> Silver Lining > by StoryDragon > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- > Silver Service > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- “Di, Di come on! We’re going to be late.” Silver Spoon anxiously called up to the bedroom window of her one, and only, friend. The grey earth pony paced up and down impatiently; this was so typical of Diamond Tiara. “I’ll be there in a minute Silver Spoon, jeeze!” The hot-tempered filly snapped back in reply. Diamond was delicately perfecting the curls in her lilac streaked mane. It took a long time to get them just right, but the glamorous young beauty wouldn’t dream of going to school with a single hair out of place. Silver Spoon didn't share Diamond’s enthusiasm for physical appearance. Every day, after a quick shower, Silver would simply brush and plait her own mane, before flinging it over her shoulder. The rest of Silver’s morning would be spent assembling her school supplies and carefully packing her homework from the night before. The cautious filly would sometimes repeatedly pack and unpack her school bag, to make sure she had absolutely everything she needed for the day ahead, before heading out to call for Diamond - who was almost never ready. Their teacher - a kind-hearted mare named Cheerilee - never gave the two of them much grief for turning up late, but still, Silver Spoon didn’t like walking into class with all the other students staring at her. Diamond however, really couldn’t care less. In fact, she seemed to love the attention. Today was different though; Silver had purposely turned up at Diamond Tiara’s home ten minutes earlier than usual, adamant that for once they would be arriving at school on time. Earlier that week, the class had been given a special group assignment, and today they would be presenting their finished projects. As always during school projects, Silver Spoon was paired up with Diamond Tiara. The two were upper-class ponies from rich families; they had been friends since Kindergarten. Diamond Tiara was a confident young filly. She had a pale pink coat and bright, cyan eyes. Her cutie mark resembled her name and represented her upbringing; it was a tiara. She wore a matching tiara upon her head, which her father had purchased for a hefty price on the very day she gained her cutie mark. Diamond could be incredibly difficult to work with at times. She always displayed an odd mixture of authority and disinterest in each and every task. The impatient earth pony would usually complain about the stupidity of the concept, and leave Silver Spoon to do all of the hard work, but then jump in and assert her authority as ‘team captain’ whenever decisions needed to be made. Of course, when the project was actually presented to the class, Diamond would never hesitate to take half of the credit for the final product. Needless to say, Silver Spoon was actually quite proud of their project this time around. She carried it around her neck in a large green satchel, it was a bit heavy and weighed her head down a little, causing her neck to ache. “Di are you ready yet?” Silver Spoon called again, contemplating whether it was worth setting the satchel down for a moment. “Hold on!” Diamond Tiara snapped once again. “But we’re already…” “I said hang on!” “Di…” “Okay! Ready!” The front door of Diamond Tiara’s manor flew open, and Silver Spoon couldn’t help but realise how pretty her friend was looking today; her pink coat was glossier than ever, her soft main flowed delicately past her shoulder, her long eyelashes had been curled, and her tail wavy and primed - she was clearly ready for presentation day. “Honestly Silver Spoon, you need to chill out.” Diamond pranced past her friend without a care in the world. Silver Spoon followed, still gawking at her beauty. “Our project is going to blow the others out of the water.” Diamond began to brag as the two trotted to school. “No one else’s work will even come close to what we have prepared. You’re so lucky to have me as a partner Silver Spoon.” Silver knew that wasn’t true – after all, she had done most of the work, as well as came up with the entire concept, but she smiled and agreed with Diamond Tiara, just as she always did. “Especially those Cutie Mark Crusaders.” Diamond continued, “Can you imagine the look on their faces when their project fails to stand out?” “They’ll be pretty disappointed.” Silver Spoon chuckled. The Cutie Mark Crusaders, or CMC for short, were three fillies at their school; Apple Bloom, Sweetie Belle, and Scootaloo. They were a trio of best friends, and the only fillies in class who were yet to obtain their cutie marks, which was something that Diamond and Silver took great pleasure in teasing them about. Every time the class was given group assignments, the Cutie Mark Crusaders’ work would shine. They had such great chemistry, and always came up with something clever, creative, and interesting to present to the class. Silver’s heart wretched each time the CMC were given praise by Cheerilee, along with a gold star sticker to commemorate their success. She was determined that today would be the day - the day her and her friend Diamond Tiara finally stole the limelight from those annoying little blank-flanks. The two fillies arrived at the school just as the bell was about to ring. Diamond strutted past all of the other ponies, occasionally pushing one or two out of her way. Besides looking rightfully annoyed, the other students did nothing to retaliate; they were quite used to the Diamond Tiara’s snobbish behavior, and knew better than to draw attention to it. Silver Spoon followed behind her friend, ignoring the scowls of her fellow classmates, and took her seat. As the other ponies sat down, they began greeting one another and chatting among themselves excitedly, asking one another questions about the project, and wishing each other luck with their presentations. Finally, Cherilee entered the room, looking equally excited to start the day. “Alright class, settle down.” She smiled, “Good morning everypony! I can tell you are all very eager to show off your fantastic projects on the history of Equestria!” She glanced around the room. Some of the students had their projects laid out on their desks. Two of the young colts - Snips and Snails - were wearing paper helmets, and a trio of students near the front of the class were holding together a small stage set they had created out of wood, along with painted figurines. “I can already see we are in for quite a treat.” Cheerilee added anxiously, “So, who’s going to go first?” Many ponies raised their hooves, but Diamond Tiara was the quickest. Silver Spoon wasn’t sure she wanted to go first; she would much rather check out the competition, and see what the other students had produced. Silver knew in her head that a school assignment wasn’t really a competition, but Diamond Tiara treated everything as such, and this attitude had rubbed off a little onto her partner. “Alright Diamond Tiara, Silver Spoon, let’s see what you came up with!” Cheerilee clapped merrily. Without so much as glancing at her partner, Diamond stood up and marched to the front of the class. She gave a bitter sneer in the direction of Apple Bloom as she passed the country filly’s desk. Silver followed behind, a little more cautiously, puffing out her chest to look confident as she also passed by the CMC. When the two friends stood facing the class, Silver Spoon reached into her satchel and carefully took out their project. It was a colourful sculpture, made from clothe, gems, paint, and glitter. The class gave an impressed gasp as the object sparkled beautifully before their eyes. Silver Spoon tampered with her glasses nervously for a few seconds, and then took a deep breath, ready to explain the concept of the piece. But as usual, Diamond Tiara beat her to the mark. “Our project is a miniature replica of the palace made by the wealthy Prince Topaz, who built a tower out of gems, in order to win the approval of his subjects and overthrow his controlling power hungry father.” Diamond said in a boastful tone. She pointed at the top of the tower, where a doll version of the pegasus prince was placed looking out over the kingdom. “As you can see, there is no entrance to the tower. The only way to get to the top was by flying. King Topaz exercised his wings to make them strong enough to reach the top, most regular pegasus would get tired and not be able to make it halfway up the tower, and his father – an earth pony - had no chance.” Silver was about to make a point, but Diamond continued, “The fields are made from emerald coloured clothe and decorated with real emeralds. As you can see, King Topaz had gems to spare. It wasn’t long before the entire kingdom turned their back on his father, and crowned him their new king.” “That’s very creative.” Cheerilee praised the two. Diamond Tiara lifted her head proudly, “But do you know what happened to King Topaz’s father after he was overthrown by his own son?” The pink filly blinked, and hesitated; she had no idea. Luckily, Silver Spoon had the answer, “He tried to destroy the tower, but Prince... urm, 'King' Topaz, set his army against him. His father was exiled from the kingdom, and never seen again.” She replied, much to their teachers delight. Silver Spoon smiled at Diamond Tiara, expecting a response, but Diamond ignored her, and turned to face Cheerilee for more praise. “Very good you two, I am impressed.” Cheerilee said proudly, “Now who is next, Apple Bloom, what about your group?” “Urm…” Apple Bloom blushed, “I…urm…” Diamond Tiara smirked; clearly the young farm pony didn’t feel confident about having to follow her and Silver’s fantastic presentation. Apple Bloom then turned her head, and turned to face her partners. Sweetie Bell and Scootaloo nodded supportively, and then all three concluded, “Yes Miss Cheerilee, we are ready!” The Cutie Mark Crusaders looked determined as they took Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon’s place at the front of the class, carrying with them an oddly shaped cardboard cut-out. Diamond Tiara sniggered at the sight of the strange object, and whispered to Silver Spoon, “This should be good.” As the three friends stood in place, they turned their project toward the class. It was a shield, painted and decorated just like the sculpture, except it involved many detailed drawings of knight ponies, buffalo tribes, and even a dragon flying overhead. There were only a few gems around the boarder, but on the main surface the fillies had used buttons, ribbon, and paint instead. Cheerilee looked instantly pleased with the cardboard shield, which calmed Apple Bloom’s nerves a little. She looked toward Scootaloo and gave a nod, and the orange pegasus smiled back at her friend before beginning to speak. “Our project tells a story, going back to the days when the buffalo tribes and earth ponies weren’t getting along. As you can see in this image, drawn by our artist Sweetie Belle…” She gestured to her friend. “The buffalo and knights are battling it out, to decide who has rights to the land!” Sweetie Belle blushed a little, before pointing to the next image, and taking her turn to speak. “In this segment, we’ve shown how the buffalo and earth ponies tried to divide the land between them, but argued constantly about how this should be done. The buffalo needed large areas to stampede, and the Ponies needed areas for their farmlands. We were going to leave it there, but then Apple Bloom had this great idea to include the dragon… you tell them Apple Bloom!” She excitedly smiled at her friend, who cleared her throat and continued where Sweetie Belle had left off. “Here you can see how the ferocious dragon appears and begins to attack the land, and suddenly the two sides decide to work together in order to protect it. The Ponies build barriers around their homes, and the buffalo lured the dragon miles away into the mountains. When the buffalo returned, the Ponies welcomed them happily.” Scootaloo continued, “They were able to compromise, building tracks and roads around the farms and buildings.” Then Sweetie Belle stepped in, “They celebrated their unity by creating shields to represent how the two cultures worked together to defend their home.” Apple Bloom concluded, “Scootaloo came up with the idea to tell the story on a shield, to commemorate that moment.” The three friends grinned at one another; they knew they had done well. The class was wide eyed and Cheerilee looked very impressed. “That was excellent girls, very well done, I really liked your choice of story. That deserves a gold star.” Diamond Tiara’s mouth fell open; she couldn’t believe that the Cutie Mark Crusaders had gotten yet another gold star. She gritted her teeth and scowled. Silver spoon sighed, she was sad about losing to the crusaders, but there was something else about their presentation which had left her feeling rather down. Their shield was well crafted, but then so was her and Di’s gemstone tower. Their story was well-chosen, but then so was her and Di’s story about the wealthy prince. So why was it, that the Cutie Mark Crusaders had once again, outperformed them? Why was it, that they had been rewarded a sticker for their work, when her and Diamond Tiara hadn’t? What had these three dumb little blank-flanks got, that two upper class mares like her and Di, hadn’t got? It made no sense to Silver Spoon. No sense at all. ~*~ Silver Spoon avoided eye contact with Diamond Tiara for the rest of the day; she knew that Diamond would blame her entirely for their history project being outshone by that of the Cutie Mark Crusaders. The disappointed filly sat nervously watching as the other students came up in their groups to present their work. The projects were all very creative; some acted out battle scenes, many created sculptures, and two of the fillies - Dinky and Twist - had even created a puppet show. Silver Spoon observed the other ponies proudly showing off their projects, taking it in turns to explain the concept and giving one another credit for a job well done. The rest of the class was applauding and admiring the work of their peers. Everyone was having a great time; it was a nice break from their regular classes. After all of the groups had finished their presentations, the bell rang, and Cheerilee congratulated the young ponies once again. “Well done every pony! We certainly saw some fantastic work today! Have a great weekend, and we will be back to our usual schedule on Monday.” The young fillies and colts gave a cheer when they heard the bell. They said goodbye to their teacher, and left the classroom, chatting happily about their plans for the weekend. Diamond Tiara scowled at the floor, as she silently stood up and left the classroom, with Silver Spoon following closely behind. “I can’t believe that stupid project got those filthy little blank-flanks a gold star.” Di grumbled, “I told you we should’ve added more gem stones. You never listen to me Silver Spoon!” Silver was contemplating a response; she wasn’t so sure that it was the lack of gem stones which had let them down, when suddenly the Cutie Mark Crusaders passed by, still looking cheerful about their success. “Great job girls.” Apple Bloom smiled, “Maybe we’ll get our cutie marks in arts and crafts!” Diamond gazed over at the fillies, with eyes full of hatred and jealousy. Silver Spoon felt a similar way; she couldn’t stand those three. They had no cutie marks, they had no luxurious lifestyle, they weren’t gifted or bought up in rich families, and yet… they were so happy. Every time she saw them, they were laughing and playing together, enjoying every minute of each other’s company – and this made her very angry. Diamond Tiara never failed to jump at an opportunity to rain on the CMC’s parade, and Silver Spoon was never far behind. “Cutie marks for doing homework? I’ve never heard of anything more ridiculous.” Diamond loudly taunted the fillies, catching their attention. Silver Spoon then saw her chance to redeem herself in Diamond Tiara’s eyes, and joined in on the teasing. “Can you even imagine what that would look like Di?” She pointed at each of the Curie Mark Crusaders in turn, “A terrible cardboard cut-out, a splash of paint, and an unidentifiable scribble.” Apple Bloom and Scootaloo’s faces dropped, but Sweetie Belle retaliated; “You guys are just jealous because our project won us a gold star.” She stomped her hoof in annoyance. Diamond scoffed, “You might have a pointless little gold star for your stupid artwork, but it clearly wasn’t good enough to earn you a cutie mark, not even one that resembles a sloppy mess!” The Cutie Mark Crusaders looked hurt; Diamond Tiara had a point. If their project was so great, then why did they still have blank flanks? Diamond still wasn’t finished though, “Aw don’t be miserable.” She teased, “If you did get a cutie mark for something as ridiculous as homework, you’d be a complete laughing stock. Cutie marks should represent something you can be proud of, like mine.” She smiled proudly at her own flank, which had the image of an elegant tiara. “I gained my cutie mark because my father bought a jewelry store, which meant that I could have all the jewelry and diamonds I wanted. My father had terrible taste, and only I could tell what was really valuable. I had a natural gift for luxury, and wouldn’t accept anything but the best. It wasn’t long before I got my cutie mark, and my father had a tiara specially crafted to match it.” The filly pointed at the diamond studded tiara on her head; true to her word, it looked exactly like her cutie mark. “Tell them how you got your cutie mark Silver.” Diamond motioned to her friend, This was no problem for Silver Spoon. Her cutie mark was a fancy spoon with a heart-shaped handle; it looked very impressive. “My family are so rich; they only eat at the most expensive five star restaurants.” She boasted, finally gaining a smile of approval from Diamond Tiara. “After tasting high quality meals from all around Equestria, I gained my cutie mark, because ponies in my family only settle for the finest cuisine.” Silver felt relaxed; she had told this story so many times, that even she had started to believe it was true. “See,” Diamond finished, “That is what a cutie mark should be for - not for some silly little history project or manual labour.” The two set off laughing, leaving the Cutie Mark Crucaders looking sadly at their blank flanks. Silver Spoon felt much, much better. They soon reached Diamond Tiara’s large, three story manor. It was a beautiful building, with pale bricks and plants decorating every door and window. “Well Silver, we certainly put those three back in their place.” Diamond smiled bitterly, “See you tomorrow.” Silver felt so relieved that the two of them were still on good terms. She continued toward her own home, which was a little more formal, but every bit as impressive as Diamond Tiara’s. Her house looked like a small castle, which stood proudly upon a hill overlooking several other buildings owned by her family. When Silver Spoon opened the door, she was greeted by her father, a tall dark grey earth pony, named Silver Platter. He was neatly dressed in a waistcoat and tie, with a nearly trimmed mane. “Silver Spoon, good, you’re home.” Silver Platter spoke in a firm tone, “Hurry up and finish your homework; I need you to work a late shift at the restaurant tonight.” Silver Spoon smiled and replied, “Sure Daddy.” The afternoon seemed to drag, but it was soon time for work. As she was putting on her uniform, Silver admired how much the frilled apron suited her. The young filly then felt a familiar odd mixture of both joy and sadness. The truth is, Silver Spoon had been lying