> Entwined > by janushyde > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- > Failsafe > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- It was impossible; she had been bested, again! It wasn’t even by her sister a fellow goddess this time either! No it had been by a group of mortal foals lead by some upstart unicorn filly! Well just because she had been beaten didn’t mean she would go quietly. As the wretched light drew closers Nightmare Moon split a fraction of her off and flung the fragment at the lavender unicorn then she awaited the final blow to fall. As the rainbow of harmony unleashed the full force of its power upon the corrupted moon princess unnoticed by all a small sliver of dark energy struck Twilight Sparkle in her chest quickly absorbing into the young mare. This instant in time would go on to have a lasting impact upon not just Twilight Sparkle but the entity known as Nightmare Moon tying their fates together in a way that even the Nightmare hadn’t expected. Some hours later after Princess Celestia had assigned Twilight her new task of studying the magic of friendship Twilight had returned to her new library home setting herself and her assistant Spike to the task of cataloging and resheleving the library in hopes of making it easier for her or anypony else to find what they needed should the need arise. Unknown to Twilight she wasn’t as alone in her thoughts as she had assumed she was. Well this has turned out far better than I could ever have hoped for. Not only have I once more cheated death, I have also found myself a new vessel worthy of the privilege of hosting me. Barer of the element of magic and prized pupil of Celestia, Oh yes this will do nicely with some careful manipulation I’ll sawy this unicorn to my side and soon all shall be enshrouded in the glorious darkness of my beautifull eturnal night. Nightmare Moon purred to herself after she awoke she began to delve into the memories of her new host. While she may be too weak to do much else at the moment that didn’t mean that she could afford to be idle. If she was to bend this Twilight Sparkle to her will she would need to know how the mare thought, her hopes, dreams, strengths, weaknesses everything about her. It is often said that knowledge is power and nowhere is that more true than in the realm of the mind itself. The more that Nightmare learned about her new host the stronger she would become, after a while she would be able to assert herself more in small ways like interfearing with the mare’s dreams and after a while even directly communicating with her. Once she could talk with twilight then she could begin her true task that of swaying the young unicorn’s loyalty to herself away from the princess of the sun, perhaps even convincing the filly to let her take control of the body, or even better constructing her a new body to live in after all it would be a waste of resources to simply discard such a keen intellect merely so she could be in the driver’s seat. Not to mention the blow it would strike against Celestia to see that her “Most faithful Student” had been turned against her devastation seemed to be a fitting turn for the impact that would have, not just upon Celestia but her friends as well. Oh yes, you will be mine Twilight Sparkle you can bet on that. It is only a matter of time before you will fall; soon you will hang off my every word heed my every command and renounce your mentor to her face. In time you will grow to wonder why you ever followed her teachings in the first place. I will be your world all that will matter to you will be the simple act of pleasing me and that will be all you will ever need’ Nightmare vowed to herself as she resumed her work of examining in detail the memories of her newest host. Twilight remained unaware of all of this for two reasons. The first being that she had yet to delve into the vast and complex field of study known as mental magic; the second reason was that while the fragment of Nightmare Moon had the memories and ambitions of her larger self she was far too weak to the moment to be detected even by the best telepaths. While this left her unable to influence her host it also granted her the boon of free movement for the time being allowing her to work without fear thus giving her the lead that she would need to begin her plans. > Sights ans slights > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Three, weeks it had taken three weeks but it had finally happened her power had regenerated enough to allow Nightmare Moon to make use of her new host’s senses. Before her power had strengthened enough to allow this she had to make do by waiting for the mare to fall asleep or be otherwise distracted from events so see could view her most recent memories. While she could not directly communicate with her host she decided to exorcize cautiion just to be sure she couldn’t be detected on the off chance they both wanted to view the same memory at the same time. This isn’t to say that she was idle during that time span. Far from it in fact she had spent that time delving into and exploring the memories of her host learning all that she could about Twilight Sparkle the mare with the honor of being her newest vessel. There was far more to this mare then Nightmare had first thought. When she had confronted twilight she was under the impression that Celestia had spent years prepping the young unicorn for the confrontation. However this turned out to be false. Twilight was no hardened battle mage raised to wield the Elements of Harmony so as to purify Luna and return balance to the kingdom. Instead she was merely an over egot scholar who had blundered upon the knowledge needed seemingly by accident. Still This unicorn had a keen mind and incredible potential not just as a wielder of arcane power but with the proper training she could be an excellent advisor maybe even a vizier or chandler as well. While the possibility of turning her into a tactician is there that would take far more subtle manipulation. As enticing as plans for her future position by her Queen’s side were Nightmare had to remind herself that it would be months yet before she would even have the ability to interact with her host in the necessary ways to sway the young mage to her side. For now her best option is simply to observe her hosts’ day to day behavior to see what that would reveal about the mare. While she already knew how much of Twilight’s self worth is wrapped up in Celestia’s opinion that could be changed with carefully chosen words and subtle action when the time was right. So she decided to let Twilight herself show her what she needed. “Come on Twilight that’s Twenty-five kinds of magic tricks and counting!” Spike declared his excitement and pride clearly visible with the energy he put into the statement. Oh yes an impressive list of spells yet none of them see terribly useful to me. I think I’ll have to start nudging her to expanding her repitware as soon as possible. Nightmare mused to herself as the two left the library to find their friends and show them Twilight’s progress. Shortly after the two left they were greeted by two rather young looking colts that began to babble excitedly about some stage magician who had set up in the town square. The duo decided to see what all the fuss was about and headed to the square as well soon falling into place near the rest of their friends. Oh wonderful watching some overhyped performer alongside the beings who caused my downfall I cannot contain my boundless joy. She deadpanned as the stagechoach began to expand into a small portable stage. As the performance of “the Great and Powerful Trixie” wore on Nightmare soon changed her attitude as Twilight’s conversation with her friends revealed so rather pertinent information to her. Oh-ho how lovely herself imposed solitary life has made her so very insecure about how her new found friends see her. I can make use of this oh yes I can. Nightmare chuckled to herself hearing the fear creep into her host’s voice as she discussed the performer and her arrogance with her friends. Moments after this Trixie brought up her supposed besting of an Ursa Major to the crowd further enthralling them with her commanding stage presence. Oh do shut up you useless mortal had you any real talent for the art that is magic you wouldn’t be so reliant upon smoke and mirrors. Though I must admit I do find it odd to be agreeing with the bearers of the Elements of Harmony about anything, she groused to herself as she continued to observe through Twilight’s eyes. What happened next however came as a delightful treat to the mare of darkness. Three of the bearers took turns challenging the ability of Trixie and each of them was humiliated by the show mare. While this was a most cathartic experence for Nightmare it was also somewhat insulting to know that she had been bested by those ponies herself and here were they were being shown up by a lowly street performer! The true blow to her selfworth however came from her host refusing to challenge the mare. Fool! Have you no pride, no dignity! Get back there and FACE HER! Nightmare raged her cries echoing unheard through the mind of her host. As Twilight retreated back to her home, Upon returning to the library Twilight had grabbed a book off the shelf and immediately headed up to her room with it. Oh yes, take confort from a book why don’t you THAT’S healthy! Nightmare snapped as Twilight opened the book and began to study its contents. Studying about ursa’s are we? Well it’s a start I guess maybe she’ll try and tame one to show up that worthless filly who dares to adorn her cloak and cap with my beloved stars and moon! Once I am free I’ll have to find this mare and put her in her place for attempting to co-opt my creations. Nightmare mumbled to herself as she watched her host read up on the cosmic creature. It was hours later not long after nightfall when Spike burst into the library clamoring for Twilight’s attention. He’s a persistent little whelp I’ll give him that much you’d think have the door literally slammed in his face would clue him in on her final decision. Nightmare mused to herself as the two talked then a loud roar echoed across town and with a quick confirmation from Spike twilight was off to investigate the matter. Moments later they arrived in the town square to see the situation first hoof. I had thought that a town so close to the Everfree would have been better prepared for a situation like this. Though foresight never seems to come easy to mortals much less the coddled foals that Celestia has been overlooking for so long, Nightmare noted as she watched the ponies panic at the sight of the giant bear. Much to her own amusement the show mare attempted to prove her tall tail true and was soon uncovered for the fraud that she was. Still points for trying at least, that thundercloud looked big enough to kill had it been used on a pony. she chuckled to herself then to her amazement her host moved forward to attempted besting the creature herself. Fool what are you doing! You’ll kill us all! She raged once more her shouts going unheeded. What transpired next shocked Nightmare Moon to her core. Through careful and cleaver use of the spells she had practiced earlier that day, along with rather interesting new spell Twilight was able to pacify the Ursa Minor and send it back to its home deep in the Everfree Forest. Credit where credit is do my host I will admit you have impressed me this night. While you lacked the spells needed to slay the beast you showed the ability to do so while also avoiding a far more deadly situation in the process. Lulling the cub to sleep and returning it home was truly the wise move. Still those two foals nearly got the town destroyed when I’m free I think I’ll give them a good scare along with the show mare. Nightmare applauded twilight as the unicorn and her friends talked among themselves after the crises had passed. > Gathering intel > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- It had been another month and Nightmare moon could feel that her power was keeping up its steady rate of recuperation. While she still did not have the ability to directly communicate with her host yet she remained ever vigilant in her quest to gather information about her. It had seemed that fate threw her a bone as over the course of the month three rather interesting chain of events took place; first there had been the dragon that needed to be ousted, then came the incident with the Zebra and the discovery of a wonderful little plant called Poison Joke, finally there was the parasprite infestation. Each of these little episodes yielded some useful information about either how the world had changed during her long banishment to the moon or some new information about her host that she could put to use. So as Twilight and Spike settled in for the night after a rather uneventful day of tending to the libraryamd later time for Twilight to practice her magic Nightmare Moon decided to reexamine the events of those days and confirm what she had learned from them. First there had been the dragon, for some reason a fully grown dragon had decided to use a mountain cave in Equestria for the duration of his century long nap. Normally this wouldn’t be an issue and would even be welcomed as this type of arraignment typicayl benefitted both parties the dragon would be left to sleep in peace and after awakening he would leave behind a small portion of his hoard in thanks. This dragon though had a snoring problem and needed to be ousted because the thick smoke he produced would choke the life out of the land if he was allowed to sleep uninterrupted. I wonder Celestia, what position are you grooming Twilight for that you would task her with this, is she to be a weapon, to lead the unicorn division of the Royal guard, or is she to be your arch mage? Nightmare had pondered to herself as Twilight explained to the citizens of Ponyville about the black smoke and what needed to be done about it. The young unicorn proceeded to round up the rest of the elements of harmony and head off to remove the dragon from the area.As the trip to the dragon’s lair progressed Nightmare Moon found she getting progressively more enraged. The source of her ire was two ponies Pinkie Pie, and Fluttershy. The former had a tendency to act as if her skull was empty and the latter’s fear was slowing their progress. For the love of THE MON how can you FUNCTION in life if you’re so weak willed and cowardly! It was bad enough that you couldn’t leap over a small crevice the rockslide however is inexcusable! There is a WORLD of difference between being afriad and being a BURDIN! Nightmare roared within Twilight’s mind her inability to properly express her frustration was driving her up the wall. In the end however Nightmare had to eat some crow when she saw Fluttershy react to the dragon’s strike against her host and the others due to the reckless actions of Rainbow dash. It wasn’t the words or even tone that the yellow Pegasus used rather it was the way the dragon responded to them. She made him cry I didn’t think her capable of speech to this creature let alone scolding him like a mother would her foal. Bitbo Baggins eat your heart out. She had mused as the dragon flew away from his cave. Upon further reflection however she had to reevaluate her opinion of Fluttershy once more. She seems to have a gift of great power a gift I had thought lost to the ages. The ability to not only communicate with animals but to dominate their wills, If I am correct this power could be used on equines as well and could even allow her to spot me dwelling within Twilight’s mind. I must take caution to suppress my presence whenever Twilight and Fluttershy make eye contact from now on. If this theory proved true her progress would have to slowed vastly in order to avoid being discovered, while she had no solid proof that Fluttershy bore this most ancient are rare gift it would be in her best interest to act as if she did. Being pleased with the conclusion she had drawn here Nightmare decided to move onto the next significant memory the events that lead to the zebra Zecora becoming a part of the Ponyville community. It had been about five days since the incident with the dragon. Twilight and Spike had some errands to run so they headed for the town square only to find it empty and to be hauled into Sugarcube Corner. After a brief and oddly panicked explanation about what had been going on Nightmare was a bit startled to find out the cause of all the panic it was a Zebra mare being accused of witchcraft. Really roughly a third of the population is able to actively use magic to some extent and you’re throwing around the old witchcraft argument? Still a slightly xenophobic song is better response then the nobles who wanted Celestia and Luna to cull the population centuries ago. Was her mental response to the attitudes of the other bearers of harmony As the day wore on things only continued to escalate as Applejack’s sister tried to shadow the Zebra and was quickly apprehended for her trouble, I’ll give the foal credit she has grown some since I last saw her cowering under a table upon sighting me those weeks ago. Though the real issue is why the Zebra issue a warning about the flowers, she had pondered to herself as the group returned to Ponyville The explanation came the next morning much to the delight of the dark alicorn. Each of the bearers had been given an affliction of sorts by the plant some were ironic such as Pinkie’s inability to speak and Applejack’s reduction in size while others just seemed to be targeting an aspect of the pony that they prided most Twilight’s magic and Rainbow Dash’s flight for example.