CHAPTER 1

It was a regular day of Shadowbolt A-Wave training. Night Arrow got up a bit earlier than CC and Skylight to get his laps in before they showed up so he can coach from the sidelines. The B-Wave Captains Fire Blitz and Treble were by the locker rooms watching as well.

“Come on, CC! Skylight is practically lapping you!” Arrow called.

“I’d like to see you keep up with freakin’ Skylight!” CC gasped while whizzing past.

Arrow smiled, he’d been training like crazy on his own time since he
knew A-Wave training sessions would consist primarily of him being on the sidelines. He was just about to jump in when he heard a familiar voice.

“Delivery foooooor Mr. Arrow!!” The Mailmare almost never came to his run-down old stadium. Arrow was surprised she could even find it with her eyes facing different directions. This place was hard enough to find in the middle of Everfree Forest with regular, focused eyes.

“Oh, hey Ms. Hooves. I have mail?” Arrow greeted.

“You sure do! Let me just get in here... and....” The grey mare’s eyes attempted to focus into her mailbag, and she pulled out a dark blue envelope. “..here ya go!” Clearly written with silver ink was ‘to: Night Arrow From: Princess Luna” in beautiful calligraphy.

‘thanks, Ms. Hooves.” Arrow said grabbing the letter with his mouth.

“Oh, please... Ms. Hooves is my father’s name! Call me Derpy!”

“Uh, I don’t think the expression works that way. . .” Arrow replied.

“Well, I gotta go!” Derpy interrupted, obliviously.

“Wait, don’t you wanna say hi to CC or Skylight?”

“Uh no not really,” Derpy replied, ‘to be honest... Skylight’s eyes kinda freak me out.” She whispered into Arrow’s ear.

“Ha, you don’t say...” Arrow smiled at the irony.

“I sure did!” Derpy replied, clearly not getting the sarcasm. “Well, I gotta go! Go, Shadowbolts!” She cheered as she flew backwards towards Ponyville.

Skylight and CC finished their 30-lap race. “I win!!” Skylight exclaimed.

“You always do. . .” CC replied.

“That was awesome!” Fire Blitz yelled trotting over toward the rest of the group,
Treble following behind.

“Hold on guys, I got a letter from Princess Luna while you were finishing up...” Arrow said, opening the envelope.

“Huh, I didn’t know Derpy made deliveries this far into Everfree Forest...” CC said.

“Derpy Hooves, the mailmare??” Skylight shuddered, “Have you seen that mare? Her eyes kinda freak me out.”

Treble and Blitz laughed at the irony. “What’s the letter say, Arrow?” CC asked.

“It’s pretty short... it just says ‘Night Arrow, Please meet me in Canterlot on your earliest opportunity. Sincerely, Princess Luna’...”

“Well, that sounds... cryptic. . .” Treble said.

“Road trip to Canterlot!” Skylight shouted.

“No no, I don’t think so. It might be official Shadowbolt stuff.” Arrow responded, turning the letter over for any more information. “I should probably go alone, just there and back real quick, you know?”

“Ha!” CC scoffed. "Since when do you take care of ‘official Shadowbolt stuff’? I bet you’re in trouble...”

As much as Arrow wanted to come back with a witty remark, CC was right. As Co-Captain, Arrow took care of training sessions, but CC had always helped Luna plan races and go through paperwork. The only thing he could think of this being about was Darkstreak. Ever since he hurt his wing a few months ago, he hadn’t come to any training sessions, and always just sat on the sidelines during races. Honestly, Arrow had been worried about him.

“Well, either way, it doesn’t say to bring anypony else. So I’m gonna shower and head over.” Arrow said, heading towards his room.

“Why are you gonna shower!?” CC shouted. “It’s not like you did anything today!”

CHAPTER 2

Night Arrow always hated visiting Canterlot. It brought back bad memories for him. Before the Shadowbolts, he hadn’t really been to Canterlot since the day Skylight had her accident in Cloudsdale. They never ended up back home, they went straight to Everfree Forest, which means that was also the day Night Arrow lost all contact with his family. Literally leaving his old life behind.

A piece of him regretted it. He missed his dad very much, and since his mom passed, it had just been the four of them. He missed his sisters, Raindrops, and Scootaloo, but he couldn’t go back now; not after all these years.

Last year, at the beginning of the Shadowbolts first competitive season, he had noticed the captain of the other team, The Wonderbolts, looked familiar. After the race, she approached Arrow, to congratulate him on a great performance.

“Hey you guys aren’t half bad out there!” She said, removing her flight goggles.

“Oh, thanks. We’re not really used to racing in front of all these people.” Arrow responded, still a little shaken from being in front of such a huge audience.

“Wait a second...” The yellow pegasus pony stepped forward, surveying Arrow up and down. “You look familiar, are you from Canterlot?”

“What??” Arrow panicked, “I’m-- no, I’m not from...” He stepped back a few steps. “I’m from, uh--”

She leaned in quickly and snatched Night Arrow’s goggles from his face. “Wait, I know those eyes... Night Arrow?”

‘Great...’ Arrow thought to himself. ‘ knew it was a bad idea to come back to Canterlot...’

“Night Arrow, it’s me! Spitfire!” the orange-maned pegasus replied. “Raindrop’s friend from flight school?”

“Raindrops??” Arrow’s heart sank into his stomach. “Buck. Is she here??” He looked around quickly. “she’s not here is she??”

“What? No. No man, calm down. Are you hiding out?” Arrow didn’t respond. Spitfire’s eyes widened from realization. “Wait, you still haven’t been around since you took off that night?”

Arrow shook his head.

“Night Arrow, you gotta go see your sisters, and your dad.” Spitfire said, empathetically.

“I can’t,” Night Arrow sighed “It’s been four years, Spitfire, I just kinda took off...”

“But Arrow, they’re gonna wanna know you’re okay...” Spitfire sat down. “Heheh, Raindrops is gonna flip when she finds out--”

“You can’t tell her!” Arrow grabbed Spitfire by the shoulders.

“Whoa, chill Night Arrow, I haven’t seen Raindrops for a couple of years myself.” Spitfire moved his hooves off her shoulders. "Since your dad retired from coaching, they all moved to Ponyville; some small town near Everfree Forest.”

“Oh...” Arrow was relieved, running into them would never be a problem if he just avoided that little town.

Whenever he flew to Canterlot, he had to fly over Ponyville, and he always remembered what Spitfire had said. Although he’d never set hoof in that town, he had picked out a house from his path up in the sky. This particular house, in his opinion, was the nicest house in all of Ponyville. In his imagination, Raindrops, Scootaloo and his father were all living happily in that house.

He even imagined he would one day build up the courage to walk through the door of that nice house, and say casually with his sarcastic charm, “Hey guys! I’m home!"

Then, even his imagination got the best of him; he knew that would inevitably turn into one heck of an awkward conversation... “Look, I’m sorry I left home and never came back again.. but how are things around here?" he would say with a smile.

Arrow laughed nervously at the idea, ad continued his hypothetical internal dialogue. “Also, sorry dad, I know you put everything you had, your entire life into training the Wonderbolts to be the best they could be, but now I’m the Co-Captain of their only real competition! I’m their only real threat. Proud of me?"

Yeah... that would definitely not roll over very well with his old man.

Soon, Canterlot’s Castle was in view, and he flew around to Princess Luna’s quarters, and landed on the Royal Lunar Balcony. He knocked on the door to Princess Luna’s Royal office.

“Enter.” She beckoned from behind the doors. He straightened his shirt, and entered.

CHAPTER 3

“Hey, I got your invitation, but looks like I’m a bit early for the party.” Arrow joked. Luna was sitting behind her giant desk.

“Hmm,” she smiled “always the joker Night Arrow. If you ever decide to stop flying, you’re always welcomed to be the royal jester.”

Arrow laughed, “Yeah, that’d be the day... So... what is this all about?”

“I have bittersweet news.” Luna said sternly.

“About . . . ?” He asked.

Luna paused, “It’s concerning Darkstreak.”

Night Arrow’s heart dropped into his stomach. He had his suspicions, but Darkstreak was the closest thing to a father he had. If anything had happened
to him, he’d lose it. Arrow cleared his throat, and took a seat in front of the her desk. “What, um... what is it?”

Luna hesitated, “I think you should hear it from him.” She turned to the side entrance of the room.

“Oh thank Celestia...” Arrow gasped as he saw the big grey pegasus enter through the doorway. Luna’s eyes narrowed. “Uh, sorry... it’s an expression.” Arrow smiled coyly.

Darkstreak was wearing the official Shadowbolt member’s only shirt. He slowly walked to the window behind Luna, as if trying to choose his words wisely.

“Darkstreak! Buddy!” Arrow broke the silence. “so, uh.. so I hear you’ve got some big news? You gonna start coming back to practices again? Or... maybe win us a race or two?”

Darkstreak finally turned to face Arrow. “You’re being promoted, Arrow.” That shut Night Arrow up pretty quickly. His face lit up with excitement, which immediately turned into confusion. “But... I’m already... Co-Captain. So, how can I be...”

“Really, Darkstreak?” Luna interrupted. “this is the way you tell him?”

“Unless...” Arrow’s train of thought continued.

“Come on, boy, put it together.” Darkstreak said, impatiently.

“Well,” Arrow said confidently, “YOU’RE definitely not quitting our team, so the only logical solution is...” he turned to Luna, “I’m the new princess of the night...?”

“Hilarious.” Luna responded dryly.

“No, Arrow... I’m sorry, kid. I’m retiring from the Shadowbolts.”

“You’re WHAT?” Arrow responded. “But-- You can’t! It’s always been the four of us! We STARTED this team!”

‘damnit, Arrow shut up.” Darkstreak responded. He’d always been very no- nonsense. If Arrow hadn’t known him for as long as he had, he’d think Darkstreak was a real jerk. “I’ve made up my mind, kid. I’m too damn old for this. It was fun, and I’ve already thanked Princess Luna for giving me the opportunity, but I wasn’t planning on being on this team for as long as I did, you all knew that.”

It was true. Back when they were first building the team, Luna knew it needed a captain. CC, although the most responsible, was too young. Night Arrow was the oldest of the three, but far too brash, and arrogant. And Skylight was... well Skylight was Skylight. CC had then remembered her old flight school coach in Canterlot had been trying to join the Wonderbolts since he was a colt, but they never let him in. So, after he was hired at the best flight school in Equestria, pupil after pupil ended up making the Wonderbolts roster. When Darkstreak’s name was brought up, Arrow and Skylight remembered having him as a coach back in the day too. He was mean and hard to work with, but the best flyers in Equestria came out of that school. Canterlot Flight School only hired the best, and Darkstreak was definitely the best.

“All these years, I’ve been captaining the team, but also, teaching you how to be a good leader, Night Arrow. I remember you from when you were in my class. You were self-centered, a show-off, egotistical, arrogant--”

“I get it.” Arrow interrupted.

“But whenever anyone messed with one of your friends, you stood up for them in a heartbeat. You had all the pieces to be a good leader, I just needed to put them in the right place. I was planning on quitting soon anyway, my wing isn’t healing as fast as it used to, and let’s face it, I’m getting old. We can’t all be immortal.” They both glanced at Luna.

“What?” Luna said, “Trust me, it’s not all it’s cracked up to be.”

Arrow sat in thought for a second, then: “So... I’m Captain of the Shadowbolts now?”

“Yup, congrats, kid.” Darkstreak said unenthusiastically.

“Wait... then... do I get to choose a Co-Captain?”

“That"s the other issue,” Luna finally jumped into the conversation. “In short, Yes. However... I think the choice is quite obvious.”

“It sure is!” Arrow said, excitedly. “I can’t wait to tell Skyli-”

“Cloud Crash.” Luna interrupted.

“Cloud Crash!?” Arrow yelled. “But-- Skylight and I already *live* at the stadium! We could take care of all the captaining stuff before and after practices! I work best with her!”

“You’re being biased, Night Arrow.” Luna stated.

“Wha--? I’m being biased?? What about you!? You barely even *know* us! All this time we’ve been a team, you’ve been to Everfree, what... twice maybe? You and CC are always up here in fancy shmancy Canterlot doing who-knows-what!”

“CC has been with me since the beginning.” Luna said. “While Darkstreak was teaching you how to coach correctly, I was teaching CC how to handle all the paperwork, set up races, manage the finances. You don’t think all of this red tape takes care of itself, do you?”

Arrow couldn’t believe his ears, “But--”

“she’s right, Night Arrow.” Darkstreak jumped in. Luna smiled. She knew if there was anyone’s opinion Arrow respected, it was Darkstreak’s. “But don’t forget, you’re captain now, which makes this your decision.”

Luna’s smile turned into a scowl. Darkstreak continued, “Even if everyone else thinks it’s a bad decision, it’s still your decision. Now, get out of here. Come back tomorrow morning with who you’ve chosen.”

Night Arrow politely got up and walked towards the balcony window. “Oh, and Night Arrow,” Luna stopped him. “just remember, there is definitely a right and wrong choice here. I just hope you make the right one.” Arrow grimaced, and flew back home.

CHAPTER 4

Arrow landed back at Everfree Stadium, clearly a bit distraught. “Arrow’s back!” Skylight yelled from the threshold of her locker room. CC came trotting out and they both approached him.

“So?” CC asked. “What happened?”

Arrow looked at both of their expecting faces. “I... um. Well, there’s some bad news, and some good news.”

“Ooh! What’s the good news!?” Skylight bounced excitedly.

“No wait, what’s the bad news first?” CC asked assertively. “You always get the bad news first, so the good news cheers you up afterwards, come on, Skylight that’s common knowledge.”

Arrow knew CC would get to the same conclusion about the potential promotion once the news started spilling out. “Well.” Arrow started. “You see... Darkstreak was there, and...”

“Yay! Darkstreak’s coming back to practices!?” Skylight cheered, jumping up and down.

“Is he alright?” CC asked.

“No! What--? I mean, yes! Yes to CC, no to Skylight. He’s still not coming back, but he’s okay.”

“Aww...” Skylight sat down.

“Arrow, why are you acting so conspicuously? Is everything alright?” CC asked.

“Look guys, there’s kind of a situation that I don’t really know how to handle at the moment... and--”

Suddenly the trees rustled towards the entrance of the stadium. The three ponies turned around and saw a large, wooden cart being pulled by a light blue unicorn mare.

“Trixie!!” Skylight yipped excitedly, and quickly flew over to her.

“Hello, Skylight.” Trixie greeted, as warmly as her condescending voice allowed her to.

“Hiya Trixie!! Where are you coming from??” Skylight helped her out
of her reigns.

“Fillydelphia, The Great and Powerful Trixie had a few shows there last night. But since Trixie was near the Everfree Forest, Trixie wanted to visit... her main squeeze.” She nuzzled Arrow’s face.

“Hey Trix".” Arrow smiled, and kissed her on the cheek.

“Oh, Cloud Crash is here too? Are you having a practice? Trixie did not mean to interrupt.”

“Hmm? Me?” said CC, “No, we had a practice this morning, but Arrow was beckoned to Princess Luna’s office, now he apparently has good and bad news that he was just about to tell us.”

“Oh! Well what is it?” Trixie asked. The three mares were now staring expectingly at Night Arrow.

“Uhh... --oh, that! Well... um, actually...” Arrow wasn’t quite ready to make a decision, and he knew telling the rest of the team would end in a fight. Since Trixie was always so busy with her traveling show, he didn’t want to spend what little time he had with her trying to deal with upset ponies. “It’s uh... It can wait!” Arrow said.

“Seriously?” CC said, now annoyed.

“Okay!” Skylight said, cheerily and she trotted happily back to her locker room.

Arrow turned to Trixie “Um, Trixie! I’m hungry! Are you hungry? You look hungry! Let’s go get some food!”

Confused, she responded “Trixie is pretty famished--”

“Good! I know you’re on a schedule! So, let’s go get some food real quick, then we’ll talk all about my decision when I get back.” He smiled nervously.

“Your... decision?” CC asked.

“I mean, my news-- uh, THE news. The news from Princess Luna.” Arrow smiled awkwardly. After a long, equally as awkward silence, “Ooookay, see you mares later!” Arrow and Trixie walked out of the stadium towards Ponyville.

CHAPTER 5

“Ugh... Ponyville? Trixie HATES--”

“Ahem?” Arrow interrupted.

“Oh, I mean... I hate Ponyville.” Trixie responded.

Arrow couldn’t stand when Trixie referred to herself in the third-pony. It was a habit she used on stage and around other ponies, but he asked her to speak normally at least when it was just the two of them.

“I know, trust me. But we’re not actually going into town, I know a little cafe just outside the forest. It’s right between Ponyville and Everfree.” Arrow explained, “I avoid going too far into town anyway, the last ponies I would want to meet up with is any of my family, and I hear they live there now. But it’s the only decent place around here that serves food. Unless you just want the berries and fruit that grows in Everfree.”

“Ew, no, I suppose not.” Trixie replied.

They ended up at the small cafe Arrow had been going to since he first ran away from Canterlot. It was the only real contact with the outside world he had in the years before the Shadowbolts. The waitress knew him by name. Trixie wasn’t a fan of that.

As they sat and ate, he explained his situation to Trixie. “. . . so, now I have to get back there tomorrow morning with whoever I chose.”

“Arrow! I’m so proud of you!” She hugged him.

“Huh?” her response confused him.

“Night Arrow! You’re the Captain of the Shadowbolts!” Her hug tightened.

“Hmm, I guess I am, aren’t I?” He had been so caught up in his dilemma, he had forgotten the good news. He smiled, and returned her embrace.

“So, how does it feel Mr. Captain?” Trixie flirted, holding her drink.

“Meh, the same, really. I’ve been running things for a few months now. Darkstreak’s been MIA since... well, since before I even met you, haha...” Arrow responded.

“Well, has anything changed? Do you have to do anything differently?”
Trixie asked.

“I don’t know. I guess I’ll have to ask Luna, or CC--” Arrow stopped himself.

“She really does know a lot about the official stuff, doesn’t she?” Trixie drank her tea.

“Well-- yeah, but... Skylight’s way faster, and *always* at the stadium. CC’s missed a few practices.”

“Well, it’s not like Skylight has much else going on.” Trixie mused, “I mean, I love the mare, but let’s face it, Arrow, Skylight’s... well, Skylight is Skylight.”

“What does that even mean?” Arrow snapped. “It’s been us against the world since day one! Why doesn’t anypony want to give her a chance? She’s smarter than you all think! She’s just... active! She’s the fastest of us all, and she’s the most dedicated, and spirited mare on the team! She goes to every single B-Wave practice, and race!”

Trixie let him vent, then after a pause. “Night Arrow, honey.” Trixie broke the tension, ‘don’t you think you might be acting a bit... biased?”

“Oh, Trix’ not you too. . .” He slumped into his seat, his face landing on the table.

“I’m just saying, Arrow, I don’t even know Cloud Crash very well, and it just seems like, she’s a better fit.”

Night Arrow lifted his face. “I’m gonna go pay the bill...” he got up, clearly frustrated, and headed inside the cafe.

“Oh, Night Arrow...” Trixie sighed, still sipping her tea.

On the walk back through the forest, Arrow’s mind raced back and forth. He knew he would have to tell them eventually, and probably make a decision immediately. He only had a few hours until Luna and Darkstreak expected him back in Canterlot.

When they arrived back at the stadium, Fire Blitz and Treble were rounding up the rest of the B-Wave to start their practice. Skylight was under a tree eating berries. Cloud Crash was flipping through a three-ring binder.

Arrow sighed. “Go tell them.” Trixie said, ‘they’re both grown mares. They’ll help you figure it out.” Arrow nodded, and walked towards the two A-Wave mares.

“Hey ladies.” He called.

“Hey Arrow!” Skylight yelled.

“Hello, Night Arrow.” CC said, not looking up from her folder.

“Look, I have some news, that affects the three of us, a lot.” They both got up, and walked over to Arrow and Trixie. “I met with Luna and Darkstreak this morning, and... Darkstreak’s retiring.”

*GASP* Skylight stepped back.

“Really??” CC said.

“Yeah,” Arrow began, “which means--”

“Which means, you’re captain!” CC smiled, “and that also means, that, as captain, it’s your responsibility to fill the co-captain position with an existing A-Wave member!” CC began to get excited. “...which means--” CC turned to Skylight, then, to Arrow’s immediate dismay, they both yelled at the same time:

“I’m gonna be the new Co-Captain!!”

CHAPTER 6

“You!?” CC stepped back. “Why would Night Arrow choose you!? You do know how much responsibility it takes to keep things going, right?”

“I’m super responsible!” Skylight countered, “Why would Arrow pick you? Was there a slow-contest that I didn’t know about?” She stuck out her tongue.

“See!? Right there! You saw that, right Night Arrow? You don’t want Equestria’s most immature mare representing our team, do you!?”

“Immature!? I’ll show you IMMATURE!!” Skylight tackled CC to the ground. They began rolling around, biting ears and shouting. The B-Wave came rushing over.

“Yeah,” Arrow said to Trixie, sarcastically, “that went exactly as planned.”

Fire Blitz pulled the bruised up Skylight away, while Treble was holding CC back.

“Arroooow!” Skylight whined, “If you pick CC to be the co-captain, then I"ll be the only not-important pony on the team!!”

“HA!” CC scoffed, “Shows how much you know! Everypony knows that Equestrian Racing Policy clearly states that in order to compete professionally in any wave’s circuit, you need a MINIMUM of four winged ponies on your team!”

Arrow didn’t know that either, but that brought up another, very big problem. Treble’s eyes lit up, while a grin appeared on Fire Blitz’s face ‘does that mean what I think it means?” Blitz asked through her smile.

“Yes it does!” CC smiled, “Arrow’s gonna have to bring at least one B-Wave member into the A-Wave!”

This was officially, a mess.

Arrow sat quietly through the commotion. Treble was just daydreaming, while Fire Blitz was staring at him with the biggest smile on her face. CC, although a little bruised up was grinning smugly, while Skylight was still scowling at her. Trixie looked sympathetically at Night Arrow. The rest of the B-Wave began gossiping loudly amongst themselves.

“I... I have to go.” Arrow snapped his goggles over his eyes, jumped to his hooves, and shot up into the sky.

“Night Arrow, wait!!” Trixie called after him, but wingless, she remained grounded. The wind Arrow’s wings left behind upon such an intense take-off blew back everypony’s mane. Squinting through the wind, Trixie took a few steps in the direction he flew, but he was pretty far by the time she could get a clear view of him.

The other ponies stood quietly, staring at Trixie. The silence in the stadium air was deafening. Still facing away from the crowd, Trixie broke the silence.

“You should all be ashamed of yourselves.” She began, still not facing them. Skylight and CC got up, out of Treble and Blitz’s hooves. “As far as I’m concerned, none of you deserve promotions.” She turned, her eyes like daggers. They all looked down.

