this or do anything major; as that was for the large tours of shows. However, he was going to let Vinyl Scratch open for these shows and play the music she worked so hard on. A week or so before the show, the two sat in the studio discussing the plan and set list. He hadn’t broken the news to her, he wanted it to be a surprise. As they sat side by side, he snuck it into conversation. “Alright. Well, the show is going to be a blast for the both of us. For the songs, I’d like to play a lot of my older stuff, from back when I first started. I figure I’ll play a lot of the music I usually miss out on when I play the larger shows.” DJ soul said. “Sounds awesome! It has been awhile since I’ve even had the chance to hear some of the original stuff. I’m excited to just see you on stage again, even though I’ve pretty much been here the whole time. I just can’t shake the emotions that come with being in that sort of atmosphere of everypony in a trance from your beats.” Vinyl Scratch replied. She leaned over to nudge him, winking, as she followed up with her next statement jokingly. “Does this mean I get to watch for free, eh, eh?” Soul laughed and held a smile as he gave a retort. “You really think I’d make you pay to come to the show. Of course it’s free. Because you’re in it.” She stopped and looked at him, perplexed. “Wait, how can I be in it? Am I mixing with you?” Soul shook his head. “No, no. You’re getting your own set. I want you to open for me.” She was nervous yet thrilled to hear that. At first, her apprehension spoke for her. “But my music sounds different compared to yours… Besides, the crowd is there to hear you! Do you think the crowd will respond well to me?” Soul stood up and stood in front of Vinyl Scratch. He placed his hooves gently on her shoulders as he spoke seriously.” “Your music is some of the most amazing music I have ever heard, and I say that with all my heart. You have a ton of potential to be a great musician; to be better than me. I know you’ll do it. These ponies need to hear what you have created. Your music is so energetic and upbeat that, with my music to follow, it is sure to bring them down from the adrenaline rush and into a relaxed state, creating a combination of bliss. In other words, don’t stress it; Things will work out.” Soul smiled then kissed Vinyl Scratch on the forehead, before looking her in the eyes. As she looked back up at him, she began to tear up and smile before sinking her face into him and hugging him as tight as she could. She was ecstatic and wanted to give him many words of gratitude but her emotions only allowed her three muffled words. “Thank you, Soul.” The night finally arrived, for her first performance on stage. The venue was small, much more personal, but a great place to start for Vinyl Scratch. They stood behind the curtain before it was time to start the show. Vinyl Scratch was nervous but she knew that it would go away when her music filled the room. Soul then spoke some final words before she took the stage. “Hey, don’t be nervous. Just make the stage yours, own the crowd, and the rest will follow. I know that you’ll do well, so don’t worry about it, Also… I got something for you.” He revealed a pair of glasses that were different than the ones he always wore nowadays. They had a much more spherical shape to the lenses unlike his which were much more rectangular. He place them on her head, resting just above her eyes, then continued. “A good luck charm. These were the glasses I used to wear when I first started playing live shows. Maybe they’ll serve you well like they did me.” She smiled then turned, about to take the stage. Before she did, Soul tugged her slightly and gave her one final remark. “Also… Knock ‘em dead.” Soul smiled with Vinyl Scratch nodding and taking stage. As she took the stage, the crowd continued to chatter, giving a light form of applause. A lot of them were just wondering who was on stage. Vinyl Scratch walked up to the turntables and got ready to start her set. She pulled the microphone in closer so she could introduce herself and get on with the set, but she was momentarily stopped by her own slight anxiety. She slowly eased herself into an introduction. “How is everyone--” A heckler in the crowd took advantage of her shyness and rudely cut her off. “Where’s Soul? Who’s this, another wannabe ‘DJ Pony’?” Vinyl Scratch was taken aback by the comment. Her attitude changed with that comment, however. She recovered from the surprise, then what aggravation she built from the comment allowed her to reply. In her head, she thought. ‘DJ Pony? I’m an electric artist. DJ P0N3 is more like it.’ Though it seemed a bit irrational of a name at first, she would use it as fuel in her follow up statement. She looked back at the heckler and decided to single him out. “You were pretty close, but DJ P0N3 is what I go by.” She knocked her glasses down over her eyes and put her headphones on. “Now it’s time to rock this damn place!” She accidentally created her name and with that brash display of character, she spun the tabletop and let the beat hit. The crowd was just as taken aback to the change of pace as Vinyl Scratch was to the comment earlier. She started to bob her head with the beat as well. The crowd slowly started to take to the music; though it was much different to the slow, nostalgic, and natural sound of Soul, this still hit all the right feelings and created a very upbeat and invigorating atmosphere. The beat continued, speed building up. Everyone started to feel the electricity and really connected to the music; bobbing their heads faster and harder with the beat. It was then that the beat dropped and the bass pounded the chest of everyone, forcing them to jump and grow into a controlled chaos. Even Vinyl Scratch couldn’t help but jump and feel the beat. She looked back at the crowd, who