Starbloom’s First Birthday

School had just let out for the day and Starbloom was on her way home but Sweetie Belle stopped her, “Hey Starbloom hang on a minute!” she called out galloping up to her quickly, she panted softly trying to catch her breath, Starbloom tilting her head and watching the unicorn filly curiously. “O- one… moment… p- please…” Sweetie gasped, having just run from school, to home, back to school then to catch up with Starbloom. Needless to say, the white filly was out of breath.

“Easy there Sweetie, you’re going to pass out, sit down and take long deep breaths.” Starbloom advised leading Sweetie Belle over to a soft patch of grass under a tree. “Take a moment to catch your breath alright?”

Sweetie Belle flopped down after being lead over to the patch of grass and took slow deep breaths to catch her breath, once she was calmed down she smiled. “That’s better, thank you.”

“Now, what’s got you so worked up?” Starbloom asked once Sweetie had caught her breath. “Is the boutique on fire or something?”

Sweetie shook her head giggling softly. “No nothing like that, I was just wondering, what you had planned for the day.” Sweetie smiled looking at Starbloom.

Starbloom blinked, and then face hoofed looking at Sweetie Belle, “That’s why you ran all over the place? You wanted to talk to me?” Starbloom asked, trying not to sound annoyed. It wasn’t that she didn’t like her friend, it just seemed odd to her.

Sweetie Belle smiled at her and nodded, “Yep! I wanted to catch you before you got home and got busy with something else! I wanted to invite you to Sugar Cube Corner for some cake.”

Starbloom considered for a moment then smiled, “Well sure that sounds good, I just need to drop my saddlebags off and let my mom know where I’m going.” Starbloom agreed, getting to her hooves.

Sweetie jumped to her hooves quickly making Starbloom squeak in surprise at the sudden movement, “I already asked her and she said it was fine. You can bring your saddlebags, if they’re heavy I’ll carry them for you.” Sweetie Belle said quickly grinning.

Starbloom was suspicious now looking at Sweetie Belle she tilted her head faintly; she had a feeling something was up. However, she decided to play along. “Alright Sweetie Belle, let’s go then.” Starbloom replied, grinning at Sweetie Belle and nodding. Whatever it was, Starbloom figured it would be harmless enough.

Sweetie Belle smiled back and lead Starbloom down the street towards Sugar Cube Corner. However, it looked empty when they went inside. Normally at this time of day, Pinkie Pie was working the counter, but Mrs. Cake was there instead. Starbloom was more than a little surprised at this. Sweetie Belle and Starbloom walked up to the counter and Sweetie Belle smiled up at the mare behind the counter.

“Hello Mrs. Cake,” Sweetie Belle greeted politely.

“Hello Sweetie Belle, hello Starbloom. How are you two doing this fine afternoon?” Mrs. Cake greeted back smiling at them. “Is there something I can get for you two?”

Sweetie Belle looked over at Starbloom smiling. “You can order first Starbloom.” Sweetie Belle offered.

“Thank you Sweetie,” Starbloom said thinking for a moment, “I’ll have a piece of carrot cake and a glass of milk please.”

Sweetie Belle, still smiling, placed her order, “I’ll have a Red Velvet cupcake with buttercream frosting and a glass of chocolate milk please.”

Mrs. Cake gave the fillies a smile. “Alright you two, coming right up go ahead and have a seat.”

Starbloom followed Sweetie Belle to a table nearby and both took a seat. Starbloom placed her saddlebags under the table relaxing. She was still wondering what was going on. Something had to be up with Sweetie Belle acting the way she was, and Pinkie Pie not being at work. Sweetie, she could explain as just being hyperactive but Pinkie never missed a day of work unless it was very important.

A few moments later, Mrs. Cake came out, but not with the order, Sweetie and Starbloom placed. Instead, she came out with her mother, Rarity, Fluttershy, Rainbow Dash, Applejack, Pinkie Pie, Scootaloo, Apple Bloom, Diamond Tiara, Spike, and Noi. Pinkie Pie was pushing a trolley with a simple cake on it, decent size for the small gathering, with simple white frost covered in what looked like raspberries.

“Surprise!” Sweetie Belle shouted along with everyone else. Starbloom smiled but also looked confused, she couldn’t think of any reason for a party.

Twilight could see the look of confusion so she came around to stand closer leaning her head close to Starbloom’s ear whispering in her ear. “Happy Birthday Starbloom! This is the day you first arrived in this world.”

Starbloom tilted her head slightly and blinked she couldn’t believe it, ’Has it been a year already?’ She thought to herself, she smiled. “Thank you everypony, this is a big surprise. I had no idea you guys were planning this.”

“It was Twilight’s idea, she planned everything out. She wanted your first birthday in Ponyville to be special.” Pinkie said smiling looking around Sugar Cube Corner, “Too bad I couldn’t decorate though. It’s not a party without streamers and balloons.”

“Ya can decorate now if ya wanna.” Applejack suggested to Pinkie who now had a huge grin as she started to decorate the store for the party, putting up streamers and other decorations around the store. It wasn’t long before Pinkie had the place fully decorated, as well as catered for a party.

“So Starbloom how old are ya now?” Rainbow Dash asked hovering just off the ground behind everyone else.

Starbloom thought for a moment, she and Twilight had figured physically she was around seven when she arrived, “I’m eight now Rainbow Dash.” Starbloom smiled then squeaked jumping when Pinkie snapped a party hat on her head. “Pinkie, don’t sneak up on me like that.”

“I remember when I was that age, I was so awesome.” Rainbow Dash grinned turning a small loop in the store, knocking a piece of streamer off the ceiling, which floated down and landed across Rarity’s muzzle.

“Honestly Rainbow Dash, you’re so boorish. Come down from there it’s rude to fly inside a pony’s place of business.” Rarity scolded and everyone laughed softly. Rainbow Dash huffed a bit before landing, her arms crossed. Rarity took the piece of streamer off her muzzle and levitated it back onto the ceiling.

Starbloom smiled as she watched, though it started to make her feel a bit homesick for her old friends. She looked over at Apple Bloom, Scootaloo, Diamond Tiara, and Noi standing nearby. She looked over at Sweetie Belle who was sitting across from her.

She smiled again, as much as she missed her old home and life, she had to admit that she loved her new one. She had a loving mother and friends that cared for her enough to throw her this nice surprise party.
