> A Nightmares Love > by Pvt Caboose > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- > Chapter 1 > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Nightmare Moon stood as still as a statue, clenching her teeth as to not let a slew of profanity and insults escape her. Her eyelids felt heavy as she slowly zoned in and out, only to be interrupted by the cacophony of ponies that were scattered around her. Tired eyes met harsh sunlight when she peered out from her mental sanctuary. Lines formed under her large, serpent-like eyes as she cautiously glanced around at the room's inhabitants. A mix of a sneer and frown graced her lips, while with every deep controlled breath her nostrils flared. It was safe to say she was not enjoying herself. All around her were things she despised. Daylight, noise, bright colors, ponies. The happy chatter of her fellow castle-mates and guests swirled around her and broke any possible concentration. Carefully she counted to herself as to not entirely go off the deep end, but slowly began to lose strength. Their light-hearted chatter and giggles pierced her thoughts, and wormed its way into the deepest recesses of her mind. She was slowly going insane from being around everything she hated. A deep need for silence began to manifest itself and weighed heavily in her chest. In her mind, she imagined herself getting sent back to the moon or banished to the wastelands, which would’ve been better than her current punishment. An impatient and pent-up sigh left her lips, as her eyes reopened to show a harsh glare that settled on the large doors at the end of the throne room. She, along with everyone else, awaited the arrival of their newest castle guest. Though standing in a room full of everything she hates was torture, she’d rather do it a hundred times over than deal with the new comer. Her glare lessened as another sigh escaped her. Standing in the throne room seemed like one of the longest times of her life. Slowly she glanced to her left, looking at one of the many castle-mates that stood nearby. Standing tall and proud, was Prince Shining Armor. Since he married into royalty, much to Nightmare Moon’s dismay, he now resided in the castle with his wife. His royal red coat covered his abdomen, displaying many medals and awards and ribbons that made the Queen of the Night sneer. He'd never seen a battle in his measly life. His eyes glanced around the room at his guards, with a scrutinizing gaze as he kept his chin held high.   Nightmare Moon grumbled and rolled her eyes before looking farther down, and nearly snapped. Beside Prince Meathead, stood the wretched Prince Blueblood. The name alone was enough to make her shudder in disgust. His mere presence was enough to make Nightmare’s blood start to boil under her skin. Ever since her return, she’d been trying to figure out how it was possible for a goat such as him to be related to anyone with a social status in the castle. His chin remained high, as a prissy pout settled on his face. Nightmare Moon sneered, giving a glimpse of her razor sharp teeth. Briefly her brows furrowed in question as she glanced around, looking for Discord. Her thoughts were answered with a bright flash, as his serpent like body came wiggling into existance. He came to rest next to the other two Princes, and began wreaking havoc. The annoyance he became gave her mild joy as she watched the two ponies suffer.   A glance to her right, showed the Princesses of Equestria, standing in all of their glory. Not as great as I. The farthest away stood Celestia, who shared light-hearted words and smiles with the others. The light that was reflected off her coat was enough to nearly blind the Queen of the Night, whose frown deepened. While the mental scars of her banishment and the many fights that were had were still present in her mind, Nightmare Moon didn’t hate her that much. Until she quickly reminded herself that it was Celestia’s idea to reform her. And that it was also her idea to invite another being to live in the castle with her.   Next to the Solar Princess, stood Nightmare Moon’s dearest Luna. Her frown slowly morphed into a small smile, as she watched the smaller and normally timid mare speak exuberantly to the others. Upon her return, Nightmare Moon had become a protector of sorts to her smaller self. Since they were mostly one in the same pony, Luna had become a younger sibling of sorts to the Mistress of the Night.   Beside Luna, stood the newest inaugurated Princess, Twilight Sparkle. While the mental wound of being defeated by purple smart was still fresh in her mind, she didn’t have much against her. Except for the fact that she was courting the smaller Lunar Princess. Which drew Nightmare Moon's scrutinizing glare whenever she caught the two together. Lastly, stood Princess ‘Caddy’. Nightmare Moon nearly gagged as the name crossed her mind. The second newest Princess to be introduced to Nightmare moon. While she didn’t do much to anger The Queen of The Night, besides giggling and smiling, she did marry Shining Armor. Why on Equis she’d marry a meathead such as him was beyond Nightmare Moon. Which would also bring about thoughts of how he came about, from such an educated and noble family. Nightmare also didn’t like the fact that she was pink, and cute, and that she reminded her of the other pink menace. Thankfully the other Elements of Harmony weren’t there. Knowing she’d been beat by a sissy seamstress, a pink spaz, and a dainty butterfly and two dykes was embarrassing enough, but having to deal with them all was another can of worms. Nightmare Moon sighed, calming her thoughts as she continued to wait. Like a miracle, the doors to the throne room opened, sparing her the eternity of waiting. Her mood was immediately soured upon the sight of the strange human. Nightmare Moon had only seen him a few times, and never bothered to delve into what he was. Everypony else in the room had been constantly fawning over him, and she felt no reason to do so. He wasn’t even that interesting, just funny looking. Immediately everypony in the room began swarming him and greeting him, while Nightmare Moon remained stationary. While they were turned away, she stuck her tongue out and tilted her head from side to side, imitating their near cooes of affection as they all greeted him. A brief glance to her left showed Blueblood remained where he originally was. A sneer crossed her face as she returned her gaze forward, to find everyone moving towards her. While the human knew most of the ponies around him, the greetings were fast before they approached the two still royals. The strange biped approached Blueblood, and out of the corner of her eye she could see the unamusement on both of their faces. Like the prissy snob Blueblood was, he made a big deal over the greeting. Prick Eventually, the biped stood before Nightmare Moon. Her eyes almost widened in awe at the fact that the hairless ape had the audacity to address her. “I don’t believe we’ve formally met,” The human started carefully, “My name’s Jo-” Nightmare Moon scoffed as a small smile of realization crossed her lips at her mental epiphany. As if the meaning for life was suddenly explained to her, she simply turned from him and walked away. She didn't have to be here, and the new, sudden thought brought a small smile to her face as she almost happily trotted away. Behind her, the biped stood frozen, watching as the black alicorn disappeared. “Was it something I said?” The human asked rhetorically after a few moments, slightly downtrodden from his failed greeting. “Do not fear, she’s just afraid of meeting new ponies.” Celestia answered with a smile, causing everyone to share a giggle at Nightmare Moon's expense. Just down the hall, Nightmare Moon growled at the joyous sound of their laughter.                                                  * * *     > Chapter 2 > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- “Joseph, are you even listening?” There was a pause before he responded, “Hm? Uh-yeah…” his gaze meeting the amused look of the solar monarch. The monarch in question silently watched on as her human friend slowly returned to his own devices. Her eyes carefully watched his facial features, inconspicuously studying his strange behavior. “Is everything alright?” Celestia asked, her amusement fading away as concern crossed her face. “Hm-no, it’s just...uh-nothing.” Joseph answered, carefully compiling his words and thoughts. Celestia’s gaze returned forward, but she wasn’t convined. Her own thoughts distracted her as she watched him out of the corner of her eye. The two both equally alien beings had been casually strolling around the castle for the past few hours. After what felt like hours they found themselves in one of the thousands of expansive corridors hidden inside the confines of the castle. Celestia paused in a moment of slight awe, “You’re thinking about Nightmare Moon, aren’t you?” as a small smile of victory crossed her lips. “I-What?” Joseph sputtered, turning towards the smug princess. Celestia’s smile never left her face, “You do remember what I said, right?” “That’s she’s reformed and that she’s always rude, so don’t feel special.” Joseph replied in a wry tone. Celestia’s giggles echoed throughout the corridor, “Then why are you acting like a schoolyard filly with a crush.” Immediately Joseph’s cheeks flushed red as his dagger shooting eyes locked onto Celestia. Meanwhile she giggled in a very unprincess-like fashion. It took a few moments for Celestia to catch her breath before she rolled her eyes, “Oh lighten up, I was only joking.” she said, like she was talking to a little colt. The pouting human only grunted in response. “You’re insufferable, you know that?” Celestia asked, still addressing him like a child. Joseph stuck his tounge out in response. “My point exactly.” Celestia said with a sigh. “Take it back.” Joseph mumbled. “The sad part is you’re serious.” Celestia deadpanned, almost saying it to reassure herself. The childish human only looked at her through squinted eyes as he pouted. Celestia sighed, “I’m sorry for saying you had a crush on Nightmare Moon. Can we be friends again?” “Of course we can!” Joseph said laughing, wrapping an arm around Celestia. Celestia shrugged him off, “Don’t touch me.” One of the duo was left smiling as they continued on their walk. “Now will you tell me?” Celestia asked after a long moment of silence, letting the amused human calm down. Joseph sighed, “I guess I was kind of excited to meet her. Like, when I met you, and Luna, and all the other higher ups. It’s not everyday you meet a new princess, or in this case, a super villain.” Celestia tried to hide her smile as Joseph paused for a moment to think. “And I also made an effort into being nice. Usually I don’t try at a lot of things, but I got all of your letters and read them carefully, and even planned what I was going to say.” Joseph continued, throwing his hands around for emphasis. “Aww~” Celestia cooed with a wide smile. “Screw. You.” Joseph fumed.   Once again, Joseph went back to pouting as Celestia lost herself in laughter. After a few moments, Celestia tried to reason with him, “Remember, she only knows a time frame of barely two decades, from over a thousand years ago. Being here now, is a bit of a shock to her.” “Especially when a completely alien being walks up and tries talking to her for the first time.” She added with a smirk, bumping him for emphasis.   “Yeah, I guess. I just-don’t know how to feel about it?” Joseph said, tilting his head as he tried to figure out his thoughts.   Celestia looked at him with a raised eyebrow. He only shrugged in response as they fell into silence once again. “Hey, Celestia?” Joseph started, the white alicorn humming in acknowledgement, “Do you mind if I ask, like-why you brought Nightmare Moon back?” Celestia fell silent in thought, “You know you’re probably the only one to genuinely care about the reasoning behind bringing her back.” “Cool?” He replied cautiously, not exactly sure how to respond. Celestia merely rolled her eyes before continuing on, “So how much do you know about Nightmare Moon and her related conflicts?” “Well, I know there was this pony, named Nightmare Moon, and she didn’t like some things.” He answered with a smile. “Alright, smart-flank, would you like an answer to your question?” Celestia’s asked in a mock-stern tone. “Simmer down,” Joseph said with a cheeky smile, “So it was like, a year or two after Luna’s return right?” “Correct.” “And it was on or near Nightmare Night, when Nightmare Moon returned to exact her revenge.” He continued. “Mhm.” “And the elements were once again used on her, and somehow in the end you got two ponies out of the whole ordeal.” Joseph concluded. “The minor details are irrelevant. To keep it simple, Nightmare Moon is a copy of Luna. Their memories, emotions, and feelings are mostly one in the same. The body of Nightmare Moon is merely a manifestation of alicorn magic, based off of what Luna envisioned herself as.” “The very first time I used the elements, it essentially rendered Luna dormant as she spent her time on the moon.” Celestia said in a quiet voice, “But something happen. During her time on the moon, Nightmare Moon transformed from Luna’s alter ego. She became a pony that resided inside Luna, feeding off of her via emotions and magic, and when powerful enough, could make herself physical while using Luna.” “After she returned again, we thought Nightmare Moon was gone for good. But somewhere deep inside, she waited. Disguised as Luna’s subconscious, she grew and became more powerful than ever. Eventually it reached a critical point, which is when she took over for the third time.” Celestia sighed, before continuing, “Because of the amount of energy and magic she had stored was so pure and powerful, that when it met the immense power of the elements, it separated them.” “So basically the separation of Luna and Nightmare Moon was an unforeseen consequence of using the elements, because of the magic stored in Luna.” Joseph summarized.   “In a very simplified version of layman's terms, yes.” Celestia said. “So, like, why didn’t you just kill her, or something? Or just send her to the moon again?” Joseph asked. Celestia was taken back by the human’s question, “What?” “Yeah, I mean, that’s what we always did.” He answered, “If they’re bad you just kill them, or make them go away for a long time.” She looked at him with an unamused glare. “What? Isn’t that what happened to Sombra?” Joseph added innocently. Celestia’s eyes closed as she tried to keep herself composed, “That’s a story for another day. But just know this, Sombra was never a good pony.” Joseph was silent for a moment, “So, why did you reform her?” “Because as soon as Luna was recovered enough to speak, she pleaded for me to not harm Nightmare Moon.” Celestia replied, instantly leaving Joseph in awe. “And that’s how we got here.” He confirmed. Celestia smiled, “Something like that.” “So is she always going to be mean to people, or?” Joseph asked after a few moments. Celestia looked over to him and chuckled, “It’s a difficult process to reform somepony that wanted to end life as we know it.” “Yeah-Well…” “And you can’t begin to help somepony if they don’t ask for it.” Celestia added, silencing Joseph for good. He returned to his thoughts, replaying her words in his head. Joseph knew everything was a complicated process, especially when it comes to reforming someone, so he didn’t press any further. He felt that he used up his twenty questions and all story time for the day. They continued on their walk, enjoying the silence as both of them were lost in thought. --- “I’ll send for you when dinner has been prepared.” “Alright, see ya later, Celestia.” Joseph said. The sound of Celestia’s metal shoes against the marble floor echoed down the hallway as Joseph slowly closed the door. His legs ached from their long trip around the castle, but he felt happy none the less as he looked in on his dimly lit chambers. Most of his belongings were being held for research, so there wasn’t all that much to do. His eyes scanned around the room before landing on the large study that was kept in the corner of the room. The massive bookshelves loomed over him as his eyes roamed to and fro before landing on an older history book. After his conversations with Celestia, he realized he wasn’t as learned as he thought he was about Equestrian history. Quickly he settled into a recliner, before flipping open the cover on the large tome. --- The quiet sounds of someone knocking at the chamber doors brought Joseph back from his thoughts. A muffled female voice passed through the door as he remained motionless. “Come in.” Joseph called out. The door gently opened, followed by gentle hoofsteps, “Our majesty has requested you come to the dining hall for dinner.” The little mare in a maid’s outfit fell silent as her gaze landed on the lone human. He laid prone on an area rug by the study, books piled up around him. Some opened, others stacked taller than she was. On his head forehead rested a book, that he carefully balanced. “Uhm…?” “I’m hoping to get the information the book holds through osmosis.” Joseph calmly answered, still looking up at the book on his head. “Oh…” “Please tell Celestia that I’ll be there eventually.” He added, finally trailing his eyes over to the small mare. She bowed slightly, “As you wish.” “Thank you.” He called out as she exited his room. A sigh left him, as the book slumped off his head. He sat up, looking around the noticeably darker room, trying to figure out how long he’d spent reading. Gingerly he rose, stretching and popping joints as he rubbed his eyes. The sun was noticeably lower in the sky then he remembered, but shrugged, and dragged himself over to the balcony doors. The air was warm as he stood in the golden light of the sun. He took in the view that his new residence gave him. For as far as he could see, Equestria was before him, the beauty rendering him speechless. As he traced mountain peaks with his eyes, he noticed a large garden located a few hundred feet before him. Joseph ran through his thoughts, trying to remember if Celestia had ever told him about it. Concluding that she probably did and that he wasn’t listening at the time, he made his way back inside as he prepared to embark on a journey to the new garden. --- His journey was event-less as he scaled the hundreds of stairs that led him to the ground floor of the castle. Without any real direction, he set out in search of the garden. After a few minutes of getting completely lost within the identical corridors of the castle, Joseph had managed to find a large set of doors that led out. The beauty of the garden was breathtaking, as he tentatively began exploring it. Even if Celestia didn’t tell him about it, he could understand why she didn’t reveal this treasure that resided in the castle. Minutes felt like hours as he calmly waded through flowers. That was until he spotted Nightmare Moon. His breathing hitched, as he quickly hid behind a hedgerow. Peaking around the corner, he watched the black alicorn mosey from one patch of flowers to another. She seemed unburdened, relaxed, even happy. A thought that brought a smile to his face. The villain of the night, stopped to smell the flowers… His thoughts distracted him as she neared. Only to realize this as their eyes locked. Joseph’s went wide with fear as he held his breath, hoping to stay still enough for her not to notice him. Nightmare Moon on the other hand was seeing red, as her pupils constricted. She began to show her teeth as she started growling. “W-Wait!” Joseph tried to say, in an attempt to keep her from mauling him. It only added fuel to the fire, “Did you just address me?” “I-I-” “Silence!” Nightmare Moon bellowed, “You hairless ape, you are nothing but trouble!” “But I didn’t even-” “How dare you address me, you pathetic swine!” Nightmare Moon seethed. “I-What?” “Begone, before you ruin everything!” She screamed. “Jesus Christ, what did I do?!” Joseph yelled, as he began to slowly walk backwards. “What haven’t you done? Just another peasant to reside in the castle, alongside the insufferable mare of the sun!” Nightmare Moon yelled, advancing towards the internally panicking human. “I-I didn’t even-” “Enough!” Nightmare Moon barked, reaching her breaking point, “Never address me again swine, return to your petty life, basked in the glow of Celestia.” Joseph gulped as he noticed the vegetation started to wilt with every step she took. His lack of response only fueled her anger more, as he was sent flying backwards with a blast of magic. When he recovered, all that remained of where the lunar villain stood was a scorch mark and black smoke. “Well, that was...something.” Joseph said to himself, as he tried to piece together the past few moments. ---          > Chapter 3 > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- “And what did I tell you?” Celestia asked sternly. “I-What? It’s not like I purposely went out and got hurt.” Joseph responded indignantly. “Obviously you did something to provoke her.” She added, patting his elbow with a piece of gauze. He hissed and flinched away, “You know that hurts a lot.” “Maybe you’ll learn something.” Celestia said in a slightly positive tone. “Learn what?” Joseph asked angrily. “To stop pestering Nightmare Moon.” Celestia answered. Joseph’s frustration grew immensely, rendering him speechless. He stuttered angrily at the sun princess, unable to form words. The white alicorn happily giggled while tending to the slightly battered human. “All because I just wanted to see the garden…” Joseph trailed off. “That’s another thing.” Celestia quickly said, glaring him down again. “Here we go…” “You couldn’t wait for me to show it to you?” Celestia asked, sounding hurt. “You should know that I just do things, without a lot of thought sometimes. Exploring is one of those things.” He answered. Celestia hummed, “I suppose…” She touched the gauze to the wound on his elbow again, causing him to jump, “Jesus Christ, knock it off, that hurts!” A smile worked its way onto the solar monarch’s face, “Oh, how about now?” Again she touched his elbow. “Ow! Damn, stop!” Joseph finally said, moving away from the giggling princess. “You brought this on yourself. Now take your punishment like a good boy.” Celestia said deviously, as she poured more alcohol onto the gauze. He gulped and began to back away from the princess, whose wide smile continued to grow as she closed in on him. This wasn’t going to end well. --- Joseph had pretended to learn from his mistakes to get away from the sadistic pony Celestia turned into, to prove a point. Though his wounds were bandaged up by the surprisingly medically inclined princess, his pride and feelings were still sore. While he tried his best to tone out Celestia as she explained to him the importance of not bothering the already angry villain. In that time, thoughts bounced around his head about the mare in question. It’s not like he was outright trying to pester the black alicorn, he merely wanted to clear his name. Which, in