to Diamond Tiara about how she earned her cutie mark, and she had been lying to every pony at school, too. Silver’s family were rich, and they had travelled all over Equestria tasting fancy cuisine – at least, her parents had. Silver Spoon’s father had eventually purchased his own restaurant just outside of Ponyville. It was a huge success; an elegant atmosphere, exquisite decor, beautiful music, and the food was second to none. Rich ponies came from all over to eat there, and they even had a few celebrity customers now and then, but it was incredibly rare that any regular pony from Ponyville ever visited the restaurant. For years, the business was a huge success. Then one day, there was a dramatic dispute between two of the waitresses, involving an incident where food had been delivered to the wrong table. One of them lost her temper, and quit on the spot, leaving the team under staffed. Silver Platter was notified immediately, but he couldn’t find a replacement on such short notice, and began to panic. Meanwhile, Silver Spoon had just finished laying their dining room table for dinner when she noticed her father’s distress, and immediately approached him to find out what was wrong. It was at this moment Silver’s father saw how well his daughter had prepared the table for the evening's meal. The cutlery was laid out perfectly; every spoon, knife, and fork was in the correct position, sparkling beside the main dinner plates. A smaller plate accompanied each set for the bread rolls, and Silver Spoon had even placed a glass vase filled with red and pink roses at the very centre of the table. Impressed by his daughters display, Silver’s father asked her if she would like to give waitressing a try. Silver Spoon was hesitant at first, but after seeing how much her dad was stressing out about the dilemma, she realised just how important the restaurant was to him. And so, Silver agreed to take the shift, and was pleasantly surprised; she made a fantastic waitress. On top of this, Silver Spoon actually really enjoyed working at the restaurant, laying out the cutlery, providing excellent quality service, and most importantly; being given praise and compliments from both the customers and her collegues. Silver Spoon was such a credit to the team, that she was offered a permanent part time position. Soon, she was not only a waitress, but she also worked in the kitchens. She cooked, she cleaned, she washed up, she greeted customers at the door, and she loved every minute of it. Before Silver Spoon knew it, her cutie mark appeared. It was a fancy looking spoon, representing her excellent catering skills. The handle was even decorated with a heart, symbolising Silver’s great passion for the service she provided. As she was still a young filly, Silver was not able to work full time at the restaurant because of school, but she took shifts every weekend, and occasional week day evenings. This job was Silver’s single greatest joy in life; it made her feel both needed, and appreciated. However, despite her love for the job, Silver Spoon could never mention to Diamond Tiara that she was a part time waitress - the thought of such a thing made the poor filly sick to her stomach. She was supposed to be eating at fanciful restaurants every night, not working at one. This was almost as pathetic as the idea of the cutie mark crusaders getting their cutie marks for homework. If Diamond Tiara knew that Silver Spoon had gained her cutie mark from working hard and providing a service to other ponies, she would be disgusted, and most likely disown her. Silver sighed, and finished putting on her uniform - it really did look good on her. She clipped her plaited mane back, folding it into a neat bun, and then gave her glasses a wipe to clear the lenses, before setting off toward the restaurant. ~*~ When Silver Spoon arrived she was greeted with a warm welcome, by a small group of ponies who were also working that evening. “Silver there you are! Looking beautiful as ever!” The head chef laughed; he was a jolly unicorn, with a stylish mustache and a large build. “There’s news that one of the greatest magazine editors in Equestria is going to be here tonight!” An excitable, light coated earth pony named Sugar Cubes darted to Silver’s side. “I forget who they are exactly…. but it’s still so exciting!” A cheerful brown mare then stepped forward, “we’re in for a busy night, fully booked again! Hope you’re up for it Silver!” She gave a friendly wink. This was Cocoa; a waitress whom Silver Spoon considered her closest friend at work. “Always!” Silver grinned back at the group. The other staff members were clearly very happy to have the young filly working with them tonight, and she equally as happy to see them all. Once the shift began, Silver was in her element. She pulled out the chairs for her customers, presented their menus, took their orders and served their meals in record time. Every customer was impressed by the food as always, and each one gave Silver Spoon credit for her services, usually followed by a generous tip. Silver saved each and every tip she received, and kept the money in a piggy bank back at home, in preparation for the future. Working at her dad’s place was great for now, but Silver Spoon had big dreams. Once she had finished school and saved up enough bits, Silver wanted to move to a large city, perhaps Manehatten or Fillydelphia, and train to open and manage a restaurant of her very own. Ponies would travel from all over to try her high class food and beverages, and her place would be well known throughout Equestria. Silver dreamed about her restaurant all the time. She couldn’t wait to grow up, but for now, she thoroughly enjoyed her catering job. It was such a rewarding routine; collecting the orders, taking them to the tables, being praised, and then repeating the process. “Enjoy your meal,” Silver Spoon bowed her head politely after delivering a delicacy to a well-dressed unicorn family, “Please let me know if you need anything.” “This looks delicious!” A posh mare complimented the food placed before her. “Sure does!” Agreed her husband, who was slightly more rugged looking. “Y…yeah,” A much higher pitched voice spoke up, “Thank you…. Silver Spoon.” Silver froze. Her grey ears pricked up in shock - she knew that voice. Reluctantly, the filly glanced wide eyed into the face of the young customer. Into the face of… Sweetie Belle. For a few seconds, Silver Spoon couldn’t speak. She couldn’t move. Her heart began to pound as she tried to come to terms with the situation - and once she had, she instantly regretted it; Sweetie Belle couldn’t know she worked here! Diamond couldn’t know! She had to make up some sort of excuse… but… how? “Oh um, hello Sweetie Belle is it?” She stuttered nervously, clearly knowing the young filly’s name. “W…what are you doin… erm I mean it’s odd to see yo…” Sweetie Belle looked confused for a few seconds, but then replied happily, “My sister Rarity designed some amazing dresses for a performing arts company last month.” She motioned toward her sister; a beautiful unicorn with a swirling purple mane. “They paid her a lot, and so she’s treating us all to a luxury meal!” Silver gulped, “Oh I see. Urm, well, you see I don’t work her, I don’t really work here… I’m just um…” “Silver Spoon these need taking to table four!” A waiter nearby shouted impatiently. Sweetie Belle raised an eyebrow, and Silver gave an uneasy smile before darting over to collect the meals. For the remainder of her shift, Silver Spoon was on edge. Her entire body was shaking, and her heart thumped like a drum. She just couldn’t relax, her head was a total mess as she wondered what on earth Diamond Tiara was going to say when she found out about her little job; Sweetie Belle was surely going to mention it at school on Monday. Silver’s mind was going crazy. She was playing out scenarios in her head, imagining Diamond laughing at her, calling her a loser, and the rest of the class joining in. She began to feel light headed, and her breathing became heavy and uncontrollable as she tried her best to continue with the shift. And then, it happened – Silver Spoon crashed into a table and fell, dropping four meals all over the floor, and over herself. ~*~ “Silver Spoon? Silver Spoon, can you hear me?” Finally, the young mare opened her purple eyes. Silver’s vision was blurred, but she could just about make out the bushy moustache of the head chef. He seemed incredibly worried. “Wh... where am I… what happene…” As she steadily regained consciousness, Silver Spoon noticed that she was in the restaurants first aid room, lying on the small bed on top of clean white sheets. Her apron was stained with sauce, and she smelt of garlic and herbs. “You had a little accident my dear.” The chef spoke softly, “Don’t worry, your father is on the way.” “But… what about my shift… who’s going to… what about….” Silver stuttered. Then it hit her, “Oh no! Sweetie Belle!” The filly suddenly lept to her feet, much to the surprise of the chef. Her heart pounded violently, and she darted out of the room without thinking. Silver raced across the diner, toward the table where the unicorn family had been sitting... but Sweetie Belle and her family were gone. Silver Spoon was in a mad state of panic once more. All of the customers were staring at her, wondering why in Equestria one of the professional waitresses was dashing around so manically. She began hyperventilating, as scenes of Sweetie Belle cackling evilly played through her mind, followed by images of Diamond Tiara scolding her and calling her a loser. Tears welled up in Silver Spoons eyes, and it was through these tears that she saw… them. Sweetie Belle’s family were still in the restaurant. They were standing near the door, about to leave. In a panic, Silver Spoon headed in their direction, and Sweetie Belle turned to face her. “Sweetie Belle, can we talk?” Silver panted as she felt the sweat dripping from her forehead. Sweetie Belle looked totally confused, “Talk? What do you mean talk? About what?” The rest of the unicorn family were looking down at Silver Spoon, shocked by her behaviour. Silver hesitated for a moment before shouting, “It’s about school!” She grabbed Sweetie Belle by the hoof and dragged the unicorn outside. The restaurant was surrounded by beautiful plants and magnificent large trees. Silver Spoon pulled the young unicorn behind a hedge out of sight. Sweetie Belle was completely bewildered as she stood staring at the breathless grey earth pony. Back inside the restaurant, Sweetie Belle’s family looked at each other in confusion for a moment. Then her father - a laid back, rugged unicorn, spoke up; “Sounds important,” He concluded, “it’s nice to see two young fillies taking their school work so seriously.” His wife nodded in agreement, but Sweetie Belle’s sister Rarity rolled her eyes at their lack of concern, and headed off to find her sister. Silver Spoon struggled to collect herself. She frowned at Sweetie Belle, who maintained a puzzled expression. Silver really despised Sweetie Belle right now. She wasn’t sure what to do, or what to say, she simply stood there fuming with rage, looking hatefully at the young white unicorn. It was in fact Sweetie Belle, who spoke first. “Silver Spoon, whatever it is…” She began to say, “Listen here you little blank flank.” Silver snapped. She tried to look as threatening as possible, but it was difficult with her being in such a state of panic. “If you tell ANYONE, I mean ANYONE that you saw me working here, you will… I will… just don’t you dare or else!” Sweetie Belle was not intimidated in the slightest; she couldn’t understand Silver Spoon’s behaviour at all. “What? Why? Wait… or else what?” She asked, “Or else…” Silver was stuck; she had never actually threatened someone before, and had no idea what she was doing. She felt her knees beginning to shake, her eyes welling up once again, and then, she broke. “Just, just please don’t tell them Sweetie Belle.” She begged, “If anyone found out… if Diamond found out, just don’t tell them, okay?” Sweetie Belle couldn’t believe her ears; Silver Spoon was actually asking her nicely to keep a secret? This was the best! She struggled not to laugh but couldn’t prevent her mouth from forming a tiny smile. Then, the unicorn had an idea; “Alright, alright, Silver Spoon, calm down. I won’t tell any pony.” “You wont?” Silver’s face lit up, “Oh thank you Sweetie belle… you don’t know…” “I wasn’t finished.” Sweetie Belle interrupted. “I won’t tell any pony, under one condition.” Silver Spoons face dropped, she nervously waited to hear what the young unicorn had to say. “You leave me and my friends alone.” Sweetie said sternly, “No more calling us names, no more teasing us about not having out cutie marks, no more insulting us for no reason, just don't pick on us anymore, full stop.” “What?” Silver hated to admit it, but this request was far more reasonable than she had imagined it to be. Sweetie Belle had the ability to blank mail her, and yet this was all the filly was asking for? “Um okay.” She replied, “but what if Diamond Tiara…” Once again Sweetie Belle interrupted. “Just because Diamond Tiara does something, doesn’t mean you have to join in. Can’t you think for yourself?” This sentence rendered Silver Spoon speechless. She often felt as though, sometimes, she was indeed just going along with whatever Diamond Tiara was doing, but Silver didn’t realise that this was so clear to other ponies; and especially not to an air head like Sweetie Belle. Was she really that transparent? Suddenly, Rarity’s voice could be heard close by, “Sweetie Belle, come on it’s time to go, where are you?” Silver Spoon realised she had no time to argue, “Oh okay… deal.” She answered. “Great.” Sweetie Belle smiled, “Well, goodbye Silver Spoon!” The young unicorn pranced off merrily after her sister. Silver felt as though she was about to pass out with relief. She took a deep breathe, and made her way back to the restaurant, to apologise to the Chef and the rest of the staff. When Silver Spoon arrived at the entrance, she noticed that father had arrived, and was standing at the door with the head chef, who was undoubtedly telling him about his daughter’s odd behaviour. Silver Spoon anxiously raced over to the two of them, “Daddy! I’m so, so sorry for what happened. I just suddenly felt really light headed, and then, when I woke up I needed air, that’s why I ran I just… I’m not feeling well Daddy, that’s all.” “Aw poor kid,” The head chef replied, patting her on the head lightly, “The restaurant business can get very stressful at times, and for such a young filly like yourself...” Silver’s father, however, was not impressed. “Silver Spoon, you should have mentioned earlier if you were feeling unwell. You must have caused quite the ruckus in there, that kind of behaviour could be very bad for the business.” He sounded very annoyed. “Did you know we had a professional editor dining with us today? Imagine what she must think of your display. Do you know what something like that could do for our restaurants reputation?” Silver looked sadly at the floor, “I know Daddy... I...I’m sorry.” Her father then turned to the chef, “We had better be going. I’m very sorry for the trouble my daughter caused this evening.” The two left silently. Silver Spoon felt much calmer now, but she was extremely unhappy. Her dad was was clearly disappointed, and did not say a word during the walk home. As Silver gazed sadly up into the night sky, the stars twinkled back at her. She hadn’t felt this way in a long time; Silver often felt anxious, unappreciated, and down trodden, but this was the first time in years she had felt like such a… fraud. On top of that, she had let her father - and his business – down. She had let her silly pride get the better of her, and ironically made herself look ridiculous in front of everypony. Silver started to cry; she couldn’t imagine what the other staff at the restaurant must think of her now. Suddenly, the filly caught something in the corner of her tearful eye. It was there and gone in a second, but it was like nothing that Silver had ever seen before. A dark blue star appeared from the darkness. It glided across the sky, descending rapidly, and then vanished. “D…dad…” Silver Spoon turned to see if her father had noticed the strange light. The stallion ignored her, he looked straight ahead coldly, with a displeased expression upon his long face. When they arrived at home, it was getting quite late. “I…I’ll go to go to bed,” Silver said sadly, she began to walk upstairs, then looked back at her father and added hopefully, “Goodnight Daddy.” The stallion did not respond. He did not even look at her. Silver Spoon felt miserable; she wasn’t going to sleep well tonight. The distressed filly lay awake, tossing and turning, thinking about her job, about her father, and about whether Sweetie Belle was really going to keep her little secret. Silver wondered how she could possibly not join in if Diamond Tiara wanted to pick on the crusaders. It would look very suspicious, Diamond Tiara would get angry with her again, and perhaps even fall out with her completely. She had to find a way to avoid them, but Ponyville was such a small area, they saw the crusaders out and about all the time - how could she ever keep her friend away from them? > BFF's > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- As the sun began to rise high over Equestria, Silver Spoon rubbed her tired eyes and groaned. She always looked forward to her Saturday shopping trips with Diamond Tiara - but not today. Silver was certain that the two of them would bump into the Cutie Mark Crusaders if they ventured into town. If that happened, she wouldn't have a chance. Sweetie Belle may have promised to keep Silver Spoon’s secret as long as Silver didn't hassle them, but what if Diamond Tiara wanted to have some fun with those blank flanks? Di would be furious if Silver didn't back her up. Besides, even if she didn't join in, how could she be sure that dim-witted unicorn would keep her word anyway? If Sweetie Belle blabbed, she would surely be complete laughing stock, and what was worse – she would lose her best friend! The filly lay in bed for a while, wondering what to do. She could pretend to be sick, but that wouldn’t stop Diamond Tiara from going shopping without her. Silver Spoon concluded that she should go along with the shopping trip as normal, but she would keep a close eye out for the CMC. If she saw them, then she would find a way to distract Diamond Tiara, and get away as fast as possible – that was the plan. The drowsy mare reluctantly prepared herself for the day. Then, she gathered her largest - and most fancy looking - satchel, and set off to meet with her friend. The household maid greeted Silver at the entrance, “Good Morning Silver Spoon.” She bowed politely, “Did you sleep well?” “Not really Dustress,” Silver grumbled, “Sorry to hear that dear.” Dustress sympathised, “But you’ll be glad to know that your little friend Diamond Tiara is waiting for you outside!” “Huh?!” This caught Silver Spoon by surprise; Diamond never called for her. “I asked her if she’d like to come in, but said she would preferred to wait out in the sunshine.” Dustress explained. “Di!” Silver darted outside to greet her friend. “Silver Spoon, why didn’t you call for me this morning?” Diamond scolded her, “I was ready half an hour ago!” “Oh urm…” Silver hesitated, “I… guess I overslept, sorry Di.” The pink filly didn’t look impressed, “Don’t let it happen again.” She ordered, then headed off in the direction of Ponyville. “Wh… where are we going first?” Silver asked nervously as she trotted alongside Diamond Tiara. “I feel like a milkshake.” Di replied, “So let’s go to Sugar cube corner.” “O…okay…” Replied Silver Spoon. She really didn’t care about milkshakes, but knowing exactly where they were headed was crucial if Silver Spoon was going to be on her guard at all times. Sugar Cube Corner was a bakery and café. The building itself looked like a giant, brightly coloured cake. Candy and sprinkles decorated the exterior, the roof looked as though it had been coated with icing, and at the very top were three lights which resembled large candles. Silver Spoon couldn’t help but marvel at the magnificent design, but Diamond didn’t seem to care. She entered the café and headed straight for the counter, where Mrs. Cake – one of the bakers, greeted the two of them with a smile. “Miss Diamond Tiara, how are you? And it’s nice to see you as well Miss Silver Spoon!” Diamond rudely ignored Mrs Cake’s politeness, “Two milkshakes.” She placed some bits on the counter, “Strawberry and chocolate - to go.” Forever cheerful, Mrs Cake ignored Diamond’s attitude. “Pinkie, did you get that?” She asked the pink, frizzy maned mare who was stirring up some batter behind her. “What an excellent choice!” Pinkie Pie turned, so quickly that she had to steady the bowl in front of her before it tipped over, “They’ll be right with you!” She bounced up and down excitedly before leaving the room to prepare the milkshakes. Diamond grunted and whispered, “Half-full probably.” Silver Spoon chuckled; she didn’t care for Pinkie's antics much either. The bubbly earth pony soon reappeared, and handed the milkshakes over to Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon respectively. They were actually intact. “I love chocolate milkshakes!” Pinkie exclaimed, “But I love strawberry milkshakes too! You know what would be good? A chocolate AND strawberry milkshake! Oh… but that might be difficult to mix together… maybe we could put the strawberries on top… oh no! They would sink wouldn’t they? This is such a dilemma!” “Pinkie…” Mrs Cake gave her apprentice a glance, “Don’t you have cupcakes to make?” “Oh yes!” Pinkie Pie’s blue eyes lit up, she waved goodbye to Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon, “See you guys later! It’s always nice serving friends!” “Friends?” Di sniggered once Pinkie had returned to her batter, “She’s completely delusional.” Mrs Cake actually seemed a little saddened, having overheard the comment aimed toward Pinkie Pie. Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon left Sugar Cube corner, and found a nice little table to sit at and enjoy their milkshakes. It was a nice day, and many ponies were out and about enjoying the sunshine. Diamond was her usual self; confident and sassy, and making comments about pretty much every pony who passed by. “Raindrops could really use some mane extensions. Her style is so choppy, and she needs her split ends sorting out too.” Diamond said loudly as a yellow pegasus flew overhead. “Yeah,” Agreed Silver Spoon, “Those weather ponies are always flying around sorting out the sky in full view of us all. You’d think they’d make themselves a little more presentable.” Raindrops glanced down at the two, and then lifted her mane with her hoof, trying to work out if their comments were valid. A turquoise unicorn then skipped by their table in a cheerful manner, Diamond rolled her eyes, “And what’s with the way Lyra mindlessly prances around all day? She’s always so spaced out all the time; no wonder she can’t get a real job.” “She’ll never get anywhere in life if she doesn’t get her head out of the clouds.” Silver added. The unicorn turned her head as she overheard the remark, and Silver Spoon noticed her facial expression change; she looked rather hurt. “And is it just me," Diamond continued, spying her next victim, "or does Berry Punch’s perfume always smell like she’s just bathed in a giant pot of jam or something? There are so many different perfumes to choose from, made from actual flowers, so why in Equestria would you choose to smell like fruit?” “She probably doesn’t even use perfume.” Silver Spoon suggested, “She probably just rolls around on some grapes every morning.” This gained a hearty laugh from Diamond Tiara, which made Silver Spoon feel fantastic. A purple earth pony with a grape and strawberry cutie mark, stopped in her tracks. She lowered her head and kicked at the ground, then approached the two. “Well I am sorry if my essence isn’t to your liking your majesties.” She said sarcastically, before adding, “You kids are so rich, why don’t you go and buy yourself some manners?” Diamond Tiara’s face fell, and Silver Spoon suddenly felt scared; no pony ever confronted them. “Y..you can’t talk to us like that!” Diamond shouted at the grown mare, “I…I’ll tell my father!” “Pssh.” Berry Punch wasn’t fazed, “young lady, if your father is too busy to discipline you for your attitude, then he will be too busy to confront me for calling you out on it.” Diamond looked stumped and afraid. She really wasn’t expecting anypony to talk back to her. Silver Spoon gulped; she wanted to say something, something clever and funny that would render Berry Punch speechless and make her leave, but she was afraid, too. Silver Spoon hated being shouted at, it was another reason she felt comfortable being in the company of Diamond Tiara. Di could usually get away with anything, due to her and her families’ reputation. No pony else ever stood up to her, they all knew better than that, but Berry Punch clearly didn’t. A few seconds of silence passed by, Silver Spoon could tell that Diamond Tiara felt too uncomfortable to argue back. Then, finally, Berry Punch left. “What was her problem?” Silver managed to say, “We were only joking around…right Di?” Diamond scowled at the ground, “Shut up, Silver.” She replied. ~*~ After finishing their milkshakes, Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon headed into town to do some shopping. Diamond was in a bad mood. She said nothing to Silver Spoon, and even managed to purchase a few items by picking them up and handing the cash over to the sales ponies silently. Silver Spoon didn’t purchase anything, she wasn’t much of a shopper. Besides, Silver was almost certain that if she stopped to admire something, Diamond - being in such a foul mood - would probably just leave the store without her. For the next hour or so, Silver racked her brain, trying to think of some way to cheer Diamond up. She was so busy thinking, that she didn’t notice a purple ball heading straight for her. “Ouch!!” Silver rubbed her head as the ball hit her right in the face. She felt her glasses to make sure they were still intact, before looking up to see… them. “Oops… sorry about that Silver Spoon.” Scoolaloo sounded a little insincere with her apology. Silver Spoon froze. She didn’t feel angry; she felt sick. She stared up into the eyes of Scootaloo, then Apple Bloom, and finally, Sweetie Belle, and said nothing. “So you should be!” Diamond Tiara suddenly piped up, “Why in Equestria are you playing ball in the middle of town? You clumsy little blank flanks.” “We aren’t playing ball!” Apple Bloom answered, “Scootaloo just bought it and…” “A ball? That’s what you go shopping for?” Diamond Tiara laughed, she picked up the ball before turning back to the cutie mark crusaders “How old are you?” “G…give it back…” Apple Bloom stuttered, “its Scootaloo’s!” Diamond ignored her, “So what? You’re trying to earn your cutie marks in ball games now? What a lame way to spend a weekend!” “Just give us our ball!” Scootaloo demanded, "You should have asked more nicely, you useless little flightless pegasus.” Diamond taunted, she lifted her hoof and threw the ball behind her, “Catch, Silver!” The ball landed directly in front of Silver Spoon, but the anxious young filly did not try to catch it. Diamond looked irritated, but for once Silver Spoon was more focused on the reaction of Sweetie Belle; the unicorn who knew the secret which could ruin her life forever. “Silver Spoon, what are you doing? I said catch it!” Diamond Tiara looked annoyed, “Pick it up and throw it somewhere!” Silver didn’t know what to do, and so she did nothing. She looked at Di, then at Sweetie Belle, and felt her heart begin to pound. If she didn’t throw the ball, Diamond Tiara would be mad, but if she did, then Sweetie Belle would tell Diamond about her being a waitress. The young mare froze, and felt herself welling up. The cutie mark crusaders stood puzzled for a moment, and then Scootaloo approached the ball, and picked it up without a problem. “Wha….” Diamond couldn’t believe her eyes; why was Silver Spoon ignoring her? The grey filly felt her body begin to shake, and her breathing became rapid and uncontrollable. She scrunched her eyes, and said, “Sorry Di.” Then, she ran away as fast as she could. “Silver Spoon! Silver Spoon get back here!” Diamond called after her, Apple Bloom and Scootaloo watched, not quite sure what had just happened. Sweetie Belle didn’t say a word; she actually felt a little guilty. Diamond turned to face them, “What in Equestria have you three done to Silver Spoon?” She stomped her hooves, demanding a response. “What? We ain’t done nothin’ to her!” Apple Bloom replied, “I have no idea why she just ran off like that!” Diamond Tiara gritted her teeth, “Look here you little blank flanks. If I find out that you’ve done anything to my friend, you’re in big trouble, understand?” Sweetie Belle gulped, but Apple Bloom and Scootaloo weren’t intimidated. “I told ya, we ain’t done nothin’!” Apple Bloom repeated. “Grrr!” Diamond gave a final stomp, before setting off to find Silver Spoon. Silver raced through the streets, bumping into several ponies along the way. Finally, with tears streaming from her eyes, and her heart pounding faster than ever, she reached her home. Her father was at work, and the only pony present in the house was Dustress, the maid. She was busy cleaning in another room, but turned when she heard the front door open and close. When she went to investigate, Silver Spoon was already half way up the stairs, so she shrugged and continued cleaning. Silver Spoon was in a mad state of panic. She laid on her majestic king sized bed, and cried her eyes out. She was trying to rationalise the situation, but the more she tried to think of a way to fix everything, the more the visions of the Cutie Mark Crusaders and Diamond Tiara taunting her, corrupted her mind. This time, Diamond was calling her a freak and a coward, and making comments such as, “I can’t believe you ran away! You’re so pathetic.” and “I don’t know why I was ever friends with you, you’re just as bad as those blank flanks.” Silver cried more, “Di, Diamond no… no… please no.” The tearful filly then reached into a beautiful oak chest of drawers beside her bed, and took out a small pink book - it was a diary. She opened the velvet cover to reveal tons of scribbles, messy writing, and photographs of a young Silver Spoon, playing with her best friend, Diamond Tiara. The two used to spend almost every day together, and write each other letters during the times when they were apart. Silver Spoon had kept every single one. She began to read through the letters, one was from Diamond when she had pony-pox and had to stay off school for an entire week: “Dear Silver Spoon, I hate being ill, it’s so boring. Daddy says I need to get plenty of rest, but I want to go to the park with you. When I’m better we will have to go. The weather is nice and I have some amazing sun glasses to show off. See you soon, From your BFF, Di xx” Silver remembered that she had made a get well soon card for her friend on that particular occasion. She wondered whether Diamond Tiara still had it - probably not. Another letter was from when Diamond took a trip to Canterlot with her family. “Dear Silver, Canterlot is so cool. Everyone dresses like they’re famous or something. I wish you could see it. Maybe next time I’ll ask my Daddy if you can come too. Then we can dress better than all of them and be the best princesses. Missing you loads! From your BFF, Di xx” Silver Spoon smiled; she and Diamond Tiara always used to play princesses when they were younger. In fact, that is sort of how they met. She laid back and recalled the memory, having calmed down enough now to be able to control her own thoughts. It was Silver Spoon’s first day of Kindergarten. Originally, her parents had decided their daughter was to be given private tuition her entire life, but Silver wasn’t quite living up to the ridiculously high expectations of her strict tutor. It was Silver’s mother’s idea to send her to Ponyville Kindergarten… and the filly was terrified. As she entered the seemingly enormous building, Silver Spoon noticed the walls decorated with colourful patterns and pictures drawn by the other youngsters. Silver didn’t know any pony, and she had no idea how to make friends. Once Silver Spoon’s parents had spoken with the Kindergarten teacher, they patted her head affectionately, “You’ll be fine,” Her mother assured her, Silver Spoon’s mother was a beautiful purple coated earth pony. Her plaited mane matched her daughters, in both colour and style. Her tail was also braided, and her light grey eyes sparkled like real silver. The filly often wondered if she would ever grow up to be as pretty as her mother. Silver Spoon watched her dear parents leave, and was prompted by the teacher to make her way into class and introduce herself to the others. As the timid foal explored the classroom, she saw the young fillies and colts painting, playing with building blocks, and learning how to count. Silver had never really cared for painting, building blocks, or counting, and so she walked over to the small row of book cases at the far end of the area, and began browsing the shelves. She soon found a book she liked the look of, called 'The Moonlight Princess', and was about to open it when she heard a squeaky voice. “No Peppermint you can’t use that block for the ramp, it’s the wrong shape!” Silver Spoon peered around the other side of the book cases, where a very pretty young earth pony was sitting on top of a pile of blocks. Her eyes were a bright sky blue, and her mane was curly and streaked; she looked like a real princess. A red pegasus filly with a white striped mane was arranging books around the block pile, creating a wall around the back. She was using the building blocks to make steps, and trying to place a larger book over them to work as a ramp. She was having great difficulty finding blocks which formed a perfect slant, and as a result, the book kept sliding off. “It’s too steep!” Diamond Tiara complained, “Snips, Snails, where are you? Get over here will ya?” Silver watched two young male unicorns join the fillies. Snails was taller than the other ponies in class. He had freckles and a dopey expression. Snips was short and plump with a scruffy mane. The two carried flags which they placed either side of the tower. Peppermint lifted her head to admire the flats, and as she did, once again, the ramp fell to pieces, much to the disapproval of Diamond Tiara. “If you can’t build me a proper ramp, I’ll find some pony who can.” Diamond snapped. That’s when she noticed Silver Spoon. “Hey four eyes, come over here.” Silver gulped; surely this demanding young filly didn’t expect her to… “You look smart I guess, fix this bridge.” Silver didn’t say a word, she dropped the book she had chosen from the shelf, which caused Diamond to glance down and see the title. Peppermint, Snips and Snails watched as Silver Spoon removed the book ramp and began to rearrange the steps, making them more leveled. When she was finished, Silver Spoon placed the book back on top, and sure enough, it didn’t slide. Diamond admired her work. She looked very stern at first, then exclaimed, “Not bad! See Peppermint, that’s how you build a ramp fit for a princess!” The young red filly stuck her tongue out and left, whilst Snips and Snails continued fixing their flags. Diamond turned to Silver Spoon. “So, you like books about princesses too?” She asked, “This is one of my favourites, although I’m not big on reading, she looks really cool!” Silver smiled. Diamond seemed confused by her silence. “What’s your name?” The young grey filly looked up timidly, “Urm… It’s Silver Spoon…” Diamond tilted her head, “You look rich... is your family rich?” Silver Spoon wasn’t sure how to answer, “Well, I supposed, my Daddy buys a lot of buildings.” Diamond Tiara grinned, “Well Madame Silver Spoon, “Welcome to my Kingdom. Let me show you around…” Silver felt overwhelmed with delight. Diamond Tiara took her around the classroom, showing her the different activities and telling her all about the other ponies. Silver Spoon noticed that Diamond had good knowledge of the others, but she didn’t seem particularly fond of any of them. She would make comments such as, “That’s Mudpie, keep away from him, he eats mud.” And “Those are the twins over there, Orchard and Aviary, they aren’t very bright, but they’ll pretty much do anything you ask.” She spoke loudly, so that the poor young ponies heard every insulting word she said, but Diamond Tiara didn’t care at all. At the end of the day, Silver Spoon’s father was late collecting her. So Diamond took Silver over to her family, and introduced them, “Mommy, Daddy, This is Silver Spoon. She’s an upper class genius pony.” Diamond put a hoof around her new friend affectionately. Silver Spoon had never felt so happy. Diamond liked her, Diamond didn’t seem to like any pony else - but she liked her. The two became the best of friends. They even started playing together every day after school. They pretended to be princesses; Diamond Tiara would be Princess Celestia, and Silver Spoon would be Princess Luna, just like in the stories. Diamond Tiara was the only pony who thought that Silver Spoon was cool and special, and Silver Spoon thought that Diamond Tiara was cool and special, too. Back in her room, Silver Spoon wiped a tear from her eye and looked at all of the photographs the two had taken together, from the day they met, to the present day. Photos of them at the beach, in Manehatten, at one another's birthday parties, dressing up as Princesses; they had shared so many great memories together. Silver Spoon then closed the diary - which itself was also a birthday present from her best, and only friend. The distressed filly then lay on her back, hugging the book tightly to her chest. “It’s over.” She sobbed, “It’s all over.” ~*~ Suddenly, Silver was distracted by a knock at her bedroom door, and Dustress’s voice called in; “Miss Silver Spoon, you have a visitor!” “J…just a minute!!” The filly called back. Silver sat up and tried to rub her eyes dry; maybe it wasn’t over after all. Maybe Sweetie Belle had remained true to her word, and not told Diamond Tiara about her little secret. In that case, Silver could make up an excuse for her bizarre behavior. She could just tell Diamond that she ran away because she was sick of being around those blank flanks. Sure, her reaction was a little extreme, but that’s because she hated them so much… okay, that wasn’t very convincing, but it was all she had to go on. Maybe if she apologised, and if they had a great day out shopping together, Diamond would forget all about her running away. It was a long shot, but Silver Spoon had to try, she just had to. She left her room and ran down the stairs, panting as she spoke. “Oh Di, I’m so sorry… it’s just… you see… well I can’t stan….” Silver paused when she noticed the white unicorn standing in the entrance. The pony in front of her wasn’t Diamond Tiara – it was Sweetie Belle. Anxiety kicked in once again. Silver Spoon gasped and took a step back, “Wh… what