were not too sure who this pony was, as they welcomed her with open arms when they realized the talent that Soul first saw. Through all of the pulse pounding adrenaline, Soul stood by and watched. He looked almost out of place as he was only bobbing his head and smiling. He was just as into it as everyone else, however he was such a calm pony, that he was easily keeping his physical composure. Inside, however, he was overwhelmed with the majestic sight. Vinyl was a hit for her debut. Vinyl knew she had time for only a couple more songs, since she was just an opening act. She made sure not to lose momentum and made sure that each of the songs faded into one another. The party was nonstop and many ponies were enveloped. She played to the crowd and the energy was at it’s peak. She managed to keep it there for the entirety of her set. Once it was over and the beat dropped out into utter silence, the crowd showed their thanks for such a hell of a show with the biggest applause they could muster. Vinyl Scratch stood there, throwing her hoof in the air to return the gratitude that they crowd had shown her. She mouthed ‘thank you’ to the crowd, forgetting she had a microphone, though it was pretty much impossible for anyone to have heard her over such a rapturous crowd. She then walked behind the curtain to Soul and hugged him before he then made his way out to the crowd. Just when the crowd was about to close their cheering, they steadily kept it up with the appearance of DJ Soul. He smiled to the crowd and yelled in respond. “How are you guys tonight?!” The crowd tried to scream louder though it was already at the peak. He chuckled to himself as he realized he was going to refer to Vinyl Scratch as a name he had only just heard her make up. “DJ P0N3 everybody!” He paused before continuing. The crowed quieted down, allowing DJ Soul to speak. “I want to thank her so much for opening the show tonight. She is just too amazing…” He turned to look at her as he spoke the end of his sentence. As he looked back at the crowd, he opened up a simple beat to start his set. As the set progressed, he managed to take everypony from the fast paced mood that Vinyl Scratch created down to the slow euphoria that Soul was known for creating and perfecting. They were now stuck in the atmosphere that Soul would usually create in all of his shows, the crowd back to slowly moving with the blissful beats. Once the set was over, and the mood finally settled, ponies were joyously lined up to see Soul who was with this up and comer known as ‘DJ P0N3’. They both were mingling with the crowd. It was weird for Vinyl Scratch as she started out being the one pushing through the crowd to meet Soul and now, she was creating a name and they wanted to meet her to remember it. By no means was she as big as DJ Soul, but it was really humbling to be a notable pony; more so, to be well-known along side DJ Soul. As the crowd left, so did Soul and Vinyl Scratch. Being local, they began to walk home together. “You know, I told you that you would do well. The crowd loved you; I mean it, you were simply incredible up there. “ Soul said. “Thanks! Don’t discredit yourself though; you were great as always. That was really intense. I’ve never felt anything like that!” Vinyl Scratch replied, thrilled in her response. “Well, if you want to give it a shot, would you like to open up the other couple of shows as well? It’d be really mean a lot to me if you did, honestly. It’s so refreshing to see such a pumped up crowd like that from the point of a fan. I don’t get to attend other artist’s concerts since I’m constantly busy on my projects.” Vinyl Scratch giggled slightly before responding. “You know I would be honored.” As the next couple of weeks went by, so did the performances. The performances sold out and lived up to the expectation of greatness. The fan base of DJ Soul started to recognize a new name in town: DJ P0N3. Many ponies rushed to meet her to see just who this new DJ was. People also started to recognize that this duo would go on to do something great, very soon. After the shows were done, they were back in the studio and ready to work on the next project. It hadn’t been very long since their last few shows when somepony contacted Soul at the studio and spoke with him about a charity event for the underprivileged. They asked about having him not only play, but do so for free. However, this show was far out of the way and he had to travel out to see the venue and how he would set up in advance. As he returned back to the room with Vinyl Scratch, he told her about the event. “So, how does it sound? I am extremely excited! You definitely have to be there as well!” Soul spoke with his unwavering attitude as always. “You know I support you all the way! Of course I’ll be there. When do they want you down there?” “Well, the event is a month or so off but I’m going to leave in a couple of days by train to go ahead and see the venue. I need to know just how much equipment to bring and what I can actually fit into the venue. I figure I’ll just head down in the morning and come in late at night. By train, it shouldn’t be too long if I leave early enough. Is that okay?” Vinyl Scratch hugged Soul affectionately. “Yeah, yeah.” She gave a quick chuckle before continuing. “Just promise to be careful and be back home soon.” “Hey, don’t worry about me. You’ll barely notice that I’m gone.” Finally, the morning of Soul’s departure arrived. The sun barely peaked the horizon, leaving a grey morning sky when Soul decided to get up to leave. Vinyl Scratch stayed the night in the guest room of Soul’s home that night, like a lot of nights. Soul slinked into her room quietly, though she had opened her eyes slowly to see Soul. Tiredly, she gave a bright smile as Soul went to her bedside and leaned in to speak. “It’s time for me to