My first poem story. This is held in my DtD series. I wanted to try something new...
This poem story is set in an early Equestria setting, where a young Luna learns how to combat the nightmares that soon effect her daily life.

The Moon's Light

View Online

One princess did sleep under stars and blackened skies.
What lingered in her dreams, not even the king could arise.
Nightmares held the young princess from lullaby’s sweet bliss.
Magic and wish, prayer and tear nothing seemed able to free her, not even a mother’s kiss.

This princess could not understand her plight, the reasoning for her sorrow.
As nights passed by, her hopes soon did not follow.
Until there was little holding her to sleep.
For she feared the night, and began to weep.

Then came the hour of twilight, were she could no longer keep her lids afar.
As her eyes closed, she felt herself fall into a realm of only abyss;
Where all of her phobias terrorized her without pause.
Until a glint of a star caused her fears to tremble.
And then much like the ocean, the princess felt her body rocked slowly to slumber.

Without nightmares the princess quickly matched her sister’s magic on par.
Her father then wondered why her nightmares had gone amiss.
A face soon appeared to the king, which told to the king he was the cause.
Curiously the king stared intently to the face whose appearance an old friend’s resembled.
He cautioned the king that his power was soon to be outmatched and outnumbered.

And once more the princess’s nightmares seeped into her night, now they did not scare, but whisper lies as she slept.

“Your father hates babying you around!”

“Your sister has always been the strongest!”

“You will never be strong enough to raise the moon!”

The princess did in her youth believe.
Through these lies she harbored new hate, envy and contempt.
This time the glint shined once more, but too faint to see.
The star whispered also to the princess in a plea.

“The light from your heart, is all that you need. It’s what keeps me shining, what helps me breathe.” The star grew as it reached its end.

The princess called out the expanding star. “How can you live in such a cold and dark place? Where is your water and food...don’t you need to rest in a bed?”

“I told you princess, I thrive on your joy. Each smile, laugh and giggle your invoke will keep me from growing old. As previously addressed.”

So the princess smiled so wide that the void sparkled with new light.
She saw that the star was actually a colt that coiled his body tight to ward away the chill of night.
His coat was dark just like the night sky and grasped close to his chest was a small star.

The princess knelt down next to him, sharing her warmth to be polite.
The colt raised his head and lifted the cloth from his eyes, which reminded the princess of her sister’s sun of gold.
He smiled back to her and replied. “I was afraid I would burn out, just like my star.”

“What is your name and why are in my dreams?” The princess couldn’t help but protest.

“I don’t know of my name, I did not know this was your dream.
As I've just open my eyes, this is all that I have seen.” The colt confessed.

“Then I’ll call you Seren, just like your star.
What makes me nervous is you seem too weak to have traveled so far.
My name is Luna, I live in Equestria.
I see a pin wrapped around your head with the mark of the Zebra.” Luna professed.

Seren tilted his head perplexed.“But the moon is over there princess, Luna couldn’t be your name.
Luna would see her realm of Serenity as her own.
But there is no balance to be made here, all there is...is darkness-”

“Besides the star you hold.” Luna chimed in, and with her outburst the colt widened eyes to in distress.

“A princess with wings and horn...to balance the moon and night alone?
Could the vision now be foretold?” Seren digressed.

“What vision too you mean, what has been foretold?!
Do you know something about me, that I do not already know?”

“I hear mumbles, whispers from my brother and my tribe.
They speak of Nyx, the Queen of darkness.
She will freeze the land before it can become everlasting bliss.
Her heart is jagged, not like yours, but I felt it change as you wept here alone.
The night time has tortured your pride.
I need you to remember there is much more out there then just dark sky.
You have the Moon and the Sun’s ever watchful eye.
If you are Luna, then you must have the sister of the light.
She and you could help my family...for it is what has been foretold.
From the youngest of Zebra to the very old, but
I do not wish to gibe.”

“You save me from my fears, only to curse me yourself?
How could you Seren! I thought you were my guiding light.”

“I’m sorry Princess Luna that’s not quite why I’m here.
I’m not here to save anyone, not even myself.
I thank you though, for naming me so right.
I feel closer to harmony then ever before.
Have you been listening to me Luna, I want you to find your light, and not another source!
Never rely on the stars and moon to shine alone for you, like I said, it is inside!
That’s where the light does grow, the kind that sunlight would overshadow.

From the colt’s word she felt something warm within her core.
It was an understanding of this realm she was in, a way to stay on course.
For it wasn’t just shadows and fear nor the glimmer stars that could only reside.
This realm wasn’t a dream and not nightmare alone, it only reflected the princess’ pride.
Serenity was the name Seren called it and Luna giggled when she defined it, Serenity was harmony.
A balance the princess did not have.
She feared too much, doubted her power, and thus left her realm hollow.

With a hoof held out to him Luna smiled bright.
All her doubt soon washed away and she saw her dream fade to white.
Then sun had risen, shined to her eyes.
With the warmth of the sun she no longer feared the night.
For she understood it now, that with her family by her side.
Her fears could be undone, put up little of a fight.

What of the colt she dreamed, was he only just a geist?
To build her hope and set her right, or an accidental tryst?
Luna never saw him again, so his name she soon misplaced.
Until the time she heard whispers from her “uncle” of a son he could not face.
She tugged to his foreign clothes and pleaded to know more, but the wizard smiled politely to not remember his past.

She hummed a soft tune, and her uncle turned fast.
He asked the princess what she knew.
But just as Luna was ready to call the colt’s name, she felt her old fears longer through.
A distorted voice then wheezed to her.

“Nyx of Night knows nothing of right, nor not of shimmering light.
A deal was made by this steer, declared to never have magic in heir.
Forget past smiles and whispers while sleeping at bay. Never once fair princess did you miss those memories I’ve taken away.”
