> Double Date Trouble > by ImaginaryCatnip > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- > Double Date Trouble > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Prologue: “Stop following me already!” she yelled once again to him, however, he rarely listened to others let alone to his better judgment. Staring from across the small street, his eyes looked deeply into her own, searching for anything that might give him a clue as to what to say. Normally, he would try to repair the damage with decent dose of humor but deep inside he was well aware that it would only upset her more and where was any joy in that? “Fine, but let me say just one thing.” he responded finally, after drawing deep breath, hoping that she will at least give him a chance to say it. “Make it quick but whatever you say now won’t change anything.” she replied coldly, her voice dripping with anger and a hint of sadness mixed in all of this. He honestly didn’t know what to say to make it all better so he decided to reply with the simplest ways possible. “Whatever you might think, I really enjoyed our time together so… happy Heart’s and hooves day.” as he spoke those few words, she seemed to freeze in place, her beautiful eyes going wide and her wings close to her sides to shield her from chilly wind. Then she said those magical words… ***13-th February*** The Golden Oak Library, was just as lively as ever, which meant that Twilight Sparkle, twenty three years old element of magic, sat quietly at her desk while reading another book as she usually had in habit. At the same time, her assistant Spike the dragon, who grew a lot since they first came to Ponyville and sprouted wings one year ago, was now eighteen years old and like every single day he was going about his own routine as the perfect library assistant. Many years passed since they moved to the small city, many adventures went past them and many foes were defeated. However, one should never relax to much because soon, the routine which was constant for years might change in a single second or with a single letter... “Spike! Can you make some tea?!” shouted Twilight, although not in demanding voice but a kind one, her voice pleasant to hear. The book she was reading was about deserts and so immersed she was in the text that she quickly felt her throat going dry the more she progressed. It always fascinated her that a book could have such effect on the reader. “Right away!” replied Spike as he put down a small tower of books near empty bookshelf which he was about to dust off. For the young dragon, who grew significantly in size, life seemed as calm as ever. He no longer chased after Rarity, who started dating Trenderhoof two years ago so he could devote his life to helping Twilight at the library. Truthfully, he realized back then how alone his best friend must have felt all this time when he was not around, spending time with another mare. Being the gentledragon that he was, Spike vowed to never let any simple crush to again make him neglect Twilight like that. Moving through to the kitchen, his every move automated from years of practice, Spike began to remember the time he spent with Twilight in those recent years. As he grew up, she started to actively teach him simple spells like for example one that would let him change his size, the most useful of all in his opinion. Otherwise, he would quickly outgrow the building and his job as her assistant would probably end. He really owed that beautiful mare who he knew so long. Of course, that line of thought led him to remember other things as well, like a period of two, three years ago when he started lusting after all mares around him and Twilight, whom he saw every day was no exception and quickly turned into object of his affection. All of it made him question his relationship to her and ultimately he decided that they are simply a pair of best friends. Thankfully for Spike, she was oblivious to all of it, heck, she is so bad at practical romance that he often wondered if she ever will get her special somepony. -And another Hearts and Hooves day is on the way. She will probably spend it in books like every year.- He thought while shaking his head in resignation from side to side. He tried convincing her in the past, he tried every year to make her go out on a date, but she always won that discussion with those elaborate arguments that he couldn’t top. There was a time in the past that Spike looked through her genealogy tree to see if she didn’t had a mule in her family because of how stubborn she was… mad idea as it might be, it was worth checking and seeing her expression when he explained to her what he was doing. *click* upon hearing the familiar sound, he turned to see the water boiled in magical kettle which they invented together so he quickly prepared Twilight’s and his drink and got over to her. Upon placing the cup at the desk, the mare smiled at him sincerely and took a sip. It was then that Spike decided to try convincing her to go on a date with somepony, while sipping his own tea. Drawing his breath, he prepared himself for yet another discussion. “It looks like another holiday is upon us. How can you concentrate on reading with all that commotion outside?” “It’s not so bad, it happens every year and after all, Hearts and Hooves day is one of the most celebrated events.” she replied slowly, giving Spike a long stare, she obviously knew what it was about but wasn’t going to be blunt and honest like Applejack. “True Twi but to me, it’s a little sad that the princess isn’t going to show herself for this day.” he began but upon noticing her cold stare, Spike quickly shut up, his tail wiggling from side to side nervously, while he wondered if maybe he said too much already. “And I suppose everypony would be glad to see me, walking single among the happy pairs?” asked Twilight bitterly, knowing well enough that Spike could only counter it with one argument. She wasn’t really angry at him but Twilight was well aware of not being the prettiest flower out there and not ever having a coltfriend really made her frustrated. “Is it so impossible for a princess who protected Equestria to get a date?” honestly inquired Spike, already feeling that soon he will lose the argument. To hide his nervousness, he took a big and long sip of the hot tea, losing himself in the rich flavor. “You know how It ended last time.” she quietly said, but loud enough for him to hear. When her words reached him, he nearly spit the whole tea at the book she was reading. “Twilight, that was ONE PONY. That blue-maned guard from crystal empire was a douche bag anyway and it took one talk with him to see it. The two of you weren’t even on one date but exchanged like few words! Can it be even considered a talk when guys like that comes right up and says he will allow you to date him? Besides, you can’t say that everypony will treat you like that!” argued Spike fiercely because if there was one thing he hated the most, it was Twilight giving up. She never did it when she fought, she never did it when she searched for answers to difficult questions and she never did it when she was helping him. It was unlike her to ever say that she gives up on something and he refused to accept her reasoning. “And are you sure that the next guy will be normal and not interested in my princess status? Are you so sure to let me fail again?” she asked, gazing into his eyes intently and Spike couldn’t help but shift nervously under those piercing purple eyes of hers. Dragon that he was, he knew that angry Twilight could really wreak havoc so he decided it best not to make her upset more than she already was. It would take miracle or divine intervention to move Twilight out of the library on Hearts and Hooves day anyway. “Fine, you’ve made your point and…” he began to say but then a divine intervention indeed happened in the form of sealed letter from goddess of the sun herself, that landed on the ground in accompaniment of green flames. Grabbing the parchment in his claw, Spike unrolled it and gave it a quick glance, his mouth smiling the more he read. Shifting uncomfortably upon seeing the delight on his face, Twilight couldn’t take the tension anymore, for her gut told her that within next five minutes her world is going to collapse. “What does it say?” Clearing his throat, Spike looked at the mare before his eyes and then he started to read it while doing his best princess Celestia imitation. My dearest friend, Twilight Sparkle As you may know, tomorrow is a very special day for all ponies of Equestria, a day of sharing happiness and love. However, not all ponies seem to enjoy this wonderful event which is why I have a very private favor to ask of you. The daughter of new royal guards captain, who took over your brother’s old post, is living a secluded life here in Canterot and her father is quickly growing frustrated with tons of invitations and love letters that his daughter receives every day from other royal guards. During one of our conversations, he asked me if I knew of a place to hide his daughter for this one day, which is why I’m writing to you. I wish of you to accompany her