go. Like I said, I’ll be back soon… I’ll miss you, though.” Soul whispered. Vinyl smiled even more at the comment, slightly blushing as well. “You know I’ll miss you… Hey, like I said. Be careful okay? Hurry back.” She responded, still a bit groggy. They continued to look at each other, Soul leaning down into a hug. Instead, he met her lips, kissing her gently. Vinyl Scratch was surprised but not unhappy with him. Instead she let her hooves grasp his shoulders, as the kiss lasted moments longer. As they came apart, they didn’t speak. They shared a comfortable moment of silence before their smiles spoke for them. Soul turned, then left the home on his trip out of town. Vinyl Scratch figured that she would have the whole day to be lazy since Soul was going to be gone. Instead of being up early to work, she turned over and slowly drifted back into a tranquil sleep. It was almost the afternoon when she finally woke up. Vinyl Scratch sat up in her bed, rubbing her eyes and stretching with a morning yawn to relieve some of the fatigue of sleeping in. She walked into the kitchen, preparing some hot tea. She had spent so much time around Soul and his home that she was drinking a lot more tea with him. More so, she was used to the habit of one of them making it and it being ready for the mornings. She always felt it was so overly formal to drink tea and used to laugh at the idea, but thanks to Soul, it was something that very quickly grew on her. She took her tea with her to the studio and leisurely laid back in one of the chairs, sipping away and playing back the Love Sick tracks in order. They blended beautifully and made a great sound to wake up to. After some time had passed, she finished the music, finished her tea, and soon afterwards, left the studio to stroll around the town to enjoy the beautiful day. She usually was by the side of Soul, but wasn’t worried since she knew he’d be back soon. There was a couple times where she replayed her morning when she saw Soul and couldn’t help but crack a smile to the thought which kept her feeling bubbly throughout her day. As day turned to night, she had a lovely dinner out by herself at a local place that Soul took her to a while back. When she arrived, the staff remembered her and treated her by name as they did Soul. She was somewhat known locally now, which had people greeting her when she was out every now and again; some people bringing up how her performance was great or how they can’t wait to see another. It really boosted her confidence and definitely made her day much brighter. By nighttime, she was back at the home of Soul. She was expecting that he’d be home soon. However, time passed and it became later into the night. She didn’t think much of it. In fact, she figured he got caught up and stayed in the other town and would leave in the morning. She woke up to a knock at the door. She abruptly opened her eyes and sat upright. However, she figured that Soul would answer since he was usually up early anyhow. That wasn’t the case, as the knocking continued. She then got up and worked her way to the door. As she opened the door, she saw two well dressed stallions with a serious demeanor on both of their faces. One of them cleared their throat and spoke. “Hello. You must be Vinyl Scratch.” At first, she was surprised. A moment of silence passed before she could retort. “Um, yes sir…” They looked at each other and then back at Vinyl Scratch. “Well then. We work with local law enforcement and they sent us over here to speak with you. May we come in?” “Of course.” Vinyl Scratch said, stepping aside. They entered, seating themselves in the living room of the home with Vinyl Scratch following suit. She was the first to reengage the conversation. “Is everything alright?” The two stallions looked down, dejected from what they were about to tell her. “No ma’am. We have some unfortunate news about Soul…” Instead of letting them finish, she was quick to respond with a worrisome “What do you mean?” They realized the distressed state they were beginning to put her in. They quickly followed up and continued. “Early yesterday morning, there was an accident. Soul took a train which was making it’s final stop into Canterlot. However, it never made it. On the outskirts of the one of the smaller outlaying towns, a few of the rear cars of the train derailed from a turn. The equipment that hitches the cars was faulty, thus causing the accident. Since it was early, not many people were on board and those cars specifically were nearly empty. They tumbled down the embankment and initially, everyone survived the ordeal when local law enforcement arrived. However, they were unable to receive additional transport in time and Soul passed away on the scene. They stopped the train very quickly and came back to help those injured. Officials on the scene were surprised that Soul was able to survive after the impact, much less stay conscious.” The two stallions paused. For several seconds, Vinyl Scratch was in complete shock. As the two went further into their statement, her eyes started to well up before she could no longer hold back tears. She looked down to try to cover her face as the two stallions finished. She was in utter disbelief; almost denial. She certainly didn’t want to believe it was true. “I’m so sorry ma’am… Do you have someone you can stay with?” The two stallions spoke. One of them leaned in to rest his hoof on her shoulder, which Vinyl Scratch just ignored. She didn’t look up at first as she spoke, but tried to wipe her tears and look up as she responded. “No, I’ll be fine here.” The two faltered. They had more they were supposed to say but didn’t want to hurt the mare anymore. Despite that, they had obligations to continue. “Ma’am, Soul did have some final words with one of the passengers.” Vinyl Scratch just sat there, trying to