> The Offspring Story Book > by The Lion Infinity > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- > Chapter One: Signs... > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- "The night sky seems calm. Even with all this chaos inside...," said the gray mare, leaning against a door staring out a window in her bedroom. She was tired. Tired of running but, she had to hold on for a little while longer...for the children. Khale was a young mare. She was kind and always wanted to help other ponies in a time of need. The orphanage she ran with her friend was the perfect way to support her village. She loved her work, she loved the children. Although, her love would be tested, by the end of this story she would be faced with the ultimate decision. The door pulsed behind her. She knew what it was, she wasn't sure if she could fight any longer though. It was cold that Hearth Warming Eve but, the door...It was warm, relaxing. She almost lost herself in false security. "No! No, I will not fall for that!" Khale scrambled away from the door. On the other side a loud banging noise could be heard. It got louder and louder. Khale was frozen with fear. She had run out of places to hide. She backed away from the door slowly as it began to give way. The hinges creaked with each push. The wood groaned and splintered. The banging on the door was relentless. Khales body shook every time contact was made with the outside force behind the door."Stop it! Just stop already!" kale yelled helplessly at the entity destroying the door."I said-" she stopped mid sentence. The banging had stopped. Khale let out a shaky breath. The room was finally silent. The air was freezing cold. The warmth the darkness brought was overwhelming. Khale knew that it was strong, tempting and seductive. She had to keep her sanity, for the children...for everyone."It's too hard...I can't...I can't do this anymore...," Khale wept as she fell to the ground. She whimpered, curling into a ball on the freezing floor. Her tears fell slowy down her face, the icy liquid made her shiver. Khale slowly turned her gaze back to the damaged door. She could feel it, it was only a matter of time. She could make a stand. She could fight back. Could she? The door opened slowly. Black oily tendrils crept through. They caressed the floors surface. The warmth of the darkness radiated like the sun. It tickled the frightened mars coat with whispers of promises. Soon, the darkness engulfed the room, in a inky black blanket. Khale closed her eyes, hoping to shut the sight out. She tried to fight, she tried to run. She wanted to save every pony but, she couldn't. She could feel the tendrils tear into her skin, the entered effortlessly. Small stings where all she felt as they entered her body. She could feel the tendrils envade her, she whimpered as they entered her veins. They twirled inside her bones and squirmed under her skin."Please...enough...," Khale rasped, her energy had been stolen by the dark entity. She closed her eyes one last time. The tendrils enveloped her entire body in a loving, crushing embrace. Then, darkness... "Khale...! Khale....!" a muffled voice called out," Wake up already! The kids are waiting!" Khale slowly opened her eyes to her friend Sweetie. They both ran the orphanage together for their village. Because of the war, some families were torn apart, ponies were orphaned. Khale and Sweetie took it upon themselves to start a foster home to help ponies that didn't have a home, find one," Sorry...I was having a weird dream...Oh no!" Khale yelled. "Your damn right oh no! The meet and greet is about to began and your still in bed!" Sweetie exclaimed. "Look, I gave you a little more time to sleep because you weren't feeling well," Sweetie said walking over to the drapes and pulling them open,"...but you can't sleep here forever. Hurry up! I'll keep everyone calm...*sigh* Feels like only yesterday we were the ones that needed homes..." A sad smile appeared on Sweeties face. Khale began to reach out and hug Sweetie but, she turned away an headed for the door. "I know it was hard Sweetie, thats why we started this place up. I'l get ready and, sorry about sleeping in like that. That never happens," Khale said, scratching the back of her head in embarrassment. "Don't worry Khale, when your flat on your plot i'll be there to pick ya back up," Sweetie smiled brightly and left Khale to herself. Outside the door she could hear Sweetie yelling at the kids to stop running in the hall. " *sigh* What a strange dream...thats the third time so far. It wasn't scary, it was..." Khale got a shiver down her spine. She decided to forget about the dream and began to get ready. Today, she would have to say goodbye to some of the ponies she grew to love. She cherished the children, like they were her own but, there has to be a time when they must find a real family...One that can provide for them. A family thats right for them... Khale made her way down the stairs when she finished getting ready. She wore her sun dress today. It was hoof stitched by her grand mother. The mint green dress was accented with gold trimmings, and silver tulips were patterned around it. She wore her fiery orange mane in a bun held together by two jade butterfly clamps. Khale wanted to look presentable for todays adoption and, this was only one out of the two nicest outfits she had. She always wore them when 'certain' ponies would be present. There guest today would be a mix of parents looking for a child, and Canterlot ponies rating them. It was a process that she thought was a little demeaning. The children had to look there best and so did she but, they had to do a good job of presenting the children. It made her feel like it was an acution and not an adoption. Her and Sweetie agreed that the only thing that was important in these situations is that the children would always be comfortable and the future parents are suitable. Khale made her way at the end of the stair case. The children were all lined up and dressed appropriately." Alright my little ponies, it's that time again. You all look so very nice this morning...," Khale smiled warmly at all the children. They gave there own greetings and gestures of approval. "Where were you! I was waiting for this whole time! I needed help with my bow again...!" a small sea green filly yelled aloud to Khale. She had on a frilly white dress with a bright pink bow in her terra cotta mane. "Jo, i'm sorry...I've seem to have slept a little longer than I wanted to. Oh, and Baker honey. I'm very sorry for missing your breakfast, I haven't been showing you all the attention you deserve lately. I promise, that when today is over i'll make sure I have a small gift for each of you," Khale smiled as she gained there approval of that idea. She loved making them happy. She wasn't sure why her sleeping was getting in the way of that but, Khale was determined not to let that interfere anymore. An older colt huffed," Yeah sure, we all know once some of us get adopted that won't matter anymore...You'll just forget about it..." The buck was wearing a red bow tie around his neck. The sandy colt had smudges of dirt on his face. He was upset. Khale knew that some of the ponies here would not get there presents if they were adopted today. She also knew that she would be too sad to even remember that she promised to do so. It was only once...just once, that she forgot. "Your right Heavy Hoof...I have forgotten before. And it's true, I won't see some of you again. I wanted it to be a surprise...your gifts will be available to you depending on what happens in the next few hours," Khale walked over to the young buck. He was the oldest of the ponies around him. He had been helping Gramps in the shop earlier, not having time to clean up. Khale licked her hoof and rubbed the smudges away from his face. Heavey Hoof blushed," I love you all, it's hard to watch you go. Me and Sweetie work hard to keep you all healthy and prepared for a new life. But you deserve something special every now and again...I'm sorry Heavy Hoof. Can you forgive me?" "...Yeah sure...sorry Khale," Heavy Hoof blushed again," I just...it sucks ya' know?" "Watch your language Heavy, and yes, it does..." Khale looked over at Sweetie. They both exchanged sad smiles. "Ok kidos, we can't just sit around sobbing over each other! Now get in position and look adorable!" Sweetie yelled, her uplifting tone put a spring in everyones step. A few minutes had passed and the Orphange had already gotten a few visitors. The wealthier ponies were on a different mission of course... Sweetie quickly pulled Khale to the side,"*sigh* it's those stiffs from Canterlot. There still 'sponsoring' this place. I think there trying to see if its even worth it." "I hope they don't stop funding us...we have worked so hard. Theres only so many things we can do outside of the orphanage that can help keep this place running," Khale said, a worried expression on her face. "Don't even think about it like that. We've been doin good so far right?" Sweetie reassured Khale, placing a hoof on her shoulder." I have been thinking though..." "What, what is it?" "It wouldn't hurt to have some more hooves on deck. These kids are a handful and, only two of them are old enough to do the jobs at Gramps. Too many dangerous jobs for the little ones...," Sweetie said. cringing a little. Khale thought about it. She was sure that Sweetie just wanted some stallion around that was good with kids. That couldn't happen. Khale believed Sweetie would get...distracted...However, it was true, they did need more ponies to run things smoother here," Well...one condition..." "Condition?" Sweetie asked, raising her eyebrow. "Yes. No stallions." Khale said smirking at Sweetie. "I...fine. I don't see why not, I could find some very..." Sweetie trailed of, as the Canterlot ponies approached them,"...Crap, the stiffs." Khale and Sweetie turned there attention the two ponies aprroching them. One was a buck who wore a black suit, his bow tie was yellow. He had a small mustache and a monocle that was on his right eye. The light yellow stallion had his yellow mane combed back and a very disdained look on his face. The other pony was a mare with a large yellow dress, and a ridiculous yellow mane that towered over her in a bee hive type fashion. She had a bright yellow stone on the necklace she wore around her neck. She had a curios look in her eyes when she spotted the two, " Well, I must say, you two have been very productive. Eight I believe, were adopted two months ago. Giving these poor ponies a place to live is a very admirable thing. Don't you agree Perish?" The yellow buck, eyed Khale and Sweetie. He didn't seem impressed," Yes, I suppose. But sister we can't depend on that to happen often. This place seems to be caring for the