every instance he tried to do so backfired and probably add fuel to the fire, he was still slightly determined to have a civil coherent conversation with her. His thoughts also left him with many questions. Especially from one of his previous conversations with Celestia, that kept returning to his thoughts. Why didn’t Nightmare Moon want help? Initially it was a dumb question. Obviously she wouldn’t want help from the ones that defeated her several times, let alone brought her back in the first place. During his time with Celestia, he carefully pried information out of her about Nightmare Moon. The most he got from her, that there were hurt feelings on both sides and it was better to wait for her to come around rather than to push her away. Joseph personally felt like it was some sort of cop out, but left it at that. While he understood the difficulty of trying to help Nightmare Moon, especially since merely speaking to her got him injured, but it didn’t seem like anything was done. Eventually he was freed from Celestia’s reprimanding, setting out to clear his thoughts by wandering through the castle. Since his first wandering adventure with Celestia, Joseph now made it a point to explore the castle in his off time. All around him was history. History that had no meaning or relevance to him, but history none the less. When he wasn’t wandering, he was doing his best to brush up on the history of Equestria. Joseph’s history affixation was encouraged by Twilight Sparkle, but a common trend showed that most of the books fell short where he was most interested. Again, his thoughts would drift to the interesting subject of Nightmare Moon. She had been reformed long before he first arrived in Equestria. Though only a year had been spent away from his home planet, he had only seen the Queen of the Night a handful of times. Even then, they were mostly in passing, with her being uninterested in the highest degree. While he was around the castle a lot before becoming a resident, he rarely caught sight of her. Joseph tried his best to clear his thoughts from running a mile a minute during his walks, but to no use. Carefully, he would numb himself until he found himself before his chamber doors, hours later than his last conscious memory. --- The castle was quiet. Peacefully so. A gentle breeze came in through the open balcony doors and the lone window by the study. The cooler evening air swept through the room and around Joseph, as he sat quietly in one of his chairs. His gaze was casted outside, watching as Celestia’s fleeting rays of sunlight dipped below the horizon. Books lay scattered around in piles, their shelves barren save for dust and a few trinkets that didn’t belong to him. He’d been through every book that interested him, which scared him. He was never one for reading books. His mind was blank with boredom as he tried to keep his thoughts from traveling to Nightmare Moon. The peaceful atmosphere of the room was broken by knocking at the door. Joseph didn’t flinch, even when the second round of knocking came. A few precious seconds of silence passed before the door carefully squeaked open. “Sir?” The small voice of one of the castle maids called out. Again, he remained silent, staring straight ahead. The soft sound of hoofsteps reached his ears as the small gray mare came into view before stopping, “Um-S-Sir, Celestia has requested your presence in the dining hall.” Joseph took a loud deep breath as his eyes locked on to her, “Very well, tell her I’ll be there shortly.” “A-As you wish.” The mare replied with a bow, before turning and leaving. “Also,” Joseph called out, eliciting a squeak from the skittish mare, “Send a letter to Twilight. I need more books...Or a hobby.” “O-Okay.” He barely heard, as the door shut. Joseph rose carefully, his legs tired from his earlier adventures. He’d reached a new level of bored, mixed in with stewing about Celestia’s earlier lecture about Nightmare Moon. Hopefully he’d find something else to do besides read his life away with dusty tomes from years he couldn’t fathom. It was late. Joseph had guessed seven or eight o’clock by the lack of sunlight outside. He shuddered slightly at the mess the study had turned into. Though deemed it unimportant, and carefully set about traversing to the dining hall. --- The soft glow of candles illuminated the corridor to the dining hall. The gold glow giving warmth to the dark castle, shedding new light on the artifacts that lined the hall. His journey to his current location was uneventful. Ever so carefully he opened the large doors to the dining hall, before proceeding in. He was early, greeted by Celestia and Cadence who quietly sat at the massive dining table. A few castle staff members scurried to and fro, setting the table for the nights meal. Silently he walked towards the table, before loud hoofsteps drew him back to reality. A glance to his right showed Nightmare Moon herself. He froze, and instantly gained a glare from Celestia. She never came to meals. Up until now, Joseph was convinced that Nightmare Moon never ate a meal or at least in the company of others. The rarity of this was solidified by the looks of Celestia and Cadence. The Mistress of the Night was lost in her thoughts as she neared one of her greatest annoyances. It wasn’t until she was a few feet from him, that she realized where she was. With a confused glare, she glanced around the room before her eyes landed on the lone human before her. Internally, Joseph was doing his best to disappear as to not get physically assaulted by Nightmare Moon and to not get verbally assaulted by Celestia. Her lips curled down as a deep growl left her throat. Carefully Joseph backed up as slowly as he could, hoping she couldn’t sense motion. “Easy N-Nightmare Moon…” He stuttered nervously as her glare intensified. “Is it never enough for you?!” She bellowed, causing Joseph to flinch away. “I-” “What else must I do to portray my hate for you. I don’t want friendship, companionship, fellowship, comradeship or whatever synonym pleases your petty self! Now leave. Me. Alone. Forever.” Nightmare Moon seethed, though her eyes and expression showed otherwise. For once he saw an emotion that wasn’t rage. She seemed to slump slightly after her short tirade. Pain lied in her eyes as the corners of her mouth twitched downwards as her chest heaved. A distressed howl left her, before she disappeared into a blast of magic that both blinded and deafened Joseph. Slowly, his vision returned and the ringing in his ears subsided to show a not too pleased Celestia. “What?” He asked, partially in question. Celestia’s glare didn’t subside as she shook her head slightly. “Why are you shaking your head at me?” He added defensively. “Obviously you don’t remember an earlier conversation we had, do you?” Celestia asked in a terrifyingly calm voice. “Yeah, but I didn’t do anything. More importantly, someone should probably go check on her, because she seemed rather upset.” Joseph retorted.   “You need to not worry about her. Simply leave her alone as she has requested.” Celestia sternly warned. “I-But-What-” “Your Majesty?” A noble called out, stopping Celestia from further reprimanding. Quietly, she left the table to speak to the pony requesting her. Joseph’s gaze turned to Cadence, who looked at him sorrowfully, “I-What?” The Princess of Love sighed as he took a seat across from her, “Please, don’t take what Aunty had to say to heart. She’s trying to look out for both you and Nightmare Moon.” “But I didn’t even do anything this time!” Joseph tried to exclaim quietly, earning a quick glance across the room from Celestia. Again Cadence sighed, “I wish I could delve into this and help make sense of this for you but...it’s complicated. Please, know that she’s really trying to help you.” “Whatever.” He replied angrily, “But seriously, is someone going to see if she’s alright? Because that wasn’t normal pissed off, gonna end my life Nightmare Moon. That was something else.”   Quietly she whispered as to not alert Celestia, “I’ll check on her later if it’ll make you feel better.” A small smile appeared on his face, “Thank you.” Joseph deflated slightly as the sound of Celestia’s returning hoofsteps reached his ears. Here we go again…                                                  --- Dinner went as well as it could be while constantly under Celestia’s scrutinizing glare. Joseph remained as silent as he could, while Cadence glanced between him and Celestia awkwardly. Both beings seemingly trying to ignore each other's presence during the meal. The tense air of Joseph and Celestia went unnoticed by the others. Cadence had been distracted by her husband, and seemed preoccupied by everyone else at the table. Joseph’s appetite was ruined as he sat silently pouting at the table, playing with his food. Everyone else around him seemed to be ignoring him. Ever so carefully, he quietly left the table, going unnoticed for the most part. Celestia watched him slowly trudge away from the corner of her eye. The only other one at the table to take notice was Luna, who quirked an eyebrow. Luna’s silent question went unanswered as Joseph left the dining hall. --- If there was one thing that Joseph had learned in life, is that if you want something done right, you should do it yourself. Which currently had him wandering aimlessly around the castle in search of his destination. On a normal day, he barely knew his way around the castle, but now he was as lost as ever. He never asked where everyone’s chambers were, except for Celestia’s. But that was irrelevant to him, which he constantly reminded himself of as he traveled deeper in the castle. From what he could tell, as he continued on, he entered an older portion of the castle. From the pictures and tapestries on the walls, to the construction of the hallway. As he continued, the already empty halls felt even more so. Eerily so, leaving him looking over his shoulder every few seconds. Eventually he found himself in front of a large, intimidating door, marked by a crescent moon.                                                  --- The cool night air swept across the motionless, black form that was Nightmare Moon. Her head rested against the wide railing of her balcony, casting her gaze out over the darkened Equestria. Her body lay limply on the floor, as if a lifeless object. Nightmare Moon’s mane waved gently in an invisible, magical breeze. Her mind was blank, as her lifeless eyes focused on a distant mountain peak. It was almost peaceful, had it not been for the crushing loneliness and sadness that she felt, day in and day out. By now, she had hoped she would’ve become numb to those two feelings she knew all too well, but to no avail. Silently she hoped that it never happened. Why was she left to live? She could’ve accepted her fate and die honorably. But she was spared. Unwillingly so, left to pick up the shattered pieces left of the life she thought she lived. Left, to discover what she was, and left alone in the old part of the castle. Unhampered, lonely, quiet. That was her life now, until she either ended it all or awaited the end of time. Nightmare Moon was pulled from her thoughts by the sound of gentle knocking. At first she was confused, before looking back into her room towards the door. Ever so carefully, the door opened letting in the last being she wanted to see. A long sigh left her as she turned away, more interested in the view than him.                                                  --- Joseph held his breath as he opened the door and quietly slipped in. Her room was dim and surprisingly empty. The balcony doors were open, and the curtains haphazardly blowing around in the night breeze. He could see her, laying on the floor of the balcony. His heart dropped briefly, his mind bringing up the worst thing that could’ve happened. Softly, he walked through her room before stopping at the balcony doors. He held his breath again as he looked her over. Nightmare’s breathing was gentle, and she didn’t look at him as he walked up. Joseph knew he was walking on eggshells as he carefully thought out what he was going to say. “Hey-uh, Nightmare Moon?” Joseph delicately asked, bracing himself for an onslaught of words. Though, all he received was a sigh. “Do you-uh, mind if I-?” “It’s not like if I said something, that it would stop you.” Nightmare Moon spoke in a soft voice, not bothering to look at him. Joseph’s heart dropped as he heard the sad tone hidden in her voice. Ever so carefully he approached her left side, before gently sitting the the railing. He received a sideways glance, but nothing more. “I-uh, came to see if you were...okay.” Joseph said, in a low tone, trying to break the silence that fell over them. “I’m fine.” The coldness in her voice could’ve rivaled the night air. “Well, you obviously aren’t.” He retorted in a slightly irritated tone. “What does it matter to you? You’re just like the rest of them.” Nightmare moon said, sadness and anger mixing in her voice. “Unlike the rest of them, I seem to be the only one that cared to see if you were alright after your break down.” Joseph replied harshly, silencing her either out of awe or anger. There was a long pause as Joseph watched her. Her breathing was no longer calm, now sporadic. Nightmare’s body shook slightly with suppressed sobs, as glistening tears trailed down her cheeks. Unsure of what to do, Joseph silently watched as the Queen of the Night broke down in front of him. After a few moments, she spoke, “Do you know what it’s like, to be hated, shunned and abandoned? I was brought back to this life against my will. I’m imprisoned here, alone in the castle. Having to see the outcome of my actions everyday is like reopening wounds and pouring salt in them. It hurts to be here, to be conscious, to be alive. To live this life that isn’t even mine. “I am nothing. A broken, useless version of Luna, whose only good at failing and hurting everyone she touches. All of the memories I have, the feelings that well up inside of me, the life I’m living, is not mine. Just a copy of Luna that everypony brushed aside and cares nothing about. Just a mistake to be paraded around by Celestia to show her worth, only to be thrown away afterwards. “I yearn for the release from this life. If I could end it all I’d do it in a heartbeat. I’m worthless, destined for a life of loneliness and solitude, and to relive all of my mistakes until I become completely numb.” Nightmare Moon continued to spill her feelings. Her eyes never left a fixed point off in the distance. Eventually her voice became quiet as she sat there blankly, barely breathing as everything left her. “Nightmare Moon-” Joseph started, but was cut off. “Please, don’t call me that.” She pleaded softly, lowering her head, “That name was given to me by those who feared me. It hurts to hear it said.” “Forgive my ignorance, but, to me, you’re a mare of the night who is associated with the moon. Nothing more, nothing less.” Joseph said with a hint of sternness in his voice in an attempt to ease her worries. A look confusion met Joseph as he continued, “In our lives, we make mistakes. Our pasts may be made up of mistakes and unresolved issues, but at some point in time we have to move on. If you live your life with no tomorrows, everyday, will just lead to sorrow. “Basically what I’m trying to say, is live, Nightmare Moon. Move on from your past. It’ll be hard, but if you stay in your past, it’ll kill you. And personally, I wouldn’t want that to happen to you.” Joseph concluded. Nightmare’s shimmering eyes were illuminated by the night sky. She was in disbelief, the being she treated so terrible sat next to her speaking comforting words. What he said in a few minutes was more than others did in a month's time. Even after the nasty things she said and did to him, he spoke to her. Her thoughts turned against her. Maybe she was wrong for acting the way she did when he was near her. “And to say you deserve to be alone, is asinine. For what, making eternal night? Personally, I wouldn’t have minded it, but no one deserves to be alone forever.” He added, his hand carefully gripping her hoof that rested on the railing. Nightmare Moon was at an even greater loss for words. He was holding her hoof. In an instant her cheeks were set ablaze with a red blush as she perked up, as if new life was breathed into her. He was even complimenting her plans to plunge the world into eternal night. Her mind began to race a mile a minute, barely able to comprehend what was going on. “W-Why?” She stuttered, the only thing she could say. “I don’t know, really. You were kind of a gargantuan bitch to me, but I figured misery loves company.” Joseph replied. Nightmare Moon scoffed and rolled her eyes before something strange happened. A small smile formed on her lips as she looked up at him, mirroring his expression. This was the start of a new chapter in her life, and Nightmare Moon was bringing Joseph along for the ride. *        *        *               > Chapter 4 > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- The greatest internal conflict raged on violently inside Joseph’s mind. He was purposely walking himself into foreign, dangerous territory. He had no real gain from it, only the answers to a few questions that didn’t concern him. This was going to end like everything else in the past couple of days, with a whole lot of yelling. Joseph cleared his throat nervously, “Celestia, do you-uh, have a second?” “Of course.” The sun princess responded, looking up from her paper. He watched her facial expression carefully as he planned out his thoughts, “Can we talk about Nightmare Moon?” Celestia’s calm expression soured as her eyes donned an icy glare, causing Joseph to hesitate. “Before you start yelling, let me speak.” His voice wavered slightly, diffusing her growing agitation as she let out an impatient huff. “I’m really trying to understand this whole issue between you, her, and me.” He started, followed by Celestia sitting up straighter and leaning in, “I know it isn’t any of my business, but, why are you treating her like this? Why are you treating me like this?” A long sigh came from the Sun Princess before she spoke calmly, “Is this the most appropriate thing to be talking about right now?” “I mean, I feel like I’m owed some sort of an explanation after all of your disciplinary actions I’ve dealt with.” Joseph replied carefully. An annoyed huff left the Princess accompanied by a frown, “While your courage and persistence is admirable, at this point in time it is becoming a pain in my flank.” A large sigh left Celestia, before she stated rather dryly, “Very well then, you want explanations, ask away. Just don’t be surprised by my answers.” “I know I asked this before, but why did you try to reform her?” Joseph asked carefully. “Like I stated before, Luna was the one that pleaded that I not hurt her. Personally, I would’ve banished her for another thousand years in a heartbeat.” She said bluntly. “Why?” “Because I’ve seen what she’s done. What she is, and there’s something not entirely right about her. Though, it may be a thousand years of bitter resentment influencing my opinion. When Discord had his run of trying to take over Equestria, he did it with chaos and immature jokes. Nightmare Moon took it to a personal level. My filly sister, last close member of my family, was turned against me, then taken away. Her life destroyed alongside mine. While she suffered for Nightmare Moon’s actions, I picked up the pieces for a thousand years, upon her return and to this day, Luna is attempting at mending everything that was decimated by that monster.” Celestia responded, the anger clear in her words. “I mean, I can’t really blame you for feeling that way.” Joseph said, which surprised the Sun Goddess, “But, that does not warrant the emotional distress that she faces everyday, and reprimanding me for being remotely close to her.” “For that, I will apologize for my actions,” Celestia started, “But do know my reasoning is just. I have seen what she has done, and what she can do. I refuse to let her affect another being the way she did my sister.” “I especially wish to not see that happen to you, while you can be a mild annoyance occasionally,” She said, punctuated with a smirk, “I do not want to see your life destroyed by something that can be stopped.” A small smile crossed Joseph’s lips, “I appreciate the sentiment, but I feel I am capable of watching after myself around her.” “Very well, I will respect your wishes, but please, do not fall victim to her.” Celestia said in a lighter tone, “While I grant you freedom to consort with her, I’ll be keeping an eye on you two.” “That’s fine, thank you.” “I also said before, that you cannot help somepony that doesn’t want help. Reformation is a two way street, I have attempted to help her and received nothing in return. Eventually, you have to move on.” Celestia concluded. “Thank you for answering these questions for me. I will take into consideration what you said, but, last night when I spoke to her, she entrusted me enough that she didn’t start screaming at the sight of me.” Joseph said, causing Celestia to think to herself briefly. “While I know my feelings about her are rather strong, I may have a change of heart. If she can confide in you, then so be it. If you wish to help her along in reforming, I’ll grant you the freedom to, but still remember, she can be dangerous.” Celestia negotiated, killing two birds with one stone. A wide smile crossed Joseph’s face, “Thank you Celestia. I promise to do my best.” Celestia smiled as well, “Good, now if you will excuse me, my court sense is tingling, telling me that the nobles are growing restless in day court.” Carefully she folded up her paper and rose from her chair before walking away. “See ya later.” Joseph called out, suppressing his happiness of the small victory he won. While she seemed slightly cross, he hoped she could forgive him in the coming days.                                                 --- Hoofsteps echoed throughout the lone corridor. For once, Nightmare Moon had emerged before her moon loomed overhead. Her aimless wandering had landed her on the edges of the new castle. Foreign territory laid before her, as she tentatively stepped into the brighter, newer section of the castle. She wasn’t really sure what she was doing this far outside of her section of the castle. She had full control over the old portion of the castle, and only ventured into the other part of the castle on rare occasions, usually when she was tormenting the newest castle guest. A small, smug smile crossed her lips at the thought of Joseph getting yelled at by Celestia. Him getting in trouble was a slightly amusing unintended consequence. A few moments passed before a sigh left her, and her chest tightened in an odd manner. Nightmare Moon couldn’t recall a time where she’d felt like that. Another sigh left her as guilt clouded her mind. Even after everything she’d done, he approached her with kindness. Her mind went back to when she actually had a civil conversation with him. It had been a few days since then, and she hated to admit it, but she felt better about herself. Everything wasn’t sunshine and rainbows, but waking up didn’t hurt so much, and for once, she could look at herself in the mirror. Nightmare Moon could also stand being slightly near Joseph, for once, no longer feeling the need to chase him off. A sigh left Nightmare Moon, while she hated to admit it, maybe she was wrong about the human all along. Maybe he was honest in what he said. It was hard for her to decipher who was true and who was bluffing, which led to her hostile demeanor. Slowly she came to a stop, releasing a pent up breath. She stood still, closing her eyes while carefully trying to slow her rapid thoughts. Basked in the warmth of the sun, Nightmare Moon managed to calm herself and mind. It felt as if a tremendous weight had been lifted from her chest as she stood there, slowly running his words through her head. In an instant, her eyes shot open and she groaned. No matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t get Joseph out of her head. Nightmare Moon settled for silence as a small frown crossed her lips, maybe he had cast a spell on her. Before she could follow through on that train of thought, the faint sound of someone calling out her name echoed down the corridor. Nightmare paused for a moment as her ears swiveled towards the other end of the hall. Maybe she was hearing things, or the voices in her head were getting more rambunctious than before. It wasn’t until her name was repeated, that her head snapped towards the direction of the sound. Cautiously she proceeded towards the echoing cacophony that traveled down the long hallway. Before she realised it, she was trotting faster and faster down random corridors, chasing the sound of her name. Nightmare Moon was seemingly entranced by the familiar, yet strange calling that she heard.   Without consciously realising her location, Nightmare Moon found herself before an unfamiliar door. Carefully she waited and listened, sounds she could never fathom emanating from the other side of the door. Shrill wails and screams of an instrument she could not place swirled around her as she carefully listened to the odd, driving beat of the song. Though muffled, the deep vocals of the singer and strange instruments mixed together into a mess of sounds, that Nightmare Moon found herself taking a liking to. Time seemed to slow as she continued to eavesdrop from the other side of the door. As the verses progressed, the words she heard perplexed her. “As your nightmare comes to life?” She said to herself, “What does that mean?” Her curiosity reaching a breaking point along with her patience running out, Nightmare Moon carefully turned the knob on the door and peered in. Instantly her ears laid flat against her metal headpiece, in a poor attempt to protect her hearing. Nightmare Moon was sure this was the loudest thing she’d ever heard. Nightmare Moons’ eyes scanned throughout the room, landing on the seated form of a familiar human. It now occurred to her how deep into the new castle she was. Slowly the door closed, concealed by the deafening roar, which seemingly came from everywhere all at once. Now on the inside, everything was completely different. The floor thumped to the beat of the drums, as she could feel the vibrations traveling through her bones. The once muffled voice, was now clear and screaming into both of her ears. With a slight look of pain, she stood still, slowly adjusting to the incredibly loud sounds that surrounded her. Before her in the dim room sat Joseph. His back was to her, silhouetted by the window before him, which he gazed out of. The music managed to conceal her as she carefully approached him. As her audible cover faded away, she froze behind him. Before Nightmare Moon could form a thought, the shrill wails of a familiar alien instrument pierced her ears. A steady beat accompanied the wails as she was once again hidden in sound. This song was different, she noted. From what she could deduce, the same instruments were played with a different outcome. As the song progressed, she slowly found herself enjoying the beat. The lyrics intrigued her with the tellings of a brutal king. Until she heard something perplexing. “Daylight to the night?” Nightmare Moon scoffed, “How preposterous.” Before Nightmare Moon could realize her mistake, an unceremonious, nearly female yelp left Joseph. The ringing in her ears became apparent when the alien music was quickly silenced. Once the startled human managed to pick himself up off of the floor, he turned towards her with a furious glare. “Sweet christ!” He yelled, “Warn me next time!” Slowly the corners of Nightmare Moon’s mouth began to turn up, as a smile crossed her lips. Though it didn’t stop there, as she began to roar with laughter. It was a peculiar sight for Joseph, who now had witnessed another rare emotion that she had. While he watched her, his irritation slowly dissolved. For once she seemed free. The worries of her world seemed to be shrugged off as she enjoyed herself. It probably wasn’t often that she laughed, or felt something other than misery. A small smile came to Joseph’s face as her laughter turned to sporadic giggles. She needed to laugh and smile more, he concluded, she looked better when she did. “Are you enjoying yourself?” Joseph asked, a hint of amusement in his voice. Nightmare Moon paused in an awkward silence, attempting to formulate words “Quite?” They both fell into silence as Nightmare Moon averted her eyes, focusing on a random spot on the wall. “So...if you don’t mind me asking, besides scaring the living shit out of me, what are you doing in my room?” He carefully asked, hoping not to lose all of the ground he had gained. Nightmare Moon looked back to him, “There was this, peculiar noise, which called out my name. As I followed it, I had found myself before your chambers. Care to explain why?” “I was just listening to music.” He retorted, his cheeks reddening slightly. “I know I was on the moon for one thousand years, but I beg to differ.” She spoke, her eyes narrowing ever so slightly. He rolled his eyes, “That’s because it’s music from where I’m from.” “Do they not know what music is there?” She added with a small smirk. “Har har.” Joseph snarked. Once again they fell into silence. “So…” Joseph sighed, attempting to break up the awkwardness. “I must admit though, that my curiosity has been piqued.” Nightmare Moon mumbled before averting her eyes. A smug grin crossed Joseph's’ lips, “So it isn’t so bad, eh?” An unamused glare was affixed on his eyes by Nightmare Moon. The tension in the air grew, as Joseph chuckled nervously. Though, relief washed over him as a small smile worked it’s way onto Nightmare Moon’s face. Nightmare Moon was actually being honest, the alien music had caught her attention. Like Twilight’s need to learn about pointless things, Nightmare Moon wished to hear more of the strange music. There was an interesting air of comfort she felt being in his room, which managed to suppress the voices in her head that were telling her otherwise. “Alright, I suppose.” Joseph sighed in defeat, “C’mon over here, I’ll try not to make your ears bleed.” The smile on her face grew as she trotted over to one of the chairs in the disaster zone of a study. Nightmare Moon managed to suppress her slight anxiousness and sit still, while Joseph mumbled to himself. ---   The calm silence that had filled the room was only pierced by a slight ringing sound. Celestia’s sun had long ago set, causing darkness to creep across her kingdom and into Joseph’s chambers. A few candles scattered around the study bathed the room in a warm, dim glow. “You humans are so...cryptic with you music.” Nightmare Moon commented, lost in thought. Joseph smiled softly, “It’s just because you don’t understand the lyrics.” Nightmare Moon scrunched up her face in a mock pout, before chuckling quietly. The smile on Joseph’s face grew after seeing her in such a relaxed state. A subtle knock caught both of their attentions, before the door was unceremoniously kicked in. Nightmare Moon was on her hooves and in a defensive stance before the door could bounce off of the wall. She was perched and ready to attack, her pupils constricted to small slits while her wings unfurled slightly. “Joseph~” Luna sung as she strolled in. “Guess what day it is!” Chirped Twilight, following closely behind her marefriend. Nightmare Moon physically relaxed upon the sight of Luna, but didn’t lose her frown when she saw Twilight. “Oh-Hello Nightmare Moon.” Luna said in a surprised tone. A small smile formed on her face as her gaze focused on Luna. “Is this a bad time?” Twilight asked in a lower tone, moving towards Joseph. “Nope.” Joseph calmly responded, turning towards the two Princesses. “Is friday night pizza still happening?” Luna asked with a hint of worry. A smile spread across Joseph’s face, “Of course it is, I just lost track of time.” Twilight and Luna both smiled wide, “Good, now let us make haste; we’ve been waiting all day for this.” “Alright, give me a second.” Joseph said, standing up and stretching. He carefully collected a couple bits and his phone. Slowly he slipped on his boots before turning back towards Luna and Twilight. Both Princesses attempted to ignore the awkward silence that had fallen around them. It quickly dawned on him that Nightmare Moon was still in his presence. “Where are you going?” Nightmare Moon innocently questioned. Twilight and Luna shared a look, before Luna spoke up, “It has become a tradition to acquire pizza every friday night, since Joseph first arrived in Equestria.” “Pizza?” Nightmare Moon added. “Have you never had pizza?” Joseph asked incredulously. She seemed confused as her brows furrowed, “Forgive me, for I do not get out much.” “Pizza is composed of round or square flat dough, covered in tomato sauce and cheese.” Twilight chirped, while Luna began to drool slightly. “Sounds...appetizing.” Nightmare moon commented condescendingly. “It is, so, you wanna join us?” Joseph asked, surprising all three mares. Luna and Twilight shared another look before looking back to him, “Are you sure?” “Yeah, why not?” Joseph asked, a hint of sternness in his voice. “Just-Celestia might not like it if you don’t notify her ahead of time.” Twilight said carefully, forcing a small smile. “Psh-I ain’t worried about Celestia.” Joseph nonchalantly said with a wave of his hand, “So are we going, or what?” “I-I don’t know if that would be best.” Nightmare Moon finally spoke up, the nervousness in her words didn’t go unnoticed, “Being outside of the castle isn’t exactly-” “-Oh c’mon.” Joseph pleaded with a small grin, “Everything’ll be fine.” Nightmare Moon was silent in thought. She idly chewed on her cheek in an attempt to hide her anxiousness. “I suppose.” She tentatively said. Joseph smiled widely, “Great, you two cool?” Luna and Twilight simply shrugged. “Sure.” “Yeah.” “Good, now let’s get going!” --- The walk out of the castle was relatively uneventful. They had managed to go unnoticed by Celestia, though a few guards sideways glances didn’t go unnoticed. Though the same couldn’t be said for their trip outside. Between Joseph and Nightmare Moon, every noble they encountered stopped and stared at them. Most turned up their noses and trotted away, while others innocently looked on from a distance. While their group wasn’t the strangest thing in downtown Canterlot, they continued to draw attention. Twilight and Luna had learned to ignore the snobbish nobles. Nightmare Moon on the other hand, was being eaten alive on the inside by it. She wished for nothing more than to rip into them. How she yearned to enslave the worthless worms to an eternity of hard labor. A small smile worked its way onto her face as she thought about the corruption she could spread through the streets, and turn Equestria into the militaristic country it could be. Joseph was caught up in his own mental ramblings. As they trekked onwards, he took note of her lighter expression. In the past couple of days, he’d been there when she was her happiest and not so happiest. It was a rare sight, but she seemed momentarily free from the demons that controlled her. He subtly watched her, scanning the crowds of ponies around her as the smile slowly slipped away from her face. Nightmare Moon’s gaze remained pinned to the ground, her head sinking low and her pace slowing down. “Hey, you okay?” Joseph asked softly, looking over to the downtrodden villain. “Their looks.” Nightmare Moon started, despair coursing through her words, “I cannot stand their looks.” For what seemed like the first time, Joseph actually took note of the amount of ponies watching them. A sneer crossed his lips as he turned back to the dark mare. “Don’t feel bad. They’re probably looking at me more than you.” Joseph said. Nightmare Moon quirked an eyebrow, “What do you mean?” “Ever since I arrived here, the nobility of Canterlot looked down on me. Some see me as an animal, others as an exotic toy.” He stated plainly, “No matter what you do, if you don’t carry around a piss bucket for them, they’ll look down their nose at you.” Nightmare Moon was taken back, “How dare they? I shall condemn them for disrespecting such a kind human. Their bodies will hang in the streets, and their children shall beat them with sticks.” Joseph tried to muffle his chuckles as a warm smile crossed Nightmare Moon’s lips. Ahead of them a little ways, Luna and Twilight looked back at them with questioning glances. They hid their small smiles and simply shrugged them off before turning back around. Before long they had finally reached their destination. A little shop sitting on the border of the castle walls and the shopping district of Canterlot. The remnants of daylight was replaced by orange streetlights. The cool night air swirled around the group as the Canterlot night inhabitants began to emerge. Quickly they entered the dimly lit restaurant. The store was simple, a counter displaying various pizzas, a drink cooler, and tables sporadically placed around the floor and by the windows. The store was warm from the ovens and smelled of fresh dough and vegetables. Given the time of night, the store was slightly packed. Ponies of every kind and class occupied tables throughout the store. Quietly, they picked a table by the front windows, watching ponies travel to and fro. Nightmare Moon and Luna sat next to each other, while Twilight and Joseph took the other side of the table. In an instant, a bubbly blue mare stood beside the table. An apron was tied around her chest and a pen and pad of paper in her magical grip. “What can I get y’all to drink?” She asked. “Uh-water.” “Tea, please.” “Lemonade.” “I will drink water as well.” The mare gave a slightly queer expression as she looked at Nightmare Moon, before disappearing. “So what’re you thinking?” Luna asked rhetorically, but directed it more to Twilight. “I don’t know, let’s see.” The two Princesses went back and forth quietly as Joseph entertained himself with his phone. Nightmare watched on in interest as Joseph’s face lit up with a faint blue glow. “This is still an unfathomable thing.” Nightmare Moon commented, her magic gently taking it from his hands. “Such a unique piece of technology.” She continued, looking over the phone as if there was a hidden key on it’s surface, “Relinquish your secrets!” Joseph couldn’t help his cheeky smile as Nightmare Moon pouted over her failure of turning the phone on. “Here, let me help you.” Joseph said, reaching over the table and hitting the power button. Nightmare Moon was completely flabbergasted as the screen came to life, “What magical powers are stored inside.” A voice calling out from just behind them caught almost everyone’s attention, “Is that my two favorite princesses and human I see?” Twilight didn’t have to turn and see before she smiled and responded, “Hey Rocky.” A tan stallion with a black mane and a dirty white apron came into view. His smile was wide at seeing his favorite customers, as he came to a stop at the side of the table. “I see you’re all back again.” He commented, which was met with friendly smiles, “And I see you brought a...guest.” Joseph could sense his slight unease as he looked over to the entertained villain, “It’s cool Rocky.” The stallion nodded slightly, “So, what can I get for all of you?” “We’ll just get a medium veggie-lover and a medium cheese pizza.” Luna said, folding up the menus and handing them to the chef. Rocky smiled, “It’ll be right out.” He quickly disappeared, leaving everyone in silence. Except Nightmare Moon, who seemed infatuated with the infinite secrets that were held on Joseph’s alien technology. “This device, holds whole orchestras, plays and art galleries.” Nightmare Moon commentated to anyone who would listen, “And it is no larger than my hoof.” Before Nightmare Moon could delve into more of her ramblings, two large pizzas were laid on the table before them. With a minor motion from Joseph, Nightmare Moon turned her attention away from his tantalizing phone, to the food before her. Wordlessly everyone began to dig in. Nightmare Moon followed suit, picking up a slice and taking a tentative bite. Her eyes went wide as she looked at the slice of pizza in amazement. “This is the food of gods.” She declared, “Unlike the peasant food that is force fed at the castle.” They all smiled at that and continued on eating in silence. After a few minutes, mostly everyone had had their fill. Twilight and Luna looked satisfied as they reclined in their seats in a very un-princess-like fashion. On the other hand, Nightmare Moon and Joseph were devouring anything that was left on their plates. Nightmare Moon seemed the happiest, bits of pizza on her muzzle. Her human counterpart took notice, carefully reaching across the table with a napkin and helping her. Twilight and Luna watched on as a light red tint washed over Nightmare Moon’s cheeks. Joseph seemed unfazed, leaning back afterwards and relaxing like the others. As Nightmare Moon recovered, she spoke, “How I wish to have discovered this delectable cuisine sooner, as to not have to suffer through the cheap food provided at the castle.” Everyone smiled and chuckled softly before Rocky re-emerged, pulling up a chair and taking a seat at the side of the table. Nightmare Moon watched on silently, as the other three conversed with their seemingly long time friend.                                                               --- Time had escaped them as they spent a bit talking to the restaurant owner. Though afterwards they said their goodbyes and began to head back to the castle. The trip back to the was painless as ever. Almost all of the nobles had long since been in bed, the only other ponies of the street were those of the night. Who, debatably, were about as funny looking as the princesses, villain, and human. The journey back went by quick, as their full stomachs ached slightly with every step they took. Carefully they had slipped back inside the castle, managing not to alert any guards patrolling the grounds. Once safely inside, they parted ways, leaving Joseph and Nightmare Moon on their own, as they wandered around the halls towards their rooms. They moved in silence, content with being in each other's presence. Without realizing it, they both had found themselves before the doors to Joseph’s chambers. Joseph slowed to a stop before turning towards his dark companion. “I suppose this is it for tonight.” Joseph said with a tired smile, his eyes barely slits as he tried to keep them open. A small smile crossed Nightmare Moon’s lips, “So it seems.” There was a pause before she continued, “I wish to thank you for tonight, for giving me a chance.” Even in his tired state, Joseph acknowledged her sincerity as she struggled to form a proper sentence, “It’s fine Nightmare Moon.” Her smile grew as a slight wave of relief crossed over her face, “I shall not delay you any longer. Goodnight Joseph.” His smile never left him as he turned and opened his door, before yawning out a reply, “G’night Nighty.” She froze instantly. Her chest tightened again in the odd, yet now familiar manner. The door to his room closed gently, leaving her to her own devices in the hallway. “Nighty?” She thought to herself, “He’s surely tired...He wouldn’t, would he?” A small voice told her to question him, but she relented and started her own journey back to her end of the castle, her mind plagued once again by the peculiar human. *        *        *                                 > Chapter 5 > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- “Do you know why I called you here?” An annoyed sigh left the lone human as he gazed up at the white alicorn before him, “No I don’t Celestia, how about you remind me?” “I don’t find your sarcasm amusing.” Celestia deadpanned, her eyes narrowing on him. There was a pause as they stared at each other. Joseph, pouting like a child caught red handed and Celestia, the mother that was about to viciously beat said child. “Though you were given permission to assist Nightmare Moon during her reformation, that does not mean you can leave castle grounds whenever you wish.” Celestia stated. Celestia paced back and forth slowly, silent in thought while she waited for his rebuttal. Meanwhile Joseph sat quietly in anger before the Sun Princess, attempting to not flip out on the ruler of the country, and the one that let him stay in the castle. “All we did, was go out for pizza.” He replied, keeping his tone level. “While your intentions may have been innocent, the consequences were not.” Celestia added, “I would appreciate it if you notified me next time, so a guard escort can be arranged and a warning sent to the nobles.” “Celestia, she was fine. She was almost too nervous to step outside, let alone hurt anyone.” Joseph said, “And what do you mean ‘warn the nobles’?” “It is not her I worry about, Joseph.” Celestia said in harsh tone, “Do you know how many nobles came to court today with complaints?” “Are you serious?” He asked, his blood beginning to boil. “Yes, because a national villain was walking amongst the public unsupervised.” She stated. “Fuck ‘em.” Joseph said under his breath. “What was that?” Celestia asked, her frustration starting to boil over. Joseph paused in thought for all of one second before replying, “Fuck. Them. Celestia. Fuck them and their petty shit. Fuck their complaints, fuck what they think. And fuck. This. Horse. Shit.” The chair he sat in teetered on its back legs as he got up and began trudging away. “Do you think it’s that easy?!” Celestia all but screamed, stopping Joseph dead in his tracks. Slowly he turned to her as she sighed, “They can have her taken away. And you, for that matter.” Joseph’s anger melted away as his heart sunk, “What?” Celestia’s head lowered as she looked away. “What do you mean, ‘they can take us away’?” His tone was low and in awe as he slowly approached her. “Banishment, imprisonment...Execution.” Celestia said, nearly mumbling. “Not so much in your case, but had this happened a few hundred years ago, Nightmare Moon could’ve been put to death for what she