> Acorn > by That Lonely Girl > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- > Chapter 1 > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- "Mommy, why don't I have wings like you and daddy?" Acorn said, looking at the floor. "Because you're special,” Her mom said, kissing her forehead. "But... " She paused, thinking about what had happened at school, "But the rest of the fillies in Cloudsdale have wings" she finished. She poked at the floor, studying it. Her mother pushed her head up and she looked into her eyes. "I love you, my little Acorn, it doesn't matter that you're different," She said and smiled. Acorn Smiled, but she was still thinking about what happened the other day... "Okay mommy," Acorn said. She trotted into her bedroom, trying to look happy. She asked her mom these types of questions a lot, and she always got the same answer. She lay down on her cloud bed, staring up at the ceiling that was covered in little glow-in-the-dark stars. She smiled. She liked stars. Well, she like real stars more than these, but the fake stars where closer. Then sometimes at night, when they would light up, it would seem like she was flying up to look at the real stars… *crash* “Mommy?” Acorn jolted upright from her bed and tilted her head to the side. “Are you okay Mommy?” she said, a little louder this time. Acorn slid of her bead, and walked to her door, pushing it open and peering outside. She scurried out of her room. Her mom was cringing, and stepping away from the cutting knife on the floor. Acorn gasped. “Mommy are you okay?” she squeaked, running over to her mom’s side. “I’m fine sweaty.” She said, slightly gasping, “I just scraped myself, I’m okay.” She had a cut in her front leg. “Should I get Daddy?” Acorn asked. She was almost crying. She gingerly touched her leg below the cut. “Is there anything I can do?” She asked anxiously. “Its okay honey, ill take care of it,” her mother said, “just the bandage for me please.” “Okay Mommy,” Acorn said, sniffling and walking over to the cupboard to get the bandage roll. * * * “Are you sure you’re okay Cherry?” Ash asked, looking concerned. “Yep.” She said cheerfully, holding her hoof over the bandage on her leg. “Okay,” He said, “where’s Acorn? Is she in her room?” He asked. “Yes, I think,” she replied. Ash walked down the short hallway to Acorns room, and he pushed open the door and peeked in. “Hello,” he said. “Daddy!” Acorn jumped off her bed and skipped over to him. “How are you? How was your day? Did anything interesting happen?” She said as she hugged him. “I’m great, my day was great and nothing interesting happened,” He said, sounding as if he were counting out his answers to the questions. He smiled and hugged her back. “Guess what?” Ash said. “What?” Acorn asked, a hint of excitement in her voice. “One of the princesses is coming to Cloudsdale next weekend for the spring festival!” Acorn gasped and widened her eyes. “Really, really, really?” She said hopping up and down. She had always wanted to see one of the princesses. Her parents had told her about them before, but she wanted to meet one for real. “Does that mean you want to go to the celebration?” He asked, jokingly. “Mhm!” She replied * * * The wind was blowing stronger than usual. It was also colder than it normally was, even for early spring. Acorn skipped on her way to school, not being able to think of anything other the spring celebration that was taking place tomorrow. She hummed a little song that she had heard the other day, she couldn’t remember the name but it was a happy sounding song. “Ugh, she is so weird.” Acorn turned to see where this voice had come from. It was one of the fillies from school. Purple Rose was her name, she though. There was another pony with her. Acorn couldn’t remember her name, but she had seen her at school before. “Oh, hi Rose,” Acorn said. Rose gave her a look that said ‘whatever loser’, before turning and around and flicking her tail. The other pony did the same, though she tripped at little when she turned around. Rose shot her a glare. The other pony skipped awkwardly after her. Acorn sighed. At least they didn’t do anything that mean to her. Acorn continued on her way to school. Then she stopped. Why hadn’t the other ponies been going the way she was? Class started in about an hour, she though, where were they going? She looked back at the two ponies, puzzled. “Look out-“ Acorn hit collided with some pony that had been coming her way. Acorn stumbled back, and tried to retain her balance. “S-sorry,” Acorn said and looked up to see whom she had hit. “Princess… Luna?” She stammered, unable to believe that this was