children but, that doesn't mean it will be worth the money we put into it." "Oh Perish stop being up tight. What kinda of ponies would we be if we didn't give to our...less fortunate neighbors," The yellow mare smiled wide at Khale and Sweetie. Something about the way she said that made Sweetie angry. Khale noticed it immediately and changed the subject," Um, yes..we do our best. We don't rely on other ponies to pull us out of a jam though. If push comes to shove, i'm sure will manage." "Oh, so you won't be needing our money after all," The yellow stallion declared," In that case..." "No! Thats not what she meant," Sweetie interjected," We can hold are own, but it'd be barley scraping by. We'd have to overwork ourselves if we didn't have your...charity." "Hmmm, see Perish. They need our help, by the looks of things I say we had something to do with the turn out so far yes?" The yellow mare smiled again. It Made Khale and Sweetie cringe inwardly. "Yes...Thank you...," Khale said, trying hard to be sincere. "Don't thank us yet, we keep track of this place. We expect whatever you make over the next few months makes it to the right ponies, yes...?" The yellow stallion glared at Khale," I'd hate for you to start owing bits." "We will make sure of that, our store front has been doing exceptionally well this past year. We hope to make enough to cover the last loan you gave us. Oh, thanks again for that," Khale said, a nervous smile etching on her face. The yellow stallion huffed,"Like I said, Don't thank us yet." The yellow mare chuckled, "Perish dear, stop being so...," "Its fine, really. We almost have all we need to pay you back. We are very grateful." Khale smiled more genuinely this time. The two ponies gave Khale and Sweetie another look over. They seemed to be judging them, silently, with there eyes. The yellow mare smiled," Well...we approve. We'll leave for now. Me and my brother have pressing matters to attend to back in Canterlot. Keep up the good work you two." The yellow mare and here brother left the orphanage through the front door. "Urgh...I hate talking to those stuffy ponies. There just so...urgh," Sweetie looked over her shoulder. Her expression changed to a surprised one. Sweetie nudged Khale. Khale turned to Sweetie who was pointing to the small filly Lemon Spice. The lime green filly was wearing a small yellow sundress. She seemed to be having fun with the couple that took interest in her. Khale and sweetie never saw the little filly so happy... "Wow, its as if they were meant to find the little filly," Khale said with a sad smile. "Yeah...jeez, that filly always made some wonderful candles ya know. I guess we know how that visits going to end..." Sweetie began to walk over to the couple before turning back to Khale." You should check on the others, I got this one." "Right. We'll meet up in the kitchen when we are done?" Khale asked. They had some plans to go over. Some of the children wanted to visit the market today. "Of course Khale, now hurry up. We have work to do." Sweetie said with a playful tone. The kitchen had an alluring aroma coming from it. Khale made her way inside to find Baker making her signature banana nut bread. A middle aged mare was smiling at the filly as Baker pulled the freshly made dessert out of the stove. The older mare ran a bakery in town, she had been looking for replacements after her apprentice was caught steeling bits from the coffers."Your very good at that Baker, you sure you don't have your cutie mark yet?" The older mare asked the blushing filly. "....Um...no...I haven't noticed anything yet. But, I wont stop baking until It happens!" The chocolate filly flushed even more. The older mare giggled, a twinkle in her eye made Khale feel...happy. A kind of happy that could only come from being able to pair the two together. Khale cleared her throat to get their attention,"I see you two are getting along. I knew, soon enough, that you'd come around Chef." The older mare looked down at the smiling filly, then back at Khale,"I won't lie Khale, she's defiantly got talent. Not only that, she's as cute as a button for sure." "T-thanks...," The chocolate filly blushed again. "So...there isn't much you have to do to adopt. The proper papers can be signed in our office, then you can be on your way Chef," informed Khale, she gave Baker a look that reassured the filly they would keep in touch. "Really huh....Ok Khale, I wouldn't mind having a daughter. Especially one as amazing as her," The older mare rustled the fillies mane. The filly blushed bright once again. She then started to hug the older mares hoof," T-thanks Mrs. Chef!" Khale looked at the two happily laugh together as they continued to bake. She had a strange pain tear at her heart but, she swallowed the pain and moved on upstairs. As she made her way up, she could hear ponies applauding in one of the rooms. Khale peeked inside the bedroom of Caster. He was a small unicorn buck that had been able to master levitation. He was being praised by two unicorn ponies that each wore glasses. They seemed to take a liking to him, Khale left them be until they were ready to sign the papers and make it official. Khale was over joyed to see her little ponies happy, for them to have someone outside the orphanage take interest in them. It was a magical sight sometimes but, Sweetie and Khale agreed that it was a bitter sweet moment...more often than not. Unfortunately, not all of her ponies would be able to share in that glorious feeling. The feeling of another pony appreciating something they can do. Khale reached Heavy Hoofs room. He was laying at the edge of his bed. He didn't look happy and, he didn't look up when Khale sat next to him. He was angry, that no pony really thought of him as...useful,"Heavy...honey, whats wrong?" Khale asked, putting her hoof around the young buck. "You know whats wrong," He sniffed," No pony out there needs a earth pony who can lift boxes and crates. I can't be of use to those..." "Heavy dear, your not telling me that your useless are you...?" Khale put her hoof under the bucks chin and turned his face to hers. Heavys eyes were puffy, he swept Khales hoof away and returned his gaze to the floor,"...Yeah, its true though...I am..." "No it isn't!" Khale yelled. Heavy was frightened, he never heard her yell before," You have brought so many smiles in this place with your jokes, even if they are inappropriate. You make us all smile when we'er feeling down. And gramps couldn't possible move all those heavy crates without you. He's a strong stallion but he needs you Heavy..." Heavy smiled slightly, he hugged Khale. He was embarrassed but happy that he could hear someone tell him that," Y-your right, I just...." "It's ok Heavy..." Khale cooed, hugging him back. "You know I haven't made a joke since I was a little colt right. I haven't made anyone smile for a long time..." Heavy said in a sad tone. "Thats nonsense Heavy, you make me smile everyday...I just wish you knew how much we all love you sweetie," Khales soft voice relaxed Heavy. It reassured him, that everything was going to be fine. Heavy was still a little down but, he had something to think about instead of groveling in his bed. Khale left him to his thoughts and entered the hall way. Khale was feeling better about the adoptions so far, it was time for them to have a family that would care for them exclusively. Children will come and go but, she would never forget the experiences they had together. *Boom* *Boom* *boom* Khale quickly turned to her attention to the wooden door at the end of the hall. The creaking noise was eerily familiar. The wooden door screeched and splintered as the booming continued. Khale wasn't scared, not exactly. She was confused at why she wasn't afraid. Her fear was replaced by a curiosity that urgently needed to be fulfilled. She slowly started walking down the large hall way. The orphanage was a big place. It could hold as many as twenty plus ponies. Rooms on this floor were on the left and right side of the hallway. The problem with the door at the end of the hall was...well, there wasn't a door at the end of the hall. There is, but there shouldn't be. The booming got louder, and Khale got closer. The door was resilient, sturdy. The violent force behind it must have been toying with her, yeah, the thought crossed her mind. Why wouldn't the door just brake apart already? Khale reached the door, the noise had stopped. It pulsed with a dark aura. She could feel the warmth tickle her coat as her hoof reached for the knob. Whispers started to flow in her mind like smoke. They were, soft, assuring. She could feel a blissful smile creep up on her face. She was afraid...not what was behind the door but, that she had already trusted the presence before she knew what it was. Khale hesitated only for a second,"I...I need to know...I need to find out. All I have to do is open the door." Right before Khale could reach the knob, Sweetie called out to her from the opposite end of the hallway," Hey you still alive Khale!?" Khale quickly turned to her friend, then back at the door. It had vanished, she could still feel the warmth from its presence. Slowly, that faded as well. She turned to her friend once more and trotted quickly to her. She didn't dare look back... Sweetie and Khale finally finished up the last order of business. The papers were signed, the ponies bags were packed, and ever pony had already said there goodbyes. All except for Baker, the chocolate filly, had made a close friend in the orphanage. Her departure would greatly impact the two. A filly with red and cream colored swirls on her coat gave Baker an incredibly long goodbye hug. They both cried, but tears of joy had been shed as well as sorrow. The two would help each other in the kitchen, although, baker was the teacher most times. As the two mares parted, the finally said goodbye. Baker promised that she would visit when she could, which made Pastry extremely happy. The others waved goodbye and that was that. "So, Needlle and Thread is with the carpenter ponies," Sweetie stated filing the papers in a desk drawer labeled: Needle and Thread. "Lemon Spice is with the traveling couple, the peddlers I presume..." said Khale opening another drawer from the wooden desk. "Caster, with the scholars, not a surprise there," Sweetie chuckled," I guess he'll be wearing glasses to match the family huh?!" Khale had a flat expression her face," That was a very poor excuse of a joke Sweetie...Anyway, Baker is with chef. I hope we can see her again sometime." "Don't worry Khale, we'll get to that later. Lets just get to the kitchen, i'm sure everyone is excited about going to the market today." The children that were still reaminig in the orphanage waited in the kitchen for the two care takers. The two mares entered after a