did.” She added. Joseph eyed her intently, watching as her expression grew somber. “When Nightmare Moon and yourself entered this world, the nobles demanded I do something to remedy the situation. As you know, the nobles aren’t exactly accepting of those who are different. So, I proposed a plan, which entailed reforming Nightmare Moon and moving the two of you into my castle.” Celestia spoke, her tone level as she winced with pain as the words left her. Joseph felt like his world was falling apart around him, “So you’re saying, that the only reason I’m here, is to appease the nobles?” Celestia’s silence told him more than enough. A breath of air left him like he had been punched in the chest, as he slowly returned to the chair he had occupied earlier. His gaze went off into the distance, as he thought about his existence in the world her currently resided in. “That’s just-” He sighed, “Wow. That’s-that’s fucked.” “Please, Joseph, know that what I have done was with everyone’s best interests in mind.” Celestia reasoned, “It was a way of keeping you safe, and Nightmare Moon.” A long sigh left her before she continued, “But, if they see her roaming freely, or you for that matter, they will think that my proposal isn’t working. Which-opens up the floor for ideas how to address the situation.” “And they have radical ideas…” Joseph finished. Another sigh left the white alicorn as she slowly came to a rest next to him, “Exactly.” “How can you live your life dealing with these-monsters on a daily basis?” Joseph asked, looking over at her. “Politics.” She simply stated, “I don’t expect you to understand, and I understand if you resent me for what choices I have made.” Joseph sighed, “No, no, I understand why you’ve done what you’ve done. It’s, well, politics…” “Mhmm.” Celestia hummed in acknowledgement. “I just, I don’t know. Everything feels false and hollow, like me being here doesn’t make sense.” He said, “It’s not like it did before, but it just feels-empty.” “While I may have ulterior motives, know that my kindness and hospitality were pure.” Celestia spoke, her friendly smile working its way back onto her face, “Know that I would never let anything happen to you while you stay here.” Celestia paused, earning a glance out of Joseph. “And even Nightmare Moon.” A small smile crossed his lips as he scoffled lightly, “Thanks Celestia, I-just, need to go take a nap or something.” “Very well. If you need to talk, I’ll be here for the rest of the day.” Celestia said, before rising and slowly wandering away. “Celestia.” Joseph called out, making the Solar Monarch pause and look back, “Thanks.” Her smile widened before she nodded slightly, before turning away and exiting the room. ---     Joseph aimlessly wandered to and fro as he trudged down the corridor. His thoughts were a constant repeat of the conversation he had with Celestia. No matter how much he tried to talk himself into thinking everything was fine, he found himself breaking down. His body seemingly carried on by itself, while his brain all but shut off and began wallowing in self pity. His thoughts drifted elsewhere. He tried his best not to be overcome with bitter hatred for the nobles of Canterlot, and Celestia herself. Joseph was an emotional mess. He understood Celestia was trying to do what’s best for everyone, and given the other option, had been doing a good job. Though he couldn’t help but feel hollow. What if Celestia had faked the hospitality that he received? What if his friends from Ponyville were informed, and faked friendship with him? Was everything part of a master plan set by Celestia? His stomach dropped with his next thought. What if Nightmare Moon was apart of this?   Joseph broke himself from his caustic thoughts, attempting to rid his mind of the concept of her being in on Celestia’s plan. In a twisted way, he began to understand the hatred Nightmare Moon held towards the Solar Goddess.   Before he could follow anymore thoughts, he was interrupted by the mare in question. Her dark fur was a great contrast to the bright light that reflect off of the white walls of the corridor. A gentle smile crossed her lips, as her feline-like pupils dilated slightly. Her eyes locked onto his as he gazed up at her. “Goodday, Joseph.” Nightmare Moon said, her smile widening. A low sigh left him before responding, “Hey Nightmare Moon.” Nightmare Moon eyed him carefully as his form seemingly deflated. “Is something the matter?” She asked, her head cocked slightly. Joseph physically deflated, as he slowly slumped against the wall and slid to the floor. Nightmare Moon watched on in a mild panic as he stilled himself. Another sigh left the distressed human, sendling slight relief through the black alicorn. Carefully, she knelt down onto the cool marble floor, carefully watching Joseph. “I don’t really know where to begin…” --- “That insufferable mare!” Nightmare Moon shouted, pacing back and forth in an effort to contain her rage. She was resisting the urge to confront the sun princess. “Nightmare Moon, It’s-just-” “Just what, Joseph?” She started, “That it is acceptable for her to answer to the peasants she calls nobles!” “I don’t know, I-” “I should address this issue immediately.” Nightmare said harshly, starting to head towards the throne room. “Nightmare Moon!” Joseph yelled, surprising the dark mare and stopping her in her tracks, “Don’t. What if it makes things worse, what if she has me taken away...Or you? I mean, it’s not that bad right? We get treated okay.” A growl escaped her, “Why should we settle for being treated like prisoners.” Joseph sighed, before letting his head rest against the wall, “Because there’s nothing we can do about it, and you know it. All it’ll do is get us in deeper.” Nightmare Moons’ head lowered in acknowledgement, “I swear, when I rise to power I’ll enslave them all, and show you the treatment you deserve.” Joseph remained silent, losing himself in thought. He was defeated, there was nothing they could do to revolt against Celestia. Either way, something would happen to them--to her. His train of thought was interrupted by the black mare, “Come.” She stated in an almost emotionless tone, “I will not let her ruin your mood and the rest of the day.” --- The imprisoned duo found themselves wandering aimlessly down another one of the many hallways inside the castle. Unbeknownst to the downtrodden human, Nightmare Moon was silently steering their travels to accomplish her need to assist her friend. “Nightmare Moon, I’m fine, honestly.” Joseph said in a persuasive tone. “Nonsense,” She retorted, “I will not allow you to wallow in self you own misery.” A scoff left the now slightly annoyed human, “Seriously, I just need a nap or something.” “Joseph, this is not up for debate.” Nightmare Moon said in a stern tone, stopping the two along their journey. Joseph sighed, “Alright, what do you have planned then?” Nightmare Moon was struck silent for being put on the spot, “Would you like to go listen to some of your world’s music?” “So you’re saying you want to listen to music?” He said, a grin spreading across his lips as Nightmare Moon blushed and began stuttering slightly. “Alright, let's go.” Joseph quickly added, cutting short her self inflicted awkwardness. “Splendid!” Nightmare Moon all but nearly shouted, her mild embarrassment melting away. In a literal flash, Joseph found himself on the floor of his chambers. A blur of black looked down upon him, presumably his dark furred companion. It was hard for him to tell, since the room was spinning so fast. Though slowly, it slowed down and she came back into focus. Nightmare Moon was in obvious distress as she frantically watched his unmoving form. Her lips moved quickly and silently, the sound of her muffled voice and ringing mixed within his ears. Nightmare Moon’s eyes shimmered with worry as she gently prodded him. Ever so slowly, the numbness left his body as his senses came back to him.   Weakly, his hand cupped her cheek before he spoke, “I’m fine, Nightmare Moon.” Nightmare Moon sighed with relief before slumping down to the floor, “Please forgive me. I never wished to hurt you. Please, don’t hate me.” “It’s okay, Nightmare Moon.” He said softly, letting his hand run down her neck. “I didn’t know…” She solemnly said. “Magic affects me in different ways than it does you. My body isn’t exactly made to teleport, so it’s not recommended I do. Or else, it throws all of my senses out of whack. Though I can prepare for it, in an effort to reduce the symptoms.” Joseph stated, carefully sitting up and facing the upset mare. Nightmare Moon turned her head and looked at the floor. “Hey now,” Joseph started, “I’m fine alright? C’mon, let’s at least get up off of the hard floor and on to the couch.” Nightmare Moon nodded and got up before mopping over to the couch. A smile crossed his lips as he rolled his eyes, taking a seat on the couch next to her, “Alright grumpy, let’s start off with something a little mild.” --- Celestia’s afternoon light crept through the castle windows in beams, which Joseph freely passed through. Beside him, his dark partner in crime attempted to keep pace with him. He was on a mission of destruction and inconvenience. He was hungry. Since the oh-so wonderful Sun Princess put an abrupt and immediate end on him and his new pal going out and getting artery clogging food, he was going to find a way to make up for it. His plan mostly consisted of raiding the castle’s kitchen in hopes of finding something appetizing. Nightmare Moon still kept paced, slightly worried about their current destination. It didn’t help that she had suggested the idea in the first place. Though she usually carried a ‘to tartarus with it’ attitude about most things in and around the castle, this was one of the few occasions where she shied away from that mindset as they neared the kitchen. The previously spoken words of her human companion frequently made it’s way back into her thoughts. Maybe this was too soon of a stunt to be pulling, given Joseph’s recent interaction with the only pony that cared enough to not let something worse happen to them. “Joseph,” Nightmare Moon started, breaking the silence, “Maybe we should reconsider this adventure.” He turned to her with a smile before speaking, “Come on now, Nightmare Moon. You getting cold feet?” Nightmare Moon was pretty sure she didn’t have any ‘feet’, and was almost certain they weren’t cold, “It may not be wise to go breaking into the kitchen, given your most recent interaction with Celestia.” “Are you turning into the voice of reason on me?” Joseph asked, not losing his smile. “While I may not be considered a reasonable pony,” Nightmare Moon said, shocking herself with her own words, “Yes.” “What’s the worse that’s going to happen, she banishes us? Or makes it so we can’t be near each other?” He questioned, not losing his smile and air of happiness. Nightmare Moon on the other hand was becoming annoyed by her friend’s care free attitude, not realising the gravity of the situation, “Yes, actually.” she snapped. Joseph stopped in his tracks, turning towards the dark mare as his smile dissolved, “You don’t really think that she’d try that, do you?” Nightmare Moon sighed and deflated slightly, “I am unsure, but I would rather not push our luck.” “Well it won’t happen.” Joseph said, locking eyes with her, “I won’t let it.” Nightmare Moon lost herself in thought, her chest tightening in that weird way it did when he was around. But she sighed, turning her head slightly as thoughts of separation as punishment filled her head. “Hey…” He said, laying a hand on her shoulder, “I promise, I won’t let anything happen.” She couldn’t help but focus on his touch as her chest tightened again. Her negative thoughts leaving her mind as she looked back to him, locking her teal eyes with his, “Promise?” “Promise.”                                                         --- The sound of cabinets being thrown open haphazardly and the clinking of pots and pans being shuffled about filled the large kitchen. Nightmare Moon leaned against the large island in the middle of the room, idly chewing her lip. Her eyes flicked between Joseph and the two entrances to the kitchen, anxiety slowly building up inside her at the possibility of being caught ransacking the kitchen. “There’s nothing here.” Joseph huffed, standing up and catching his breath, examining the carnage he left in his wake. “Perhaps if you looked in the cooler instead of the cupboards, you may find what you’re looking for.” Nightmare Moon said slowly. Joseph deadpanned, “They don’t keep junk food in the fridge, Nightmare Moon.” Nightmare Moon was about at her wits end with her cryptic human friend. Most of the time she hadn’t a clue what he’d be talking about. It didn’t help when she asked him to elaborate, he would smile childishly and laugh. Though the more she thought of that, her annoyance and anger would melt away. A small sigh accompanied with a small smirk left the dark mare, “I suppose not.” Joseph left the now destroyed cabinets, to look into the large freezer. He was slightly shocked by the resemblance of the refrigerator to the ones back on Earth. It seemed weird to him to only have one for such a large kitchen. Though he rationalized, they probably didn’t make that many left overs worth keeping cool. Within lied what one would expect inside a refrigerator. Vegetables, dairy products, sauces, the usual. “This place sucks.” Joseph stated plainly, before closing the doors and reopening them in hopes of something better appearing. Caught off guard, Nightmare Moon seemingly choked on air as she chuckled, “Oh?” “Yeah, there’s not mini-microwave pizzas or hot pockets.” He started, his tone getting louder and more agitated, “And on top of that, there’s no internet!” “Internet?” Nightmare Moon asked, stoking the growing fire. “I mean, there’s pony internet. It sucks, it’s slow, and there’s no porn!” He exclaimed, “Well, I mean there’s pony porn, but it’s just not the same.” Joseph fell silence, wallowing in his own self misery as Nightmare Moon fought back the urge to burst out laughing. “Anyways…” Joseph said, regaining his composure. Nightmare Moon grinned as she watched him open the doors to the freezer again. Seemingly satisfied with not finding anything new after the third look through, he moved on. The silence was interrupted by the grumbling of Nightmare Moon’s stomach. He looked over with a smirk, “I can take a hint.” She simply scoffed and rolled her eyes. Pulling open the lower freezer drawer, Joseph became paralyzed. Metaphorically speaking, the golden light of a very large african-american man's soul shone upon him, mesmerizing him at the sight of something so beautiful. In reality, it was a drawer full of ice cream and cake. “Jackpot.” He breathlessly spoke, earning the curiosity of his fuzzy friend. Peering in, Nightmare Moon didn’t see the value of the contents within, “What is it?” “Ice cream.” Joseph said simply. “Ice cream?” She asked. “Are you saying you’ve never had ice cream?” He retorted, about to lose his collective shit. “No?” Nightmare Moon added, wincing slightly and bracing for impact. Joseph look mortified, “You poor, poor soul.” Snatching up a container of the frozen dairy product, he handed it to her, and gave her a rather large and oversized spoon. “Here, start with that, I’m going to make some milkshakes.” Joseph said, with a renewed vigor to help ease her pain and suffering. Silently she followed his orders, opening the container and digging the spoon into the hard, frozen treat. Carefully lifting the spoon with her magic, Nightmare Moon took a tentative bite, before being delighted by the taste of vanilla. “This has to be the food of gods. What a shame that, gluttonous, sun loving mare had kept it from me.” Nightmare Moon spoke, before shoveling as much of the cold treat into her mouth as she could. Joseph turned in time to see the disaster of a brain freeze happening. In an instant, the spoon and container dropped onto the counter, as Nightmare Moon collapsed. Her eyes were sealed shut, as her hooves attempted at relieving the pain by rubbing her temples. “Yeah...I should’ve warned you.” Joseph said empathetically. “Nay, but the swift retribution for my greed.” Nightmare Moon spoke in a strained voice. Joseph carefully set her freshly made milkshake before her on the floor. One of her eyes peeped open at the sound of clinking glass. “Is this another cursed treat?” She asked, slowly losing the edge of her brain freeze. “If you don’t try to drink it all at once, no.” Joseph replied, a smile working its way onto his face. Carefully he wrapped his arms around her shoulders and pulled her up to her hooves, “Come on, let’s get out of here before we get caught.” Slowly they trekked out the kitchen, Nightmare Moon taking her cold drink in her magical grasp while leaning against Joseph for support. Her brain freeze had long ago subsided, but she wouldn’t have told him otherwise.                                                 --- After a long trip of silent sips, the pony-human duo found themselves outside in the castle’s garden. The now empty glasses floated alongside them in Nightmare Moon’s grasp, as they waded through tall grass and flowers. Both seemingly content to enjoy each other's company while taking in the beauty of nature. Hours seemed to pass by as they slowly walked towards one of the few hills within the garden. The lump of earth jutted out from the mostly flat landscape, and atop it stood a lone oak tree. Wordlessly, they both traversed up the hill, seeking the refuge of the shade beneath the ancient tree. The shade caste from the tree by the late afternoon sun was cooling. Unceremoniously, Joseph flopped down at the base of the tree with a grunt, leaning against the trunk as he kicked off his shoes, enjoying the cool grass beneath him, "Man, I could use a nap." As if mimicking a dog, Nightmare Moon carefully pranced around in a circle, lying over the short grass before laying down next to her human companion, "I concur." She crossed her forelegs in front of her, as she shifted her weight to the side and leaned against Joseph’s side. His mind went blank as circuits began to fry, a small blush crossing his cheeks as his gaze passed over Nightmare Moon’s prone form. Moments passed as his blush darkened by their current position. Deciding to end any possible thoughts, he turned himself around before sliding down beside her. Nightmare Moon grinned while looking at him, “You’re odd, you know that?” Joseph chuckled and shrugged before laying back, his world now upside down. They had fallen into silence for only a moment before he spoke, “It’s beautiful, isn’t it.” “Quite.” She replied calmly, her eyes closed, though her head remained raised. “Nightmare Moon-” Joseph started, before being cut off almost immediately. “How I wish you’d call be something other than that” She spoke in a solemn tone. A little voice inside his head told him to not pursue the argument over her name, and seemingly settled on a better choice, “So what do you want me to call you?” Nightmare Moon blushed furiously and began sputtering, before Joseph continued on with his thought, “I wasn’t really good at nicknames. Usually they happened by circumstance. I don’t know. Honeybunny?” Her blush intensified, “Honeybunny? What sort of name is that?” “It was from a movie.” Joseph said nonchalantly, before returning to his thoughts, attempting to conjure up a decent nickname. Nightmare Moon was silent as she encouraged herself before speaking, “I-I’d like you to call me N-Nighty.” Joseph was pulled from his thoughts, “Hm? What’d you say?” “I-I said,” Nightmare Moon tried her hardest to steel her voice, “I’d like you to call me, Nighty.” “Nighty,” His lips curled up in a warm smile as he repeated her desired name, enjoying the way it sounded, “I can live with it. How about you, Nighty?” “Y-Yeah…” She trailed off, averting her eyes and turning slightly in an attempt to hide her blush. They fell into silence, as Joseph closed his eyes and returned to his thoughts. In his head, he continued to repeat her name. He didn’t know what, but it stirred something within him. Though he let it go, as his mind began to wander. “Hey Nightm-Nighty,” Joseph stuttered. Nightmare Moon hummed softly, turning back to him, her blush long gone, “Yes?” “Can I ask you a question?” He said. “Of course.” She replied, slightly raising an eyebrow. “You don’t have to answer, and I don’t mean to sound insensitive, but, like, it’s kind of difficult.” Joseph added. “Like I said, ask away.” She replied, taking note of his nervous demeanor. “Are you sure-” “Joseph, you’re testing my patience.” Nightmare Moon stated, earning a nervous chuckle and smile from him. “Okay, but promise you won’t get mad.” He slightly begged. “Joseph-” Nightmare Moon added sternly. “Okay, alright.” Joseph said, falling silent in a last ditch effort of reason, “What was it like on the moon?” Nightmare Moon’s breath caught in her throat as she froze. Her stomach turned as Joseph paled. “I mean, what did it look like?” He added in a small voice, like a kid in awe. She was silent for a moment, before responding in low tone much like his, “It was the most beautiful thing I’d ever witnessed in my life.” Joseph was quiet, his eyes closed as he tried to imagine what it’d be like. It was obviously a sore subject, but Nightmare Moon seemed to warm up to his child like innocence, recalling the breathtaking images that were forever in her memory. While it was a prison, she never assosiated such pain with her beloved moon. In his mind’s eye, he could see the magnificent lunar landscape, but it seemed to be nothing without her being there. Not that he enjoyed the thought of his four legged friend imprisoned on the thing she loved the most. But it seemed to be nothing without her, and vise versa. Nightmare Moon seemed to harness all of the beauty and wonder of the moon itself, he thought. She resembled it all, and he felt amazed, that she was lying there next to him in the cool grass. He had his own moon right at his fingertips. His eyes reopened as he looked at her. She as well lost in thought, hopefully not succumbing the the repressed memories of her imprisonment. It was then, when his own voice shocked him, “D-Do you think you could show me it one day?” Nightmare Moon’s eyes shimmered slightly at the question. His demeanor like a child, as he gazed up at the sky in wonder. Nightmare Moon was in shock of his reaction, seeing someone else react to her moon the way she did. “I promise, one day.” She spoke, earning a warm smile out of Joseph. They fell silent again, returning to their own rushing thoughts. A sigh and yawn left the human, his arms stretching out before he laid his right hand along his side, and draped his other one across Nightmare Moon’s forelegs, and over her shoulder. Nightmare Moon froze once again, as her eyes traced along his arm and back to him. His eyes were closed and a smile on his face. The muscles of her shoulder, twitched slightly, as the warm feeling of his fingers running through the fur of her shoulder. All thoughts had stopped, as she attempted to take in his touch. Her chest tightened again, as she focused on his delicate touch. Nightmare Moon found herself enjoying the sensation of his fingers on her dark coat, as a smile took over her shocked expression. An unexpected yawn left her, as she eyed his shoulder. It seemed only logical to do the same to him, as she gently laid her head down on his shoulder. She softly nuzzled into his shoulder, before letting her eyelids flutter shut. Nightmare Moon lay there, reveling in the peace of the moment and the touch of Joseph. His slow breathing filled her ears, as the warmth from his touch spread through her chest and through her cheeks. Though the silence didn’t last long before he slowly, and softly said, “Hey, Nighty, we need to return those glasses.” Nightmare Moon chuckled softly, picking up the glasses beside them and teleporting them away with a soft pop. Her mind returned to the sensations around her as she began to succumb to the comfort of sleep. Through her last bits of conscious thought, she found herself growing attached to her human friend, never wanting for this moment to end.                                                  --- “Your majesty, I haven’t a clue as to what has happened.” One of the many frantic chefs said to Celestia. The Sun Princess was silent in her thoughts, surveying the disaster zone of the kitchen. Cooks and waiters ran about frantically in an effort to fix and return everything to it’s designated spots. Several guards stood posted nearby, as a few looked through the kitchen for clues. “Everypony was out of here by the end of lunch.” He continued on, nearly wailing in pain at the sight of his kitchen. “Yes, yes, we’ll get to the bottom of this.” Celestia said idly, looking around the kitchen. Out of nowhere, a pop sounded in the room and a puff of dark smoke appeared, catching everyone’s attention. Before anyone could react, two glasses appeared midair, before falling to the floor and shattering into hundreds of pieces. The room had become so silent, that Celestia could hear each individual piece of glass go skittering around the tile floor. Before the silence, like the glass, was shattered by a cry from the chef, “Those were special crystal glasses!” The room erupted into chatter and chaos as the chef continued to cry, while the others went back to running around. Each guard in the room simultaneously began talking to the Sun Princess with solutions and ideas. Celestia resisted the urge to hit her head off of the counter-top as she sighed, “Well, that answers that question…”                                                 --- Joseph’s eyes opened to darkness. Celestia’s bright sun had long ago set, leaving Equestria in the pale blue light of the moon. His eyes slowly adjusted, revealing the inside of his chambers. Though he groggily attempted to recall his memories, he was certain this was not where he had fallen asleep. Sitting up, he stretch slightly, earning cracks and pops from various bones in his body. He was still in his clothes, he noted, laying on top of his large bed. Tiredly he looked around the room, until his eyes landed on two letters, resting on his nightstand. Lazily throwing over a hand, he grabbed the first letter before opening it. Joseph squinted his eyes and angled the paper into the light of the moon before reading.         Dear Joseph,         You were resting too soundly for me to wake you. I’ve returned you to your chambers to sleep in comfort.                                                                 Sweet dreams,                                                                         Nighty A smile crossed his lips as his heart seemed to flutter. His thoughts drifting to the Mare of the Moon, as he carefully reached over and grabbed the other letter before unfolded it.         Dear Joseph,                 I would appreciate you and Ms. Nightmare Moon not ransacking my kitchen. The kitchen staff are rightfully upset with how you treated their workspace. Also, you owe the kitchen staff two new crystal glasses for the ones you broke upon their return.         P.S. Had you touched the cake in the freezer, it would’ve been the end of you.                                                                         All the best,                                                                                 Celestia Joseph scoffed and chuckled lightly, before tossing the letters back to where they originally were. Gingerly he rolled out of bed and shuffled his way over to the french doors that led out to his balcony. Opening them, he was met with the cool air of the night as his gaze was cast up into the night sky. Slowly he made his way to the railing, before leaning against it while being memorized by the sky. He’d always liked the night sky back on Earth, but here it seemed better. Each night was a new experience looking up, but now it seemed even more so. It had changed, it was no longer just the night sky, but it was her, in all of her beauty. Joseph smiled again, gazing upon the bright full moon. It seemed larger than ever, taking up a good portion of the night sky, unlike back on Earth. He felt, more than he thought, that she had been waiting for him to emerge and look up. Like she was beside him, looking up with him.                                                 *        *        *                 > Chapter 6 > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- The sun was warm as it shone down upon Joseph, casually lounging about on a piece of furniture on his room’s balcony. He laid with a set of sunglasses on the bridge of his nose, and his hands interlaced behind his head. Despite the breathtaking view and the shades he wore, his eyes were closed as his mind wandered freely. The serenity of the environment was nearly enough to make Joseph fall asleep, which would surely lead to disaster. A surprising amount was used as Joseph concentrated on letting his mind wander freely. Though, it would always come full circle, switching to mental imagery of a familiar black villain. A sigh escaped his lips as he cracked open his eyes. In his hands, was the letter she had wrote for him a few nights ago. Nothing life changing was held within its paper confines, and would’ve normally been discarded without much thought. Except when looking at the letter, a smile would continuously cross his lips as his thoughts turned to her once again. Subconsciously he unfolded the quaint note as his eyes ran over it. “Sweet dreams, Nighty” her voice echoed in his head. While he couldn’t recall any recent dreams, he found himself constantly awaking every morning with thoughts of his four-legged counterpart. Joseph laid back against the sunbed with a sigh, all he could think about was her. What was the matter with him? Why was he so infatuated with her, considering she was outright rude and inflicted bodily harm upon him. Joseph couldn’t recall feeling this way about anything, or anyone for that matter since coming to Equestria, let alone back on Earth. A soft chuckle escaped him as he recounted his time spent with the pony villain. Risking severe injury, just to say sorry for starting off on the wrong foot. The stuff I do… Joseph sighed quietly he continued to think to himself. That night was the last time he saw her, due to both of them being ‘employed’ by the Princess of the Sun herself. Though it was a stretch to call menial tasks a form of a job, Celestia had her rules about containing persons of interest under her roof. Over the soft din of music playing in the room, the sound of soft hoof-taps reached his ears. The door gently opened, followed by delicate metal hoofsteps on the marble floor of his room. Turning slightly, Joseph squinted hard to see into his dark bed chambers. “Joseph?” An angelic voice called out. “Out here, Nighty” He replied, a soft smile gracing his lips as he continued to look into the room. Angelic? Where’d that come from? Joseph’s gaze returned to the breathtaking view before him, as the hoofsteps came to rest near his side. Slowly his scanned back over to see nothing but empty air. Confusion crossed his face as he peered back into the room through squinted eyes. His eyesight adjusted slightly, showing the tall, lingering shadow of the dark alicorn. “I’m pretty sure you’re not a vampire,” He started with a smile, “So I don’t think sunlight is going to kill you.” A huff escaped the villains lips, before she tentatively waved a black regalia-clad hoof out into the sunlight. Almost immediately, a loud hiss emanates from the mare as she quickly retracts back into the shadows. Joseph chuckled and shook his head. He noted the looks of a toothy grin upon the features of the dark mare, as she slowly left the safety of the dim room. “Hello Nighty.” He said with a smile, his eyes locking with hers. Nightmare Moon’s grin widened as her serpent pupils constricted in the bright light, “Good-day, Joseph.” She stopped just to the right of the plastic sunbed Joseph laid upon. Delicately she sat back on her haunches, her eyes moving out over the mountain side before them. Without much thought or control, Joseph’s hand mused the longer tuft of fur on her chest. His fingers danced along her dark coat, drawing circles and random patterns. His one handed ministrations elicited soft gasps and groans of appreciation, that had seemingly fallen on Joseph’s deaf ears. Turning to the mare, any train of thought came to a screeching halt as a smile crossed his features. Nightmare Moon had all but turned into pony villain putty in his hand. Her large, serpent like eyes were unfocused and staring off into the distance, while her bottom lip was clasped between her teeth. A slight tinge of red crossed her cheeks, as his eyes scanned her, he could’ve sworn he saw a hind leg softly tapping the ground. The sight of the villain was enough to earn giggles from the human, which almost immediately sobered up the mare and pulled her back to reality. Pupils dilated slightly, before serpent eyes with a gaze of a flaming daggers met Joseph’s eyes. A raging inferno of red crossed her face, as her muzzle scrunched up in a pout. Retaliation was quick, as a large black wing swatted the now guffawing human. Nightmare Moon had turned away and began pouting as Joseph’s fit of laughter began to die down. “See, the sunlight isn’t so bad.” Joseph commented, trying to cheer up his villain and control any further outbursts of laughter. Nightmare Moon “hmmphed” and turned away farther, refusing to meet his gaze as she turned her nose up. “Aww, Nighty. I didn’t mean it,” He tried to reason in the most sincere tone her could, “But you just looked so cute.” The Queen of the Night visibly tensed, but held fast on her facade against the human, who was almost blown away at the words that left his mouth. Joseph had turned to Nightmare Moon, and was rendered speechless at her current state. “Alright..” He said, standing quickly and wrapping his arms around the mare much to her surprise. Joseph had managed to swing himself around her shoulder in a half hug, the momentum pulling Nightmare Moon to her hooves and towards the door to the room. “C’mon, I’ll make it up to you inside, I don’t want to burn out here.” Joseph added. Nightmare Moon remained silent, though her blush didn’t fade much. While she did her best to pout and be stubborn at her human’s expense, she couldn’t deny the enjoyment of grasp upon her. Where was this coming from? Why do I enjoy his touch so much? In a flash her thoughts were running wild, as she attempted to reason the whole situation and her appreciation of such closeness to her friend. It wasn’t until she realized she was leaning into his grasp, that she was pulled back to reality. Their walk together was short, as Joseph had pointed them towards the couch in his study. Nightmare Moon did her best to play off any emotions and hide her blush. Joseph sat down on the couch while Nightmare Moon closely curled up next to him. While very improper for a mare of her stature to be seated as such would’ve been normally frowned upon, and previous learned manners were shoved to the side as she leaned against Joseph. “Are we better now?” Joseph asked with a grin, looking up at the mare next to him. “I suppose.” Nightmare Moon replied in a defeated tone, that was contradicted by the smile growing on her lips. Before Nightmare Moon could pursue any guilt tripping conversations, the sight of the all but destroyed study finally registered to her. Books had been made into a makeshift stand, for a large, black rectangular object. “This is new.” She spoke, “Some kind of modern art?” Joseph chuckled, but was cut off as she continued on, “I don’t exactly get it. Though, it seems like anything is passed for art now. Back in may day-” Joseph could only stifle his laughter. “-Art made sense. Proper paintings, murals and portraits and such. But alas, how the times have changed.” Joseph managed to contain himself, which was met with a questioning expression from the mare looking down on him, “It’s a TV, Nighty.” Her expression didn’t change as he momentarily hummed in thought, “So, imagine it shows plays and pictures on it, I guess.” Nightmare Moon scoffed, “Preposterous. It is all but black, how can it show anything. It looks as though only a few tomes could fit inside of it, though it can show whole plays and pictures?” Leaning over, Joseph scooped up the remote before hitting the power button. The screen flashed, followed by “dancing ants” and the sound of static. Slowly the images of a pony news channel came to, only to fade out again, the static cut by distorted voices. Having already had enough of the unpleasant noise, Joseph quickly shut it back off. Nightmare Moon was in a state of awe as she looked down at the human, “Are you god? Do you possess magic?” “Nope, just the wonderful powers of technology.” Joseph said with a laugh. “How incredible. You all but made something from nothing.” She added, turning her attention back to the black rectangle. “Eh, this stuff survived the jump from Earth. It doesn’t exactly mesh well with pony technology.” Joseph spoke. In which Nightmare Moon immediately followed up with, “Show me a play.” “They’re called movies, and it’s about the only thing that works.” Joseph retorted. “So be it!” She giddily commanded. “I guess…” Joseph sighed, but remained seated next to the villain. Nightmare Moon widened and shimmered slightly as they met Joseph’s, “You said you would make it up to me..” Joseph suddenly stood, surprising the dark mare, “Alright then honey-bunny, if you want to watch a movie, we need to acquire snacks.” A blush returned to Nightmare Moon’s dark cheeks as she slowly stood and stretched like a cat, “Does this mean raiding the kitchen again?” “That it does, Nighty,” Joseph smiled widely, “That it does.” By some miracle, Nightmare Moon and Joseph had managed to slip into the kitchen went unnoticed. More surprisingly was the kitchen being devoid of anypony, save for the two intruders. “I guess they’re out on break, or something.” Joseph commented, quietly entering the kitchen with Nightmare Moon in tow. “Convenient.” Nightmare Moon softly hummed. Silence settled over the kitchen as Joseph began to rummage through the cabinets and pantry as quietly as he could. Nightmare Moon chose to stand and watched the human with a quirked eyebrow. After a few more minutes of silence, Nightmare Moon cleared her throat and spoke, “May I ask what it is we’re trying to find?” “Popcorn.” Joseph retorted, moving from cabinet to cabinet with no success. “Popped corn? As in corn on the cob?” Nightmare Moon asked, obvious confusion in her voice, “Leave it to ponies to consider that a ‘snack’.” Chuckles emanated from the cabinet Joseph was buried in, before he exited and stood to face her, “It’s not exactly like that. It’s just the kernels, you heat them up and they pop, then you put butter and salt on them.” “Interesting.” She replied, attempting to envision the process. “I could be lying, I don’t know how it’s made.” Joseph said with a smirk, before returning to rooting around the cabinet before him. Nightmare Moon scoffed and rolled her eyes before occupying herself with glassware on the island in the center of the kitchen. Held in her magical grasp, Nightmare Moon inspected a decorative glass, engraved with fancy designs of flowers. Joseph continued on his quest, opening up the next cabinet when hell all but broke loose. As soon as the cabinet door was moved, pots, pans and glassware came cascading out in an avalanche. The cacophony of banging metal and shattering glass echoed throughout the kitchen. “Eep~” Nightmare Moon squeaked, startled by the sudden sound. The decorative glass piece in her grasp met the same fate as she lost concentration, smashing upon the marble counter top. “Son of a bitch.” Joseph muttered, standing calf-deep in broken glass and cookware. Nightmare Moon sighed, “Shit.” Joseph’s eyes widened in surprise as he turned to look at his pony counterpart. Before another thought could occur the kitchen door flung open as two royal guards burst in. “Halt!” Identical guard on the right yelled. “It’s the fuzz, Nighty, cheese it!” Joseph yelled as he dove over the island. Nightmare Moon hissed loudly and reared back as she charged her horn for teleportation. Her blue aura encasing Joseph mid-air as it encased him, as is spread over her own body. “Oh no you don’t.” Called the regal voice of Celestia, whose golden magic interrupted Nightmare Moon’s spell. Joseph let out a shriek the blue aura around him dissipated. Little effort was used as Celestia caught him in her own aura, before righting him next to Nightmare Moon. “Trespassing and destroying my kitchen?” Celestia commented calmly, her eyes surveying the damage and the two delinquents before her, “Sounds all too familiar now doesn’t it?” “Celestia, it was an accident.” Joseph retorted, doing his best to sound regretful. “Oh was it?” Celestia asked, her voice changing in pitch as a smile crossed her lips, “You’re telling me you aren’t ransacking my kitchen?” “Nighty wanted to watch a movie,” He spoke, “So we came to get refreshments.” Celestia noted the pet name as she replied, “A movie you say? Twilight had mentioned that you had some in your possession.” Nightmare Moon began inwardly groaning as The Princess of the Sun continued, “You do know kitchen staff can assist you on your endeavors, right?” “Well where’s the fun in that?” Joseph asked, losing his regretful tone. Celestia hummed softly, “Regardless, you’ve once again destroyed glassware belonging to my staff. What do you suppose we do to rectify this?” “Uhhh…” Joseph trailed off. “How about an invite to tonight's movie night, along with Luna, Twilight, and maybe Cadence and Shining Armor.” Celestia said. “Can we piece everything back together by hoof, while using gum to hold it together?” Nightmare Moon spoke up in a sarcastic tone. “Let me think.” Celestia paused for a moment, “Negatory.” “Fine, I’ll accept the deal.” Joseph sighed, as Celestia’s smile widened. Nightmare Moon growled, sounding like the mix of a zombie and someone drowning. “Splendid. Say, six o’clock?” The Sun Princess asked. “I suppose.” He replied. Without another word, all of the pots and pans were engulfed in Celestia’s golden aura and placed back into the cabinets. The glass that was once shattered was reformed, and returned to their designated spots. The ease in which everything was fixed up in did not go unnoticed by the Human-pony duo, who visibly deflated at the sight. “What was it that you were looking for again?” Celestia asked. “Popcorn.” Joseph plainly replied. Celestia maintained eye contact as the cabinet closest to them on the island opened up, as a box floated out. Nightmare Moon and Joseph both groaned, as the human all but collapsed against the villain. Hearty chuckles left the solar monarch as she turned to leave the kitchen. “See you then.” Celestia called out in a sing-song voice amidst her chuckles. Joseph found himself on the couch in his study, leaning against his equine counterpart, who was casually flipping through a magazine in her magical grasp. Nightmare Moon laid upon her side, while Joseph propped up her upper body. Lazily his head rested against her neck, as he attempted to occupy himself in his own magazine. It was hard to concentrate while being in a mildly intimate position. The heat of her body, the soft breaths that she took along with her steady heartbeat derailed train of thought Joseph had. He couldn’t lie, he enjoyed his current position. Nightmare Moon on the other had found herself boiling under the surface with rage. Of course she’d want to come and ruin my time with him. Leave it to Celestia, trying to butt herself into everything… Though try as she might, she simply couldn’t distract herself with the magazine. The only thing keeping her from going into a nuclear meltdown was the calmness of her human. Nightmare Moon couldn’t help the smirk that worked its way onto her lips at the thought of him. The way he fidgeted attempting to get comfortable, his head resting against her neck. Besides their plans being interrupted, Nightmare Moon was in near bliss. A soft sigh left the human as he set his magazine down on his chest. His eyes wandered over everything, double checking a mental list for the night's activities. Before him on the coffee table were snacks and refreshments of all sorts. Several chairs, a smaller couch, and an extremely large bean bag-like mat was acquired. Oddly enough, Joseph found himself marveling at the item, wondering if it was a pony-size equivalent or just another unique piece of Equestrian furniture. His gaze flicked over to the clock, five-fifty. Another sigh left him as her turned and stood from the couch. Slowly he began rearranging the study as Nightmare Moon’s eyes followed him. The couches were butted together forming a slight ‘V’, with a chair on each on. Joseph dragged over the bean bag chair in front of the couch on the left, before moving the table over for easy snack access. Taking a final look around, her prepped the television along with the movie, before unceremoniously collapsing onto the bean bag chair. He laid limp as Nightmare Moon chuckled, lowering her head to rest upon his shoulder. Joseph turned towards the dark pony, “You know you can come down here. It’s pretty comfy.” Nightmare Moon grunted softly, her eyes closing as she nuzzled into his shoulder slightly. She was content in not uttering another word, enjoying the peacefulness of their shared silence. Her ears swiveled slightly, listening to Joseph breathing softly as he laid gazing at a painting on the wall. The serenity was short lived, as knocking on the chamber doors shattered the silence. Neither of them flinched as the door opened, as several chatting ponies made their way in. “We’re here for movie night!” Luna exclaimed excitedly, looking around the room for the hosts. Joseph smiled while looking at Nightmare Moon, before patting her on the neck and sitting up, “Over here.” “Huzzah!” Luna called out again, leaping onto the couch next to Nightmare Moon. The lunar villain smiled, “Good day, Luna.” “Good day to you