entry 49

Has it really been a month since the return of my beloved sister? It feels as if the events leading up to her return had only transpired not a moment ago...

Today's lunch consisted of a rather mild daisy and dandelion sandwich along with a small slice of cake. I know, I know, I'm overindulging, but considering that I have had to deal with the indiscriminate badgerings of the nobles because of their damaged holdings as well as the ire of the mayor of Manehatten (the old mare simply does not know the meaning of the word quit!), I decided to treat myself.

Although perhaps I should have told Luna before I procured a slice from her secret stash of chocolate fudge marble cake. Millennia old defense matricies does not a good protection make, Luna!

(Perhaps this will teach her to study a bit more into recent progressions in spell theory and not steal out my own secret stash whilst I am busy with ambassadors!)

Note: find out how she broke into my stash.

Twilight's most recent friendship report, which I received yesterday evening, has once again reaffirmed my decision to give her a home in ponyville. I am happy to say that Twilight has finally learned to take some pride in her abilities as a unicorn! Although, from what I have heard from my correspondence from the mayor of ponyville in the most recent weekly census (note:move next census to Canterlot gardens due to damages in the meeting hall), the lesson was not learned under the best of circumstances, especially for the poor mare who had been run out of town, but she assured me that all parties involved are fine despite how bad the turnout had been at first glance.

On more pressing matters, despite how much the nobles may exaggerate about the cost of the destruction of the properties on their lands, I cannot deny that there has been a recent rise in vandalism in this country.

Unfortunately, there is nothing I can do, despite knowing the cause of the recent rise in property destruction. And it may be sooner rather than later where I will have to unveil the causes of it.

My ability to keep the after-effects of the meteor shower that took place after the release of my sister hidden has been slipping, as of late. Although, despite time and time again of reminding myself not to call it a meteor shower since the objects in question that fell were not meteors, I find myself doing such anyway.

I even have one such object not two hoof-lengths away, hidden in a drawer, waiting to be touched by a pony, anypony who happens to come across it...

I still have too little information on these objects to make a judgement on them, despite perhaps being the pony with the most information on them at present.

If only I understood the purpose of these cards that rained down from above, then the decision would be much easier...

From what my recent reports have told me, the few docile card monsters (note: I need to find a better name for them. They are intelligent beings after all. Perhaps ask Luna or even Twilight? No, not twilight, she has enough already...) that have been helping with the recent harvest have made good friends with the small community living there, giving me hope that the others that have been wandering around may do so as well. Although, the ones that befriended the farmers certainly had the benefit of having the appearance of childish plants, while the others have not had that specific advantage, from what sightings have told me.

The expedition team I had sent to find the crystal empire also sent message of a stone golem, which I am positive is another of those card monsters, that had helped them pass through a blizzard that had suddenly brewed in the area, although it left soon afterwards, which troubles me as to why. Surely, if it had wanted to help ponies, why not stay to continue to protect them? Perhaps the team will find them again...

The scout teams I had sent to monitor the ones I have deemed draconic wanderers due their appearance and their movement patterns, have returned bearing the same news as always: they enter a sparely crowded town, they pillage as they will, and then simply leave. Nopony has died to these particular draconic wanderers, although they seem to respond to aggression if approached with such. Currently, I am simply having my scouts prevents as much property damage as possible and to keep civilians from harm until I can determine a method to contain these brutes, but current research into them has proved minimal at best.

However, it appears as though there is hope to be had. The most dangerous group, a group that seems dedicated to solely attempting and succeeding in killing my little ponies, has been pushed back in manehatten by a rival group, which was the cause of my meeting with the mayor of the city earlier today and some of yesterday evening. Although these monsters seem to be immune to our magic, when another monster summoned from these cards battles them, they can be slain. Although, perhaps a better term would be reverted to their original state, as when these monsters are slain, a card such as the one in the drawer next to me is dropped, with the same strange writing written on the top and a series of numbers on the bottom.