tomorrow and show her Ponyville, where she might catch a break from all of those love advances. If you can’t accept this task because you have plans for tomorrow, please let me know and I will find another way to deal with this problem. If by chance you accept this selfish request of mine, meet her in Ponyville café tomorrow at eight am. She goes by the name Daisy Song. Sincerely, Princess Celestia. As he finished reading and took his eyes off the parchment, Spike saw Twilight who behaved as If she looked into basilisk eyes, frozen solid and staring while not blinking at all. Worried as he always was for her, he came closer to investigate and moved his claw in front of his eyes. “Twilight?” “Wha- Tell me this is another of your jokes Spike.” whispered Twilight almost in pleading voice, however her assistant only shook his head, while amused smile adorned his features. “You know, you can always tell the princess that you…” he began in more serious manner but as if reading his mind, Twilight put a hoof on his mouth silencing him at once. “I can’t Spike, she relies on me…what am I going to do now?” asked worriedly Twilight as she got up and started trotting back and forth, heavy frown on her face, eyebrows knitted tightly together. “What’s the big deal anyway? You're simply doing another favor for the princess,” replied Spike but the look Twilight gave him, left him with puzzled expression. There was obviously more going on but whatever it was, it simply skipped his attention. Noticing it, Twilight decided to elaborate for him. “I have never attended Hearts and Hooves day in Ponyville and suddenly I’m showing up with an unknown mare… how would it look to other ponies in your opinion?” as she said those words, realization hit Spike, for he understood now the reason of her frustration. Indeed, if things were left like this, Twilight’s reputation would suffer an addition of ‘liking mares’. “Uh…I wish I could help yo…” just when he was about to utter those words, he shoot some more of his green flame and another parchment landed on the ground. “Maybe she changed her mind!” hopefully exclaimed Twilight as she observed Spike’s scaly claw grab the scroll in similar manner as before, unroll it and then the dragon proceeded to read. However, this time his expression was more far from delighted, he was mortified. Not bothering to clear his throat, he began reading in weak voice but loud enough so Twilight heard him. Our dear friend Spike It has come to our attention that it is now the time of Hearts and Hooves day, a time of joy and bonding. However, another dear friend of mine doesn’t seem to know the meaning of love which is why we wish for him to observe it and learn. We are well aware that it might be a selfish request on our part but we wish to ask of thou, as our friend, to take him tomorrow around Ponyville and show him how ponies in smaller town go about such event. We realize that thou might have plans for tomorrow, so we wish that thou let us know if such request is inappropriate of us. If thou doesn’t have anything against, my friend shall be waiting tomorrow morning at eight in the morning At Ponyville café. His name is Charminghoof. With utmost respect, Princess Luna. Mirroring Twilight’s earlier disbelief, Spike felt weak in his legs and simply sat on the ground with a heavy thud. True, he wasn’t as close to princess Luna as Twilight was to princess Celestia but refusing was not an option because lying would be the last thing Spike would ever do as his dragon code dictated. Looking at each other, both purple inhabitants of the Great Oak Library sat in complete silence, with only loud chatter from ponies outside, as their tea grew colder with each passing second. The two of them felt so numb, that neither knew what to say. All they knew in this moment was, that if no solution would be found till tomorrow, then their reputation around Ponyville would be forever ruined. “What are we going to do…” said Spike worriedly, his fears growing as more time passed. He looked over to Twilight for answers but then remembered that the mare before him knew next to nothing about romance and dates, not to mention attending Hearts and Hooves day. As if to deny his perception of her, Twilight stood up sharply and moved like a whirlwind through library, jumping from one bookshelf to another, searching through books. So focused was she on her task, that she didn't even bother to put them back in their proper place. “What are you doing Twi?!” inquired Spike bewildered at her action while already knowing the answer. He was glad that she tried to find an answer to their problem but he was pretty sure that no book would have them. “I have a solution!” yelled Twilight as she held a simple book with heart on the front. Sitting down, she began reading more intently among scattered, dusty tomes that somehow avoided today’s cleaning. Cocking an eyebrow, Spike looked at her, not at all convinced as he noticed the title ‘How to date in extreme conditions’. –Really? Who writes books like that? - Coming closer, he sat next to Twilight silently and was about to take a peek, however she closed the book and looked at him with that crazy look he came to know during all their years together. “It’s simple Spike, we have two mares, one colt and one dragon. What we need is to go together and others will think it’s a looks like double date.” -Really?- thought Spike not at all convinced if it was the best solution, because it didn’t solve their problem at all. All it would do is to change the type of misunderstandings that would arise into more bearable one. However, even he had to admit that it was still better than gaining a certain type of reputation if he were to go out with a colt on fourteenth February. “I guess we should prepare then” he commanded, gaining a puzzled look from Twilight and yet again he was reminded that she knew next to nothing about dating. Thankfully, his earlier experience with Rarity taught him enough to know exactly what to do. “Come with me, we need to plan the date.” He stood up and began to walk towards Twilight’s desk, where there was always a parchment and quill ready for quick notes. However, the voice from behind stopped him as if he collided with invisible wall. “Plan the date?” For all her theoretical knowledge, he was once again the witness of Twilight facing practice and failing. Faceclawing, he turned towards the mare as if he were made out of stone and the mare couldn’t help but give him the most curious look he ever saw. It was cute seeing her like that, sitting around scattered books while looking like a little, clueless filly, but still… how inexperienced can somepony be when it came to dating? “A schedule for tomorrow.” he rephrased, so she would better understand. Spike could only hope that creating such schedule would be easier than teaching Twilight how to cook. Last time he attempted it, she burned water however was that possible. “Oh, I see, why didn’t you said so in the first place?!” with that, she stood up and moved towards him, the curious spark shining brightly in her purple eyes… and Spike knew instantly that it will be a very long night of planning, him doing most of the work. However, there was a good side to all of this and he needed to stay optimistic. At least Twilight will finally learn something about relationships and if it went good enough, maybe she won’t end up an old, grumpy and lonely mare in the distant future. ***Schedule plan no. 1 – Breakfast at café*** The chilly morning air traveled to Spike’s lungs and back, returning in a little cloud of steam, as the rays of sun shone brightly on him from the eastern window. It wasn’t a cold day but for a dragon who had literally a fire raging inside him, this temperature wasn’t the warmest there could be. Not that he minded such weather, being a walking furnace and all. He and Twilight sat inside the café, while looking through the window for their respective guests. With the corner of his eye, Spike noted his companion impatience because the guests were obviously late by almost thirty minutes now and this ruined their schedule a little… an event which always made Twilight act uneasy as if she was sitting on needles. Upon entering the café at eight, both of them received a curious looks, for Ponyville wasn’t that big of a town and it was highly uncommon to see the youngest princess and her dragon assistant on a ‘date’. Noticing the hushed voices from all around Spike couldn’t really blame the town inhabitants – Yes, it looks like a date but isn’t one. Not that it matters, ponies will gossip anyway. Good that Twi doesn’t notice it in her current state or she would be running home from embarrassment. – Just as he was pondering about this very possible scenario, a ring of a small bell resounded near the café entrance, announcing that new guest entered the place and much to Spike relief, the stallion trotted towards their table. Spike scanned his features curiously, noticing his strong build, his bluish coat and golden mane with three small braids to the side. A pair of similar colored, golden eyes looked from Twilight to Spike, as the newcomer shifted