too, Ms. Moon.” Luna replied with a matching smile, getting herself comfortable on the couch. Joseph stood, greeting Celestia, Twilight, Cadence, and Shining Armor. Nightmare Moon moved herself down to the bean bag chair, lying on her side and leaning back against the couch. Twilight sat properly next to Luna, the two cuddling up on the couch together. Cadence and Shining Armor did the same on the neighboring couch, as Celestia happily took the recliner. “Make yourselves comfortable, indulge in the refreshments, blah-blah-blah.” Joseph said, securing the lights and blinds over the windows. “What movie are we watching?” Cadence delicately asked, already reaching for a bag of chips. “A movie from my planet, one that I hold near and dear to my heart.” Joseph said, “Pulp Fiction.” The room came to life as everyone hummed in thought, and envisioned what a human movie could hold. “I’ve been allotted five questions for tonight,” Twilight started, earning giggles from everyone save Nightmare Moon, “What is the film about?” “And I quote,” Joseph started, “Vincent Vega and Jules Winnfield are hit men with a penchant for philosophical discussions. In this ultra-hip, multi-strand crime movie, their story line is interwoven with those of their boss, gangster Marsellus Wallace; his actress wife, Mia; struggling boxer Butch Coolidge; master fixer Winston Wolfe and a nervous pair of armed robbers, ‘Pumpkin’ and ‘Honey Bunny’.” Everyone paused for a moment, visualizing the plot of the movie, before Joseph quickly followed up with, “I.e. gratuitous violence, drugs, sex, foul language and guns.” Luna, Nightmare Moon, and Shining Armor audibly cooed at the new definition as Joseph back around to everyone. Quickly snatching up the remote, he grabbed a drink before flopping down on the bean bag chair with Nightmare Moon. He reclined against her side, subconsciously wrapping an arm around her shoulder. The sounds of the movie had drowned out Nightmare Moon’s gasp, and in the dim light her blush was concealed. She was drawn away from her inner thoughts as Joseph stole the bowl of popcorn from her with a smirk. Nightmare Moon sighed happily, leaning back into the couch as she was drawn into the movie. Enjoying the feeling of her human counterpart by her side. “That was…” Shining started. Before his wife all but screamed, “-Amazing!” “The best part had to have been the diner scene.” Cadence continued. Luna sat up and puffing out her chest slightly, “I thought the overdose scene was quite entertaining.” “None of that made any sense.” Twilight spoke in disbelief, “Why wouldn’t they just make the movie in chronological order?” “I found when Butch and Marcellus clashed was the best part.” Celestia added to the conversation, which earned surprised glances from everyone. Nightmare Moon grinned widely, “I liked when Marvin got shot in the face.” Shining was beginning to look a little green around the gills, “It was a bit-graphic” he spoke, attempting to control his turning stomach. “What’s the matter pony-boy?” Joseph asked with a wide smile, “Can’t handle a little blood? Or was it the basement scene in the pawn shop?” His eyes fluttered as he went limp against the couch, eliciting a sigh from Cadence, “Party pooper.” “Well it’s gonna be great to see him when we watch Full Metal Jacket.” Joseph commented, turning his attention back to Twilight, who was still in a state of awe. “Yes, well, it is now considerably later.” Celestia said, standing and stretching, “But I must retire to my chambers. Thank you for the invite, Joseph, we all have to get together for another movie night soon.” Realizing the room was darker than it was before, Joseph cast his gaze towards the clock, which read nine o'clock. A chorus of ‘good-nights’ emanated from the study as Celestia vanished in a bright flash of magic. “As much as I’d love to stay and watch another movie, I’ve got to get sleeping beauty back before he yaks everywhere.” Cadence spoke, gesturing to a now snoring Shining Armor. “As well as us.” Luna stood and stretched, carefully guiding Twilight with her who was still trying to wrap her head around the movie, “Thank you for the invite. Please, let us have another movie night again soon.” “That can be arranged.” Nightmare Moon spoke, cutting off Joseph with a smile. The room fell silent as the two couples hoofsteps grew distant. Joseph sighed, leaning back against Nightmare Moon. “So did you enjoy the movie?” He asked, looking over at the still smiling Nightmare Moon. “Of course.” Nightmare moon replied, “Anytime I’m with you it’s enjoyable.” Joseph’s heart did a flip in his chest as he was rendered speechless. His shocked gaze met Nightmare Moon's eyes. The slits of her cat eyes were now dilated as they reflected the room. This was the most he’d seen her smile, and her gaze showed pure joy and something else he couldn’t place. Nightmare Moon began to stand, leaving Joseph on the floor. She carefully stretched, before circling in front of him. “Joseph, there’s-” Nightmare Moon paused, her gaze averting as she fell silent, searching her thoughts, “If it’s not too late for you…” She trailed off. The human smiled, but noted her apprehension, “It’s only nine, the night’s still young.” Nightmare Moon smiled, and blushed slightly, “Do you mind if-if I show you something?” “Sure, Nighty.” Joseph replied softly, the lunar alicorn’s cheeks flushing again. Seemingly revived with new energy, a smile grew on her lips, “We’re teleporting, hold your breath!” Before Joseph could react, the world went white. When the world came to, Joseph found himself lying on his back on the cold marble floor of the castle. The last minute suggestion had helped immensely with teleporting, Joseph no longer feeling like he was going to die after such an occurrence. “Are you alive?” Nightmare Moon spoke, laughter echoing from her. Joseph smiled and chuckled, “A little more of a warning next time, huh?” Nightmare Moon nodded as Joseph stood. Wordlessly she moved over to the corner of the room. Joseph followed behind her, softly walking across her bed chambers. He couldn’t remember ever being in here, but it was amazing. The walls were a mixed color of dark blue and purple. Paintings of planets, and galaxies and night skies covered the walls. Statues held priceless battle armor, weaponry, priceless porcelain and artifacts. The furniture, tapestries, and rugs looked ancient, likely being as old as the castle. A massive four post bed with large, maroon curtains sat against the far wall, set up much like his room. The room was extremely decorative, fancy trims and etched designs were put into the marble throughout the room. Upon the ceiling, was the most breathtaking portrait of the night sky. It took effort to tear his gaze away from such an amazing sight. Near the balcony doors, sat a telescope, along with a desk that was covered in sketches of constellations and the sky. Soft giggles met Joseph’s ears, “Over here.” Nightmare Moon spoke. Carefully he made his way over to the dark alicorn. She stood before a large glass case that held magnificent royal regalia. A tiara, necklace, and horseshoes much akin to Celestia’s were held inside. They were different though, a light cobalt blue, precise swirls and decorative marks adorned the pieces of metal, expensive gems were placed identically to Celestia’s. Though, instead of marks of the sun, there were crescent moons that matched Nightmare Moon’s cutie mark. “Upon my return, I was given these.” Nightmare Moon started, “Ideally they were supposed to be a goal, a gift, for when I was declared good, not evil. A year into my rehabilitation, and no progress was made.” She paused and took a breath, “For the longest time, I viewed this as a cruel joke. My salvation lying mere yards from where I slept. Literally the last thing I saw before sleep, and the first thing I saw when I awoke the next morning. I found myself content, wallowing in my own self misery.” “That was, until you came along.” Nightmare Moon added, locking her eyes with his, “Like anypony that got close, I pushed you away. Yet, by some miracle, you kept coming back. Slowly, we grew closer, and going to bed and waking up became much easier at the thought of being able to spend days with you.” “I used to dig myself into a hole, thinking about never being reformed, and never wearing the ‘pure’ regalia. I don’t haunt myself with those thoughts anymore, I’ve discarded the thought of being that Nightmare Moon in which everypony envisions. For all I care, that metal-ware can be discarded in the lava pits of tartarus. The only thing I care about, and what they envision me as, is you, Joseph. As long as you’re around, nothing else matters. Not Celestia, the guards, nobles, nothing. Everypony else, can join the regalia in the lava pit for all I care.” Nightmare Moon sighed aloud, her eyes shimmering slightly. The defiance and emotion in her voice had soaked into Joseph’s thoughts. It was like the weight of the world had finally been lifted off of her shoulders. She talked like a new mare, new life seemingly breathed into her. She only cares about me...Nothing else… “Nighty, I’ve been lost on my journey through life in Equestria. I thought I was truly alone on an alien planet, up until you came into my life. I’d be lost if you weren’t here to be my partner in crime.” Joseph said, his eyes meeting her’s once more. Her pupils were the largest he’d ever seen, not even close to resembling her serpent like eyes before. They shimmered in the pale moonlight, as he saw what looked to be tears slowly trailing their way down her cheeks. “Nighty, I-” Joseph’s world went white. All brain function had ceased, his heart stopped, frozen in time. Air was caught in his lungs, every muscle in his body tensed. Every hair on his body stood on end as his heart, ever so slowly began beating again. Though it felt like it was doing somersaults as he regained control over his body and senses. It was then, as the world came around him came back into focus, that he felt the warmth, and gentle touch of lips upon his own. His eyes refocused before him. Nightmare Moon leaning in, her lips dancing delicately against his. Joseph’s mind kicked into overdrive, as he carefully returned the dance in earnest. In an instant, it was over. Nightmare Moon pulled back as Joseph’s eyes opened, a look of awe plastered across his face. A goofy smile spread across Nightmare Moon’s face, as a deep red blush spread across her cheeks. Her eyes fluttered open, locking with his in a half lidded gaze. “I don’t know why, but every time you’re around, my heart feel funny.” Nightmare Moon said, placing a hoof over her chest, “I want you to be mine, and nothing more.” Joseph affectionately took her hoof, holding it in the grasp of his hands, “Nightmare Moon, sweety, that’s probably a heart attack.” Nightmare Moon scoffed loudly as she leveled a deadly glare upon her now claimed human, “I’ll show you a heart attack.” It was said that anypony up at that time heard screams echo throughout the castle. A large search was conducted throughout the premises, but a source was never found. > Chapter 7 > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- “Dear, are you okay?” Nightmare Moon asked in an innocent tone, a stark contrast to her fiery, half-lidded gaze. A toothy, lustful smile spread across her features, showing her razor sharp fangs. Joseph was blissfully unaware, lost in his own devices. Nightmare Moon’s swayed seductively as she stalked towards her dazed prey, her stance low, like a black panther ready to pounce. In the blink of an eye, she covered the distance to her human, rising to eye level. Nightmare Moon’s warm breath washed over Joseph’s face, pulling him back to reality. His eyes refocused on the mare before him as she slowly sauntered around him. The Lunar Villain was without her ancient, royal battle armor, leaving her nude before her human. Nightmare Moon relished in the feeling of her dark fur upon her human, as she tightly circled him. Joseph remained frozen, regaining control of his eyes and partly over his mind. Nightmare Moon’s slitted eyes were now dilated widely, flicking across his form, seemingly sizing him up before indulging herself. Her body coiled around the human, constricting affectionately. A wing wrapped around his side, as her head came to rest on his shoulder. Her galaxy and star infested mane fell over him as Nightmare Moon gently blew air across his neck. “Let me help you with that.” Nightmare Moon commented breathily, a black hoof rose gently, applying pressure against his jaw, shutting his agape mouth. After a moment, Joseph’s peered at her sideways, a shit eating grin spreading across her lips, “First time having a mare undress in front of you?” An eternity past before Joseph found his voice with a grint, “More like strip.” Hearty giggles escaped from The Lunar Alicorn as she detached from him and slinked away. Nightmare Moon casted a sultry look over her shoulder, her tail wafting back and forth. She bit her lip suggestively as her smouldering gaze met his. “Are you coming, dear?” Nightmare Moon asked, her voice infiltrating Joseph’s short circuiting mind. Joseph sighed, before breathlessly speaking, “Good god, you’re beautiful.” He thanked every deity he could think of as his legs thoughtlessly followed his mare. Following their confessions, Nightmare Moon had grown incredibly flirtatious and suggestive. Every chance she got, she teased and pushed Joseph to the brink of delightful insanity with her antics. It took no time for him to become wrapped tightly around her hoof. Though Joseph didn’t care, he wholeheartedly welcomed her attention and returning it in earnest. They had grown extremely close over the days and weeks that followed. While hidden from the eye of the sun, they were inseparable, spending most waking moments together. Nightmare Moon had topped her level of teasing, by removing her cobalt regalia, and exposing her bare form to her human putty. Joseph had all but melted, fawning over her beauty and falling deeper into her pit of seduction. She drew him further and further into her spider web of love. Joseph found the act incredibly intimate and absolutely breathtaking, seeing her in her pure form. His vocabulary failed him in attempts to express how attractive the dark mare was. He felt content, like he had finally broken through and saw the true Nightmare Moon. “Got you in a stranglehold, baby! That night I crushed your face!” Immediately the shredding guitar riff took place of the lyrics. An incredible display of skill was shown as the lead guitar and drums played an incredible duet. Both providing fills as the song came to an end. “By the gods, humans create wonderful music.” Nightmare Moon commented from her comfortable position. Joseph chuckled as he laid on the couch in a cocoon of mare and feathers. He was pinned to the couch by her body, as her large, powerful wings wrapped around him, holding him tightly. The human gazed affectionately upon his moon, as she comfortably rested upon his chest. Nightmare Moon sighed appreciatively, a soft smile gracing her lips as she was held in his arms. One hand gently traveled between her flushed cheek and being her ear. The other, bravely ventured down between her shoulder blades. Their beating hearts seemed to intertwine into one shared beat, as they lay together. A comfortable silence was shared between them, while enjoying each other’s company. A musical jingle, followed by the sound of a rapidly burning flame emanated from somewhere in the room. The tell tale sign of a letter being magically sent into the room. “Hey beautiful, I’ve gotta get up.” Joseph stated, attempting to wiggle free from her grasp. A low growl escaped from the mare encircling him, teeth were bared as a deadly gaze was cast upwards. Joseph smiled slightly as he chuckled in the face of death, settling back down and returning his hands to their previous spots, calming his mare. Nightmare Moon cooed softly, her smile returning as she nuzzled his chest. “Can you play my favorite song?” Nightmare Moon asked softly, her large teal eyes looking up at him. “Yes, dear.” Joseph responded with a smile, scanning over the touch screen of his phone before selecting a song. An orchestra came to life through the speakers, brass and string instruments pairing together in harmony, along with a piano in a melody that seemingly faded in and out. The voices of a choir joined in, raising in pitch before being drowned out by the heavy beat of a double bass drum. A heavy riff from a guitar joined as the melody played over and over again. Seemingly satisfied with her request, Joseph watched as her horn charged with magic, followed by the scroll floating over in front of his face. Her magic carefully unrolled it, and held the scroll before him as he scanned across it. Dear Joseph; Your presence is being requested in the throne room. Sincerely, Celestia. A long sigh came from the human as his head fell back limply, before lying still. “You have to go don’t you…” Nightmare Moon said softly, nuzzling up under his chin and squeezing him. “Sadly, beautiful.” Joseph replied, his arms still around her. Nightmare Moon sighed, before sitting up before her human, leveling her eyes with his, “Be quick, I don’t want you with the sun too long.” Joseph smiled widely, “Yes dear.” She leaned forward and locked lips with him, freezing him up. Before he could properly indulge, Nightmare Moon pulled back with a sly smile, “Go, before I change my mind and cuddle with you until the end of time.” He nodded dutifully, before standing and heading towards the door. His gaze looking over his shoulder, resisting the urge to return to her. The journey to the throne room was rehearsed and uneventful, passing the same guards, the same paintings, and the same castle staff. Coming out of his thoughts, Joseph found himself entering the throne room, and as if on autopilot, quickly approaching Celestia’s large, golden throne. “Good-day, Joseph.” The Sun Princess said kindly, accompanied by her trademark warm smile, as the human came to rest a short distance from her. “Hey, Celestia.” He responded casually, standing straight before her with his hands interlocked. “How have you been?” She asked, repositioning into a less formal posture. Joseph inwardly groaned, here’s another life update with Celestia… Nightmare Moon was less than pleased. Not only for the fact that her time with her human was interrupted, but what was thought to be a quick trip had morphed into nearly an hour of away time. Glaring at the clock solved nothing, and only fuel the fires of rage that were growing out of the incipient stage, and fastly approaching free burning. Leave it to Celestia… She knew that her human wouldn’t be free anytime soon, and the only way to remedy the situation was to simply go and retrieve him herself. An agitated growl left The Lunar Villain as she stood and stretched slowly. She huffed slightly as she made her way to the pile of her discarded regalia, carefully donning it. With her efforts to look presentable complete, she begrudgingly set her plan in motion. Her eyes closed in a rehearsed fashion as her horn glowed with magic. The musical jingle of magic danced around her as an orb of blue energy encompassed her. A blinding flash followed by a soft pop had signified that her teleportation had been completed, reopening her eyes to find herself in one of the many corridors in the castle. Observing her surroundings, found her to be just outside of the throne room. Affixing a glare that could wither all of the flora in Equestria, Nightmare Moon felt confident as she trudged towards her objective. Castle staff and guards alike did their best to conceal their fear as Nightmare Moon passed by, her gaze set dead ahead. Eventually the throne room doors came into view, as the dark alicorn rehearsed her plan. She’d simply walk in, secure her human, and leave, that simple. As closed in on the throne room, she could hear their muffled talking within. Nightmare Moon paused, and huffed at the inability to clearly hear their conversation. Curiosity got the better of her, as she gently opened the door. Peering in, she could see Joseph, his back turned to her. Celestia was obscured by a massive pillar, which also helped to conceal her position. Reflexively her ears swiveled forward, honing in on the conversation. “How is Ms. Nightmare Moon?” Celestia’s distant voice asked, earning a quiet scoff and roll of the eyes from the mare in question. Why does she care? “She’s doing good.” Joseph replied simply, rocking back and forth on his feet, an obvious sign of his growing impatience, Nightmare Moon noted. Good. Don’t release information to the enemy. “What’s the progress on you aiding her reformation?” The Sun Princess added, stopping Nightmare Moon mid thought, as she quickly attempted to recall what Celestia just said. What? What does that mean? “I’d say significant progress has been made, each day she seems better and better. I feel as though I’ve finally gotten through to her.” Joseph said vaguely. She was rendered dumbstruck. What does Celestia mean by aiding in her reformation? As far as Nightmare Moon knew, she was all but abandoned in the process of reformation. But Joseph helping reform her, and Celestia for that matter? How’d Joseph play into all of this? Surely he isn’t helping her, is he? “I must say, I had my doubts about letting you assist in Nightmare Moon’s reforming program, considering our previous run in’s with her. But I do have to say that it seems to have worked out for the better.” Celestia commented proudly, drawing a smile from the human and further confusing Nightmare Moon. Surely she was overreacting and taking the conversation out of context, though her caustic thoughts said otherwise. Assisting Celestia in my reformation? Surely he wasn’t working for her, r-right? That’s preposterous, he’s m-my human, not her’s. He wouldn’t-nay couldn’t be, he’s not like them, h-he’s different… Nightmare Moon found herself breathless, her heart twisting into a knot of despair as she sunk lower and lower in her rampant thoughts. Her mind painted heart wrenching and unsavory images of Joseph and Celestia secretly together, undermining her. N-No. He can’t. I-I let him in, he reciprocated his feelings! He was truthful...could he be lying to me? Betraying me… Outside of her mind, their conversation continued, echoing out of the throne room. Further instilling doubt and fear inside Nightmare Moon. Tears slowly accumulated in her eyes before slowly trailing down her black cheeks. This can’t be! How could I fall for her ways! How could I be so naive? H-How could I lov-... Nightmare Moon shook her head in an attempt to rid her mind of her thoughts. Tears continued to fall as soft sobs wracked her body. H-How could this happen? Why? I thought he was different...H-He… She was pulled from her malicious thoughts by the sound of approaching footsteps. Tear filled eyes gazed up, meeting the look of a smiling human. Instantly his face fell, worry washing over his features as he spotted the tears falling down her cheeks. “Whoa, Nighty, what’s wrong?” Joseph asked