are you doing here? Haven’t you ruined my life yet?” She snapped - how dare Sweetie Belle visit her home? The unicorn ignored her anger, “I came to see if you were alright Silver Spoon.” She replied. Silver was stunned, and so Sweetie Belle continued, shuffling her front hoof as she spoke. “I didn’t mean to black mail you.” She explained, “If it really means that much to you; if it’s going to cause you this much stress, then… I won’t say anything about you being a waitress. Not to my friends, not to Diamond Tiara, not to any pony...” The kind hearted young unicorn’s gentle words both surprised and soothed Silver Spoon. She was a little skeptical at first, but Sweetie Belle had come alone, and she looked pretty sincere. “But what if Di…what if we…are mean to you?” She asked. “Put it this way,” Sweetie Belle smiled, “We’ll just pretend like the whole restaurant thing never even happened. Wipe it clean from your memory, and I’ll do the same.” Silver couldn’t prevent her mouth falling open, she gathered herself before replying, “Sweetie Belle… after everything...t…thank you.” “It’s nothing.” Sweetie Belle turned to leave, but then glanced back at Silver and added, “But you know, perhaps you should tell Diamond Tiara yourself. It’s kinda cool you have a job and all. Not many fillies our age have that kind of responsibility; I think that Diamond Tiara would actually be pretty impressed.” The young unicorn smiled and skipped away. Silver Spoon couldn’t believe what she had just heard. Cool? She had never thought about it that way before. She pondered for a minute, and began to think that perhaps Sweetie Belle was right - it was kind of impressive. No other pony in their class had a job, well, apart from Apple Bloom - she worked at her families Apple Farm. Diamond Tiara often teased the young country pony for that, but working on a farm and working at a top five star restaurant were completely different things. It was almost as though having another pony’s opinion on her, had completely altered Silver Spoon’s opinion of herself. Sweetie Belle was not her friend, in fact, she was more like an enemy. If even she thought that it was cool that Silver Spoon had a part time job, then surely Diamond Tiara – her best friend – would think so too. After all, Diamond was the pony who thought she was cool in the first place. She had arrived at Kindergarten as a shy little four eyed outcast, and Diamond had taken an instant liking to her. Silver felt it in her heart that she and Di had a very strong connection. And now there was no doubt in her mind that Diamond would accept her, perhaps she would even even like her more. That’s when the filly decided that she had to tell Di, she had to tell her everything, and it had to be right now. ~*~ Silver Spoon searched all over town for her friend. She checked every store, ventured down every street, and even started asking the other Ponyville residents if they had seen her. “Excuse me mam,” She called to a green weather pony, “Have you seen my friend Diamond Tiara anywhere?” “Nope.” The mare replied, “And I’m sure glad that I haven’t!” Silver frowned; she didn’t like it when other ponies talked badly about her friend. Next, she confronted a smart earth pony the same question, “Hey Octavia, have you seen Diamond Tiara anywhere?” She asked hopefully; Octavia was always really polite. “Can’t say I have.” Replied the mare, “She’s probably off causing trouble somewhere.” Silver Spoon sighed; none of these ponies understood Di at all. After searching throughout Ponyville, Silver Spoon concluded that Diamond Tiara must have gotten annoyed and returned home. So she headed off in the direction of the manor. When she arrived, Silver Spoon suddenly became a bundle of nerves once more. She stared anxiously up at her friend’s bedroom window. The satin curtains were half closed, restricting her view. Just then, Silver noticed a figure. It was only present for a moment, but she made out a pointed ear, and a tiara. “Di, please, just hear me out!” Silver Spoon pleaded. The figure disappeared. The grey filly sighed; perhaps she really had blown it this time. She had let Diamond Tiara down, and left her alone with those blank flanks. Silver lowered her head and stared sadly at the ground, then turned to walk away, just as the front door of the manor opened. Diamond Tiara approached her silently; she did not look happy. Silver tried to remain strong, after all, she was going to tell her friend everything, right now. She was going to explain all about her job, about bumping into Sweetie Belle, about their secret deal… and Diamond would accept her - she knew she would. As the pink are friend approached, Silver took a deep breath. She was about to speak, but Diamond beat her to the mark. “What in Equestria was all that about?” She bellowed, “You made me look like a right fool in front of those blank flanks!” Once again, Silver felt her knees begin to shake, Diamond was fuming. “They were standing there all smug when you ran away - I was literally a laughing stock! You ran away, like a little cry baby, like you were afraid of them or something. You abandoned me Silver! I thought you were my friend!” “Di… I…” Silver’s voice was shaking; she had never seen Diamond Tiara this angry before. “Those stupid blank flanks are never going to let me live this down! They’ll think I’m a joke! That flightless pegasus, that dim-witted unicorn, and that pathetic work horse!” Silver gulped at the words ‘pathetic work horse’ Diamond often insulted Apple Bloom for working on her family’s farm - this was nothing new - but Silver then wondered if Diamond would think that she was a pathetic work horse, too. Her nerves came rushing back, and she suddenly concluded that perhaps now was not a good time to tell Diamond the truth after all. “Di I…I’m sorry, I’m sorry I… just…” And just like that, instead of explaining anything Silver Spoon began to sob. Diamond didn’t seem to care much for the reasoning behind Silver Spoons behavior - all she cared about was being humiliated in front of those blank flanks. She rolled her eyes as her friend continued to cry, and then turned away and began to walk back into her home. Diamond took a final glance at the distressed filly on her doorstep. Silver Spoon lifted the long plat in her mane, holding it up to her face in a hopeless attempt to wipe her eyes. She was whimpering, and shaking uncontrollably. Diamond sighed, and spoke in a much calmer tone; “Come with me, I… have something for you.” Silver looked up. She was stunned for a moment, but then hurriedly followed to keep up with Diamond Tiara. The inside of Diamond’s house was huge and beautiful. Everything from the walls, to the floor, to the decor glistened elegantly; it was like the inside of a palace. The walls themselves were covered in golden-framed paintings, and a magnificent glass chandelier hung from the ceiling. There were several maid ponies walking around, and a gigantic stair case which lead right up to the third floor. Without another word, Diamond headed upstairs, and along the corridor to her room, with Silver Spoon close behind. Diamonds room was beautiful; her king-sized bed had a brass frame, and she owned more toys than the entire pony Kindergarten and Daycare centre put together. Diamond lead Silver Spoon over to a pine desk in the corner. She opened the drawer, and held out four pieces of paper for her tearful friend’s attention – they were tickets. Diamond spoke firmly, “My family is going to Manehatten for the summer. They said I can bring a friend, so…” She handed one of the tickets to Silver Spoon, who looked up in amazement. Silver couldn’t believe her ears, she thought Diamond was furious with her, but she was inviting her to Manehatten? She instantly stopped crying and accepted the ticket. The two had visited Manehatten before when they were younger. It was an enormous city filled with famous ponies, top showcases, and restaurants suited for royalty. They had an incredible time, and it was one of Silver Spoons fondest memories. The grey fillies’ sadness subsided, and was replaced by overwhelming excitement and joy. “Thank you Di, thank you so much I… I’d love to go with you.” She looked down at the tickets, and then noticed the dates. “Wait, Di, these tickets… they’re for…” “Yup, five whole months.” Diamond smiled, “My daddy purchased a house in the city, and when it’s refurbished we’re going to stay with him. Daddy is going to be working with some of the top business ponies in Manehatten, and he’s gotten us a private tutor, so we won’t even have to go to school.” Silver could hardly contain herself; this was a dream come true. She was so relieved and thankful that Diamond hadn’t fallen out with her, and had instead given her this wonderful gift. “That’s incredible Di, thank you thank you so much!” She reached out and hugged her friend, Diamond patted her back a little awkwardly, then smiled, “Yeah yeah, I am pretty incredible. Now, are we going shopping or what?” Silver nodded, and the two headed out to spend the rest of the day together. > A Candle in the Wind > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Silver Platter paced up and down the hallway nervously; he didn’t know what to do. His daughter had caused a huge scene at the restaurant that previous night - how could he possibly let her work that evening's shift? The colt knew that Silver’s job was important to her, but it was even more important to him that the restaurant ran successfully. Platter scratched his head, he didn’t understand why his daughter had behaved the way she did. Her actions were so spontaneous, so uncontrollable, so much like… her mothers. Silver Platter approached the enormous oak cabinet which stood in the entrance hall. He opened one of the glass doors, and took out a beautiful heart-shaped locket. Inside the locket was a picture of a stunning unicorn, with a purple coat and pale white mane. This was Platter’s ex-wife - and Silver Spoons mother. Her name was Destiny Dream, and she was the love of Silver Platter’s life. As a young mare, Destiny Dream was a free spirited pony, always looking for adventure and excitement. She was very popular due to her outgoing personality, and she had many friends throughout Ponyville and beyond. Silver Platter - being an incredibly shy colt in his younger days - had a strong, growing crush on Destiny Dream, but kept his feelings a secret for years. He would sit and watch her from a safe distance, too afraid to approach or speak to the mare. Then one day, Platter decided that he couldn’t bare it anymore. Watching that beautiful unicorn prance around happily, completely unaware of the feelings he held towards her, was driving him crazy. Destiny didn’t even know who he was, and at this rate, she never would. He might just be some nerdy, timid little colt - but he didn’t want to be a coward on top of all that. Silver Platter decided to make a Hearts and Hooves day card for his crush, and bravely deliver it to her face to face. He spent a long time on the card, covering it with glitter and gemstones and drawing a cute pencil crayon picture of Destiny Dream on the front. Then, Platter gathered all of his courage, and set off to hand the card to his beloved Destiny Dream, before Hearts and Hooves day was over. As Platter was nervously trotting along, he thought about what he was going to say to Destiny, and how he was going to present the card in a cool and collected manner. Platter was so caught up in his thoughts that he wasn't really looking where he was going, and he trotted smack into a dull coated, snooty looking earth pony. When Platter apologised, the colt just looked annoyed, but then he noticed the card that Silver Platter was carrying. He chuckled at the drawing of Destiny Dream, and made fun of Platter’s ‘pathetic attempt’ to woo her. The taunting soon caught the attention of a few other ponies nearby, who joined in. And soon, to Platter’s horror, it caught the attention of Destiny Dream and her friends. As the unicorn approached to see what all the commotion was about, Silver Platter dropped the card out of fear and fled to the outskirts of town. Platter sat under a tree just outside of Ponyville, sobbing and wondering how he could ever face any of those ponies again. Suddenly, a purple hoof patted his shoulder, and the colt turned and looked up into the most beautiful crystal blue eyes in all of Ponyville. Destiny Dream didn’t say anything at first, she smiled and leaned forward, giving Silver Platter a peck on the cheek. Then, whilst the colt was frozen in a state of shock, she thanked him. “That card was really sweet." She said gently, "I never get Heart’s and Hooves day cards! Usually just ridiculously over the top gifts, from colts trying to compete with Filthy Rich’s latest artifact.” She pulled out a glistening golden horn ring, with a magnificent diamond that was almost too big for the frame. Platter thought it was incredible, but Destiny looked unimpressed. “It’s okay,” She commented, “but it’s not me, I don’t wear jewelry at all.” Silver Platter said nothing. The lump in his throat was so huge; it was impossible for him to form words. His heart was pounding, and he had absolutely no idea what was going on. He only knew one thing – that Destiny Dream was actually talking to him. “You’d think he would realise this.” The mare continued, “Anyway, thank you for the card, it looks like you worked really hard on it. To me, this is what Hearts and Hooves day is really about!” Silver Platter could hardly believe his ears. He wondered if this was some kind of joke, but Destiny was such a nice mare, and she spoke so sincerely. What the unicorn said next almost made him pass out, “Hey, would you like to hang out sometime?” Platter gulped, and shakily nodded his head, blushing like crazy. Over the next few months, the two started spending time together, and grew closer and closer. Destiny Dream adored Silver Platter, and supported him on his life goal; to open and run his own restaurant. The two saved some money and went travelling all over Equestria, trying the most popular cuisine and learning how restaurants operate. Destiny was really excited about travelling, and encouraged Silver Platter to follow his dreams. It was during their travels that Destiny fell pregnant, and the two returned to Ponyville to open the restaurant and start their family. Platter found a nice place to start his restaurant. At first it was a bit of a struggle, as he didn't have a whole lot of cash. He began by cooking the meals himself, steadily gaining recognition and customers. Soon the business expanded, and Platter started hiring other ponies to work there. It was difficult, but Platter dedicated himself to his dream, and put all of his time and money into it. At first, Destiny Dream was delighted at the thought of having a baby; she felt there was nothing more exciting than raising her own little filly or colt. However, as the months went by, the mare found her body failing her. She couldn’t move around as easily anymore, and therefore she could no longer do the things she enjoyed. She couldn't go out exploring the countryside, or go running, or dancing.... and she found it very hard to enjoy her new sheltered life. When their daughter, Silver Spoon was born, she was the most beautiful baby that Platter had ever seen. She had his coat and eyes, and her mother’s long, delicate mane. Destiny Dream loved Silver Spoon more than the world, but due to her wild, carefree attitude, being a mother was no easy task for her either. She had to stay in all day, taking care of her foal, constantly watching her and attending her every need. Being relatively young herself, and new to responsibility, she found this very, very difficult. Silver Platter had been so busy starting up his restaurant that he failed to notice his wife’s struggles. The two barely saw one another anymore, as Platter would leave early for work, and then return late at night. Destiny Dream would usually still be up with Silver Spoon, but she was always far too tired and agitated to talk. And so Platter would simply say goodnight, and head off to bed. He too was exhausted, and rarely managed to get enough sleep. Years passed by, and the pair continued on with the same routine. Until one day, when Destiny Dream snapped. Silver Platter rubbed his head as he recalled the painful memory: plates flying everywhere, smashing on the floor, and his terrified daughter hiding under the kitchen table while his wife cursed him. "It's your fault!" She screamed, "I never wanted to settle down! I never wanted this!!" Platter was stunned by Destiny Dream's sudden outburst; what could she possibly have to be so stressed about? He was the one who worked all the time, he was the one providing this family with everything they needed. He thought he was doing a pretty good job; he thought things were perfect. "What's gotten into you?" He asked, "has something happened?" These words only enraged the mare further, "What do you mean 'has something happened'?!" She snapped, "Things have beenhappening for years! You would know that, if you were ever here! Oh by the way you have a daughter, do you realize?!" She pointed at Silver Spoon, The filly, now in Kindergarten, was clutching to a table leg bawling her eyes out. "I never wanted any of this!!" Destiny Dream bucked a cupboard, smashing the wooden door. Then, she fled. ~*~ “Why…” Platter whispered as he held the locket, “Was it really… my fault?” Suddenly the front door opened, and his daughter entered the house, looking rather cheerful. “Hi Daddy.” Silver Spoon greeted him politely, “How was your day?” “It was fine, thank you.” Platter replied, quickly placing the locket back into the cabinet. “Glad to hear it.” Silver smiled happily, “Well I’ll just go upstairs and get ready for work.” No sooner had Silver Spoon stepped hoof on the staircase, when her father spoke again. “Wait.” The filly turned. She was expecting some kind of lecture about keeping her head together tonight - but what she actually got was far worse. “Silver Spoon, I think it would be better if you took the rest of this weekend off.” Her father stated coldly, “I’ve spoken with the chef, and he agrees that it would be best for your own health. We have found a replacement waitress to cover your shifts.” “Cover… my…” Silver Spoon couldn’t believe her ears. She messed up once and her father replaces her for the whole weekend? What in Equestria would he do if she told him she was planning on going to Manehatten for five months? “B… but Daddy! I’m fine!” She replied, “I’m feeling much better today!” “Even so.” The stallion answered, “It’s for the good of my business Silver Spoon.” There was no point in arguing, Silver knew that. Her father was firm, and wouldn't change his mind. The saddened filly turned away for a second, in an attempt to hide her disappointment. She was going to head straight upstairs and be miserable out of sight, but.... she just had to know. “This other waitress" She asked, "who is she?” “She’s a unicorn who used to work at the Ponyville café.” Her father explined, “She’s very professional. We hired her to cover weekday shifts, but she’s going to be doing a weekend or two when one of the other staff… isn’t up to it.” “But… I am up to it!” Silver Spoon couldn't help herself. Hearing about this 'professional' was making her flustered. “Please Daddy, you know how much I love…” The colt sighed, “It’s one weekend Silver Spoon; it’s not like she’s replacing you for good. Please don’t make a big deal of this, daddy’s got a headache.” Silver Spoon remembered that she wasn’t going to win the argument, and so she quietly headed her room. “…but it is a big deal.” She muttered under