nervously, probably thinking what to say. The guy didn’t seem to look malicious at all to Spike, if anything, he reminded him of Fluttershy, who would often act in similar manner, so being the gentledrake that he was, he replied with light tone “Hello, you must be Charminghoof, I’m Spike and this is my friend Twilight Sparkle. Hope you didn’t have any problems with travel?” Upon registering those words, the stallion relaxed visibly and flashed a gentle smile in their direction before his lips parted to reply “Not at all, I’m just a little shocked at meeting up with a real, mighty dragon and to have one as my guide is truly an honor. At first I thought it to be princess Luna’s joke. Pleased to meet you both.” Laughing lightly to hide his own nervousness at the compliment, Spike motioned for the new guy to sit down which he obliged but then, another guest entered the establishment, this one a mare who looked around sharply and upon noticing Twilight, she beamed happily and trotted over just like Charminghoof did mere seconds ago but with far more confidence. Her light step and plot swaying from side to side made other ponies, especially males, look in her direction lustfully which made the place resound with several slaps…the jealous mares taking their just revenge on their coltfriends. The whole reaction came as no surprise, because the newcomer was quite a beauty with that chocolate brown coat and light cyan mane, her eyes brown as well. Twilight instantly understood the reason why Celestia made such a request of her for today, imagining literally a mountain of love letters for this mare. However, it was all a false beauty, because the most noticeable thing about this one was a big dosage of mascara, especially the golden eye shadow which gave her eyes an unusual and sensual shape. When the new visitor came to their table, she looked intently at Twilight and greeted her in a brash manner “Hi, my name is Daisy Song, you must be Twilight Sparkle, I heard so much about you from princess Celestia and…um…I hope I’m not interrupting your…dates?” “No, no, no, no, no, these aren’t my dates, my friend Spike was asked by princess Luna to accompany her friend Charminghoof and we assumed that the four of us can hang out together… I hope it’s okay with both of you?” Finished Twilight out of breath, for she explained everything so fast it was a miracle she didn’t perform a sonic rainboom with her voice. Looking at each other, Charminghoof and Daisy Song smiled lightly, before the young colt responded “I don’t mind, the more the merrier” which was further acknowledged by Daisy Song with a strong nod of her head, the sweet fragrance of her peach perfumes enveloping the other three. “Then it’s settled, let’s first sit and eat something, you two must be hungry after traveling here all the way from Canterlot” commanded Twilight and nopony protested, for they indeed could were all a little hungry and it was only the beginning of Hearts and Hooves day. Later Whatever Twilight or Spike had imagined, this meeting was unlike anything either of them could ever expect. The four of them hadn't been sitting at this place for more than five minutes before all hell broke loose, much to the purple duo's horror. “So, I use this much cute special mascara, a lot of it, and I think that it makes me look so pretty that I can outshine any mare! You saw it yourself didn’t you? I simply love being the center of everypony’s attention. Yes, I’m truly perfect don’t you think so? You’d better do, because my papa is a captain of royal guards.” On and on Daisy Song went, Spike's head growing steadily heavier as he continued to nod again and again, not even paying attention to a single word she said. How could his perception of this mare fail him so much? That he didn’t know but wished for nothing more than the end of this day, because Daisy was even more of a drama queen than Rarity ever was. Looking over at Twilight and how she managed with Charminghoof, he noticed that her expression mirrored his own, for that stallion, no matter what his name, was not charming at all. “And what do you think about that waitress over here, just look how her figure moves, how her eyes shine, that’s my type of the girl! She is like a divine goddess herself.” He showered the compliments but no matter how one were to look at that ‘divine beauty’, she was a fat mare with many wrinkles and definitely in her later years of life. A seasoned mare waitress indeed but not beautiful. However, every comment stabbed Twilight in the heart like a poisonous dagger, because she never considered herself to be pretty and hearing how a good looking stallion praised that waitress and totally ignored her, only added salt to the injury with each compliment spoken. Being a well mannered mare and not going to fail either princess, Twilight decided that it would be best to remain silent and concentrate on her food, occasionally agreeing with him, even if it meant that her mood would grow more sour with every passing second. Why In all of Equestria did he even talk to her like to some stallion was beyond her but she assumed it was her lack of attractiveness. Seeing her like that pained Spike, who felt the need to cheer her up somehow but how could he achieve it? He had no idea and thinking wasn’t exactly easy when somepony talked your ear off. “Oh and I do my mane twice a day to keep it in top shape, and also hooves must shine and I have a personal guard who is simply adorable. But enough about me, let’s talk about you shall we? You look like an adventurous type, I guess you prefer mares like me and not bookworms right?” The last comment caught Twilight’s attention however, she couldn’t rebuke her guest, after all, it was princess Celestia herself who invited Daisy Song to Ponyville and offending her would be similar with offending the captain of royal guards or even worse – princess Celestia herself. She decided to grit her teeth and remain calm however, what came next caught the alicorn princes totally off guard and it was Spike who managed this feat. Said dragon, who was at this time half listening to the rabble of the mare near him, registered some sort of question so he did the only thing any male would do in his place where somepony was chattering too much and you weren’t actually listening. He didn’t agree with Daisy Song in hope that she would shut up a little and thus said “I prefer the bookworms.” *Clang* came a loud sound from Twilight’s plate, as time seemed to stop for a full minute, this unusual response achieving several effects. Firstly, Twilight cheeks burned with a shade so red, she could be mistaken for a ripe tomato, her eyes cast down at the table, for it was the first genuine complement she had heard from anypony of opposite gender, even if it was Spike who said it… or maybe because it came from Spike. She wasn’t sure. Secondly, both Daisy and Charminghoof grimaced but that expression was quickly replaced with their usual happy one, as if nothing happened and they started to chat with each other. Lastly, Spike’s mouth opened and closed, unable to utter any more words. Should he say that he didn’t meant it? No, that would obviously upset Twi. Should he not say anything? What if Twilight starts to see too much to it being inexperienced in romance and all that stuff? Not that he minded.. –Wait what?! I do mind, she is my friend and… well… my friend! – He shouted in his own mind panicking, unable to even find a logical argument against himself. Glad for the scales on his cheeks, which hid any blush perfectly, Spike decided ultimately that he would talk with Twilight after they get rid of their guests to clear the awkwardness, hoping at the same time that this day would pass without any more troubles. His mind made up, he voiced his opinion to break the tense situation “Should we start sightseeing? I’m sure both of you are thrilled to see Ponyville!” Although he said it in cheerful voice, after seeing their guests in action, he was less than enthusiastic about this whole day. However, both of their guests nodded so the four of them decided to move onto next position in the schedule. ***Schedule plan No. 2 – Sightseeing*** The group moved through Ponyville slowly, with Twilight and Spike in the front acting as tour guides, while the mischievous duo walked silently behind them. However, they often exchanged glances with each other and whispered among themselves from time to time which looked to onlookers like flirting. “ Sooo, Charminghoof, what brings you here?” asked Daisy Song, as she fluttered her long eyelashes at the stallion who walked to her right, a wide grin on her face. “Wanted to see Ponyville, why?” replied Charminghoof calmly, his eyes traveling all around the unfamiliar place, occasionally looking at the things Twilight and Spike pointed at, while half listening to their conversation because a much more interesting one was going on with the mare near him. Something was off but he couldn’t exactly pinpoint what. “Why indeed. It’s not like either of us have any hidden plans other than enjoy this place is it?” replied Daisy to his question with another one of her own and with this indirect way