worriedly, his hands cupping her cheeks and pulling her gaze towards his. And to have the audacity! Before he could react, a black horseshoe clad hoof struck him across the face. Staggering backwards, he looked up at her with a look of confusion quickly followed by fear. Nightmare Moon’s teeth were clenched, baring her sharp incisors, as a death glare settled over the stunned human. “Nighty?” He tentatively asked, cowering slightly. “How dare you!” Nightmare Moon bellowed without a moment of hesitation, “How dare you betray me, assisting The Sun in her quest!” “Nighty, what do you-” Joseph was quickly cut off as she continued. “Don’t call me that you miserable worm of a human!” She seethed, venom dripping from her words, “To think I was so naive to believe you to be different from those other sun worshipping swine!” “What, Nighty, I. You don’t understand-” “I do understand! I trusted you with reckless abandon, letting down my guard and letting you in. I-I thought you were different! I thought you were the one! I thought...I loved you!” Nightmare Moon’s earth shaking tone faltered into one of pain and sadness. With all of her energy and rage drained, she collapsed. Her teeth remained clenched as she attempted to dispel the sobs that shook her. Tears continued down her cheeks, dripping onto the floor. Her eyes gazed deeply into Joseph’s, burning her sorrow into his soul. The raw emotion she radiated into him was too much to fathom. All Joseph could do was stand there, holding his cheek. He was speechless, confused and terrified. A knot formed in his chest as despair rose up through him by how helpless he was. “B-Begone, I never want to see you again!” Nightmare Moon screamed, using up the last of her voice and willpower. A guttural growl escaped her as she forced herself to her hooves. In a blinding flash, a large ball of energy surrounded the broken mare before taking her away. Joseph’s proximity to the high powered discharge of magic had landed him on the marble floor. Due to the high amount of energy left his skin warm, much akin to a sunburn. Joseph was in a daze. This was bad. Everything he worked for had been thrown away. His best friend, gone, betrayed by him. A slip of the tongue, ends justifying the means, ignorance is bliss, reasons bouncing around his head in an attempt to rationalize everything. He messed up big time. The sudden sound of galloping hoofsteps pulled Joseph from the pits of his mind and back to reality. He quickly sat up, and turned to see Celestia rapidly approaching. “Joseph, what happened?” The Sun Princess asked, coming to a stop, intruding his personal space. Her eyes scanned over him in motherly worry, attempting to find the cause of what she heard. “It was N-Nightmare Moon,” He shakily replied, “I-It was my fault, b-but I can fix this.” “Did she hit you?” Celestia added in a stern tone, her magical grip tightening around him, fearfully pulling him from his thoughts. Her eyes continued surveying his injuries, as Joseph attempted to reply. “Yeah, but it was my fault! I need to find her, Celestia!” Joseph said, finding his voice and attempting to pull away from her. “Joseph, you have magic burns,” She stated, “We should get you to the infirmary, while I deal with Nightmare Moon.” “No!” Joseph shouted, startling The Sun princess, effectively escaping the white alicorns grasp, “I can handle this. It was my fault, but I can fix this!” Before Celestia could react, Joseph shot down the corridor. “No, Joseph wait!” Celestia called out, but to no avail as Joseph kept running. Joseph found himself gasping for breath before a large set of chamber doors. Nightmare Moon’s doors, in fact. He had reached her chambers as fast as possible, the one place he hoped for her to be. After a few moments to collect himself, Joseph grabbed the door handle and pulled. The door rattled in place. Nightmare Moon had locked the door. “Go away!” The hurt, muffled voice of The Lunar Queen called out. “Nightmare Moon, please, it’s me.” Joseph replied, yanking on the door handle again. Silence fell, save for the muffled sniffles and sobs of the hurt mare, “Please, leave. I don’t want to see you…” Joseph sighed, begging her, “Please, Nightmare Moon, let me explain.” “Explain what?!” She yelled, shaking the door in its frame, “How you were helping Celestia?!” “No, honey, listen-” “Don’t call me that.” Nightmare Moon snarled, sounding much closer to the door, “You are dead to me!” A sigh escaped Joseph once again, his head falling against the door, “Please, just hear me out.” No response was heard. The soft sound of her footsteps faded away, replaced by her ever so faint sobs. Joseph sighed heavily, hitting his head against the door. Pleading in his thoughts for her to somehow hear him and let him in. “I’m not leaving you Nighty,” Joseph softly stated, “Please, just let me in…” Joseph physically deflated, sliding down against the door. He was going to stay there for however long it took. I-I can fix this...I hope… > Chapter 8 > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- “Joseph?” A muffled female voice asked. “Mmm…” “Joseph?” The voice continued. “Mmph-I’m sleeping…” “In the corridor?” The female questioned. Immediately the human’s head perked up, his face contorted with sleep and confusion. A slight grimace crossed his face as a tired eye squinted back against morning sunlight, blurry shapes and colors slowly morphed into one of the castle’s many corridors. Joseph tiredly glanced around the hall, his body moving faster than his sleep laden mind. Gears began turning in the human’s exhausted mind as memories of the previous days came back to the forefront of his mind, eliciting a deep frown over his lips. Hands pressed against his face and rubbed lazily in an attempt to dispel sleep and unpleasant memories from his mind. Joseph’s motions were slow, his body stiff and cold from spending long hours on the castle floor. Tired eyes traced the outline of the massive door he was huddled up to. Grunting softly, Joseph turned over before propping himself up against said door. He stretched slightly, chasing sleep and stiffness from his body as joints cracked and muscles stretched. A very lady-like grunt caught the human’s attention, his gaze thrown to the form of a slightly blurry, pink pony. Squinting ever so slightly, details were defined as he spotted a large horn and wings, paired with a tri-colored cream, magenta, and violet mane. The human sniffled slightly, sleep still heavy in his voice as he spoke, “Oh, hey Cadence. What’re you doing here?” “I could be asking you the same question.” She kindly retorted, an amused smile crossing her lips as she eyed the sleepy human. Cadence silently awaited a response, only to watch as Joseph’s mood turned somber. A soft sigh passed the human’s lips as his eyes closed. His eyebrows twitched as his forehead wrinkled in thought, clearly recalling the actions of previous days. Cadence delicately chose her words before speaking up once more, “Auntie mentioned--that an issue arose.” Pulled from his thoughts, Joseph’s head rested back against the door frame, his gaze cast towards the ceiling, “That’s one way to put it.” Though he wasn’t directly looking at her, Cadence couldn’t help but to awkwardly avert her gaze as she thought out her next move. “Or, you could say it was the biggest fuck up of a lifetime.” Joseph said breathlessly, his body deflating against the door frame. Cadence winced, she had heard the details from Celestia, but feigned ignorance, “While I cannot speak specifically about your situation, I can say from past experiences, that it’d be best for both of you to take some time, and take it slow.” The Pink Princess watched on as Joseph fell silent, her eyes locked on his as they glazed over slightly. Behind his eyes she could see him frantically scanning through his thoughts, his emotions draining from him each second he spent locked in his own head. “Hey, why don-” Cadence was cut short as Joseph brought himself back to reality. “I just need to be here to tell her. I just need to explain it to her.” Joseph stated, though Cadence couldn’t decipher if it was more for himself or if he was speaking out loud. “Do you think she’d want to see you like this?” Cadence asked, a smile threatening to overtake her features, “No offense, but you look pretty rough right now, and you could definitely use a shower.” A soft snort and the shell of a smile crossed the human's face. It seemed like she had gotten through to him as his eyes looked over himself. The clothes he wore were wrinkled and it looked quite obvious he’d been wearing them for sometime. Attempting to be inconspicuous, he rubbed the side of his face against his shoulder, as he took a whiff of himself. Joseph sneered slightly, and with a sigh pulled his legs in and stood, “Yeah--I suppose you’re right.” Cadence internally sighed as she tried to suppress her victorious smile, “C’mon, let’s go.” Joseph hobbled, his legs cold and stiff, being suddenly used after lying dormant for hours. Instinctively, a supportive pink wing wrapped around his shoulders as he continued limping down the corridor. He couldn’t help but glance back through Cadence’s pink feathers as Nightmare Moon’s door. Maybe Cadence is right...Maybe we just need a little time… Water obscured Joseph’s vision and trailed down his face, his gaze unfocused on the shower floor. The din of falling water muffled any outside interference as he sifted through his thoughts, attempting to gain warmth and guidance through the water washing over him. Maybe Cadence is right? One thing she was correct about, was his less than pleasing appearance. Large bags had formed under puffy eyes, his hair disheveled and clothes wrinkled. The shower itself helping alleviate the exhaustion that filled his body. Maybe we just need a little time… Joseph’s body moved on autopilot, quickly washing and rinsing himself, while his focus remained inside his own head. Finishing his duties, the falling water ceased and he stepped out of the shower. The human eyed the slightly opened door while toweling off, his mind wandering about what Cadence was currently doing. She’d accompanied him to his chambers and was presumably sitting casually in his room, awaiting him to finish showering. Quickly donning a pair of shorts and a shirt, Joseph stepped before the vanity mirror on the wall, to the right of the door. It’s reflection showed himself, considerably cleaner looking, but still exhausted. Though in the very corner he could see Cadence sitting on a chair in the study, a white feathered quill grasped in her aquamarine magic, furiously scratching onto a piece of parchment. “What’cha writing?” Joseph said loudly, causing the pink princess to squeak slightly and tense, the quill traveling in an uncoordinated direction across the paper. “J-Just some official business.” Cadence stuttered, a soft glow covering her cheeks as her eyes flicked between the letter and the little bit of the human she could see in the mirror. Joseph’s eyes glanced at hers in the mirror briefly, before focusing on combing his hair, “Official business, eh?” Cadence was silent for a moment, seemingly finishing the transfer of a thought to paper, before it was whisked away by a magical blue flame. Her eyes turned through the crack in the door into the mirror, meeting Joseph’s suspicious gaze. “Mhm-Yup, y’know, royal business and such.” She spoke quickly, donning a warm smile, and looking innocently at him. A raised eyebrow was the only response as Joseph carefully shaved. His gaze focusing back onto the mirror as Cadence attempted to busy herself with a book she found. A long silence passed before a light jingle of magic rang out through the room. Joseph didn’t flinch as he watched the Princess of Love quickly grasp a scroll materializing out of a blue tinted flame. Her eyes darting quickly in his direction, before opening the scroll and scanning it. Immediately she produced another piece of parchment, and began scratching furiously. Joseph silently finished up, before hitting the light switch and departing the bathroom, carefully approaching the pink princess. “So,” He said suddenly, causing Cadence to once again jump and squeak, “What type of royal business does The Princess of Love deal with?” Cadence smiled sheepishly as she hugged the parchment to her chest, “It’s really nothing, just b-boring noble stuff.” Joseph face deadpanned as a moment of silence passed, before sighing, “Hey, whatever you got goin’ on between you and Shining is none of my business.” A deep blush spread across her cheeks before replying, “Y-Yeah…” “I mean, obviously I’m not the pinnacle of knowing how to have a proper relationship, but I digress. Not my clown, not my circus.” He said casually, relieving Cadence as she nodded knowingly. “T-Thanks for understanding.” She replied with a sigh of relief, returning to her letters with less worry of Joseph seeing. Joseph carefully took a seat in one of the chairs in the study, idly looking at a book while Cadence continued on with her letter writing. With another flash, her letter disappeared, before she turned her attention to him. “So what do I do now?” He spoke, his eyes locking on to hers. “Hang out until I tell you to do something.” She stated plainly, “Though you’re considerably cleaner than you were before, you still look pretty rough.” “Gee-thanks.” Joseph said, rubbing his tired eyes. It was true, even after the shower, he could feel the stiffness of sleeping on the hall floor. “Just like, take a nap, read a book, have some lunch.” Cadence said as another scroll appeared. “But then what?” He asked, “The last thing I really want to do is be alone with my thoughts.” Cadence hesitated, “Just, hang here and wait till I come and get you, I’ll do my best to try and help you out.” Joseph sighed, as a second scroll appeared through blue flame, “I guess.” Cadence casually scanned over the new letter, before her demeanor took a sharp turn, “A-Alright, I’ve got some, uhh-business to attend to.” “Hey, like I said.” Joseph said, pantomiming using a hand to block his vision and look the other way. “Thank you,” Cadence replied with a sigh of relief, “I’ll be off now.” Joseph nodded, rising from his seat and casually walking over to his bed as Cadence departed. Unceremoniously he flopped down atop the blue plaid comforter, his eyes immediately starring holes into the ceiling. I could use some sleep… Slowly sinking into his thoughts, his eyelids fluttered closed. Subconsciously his mind battled out against the exhaustion he felt, keeping him awake no matter how hard he shut his eyes. It seemed like hours passed by, but gradually Joseph was able to calm his mind an lull himself onto the verge of sleep. The silence of his room aided in calming his frenzied mind. Relief wash over his form as he sunk into the mattress with a slight smile. Maybe he could escape his mind for a while. A content sigh escaped his lips as his mind drifted to Cadence leaving, the implications of her possibly cheating on her husband crossed his mind, but were thwarted off as soon as they appeared. In his mind, the scenario played over again, highlighting on the blue magical flame that summoned those letters. A soft growl emanated from the human’s throat as he sat up suddenly, eyes wide as a single thought crossed his mind, “Yeah, but what if?” All peace and serenity that he felt had all but been stomped on as he mind kicked into overdrive. Joseph fell back limp, his hands rubbing his temples in circles, as his mind swirled around the possibilities of what the letters held. Could Cadence have been telling the truth? Sending scandalous letters to a secret lover, or even Shining for that matter? Or, could she have been communicating with Nightmare Moon, using the cover of cheating as a diversion to draw him away...from...her… Joseph sat upright once more, “Is Cadence a double agent? Did I just get played?” The human’s body moved on it’s own as he stood from his bed, quickly approaching a nearby bureau, retrieving clothes and dressing himself. Lost in his own mind, it wasn’t until he had subconsciously slipped his shoes on that he realized what he was doing. “I mean, surely I’m just overthinking this, right?” He said to himself, slowly pacing around his room before making an abrupt turn towards the door. “Maybe a little walk around the castle will help calm my nerves and tire me out?” Joseph said to himself once more, attempting to rationalize any possible future actions. Without another word, Joseph quickly left his chambers. His concentration returning to his thoughts as he walked on autopilot down the corridor. Joseph froze silently outside of the large mahogany doors that he had previously slept outside of. His feet seemingly had a mind of their own, as he found himself outside of Nightmare Moon’s chambers once more. There was a point that he attempted to go in the opposite direction of her, but the results were obvious that it didn’t change a thing. Blood pumped loudly in his ears as he held his breath, listening intently to anything that could be happening on the other side of the doors. The corridor was desolate save for the human, no guards to castle staff to catch him awkwardly standing outside Nightmare Moon’s chambers. Joseph took a few breaths, attempting to calm himself both mentally and physically. What if Cadence was telling the truth? Before Joseph could question the validity of Cadence’s possible cover, the incredibly muffled sound of two voices emanate through the cracks of the door. The human paused, silently waiting to make sure he actually heard the voices, and that his mind was pulling any tricks. His resolve lasted all of three seconds before curiosity got the better of him, as he inched towards the door. Small, calculated steps were took, for fear of alerting those inside to his presence. His heart pounded in his ears as he softly laid a hand onto the door handle, slowly tightening his hand around the brass loop, and delicately prying the door open. Joseph’s face was wrenched in concentration and his eyes squinted for fear of a sudden explosion if he opened the door too quickly. Thankfully the aged latch gave way silently, the door pivoting smoothly on it’s hinges all but a few millimeters open. Without so much as looking in, Joseph quickly identified the voices belonged to Nightmare Moon and Cadence. A silent growl came from the human’s throat as he peered through the small crack he created. They spoke lowly, with the occasional hushed whisper. Their voices still muffled by the distance that separated them, along with the door Joseph hid behind. He eyed them intently, attempting to read their lips, but to no avail, his nervousness and pounding heart had deafened him from making out any content of their conversation. Joseph’s gaze lingered on Nightmare Moon. She looked like she always did, her cobalt battle armor donned, though even at his distance, he could see the bags under her red eyes. She was about the same shape as he was. A sigh left his lips louder than he wanted as his thoughts turned to the distress he must be causing her. His gaze fell to the floor as he thought of leaving right then. It was definitely too soon, and it was obvious she didn’t want to see him. As he untangled himself from the jungle of thoughts in his mind, his eyes widened slightly at the sight of paper strewn across the ground. More specifically, the letters he had slipped under her door, pleading with her to open up. The human knelt down, inspecting what seemed like a hundred sheets of paper just inside the door. He carefully wormed his hand through the crack in the door, sorting through his notes to her. Many were crumpled, some even looked to be charred. Joseph managed to grasp one and bring it to his face, it too was crumpled, but stained with tears. His heart fell like a rock, seeing physical evidence of the hurt he had put his mare through. Joseph was ashamed, the pitiful content of his letters for forgiveness burned into his mind, along with each individual tear stain. Joseph sighed softly once more, closing his eyes and shaking his head, “I’m so sorry, Nighty…” His eyes reopened with another sigh, looking over the letter in his hands for the last time, before dropping it to the floor. It took a moment for Joseph to realize the sudden silence from within the chambers, that drew his eyes up, which connected with four others. Bother Cadence and Nightmare Moon were staring at him. Joseph realized too little, too late, that he was no longer concealed, the door fully open and him kneeling in the doorway. “Joseph?!” They shouted in unison, startling the crouching human, who stumbled slightly before standing and partially bracing himself for impact. Both mares were showing a frighteningly wide range of emotions. Cadence’s normal pink coat had morphed red, as she looked like she was about to catch on fire. Her tail whipped around like angrily as she glared daggers at the lone human. Cadence’s wings were spread threateningly, making her look larger than she was, as she trudged towards Joseph. Her mouth was moving, but Joseph heard no sound, his attention captured by Nightmare Moon. A variety of emotions played across the dark mare’s features, rage boiled behind her eyes as her cheeks puffed out slightly while she scowled at him. Though, it quickly softened in a way Joseph had never seen before. Their eyes met, and Joseph became acutely aware of the hurt that was within her. Hurt that he had caused. But there was something else, a mental battle of sorts, though as soon as Joseph saw it, she turned away. He could see how her eyes shimmered with moisture, no doubt recalling memories of the prior days. Joseph became captivated by a single tear that rolled down her cheek, and like the tear fell, so did his heart. Joseph was completely dead, to whatever Cadence was saying to him. Guilt washed over him again like it first did when Nightmare Moon left, causing his heart to sink all over again. Though he couldn’t help but to watch her. Cadence continued on her undoubtedly biblical tirade. Nightmare Moon seemed to be the only other one listening, as her head snapped around as Cadence said something. The boiling hot rage he briefly saw earlier was overshadowed by the glare that Nightmare Moon shot into the back of Cadence’s head. Slowly, the fire in her eyes cooled back into little black slits as her gaze dropped to the floor. Nightmare Moon hesitantly turned away, glancing between Joseph and the open balcony. She nervously chewed her lip, seemingly weighing her options. A short step towards Joseph was reluctantly retracted with a sigh as her horn gradually charged with magic. Her eyes closed in concentration as the built up magic discharged, “Nightmare Moon, Wait!” A blinding white flash took over Joseph’s vision, followed shortly by a soft pop, signaling that Nightmare Moon was gone. It wasn’t until a few seconds afterwards that his eyesight returned, blinking and rubbing his eyes as a very displeased Cadence came into focus. She was silent for a moment, before sighing loudly and picking up where she left off. “Stallions.” She stated, “You tell