‘As much as I enjoy the sight of them being humiliated like this I’d prefer not to have my host's ability to protect herself stripped away. I wonder how they’ll try and rectify this mess. Whatever method they use shall likely prove to be most amusing I just know I’m going to enjoy this. Nightmare pondered to herself as she settled in to watch the events to come. As Twilight and her friends blundered their way through the Everfree Forest toward Zecora’s hut the comedy of errors unfolded. Weather it was Rainbow’s airborne mishaps Has she honestly forgotten she can walk? to Pinkie’s continues failed attempts at conversation I rather prefer her this way if there’s anything worse than a bard it’s a bard who won’t shut up. The real treat however was hearing Fluttershy singing with that new voice of hers I find this both disturbing and funny, though it would be even better if she put some effort into the song. Soon however the group confronted Zecora and the whole misunderstanding was cleared up. As amusing at that was there was quite a bit of useful intelligence gathered that day. Twilight is rather forcefully opposed to the so called supernatural. It is rather odd how she seemed to refute the existence of non unicorn magic when given how much she knows about physics she knows that pegasi drawn carriages shouldn’t behave the way they do. Then there is that plant Poison Joke, I should have known of it but I didn’t unless it came into existence some time during my banishment I should memories of such a useful little thing. I wonder if I could convince Twilight to begin an in depth study of it. Finding out how it works could prove to be a vital asset to me in the future especially if I can learn how to manipulate the effects it induces. Hmm perhaps I can also convince her to take up alchemy as well, having a backup plan for emergences is always useful and given how hungrily she devours texts on magical theory I’m surprised she hasn’t ventured into this field of study already. Nightmare reflected as she slid away from that memory and advanced upon the last one she wished to view for the night before resting herself. Two weeks after the encounter with Zecora had passed and Ponyville was abuzz with activity and for good reason Princess Celestia was coming for a visit. So Twilight was spearheading the effort to make things presentable for the occasion. For the most part things were well in Hoof. Streamers were hung, the banner was being redone and in spite of Pinkie’s interference the banquette seemed to be coming along then Fluttershy arrived and showed off her new found friend. A parasprite, how very interesting I had thought that those abominations of Discord's had long since been destroyed. It would seem however that they have managed to maintain their numbers in the Everfree somehow. Nightmare Moon thought to herself as Twilight left the bakery with the colorful insect nestled in her mane. The next morning When Twilight awoke she was shocked to see how the population of parasprites had surged while she slept. afriad that this would interfear with the day's events Twilight set off to see what could be done to stop disaster from befalling the princess visit. ‘Hmm let’s see how you conduct yourself here my host I wonder just how badly things will fall apart before Pinkie can pull your fat from the fire. I don’t know how she of all ponies knew about these pests when you didn’t but by some fluke she does. Nightmare purred enjoying seeing her host so clearly panicked by the thought of losing favor with Celestia. It was hours later and things were starting to get desperate at this point. After Fluttershy had proved that she had no control of the parasprite horde Twilight and her friends had tried rounding them up and driving them back into the Everfree Forest. Whatever progress had been made by this flash of inspiration had been voided when it was revealed that Fluttershy had kept one of the creatures in her house and as parasprites are want to do it multiplied like there was no Tomorrow. Next Rainbow dash had tried using a tornado to remove them. This plan was only foiled by Pinkie Pie who had arrived with a pair of crash cymbals that got swept up into the whirlwind causing Dash to lose control of it and spreading the parasprites over the town at large. I’ll give you credit those ideas of yours would have worked if not for dumb luck. Nightmare mused as Twilight raced back to town. As the time of Celestia’s visit drew ever closer Twilight’s desperation grew more and more apparent, weather it was her hasty attempt to stop the Parasprites eating all the food with magic. This resulted in them turning on other objects instead for example buildings. That’s interesting her spell would have worked on them just fine in my time. Or her flat out insane request of building a replica of the town in less than a minute I was enjoying watching this come crashing down around you Twilight, however that’s just sad. Useful no doubt about it but sad none the less, Nightmare chided before she could further voice her thoughts on the matter music began to swell and soon Pinkie Pie came into view decked out in a vast assortment of musical instruments playing away. Within seconds the ravenous hordes of parasprites stopped their destruction and began to move in time to Pinkie’s playing even following the mare as she trotted out of Ponyville and to the Everfree forest. It was about this time that Celestia arrived at the entrance to Ponyville. She thanked Twilight and the town at large for their efforts but claimed she was unable to keep her appointment as another nearby settlement was suffering from an infestation of its own. After Twilight gave her report for the week Celestia and her escort departed, So much learned from this little incident, parasprites are still around and seem to have dewlapped a defense to unicorn magic since I last came across them. Still they could be put to great use as a weapon be it the orginal untampered with breed or those that were altered by Twilight’s spell round them up and release them in upon an enemy nation and watch the destruction ensue. Now we come back to you my host, I’ll admit while perhaphs taken to an obsessive level your devotion to Celestia is to be admired. In time I intend to have your devotion directed to me, and I think that I know how to go about it all I need is time. Dear Celestia, you may have been trying to let her off the hook but in doing so you have given me a way to implant a seed of doubt in her heart once we can talk. Nightmare Moon thought her glee becoming more evident as her plans for Twilight developed. Brushing aside her inevitable manipulation she settled down to get some rest for the remainder of the night after all tomorrow was a new day that would yield new insights into her host and how to best earn her loyalty. > Her domain > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- It had taken another two days but finally her powers had grown strong enough for Nightmare moon to return to the realm of dreams. Seizing this opportunity the dark mare waited for her host to drift off into slumber so that her work could begin in erest. Dreams are such a splendid thing. They can take one to incredible hights, provide inspiration, give new insight into ourselves and others, bring fear, and alert us of danger. However there are more to them then being mere images brought up by the subconious mind, indeed they can be a means of communication between beings of the mortal or other plain and even act as gateways of a sort between the realm of the real and the surreal. Each dream is a world unto itself each with its own rules and while it is truly rare for dreams to be shared they are all connected to each other in subtle ways, creating the dreamscape the land of impossibilities. It was there in her darkest moment of fear and doubt where I was born of Luna’s jealousy, insecurity, and resentment. I have grown over time and claimed the dreamscape as my own and I am the ruler of this empire of dreams. Even now the realm lends it’s power to its empress feeding me strength so that I may once more sit upon the throne of my domain and in time expand my authority and you shall aid me Twilight Sparkle it will take time but you’ll see the truth and come to my side even if I must give you a gentle nudge in the proper direction. Nightmare mused to herself as she watched Twilight dream the dreams of the innocent. With each passing moment she subtlety manipulated the dream so that it would take the shape she needed to begin her work of reshaping the unicorn into something much greater then she already was. At first it was a simple meaningless dream just incoherent words and pictures. Overtime as Nightmare’s influence began to take hold things began to change. A simple narrative began to take form. Twilight spent the day with her friends at a picnic in the park. Laughter abounded as the six mares and young dragon ling enjoyed the company they kept. Then time began to pass and after a while the festivities were brought to an end. Twilight and Spike returned to their home in the library and were about to set to the task of cleaning up the kitchen when a letter from princess Celestia interrupted them. As soon as the letter had been opened and read a seemingly good day became even better as Twilight had been commended by an old professor at the school for gifted unicorns for her work in the field of arcane archeology. She would be expected to give a speech to prominent members of the community at a dinner to be held in her honor. Not second after Spike had finished reading the letter did the two find themselves in the dining hall at the school for gifted unicorns where the faculty was toasting to twilight’s good health. Time seemed to blur by as the evening progressed the tables were cleared and it was time for twilight to give her speech. So with modest hesitation twilight stood from her seat by Celestia’s side and cleared her throat before letting her feelings and modest nature guide her words. Her piece said Twilight thanked the community for their time and generosity for bestowing this commendation upon her once more taking her seat as applause thundered across the dining hall. Once more time seemed to shift and Twilight found herself back in her home in the Ponyville Library she was seated at her desk filing away the certificate she had been given when a voice, so very similar yet different to her own spoke up behind her. Is this it; is this all we are all we want to be?’ The voice inquired hesitation and even a tinge of resentment were audible in its tone. Twilight turned around to address the speaker and halted briefly upon seeing who it was. The speaker resembled her yet was different. She was shorter thinner almost sickly looking her coat and mane was a washed out monochromatic mirror of her own. Then there were the truly standout features about her eyes were dead black orbs, her horn was broken, however what was most jarring of all was the large empty cavity in her chest where her heart should have been. Pushing past her growing fear and dread Twilight voiced the question on her mind. “Who, what are you?” The other Twilight let out a single dry chuckle before responding. That’s the question of the day isn’t it? I could ask you the same. “I know who I am I’m Twilight Sparkle prized student of princess Celestia and bearer of the Element of Magic!” Twilight replied. Is that really all there is to you, a name and a few titles there must be more to you than that. The voice replied as it approached her stopping only a few feet away. “Of course not I have my friends, my family, and my position as the librarian in Ponyville! Now who are you and why do you look like me?” She retorted growing slightly flustered by this odd spirt and its questions. A better answer but it still doesn’t cut to the heart of the matter. I shall grant you an answer though. I am to be blunt your doubts fears, and anxieties given form’ Doubt curtly replied. “What do you mean by that, I have nothing to fear my life is finally on track now that I’ve got some friends to support me?” Twilight snapped. Once Twilight had stopped speaking Doubt grinned devilishly then began to pace circles around her. Oh, do you honestly believe that? I don’t think you do, otherwise you wouldn’t have been so insecure when your friends brought up their distaste of Trixie’s bragging. Nor would you have let such flimsy evidence lead you to jump to conclusions about Zecora, or panic so franticly during the parasprite incident. Be honest with yourself if you didn’t have these lingering fears and doubts I wouldn’t be here now would I. Doubt lectured coming to a halt in front of Twilight once more. “I… I don’t believe you! Sure I have some insecurity but so does everypony! It’s natural to make mistakes like those!” Was her hesitant response, Indeed it is that’s why I’m here to bring forth these issues so you can address them and keep from making the same mistakes twice. After all you may never know when others may need to count on you in a dire situation. The encounter with the dragon could have turned out far worse if Fluttershy hadn’t been able to reason with him in the end. Doubt cooed, Just think about what I had to say, that’s all I ask after all if you can’t trust yourself who can you trust? With those final words Doubt turned and cantered away fading into nothing as the dream was banished by the first rays of the morning sun. > Oppertunities > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- A day had passed since Nightmare Mon had made contact with Twilight in her dreams and so far things had been going swimmingly. Twilight had spent most of the following day deep in thought reconsidering her place in life and even began to ponder on some long term goals rather than stay content with the short term joys of life in Ponyville. However things didn’t stay quiet for long, the second day after first contact Twilight and Spike were out in one of Ponyville’s parks practicing some transfiguration magic when Pinkie Pie made herself known through her antics, which included darting around conspicuously and wearing a rather outlandish umbrella hat. After capturing her attention and receiving an odd explanation about the motivation behind her oddly cautious behavior Nightmare set to work. Don’t be so quick to judge remember it was this kind out of outright dismissal that landed us in so much trouble with the Poison Joke. She advised. Who knows this could even lead to a whole new field of magic to study. She proposed hoping to spark twilight's intrest in the subject. If this Pinkie sense is indeed what I expect it to be than I have been underestimating Pinkie Pie. This type of expression of bardic power is incredibly rare it was almost unheard of even in my own time; however given her nature as the bearer of the element of laughter I should have seen a surprise like this coming. The real issue however is that Pinkie is unable to fully utilize this ability while understandable given it’s extreme rarity this is something of a setback as it limits her ability to turn this power to Twilight’s and by extension my own favor. Nightmare Moon mused to herself as Twilight walked into a ditch while arguing with Spike. As the day progressed Twilight became more stubborn so Nightmare Moon returned to her work. Is it really so hard to believe that there are types of magic that are unknown to unicorns at large? After all we only know what we do now because of dedicated research, even that can be insufficient at times weather it be because or bias, lost documentation or the knowledge being deemed too dangerous for the public at large to have access to. She admonished her host as the unicorn climbed out of the ditch and began to head back to the library seeming to ignore both Nightmare’s words and Applejack’s inquiry. Once she had arrived at her destination “I can’t believe I’m doing this, but I won’t risk making the same mistake twice. It just HAD to be prophetic ability, one of the most uncertain branches or magic know to pony kind.” Twilight signed and started to search the stacks for a tome that could hold the answers to this frustrating situation. Within moments she had gathered a small stack of texts on there art of Divination and the pony’s credited throughout Equestrian history as being oracles, prophets, and seers of the future. Once satisfied with her selections Twilight set to work on scouring the texts for the secrets they held. Hours had passed and while Twilight had refreshed her knowledge of many great prophets and seers, yet none of them seemed to share Pinkie’s method of prediction. Though each prophet did seem to have their own favored method; some read tea leaves, others gazed into a basin of water in the moonlight, others still used more gruesome methods like reading the entrails of dead animals, some simply found what they sought through their dreams or meditative trances. However Pinkie pie’s method seemed more akin to channeling a spirit rather than just gazing into what had yet to be. “Still no confirmation on Pinkie sense though I did learn more about ritual and artifact magic so I guess this wasn’t a total waste of time.” Twilight murmured to herself as she settled down for a quick nap, hoping that some rest would leave her refreshed and ready to resume her work later. You have no idea how close you came to finding your answer without realizing it my dear host, perhaps I’ll inform you of the true nature of Pinkie’s abilities once you fully trust me. Nightmare pondered she was getting ready to go delving into Twilight’s dreams when the door to the library burst open revealing Applejack and Pinkie Pie, the latter of the two rushing up to Twilight and began to shake her in a panic! Startling Twilight from her slumber, and almost making her fall off the couch she was resting on. “Twilight hurry my Pinkie sense is telling me that something awful is going to happen at Froggy Bottom Bog!” She exclaimed It took a few seconds for Twilight to process Pinkie’s rushed warning. When the meaning of the words sunk in her eyes widened as she realized what this could mean if Pinkie was right, while she was still reluctant to put her faith in Pinkie sense she wasn’t so sure of herself as to risk Fluttershy’s life. “What! But that’s where Fluttershy is... we’ve got no time to lose!” Twilight exclaimed rolling to her hooves and following the two out the door. Moments later the trio found themselves at the entrance to the bog where they caught sight of Fluttershy releasing the last of the frogs she had with her into the wetland. Once they spotted her group let a collected sight of relief as she seemed to be in no imminent danger. Hearing the noise behind her Fluttershy turned around to find out what it was and to her delight she spotted Twilight AppleJack and Pinkie Pie.“Hello everypony it’s nice of you to join me out here but I was just about ready to go home and-“Whatever Fluttershy was going to say next was cut off by a coughing fit brought on because of some caustic green mist that was rising up around them all. As the mist continued to rise it began to choke them all and even caused them to miss a very important detail the sight of four long reptilian necks surfacing from the water around them. However they soon discovered they weren’t alone when Pinkie Pie began to shiver violently and the motion caused her to bump into one of the long necks of the hydra that had risen up around them. This was a fortunate turn of events as it alerted the four friends to the danger they had been exposed to. It was only through luck that the four ponies were able to run fast enough to get away from the beast once they had discovered it looming over them. Twilight quickly spotted a large hill that they could flee to and directed the group that way meanwhile the gears began to turn in Nightmare Moon’s mind. This is quite the opportunity a chance to test her skill and worthiness to be my host. With just a few carefully chosen words I can coax her to take a decisive action that will both save the life of her friends and be a way to drive a wedge between her and Celestia. Nightmare schemed without another word she set to work. We have to take action here, getting to safety is a priority yes. Yet is that enough, how do we know this hydra will just go back to sleep after all is said and done? There is a good chance it could follow us back to Ponyville, or worse yet get lost trying to follow us and stumble across another town. She informed letting the possibilities play out in Twilight’s mind as she reached the top of the hill where Pinkie Fluttershy, and Applejack waited for her. ”You girls go ahead and start crossing the gap one at a time I’ll buy you some time!” Twilight exclaimed she then turned around and faced the hydra that was rapidly approaching them Studying it’s movements briefly before rushing forward making use of her smaller size and better mobility to pass right underneath the great beast’s legs as she expected it tried to snap her up during her stunt yet only three of its heads pursued her. This divide in attention and shift in its center of gravity caused it to topple over the result being the lone head that had remained focused on her friends being temporarily flattened by its own bulk. Twilight used this opportunity to sneak by and began to ascend the hill once more. Yet she kept a careful eye on her soon to be pursuer. This it turned out was a wise idea as once the hydra had righted itself the head that had been flattened seemed to discipline the others snapping and roaring at them apparently this one was the one in charge of the body at large.Good you know what that means, if you were to fell that head the others will follow. Now be quick about it! Nightmare instructed her host using her adrenalin fogged mind to her advantage. Twilight in the heat of the moment agreed and took action she grabbed hold of a large rock with her telekinesis and waited for the hydra to turn her way ignoring the shouts of her friends. Once she had her target in sight she took careful aim and let loose throwing the rock with all her might. The rock roared through the air, soaring with a speed that would make Rainbow Dash proud. Seemingly no sooner had she tossed her weapon than it had struck home in the right eye of the head she had aimed at and to the shock of all around tore out through the back of the beasts’ head and disappeared into the distance as the hydra fell over backward dead before it had hit the ground. The rest of the day passed as a blur to Twilight, the horrified reactions of her friends, returning to Ponyville, informing the princess about what she had done even going to sleep hours later. None of these things would register with her. Sure she had saved her friend’s lives but at what cost. Did the lives of her and the others outweigh that of the hydra; was it really as big a threat as she believed it to be, would her friends and the princess understand could they forgive her or could she even forgive herself for this? These questions haunted her until sleep crept up on her. Nightmare smiled to herself as she guided her host into slumber, chasing away her host’s doubts and questions granting her host a deep sleep full of only the most pleasant of dreams that night. While she had planned to delve into Twilight’s dreams each night she had to amend her plans some. Right now Twilight didn’t need Doubt what she needed was validation that her actions were just and what better way to do so than to grant her a peaceful night full of pleasant dreams to sooth her troubled mind? For the next week Nightmare