A prank gone awkward

Cotton Candy has a good prank for her prank partner... But when she decides to do it on him, it turns out pretty weird.

Cotton Candy always thought that Prank Partners pranked together. A team, ya know? But when Prism tells her Prank Partners always prank each other harmlessly, the mare has a bright idea of a prank. And with her mad acting skills, he'd totally fall for it.
She spends the entire afternoon preparing it, knowing it was going to be hilarious. Well, hilarious at 80%... 60%... 4- NO. It was going to be hilarious at 100%. She was (pratically?) sure of it. It was a totally harmless joke. What would go wrong?

Nothing, it just went weird.

Cotton Candy was outside that day. It was pretty sunny. A warm breeze was making her mane wave a bit. She was in a park, with fillies and colts playing together not far away from where she was: in a tree. She was napping, snoring a bit. A dark blue face approached hers, opened its mouth and...

"BAH!"

Poor Cotton Candy jumped and almost fell on her face against the ground, but the dark blue pegasus held her. He was maybe a prankster, he didn't want any accidents to happen.

"Prism!", gasped Cotton. "I thought we were gonna prank together!"

"Don't you look cute like that", he said at her pouting face. "You may be my prank partner, but partners can prank each other!"

"They can, huh?", she smiled. "Fine."

Cotton Candy jumped off her tree and waved at her prank partner on his cloud.

"Well, see ya later, alligator!"

"In a while, crocodile."

"I can't believe we still didn't get over that", she gigglesnorted.

"Yeah. Me neither."

Cotton and Prism knew each other for a while now. When they were still little, they discovered this strange way to say goodbye. It was Pinkie who told them when she said goodbye to Gummy that way (she was just going shopping). And since then, they started saying goodbye that way all the time, just for the laughs. But seems that that little joke lasted for a few years now.

Cotton had the perfect prank in mind! Something he would totally believe in. He's just so nuts sometimes, she was sure he was going to fall for it! She wasn't sure of the consequences, but nothing bad could happen. Prism Bolt said he always wanted an armor... For the prank, a gift had to go with it. She took out a colored dough bag.

"I can't afford an armor... Plus, it would be weird."

She modeled her PPBFFM, her Prank Partner Best Friend Forever (Maybe?). His mane was just so annoying to do! But with her super modeling skills, she finally finished. Now, for the armor. Starburst gave her pictures of her dad in an armor. All the mares thought he was sexy in it. Especially without his weird helmet. She modeled a golden armor over Prism Bolt. Since it was dough, and she was bad at baking, she asked her mother to put it in the oven for her.

"Sure!", she answered, without doubting anything.

Cotton laughed sadistically alone in her room. Someone seeing her like that would probably walk away and give her weird looks, but she had there a great prank. She rehearsed her acting skills in the mirror. The "cute-without-knowing-it" look, the "flirtyflirtyblushieblushie" look, other faces, even scary ones. Gummy, on her bed was looking at her, his two eyes derping away.

"Don't I look totally scary on this one?!", she shoved a picture of her making a funny face in the alligator's face.

Gummy didn't react. So, "Boop", Cotton Candy poked gently his chest and the pet fell on his back miserably. She chuckled at the poor pathetic pet.

"I knew I was terrifying.", she smiled and laid down next to him, when a high-pitched voice called her:

"IT'S BAKED!"

Cotton Candy dashed to the huge kitchen, the biggest room of the entire house. There it was, her awesome gift for Prism Bolt. She just wanted to eat it, as it was made if dough and sugar, but she controlled herself: it would totally ruin the prank! She picked it up carefully and quickly put it on a plate. It was still super hot. She huffed on her hooves. She may like the sunrays on her skin and mane, but she didn't like having burnt hooves.

When she came back to her room, she chased Gummy away. Everything would be messed up if he took but one bite at her magnificent gift! She put it next to the open window and spent the rest of the afternoon supervising it. Hours passed. Her tummy was grumbling, but she resisted taking a bite. She remembered she had brownies hidden under her pillow. She took out one and nommed it, still watching the gift. She was chasing away hungry birds and ponies all afternoon, it's surely cooled down. And frosting her mother added was probably hard. The dough wouldn't be edible now, after all that time it was 'cooling down'.

She gently slid the gift in her yellow one-side saddlebag. She smiled, excited. Why was she even excited...? It was just a prank that wouldn't mean anything. Or maybe... nah. He would fall for it, be shocked, walk back, then she'd tell him the truth then they'd both laugh. That was the plan, and it should work. Cotton felt nervous all of a sudden. Why was she even nervous??? She face-walled a few times to calm down. She sighed and checked her gift. Prism and Cotton always met at that time of the evening in the park. Finally, the dark blue Pegasus landed nearby. She almost didn't see him if he didn't have those bright green eyes.

"Yo, Candy."

Here came the funny part. She bit the inside of her cheeks to not giggle.

"Listen, Bolt, it's been like... a few years we've known each other... And I know it would be silly you didn't tell me if you felt the same way, but... but........"

Something blocked her. It wasn't laughter, no. But she decided to convince herself it was. Just. Laughter.

"I kinda... loveyouand...", she whispered and took out her gift. "I made this for you, since I can't afford a real armor. Welp, all this was to ask you... Will you be my boyfriend? ... Please?"

Prism Bolt looked at her with wide open eyes, speechless. She asked herself if it was the good moment to tell him the truth. But something told her, in her heart, that she really wanted to see his reaction before saying anything. Then he smiled widely and gave Cotton Candy a warm hug an a kiss on the cheek.

"OF COURSE I will, Candy!"

"... Wait, what?"