Note: translation of the language has been going slow, although with the addition of the latest cards to the vault, perhaps there will be more progress.

Despite the damage report I received this morning, I can safely say that there is now a way to combat those that threaten my little ponies, as when a guard that haphazardly went to pick up a card instead of using magic to safely store it, the monster depicted on it came to life once more.

The monster in question was one of the few that had been slain by those that tried to destroy the city and its inhabitants, so I am not sure whether the loyalty shown by the monster to the guard is due to a kind of magical contract enacted upon picking it up or due to previous allegiances, but it now follows said guard around, defending him.

The monster is currently staying in a room close by so I can keep an eye on him, but his? Its? Docility is proving such surveillance unnecessary.

Along with his arrival came a chance to study his form. His form of a bipedal creature covered in armor was something that some of the monsters basin common, and upon closer examination, heralded several key similarities between these variants and ponies, specifically in the brain and key bodily functions.

But perhaps the most telling feature of all was the fact it bore a name.

The guard claimed, upon picking up the card, that he could read the text upon it before it disappeared and created the being in the room a few doors over.

This Celtic Guardian hosts many secrets, and seems unwilling or unable to tell them. Perhaps in time...

There is still much I do not know, but I do hope a peaceful resolution will happen soon enough. If the damages escalate from simply property damage to lives, I am unsure if I can place a solid hoof down when the time comes.

No, it is not that I am unsure. It is that I am absolutely sure I will be able to. I am simply unsure if I will be able to cope with the idea that I may end them and had not given them a chance...

The evening is soon to arrive. Luna will soon be wondering what is taking me so long to come down. Always was the early riser...

Chapter 2: The Beginning

Perhaps it was due to the all night study session she had done on proper envoy etiquette because Celestia had accidentally sent her one of her diplomacy reports with a note scribbled in the margins to come up with a strategy to appease every single diplomat that had sent in a complaint.

Or, perhaps it was due to the fact that she had been so sleep deprived that she had spilled ink onto the final report she had made, and thus rendered all her hard, yet pointless, work moot.

Or maybe it was because the sun was too damn bucking bright today.

While Twilight loved the sun and was thankful that Celestia raised it every morning and lowered it every night, she wasn’t what most ponies would call an outdoors mare. It wasn’t helping that she had been up all night and her now red and baggy eyes were incredibly sensitive to light.

At least her task was nearly over. She had accidentally chewed out the stallion that ran quills and sofas for giving her one more quill than she had bought, which then led to her getting two for free instead of one, plus a bonus parchment.

She felt guilty about it, but more quills and paper meant more lists! She couldn’t really feel all that guilty at having more listing power.

Twilight decided perhaps it was time to actually start the day off on a better note and started to hum a tune she heard pinkie singing some time ago.

She couldn’t really recall why, but she felt as though she had heard the song before. The tune stuck in her head after hearing it once and she knew she could finish off the tune despite only having heard the first fourteen notes, so she had the impression she had heard it before. But, as she wracked through her memories, she found that she was drawing a blank.

Twilight would say she had an astounding long term memory. Short term, not so much, but long term was definitely one of her strengths. So the fact that she could not remember where she had heard it was bothering her immensely.

Where had she heard it? It had to have been a while ago, considering she couldn’t seem to recall the words, but it couldn’t have been so long ago that she would have forgotten all of it.

Where had it been? Where?

“Where where where where where?” She muttered to herself. “Maybe I should just ask Pinkie? Or maybe I-”

The feeling of running into a brick wall was something that Twilight hadn’t felt too often, as she usually unconsciously teleported around any obstructions, but at that particular moment, she had become acquainted with the feeling once more and landed flat on her flank, pegasi swimming in the clouds above her head.

She slowly rose to full height, shaking her head to clear it so she could see exactly what she had walked into.

At first, she found herself bewildered at the sight of a solid black barrier in front of her, but upon taking a closer look, she realized that the ‘wall’ was attached to a pair of hooves. That further confused her, as how could a wall walk around on hooves? Then the wall shifted itself and she found herself staring at two large, dark red irises.