“Literally fighting? Look at both of you!” Trixie walked back towards them. “If either of you becomes co-captain, you think this is the way to do it?” They stayed quiet, still not looking up from the ground.

“I just...” CC started “I worked so hard with Luna this whole time. I figured all the stress was finally paying off... I guess I got a little over-eager.” She turned to Skylight, “I’m so sorry, Sky"... maybe I don’t deserve a promotion after all.”

Skylight’s eyes began to tear. “No, I’m the one who tackled you! Maybe I AM immature.” They embraced. “I’m sorry too, CC...” Skylight sniffled.

“Where do you think he went?” Fire Blitz whispered to Treble.

“I don’t know, but... I think we should cancel practice. After all this, I don’t think anypony is going to be very focused on training.”

Fire Blitz nodded, and went over to the rest of the B-Wave. “Listen up, everypony: practice is cancelled. But we’re still here tomorrow, same time as usual.”

“Cancelled?” A voice boomed from the skies above. “Now how do you expect to have a chance against the Wonderbolts if you don’t practice?” The large, gray pegasus landed with a thump on the stadium grass.

"Darkstreak?” Skylight’s eyes lit up.

“Hey Lite-Brite, long time no see. Where’s Night Arrow?” Darkstreak walked over to the three mares, keeping his goggles on.

“He flew off that way.” Trixie approached Darkstreak, motioning her horn towards the east side of the stadium.

“Flew off? Why? And what’s a pretty little unicorn pony doing in the middle of Everfree Stadium,” He turned to the B-Wave pegasus ponies ‘during what’s supposed to be a B-Wave Shadowbolts practice?”

“Uhh, you heard him everypony!” Treble jumped up, clearly intimidated, “get your goggles on, and start warming up!” The group headed towards the other side of the stadium, leaving Darkstreak, CC, Skylight and Trixie alone.

“Hmph,” Trixie scoffed, unmoved by the large pegasus; she immediately grabbed her cape and hat, “I am the GREAT and POWERFUL TRIXIE!” She said, holding her head high.

“That’s Arrow’s very special somepony.” Skylight jumped in.

“Heh,” Darkstreak grinned, “So Night Arrow found somepony just as arrogant as he is, eh?”

“Arrogant!?” Trixie gasped, appalled by the accusation. “I’ll have you know--”

“Relax, unicorn.” Darkstreak interrupted, walking away. “Trust me, from what I can already tell, you two were made for eachother.” CC and Skylight giggled. “Geeze, you two, what the hay happened? ‘Ya pet the wrong end of a Timberwolf?”

“They got into a fight.” Trixie said, still annoyed by Darkstreak.

“A fight?” Darkstreak paused, then began laughing heartily. “HAHA, I think I know what about! Alright, let’s go get Night Arrow, I think this whole decision is getting the best of him.”

Skylight and CC put their goggles on. “Nope,” Darkstreak glanced at them. “Not you two. You two go and help red and blue over there run their practice.” He turned to Trixie, “You on the other hoof, hang on tight, and explain everything on the way over.” Trixie stepped back,

“Waitwaitwait, don’t you dare lay a hoof on meeeeeeeee!” but Darkstreak quickly launched himself forward, knocking Trixie onto his back. As he soared in the same direction Arrow went, his trail tore into the daytime sky, revealing the pitch black night.

Trixie’s magic enveloped her hooves and Darkstreak’s torso. She was holding on as tightly as she could, with both her own strength, and her horn’s magic. “You said he flew off in this direction, right Tracy?”

“It’s TRIXIE! And, yes!” She yelled over the intense wind.

‘did he seem upset?” Darkstreak continued.

“He’s been stressed since I arrived at Everfree Stadium this morning!” Trixie replied.

“Then I know exactly where he’s headed.” Darkstreak took a sharp incline.

“Are we *gasp* heading towards Cloudsdale!?” Trixie yelled, feeling her anxiety kicking in.

“Yup!” Darkstreak grinned.

“But-- I’m a unicorn! I can’t stand on clouds!” Trixie felt sick as she looked at the ground getting further and further away. She’d never enjoyed heights. She mused to herself that if she’d been born a pegasus, she’d just live her life as an earth pony, never leaving the ground.

“Calm down Tawny,” said Darkstreak, “There’s more surfaces than just clouds up there.”

CHAPTER 7

Meanwhile, on the Cloudsdale water-tower, Night Arrow sat by himself, looking over the city in the sky.

“This is a mess... not only do I have to pick ONE of the mares to be a co-captain, I have to bring up a B-Waver to the A-Wave. And if I pick one of their captains, I have to choose a B-Wave member to replace THAT captain! UUGGGGHHH...” He fell to his back, eyes closed in frustration. ‘damnit, Darkstreak! Retiring now has complicated everything!”

He lied in silence for a moment, “Come on, Arrow,” he said to himself, “let’s figure this out. Okay, okay... If I pick... Skylight to be co-captain, then we’d be running the whole team! Just me and her against the world, like it’s always been!” He smiled at the idea of him and his best friend running the show... then his smile disappeared “But CC would be mad, and maybe even quit. She has been working really hard with the Princess,” his voice became more and more crestfallen. “I guess she kinda deserves... ugh...” He sat up. “But if I choose CC, Skylight may have trouble recognizing CC’s authority over her...”

“Quit talkin’ to yourself, you look like a buckin’ nutcase.” Darkstreak landed on the metal water-tower with a boom, denting it slightly.

"Darkstreak!” Arrow yelled and ran towards him, angrily “This is all YOUR fault!!”

“Hold on kid, I’ve got some precious cargo here.” He turned his back toward Arrow. Trixie was curled up tightly, completely enveloped in her magic, and attached to Darkstreak’s back like a saddle. “Well, it’s not really precious to me, but I figured you’d want it.”

“Trixie??” Arrow stepped back.

“Oh, Night Arrow!” she jumped and embraced him, tightly.

“Ack-” he coughed; she nearly knocked the wind out of him.

“Geeze, Darkstreak, you coulda at least given her some goggles! Her eyes are bloodshot!" Darkstreak shrugged, and brushed the light blue mane-hair off his back. "What are you doing in Cloudsdale?" Arrow coughed out, "You can’t stand on clouds...!”

“I know! That’s why I’m not letting go of you until we Get BaCK TO THE GROUND!!” She yelled in his ear, glaring at Darkstreak.

“Look, Terry--” Darkstreak began

“IT’S TRIXIE!!” She snapped back at him.

“Fine, Trixie. Look, we’re on a huge piece of metal. You can stand here perfectly fine. And if you do happen to fall somehow, both Arrow and I are fully capable of catching you before you reach the ground. So calm down.”

Trixie loosened her grip on Arrow. “Fine.” She took a few steps back. “Arrow, honey, we’re here to help.”

“Help? Haha, how can either of you possibly help!?” Arrow walked towards Darkstreak, “You think you can just retire!? Just like that? Leave me with all these stupid decisions? Make ME look like the bad guy to whoever I don’t choose?” Darkstreak stood there quietly.

Trixie stood up, “Night Arrow, we’re just--”

“And you!” he turned to Trixie, then mockingly: “OOooh, Night Arrow! You should REALLY tell the rest of the team what happened! MAYBE they’ll even help!” He scoffed, “OR, maybe they"ll just start beating the living HAY out of eachother!!”

Trixie lowered her head, sadly. The tower was quiet for a moment. “Just-- leave me alone, both of you... *sigh* I"ll figure it out.” He walked back towards the edge and sat.

Darkstreak walked over to him at the edge. “I didn’t abandon you, ya idiot.” He said. Night Arrow couldn’t help but laugh. Even when trying to sound sympathetic, Darkstreak couldn’t help but be insulting. “I haven’t been around much anyway, not much is gonna change. You’re already doing all the work of a captain, now you"ll just get the credit.”

Night Arrow turned to him, “But both CC and Skylight have been working much harder, and feel they deserve the title for different reasons...”

Darkstreak stayed quiet for a moment, choosing his words. “Night, the captain of a racing team has to be both organized and an ideal racer. Skylight’s still immature, and CC just isn’t that fast. They both have their flaws, but you gotta ask yourself: which flaw is easiest to fix?”

“Night Arrow, sweetie...” Trixie cautiously tip-toed towards the edge, still weary of falling, “I know Darkstreak said this is like, your place that you go and everything... but can we please, pleeeaase get back to the groUND SOON!?”

Night Arrow couldn’t help but laugh. “Alright.” he got up, “but this time, here, wear my goggles.”

Arrow’s Story, An Interlude, Part i

“But it’s THIS Friday night!” The little orange filly whined. “Me and Rainbow Dash were supposed to go, but she’s out with her friends on some adventure again. . .!”

“Look, Scootaloo, you know I can’t go to those races anymore...” the yellow mare replied, ‘they just remind me of Dad.” She continued washing the dishes.

“But that was forever ago!” Scootaloo dramatically dropped her head onto the kitchen table. “He’d want you to go, you know. . .”

The pegasus at the sink stopped washing her dishes, and dried her hooves. “Can’t you just go another day? When Rainbow Dash gets back?”

“But Raaaaaaindrops! This is the OPENING RACE! And there’s a rumor going around that The Shadowbolts will be racing with a new captain!”

“The Shadowbolts?” Raindrops sat at the table with her little sister. “That’s what that new racing team is called? The one Princess Luna started?”

“Mmhmm!” Scootaloo nodded. “Or at least, that’s what I hear... since I’ve never actually been to a race!”

“Hmm.. well, I haven’t been to any races since it was just Wonderbolts racing against other Wonderbolts--”

“And I’ve still NEVER been to any races!” Scootaloo interrupted, "Dad passed before he was able to take me!!”

Raindrops sat at her kitchen table. ‘Maybe this will be good...’ She thought. ‘I haven’t seen Spitfire or any of the other girls since we lived in Canterlot...’ Scootaloo stared at her sister as Raindrops continued her thought: ‘...and it would be pretty interesting to see some actual competition.’

Scootaloo’s smile widened. After a bit of thinking, Raindrops finally turned to Scootaloo: “Fine.”

“YAY!” Scootaloo ran to her room, “I"ll start packing!!”

CHAPTER 8

Meanwhile, back at Everfree Stadium, the B-Wave practice ended, and the two A-Wave mares were getting impatient as ever.

“Where in Equestria could they have gone?” CC asked, pacing back and forth.

“Cloudsdale water tower.” Skylight answered calmly, while laying flat on her back under a tree.

“What? Did they say that?” CC stopped pacing.

“Nope.”

“Then how do you know?”

“That’s where Arrow always goes when he’s upset.”

CC walked over and sat next to Skylight. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen
Arrow upset...” CC said, “he’s always so... relaxed. Sarcastic... really sarcastic... but never really mad.”

Skylight sat up. “He always goes over there, and thinks about going back home.” CC looked confused for a moment.

“What do you mean, ‘home’?” she asked.

“You know, Canterlot! We didn’t always live in the Everfree Forest ya know!” Skylight responded with a smile. “Arrow used to live with his Dad and two sisters back in Canterlot! In fact, his dad used to be the coach for the Wonderbolts!”

“What??” CC exclaimed.

Skylight quickly covered her mouth with her hooves, her eyes opened wide. “Uh- oh... you didn’t know that, did you?”

CC looked down, in thought. “No, I didn’t... but I guess it kinda makes sense... I guess you guys had to have come from somewhere...”

Skylight was a bit panicked, “Oh no! I don’t know if that was supposed to be a secret...”

“Who else knows this?” CC stood up.

“Just me, Arrow, Darkstreak, and Spitfire.”

“Spitfire!? As in, captain of the Wonderbolts Spitfire? What does the leader of our rival team have to do with this?” CC never felt so out of the loop.

“Spitfire and Arrow’s sister grew up together! They were like, BFFs or something...” The words were coming out of Skylight’s mouth like a broken fountain. She’d always been terrible at keeping secrets, especially secrets she didn’t even know were secrets to begin with.

CC walked away calmly, but worried. Clearly Arrow didn’t trust her. They’d been on the same team for about a year now, and he hadn’t even bothered to tell her about his past. Then it hit her... this wasn’t all his fault. She was a smart mare, nopony had to
tell her that communication works both ways. She had never really asked. She could have easily started the conversation, but she’d always been so busy with paperwork, and books, and plans, she realized she barely even knew her own team! She knew almost everything about Luna, but almost nothing about Skylight! Or Darkstreak! Or... or Night Arrow. It’s no wonder he was so reluctant to promote her; he doesn’t even know her...

“Please don’t say anything!” Skylight pleaded from her spot under the tree.

“I won’t...” CC said. Just then, with a large pound that shook the trees in the area, Darkstreak landed with Trixie on his back, this time, wearing Arrow’s goggles. CC and Skylight ran over to them.

“Where’s Arrow?” Skylight asked,

“Is he alright?” CC added.

“I’m fine.” Arrow’s voice came from behind them. “...and I’ve made my decision.”

Trixie handed him back his goggles and stood there silently. Darkstreak stood
there with his smug smile. Skylight and CC stood next to each other, waiting for an answer, while Arrow paced back and forth, as if choosing his words wisely.

“It wasn’t an easy decision, I want you both to know that right now. But I’ve cleared my mind, and I know Luna wants a decision immediately. I expect that no matter who gets this position, you will both react with dignity, and maturity.”

CC began shaking slightly with nerves. Skylight closed her eyes, and anticipated the worst. Night Arrow stopped pacing and stood directly in front of them. He let out a sigh, and glanced at Darkstreak behind him. Turning back towards the two mares, he stood up straight, and narrowed his eyes confidently. “Skylight,”

CHAPTER 9

CC closed her eyes, holding back tears. Skylight opened hers. “Night Arrow,” Skylight smiled “I--”

“Let me finish.” He cut her off. Skylight’s smile disappeared. “Follow me into the locker room, we need to speak in private.” Skylight looked confused for a moment, then followed Night Arrow into his locker room.

CC didn’t move a muscle. She knew she deserved that promotion. She didn’t dare break down in front of Darkstreak or Trixie, but a tear managed to defiantly squeeze itself passed her eyelid. Her lip quivered, and she sniffled a bit. “Damn it,” she thought to herself. “Not now, Cloud Crash.... don’t break down.” She talked herself calm again.

“Trixie is... going to head back to her cart...” Trixie said to Darkstreak, trying to excuse herself from the heartbreaking scene. Darkstreak nodded and Trixie headed over to her cart. CC sat down, still trying not to cry.

Darkstreak walked over and sat next to her. “Hey kid.” he said, “Ya know, for being on the same team... we don’t talk much.” CC appreciated Darkstreak trying to get her mind off things, but she just didn’t feel much like a conversation.

Meanwhile, in Night Arrow’s locker room, Skylight and Arrow were sitting at one of the benches. “Oh my Celestia, thank you, Arrow!” Skylight reached to hug him. “I won’t let you dow--”

“Sky’ I have to tell you something.” Arrow cut her off, and blocked the hug.

Skylight was confused. “What’s up, Arrow?”

His eyes turned sympathetic, and a bit glossy... then returned to being stern. “Skylight, you’re my best friend. You’re like a sister to me. As much as I miss my own sisters, you’ve helped me fill that void.” Skylight smiled, she’d always seen Night Arrow as a brother, since she can’t remember ever even having a family. “It’s always been us against the world... and it always will be.” He continued, “Our friendship is too strong to be ruined by something as insignificant as rank.” Skylight’s smile dropped.... she knew exactly where this was going, and she didn’t like it. “Leadership positions take more than just doing well as a member... I... damn it, I had this all planned out in my
head on the flight over here...”

Skylight put her hoof on Arrow’s shoulder. “It’s alright, Night.” she said. Her eyes
watered. “I understand..” She smiled, “Cloud Crash will be a great Co-Captain.”

Arrow’s Story: An Interlude; part ii

Scootaloo pressed her face against the glass of the train. She’d been to Canterlot a few times, for things like the Hearthwarming Eve’s play, and Princess Cadence’s wedding. But she had always gone with her friends, Sweetie Bell and Apple Bloom, and they only went because they were following their older sisters.

Raindrops was about Rarity and Applejack’s age, but she had always been busy taking care of Scootaloo. When she wasn’t playing single-parent to her, she was working as the Cloudsdale weather coordinator for the Ponyville district.

“Hey Raindrops, did you see the--” Scootaloo turned to her sister, but she had already fallen asleep. “Oh...” she turned back towards the window. She knew her sister worked very hard to support them, so the vacation would be a well-deserved break.

She hopped off the bench and climbed up the other side where Raindrops was napping. She leaned her head on her sister’s shoulder, and fell asleep in her warmth.

CHAPTER 10

Arrow and Skylight emerged from the locker room to see Darkstreak sitting, talking with CC under a tree. “Hey, CC!” Arrow called, walking over.

“I’m fine, Arrow!” she called back, her voice shaky, and irritated. Skylight and Darkstreak walked away to give them some privacy.

“Huh?” Arrow stopped in his tracks. “Oh, wait no... Cloud Crash listen--”

“No! You listen, Night Arrow!” she turned and faced him, her eyes irritated, and glossy; tears down her cheeks. Arrow was taken aback. “I worked my flank off this last year being a Shadowbolt! I’ve trained under Luna almost every day, learning the ins and outs of the racing industry! I’ve met everypony that had investments in the Wonderbolts, and convinced them to invest in us instead! I’ve gotten this team funding that we probably don’t even deserve! These uniforms? They weren’t free, you know!”

Arrow sat down, not expecting little egghead CC to have such an angry rant. She’d clearly been holding this back for a while...

“Before Luna and me, there was just the Wonderbolts! Just them! No competition! Racing was boring! We have fans now, Night Arrow. We had to hire advertising ponies, we had to set up rules and regulations...” She sniffled, closed her eyes, and hung her head. “we had to... *sniff* while you’re here in the middle of nowhere...” Unexpectedly, CC wrapped her arms around Arrow and buried her face in his shoulder, crying. “This is where I should have been.”

Arrow had no idea what was going on. “CC, I couldn’t be more lost. Why are you so upset?”

“I know why you picked Skylight.” she let go of Arrow. He smiled,

“Cloud Crash, I--”

“No. Let me finish.”

Arrow stayed quiet.

“You barely even know me. We’ve been on a history-making team for over a year now, and we barely know each other. It was just the four of us, and I spent all my time over in Canterlot playing secretary, while you three spent your time here becoming better flyers. . . and better friends. I don’t blame you at all, Night Arrow. I should spend more time on the track than in some air conditioned office.”

Just then, Skylight came trotting over. CC continued, “I promise to have Luna hire somepony else to handle most of the paperwork, and I will spend as much time as I can here at Everfree Stadium.”

“Well duuh,” Skylight inerrupted. “As co-captain you’re gonna have to spend a whole LOT of time here in Everfree! You can even sleep over more often! We’ll have so much fun!!” Arrow narrowed his eyes at Skylight. “...so much... uh, professional fun?” she corrected herself.

“Co-Captain?” CC asked, confused. “I don’t understand... didn’t you--?”

“Cloud Crash, That’s what I was gonna tell you when I came over here. I didn’t pick Skylight as a Co-Captain, I chose you!”

CC smiled. “Oh Night Arrow! Thank you so much!” she jumped up and flew around a bit, overjoyed.

Skylight followed her, calling out “Congrats Co-Captain! ...or ‘CC’ for short? *gasp!* So, now you’re CCCC for short!? Or C4? Isn’t that an explosive?? Hey, CCCC! You’re an explosive!” Her voice trailed off as they flew around the track a bit.

“Some things never change, eh?” Darkstreak said, walking up behind Night Arrow.

“They’re gonna have to change, Darkstreak.” Arrow replied.

“It"ll be good, kid. I wouldn’t sweat it. The big race is in 2 days though... you and CC better show up at Canterlot first thing tomorrow, check in with Luna and me. Get all that paperwork settled... make it official, ya know?”

“We will.” Arrow said.

“But there’s still a problem, Arrow. You can’t just have the three of ya in the A- Wave. It’s against offical racing policy.”

“I know, I have to move a pony up from B-Wave, but picking one of their captains means the other will--”

“Arrow, buddy... you gotta think outside the box. Rules say at least four... why don’t you pick a couple of B-Wavers? Eh? Give the B-Wave an entirely new set of captains, and maybe recruit some newbies?”

Arrow hadn’t thought of that... “Have more than four A-Wave members?”

“Yeah, why not? The Wonderbolts got like a dozen or some A-Wavers... you gotta learn to trust your team. That’s what a captain does.”

Arrow’s mind raced with possibility. The opening race in two days only had A- Waves racing to get investors interested, and fans to buy merchandise and pick their
favorite team. He still had time to set up B-Wave ranks. But he still needed to work quickly. “Thanks, Darkstreak.” Arrow stood up. “I’ll see you tomorrow, I have some captain business to take care of.” He ran towards the two racing mares. “CC!! Meet with me in the locker room!” He called. “We have some promotions to plan out...”

CHAPTER 11

“Okay, so who do we have on the B-Wave right now?” Arrow asked, leaning against the wall of the locker room. CC was sitting on a bench with her B-Wave files scattered out in front of her.

“Well, obviously there are the Captains, Fire Blitz and Treble Midnight.”

“Treble’s last name is Midnight?” Arrow asked.

CC sighed, “I was wondering why these files were so dusty. You never even go through them do you?”

“I do! Whenever I have time.” Arrow responded.

“Night Arrow, these haven’t been updated since... the middle of last season! According to Fire Blitz’s file, she doesn’t even have her cutie mark yet!”

“Calm down CC, she just got that like, what... a few weeks ago--?”

“Over two months ago.” CC interrupted, dryly.

“That’s not that long ago... I just haven’t had time to--”

“Night Arrow! You have to keep these updated more often then every couple of months! I’m taking these to Canterlot.” CC began to aggressively gather the files in her hooves.

“What!? No, wait!” Arrow jumped up, and snatched the files away from her. “You see? This is exactly the problem! What happened to all this talk about spending more time here in Everfree? Canterlot is Wonderbolts territory! Let them have it!”

“Canterlot is also where Luna is! And she’s the one funding the Shadowbolts!” CC said.

“Well then,” Arrow smirked “it looks like we’ll have another thing to bring up tomorrow during our little meeting with the Princess of the Night...”

“Fine, but first things first, we need an answer on the A-Wave promotions.” CC grabbed the files back from Arrow and spread them out on his make-shift table.

“Alright Ms. Crash, list off our candidates.” Arrow said, leaning against the wall, laying back down on the floor.

“Well, we have the current captain, Fire Blitz...” CC read the file, “She’s a great leader, a very strong flyer, and gets a lot of respect from the team, but she has a temper on her, and doesn’t take criticism very well.”

Arrow laughed, “Sounds like a mini, mare-version of Darkstreak.”