Moon let Twilight rest at ease, granting her easy slumber and beautiful dreams. In her host'a waking hours she would whisper soothing words of reassurance even as her friends acted a bit reserved around her and Celestia’s response weighed upon her. Then one day as Pinkie, Rarity, and Applejack were helping her reorganize the library something came up to distract Twilight from the events that had been plaguing her. Rainbow Dash came crashing into the tree shaking the freshly sorted books from their shelves and undoing in seconds what had taken the four mare’s hours to do. Once Fluttershy had arrived and explained the reason why Rainbow had clolided with the tree this time, Informing Twilight of the competition that the athletic Pegasus had been gearing up for along with the trick she intended to use as her coup de grace. Bah, a stream of colored light and they go gaga, yet when I arrange the stars as a beautiful tapestry of points of light and contrasting darkness my work is shunned. Typical mortals had I over indulged in color I’m sure that I would have gained the adoration of the masses. Nightmare grumbled to herself before she could begin another triad though Rarity began to prompt Twilight to find a spell that would allow the wingless members of the sextet to come to Cloudsdale and cheer her on. Within short order Pinkie Pie had tossed a book to twilight and instructed her to turn to page Twenty-seven. Upon turning to the aforementioned page both host and hosted widened their eyes in surprise. Deadalus woven wings? The fool was allowed to publish this deathtrap’ Nightmare inquired as Twilight set about casting the spell on Rarity. As if the impressive light show wasn’t telling enough Twilight’s shortness of breath soon put a halt on any thoughts of casting this spell on the rest of the group. All was not lost though, when within the same book on a different page a spell that allowed for cloud walking was found and cast in short order as it would be far less taxing on the lavender unicorn. Sometime later the five friends found themselves seated in the stands waiting for the competition to begin. Witch it did after Celestia and the judges made their arrival within the stadium. Soon the contest was well under way with talented fliers from across Equestria strutting their stuff. Some like number Seven performed daring displays or acrobatics and agility others like number Nine displayed speed that made the heart pump and the jaw drop. However the biggest surprise was contestant Thirteen she was a griffon and not just any griffon but it was Gilda an old friend of Dash’s. her performance was astounding with a grace that seemed impossible for her frame and a precision timing that allowed her to pull out of seemingly fatal dives she wowed the spectators with her impressive display. As impressive as her performance had been though Gilda wasn’t the center of attention. No that was Rarity who had finally immerged to perform in a combination of elegant dancing and outlandish costume and makeup. However what really wowed the crowd was the colorful display of the sunlight shining through her wings. The wonder was cut short however when the heat of the sunlight burned her artificial wings and sent her plummeting to her doom. Tragedy was averted on this day by Rainbow Dash finally performing a Sonic Rainboom. Fortune smiled upon Dash this day as she was awarded the grand prize. During her brief meeting with the group Princess Celestia seemed to be eying Twilight closely. Scan all you want dear Sister, you couldn’t spot me within Luna nor shall you do so within Twilight. Nightmare boasted to herself as Celestia’s piercing gaze was unable to detect her presence once more. Twilight however lost her good cheer when she saw Gilda slinking out of the stadium seemingly forgotten by the crowd. “Would you girls mind waiting a little longer, there’s something I’d like to do before we leave?” She inquired after receiving a nod of acceptance from her friends Twilight raced out after Gilda. It took a few minutes for persistent tailing but the griffon finally seemed to give up on shaking her tale and stopped near the entrance of an alley. “Well dweeb, you got my attention what do you want? Have you come to throw my failure in my face, or are you here to try and me out of this town like your pink friend did in Ponyville.” She barked out clearly upset at the disturbance of her solitude. “Not at all, in fact I wanted to congratulate you, your performance it was simply, stellar! I also wanted to introduce myself seeing how we didn’t get a chance to talk back in Ponyville. My name is Twilight Sparkle and it’s a pleasure to meet you!” Twilight beamed extending her hoof toward Gilda. “Well at least you seem to know talent when you see it. Your one of Dash’s new friends right? So why did you really come to meet me?” She grumbled eyeing Twilight’s hoof uneasily. “Like I said came to congratulate you and introduce myself. Though I’ll admit I also wanted to talk to you about Rainbow Dash. I know she hurt you but you have to admit you put her in a rough spot making her choose between friends like that.” Twilight said never breaking eye contract with Gilda. “What do you care she chose you lome-o ponies over me anyway!” Gilda shouted getting ready to take off however Twilight’s next words froze her on the spot. “I care because I want to be your friend! I wanted to be your friend back at the party, if Rainbow Dash thought so highly of you than you must be a really good griffon! Besides getting to know you would help me get to know Dash better. I bet you have some great stories about your time together in Flight School.” She explained. Gilda sat down and pondered what Twilight had just told her after a moment she seemed to have made a choice.“Humph, don’t get a sappy on me dweeb. I’ll tell you what though I’ll think about what you said and I’ll look up later once I’ve made my choice. If you’re pulling my leg though I’ll make sure you regret this got it?” She replied taking off once Twilight agreed. Once back at the balloon she informed her friends that she had gone off to congratulate one of the other competitors and got busy talking explaining her absence to the group. They nodded their acceptance and soon they were off to Ponyville for a good night’s rest. That night Twilight was ploughed by horrible dreams. Her concern over Rarity’s brush with death was the source of this problem. Each dream was different, sometimes Rainbow dash saved her, mere inches from death other times she didn’t. In the dreams where Rarity didn’t make it her friends turned upon her. They blamed her for casting such an unstable spell on Rarity, for not trying to grab her in mid air with her telekinesis, In one case though by far the most horrible of these dreams they accused her of weakening the spell, after all it was meant to last for three days yet Rarity only had her wings for a few hours before they burnt out by the sun. Twilight got no rest that night. Upon waking the next day Twilight was weary, tense, and somewhat unfocused. However her mood brightened when she recalled that Zecora had invited her over for tea this afternoon. Just the thought of a good cup of tea and a friend to talk with helped her to relax some and kept her from being as irritble as she could have been. As she made her way through town to the Everfree forest she was nearly bowled over by the Cutie Mark Crusaders, after regaining her barings she was greeted by Fluttershy, who explained that she was in charge or the trio of trouble makers for the day.I pity her I would rather face the dragon than deal with children for such an extended length of time. Nightmare mused while she suppressed her presence within Twilight’s mind still being cautious when her host was around the soft spoken mare. After Twilight bid Fluttershy and the crusaders a good day she was back on her way. Nightmare took this opportunity to prod her host a bit.Perhaps we should take her advice; there is a spell that allows one to store items in a small pocket of magic for convenience. It would be wise to have some water and food on hoof in case of an emergency. Better yet having some means to defened ourselves with should the need arise’ Nightmare suggested to her amazement she got a response. I know the spell you’re talking about Doubt and that does seem like a good idea. While nothing has happened to me in the Everfree yet it could easily turn into a disaster but after the whole ordeal with the hydra I’m not so sure if I should listen to you.’ She replied continuing on her way. The hydra and its ilk are exactly why we need to take extra precaution not to mention the possibility of getting lost. Nightmare said hoping to sway Twilight to take her advice and build some more trust with the mare. I know you’re just looking out for me Doubt but I don’t think you need to worry, look we’ve already made it. Twilight chirped pointing out the tree house in the clearing just up ahead. She happily strode up to the dwelling and knocked on the door. Moments later the door opened revealing a smiling Zecora “Hello Twilight my Friend, upon your timeliness I can always depend.” She greeted standing aside to allow Twilight entrance to her home. “Thank you Zecora, I’m so glad you invited me over I didn’t get much rest last night and a cup of tea and some good company is just what I need right now.” She said while making her way to the small table in the center of the room where a tea service set awaited the two of them. “It is no trouble at all, I’m always willing to help with a problem be it big or small.” Zecora replied as she poured some sweet smelling tea into their cups then took a seat across from her friend “So what is it that forbids you sleep, did you get too caught up in counting sheep?” She joked taking a sip from her cup. “No, it wasn’t that I know some meditation methods for dealing with a restless mind. It was just some nightmares is all.” Twilight began than she proceeded to explain the events of the most recent Young Fliers competition to her Zebra friend who listened to her story intently letting her get the ordeal off her chest, taking sips from her tea when appropriate. “I see, to me it sounds like you feel guilty. Though I do not think you are to blame for Rarity falling to the allure of fame. As I recall from what you did tell, she was given a warning most fell. I do not see any fault in you as you had no control over what she would do.” Zecora said as she reached out a comforting hoof to her friend, who gladly accepted the gesture. “Thank you for listening to me and for the tea.” Twilight began, than she noticed the position of the sun through a window. “Oh my it’s getting late I need to get back to the library, would you be able to drop by next week for tea?” She realized adding the invitation almost as an afterthought. “Now that it’s denizens bear me no ill will I would love to visit you in Ponyville.” Zecora said with a grin walking Twilight to the door. Sometime later as Twilight was making her way home through the darkening woods she caught sight of something out of the corner of her eye. It looked out of place so she turned about to get a better view of what it was, than everything went dark. The next morning as Twilight was having tea with fluttershy as her softspoken friend filled her in on the events of last night. Nightmare Moon pondered over the information she had just learned. It really is just as I feared; she does indeed have the ability to dominate the wills of others. I wouldn’t put empathy out of the picture either given how well she seems to be able to read the mental state of others at times. While she has limited control over the full extent of her powers for now with time she will only gain contrail. It seems it was indeed the right idea for me to take the precaution of suppressing my presence within Twilight when Fluttershy is around. Later that day as Twilight was making her way home Nightmare Moon was treated to another surprise her host reached out to her for the first time. You know Doubt I hate to admit it but you were right yesterday I should have taken some precautions before leaving for Zecora’s hut while I still could have run into the cockatrice allthough I might have packed something that could have prevented me from being petrified, like a small mirror. Twilight admitted scuffing a hoof on the ground in deference to her mental companion. No, need for that, I’m just here to help you out after all. We weren’t able to avoid this mistake but I think that because of this we’ll be more willing to cooperate with each other in the future. Nightmare cooed happily to her host. That night Twilight would once more be treated to a restfull sleep filled with pleasant dreams. > Progress > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Six days had passed after Twilight had been freed from her short imprisonment in stone. For the most part she spent her time as she always did studying magic, working at the library, and spending time with her friends. However she had kept her promise to Doubt and had set about learning the magic pocket spell. While she had learned the original spell without much difficulty thanks to some prompting from her mental companion she had set about modifying the spell. The modifications in theory were simple yet in actuality they were quite daunting to undertake. The first change was fairly easy to make it just consisted of increasing the storage capacity of the spell. This change was made for the obvious use of allowing her to carry more items with her should the need arise and it didn’t require much effort to alter the spell formula. The second change on the other hoof was far more drastic. It involved reshaping the better part of the spell to make it work yet it was essential, or so Twilight had been told by her companion. As she prepared to once again try her modified version of the spell Twilight thought back to the conversation that had lead her to begin a new more in depth study of not only the spell she was hoping to alter to suite her needs but also all the others she was currently able to cast. While the astral mane, is an interesting ascetic effect and is somewhat useful in its own right as it seems that it can be prehensile. I think we should work to remove it from the spell for a few reasons. The first being that it’s a marker that said spell is in use while not totally bad it does make us stand out. Next it is incredibly wasteful of magic and while we have larger reserves than most unicorns it would be best not to press our luck should an emergency situation arise. Furthermore Princess Celestia is the only pony aside from Nightmare Moon shown to have such a mane. While we are her student we don’t need to plant any ideas in the public’s mind about our status regarding her do we? Nightmare had reasoned when Twilight had first begun working on mastering the spell. Well no, but it seems like a lot of trouble to go through for just one spell. I mean it’ll take days to break down and reconstruct the spell in order to reshape it to meet our requirements. Twilight had responded still somewhat unsure of her ability to achieve the task that had been set before her. Indeed this will be a test of your abilities, however considering how well versed you are in magical theory and application of said theory for practical use. Besides, if you wish to be known for your ability as a mage simply learning using spells isn’t enough. You need a deep understanding of the mechanics behind a spell and what causes it to work the way it does. The best way to learn this is to take apart a spell down to its most basic components seeing how they inner act with each other and then reassembling them. Look at Star Swirl the Bearded, while it’s true that he created many spells he would never have been able to do so had he never tried to experiment with the spells that were around at the time examining how they worked and in many cases making them either more efficient or less unwieldy. If you wish to create your own spells you need to be less focused with theory and delve more into more practical application of how magic works. Nightmare instructed genteelly encouraging her host. To her delight Twilight had conceded and began to examine the formula within the spell book with a renewed vigor. That had almost a week ago. While she had admittedly been somewhat unwilling to tinker with the mechanics of such a complex spell after some more encouragement from Doubt she began her efforts in earnest and was starting to see some results. While her mane still tended to shimmer brightly in the light whenever she cast the spell she had been able to stop it from flowing with a nonexistent breeze and doubled the storage capacity for the pocket itself. In time she would indeed be able to use the spell with out visual cues present. That however was a long ways off. For now Twilight decided to get some sleep as she had plans tomorrow and it wouldn’t be polite to greet her guest exhausted from the previous day’s events Zecora deserved better than that. So Twilight took a breath then trotted up the stairs to turn in for the night. Waking up the next morning refreshed and ready to face the new day Twilight set about her morning rituals. Once she had showed, brushed her mane and had breakfast her next goal was to get things in order for her meeting with Zecora. While she bustled about the kitchen Spike made his way down stairs eager to enjoy his day off around Ponyville as a large flea market had set up in the town square. “I’ll see you later Twilight I’m heading out now.” He called into the kitchen as he slowly made his way to the front door. “That’s fine Spike have fun I’ll meet up with you in a few hours, I’ll tell Zecora you said hi.” Twilight replied as she set a tea kettle on the stove, going about the step of making tea with the same careful eye that made her a truly effective leader when the situation called for it. A few moments later and the kettle were whistling as the water within reached a boil. With a quick application of her magic the kettle was moved onto its tray and the stove turned off allowing Twilight to levitate it to its proper place on the table. As Twilight readied herself for a visit from her friend, Nightmare Moon was lost in her own thoughts. What a boon that run in with the cockatrice was. She seems far more willing to listen to my advice now. I had estimated that it would take a few more months before she would actively reach out to me like that. She mused to herself. No sooner had the tray set upon the table there was a knock on the front door. “Come on in I’m just setting the table.” Twilight called as she made her way to the front door. A brief flash of magic and the door quietly opened revealing Zecora standing at the threshold wearing her traveling cloak a small basket gripped in her mouth. Nodding her thanks to her unicorn host she made her way inside the library using her tail to close the door behind her. Twilight walking by her side soon the two made their way into the kitchen and seated themselves at the table. Zecora sat her small basket off to the side of the table and opened it revealing several small bags of her home made herbal tea. “A gift for you as a thanks for your hospitality I know how much you enjoy my special brew.” She explained. “Thank you Zecora, I’m sorry to say I didn’t know about this tradition, I’ll try harder to respect your beliefs in the future.” Twilight bashfully replied lowering her head in shame. “It was but a simple mistake, because of this it I will not allow our friendship to break. Now please let us enjoy each other’s company, if I’m not mistaken I believe I smell raspberry.” She replied waving the incident off with a hoof. Twilight grinned as she poured the aforementioned tea into their cups. “Yes, it is with a hint of vanilla one of my teachers at the school for gifted unicorns introduced me to it. I quickly became quite fond of it and would drink it once the ends of year exams were over to help me unwind.” She beamed before taking a sip of her beverage sighing as the beverage worked its effect on her once more. Zecora mimicked her host’s action sampling the drink before her. “I do agree it does seem to have a relaxing effect upon me. Now please Twilight speak your mind it seems that there are answers you wish for me to divine.” She said glancing over the rim of her teacup. Twilight sighed somewhat guiltily, “I never did have a good poker face. I wanted to ask you a few questions about your past and perhaps a favor though I’m not sure if I should be inquiring about it.” She admitted taking another sip of her tea to keep herself steady. ‘Oh this should