few minutes had passed. Khale saw that Heavy was present and gave him a warm smile. He smiled back, he still looked upset but, better... "Ok we all ready to go!" Sweetie yelled. The kitchen was filled with the children roaring in agreement for the market and the same for staying home. They couldn't seem to make up there minds. "I don't feel like going to the stinky market!" A white filly with a yellow green mane yelled. "Hahaha yeah it stinks! It stinks!" A smaller buck yelled, banging on pots. Khale and Sweetie underestimated the gravity of the situation. They hadn't realized that there would be two sides of the matter. More uproars against going to the market rose. The same went for those wanting to go. Heavy covered his head trying to block out all the yelling. Khale and Sweetie exchanged looks and sighed," Nothing changes does it," Sweetie said, stepping forward."Alright! Everyone quiet!" All the ponies quickly quieted down and turned there attention to Khale and Sweetie. Khale steeped forward and began to speak," Ok, every pony who wants to go to the market raise your hoof!" "Alright, thats Mar, Rising Sun, Starlight, Heavy, Jo, and...Pastry," Sweetie said, counting the hooves raised," Then that leaves me Milly, Ring Tosser, Moon Jumper, Hop, Pots and Pans, Black Berry, Apple sauce, and Lotus...You go on Khale, i'll go next time alright?" Khale hugged Sweetie titghtly,"Good luck, you know how rowdy they can get sometimes." "Yeah yeah, just bring me back that fancy Canterlot wine i've had my eye on," Sweetie said with a smirk. Khale smiled brightly at Sweetie before leading her ponies to the market. They had all gotten out of there nicer clothing from earlier and were ready to trek through the busy town streets. The cobble stones had only covered so much of the road, so most of the path was dirt. It had rained recently so, the mud made it difficult for some ponies to pull wagons through. Trips to the market could get bothersome, but with all the extra help Sweetie and Khale had, they were't too worried with getting the supplies they needed. Today wasn't a normal supply run though, it was more of a...selfish endeavor for the ponies today. "Hey...Mrs. Khale...?" spoke Jo, trotting close to the caretakers side. "Yes Jo?" Jo furrowed her brow at the mare," Are you really going to give us presents?" "Of course Jo. Sweetie is giving the ponies back home there presents right now...why, whats the matter..." Khale asked, puzzled at the question. A candy red earth pony mare with a white mane appeared on the opposite side of Khale," She wants to know what her gift is obviously. She's been bothering Sweetie about it all day..." "Hey! Shut up Mar!" Jo yelled blushing," I just...I was waitin on sumthin special!" Khale was surprised at Jo's outburst but, it only showed her how much this 'present' meant to her," Jo don't be rude. And Mar, don't belittle her. You two are always doing this, your like siblings, sisters...It's actually kinda of cute sometimes. But you two should really be nice to each other." Mar and Jo looked over at each other. They both spoke at the same time," Sorry..." "Good...," Khale turned her head to the ponies behind her," Stay close every pony, we are about to stop at this jewelry stand." Khale and her ponies got as close to the stand as possible. Ponies all around were trying to sell wares and food, wagons and carts. The streets were always busy. Khale knew it was dangerous at times but she was confident in her children to stay close and clear of wagons."Hey Jo, I've been noticing how much you wanted this pendent here...It's important to you...." Khale said her smile beaming at Jo. "...It's no big deal..." Jo said kicking the mud beneath her,"...I mean, it's just a rusty piece of metal..." The pendent was rusty, but the beautiful pink gem inside matched the fillies pink eyes. She wouldn't admit it but, the pendent actually belonged to her mother once. After loosing her Mother to bandit ponies, that was all she had left. It was stolen along with countless other possessions when she found out her father was planning on leaving her here the same day. It broke the filly, made her hardened in some ways. She would never be the same, but she could at least have something that would make her feel...closer to normal,"I believe It is a big deal Jo," Khale turned to the merchant zebra mare," I'll take that pendant there..." "Really now...fifty bits please....Thank you, here you go little one..." said the Zebra mare, pendant in hoof. Jo's pink eyes light up. She carefully clasped the pendent in her hooves,"...T-thank you Mrs.Khale...." Khale smiled, feeing Jo's hapiness sprout right before her eyes. The zebra mare leaned in and placed her hoof on top of the pendent," You know...that rust is just a disguise. Beautiful treasures like that have a way of keeping themselves hidden," The zebras hoof lifted from the pendent. The metal was cured, and the gem shined like the sun in the sky. Jo was in awe at the perfection, Khale herself was taken aback."See...thats what it really looks like, one day, everyone will be able to see such beauty in you little one." "Jo, what do we say...?" Khale nudged Jo with her hoof. "Oh, um, thank you nice jewelry zebra lady!" Jo squeaked and put the pendent in her mane. Khale and the zebra smiled as the filly danced happily with her new treasure," How...did you do that...?" Khale asked. "I don't believe you'd be so impressed if I shared how simple it was," The zebra replied with a sly chuckle. Khale smirked, unsure of how to feel about the deception," Well, are you more than just a peddler?" "Hmp, oh pony, i'm just a harmless zebra selling harmless junk. Theres nothing more I could be." The zebra smiled and nodded," But I do have one trick i've been good at since I was a little filly." "Really...what is it?" Khale asked, her curiosity scaring her a little. She started to shake with anticipation. "Hmmm, your really that interested huh?" The zebra leaned closer," Well, I do a little hoof reading. Every pony has a different future to be told. I read it off of your hoof...ridiclous huh...?" Khale felt a strange urge to indulge in the hoof reading. She felt odd, like she needed to know what the future had in store for her," Read my hoof, please!" Khales hoof nearly jabbed the zebra in the eye, she took her hoof and began," Jeesh pony, patience. I'm already starting." "I'm so sorry, i've been jumpy lately and..." Khale trailed off. The zebra had stopped, her expression was alarming," What...what is it?" "Nothing....," The zebra said, holding Khales hoof firmly. Khale relaxed and exhaled,"Oh...well, then..." "No pony, you misunderstand. There is nothing, I read your hoof, I get a vision. It's a spiritual thing...a glimpse. Sometimes its vague or even wrong...but I've never received 'nothing' before. I'm sorry pony...maybe i'm not feeling well." The zebra carefully returned Khales hoof back to her. "No its fine, I was just hoping....Oh, never mind. This was foolish of me. I'm sorry to keep you." Khale gathered her ponies and they all crossed the street together. The zebra watched them as the crossed the busy, muddy road. The zebra shook her head solemnly," Poor pony...such a nice pony and no future...she doesn't deserve that..." Khale and her ponies had finally returned to the orphanage. It was late and the others were already getting ready for bed. Khale had made a few stops around the village for the kids. Pastry wanted to see baker, even though they had only just saw each other earlier. Her new mom seemed to really enjoy the company. Mar had been wanting a new brush for some time now so, Khale found a suitable one in one of the kiosk in town. Of cousres Mar complained but, quickly fell in love with the simple hair brush after a while. Khale knew she'd like the colorful patterns and the detailed design. The others returned to find their gifts waiting for them on their beds. It wasn't how she wanted to surprise them...she wanted it to be special...Khale took there happiness as a reward regardless. The children were restless at night at times but, they would end up sleeping safe and sound in there rooms. The night was calm, and the house was peaceful. "Goodnight Khale, i'll see ya up earlier tomorrow right!?" Sweetie called out. "Of course Sweetie! GoodNight!" Khale replied from her bedroom. She was tired, more so than usual but it was a nice feeling to be able to rest. Although she couldn't help but dwell on the zebra mares words...'nothing'...just like the end of her dream. There was nothing....just, darkness... Ponyville Schoolhouse at night: Cherilee closed the book and looked up at the children from her desk," Thats the end of chapter one, what do think so far my little ponies?" Every pony had their own opinion about the story. It was expected of course, Cherilee wanted to make sure she could possible read it again the next night. They did want a new story right, something different, something more...grown up" I think it was boring," huffed Diamond Tiara. "Yeah, I agree, pretty boring," Seconded Silver Spoon. "Boring...really?" Cherilee said a little deflated," Well..." "It wasn't too bad. Me and Baker have something in common," Sweetie Bell chimed, a smile on face,"...we can both bake stuff!" Applebloom spoke up after Sweetie Belle had finished, " Maybe it was a little...uh, boring in the middle part. I think it was still good though..." "Thats not the only thing you and Baker have in common Sweetie Belle!," Diamond Tiara said a smug look on her face,"Both of you are blank flanks! Diamond Tiara started to laugh and Silver Spoon had joined her. Cherilee wasn't especially surprised at the behavior but at the same time, she wasn't happy about it either. Before she could intervene, Scootaloo spoke up against the two snooty fillies,"At least there actually good at something! You two are only good at being jerks!" Diamonad Tiara gasped, then she furrowed her brow and scowled at Scootaloo. Diamond was about to shoot back with something else but, Cherilee stepped in before things escalated any further," Thats enough every pony! I would like to know if you all would like me to read this story again. I will admit, its a little slow at first, but it picks up a little later in the story. So what do you say, shall we continue this tale for another night." Cherilee Looked over her students and saw most show there signs of approval. "The banging at the door was pretty cool!" Snips said, his voice breaking a little. His friend snails nodded in a approval as well, in a goofy manner," Yup, it was...cool, eh" Cherilee was happy to see that her little ponies had even a slight interest in the story. She wanted them to enjoy it enough to continue and be mature enough to handle its darker sides. She dismissed them and reminded them to tell their parents