compose herself, though she could feel herself losing the ability to. “He said, ‘Just tell Vinyl Scratch that I’ll always watch over her and that I love her. It’ll all be okay, so don’t feel down. I’m sure the view will be beautiful on the other side.’ before he finally succumbed to the injury. The passenger said that he could tell Soul didn’t think he was going to make it when he helped pull him from the car.” Vinyl Scratch cringed up in the chair and openly began to weep when she heard that. She was much too overwhelmed by what he said. More so that she had to deal with the fact that she wouldn’t see him ever again. She didn’t hold back as she cried. The stallion that had his hoof on her moved to her side to try to calm her down and comfort her. The other that sat across from her looked away, feeling woeful for having to be the one to deliver the news. No one said anything, as she needed to let it out instead of a simple sorry. “If I may, can I be alone?” She said. The two stallions then stood. “Of course, if that’s what you would like. We will have information sent to you on the funeral. Will you still be staying here or at your residence?” “I’ll be here.” Normally, she would go home every now and again, but she wasn’t ready to let go and wouldn’t be for a while. When the two stallions left and she closed the door behind them, she went back to bed, tears still falling down her face. As she crawled back into her sheets, she wrapped her arms around a pillow as tight as she could and started to force herself back to sleep. She whispered to herself aloud, as though Soul could hear her. “Soul, I love you too. I wish I could of just said goodbye…” As a week went by, many grieved. Ponies that were fans of his music periodically stopped by to drop flowers by his front door. Vinyl Scratch soon vacated the home and went back to hers, as it was starting to effect her to stay in his home. She was already depressed and she didn’t want the good memories to be tainted by the bad ones in that home. Despite her emotions, she wanted to attend the funeral. It was set to be a private funeral for friends and family. She pulled herself together, dressed well and prepared to go to the funeral. Within the church lay the casket, which was closed, as family and friends adorned in black began to enter and take their seats. Vinyl sat on the second row, behind some of the ponies that were very close friends to Soul and Vinyl knew as well. One of them specifically turned and pat her on the shoulder with the look of empathy before turning back in their seat. A few people cried through out the program and a few people spoke. It wasn’t until the end of the speakers when Vinyl Scratch was invited up to speak. She wasn’t informed that she was going to be asked to do so but wasn’t against it. She stood slowly, doing everything meticulously in such a fashion that her emotions were showing. She walked upon the podium, looked up the grieving ponies, and gave a moment of silence before she made her statement. She exhaled, which could be heard through the speakers before leaning into the microphone. “Soul was an incredible stallion. Simply put. He meant so much to me personally, not just as my favorite artist, but as the stallion that-…” She paused, as what she would say next would bring tears to her eyes once more. “… as the stallion that I fell in love with. He taught me so much about music and the way he felt about music in general was just so inspiring that he couldn’t help but fill the darkest room with the brightest light. He was just so positive and he emulated that positive vibe to everypony he came in contact with. The last words he spoke, he said that he’d always be watching from above and if that’s the case, I just want to say one more thing to him…” She stopped once more and looked back at everypony with tears still in her eyes. Though her lips quivered, she found the strength to compose herself and continue. “Soul, I just want you to know that we all love and miss you. If you are watching over us, which I’m sure it really is a beautiful view, I just want you to know that from now on, I’ll take the stage only in honor of you. Just know that you were one of a kind and you will always live in our hearts and I must tell you Soul. You really did live beautifully. Again, I love you Soul.” She turned away and started to tear up more, but left the podium and started to return to her seat once again. Despite it being a private funeral, outside the visitation and burial was a large group of ponies all showing their respect for Soul. Though they weren’t allowed to attend the viewing or the burial, they stood by quietly through the entire service. Some of them even held flowers to place upon the grave, even though there was an ensemble of flowers to adorn his front door. Vinyl Scratch learned that the studio would be put in her name, as it was the wish of Soul. Even though she spoke of taking the stage in honor of Soul, she never stepped back on stage after his funeral. Much less, she never even returned back to the studio. She couldn’t bear to keep being reminded of all the great things that took place in that house between the two of them. She stayed at home each and everyday, trying to block it all from her mind. Usually, it didn’t work and she would find it extremely difficult to sleep or to do so without crying. Unfortunately, she was taking his death the hardest. She was so used to waking up and seeing him there, sharing tea with him in the mornings, strolling around town with him, making beautiful creations of music with him, having a lunch at a local restaurant with him, and most importantly, she was used to having the one she loved around. After all this, music was the last thing on her mind. She felt as though her music career was over. Months would pass before something amazing would