> You've Got to Hide Your Love Away > by M18 Hellcat > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- > Chapter 1: A Lack of Time > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- The city of Canterlot was bustling, and a young light charcoal grey unicorn moved through the street, her crimson mane flowing slightly in the wind, as she moved to her private voice lesson, after her lecture at the Canterlot School for Gifted Unicorns ended. Her red eyes scanned the signs above doors for the tell tale Treble Clef emblem of the music studio. The Unicorn found it rather quickly, and opened the door a greeting quickly coming from a charcoal mare with a rose bowtie around her neck, exiting her office. "Good Afternoon, Debtone! You're in room 24A today!" said the mare towards Debtone. "Thanks Octavia!" said Debtone as she went down the hallway to the instruction rooms. Debtone advanced reading the numbers as they counted upwards from one to 30 on each side, one side reading A, the other reading B, until she reached 24, and entered with her teacher, Ms. Whole Note, a Sapphire Colored Mare, with a rich golden mane. "Good Afternoon, Debtone. Shall we begin" asked the Mare. "Yes we Shall." replied the filly. The two started their vocal lesson with simple scales, before moving onto the solo Debtone was working on. "Here I stand head in hoof, turn my face to the wall. If he's gone, I can't go on. Feeling two foot small....." started the filly. "You need to use more emotion Deb, you're just saying it now!" said her teacher Deb sighed and repeated the verse, her teacher correcting different mistakes each time. The work continued until about 6 pm, there was work to be done but her teacher had to call it a day. Deb still had her work for her lectures to do! She dashed off to her dormitory to finish up before the next days classes, which involved going across town, back to campus. The gray filly ended up having to stop at a diner to get a meal, as her stomach was howling for food at this point having not eaten for going on 8 or 9 hours. The meal was quick and cheap, due to her being on a students budget, and Deb continued on her way. It was well after dark when Deb opened the door to her dormitory, and moved to her desk, which has a large show choir poster hanging above it with a multitude of bronze, silver and gold medals and trophies, trying to get her work done before the bell tolled midnight. _________________________________________________________________________________________________ The next morning Debtone awoke to her roommate Aura poking her forehead. Aura had a rich azure coat, with her motherly lavender eyes looking down towards Deb, her rich blue hued mane already made up for the day. Aura was a rather special unicorn, she was gifted with a magnificent understanding of magic, but more specifically emotional magic. Aura started reading the base emotions of ponies at a very early age, something even adept unicorns didn't do till they were mature. "Wake up Deb, you're going to miss the lecture!" said the light Prench accent of Aura. Deb's eyes fluttered to life at the saying of her missing a lecture. She quickly rose from her bed and began hastily getting ready for the day. "Oh No! Where's my assignment!" said the despaired voice of Debtone as she ran around collecting her things. "On your desk where you left it last night." said the azure mare. "Oh." Deb quickly grabbed the assignment and rushed out of her dormitory, towards her Advanced Magic class. The class was an average run of the mill magic classroom, except from this day on, as the original professor left due to family reasons. Debtone was in for a major surprise, when she learns of her new professor. Deb arrived at the lecture hall and quickly took her seat mere seconds before the 8 o' clock bell rang, meaning class had begun. Walking from behind the curtain, came a lavender colored alicorn, and Deb was pretty sure her jaw was on the floor. "Good Morning class, I'm your new professor. Ms. Twilight Sparkle." said the alicorn as she reached the podium. Deb was speechless, her role model Princess Twilight Sparkle, was going to be teaching her magic. This was like a dream come true. "Now, if you could please open up your spellbooks to page 268, we will begin with advanced levitation magic." said the Princess. Deb sighed opening her book, this was a great start to the day. She thought it couldn't get any better. After class, and having a short chat, with Twilight who had called her over to offer assistance if Deb had needed it with the advanced studies. Debtone was a first year student after all. She went to the small cafeteria the campus provided. Although it was only about 11:30 the cafeteria was still packed. Deb entered the line getting, her usual meal of baked oats and hay toast. Her lunch wouldn't last long as Deb looked at the clock. If she didn't leave now she'd be late for her lesson! Deb hastily finished her meal and began the across town trip to the recording studios. The trip would be rather uneventful until she got onto the street the studios were on. Which happened to be blocked off due to a crashed carriage. Deb would have to go around. By the time Deb got into the studio, she was 5 minutes late. Or so she thought. When Deb entered the hallway and found her room, there was her teacher with another one of her students. Deb brought one hoof up and smacked herself on her face. She didn't care if they said it killed brain cells. She misread the clock and now her entire schedule was off. "This is what I get for being so hasty." said Debtone as she walked back out of the hallway.