that this was an ongoing event for the night time. They all left the school house and trotted back home. Cherilee smiled to herself," Hmmm, me and Khale have something in common. We both love are little ponies." Later that night, Cherilee was asleep in her bed. She realized it had gotten extremely cold inside and decided to bring extra blankets to the bedroom. She didn't think much of it really, it was just a freakish temperature drop...right? She was having a pleasant dream, were all of her little ponies were having fun together. No arguments or snide remarks. They were all a happy family, similar to Khale and her family at the orphanage. She felt good about the story, it could teach a valuable lesson to the ponies, about family, not just the one your born with, the one you make for your own. *Boom* *Boom* *Boom* Cherilees door began to creak, the noise got louder and the door was starting to splinter. She shot up from her sleeping position and watched as the door received even louder bangs on the other side. She was frightened, a story is a story. It's not like those things could really happen, but once they do...Her fear subsided after a while, the force on the other side was relentless but, she couldn't help but giggle at its feeble attempts to break the simple door down. It was still strange, she wasn't sure what to do. She was in no position to handle whatever it was outside, she was curious though. Cheerilee climbed out of her bed and slowly trotted to the door. The closer she got, the quieter the banging would get. And as she approached she noticed how much warmer it was than the rest of the room. The icy cold she had been experiencing was annoying but, this warm presence....Her hoof reached for the handle, the door pulsed and vibrated softly...she hesitated...,"No, this is just like the story...I must be dreaming anyway...I'll just..." *Boom* *Boom* *Boom* Cherilee squeaked loudly as the door rattled again. The force on the other side didn't seem to appreciate that choice. She tried to back away but found her movement halted by an invisible appendage. She could fill silky, oily, tentacle like appendages slither around her. Her eyes went wide as she gained awareness of the foreign feeling. The tentacles wrapped slowly around her body, a slight squeeze made her gasp. The appendages were strong, she felt like she was being cradled carefully. As if the appendages wanted to be carful enough not to break her. Cherilee tried desperately to relax but she had trouble concentrating, a larger appendage had been coiling around her neck. It slowly began to constrict, it squeezed and squeezed, she could feel her breath becoming harder and harder to come forth. She wanted to yell for help but she couldn't, the tentacle made it clear that it wasn't letting go. Small popping sounds started to make her feel nauseous. Cherilee felt her neck creak under the pressure, she gasped for air but, the effort was wasted. Cherilee thought of all the little ponies in her class, her students, she wanted to be there when they succeeded. She wanted to watch them grow and, become the best they could be but, she was understanding her situation well at this point. Tears fell from her face...she gasped one more time...the appendage loosened for a moment, then quickly shifted and snapped her neck clean. The pain was incredible, but brief, she didn't feel much after that. Cherilee was dead but, for some reason she could still see. Her gaze however, was fixed to the ground. The invisible appendages laid her body gently to the floor of her bedroom. Her vision began to fade to black...all she could see was darkness... > Chapter Two: Still Breathing... > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Cheerilee's eyes shot open. She lay flat on her back staring up at the ceiling. Her bones ached, mostly around her neck. She groaned as she leaned from the bed slowly. She noticed that the door was closed shut, like she had done before heading to bed. Why was she feeling so tired, more so than usual, she was exhausted. She hoped from the bed and went to the bathroom. She started the shower and began to brush her teeth. First the front, then the back, gums..."Ah, what the...?" Cheerilee's toothbrush broke, the head snapped off and stabbed her in the gums. She spit some of the blood down the sink, washing it away with the water. She paused for a moment and blushed."Heh that was, interesting..." She swallowed. The blood tasted...different. She was surprised at how good it taste, but she felt embarrassed to like it. She giggled and threw away her old toothbrush. She stepped in the shower and washed herself off yesterdays grim. A lurking feeling in her mind haunted her. It beckoned her, begged for her attention. She felt as if her house wasn't her house...not exactly. It felt more like it was, living. It was as if she could feel the walls breathing, hear its heart beating. The uncomfortable feeling distracted her as she was making her way outside. She grabbed her bags and lesson plans and headed out the door. A noise behind her made her look back quickly."What was..." Cheerilee shrugged and shut her door. She saw a cloudless sky and the sun shine bright as she made her way to the schoolhouse. She was hoping the day would go by normally like always. The schoolyard was teeming with life. The children were running around and playing. Cheerilee was smiling as they did. She was surprised that Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon weren't causing any problems. She watched as they all played in a chaotic bliss, such as how children play, she thought to herself. She wondered in her mind however, why did the blood have such an odd taste. It had bothered her during the lesson today. Why was this still nagging her? She hadn't had such a thought plague her mind in this way before. She blushed again, feeling silly for making such a big deal out of it. It was just a nick in her mouth that was particularly sweet in a way. Nothing too strange about that right? The mare felt the blood come from her mouth again. It filled her mouth until it dripped from the edges of her lips. "Mmff!" Cheerilee's surprise caught the attention of Scootaloo. She had been trotting by when Cherrilee started her...anomaly. "Are you OK Miss Cherrilee?" Scootaloo asked, raising her eyebrow. Cheerilee was unable to reply but the side of her that was always egar to reassure the little ponies was strained. She musterd up a nod and slowly walked toward the school house, as not to startle any of the children. As soon as she got inside, she raced to the bathroom. Her mouth was full of blood, the strange off setting blood was sweet and tangy, making her feel uneasy and startled. She coughed and hacked as it cascaded from her mouth. Why was this happening? Why is this so...tasty? Her thoughts were jumbled, but she was hopeful that the rest of the day would be better from now on. If only she was alone... Scootaloo backed away slowly from the stall door and silently trotted away... ~~~ Cherilee was feeling better, her episode had finally passed without too much complication. The children seem to behave today after she told them that she'd be reading the story again. She felt a little unnerved by the request, but, she decided that it'd be for the best. It made them ask questions, caught there attention, and in the long run they'd probably learn a valuable lesson. Where was the harm in that? Although...the old book gave her a brooding feeling. A thought boiled in the back of her mind...she couldn't quite make out what it was, but it frightened her. For the children's sake, they would get their story. For her sake, she'd sleep better tonight. The final lesson of today was completed. Cherilee smiled at the the little ponies and withdrew the old book from her desk. "Who's ready to found out what happens to our care taker? Shall we...?" ~~~ The fire burned endlessly. It destroyed houses, separated families. Fields were razed to the ground. The bubble around the village kept all who had tried to escape the fire inside. If the fire didn't kill them, the smoke would, if they didn't want a slow death...then they took matters into there own hooves. It was a life that had been hard enough with all the monsters lurking at night, now it was as if the town was being punished for the sins of the others, the monsters. Off in the distance, near a forest, a group of young ponies stared at their home...burning to the ground. One filly in particular stared at the fire in awe, her green eyes almost changed colors with the blazing scene landscape. "Khale...Khale lets go..." the small filly behind her tugged at her fiery mane. she didn't move." Khale come on we have to go, we aren't safe here!" Khale grabbed all she had left and turned to Sweetie, her eyes filled with tears but her expression frozen in confusion."Why...why did this happen...?" ~~~ Khale woke up, she was feeling ill. Her dreams had gotten worse and now the past was surfacing up again. Today was to be a normal day. No events, nothing special, no market trips until next week...hopefully. She was grateful of days like this. It wasn't often they would host events like that, only at the start of a new month in hopes of finding suitable parents. Of course the times in between that, children would still find themselves in a new home, a better home. "You look like shit..." Sweetie said in a whisper,"...you OK?" "Don't cuss, and no...I feel like I've been dead...Think I should see Utopia?" "That crazy old fool? I'd rather you see a witch doctor, or that zebra in the market. That stallion is loosing his mind, just saying..." Sweetiee chuckled," Just rest up a bit more and we'll decide later. I'll get ya something hot." Khale chuckled inwardly," The care taker needs a care taker..." Khale flopped back down in her bead and stared at the ceiling. She was tired, her head hurt, her bones ached. She had a strange urge but she couldn't quite tell what it was...her mind traveled the room in search of answers but to no avail. Maybe it was a cold, or a fever, maybe stress? "Khale?" a tiny voice called from the foot of her bed. "Jo...what is it dear," Khale could recognize the voice, and the timidness in it. Khale began to worry something was wrong," Come closer darling..." Jo trotted up next to the filly and beamed up at her," I just wanted to check on you...everyone says that you keep getting all sick and stuff. Just the other day you were fine though...What gives?" Khale had a look of frustration on her face. Not knowing the answer was a failure she felt she committed, not being able to answer the filly. But the fact that she couldn't guarantee her health worried her even more. This place was barely getting through. One pony couldn't take care of everything and stay sane at the same time."I'm sorry Jo...I