happen. Vinyl Scratch decided that she wanted to see Soul once again. She left one morning to visit Soul’s gravesite. As she approached the tombstone, she sat beside it, instead of in front, and leaned against it. She lifted the glasses that Soul gave her from her eyes and rested them on her head. Looking at her, you could tell that the depression was eating away at her. She looked fatigued and feeble. She wasn’t sleeping as much, and her appetite was nearly gone. She spent most days just staying inside, only barely getting by. As she sat by the tombstone, she spoke directly to Soul. “How have you been?” She paused as though she would get a response. Soon after, she just continued speaking. “I miss you so much… I just wish you would come back. It’s so different without you here. I haven’t really been able to accept it, you know? I don’t want it to be true, like this is some sick nightmare. That maybe I’ll just wake up and everything will be back to normal. I just don’t know what to do now. I just want to be able to see you one more time, hug you one more time… kiss you one more time. I should of went with you…” After that, she just sat there. She stayed there, leaned up against the tombstone. Eventually, after an hour or so, she started to slowly doze off. It was then when something happened. She started to hear something- no, someone. It was a voice, one that she recognized. “Vinyl… I can’t stand to see you like this. I know it hurts but you’ll be okay. It was just my time to move on from Earth. However, you’re a strong girl. I know you can overcome this. Just because you can’t see me day to day or spend time like we used to doesn’t mean that I’m not here, and it doesn‘t mean that our times together are over. Remember, I said I’d always watch over you and I’ve held up my side of the bargain. Please, just pull yourself together.” Vinyl Scratch tried so hard to wake herself up, yet she was in too deep of a sleep to force herself awake. “Finally, I can sit at your shows as a fan and listen. After all, I was right. This really is the best seat in the house. Promise me that you’ll continue to make music. You shouldn’t throw everything away, you’re better than that. Like I said, I’ll always be here watching over you. Remember, I love you Scratch. With all my heart.” A jolt shot through Vinyl Scratch’s body, waking her up and making her jump just a bit. Reflexively, she looked around. It sounded all too real for him to not be here. She didn’t know what just happened. Was it just a dream? Was all of that in her head? Was he really just there? It was somewhat of a shock to her. She didn’t know what to do. All she did, however, was sit there and wait. > Chapter 4 > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Vinyl Scratch sat there for hours, until the sun was beginning to make its descent. She finally returned home, a dismal look upon her face. As she walked home, she took the time to contemplate just what exactly happened but she could only come to the conclusion that it was just all in her head. She forced herself to try to accept that it wasn't real and that she needed to get over it. However, that was a piece of hope that she didn't have. Hearing his voice again, it was creating an internal conflict between real and fake. She just wanted to know if he really was trying to get through to her, if he really wanted her to get on her hooves and get back to doing what they loved. For the first time since Soul’s passing, Vinyl Scratch decided to visit the studio. Despite it being attached to the house, she spent a lot of time pent up in her room for months. She didn't really go out much to see anyone or go anywhere that she didn't have to. She was really just attempting the bare minimum to get by without Soul because she didn't realize, until he was gone, how much she truly loved him. As she walked down the hall to the door that opened up to the studio, she stood their with her hoof placed flat upon the door. She paused, thinking about what will happen when she goes back into this room again. It was almost like she expected Soul to be sitting on the other side of the door, in his chair, drinking his tea while listening to music with that same mellow smile of his. As she pushed the door open, her eyes closed and she let herself finally enter the room. It wasn't until the door shut behind her that she opened her eyes, tears at the corners of each of them. She walked around the room slowly, touching everything as it was. This room and everything that happened here would always be her closest connection to him. The touch of the dials on the soundboards, the tops on the turntables, the keys on the keyboard kept fulfilling the feeling his presence within the studio as they created wonderful music together. The tears would slowly make their way down her face, though she was able to keep a smile on her face. That presence she felt was enough to remind her that regardless of what she decided to make of what she heard as she sat by his headstone, she knew that he was there and he was watching over her. The proof was that every time she was with Soul, she would always smile. With eyes still welled up, she sat in Soul’s seat and ran her hooves across the counter before looking up at the monitor and starting to look through the music files he left behind. She noticed that there was one unfinished file, an unfinished song. It was just a beat and a couple rhythm sections but it needed work. It was labeled ‘part five’ and sat within the folder as she expected it to be. ‘Love Sick’. It was already mixed at the beginning to fit the part before it, so it would be the best starting point. She decided right then and there that she would use this as a way to get back on all hooves. She not only wanted to finish this, but she wanted to have a farewell concert for him and it wouldn't just be great