A moment of silence followed, allowing Twilight to process all the information.

“Oh, um, sorry about that... That was my mistake. I really should have been watching where I was going…”

She side-stepped out of his way, sheepishly rubbing the back of her head.

Now that she wasn’t so close to the stallion, she could see that what she had mistaken as a wall earlier had actually been a pitch black poncho, covering most of his form. Behind him were two other, much smaller figures, also wearing the same pitch black poncho as the pony in front of her. It was slightly intriguing to her that ponies would be wearing such attire, considering it was going to be a perfectly sunny day all day today, but she supposed she wouldn’t judge other ponies by their choice in fashion apparel.

The pony she had bumped into nodded her way, the hood of his cloak fluttering from the action, before continuing to move onwards.

Twilight was also about to continue on her way, but then it struck her that she had never seen those ponies in town before. Well, maybe she had, considering it was hard to tell because of what they were wearing, but she was almost certain she hadn’t. Taking into consideration that the road she was on led directly out of ponyville, she decided to take the chance that they were, in fact, new ponies.

And, as both a good citizen and as a researcher in the field of the magic of friendship, she decided that it was a good idea to try to introduce herself to the party and perhaps try to show them around.

“Wait!” She rushed after the group, sliding to a halt right in front of them. “Sorry again, but I just noticed that you seem to be new here. Do you want some help with getting around? Ponyville’s a pretty small place, but you can get lost really easily if you don’t know your way around. I know on my first day here-”

“Buzz off, we don’t need your help.” One of the ponies that had been following the large one walked forward and glared at her, ice blue eyes locking with her own lavender ones. “Come on, guys, we don’t have time for this.”

The pony she had originally been talking to opened his mouth to speak, but instead the other pony that had formerly been next to him trotted up to the front and swatted him in the back of the head.

“Owww!” The blue eyed one angrily rubbed the back of his head. “Damn it, light, what was that for?!”

“You moron! She was just trying to help!” The other pony turned toward her, revealing her own, light red feminine eyes. “Sorry about my brother, he can be a bit… stubborn, at times. I’m called light, by the way. The idiot's Flare.”

She extended a hoof in greeting, but the other pony swatted her hoof away with his own hot red one.

“What in the shadow realm did you do that for?!”

“We are not going to take her help. We’re late enough as it is.”

The red-eyed mare rolled her eyes. “Oh sure, now you care that we’re late. Where was this version of you earlier, hmm? Stuffed in a corner somewhere while you were busy flirting with every mare you saw?”

“I wasn’t-!”

“Yes you were. Don’t even try to talk your way out of it.”

“But I wasn’t the one stuffing her face with pie and going around accepting help from obvious spies!”

“... Can you get any dumber?”

Flare huffed in indignation. “I’m just trying to keep us safe, and here you are going around all willy nilly accepting every single proposal you see!”

“... Listen to yourself. Spies. Here.” She tapped her foot on the ground. “Anywhere even! Why would anypony even bother sending spies for us!”

“You know why!”

“No! I don’t know why!” She stared at him intently. “Stop being a moron Flare!”

“No, you stop being Naive!”

“Idiot!”

“Ignoramus!”

“Wow, I didn’t think you were smart enough to know big words like that!”

“I didn’t know your mouth was big enough to stuff 10 whole pies like that!”

“Why you-”

“Alright you two, enough is enough.” The third of the three finally spoke up. “Unless you two feel like you want to do some errands for me again…”

The two instantly stopped yelling at each other and quickly moved back to their previous positions.

“Oh, well, that’s too bad. I was hoping that maybe you would help an old tired stallion like me out, but I suppose this life is too cruel to expect anything out of you two.” He shook his head. “So, before those two oh so rudely interrupted, you were saying…?”

Twilight, who had been staring at the scene blankly, suddenly broke out of her stupor and answered in her usual eloquent manner. “Wha…?”