guess i'm not as cool as I used to be huh?" Khale chuckled. Jo allowed herself to laugh along with Khale, "yeah, your super lame haha...," Jo stopped and stared at the ground briefly,"...but get better soon OK..." Khale was about to reassure the filly, but promising that she'd be better in no time felt like a lie...Sweetie entered the room and raised an eyebrow when she saw the filly staring at the ground," Hey, Jo, be a dear and help Pastry with the dishes OK...she made a mess trying to make those cake things...go on, skidaddle..." Jo perked up a little and nodded her head slowly. She trotted out without saying a word," I'm scared...what if..." "Shut it, drink this tea, rest. That girl thinks the world of you and if you leave her i'll grab you outta death and beat you back to life, understand?" Sweetie forced the tea cup into Khale's face. Khale smirked and held the cup up to her lips, she took a few sips," OK, i'll try to...not die I guess...A third caretaker though, just in case this happens often we need the extra help..." Sweetie sat at the edge of Khales bed," Whelp, we could put up some signs, do some interviewing? Hey, it'd be a another way to attract some more attention here, get more support. More funding from the public, they do it for the school houses, why not us?" "It doesn't matter, we just need another care taker first. And we don't provide education here, so we don't get the same reputation as the school house simply because we give children homes Sweetie..." Khale sighed and took a sip from her cup. "We give kids without homes, homes! What more do they need!? If it wasn't for us, we'd have pickpockets, whores! We'd have these kids going around causing mayhem. At least here, they can grow up in an environment that promotes safety..." Sweetie huffed," I mean who do those bastards think we are, idiots! So we don't have a fancy upbringing, and we don't have a solid education, we'er still good role models! We are what parents a scared to be, parents that care for kids forever! We will always be changing diapers, teaching skills, and letting them aspire to new heights until the day you and me turn to dust!" Sweetie was huffing and puffing, her light blue coat was flushing red. "Sweetie, remember when we were little...No one wanted us because we weren't the cute little fillies they were expecting. We had lost everything, and taught ourselves things our adoptive parents couldn't fathom. To them we were ugly, damaged, we had been labeled as filth because we were...I wanted to do this for one reason...that was to give ponies like us a chance, a second chance of having what we could never have..." Khale leaned forward and hugged Sweetie, she blushed,"I want them to be better than us, not become us...we don't need money to make that happen...lets just get ourselves a little more help, then we'll talk about the rest later." Sweetie hugged Khale back," Yeah OK...sorry about that..." Khale gave Sweetie a reassuring smile, but she felt afraid. Her body was acting strange and she never got back to the door that appeared at the end of the hall. She was afraid that she might be loosing her mind. Although, the dream she had was bothering her. Why that memory, she hadn't thought of that in years, what could it mean? She tried to shake the thought quickly. She wanted to focus on getting better. Sweetie left her be, and she nodded off to sleep. Her dreams weren't disturbed, but a tiny voice called her name in the darkness. It beckoned her, like a daughter would a mother... ~~~ "Be careful Heavy! And don't be out too late OK!" Khale yelled out to the sandy colt. "I'll be fine, like I always am!" He yelled back, a little annoyed but it was routine. Khlae didn't like sending him out to work, but they needed all the extra bits they could get. Its not the most ideal set up, but they worked any angle they could to get by. "He isn't a baby ya' know?" "Your right, he's my baby..." Khale smiled, " Now lets get ready for these girls." "Right," Sweetie brushed her pink and blue mane from her face," Well...this'll be great. Mar has got a couple of them in the kitchen right now actually. Keeping'em busy with her "beauty tips. Honestly some of them could use it." Sweetie chuckled. "Hush! Mar hunny, you can send them in!" Khale said in a scratchy voice. "You really shouldn't strain yourself ya'know. You gonna mess up you voice." Sweetie said quickly before the first mare showed up. Khale shot a look at sweetie. "Hello, how are you?" Khlae greeted, making sure to ease up on her voice. It made her sound very feeble, she didn't like the way it made her feel. "I'm fine, um, what should I be saying exactly? Sorry i'm kinda new to this..." The timid light blue mare smiled sheepishly behind her yellow two tone mane. She had a cutie mark that resembled a collage of hearts. "Just start with your name and what you like. Basically, sale us your reason for being here, convince us we need you to helps us. Once we think your what we'er looking for, we'll send you a letter letting you know when you can start, give ya some time to get your belongings and what not." Sweetie smiled and leaned back,"So, shoot!" Mar was writing in a small journal of all that Sweetie said. She even documented the unnecessary parts. She regurgitated the information to the other girls in the kitchen while the other mare was being interviewed. "M-my name its Sweet Valentine, I um, I watched all of my younger brothers when I was ten. I think I could r-really help out and be a big help. Oh, oh, and I got my cutie mark by being really nice, so I couldn't see myself getting angry at the children. Although my uncle doesn't want me staying over too long, he says I have other responsibilities to take care of..." Khale paused," Other responsibilities?" Sweetie echoed Khale," Responsibilities? Like what?" "Its not really something that I talk about unless its with him...sorry he doesn't trust strangers...." Khale polity told her to wait in the kitchen" That was, interesting..." "Lets just get the next one up..." Sweetie sighed. Mar sent in the next mare, she explained to her two care takers that she explained the basic details to the rest of the mares. " Oh, well in that case, whenever your ready then." Sweetie said giving a smile. The mare was a lot older than there first one, she held her bag close to her on her lap. Her blonde mane was tied up. Her light pink coat was a bit dingy but her aged beauty was admirable. She smiled at sweetie," Of course, I have children of my own actually...sorry, 'had'...I'm hoping that you would let me help, I think it'd really help me get over the loss of my own children. I helped a lot of mothers myself get past loosing there children but...I never would have thought that id be asking for help, from other mothers." "Oh we haven't had children of our own," Khale said quickly," We haven't had the time you see... "Nonsense, your surrounded by adorable children who love you...why would that not count you as a mother? Why haven't you earned the right?" Khale and Sweetie were speechless, and in some small way, ashamed. But the biggest feeling they had, was a sense that they were being praised...Khale smiled, a tear left her eye," Thank you, we'll definitely consider you...if you'd please just wait in the kitchen for us?" "Of course dear, no matter your decision don't forget how important you two are to these children." The older mare left, her bag close to her chest. "I think she just made me feel bad about doubting myself...shes good..." Sweetie said astonished. "She might be a perfect choice, but the part about her just loosing her children...I couldn't bare the emotional stress that comes with looking after children in her situation." Khale rubbed her eyes. "We've done it before..." Sweetie said somberly... "But he wasn't our...."Khale stopped..."Never mind..." The next mare entered, she had bloodshot eyes and a messy black mane. Her dark blue coat was also dirty with a musky smell that followed. She smiled nervously at the two caretakers," H-hello. My names Beetle. I was an orphan myself actually. My mom hated me. Didn't care bout me. Threw me away. I was alone until some nice ladies like yourself helped me. None of the other kids liked me...I looked funny and smelled funny...They would call me bug guts, and beetle baby...Instead of ignoring them, I embraced it...I never got a real name so I just kept Beetle as my name..." Sweetie tried hard not gag as she opened her mouth to talk," You seem really sweet dear, but do ya think you could...wash yourself before we consider you?" Khale's eyebrows raised quickly<" Um, but, we will still consider you! Just, be mindful of the children' s very sensitive noses..." Beetle frowned," I can't..." "No way to get water to your home?" Sweetie questioned. Beetles frown deepened," No, I mean I cant get rid of my odor...this was a mistake..." Beetle got up quickly and slammed the door behind her as she left. Khale felt awful, she sighed and turned to Sweetie," So what do you-" "Oh sweet Celestia that was torture, I hope she lives in the mountains or something, yuck!" Sweetie notice a few of the mares starring at her , and the others trying to figure out what had happened." I mean...next...n-next mare please..." ~~~ "Alright, bye, see ya. And remember we'll contact you!" Sweetie brushed her mane from her face," Ugh, this is something else huh?" "I think we got a lot of good choices lined up, I really do hope Beetle keeps her distance...I know its rude but her order is truly offensive." Khale said in a rasp. "Yeah, i hear ya. I was offended every time I smelt something dead crawl from her ass. Well at least-" Sweetie was interrupted, a knock at the door startled both caretakers. They both stared at it in confusion. Khale felt the tension build, she was on the verge of hyperventilating. She took a step back and jumped as the knock came again. It reminded her of her door splintering in her dream, she couldn't think, she could barely breath. Sweetie began to approach it. "You guys gonna answer that?" Mar said, looking at the grown ponies," Its kinda cool watching you two freak out and all...but seriously you should totally open the door." "Go to your room Mar," Sweetie said with a sigh. Mar huffed and trotted of down the hall. Khale exhaled shakily," Please, open the door dear..." Sweetie rolled her eyes," Your going to your room too missy." Sweetie opened the door, it was the Zebra from the market," Hello, I was worried you'd never answer." She smiled very wide, her eyes almost seemed closed at that point. Sweetie beckoned her in. The zebra slowly entered and took in the orphanage. Every little crack in the floor and groove in the craftsmanship in the wood had her full attention. She inspected the pictures on the wall, and smiled at the ones she liked the most. " Oh