prove to be most informative. History books can only impart some much information even to one as studious as my host is. Now hopefully she’ll ask the right questions information is the lifeblood of any ruler. Nightmare beamed. “I do thank you for your consideration, I doubt that you would ask anything that would lead to condemnation. So please feel free to ask seeking understanding is an honorable task.” Zecora said with a smile hoping to encourage her younger friend. Twilight grinned in response her friend’s reassurance easing her mind. “Well I’d like to know how long you’ve been here in Equestria, and why you chose to live in the Everfree Forest too.” She began trailing off to let her friend gather her thoughts. Zecora took another sip of her tea before responding. “I am of a nomadic tribe in the northern half of Zebraria did I thrive. Of the world I did wish to know so I left home five years ago. In my travels I did hear of a mysterious placed called Everfree. So to the East I did trek, to put my curiosity in check. It was a great risk I’ll admit for I did not know of the dangers of the path I did trot, though I would not trade my new home for all the gold in Canterlot.” As she finished speaking a grin brightening up her face gently encouraging her friend to continue her questioning. “Oh, interesting I thought the last of the nomadic tribes had settled down about five generations ago.” She beamed her drive for answers, and the desire to know more about her friend pushing her on. “ I’ve heard some rumors about tensions between the northern and southern settlements rising over the years escalating greatly with war approaching on the horizon is this true?” she hesitantly inquired torn between her desire to learn and the risk of overstepping her bounds warring across her face. Zecora nodded solemnly before speaking. “Indeed it is true; neither side will compromise their point of view. I fear to say that war between my people will be raging one day. It is unlikely that the last wandering tribes will be allowed to avoid this fate, so many like me are leaving the Zebarian state.” She informed finishing her first cup of tea. Twilight silently refilled it mulling over the last question she wanted to ask. In an effort to stall a bit longer she took a deep swig from her own cup and signed realizing that she had done this to herself the question would hound her until she got an answer. “What, about the enslavement of the Earth Ponies who emigrated there so long ago, is it still in ongoing or has it been put to rest?” Twilight regretted asking the moment she opened her muzzle but she had to know. Zecora paused and cast a forlorn glance at her teacup for a long moment. “I will not lie to you; the stories of slavery are indeed true. However there is some hope, as many communities are starting to lay aside the lash and rope.” She replied looking her younger friend straight in the eye. Twilight pondered what she just learned a small smile crossing her muzzle. “I’d always hoped that it was just a rumor, propaganda and lies but knowing that things are starting to turn around even if it is a very slow moving change makes it more palatable to hear.” Twilight began, “ I’m sorry I asked such probing questions but I wanted to know more about you and your homeland.” She finished cheerfully finally emptying her first cup of tea. From there the conversation turned to lighter topics, including Zecora’s early days of living in the Everfree Forest, the local legends and old mare’s tales of her homeland stories of Twilight’s time at Celestia’s School for Gifted unicorns, the trials of dealing with a teething dragon, and what each other’s preferred blend of tea was. As the morning wore on their mood grew lighter and before they knew it the kettle was empty and noon was fast approaching. “Once again I really enjoyed your company would you like to meet at my home next week for tea?”Zecora asked as she rose from her spot at the table. “I’d love to Zecora, however before you go I’d like to ask about that favor I mentioned a while ago.” Twilight said looking a bit sheepish for even bringing it up. “Such a simple task I can do, now please inform me as to why this favor does trouble you.” Zecora nodded her curiosity about the request and why it seemed to unsettle her friend prompting her to act. “Uh, well I was wondering if you would be willing to teach me Alchemy it’s just so very different from unicorn magic. I hesitate to ask because from what I’ve read it’s treated as a sort state secret of Zebraria.” Twilight admitted scoffing the floor with a hoof out of embarrassment. A mirthful chuckle escaped from Zecora. Once she calmed herself she spoke. “Is that all you ask, do not worry this is no forbidden task. I would do in a heartbeat even though teaching is no easy feat. On the condition that you share your own knowledge of magic with me, even if I can only learn the theory.” A weight seemed to lift from Twilight when she heard her friend’s honest reply. “Oh thank you Zecora and it would be my pleasure to try my hoof at teaching, I promise to give it my best effort!” She gushed, ideas for lesson plans already forming in her head. You never stop surprising me Twilight, you ask some truly relevant questions then you top it off with this. Oh you continue to prove how unworthy Celestia is to have you. I can’t wait to see the full effect that my guidance will have upon you. I didn’t have to prompt any of this, I shall enjoy having you rule at my side. In fact I think I’ll ease off the manipulation of your dream for a few days and see how you’re developing. Nightmare decided truly impressed with the information twilight was able to get and the prospect of her host picking up the art of alchemy to boot. “All I ask is that you try, for now we must say good bye. I have much I wish to do, and am willing to bet the same applies to you.” Zecora said as she made her way to the door, Twilight trotting by her side saddle bags in tow. “See you soon I’m going to enjoy the flea market while it’s still up and running.” Twilight agreed holding the door open for her friend. Once they were both outside she shut and locked the door then placed her bags upon her back and accompanied Zecora until their paths split at the town square. With Twilight turning toward the bustling market therein and Zecora headed to her home in the Everfree Forest. Twilight was enjoying the market; each stall promised new where to examine and ponies to meet. While she hadn’t see Spike yet she had run across Applejack tending to the many hungry patrons from her cart. Just as she was about to turn a corner and start down a new row Doubt’s voice caught her attention. Look at that booth being run by that blue unicorn; he has a lance amongst his wares she instructed. Twilight turned her head to the right, low and behold propped up next to some kites and fencing foils there indeed was a wooden lance. Thinking back to her father’s stories of his time in the jousting club at school and the vague memories of seeing her older brother practicing the sport she trotted up to the booth to take a closer look. It was a fairly standard instrument all things considered the only real outstanding characteristic about it was the bright red stain applied to the well cared for piece of sporting equipment. While the rougher variants of the sport like Rennen and Stechen didn’t apple to her the more passive form of ring jousting had seemed like fun to her. You know it wouldn’t take too much effort to set up a tiltyard to train in, besides it would help keep you in shape for next year’s Running of the Leaves. Nightmare encouraged. I think you’re right and even if it’s too expensive there’s no harm in asking. Besides Shinning Knight made it look like so much fun. Twilight agreed. “Excuse me sir,” She began addressing the shop keep who turned to face his newest customer eagerly “How much are you asking for that lance over there?” she finished her question seeming to startle him some. “Oh, not very often I see somepony take an interest in that the joust is something of a dying sport these days. Normally I’d ask for Sixty bits for it but, because you seem like such a nice young mare I think I could part with it for say, Forty bits.” He offered smiling warmly at his potential customer. Thinking for a moment Twilight nodded and levitated the bits out of her saddle bag to the counter, thanking the shop keeper for his time as she did so. Once the transaction was complete she took the lance into her telekinetic grip then quickly teleported it to her room in the library. Once that task was completed she continued to walk the rows of stalls and booths set up hoping to find Spike, or one of her other friends. After another hour of ambling around the market Twilight finally found her number one assistant as he was just finishing up a transaction at a stall that a wide variety of gemstones. “Hey Spike how have you been enjoying the market so far?” She asked him as he approached her. “It’s been great; I got to see all kinds of amazing stuff. There was Pegasus selling bottles of liquid rainbow, and an Earth Pony who had this awesome collection of Daring Doo books. Though by far the best thing I saw was this unicorn that was walking around with hydra fangs strapped to his forelegs!” he babbled walking alongside Twilight who listened to his every word. The last bit really caught her attention though she decided not to ask about him as she didn’t like the idea of Spike being around somepony like that. “Well I’m glad you’re enjoyed yourself here, I think we both earned a little break like today after everything that’s been going on recently.” She said as the two of them continued to take in the sights and sounds of the flea market. It was sundown by the time they had decided to return home for the evening. After a quick supper they both washed up and headed to bed. Twilight was able to rest easily that night much like she had been able to ever since she started working on modifying the magic pocket spell. For the next three days things settled into a comfortable pattern for Twilight and Spike. As they went about their daily tasks in Ponyville, on the evening of the third night Twilight had a breakthrough and was finally able to complete her modifications to the magic pocket spell. While it was still somewhat taxing for her to maintain its use over an extended period of time it would be far less so than the original version of the spell. As Twilight was preparing to go to bed that evening she was being congratulated by Doubt for her accomplishment. This really is a remarkable achievement, few unicorns ever take an interest in spell crafting and modification, and fewer still would choose such a notoriously difficult spell as their first attempt. You really should be proud of yourself Twilight. She praised, However aside from working on the duration of the spell I think you should take a break from this field of magical study for a bit. You don’t want to risk overtaxing yourself do you? Nightmare asked. Well no, but what should I move onto then, I don’t like to admit it but I get far too antsy if I don’t have a project of sorts to work on. Twilight muttered pondering over how high strung she could be at times as she climbed into her bed for the night. There is that little nick knack you picked up at the flea market the other day. I’m sure that you could find a safe place to convert into a tiltyard. The only real problem would be getting a harness for the lance made. Doubt assured her host. I could ask Rarity, if anypony is capable of making something like that around here it’s her. Twilight suggested feeling her eyes start to droop. Indeed why don’t you ask her in the morning then I’m sure that she would enjoy the challenge, it would also be a way to help contribute to her business. Doubt agreed slowly guiding her host to the land of dreams for another night of sound slumber. Bright and early the next mornings Twilight set out to Rarity’s home and place of business the Carousel Boutique. Seeing the open sign on the door she entered the chime of a bell announcing her arrival there. “Just a immune please!” Rarity called from the work room while she waited Twilight took in the main room of the boutique, noting the work in progress dresses on the dress forms arranged in a pattern that seemed to show the progress not just of each outfit but how complete it was when compared to the others. Just as Twilight was starting to wrack her brain trying to guess who ordered each outfit and for what occasion she heard her friend speak up from behind her.”Oh Twilight darling what bring you here this fine morning?” She asked getting Twilight’s attention. “Oh well I picked up a lance at the flea market the other day and I was hoping you would be able to make a harness for me so I could being training with it once I found a suitable location.” Twilight explained somewhat sheepish about having such an item made. “I didn’t know that you enjoyed jousting Twilight I never figured you to enjoy such a physical sport. It seemed like it would be more Rainbow Dash’s or Applejack’s alley than yours.” Rarity began “However well all have our hobbies. As for the harness well I already have your measurements but I’d need to see the lance you’ll be using in order to get it up to snuff as it were, would you mind bringing it up the day after tomorrow? I’m a bit swamped at the moment as you can see.” She finished gesturing to the dress forms that Twilight had been admiring earlier as well as the absolute mess that was her work room at the moment. Twilight nodded, “That won’t be a problem at all Rarity. I admit it was something of an impulse buy but I don’t regret it I’ve toyed with the idea of picking up the sport for years and well I guess I finally convinced myself to take the plunge. Good luck with your orders then and I’ll see you in a few days.” Twilight agreed walking to the door of the boutique. Once outside Twilight began her trek back to the library, while Spike was capable of running the places on his own she would rather not have him shoulder the task by himself if she could help it. Just as she had arrived home and had opened the door, she paused momentarily. A large shadow had passed by just overhead and it didn’t match up with any bird or Pegasus she knew of. Passing it off as a trick of the light she returned to her home for the day and set about the task of running the library with Spike. It was a few hours past moonrise now, Spike had gone to bed some time ago while Twilight was busy checking over the records of recently returned books so she could keep track of late fees should the matter arise. Suddenly there was a knock on the door. Curios about who could be stopping by and why she set the papers down on her work desk and approached the door opening it. To her utter amazement it was Gilda. Regaining her senses she quickly invited the griffon into the building. Hmm this is an interesting turn of events I didn’t expect her to return and neither did my host. Still this could prove to be informative just like tea with Zecora brought a lot of interesting facts to light. Nightmare Moon mused to herself. “Hey I’ve made up my mind about you and I’ve decided that I’m willing to be friends with you. You seem rather cool for a pony. So I was thinking we could talk for a bit get to know each other and all that.” She said. “Sure, since this was my idea it’s only fair if I go first what would you like to know Gilda.” Twilight beamed the prospect of making a new friend invigorating her. “Hmm, well for starters how were you able to walk around Cloudsdale like that, also how did you meet Dash?” She began wasting no time. “Oh that’s easy I found a spell that lets a unicorn or earth Pony walk on clouds for three days and cast it on myself and two of my friends. I would have cast the artificial wings spell on all of use but it was just too draining, and well they aren’t exactly the strongest wings in the first place.” She explained feeling somewhat sheepish for having cast Daedalus woven wings spell in Rarity. “Huh, I didn’t know those kinds of spells even existed. Then again I was never too interested in much outside of flying and my other hobbies. Don’t worry I’ll let you ask about them later first though I’d like to know how you met up with Rainbow Dash she left flight school she didn’t visit me as much so we kind of fell out of contact.” Gilda responded honestly surprised with what she just heard. Twilight blushed a bit with embarrassment but resigned herself to telling the tail of how she met Rainbow Dash and her other friends to Gilda hoping that she didn’t come across as a braggart like Trixie from so long ago. However much to her delight her new friend seemed to be taking to the story with a grain of salt. As she finished the story the griffon seemed to pondering something for a bit before nodding apparently having reached whatever conclusion she had been leading up to. “You don’t look like your lying but I’m going to hold off judgment on the whole beating Nightmare Moon bit for now. As for Dash crashing into you and being goaded into doing a day’s work in seconds? Oh yeah that’s her all over. She never thinks about bleeding off her momentum, she’s way too concerned about pushing her limits to do that.”She responded, then after pausing for a moment she decided to ask another question. “Anyway aside from studying magic what do you like to do?” “Well I really enjoy astronomy, and I’m going to give jousting a try my older brother made it look really fun and dad was always ready to break out stories from his days on the team.” Twilight volunteered. “Okay now that’s cool a sport like that takes a lot of guts to get into and I can’t think of very many noteworthy mares to take it up recently just adds to that rock on Twilight.” Gilda beamed. “Thanks, I don’t intend to get into the full contact stuff right away, after a while maybe but for now I’ll just stick with ring jousting. What about you, you said you had a few hobbies you really enjoyed as well?” Twilight inquired “Yeah I’m a fan or archery, and old Uncle Greg taught me how to wield a spear. Just between you and me though I’m really into sculpting I don’t know why but next to flying nothing helps me unwind after a long day like taking a mound of clay and shaping it into something new.” Gilda reluctantly admitted almost as if she was expecting Twilight to laugh at the mere mention of her artistic inclination. When she didn’t Gilda seemed to relax not quite dropping her guard but still she didn’t seem to be as distant either. “Wait, you said Greg, you didn’t happen to mean Gergor Gustav did you?” Twilight inquired This is interesting how is she connected to an ambassador? Nightmare pondered. “You know Uncle Greg? I wonder how, I’ve never really known him to leave the Avian Alliance embassy outside of a vacation.” Gilda responded to Twilight’s question with one of her own. “I wouldn’t say that I know him so much as I know of him. I bumped into him a few times after finishing up some star gazing. He seemed like a nice enough gargoyle. We never did more than exchange some brief pleasantries before heading on our separate ways though.” Twilight explained before trailing off at the end she wanted to ask how Gilda knew him but decided that it wasn’t her place to ask. “Yeah that’s uncle Greg for yah always got his head in the game but never too busy to stop and say hi guess it comes with his line of work though. Heh, next time I’m up in Canterlot I’ll have to pay him a visit. It’ll be worth the trip alone to see him explain why he never bothered mentioning you.” She replied an impish grin spread across her beak. Twilight returned the grin and was about to ask another question when she noticed the position of the moon finally realizing how late it was. “Uh, Gilda I don’t mean to seem rude but it’s rather late, do you think we can finish this conversation another day?” She hesitantly asked. Gilda’s gaze followed Twilight’s out the window briefly before she returned her focus to the unicorn before her.”No problem Twilight, I’ll drop by in a few weeks keep an eye out for me so until then later.” She agreed, with that she let herself out and flew off into the night. Once Gilda had disappeared from sight Twilight closed the door and headed up to bed the long day catching up to her and causing her to drift off quickly. Nightmare Moon however wasn’t so quick to follow her host’s lead. This is a golden opportunity if I ever saw one. Should Gilda really be connected to the ambassador of the Avian Alliance Twilight could stand to gain much from this friendship. With some careful prodding I might even be able to persuade her to defect