she confirmed Charminghoof’s suspicion that there was obviously more to that mare than meet the eye. Who knew, maybe she would prove to be useful later, right now they were each probing for answers while giving a little piece of information at the same time… a game which both enjoyed. Smiling, the blue stallion decided for a more bold move, one that will skip the longer play because he didn’t knew how long this tour would last. “Indeed but pray tell me what those plans might be?” “I wonder. Maybe a little fun at the expense of others?” inquired Daisy, her figure catching attention of stallions who walked right into the lampposts or other objects much to their dates displeasure and delight of the brown mare. However this stallion with whom she spoke was different because he was not reacting like others…but she assumed he probably had different preferences. “I think the both of us will really enjoy our stay here don’t you agree?” Charminghoof replied as nasty smile adorned his muzzle and something about it captivated Daisy greatly, the very promise of causing chaos making her happy and this pony seemed to very far to achieve his goal. “It’s always more fun to play together” she responded with a false expression of thoughtfulness, hoping to form some sort of alliance and thankfully, Charminghoof did just what she wanted and took the bait. “Agreed, so what’s next?” “Watch and learn” whispered Daisy as she moved closer to the purple duo who seemed to be absorbed by each other’s company more than interested in their guests… too absorbed to Daisy’s liking which needed to change. “Spike, I was meaning to ask you, what do you think of Ponyville’s school?” inquired Daisy, as she moved forcefully in between Spike and Twilight, much to the displeasure of the former. However, being a gentledragon that he was, Spike decided to kindly answer her questions, after all, the mare seemed to behave herself out in the streets. “I think it’s a good place to…” he began cheerfully but Diasy’s raised hoof cut him short as she drew breath and began her tirade, much to Twilight’s shock and Charminghoof amusement. “I hate schools, when I was little, other fillies always made fun out of me, they uses to glue my mane to the table and throw my stuff out of the window.” She bitterly stated, tears forming in her eyes, which alarmed Spike who felt the need to cheer her up. “I’m sorry I…”, “No you aren’t sorry and you don’t understand, nopony understands what I went through! Other fillies would pick on me, especially guys, they always called me ugly! All males are like that!” she wailed, making Spike panic, for he was unable to come up with the way to do anything when Daisy’s mood changed this quick. He tried to somehow calm her down, however she was far from over. Looking at Twilight he also tried to seek some support but another wave of words ensued, cutting into his response. “You shouldn…”, “Don’t try to play nice, you males always hide your feelings and think of naughty stuff behind girl’s back. I bet you lust after princess Twilight all the time but never actually say anything nice to her and you don’t give her flowers from time to time to show your gratitude!” as she breathed hard, she suddenly rubbed her eyes, and any remains from the tears were gone as if they never were there in the first place. Smiling, Daisy looked at both Twilight and Spike and bowed her head “I’m sorry, I can get really emotional sometimes.” With that, she trotted happily back to Charminghoof while humming a happy tune, leaving the stunned duo with mixed feelings about that mare mental health. Spike looked over to Twilight, trying to come up with anything to say but no words were found. Thankfully to him, Twilight was as always very understanding and offered him a light nudge to the side. “Don’t worry, I know you are grateful to me, even without flowers” With that joke being made, she started to move forward, making Spike and others to follow her lead. Coming up to her side, the dragon rubbed nervously the back of his neck like he always had in habit. “Thanks, I know and uh…and I don’t think of naughty stuff.” - Not always anyway – He corrected himself in his thoughts. He knew that lust was bad but he couldn’t help himself. Twilight was a very attractive mare in his eyes and he got to live with her for a long, long time. While it was true that most of the time he didn’t look at her this way, there were moments when he did. But he felt no shame, he was a single male with many beautiful mares as his friends so it was only natural. “I know” whispered Twilight smiling lightly, as they continued their tour. Unknown to them, their guests had a conversation of their own going on. “This is your idea of fun? They seem closer together now.” said Charminghoof with clear displeasure that replaced his earlier amusement, earning a scowl form Daisy. “It’s not my fault, they know each other too well to provoke arguments and misunderstandings with some awkward words exchanged. We need to come up with more devious strategy.” replied the mare, her voice betraying both anger at failure and excitation that the fun will continue. Charminghoof smiled and couldn’t agree more with the feelings of his new companion. It will be a very pleasant day and very soon. Stiffing a small laugh, he looked at Daisy with a gleam in the eyes “Oh, leave it to me.” ***Schedule plan No. 3 – Dinner*** After they finished with their tour around Ponyville, Twilight decided that it was high time to eat dinner. Both she and Spike were ever so thankful that half of the day was behind them and they could finally relax in fancy restaurant. The duo of ponies who were visiting were not only a handful but outright annoying. Truth be told, Twilight began suspect if maybe it was princess Celestia way to provide another lesson about friendship but no matter how hard she analyzed the strange behavior of these two, she simply couldn’t come up with anything. Could it really be possible that they weren’t acting or doing it on purpose? Sighing from exhaustion, she hoped that maybe at least this dinner would be in peace but even that wish was short lived when Charminghoof, during casual his conversation with Spike, started quite an uncomfortable topic. “So, tell me Spike, being a lady killer that you are, I’m sure you could get any mare in Ponyville right?” said the stallion with disarming smile as he nabbed at his food, while Daisy sat quietly and poked her salad with her hoof and then added ketchup in such a manner to make a happy face. Spike on the other hoof, stiffened at the question asked towards him and then laughed sheepishly. Being humble as always, he tried to not go into that conversation too deep so his response was as follows. “Not at all, I’m not THAT good.” “I’m sure you are! I have heard even in Canterlot, how a purple dragon from Ponyville got a certain white unicorn to do anything for him, and I mean a-n-y-t-h-i-n-g.” said Charminghoof as he patted Spike on the shoulder in a gesture of respectful male acknowledgment of Spike’s accomplishment. Twilight however, couldn’t take this conversation much longer, for Rarity was her friend and she wouldn’t let anypony talk about her like she was a prey for males! “Rarity isn’t like that Charminghoof and she is ONLY a friend to Spike, nothing more.” Smiling wider that she bit on his bait, Charminghoof turned to her, and something about this wicked expression send shivers down her spine. “My, my, you are quite a marenizer Spike, it seems you even managed to make princess Twilight jealous of you.” Once again, he patted Spike’s shoulder, whose eyes bulged out at that bold proclamation. Not that he didn’t enjoy a talk between males but what in all of Equestria was this stallion thinking? If he gets Twilight mad, she would probably blow this place up! However, Charminghoof was far from over “You must have some strong feelings for Spike, Princess Twilight.” Twilight, who was on the verge of shutting the stallion up any moment now, choked at the last comment and blushed madly, for never did she even consider… never thought of Spike in that manner or any male she ever met. Listening to this stallion, Twilight got more and more agitated, making her lose her mind but that last sentence derailed her completely from her calm and collected self, so she did the only thing she could, she denied what Charminghoof said “I-I don’t have any feelings like that!” Shouting these words loud and clear, silence enveloped their table, with only Daisy still poking at her salad as if it held some greater mystery and then adding mayonnaise. Charminghoof shrugged only, as if nothing happened and bowed his head down in sincere apology, or at least it looked like one “I understand, I’m sorry I jumped into such conclusion” Even as he spoke those words, a hidden grin showed itself but neither Twilight nor Spike noticed it, being absorbed with their own emotions raging inside their hearts. Casting a glance at Daisy, he noticed her expression distorting slightly, hints that she felt the same enjoyment as he even if she seemed to pay more attention to her salad than current events. Spike on the other hoof…. The dragon sat