music but it would also be as visually beautiful as she could possibly make it. It wouldn't be hard electronic music or heavy bass but the soft, melodic beats everyone would only expect of Soul. It would be the first time anyone had ever heard all five parts, finished and mixed all together, at one concert. Vinyl Scratch would sit there and slowly get back in the routine of working diligently, as she would as if Soul was there by her side. However, there are certain things that would remind her of Soul, things that would bring a tear to her eyes. All she could do was brush it from her eye, try to smile, and keep on working. Vinyl Scratch would go home after finishing work on the song so that she could sleep and come back the next day but it wasn't long until she found herself sleeping in the same bed when she stayed at Soul’s home when they used to work together. The first night, she did cry a bit. She’d lie there, watching the door as if Soul would walk in and say, “I’m back home.” Though, the memory would not haunt her and her work would continue. Eventually, she could move on, happy about the times she spent though it would always bring a bittersweet feeling from time to time. She would play the song back and listen for all the subtle variations of beats and sounds. Her body would sway in her chair as she moved with the music, letting the beauty of it all overtake her every time. She kept the beat strong yet simplistic with a rhythmic and slightly melancholic piano. This was exactly what she wanted to present to not just everyone, but to present to Soul if he really was watching. As time would progress, time would heal her wound. Vinyl Scratch found that with the time she spent in the studio doing what she loved, she found it easier to get by. She would go about doing things as she would normally. Going out to eat, hanging around town, even looking around for local music shows. The place Soul and her used to frequent was still her place of choice. The people who worked there also recognized her as if not a day had gone by, although it had been months since she had been there. Everyone welcomed her return to the diner as a regular. Even people who were eating there recognized her, only this time as a DJ. In fact, as she went around town, people would still recognize her. Some people were quite surprised, as it had been so long since they had seen Vinyl Scratch around the area. Little moments like this made her realize that her reintegration with society was not only possible, but was coming to fruition. She used her time wisely, planning the concert so that it would be perfect. After all, it was sort of like a going away present. She felt as though she owed him this and she wouldn't accept anything less than perfection. It all started with the long, tireless nights of creating the rest of part five to ultimately complete the masterpiece of Love Sick. She would constantly examine and modify every nuance of the song. She was taught to be very meticulous as music wasn't a hobby, it was a passion. When it was something as personal as this, it was absolutely necessary that it was impeccable. Upon completion, she immediately booked the show at the only place she would allow this concert to happen. The Canterlot Music Hall where she first met Soul. They were eager to have her play the show there and had no qualms about her decision. She even went around town handing out flyers and telling everyone about the show to come, the farewell show for DJ Soul. In the time leading up to the impending concert for Soul, Vinyl found herself fulfilling her dream and the wishes of Soul that she remembers hearing so vividly on the fateful day. She booked small concerts in venues all over Canterlot and began to tour as a solo artist. The big show was way off, so not only would she use this time to showcase her talents as a musician, she would use this time to heal. This would be her proper grieving process, as locking herself in her home and spending sleepless nights with a racing mind was counterproductive. Finally, she would stand strong since his passing. Vinyl Scratch brought fans from everywhere, those who remember her first jump on the scene and those who are hearing her name for the first time. She wanted to get as many shows in as she could leading up to the day, tearing up the stage with a smile on her face and her hoof in the air. Each show was special, each moment she shared with both fans and Soul would be memorable. She would even imagine Soul standing there, right in the front row during some of her shows. It gave her extra motivation to give it her all and more for everyone, including him. It didn't take long before she began to receive invites or requests to play at places like parks, halls, and even restaurants from fans all across Equestria. She accepted as many shows as she could fit in her schedule. It was a bit tiring but she didn't care, she loved it. She loved seeing all the fans, hearing them chant her name. There was a time where she even found herself brought to tears of happiness when near the closing of her set, the crowd chanted Soul’s name. After each of these shows, she made it a point to stop and speak to fans. She would sometimes hang out with them after shows, do signings, even go to an after party with them. She didn't want fans to think she was this overly famous pony with no connection to her fans. She wanted her fans to be her friends. The last show before the DJ Soul tribute concert was a large, outdoor concert that flooded the venue. Vinyl Scratch couldn't speak over the crowd as they roared at the end of her show. She stood center stage and waved her hoof, mouthing “Thank you.” to everyone. She normally would walk back stage but she appreciated the amplitude of this concert that would be the predecessor of the greatest show of her life and