once the time comes to expose Celestia for what she really is. Things are truly looking up for me. She purred to herslf before drifting off as well. Author's note Rennet jousting involves knocking away the opponet's shield while Stechen involves knocking a crest off the opponet's helmit. I can't recall the offical name for it but ring jousting involves collecting rings with your lance. That aside I hope you all enjoyed this chapter. > Historic musings > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- It was the next morning and Twilight was up bright and early, after going about her daily routine she fixed herself a quick breakfast and set about her task for the day reorganizing the library. A task that required a keen eye and a lot of patience, however after having living and working among the stacks for several months now she was incredibly familiar with the contents of the library this allowed her some room to think freely as she worked. So Twilight allowed her mind to drift to a topic that until recently hadn’t given a second thought Early Equestrian History. This was one of the more interesting topics to research but also one of the more frustrating as well. This was because after about nine hundred years documentation became not only far more scarce but also far less credible as well. This was the reason that the banishment of Nightmare Moon was considered little more than an old mare’s tale. Bah, how dare they relegate me to such a minor position, an old fable with a holiday based on paranoia attached to it. These ponies don’t deserve my greatness. When the time comes I shall take Twilight and leave this sun obsessed land to found my own nation. Nightmare moon grumbled to herself. That particular aspect of history wasn’t what she was pondering over. No on this day her thoughts were turning to one of the most major yet sadly less documented topics an event known simply as “The Fracturing.” Often left out of all but the more advanced courses on history and even then subject to debate “The Fracturing” was second only to the “Homestead War.” In the amounts of controversy it stirred up amongst scholars. While there was no denying that the event took place the exact timing of the event, the numbers of ponies involved, along with the reason behind it were largely up for debate and interpretation. In short some time during the migration from the old land (Now referred to as the Dead Lands as they were still incased in ice and snow.) to modern day Equestria the three pony tribes had divided into six. The Dead Lands are still frozen? Hmm this just keeps getting more and more interesting. I truly did pick the perfect host, she is irreplaceable. Nightmare purred to herself. The Pegasi led by Corporal Current traveled farther south and while tensions were very high for the first few years. Peace between them, the Griffons, and the Gargoyles was achieved and the Avian Alliance was formed. Meanwhile the Unicorns led by Lord Copper traveled to the east and even tried sailing to another continent, however the ill fated voyage across the sea would have surely ended them had the Minotaur not taken pity upon them and allowed them to settle into their island nation of Minos. As for the Earth Ponies lead by Citrus Twist, they were by far the least fortunate of the lot as their bid for freedom from the rather chaotic rule by Chancellor Pudding Head ended up damning them to a far worse fate. Traveling west past the lands of the Bison and into Zebraria where they were enslaved by the residents of the land, apparently remaining in such subservience up until recently in spite of several uprisings over the centuries. All these thoughts passed through her mind as her body went through the motions or sorting cataloging and shelving books. Twilight never even noticed that she had missed lunch completely as her body worked and her mind drifted over a topic sparked in her mind by conversations with Zecora and Gilda. Even Spike’s absence failed to capture her attention at the moment. Why had the Unicorns and Pegasi split off? Was the real question on the minds of historians. While Princess Platinum and Commander Hurricane had their issues they didn’t seem to suffer from the same kind of madness that Chancellor Pudding Head did. Known for writing and rewriting laws on a whim, issuing edicts like requiring that all her subjects must act like a fish on the night of a full moon, or even twice declaring war on a type of vegetable that was toxic to eat, granted Smart Cookie was often able to mitigate the worst of her eccentricities but even she could only do so much. While the few surviving accounts from their subjects varied there were two confirmed problems for both Platinum and Hurricane. For the latter it was ironically tied in with her strengths. She was a truly capable leader, so long as there was a battle to fight or weather to be tended. However this firm style of leadership didn’t lend itself well to the day to day rigors of managing a nation. Reports of punishing ponies for bringing her news she didn’t like or even treating civilians with the same iron hoof she used to keep troops in line were a common theme. Then there were the accounts that seemed to have been made up by detractors. Such as having pegasi that were too weak to fly, or born with physical defects put to death, or even used in live fire exercises to train the more capable ones for combat, or weather control. She never was one to let resources go to waste, and times were much harder for ponies back then. Nightmare thought to herself. As for Princess Platinum, she simply could not relate to her subjects. The one she got along the best with was Clover the Clever and even Clover’s journal mentions that if it wasn’t for a request by her mentor that she never leave Platinum’s side that she would have defected. Apparently the incident of “watching her stoop” was not uncommon and Clover had actually carried her princes in such a manner fairly often when travel outside of Unicornia was called for. Platinum also had a tendency to see to it that she had the best in absolutely everything and tended to drain the royal treasury fairly often recouping what she spent with short but frequent periods of high taxes. The absolute worst rumors about her though involved her having any mare that she saw as a threat to her beauty eliminated in short order. Another was that she had designs on Clover as any colt or filly that showed interest in her tended to disappear never to return. The latter is true at least, poor Clover never saw it coming either, too enthralled by her studies and her duty to her princess. I can’t recall how far Platinum took her advances though. Nightmare Moon mused mentally sighing with pity. However so few reports of this era of Equestrian History had been preserved and ironically the best known source of information from the time is also one that historians hesitated to trust due to the character of the author. His name was Alabaster Moor a sergeant in the Unicornia and later Equestrian army. The reason for the distrust of his accounts was that he was known for some rather brutal methods of warfare. Tactics like poisoning water supplies, slaughtering entire towns, and even conscripting prisoners to fight against their home nations were among his suggested strategies. He also created four spells three of which are taught to each unicorn member of the royal guard. His final spell simply called “Leech” is forbidden to learn and its use is considered a war crime. As well it should be a spell that draws either magical energy or life itself from the target to its caster. While no doubt a useful ability for war it is by no means a commendable creation. Still tendencies toward dark magic or not they should have listened to him more during the Homestead War. Nightmare Moon snorted in contempt. Whatever his flaws he was one of the few ponies of the era to not only document his life in those pivotal times but also one of the few who took measures to see to it that what he wrote survived to be passed down through history. There was the dilemma, was the information provided to be ignored simply because of the character that provided it? Was it wise just to assume that he was telling the truth or was he perhaps just a mad colt who had some lucid moments? Perhaps things truly were so very different back then that what now seemed like underhooved tactics were common place. These thoughts and more whirled through Twilight’s mind as she neared completion of her task for the day. “Twilight, what whoa” Spike trailed off as he descended the stairs taking a look at the freshly cleaned and organized library. Every shelf was dusted and every book was in its proper place, the floor had been cleaned and even the cobwebs had been cleared out. Spike recovered from his momentary shock to ask his surrogate sister some questions. “How long have you been up, did you even eat anything this morning?” Spikes voice final drew Twilight away from her thoughts and brought her back to the here and now.”Oh Spike, I didn’t hear you come down. I guess I was off in my own little world while I was cleaning this morning.” She explained turning to face the young dragon. “I’ve been up since sunrise and yes I had breakfast I don’t know what you’re so worried about it’s only, Two O’ Clock?” She continued becoming surprised by how quickly she let time slip away from her as she worked. Before she could say anymore her stomach decided to voice its complaints with her neglecting lunch and growled loudly. Twilight just smiled sheepishly at Spike while he gave her an annoyed look. “Well come on then let’s get you something to eat before you collapse where you stand…again.” he teased as he lead her into the kitchen. Once inside he began to sort through the pantry and refrigerator for ingredients. “Hey! That hasn’t happened in years, besides I didn’t hear you complaining about all the extra sleep you got this morning.” Twilight complained as she took her seat at the table and watched her little brother get to work. “Okay, I’ll admit you got me there but still I can’t allow you to neglect yourself like that what kind of an assistant would that make me.” Spike replied as he set to work on making a vegetable stir fry for the two of them. Twilight walked up to Spike and gave him a playful noogie.”I don’t say this enough but you’re more than just my number one assistant, you’re like a brother to me Spike. Between you and Shining Armor I think I got the best ones in all Equestria to boot.” She said grinning proudly as Spike accepted her praise. “Aw thanks Twilight, now just sit back and let me take care of lunch, after that we can get to whatever else you had planned for today.” Spike replied beaming at how highly Twilight thought of him. Soon enough his focus was entirely back on the task at hand as he continued to work on their late lunch. Within another ten minutes the stir-fry was ready to be served up and soon they shared a nice quite lunch together. Once lunch had been eaten and the dished washed Twilight and Spike soon found themselves on the way to see the Mayor. Deciding to take advantage of her free afternoon Twilight intended to make the most of this opportunity and see if she couldn’t arrange for a location to begin practicing her new hobby once all other preparations had been dealt with. It was a relatively short trip from her home in the library to the town hall at the other end of the town square. From there the two entered the building and after asking The Mayor’s assistant if she had some free time that afternoon was informed that she was finishing up a meeting and would be with them shortly. So Twilight and Spike quietly claimed their positions on a small bench near the wall and proceed to wait for The Mayor to finish the business she was currently attending to. An hour had past, Spike had nodded off leaning against Twilight who had spent her time reading through the old magazines that had been provided for visitors just as she was about to reach for a third however a voice caught her attention. “…Thank you again for your time Mayor the hospital appreciates your meeting with us about this on such short notice.” Nurse Tender Heart said as she trotted out of the door the Mayor right behind her. “It’s no trouble at all, after all we have to keep the hospital running smoothly and because you brought this issue up so soon I’ll be able to inner grate it into our budget for next year without any real problems. Have a good day Nurse Tender Heart.” The Mayor replied she was just about to return to her office when she caught site of Twilight and Spike out of the corner of her eye.”Oh twilight Sparkle Spike this is a surprise how can I help you this afternoon?” she asked smiling at them from her position in the doorway. “Hello Mayor. I just had a quick question I wanted to ask and then I’ll be on my way.” Twilight began as she slowly got up from her spot on the bench, at The Mayor’s nod she followed her into her office, after taking in the tasteful decoration including a rather sturdy looking bookcase and a small section of the wall behind the desk devoted to degrees and certifications of merit twilight took her seat on a plush cushion across from the Mayor. “Well Twilight how can I help you today?” the Mayor ask from her position behind her desk quill, ink, and paper at the ready and within easy reach from their positions upon the well organized desk. “I’d like to inquire about any empty lots that are available for public use. You see I purchased a lance at the flea market recently and I was hoping to find a place to practice relatively close to town as I would like to avoid setting up near the Everfree Forest.” Twilight explained. Good my little host, pour some effort into this sport and I’ll mold you into a capable pikemare able to stand on her own against both beast and pony alike. Nightmare Moon purred to herself. The Mayor paused for a while then seemed to come to a conclusion she then began to sort through some of the papers on her desk. A few minutes later she reemerged from her search holding out a sheet of paper to Twilight with a smile, Twilight took the paper from the Mayor’s mouth with her magic and began to look it over as the mayor responded.”That’s the address of a lot behind the quill and sofa store that’s been left vacant for years. The owner Davenport is willing to rent it out to anypony willing to clean it up and pay a few bits a month.” Twilight’s eyes light up at The Mayor’s words as well as the information written on the paper she held in her magical grasp. “Thank you Mayor this is just what I was looking for! I’ll be sure to get in touch with davenport soon.” She beamed folding the paper up and slipping it into her saddlebags. Moments later she had bid The Mayor goodbye with a friendly hoofshake and left the office to collect Spike from the waiting room and then make her way to the store in question. Within fifteen minutes she had left the town hall and been to speak with Davenport who was thrilled that his offer was being taken up by somepony after so very long. However Twilight’s long day was finally making itself known so soon enough Twilight and Spike returned home where said unicorn turned in early for once at sunset. The next two days passed without incident, Twilight went about her daily tasks deviating only slightly to stop by the Carrousel Boutique to show rarity her lance and have quick measuring done just for accuracy's sake. Meanwhile Rarity was working on some project that she was keeping secret deciding not to unveil it until it was completed. However the following Saturday was far from low key as it found Twilight, Rainbow Dash, Pinkie Pie, Fluttershy, Applejack, and Spike racing out of town to the woods to save Rarity from her apparent canine captors. A short distance from the scene of the crime the party of six stopped so Spike could fill them all in now that he had finally calmed down enough to speak in full sentences. Once Spike was ready he spoke up. “Rarity and I were out hunting for gems when along came these creatures that called themselves Diamond Dogs they kidnapped Rarity dragging her underground so that she could find more gems for them.” Spike explained as he paced back and forth trying to keep himself calm enough to actually provide some useful information to his friends. “Well what are we waiting for? Let’s get down there kick their flanks and get Rarity back!” Rainbow Dash exclaimed lifting off the ground and making punching motions with her forhooves. “We do need to save Rarity but we can’t be too hasty to act. We don’t know how deep underground they are, how extensive their cave network is, nor how many opponents we’re up against here. We need to be cleaver about this going in halfcocked is only going to end in trouble.” Twilight responded calmly [Color cornflower blue]That’s how we handle things with a clear leave head, now let’s get this obedience class started. Nightmare Moon praised as Twilight lead the group into a field covered with holes. When the purple unicorn tied to look down one she found it being filled with a truly impressive speed. Soon the other holes were closed in spite of the best effort of the group of friends however Twilight refused to let this setback get to her either. With a thought her horn soon began to glow levitating all the large mounds of dirt into the air and shunting it to the side quickly reopening all of the holes that had been blocked seconds before. Without missing a beat the group dove into the closest opening and began their decent into the underground catacombs of the Diamond Dogs. With but a few moments of sliding they landed relatively softly on the floor of the cave however the sheer expansiveness of the tunnel network game them pause. “Shoot now what, it’ll take all day to search all these tunnels, well best get to it then.” Applejack notes before walking toward the nearest opening in the wall. Before she can enter however five large dogs in armor drop down from nowhere and land atop the ponies back slipping hastily made rope bridles over their muzzles. “Ha more work horses!” one of the dogs exclaims as he pulls upon the rope he’s holding jerking Fluttershy’s head back slightly. “Oh we’ll just see about that! Come on girls they want a ride let’s give them a ride!” Rainbow Dash yells racing forward as fast as she can before coming to a sudden stop bucking with all her might sending her rider shooting ahead to crash into a stalagmite! Hmm not a bad off the cuff plan I’m impressed Nightmare mused to herself as the rest of the ponies followed rainbow Dashes lead and began to buck in an effort to dismount the dogs on their backs. Applejack was the next one to do so her years of bucking trees on the farm and at the rodeo have made her into a formidable athlete. With a vicious buck she sent the dog on her back rocketing up into the ceiling before he could impact however he was quickly caught in a lasso and slammed to the ground and tied up. Pinkie Pie was the next to dislodge her passenger. Her normal hopping gate transformed into a series of mighty leaps that unseated the dog on her back and set him tumbling to the ground below. Before the Dig Dog could get up though he soon found himself buried under one of his pack mates as Fluttershy was able to cast her timid nature aside and buck the dog off her back. Twilight however was having a bit of trouble with her attacker for the simple reason that Spike had already been riding on her back before the group had been ambushed thus she had to deal with not only more weight than the others but also the safety of someone else. After a few moments of dashing and bucking she was still unable to remove her passenger. [Color conrflower blue]You’re thinking two dimensionally Twilight after all there’s more than one way to enchant an apple. I know you can figure this out. Nightmare advised her host hoping to spur her onward to victory. She still needs the proper training to become the grand unicorn that is destined to be sitting at my side. Nightmare mused to herself wondering how to prompt Twilight to think more like a solder and less like a scholar. Nightmare’s advice was just the hint that Twilight needed however as she soon began to levitate herself and her passengers into the air with a quick rotation she soon had the Dig dog’s back facing the ground below she released her grip on the dog and let him fall while she safely teleported herself and a very disoriented Spike to the ground by Applejack’s side. Shortly after Twilight and Spike touched the ground the Dig dogs that were able fled the area disappearing down the winding passageways of the elaborate network of caves and