there paralyzed, his heart shattering into million pieces. It hurt but he didn’t know why it did. Logically, there was nothing of romantic intent between Twilight and him and they lived for years in the library! He even wanted her to go and date somepony today but… was he wrong? – Did I overlook my own feelings? – No matter how many times he asked that phrase in his head, no answer ever came. All that was in his heart was confusion and pain and he felt like as if he awoke in a dark maze with a broken leg. Confusion he could untangle with time but pain? It was something he didn’t want to feel, he didn’t want his heart to bleed like this. Similar situation happened once before, when he realized that no matter how hard he will try, Rarity will never want him because she preferred fashionable stallions which were like a princes. Clenching his jaw, he decided to take it like an adult dragon, no tears…at least for now. Besides, he didn’t even know what should he cry about in the first place. At the same time, Twilight eyed Spike worriedly. She didn’t mean to say those harsh words but then why should she say anything else? She didn’t like Spike that way, right? – I mean, he was always there for me, always supporting me, but we are only friends…- For the first time in her life, Twilight felt that the phrase friend was hollow…empty and meaningless. She didn’t understand, she was bad at romance, at dating and she was fully aware of it. Books were her support, a way to take on any problem that showed up and if a way out of something wasn’t found in her tomes, she felt too unsure to even move forward. This territory called love she avoided at any cost so when she found herself thrown into it like this, it left her afraid, exposed and worst of all…clueless. With one pair which tried to work out their complicated feelings and one pair that enjoyed the whole thing, the rest of the dinner proceeded in complete silence…and the day was still not over. ***Schedule plan No. 4 – Movie*** Ponyville cinema was one of the newest buildings which was finished exactly one year ago and was now a very popular spot for all kind of ponies. On Hearts and Hooves day however, the place seemed overcrowded and the tickets were impossible to get without prior reservations. However, being a princess had its perks, for this new cinema had a private room constructed for both princess Celestia and Luna, and Twilight could also use it if she desired. The plan was to watch a simple romantic comedy, an activity which couldn’t go wrong but two other ponies were far more creative in their scheming. Both Charminghoof and Daisy Song knew well that romantic comedy could mend their earlier mischief so, being a very mindful of Spike and Twilight current mood, they switched the movies. As far as Twilight and Spike knew, they were supposed to watch ‘You’ve got letter’, a movie about two rival bookstore owners who hated each other but unknown to them, they flirt with each other via letters, not knowing who the anonymous correspondent is. Now instead of that romantic comedy, they would watch a movie by the title of… “Book burning?” asked Twilight, as she read the ominous letters on the screen, a title unknown to her at all. Looking at Spike, she wanted to ask of him to see why the film got changed but upon noticing his expression she decided to keep quiet. Besides if the film had books in it, then it would be okay she guessed. However, as she looked at Spike with the corner of her eye, she grew worried. –I didn’t meant to hurt your feelings… – she wanted to say but those words just couldn’t come out of her mouth, because no matter how she tried she could either say that she likes him in THAT way, or that she doesn’t. –What would he think if I said that I do? How would everything change? Would it be bad anyway? Wait what you are thinking about?! – Her thoughts were soon interrupted as the movie played and lights went out, enveloping the pair in complete darkness… and then, the horror began. Twilight Sparkle never was scared of ghosts, she knew them to be nothing more than an effect of imagination because there was no scientific proof of their existence. However, ‘Book burning’ was a different kind of horror, one that made fear grip at her spine with its icy cold hands. Feeling smaller and smaller as the horror unfolded before her eyes, she glued herself to Spike, landing on his lap, much to the dragon bewilderment, but what was he to do? He couldn’t drop her on the ground, not when she trembled like a jelly, trying to suffocate him with her forelegs firmly wrapped around his neck. Honestly, Spike didn’t know what made her so scared. The whole movie was boring. The effects were cheap and the story was as simple as it can get: A serial murderer goes around small town and burns his victims on the pile of books and the main heroine, a librarian, tries to stop him and save the precious tomes of knowledge…boring really. Watching the scene from a higher row, Charminghoof rolled his eyes at Twilight’s behavior. The stallion always imagined that the princess and the element of magic was more brave than this. Had he made a miscalculation and overestimated her? “Is she for real?” Asked Charminghoof, disbelief clearly painted in his eyes, but his partner in crime could only nod her head, as Daisy was too engulfed by the movie to even respond, not that she could with her mouth full of delicious popcorn. Down below, the movie continued to play, evoking more and more whimpers from poor Twilight as it progressed. Deciding that this cannot continue any longer, Spike gently tapped her cheek with his finger, making her look at him startled, and away from the scary things on the screen. Realizing her position, Twilight stiffened, as shade of crimson colored her features. As expected, she began to frantically struggle to get free, but Spike held her firmly in his arms until she calmed down. Still blushing heavily, she stopped her movements, looking at Spike with full set of question in her eyes, ready to be launched any second. However, the closeness made her unable to voice them out and that gave Spike time to think. Taking full advantage of it, Spike’s mouth moved closer to her ear and he whispered quietly “I’m sorry…” which made the questions in Twilight’s mind to pile up so much that she forgot totally of the embarrassing position she was in. The mare didn’t know what he was sorry about but she was determined to find out. “What for?” she whispered back, her earlier embarrassment totally replaced by curiosity, however she did not loosen her hold on his neck. “For the time when I was chasing after Rarity and left you all alone in the library” came out his honest response and Twilight couldn’t help but be moved by the sincerity in his voice. After what she said at the restaurant, he still thought of her more than about himself and it melted her heart. With a little teary expression, her hoof came up and stroked the scales on his cheek gently, her whispering voice trembling and heart throbbing for reasons unknown to her. “Don’t be, I never held It against you.” A shake of his head made her retract her foreleg back to her side “But I still abandoned you…” “You did it out of love for somepony else. You aren’t a bird in a cage Spike” she replied, her cheek coming in contact with his scaly chest, the strong beating of his heart calming her and the position preventing him from seeing her expression. She was always little hurt when he left her for Rarity in the past and she hated her own cowardice which prevented her to tell the younger Spike, that Rarity doesn’t feel the same towards him and never will. “I promise, I won’t do it ever again” said Spike strongly, his claws squeezing her back, pushing her closer into him as if he were afraid that she could slip away from his life never to return again. Her heart skipping a beat, she wished for nothing more than to immerse herself in this moment however, she couldn’t let him make this promise. “And if you fall in love with somepony?”she whispered to him softly, expecting him to remain silent or deny that he won’t. Spike didn’t do any of those, he only chuckled and then told her the words that made her feel very strange in her heart. “I’ll think about it when I do Twi. My first priority was always to stay by your side. Do you remember your usual schedule? Can you say it from memory?” as the question was issued, the mare looked up to him, her eyes curious and moist but thankfully he didn’t seem to notice them in the dim light of the cinema. “Wake up at seven, open library, research…” she started to say quietly but Spike’s claw on her lips stopped her from going further. Smiling, he came closer to her ear gain and started to whisper again. “My schedule is the same as yours, but I see it a little different. Wake up ten minutes before Twilight, prepare her favorite tea and breakfast so she doesn’t go on an empty stomach, do my chores for her and complete any request she has for me, cook dinner for both of us… do you see the difference?” when he stopped Twilight didn’t need to say either yes or no. She understood him perfectly and how he was always there to take care of her like a guardian angel. All those years he stayed by her side being the best friend ever. He was honest, loyal, generous, kind and could make her laugh. If friendship was magic then he was the best example of it…there was only one thing left to do now. “I-I’m sorry for what I said earlier…” her voice trembled as she stuttered, recalling those hurtful words of hers but it felt better to say it, a great burden lifted. It was then that her eyes truly opened, how important her assistant was to her… and that he was closer to her than anypony could ever get. He was irreplaceable and she loved him. –Love? Do I love Spike as more than friend? Could I be with him?