her breathe as she climbed the staircase. ~*~ Silver Spoon had a stylish bedroom. It was smaller than Diamond Tiara’s, but beautifully decorated. The wall paper was lilac with a floral pattern, and a light grey boarder complimented the curtains and carpet. Her double bed had a metallic frame, with hearts welded into the base. In the corner of the room was a large dressing table, similar to the one Diamond had in her room. Silver sat down at the dresser, and tried to cheer herself up by looking at the Manehatten ticket. She couldn’t wait to go with Di and her family to visit the magnificent city. However, Silver Spoon had no idea how she was going to tell her father about this five month trip. Would he be mad? Would he even allow her to leave? She looked bitterly into the eyes of her own reflection. “Nah,” She reminded herself, “He’s got that other waitress now…a unicorn.” Silver couldn’t help it - she was jealous. They had new staff ponies every now and then, but none had ever covered one of her shifts. Silver never had days off, she never wanted days off, and she certainly didn’t want this day off. The more she thought about it, the more Silver Spoon became desperate to find out just who this new waitress was. Then, she had an idea. She was going to visit the restaurant that evening anyway, to thank the head chef for looking after her when she collapsed. She would arrive just before the other staff turned up for their shift, and hang around long enough to meet the new waitress. And so, after carefully thinking through her plan, Silver headed downstairs to talk to her father once more. She found the colt in the sitting room, enjoying a cup of tea. “Daddy,” The filly timidly approached her dad. “I’m sorry for being so difficult earlier. I was out of line. I understand that you don’t want me to work anymore shifts this weekend.” Silver Platter turned his head, “I’m glad to hear that Silver Spoon.” He replied, then continued sipping his tea. “Anyway,” Silver replied. “If it’s okay with you, I’d like to go to the restaurant anyway, to apologise to everypony and thank the chef for looking after me.” “I’m not sure it’s a good idea for you to visit the restaurant just yet.” The colt replied coldly, Silver Spoon hesitated before responding; “Yeah, you’re probably right. I just thought that I should make a formal apology to the staff, and clear things up. They might be talking to the head supervisor about me, you know how loud she can be. I just didn’t want any more ponies knowing. It could be bad for the business if any customers overheard.” At those words, Silver Platter’s ears pricked up. “That’s a good point.” He pondered for a minute, “Don’t be long, and if you feel the tiniest bit ill, leave immediately.” “Y…yes Daddy!” Silver Spoon tried not to sound too happy about her father’s change of heart; she didn’t want him getting suspicious. The filly left her home, and headed over to the restaurant. Silver had to play it cool; the chef would be too busy preparing the kitchen to chat with her for long, and the head supervisor seemed to be busy doing something in the other room. The other staff hadn't arrived yet, it was a little early. Silver Spoon wasn't sure she was even ready to face them after last night's events, but she had to meet the new waitress, she just had to. She calmly entered, and made her way over to the kitchen. The plump chef was overjoyed to see her, “Silver Spoon! What are you doing here? How are you feeling?” He asked considerately, “Oh I’m fine than you,” Silver smiled, “Great actually, but my father says I need to take the weekend off.” “Yes my dear, your father was quite adamant; he must be very worried about you.” The chef replied. This surprised Silver Spoon; her father told her that he and the chef had made the decision together. Silver shook it off; she had to remain cool. “I’m sorry about all the trouble I caused. Thank you so much for taking care of me.” She bowed her head politely. The chef chuckled, “It’s no problem at all, my dear. Take care of yourself today; don’t want my top waitress getting ill.” He gave a quick wink. Silver smiled, that jolly stallion had a way of making her feel content. Suddenly, Silver heard the door of the restaurant open, and a group of ponies entered. The other workers lived much closer than Silver Spoon, and usually arrived together. When they saw Silver, they all hurried over to greet her, and to make sure she was okay. A small semicircle gathered around her, “Silver Spoon, what happened? Are you alright?” Cocoa asked, concerned. “I’m fine" Silver smiled, "it was just an accident.” A stallion put his arm around her, “We were so worried, are you sure you’re okay?” “Yes Trigger, thank you for asking, but I’m really fine.” Silver convinced them, Silver Spoon then looked over the group; she recognised every pony there, so... who was doing her shift that night? She wasn’t sure how to ask about the new waitress, but she had to drag this out a little longer if she was going to find out. “I felt a bit light headed yesterday, but I am alright now, I’ll be working here next weekend.” To the young ponies’ disappointment, the other staff didn’t mention anything about her replacement. They did however looked incredibly relieved, and happy to see her. Then one of the waiter stallions added, “That’s great news; we sure are going to miss you today.” Realizing she wasn’t getting any information; Silver thanked her co-workers for their kind words, and said her goodbyes. She felt disappointed, yet strangely content; the other workers weren't angry with her at all. They didn't think she was 'strange' or 'unruly', they were just glad that she was okay. Even if she hadn't gotten to meet the new waitress, visiting the restaurant that evening had still been pretty worth it, and put her mind at ease. The filly was about to leave and let the staff get on with their work, when suddenly the head supervisor pony entered from the diner. The head supervisor - Mrs Sizzle, was in charge of all the staff. She trained them up, and gave them their positions. She too was a unicorn, just like the chef and the majority of the staff. She had a tall, slender figure, and a dark crimson coat. Her light mane was tied in a neat bun, and her tail had been trimmed. Mrs Sizzle was a very loud-mouthed character, and Silver hoped with all her heart that she didn't know too much about last night's incident. Mrs Sizzle was followed by a teenage mare; one whom Silver had never seen before, and yet instantly recognized as 'the new waitress.' The amber coated unicorn looked mature, beautiful, and professional. Her dark black mane that was platted in a similar way to Silver Spoons, and tinted with orange highlights, giving her a fashionable yet elegant style. Her bushy tail was wavy and streaked in the same way. Her cutie mark was a candle, but the flame was shaped like a heart. The group of work ponies lifted their heads, intrigued - they had never seen this new mare either. It was now clear to Silver Spoon that none of the staff were aware there even was a new waitress. Mrs Sizzle had been showing the new employee around the diner all morning, and talking her through her duties, so she had yet to meet anypony. The head supervisor was usually stern and rather snooty, but appeared to be in a good mood this morning for some reason. “Every pony, this is Candlelight.” She approached the group, followed by the unicorn. “She has a lot of experience, and I think she will be a great asset to the team.” Candlelight smiled at the group, “It’s great to meet you all. I’m very eager to get to work!” Silver Spoon’s mouth fell open. This new waitress was magnificent; she seemed full of confidence, very presentable, and to top it all off, she was a unicorn. Silver was beginning to notice that unicorns seemed to be the preferred race for jobs like that. They had no trouble carrying numerous meals and drinks at one time, as they had magic to help them. Silver couldn't help feeling a little bitter; if she had been born a unicorn, she could probably have caught the meal she had dropped the previous night. As the other ponies greeted Candlelight excitedly, Silver Spoon remained silent; she wasn’t sure quite how to feel. She watched them all give a warm welcome to her replacement, and tell Candlelight how happy they were have her, and became a little agitated. Silver reminded herself that Candlelight was from Ponyville café; so maybe she would crack under the pressure of working at a busy high maintenance restaurant. Thoughts went through her mind of Candlelight being overly stressed, crashing into tables, taking the wrong orders - and she began to feel a little better, when suddenly the unicorn addressed her; “You must be Silver Spoon. Your father told me all about you. It’s very impressive that a young filly like yourself is so successful in the catering industry. I’m sure I can learn a lot from you.” She smiled politely, Silver suddenly felt guilty. Great, Candlelight was nice too? That made it much harder to dislike her. “Thanks, I look forward to… working with you,” Silver Spoon smiled awkwardly. “Well, anyway… I’d better be going, good luck on your first shift.” She hurried past the group and out the door. The other ponies didn’t seem to notice; they were all busy introducing themselves to Candlelight. After everyone had met, the head supervisor spoke up; “Alright every pony, I know it’s rare that we ever have new employee’s here, but excitement's over, time for work! Get to your stations.” The group separated, and entered the diner and kitchen depending on their duties. The supervisor then turned to Candlelight, “Why don’t you go and lay out the menus? Four on every table, just like I showed you.” The chef gave a wink of encouragement. Candlelight nodded, and the head supervisor and chef left her to it. ~*~ Meanwhile, outside, Silver Spoon was trying to look in through a window to the diner. She wanted to see this new mare in action; she wanted to see if she really was as perfect as she seemed to be. The windows were quite high up, so the filly climbed onto a plant pot and held the trunk of a small pear tree for balance - but she was still too short. Silver tiptoed on the edge of the pot, and tried to lift herself up using the window ledge. Suddenly the window opened outwards, and the young pony fell, hitting the stone ground. “What do you think you’re doing?” An angry voice snapped at her. Startled, Silver looked up - into the cyan eyes of the new waitress, Candlelight. “Are you trying to spy on me squirt?” The unicorn suddenly didn't look so friendly - she looked downright menacing. Silver wasn't sure whether or not to get up. Candlelight lifted an eyebrow, then grinned, “Aw what is it? Do you think I’m taking your job?” Silver was speechless - how did she know? Candlelight continued talking in a rather hushed manner, just in case one of the other staff entered the area and overheard. “Your father said that you were far too young to handle this much responsibility." She taunted, "He said that you look tired out after work, and your teacher says you’re always late for school; children should take their studies seriously.” Silver Spoon couldn’t believe her ears; her father had never even seen her work. He owned the restaurant, and had worked in it for a while when he was younger, but now he always hired other ponies to manage and run it for him. How could he possibly decide that she couldn’t handle her job? “You see, the other staff seem to like you, but really they’re just being nice to you because you’re a kid. They need someone older; someone who won’t screw up and collapse halfway through a shift." Candlelight continued "So your father gave me the job. He said if I do well enough, I could even become the next supervisor.” Candlelight talked fairly quickly and without hesitation; it was as though she had been planning this speech for a long time, “I need this job. That stupid café wasn’t paying nearly enough for my services. I’m not going to be outshone here by some little brat. You just stay out of my way and try not to mess up and cause a scene again, or I’ll have to have a word with your father. Understand?” Silver gulped, she was terrified. “Good.” Candlelight slammed the window shut just as Mrs Sizzle entered the diner. Silver lay on the ground outside, and felt herself welling up. What on earth was she going to do? She wished she was brave like Diamond Tiara; Diamond would never let any pony push her around. ~*~ The following day, Silver felt extremely on edge. She wanted to be happy about Manehatten, but felt as though her job at the restaurant was in jeopardy. There was absolutely no way Silver Spoon was going to turn down her trip with Diamond Tiara. Di was her best friend, and her family had already paid for Silver Spoon to go with them. Besides, Silver wanted to go, more than anything; even if it meant that Candlelight would be covering her shifts for five whole months. Besides, Silver Spoon was pretty sure that working at the restaurant wasn’t going to be all that fun anymore, with that bossy, hot-tempered unicorn around, who apparently already hated her. Silver Spoon had another day off work, which meant that today she could spend more time with her best friend. Usually on a Sunday, Silver and Diamond Tiara would hang out in the morning, but Silver would tell Di that she had violin practice in the afternoon. She had chosen this lie carefully; Di herself played the grand piano, she had lessons after school, which her parents arranged to keep their daughter out of trouble. Therefore, although Di could brag about how much cooler it was the play the grand piano than it was to play the violin, she couldn’t really look down on Silver Spoon too much. Silver headed over to her friend’s house. She expected Di to be getting ready in her room like usual, but oddly enough, when Silver approached her friends manor, the front door flew open, and Diamond stood there with beaming grin. “Oh hey Silver Spoon!” She greeted her friend. “Hey Di.” Silver had never seen Diamond Tiara looking so happy before - she was a little concerned. “Nice day!” Diamond commented, looking at the sky, “You wanna go for lunch?” Silver couldn’t believe it; Di was asking her if she wanted to do something? Usually, Diamond would just announce what they were doing that day, and Silver Spoon would go along with it. “S…sure.” She replied cautiously, As the two set off for Ponyville, Diamond Tiara's mood didn't change at all. After walking for ten minutes without Di insulting anypony or making any rude comments, Silver Spoon just had to know what was going on. "You seem really happy today Di." Silver Spoon commented. Her friend grinned wider, as though she had been dying for Silver Spoon to point out her good mood all morning, “My parents said they have a huge surprise for me.” Diamond told her, “Do you know what that means?” Silver could only imagine; Diamond’s parents bought her all kinds of expensive things on a regular basis. If they had built something up to Di as a 'huge surprise' it was bound to be something pretty huge indeed. “They went to collect it this morning, and they won’t be back till tonight." Diamond answered her own question, "They must be travelling a long way, it has to be something really incredible!" The filly skipped a little, “Daddy always promised he would buy me my own jewelry store some day! That must be what it is! I'm so excited!" Silver Spoon was relieved to hear that Diamond's sudden pleasant attitude was nothing to be concerned about. The two visited Lucky Charm Café, a country style eatery in the middle of town. Diamond Tiara was normally a lot fussier about where they went for lunch, but today her mind was on one thing. This was fine with Silver Spoon, and she decided to make the most of her friend’s good mood. Diamond Tiara continued to talk about her new jewelry store, "It's going to be the best jewelry store in all of Equestria!" She insisted, "With gold and silver, necklaces, broaches, earrings. Don't even get me started on the gemstones, I'll have rubies, crystals... oooh and sapphires, a whole section dedicated to sapphires!" "That's amazing Di!" Silver said when she could finally get a word in, "I wonder where it's going to be based." "Hopefully no where around here." Diamond replied, "I was wondering if it's in Manehatten. Maybe when we go there this summer, I'll already have my own shop. Then he can run it until I'm old enough to take charge. Maybe that's what he's going to be working on with those top business ponies! I wouldn't have to leave Manehatten! I can stay there, forever!" "Wha..." Silver Spoon was taken back by those words. It hadn't hit her that if Diamond Tiara was getting her own jewelry store, she might not be able to live in Ponyville anymore. Diamond didn't seem to notice her friends face suddenly drop. “So… your dad would be running the place, but you would technically own it?" She asked, forcing herself to look happy. “Probably.” Diamond Tiara answered, “I wouldn’t want to do the manual work anyway. I’d just choose what they sold, decide on the designs and the prices - cool stuff like that. And of course it would be named after me.” “That… sounds fun.” Silver was finding it more and more difficult to sound genuine. “Yeah, I figured I’d be better at that kind of stuff.” Di boasted,“As for all the financial mumbo jumbo, I think you’d be able to handle that.” Suddenly, Silver Spoon lifted her head. “M…me?” “Well, yeah.” Diamond said, as though it was obvious that she wanted Silver to work with her, “I get my say on the staff, and you are my best friend after all.” Silver Spoon felt overwhelmed with joy when Di said those words. It felt as though a new door was being held open for her. Leaving the restaurant would be tough, but those guys didn't need her anymore; not now that they had Candlelight. Silver loved waitressing; it was her life, but then again, she had never really tried any other line of work. Perhaps she would enjoy working at Diamond Tiara's jewelry store, alongside her best friend. They could head for the top, together, making customers happy and becoming successful throughout Equestria. And so, Silver Spoon made a mature decision, putting her past dreams and ambitions behind her to make way for new ones. Her future restaurant could wait for now - her best friend needed her. "Thank you so much Di." She smiled, "I would love to live in Manehatten with you, and work at your jewelry store." > Issues at Hoof > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- For once, Silver Spoon actually managed to get a decent night’s sleep. She dreamt fondly of Manehatten, and the jewelry store that she and Di would be running together in the not-so-distant future. The more she thought about it, the more Silver Spoon fell in love with the idea of working alongside her best friend, and the less afraid she became of telling her father about her having to leave the restaurant. Despite her new attitude, Silver Spoon still decided to wait a little longer before breaking the news. The holidays weren't for another month, and she didn’t want to make things awkward between the two of them, or lose any more shifts during that time. The money would come in handy for Manehatten, and she had to make the most of the time she had left with her colleagues. Silver Spoon was so happy and excited, that she had almost completely forgotten about her little conflict with Candlelight the previous night. The whole situation seemed so minor in comparison to the bright future which undoubtedly lay ahead of her. Diamond Tiara was a good friend – no, a great friend, and she was the only pony who deserved Silver Spoon’s attention right now. No one else