CC smiled at the comparison. “Yeah, you should see her running the practices. She doesn’t joke around as much as you do.”

“Sounds boring.” Arrow yawned.

CC, being very by-the-books herself admired that quality in Fire Blitz, and had always thought Night Arrow was too layed-back during practices. “I think we should promote her.” CC said.

“CC, chill.” Arrow said, “You’ve literally only read me one candidate. Let’s not get too ahead of ourselves.”

“Well, the minimum is one promotion, and we need to talk to Luna tomorrow morning. I think if the four of us show up, she’ll know we’re taking this seriously, and we can talk to Fire Blitz and Skylight about moving the rest of the team around.”

“So, what? We just move up Blitz, and put the rest of the B-Wave on hold?”

“Well, yeah... the four of us can race opening day in Canterlot, so the pressure will be off to rush and promote other members, then maybe we’ll have both more insight from their ex-captain, and more time before the second race of the season to finalize the roster for both the A-Wave and B-Waves.”

“CC I like the way you think.” Arrow sat up, smliing. “Alright, let’s go let her know--” Just that moment, a large crash came from the entrance of the locker room.

The door swung wide open, and collapsed onto the floor (as if they’d been leaning on the door) was Fire Blitz and Skylight.

CC walked over to them “*Sigh* Something tells me she already knows.”

“WE WEREN’T EAVESDROPPING!” Skylight yelled. “WE DIDN’T HEAR ANYTHING ABOUT A FIRE BLITZ BEING IN THE A-WAVE!”

Night Arrow walked over to the rest of the ponies. “Skylight, were you--?”

“NO *YOU’RE* A LIAR!!” Skylight cut him off.

Fire Blitz stood up and brushed herself off. CC walked over
to her. “Well, I assume you overheard, but congratulations nonetheless, Ms. Fire Blitz.”

“CONGRATULATIONS FOR WHAT, CC?” Skylight continued yelling conspicuously. “WE HAVE NO IDEA WHAT YOURE TALKING AB--”

Night Arrow covered her mouth with his hoof. “Sky, it’s okay, really. Just- stop yelling.”

Fire Blitz was smiling proudly, “Oh man! Seriously guys, thank you so much! I won’t let you down!”

“I’ve seen you fly, Blitz” Arrow turned to her “I know you won’t. But this means we have to be in Canterlot, Luna’s office early tomorrow morning. You can borrow one of CC’s Official A-Wave Shadowbolt Formal Shirts. You seem to be about her size.”

“It won’t be a problem,” CC said, “I have several extras.”

“...and Skylight,” Arrow turned to the neon green mare, “I need you to be on your best behavior. We’re going to show Luna that we’re capable of being professionals. And even though CC is the chosen co-captain, you need to show Luna you’re 100% okay with that, alright?”

Skylight was taken aback a bit by Arrow’s statement. “Uh... okay, Arrow. No problem...”

“Well, it’s getting late, and we have a big morning ahead of us tomorrow. So, get some sleep mares; oh, and Blitz,” Arrow put his hoof out “Welcome to the A-Wave.” Blitz smiled and shook his hoof.

CHAPTER 12

Leaving Night Arrow’s locker room, CC and Fire Blitz walked Skylight across the field to her own room. “Thank you so much for letting me borrow a shirt, CC.” Blitz said

“Of course, Fire Blitz! Let’s meet here tomorrow morning at 7:30 sharp, and so you can try it on, and we"ll all fly over together.”

“Awesome! Goodnight guys!” Blitz flew off, smiling broadly.

“Congrats again!” CC yelled after her. Skylight had a confused, concerned look on her face.

“What’s the matter, Skylight?” CC asked

“It’s just... Night Arrow, he kinda... I don’t know.... wasn’t that kinda mean?”

CC returned the concerned look. “Skylight, he just... he’s had a really long day... I’m sure he didn’t mean to hurt your feelings...”

“He talked to me like I was a filly!” Skylight sat down outside her locker room, clearly distraught.

CC was not very close to anypony. At all. She’d always had her face in a book, and when she wasn’t reading, she was practicing flying. Skylight was the closest thing CC had to a best friend and she knew Skylight was always in a good mood. To see her like this, she knew that this must have really upset her.

“Skylight, may I come in?” CC asked.

“Oh, yeah sure...” Skylight opened her door and they headed over to her messy locker room. CC walked over and sat on the blanket covered locker room bench.

“Sit down, Skylight, there’s something you should know . . .”

Arrow’s Story: An Interlude; part iii

Raindrops and Scootaloo walked across the Canterlot Station platform. “Do you have everything?” Raindrops adjusted Scootaloo’s backpack.

“Yes, Raindrops... I can take care of my own stuff...” Scootaloo replied, annoyed with her sister’s overbearingness.

“Ms. Raindrops? Ms. Scootaloo?” A stallion’s voice called from behind them. The sisters turned to see a light grey unicorn in royal guard attire.

“Yes...?” Raindrops replied, hesitant.

“First off, welcome to Canterlot,” the guard said “My name is Silver Shield, and I come on behalf of Princess Celestia.”

“Princess Celestia?” Raindrops echoed. “Are we in some kind of trouble?”

“No no, not at all.” Silver Shield smiled, “You’re the daughters of the late retired Wonderbolts Coach, Morning Arrow, correct?”

Raindrops" heart sank at the mention of her father’s name. “Uh, yes sir. Yes we are.”

“I’m very sorry for your loss, Ms. Raindrops. I had the opportunity to meet your father, he was a great Stallion.”

“Thank you Mr. Silver Shield, I appreciate it, but my sister and I have been on this train all day, and we really have to be going to our hotel room. We have plans in the morning. Come on, Scoots.”

Raindrops tugged Scootaloo by her backpack. “Oh, Miss Raindrops, wait please!” The guard followed her. “I’m sorry if I offended you, but my interruption is not without purpose.” Raindrops stopped and impatiently looked at the guard. “You see, when you bought your tickets for the train, your name was mentioned to the conductor, and he sent a message here to Canterlot. The Princess caught wind of this and personally asked for you two to see her upon your arrival.”

Scootaloo’s eyes widened, “We’re gonna meet Princess Celestia?” Her other two friend’s sisters were always being called to meet the Princess, but Raindrops wasn’t an element of harmony or whatever, she was just a weather pegasus. Scootaloo loved hearing Sweetie Belle and Applebloom’s stories about their sisters’ adventures, and now, she’d have one of her own to share!

“What’s this about, Silver Sheild?” Raindrops said, covering Scootaloo’s mouth.

“I assure you, Miss, that’s all I know. Now if you’d please, we have a taxi waiting for you, your sister, and your things.”

CHAPTER 13

Skylight and CC sat down at the old locker room bench.

“What is it, CC?” Skylight asked.

“Skylight, this last year has been fun..” CC began, “and nopony has more fun on this racing team than you.” Skylight smiled, remembering all the good times of the first season. CC continued, “but there is a such thing as *too much* fun.”

Skylight’s smile disappeared. “Wait, what do you mean?”

CC sighed, “Skylight, I’ve been working with Luna this entire season, and... well she doesn’t... really... trust you.”

Skylight stood up, appalled. “Doesn’t trust me!? Why not? I’m super reliable! You need something, and Skylight’s your mare!” She exclaimed, pointing at herself dramatically.

“No no no, not like she’s worried you’ll steal something, or lie, or anything bad like that.” CC explained. Skylight sat back down,

“Then what?” “Skylight, Princess Luna thinks you’re immature.”

That’s the second time Skylight was called immature in one day. She had no idea everypony thought of her that way. “Oh...” Skylight slouched in her seat. “Do you think... Arrow thinks that too?”

CC chose her words wisely. “Night Arrow has a long list of stuff to worry about . . . and he just wants to make sure you’re not on that list.”

Skylight’s eyes narrowed. “Are you saying you think he has to worry about me?”

CC knew she didn’t choose her words wisely *enough* “Uh-- no! No, that’s not it. I think, well, the team doesn’t really see Princess Luna except for on race days in Canterlot, and since we’ll all just be in her office as a team tomorrow morning, he’s probably just asking us to be on our best behaviors...”

“Us?” Skylight stood up. “He didn’t ask ‘us’ to be on our best behaviors! He asked ME to be on my best behavior!”

CC immediately regretted bringing this up to begin with. “Skylight, listen--”

“No!” The neon green mare cut her off. “Apparently, everypony thinks I’m some kind of filly! I’m two years older than you, CC! I’m only a year younger than Night Arrow! I can take care of me! I don’t need anypony keeping an eye on me, making sure I don’t EMBARRASS us!” She began to get teary-eyed. “I am an A-Wave Shadowbolt! You all don’t think I take this team seriously!? This is the ONLY thing I take seriously! I’m-- *sniff* I’m the best racer this team has!”

CC just sat there helplessly as her best friend broke down. There was a long silence, then Skylight whimpered out softly, through her tears, ‘the Shadowbolts are my life...” Skylight walked towards the door to her locker room.

CC stood up, “Wait, Skylight! I didn’t mean--” Skylight opened the door.

“I"ll see you tomorrow, Cloud Crash.” She said, sounding defeated. CC was about to protest, but she felt she’d said enough. This did not go at all as planned. She walked through the locker room threshold.

“I’m sorry, Skylight... I didn’t mean to--” *SLAM!* Skylight threw the door shut. “. . . offend you.”

CHAPTER 14

Meanwhile, back in Night Arrow’s locker room, Trixie decided to stay the night. “Well, you’re looking a bit more relaxed, Mr. Captain.” She laid down next to him.

“I feel more relaxed.” Arrow laughed. “This day definitely escalated out of control. To think just this morning I was running practice like usual, and the mailmare delivered that letter that eventually snowballed into this whole mess...”

“I feel you handled it pretty well, Arrow.” She said, leaning her head on his chest. “And it’s not a complete mess. I mean, now you’re the captain of the Shadowbolts! You guys are becoming bigger than the Wonderbolts, And it’s only been one season!”

Arrow smiled at the idea, then his mind wandered where it always does. “Do you think if we get too big, and popular... my family would find out?” He turned to her.

“Oh, Night Arrow...” Trixie said sympathetically. “you’ve been bringing them up more and more lately. Why don’t you just go visit them? Ponyville is kind of a small town...”

“I can’t...” Arrow sighed. “...not after this long. And you have no idea how important my dad was in the Wonderbolts.”

“I can imagine...” Trixie said. “He was the coach, right?”

“Yeah, he was the second coach since the team was founded, and he was the longest running coach they’d ever had. I pretty much had a guaranteed spot in their roster. And now look at me. He’d think the Shadowbolts were a joke.”

Trixie just listened as Arrow trailed off into hypotheticals.

“I can hear him now: ‘The Shadowbolts? What in the hay is that?” He said, making his voice deeper, imitating his father. “Is that some kind of weird Wonderbolts fan club? What happened, couldn’t think of a more original name?” He closed his eyes, frustrated at the imaginary conversation. “I’m the captain of a team who’s sole purpose is to bring down my father’s legacy.”

“Well when you put it like that--” Trixie said.

“Then there’s Raindrops!” Arrow continued his rant. “She’s Skylight’s age, but she’s so level-headed, and responsible. She’d honestly make a better captain than me... heh, but don’t tell her I said that, she’d never let me forget it...” Arrow smiled reminiscing.

Trixie loved the look on his face when he talked about his family. It was clear he missed them very much, but as proud as he was, this was one thing he couldn’t do. She knew he just couldn’t bring himself to go and visit them. He clearly regretted staying in Everfree for as long as he did, but it was too late to change anything.

“She never cared for racing though,” he said, ‘she kinda took charge of things when Mom passed. I mean with Dad coaching all the time, and me constantly training, I guess somepony had to take care of...” he paused for a moment. “...Scootaloo.” His voice trailed off again, his eyes became glassy. “She was just a foal when I last saw her... She probably doesn’t even know who I am...”

Trixie hugged him tightly.

“I’m her only brother, and she doesn’t even know who I am . . .”

Trixie couldn’t add anything to the conversation. Clearly, Night Arrow had to work this out himself, and Trixie was pretty confident he’d eventually make the right decision.

Neither of them had anything else to say that night, so in silence, they both nodded off to sleep.

“It’s pretty late...” Scootaloo said, as they exited their taxi. “You think the Princess will be mad that we’re here this late?”

“Scoots, she called us here.” Raindrops said. “She should be worried about upsetting us... we still have to get to the hotel.”

The two pegasus mares were escorted by Silver Shield to the royal throne room. The doors opened, and there in all her glory was the Princess of the Sun herself. Her green, pink, and blue mane constantly flowing despite any wind. It seemed to be made up of pure magic.

“Your highness, Ms. Raindrops, and young Ms. Scootaloo.” Silver Shield announced; they bowed.

“Hello, Raindrops. It’s been a long time.” Celestia smiled.

Scootaloo gasped, and whispered, “You’ve met her!?”

Raindrops ignored her little sister, and they both rose to their hooves.

“It has, and I always appreciate an audience with the Princess, but we just got here, and are very tired. I have to know, what’s this all about?” Raindrops said, while approaching the stairs to the throne.

“I heard news you two were coming to see the opening race in two days.”

“Yeah, Scootaloo had never been to one, so I figured now’s a good a time as any...”

“Oh, Scootaloo, I haven’t seen you since you were a foal.” Celestia smiled.

Scootaloo’s eyes widened, she nudged Raindrops again and whispered, “I’ve met her!?”

“Look, Princess, I appreciate you checking in with us, but our hotel is on the other side of Canterlot and--”

“Oh, don’t worry about that.” Celestia said. “Any family of Coach Morning Arrow is always welcomed in my home. Your father was an integral part of making the Wonderbolts as successful as they are, and for that I am beyond sympathetic for your loss, and even more grateful to you and your family. You’re both staying in one of our royal suites tonight and tomorrow night, no charge. I also took the liberty of canceling your reservations at the other hotel, and getting all your bits refunded.”

Scootaloo couldn’t believe this was happening. Raindrops seemed less than thrilled.

“Oh, thank you Princess.” She said with false sincerity.

“You’re welcome, my little pony.” Celestia smiled. “It’s the least I can do.”

Raindrops forced a smile, “Will that be all, Princess? Scootaloo really needs her rest...” Scootaloo glared at Raindrops. She wasn’t the least bit tired.

“Yes, but please, can we meet in private tomorrow morning? I have some things to discuss with you.”

“Of course.” Raindrops bowed once again. “Now if you’ll excuse us.” They both turned and headed out of the throne room. Silver Shield closed the giant doors behind them.

CHAPTER 15

“Immature!?” Skylight shouted at her mirror. “I’m not immature! THEY’RE being immature!” She paced back and forth. “I"ll show them just how mature I can be!”

She glanced at the locker that held her flight suit and official member shirt, among other various articles of clothing she had but never really used.

“In fact, I’ll be so mature, they won’t even recognize me...” She smiled deviously.

CHAPTER 15

The next morning bright and early, CC landed back in the middle of Everfree Stadium, punctual as usual carrying a folded Shadowbolts shirt in her pack. She hadnʼt slept very well, knowing her friend was still so mad at her.

“Did ya bring it?” an excited voice called from nearby.

“Huh? Oh, Fire Blitz. You startled me.” CC smiled, “Of course! Here you go.”

“Oh, awesome! This is so bucking cool!” She put it on and buttoned it up quickly. “How do I look?” She asked, smiling broadly at CC.

“--Like a winner.” Arrow said emerging from his locker room. “And it suits you, Blitz.” Fire Blitz still couldn’t believe she was on the same level as Arrow and Skylight. She was actually going to go head to head with Spitfire and Soarin!

Night Arrow yawned, “Well, you guys are here early... wait, whereʼs Sky? Is she still in her room?”

“Looks like it.” CC said turning towards her door.

“Well, go get her.” Arrow said. “If we leave now weʼll get to the castle with enough time to get some coffee.”

CC nodded, hesitantly. She reluctantly walked over towards Skylightʼs locker room door.

“Uh, Skylight?” She called, softly. “How are you doing in there?” There was no response.

“Those doors are made of metal, CC!” Arrow called. “You know youʼre gonna have to be louder than that!”

CC sighed, then knocked on Skylightʼs door. “*ahem* Skylight! Come on, weʼre going to be late!”

“Oh, we canʼt have that now can we?” Skylight said, opening her door. “It would not be very mature of me if I were to make everypony late.”

Arrow, CC, and Fire Blitz all gasped at the neon green mare standing in the doorway.

CHAPTER 16

“Skylight . . .!” Arrow said. “You look--”

“Mature?” Skylight interrupted.

“You own makeup?” Fire Blitz added.

“I have some laying around the old locker room.” She responded, sticking her snout up. “We are meeting with royalty today, I figured Iʼd look my best.”

“Itʼs just Luna.” Arrow said.

“Is she not a Princess? And our boss, Night Arrow?” Skylight asked rhetorically.

“Skylight, stop acting weird.” Fire Blitz said. “Youʼre freaking me out.”

“Weird?” Skylight said. “Iʼm sorry if this is weird for you, Fire Blitz, but you all have to get used to it. This is new, improved, mature Skylight!”

CC looked worried. Skylight was obviously blowing this whole thing out of proportion, and was going to make a complete fool of herself at the meeting today.

“Uh, Skylight,” Arrow approached her. “I donʼt know what kind of game youʼre playing, but just--”

“-be on my best behavior, yes, I know Night Arrow.” She cut him off with a passive aggressive smile.

ʻGreat,ʼ CC thought, ʻArrow seems worried as ever again. Just as he was beginning to feel he had a handle on the situation, Skylight pulls this stunt.ʼ

“Alright, A-Wave, letʼs head out...” Night Arrow said, still skeptical of Skylightʼs new persona. The four pegasus ponies jumped into the sky and headed to Canterlot.

CHAPTER 16

The Princess of the Night was sitting in her throne behind the large, dark desk when they all walked in through the balcony door. Darkstreak was standing to her right. “Oh, Night Arrow, right on time.” Luna said.

“Was there any doubt?” Arrow said through his smile.

“and you brought... everyone.” Lunaʼs eyes scanned the other three pegasus ponies walking in from the balcony.

“Yeah, I figured we all donʼt meet too often, so I wanted to bring in the whole A- Wave.” Arrow explained as the other three sat in line next to him. “I mean, itʼs kind of a big deal, us moving the roster around. Figured they should all be here.”

“Well, thatʼs a nice surprise,” Luna smiled with a hint of passive-aggression. “but I hope you made your decision.”

Night Arrow brushed off the passive aggressive smile from Luna. It was no surprise CC picked up some of her attitude and mannerisms from working so closely with her this past season. She was already quite the aggressive little egghead.

“Itʼs all business with you, eh Luna?” Darkstreak finally spoke. Luna ignored the comment.

“I have.” Arrow sat up straight. “Princess Luna, I would like to introduce Co- Captain of the Shadowbolts, Cloud Crash.”

“Excellent.” Luna smiled, this time more genuinely. “I knew you would make the right choice.” Skylight visibly winced at the remark, but kept up her act and large, mature smile. “Oh, Skylight.” Luna said. “You look nice today.”

“Yup!-- err, I mean, why thank you, Princess. Iʼm trying a new mane style.” Skylight said, overly-annunciating all her words. CC glanced nervously at Night Arrow.

“Hmm, I didnʼt even know ya owned makeup, Skylight.” Darkstreak added.

“Well, yes I just have some laying around the locker room, I figured hey why not?” She said, never dropping her smile.

“Well, it suits you.” Luna said. “And it looks like the Captain of the B-Wave decided to drop by for a visit as well.”

“Oh, actually Luna” Arrow stood up, “Fire Blitz is our newest member of the A- Wave.” Fire Blitz smiled proudly.

“Oh, good. That makes four once again. It looks like everyone is getting a promotion.” Luna said. Skylight once again twitched at the remark. “Well letʼs get this going,” Luna said as she pulled out paperwork from her desk. “I just need to you sign at the bottom of these forms and everything will be completely official, and youʼll be set for the opening race tomorrow.” They all grabbed quills and the forms.

“I, Princess Luna, owner and founder of The Everfree Forest Shadowbolts officially decree that Cloud Crash is hereby instated as the Co-Captain of The Everfree Forest Shadowbolts.” CC smiled and sat back down, the other members stomped their hooves.

“Alright, Arrow let me see your paper.” Luna said. “I, Princess Luna, owner and founder of The Everfree Forest Shadowbolts officially decree that Nightaniel Bowan Arrow is hereby--”

“PPPFFFFSSSHHHAhahahaahAhAhAHA!!”

Everypony turned to the source of the noise. “HAHaahAHHA!!” Skylight continued laughing. “I totally forgot your name was ʻNightaniel!!ʼ hHAHaha!”

“Heh, yeah Skylight.” Arrow laughed nervously, his ears back in embarrassment. “Thatʼs what ʻNightʼ is short for...”

“Hahaha, and ʻBowanʼ?? Thatʼs your middle name!? I never knew that! HAha” She rolled onto her back.

“So much for ʻmature-Skylightʼ.” CC whispered at Fire Blitz.

“Is that like ʻBow and Arrowʼ? Was that the joke!?” Skylight continued.

“No, it was my grandfatherʼs name.” Arrow said, annoyed.

“Hey, Skylight, letʼs step outside for a sec, eh?” Darkstreak said, walking over.

“What? No! No, Iʼm sorry. Just, Iʼm sorry that was *ahem* that was rather immature, let me just--”

“Come on.” He picked her up with his massive wing, and continued out to the balcony without missing a beat.

“No, wait! Iʼm sorry!!” her voice became muted once the door closed behind them.

Arrowʼs Story: An Interlude; part v

That morning, Raindrops walked back into Celestiaʼs throne room. “Goodmorning, Raindrops! I hope you slept well.” Celestia greeted, her voice as genuine as always.

“Yeah, these royal beds sure beat the mattresses back home.” She said as she gave a half-hearted bow.

“Well, actually, thatʼs what I wanted to talk to you about, Raindrops.” Celestia said. “I was wondering why you donʼt collect on your fatherʼs retirement fund? Through all the time heʼs spent as the Wonderboltsʼ coach, heʼs earned quite the small fortune. You could be living very well here in Canterlot. Even your old house is still vacant, and ready for you to move back in...”

“I thought I requested that money be donated?” Raindrops said.

“Well, yes, and as generous as that is, it seems that you and your sister could definitely use the funds. You look like you work very hard as weather coordinator for Ponyville, when you can just be living off--”

“Living off my fatherʼs wealth?” Raindrops interupted the Princess. “With all due respect, Celestia, I am not a spoiled little filly. I can work for my own money.”

Celestia knew sheʼd struck a sore subject.

“My father this, my father that. Everything is about my father! Yes, I know he was a great stallion, and he really made his legacy here in Canterlot, but can we please just stop connecting me to him? Canʼt I just work to support my sister and I without being reminded I used to be a silver-spooned Canterlot pony??”