- she asked herself and while her mind denied it as illogical, her heart started beating faster every time she thought over this possibility, her answer becoming clearer and clearer to her. Just as she was about to say more to him, anything that might have a meaning, the magical moment ended when an overly happy music started to play and credits rolled on the screen. It surprised Twilight so much that she jumped up a little and landed at the floor near Spike on all fours, her horn glowing as if she were expecting an attack. “Why so jumpy Twi?” asked Spike jokingly as he got up and smiled widely, trying to hold back his laughter at the mare actions. The frown on her face told him that she was far from amused at the interruption so he decided to say one more thing to her. Walking past her, he whispered to her ear “I’m not angry at you anymore” Those words sent electric jolts through her whole body but when she turned to regard Spike, he only grinned widely “We should continue our schedule… I’m pretty sure the movie didn’t change by itself. Come on, let’s go!” With that, he started to calmly walk towards exit, and Twilight couldn’t help but smile and walk after him however, before exiting, she cast one last glance at the cinema screen and trembled – I’m going to have nightmares tonight. – ***Schedule plan No. 5 – Festival*** The decorations in Ponyville were each time getting better and better, with Rarity, Trenderhoof, Pinkie and Cheese Sandwich doing their best to made it into most wonderful day ever. Each year, the four of them worked really hard to make it as enjoyable to everypony as it could be, and by now they could be only outshined by the Crystal Empire celebration, but the goddess of love ruled there so it was hardly possible to compete with her city. This year, many festival stands were placed along the streets, while at the same time many colorful lights flashed all around. The balloons in the shapes of hearts floated lazily all over the place, while happy couples enjoyed their time. In that sweet atmosphere, there was nopony who would be able to frown…almost nopony. “Great job, truly great, now not only they made up but they also seem to be even closer than before!” complained Daisy Song, as she sipped her drink, while looking at the purple duo who chattered freely while smiling at each other…enjoying their time. “Oh give me a break, I actually tried to do something while YOU stuffed yourself with popcorn” harshly replied Charminghoof, while a deep frown adorned his face. Still, he wouldn’t yield, this day was far from over and he will make sure that ultimately whey will win. “Fine, guess it’s my turn to show you how it’s done” said Daisy and just on time, as she saw Spike going to a shooting range stand, where plush toys could be won. He chatted with the owner and with Twilight for some time, while pointing his claw at one toy which resembles Starswirl the Bearded. It made Daisy wonder if the game was fun. Seeing the same thing, Charminghoof smiled, a devious idea forming quickly in his evil mind. “Perfect. See that Daisy? Go and made him miss!” ordered the stallion, while pushing Daisy forward who objected strongly by drilling her hooves into the ground. “And how am I supposed to do that?” she asked, while opposing with all her might. Unsurprisingly, the mare had no way to stop, because he was being pushed closer and closer towards the stand with that annoying stallion right behind her! “I don’t know, loose balance or something!” said Charminghoof through gritted teeth and it was then that he fell over, for Daisy got just the right idea how to make Spike loose and therefore quickly changed her mind. At the same time, Spike looked at the small toy riffle, which would shoot a wooden bullet. The goal was to topple some cups over with precise aiming but he might have overestimated himself a little. The distance was quite far and he could miss easily, not to mention the riffle was designed for ponies not dragons. Still, he wanted to make Twilight happy and the plush would be the perfect way to do this. He positioned himself and aimed, when another pony did the same to his left. Looking over to the side, Spike saw that Daisy was doing exactly the same thing as him and the dragon couldn’t help but think hard just what was that mare planning again. From the start of this day, their guests seemed to do everything in their might to ruin this meeting but the reason why was still unknown to him. Not that it mattered right now. Spike looked at the target, focusing fully at his task and prepared to push the trigger at the right moment, his eyes narrowing and then, he felt a shove from the right as Daisy toppled over him, making both of them fire their rifles accidentally. Landing heavily with a thud on the ground, he glared at Daisy and was about to yell at her, dragon code or not, but then, a loud cheer interrupted him. Looking up, Spike saw what happened and his mouth opened in disbelief. Somehow, by a dumb luck or some divine intervention, they both scored their targets, earning applause from everypony nearby. The stand owner whistled at the amazing skill and smiled at them both, while giving them two plush toys. Spike received Starswirl the Bearded, much to his delight, while Daisy got… “They really make those?” she said in disbelief and Spike couldn’t help but chuckle. If any plush toy suited that mare, then this one was perfect because the mare caused indeed a lot of chaos. Getting up, he helped her to stand up which she accepted reluctantly while still eyeing the toy and he left for Twilight who still made loud noise with her hooves. “That was amazing Spike!” she cheered and although Spike wanted to correct her that having dumb luck was hardly amazing, he didn’t want to ruin the moment. Besides seeing her like this made him happy so it was all alright. Smiling sheepishly, he offered her the plush toy slowly, feeling hotter than usual under the scales and Twilight gratefully accepted it while whispering a quiet “thank you” At the same time, on the side far to the left, Daisy was still closely examining the Discord plush when Charminghoof came up to her, his expression hardly amused. “How did you manage to fail this?” With a shrug, Daisy looked back at him, her face distorting into frown. It was indeed the dumbest failure ever but truthfully she didn’t care when there was even better plan on her mind. Throwing the plush at Charminghoof, who barely caught it with his mouth by the tail, she went past him while muttering “It’s not over yet. We can still ruin it, come with me.” She began to turn to the left, however both Twilight and Spike came up to them quickly, their faces showing that they planned something. Looking from the dragon to the mare, the troublemaker duo secretly exchanged worried looks. Was it possible that they decided to confront them about this day? “And where do you think you are going?” asked Spike, his expression devoid of any clues of what he might be thinking, making both Charminghoof and Daisy Song sweat a little. However, much to their luck, Twilight decided to step in. “The fireworks display should start soon, don’t wander too far away so we won’t have to search for you two, okay?” she warned, before turning towards the bigger crowd which gathered in the market place and vanishing with Spike inside that mass of ponies. Unknown to them, Daisy grinned at Charminghoof, sending shivers down his spine. He knew that she had some kind of plan to ruin this fair, and he was sure to love it! ***Schedule plan No. 6 – Fireworks*** Inside the crowd, Twilight felt Spike’s claw on her back as they navigated between various ponies while trying hard to stay together. Due to the fair getting better and better every year there were a lot of visitors. Actually, Twilight could swear that the number of Ponyville residents tripled, seeing as she didn’t recognize most of the faces. With the corner of her eye, she managed to catch glimpse of Pinkie and Cheese but then again, the duo was so loud and lively together that they basically were a walking party of two. In this big crowd, she even managed to see something which resembled a fancy dress, meaning that Rarity was also present, probably with Trenderhoof by her side. Twilight was glad for her friend that she finally managed to find her special someponya and at the same time, her heart fluttered when she thought that Spike was now her –Well, not exactly mine but…- All of it still confused her. She felt strangely