tunnels. One however was unable to flee not because he was out cold rather because he was bound up thanks to Applejack’s quick thinking after she had removed him from her back. With a slight grin Applejack explained her idea to her friends. “Ah figured that since our friend here was so eager to meet us than he wouldn’t mind being a neighbor and leading us to Rarity.” That was a clever idea Twilight’s friends might just prove to be worthy assets to me now how to go about swaying them to my side once twilight has come to realize her place. Nightmare moon pondered. “Bah, what makes you think I’ll do as you say mule?” the Dig Dog retorted growling at his captores. “Who are you calling a ‘Mule’ Mutt?” Rainbow Dash barked getting up in the captured Dig Dog’s face. She had to quickly pull back as the Dig Dog growled loudly before snapping at her muzzle. Before things could escalate any further Twilight pulled Rainbow away from him and Fluttershy quickly stepped up into her place brows furrowed in anger Her eyes quickly locking with his as she spoke, “That is no way to behave, you attacked us while we were trying to rescue a friend that your own kind abducted! After we defended ourselves you have the nerve to belittle and insult us? How dare you now your are GOING to lead us to where our friend Rarity is and you’re going to do so without complaint do you understand me?” Fluttershy demanded using only a fraction of the power of her stare to make her wishes known to the dog before her. The Dig Dog humbled by this raw power used upon him and the abrupt shift in personality from the pony who used it could do little more than mummer a “Yes ma’m” and nod as Applejack untied the rope from around him and allowed him to his feet. His shoulders slumped and his head hanging low the dig dog began to lead the group to the desired location. It truly is amazing how powerful that gift of hers is even when only a fraction of it is used. Nightmare Moon thought to herself. Within a matter of moments they had arrived at the inner chamber where sounds of screaming and sobbing could be heard. Before anyone in the group could react the barred boor burst open and three Diamond Dogs emerged crying out for help and begging to be saved from what they were referring to as the beautiful banshee. Upon spotting the ponies they threw themselves at their mercy claiming they would give anything to be rid of her. It was at that moment that Rarity entered the chamber harnessed to a large cart that seemed to be in danger of overflowing with gemstones. Once she was in sight Twilight and the others crowded around her exclaiming how relieved they were that she was okay. After a brief group hug Rarity spoke up. “Of course I’m fine was there ever any doubt? Just because I’m a lady doesn’t mean I can’t take care of myself. Now come you’re just in time to help me return with my ‘spoils of war’ as it were.” With that she motioned to five other carts filled just as full as the one she was strapped to. How very clever, she turned her situation around by sheer force of personality. I really must find a way to persuade the others to join my cause, Twilight is irreplaceable but she would be much more willing to comply if her friends were with her. Nightmare said to herself. Within a few minutes Twilight and the rest of the ponies were strapped to carts of their own while Spike lounged in Rarity’s cart. Soon they were being led through the extensive network of caves once more However as they were heading up the incline something gleaming in the torchlight caught twilight’s attention so she stopped to take a closer look at what it was. It was a room of worship of some kind there was an alter along the wall across from the door and positioned between the wall and alter were three statues carved of marble and painted with exquisite detail. One was of an orange Fox poised to fire and arrow he wore a black mask that covered the top of his head save his eyes and ear along with a black vest. Next to him stood a Diamond Dog holding a mace aloft in one claw and a shield in another a gold breastplate and helm contrasted nicely with his black fur as did his crimson cape. The third figure, and the one Twilight recognized was a Wolf, he had white coat, that was for the most part hidden by the emerald green and gold robe that covered most of his figure one hand was free while the other held the shaft of an odd staff that was just as tall as he was. The end of the staff that touched the ground was a large spade shovel head, while the top of the staff was adorned by a large sphere with a small spike protruding from the top. Quickly shaking of her amazement Twilight left the room and caught up with the others eager to share with them what she had just seen. Interesting, it seems that while the ponies forgot the Homestead War the memory lingers with the remnants of the old Canid republic. Those were tributes to the three greatest heroes of that side of the war Hunter the steadfast, Caesar the noble, and Hex the healer. It really was a shame what happened to Hex I really do pity him it was bad enough he had immortality forced upon him but to be encased in the metal once used by his fallen commands a cruel fate indeed. Nightmare reflected as Twilight and the others finally reached the surface and began their trek back to Ponyville. Once their escort of Dig Dogs had retreated back to their underground home Twilight decided it was time to make her discovery known. “Did any of you happen to notice those statues in that room off to the side on our way up?” She eagerly asked. “I did darling, and while I admit the craftponyship that went into them was quite astonishing I don’t see why they’re worth bringing up after all I’d rather not be reminded of my time spent with those uncouth canines if I can avoid it.” Rarity answered while the rest of the group shook their heads no. “They represent a link to a part of history that is pretty much forgotten the Homestead War.” Twilight began and upon seeing the confused looks of her friends began to elaborate. “The homestead War was a roughly two year long engagement that began a little over three months after Hearth’s Warming Eve. Not long after the pony tribes had come together to form Equestria the inhabitants of the land made their presence known. Modern day Equestria was at one point known as the Canid Republic that was composed of the four canine tribes, Dig Dogs, Diamond Dogs, Foxes, and Wolves. For the most part the canine’s tribes were winning even though the ponies fought back valiantly. As the second year of the war began the pony tribes had been pushed back north into the dead lands. Then just when all hope seemed lost a horrific explosion rocked the battlefield while it took out a great number of ponies it devastated the canine ranks. The military broken and their leader dead the Canid Republic fled reduced to little more than packs of roving bandits.” Twilight explained taking in all of the aw stricken looks on her friends faces as the town drew ever nearer. “Wait, how come Ah don’t recall reading about this in school? Granted Ah’m not as dedicated in mah studies as you are Twi but Ah doubt that something like that would slip mah mind.” Applejack asked. “Indeed I have no recollection of learning about this war either." Rarity agreed “That’s because we don’t have much information about the war. We know it took place and we have a rough idea on how it ended but few accounts documenting it survived to this day.” Twilight began and seeing that Rainbow Dash was going to speak raised a hoof to silence her before continuing. “To answer your question Rainbow the figures of the statues are of figures related to the war, Prime Minister Caesar, and his Two Bodyguards Hex and Hunter. I only recognized Hex at first Glance as one of our surviving accounts describes him in vivid detail as the author of the account was dead set on taking Hex out. This was because Hex was an incredibly gifted wolf, he was a healer who was rumored could even bring the recently dead back to life. However Sergeant Moor’s commanders thought that attacking a healer was bad form and refused all of his requests.” Twilight finished allowing her friends some time to absorb the information provided to them. “W-Why would he want to kill a healer? I mean surely he was too busy healing to fight, right?” Fluttershy hesitantly asked “Well it was partly because Moor was known for suggesting those kind of tactics, though if his account of things is correct the higher ups refusal to kill Hex was making an already difficult war that much worse as the Canids suffered far fewer casualties because of his abilities with healing magic.” Twilight answered the entrance to Ponyville was now in sight. “Okay so not taking him out was a bad idea, but we ended up winning anyway so what’s the big deal?” Rainbow Dash asked waving aside the issue. “Well to be honest we don’t know HOW we won some theories say it was a powerful spell cast by a group of unicorns, others say that it was a failed attempt at a magical super weapon by the Canids other still think it might have been the work of some kind of sprit of destruction that was passing by really we just don’t know enough about things to even make a guess at what happened and that’s why this isn’t taught in Normal History classes.” Twilight replied shrugging her shoulders. “That’s kind of disturbing knowing that we only won because of some sort of fluke.” Rainbow muttered as they entered the town and made their way to Rarity’s show to drop off the carts and then head to their homes for the night. Oh I don’t know one of those guesses is frighteningly close considering who was involved with that mess. Nightmare thought to herself and shuddered at the memory of the being in question. Soon Twilight had tucked Spike in for the night as was crawling into her own bed for the night where sweet dreams waited for her. Athor's Note, sorry I fail at being timely, well atleast i got this out before I had to leave for the UK tuesday so woo and all that. I hope you enjoy this chapter and I'll be back May eight. > The Arts > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Auther's Note, i really have nothing to say I drug my hide getting this updated and that's all there is to it. Any how special thanks go to Xaladin for his help with part of Zecora's dailog. she's my thrid favoret charater on the show but damn is she a pain in the plot to write for at times. Five days had passed since the eventful meeting with the diamond dogs. Aside from giving Twilight even more to ponder about on the early history of Equestria nothing eventful had happened. So she went about her daily tasks. However she had something to look forward to, her first alchemy lesson with Zecora was tomorrow so rather than stay up late stargazing and working on some privet studies that were picked up more for her own amusement than anything else Twilight turned in early for once. While Twilight slept after a lazy day of caring for the library and gearing up for her first lesson in alchemy the next day Nightmare Moon was pondering over a slight dilemma that she had recently come across. I’m not gathering power fast enough. I should be able to tap into the dreams of several dozen ponies at once by now! Yet I can only safely draw from about five or so. This snail’s pace simply won’t do. I need to get a body of my own, that way I wouldn’t have to waste time and energy filtering the power through Twilight’s dreams without risking her noticing what I’m doing. Or any side affects to her either she's far too valuable to lose. She huffed to herself as she stood on the ever shifting ground of the dreamscape. There are two options I can take and both of them require Twilight not only know of my presence but actively wishing to aid me. The first is to simply stop being subtle and just pull the energy directly through Twilight’s dreams and absorb it that way. While it would be quick I don’t know how having that much raw dream magic flooding through her system would affect her. It could be quite damaging and that is not acceptable she is far too voluble to me. She thought sighing in agitation. So it looks like option number two it is then. I need to get a body of my own so I can be free to absorb the magic of the dreamscape with ease. However I lack the power to manifest a form of my own and will for years yet to come at this current rate. So, I need to get Twilight to construct a new body for me so I can possess it and claim it for my own. That will prove problematic as when I leave her body I’ll be not only exposing her to vast amounts of dream magic, but also draining her of a good deal of her own power. Regrettibly it is my only option though so it will have to do the question though is when and how do I reveal myself to her and gain her trust so she’ll go along with this venture? Nightmare asked herself deciding to put the matter aside for the moment so she could rest Nightmare left the dreamscape and returned to Twilight’s mind soon drifting off into slumber. The next morning Twilight awoke bright and early brimming with excitement about the new field of study that she would be taking her first steps into today. It was true that ponies had devised a few magic potions of their own like the famous love potion that was a part of the origin of hearts and Hooves day. Alchemy extended beyond that. Powders of incredible potency elixirs that were said to be able to do everything from re growing teeth to having eliminated the dreaded black plague, and even the crown jewel of the art the creation of golems! Granted only the best of the art were said to be capable of creating such incredible living constructs but the idea was so enticing to think about the only other type of magic know to have mimicked the feat was the rune magic devised by the griffons and gargoyles. Golems, Could that be it? Well they are something of an empty vessel… Hmm, that’s a possibility; I’ll have to ponder this idea to see if I couldn’t make it work for my needs. Nightmare Moon mused to herself Finally managing to get her giddy excitement under control Twilight set about her morning routine, shower, brushing her mane, and a good breakfast. Just as she was finishing up her meal Spike made his way into the kitchen. “Morning Twilight, I see you’re excited about today.” He greeted as he made his way to the stove to set about making his own breakfast. “Oh, I didn’t wake you did I?” Twilight asked feeling a bit foolish about getting so over excited. “Don’t worry about it I was already half awake when you woke up.” He reassured waving the matter off. “Okay then so are you sure you don’t mind looking after the library by yourself today?” Twilight continued “Hey you’re giving me tomorrow off so I’d say it’s an even trade.” Spike said smiling at the prospect as he began to whisk up his scrambled eggs, lightly seasoning them with powdered quartz. “I guess that’s true then. Well now that we’ve got that all settled I'll just let you enjoy your breakfast before I head out for the day.” Twilight agreed smiling at the dragon she considered her little brother. “Fine by me, hey Twilight I was wondering what finally made you decide to try jousting? I know it’s a bit odd to ask but the thought came to mind the other day and I figured now was a good time to ask.” Spike wonder as he finished mixing up his eggs and began scraping them onto his plate. Well, this could be problematic. Nightmare Moon thought to herself. “Oh I guess it was a number of things, the lance being reasonably priced, Dad’s stories, watching Shining practice, and well to be honest I’d like to be in better shape for the next running of the leaves and winter wrap up.” Twilight replied without much thought. “Huh, I guess I didn’t about it like that I just thought it was kind of weird for you to impulse buy it like that. Still I can’t wait to see you start training I’ll bet you’ll have it down in no time.” Spike said as he sat down at the table with his breakfast and began to eat happily. Hmm, don’t know if it was because he just trusts her or because he wasn’t too bothered by the issue either way that was lucky. If he’d been persistent he could have backed her into a bit of a corner there. Nightmare mused to herself slightly relieved. “No big deal Spike, I’ll admit I was kind of surprised I bought it myself but I think it was a good idea and I intend to follow through on it.” Twilight began as she left her seat at the table and proceeded to grab a basket full of tea bags and a set of empty saddle bags. She adjusted the latter in place on her back and paused before picking up the former with her mouth. “I’m heading out to Zecora’s now Spike have a good day.” She added, once that was said she grabbed the basket in her mouth and proceeded towards the door. “See you later twilight have a great day!” Spike called as she opened the door and trotted out. The walk through town to the Everfree Forest was relatively uneventful. The only real highlight to it was Twilight spotting Fluttershy making her way to the market. The two friends waved to each other and were on their way without a word as both had business to attend to. The Everfree Forest as always held something of a foreboding atmosphere to it. Even in the daylight the shadows seemed to play off each other in unusable ways, the swamp like flora was not only overgrown but seemed to twist and stretch out in unnatural ways, The ambient sounds were somewhat intimidating as you never knew what was being concealed in the underbrush and whether or not whatever it was watching you. Still Twilight was fortunate enough to make it through the forest unmolested and soon enough Zecora’s hut came into view visibly relaxing Twilight even further. The small bastion of civilization seemed to have a comforting presence about it. When she approached the door Twilight knocked to announcer her presence. After a slight delay her zebra friend opened the door and bid her enter. “Good morning to you Twilight, as always seeing you is a delight.” She greeted as The aforementioned unicorn entered and set the basket of tea bags down on what little free space she could find on the counter. The counter tops and shelves were full of jars and bottles made of clay or hollowed out gourds, small pouches sat on shelves next to small phials, wooden mixing spoons, tongs and knives of what appeared to be silver, and a large mortar and pestle occupied the majority of the available space. As always in the center of the room sat the large pewter cauldron ready to be put to use to create whatever brew the zebra wished to make be it magic or mundane. “Wow, I wasn’t aware that alchemy requited such specialized tools of the trade.” Twilight said as she took in all the aforementioned items and the numerous herbs and other ingredients held within the gourds, phials, and clay containers. “Alchemy is a very exact art, in which every factor plays its part.” Zecora began. First she indicated the mortar and pestle made of white stone. “For mortar and pestle, clay can suffice, but I recommend that you take my advice, for only in jade are true ingredients made.” Then she indicated the phials and pouches next. “Any powders that you store should be kept in pouches made of dried mantacore hide. Should the dead you wish not to defile I recommend using a crystal phial.” From there she continued on to indicate the mixing spoons “For any wooden instruments some wisdom I shall impart to you, only those made of the finest yew will do.” Next she pointed out the knife and tongs.”There are only two metals with witch alchemy will work pewter for whatever you wish to brew and silver for all other tools shall do.” From there she indicated the various containers made from hollowed out gourds and the clay vessels “For your ingredients and completed potions to be stored I recommend that you use only clay or a fine gourd. Any other type of container I would avoid lest the magical properties be destroyed.” “Now we come to the two most important things I shall say. Learn well to keep track of the time for day for even the light in the sky will have a role to play. Some potions and powders can only be brewed in the light of day; others requite the gentle touch of moonlight.” Zecore informed before taking a deep breath. “This above all else you must learn if skill in alchemy you wish to earn. All work must be done the Earthpony way. I do not lie; mixing magics is never wise for the results are always a surprise. From the stories I have heard breaking this rule could cause you to shrivel up and die.” She finished in a dead serious tone. Indeed barring bardic magic the differing types of magic never play nice with each