Celestia lowered her head. “Iʼm sorry, Raindrops. I understand you have your pride, and nopony is doubting your ability to care for yourself or Scootaloo.”

Suddenly, a loud, shrill laugh was heard from down the hall. (“HahahHahHAha!”) “What was that?” Raindrops asked.

“Oh itʼs nothing.” Celestia said. “Just my sister and her little racing team. Itʼs their second season in the circuit, and theyʼre having a meeting before tomorrowʼs opening race.”

“Thatʼs the ʻShadowboltsʼ right?” Raindrops asked.

“Yes it is.” Celestia said, obviously not interested in the subject. “To be honest it seems Luna still hasnʼt lost her jealousy of me, but to prevent another outburst, Iʼve allowed it.”

Raindrops glanced down the hall at Lunaʼs closed chamber door. “They donʼt sound very professional...” she said.

Celestia turned towards the hallway. “Theyʼre just some pegasus ponies sheʼd found in the Everfree Forest. Iʼve never met them, but they seem to be giving my Wonderbolts a real run for their money. And race sales have been better than theyʼve been in a long time, so I suppose itʼs a win for everyone.”

Raindrops had a strange feeling. Like she should just walk right over there and open the door. Something was on the other side, something important... but she couldnʼt for the life of her imagine this new racing team having anything to do with her.

“Raindrops?” Celestia broke her trance. “Huh? Oh, sorry Princess.” She shook her head, regaining her focus. “Itʼs quite alright my little pony, just please, promise me, if things get too rough for you, please reconsider moving back to Canterlot. If not for you, for Scootaloo.”

Raindrops almost rolled her eyes, but she knew that would be in bad taste. “Sure thing, Princess.” She bowed instead. “If thatʼs all, I have lunch plans with a friend.”

“Of course,” Celestia said, disappointed. Raindrops trotted pridefully out of the room.

CHAPTER 17

“Wait, Darkstreak! Let me go!!” Skylight struggled through the grip of Darkstreakʼs wing. “I said I was sorry!”

“Whatʼs up with you today, kid?” Darkstreak asked, finally letting her go.

“What ever do you mean?” Skylight said, trying to regain her composure.

“THATʼS what I mean. Why are you talking like a buckinʼ idiot?” Darkstreak was never one for subtlety.

“An idiot?? Thatʼs how Canterlot ponies talk!”

“But thatʼs not how the fastest flyer on the Shadowbolts talks.” Darkstreak said. “And the makeup? And this new rats nest on your head? Whatʼs gotten into you, Skylight?” Darkstreak tossled her mane to its former messy style.

Skylight looked at him angrily, she had worked hard on her new mane. “I... I just, UGH!” Skylight grunted in frustration. “What do you all WANT!?” She screamed.

Darkstreak sat down, “Let it all out, Lite- Brite.”

“Everypony thinks Iʼm immature.” Skylight said. “I just wanted to prove that Iʼm not! Iʼm an adult. I just, I wanna be treated like one!”

“Well laughing and mocking during an official promotion isnʼt the best way to prove your point.” Darkstreak pointed out.

“I know, I just... couldnʼt help it. Itʼs funny, right?”

“Heh, yeah ʻBowanʼ.” Darkstreak smiled. “But kid, thatʼs something ya do after it all. Hold in your laughter till later, then give ʻNightanielʼ a hard time for his stupid name.”

Skylight giggled. Darkstreak sat up, “Look, you want to prove yourself?”

Skylight nodded.

“Letʼs stay out here for a sec, then when theyʼre all done with everything in there, what do you say the two of us have a word with Luna?”

Skylight smiled.

CHAPTER 18

“Princess, look. Iʼm sorry about Skylight... she just--”

“Itʼs alright Arrow.” Luna interrupted. “I can tell she was at least trying to straighten herself out. But we donʼt need her parading around here like royalty, we need her to be as fast as she can, and win us some races. And as far as Iʼm concerned, she started off astonishingly fast, and has only improved since then.”

Arrow smiled, relieved.

“So, thatʼs it? Itʼs official?” CC jumped in, excitedly.

“Yes. Arrow and CC, you are the new Captain and Co-Captain of the The Everfree Forest Shadowbolts.”

“Yes!!” CC danced a bit.

“And Fire Blitz, welcome to the A-Wave.”

Blitz smiled confidently. “I wonʼt let you down, Princess.”

“Iʼm sure you wonʼt.” She said. “And youʼll prove that tomorrow, at the opening race, when youʼll be racing against the Wonderboltʼs A-Wave in round one!”

Fire Blitzʼ confidence turned a bit nervous, but she kept her composure.

“Round one is Fire Blitz and CC against Echo and Misty, correct?” Luna said looking through her paperwork.

“Yup, then itʼs the second half; our fastest versus their fastest,” Arrow said, “Me and Skylight against Spitfire and Soarinʼ.”

Blitz turned a bit pale when it all sank in. The B-Wave was easy for Blitz, she was much faster then all the B-Wave Wonderbolts. She couldnʼt even remember the last time any of them posed a threat to her victory. But this was the big leagues. These races were always packed with spectators. Finding seats were impossible if you got there too late, even as a member! But the B-Wave stands never really gained as much popularity. It was improving, but it still wasnʼt quite the spectacle the A-Wave races were. She knew that because until now, sheʼd always been in the stands with Eclipse, Treble, and Cupid. Then it hit her: not only would she be racing in front of packed stands with something new to prove, all her friends from the B-Wave would also there cheering her on.

What if she couldnʼt keep up? What if Echo and Misty were impossibly fast? Sheʼd embarrass herself in front of both Princesses, her new team mates, her old team mates, the stupid Wonderbolts, and pretty much all of Canterlot.

“Blitz, are you alright?” CC asked, jolting Blitz out of her thoughts.

“Uh, yeah! Yes. Iʼm great! Just super excited!” she forced a smile.

“Excellent!” CC returned the smile, obliviously. “I need you to be completely focused for tomorrow, partner! Iʼm depending on you!”

Blitzʼs heart sank into her stomach. “You bet. . .” she replied.

“Well, Princess, we have to get going!” Arrow said. “Weʼll try to get a few laps in today now that itʼs early, but weʼll see you tomorrow on the track!”

“Of course, Arrow. I will see you all tomorrow.”
They all walked out to the balcony.

CHAPTER 19

“You coming, Skylight?” Arrow asked as if nothing had happened.

“Sheʼll catch up, Arrow.” Darkstreak answered for her.

“Uh, okay... just get back soon, we want to get some laps in before the race tomorrow.” The three took off towards Everfree. Darkstreak and Skylight walked into the room once again.

“Oh, Skylight. what happened to your mane?” Luna asked.

“Never mind that,” Darkstreak said “Luna, I have a proposition.”

“Oh? Take a seat, both of you.” Luna said.

“Thanks,” Darkstreak said as they both sat. “Luna, I wanna make Skylight a
coach.”

“--what?” Skylight coughed out.

“Darkstreak, how is that possibly going to work?” Luna said, impatiently.

“Not of the A-Wave, obviously, of the B-Wave.” Skylight sat back down, thinking this over.

“Darkstreak, I donʼt think--”

“Just hear me out, Princess.” Darkstreak interrupted. “We all give Skylight here the short end of the stick. But truth is, sheʼs good. And she can make our B-Wave much better. Sheʼs always at the stadium as it is, and sheʼs really looking for a chance to prove herself as a leader.” Luna sat back, beginning to consider it.

“Go on...” She waved her hoof.

“Allʼs Iʼm sayinʼ is, B-Wave lost Fire Blitz, and are going to need a new set of captains. I think Skylight here being a founding member of this little team we have is more than qualified to set the newbies straight. Give them some focus. Something to aim for. If we donʼt have someone on the sidelines showing the new ones the ropes, and the new captains how to lead, then weʼre back at square one, and itʼs the blind leadinʼ the blind. I think itʼll be good for everyone.”

Luna sat quietly looking at Skylight for a moment. Skylight was speechless. Sheʼd never had anyone but Arrow vouch for her before. Nopony else really believed in her. “Alright.” Luna said. “Granted. Skylight, you are the new coach for the B-Wave.”

CHAPTER 20

Meanwhile, the other three pegasus ponies were just arriving back at Everfree Stadium. “Well, that went well.” CC said as she landed.

“What was up with Skylight?” Blitz asked.

“I have no clue,” Arrow said, landing last. “She was fine last night, as far as I know.”

“It was just Skylight being Skylight.” CC added, nervously.

“No, something happened last night, trust me, I know Skylight. She was definitely bothered about something. She doesnʼt really get mad very often, but when she does, she can be a bit childish...”

CC wanted to change the subject, but the other two seemed insistent on discussing this. “Well, whatever it was, Iʼm just glad Luna didnʼt seem to mind!” CC said through her fake smile, ‘so, Blitz! Howʼs it feel to be an A-Waver?”

Fire Blitz smiled, “It feels awesome! And Iʼm ready to practi--”

“Wait a minute.” Arrow jumped in. “It was you!” He glared at CC.

“What!? Me? What was me?” CCʼs ears went back.

“Blitz seems genuinely concerned, while youʼve been avoiding the topic since we landed, AND you were the last one to see her last night when you both left my locker room!”

CC recognized Arrowʼs behavior. This was his ʻover-protective-brother mode,ʼ and the worst part was, he wasnʼt even really Skylightʼs brother!

“What did you tell her??” He yelled.

“Hey!” A mareʼs voice came from Arrowʼs locker room. “What is going on out here?”

“Trixie!” Arrow walked back over to her. ‘sorry, I didnʼt mean to wake you.”

“Itʼs fine.” she said, rubbing her eyes. “Why are you scolding Cloud Crash?”

“I wasnʼt scolding her, I was just... well, she upset Skylight last night, which made her make a scene at the meeting, and--”

“Night Arrow, Iʼm surprised at you!” Trixie interrupted. This took Arrow, CC, and Blitz by surprise.

“Me? Why??”

“Arrow, Skylight is a grown mare. If I remember correctly, she is two years older than Cloud Crash.” Arrowʼs ears went back. He knew where this was going. Despite her tendency to show off and boast, Trixie was probably the most level-headed pony in their little group. She really knew how to bring Arrow back down to earth. “So, whatever CC did to upset Skylight is between them. But Skylight should have the good sense to still not make a scene in a professional meeting.”

Fire Blitz smiled. She loved it when Trixie came to visit between her shows. She was the only one sheʼd ever seen keep Night Arrow in check.

“Ugh, alright, alright...” Arrow sat down, “Sorry CC. Just, Skylight and I grew up together... sheʼs like a little sister to me.”

“Itʼs cool, Arrow.” CC said. She wanted to bring up the fact that she had only upset Skylight by defending Arrowʼs statement about ʻbeing on her best behavior,ʼ but she decided against it. She just didnʼt want to get yelled at again, and since tomorrow was the big race, they needed to start practicing.

“So,” Blitz jumped in, “Letʼs get warmed up and do some laps!”

“Sounds good to me.” CC walked with her towards the track.

“Oh, Arrow, can I talk to you for a second?” Trixie asked.

“Uh sure, whatʼs up?”

“Arrow, the way you got so defensive of Skylight just now, and our conversation last night. I think it may be time you go get back in touch with your family again.”

Night Arrowʼs eyes narrowed. “Iʼll do it when Iʼm ready to do it.” He responded sternly, walking away from the conversation.

“Night Arrow, I mean it!” Trixie insisted, “Youʼve obviously been using Skylight to fill that void for way too long. Iʼm sure Raindrops, Scootaloo, and your dad will be a little hurt that youʼve been gone for so long, but proud of what youʼve accomplished.” Arrow stopped. “...and Iʼm sure they miss you even more than you miss them.”

Night Arrow paused and thought about it for a moment. “Iʼll consider it. But I have to start running practice.”

He continued walking towards the track.

Arrowʼs Story: An Interlude; part vi

“Get ready, weʼre having lunch with some old friends today.” Raindrops said as she opened the door to the giant Canterlot suite.

“More like breakfast...” Scootaloo whined.

“Call it whatever you want, Scootsʼ, weʼre leaving in 10 minutes.”

Scootaloo dragged herself to the sink and washed up. “Who are we meeting up with in Canterlot? You still have friends here?”

“Yup! I grew up here, remember?” Raindrops said, fixing her mane in the mirror.

“No.” Scootaloo said with a toothbrush in her mouth.

“Yeah, I guess you wouldnʼt. You were still pretty young when we moved to Ponyville.”

“I still donʼt see why we even moved to Ponyville...” Scootaloo said, “I mean, I love my friends, and I would have never met the Crusaders if we didnʼt, but come on! Itʼs Canterlot! Why would anypony leave?”

“Haha, Canterlot isnʼt all itʼs cracked up to be, Scoots.” Raindrops smiled. “The only reason we lived here was Dadʼs job with the Wonderbolts.”

“Thatʼs crazy too!!” Scootaloo shouted, mouth full of toothpaste. “The Wonderbolts are like, LEGENDS in Ponyville, and Dad was their coach! I wonder if that will make it easier for me to get in once I get my cutie mark...”

“I donʼt know,” Raindrops smiled. “Itʼs still an air-tight organization! Dad spent all the free time he had training Nightaniel for the Wonderbolts--” She stopped; her smile fell. Scootaloo rinsed her mouth and walked over to her. Raindrops sat down on the bed.

“I donʼt really remember Nightaniel.” Scootaloo said, leaning her head on Raindropsʼ lap. Raindrops placed her hoof softly on Scootalooʼs mane.

“He was awesome.” she said her smile finding itʼs way back to her face, “With a big brother like Nightaniel, you would have had your cutie mark years ago, and probably been flying as fast as Rainbow Dash.”

Scootaloo smiled at the idea. “I still donʼt get what happened to him.” She looked up at her big sister.

Raindrops sighed, “Neither do I Scoots... Neither do I...”

CHAPTER 21

“I wonʼt let you down, Princess!” Skylight saluted enthusiastically.

“Iʼm sure you wonʼt, Skylight. This is your opportunity to prove you can handle more responsibility.”

Skylight smiled. She couldnʼt wait to tell Arrow and the rest of the Shadowbolts. “Thank you so much! And thank you too, Darkstreak!”

“No problem, Skyʼ.” Darkstreak replied.

“Please, excuse me!” Skylight half-bowed and backed out towards the balcony excitedly. “I have to go! I gotta get back to practice! Big race tomorrow, ya know!!” She turned and blasted into the sky leaving her trademark blue trail with orange swirl following behind her.

“You really think that was a good idea?” Luna turned to Darkstreak.

“Nopony believes in her. She never really had a chance to prove herself.”

Luna began putting her Shadowbolt paperwork away. “I hope youʼre right, Darkstreak.”

“Am I ever wrong?” he replied. “Hmph, now youʼre starting to sound like Arrow.” Darkstreak almost smiled at Lunaʼs remark.

a conversation between friends

“...you should tell her. Sheʼs our best friend.”

“I made a promise. I canʼt say anything.”

“This is a big deal though, Spitfire! Youʼre just gonna let them run into each other?”

“I doubt they will. Raindrops hated going to races back when her dad made her, why would she go now?”

“True... and Arrow doesnʼt really hang out in Canterlot before or after races. He hates this city.”

“Just-- donʼt mention him. Donʼt mention The Shadowbolts. Donʼt mention anything to do with racing.”

...

“Could you imagine though? ʻHey sis, I know you thought I was dead, but Iʼm actually alive, and a professional racer!ʼ...”

“Shut up, here she comes.”

Arrowʼs Story: An Inter-
CHAPTER 22

Raindrops and Scootaloo arrived at the patio of the restaurant, to see an orange pegasus pony, and a blue unicorn already sitting at one of the tables.

“Spitfire! Minuette!” She shouted.

“Rainy! Iʼm so glad you made it!” Spitfire took off her aviator sunglasses and embraced her.

“Oh my Celestia, is that little Scootaloo?” the blue unicorn smiled.

“Yup! Not so little anymore.” Raindrops said.

“Almost gonna get that cutie mark, eh kid?” Spitfire put her hoof on Scootalooʼs shoulder.

“Not soon enough...” She scoffed. Raindrops aggressively tossled Scootalooʼs mane and laughed, trying to cover up her little sisterʼs rude response.

“Minuette! Howʼve you been!” Raindrops said, changing the subject.

“Ha, I havenʼt heard THAT name in a while...” she responded.

“What? What do you mean?”

“She legally changed her name.” Spitfire said, casually putting her sunglasses back on.

“You didnʼt!” Raindrops gasped.

“I did! Nice to meet you! Iʼm Colgate! Canterlotʼs best Dentist!”

Raindrops laughed and shook her friends hoof, playing along. “Oh wow, thatʼs such a cute name! And a dentist! Congrats Minu-- I mean, Colgate!”

The three mares laughed, while Scootaloo started to nod off, bored from the gossip.

“Thanks!” Colgate smiled, “I mean, who cares what a stupid cutie mark says your special talent is, right?” This of course, caught Scootalooʼs attention.

“Thatʼs so great! Iʼm glad youʼre doing well.” Raindrops said.

“So what brings you to Canterlot?” Spitfire asked.

“Well, the other day, Scootaloo made it very apparent that she had never been to a Wonderbolts Race. . .” Raindrops said, smiling at her sister, so sheʼd jump into the conversation. Scootaloo just nodded. Raindrops reluctantly continued, “. . . so, Iʼm taking her to the opening race tomorrow!”

Spitfire choked on her soda, while Colgate had a huge smile across her face. Colgate had always enjoyed some good drama, and this was gonna be good.

“--*cough* Thatʼs-- *ack* um... thatʼs great!” Spitfire coughed out. ‘so, uh, Scootaloo! Youʼre following in your dadʼs hoofsteps, eh? Gonna be a Wonderbolt one day?”

“Iʼm not too sure.” Scoolaloo said. “Those new Shadowbolts seem pretty cool.”

“What!?” Raindrops exclaimed. “That silly project Princess Luna put together? Scootaloo, Iʼm taking you to see the Wonderbolts! This is our fatherʼs legacy! Not to mention the captain is sitting right here at the same table as us! Weʼve always been Wonderbolts fans!”

Scootaloo sat up, “Since when do you care so much about the Wonderbolts?” She said. “I come home every day and tell you about Rainbow Dash and how much she wants to be a Wonderbolt, and you never say anything! Youʼve never even MET her! Iʼve been wanting to go to a race since forever and Iʼm barely going to one now? And you havenʼt even brought up dad since he died! Weʼre living like he didnʼt even exist! What does it matter which team I like?”

Raindropsʼ face was red with embarrassment. “I-- um. Wow... haha...” she laughed nervously.

“Hey, itʼs cool Scootaloo.” Colgate said, trying to break the tension. “Spitfire here has some good friends on the Shadowbolts.”

Spitfire glared knives at her.

“You do?” Scootaloo asked, a bit confused.

“Uh, yeah, a few of us see each other off the track. Theyʼre pretty cool ponies.” Spitfire said. Raindrops just sat silently.

“Whoʼs your FAVORITE Shadowbolt, Scootaloo?” Colgate asked. If looks could kill, Spitfire would have murdered Colgate, right there at the table.

“Uh, well... Iʼve only seen pictures clipped from the newspaper that Rainbow
Dash showed me... so I donʼt really have a favorite. But Iʼm sure I will by tomorrow!”

Colgate laughed, “I am VERY sure you will by tomorrow...” she said through a big smile.

Spitfire elbowed her in the ribs.

CHAPTER 23

“Guys!!” Skylight yelled as she hit the ground running, almost tripping over her own hooves. “Guys! Night Arrow!! CC!!” Trixie was sitting on her cart, sipping a smoothie, next to the track where Arrow and the mares were racing around the track. “Oh! Trixie!! Youʼre still here! Good!” Skylight gasped. “Guess what!!”

“What is it, Skylight?” Trixie stood up.

“Luna made me a coach!!” Skylight shouted out.

Trixie smiled. ‘she did? Of the B-Wave?”

“Yup!”

“Well congratulations, Skylight!” Trixie said, putting her smoothie down.

“Thank you! I canʼt wait to start officially training them!”

“Whatʼs going on over here?” Arrow said, walking over sweaty and tired.

“Arrow!!” Skylight jumped up and down, though equally as winded. “Arrow!! Princess Luna made me a coach for the B-Wave Shadowbolts!! Iʼm gonna train them!”

“Oh, thatʼs great, Skylight!” He smiled. “You can help me with promotions to replace Fire Blitz as captain.

“Replace...? Why?” A voice came from a near the locker rooms. Everypony turned to see who was speaking when a dark blue pegasus mare with a bright pink streak through her mane approached. “Why do we need to replace her? And why is she training with the A-Wave?”

Skylightʼs excitement drained from her face.

“Treble! Uh, hi! Yeah, a lot... um, a lot happened last night.” Arrow said, as CC and Fire Blitz approached behind him.

“Apparently...” Treble said with disdain in her voice. “Hello, Fire Blitz.”

“Oh, hey Treble...” Blitz walked to greet her former colleague.

“Congratulations on the promotion. We all figured youʼd get it.”

“Heh, yeah.” Blitz said, coyly, “Well, thank you. Itʼs a little overwhelming but, itʼs been a fun morning either way.”

“Hmm.” Treble faked a smile. “Night Arrow, can I speak with you in private?” she said, not taking her eyes off Blitz.

“Uh, sure Treble--”

“Wait!” Skylight stepped in. “Iʼm the coach for the B-Wave now.” She said sternly. “Treble, Iʼll be more than happy to talk to you about anything about the Shadowbolts.”

Arrow took a few steps back. He wasnʼt used to sharing responsibility for anything, and Treble was clearly upset. Although he had his doubts about Skylight handling it, he glanced at Trixie, and she nodded at him, as if to advise that he just let Skylight handle this. “Well, Skylightʼs right she is the new coach! If you guys need anything, Iʼll be on the track!”

Treble almost protested as Arrow and Blitz flew back onto the track, but she decided against it.

“Come on, Treble, step into my office.” Skylight smiled, and patted the ground next to small tree.

Treble sat under the tree near the locker rooms with Skylight. “Heh, so now Fire Blitz is there racing on the same track as Night Arrow, and I canʼt even talk to him?”

“Treble, it isnʼt like that...” Skylight said, reassuring her. “Luna has always wanted this team to be all structured and stuff. Since Iʼm the coach of you guys now, I can try my best to help you out without bothering Arrow.”

“Oh, so now Iʼm a bother!?” Treble yelled. ʻGeeze this is hard...ʼ Skylight thought to herself, ʻI really have to pick my words carefully or sheʼs gonna punch me in the face...!ʼ “--No no no!!” Skylight said, “Itʼs just, heʼs had to make a lot of really hard decisions lately, and tomorrowʼs the big A-Wave race... So if I can help him with Shadowbolt stuff, I will!”