happening. Luna shook her head back and forth and looked up. “Hello,” Luna said, smiling. Acorn just stared. “Are you okay, little one?” Luna said. Acorn nodded her head, her eyes still wide with amazement. “I’m fine,” Acorn whispered. “Well that’s good” Luna said, patting Acorn on the head. “Yah,” Acorn said, even quieter. Luna walked past her. Acorn kept her eyes on the princess until she couldn’t see her anymore. “Wow…” she murmured. * * * Acorn looked around the class. Rose and her friend weren’t anywhere to be found. “Hey look, it’s the loser without wings.” Acorn heard giggling behind her. She didn’t look back. There wasn’t any point. Everyone in class made fun of her. She laid her head on the table and looked out the window. “Acorn?” She opened her eyes and snapped into focus. She looked sat up and noticed that everyone was looking at her. “Is she here?” the teacher asked again, glancing around the class. “Here” Acorn said, sighing. The teacher marked her down on the attendance. “I can’t believe it, she fell asleep” a filly in front of her whispered to someone beside her. Acorn held her hoofs in front of her face, not wanting anyone to see her. She couldn’t do anything right, could she? > Chapter 2 > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Acorn ran the edge of her hoof down the window in her bedroom, peering out at the setting sun. She sat down only an inch away from the window, not breaking eye contact with the pink and orange sky. She looked up to a darker-blue part of the sky. A couple of stars had started to appear, and she smiled at them. “Hello stars,” she whispered. A dark shape covered one of the stars, but it was too small to be a cloud. Acorn widened her eyes in realization. She got up slowly, and then sneaked out of her room. Her parents were in their room, so acorn could go through the kitchen towards the front door. She reached up to the lock on the door, and after a couple of tries she was able to unlock it. She carefully opened the door and closed it behind her. She walked around to the side if the house with her window, and she looked up at the sky. The sun had almost set, and the yellow sphere was just peeking out over the edge of the land. She looked to the dark sky opposite where the sun was. She could see a small white light that seemed to originate from below the southern mountains. She glanced back up at the shape, a faint glow emitting from the top of it now. She was sure she knew who it was. The moon had risen over the mountains, and the glow coming from the shape was diming. “Wow…” Acorn said, and soon realized she had said it a bit too loud. She looked up at the shape, which was coming closer to her. Though she was pretty sure who it was, the feeling of something dark, and slightly scary coming towards her was a little unnerving. The shape landed in front of her, and the glow came again, much brighter because of how close it was. Luna’s face appeared under the glow, which Acorn now knew was coming from her horn. “You should be inside,” Luna said quietly, a faint smile on her face. Acorn nodded, unable to stop looking at the almost mesmerising moon. Luna noticed where she was looking. “its quite amazing, isn’t it? Then moon. Even though its my job to raise it at night, I don’t know much about it,” Luna said. She laughed a little. “I guess I find it funny that I don’t know much about something I see every day,” she said, “but,” she paused, “I think you would know a lot about not knowing stuff huh?” Luna asked, almost concerned. Acorn looked back at her lack of wings, sighing. “What’s your name?” Luna said. “Its… Acorn,” she said. “Well, Acorn, its okay to be different.” Luna said. “But I want to have wings!” Acorn said. She glanced awkwardly to the side. Luna hugged her. Acorn opened her mouth to say something, but she closed it again. Luna released her from the hug, and smiled at her. She took off into the night sky. Acorn sat there for quite a while. What exactly had happened? She decided to go back inside. * * * “Wake up sleepy head,” her mom said, kissing her forehead lightly. Acorn jolted out of bed. “Are you okay sweetie?” her mom asked. Acorn looked the window, then at her mom. “I’m fine,” she said, giggling, “just a little jumpy.” Acorn strained to remember what had happened the previous night. She didn’t have a very good memory, plus, something just seemed… wrong. She shook her head slightly, trying to clear her thoughts. “Are you exited about tonight?” Her mom asked. Acorn looked at her and smiled. “Yah,” Acorn said. She looked back out the window, her thoughts taking a backseat to the bright blue sky and pinkish-sunrise clouds.