sorry, I never told you my name...Its Niome. I came for the opening you had? I'd like to plead my case..." Khlae and Sweetie stared at each other for a moment. Khale then turned back to Niome, "Sorry dear but, we just finished and..." "Oh, well. I suppose i'll be leaving. It was nice to see you again however. Please, stop by my kiosk when you get the chance." Niome smiled wide and started for the door. "Wait!" Jo yelled out, "You gotta let her audition!" "We aren't running a Oprah here kiddo, besides, we'll find what we'er looking for. There is no point..." Jo was upset and frustrated, so she squeezed her eyes shut then opened them dramatically. Jo stared at Sweetie with her big pink eyes. "Sorry little one, I a'int falling for that again." Jo turned to Khale with her pink eyes staring deep into her own. Khale couldn't resist but give the zebra a chance." Oh alright, I cant say no to that cute face!" Jo ran up to Khale and hugged her tight," That's why your my favorite!" "Hey, i'm right here you little brat," Sweetie said blushing, then she let out a sigh" Fine, fine, lets give her a shot." "Splendid!" The zebra exclaimed. The mares sat down with Niome, her smile never really seemed to fade. She seemed eager to talk but not ahead of herself in anyway. "Just tell us about yourself, tell us whatever your comfortable with." Khale said, coughing a little. "Alright," Niome cleared her throat," I was the forth daughter of a family of eight. I was considered the baby, but y mother always told me I had promise. I wasn't always selling wares on a muddy street. I use to have a very satisfying profession. I had a husband, and we were even thinking of having children of our own. After years of trying, I found that I was infertile...I spent a better part of my life hating myself. I couldn't move past the fact that i couldn't bare children. My husband left because he couldn't bare my sadness, I suppose he's better off now. I even tried killing myself..." Niome's smile long but faded. She was almost on the verge of tears. "I found a reason to exist, I searched in places people wouldn't go, I scored trash, and rubble, I even went into dark caves and forbidden areas. I made a life out of collecting the useless and abandoned...I found a purpose...But i'm getting older, and my trinkets aren't catching the eyes of many like they use to. I came here so I could help, do something with more meaning, do something to help our abandoned youth. I was a little heart broken when you turned me away, I'm overjoyed Jo changed your mind...I'm extremely grateful for such kindness..." Niome smiled, the tears never fell, but her sorrow was not to be pitied. Only respected. "That was...beautiful...." Khale wiped her eyes. Sweetie was still a bit skeptical, but she accepted her as a possibility, even if Khale already said yes. She knew her friend. Always a sucker for sob stories, Sweetie thought to herself. Both caretakers agreed to her joining them. They would let the others know of there decision but for now, the three mares sat around talking of better memories, better times...Later that night Khale was sleeping. She tossed and turned. A cold sweat broke out on her. She felt afraid, and relieved all at the same time. Her body shook uncontrollably. She could her the tiny feeble voice i the back of her mind. It grew louder and louder but what was it saying...no, what was she saying...Khale couldn't tell what its was the little one was trying to say. Khale screamed " I can't understand you!" "Ium aluosit theire...wii cain bei toguehter agon!!" The voice screeched, Khale winced and shrieked" AHHHHHHHHGGGGG, I can't...s-stop, stop it please! My ears!" blood trickled from her ears. Soon after her eyes bleed, followed by her nose and mouth. Blood poured from her without end. Her bed sheets soaked up the blood as much as it could hold. However, it began to form puddles quickly. Khale thrashed against the bed, trying desperately to quiet the screeching in her head. "Khale!" Sweetie yelled. Niome was right behind her, and so were the children. "Is that blood!" Pots and Pans yelled. "Do something Sweetie!" Mar screamed. "All of you calm down now! Just stand back, Niome I need you to help me hold her down, shes gonna hurt herself flailing like that!" Niome grimaced but quickly followed orders. The two mares tried as hard as they could to subdue Khale, but she wasn't allowing herself to be contained. Khale had completely lost herself in the agony. Niome gasped, she saw khale lick the blood from her face for a brief moment. "I have seen this before! Sweetie we must leave! Now!" "I'm not leaving her! just hold her down, i can...I'll think of something!" Sweetie was at a loss, Khale thrashed violently and wildly. She trashed everywhere she could. "Let me go! Let me go! its here...Its here!" Khale screamed, then she fainted. Her body went limp, and cold. Almost as if she had been dead for hours. "Khale! Khale wake up!" Sweetie screamed," Please wake up! You got a goddess damned job to do you idiot!" Sweetie said with tears in her eyes. "I'm sorry..." Niome had gotten done checking her vitals," She appears to be dea-" "N-no she isn't! Shes just sleeping! She'll wake up!" Jo yelled," Shes OK! Shes always OK!" Niome stared at Jo and nodded," I apologize little one, perhaps your right..." A whisper came from Khales bloody mouth. it silenced the whole room,"What was that dear. what did you say?!" Sweetie asked, reluctantly leaning forward. "C'mon dear speak up..." "Let. Me. GO!" Khale head butted Sweetie and bucked Niome in the face. She fell with a sickening thud and didn't seem t be moving. Sweetie struggled to get up, holding her head and looking at her hoof to confirm that there was indeed blood on it. Khale stepped over the zebras body slowly. "Its here, I know its here..." She said softly staring at the children. The blood had already stopped flowing for awhile, so the dried blood on her face made her even more terrifying than before. She paced slowly towards the children, Mar and Heavy stood between her and them. They tried to make a protective wall but the eldest children were shaking just as much as the kids were. "Heavy...you should move dear..." Khale's hoof slid slowly under his chin, she lifted his head up. His face was frozen in terror, he wasn't sure if he should run or stay. Khale's face got closer to his. Heavy blushed. "Such a bashful buck...give mommy a..." Khale paused, wide eyed...then her face contorted into anger. She grabbed him by the throat and threw him against the other kids. They all toppled over like dominoes. Khale gracefully stepped over them whispering," There it is...there it is...Its back..." The door at the end of the hall appeared. It was beaten and worn, as if something on the other side was trying to get out. Khale approached it slowly and twisted the knob. She opened the door." Khale!" "Who are you? Khale asked the strange figure, she looked just as confused as she did," Do I know you? Why do I feel so...good?" "Khale please, listen to me!" Jo yelled tugging her caretakers tail. Tears rain down her face and confusion cracked in her voice. She was scared, so afraid that she would loose her," Please, please, please...." Khlae turned around slowly, Jo smiled...unfortunately she was too distracted to see her caretakers hoof. It made contact with her head, and she went flying down the hall. Sweetie quickly ran to Jo, fear and anger quickly over took her. Khale chuckled. Sweetie ran to her friend and swung her hoof at her head as hard as she could. Nothing but darkness. Her sight was blocked by a warm embrace. She could hear voices beyond this trance but she couldn't figure out who. She decided it'd be best to wait till tomorrow. Khale dozed off as hooves lifted her up into the air. ~~~ Cheerilee was exhausted. The children s questions wouldn't stop. They were endless in there debates about what was going on. She was happy that it opened up there minds to deeper subjects but she was worried that the over detailed world being described would, overwhelm them. The darker elements were worrisome but the did want a scarier book. Hopefully they'd continue to be mature about it. She hoped in her bed and tried to sleep but her door was open. She had sworn she closed it when she came back from the shower. Reluctant, and annoyed, she got to shut the door. But a small voice called out to her, it was saying something but she couldn't make it out. She looked out her door into the hallway. Her back was rattling. She was a little frightened but her curiosity was peeked. She approached the door slowly, a full shadow appeared on the other side. It opened...the shadowy figure spoke in a soft female voice... "Who are you?" > Chapter Three Hide and Seek... > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Khale starred in the mirror, her eyes were still bloodshot. She probed the stitches on her forehead, it was still trying to heal. She winced at the pain, it was still tender, as if it just happened. The jolt of pain vibrated her spine. She giggled. "That was...queer...." Khale blushed, she wasn't sure why this feeling was so dominant. She could barely stand to look at herself let alone find her situation amusing. She sighed, her mind was racing but she knew she had to stay focused. She took a sip of water that lay on the small coffee table, it was luke warm but it cured her dry throat. Her orange mane was a mess, she stared at it while trying to fix it with her hooves, she struggled to put the unruly mane into a bun. She had an even harder trying to place the jade butterfly clamps in her mane. "Come on just....arrrgh..." "Having trouble?" "No Sweetie I have thi-" Khale paused as she turned to see who it was," I'm fine, I can handle it..." "Nonsense pony, here, sit..." Niome smiled slyly, pointing to the floor near the bed. "Niome...I..." "Shush, sit!" the zebra mare demanded. Khale reluctantly sat at the foot of the bed and waited for the zebra mare to begin. She sat on her haunches staring into the mirror, watching Niome eagerly grab her mane and prepare to fix her mess. She tried her hardest not to make eye contact with the zebras honest and piercing gaze. Her smile was permanent and demanded attention. She met eyes with the zebra, then noticed the bruising. "Your mane is gorgeous Khale, a tad unkempt but still wonderful. This might hurt a bit. Its a real simple and tight braid my mother taught me. Its prefred for quick fixes, and hot dates!" Niome giggled," But we mares a much too busy for such recreation no?" "I, ow!" Niome pulled at her scalp," I'm sure your right on your behalf...i've had nothing but free time...the children are still, cautious..." 