“Why didnʼt you guys just promote both of us?” Treble said, tears in her eyes.

ʻHmm, I didnʼt think Iʼd be on THIS side of this conversation so soon...ʼ Skylight thought. “I wasnʼt in charge of that, Treble. I was expecting a promotion too, remember?”

“And he chose CC...?” Treble asked. Skylight nodded. “Hmm...” Treble looked at the ground. After a long pause, Skylight placed her hoof on Trebleʼs shoulder.

“Look, just let us get passed tomorrowʼs race, and Iʼll talk to Arrow about maybe increasing the roster a little. Maybe we can move a few more ponies into the A- Wave.”

Treble looked up at Skylight, and narrowed her eyes. “No.” She said, Skylight removed her hoof, confused. “I quit.”

CHAPTER 24

Meanwhile, back at the cafe: “Scootaloo, the Wonderbolts are awesome though! What do you even know about this new team?” Raindrops said.

“I hear nopony knows very much about them, other than rumors...” Scootaloo said. Spitfire looked worriedly at Colgate; Colgate smirked. “I hear a few of them live in an abandoned building in the middle of the Everfree Forest!” Scootaloo continued, “And one of them has two different colored eyes, and a bright neon mane from some crazy accident she had! And--”

“Thatʼs enough!” Raindrops interrupted. “First of all, nopony can live in the Everfree Forest. If the timberwolves donʼt get you, thereʼs poison joke as far as the eye can see. Then there are manticores, and ursa majors, and all kinds of dangerous creatures in there...”

“but--!” Scootaloo tried to speak, but Raindrops continued,

“And then what kind of accident can cause a ponyʼs eyes, or mane to change colors? Iʼm sure itʼs all publicity just to get little gullible fillies like you to root for them.”

Scootaloo folded her arms, and pouted, frustrated at her sisterʼs condescending tone. “But Spitfire says she knows them!” Scootaloo said, “Are any of the rumors true?”

All eyes were on Spitfire, as she gulped her soda down nervously. “I, um--” Spitfireʼs eyes scanned the area for an escape. Something to change the subject. Anything. Since she received word that Raindrops wanted to meet for lunch, she knew it was a bad idea. She knew she wouldnʼt be able to keep the subject away from racing.

“Well, uh...” she began, her eyes switching between Scootalooʼs expecting eyes, and Colgateʼs smug smirk. “...I guess, youʼll have to see tomorrow!” Spitfire laughed nervously.

“Aww.” Scootaloo sank into her seat.

“Thatʼs enough about racing, you little traitor!” Raindrops playfully nudged her little sister. “Letʼs eat, Iʼm starving!”

CHAPTER 25

“Treble, no! Donʼt do that!” Skylight said, standing up.

“Itʼs fine, Skylight.” Treble remained seated, her eyes a bit glassy.

“We can fix this! Just give me some time!” Skylight said. “With Fire Blitz on the A- Wave, that makes you head captain of the B-Wave! You can help me bring up a co- captain! Come on, letʼs go look through their files!” Skylight nervously walked towards Arrowʼs room.

“No, stop!” Treble said. Skylight sat back down. “Iʼm done with this. I donʼt know who I was kidding...”

What?” Skylight said.

“Look at me, Skylight! Iʼm not a racer!” Treble yelled.

“What do you mean?”

“My name is Treble! Iʼm a musician! I was never as fast as any of you..! My cutie mark is even a stupid treble clef.”

“Is that what those are called...?” Skylight said, tilting her head to see Trebleʼs flank.

Treble sighed, “Yes, Skylight... theyʼre musical symbols...”

“Oh. Well I donʼt see how any of that matters!” Skylight said, raising her head high. “These little pictures on our butt donʼt control who we are! We control who we are! And if you want to be a racer, then be a racer!”

“Thatʼs the thing though, Skylight...” Treble said. “I donʼt think I even want to be a racer...”

Skylight didnʼt know what to say. “I... Treble look... I may be a coach now, but weʼre still friends! We can figure this--”

“--Just tell everyone Iʼm sorry, and good luck tomorrow.” Treble stood up and opened her wings.

“But Treble...” Skylight whimpered.

“Goodbye, Skylight.” Treble said, getting ready to fly, “You were always my favorite Shadowbolt.”

With that Treble took off out of the forest.

“Bye, Treble...” Skylight said.

CHAPTER 26

“Well it was nice catching up, but I should get back to the dental office.” Colgate said, walking away from the restaurant. “Have fun at the race tomorrow!”

“We will!” Raindrops waved. As Colgate went about her way, Spitfire approached Raindrops.

“Rainy, can I talk in private for a sec?” \

“Sure, Spitfire!”

“Sorry, Scootaloo...” Spitfire removed her sunglasses.

“Itʼs okay! I gotta go to the bathroom anyway.” Scootaloo trotted over to the back
end of the restaurant.

“Whatʼs up, Spitfire?” Raindrops asked.

Spitfire looked at the ground. “Look, Rainy...” she said. “...whatever happens tomorrow, I just want you to know that, you and I are best friends.”

“Well of course we are--!” Raindrops said.

“No wait, let me finish.” Spitfire interrupted. She sighed, and began again. “You and I have been really good friends for a very long time, and you know I wouldnʼt want to do, or say anything to jeopardize that.”

Raindrops got a concerned look on her face. “Spitfire, youʼre scaring me... whatʼs this about?”

“Iʼm sorry, Rainy...” Spitfire said. “I made a promise that I canʼt say. Nothingʼs wrong though, trust me. In fact, itʼs kind of a good thing! But youʼll have to find out for yourself tomorrow.” Spitfire put her hoof on Raindropsʼ shoulder. “Just promise me youʼll understand that I just canʼt break that promise; youʼve always known Iʼm a mare of my word.”

“Spitfire, whatever it is--”

“Promise me, Raindrops!” The yellow mare was taken aback for a moment.

“Of course! I promise.”

“Good.” Spitfire said, relieved. They embraced, and Scootaloo returned. “Have fun you two!” Spitfire said, walking away.

“Iʼll be rooting for you!” Raindrops said.

“I might not be!” Scootaloo added.

“Scoots!” Raindrops elbowed her sister.
CHAPTER 27
“Niiiiiggghhtt Aaaarrrrooowww!!!” Skylight ran to the track, crying.

“What the--?” was all he managed to say before being tackled to the ground. “Skylight!? What are you doing? Whereʼs Treble?”

“Night Arrooow!!” Skylight sobbed loudly while pinning Arrow to the ground.“Treblesaysshehasamusicsymbolonherbuttsoshemustbeamusiciansoshequitthes hadowboltsandthatwasthefirstmeetingihadandshequitimtheworstcoachinthehistoryofequ estriaaaaa!!”

“What!? Sky! Stop crying on me and let me go! Youʼre getting your tears on my face!”

*sniff* sorry...” Skylight got up, freeing Arrow.

“Whatʼs going on?” CC asked as her and Fire Blitz walked over.

“You okay, Skylight?” Blitz asked.

“Go take 5, mares. Iʼll take care of Skylight.” Arrow said. “Come on, letʼs talk in your locker room.”

*sniff* Okay...” Skylight said, and they walked over to her room.

Arrow and Skylight took a seat on her bench/bed, and Skylight explained the entire conversation to him.

“So just she quit? Just like that?” Arrow said.

“Mmhmm.” Skylight nodded.

“She blamed it on her cutie mark?”

“Mmhmm.” Skylight blew her nose.

“And... wait so, why are
you crying again?” Arrow asked

“Because that was the first meeting I ever had as a coach and it ended with her quitting the Shadowbolts!” Skylight yelled. “Noponyʼs ever quit the Shadowbolts!! Iʼve only been a coach for 20 minutes, and for the first time ever, somepony quit the Shadowbolts!!”

Arrow smiled.

“Night Arrow! Why are you smiling!? This is serious!! I think I just set the record for worst coach in all of Equestria!!”

“Sky, youʼre not a bad coach.” Arrow laughed. “It sounds to me like Treble has some things she has to work out. Some self-exploration or something. From what you said, I think you did everything you could to help her out, she just needs some time for herself.”

“You really think so?” Skylight looked up at Arrow.

“Of course!” He smiled. “Now, Skylight, I hate to be insensitive, and Iʼm super proud of Luna trusting you with more responsibility, but we have a huge race tomorrow, so we need to practice.”

Skylight smiled, and wiped the tears from her eyes. “Ppffch, you mean YOU need to practice!” she laughed.

“Heh, oh you wanna race?”

“Youʼre on, baggy eyes!”

.
CHAPTER 28

The rest of the day went relatively well for everypony. The A-Wave spent most of the day flying the track, and by the time the sun had set, everyone had retreated back to their rooms for the night.

Trixie planned on spending just two more nights in Everfree with Arrow before she continued her tour across Equestria. “So, Arrow...” she said, sitting on the blankets and pillows in the corner that made up Arrowʼs bed. “...did you give any thought about your family?”

Arrow sighed. “Trixʼ... why do you care so much about that? Iʼve gotten along just fine so far...”

“Because Night,” she approached him, “you really havenʼt. You snapped at CC earlier today, youʼre overprotective of Skylight, you work in Canterlot, but avoid spending any time there because of old memories, and youʼve been spending more and more time on that stupid water tower! No Arrow, you have NOT ʻgotten along just fine so farʼ...!”

Arrow was speechless once again.

“I care about you, Arrow...!” Trixie said, “Iʼm leaving in two days, I donʼt know for how long, and I want to make sure youʼre gonna be okay. A lot has happened these last few days; youʼve been forced to grow up practically overnight... I just donʼt want you to crumble under all the pressure...!”

There was a sense of sincerity in Trixieʼs normally cold and condescending voice. She never spoke that way to anypony but Night Arrow; he knew she was genuinely concerned, and really did care about his well-being.

“Alright.” He said, defeated. Trixieʼs eyes lit up and she smiled. “After the race tomorrow, Iʼll ask Spitfire where theyʼre living.” He looked up and forced a smile. “Iʼll look them up, you know, go visit them.”

Trixieʼs smile grew and she embraced him.

“You wanna come with me?” Arrow asked.

“To Ponyville?” Trixie said, “Uh, no... sorry Arrow, Iʼve made a few enemies there... I think itʼs best you go alone.”

Arrow laughed. “You? Enemies?” He smiled, sarcastically “I canʼt imagine why!”

Trixie laughed “Haha, shut up!” she playfully punched him in the shoulder.

“Letʼs get some sleep, Trix...” Arrow said, walking to his make-shift bed. “Iʼve got a race to win tomorrow.”

CHAPTER 29

CC was ecstatic to be the new co-captain. She had decided that this new season she had a few new resolutions for herself, most of which included her getting better acquainted with her team mates, and spending more time on the track.

Fire Blitz on the other hoof was still very nervous about tomorrow, and had a stomachache throughout the entire day. The majority of the night she spent laying
awake, eyes bloodshot, and wide opened staring at her ceiling. She hated the way her mind worked; playing every possible terrible scenario in her head. She knew she needed sleep, but she just couldnʼt relax. Eventually, exhausted from a full day of A-Wave training, she fell asleep.

Skylight still felt bad about what happened with Treble, and wondered if there was still anything she could do. Then she realized she would have to move up a new captain and co-captain for the B-Wave. Once the choices started filling her head, she immediately felt guilty for how she handled the same situation when Arrow had to make that same decision. It was at that moment she realized she really did have a lot of growing up to do, and she already did a lot of growing up over the last 24 hours.
Needless to say, this race was definitely the most stressful the team has had in quite a while, and nopony got very much actual rest.

Meanwhile, miles away, Raindrops was preoccupied with Spitfireʼs speech to her after lunch this afternoon. ʻMade a promise... canʼt say... actually a good thing...ʼ? What did she mean by all that? Should she even go to the race tomorrow? What could she possibly have to hide that was ʻactually a good thingʼ? Raindrops was terrible with surprises.

Scootaloo however, was very excited about her first official race tomorrow, and could hardly sleep. She had already decided, first thing she was gonna
do when she got there was buy a flag that said “Go Shadowbolts!” It was half rebellion against her older sister, and half trying to find her own path to lead. When Colgate told her story about changing her own destiny and name, and rebelling against her cutie mark, it got Scootaloo thinking-- maybe cutie marks werenʼt that important! She couldnʼt wait to get back to Ponyville and tell Applebloom and Sweetie Belle everything that happened today. This trip was turning out much better than sheʼd expected, and she was positive that tomorrow, it was only going to get better...!

CHAPTER 30

“Raindrops!! Raindrops wake up!!”

“Hmm...?” Raindrops squinted her eyes to see what all the commotion was about. “What...? Scoots? What time is it?”

Scootaloo was hopping up and down on the luxury suite’s bed. “It’s 7:30! Time to get up!”

“7:30...? The race isn’t until 1pm...” Raindrops said, turning her back to the little filly. “Go back to sleep...”

“But Raaaaiiiiiinnyyy....!!” Scootaloo whined. “I want to get there early to get Shadowbolt stuff!”

Raindrops sat up, “Scootaloo! You’re rooting for the Shadowbolts?”

“Yup!” Scootaloo said, assertively.

“You don’t know anything about them...!”

“I do too!!” Scootaloo argued. “I know they live in Everfree Forest! And one of them has two colored eyes, and--”

“Okay, let me rephrase that: You don’t know anything that isn’t a crazy marketing rumor!”

“It’s all true! I’m sure of it!”

Raindrops’ unfortunate hereditary baggy eyes looked the worst in the morning before she could apply her makeup, and they only added to her skeptical, and tired glare. “Name one racer.” she challenged Scootaloo.

“Huh?”

“Go ahead. If you’re such a fan of the Shadowbolts, name one of the members.”

Scootaloo thought for a moment. “Um, Black...err, Shadow... Wing-- no! Wind. Black Shadow Wind.” She said. Raindrops did not look convinced.

“Black Shadow Wind? You just made that up.”

“I did not!”

“Uuuugggggh, fine!” Raindrops gave up. “Just give me another hour of sleep, and we’ll wake up, go buy lunch, and when we get to Wonderbolts Stadium, I’ll buy you a shirt or something...” Raindrops shoved her face into the silk pillow.

“I want a Shadowbolts flag!”

“Fine Scootaloo! Just let me get some sleep!” her voice came out muffled.

Scootaloo couldn’t wait.

CHAPTER 31

Fire Blitz was speeding through the sky on her way to Wonderbolts Stadium, looking a bit more pale than her usual crimson self. “No no no... I’m late! I’m late to my first race, Arrow is gonna kill me. . . !” She arrived at the back entrance, where the athletes entered.

Once she walked through the doors, past security, she scanned the backstage hallways. The knots in her stomach and throat increased ten-fold. There, in their official blue and gold shirts, stretching and talking to one another, was the Wonderbolts A-Wave, closer than they’d ever been, Spitfire, Soarin, Echo, Misty... they were all there.

They never showed up to the B-Wave races, so Blitz never really met any of them. She’d seen them on the track before, racing against Arrow and Skylight, but never was she this close! Never was she in the same room as them!

“Don’t tell me you’re starstruck over the competition.” A familiar voice said, breaking Blitz’s trance.

“Huh? Oh, CC! You scared me.”

“Haha, I recognize that look, Blitz. I was the same way when we initially founded this little racing organization. Come on, I’ll introduce you to them.”

“What!? No, it’s alright, Arrow’s gonna be mad... I mean, I’m already late--”

“Oh calm down, Fire Blitz. Night Arrow said 8am specifically for you to meet the other team.”

“Wait, what?” Blitz said, resisting CC pushing her towards the Wonderbolts.

“We all saw how nervous you were yesterday, and Arrow thought it was a good idea since you and I will be racing together, that we get here early to talk to the Wonderbolts for a bit. Show you they’re just ordinary ponies like you and me!”

Blitz was speechless.

“Don’t be so nervous, Fire Blitz! They’re all very nice!”

“Well, if it isn’t the Wonderbolt-Wanna-be’s...!” A stallion’s voice called out.

Fire Blitz and CC looked across the room at a light blue pegasus with a dark blue mane. “Ugh... well, most of them are very nice...”

Meanwhile, in the visitor’s room, Night Arrow and Skylight were loosening up and snacking on plain grass for breakfast as to not slow them down.

“Oooh, I’m so excited! We haven’t been in a race for what feels like yeeeeaaaaarrrs!” Skylight said, unable to sit still.

“It’s been three months, Sky’.” Arrow said, dryly.

“I know! But it still feels like years! I can’t wait to get on that track!”

“We don’t go on for a few hours, Sky’. Just relax a bit. Go talk to a few of the other racers.”

“Ppffch! Not the Blue-sers!”

“The what?” Arrow laughed.

“The Blue-sers! You know, blue and losers put together? Cuz’ the Wonderbolts wear blue...”

“I get it.” Arrow scoffed, cracking a smile. “Very clever. But I thought you were cool with the Wonderbolts? You and Echo are pretty close, right?”

“Yeah! But I want us to have a cool rivalry! Like any good teams have! I want us to hate each other!”

“Ha, good luck with that, you get along with everypony.” Arrow said, sitting down.

“No! I want to hate their guts! And for them to hate mine!! ... well, except Echo. She’s awesome! ... oh, and her sister Misty is so nice, nopony can hate her... Oh, and Spitfire is one of your only good friends, so that’s out of the question...”

“Well there goes that idea...” Arrow laughed.

“No no, I know somepony on the Blue-sers who can use a real attitude adjustment...” Skylight narrowed her eyes.

Arrow stretched his wings. “If you’re talking about the only one left on the A-Wave, you’ll get no argument from me...”

* * *

“Soarin’. . .” CC muttered.

“The one and only.” he smiled pompously. “I see you knock-offs have recruited a new filly.” Soarin said.

CC sighed, “Yes, she’s a promotion from the B-Wave; Soarin, this is Fire Blitz.”

“Hey, nice to meet--” Blitz began.

“Yeah, I heard about you.” Soarin interrupted. “Do you guys even have an age requirement?” He said, raising an eyebrow. “Have you graduated from flight school, little filly?”

Blitz was taken aback by the stallion’s blatant rudeness. “Yeah! Of course I have! I was the captain of the B--”

“A simple yes or no would have been okay.” Soarin replied, already walking away.

Fire Blitz’s nervousness turned into pure hatred for this complete jerk.

“Ugh, don’t be such a jerk, Soarin.” CC said. “At least try to show some sportsmanship, would you?”

Soarin sighed, “Only cuz it’s you, Cloudy.” He walked back over to the two mares. “Well, welcome to the big leagues, kid. Try to keep up.” Soarin said, still condescending. “You want a few pointers for your first race?”

Fire Blitz clenched her teeth. “Not from you, Blunderbolt.”

Soarin cracked a smile. “Heh, I’m startin’ to like you, kid.”

“CC is that you? Come over here a second!” A mare’s voice came from the other side of the stadium. “We want to ask you something!”

CC glanced over toward the other two pegasus mares. “Oh hey! Be there in a second!” She pulled Blitz aside for a moment. “Look, just give him a chance,” She whispered, “he’s kinda tough to get used to, but he’s a great guy when you get to know him!”

Fire Blitz aggressively whispered back “What!? You’re not gonna leave me with this jerk, are you!?”

“Just hear him out, and meet me over there by the vending machine when you’re done. I’ll introduce you to two other Wonderbolt mares. Nicest sister’s you’ll ever meet!”

“Ugh, fine.” Fire Blitz said, walking back over to Soarin.

“Oh, and Cloudy?” Soarin called over to CC. “It’s been a while; call me some time.” He smiled.

CC looked down and blushed.

“So, I hear it’s your first race, little filly.” Soarin said.

“It’s my first A-Wave race.” Fire Blitz corrected him. “And its Fire Blitz.”

“Whoa now, no need to get hostile ‘Fire Blitz’,” He smiled. “Just want to give you a couple of pointers for your first big A-Wave race.”

“Why would you want to help me?” Blitz said impatiently.

“Well I’m not racing you.” Soarin said, “You and Cloudy are goin’ up against the ‘ol Fleetfoot Twins. Beside, like old Cloudy said, I’m tryin’ to show some ...sportsmanship.”

Blitz sighed. “Fine, I guess that makes sense.”

“Great.” Soarin said. “First off, you know the biggest difference between an A-Wave race and a B-Wave race?”

“There’s way more ponies at an A-Wave race?” Blitz said dryly.

“Heh, funny.” Soarin said. “And true, but no.” He sat down. “The big difference is instead of racing 150 laps, we race an even 200. And instead of those three pit-stops you get in a B-Wave race, you only get two today.”

Fire Blitz rolled her eyes. “Yeah, I know all this. Can you get to the point?”

“Alright, alright, I get it. You think you’re all big and bad ‘cause your green-haired leader brought you up to the big leagues.” He scoffed. “But you wanna show him just how big and bad you are?”

That caught Fire Blitz’s attention. “I’m listening...”

“Good...” Soarin said, “Now listen up, this’ll really impress old’ baggy-eyes...”

CHAPTER 32

“Knock knock...” A mare’s voice came from just outside the visitor’s door.

“Whooooo is iiiiiit??” Skylight asked cheerily while in some obscure, yoga-like pose on the floor.

“It’s me, Spitfire.”

“Oh Spitfire! Come in!” Skylight said, not moving from her position on the floor.

“Hey guys! Ready for today?” Spitfire said, opening the door.

“Hey Spitfire!” Arrow said, finally getting up from the couch. They hugged with their wings.

“Oh, hey! Mr. Captain!”

“Haha, oh, you heard?” Arrow said, cracking a smile.

“You’ve been the talk around the Wonderbolts all day! Old Darkstreak finally hung up the goggles, eh?” Spitfire playfully elbowed Arrow in the chest.

“Haha, hardly. I feel like I’ve seen MORE of him since he supposedly retired! But I’m handling things now.”

“If you call having a nervous breakdown handling things!” Skylight chimed in, now in a more complicated position on the floor.

Spitfire knelt down. “That.. doesn’t look at all comfortable....” she lifted her sunglasses, “...or possible.”

“It’s actually--- *hhngh* pretty relaxing!” Skylight coughed out.

“I’m sure it is.” Spitfire stood back up.

Arrow rolled his eyes. “So, Spitfire, what brings you to my humble domain?”

“Uh, well... Arrow... I was hoping to talk to you about something in private...”

“Ah, captain to captain, eh?” Arrow joked.

“Heh, yeah... sorta.” Spitfire said nervously.

“No problem! Skylight, if you don’t mind. . .”

“Oh, I don’t! *nngghh* Go ahead.” Skylight said. “I’m just doing my stretches, you know... loosening up... for the big... *gghhrr--race. Just giving the old wings a stretch, and... the spleen, apparently...”