weak in his company, her heart started to beat faster but was it really a root of feelings or was it her own mind and heart playing tricks on her? Sighing, she wished that she had more experience with romance or for a book that would solve those mysterious feelings which she feared to name. Spike, who was standing near her, noticed Twilight’s sigh and decided to inquire about it, wondering just what was going through her mind. “You okay Twi?” She nearly jumped up when he called out to her. In his eyes, she was really jumpy today, which made him sure that something was indeed bothering her. Spike knew her enough to read her like one of many books in the library, so he decided to take the burden out of her by simply initiating a talk. “I had a lot of fun today… I mean, it was good to see all of Ponyville, watch a good movie and attend the festival don’t you think so?” he asked and noticed her clouded expression. Smiling inside his heart, he knew that he managed to make her recall all today’s events so he proceeded further “Is something bothering you Twi?” A simple question, but it was enough to make Twilight look at him and stare into those green eyes of his as if seeking for answers. What he saw in her purple ones was confusion and he understood exactly what she was feeling because Spike once saw this expression. It was in his reflection in the mirror, when he began to question his feelings for Rarity for the first time. He wished that he could give Twilight answers but… it was something that she had to determine on her own and Spike knew that better than anypony. Thankfully, being talkative like always, the mare beside him didn’t make him wait for too long in this uncomfortable silence. “Its….Just who we are to each other Spike?” she asked, her eyebrows knitted together, determination to find the answer and ease her aching heart clearly painted on her fair features. Nearly at the same time, riding a Ferris Wheel an attraction assembled together just for the Hearts and Hooves day, both Charminghoof and Daisy Song were still scheming against Twilight and Spike, determined to make this day worse for the duo. “Just what do you want to do up here?” asked Charminghoof while wondering what exactly could Daisy do from such a height. The mare said that it would be fun and that she would make the firework display even better but those were ambiguous answers at best. Truthfully, he grew agitated with his companion and decided to let her know that. “Can’t you just answer me?” he said once again, this time more demanding than before, because all of today’s frustration finally caught up to him and Charminghoof had enough failures for today. They tried over and over but somehow the dragon and alicorn managed to withstand all of it and grow even closer! “Don’t you like surprises?” asked Daisy, while eating cotton candy that she got along the way which further unnerved the stallion, especially her lack of seriousness. The mare seemed to always eat something and not care about the plan at all! She was too uncaring about everything and he decided to let her know that, which meant no more Mr. nice colt. “I hate surprises and fun! I demand action and you should focus on creating a disaster for those two and not stuffing yourself again!” he scolded, fuming with anger, all piled up anger finally going to the surface. However, the mare before his eyes was all but offended. “Oh? At least I enjoy myself while trying to mess things up. Why don’t you chill out? Besides why so bitter and out of love?” she said and that has done it for Charminghoof, whose teeth clenched and gritted in anger. “You have no idea how much out of love I am…” came out his reply while his voice distorted and little green sparks began to fly around him. However, unknown to them, just down below the attraction, a cross-eyed, bluish-grey Pegasus was flying nearby and as luck had it, she collided with control panel. Landing with a thud on the ground, Derpy rubbed her head and looked up as the Ferris Wheel shook violently before her eyes. Up in the compartment, Charminghoof lost his balance at the sudden stop, as he flew forward, colliding with the mare before him. It took the duo one second to get over the shock, second to realize their lips had connected, and another one to jump back, both of their eyes narrowed with displeasure and disgust at each other as energy swirled and buzzed around them. Charminghoof glowed with green aura, his blue coat turning black and mane into teal, his eyes to green and more snake like, as female growl escaped his… her lips, for the queen of changelings, Chrysalis, stood tall and mighty, and glared venomously at the one who dared to take the advantage of her in such a manner. However, her anger was short lived as the individual known as Daisy Song stretched to all sides and grew significantly taller with a poof of white smoke and nopony other than the mischievous spirit of chaos materialized before her while grinning widely. Both set of eyes stared at each other in confusion, unable to comprehend what exactly was going on as the first firework shoot high up the sky, lightening it with many shades of colorful sparks meaning they missed their last chance. Down at the market plaza, Twilight awaited the solution to her question impatiently however, Spike had different kind of answer to her than simple words. Coming closer, he wrapped her in tight hug, startling her and softly said “Does giving it a name really matters?” Hearing his soft heartbeat, Twilight relaxed gradually in the warmth of his embrace flowing into her, a little smile flourishing on her soft lips. “I guess not” Staying like that, not minding the crowd, the duo looked up at the sky when the first firework cut through the night sky and exploded in the myriad of colors so beautiful that a collective gasp of amazement could be heard from everypony around. Looking at this magnificent display, Spike thought that this year they actually might outdo the Crystal Empire but truthfully, it didn’t matter to him when somepony more beautiful than fireworks on the night sky was close to him, her heartbeat synchronizing with his own. Outside of the gathering of other ponies, a duo unlike any other walked together…or rather the first walked and the second skated on the solid ground with his bare legs while holding a cotton candy in one hand. “Stop following me already!” she yelled once again to him, however, he rarely listened to others let alone to his better judgment. “Make it quick then but whatever you say now, won’t change anything.” she replied coldly, her voice dripping with anger and a hint of sadness mixed in all of this. Then she said those magical words… “You have lost your mind.” concluded Chrysalis much to Discord’s content because he simply adored hearing when others praised him in this way. Bowing, he smiled out to her and before she had any chance to reply again, he hastily added. “I’m just glad that I didn’t kiss a stallion… that disguise wasn’t my best idea.” this response of his made Chrysalis anger quickly return, for the whole incident was something she wished to forget as soon as possible and this idiot didn’t help matters. “NOTHING happened!.” she denied it harshly with threatening words and it might have worked if the one she spoke them to was anypony but Discord. Continuing to eat his cotton candy with delight like a youngster, the Draconequus shrugged before replying. “Say whatever you want… another date next year Chrysy?” as those words reached her ears, her lips drew a tight line on her mouth. Once again reaffirming her belief that she was indeed speaking with a mad creature, she turned on her hoof and started trotting away but not before casting one curious glance behind her to see if he would follow her again. Thankfully to her, he did no such thing, only waved his lion paw while smiling smugly which annoyed her even more. When she finally went away, Discord took out a mirror and looked at his reflection while saying happily “Yep, still got it!” ***14-th – Golden Oak Library*** Going through the door, feeling her legs aching in places she never thought existed, Twilight Sparkle was all too glad to finally be home. She and Spike frantically looked all around for the duo that caused them so much trouble today but in the end, Daisy came up to them and assured the pair that she and Charminghoof will go to Ponyville station and return back to Canterlot now. In the end, she was nice enough to thank them for a time well spent so Twilight was glad to fulfill the task that Celestia gave her, even if it was tiresome. “You alright?” came Spike’s voice as he put a cup of hot chocolate before her, the only thing that she could think about that would make her feel relaxed after so many new experiences. “Yeah, but today sure was tiring” she said while smiling but then her expression changed to a light frown. Alarmed, Spike sat beside her looking at her worriedly, his eyes asking for answer is something happened. “In the end, I still didn’t go on a real date on Hearts and Hooves day” explained Twilight, and Spike laughed a little upon hearing those words, earning a puzzled stare from