“I said, as you were saying?” She could spot a smirk under the cloak he was wearing. “Is zoning out a habit of yours? If so, you must have some pretty spectacular friends if they can handle you constantly staring off into space like that.”

Twilight could feel her ears turning red. “Oh, no, it’s not a habit of mine, I just-”

“Ah, I was just joking. I wasn’t being serious.” He smiled and held out a coal black hoof. “You can call me Metal. And I believe I would be happy, if not obliged, to take you up on your offer. After all, how else am I supposed to keep an eye on possible spies?”

The tall one turned his head back to look at the two behind him, as if waiting for an answer.

“... Fine! I admit it, it does kinda sound ridiculous…” Flare stamped a hoof into the ground. “That doesn’t mean they don’t exist though!”

Twilight couldn’t help but smile herself at the admission. She found herself being reminded of a certain somepony…

“So, I would be happy to take you up on your offer, miss…?”

It was then Twilight realized she hadn’t actually given the group her name.

“Oh, it’s Twilight Sparkle! At your service!” She gave a small bow. “So, where would you like to go first, Metal?”

“Twilight Sparkle, eh?” The pony called Metal took some time to roll the name around in his mouth. “Pleased to make your acquaintance then. You wouldn’t happen to know where we could sleep the night, would you? We were travelling all night to get here on time, but as you may have heard, we kind of missed the time to meet the pony we were supposed to meet. And frankly? I am very, very tired.”

She quickly went through her options. She couldn’t possibly impose on her friends, so that was out of the question. Ponyville was a small town, so there wasn’t a hotel or inn to stay at.... She supposed she could ask Mayor mare, but that would require asking out of business hours, and she knew from her ponyville pony schedule list that today she only took any requests during breakfast time and then spent the rest of the day relaxing. Seeing as it was currently ten until eleven, that choice was struck from her mental list. That really only left one option....

“You could stay with me, if you like!” She offered. “I really don’t mind at all and I have plenty of space, so you can rest there until tomorrow.”

The tall stallion hesitated for a moment before shaking his head. “I really can’t ask you to do that-”

“No, no, like I said, it’s fine!” She interrupted him before he could finish. “I insist!”

“...Well, if you’re going to be adamant about it, I suppose we really have no choice in the matter…”

Twilight smiled. “Excellent! Follow me!”

To any normal pony, it would look like Twilight was smiling because she was happy she had done a good deed for a group of ponies. While this was partially true, there was, in fact, another reason altogether as to why she was smiling.

‘This is a perfect opportunity for research!’ She thought to herself. ‘New ponies in town mean new opportunities to observe friendships being made, which means more reports to Celestia, which means that I’ll have to make some more lists so that I’ll have all my affairs in order so that I can properly watch them, which means…’

Her thoughts continued in that particular direction until they arrived at the treehouse.

“Well, here we are!” She stood in front of the door, beaming at them. “What do you think? Great, isn’t it?”

“It certainly looks… homely.” Metal responded. “Very natural in its decour…”

“Yup! It’s perfect!” She turned around and opened the door, leading them inside. “Come on! I need to show you around…”

She made her way to the center of the room, standing in the center of the ripple pattern that made the floor as she watched the trio look around her home in what she could only assume to be curiosity.

“That is quite a lot of books you have, Miss Sparkle…”

Twilight nodded in response. “Mhmm! It is a library after all… also, you really don’t have to call me that. Twilight is fine.”

“Twilight it is then.”

She put on her best smile and waggled a hoof in a ‘come hither’ motion. “Come on, the bedroom is this way.”

Marching toward a door tucked away in an alcove to the east, she opened the second door and waited for the three to enter.

Metal ducked his head to avoid hitting the doorframe and entered, nodding to the other two to follow him. The other two quickly caught up and the group of four headed up the stairs that made up the room on the other side.