decided to jump down from the front of the stage and into the crowd. The fans surrounded her and continued to cheer as she would hoof bump and hug them, walking straight through the crowd. > Chapter 5 > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Today was the day that Vinyl Scratch had looked forward to for so very long. It was the day of the tribute concert for Soul, the one she worked so hard to put on. She was extremely excited yet nervous as she knew that Soul would be there in spirit, watching her perform for him. She got up very early that morning, and then made her way through Soul’s studio to get the tracks for not only previous compositions by Soul, but the completed mix of Love Sick. Since all of the other studio equipment was already set up at the music hall, she then quickly made her way to Canterlot. She boarded a train and was seated, idly looking out the window, as she awaited the departure of the train. Shortly after, she was accompanied by two travelers who took their seats just across from her. At first, they just fiddled around with their belongings before they each took a good look at who they sat across from. “W-wait… Are you DJ PON3?” One of the two asked. Vinyl Scratch looked over at the two and nodded with a smile. “Oh, yes. I am.” She said, blushing slightly at the attention. “Wow, I can’t believe I’m getting to meet you! We’re just on our way to your show in Canterlot! My name is Anemone and this is my friend Eureka.” Anemone extended her hoof. Vinyl extended her own hoof and gave her a bump in greeting. “We’re super excited to see your show! Especially since it’s a tribute to DJ Soul. We were actually there when you debuted at his show.” Vinyl giggled before responding. “Well, thank you so much! I’ve been working really hard on this show. It has to be perfect… I just hope I don’t let him down.” Eureka leaned in and placed a hoof on Vinyl Scratch’s shoulder. “Don’t worry, I know he’ll be proud. He’ll be watching.” Vinyl smiled before Anemone continued on. “You two seemed very close. I’ve seen you two around town a few times and I have to say, you two looked adorable together.” “Well, I loved him. I loved him very much. At first, I envied his talent and saw him as an inspiration. But as I got to know him, he was more than that. He was my true love. I still love him obviously, but I do miss waking up to that smell of tea. He always was a morning person and was up well before me. I miss seeing him sit back in his chair as he listened to music in the studio. He was always just so radiant and gave off nothing but good vibes. I’ll never forget the time we shared.” Vinyl Scratch began to tear up, but she held them in. Eureka and Anemone simply sat back and smiled as they understood what she was feeling as a comfortable silence overcame the three of them. The train soon arrived at its destination. The three stood from their seats and as they did, Anemone and Eureka both took a chance to hug Vinyl Scratch. “Hey, good luck. We’ll be cheering you on the loudest, okay?” Anemone said. Vinyl Scratch nodded and smiled as the two stepped off the train. Vinyl Scratch let the crowd of people rushing off the train die down before she finally got off as well. The town was full of fans strolling around, waiting for the show to start. Posters with both DJ Soul and Vinyl Scratch’s names on them were posted across the town, vendors with open stalls selling their goods for the crowds. As Vinyl Scratch made her way down to the music hall, occasionally she’d hear someone yell her name or wave at her. The attention was quite flattering and she couldn’t stop smiling. On the way, she did stop at a few stalls to pick up a bite to eat and had a look at some of the fan made stuff. Signs, hats, glasses that were like the ones she wore, and much more. It was surprising that the turnout was so large but there was serious hype behind this show. It started to sink it and the pressure was starting to build on Vinyl Scratch, making her more nervous, but she continued to just think about Soul to get by. When she finally arrived at the music hall, the staff could be seen checking and double checking the equipment, making sure everything was in place and working correctly when the time came. She walked around the stage, examining the equipment as well and greeting the staff as she did, before finally going up to the turntables. The same ones DJ Soul used. She quickly began to upload her mixes so they would be ready for the show. She was especially excited to finally get to show off all the parts of Love Sick to the crowd. She started playing with the turntables, creating beats on the spot idly. A group of people had already accumulated early before the show began, however, when Vinyl Scratch started playing around on the turntables, the small group cheered her on in response. When she finished, Vinyl Scratch laughed and waved at the group before walking backstage to wait for the show to begin as the time was near. Normally, you’d wait for the show to start in a room backstage and get a call to come out. Vinyl Scratch, however, was too nervous to even sit down. She stood just off the side of the stage behind the curtain and watched the crowd build. What was once just a small group of people at the edge of the stage had soon grown larger and larger, people beginning to fill up to the corners of the room and become louder with incoherent chit-chat. This would be the largest crowd she has ever had the chance to perform in front of to date. The lights cut and the room went completely dark. With apprehension, Vinyl Scratch walked out under a single spotlight and walked up to the turntables. The crowd went crazy, cheering for her all at once, before a chant of “PON3, PON3, PON3” filled the hall. Vinyl Scratch waved before she spoke into the microphone. She had to wait a moment for