other, though hopefully when the time comes I can separate from Twilight without affecting her too much. Nightmare Moon agreed. Twilight winced at the warning that she was given by Zecora and nodded her head in understanding. The process of learning this new type of magic just became far more difficult as she tended to rely on her magic for quite a few mundane tasks. However the added difficulty this added only encouraged her to continue along all the more. After all the effort put into a task made it all the more rewarding when it was properly accomplished as her own studies had taught her over the years. “I see, thank you Zecora I’ll be sure to take what you have said to heart. Now is that all for our first lesson or did you having something more in mind?” She asked ever eager to learn more as always. Zecora smiled brightly at her student in return and chuckled a bit. “I can see that teaching you will be quite a delight. It makes me proud to say that I did indeed have more in store for us today Twilight. The rest of today we shall spend making the containers upon which your work in this art depend. “She explained as she trotted over to a cupboard and opened it up revealing its contents a large number of gourds that needed to be hollowed out. Twilight moved over to the cupboard and took one of the gourds in her mouth and brought it over to the clear worktable and set it down. Once that was done she braced it firmly in place with her left for hoof and took up a silver knife in the right. She then began to work on hollowing it out. The first step was a relatively simple one. Namely cutting a circular opening in the top and removing the now free lid of the container. The next and by far the most time consuming step was to remove the innards from the gourd. Once hollowed out and empted the next step was to rinse out the vessel and dry it. When it was finally dry A potion premade by Zecora was delicately spread along both the inside and outside of the gourd. This simple brew was used to preserve the gourd to both prevent it from rotting over time and to make it more resilient incase it was ever dropped or the like. For the next three hours Twilight went to work on making the first set of her tools. It was a learning experience for her. Not only was she making the tools that this school of magic required she was also learning to both be less reliant on her magic and to better appreciate how much effort it took to perform even the simplest seeming of task with nothing but hooves and mouth to work with. When the three hours had passed twilight now had a set of eighteen such containers. Witch she was now loading up into her saddle bags. Next time she would work on making some clay containers while Zecora lectured her about the basic ingredients she would use; how to identify them, where to obtain them, the properties they contained and so on. She would also be taught how to make the potion that she had used today so that she could make it for herself should the need arise. Once Twilight had finished loading up her saddle bags she turned to Zecora and smiled gratefully. “This was an interesting lesson Zecora; I can’t wait for next time. Also thank you again for teaching me this. I’ll be sure to have those books on basic magical theory and proper conducting of magical energy to you by tomorrow.” She said as she adjusted her saddlebags on her back. “It was no trouble at all; I must admit that today’s lesson was a ball. Though there is enough to learn to fill each day, I think for now I’ll stay with one lesson each week. I think it wise to temper the pace for this knowledge you seek.” Zecora replied as she waved her friend off. It was near sunset when Twilight returned to her home. Most of the citizens of Ponyville had already turned in for the night. Though in some houses there was still the presence of candle light. Just as she was about to open her front door Twilight noticed a note stuck to the door. It read “meet me on the balcony in five minutes I’ve got something I want you to see, signed G” Well it seems our griffon friend is back in town. I can only wonder what’s on her mind. Doubt said to Twilight. The spirit was pleasantly surprised by this turn of events. I guess we’ll just have to find out. I didn’t figure that’s she’d be free to drop by again so soon but still I’m not complaining. Twilight replied as she entered her home. Once inside and the door was shut she headed down to the basement to drop off her saddlebags. Once they were resting securely on a tabletop she quickly trotted upstairs and made her way to the balcony. Once outside she sat and waited. No more than two minutes had passed before Gilda landed before her grinning widely. “Hey Long time so see.” She greeted. “Gilda it’s good to see you again how have you been, had any good odd jobs lately?” Twilight replied. “Oh I’ve been fine, I’ve kept busy too, a few deliveries here some weather work there, I even sold a few sculptures just yesterday.” She began.”Though what really blew me away was when I went to go see my uncle. I asked him a few questions about you. I have to admit I’m impressed he confirmed not just your status as Celestia’s student but your tale about defeating Nightmare Moon, with the most convincing evidence one could hope for an account of everything that transpired that night, from Princess Luna herself. I’ve got to say I’m impressed Twilight. You’ve got some real friends in high places yet you seem pretty level headed.” Gilda finished still grinning. “I-I well, the thing is. I-I’d rather not get involved in politics and it just wouldn’t be right to throw my weight around like that for petty reasons.” Twilight stammered scuffing her forhoof on the wooden balcony in slight embarrassment. Hmm a reasonable stance to take but considering the plans I have fore her I’ll have to subtly encourage her to be a bit more willing to use her authority. Nightmare Moon noted. “Heh, modist I see well I guess I’ll have to take that into mind the next time I use you for inspiration.” Gilda said. “Wait, are you saying what I think you are?” Twilight asked slightly confused. “If you’re guessing that I made a sculpture biased on you then the answer is yes.” Gilda began as she fished a box out of its hiding place a bag on her side that her wings concealed. Once she passed the box over to Twilight she continued. “As soon as I found out that your story about beating Nightmare Moon was true I got inspired and just had to make something. I took a few artistic liberties but well I think it’s quite fitting.” She explained. Her curiosity peaked by her new friends explanation Twilight opened the box and carefully fished out a small figurine wrapped in paper. With but a thought the paper was removed revealing the fruits of Gilda’s labors. It was a depiction of Twilight which was easy to tell by the coloration of coat and mane, along with the detailed reproduction of her cutie mark. Though as stunning as that was there was more to it than that. The miniature depiction of Twilight was standing tall and proud on her hind legs. She was adorned with a billowing black cloak that was caught in some unknown breeze. The hood of the cloak was tossed back to show twilight gazing in determination at some unseen adversary. Around her neck was a necklace that bore the five commonly known elements of harmony. While in twilight’s for legs was a staff held aloft ready to cast a spell of some sort the jewel at the head of the staff being the six pointed star that represented the element of magic. The figure was done with stunning detail Twilight looked like a powerful sorceress ready and able to take on any comers. Twilight had been stunned by the gift. She stared at it for several minutes wide eyed and open mouthed before finally coming back to her senses. With a soft click of her teeth she finally closed her mouth so she could speak. “I, Gilda this is incredible! I really don’t know what to say. I really don’t ‘thank you’ doesn’t seem like nearly enough for all the effort this must have taken to make.” Twilight replied before carefully setting the gift aside and wrapping the griffon in a quick hug. “You really didn’t have to do this you know.” She finished. The craftwork here is truly well done. It is rare to see such detail in work. I can tell that she takes pride in her craft by how much effort went into this. Twilight looks most formidable here. I wonder if it wouldn’t be possible for her to replicate the look should she ever have to take up the elements by herself. Nightmare mused. “You’re welcome and I know. Like I said after I found out that your story was true I got inspired so during my free time I made three of these guys, one for me, one for you, and another to sell if I can find a good buyer.” Gilda replied with a grin. “I’m glad you like it though, it shows that you seem to understand the time and effort that went into making it. Some time I’ll have to show you my studio, I’m sure you’ll get a kick out of some of my other stuff.” She added. waving the matter off like it was nothing. “Sounds like a plan Gilda, so do you live in Cloudsdale, or with your uncle?” Twilight wondered. “Nope, I own my own little cloud house, not as grand as Dash's but it works and it’s easier to move about when I need to. Given that I tend to do odd jobs all over the place so a small house that’s more mobile fits me well.” Gilda replied. “I see, would you like to come in for a chat then? I could heat up some tea and make some biscuits.” Twilight offered. Gilda shook her head with a slightly sad smile. “Some other time, I’ve got a job over in Baltimare that starts the day after tomorrow and it’s a bit of a flight from here especially when you’re pushing a house. I just wanted to pop in for a quick visit and drop that of is all.” She explained. Twilight nodded her understanding. “Well then I won’t keep you any longer Gilda, thank you once again and good luck with your new job.” She replied. “Later Twilight I’ll drop buy when I can.” Gilda agreed before leaping into the air and taking wing she circled the library tree once and acknowledged twilight’s way with one of her own before disappearing into the distance as the sun finally set for the day. After Gilda had finally disappeared from sight Twilight took the clay figurine into her magical grip and walked inside her home. She made her way into her bedroom and set gift down on her nightstand. From there she tucked herself in and drifted off into sleep, unknown to her Nightmare Moon following soon after further evaluating her plans for the days yet to come and how to best implement them. > Er, surprise? > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- It had been a month since Twilight’s first lesson in Alchemy and much had changed. She had reworked her schedule greatly to allow for time each day for jousting practice, and studying her new magical discipline while also keeping the library running and keeping in touch with her friends and family. For example Twilight no longer stayed up much past nine in the evenings as while she adored late night reading and of course star gazing it was a sacrifice that was needed to make sure she got the sleep she needed for her now very full days. Her days began slightly before dawn where she would get up and have a quick meal. From there it was over to the lot she was renting to practice her jousting. Being new to it Twilight was far from good at jousting. Of the twenty rings she set up for herself to try and impale on her lance her current best was three. And she only managed THAT once. Normally she only got one maybe two rings and ended up either missing the others entirely, or knocking them to the ground. After an hour of practicing that she would pack up and return home taking a shower. Then she’d set about tending to the library and doing some reading for fun if she could manage it. Then would come lunch after a quick meal she’d go around town and do any errands she needed to or just talk with her friends. Once that was done she’d return to the library to mind it for a few more hours before closing shop. Then would come supper and a bit of alchemy before some quick star gazing and finally bed, this was the new routine that Twilight had fallen into. Each week she’d also have a lesson from Zecora on alchemy while also helping her friend to better refine her own studies in equine magic. Yet that’s not to say that nightmare moon hadn’t been busy either. Indeed she would often encourage twilight as she practiced her jousting, and alchemy, have small talk with her during meals. She was working on building her vessel’s trust in herself. But along with that she was also subtly trying to convince Twilight to commission Gilda to make a nightmare Moon sculpture to compliment the one that Gilda had made her before. Twilight was none the wiser to this as it didn’t seem to be a big issue and was actually considering saving up the bits to pay for it. However As twilight was setting up her rings for her first run at jousting today neither the unicorn nor the alicorn spirit she unknowingly played host to would be expecting the day that they would have, it’d shake up more than just their daily grind in more ways than one. As Twilight was going through her paces over in Canterlot her brother and a friend of his were making their way to the train station Intending to head to the small town Shining Armor eager to visit his sister, as letters while good just weren’t the same, while his friend was in part along for the ride but also to see the small town as part of a day off duty in the royal guard but also to do his best friend a favor. Yawning, the two stallions made their way from the platform to the train itself quickly finding a small car to themselves. Few patrons took the early train from Canterlot but that was all the better as it gave the two some time to talk on their ride to Ponyville. Shining Armor was a tall fairly well built unicorn stallion with a white pelt, and two toned blue mane and tail. His cutiemark was a deep blue shield with a six pointed magenta star on it. Signifying not only his ability with combat but also his tendency towards powerful defensive spells like his famed shield spell that while draining was said to be strong enough to encapsulate all of Canterlot. Though using said spell on that scale would likely be past draining and bordering on reckless if not outright dangerous for his health. His friend Stonewall was one he’d met during basic training for the royal guard. While they had taken different paths with shining quickly rising through the ranks from first castle patrol and up into the brass while Stonewall was still a non commissioned officer and often patrolling the market district of the city and the surrounding area they were still close friends. Stonewall was an earth pony and a massive one at that. Standing a full head taller than shining Armor and built like a tank he was an imposing sight to behold. A brick red pelt and a mortar grey mane and tail with a mountain cutie mark. Though as impressive as his build was he wasn’t the dumb muscle one would expect. Indeed a fan of both comic books and the opera, along with being an avid baker he wasn’t as simple as he seemed to be. Even his build was deceptive. For while he sported a rather muscular build and tall height he wasn’t the strongest stallion in the guard, indeed he wasn’t much stronger than the more fit earth ponies. Nor was he slower than most either. No Stonewall stood out for one reason and one reason only. Endurance, he could run for days on end if need be and having a tolerance for pain that was all but unheard of. He was a soldier more geared for war then the seeming unending peace of his home but that didn’t stop him from doing his job. He was something of a liability as he would NOT give up on catching a suspect at all. And considering his size and the decent speeds he could reach that meant that the hazards of an urban environment didn’t hinder his pursuits any. Stonewall jokingly referring to his steamrolling through the city streets as “True parkour” Stonewall had a tendency to cause collateral damage by damaging property in a chase, though injuries were few and far between as it only took a few pursuits before the natives of Canterlot learned to MOVE when they saw the stallion running. Yet he wasn’t without his faults either. He had an incredibly hard time turning off the stoic persona expected of a guard. Coming off as very distant and cold he was also known for an open distaste for certain members of the Canterlot upper classes and nobility, In particular Prince Blueblood, along with jet Set and Upper Crust. To the point where he refused to believe that any action they took even making charitable contributions were genuine acts and not taken to make them look better. The most interesting of all though was this, for all his endurance, for all of his ability to work through pain… Stonewall was immensely susceptible to magic. This fact was kept under wraps by the royal guard. Mainly for security reasons but also for the safety of the pony in question. He was even gifted with a set of armor enchanted to better deflect magic to keep the fact from being known. Though this magic armor was also less sturdy against a blade then the typical armor used by the guard, it was also a deep black rather than gold. Which given his red color gave him a rather intimidating presence and made a number of ponies in the city wary of him. At the moment though he was free of his armor and just relaxing on a couch on the train with his best friend as their transport began to sputter and hiss as it was readying to depart. “You’re going to owe me BIG for this Shinny.” Stonewall huffed looking less than pleased with his friend. “Look, I know it’s an odd, request but come on it’s nothing you don’t do every day while on duty anyway. Besides it’s only for a couple of hours at most.” Shining sighed not wanting to have this argument again as they’d covered the topic several times the week before while setting this trip up. “I don’t care it’s damn disrespectful and I HATE doing it nonetheless. Why else do you think I’m actually making you PAY me for it? Feel like a damn merc.” He replied spitting the last word out. “I’d hardly call a stack of comic books, some concert tickets, and a couple days off to go see some comic book convention ‘blood money’ though I’ll admit it’s kinda pricey.” Shining said with a shrug as the departure whistle blew. “That’s the friend discount if anyone else asked for this kind of favor they wouldn’t get such a good deal, I feel dirty for even accepting it.” Stonewall snorted making his disdain for the favor plain to see. “Look… I just need a distraction so I can actually surprise Sparky rather than have the secret blown wide open. Besides I’m sure there won’t be any hard feelings.” Shining Armor sighed trying to close the conversation for now. “Hmph, better not be. It’s not every day you’re asked to treat a national hero like a fool.” Stonewall grunted also wanting to change the subject. “Though considering what I recall reading about in the papers this is more than a friendly visit isn’t it?” He asked. Shining winced, “Yeah… it is, I hate having to ask her about it but knowing how to take down a hydra could be valuable information for the guard.” He grudgingly agreed as the train began to move. Seeing how uncomfortable the topic was making his friend Stonewall decided to let his friend lead the conversation for the rest of the ride. It was noon now and Twilight had just finished fixing herself a sandwich and getting some chips for a quick lunch. She intended to finish organizing some of her newest alchemical powders before heading into town to chat with her friends. Ever since Zecora got her set up properly and began her schooling in the art of alchemy she’d been eager to work with poison joke and figure out if it had any productive uses or if it was just a malicious plant whose effects could be tempered with a mineral bath. So far she’d learned a good deal about the blue flower. Namely that there were two components to it that caused the reaction it did in any being that brushed against it. One was pollen that was near invisible to the naked eye given its size, and the other was an oil it secreted from its petals. While on their own the two components could still cause the effects of inflicting a joke on a victim it would only last for a few hours. Together however the two formed the longer lasting and much more potent effects that Twilight and her friends had been afflicted with. She was in the process of trying to induce effects she wanted from the plant as she thought a few might have useful applications. For example