mattered. As Silver merrily headed to school, she started to imagine how different life in Manehatten would be. She watched the many pegasi arranging the clouds overhead, preparing the weather for the day. Silver knew that there weren’t many pegasi in Manehatten; their kind preferred to live in more open areas, where they could stretch their wings and fly long distances without having to worry about crashing into buildings. As a result, the weather in Manehatten was far less diverse than it was in Ponyville. Each time Silver Spoon had visited the city with Di, both the weather and the temperature had always been pretty neutral. It occasionally rained, but never for very long, and they never had heatwaves or storms either. Silver concluded that as Manehatten didn’t occupate as much agriculture as Ponyville, there wasn’t as much demand for excessive sunlight or regular rainfall. The shops in Manehatten were majorly different. Even the busiest areas of Ponyville were relatively pleasant to visit, and never overly crowded. Shopping in Manehatten could take a very long time, there were plenty of queues despite the stores being enormous. However, Manehatten had such a wide range of stock which was shipped in from all over Equestria, and so customers were always spoilt for choice. Everything was top brand too, and therefore pretty expensive - not like in Ponyville. Silver Spoon wondered how long it would take before their jewelry store became busy and successful. Not long, she concluded - not if Di and her father had anything to do with it. Their family was loaded, and as soon as the place opened there would probably be billboards and other advertisements on every corner of Manehatten. The customers would come flooding in, and the place was guaranteed to be a huge success. On the way to Di’s place, Silver Spoon maintained her high spirits. She was looking forward to the walk to school with her best friend. She and Diamond Tiara could chat more about Manehatten, and discuss all the pretty jewelry they were going to be selling. She arrived at Diamond’s manor at the usual time, and waited patiently outside for her friend, still daydreaming away. A few minutes passed by, and Di made no appearance, but Silver Spoon wasn’t fazed; she wouldn’t have to worry about being late to school for very much longer. “The sapphires will be the best of all.” She muttered to herself, “They’d look beautiful together with silver, opposed to gold. Gold would work better for the rubies….” After five more minutes, Silver Spoon was deep in thought, and there was still no sign of Diamond Tiara. Silver was admiring the pearl beads around her neck, wondering if they could create something in a similar design to sell. The beads were a gift from her mother, and Diamond Tiara had always admired them. Silver Spoon pondered for a while, and then it hit her. “We could make a matching pair of earrings!” She gasped excitedly at the mental breakthrough. Silver noticed that she was talking rather loudly to herself, and a few ponies were giving her strange looks for it; but she didn’t care. She wouldn’t have to see any of the Ponyville residents again once she was living it up in Manehatten; they could think whatever they wanted about her. It took a while for the filly to notice that ten whole minutes had passed by. In fact, she was so lost in her brainstorming that she had almost completely forgotten about school altogether. Then, there was a noise. It sounded like a bang, as though something was being struck, or hit, or kicked. Silver Spoon took a single step closer to the door, she could hear some shouting, followed by stomping. And then, she jumped back in shock as the door flew open and almost hit her smack in the muzzle. “D…Di…?” Her friend’s face was a scarlet colour, and her eyes were soaked and sore. Her usually perfectly primed mane looked as though it hadn’t seen a brush at all that morning, and thick mascara had dripped down her cheeks, staining them. Silver Spoon stared as Diamond strode past with her head down. She didn’t say anything. “Di… what’s happened?” Silver called to her friend, but there was no response. “Di?” ~*~ Diamond Tiara walked at a fast pace, scowling at the ground, paying no attention to the confused and concerned filly struggling to catch up with her. After a few minutes, Silver Spoon gave up calling Di’s name, but continued to follow in hopes that sooner or later, Diamond Tiara would acknowledge her presence. The filly grew more and more anxious – what could possibly have happened since yesterday to upset Di so much? Then, Silver Spoon realised something: If Diamond Tiara’s father had meant for his daughter to stay in Manehatten, then why had he purchased return tickets for a mere five months later? Jewelry stores weren’t something that ponies could just start up on a whim, and Filthy Rich - being the organised business pony that he was – would’ve most likely had something like this planned out for a long time. Silver Spoon had been so lost in her daydreams, that she had forgotten that the whole ‘Jewelry store’ idea had never truly been confirmed. All Diamond Tiara really knew, was that her family had a huge surprise for her, the rest was entirely in her head. At first, Silver Spoon felt pretty depressed herself at this realization. However, Diamond Tiara was a headstrong pony, with a strong sense of self-image. There was no way she would get this upset over something like that - at least not in public. She would brush it off, not allowing herself to look weak in front of Silver or any pony else. Besides, Filthy Rich usually gave his daughter anything she wanted, if she made enough of a fuss, he probably would promise to buy her a jewelry store at some point anyway. No, what had upset Di that morning was something else - something much, much bigger. Silver Spoon decided to forget about her own disappointment for the time being; her friend was far more important, after all. Other ponies looked on in confusion; they had never seen Diamond Tiara so miserable, but for once, Di didn’t seem to care one bit. Silver didn’t like this - she had to know what was wrong. The filly hurried ahead of Diamond Tiara, and stood in her way. “Di! Di! Answer me!” Silver demanded. Finally, Di lifted her head. Her eyes welled up a little, but she scrunched her face and gave them a quick wipe with her hoof. “Please Di…” Silver lightly touched her friend’s shoulder, in an attempt to comfort her. Diamond turned her head and paused for a minute, as though she was contemplating what to do. Then, she made up her mind. With a single swipe Diamond Tiara coldly brushed off her friend’s hoof. She gritted her teeth, and her face flushed red once more whilst her right ear twitched agitated manner. “Get out of my way Silver Spoon.” She snapped viciously. Then, Diamond shoved past Silver and continued the walk to school alone. As she watched Diamond disappear over the horizon, Silver felt her stomach wench. She had no idea what could possibly have happened to make Diamond so unhappy. She didn’t even care about the jewelry store anymore, in fact, she didn’t care about anything; she just wanted to know what was wrong with her friend. ~*~ Throughout the day, Diamond’s mood only worsened. She gave fierce glares towards every pony she passed, all of whom were just as confused as Silver Spoon. Sure, Diamond Tiara was normally unfriendly and bitter, but today she was downright terrifying, not to mention completely out of character. The irritable filly didn’t once try to insult any pony - not even the cutie mark crusaders. She remained silent and withdrawn, and at times her body seemed to be shaking - it was almost as though there was a vicious storm brewing inside of her, which she was struggling to contain. When the school day finally ended, Miss Cheerilee approached Diamond Tiara at her desk, and spoke in a hushed, soothing tone. Silver couldn’t quite make out what their teacher was saying, but Diamond didn’t take it well. “Just leave me alone!” She snapped, bashing the desk hard with her front hooves. Then, Diamond stormed out of the classroom, forcing the other students out of her path – Silver Spoon included. Silver desperately wanted to follow, but she was afraid. Clearly Di just wanted to be by herself. So instead, Silver decided to wait until the other students had left the room, and then approach Miss Cheerilee. The teacher was an understanding pony, who was always willing to help out any of her students with their problems. “Miss Cheerilee…” Silver Spoon felt rather timid about asking her teacher for help. It was something she had never done before, in fact, she and Miss Cheerilee had never properly spoken one on one. However, Cheerilee didn’t seem at all surprised to see Silver. “Hello Silver Spoon, how are you feeling?” The kind-hearted teacher asked her pupil. “Urm… well I’m fine… but…” “Diamond Tiara… isn’t?” Cheerilee finished her sentence. “Yeah.” Silver answered sadly, “I just… don’t know what to do.” Cheerilee looked sympathetic, “I thought maybe the two of you had fallen out.” She replied, “but by the looks of it, you’re just as clueless as me.” Silver Spoon felt herself starting to cry. Miss Cheerilee put a hoof around her. “You know, it’s usually good to try and cheer up your friends, but sometimes it’s best to give them a little space. I’m sure that deep down, Diamond Tiara knows how worried you are about her, and there will be a time when she needs somepony to talk to.” Silver Spoon wasn’t so sure those words were true. Diamond Tiara wasn’t the kind of pony who depended on others. She was strong and self-reliant; she would never ask for help. Cheerilee seemed pretty certain of it though, “When that time comes, you’ll be there for her, won’t you?” She asked Silver. “Of course I will.” Replied the filly, as she desperately tried to cease her sobbing. ~*~ For Silver Spoon, the walk home felt strange without Diamond Tiara by her side, and seemed to take much, much longer. Silver hoped with all her heart that Di would be feeling better the following day, but it didn’t happen. In fact as the week progressed, Di became more and more angry. She would sit at her desk, scrunching paper, or biting her pencil. No pony dared approach her, and even Miss Cheerilee seemed a little cautious. Silver Spoon however, didn’t give up hope that Diamond Tiara would eventually return to her usual self. For the next few mornings, she waited patiently outside her friend’s home. Di didn’t look the slightest bit happy to see Silver Spoon, but never the less, Silver followed her to school and kept a close eye on her throughout the day, looking for any sign of the old Diamond Tiara. Then one day, Di stopped turning up to school altogether. Silver Spoon was frantic with worry when Diamond Tiara didn’t show up to class, especially since Miss Cheerilee hadn’t been informed of her absence. “Don’t worry Silver Spoon.” The teacher assured her, after Silver had approached her once again, “it is my duty as a teacher to communicate well with the parents and guardians of all my pupils, I will write a letter to Diamond Tiara’s parents and we will get to the bottom of this.” Silver Spoon nodded, but she couldn’t wait that long. Life without Di was too hard, she had to find a way to get to the bottom of this; a way to cheer Diamond Tiara up before it was too late. Things had to go back to the way they were before, and soon. Gathering all of the courage she could muster, Silver Spoon headed over to Diamond Tiara’s house. She was going to speak one on one with her friend - or failing that, her parents. This would normally be a pretty terrifying situation, but at that moment, Silver Spoon was far too concerned about Di to be nervous enough to back out. The filly convinced herself that however bad this plan turned out, things couldn’t possibly get any worse between her and Di than they already were. After all, there’s nothing worse than being ignored …right? Silver Spoon trotted anxiously through the streets, and soon the glistening roof of Diamond Tiara’s manor could be spotted over the horizon. As Silver approached, her heart began to race, her mind was filled simultaneously with both hope and dread, and suddenly a short, pink, curly maned filly came into view. “Di…” Silver wanted to shout her friend’s name, but instead, she just whispered it quietly to herself, suddenly realising that she hadn’t even planned out what she was actually going to say or do. Diamond still looked angry, but she also looked extremely upset. She was kicking at the ground, and muttering something to herself. Silver Spoon hesitated for a moment; was this really such a good idea? What if Di just got angry with her again? What if she ran away? What if things really did get worse? No. She had to try. Things couldn’t carry on like this. Di needed her right now; whether she was aware of it or not. Silver Spoon took a deep breath, puffed out her chest, and charged toward her friend. “Fancy seeing you here.” A familiar voice made Silver Spoon stop dead in her tracks. It was taunting, smug, and very unwelcome right now. “C…Candlelight.” Silver looked up at the unicorn, unsure how to respond. “You rushing home from school? Is it really that bad?” Candlelight teased, Silver tried to catch her breath, “No, it’s fine.” She replied, then continued walking at a slower pace. She didn’t want Candlelight to see how flustered she was, she just wanted her out of the way so she could reach Diamond Tiara. “Fine hey?” The unicorn didn’t seem to take the hint. “I hated school myself, but then again, you do seem like a total nerd.” Silver didn’t really understand why Candlelight was trying to get to her; but right now, she didn’t care. Still, the unicorn wouldn’t lay off. “Bet you don’t have any friends at all.” She continued, “No pony would be friends with a dorky little loser like you.” For whatever reason, these words made Silver Spoon angry, very, very angry. Without thinking, she turned and looked Candlelight dead in the eyes, “What is your problem?” She shouted, stomping her hoof. "What have you even got against me?" Candlelight seemed to find this hilarious, she flicked her dark mane and chuckled. “Aww, did I hit a nerve?” “Why won’t you just leave me alone?” Silver was becoming infuriated. “You mean like everyone else does?” Candlelight wasn’t backing down, “I see you walking home from school all by yourself. You really don’t have any friends, and it’s no wonder….” “I do have friends!” Silver Spoon retaliated, “Then where are they?” Candlelight replied, “They…. urm… she… my best friend… is standing right behind…” “Silver Spoon, will you stop yelling so loudly outside my house?!” A squeaky, younger voice called over. “Di!” Silver Spoon couldn’t believe it – Diamond Tiara had acknowledged her for the first time in a week! And what perfect timing; now Candlelight could plainly see that she did, in fact, have friends. Well, she had one friend; one beautiful, cool, amazing friend. “Who in Equestria is this?” Diamond asked rudely, pointing at Candlelight, “Wait... She’s not your mom is she?” Silver Spoon chuckled – Diamond clearly meant this as an insult. Although Diamond had never actually met her mother, Candlelight wasn’t quite old enough to be her. “Actually Di, she’s….” Silver Spoon paused, as reality suddenly hit - Diamond Tiara couldn’t know who Candlelight was. She didn’t know that Silver Spoon was a waitress, and now was probably not the best time for her to find out. “She’s nobody.” Silver turned her back on the mare, “Di, I need to talk to you.” Of course, Candlelight was having none of that. “Well isn’t this cute. You do have one little friend after all. That’s adorable.” She sniggered, “You two gonna go play dolls and make overs now?” Diamond Tiara was in no mood to be insulted, “Look grandma,” She began, “You’re obviously jealous of my beauty and youth. Who even dyed your mane? It looks like you tried to paint it, those streaks aren’t remotely even, and you’re much too old to pull off a plat.” Candlelight’s face dropped, and Silver Spoon suddenly felt really, really happy. Diamond was back to her usual self – at least, it seemed that way. “Well, haven’t you got guts.” Candlelight raised an eyebrow, “shame the same can’t be said for your nerdy little friend. Don’t stay out for too long Silver Spoon, this weekend’s going to be pretty tough, don’t want you flipping out again now do we?” At those words, Silver Spoon’s stomach churned, she had to get Di out of there, right now. “Look Candlelight we’ve got to go.” She turned, hoping that Diamond Tiara would follow her. Once again, Candlelight kept talking, “Seriously, the restaurant’s going to be rammed - can’t have you screwing up and getting fired, now can we?” That last sentence almost sounded like a threat, but that wasn’t what worried Silver Spoon right now. “Restaurant? What restaurant?” Diamond questioned angrily, Silver Spoon froze helplessly, as a familiar feeling consumed her entire body. She felt her cheeks rapidly glowing red, and a huge lump building in her throat. She wanted to look at Diamond, to see her reaction, but she was just too afraid. “Erm… duh, the restaurant she works at?” Candlelight rolled her eyes, “If you use the term work lightly.” The unicorn didn’t realise that for once, her insults had no effect on Silver. The thought of Di knowing that she was a waitress was already more than the poor filly could bare. She didn't care what else Candlelight said, she was a total state, and her body and her mind were both telling her the same thing; that she just to get out of there. She had to run far away from this whole situation. No. Not this time. Silver decided that she had already let her anxiety get the better of her in front of Candlelight, and Diamond. They both definitely thought she was weak, and proving them right wasn’t going to solve anything. And so, with tears in her eyes, and her four legs trembling, Silver Spoon turned to her Diamond Tiara, and poured her heart out. “I’m so sorry Di, I wanted to tell you, I really did… but I was scared. I was scared you… wouldn’t like me anymore.” “Tell me… what?” Diamond appeared to be getting agitated. Her lack of empathy didn’t help, and Silver Spoon couldn’t bring herself to continue. So Candlelight did it for her, “You’re kidding? Silver Spoon, you didn’t tell your prissy little friend that you’re a waitress? You are joking right, that’s the best!” Candlelight chuckled as Diamond’s mouth fell open, “A….waitress?” She exclaimed, “Silver here works at her daddy’s restaurant; cooking, cleaning, you name it. She used to be pretty into her work, until the other day when she had a mental breakdown, now we have to keep a close eye on her to make sure she stays you know… sane.” Candlelight whispered the word 'sane' into Diamond's ear, as though Silver Spoon wouldn't be able to work out what she was saying. Silver couldn’t defend herself; she couldn’t talk, she couldn’t move, she just stood there listening to the sound of her violently thumping heart. “I see you two have a lot to talk about, so I’ll just leave you to it. Say Hi to your dad for me won’t you Silver?” Candlelight gave a wink and walked away, still sniggering. Silver Spoon had never felt this bad before. She was prone to panic attacks, but this was something else. She closed her eyes and wished with all her heart that this moment could be over. Thoughts of Diamond Tiara and the other ponies mocking her came rushing back, playing through her head all at once, overlapping one another. She saw Diamond teasing her, calling her a loser, tearing up her ticket to Manehatten. She also saw Candlelight, watching and cackling evilly as her life fell apart. She saw herself falling, dropping plates and being buried by them as the restaurant staff watched and laughed. The school ponies were all mocking her, led by Diamond who was repeatedly calling her a ‘pathetic work horse.’ Silver Spoon felt herself sweating and shaking, and for what seemed like an eternity, she was mentally trapped in a state of complete despair. Suddenly, Silver was gently awoken from her nightmare, by a tap on the shoulder by a soft pink hoof. She lifted her head slowly, and looked up fearfully into the eyes of her best, and only real friend, Diamond Tiara. Diamond wasn’t smiling, but she wasn’t frowning or laughing either; her face was blank and emotionless. Silver saw Diamond glance at the ground, as though she was pondering what to say, and then she spoke softly, “Silver.” “Ye…yeah Di.” Silver’s voice was shaking so much, her words were barely recognisable. Diamond then paused again, before adding. “There is no way… that I can… be friends.... with a waitress.” She turned coldly, and trotted into town. ~*~ The sun began to set, and a heartbroken Silver Spoon crouched down a few feet away from the beautiful manor. She sobbed silently; everything was a mess. She had never felt this miserable before, she had certainly never felt this lonely. Other ponies passed by, but of course none of them approached her - why would they, after all? What Candlelight said was now truer than ever; Silver Spoon had no friends, and she certainly didn’t have a best friend. The last words which Diamond had said to her played through Silver’s mind on a loop. She couldn’t imagine how different things were going to be from now on. Would Diamond Tiara turn up to school? Would she make fun of her on a daily basis? Or would she just continue to ignore her? Silver wasn't sure which she preferred, but she desperately wanted to see Diamond Tiara and try again, although she knew in her heart that it was hopeless, her head just wouldn't cooperate. Maybe there still was a way out of this; maybe she could make something up, or she could just quit her job and find something cool to do instead; something that would really impress Diamond Tiara. Silver knew that this idea was both wrong and pathetic, but she couldn’t stand the thought of never getting her friend back. An hour passed by, and the sky grew darker, but there still was no sign of Diamond Tiara. Silver Spoon had calmed down a little, although she now felt more helpless than ever. After staring sadly at the ground for a little while longer, the filly got to her feet. She didn’t want to go home just yet, but her father would be pretty angry if she was late – she was supposed to be preparing the dinner for that evening. The heartbroken young mare tried her best to block out the terrible thoughts spiraling through her head. She set off toward home, taking a last glance at Diamond Tiara’s manor. It was the most beautiful building in all of ponyville. The roof glistened in the last of the suns rays, and the bricks were a delightful shade of salmon pink. Roses decorated the exterior, and light beamed from the large glass windows. Silver Spoon couldn’t help but turn her head, and take a short, sorrowful glance inside. After all, she would probably never enter Diamond Tiara’s home again. Everything inside Diamond’s house was magnificent; from the glass chandelier to the golden framed fire place. It was a place fit for a princess; no wonder Diamond Tiara didn’t want to hang out with a lame waitress. After a deep sigh, Silver Spoon was about to leave, when two ponies trotted into the room. carrying a long delivery box. Silver Spoon recognised them instantly as Diamond's parents. Her father; a brown, serious looking stallion with a gelled mane, steadily placed the box down. Diamond’s mother; a pink, glamorous mare with long hair similar to her daughters, carefully began to open it. Silver gulped at the sight of them; they looked pretty intimidating. She ducked a little, but continued to watch as the two slowly pried the box open. The four sides fell to the ground one by one, and the sight of the object inside made Silver’s face drop. She had to remove her glasses, rub them with her hoof, and then place them back on her face, to make absolute sure that she wasn’t imagining things. Silver Spoon desperately needed a moment to get her head straight. It all made sense now; it all made perfect sense. > Do you like Apples? > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- “How could this happen?” Silver Spoon paced up and down in her room the following morning, “no wonder Di is so miserable lately! I gotta help her, I’m her friend, but…. What can I do?” The filly had been tossing and turning all night, and yet she was still completely restless. Silver lay on her bedroom floor, looking through her beloved velvet diary at the photos of her and Diamond Tiara when they were fillies. “Why didn’t she tell me?” Silver whispered, “I thought we were best friends.” At first she contemplated searching for Diamond Tiara, and telling her about her discovery, spilling her heart and assuring her friend that everything was going to be alright, but… Silver Spoon was afraid of the consequences. Each and every time she had tried to reach out to Di, it had only driven them further apart. “Maybe Miss Cheerilee was right.” Silver Spoon concluded, “Maybe Di will realise that she needs somepony to talk to, some pony to be there for her… eventually.” With all of these conflicting thoughts racing through her mind, Silver Spoon had forgotten that she had a long, busy shift ahead of her. When she suddenly remembered, the filly felt incredibly queasy, and the anxieties of her and Di’s run-in with Candlelight came flooding back. Silver Spoon used to love her job, but not anymore. That mare had ruined everything; not only her career, but also her already damaged social life. Candlelight’s mocking voice echoed through her thoughts. Silver Spoon began to fret; her body and her mind were just not up to this. “I shouldn’t go.” Silver Spoon told herself, “it will only be a complete disaster anyway, I could call in sick…” She looked disappointingly at her own reflection, “or better yet, I could just hide.” “No.” She decided, “the restaurant still needs me; they’re going to be busy today. I’ve never called in sick in my life, and I’m not going to start now.” And so - even though everything in Silver Spoon’s gut was telling her not to go - she still put on her uniform, and set off to work. When the magnificent building came into view, Silver suddenly felt exhausted. It was as though her body was deliberately trying to tell her not to enter the restaurant that day. Regardless, the filly took a deep breath and boldly headed over. She paused once more upon reaching the overwhelmingly large blue doors, with their gigantic golden handles. “You can do this… you can do this….” The filly muttered under her breathe. Then she lifted her hoof, reached out for the handle, and then… Wack. “Ouch.” Silver Spoon rubbed her sore head. The large, heavy door had been opened from the inside, quite recklessly, and struck her pretty hard. It took a moment for the fillies vision and hearing to return to her properly, but when they did, she was surprised to see a young pony no bigger than herself standing over her, freaking out and apologizing over and over. “I’m sorry! I’m so sorry!” The red colt was rapidly looking her over, to see what damage he had caused. “Are you alright?” “Wh… what the…” “I’ll go fetch some pony!” He added, and turned to run back inside. “No!!!” Silver Spoon panicked, grabbing his back hoof. The colt stumbled, and looked back at Silver in confusion. “Don’t… don’t fetch any pony. I’m fine.” Silver said as calmly as possible, and lifted herself back up as if to prove it. “Are ya sure?” He wasn’t convinced, “that door is preetttty heavy.” “Y…yeah.” Silver Spoon assured him, before giving the strange pony a look over. His coat was a deep red, decorated by small patches of mud. His large eyes were a marginally lighter colour than his striking green mane, which was tattered and looked as though it hadn’t seen a brush in days. His tail was short and unevenly cut, and he was a little… podgy. “Who are you?” Silver Spoon wasn’t sure if her hesitation to enter the restaurant was getting to her, or if she was genuinely curious. Either way, this colt didn’t seem like the type of pony who could usually be found anywhere near her father’s fancy restaurant. A large goofy grin appeared across the colt’s face, “I’m Apple Pippin!” He stated his name as though it was some kind of title, “Pip for short! I’ve just moved to Ponyville to live with my relatives. They’re going to teach me to become a real apple farmer! I just got my cutie mark last week, after planting my very first apple tree - I think I’ll do a pretty good job.” Silver Spoon hadn’t noticed the young colt’s cutie mark, as it was partially covered by mud, but she tilted her head and saw that it was three seeds, one of which was shining. “Apple Pippin?” She raised an eyebrow, “you look more like a strawberry to me.” To Silver’s surprise, the colt didn’t seem in the least bit offended by her comment. “I love strawberries!” He hopped up and down energetically, “And I also love Ponyville! I used to live with my brother in the city, but he doesn’t really have time to take care of me anymore, and he’s seeing this girl so… I came here to follow my destiny! What’s your name? Do you like apples?” “Urm…” Silver Spoon didn’t feel like answering. She began to wonder why she had even bothered asking the question in the first place. Of course this guy was just another relative of the apple family in Ponyville. She should have guessed from his tatty appearance and pitiful attitude. Each of the Apple Family had the word “Apple” in their name, and they were all earth ponies with agriculture-related cutie marks. “Oh no!” Apple Pippin suddenly gave a panicked hop, “I forgot my cart again!” He darted back inside, opening the door as carelessly as he had done the first time. Silver Spoon rolled her eyes as she heard the young colt apologizing to some ponies on the other side. “Well that was interesting.” She commented, entering the restaurant herself. ~*~ The staff were all lined up, whilst being given a pep talk by Mrs Sizzle about how the restaurant was becoming increasingly popular, and how this weekend was going to be one of their busiest to date. The other waitresses and kitchen staff smiled at Silver Spoon when she joined them, but continued to pay attention to the head supervisor. “We must ensure that all meals are prepared swiftly and successfully.” Mrs Sizzle spoke in a strict tone. “Many of the customers booked in for tonight are very important, successful ponies, and their custom could influence the entire business.” Some of the others looked nervous, but at first, Silver Spoon actually felt rather motivated. She usually looked forward to busy shifts; working hard to satisfy upper class ponies, earning their admiration and respect, and being tipped generously for her efforts… there was nothing quite like it. Then, she noticed Candlelight. The unicorn approached the group, who were stood in a circle around Mrs Sizzle. She faced Silver Spoon from the opposite side, and glared at the young pony in an intimidating manner. Silver tried her best to ignore Candlelight. She still didn’t really understand why the mare had such a problem with her, after all. Today, she just had to keep her mind on her work, do her best, and hope that trouble didn’t find her. The shift began, and the first customers arrived. It was a large party of about twenty well-dressed mares and stallions. They were greeted by the front of house ponies, and shown to their seats. Shortly after, another group arrived, then another, then another. In less than half an hour the entire restaurant was filled with customers, each arrival more fancy-looking than the last. Together with the other waiting staff, Silver hurried to take the orders and deliver the food, all whilst maintaining a polite and pleasant attitude. Although speed was essential at a time like this, customer satisfaction was still the number one priority. Each guest Silver attended to thanked her kindly for her service, and complimented the wonderfully presented food which she laid out before them. Surprisingly, the shift was going pretty well. After a while, Silver Spoon stopped noticing that Candlelight was still glaring at her each time they crossed paths. The filly felt better; much better. The hectic day came and passed in the blink of an eye. Once the guests had left, the staff cleared the diner and Silver Spoon and a few others helped out the kitchen staff with the washing up. The chef was in high spirits as usual, singing as he worked. Suddenly, in walked Mrs Sizzle, followed by the rest of the ponies – including Candlelight- who had finally finished their cleaning. The chef and his helpers turned around to face her, unsure what to expect. Mrs Sizzle’s was frozen in a serious expression, and she said paused for a minute. Then, she spoke. “I’ve spoken to many of our guests this evening, as they were leaving the restaurant. And I am pleased to inform you all that we have received some very high feedback not only for our food, but for the professional and efficient staff who work here.” The ponies all gasped and looked at one another happily, and the chef patted a few of their heads in an affectionate manner. Then, the supervisor said something which greatly surprised at least two of them. “Silver Spoon, you were referred to by many of our customers as being helpful, polite, and incredibly hard working for your age. Very well done, young mare.” Silver couldn’t help but let her mouth drop open at those words. Her fellow co-workers all started patting her, and congratulating her on a job well done. The chef embraced her in a tight hug. “Your father will be so proud.” He said loudly. “Aww thanks guys, but we’re a team! And tonight, we all did great.” Silver told them modestly. She looked over at her work friends. They were all so pleased to have her back with them. How could she ever have considered leaving this place? The restaurant needed her, and she needed it. Fine dining was her passion, and it was what her cutie mark represented. There was no way any pony could ruin this passion for her, not even… That’s when Silver realised that Candlelight, was gone. After waving goodbye to her colleagues, Silver gave a yawn and left the restaurant. She was still thinking about Di, but in her current content state of mind, the filly had come to accept that perhaps there was no way she could help her friend at the minute. Right now, all Silver needed was a good night sleep. ~*~ The following morning the mare awoke refreshed and restored. She rubbed her eyes and prepared for another productive day. This time around, Silver Spoon wasn’t worried about work at all. She put on her uniform and set out into the daylight. As she headed to work, the birds were singing and the bees were humming; it was evident that summer was getting closer and closer. The beautiful sunshine was enough to make any pony feel relaxed and at ease, even if that pony was about to work a frantic shift at a top-quality restaurant. The shift itself went as well as the previous night, with just as many customers and therefore just as many orders to take out. Silver Spoon didn’t have to stay too late this time around. The restaurant was aware that the young filly had school the following day, and kindly gave her an earlier finishing time on Sundays. Nevertheless, the young pony worked her hooves to the bone alongside Cocoa and the others. Again, the customers were very impressed by her pleasant attitude and excellent waitress skills. Silver noticed Candlelight charming a few of her customers in a similar manner, sometimes even by repeating word-for-word what she had overheard Silver Spoon saying, to her own customers. This was a little annoying, but Silver held her head high, realising that Candlelight was probably a little envious of the praise and tips she had received. As another successful shift came to an end, Silver Spoon said goodbye to the others and left the building. The sun was beginning to set, but the air was still warm, and she could hear crickets chirping in the long grass which surrounded the restaurant. Then, Silver Spoon heard another noise. It was squeaky and strange, and getting closer and closer. “Good evening!” Apple Pippin beamed as he trotted over and stood in her path. The scruffy colt was pulling a small wooden cart, filled with red and green apples. It was rickety and looked as though it could fall apart at any given second. “Oh… hi.” Silver gave a quick glance, contemplating which the best way to walk around him was. “So do you like apples?” He was pretty persistent, “I never got your answer last time.” “Not really.” Silver Spoon replied coldly, deciding to pass on his right. She didn’t want to associate with a relative of that blank flank. Once again, Pip wasn’t fazed by her response. “I deliver these apples around Ponyville.” He announced proudly, “but the very best ones go to this restaurant. They pay a high price, I bet their apple pies must be delicious!” The young colt licked his lips. “Do you work here?” Silver sighed, “You aren’t going to ask me to sneak you an apple pie are you?” She asked sarcastically. Pip’s eyes grew wide, “You can do that?” “No.” Silver rolled her eyes, “And I have to go home.” She galloped a little ahead of Apple Pippin, before muttering “weirdo…” under her breathe. “Okidoke. Have a good evening.” The colt replied. Silver Spoon turned and began to walk away. She heard the door to the restaurant opening, and assumed it was Apple Pippin delivering his apples to the Chef. Then, another voice called after her. “Hey Squirt, what do you think you’re doing?” It was Candlelight. Silver Spoon didn’t want to turn around; she knew that it would cause nothing but trouble if she acknowledged the mare again. So she continued walking, “You think that it’s okay for you to show me up like that? You think you’re better than us?” Candlelight sounded angry, “I told you to stay out of my way!” Silver Spoon still didn’t turn, she tried to hurry along and ignore Candlelight altogether, but the mare followed her. “You think you did so well today don’t you? Well let me tell you something, those ponies are all just being nice to you because you’re young; the staff, the customers, they all just think “Aww look at that little filly playing waitress!” And you actually believe you did a good job? Ha, all you are is a kid.” Although a part of her knew that Candlelight was just trying to get under her skin, those cruel words were enough to ruin Silver Spoons content mood, as well as her sense of accomplishment. She’d had enough of that mare’s attitude, and had a good mind to make the point that a grown mare trying to run-down a ‘kid’ was downright pathetic… or something along those lines, Silver never was much good when it came to confrontation, at least, not without Di. Never the less, Silver Spoon stopped in her tracks, and turned to face Candlelight. She was about to say something, but a squeaky voice beat her to the mark. “Hey! I know you!” Both mares turned, to notice that Apple Pippin was still standing there with his cart, watching them. “Y…you what?” Candlelight gave him the same patronizing look that she frequently gave Silver Spoon, but it had no effect on the naïve colt. “You’re that mare who got fired from the café.” He stated. “Fired?” Silver Spoon asked, confused. “Yeah.” Pippin turned to Silver, and continued talking as though Candlelight wasn’t even there. “My cousin, Apple Dumpling has worked there for years. She was promoted to