them to do one thing, and they can’t even do that!” Cadence had gone up one side of him and down the other, though the effect of the chewing out was lost on the human. Out of breath and energy, she stopped in front of him with a glare. “Well?” It took a moment as Joseph brought his focus onto the pink princess before him. His mind slowly rebooting itself, but not necessarily in the right direction. “Where’d she go?” Cadence let out a mix of a scream and a groan as her head suddenly hung limp, “We were making good progress! Why didn’t you listen to me?” She said, her tone full of frustration. “Cadence. Where did she go?” Joseph asked in a stern tone. “No.” The Pink Princess matched his tone, “You’re not going to do this again.” Joseph growled sharply, taking a set towards the princess of love, “Cadence-” Blue magic crackled from her horn, causing the human to reel back and shield himself for fear of being blinded again. The sound of a familiar pop signaled the end of the spell, as the brightness slowly receded, leaving Joseph by himself within the chambers. “Son of a bitch…” Joseph breathed out, blinking away the spots in his vision. Slightly disoriented from the previous teleportation spell, Joseph stumbled over to Nightmare Moon’s bed. He sat heavily, his hands quickly attempting to dissuade his minor visual impairment. Though slightly distracted and blinded, he could feel guilt swirling around his chest. Why am I this way? Why can’t I just listen? Gradually the spots left his eyesight, which was focused on the floor as he occupied himself with his thoughts. Joseph had lost track of time, as a sudden clarity brought his focus back to reality. He stared down before him, becoming aware of several sheets of paper spread across the floor. Quirking an eyebrow, he snatched a random sheet off of the floor and examined it. The implication of snooping through Nightmare Moon’s personal letters was lost as he continued on. Much like his letters by the door, several were crumpled up, the ink smudged and the paper stained with tears. It’s content, though short and messy, was visible. Joseph, please. I want. I need. I miss. I’m sorry. If it wasn’t obvious how distraught she was over this, it became extremely, painfully obvious. Though her thoughts were incomplete and scratched out, the notes tugged sharply at his heart strings. Sh-She still cares! Maybe...? Joseph couldn’t comprehend the emotions he was feeling. Utter guilt and regret sharply contrasted with awkward happiness and excitement. The room seemed to spin slightly, as his eyes darted from letter to letter, still trying to grasp what he was feeling. After a few minutes, he was able to settle down slightly. On her nightstand he took notice of more letters, that seemingly met the same fate as the ones at the door and those that were on the floor. A slight smile of hope crossed his lips as he lost himself in thought once more. She still cares! A-At least enough to respond! She tried to respond! Maybe things aren’t so bad after all, even though I...ruined...what Cadence was working...on… A sigh escaped his lips as he deflated, his head hung low. The sudden realization felt like a lead weight, as guilt continued to course through his veins, which quickly gave way to anger. Angry over the situation, angry over his ignorance, and especially angry over Cadence not telling him where his mare was. If she just told me where she was, maybe we’d be smoothing things out sooner… His thoughts took a sharp turn, rage and anger boiling under his skin. Cadence. Joseph stood sharply, Nightmare Moon’s crumpled note fluttering to it’s previous place on the floor as he nearly ran to the door. His pile of pleading papers flew wildly as he stormed past, flying around in little paper tornadoes as the door slammed shut. He needed to find Cadence, and there’s only one of two places she could be. The doors to the throne room were thrown open as Joseph all but burst through them. Armor clinked loudly as guards readied themselves for possible contact, as he made a beeline towards the throne. Cadence was there, standing there, mildly terrified as her eyes met his. She was breathing heavily at the sudden sight of Joseph bursting in. Beside her, sat Celestia, sitting deathly calm and extremely unamused. Joseph tried his best to keep his gaze locked onto Cadences’, so as to not wilt under Celestia’s life ending gaze. Cadence turned to Celestia, with a look of ‘see?’. She did her best to try and ignore the human as he continued on his march. “Cadence.” Joseph called from across the room. Other than her ears flickering slightly, she stood rigid facing away from him. Joseph didn’t relent, repeating her name as he closed in. Celestia’s glare was almost palpable as he closed in on the throne. “Cadence.” He said a third time, Joseph sighed loudly and repeated himself, “Caden-” “If you would just stop!” The Pink Princess snapped, with a force that startled both Celestia and Joseph alike, “For one moment, if you could, please pull your head out of your ass and see how you’re affecting those around you!” Joseph gapped, blood rushing to his cheeks as rage boiled under his skin. His gaze hot enough to singe flesh as he leveled himself with the pink princess, “If you would have just told me where she was!” Cadence’s jaw clenched as she leaned towards him, “To think how thick your head is-” “Enough!” Celestia boomed, her voice shaking the foundation of the castle and everything in it. Glass rattled in it’s frames, light fixtures shook, and nearby armor worn by guards clinked loudly as time itself came to a screeching halt. Cadence froze with fear, like a filly being caught with her hoof in the cookie jar. Her pink fur paled like she saw a ghost, and could only stare ahead under her aunts icy glare. On the other hand, Joseph was a polar opposite. His cheeks flushing red as the fire in his eyes turned into a raging inferno. He had been successfully riled up, and the brakes on his rage train had long since been discarded. “And you, Celestia!” He shouted pointedly, “I know it was your sister and all,” He added in a slightly mocking tone, “But it’s been a thousand years, if you just learned how to forgi-” A golden ray of magic was discharged from Celestia’s horn, which quickly sealed around Joseph’s lips, turning the rest of his sentence into muffled hums. “Before you say something you’ll truly regret.” Celestia said in a deathly calm voice. Her tone was sub-zero, stopping the fiery human in his tracks. A chill ran down his spine as he locked eyes with her. Joseph quickly became perplexed; how could the princess of the sun turn so cold? Any rage or fight he had left in him was quelled as he gulped thickly. “There’s no reason for you to be yelling at my niece, or myself, for your own mistakes.” Celestia stated, her tone razor sharp and threatening to cut through the human’s skin, “You made your bed, now sleep in it.” Within a millisecond, heat coursed through the human’s veins as the fire inside him was reignited. His eyes widened in disbelief as he did his best to glare down the Solar Monarch. Muffled curses flowed beyond his sealed lips, as he resorted to waving his middle fingers around to get his point across. Celestia watched on unamused, only to deadpan a quick statement, “That means nothing to me.” Out of options to express himself and the fire within him slowly dying, he followed up with a final waving of his middle fingers, and shared a wilting glare with each alicorn, before turning sharply and stomping out. The mighty doors of Joseph’s chambers slammed shut with a loud grunt from said human. He was not even a foot into his room, before the dam sealing his lips broke, as a flood of curse words came cascading out of his mouth. “Fucking asshole! Son of a bitch! Shit-fuck, fucking-goddammit-AHH!” Joseph screamed into his hands, blindly pacing around his room, occasionally bumping into random pieces of furniture. Joseph continued on, yelling obscenities and blindly swinging his arms in frustration. After several minutes of non-progressive screaming, the human slowly ran out of steam and collapsed onto the floor. His head rocked on the floor as his gaze turned to the ceiling, his mind vividly replaying his predicament. “Goddammit.” He sighed, closing his eyes, searching for anything else to focus on. Though he was continuously drawn back to was Celestia said to him. There’s no reason for you to be yelling at my niece or myself, for your own mistakes. Celestia’s words echoed through his ears. Joseph sighed loudly again, “I mean, I guess.” He said out loud, taking a moment to pick apart her words. “Like-she didn’t make it easy, but it was I, who…” Joseph sighed again, “...Lied to her…” He fell silent for a moment, rubbing his eyes tiredly, “So much for best of intentions…” “A-And…” He stuttered slightly, “Cadence was just trying to help. And I guess I, screwed that up too…” For one moment, if you could, please pull your head out of your ass and see how you’re affecting those around you. Came Cadence’s voice, very distinct in the forefront of his mind. The human fell silent once again, before letting out a drawn out groan, “How big of a jackass have I been?” Joseph never received an answer, as the room fell silent. He sighed for the umpteenth time, as his focus turned to an interesting design on the ceiling. In an instant, everything from the point of meeting Nightmare Moon came flooding back. Memories, regrets, fights. A cry of frustration echoed off the silent walls of his chambers. Joseph quickly stood, sitting in silence was driving him crazy as he was left alone with his thoughts. Sleep wasn’t going to happen, and pondering ‘what-ifs’ would likely end up killing him. His eyes darted around the room, looking for something, anything, to distract him from his own mind. It wasn’t until his eyes landed on a shelf in his study, that a new thought entered his mind. Relief, finally… Joseph’s eyes focused onto a decorative glass bottle, filled with a light amber liquid. Before his mind could register movement, he found himself standing before the magical bottle. His hands grasped the glass tightly, cradling it and rolling it gently in his hands, as if it was the most important thing in the world. Apple Family Moonshine... It was a ‘house warming’ gift from Applejack herself, upon the day he moved to Canterlot. She said it came from her own special stash of alcohol, Applejack claimed it was several decades old, which held true to its design and labeling. There was a brief moment of hesitation, before he unscrewed the top of the bottle. A slight sigh left his lips accompanied by a slight twinge of regret, as his olfactory receptors were all but melted at the smell of the potent alcohol. Joseph nodded slightly, before taking a deep breath, and up ending the bottle. The human bravely took three large gulps, the amber liquid cauterizing his throat as he chugged it down. A full body shudder ceased his intake, as his chest was racked by coughing. Immediate regret spread through his body, followed by warmth from the alcohol. His throat and mouth were on fire from the apple flavored paint thinner. A warm aftertaste of sweet apples slowly soothed his scorched throat and scrambled mind, as he continued to wheeze and cough. “How was this fun in college?” He asked rhetorically, followed by another bout of coughing. Gradually he regained control over his breathing and was able to deal with the liquid fire he had just consumed. Having not eaten all day, he could already feel the effects of Applejack’s moonshine. “Well,” Joseph sighed, “The band-aid has been ripped off, so-” He cut himself off, throwing back another two gulps of moonshine. The human fervently shook his head in an attempt to rid himself of the temporary discomfort as his body shuttered once again. Without hesitating, he tipped the bottle back for a third time, draining the rest of its contents. The bottle clinked against the shelf, as Joseph shakily set it down. “Okay. Okay. Okay…” He gulped, breathing heavily, “That probably wasn’t the best thing to do.” Though the full effects of the moonshine had yet to be felt, Joseph was quickly losing some control of his brain functions. A final thought entered his mind, as he quickly retrieved a pen and parchment, sending a request to the castle staff for more alcohol, and something to help stop the moonshine from destroying the lining of his stomach. Dusk had fallen across Canterlot, the very last rays of the days light basked over the top of the castle. Joseph remained confined to his chambers, more specifically, lying on the floor staring up at the ceiling. Soft music played from the study like white-noise, as he stared off into space, enjoying the full effects of the alcohol he consumed. Surrounding him on the floor were dirty plates and empty liquor bottles, evidence of his quest to drink his problems away. It had helped, slightly. Joseph felt like he was able to settle the majority of his regrets and guilt, leaving him with an odd emptiness. He felt good about it, even though he had to do it while intoxication. Joseph’s eyes were remained glued to the ceiling, out of sheer boredom rather than thought. He was drunk and alone, and the only pony he wanted to see, clearly, wanted nothing to do with him. There wasn’t much to do, besides watching movies or listening to music he’s heard or seen a thousand times. The lone human sighed as a gentle cool breeze swirled through his chambers. His eyes peered out the open doors to the balcony, the deep blue of the night sky staring back at him, accompanied by hundreds of shining stars. Joseph sat up quickly, wobbling slightly as his mind played catch up on the sudden movement. Maybe some fresh air would help clear his mind, and entertain him long enough for more beverages to be delivered to his room. Standing on shaky legs, Joseph proceeded to unceremoniously plow his way through the dishes and silverware around him. The gravity of what he consumed didn’t set in until he got a higher view of the carnage that lay around him. He sighed, he could deal with that later. Joseph quickly neared the doors, a great sigh of relief left his lips as the night air swirled around him, sobering him up ever so slightly. His mind swam with new thoughts as he lumbered out onto the balcony. What did he really have left? If Nightmare Moon decided to leave him, what did he really have? He was essentially a prisoner with open air rights, condemned to live out his days within the confines of the castle. Could he escape? Would he even be able to make it outside of the marble walls of Canterlot before he was captured? Even if he made it out of the capital, surely he’d be recognized and hunted wherever he went. Still, no one would likely help him, ponies he’d know in his short time still showed fear whenever he showed up, something that’d probably be stuck with him until he died. Joseph sighed once more as his staggering slowed, nearing the railing of his balcony. His eyes glanced out over the night cloaked city of Canterlot. Orange lights and dark figures of ponies milled about freely on the open streets. It was beautiful, even though it made him long to stretch his legs, to leave the castle. He quickly turned his gaze down the mountain said, into the great valleys of Equestria. Maybe there’d be a place out there for him? What if this was as close to freedom as he got?Was he really a prisoner here? Those thoughts continuously circling around his head. What else did he have? His mood fell sharply, along with his gaze over the edge of the balcony. It was a long, long, way down. What if? What if that’s my only way to freedom? Joseph gulped as he leaned over farther, his eyes tracing the dark rocks and edges of the mountain side below him. I-If Nightmare Moon doesn’t want anything to do with me anymore, and I’m stuck here forever, maybe...maybe I- Joseph’s hand that he thought was bracing himself against the marble railing slipped, going over the edge as his head and body followed suit. His mind along with his stomach did somersaults as the alcohol in his system hindered his reactionary scrambling for anything to grab on to. He gasped loudly, one final breath as he was petrified with fear. Joseph was silent in horror, freezing up as he felt the edge of the railing slip passed his stomach. His hands and feet widely flailing for anything, but to no avail. Time slowed as he continued over the edge. His eyes glued to the ground below him that he’d surely meet quickly. Nothing flashed before his eyes. No last minute regrets. No memories. No guilt. No sadness. Not even Nightmare Moon. Nothing, save for a single thought. I’m going to die because I was drunk… Joseph felt the railing scrap against his shins as he fell over the edge. The real point of no return, no amount of pleading or flailing could save him now or grant him any extra time. His eyes shut tightly, swallowing his fate hard as he brace for the inevitable impact. I’m sorry Nightmare Moon… His whole body jerked suddenly, causing his eyes to shoot open in confusion and panic. His vision darting around for anything that could have caught him, as he still eyed the ground below him. Why wasn’t he falling? Was he dead? Blood rushed to his head as his heart beat loudly in his ears. It took a few moments before he realized he was holding his breath, releasing a large exhale as he continued to look around. Still facing downwards, he strained slightly, gazing up at his feet. Around his ankle, he saw quickly, a dark blue ring of magic. “You know you’re not supposed to jump off of the balcony, right?” Came the slightly condescending voice of Luna, loud wing beats accompanied her that barely registered to the human over his heart beating in his ears. Joseph tittered shakily, quickly patting himself down to make sure everything was still intact, “You-uh, mind?” Luna landed gracefully upon the balcony with a soft ‘clink’ of her horseshoes. She grinned innocently as she peered down over the edge at him, “Are you saying you don’t like your current view?” “Uh-not-uh, exactly.” He replied with quick, nervous laugh. His hands stretched out at his sides to keep his shirt out of his mouth as he spoke. Before he could get fully used to his new position, his world flipped over once more, as Luna graciously set him back on solid ground. Joseph exhaled a huge sigh of relief upon feeling the balcony beneath him, his eyes shutting as he dealt with the slight dizziness he felt, “Oh thank god!” “Thanks Luna.” He added breathily, rolling over and latching himself onto one of her forelegs in an attempt at a hug. A genuine smile crossed her lips as she looked down at the thankful human, “‘Twas nothing, my dear human. You can refer to me as ‘god’ anytime.” Joseph chuckled softly, his eyes still closed, all while holding onto the Lunar Princess. Luna was silent for a moment, before sniffing slightly at the distinct smell of alcohol. An air of suspicion washing over her, “Dear Joseph, have you been drinking? “Since like-noon, maybe.” He nonchalantly replied, releasing her foreleg and rolling over, propping his head up against a banister, “I’ve been trying to drink my sorrows away. Or give myself alcohol poisoning, whichever one happens first.” “Has it worked?” Luna questioned, an air of innocence in her voice. “I don’t think so.” He slurred ever so slightly, peering up at her with one eye. They fell silent once more, before Luna started, “So I heard you had an, encounter, with my sister earlier.” Her smile blatantly obvious in her mirthful tone. Joseph sighed, deflating slightly, “Yeah, you could call it that.” “I heard you really gave her a piece of your-” “Luna.” He stated sharply, the blue mare stepped back in shock, “Please, I’ve been drinking for a reason.” “None of this has been easy.” Joseph spoke, “And besides what I’ve fucked up, it’s not like any of you have been doing anything to help.” Luna was silent for a moment in thought, her expression neutral, but Joseph could sense a sharp edge to her demeanor, “Is that truly how you see this?” She softened slightly, like speaking to a child, “Though I cannot speak for my sister, or anypony else, I’ve done what I could.” She paused slightly, locking eyes with him, “Joseph, I spent my imprisonment with her, I have done what I could. There were just-some things I was unable to give her. Add your arrival and my courtship with Twilight, it’s put some tension between her and I.” Joseph sighed, his hands rubbing his eyes, “Yeah, but Luna, she’s literally your worst qualities. Jealousy, anger, impatience.” The Lunar Princess gapped silently as the human continued, “The jealousy and resentment you held for your sister was so great, that it literally manifested itself into a pony. It’s not like she wanted to be created, but she was, and has been treated like garbage by everyone, when she never asked for any of it.” “You both are responsible, but all the blame is put on her. Celestia gets her baby sister back, and we have someone we can point at and say it’s their fault, hooray!” Joseph continued, spinning his hand as emphasis at the end of his statement. He sighed loudly, relaxing his head back against the banister. A quick glance at Luna showed that he had dug deep with his words. Her ears were splayed back slightly, as a slightly somber expression crossed her face. “You guys have treated her like a villain, and this terrible monster since day one, and every day since.” Joseph said softly, his eyes closed as he spoke his mind, “She doesn’t know how to be anything else, because no one has given her a chance to be something else.” His sudden tone of clarity stunned Luna, who watched the drunken human intently. A hand idly ran through his hair, his eyes still closed as he pondered his thoughts. “And then here I am.” He sighed, “Screwing up everything. Speaking like I have answers, but-I...I don’t know how to fix this.” Joseph fell silent once more, as Luna idly chewed her lip. A few moments passed as she collected herself and her thoughts, a soft sniffle and her clearing her throat caught the human’s attention. “Well,” Luna said softly, trying to find her voice, “I’ll leave you to-this-then.” Slowly she moved away from him, her wings fanning out as she prepared for flight. A moment of hesitation, and she glanced back at him, unmoving and eyes closed. “I hope you find the answers you’re looking for.” She paused, though he still didn’t look at her, “I’ll keep you in my thoughts, Joseph. Goodnight.” The sound of her flapping wings drew Joseph from his mind. By the time the sound registered in his mind, Luna was long gone into the night. He sighed loudly again, pinching the bridge of his nose has his head ‘thudded’ softly against the railing. His mind replaying the things that he said to her, and the sudden realization of what he said dawned on him. “Great. 0-4 on ponies I’ve managed to piss off.” He groaned, “Guess that only leaves Twilight…” Joseph sat in silence once more in the now chilly night air. He was starting to sober up, and his own words echoing in his ears was starting to get to him. “Sleep doesn’t sound like a bad idea after all…”