'As they should be..." Niome said without delay. "Right, but I just hope they know that wasn't me...I would never do something like that..." Niome pulled back her mane tight and began to braid slowly," No need to fret Khale...I will be keeping close watch..." Niome stopped and smiled at the mirrior her eyes almost closed,"Um, thank you Niome..." "Please, no need of such Flattery." Niome pulled tighter on Khale's mane," I was honestly considering on leaving...Khale?" Khale winced, she could feel the zebra slowly pull her head back until she was staring straight up at Niome." Yes?" "Make no mistake, I consider you a wonderful caretaker and an outstanding...acquaintance...I hope to one day truly call you friend....but I will lay dead, with all my life drained from my body before I let what happened a week ago happen a second time...Please Khale, don't take this as a threat. Its just I've lost so much..." Niome smiled," I apologize I-" "No...don't...If I do that again Niome...Please Stop me..." Khales eyes watered, " Niome...my mane..." "Oh!" Niome saw as blood beaded from several roots in here mane," Oh my, sorry Khale I...sorry." "It's fine, your very strong. If I were to pass away, at least Sweetie would have a valuable partner to replace me..." Khale smiled at the Bruised Zebra. "Well lets try to avoid such a scenario...I'd also like to avoid anymore bruising as well." Niome winced. Khale giggled," I can promise that much I suppose..." "Good," Nimoe clipped the end of the braid with the jade butterflies," And we'er done...Sweetie is waiting for you downstairs..." "...Thank you...Niome..." Khale stared at her braided mane, it slunked over her shoulder. The jade butterfly made it seem...elegant. "Its beautiful..." "I'm glad you approve...I'll take my leave..." Niome exited Khale's room, Khale watched as she left, but in the mirror a tiny filly watched Khale. She was beaming up at the caretaker. Bright green eyes and flaming red mane. The filly was overjoyed,"I've found you! Now you gotta catch me!" Khale quickly turned to the mirror only to be greeted by her own reflection. Her heart beat through her chest, she could have sworn...She took a deep breath," No...it was nothing...nothing at all..." Khale left but the filly showed up in the mirror again, she frowned. The mirror cracked... ~~~ "Ring Tosser! Pick up this mess, practice you circus act in your room! Pots you gotta chill out with the drum solo, the talent show is months away! Moon Jumper stop...uh...actually reading a book isn't really disruptive..." "Urgh, i'm going outside..."Moon Jumper closed her book after putting a pink ribbon in between the pages. She ran into Khale on her way out, she fell to the ground and stammered at the caretaker. "Sorry little one...I wasn't paying attention..." Khale picked up Moon Jumpers book," Here...I hope I didn't loose you place. The Tale of the Apple Goddess is my favorite as well..." Moon Jumper took the book slowly and stared at it before looking back at Khale,"Um...no, it wouldn't matter anyway I love this book..." At this moment the room fell silent Sweetie raised her eyebrows in surprise." I'm heading outside to get some sunshine...thanks Khale..." Moon Jumper quickly trotted to the back door through the kitchen. "Really...you all quiet down now..." Sweetie pressed here hoof to the bridge of her nose," OK, that's fine...but please stop staring at Khale like she grew an utter on her face." Pots and Hop Scotch giggled loudly," Its fine...I just hope i'm not too distracting..." "Trust me you are," Sweetie said with a smirk," Just look at your mane, tryna pick up a stud? C'ome on, I need to talk to ya." Sweetie motioned for Khale to follow. " Mar your in charge, keep'em civilized. Mar groaned",Finnnne." Khale and Sweetie entered the kitchen. Pastry was waiting on some cookies to finish. Apple sauce and Berry Smoothie were keeping her company by gossiping about trivial things. " Girls..." They all stared up at Khale and Sweetie," Need the kitchen for grown up talk..." "Is Khale in trouble?" Apple Sauce questioned. "No honey..." "Am I in trouble," Berry Smoothie asked with her eyebrow arched. "You will be if I have to ask you to leave again. C'ome on, skedaddle you lil devils." Sweetie shooed away the giggling fillies. Khale smiled as they ran out the back door, possibly to bother Moon Jumper." What is it Sweetie..." "You've been locked in you room for a bit...finally decided to join us again?" Sweetie smirked..." Hows the head...?" "Sore...but I'm glad that's all I have to complain about...Is she still...?" Sweetie cleared her throat," Yeah, she actually gets out today...Hey don't worry about that, Niome's gonna get her from the hospice and she's gonna need more rest. I talked to her and she isn't mad at you ok...just give her some more time..." "I see," Khale started rubbing her hooves together nervously. Sweetie put her hoof on Khales," Please stop doing that, I hate it when you do that..." "Sorry..." "Oh don't get all sad wet puppy on me...Look it's fine, and even at your worse you find a way to look pretty. So just relax ok. It might not seem like it but they're happy to see you, I mean it's been awhile since you've looked the way you do in front of them. They miss you, no more disappearing acts...give it time...ok?" Khale blushed, Sweeties hoof was still on her's. She pulled away," Yeah I know your right...you always are..." Sweetie got an inquisitive look on her face," Sure...I guess...Hey just take it slow..." "I'll do my best Sweetie... and thank you..." "Of course," Sweetie smiled," Well, gotta get back to it...do me a favor and see what Starlights up too, she's been cooked up in her room all day." "Sure thing," Khale said as her light blue friend exited to the living room. ~~~ "Ok children that's recess, we'll pick back up after we get done with the next lesson." Cheerilee closed the old book and placed it inside her desk drawer," I'll meet you out, just don't get too reckless alright?" The children quickly ran out the door almost pushing each other out of the way. She could hardly protest as a strange feeling overcame her. She shut the door behind them when she was sure they were all gone. Her back was against the door, she slid to the floor. She clenched her stomach, clenching her teeth...what was happening? "Arrrrghhhh!" Cheerilee yelled, she whimpered when the pain subsided but that was few and far in-between. She noticed the windows were wide open. She tried to stand, her legs were giving in under her weight as she tried. "What is....arrrrgghh, why is this happening....?" Cherrilee vomited blood on the floor beneath her. She slipped in it and landed painfully on her side. She moaned in agony. The caretaker coughed up chunks of blood all over the floor as she lay there, helpless to her predicament. She gasped for air in between fits. Cheerilee was scared, but another feeling demanded her attention...hunger. But why? Why was she so...empty. She ate so much during lunch, but she felt so incredibly famished. Then it hit her, the aroma, the taste...it was so sweet, even the regurgitated chunks. She had no idea what they were, but they made her salivate. She thanked Celestia under her breath that she hadn't the strength to get to them, afraid of what she might do. The puddle of blood had expanded, she couldn't believe that this had all come out of her..."I have to get up...I can't...let them..." "Cheerilee....? Are you in here?" a small voice called out to the paralyzed teacher," ...I wanted to ask you something..." Cheeriless eyes opened wide, she lifted her head high enough to see the door begin to open. She struggled to get up, and helplessly tried sweeping the blood away but she slipped and landed at Scootaloos hooves. She stared, wide eyed at the filly waiting for a response, unsure of what to say...."Please...Scootaloo..." "What are you doing on the floor, you alright..." Scootaloo asked, her head tilted sideways. Cheerilee quicly looked around and noticed how spotless the floor was," I-I....I must have slipped." "Your bleeding...." Scootaloo tried helping up the confused mare, trying desperately to help the full grown mare to her hooves. Cheerilee shakily rose to her hooves, she prodded her lip, it was busted. The blood tasted normal, she smiled..." Yes, I am." "Ms Cheerilee...I saw you...the other day...are you ok?" Scootaloo asked, nervously. It was unlike her, but she seemed disturbed. "I..." She paused, afraid that she might have frightened the filly," No...I believe i'm sick...and lately I've been having...'night mares'..." Cherrilee actually felt relieved to tell someone this, even if they might be too young to really understand, then again...would anyone understand what's been happening to her lately? "Please, don't be alarmed...I'll be fine..." Scootaloo stared at her teacher with inquisitive eyes," Well...if ya need anything, you can call on me Cheerilee! I'm always up for an adventure!" The caretaker smiled," Your in luck then," Cheerilee had a sudden idea," Maybe if you sleep over, you can scare away all the 'night mares' I've been having. Besides, you're much more braver than me." "Oh really! I get to beat up nightmares!? Count me in! Can I tell Sweetie Bell and Apple Bloom!?" Scootaloo beemed. "Hmmmmm....consider it done, we can make it a super awesome sleepover." Cheerilee smiled," But remember, it's a secret, no one else can know alright." "Pssh, you can count on me, trust me, in no time you'll be feeling as good as new. Cutie Mark Crusaders aren't afraid of anything!" Scootaloo hugged Cheerilee hard. Cheerilee was a bit surprised, but hugged her back, and whispered, " Thank you..." "Between you and me though...I am afraid of one thing...." "Whats that Scootaloo...? "Being alone...don't tell anyone that....promise....?" Cheerilee stared down at the filly, still hugging her tightly,"I would never...and your not alone dear..." After the hug Scootaloo dashed out the door and quickly outside. She ran to Apple bloom and Sweetie Bell, and quickly relayed the great news. " That's awesome!" Apple Bloom said loudly," I can't wait ta wrestle me up some badies!" "Will we be in the dark?" Sweetie Bell asked hesitantly. "Why, afraid of the boogie mare? Oooooooo," Scootaloo said raising her hooves over her head and snickering. "A-am not! I-I'll thrash that big badie, I-i'm not afraid, really!" Sweetie Bell blushed. "Good! Because we have to help Cheerilee get better! So lets get warmed up. Tag! You're it!" Scootaloo tagged Sweetie Bell and ran as fast as her hooves would carry her. Apple bloom ran giggling, barely getting away from getting tagged herself by Sweetie Bell. "Gotta be faster than that slow poke!" Apple Bloom giggled. "Yeah, Rainbow Dash Fast! C'ome on, we gotta get pumped for our super awesome sleepover!" Scootaloo dived into some bushes to break the line of sight. She hide in the bushes and giggled to herself," Heh, can't catch me..." "Tag! You're it!" "Wha-what! How'd