“You can’t get out of that position, can you?” Arrow asked, placing his hoof on his face.

“Ha! Can’t get out of this position!? HAHA!! Of course-- *grunt* --I can!!” Skylight laughed nervously, at this point in a tightly coiled ball. “I.. haha... I can totally get out of... um...”

“Hey Spitfire, open the door, would ya?” Arrow said, walking behind Skylight.

“Sure.” Spitfire complied.

Arrow gently pushed the now ball-shaped Skylight, rolling her out the door.
“Wait wait waitwait!!” Her voice trailed off as she rolled further from the room.

Arrow yelled, “Find CC! She’ll help you!” and closed the door.

Spitfire laughed, “You guys really do just have fun all the time, don’t you?”

“We try.” Arrow sat back down. “Skylight makes that pretty easy. She makes everything about racing pretty fun.”

“It’s too bad we don’t have room for goofballs on our team.” Spitfire sat down on the other couch. “It’s always all business... But I suppose if your organization ever gets as big as The Wonderbolts, it’ll be a lot less fun and games.”

“Well, that’ll be the day I quit, Spitfire.” Arrow said, leaning back in his seat. “If you’re not having fun, then what’s the point?”

Spitfire just smiled. Sometimes she was a little envious of how laid back The Shadowbolts seemed to be. Especially Arrow. It’s like nothing ever got him down.

“Arrow, I need to tell you something...” Spitfire said, taking her glasses off once again...

* * *

After finishing up her conversation with Soarin, Fire Blitz saw CC speaking with the two pegasus mares by the soda machine. One had a yellow coat and aquamarine colored mane, while the other was a baby blue with a white mane. Fire Blitz quickly walked over to CC and nudged her. “Way to ditch me, CC! What was THAT all about!?” Blitz said, pulling her aside as she approached her.

“Uh, excuse me a moment, girls.” CC said embarrassed as Fire Blitz pulled her away by the wing. “It was just Soarin, Fire Blitz. Look, I know he can be a bit much initially, but he really is an outstandingly fast, and extremely focused flyer! I can assure you, any information he gave you is invaluable!”

“Are you sure?” Blitz asked, “Because what he told me to do was--”

“--You know, Soarin and your captain Night Arrow have an interesting little rivalry!” The yellow mare added, eavesdropping on their conversation. “I don’t really know why, but they kind of hate each other, and it’s rather adorable. Needless to say Soarin isn’t exactly thrilled to see The Shadowbolts becoming so successful.”

“You don’t say...” Fire Blitz muttered, “Oh, and by the way, Cloudy, what’s going on between YOU and that jerk?”

CC blushed. “We also have kind of a history...” The two Wonderbolt mares both smiled. CC avoided eye contact with Blitz. “But that’s all in the past... uhh,” she looked up at the yellow and blue twins. “Now, let’s not be rude, Fire Blitz! Meet our competition for today! These are The Fleetfoot Twins!” She said, nudging Fire Blitz back toward the two mares.

*click, click* The white-maned twin clicked her back teeth, her ears still twitching. “And who’s that with you, CC?” The light blue mare with the white mane said excitedly. She turned around, still staring into what seemed like the space above Blitz’s head; her ears twitching constantly.

“This is our newest member of the A-Wave! Her name is Fire Blitz.” CC said, pushing her forward. “Blitz, these are the Fleetfoot twins, Misty and Echo!”

“Oh, uh, Nice to meet you.” Blitz put her hoof out politely. Misty, the yellow mare, returned the gesture, while Echo just smiled.

“Hello Fire Blitz, it’s a pleasure, I’m Misty Fleetfoot.” The yellow mare said.

“It’s nice to meet you, Fire Blitz!” The light blue mare said, ears still twitching in all directions. “I’m Echo!”

“Wow, so... you’re really blind!” Blitz said, staring at Echo’s eyes. The light blue color covered both her irises and pupils, like two big bowls of milk.

“Blitz!” CC elbowed her aggressively.

“Well, isn’t she delightfully insightful?” Misty smiled, while Echo just laughed, still seemingly staring blankly across the room.

“I’m so sorry, girls, Blitz can be somewhat blunt in her observations.” CC said.

“It’s okay! I get it all the time!” Echo said.

“It’s just... I never believed it!” Blitz said, “I’ve seen you race across the track! It’s amazing! It’s like you can see the whole track at once! And when I heard you were blind!! I just... I thought, there’s no way!”

CC was turning red with embarrassment, which is impressive for a blue mare to do.

“Yup! Been blind since I was a filly! Since then, I learned to use this sound--” *click click* “--to check my surroundings! It’s called echolocation.” Echo said.

“Like a bat...” Blitz said, now focusing on Echo’s constantly shifting ears.

“Exactly!” Echo smiled.

“Well, CC. While Fire Blitz gets a science lesson from Echo, why don’t you and I head over to the home team lounge room.” Misty said, leading CC to the other side of the stadium. “I hear a congratulations is in order, Ms. Co-Captain!”

CHAPTER 33

Meanwhile, back in the royal suite, *Knock Knock Knock*

“Uuuuuugggghhh....” Raindrops moaned, her face still shoved into the pillow.

“I’ll get it!” Scootaloo jumped out of bed and ran to the door.

“Hello Ms. Scootaloo,” Raindrops heard a stallion’s voice came from the hallway. “Is your sister available?”

“Silver Shield!” Scootaloo cheered “Yeah! Come on in!” she pulled him into the room.

Raindrops’ tired, bloodshot eyes shot open. “Scootaloo! No! Wait!” She yelled, and immediately threw the blankets over her head. She was nowhere near ready to be seen by strangers. No makeup, morning breath, bed-mane, and she really had to pee.

“Raindrops?” Scootaloo said, standing next to the royal guard in the middle of the suite staring at a large lump under the blankets of her sister’s bed. “Rainy, Silver Shield is here.” She said.

“Oh is he, now?” Raindrops replied sarcastically.

“I’m so sorry Ms. Raindrops.” Silver Shield backed away towards the door. “I can leave for a moment if you’re not ready. I just wanted a word with--”

“How about I go to you, Silver Shield?” Raindrops said, annoyed.
“Of course, Miss.” He said, and headed to the door. “I’ll be at the doors of the Royal Throne Room. Take your time.” He exited the room.

Raindrops emerged from her blankets with her unfortunate family bags under her eyes, prominent as ever.

“Well that was rude.” Scootaloo said, crossing her arms.
Raindrops clenched her teeth, “I’m gonna pee, then come out and kick your plot, Scoots!” She said, and walked into the suite’s bathroom.

Scootaloo stayed in the middle of the room, confused. “What!?” She yelled through the bathroom door. “Why am I in trouble!? You were the one that was rude!!”

CHAPTER 34

Soarin was munching on some chips near the window of the main room, overlooking the track, shifting his focus from the clouds to his own reflection, looking right back at himself.

“Lookin’ good Co-Captain.” He smiled to himself.

“Not after any more of those chips...” A voice said from under the table.

“What the--? Who is that!?”

Skylight crawled out from under the table, and stood up next to Soarin.

“None other than Skylight! Shadowbolt Extraordinaire!!” She said.

“Oh, it’s just Night Arrow’s lackey.” Soarin scoffed. “What were you doing under a table?”

“What? Night Arrow’s--? Pff!!” Skylight was insulted. “I am NOT just a lackey! I’m the fastest, bestest racer our team has! ...and I was just getting through with some early morning stretches...”

“Ha! Fastest racer on your ENTIRE team? Haha, your team of what? Four? That’s one heck of an accomplishment, Neon Brite!” Soarin smiled condescendingly.

Skylight clenched her teeth.

“Oh, by the way, congrats on the getting promoted to Co-Captai--- Oh, wait a minute. That wasn’t you! That was small, blue, and geeky. Not weird, green, and freaky. My bad, I always get you two confused.” He tossed a few more chips into his mouth.

“Oh yeah!? Well-- Um...” That one genuinely hurt. Skylight’s eyes began to water. There was obviously no talking to this jerk. “I-- I have to go. Have a good race...” She whimpered out.

“Bye Skylie!” Soarin yelled out. “Oh, and tell your fearless leader to come out of the visitor’s closet!” He sneered. “I want a word with him...”

* * *

“So... wait. I don’t understand, Spitfire... You don’t want me to be upset at you... for something you haven’t done... but-- can’t tell me, what you’re... not gonna do?” Arrow asked.

“Basically...” Spitfire said. “Geeze... this was easier explaining to Rain--” She caught herself. “uhhh Rain....bow Dash! Yeah, Rainbow Dash. I um.. I had a similar situation happen with some friend who’s trying out for Wonderbolts next season...! The uh, Ponyville division! She was helping with the rainfall into Cloudsdale... and... I’m over explaining this...” She sighed. “You talk now.”

Arrow just stared at her for a moment. “Spitfire, just tell me what’s going on.”

Spitfire sighed again. The race was in a few hours. What’s the harm of him knowing? On one hoof, he would be better prepared to approach her. He would know what he was going to say, and he’d already know everything Spitfire could tell him about Raindrops. On the other hoof, he might be upset that she didn’t tell him sooner... or he may be so preoccupied he would lose his focus on the race and make a fool of himself.

No.

No, Arrow is more professional than that.

He could definitely handle this.

She was going to tell him.

“Okay.” Spitfire said. “Just, don’t say anything until I’m completely done, okay?”

Arrow nodded.

“Okay.” Spitfire said again. “So, I got a letter a few weeks ago--”

At that moment the door suddenly creaked open. In the doorway was a glassy-eyed Skylight, on the verge of breaking down.

“Skylight!” Arrow sat up. “What happened??”

“*sniff* Nothing, Arrow.” She said. “I don’t need you solving my problems.” She walked over to the other side of the room. “I’m a coach now, and I can handle things myself.”

After a moment of thought, Arrow and Spitfire both looked at one another and came to the same conclusion: “Soarin.” They said in unison.

Night Arrow stormed out of the visitor’s room, “Soarin!” he called angrily. Spitfire trailed behind.

“Arrow, I’m so sorry about Soarin...” Spitfire said, barely keeping up with him. “You know how he can get...”

“What the hell, man?” Arrow scowled as he approached the blue pegasus stallion.

“Oh, hey buddy!” Soarin said with fake sincerity. “Haven’t seen you around much lately Mr. Captain! How’s it feel?”

“Don’t hey buddy me! What the hell did you tell Skylight?” Arrow got into his face.

Soarin just smiled. “Who me? Nothing, man! Just congratulated her on the whole Co-Captain thing. Then she stormed off all weird.” He said.

“She didn’t make Co-Captain...” Arrow said slowly through his teeth.

“What? She didn’t?” Soarin put his hoof on his chest dramatically. “Oh well that’s too bad... oh, and now her reaction makes a whole lot more sense--”

“Soarin, you gotta stop being such a bully, and start having some good sportsmanship.” Spitfire warned. At this point the rest of both A-Waves, Shadowbolts and Wonderbolts alike, started to approach the scene, making a circle around Night Arrow and Soarin.

“A bully? Me?” Soarin said. “Now that doesn’t sound quite like me, if I do say so myself... But just a side note, one captain to another,” he turned to Arrow once again, “You gotta man-up your team Nighty’. A little misunderstanding and your star flyer runs away with her tail between her legs? Now that right there, doesn’t sound like A-Wave material to me...”

At this point, Skylight dragged her hooves out of the visitor’s room, seeing the small mob formed around Arrow and Soarin.

Soarin made eye contact with her across the room and smiled. “That sounds to me like your top flyers... need to grow up.” he winked at Skylight without Arrow noticing.

Skylight looked down at the ground.

“But then again, what do I know?” Soarin laughed, taking a few steps from Arrow. “I’ve only been leading an all star flying team since your Princess and Founder was just an old pony-tale.”

Arrow slammed his hooves on the ground. “Enough!!” he yelled. “Enough of your condescending mind games, Soarin! You stay the buck away from my team, do you hear me?” Arrow spread his wings, intimidatingly. “And you stop cantering around here like you’re so much better than everypony. I’m sick of it! We are an organization of racers. Just as official, and established, and professional as the Wonderbolts--”

“Now that’s where you’re wrong, Nighty’.” Soarin cut him off, his eyes narrowed. “You guys aren’t professional; you’re a side project. You’re what happens when new royalty gets bored. Pretty soon, Princess Cadance is gonna want her own racing team. Then, next thing you know, racing teams are gonna be popping up all across Equestria, and where does that leave the Wonderbolts?” He turned to his team. “Huh!? Answer me! Where does that leave us!?” His question was met with silence. He turned back to Arrow. “The Wonderbolts are a professional organization that most pegasus ponies could only DREAM of getting into. Then you guys come, and show up outta nowhere? Buncha’ hicks living off dirt and berries in the forest? Now you’re rubbing elbows with Canterlot royalty? ... heh, You’ve cheapened this sport, Night Arrow.” Soarin turned to the crowd again. “And you’ve all let this happen.”

Night Arrow glared silently at him.

“We are The Canterlot Royal Wonderbolts; Fastest Flyers in Equestria!”
Soarin stated proudly, his chin up in victory.

He then lowered his head, and spoke softly into Night Arrow’s ear: “You guys, are just villains.”

The room was dead quiet.

Soarin walked away, shoving CC and Blitz on his way out of the circle, “See you on the track.”

CHAPTER 35

“I’ll go talk to him.” Spitfire said to Arrow.

“No.” he stopped her with his wing. “Don’t worry about it.”

Spitfire nodded. “It’s not true, you know.” she said. “You guys aren’t villains.”

“I know.” Arrow said, turning toward his A-Wave team mates who were all huddled together, talking, no doubt about what just happened. “I just have to go convince them of that.” He walked towards his team.

Spitfire paused a moment, then walked towards her own team, on the other side of the room.

At this point, Fire Blitz was as confused as ever. Why did Soarin give her that ridiculous advice if he was just gonna go out and trash talk the entire team like that? If that’s how he really felt about The Shadowbolts, then why help her at all?

“Team meeting in the visitor’s room.” Arrow announced as he walked past his team mates.

CC and Skylight slowly dragged behind him.

Fire Blitz just glared across the room at The Wonderbolts’ lounge room. ‘What are you playing at, Soarin?’ she thought. ‘And what does CC even see in you?’

“That means you too, Fire Blitz.” Arrow said sternly, sticking his head out of the visitor’s lounge room.

Blitz reluctantly turned around and headed inside. Once everyone was settled inside, Arrow turned to Fire Blitz. “So, you get to meet the rest of The Wonderbolts?”

“Yeah.”

“What did you think?”

“Soarin’s an as--”

“--NOT about Soarin, Fire Blitz.” Arrow interjected. “Did you meet Misty and Echo?”

“She met them.” CC chimed in.

“Well, what did you think?” Arrow said.

“They’re nice, I guess.” Blitz said.

The room was silent for a moment.

“Arrow?” Skylight finally said.

“Yeah, Sky’?”

“Are we really hicks?” She asked.

“--No, we’re villains.” Fire Blitz scoffed.

“Stop it, Blitz.” Arrow said. “We’re not hicks, or villains. We’re not immature, or unprofessional. Don’t let Soarin’ get into your heads. You’re all better than that.”

CC raised her hoof, “But he does have a valid point...”

“No, he doesn’t.” Night Arrow said sternly. “He’s manipulative, egotistic, arrogant, and mean. He’s just trying to break our spirits before the race; he want’s us to lose our cool out there, guys. Now don’t let him win!”

Skylight was staring at the floor the entire time they were in the room.

CC was thinking hard about what Soarin had said about the repercussions of Luna forming the Shadowbolts. Was this just the beginning of the downfall of pegasus racing?

Fire Blitz was angry. Angrier than usual. She hated being manipulated. Her stomach hurt more than when she was nervous, and her mind was racing back and forth. Did Soarin really hate all of The Shadowbolts? Or was he just trying to get under Arrow’s skin? He certainly cares for CC, or he wouldn’t have asked her to a movie. His advice seemed ridiculous, but CC still seems to trust him--

“We’re not villains, guys.” Arrow said again, breaking Blitz’s concentration. “Come on, we’re owned by a princess!”

“A princess that at one point wanted to make the night last forever.” Blitz said.

“Blitz-- That wasn’t really her!” Arrow said, frustrated. “You’ve all met Luna! You know she’s a good pony. She only wants what’s best for us!”

“But Night Arrow,” CC said. “What if Soarin is right?” Arrow rolled his eyes, but let her finish this time. “What if we are just a side project? I mean... I know exactly what he’s talking about, I grew up dreaming of being a Wonderbolt! These guys were celebrities in all of Equestria! The training camp alone is nearly impossible to get accepted into, and once you get to that level, it’s painstakingly difficult to pass all the tests. It’s a very exclusive team! And Princess Luna just walks up to us one day and asks us if we want to join her brand new team? We’re just the product of dumb luck!”

“Even so, CC.” Arrow said. “Even if you’re right. We go out there and race on the same track as ponies you grew up thinking were gods.” He stood up. “I’m here to tell you guys-- to tell everypony, they’re NOT. Soarin has been a Wonderbolt for years! And each and every day, he walks through Canterlot like he owns the place. The problem with being treated like a god every day, is eventually, the weak are foolish enough to believe it.” He turned to CC, “Growing up, Skylight and I had the same dream everypony fortunate enough to be born with wings has: to be a member of The Fastest Flyers in Equestria. And Princess Luna gave us the opportunity to do even BETTER than that.”

“Better than the fastest?” Blitz said.

“Much better.” Arrow smiled at her. “You know how many times I’ve beaten Soarin on the track?”

“You keep track of that?” Blitz asked.

“No,” he lied, “but I can tell you one thing: it’s not zero!” Arrow said. “Which means, on several occasions, I’ve been faster than ‘The Fastest Flyers in Equestria’...”

Skylight raised her head.

“And CC!” Arrow said. “You remember the first day Luna approached us?” CC looked him in the eyes. “You complained that you spent every day sitting in this very stadium while The Wonderbolts practiced, and not ONCE did they come up to you, right?” CC nodded. “Now look at us. Before every race? What do we do?”

“We put our flight suits on, and take pictures and sign autographs with fans.” CC said.

“Every. Single. Race.” Arrow said. “Yeah, we might not be as exclusive, and fancy as The Wonderbolts. But we are a group of pegasus ponies that can give little fillies and colts another team to look up to. We are attainable. And we are NOT gods. Sometimes we lose, but sometimes, we win. We’re just like everyone else.”

Skylight smiled.

“Now, Everfree Forest Shadowbolts, I want to do something a little different for this first race of the season.” Arrow said. “Instead of racing around the track for the hours before the race, let’s just go grab a light lunch, have a good time, and relax.”

The three mares smiled, even Fire Blitz.

“I’ll order some food to this room, we can get our minds off this morning, and just, hang out. Deal?” Arrow said.

“Deal.” CC smiled.

“Sounds good.” Blitz agreed, still slightly reluctant.

“Deal!” Skylight jumped up.

“There we go! That’s the team I love to race with!” Night Arrow said. “I’ll be back, I’ll go order that food!”

As the Shadowbolts walked into the visitor’s room, the rest of the Wonderbolts were already inside theirs.

When Spitfire walked in she saw Soarin sprawled out, relaxing on one couch, and the Fleetfoot twins sitting, bored on the other couch.

“Unbelievable.” Spitfire said.

The room was quiet.

“Soarin, look what you’ve done. Everyone was having a great time, and you go off and ruin it.”

“You should be thanking me.” Soarin said. “I have no idea why you guys feel you should cozy up all close to those frauds.”

“This was Fire Blitz’s first A-Wave race, you know that?” Spitfire continued her lecture. “And now, you’ve made us look like jerks!”

“Good!” Soarin sat up, “Maybe she’ll quit then! One less amateur we have to worry about, then maybe, with any luck, one less team we have to worry about.”

“One less team?” Spitfire said. “Do you hear yourself? You really want to go back to scrimmage races?? Just Wonderbolt against Wonderbolt?”

“Ah, the good old days...” Soarin smiled sarcastically.

“You’re ridiculous.” Spitfire said. She turned to the twins, “Did either of you mares get the chance to speak with Fire Blitz?”

“I did.” Echo said.

“She seemed very impressed with Echo.” Misty said.

“She didn’t even believe I was really blind.” Echo said, smiling.

“See? Impressed! That’s what she should be! We’re the Wonderbolts, and we own this industry.” Soarin said.

“The Shadowbolts are a team too, Soarin.” Spitfire said through her teeth. “We have to respect them.”

“You go ahead and hand your respect out to anyone you please.” Soarin said. “But growing up, I was taught respect is earned, not just given.”

“Arrow has kicked your butt on that track more times than I can count.”

“They race dirty and you know it!” Soarin snapped.
Unflinching, Spitfire countered, “They do not. Besides, breaking the spirits of the entire team before the race isn’t playing dirty?”

Soarin rolled his eyes. “I’ll say it again, if a few harsh realities takes his team down before they even hit the track, they’ve got to grow up.”

Spitfire just rolled her eyes and left the room. There was no talking to Soarin. And worst of all, this all went down just as she decided to tell Arrow about Raindrops.

“Oh well.” She sighed, “I guess he’s finding out the hard way.”

CHAPTER 36

A nice shower and a few dabs of concealer later, Raindrops walked with her little sister to meet Silver Shield by the doors of the Royal Throne Room.

“...It doesn’t matter, Scootaloo,” Rainy was lecturing her sister. “you don’t just let random ponies into our room when I’m still trying to sleep.”

“But Silver Shield isn’t random, he’s the one who escorted us to the castle to begin with, remember?” Scootaloo protested.
Raindrops sighed. “Nevermind, Scoots.” she gave up as they approached the large doors.

“Miss Raindrops, I am once again terribly sorry about this morning. I had no idea--”

“It’s fine, Silver Shield.” she said. “Scootaloo shouldn’t have just invited you in like that.”

“But--!” Scootaloo tried to chime in.

“Hush.” Raindrops said sternly. “Now, what was it you wanted to meet with me about?”

“I was just going to inform you that I will be your personal escort all day today for you and young Scootaloo’s day at Wonderbolts Stadium.” He said proudly. “As per request of Princess Celestia.”

“Really!?” Scootaloo said excitedly.

“What? No, that’s ridiculous.” Raindrops said. “We’re not going to sit in the stands next to a Royal Guard on our beckoned call. We don’t need to be taken care of.”

“Aww...” Scootaloo whined.

“Of course not, that would be very ridiculous, Ms. Raindrops.” Silver Shield said. “I can’t just stand near you in the regular stands, it would be distracting.”

“Thank you.” Raindrops nodded, about to walk away.

“No no, the Princess has arranged for you to have box seats to the race.”

“What!?” the sisters exclaimed in unison.

“Awesome!” Scootaloo said.

“No!” Raindrops said. “There is no way. No way!” she paced.