her. Deciding to elaborate, he chuckled once again and began to cheer her up like he always did. “What are you saying Twi? Weren’t we on a date today?” Spike replied lightly and it was partially true, for while they never said it would be one, she couldn’t help but smile widely. No matter how she looked at it, it was indeed a date, with a nice walk, dinner, movie, festival and fireworks. So many activities today, it was as if she was getting payback for all those years she sat at home with her nose buried in her books. “You're right.” She agreed but then a yawn escaped her lips. Stretching her body, she finished the chocolate and handed the cup to Spike. Normally, she would wash it herself but she was so dead tired that nothing else but a warm bed was on her mind and she decided to let him know that “I’m tired and tomorrow we still have so many things to do. See you in the morning Spike and…thanks for the date.” With that, she trotted up the stairs, straight to her bedroom, leaving one purple dragon, sitting on a sofa while holding an empty cup, smiling like an idiot. Shaking his head left and right, Spike also got up, washed the single cup and went to his own room to get some well deserved rest. Later that night, up the stairs, Twilight Sparkle turned from side to side in her bed, unable to fall asleep. The dark atmosphere and books scattered about the room, reminded her all too clearly about the movie she watched, making her afraid once again. Still, she decided to be a mature mare and reasoned with her mind. –Pull yourself together Twilight, that was only a movie, there is no such thing as mass murderer who burns ponies and their precious books… – Just as she was thinking that, one of many branches of their tree that swayed on the wind, hit at the window, making Twilight cover her head with blanket and tremble under it. She hadn't felt like that since she was a filly, when her brother would scare her with some stories. Back then, she would run to her parents and jump into their bed or otherwise she would be unable to get any sleep at all. However, her parents were not in the library and the only other inhabitant was Spike and she was NOT going into his bed... Her opposition didn't hold for too long upon a sudden shadow of a figure behind the window when she looked at that direction which made her heart go at faster rate and quickly change her stubborn mind. Grabbing her covers, she ran out of her room at alarming speed, down the stairs and stopped only before she stood before the door to Spike’s bedroom, unsure if she should knock or simply barge in. Her dilemma was resolved, when the doors opened and a very tired dragon stood in them while rubbing his eyes. “Twilight? Why are you running on the stairs in the middle of the night?” Shifting uncomfortably from side to side, the mare looked down, a heavy blush adorning her muzzle as she mumbled a barely heard reply. Impatiently, Spike tapped his claw on the door frame and asked “What?” “I-couldn’t-sleep.” once again mumbled Twilight, and Spike finally got what it was all about. Growing hot under his scales, he matched her nervous moves perfectly but nonetheless, he moved to the side giving her a sign that he doesn’t mind her idea. As she quietly entered the room, Spike closed the doors behind her and laid down on his bed, Twilight following suit, claiming it’s opposite end for herself with her back turned to him. To ease the awkward situation, Spike decided to lighten the mood with a little joke “You know…isn't going to the same bed a little too far for our first date?” Turning to face him, Twilight looked bewildered into his amused eyes and visibly relaxed upon noticing that he was just poking fun at the whole situation. Feeling tiredness once again returning, she closed her eyes, however the dragon wouldn’t let her sleep so easily. “I mean, how long has it been since we slept in the same room?” Twilight tried to pretend to sleep, hoping that Spike would drop the subject upon noticing how tired and unresponsive she was but her dragon assistant could sometimes be very dense when it came to such stuff. Without any clue, he continued talking while looking at the ceiling “I would never have guessed that we would go on a date like this. It really…” “Oh that reminds me of something Spike.” cut him Twilight in mid sentence while groggily staring at the dragon, who turned his eyes from ceiling to met her purple ones. “Reminds you wha…?” he began to ask but before he could finish, Twilight kissed him lightly on the lips, paralyzing the unsuspecting dragon completely, taking him off guard. It was for a second but it was enough to finally shut him up but Twilight being her usual self, decided that clarification was in order. “A date and a good night kiss. Sweet dreams Spike.” she whispered, and nuzzled closer to him, putting her head on his chest and quickly falling asleep while listening to his heartbeat. As for Spike, he laid there petrified, eyes wide from shock and his mind blank with only one thought floating at the edge of his consciousness –Wow… – ***Canterlot*** Back in the capital of Equestria, two pairs of hooves moved swiftly through corridor as both royal princesses were going in the direction of one specific room where the most unusual guest resided. The two pairs of eyes stared blankly ahead as they came through the door, to be greeted with chaos in its purest form and the one responsible for it was flying lazily through the air while pulling out petals from a flower, an enormous mountain of similar treated plants pilled to his right. Disregarding the sight for now, Princess Luna came forward and announced loudly “Okay Discord, where is it?” “Where is what?” he replied, while continuing to pull off petals from yet another flower, giving both sisters the feeling that he wasn’t fully listening… or was he ever listening at all? “My royal seal, the one that I use to sign up my letters to…” Princess Celestia started to explain but the draconequus waved his eagle talon and the object in question materialized out of thin air, hitting Celestia in the head. “Found it lying around, you really should look where you toss your toys” said Discord as he sighed and looked through the window, small hearts flying all around him which unsettled both sisters even further than before. Obviously something was going through his head, some mad scheme probably. “Why do I get the feeling that he did something behind our backs?” whispered Luna to her older sister while narrowing her eyes suspiciously, deciding to get the information straight from the source. “And where were you all day anyway? And…why do you smell of peaches? Are those...my perfumes?” she inquired, for it was indeed strange that Discord didn’t try to ruin Hearts and Hooves day in some way. Usually, whenever a holiday came by, he would start doing as many mad pranks as possible and it took the duo of princesses a lot of effort to restrain him. Not to mention this sweet fragrance was unsettling. His answer however, left both of them slack jawed as he looked with heart shaped eyes at them and uttered one single phrase, one they knew to be true because Discord didn’t lie, he simply omitted all the truth. “I was on a date, you should try it sometimes or do you plan to stay pure another millennium? Oh and as for the flowers, I borrowed some from royal garden, hope you don't mind?” ***Changeling palace*** Deep inside the dark room, where little light shone, on a dark red sofa laid the Changeling Queen, displeasure painted all over her features. The plan to get revenge on Twilight Sparkle by making her assistant look bad to everyone in Ponyville ended up in complete disaster. “Stupid Hearts and Hooves day, stupid dragon, stupid alicorn and stupid Discord.” she muttered to herself over and over, but her frustration seemed to be never ending. Her lips still felt that strange sensation of unexpected kiss which angered Chrysalis even more. Two of her guards exchanged worried looks, neither willing to go closer and ask her if she needed anything in fear of being blasted with her magic. Unfortunately for them, their queen turned her look in their direction, got out of her sofa, walked closer and yelled “Out of my sight!” The guards were all to happy to oblige, as they scrambled frantically out of the room in a hurry and fear, leaving Chrysalis alone with her thoughts. Taking a deep breath, she turned around and once again laid down while muttering curses under her breath. With the corner of her eye however, she saw a small object, a plush toy resembling Discord, the one that he won by accident and threw at her. Levitating the object closer, she eyed it and wanted to blast it away as far as possible but as she readied her magic, ultimately she decided to leave the toy as souvenir. Putting it closer to her chest, she once again began muttering to herself but this time a certain Draconequus was the main object of her foul mouth. “Stupid Discord” and with that she feel content, the burning sensation still on her dark lips still lingering, as she fell into deep slumber where in her dreams certain spirit of chaos was annoying her further. Fin...or is it?