you..." Scootaloo turned to see if Sweetie Bell had caught up, but she was nowhere to be found. But she could have sworn..."Sweetie? Apple Bloom?" "Nope...heehee..." The voice giggled. "What the..." Scootaloo backed away and tripped through the bushes to the other side. Sweetie tagged her as she fell through. "I got you, I got you!" Sweetie Bell said between excited breathes," You know, you always hide there..." "Yeah, whats up with that?" Apple bloom chimed in out of no where. Scootaloo giggled, her friends stared at her,"You do know your it right" "You guys had me going, real sneaky!" Scootaloo said while brushing leaves and dirt off her coat. "What are you talking about?" Sweetie asked. "Yeah, you bump yer noggin? Your it scatter brain," Apple Bloom ran off in the opposite direction giggling. "Yes, and it is you who will have to Faster than Dash!" Sweetie Bell giggled and ran off with Apple Bloom. Scootaloo looked back at the bushes," Maybe it was nothing..." Scootaloo shrugged her shoulers and quickly rejoined her friends. But behind the bushes, a showdy figure appeared," Drat! i'll get you next time...." The tiny voice giggled then dissipated into the air... As soon as the lesson plan was concluded, Cheerilee picked up the old book once again and started reading where they left off. ~~~ Khale trotted up the stairs, she slowly made here to the end of the hall. She didn't see it. She was sure it'd be there, but she was content on it not being present. She knocked on Starlights door. "Honey, are you in there...?" No answer...Khale waited for a while longer before opening the door." You need to come out dear, you cant stay in here forever..." A small voice giggled, she froze in place, the small voice seemed familiar. "I'm here...I did it Khale....I figured out how to finally do it!" Khale saw the sudden orb of light float into existence," Oh wow, you realy did figure it out...that, that's outstanding Starlight!" The filly unicorn hopped up and down," Quick we gotta show everyone!" Khale lifted the small unicorn onto her back and they raced quickly down the hall and to the living room. The filly unicorn hopped off Khales back with the orb of light still floating above her horn," Look, look, look! I did it, I did it, I did it!" The filly opened her eyes to spot Perish and his sister. "How very rude," Perish said his noes in the air. "Now I must ask," The light yellow mare began," You all look dreadful, what on earth happened to your faces? Just a tad curious dear..." Khale shooed Starlight out into the kitchen and told her to show everyone outside what she accomplished. Khale was more than upset, she wanted to be able to share the good news, of course the twins never really show up without something important to tell them. She excused herself to prepare some tea for them," Finally, some much needed hospitality...and who is this Zebra by the way?" Niome raised her eyebrows, she smiled, almost ear to ear," Why, i'm-" "Ahem, I was talking to Sweetie...." Perish cut his eyes at the zebra mare," I will address you when I deem it necessary..." Niome's smile faded, she cleared her throat," My name is Niome, i'm the new care taker. I assure you I can give my own introduction without fail," Niome stated firmly," I assure you pony, i'm quite capable of that and much more. However, I do excuse my forwardness, but I can tell you're not fond of zebras...or is it that you have problems with mares of all shades I wonder," Niome giggled. Perish scoffed," How dare you!" "Perish, please...she is now under our sponsorship. The least you can do is show a little respect...even if she is a zebra..." The yellow mare paused," Please excuse us dear, we have had some unwanted experiences with your kind. It's a justifiable response in our case. But enough of that. You've met Perish, my handsome brother, and I, your illustrious backer, am Madam Primula. It is very nice to meet you, but back to the question from before...." Primula pointed to the bruise on Niomes face. Sweetie stammered," Well, we uh..." "Fell down the stairs," Khale said as she brought in the hot tea," We were trying to get Pots and Pans into the bath and he gave us all quite the spill..." "Really..." Primula took the tea from Khale and sipped it," Three of you couldn't get one child into bath water..." "Not the kind of thing to be so calm about..." Perish added," Those bruises, the scars, all that from a slip on the staircase? I find it hard to believe..." "Its true! I mean you should have seen it! The little rascal was just a puff a smoke galloping through the halls like a maniac!" Sweetie said laughing and nudging Khale. "Oh hah, yes he was quite the speedy little colt!" Niome joined in the laughter, enjoying the deception," Yes, besides the unfortunate bruising, it was quite the rousing event for us all!" "Unbelievable, are we really going to allow this foolishness?" Perish said rejecting the tea Khale tried to give to him. Primula smirked," Now, now brother, let them have their moment. If that's what happened I trust they took care of everything quite fine..." Perish rolled his eyes," Regardless...we have other reasons for being here...of course since your zebra friend is here we won't have to call for any one else to watch your children..." "Perish, what are you talking about?" Sweetie said leaning in her chair," It was an accident ok, don't get all-" "Sweetie..." Khale said quickly interrupting her friend. Sweetie sat back in her chair and took a deep breath," What is it, what have you planned?" Primula chuckled," You two are cute. I assure you, its with honest and pure intentions that we invite you two...to a small little party of sorts...Maybe then you'll get an idea of why we decided to help you in the first place..." "I'm sure it was out the deepest parts of your hearts," Sweetie smirked," Right Perish?" "Of course, we aren't as heartless as you'd think. Even if you might believe any different." Perish sighed," But surely i'd be better off if you weren't invited..." Primula interjected," As it turns out, we have a place for in our hearts, albeit small, but we would never forget about you. Think of it as an appreciation ball. We, and many like us, share their accomplishments and all they have helped. And we have...you..." Primula blushed, she seemed embarrassed. "You make it sound as if it's not enough," Niome interrupted. Perish removed his monocle and rubbed it against a handkerchief," We haven't been as active as others have...so it's embarrassing to show so little for all we have done for you..." "Oh gee tha-" Khale nudged Sweetie," Hey! I was just..." "Well regardless, we'd be happy to attend. I'm sure your peers won't see any such short comings you might see in us...." Khale smiled... Primula smiled in response to Khales save,"Of course. And don't you worry about attire, we will get you tailored for suitable dresses. Oh, and please do be on your best behavior. You will be representing us, even if it's in some small way, your actions do reflect on us..." "Yes, two weeks from now, that will be put to the test. As I do doubt this ze- Niome can keep this house intact I will trust both of your judgments against my own...don't let me regret it..." Perish cleared his throat," I believe that's all we had...Primula." "Yes, quite true...Khale, Sweetie," Primula got up and turned to Niome," And our newest guest of honor. I do apologize again for earlier, allow me to make that up to you later..." Niome looked puzzled," Of course, I'll indulge. But I must insist, you mustn't waste you time on such a zebra..." "Oh nonsense, you are under our charge, I'd be so very delighted..." Primula curtsied and turned to the door, Perish bowed as well and followed after his sister. Sweetie walked them out and and shut the door tightly," Urgh, finally...I'm so freakin sorry Niome...there a bit..." "They don't think too fondly of zebras...I'm not quite sure why." Khale felt a lump in her throat," That was embarrassing..." Niome chuckled," You ponies are so silly, I'm fine. I've dealt with such prejudice before. I can hold my own. Although, I appreciate your concern...I will not let you down though..." Khale gasped," That's right! We're just leaving you with a whole orphanage full of children!" Sweetie slapped her forehead," Oh yeah...you really think you're up for that Niome?" Niome chuckled again," I will not let you down, this zebra is ready for anything!" Khale and Sweetie were nervous of what the outcome might be, but they trusted the zebra mare. They both however were not entirely sure how this appreciation party would go. Sweetie was obviously objecting to it but Khale thought it might be good for them to finally have some time to relax, especially given the recent circumstances. Later that very night, all the children were tucked in bed and ready to dream. When Khale finished up with the others she made her way t Jo's room, Niomie was tucking her in. She stopped at the entrance at the door. Niome noticed the mare, she smiled and waved her in," Come, I'll leave you two be..." Khale reluctantly entered, she smiled nervously at the filly. Jo smiled back," Hey Khale...look, I got this sweet cast! Everyones signed it!" Jo laughed. "Oh, wow that is pretty cool...Are you ok? I, I don't know what came over me Jo...." Khale stammered... Jo raised her eyebrow," What? I'm a little banged up but i'm fine, really! That was pretty crazy though, but your ok now...right!" "Jo...I hurt you...aren't you..." Khale started to shake, the bruise under the little fillies eyes. The cast around her fore leg. Khales eyes overflowed with tears. She couldn't help it, why was she so selfish. She wanted to comfort Jo but instead, she was overwhelmed by the state in which she was in. "Stop it! Stop crying, you big baby!" Jo wrapped her hooves around Khale," Ow, ah...don't do that...be happy! I'm ok, really I am!" Khale shuttered, but she held the filly. Being careful not to hurt the little one, and tried her hardest not to cry."I'm sorry Jo...your right. Your so strong...I promise you Jo...It will never happen again..." "Well of course it won't!" Jo said letting go of Khale and pouting," It was an accident, and it was kinda fun...even if it was kinda scary..." Khale smiled at the filly," Well, no more of that kind of fun. Hows about I keep you company tonight, does that sound good?" "Well duh!" Jo said trying to raise her hooves but on the account of being too sore the attempt was barely achievable. "Splendid, goodnight Jo..." Khale said hugging the tiny filly. "Goodnight Khale..." Jo said hugging her caretaker back. A tiny voice rang out to Khale from the corners of her mind," Goodnight mommy..." She thought it was Jo, but decided not to do anything but smile. That night was uneventful but the rest of the following days, would change their lives...forever...