Cotton Candy blinked in surprise. He... wanted to date her? But that couldn't be right. He wasn't supposed to act like this. Even a bit shocked, Candy felt a bit of joy. He liked her! Wait, wait: it was bad. It was really bad. Usually taking jokes seriously was good, but... how could he even like her?

"That's great, but...", she started.

"... But what? Cotton, you just asked me out. Trust me, you're totally cool enough to be my girlfriend!"

"Yes, I hope I am, but..."

Ugh, she couldn't say it. Just four little words! It-was-a-joke. She shook her head and finally looked up to Prism.

"You're a really cool guy and I'm happy you like me, but... it was just a joke."

She gulped as sweat dripped down her cheeks. Prism was speechless. He blinked once or twice and looked down, his voice was a bit trembling. He was really disappointed. Oh, no no no no no, Prism, don't cry. Candy thought. Cause... C-cause if you c-cry... I'll cry-y-y... She didn't realize it soon enough, but she was actually really crying. She hid her tears with her hair.

"Well... Okay... Nice one, Candy. Really. I really fell for it."

She could feel an upset tone in his voice now. Especially at the end. She tried to say, or to at least mumble him to not go away or anything, but couldn't say a word. Her hair was all wet because of her tears, and none of them could hide their sadness. Prism Bolt sighed and flew away. Candy looked down. What did she just do??? Oh right. She lost her best friend. She smashed the "gift" she made to pieces before walking back home.

"Hmmpffgg...", mumbled the light blue mare in her sleep.

"Candy, it's noon already!", squeaked a voice.

Cotton Candy turned over to glare at her two younger sister twins, Sugar Rush and Cloudy Skies. She waved annoyedly a hoof at their faces, mumbling some more.

"I need sleeeeeep... I couldn't fell asleep early enough. Shoo!"

"Sheesh, fine.", groaned Sugar.

"Geez, fine.", added Cloudy.

The two fillies trotted out the door, leaving their drooly, sleepy sister. Her mane was really a mess. She buried her face into her pillow. She felt really bad for what she did to Prism. Especially that, well, she really didn't mind dating him!

"... Wait, what?"

Candy thought about it again. Yeah. She didn't mind dating him. Yeah, she actually would like dating him. It would be nice. Or even great. Oh well, she WANTED to date him! Candy smiled at that thought. She stood up and jumped on her bed.

"I actually liiike him! Woo! Yay! Hurray! Yippee!"

She fell on her back and sighed. Well, everything was going to work out. Only... if she could talk to him again. She frowned at that thought. She closed her eyes again, hoping to sleep, but her heart jumped, like to make her move. She had to talk to Prism! She jumped off her bed, brushed her mane quickly, and brushed her teeth. She instantly regretted the moment she smashed the gift to pieces... But what was done was done. She galloped as fast as she could through the kitchen, kissed her parents on the way. There was no time to waste! She borrowed the hot air balloon.

"Ugh, no time to call mom to teach me how to use this thing!"

She turned on the fire and up she went. She was scared something would happen... But nothing did. It was probably magic. But no time to think about it. Then she slapped her face: clouds! She needed an unicorn to walk on clouds! Why didn't she think about it earlier?! Now, um... how to turn the flames off... Sweat dripped down her head and she blew out on the flames, but it only grew bigger. She really started to panic.

"Um... uuhhhh...!!"

The flame reached the balloon! She started to cry for help, but she was pretty far from earth. The ropes burned and the platform she was on dropped. She shrieked and held on to the still flying balloon. But the flames reached her hooves, and she fell.

"EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE-...!", she shouted before opening her eyes again.

She felt muscled arms wrapped around her. She looked at the pony who was holding her and saw a sweaty, huffing Prism Bolt. She blushed deeply when she saw him. The blue pegasus landed right in the park where she played her prank, which reminded her of why she came in the first place.

"Thanks for saving me Prism.", she said, still blushing.

"Yeah. Whatever.", he replied monotonously.

"Listen, Bolt, I just wan-"

"No, it's fine Candy. I get it. It was a prank and you thought it was funny or something..."

"No, wait, Prism, actuall-"

"It's fine you don't love me, 'Dy. I'll just move on."

Now she just smiled. Did he just use the word "love"? She quickly gave him a kiss on his cheek.

"Candy! You're not really helping me move on, you know!", he groaned and pushed her away with his wing.

"Priiiiiiiism! I want to kiss you!", she said, puckering up.

"Candy, you're weird... And that's kinda mea-"

He didn't finish his sentence. Candy didn't want to hear the rest of it anyway. It was probably stupid. She just kissed him right on the lips. Both blushed intensively at the sudden contact. Candy passed her hoof on his neck to push in the kiss. It was her first, but she seemed to do it right. Finally, she opened her golden eyes again and broke the kiss.

"Hm...", they both muttered. That was awkward.

"All that to say that, well... Will you be my boyfriend?", she asked him again, smiling.

"Tsssk, me go out with an earth pony like you?", he snickered.

She pouted at his reply. Why did he say that all of a sudden?

"Don't you get it? All that was a prank too. I'd never have a crush on my Prank Partner."

"Yeah... Me neither... Haha, that's... silly...", her throat felt dry.

"C'mon, 'Dy I was kidding!", he smiled. "I'd totally be your boyfriend."

She smiled. He really gave her a fright. She nuzzled him and kissed him everywhere on his face.

"Woah, calm down with the kisses", he giggled. "Actually, kiss on~"

They both laughed together. Ah, what a great day! And now they had to announce it to everypony. Or keep it a secret until they get married. They'll just let destiny choose. Cause destiny makes the right choices, right? The two lovers walked back home, the stallion's wing warmly wrapping over the mare's back.