“But Miss Raindrops--” Silver Shield said.

“Unbelievable!” She continued. “Still getting special treatment! After all these years!”

“Rainy...” Scootaloo tugged at her sister’s mane.

“No, Scootaloo!” she said. “We’re not just gonna live like royalty here! We’re gonna sit in the seats we bought with our own money, and buy souvenirs like everypony else, and buy stadium food like everypony else, and have a regular good time like everypony else!!” She turned to Silver Shield. “Now tell Celestia thanks, but no thanks! But I’ve got it! And just leave me and my sister alone!” She said, and stormed away from the armored stallion.

Scootaloo just stood there, staring at her sister as she walked towards the exit of the castle. “Raindrops stop it!” She yelled, assertively.

Raindrops stopped, confused. Scootaloo trotted over to her sister.

“Just... stop acting like a jerk!” she said.

Raindrops was dumbfounded at the accusation. “Excuse me--?” Was all she could say in the face of a very angry little filly.
“This trip is supposed to be fun!” Scootaloo said. “It’s my very first race, and it feels like everypony is trying to make it be super awesome, but you keep just trying to make it lame! Why?”

“Scootaloo, listen,” Raindrops kneeled down, “This silver-spooned, royalty life isn’t what it’s all cracked up to be. I’m sure it looks great, and fun, but it’s not. Trust me, I’ve lived it--”

“Exactly!” Scootaloo yelled. “You’ve lived it! I didn’t! I was too young! I get it, Rainy. You like Ponyville. You like working, and you like using your own money. But we’re on vacation! And even though you want to keep living like dad didn’t exist, and wasn’t the most important pony the Wonderbolts ever had... well, I don’t.” she said. “And he was my dad too! So if the Princess wants to let me stay in a royal suite, then I’m gonna take it! And if she wants me to experience my very first race in a box seat, then why would I say no?”

Raindrops was silent. Scootaloo continued.

“We’re only here in Canterlot for one more night. Then it’s back to our little house in Ponyville, and you’re back to working at your job, and spending your bits. So I want to make the best of it! Just for once, when I get back, I want to be the one telling Sweetie Belle and Applebloom a really cool adventure that I had with my sister.”

That made Raindrops smile; Scootaloo stopped yelling, her eyes became glassy. “They always have stories about their sisters talking to Princess Celestia, and fighting evil, and traveling all over Equestria... Rarity did this... Applejack did that... but when we get back tomorrow, I wanna go straight to the clubhouse, sit down in front of them and tell them, Me and my big sister Raindrops had the best time this weekend...”

Raindrops was speechless. She was so busy making sure everyone in Canterlot knew she was doing well without the help of her father’s fame and wealth, that she lost track of making sure Scootaloo had a good time. Her pride had made her selfish.

“I’m... I’m so sorry, Scoots...” she said, defeated. “We’ll sit wherever you want to today.”

Scootaloo’s eyes lit up. “Really!?” She exclaimed.

Raindrops nodded.

“Oh, thank you!” Scootaloo embraced her big sister. “Silver Shield!” the little filly yelled, running back to him. “We’re ready!”

Silver Shield smiled. “Of course, ladies.” he said, and escorted them to the cab waiting for them outside.

CHAPTER 37

*Yaaaawwn* Trixie stretched and surveyed her surroundings, remembering where she was. Being a traveling magician pony had made the first thought in her head every morning ‘where am I?’ followed immediately by ‘where can I get coffee?’

When she awoke, she discovered it wasn’t the familiar wooden interior of her cart, it was the concrete and metal interior of the Everfree Forest Stadium Home Team Locker Room; also known as, Night Arrow’s place.

“Arrow?” She called.

No answer.

“Night? Where are you...?” She noticed the bright yellow note attached to Night Arrow’s coffee maker.

Hey Trix!

I didn’t want to wake you up since I had to be in Canterlot so early to meet with the team before the race. I know you usually get up about nine, so I scheduled one of Luna’s royal guards to pick you up from here at ten, and bring you to Canterlot for you to walk around a bit before the race.

Oh, and surprise: I set it up with Princess Luna that you’ll get box seats! Since you’re never in town for my races, I wanted this one to be a memorable one.

Since I’ll be busy until after the race, I’ll just assume you wish me luck, and even if you don’t, I snuck a lucky pre-race kiss this morning before I left!

Love you,
N.Arrow

“Such a dork.” Trixie smiled, placing her hoof on her cheek. She looked at the time on Arrow’s dusty old clock on the wall. “Hmm, 9 on the dot. I guess I have an hour to shower and get ready.”

* * *

The Wonderbolts spent the next few hours practicing on the track, while The Shadowbolts had some hay and salads delivered to the visitor’s room, lightening up the mood, and helping them form a tighter bond.

“...So I spent the entire day talking to Zecora about oranges! I just couldn’t get her to drop the whole rhyme thing!” Skylight finished her story, making everypony laugh.

Just then, an aggressive knock was heard from the door.

“I swear to Celestia you ponies better not be relaxing on the couch eating hay in there!” A deep stallion’s voice was heard from just outside.

“Is that--” Blitz began

“It’s Darkstreak.” Arrow said, getting up and heading to the door. “I’ll be right back...” He smiled, and walked out of the room, closing the door behind him. He was greeted by a very big, and very angry gray pegasus stallion.

“What in Equestria are you doing in the visitor’s room half an hour before doors open to the public!?” Darkstreak scolded.

“I know, I know this looks bad... but you have to trust me when I say it was absolutely necessary...” Arrow coaxed.

“I would LOVE to hear how hanging out, eating snacks while your competition warms up and stretches is ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY!” He yelled.

“We were just about to head out there for a quick lap or two, and of course the meet and greet with the fans...” Arrow said. “Just, things got pretty tense this morning with The Wonderbolts; pretty much destroyed the team’s morale, so we needed this social time to get their spirits back up.”

Darkstreak calmed down a bit.

Arrow continued, “You know Skylight can be kinda sensitive, and CC’s big problem was not knowing the group very well off the track. And this is Fire Blitz’s first A-Wave race! She looked so nervous yesterday I thought she was gonna pass out! They’ve all been working their plots off on the practice track back at Everfree, so trust me, they all really needed this social time.”

Darkstreak’s angry scowl turned into his normal, not-so-angry scowl. “Alright, kid. Makes some sorta sense.”

Arrow smiled, “I get it, Darkstreak. First big time being captain, you see me goofing off, I’d be upset if I were you too. But like you said, I gotta trust in my team, and I think they can deliver today. The Wonderbolts’ morale took a beating this morning too, and they’ve been on that track all day since. I think we have the advantage.”

“What happened that was so drastic it affected all you guys this bad?” Darkstreak asked.

“Soarin was mouthing off about--”

“Damnit Arrow!” Darkstreak cut him off. “You gotta end this stupid rivalry-feud with Soarin! Beginning of last season you both beat each other half to death! Disqualified you both for three races, remember!? You can’t pull that kinda stunt as a captain now!”

“I know that!” Arrow said. “But this time he wasn’t just attacking me, he attacked my whole team! And as captain, I can’t just stand by and let him bad mouth us like that. And I didn’t hit him! ...this time.”

“You sure you were just defending the team? Or your own pride?” Darkstreak said. “Because from what I know about you, both of those things are pretty high up on your priorities list, Arrow, and when push comes to shove, I can’t be sure which would win.”

Night Arrow raised his head proudly. “I know what I’m doing Darkstreak.” he said. “I appreciate your advice, I’ve taken it for years. And I respect you more than anypony I’ve ever met. But you just have to trust me when I say, I have this team’s best interest in mind.”

Darkstreak looked sternly at Night Arrow. His mouth cracked a smile. “Alright kid.” He turned towards the stands. “I trust you.”

Night Arrow smiled confidently at the approval of his mentor.

“Alright kid, I gotta head up to the coach’s box.” Darkstreak turned to leave.

“What? Aren’t you gonna be out there on the sidelines?” Arrow asked.

“No, not this season, Arrow.” Darkstreak said. “This season, I’m just a coach, not a captain, and you know the rules.”

“Oh, that’s right...” Arrow said. He didn’t realize he’d be running the race solo this season, since last season they technically didn’t have a coach. Darkstreak was coaching and racing along side them.

“Coaches sit in the box during the races. We tell you how to race on the practice tracks, but not during official races. No more special treatment, for us, kid. You’re completely on your own out there.” Darkstreak continued.

“No problem, Darkstreak.” Arrow nodded. “Just don’t let Coach Brightspeed bore you to death up there.” He joked.

Darkstreak almost smiled. “I’ll be rooting for you guys.” He began to walk away. “Tell the team I said good luck.”

CHAPTER 38

Scootaloo and Raindrops, accompanied by Silver Shield, walked up to the Wonderbolts Stadium gate.

“Wow...” Scootaloo said in awe. “This place is huge!” Scootaloo began to run around the entrance of the stadium, surveying every wall and decoration.

Raindrops just smiled. She’d always been so jaded by the stadium since she saw it pretty much every day, but seeing how awe-struck Scootaloo was allowed her to see it with a fresh new perspective. She’d spent so much time and effort burying her past, she had forgotten just how awesome it was. Memories came flooding back, and her smile widened.

“Is that a smile, Miss Raindrops?” Silver Shield asked.

“Huh? Oh... yeah. Just a lot of memories here, ya know?” Raindrops said.

“I’m sure there are. It’s just, since I met you, I haven’t seen you smile once!” Silver Shield teased.

“What? Really?” Raindrops thought back. He was right! She really was ruining this trip for her and Scootaloo. “You know what Silver Shield, you’re right.” She nodded, “I’m gonna make the best of the rest of this trip. No more letting stupid things get me down! We’re only here for one more night, and I wanna make sure this is a memorable trip for both Scootaloo, and me!” She proudly walked up to the gate.

Waiting for them at the gate was a middle-aged unicorn stallion with a light brown coat and black mane, wearing a Wonderbolts polo shirt. “Tickets please.” He said dryly.
Silver Shield used his magic to pull out the two box seat tickets from a pocket on his armor, as well as his royal guard id card.

“Oh, you’re guests of Princess Celestia!” the gate keeper said with a lively new tone. “Of course! Right this way.” The three ponies walked through the gate. “The box seats are on the second floor, all the way down the hall!”

Scootaloo immediately ran to the rows of normal seats directly in front of the entrance to catch her first view of the massive track. She couldn’t believe her eyes! There in the center of this huge stadium was a gaping hole, and a doughnut shaped cloud which made up the track. On the track was Spitfire, in her full Wonderbolt uniform, and the rest of the Wonderbolts.

“Pretty impressive, eh?” Raindrops said coming up from behind her.

“This place is so awesome!!” Scootaloo yelled. “I wanna be a racer!”

Raindrops laughed. “Well, when you get back to Ponyville, I’ll ask your friend Rainbow Dash how you’re doing with those flying lessons, and see if I can help you get in the air a little faster. Then, once you’ve got your cutie mark, we’ll send an application to the Wonderb--”

“The Shadowbolts!” Scootaloo finished Raindrops’ sentence excitedly.

“...or the Shadowbolts, I suppose.” Raindrops said, trying not to flinch at the idea.

“Rainy! Let’s go get me that flag!” Scootaloo said, pulling on her sister’s wing.

“Scoots, are you sure you don’t want to root for the Wonderbolts--?”

“You promised, Rainy!” Scootaloo whined.

Raindrops stood quiet for a moment, then gave in. “You’re right. I did... *sigh* let’s go get you that flag.”

“Yes!!” Scootaloo said, and ran off ahead, her wings buzzing with excitement.

“I’m sure it’s just a phase, Miss Raindrops.” Silver Shield said. “She’s just being oppositional. I’m sure it’ll pass.”

Raindrops smiled again. “I hope you’re right, Silver Shield.”

Back at Everfree Forest Stadium, there was a knock on the home team locker room door.

“Hmm, that must be my ride.” Trixie said, putting on her cape and straightening her hat. She opened the door and saw the strangest looking pony she’d ever seen. He was a dark gray, with long frayed fur at the tips of his ears, and bat-like wings. His pupils were slits like a snake, and his teeth were much sharper than any pony she’d ever seen.

“Miss Trixie Lulamoon?” He said with a raspy voice.

“Um, yes.” Trixie responded, not sure what to make of this... creature.

“I come on behalf of Luna, Princess of the Night, by invitation of Night Arrow of the Everfree Forest Shadowbolts to escort you to Wonderbolts Stadium for today’s race.” He said, bowing.

Trixie did enjoy being bowed to.

“Oh, well yes. I am The Great and Powerful Trixie!” She announced proudly. “And Trixie has been expecting you.” She pointed her snout up.

The bat-pony raised his head and motioned for her to follow him. “The chariot is right this way.” He said, unmoved by her boastful introduction, and led her to the black and violet vehicle. Another, identical bat-pony was already attached to the reigns, and didn’t seem to acknowledge anything happening around him.

‘Very strange’ Trixie thought. ‘I wonder where Luna found ponies like this to be her guards...?’

The first bat-pony helped her into the chariot, and attached himself to the remaining reigns. Without another word, the two lifted the chariot into the sky and headed towards Canterlot.

* * *

“Alright ladies, suit up!” Arrow said, zipping up his Shadowbolts outfit. “Let’s get to the track, stretch a little, do 20 quick laps, and our trademark meet-n-greet! Then clear the track for the opening ceremony!”

Fire Blitz was much calmer now that she had some time to just hang out with the rest of the team. Her anger towards Soarin didn’t go away, and in fact just made her want to push even harder on the track to show him just how fast she could be.
Skylight was already in her flight suit and goggles and was hopping around the visitors room excitedly.

CC put her regular Wonderbolts goggles away in her bag and pulled out her Shadowbolts pair. “We’re all ready, Arrow!” she smiled.

“I was BORN ready!!” Skylight yelled.

“How ya doing Blitz?” Arrow nudged the red mare.

“I’m great, Arrow.” She said with a smile. “Let’s show these guys how The Shadowbolts race!”

Arrow nodded and smiled. “Let’s get out there!”

“Yes Sir!” The three mares shouted in unison, and they bursted out of the door onto the track.

CHAPTER 39

“This is it, ladies,” Silver Shield opened the door with his magic. “The Wonderbolt Stadium box suite.”

The two pegasus mares slowly walked inside.

The room was carpeted a dark blue, and the walls were painted a light blue with a yellow stripe horizontally across the middle. There was a small buffet in the back of the room and 8 cushiony chairs lined the front of the room, only about two feet from the giant glass window which made up the wall facing the track.

“This is amazing!” Scootaloo shouted excitedly.

“I gotta admit, this is pretty impressive!” Raindrops said. “This is new, isn’t it?”

“It was built a year ago, to commemorate the first competitive racing season for the Canterlot Wonderbolts.” Silver Shield said matter-of-factly.

“And we have it all to ourselves!?” Scootaloo asked.

“Well, let me check the reservations,” Silver Shield said, using his horn to bring the clipboard hanging on the wall closer to his face. “Um, no actually, it says Princess Celestia has reserved seats for the two of you, and Princess Luna has reserved a seat for one.”

“There’s gonna be some other random pony in here?” Raindrops asked.

“Apparently.” Silver Shield said. “Whoever it is, they’re a guest of Princess Luna.”

“Maybe they’re a Shadowbolt fan!” Scootaloo said.

“Most likely.” Silver Shield said, “Princess Luna is much more involved with her racing team than Princess Celestia is. The Wonderbolts pretty much run themselves; Celestia just hires a coach, and investors and ticket sales take care of the finances. The Shadowbolts have no coach, so the captain runs the team while Princess Luna makes all the big decisions.”

“Who’s the captain?” Raindrops asked.
“Last I checked it was a stallion named Darkstreak.” Silver Shield said. “But he was getting up in years, so I’m not sure if he’ll be returning this season.”

“Darkstreak?” Raindrops thought aloud for a moment, “That’s the name of my old flight school instructor. I wonder if it’s the same stallion...” she said.

“I’m not sure Miss Raindrops,” Silver Shield said “I apologize, but I don’t know much about the Shadowbolts.”

“Well, I’m gonna grab some food!” Scootaloo said, running to the small buffet in the back of the room.

“Sounds good to me.” Raindrops said, walking over as well. “I’m starving.”

* * *

Luna’s bat-pony guards landed directly in front of Wonderbolt Stadium, Trixie in the chariot behind, still lifting her chin up at the crowds of Canterlot ponies that happen to glance her way. She absolutely loved the attention.

“We have arrived, Miss Trixie.” The guard announced.

“So we have.” Trixie said, walking gracefully out of the vehicle.

“I will accompany you to the suite.” The other guard said, detaching himself from the reigns.

“Trixie appreciates it.” She said, and walked with the guard through the gate, and up towards the suite.

Almost to the door, Trixie asked, “Will you and Trixie be the only ponies in this royal suite?”

“No.” The bat-pony said, “Celestia, Princess of the Sun has two guests and their royal escort inside.”

“Oh,” she smiled. ‘Good.’ Trixie thought ‘This weird looking pony would be awful company, especially if it would be just me and him. Besides, maybe I can sell a few tickets to MY show while I’m here.’

The bat-pony politely opened the door, and Trixie walked in, as arrogant as ever. With her snout up, chest out, and eyes closed, she boasted “Alright everypony, do not get too excited! The Great and Powerful Trixie is here to watch a race, and not to sign autographs!” she stopped in the middle of the room, and batted her eyelashes, “Well, unless the price is right...”

“You!” Raindrops snarled. “Of all the ponies in Equestria...!”

Trixie surveyed the two mares and the royal guard, and raised an eyebrow. “Is Trixie supposed to know you?”

“You humiliated our friends!” Scootaloo yelled.

“That... doesn’t really narrow it down.” Trixie rolled her eyes.

“A few months ago! In Ponyville!” Raindrops snapped.

“Ponyville!?” Trixie’s smile turned to a scowl. “Oh... you’re friends with Twilight Sparkle.” she said through her teeth.

“We’re friends with the whole town!” Scootaloo said. “And you nearly destroyed it!”

“Now now, let’s not get ahead of ourselves,” Trixie dramatically put her hoof to her chest, appearing offended at the accusation. “The Great and Powerful Trixie merely performed a quick show! It was those dumb little foals who brought an Ursa to your backwater little town.”

“Those colts were the only ponies in town you would tolerate you!” Raindrops yelled, stepping closer to Trixie. “And you call them dumb? It’s no wonder entire towns hate you!”

“Oh no, hun. That’s just jealousy.” Trixie said, her smug smile returning to her face.

“Why you--!” Raindrops opened her wings threateningly, Trixie did not flinch.

“--Rainy! Stop!” Scootaloo pulled at her sister’s tail. “Not now! We’re gonna get kicked out of the box seats just because you wanna fight!”

Trixie winced at the mention of the yellow mare’s name. ‘Rainy?’ she thought, ‘Why does that name sound so familiar...?’

You’re right, Scoots.” she said. “She’s not worth it. Just do us a favor and stay on your side of the room. We’d like to enjoy the race.”

“Whatever.” Trixie said, not letting up her prima-donna attitude. She walked over to the seats on the other side of the room. ‘Rainy, and Scoots...?’ she thought to herself... ‘I know those names... Wait, could they be...?’ She glanced at the two pegasus mares. ‘No. No way.’ She shook it off.

* * *

“Fillies and Gentlecolts!” The loud speaker blared across the stadium. Fanfare trumpeted behind the announcer’s voice. “On behalf of Princess Celestia and Princess Luna, I would like to welcome you all to the Canterlot Royal Wonderbolt Stadium!”

“Sorry everypony!” Arrow announced to the crowd, “Looks like it’s showtime! No more autographs today!”

Fire Blitz was having the time of her life. She couldn’t believe that anypony would even want her autograph.

“Alright, ladies! It’s showtime!” Arrow said. The entire team flew over to the locker room hallway underneath the stands and got ready to be officially announced out.

“Okay...” Blitz said with wavering enthusiasm.

“Don’t be nervous, Blitzy!” Skylight bounced, “You and CC got this race in the BAG!”

“Yeah, Blitz. You’ll do great.” Arrow smiled. “Skylight and I will be cheering for you from here!”

“Thanks, Arrow.” Blitz said.

“No problem. We promoted you for a reason, Blitz. You’re ready for this, trust me.”

* * *

Meanwhile, on the other side of the stadium The Wonderbolts’ A-Wave was standing in their hallway, ready to make their big entrance.

“Alright, A-Wave!” Spitfire yelled. “Let’s have some good, clean races out there, and most importantly: have fun--”

“Most importantly, wipe the track with these posers!” Soarin interrupted.

“Sportsmanship, Soarin!” Spitfire said.

“Just a little pep-talk, oh fearless leader. Healthy competition, I swear.” He smiled.

Spitfire raised an eyebrow. “As I was saying... Echo and Misty, just go out there, focus, remember your tactics, and have a good time.”

“Yes Ma’am!” the Fleetfoot twins said in unison.

Over the loudspeaker, the voice continued: “Our first race this evening is between the first half of each A-Wave race team! Please welcome, the visitors from the Dark and Mysterious Woods Beyond Canterlot: The Everfree Forest Shadowbolts!”

Soarin rolled his eyes.

* * *

Up in the stands: “Oh good the race is starting!” Scootaloo said excitedly.

“Silver Shield! Come over and sit with us!” Raindrops called to him.

“I couldn’t, Miss Raindrops.” He said, humbly, “As guards, we must be by the door.”

“Oh bat-pony!” Trixie yelled, without turning around. “Bring Trixie her flag, please?”

“Yes Miss Trixie.” The bat-pony complied and brought a small, rolled up flag to Trixie’s seat.

“Thank you.” She said, still sounding cold. The bat-pony bowed and returned to his place by the door.

“Come on, Silver Shield!” Raindrops said, “I insist!”

“But Miss Rain--”

“Now!” She scolded.

Silver Shield sighed and glanced at the bat-guard standing on the adjacent side of the door. He was statuesque, and unmoved. “...if you insist.” he said, and walked over to the seats near the pegasus sisters.

* * *

The announcer continued, “Representing The Shadowbolt’s A-Wave for race one are newly appointed Co-Captain: CC, and a fresh face for the top-tier of the racing team, Fire Blitz!”

“That’s our cue, Blitz! Let’s get out there!” CC said, and blasted into the sky above the track.

“Here we go...” Blitz gulped nervously, and followed quickly behind.

Cheers filled the stadium as CC waved enthusiastically to the crowd, and flew around the track a few times, Blitz followed close behind her. And that’s when it all sank in; all these fans were cheering for her. Of course, they were cheering for the whole team, but Fire Blitz was on this team! She was a quarter of the entire Shadowbolts’ A-Wave! And as she and CC zipped around the track, the roar of the crowd made one thing very, very apparent:

Fire Blitz finally made it.