Assistant Manager and given a pay rise for her incredible dedication and great customer service skills, but urm… Candlelight is it?... got jealous. One day she had some kind of weird rage fit because she wasn’t promoted, took it out on a customer, and Apple Dumpling had to fire her.” “T… that’s not…” For the first time ever, Candlelight seemed actively defensive. “Candlelight angrily told Apple Dumpling that she would get even somehow. So Dumpling was afraid that she might take it out on the Apple Farm.” Pip continued as though he was telling a story, “so she warned Applejack to look out for her, and Applejack told me all about it.” “That… that was a long time ago!” Candlelight’s face was burning up, “and I deserved that promotion anyway! Apple Dumpling was a loser, she couldn’t bake to save her life.” “That’s a lie!” Suddenly, Apple Pippin’s carefree, dazed expression turn to one of pure fury, “Apple Dumpling is a fantastic baker! That’s why she got promoted and you didn’t!” Those words hit a nerve, “Now look here you little runt…” Candlelight squared up to Apple Pippin, but she was interrupted. “Candlelight, your break is over, we need you back on duty.” Mrs Sizzle called from the diner, “Y..yes, of course, I’m coming!” the mare called back, before scowling at the two young ponies who now stood before her, together. “This isn’t over.” She snapped, then trotted into the restaurant slamming the door behind her. “Wow” Apple Pippin turned to Silver Spoon, “she’s just as jealous of you as she was of Apple Dumpling.” “I can’t believe she was fired.” Silver replied, “I’ll bet daddy didn’t know that when he hired her.” “Hired her?” Pip looked confused, “Wait. Does your dad own this huggggeee restaurant?” “Y…yeah, he does.” Silver replied. “That is SO cool!” Pip bounced up and down to emphasise his amazement. “Yeah, it is pretty cool.” Silver Spoon couldn’t help but smile, “well, I gotta get home anyway, school tomorrow. Good luck delivering your apples or… whatever.” “School?” Apple Pippin certainly wasn’t easy to end a conversation with. “You mean, in Ponyville? I start there tomorrow!” “You… what?” Silver Spoon gulped, “Yeah! I’m joining my awesome cousin Apple Bloom at the Ponyville School house. Wow, I can’t believe I’ve already met one of my classmates, we could be friends!” Silver froze at the thought of having another member of the apple family in her class, as if one wasn’t enough. She hated Apple Bloom; that little goody-two-shoes know it all who was the ringleader of the cutie mark crusaders. She was always getting gold stars, and top marks, and she was super popular in class. Silver Spoon gritted her teeth, then turned back to Apple Pippin and replied. “Friends? No, I don’t think so.” ~*~ When the school bell rang the following day, Silver Spoon and the other ponies entered the classroom and took their seats. Of course Diamond Tiara didn’t turn up to class, and of course Silver Spoon felt concerned by that matter, but Diamond had told her quite clearly that the two of them could no longer hang out. Silver hoped with all her heart that Diamond was speaking out of misery, but now that she knew what the problem was, she wasn’t quite sure if things would ever get better. For once in her life, Silver Spoon realised that worrying wasn’t going to solve anything. There was nothing she could do right now, she had to just focus on the lesson, and try to drown out the annoying giggles of the three cutie mark crusaders behind her. That’s when Silver Spoon realised that Apple Pippin wasn’t sitting with his cousin Apple Bloom, or with Scootaloo, or Sweetie Belle. However, there was an empty desk directly in front of them, and Silver Spoon started to wonder if he was late; that wouldn’t have surprised her one bit, judging by his goofy attitude. Miss Cheerilee soon entered the classroom, and put her mind to rest. “Good morning class! I have some exciting news for you all today! We have a new student, who is a relative of Apple Bloom!” A few heads turned to look at the country filly, who was grinning excitedly along with her two best friends. “I’m happy to introduce you all to Apple Pippin!” On that note, the young farm colt entered the room. He looked a little less dirty than he did when he was on apple delivery duty, but he was still pretty scruffy. Never the less, the class all started asking questions to both himself and Apple Bloom. “Where are ya from?” Twist waved her hoof in the air, “Do you live with Apple Bloom?” Featherweight asked a little sheepishly, “Do you like video games?” Button mash called over. “Now, now.” Cheerilee calmed the class down, “I’m sure there will be plenty of time at recess for Apple Pippin to answer all of your questions, but for now, let’s start the lesson shall we?” Pip smiled at Silver Spoon as he passed by her desk. Silver obviously ignored the colt, but for some strange reason, she actually felt a little bad for doing so. It didn’t seem to bother Pip one bit though, he sat at his desk waving and shaking hooves with the students surrounding him. When the lesson began, Silver turned around and saw Pip writing notes vigorously, completely engaged in it. Silver Spoon hated recess. She dreaded that bell going off and reminding her that she was all alone at school. She and Diamond Tiara used to take this opportunity to remind the other students that they were above them in every possible way. It always made Silver Spoon happy that Di wouldn’t hang out with any pony apart from her, that she was the only one good enough to be Diamond Tiara’s friend, and that no pony else even came close to it. Nervously, Silver let all the other students leave the classroom first, and then set out to follow, when she noticed Cheerilee beckoning her silently. Silver walked over, and looked up at her teacher. "Yes Miss Cheerilee?" She spoke slowly, hoping to kill some time. “Silver Spoon, are you alright?” The teacher asked kindly, Silver gave a nod, but it wasn’t very convincing. “You seemed to enjoy my lecture today.” Cheerilee continued, “I think you’re a very smart pony Silver Spoon. You have a lot of potential.” “It was a great lecture Miss Cheerilee.” Agreed Silver Spoon. “And yet, I can't help but notice you seem a little lonely without Diamond Tiara?" Cheerilee had a good idea of what was wrong, but she wanted to hear it from Silver's point of view. “Y...eah.” The young filly said meekly. "Do you know about..." "Yes." The teacher nodded, "I've spoken to Diamond Tiara's parents. I don't think she will be joining us for class any time soon." Silver Spoon gazed sadly at the ground, feeling completely helpless, and alone. Cheerilee hesitated for a moment, then added, “I know it's tough Silver Spoon, but you are a very smart, and very strong little filly. .Do you think maybe it’s time you tried to make some new friends?” She suggested. Silver looked at back at the mare as though she was crazy. “I can't do that.” She argued, "No pony here likes me, and... I don't even know how!" Cheerilee gently lifted the young fillies head from the ground with her hoof, and spoke in a kind, gentle manner. “Maybe you could just try being yourself, and see what happens.” She smiled supportively, but Silver Spoon wasn't convinced. She forced a smile, and turned, just in time to see a pink ribbon quickly disappear from the window - it was clearly a part of Apple Bloom's bow. This made Silver feel worse; those stupid blank flanks were spying on her! They had probably heard the whole thing, and had a right giggle about it. Well, at least now she had nothing left to hide. Silver sighed and reluctantly left the classroom. It was going to be the longest twenty minutes of her life. It felt like the first day of Kindergarten all over again. There she was; alone and nervous, without a friend in the world, walking sadly into an area full of happy ponies playing together. But there were no bookshelves in the small playground, there were no hiding places, and there was no Diamond Tiara. Silver walked to the edge of the playground, as far away as she could get from the other students. She was just going to sit and watch the birds, and try to ignore any strange looks she got for being alone at recess. No other pony was alone; this was the first time Silver had realised it, the other classmates all got along so well with one another. It started to get to her, and so Silver looked away, and and noticed a little caterpillar on a leaf. Diamond hated bugs, but Silver actually rather liked nature. As she watched the tiny creature wiggle to the edge of the leaf and start munching away, she heard a sudden 'thud.' Silver looked around to see a familiar purple ball had landed on the grass beside her, and then she heard an all-too-familiar cheerful voice. “Hey Silver Spoon! Come play with us!” Apple Pippin waved over at her from a distance. Silver tilted her head, what on earth was that colt doing? Did he not understand anything? Soon, the Cutie Mark Crusaders turned up as well, wondering why Pip was taking so long to retrieve the ball. “What?” Silver snapped, in an unfriendly manner. “He said come play with us.” A high pitched squeaky voice called over. It was Sweetie Belle. Silver paused for a moment, then scoffed. Just who did these little dimwits think they were? Did they feel sorry for her? We’re they trying to trick her? Either way, there was absolutely no way she was going to play with them. Not with any of them. She hated them. she really hated them all. “No way.” She scowled defensively, “Aw what’s the matter?” Apple Bloom said in a playful tone, “Afraid you’ll lose to a bunch of blank flanks?” Silver was insulted at the thought; of course she wouldn’t lose to them! They were dopey little brats, they had no talents. That was it, she didn’t really have much of a choice now – Silver had to play, to prove that she wasn't afraid, to prove that she was better than them! “Alright farm horse, you’re on!” She scowled. The young ponies trotted over to the grass, “Okay” Apple Bloom called out, “It’s Silver Spoon and Apple Pippin against me and Scootaloo! Anddd Sweetie Belle is referee.” Sweetie Belle blew her whistle loudly, then bellowed. “Right, every pony ready? We sure have a nice day for this… urm... okay, go!” She blew the whistle again, and the ponies ran to the ball. Scootaloo reached it first, she started dribbling across the grass, in the direction of two stumps which signified the goal for their team. Apple Pippin was swift; he darted alongside her and stole the ball, then kicked it to Silver Spoon. Silver panicked a little when she saw Apple Bloom and Scootaloo charging towards her, but she straightened her glasses then dribbled the ball toward the other goal. The fillies came either side of her, and she was getting tired, when suddenly she head Apple Pippin’s voice. “Silver, over here!” He called, and Silver Spoon kicked the ball as hard as she could toward the young colt. Pip took over, he ran far ahead of the other team, and then fiercely shot the ball right into the goal! “Yeah!!!” He cheered and hopped around excitedly. “Awesome job Pip!” Silver called to her team-mate. Then froze again when she realised what she had just done. Silver Spoon watched Apple Pippin prancing around, celebrating their first goal, and she just couldn’t help but smile. Sweetie Belle blew the whistle, “That’s one point to Apple Pippin and Silver Spoon! Alright ponies, back to your starting positions!” The ponies returned to the centre of the field, looking more determined than ever. Silver smiled at Apple Pippin and he winked back. After one more blow of the whistle, and the game resumed. Meanwhile, from inside the classroom, Cheerilee looked out the window and saw the group having fun together. She smiled, and then continued preparing the chalk board for her next lecture. “That was an awesome match!” Scootaloo flapped her orange wings excitedly. “Woohoo we won!!” Apple Pippin was still prancing about. “Yeah yeah, by one point!” Apple Bloom smiled confidently, “Besides, we just went easy on you cos it was your first day! Tomorrow, you’ll see what we’re really made of!" Pip wasn’t fazed; he continued to chuckle. “Haha, that’s right, you just keep telling yourself that Cuz! Me and Silver can beat you guys any day! Isn’t that right Silver Spoon?” Silver said nothing; she didn’t know what to say. She looked over at the four young ponies laughing and joking about in a playful, friendly manner, and she just didn't understand. Her and Diamond never played ball games; Diamond always said they were for babies. They used to play other games though, like Chess and Ponyopoly, but Diamond always either cheated, or got angry when she was losing and ended the game early. Diamond was a very sore loser, and a very boastful winner, playing games with her never was much fun. Silver had fun today though, and this confused her. Pip didn’t seem offended by her silence. Instead, he put a hoof around her shoulder. “Say, what are you doing after school Silver Spoon? Do you want to come to Sugar Cube Corner with us?” “What?” Silver Spoon jumped a little, then looked up at the energetic young stallion. He had a huge grin on his face, and seemed to be having trouble keeping still. Silver slowly turned to the Cutie Mark Crusaders, expecting to see three awkward faces glaring back at her, disgusted at the idea of her being invited. But to her surprise, they were smiling too; not to the extent of Apple Pippin, but they certainly didn’t look disgusted. Nevertheless, Silver stepped to the side, letting Pip’s hoof fall. “No, no, thank you.” She said sternly. “Are you sure?” Apple Bloom tilted her head. “Yeah.” Silver didn’t know how to talk to Apple Bloom - she didn’t know how to talk to any of them. Pip actually seemed hurt. His smile faded and he stopped bouncing up and down; he just didn’t understand why Silver Spoon didn’t want to go with them. One look at the sheer disappointment upon his face made Silver feel a little guilty. She sighed, then forced a tiny smile. “Okay… maybe just one milkshake.” The young colt’s face instantly lit up. “Woohooo!” He cheered, and hugged Silver Spoon. Silver was caught by surprise, and couldn’t help blushing. The cutie mark crusaders smiled, first at Pip and Silver, then at each other. Silver still had her doubts about them, but she was starting to believe that Apple Pippin really did want to hang out with her. And so, that afternoon, the five young ponies headed off to Sugar Cube Corner. Silver was a little nervous. In the past, she always let Diamond Tiara order for her, so she never really had to speak or order anything. The filly began to panic as the group approached the counter, but relaxed when Apple Pippin said exactly what was on her mind. “Wow! There’s so much to choose from, it all looks delicious! I just don’t know what to have!” “Why don’t you guys go get a table?” Apple Bloom turned to the others, “Today is my treat. It’s a special occasion.” ‘Special occasion’? Silver didn’t understand, but she followed Sweetie Belle, Scootaloo, and Pip over to a nice little oak table by the window. She wasn’t sure how to speak to them, so she took a seat next to Pip and listened nervously. To her delight, Pip didn’t stop talking once, so Silver and the others couldn’t really get a word in anyway. Soon Apple Bloom joined them, she was carrying a paper box, which she lifted gently onto the table. The ponies gazed as she opened it to reveal the most beautiful sponge cake they had ever seen. It had words written on it in swirly icing, and underneath was a picture of three apple seeds, also drawn in icing. The words read, “Welcome to Ponyville Pip x” “I had it made special.” Apple Bloom smiled and took a seat, “As ya’ll know, my cousin Apple Pippin has just moved to Ponyville, to help out on the Applefarm. He did an amazing job this weekend, and he’s already getting along great with my friends. So this is a little thank you, and I think I speak for everyone here when I say: it’s great to have you in Ponyville Pip!” It was the first time Apple Pippin had stopped talking since they entered the store. Silver even spotted a single tear appear in his eye, “Aw shucks Apple Bloom, you didn’t have to do that.” Pip hugged his cousin - it was a truly touching moment. Mrs Cake came over to cut the treat, and every pony got an equal slice. It was delicious; the butter cream icing was the sweetest thing Silver Spoon had ever tasted. The jam in the middle was made from fresh strawberries, and the sponge was light and had vanilla flavouring. The group then ordered some milkshakes, and Silver started to feel more comfortable. Apple Pippin seemed to get even more hyper off the sugar; he talked about apples, about his home town, and fun times he had with his older brother. The young ponies laughed at Pip’s stories, and joined in with their own, and not once did they say a bad word about any pony. It was very different to hanging out with Diamond Tiara. Silver found it difficult to join in their conversations, but they didn’t seem to mind. Apple Pippin kept smiling at her, as though her just being there was enough. It was a great afternoon, and the group completely lost track of time. Mrs Cake had to walk over to tell them that the store was closing. They thanked her and made their way out. “Well guys, we best be heading back to the Apple Farm. See ya’ll tomorrow.” Apple Bloom first smiled at Scootaloo and Sweetie Belle, and then at Silver Spoon. “Yeah tomorrow, best up your game Scootaloo!” Pip smiled and raised his hoof. “Oh it’s on!” Scootaloo gave Pip a hoof bump. Sweetie Belle giggled, “Bye guys!” “B…bye.” Silver added. As the young fillies went their separate ways, Silver felt unusual. She couldn’t believe how much fun she had with those blank flanks - what in Equestria would Diamond say if she found out? For years, Silver and Di had always hated the Cutie Mark Crusaders. The way they naively spent their days playing and having fun, how friendly and compassionate they were to one another, how every pony liked them and they liked every pony. It made her so angry. But today, Silver had become a part of it. It was as though the crusaders had completely blanked out everything that had happened in the past and just forgotten all the times her and Di had been mean to them. Silver Spoon contemplated the strange events of that day, playing them over and over again in her mind. Then suddenly, she caught sight of a bright blue star soaring gently through the night sky. She watched it with wide eyes, until it started getting smaller and smaller. For some reason, Silver Spoon followed the light as it faded into the distance, and then, she saw Diamond Tiara. The pink filly was just standing there in the darkness, but Silver Spoon could still make out her flushed cheeks and heavy scowl. “Di, what are you doing out here?” She asked, as calmly as possible. “What do you want… waitress?!” Diamond snapped bitterly through her tears. “Di, come on. Don’t do that.” Silver Spoon could hardly believe she had just spoken like that, and to Diamond Tiara no less. She decided to try and remedy the situation. “Do you want to come and stay at my house?” She asked kindly. Diamond Tiara looked at her in disbelief, and for a moment she actually seemed to consider taking up the offer. Then, she gave a violent stamp at the ground. “No!” She shouted, “I don’t need your help! How dare you look down on me like that! I can’t believe I was friends with you, why… you’re practically a servant!” Usually, that kind of comment would have really gotten to Silver Spoon, but Diamond Tiara was clearly on the verge of some mental break down, and so Silver Spoon decided to put all of her cards on the table. “Di.” She spoke softly, “I know about the baby.”