the crowd to die down just enough so she could speak over them. “Thank you guys so much… Normally, I wouldn’t give this kind of an introduction but this is a special night. We’re here to pay our respects to one of the best musicians that ever lived. I had the opportunity to play alongside of him and know him personally. I had the opportunity to fall in love with him…” She stopped as the crowd cheered once more at that statement. She then continued. “Normally, I play loud music, heavy bass, fast beats, and adrenaline filled mixes. However, today, I want to play some stuff by DJ Soul. One set of songs in particular that has never been heard before today. A mix that was only partially finished before his unfortunate passing…” A slow beat rolled in that would mark the beginning of the set of songs known as Love Sick. The familiar beats filled the room and left the crowd feeling like they were at a true DJ Soul show. Many danced and moved to the beat with true emotion. As the songs went by, the new songs that were never before heard began, mixing into the previous parts. The songs continued, slow and harmonious, leaving the crowd in a familiar trance of bliss. It continued on until finally it cut out, slowly and beautifully ended with Vinyl Scratch standing there. The emotion could be felt in the air, the loss of a great person set in once again. However, instead of sorrow, the crowd felt peace. They missed him, but the crowd was happy to experience what they just did. The moment of silence after the music ended was picturesque in itself. Vinyl Scratch then slowly let a heavy bass seep into the silence. She leaned into the mic to speak. “Again, I love you Soul and I am glad you’re here watching… It’s time to get crazy in here!” The bass broke into a heavy and speedy beat, lights flashing and forced adrenaline into the crowd. People instantly started jumping with the music, both Soul and Vinyl Scratch came from different musical backgrounds yet they were like yin and yang. They went together perfectly. The music was non-stop and hit hard, just like DJ PON3 was known for. Time went by and the show would soon come to a close. As it did, the crowd roared as it proved to live up to the hype of the show it was said it was going to be. Vinyl Scratch took her glasses off this time. She wanted everyone to see the emotions she felt. Tears ran down her face as she held a smile. All she could do was look up, as if to look up at Soul as he watched. As was the scene at every show, people lingered around the music hall. Vinyl Scratch stood at the exit, meeting fans and signing autographs as she usually did. Being that it was such an emotional night, people came up to her hugging her, some even with tears of their own. The show was beautiful and anyone who had missed it, missed something magical. Amongst all the people Vinyl Scratch had met after the show, there was one in particular that stood out to her. A young, white filly with purple and pink mane. The young filly looked up at Vinyl Scratch and spoke with elation, “I’m so excited to meet you! I’m your biggest fan!” Vinyl Scratch smiled and responded, “I’m glad to hear that!” She was especially flattered because she remembers when she was in a similar situation with DJ Soul. “I’ve been to a lot of your shows and I want to be a well known musician like you! Although, I’m more into singing than anything!” Vinyl Scratch placed a hoof on the fillies shoulder before she spoke, “I’d certainly love to hear you sing sometime.” > Chapter 6 > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Authors Notes So I have finally finished Love Sick. Life has kept me pretty preoccupied and I haven’t had the chance to finish it until late. I actually almost forgot about it! Well, it’s long overdue but for those who followed it, I hope you enjoyed it! First I would like to let people in on the secret of the inspiration of this story. There is a series of songs called Luv (Sic) by Nujabes. Nujabes was my DJ Soul and Luv Sic is a 5 part song series in which each chapter represents each part of the series. (Chapter 3 is about Part 3, etc) Nujabes actually created the series up until part three where he passed away in February of 2010. At the time of writing this story, only 5 parts were finished though a new part came out after I had already written part 4. Regardless, the entire song that was the inspiration can be heard in a link below. I even listened to the song as I wrote this, as if DJ Soul was the one mixing the songs as I wrote about it. Maybe you should listen while you read this, it might give you a better representation of what I wanted this to be. EXOLIF aka Glove, was my main proofreader for this story and he helped me tremendously. I have to thank him first for taking from his free time to help a stranger at the time. I’m glad to have made a new friend as well. Also I want to thank those who mentioned my story at Bronycon 2012 and helped me gain a bit of exposure and said that my story was a “Hidden gem”. Also, thanks to Daniel Murphy for being my best friend and supporting the story. I want to thank Kyrinox, even if we don’t talk anymore, he did follow the story and gave me some good pointers on how to better it. I also want to thank Drgnwolf who did come from the Struggling Authors group to help me get my final two chapters in order so that I could bring them to you guys. He did a great job and I’m very thankful as he helped let me put in the final piece of this story. Finally, I want to thank all those who followed this story, gave it a thumbs up, and all around enjoyed reading it. Thank you for reading all of this as well! Please, support me! I have a facebook page where I post my non-pony stuff as I aspire to be a scriptwriter. My pony stuff will be posted there as well, no worries. Please, go like the page and help the page grow!