She was a professional racer!

...and she had fans!

* * *

“The Shadowbolts are coming out!” Scootaloo shouted excitedly. “Oh wait! I never got my Shadowbolts flag!” Scootaloo said.

“I didn’t see any on the way up from the entrance, Scoots...” Raindrops said. “But, I did bring my old Wonderbolt jersey from when I was your age...” she smiled, and pulled out the old, worn-out jersey from the saddle-pack under her seat. “Just in case you wanna root for a winning team.” She teased.

“Nope!” Scootaloo said. “Uh, wait-- I mean, I am rooting for a winning team! The Shadowbolts are gonna win! I just need a flag or something to cheer with!”

“Well, they’re kinda new, right? Maybe they don’t make Shadowbolts flags yet.” Raindrops said.

Scootaloo lowered her head. Then glanced at Trixie, who at this point had unrolled her flag, and was holding it up, waving it with her magic.

“Hey!” Scootaloo said, “Where did you get a Shadowbolts flag!?”

“Scootaloo!” Raindrops said, “We’re not talking to her, remember!?”

“But, if she has a flag, that means they do make them! Maybe we can get one too!”

Trixie turned to Scootaloo. “Trixie knows one of the racers... personally. He gave this to me a long time ago.”

“Is there any way I can get one?” Scootaloo asked.

Trixie was about to answer in her regular, condescending tone, but then she saw something. It was Scootaloo’s eyes. Or.. rather, it was Night Arrow’s eyes. Those exact same tone of violet, the unmistakeable tired look in them; that’s when it hit her.

“I-- Uh, Trixie can--” she stuttered as the realization made her panic a little in the back of her head. “Just... Here.” she offered her flag to Scootaloo, not knowing what else to do.

“Really...?” Scootaloo asked, understandably skeptical.

“Yes, um... Trixie does not know very many other Shadowbolt fans. So, you can use it during the first race if you’d like.” She said, still not lowering her snout. “But you have to give it back to Trixie when the race is over!” She snapped. “I... I’m cheering for someone in particular in the second race.”

Scootaloo didn’t know what to say. Raindrops always told her to say ‘thank you’ when ponies gave her things, but then again, Raindrops also wanted to beat the crap out of this particular pony. “Um, thank you?” Scootaloo said.

“You are welcome.” Trixie said, not looking into those little violet eyes any more.

This entire time, Raindrops sat quietly, not knowing whether to jump in and refuse the gift, or just stay quiet. An awkward, confused silence filled the room.

‘What do I do?’ Trixie thought to herself, ‘It IS them! They’re just how he described them! And they have no idea he’s on that track... or even alive!’ A nervous drop of sweat came down Trixie’s face. ‘This isn’t going to end well...”

* * *

“That was fun, eh?” CC said as the two mares landed on the starting line.

“That was AWESOME!” Blitz exclaimed. “I’ve never felt so... so awesome!”

CC just smiled. She remembered her first time in front of a cheering crowd. Of course that was only a season ago, but the rush of your first time is indescribable! And they’ve sure gained some fans since then!

“And finally...” The announcer said, in a deep voice as the stadium lights dimmed. “The moment you’ve all been waiting for. Representing their A-Wave for the first race of the evening... The Fastest Flyers in Equestria... The Brave and Bold in Blue and Gold... Please welcome to the track: Echo and Misty Fleetfoot of your Royal-- Canterlot-- Woooooonderboooooooolts!!”

The crowd went absolutely insane when the lights flashed back on, and fireworks shot into the sky above the track. The Fleetfoot twins shot out of their respective side of the track and flew around enthusiastically.

“Hey CC!” Blitz shouted over the noise of the crowd and fireworks.

“Yeah!?”

“Why are they connected by that wire!?” Blitz pointed out. There was a small tether attached to Misty’s back leg and Echo’s front hoof as they flew through the smoke and applause.

“Echo is blind, remember!?” CC said. “With all the noise from the fireworks and cheering at the beginning of races, her clicking technique doesn’t work too well, so her sister leads them around the track during the big introduction!”

“Oh!” Blitz nodded. “That makes sense!”

The crowd died down, and the smoke cleared as the Fleetfoot twins made their way to the starting line.

“You’re on row 3, hun.” Misty said as she untied the tether from her sister’s hoof.

“-click-, -clickclick-, -click-. Okay, I got it.” Echo smiled. “Thanks, Misty!”

“Break a leg, ladies!” CC smiled, and dug her back hooves into the cloud, getting into racing position.

“You too, CC!” Echo said, continuing her clicks softly.

“Have a good first race, Fire Blitz.” Misty said.

Blitz smiled. “Thanks Misty, break a leg.” she lowered her head, and closed her eyes, getting ready for the count off.

“Alright, everypony! May the best racer win!” The loud speaker blared. “The race will begin on my count! Standard 200-lap race! 2 pit stops allowed per racer, so make ‘em count! Are all racers ready!?”

The four mares spread their wings in response, ready to push forward.

“Great! Then let the first race of the season begin in 3...!”

Blitz grit her teeth.

“2...!”

‘Here goes nothing’

“1...!”

Blitz’s eyes shot open.

“GO!”

CHAPTER 40

The four pegasus ponies pushed into the soft cloud below their hooves and headed full speed into the first lap of the race.

“Rainy!” Scootaloo yelled from her seat. “Look! Look at the one with the red and black mane! She looks so cool!”

“This is her first A-Wave race.” Trixie said without taking her eyes off the track. “Her name is Fire Blitz.”

Scootaloo leaned forward, still waving the little black flag. “You said you know one of the racers?”

Trixie quickly glanced at Scootaloo. “Yes. *ahem* as a celebrity in Equestria, Trixie has the opportunity to meet all kinds of famous ponies.”

Raindrops rolled her eyes.

“As the first few laps of the race are well underway, it looks like newcomer Fire Blitz is really holding her own on the track!” The announcer said over the speaker. “Wonderbolt Misty Fleetfoot is still leading the pack with a one lap lead over Shadowbolt CC! Fire Blitz is in third and, as impressive as ever, Echo Fleetfoot is speeding around the track at break-neck speeds only relying on her echolocation!”

“Echolocation?” Raindrops said.

“Oh yes. I’ve heard of her.” Silver Shield smiled. “Echo and Misty are twin sisters, but Echo lost her sight at an early age, so she’s been relying on echolocation to map out her surroundings. It’s a pretty impressive trick when you consider just how fast she’s flying around that track. Just one wrong move and she can slam into a wall.”

“Echolocation? Like a bat?” Raindrops asked.

“Or like a dolphin!” Scootaloo said, “I like dolphins better, bats are weird-looking.”

Raindrops quickly elbowed Scootaloo, and motioned towards the bat-pony guard at the door. He still remained unmoved, and unflinching.

Scootaloo covered her mouth, and the sisters held in a laugh.

“Go CC!! Go Blitzy!!” Skylight yelled, leaning against the rail from the visitor’s sidelines. “She’s doing really well!”

“I hope she’s not giving it all she’s got in these first few laps.” Arrow said. “She’s only got two pit stops, and that’s usually just to grab some water, or stretch your wings.”

“This ’aint her first rodeo, Arrow!” Skylight said in a fake southern accent. “Blitz’s been ‘round the track before!”

“Stop talking like that.”

“You’re no fun.”

“I’m just saying,” Arrow continued, “this is an A-Wave race! 200 laps! Blitz has only competed with B-Wave; 150 laps, and 3 pitstops.”

“But we’ve been practicing for 200 laps!” Skylight said. “She’ll be fiiiiiine!”

“We’ll see.” Arrow said.

“Come on Echo, catch up...!” Soarin said, clenching his teeth.

“Relax, Soarin. We’re still in the first 50 laps. The real racing doesn’t start till at least lap 100.”

“I still don’t know why we even have a blind Wonderbolt on the A-Wave.” Soarin complained. “She’s good, but she’s B-Wave-captain-good, not A-Wave good.”

“She’s won quite a few races.” Spitfire said. “Besides, you can’t split up Misty and Echo. They’re a team!”

“Echo holds Misty back and you know it.”

“No, Misty supports Echo. They’re family. That’s what they do. Something team mates should also do.” Spitfire said imposingly.

“Heh, is that a dig at me?” Soarin scoffed. “I just have what’s best for the team in mind.” He said through his trademark smug smile. “You know, how a captain should.”

“You telling me how to captain this team?” Spitfire glared.

“I would never. . .” Soarin said patronizingly.

“-click-, -click- -clickclick-”

‘Buck. She’s right behind me...’ Fire Blitz thought. ‘I can’t let her pass me up!’ already starting to feel the fatigue.

“It’s lap 73! And Echo is closing the gap between her and Fire Blitz!” The speaker announced. “Misty is using up her first pit stop to grab some water! Will this give CC the time she needs to catch up?”

‘Not gonna happen right now.’ CC thought. ‘I need to give these wings a stretch before the race really heats up.’

“Oh! CC is taking her pit stop too! This gives Fire Blitz a little time to close the two lap lead these two have on her!”

‘Perfect.’ Blitz smiled, and pushed her wings even harder.

“It seems like the other two mares are refusing to pit stop at the same time as their team mates! A bold move on their part!”

“That Fire Blitz is taking a huge risk!” Raindrops said. “She’s already flying pretty sloppily, I’m guessing she used all her strength at the beginning of the race. This definitely won’t go well for her.”

Scootaloo couldn’t help but looked surprised. “You know racing strategies?”

“Of course! Dad would never shut up about racing back in the day.” Raindrops said. “Your big sister knows a thing or two about the track!” she smiled smugly.

Trixie couldn’t help but listen in on the conversation between the two. ‘I wonder where this famous ex-Wonderbolts coach is?’ she thought, ‘It’s strange he wouldn’t be here with his youngest daughter watching her first race.’

“Well you’ll have to teach me a few of these strategies!” Scootaloo said. “If I ever want to make it into The Shadowbolts!”

“Ha! No way, Scoots’. These are Wonderbolt strategies! You either go for the home team, or you’re on your own!” Raindrops laughed.

“Hey, where’s Luna?” Skylight looked around the stadium.

“She should be at the giant throne seats toward the north end of the stadium.” Arrow said. “Come on, Blitz! What are you doing?” He muttered under his breath.

“She’s not here!” Skylight stood up on the rail. “Neither Princess is here! We’re princessless!”

“Oh, well that sucks.” Arrow said, his eyes focused on the race. “Something important must have happened to keep both of them away on opening race day.”

“Hmmph!” Skylight pouted. “She was so looking forward to seeing us!”

“Well, she’s a Princess first, and our team-owner second.” Arrow patted Skylight on the shoulder. “We have to keep that in mind. Besides, we can handle a simple race on our own-- No! Blitz!” He shouted out. “Dammit, she passed the pit stop again-- You’re gonna wear yourself out!!” Arrow yelled. “Take a pit stop!”

“Maybe you’re right, Arrow! This isn’t looking good for her...” Skylight seemed worried.

“Misty and CC are back on the track!” The speaker blared. “And only 3 laps behind Echo and Fire Blitz!”

“Blitzy!” Skylight threw her hooves in the air. “What is she thinking!?”

Arrow put his hoof to his forehead. “I know exactly what Blitz’s thinking. She’s thinking since she’s in first place, there’s no way she’s gonna take a pit stop now.”

‘I’m in first place!’ Blitz smiled. ‘There’s no WAY I’m gonna take a pit stop now! Wings, don’t fail me now!’ She was on top of the world. Flying in an A-Wave race, AND in first place! ‘Wow, Soarin was right! I guess my wings CAN handle to skip one or two pit stops!’

At this point, Fire Blitz was panting heavily from exhaustion, which in turn, didn’t allow her wings to flap at maximum efficiency.

“-clickclick- -click- -click-”

‘I can hear her again! Why hasn’t SHE taken a pit stop? It can’t be easy clicking the entire time she’s on the track!’ Blitz was so focused on her opponent, she didn’t realize how erratically her wings were flapping just to remain at the same speed she’d been flying. ‘Of course! That’s why Soarin told me to skip mine! He knew Echo was gonna skip hers too!’ Blitz thought, ‘Must be an old (-gasp-) Wonderbolt trick! Well not today, (-pant-) Fleetfoot twins! This race is gonna be (-gasp-) mine!’

“Blitz! Take a pit stop!” CC yelled as she and Misty sped by.

‘They lapped me!?’ Blitz thought. Then she suddenly felt the cold, thick mist below her hooves. ‘Oh no! (-gasp-cough-) I’m dragging!’ she realized, trying not to kick up pieces of cloud. ‘Come on, wings, I need to get to the (-cough-) pit stop area!!’

Fire Blitz pushed her wings harder than she thought she could. The adrenaline of the race, mixed with the crowd, and the panic of landing face-first on the cloud-track took it’s toll on her muscles, and she began to lose altitude.

“Is she... running?” Spitfire asked.

“Hmm, looks like cheating to me.” Soarin said.

“There’s no rule against running on the track, but she’s kicking up a lot of cloud.” Spitfire commented. “She just needs to get to her pit stop area.”

“Wow!” The announcer exclaimed, “Well nopony can say anything about her persistence! But poor Fire Blitz is tearing up the track! Literally!”

“Out of curiosity,” Soarin folded his front hooves, and leaned against the rail, “With all that kicked-up cloud covering the walls of the track, how well does Echo’s location-trick work?”

Spitfire’s heart dropped into her stomach. “Echolocation doesn’t work on clouds!”

“I didn’t think so.” Soarin said non-chalantly.

CHAPTER 41

“-click- -clickclick-”

‘That’s weird.’ Echo thought.

“-clickclickclick--!”

‘I can’t sense the track...!’ Echo began to panic.

“-ClickClickClick!!-”

‘I know I’m toward the curve, but I can’t sense where the wall begins!!’ Echo immediately dug her hooves into the track, and flapped her wings against the direction of the race to brake. This made an even larger cloud surround her, and cover about 20% of the track.

“Echo!!” Misty yelled, and sped up, diving into the the thick cloud-mist, CC following close behind. After a few seconds, only CC came out the other end.

“What’s this, folks? It looks like Echo is having some trouble with her echolocation after Fire Blitz kicked up all that cloud! Could this be some sort of cruel Shadowbolt racing tactic? Using The Wonderbolt’s weaknesses against them!?”

The crowd booed loudly. Soarin smiled; he had an idea.

“What!? No! It was an accident!” Fire Blitz yelled finally making it to the pit stop.

CC slowed down at the opposite side of the track, and looked around. “Do I keep racing?” She thought aloud.

Just then, Misty zoomed up and out of the fog holding Echo in her hooves.

“And there they are! It looks like the Fleetfoot twins are okay!” The announcer exclaimed.

“Cheater!” Soarin yelled from the sidelines. “I call time-out on the race!”

“Can he do that?” Skylight asked Arrow from the sidelines.

“I don’t know.” Arrow said, “This has never happened before.”

“It looks like Wonderbolt Co-Captain Soarin is trying to halt the race!” The announcer shouted. “Here at lap 104, he is calling The Shadowbolts out for sabotaging the track!”

“We didn’t sabotage anything!” Arrow yelled, flying into the sky above the track. “It was an accident! You all saw it!”

“An accident?” Soarin shouted, and flew up into the announcer’s box.

“Stop this, Soarin!” Arrow clenched his teeth. “This was an accident and you know it!”

Soarin smiled, and grabbed the announcer’s microphone.

“Hey!” The announcer yelled. “Give that back!”

Soarin continued addressing the entire stadium using the microphone, as he stepped out into the sky with Arrow.

“Obviously, the only ‘accident’ here, is promoting ‘Red over there into the A-Wave.”

Fire Blitz lowered her head. She’d never been so humiliated.

“Give me that microphone!” Arrow shouted, angrily.

“Actually, I take that back. I didn’t mean that.” Soarin said. The stadium was quiet. “That’s just the tip of the iceberg, isn’t it?”

Spitfire flew up to the two stallions. “Soarin! Stop this! You’re disrupting the race!”

“Disrupting the race? Me? Have you been WATCHING this race, CAPTAIN?” Soarin spat. “Maybe you missed some key points. But being the helpful guy I am, I’ll go ahead and recap them for you.” He turned to the audience.

“For ALL of you.”

Night Arrow debated tackling him, and taking the microphone, but The Shadowbolts already looked awful, and doing anything brash like that would only worsen things.

Meanwhile, in the box seats, everypony (except the bat-pony guard) was on the edge of their seats.

“What’s going on, Rainy?” Scootaloo asked. “Does this usually happen?”

Raindrops just ignored Scootaloo. She couldn’t help but notice the stallion wearing the Shadowbolt flight suit.

“No, not at all.” Silver Shield answered for her.

Trixie just had a worried look on her face.

“As anypony can plainly see,” Soarin continued, “These ‘Everfree Forest Shadowbolts’ are sore losers! And normally, we chalk that up to bad sportsmanship, but not today! Not THIS time! No, this time, their tricky ways are literally putting the lives of your Royal Canterlot Wonderbolts in DANGER!”

The crowd gasped, and immediately began talking amongst themselves.

“Ask yourselves! When was the last time we ever had to call a ‘time-out’ during a race? When was the last time one of our racers almost died!?”

Skylight flew up to Arrow’s side. “Arrow...? Do something!”

“He’s got the attention of the entire stadium, Sky.” Arrow muttered, “There’s nothing I can do.”

“Not since THEY came along.” Soarin pointed his hoof at Arrow, and smiled. “Not since Princess Luna’s little racing project wanted to play with the big boys.”

The crowd’s gossip became louder.

“Now, I don’t blame the princess, of course. She’s been gone for a very long time, and isn’t in charge of training the newbies in... racing with integrity.”

This entire time, Raindrops was just staring at the confrontation through the window. “There’s no way...” she whispered.

“No, I wouldn’t blame the royalty behind the organization.” Soarin turned towards Night Arrow, “I blame YOU.”

The crowd gasped once again.

“How dare he!” Trixie stomped her hooves on the ground. “He’s manipulating the entire stadium! Where is Princess Luna!?”

“Say his name.” Raindrops said angrily through her teeth.

“Rainy?” Scootaloo tugged at her sister’s wing. “Sis, you’re scaring me, what’s wrong? What’s happening?”

“I blame the mysterious stallion that came out of nowhere and ruined this sport for everypony!”

Arrow just stared at Soarin. The amount of anger in his glare was immeasurable.

“I blame the green-maned, tired-eyed pegasus, that soiled the proud sport of racing.”

Trixie worriedly kept her eyes on Raindrops.

The entire stadium went dead-silent. Raindrops was still holding on to the tiny bit of doubt in the back of her head.

That isn’t him. It’s not possible.
It whispered in her head.

It’s just not possible.

“I blame YOU, Night Arrow.”

Chapter 42

“Night Arrow?” Scootaloo said. “But... our family name is Arrow...”

“Miss Raindrops,” Silver Shield said, “Do you know that stallion?”

“I... did.” Raindrops said meekly. “A long time ago.”

“Is that ... Nightaniel? From the picture at home?” Scootaloo asked.

Raindrops just stayed quiet. Her eyes narrowed, and she clenched her teeth. “I can’t believe him.” She said. “How could he--? After all this time...!?”

“Wait, so... does that mean... our brother’s alive?” Scootaloo said.

“Alive and well.” Raindrops snarled through her teeth, and got up from her seat. “But not for long! He’s been parading around here as a professional racer while I break my back working for the weather company! Hanging out with Spitfire and--” Raindrops stopped pacing. “Spitfire!! THIS is what she was warning me about! She must have known about this for years! How could she not tell me!?”

Trixie had a front row seat to both the downfall of her Special Somepony, and emotional breakdown of his family. She had to say something. She had to at least try to fix one of these problems.

“He wanted to go visit you.” She said.

Raindrops stopped ranting and glared over her shoulder at Trixie.

. . . “Excuse me?”

“After the race.” Trixie continued. “I made him promise he would go see you guys.”

“You knew who we were this entire time?” Raindrops stepped towards Trixie.

“Not the entire time, but I figured it out. You all have similar... features.”

“Wait... how exactly do you know Nightaniel?”

Trixie hesitated for a moment. “We’re... dating.”

“Oh! Of course you are!” Raindrops said incredulously. “So my brother is not only alive and well, but is a member of a professional racing team, who’s only goal is to beat the team my father spent years building up! And not only that! While my sister and I mourn him, and work our flanks to the bone trying to survive, he’s living his life in his fake pseudo-celebrity circle, dating the meanest, worst thing to ever happen to my home town!? Well he has EXCELLENT taste in mares!!”

“...and now he’s being accused of cheating.” Scootaloo chimed in, pointing at the action happening on the track.

* * *

“Arrow...” Skylight was back to back with him. “He’s turning all of Canterlot against us...!”

“I know.” Arrow said. “Where is Luna? She’ll be able to sort this out.”

CC and Fire Blitz flew up and joined their team mates.

“Arrow, what do we do?” CC said. “This is getting out of control, fast!”

“I’m so sorry!” Blitz pleaded. “I didn’t mean to hurt anypony! Honest!!” CC hugged her, consolingly. “It was Soarin! He tricked me!! I--”

“--You all saw it with your own eyes!” Soarin continued over the microphone. “The Shadowbolts are cheaters, and a complete disgrace to the entire sport of professional racing. I vote they are disbanded immediately for purposefully putting other racers’ lives in danger.”

Arrow glared daggers at Soarin.

The crowd cheered angrily.

“This is ridiculous! You have no authority!” Arrow flew aggressively towards Soarin. “Stop manipulating these ponies!”

Soarin flinched dramatically, dropping the microphone. “Aah!! Guards! Now he’s trying to attack me!”

“What!? No I’m not!” Arrow stopped mid flight.

Guards flew out of the sides of the stands, tackling Arrow out of the air.

“Arrow!!” Fire Blitz yelled.

“Hey! Let him go you jerks!!” Skylight screamed, rocketing towards the guards, hind-leg first.

“Skylight, no!! You’ll make things worse!” CC shouted, lunging to grab her, but she just wasn’t fast enough.

“Hiiyaaa!!” Skylight landed a powerful kick, successfully knocking one of the pegasus guards out of the sky and onto the track below.

“This isn’t over, Soarin!” Arrow scowled as he was hoof-cuffed, and his wings were tied to prevent escape. The same was done to Skylight, as she kicked and growled at the guards.

“Take them both away!” Another guard ordered as they took the dragged the two Shadowbolts out of the stadium in full uniform. “And grab the red one too.”

“What!?” Blitz exclaimed as guards approached her.

“Take her in until under suspicion of sabotaging a professional sport.” The guard continued.

CC drifted back down onto the track, and looked around the stadium, defeated. Her entire team was taken into custody.

Soarin landed on the track next to her.

“Looks like it’s just me and you now, Cloudy.” Soarin smiled smugly.