“Thank you again, Twilight. I understand that we may be troubling you with our request-”

“Oh no, like I said before, it’s no problem!” She interjected. “I’m going to be out most of the day anyway doing various things, so the place is going to be mostly empty today. The library is run on a self checkout system, so you won’t have to worry about dealing with any ponies that have to come by, and my assistant, Spike is going to be staying at a Rarity’s for the next three days for a project of hers, so there really is going to be nopony around for there to trouble. Especially if, as you said, you are just staying the night.”

“... Well, I suppose in that situation lending your house to some strange ponies for a day would work perfectly for your schedule, now wouldn’t it?”

“Too well, if you ask me…” Twilight heard one of the ponies behind her mutter. “Almost like it was planned, right?”

“Flare. We’ve been over this. She’s not a spy. Spies don’t exist. Even if they did, they wouldn’t be so damn open with us.”

“But that’s just what she wants us to think!”

“... You know what, it’s not even worth calling you a moron at this point. I’m just going to ignore everything that’s going to come out of your mouth for the next hour.”

“Light, once we leave here I’m-”

“Didn’t I tell you two to settle down already? Or maybe you actually do want to do me some favors?” The two instantly closed their mouths. “Flare, apologize to Twilight, would you kindly?”

Twilight let out a sigh. She had wanted to stop the two from bickering, but she also did not want to estrange her budding relations between them or potentially do something awkward. Twilight was glad that at least metal could prevent the two from fighting.

“... fine…” Flare moved to the front and bowed his head. “I’m... sorry... for calling you a spy even though you let us sleep here… and have been really nice to us so far...”

It felt forced and entirely too insincere for an apology to Twilight, but at least it was an apology.

“Thank you, Flare, but I can not accept that apology.” Twilight shook her head. “If you really want to apologize, then I would appreciate something that shows that you are honest instead of some empty words.”

Metal nodded at her words. “You are indeed correct, Twilight.” He redirected his gaze toward the shorter pony. “And because he is my precious underling, I have decided that after we finish our housing affairs tomorrow, he will be coming by to help you with whatever chores you may have for him.”

“What?!” Flare yelped in confused irritation. “No way I’m helping her out!”

“Well, you could chose to help her out tomorrow or I could offer you a second option… Your choice.”

Twilight could hear him gulp at that statement. “I’ll help! I’ll help!”

Metal nodded. “Perfect.”

The all finally reached the second floor of the treehouse and Twilight showed them the two beds at the higher, third floor of the building. “I only have two beds at the moment, so I hope that is fine for the three of you... I could use my magic to make a third bed if you want!”

“No, no, that is perfectly fine. Those two are used to sharing everything, so sharing a bed is nothing new to them. You don’t have to waste your magic to make another bed.” Metal pointed at his cloak. “You wouldn’t happen to have a spot where we could put these, would you?”

“That would be right over there.” She pointed to a hidden outcropping near the window with a single hook visible from their current vantage point, more lying behind it. “If you happen to need anything else, the kitchen is down that door to the left and the bathroom is on the right.”

“Thanks. That will be all.” A pair of large wings stretched out from under the cloak, flapping once and lifting him with enough force to make it all the way to the second floor. “Come on, you two.”

The other two ponies followed suit, stretching their own red tipped and blue streaked wings to fly up to the third floor.

‘So they are all pegasi… interesting.’ She made a mental note. ‘Nomadic pegasi usually make cloud houses for themselves or simply rest on clouds that are passing by for rest. Why are they not in the air? ...Perhaps they are like fluttershy and prefer the ground? Or maybe they are simply used to it? Or maybe they simply prefer experiencing what ponyville has to offer… Yeah, that’s probably it…’

She still was not completely sure about her guess though, so she mentally marked it as something to investigate at a later date.

That was when she looked at the time.

“Oh! I really have to go!” She instinctively teleported to the door. “I’ll be back later this evening if you happen to need anything!”

She marched toward the stairs and shut the door behind her as she passed through, thinking of nothing other than getting herself back on schedule.