the shrinking effect that had befallen Applejack might be used as a means to search in confined spaces or to allow for observation of smaller animal and insects on their own scale. So once Twilight finished up her lunch and put her dishes in the sink she made her way into the basement to finish labeling and storing the first twelve vials of poison joke mixtures she’d made. Come the weekend she intended to test them out, first on inanimate objects, and then later on herself. Seeing how she was only using the pollen for this experiment and would be staying in her own home there was little to worry about, though she was careful to learn how to brew the antidote to poison joke before she even began working with the plant. Meanwhile the train had just arrived at the Ponyville station and Shining Armor and Stonewall debarked it along with a few other ponies. The latter sighed as he got ready to do his friend a favor while the former was beaming in delight at getting a chance to visit his little sister. Without a word the large red stallion began to make his way to a building that looked to be made out of candy, marked as Sugarcube Corner to get his task over with. While his friend gave him a smile thanks and started towards the library tree in the town square to meet up with his sister. It didn’t take Shining Armor long to make it to his destination. Maybe five minutes at most. As such when he arrived he was greeted at the front desk not by Twilight or Spike but a sign informing him that the librarian was out to Lunch and would be back shortly. However just as he was about to leave he noted that the door to the basement was ajar and he could hear muffled voices coming from there. Deciding to check out what was going on he made his way to the door and quietly opened it. Seeing Twilight taking pains to arrange some sort of display of phials on a high shelf while Spike snoozed in a corner mumbling to himself he made his way down the stairs thinking that giving Twilight a little spook might be fun. Once at the foot of the stairs he smirked finding the time right. “Boo!” he said in a slightly louder than normal voice. The reaction was not what he’d expected at all. Twilight yelped and lost her balance falling into a sitting position. While the phial she’d been handling with her mouth flew up into the air and bounce off the ceiling. It didn’t shatter but it did crack causing the glittering blue powder it contained to spill on Twilight. Before his very eyes his sister began to shrink! In less than a second she went from four feet tall to a meager six inches. The cracked vile sitting beside her the labeled PJ-P-09 meant nothing to him, though he didn’t really care what the label meant as his sister’s welfare took center stage in his mind. Whoever caused this is so getting a smack to the back of the head when I get a chance Nightmare grumbled as she took in her new point of view. Though at least we know which powder works. So this isn’t a total waste even if we have to restock it. She noted. “By Celestia’s beard Twilight are you alright!” Shining yelled as she dashed over to his sister stopping a few feet away from her, the commotion waking up Spike who gasped at what he saw and quickly made his way over as well. “Twilight are you okay?” Spike asked as he tried to shake the sleep from his mind. While also coming to grips with what his eyes were telling him was true. Twilight smiled at her adoptive little brother. “Yes Spike I’m fine, though if SOMEONE hadn’t scared me I’d be even better.” She told him only mildly annoyed by what had happened as she now knew that one of her formula’s worked. Besides she’d be back to her normal size in a few hours. Add the visit from Shining and the positives far outweighed the annoyance of being small and needing to replace the cracked phial. Shining had the good sense to look sheepish. “Eheheh, sorry. I didn’t know that you were handling anything like that. Otherwise I wouldn’t have scared you.” He apologized. “This isn’t permanent is it?” He added worried about how his sister would get through life at the size she currently was. Luckily for you it isn’t. Nightmare thought to herself not caring that it was Twilight’s brother who caused this as being this small put the mare in great danger. “No, it’s not; I’ll be back to normal in a few hours.” Twilight reassured him with a smile. “Though mind telling me why you didn’t give me any advance warning about this visit? I could have cleared my calendar for the day to spend it with you.” She asked relaxed now though still somewhat annoyed about what happened. “Well for one I wanted it to be a surprise visit.” Shining Armor began. “And for two while I‘m eager to meet your friends I wanted to have a sometime where it was just the three of us before we got swept up into some party by your friend pinkie pie.” He explained. Oh yes, little miss bard. Good call she’d defiantly botch any plans you had to slip in unnoticed. Nightmare agreed though still annoyed. “Hey yeah, how’d you sneak past her anyway?” Spike wondered as Pinkie’s pension for being a spanner in the works came to mind. “That’s easy; I used a decoy, namely Stonewall.” Shining replied with a shrug. Twilight and Spike winced in sympathy for the large stallion as dealing with Pinkie pie could vary between annoying to painful at times, especially when Pinkie Sense got involved. “Was it something I said?” Shining wondered. “Not, really it’s just, well Pinkie can be… very persistent in getting people to smile and well From what I Recall of Stonewall he’s not in for a lot of fun right now.” Twilight explained. There’s an understatement for you. Nightmare chuckled to herself. Meanwhile as Shining Armor was making his way into the basement of the library Stonewall had made his way to Sugarcube corner. The pastry shop was fairly busy given that it was lunch time. Many regular customers were there to grab a bite to eat for lunch and chat. However there were only two figures of note to Stonewall. The first being pinkie Pie. The mare he had to distract so Shining Armor could surprise his sister and get to have a bit of sibling bonding time with her before pinkie pie found out he was in town and pulled a party right out of nowhere for everyone to enjoy. Much as he didn’t like giving her the cold shoulder he intended to d so. However things were complicated by who the second pony of note was, Rarity another element of harmony and national hero, not to mention a very attractive mare that he had a crush on. Sighing in resignation as he figured that his soon to come cold demeanor would torpedo any chances he had with the white unicorn he got in line so he could get to work on his task, and grab something to eat as well. There were only four ponies ahead of him in line. So while he had a bit of a wait it wasn’t too long. Besides the longer he could put this off, the less time he had to be cold to her before Shining finally made his appearance and let him end the charade. Hopefully neither Pinkie Pie nor Rarity would hold it against him for doing a favor for a friend. “Hi! I’m Pinkie Pie! Welcome to Sugarcube Corer how can I help you?” Pinkie Pie asked in a bubbly tone as Stonewall made his way to the counter to place his order. Rarity was sitting down a few feet to the side enjoying a light lunch and talking with her friend between orders. “Yes, you may, I’d like to order, two bear claws and a caramel hot chocolate.” Stonewall began in a neutral tone brushing off Pinkie’s warm welcome and giving her the same blank stare he used while standing at attention on guard duty. “Okie Dokie Loki coming right up!” She began giggle. “And speaking of up wow you’re tall! The only pony I’ve seen who’s taller then you is princess Celestia! It must be great to be so tall! You can reach higher shelves and see farther, and get better view at the movies!” She prattled as she took his bits to pay for his order. “Yes, it does have its uses, though I find I tend to stick out like a sore hoof because of it.” He droned not breaking his dull expression as he waited for his order to be prepared stepping to the side so the next pony in line could get to the register. “It can also be slightly annoying getting through doorways as well.” He added with a shrug. “I bet! It’s no fun to hit your head on a door frame, or have to bend your neck way down to do so!” Pinkie Pie chirped up as she was putting the finishing touches on his drink. She then set the pastries on a tray next to the cup and offered the tray to him. ‘Here’s your order mister… mister…!” She trailed off unable to name the stallion and then gasping deeply as the realization dawned her that she’d never met him before. “Oh my gosh you’re NEW! I’ve got to throw you a party so you feel welcomed and can meet everypony and make lots and lots of friends!” Pinkie gushed in one long breath. “N-no that won’t be needed miss, I’m only in town for the day no need to go to all that effort for me.” Stonewall replied a bit disturbed by her large gasp then her quick rambling. But he didn’t break his disinterested look at all as he moved his tray to his back and began to look for a seat away from Rarity. However there didn’t seem to be any. He was feeling lucky so far that the elegant mare hadn’t seen fit to join in on the conversation. However he wasn’t sure if that would last if he had to take seat at her table and he really didn’t want to destroy what little chance he had with her. Yet… the only free seat was next to her and if he was going to have the best odds of keeping Pinkie Pie here, he’d need to stay in the building. So with a mental sigh of defeat Stonewall approached Rarity. “Excuses me my lady, but would it be okay if I sat next to you everywhere else is full?” Stonewall asked kindly with a bow, though still kept his current expression as Pinkie was still around apparently pondering over what to do for him seeing that he was only in town for the day. “Not at all dear,” Rarity greeted with a smile as she turned her attention to the tall stallion. “Though I wouldn’t mind knowing your name if it’s no trouble.” She continued. “How rude of me, my name is Sar- I mean Stonewall, and thank you for allowing me the pleasure of your company.” Stonewall replied he was blushing now but his fur was hiding it. The fact that he nearly gave his rank in the guard had caused him to stutter. While it wasn’t a big issue if pinkie knew he was in the guard she’d brush him off and thus could ruin Shining’s plans. “And I’m Rarity and really darling it’s not trouble at all.” Rarity replied in return. “Yeah Rarity’s really nice and friendly!” Pinkie Pie piped in as she took another customer’s money. “I bet you two would be friends if you’d just give it a shot.” She continued beaming expectantly. “We very well could Pinkie.” Rarity replied with a giggle. “I’ll take your word for it my lady.” Stonewall said a bit downcast as it looked like he really was going to end up ruining his chances with Rarity. “After all I’m only in town for the day and it’s more for business then pleasure.” He finished before taking a sip of his drink and digging into one of his pastries. “Oh really what kind of business are you here for? Is it super secret? I bet it is! Why else would you have a frowny face in a town as friendly as Ponyville!” Came Pinkie’s bubbly statement. “Yes what business brings you to town sir?” Rarity wondered. “Oh, I’m doing a friend a favor, but he asked me not talk about it much.” Stonewall said softly brushing the matter aside. Then he turned his attention to pinkie Pie. “The bear claws are quite good Pinkie, I dabble in baking myself and I’ve never had much luck with them on my own.” Stonewall said slipping her a sad smile at his admission of not being able to get bear claws to turn out right, though his compliment was honest. “Really! Cool! I worked super hard on them every day! I could give you the recipe if you want!” She replied eager to try and cheer up the dour seeming stallion. “Ah no, please don’t go out of your way for me, You’ve got other customers to tend to.” Stonewall replied politely but also a bit distantly while mentally kicking himself for agreeing to this in the first place. “Besides I’m pretty amateur when it comes to baking, simple cookies, and biscuits are about the height of my skills, well and cornbread, a nice sweet cornbread is fool proof enough that even I can’t muck it up.” He added taking a shot at his inconsistent baking skills in her dull tone hoping that would dissuade Pinkie from going out of her way to help him. However the few articles in the paper ad the letters Shining Armor let him read weren’t nearly enough information to go by for a normal mission much less one involving Pinkie Pie. “Hey no need to be so down! Just let your auntie Pinkie Pie make it all better!” Pinkie began a very large very toothy grin spreading across her muzzle as an idea came to her on how to both cheer up and befriend the stallion. “I’m going to teach you how to bake won’t that be fun!” She gleefully declared bursting with energy. “Wait what? Don’t you have customers to worry about? A-And besides I-I’m not sure this’ll turn out well!” Stonewall tried to protest while still keeping his somber on duty persona up. However he failed to realize that by protesting and not lightening up he was only adding fuel to the fire. “No way gloomy Gus! We’ve got to turn that frown upside down and make you feel welcome and what better way than to help you be a better baker and introduce you to all your new friends in Ponyville!” Pinkie began. “Now quite stalling and let’s get cooking!” She added wrapping an arm around Stonewall’s shoulder and dragging him off into the kitchens. “H-help!” Was all he managed to get out before he was drug away by the peppy pink party pony to perfect his patently pathetic pastry problem. Rarity giggled as she finished her meal. “Good luck Stonewall! And have a good day Pinkie!” She called as she got up from her table to return to her shop and get back to work herself. “Well, all that aside it’s really great to see you both again. You and your friends should try to get up to Canterlot more. “ Shining Armor began. “I’d like to see you two more often and I know Mom, Dad, and Cadance would love to meet your friends as well.” He added trying to push back the less pleasant aspect of his visit for as long as he could. “Well, while train tickets aren’t too pricy the main issue is finding a day when everyone’s able to take some time off for a trip. Plus, well Canterlot’s a very bit city and I’m not sure how well Fluttershy would take to the activity there as compared to the more relaxed Ponyville.” Twilight began. “Though maybe I can start planning something and we could arrange for another trip before that Gala, though I don’t know if we can swing it.” She pondered trying to shuffle dates around in her head. Oh yes, the Gala, the perfect way to help show you why the ‘nobility’ don’t live up to the meaning of the word at all. Nightmare snarked. Still… Rarity did incredible work on that dress, and it’d be a shame if it was only worn once. She mused picturing Twilight in the formal gown and smiling wide at the thought even though no one but her knew it. “I can’t believe that you’re actually going to the Gala for a change. I don’t think you’ve ever attended anything formal aside from prom and mom basically had to drag you kicking and scream to that.” Shining chuckled at the memory. “Oh this from the colt who somehow managed to trot on all of Cadance’s hooves at his own senior prom, even though he could lead a five mile march blinded folded?” Twilight playfully teased in return recalling her old foal sitter telling her about the dance and yet still enjoying every minute of it. "Okay, so I needed some lessons ‘badly’ but I’ve gotten a lot better since then.” Shining admitted. ‘Speaking of new hobbies, I’ve heard you took up jousting recently how’s that going?” He asked both surprised and delighted to hear about Twilight’s new hobby. “I’m making slow progress, but I like it, it’s great exercise and it’s helping with my balance and co-ordination a lot.” Twilight replied somewhat sheepishly. “How bad?” Shining asked Spike. “Well, last I heard three out of twenty is still her record. But she does seem to be able to trot faster and tire slower now.” The dragon replied with a shrug. “Huh well maybe we should head over to your tiltyard and I can give you a few pointers?” Shining offered happily. “I don’t know if Davenport would like that.” Twilight mused. “Davenport?” Shining replied confused. And a hint worried as well “My tiltyard is in a rented lot behind his store I don’t know if he’d want us practicing this time of day as he’d have customers.” Twilight explained. “Oh that’s a relief, for a moment I thought he was a spring partner and I’d have to have words with him about him eyeing my sister during practice and not getting ideas about seeing her muscles rippling and covered in sweat.” Shining sighed having dodged a bullet as he really didn’t want to ruin the visit by having to go all over protective big brother on somepony. … Maybe I can convince Twilight to shift her practice time to either sunset or right before bed. Nightmare thought to herself the picture shining Armor painted being oddly appealing to her. Perhaps once she’d got herself a body she could better teach Twilight how to joust. “Wait you what?” Twilight asked baffled while Spike chuckled at the look on Twilight’s face when Shining finished speaking. “Well, what did you expect? I’m your big brother and anyone who wants to date you has to have my seal of approval to do so!” Shining explained as if it was the most obvious thing in the world. Oh yes, the same big brother who scarred his sister while she was dealing with potentially fatal experimental compounds, your judgment is truly sound. As if I’m letting you anywhere near Twilight once I’ve got a body of my own. Nightmare growled to herself Not liking how much control Shining claimed to have over Twilight’s dating life. After all she was to be Nightmare’s arch mage, and companion she’d have no need of her brother’s protection with Nightmare Moon watching out for her. “Shiny why would you say that? Don’t you trust me to make the right choices in life?” Twilight asked still a bit taken aback by her brother’s statement. Shining sighed but it was best to say this now rather than later. “Sparky… I think you’re the smartest mare I’ve ever met and you tend to have very good judgment most of the time. But romance is a whole other field then what you’re used to and I just don’t want to see you get hurt by some pony who’s good at putting up an act. You’re a beautiful and intelligent mare who anypony would be lucky to have. But you’ve got no experience in this field at all. Add in how close to Princess Celestia you are and someone might try to get close to you just to use you because of that and I just don’t want to see you hurt.” Shining said in a serious tone. He has a point but that’s still no reason to act like he did. Sometimes things can only be learned the hard way and often times… love and romance is one of those things. Nightmare thought to herself. She had no intentions of letting Twilight get hurt but she knew that trying to protect her from everything would do more harm than good in the long run. Shining cleared his throat. “Anyway there’s something else I need to talk to you about before we go and find your friends.” He began deciding to just get it over with and then try and focus on the fun he’d have getting to know his sister’s friends. “Really what’s that?” Spike wondered while Twilight was still pondering over what Shining had just told her. “I… I really don’t want to bring it up as it seemed that your friends and even Princess Celestia didn’t take it well… but we need to talk about you killing that hydra.” Shining explained somberly. “R-really?” Twilight asked a bit meekly fearing her brother might have some harsh words for her on the subject. Oh you’re just a barrel of laughs aren’t you? Nightmare snorted to herself expecting the same. “Yes really. Though don’t worry I’m not upset.” Shining replied with a small smile and a sigh. “In fact I’m impressed more than anything.” He continued. “Huh?!” Spike and Twilight asked together dumbfounded. “Yes, I’ve never heard of a group of ponies taking out a hydra before much less a lone mare.” Shining began pride plain to hear in his tone. "When I heard about the whole ordeal I’ll admit I was terrified at how close I came to losing you two without even knowing about it. However hearing that you not only got yourself and your friends away safely but made sure that hydra wouldn’t be a threat to anyone else I was bursting with pride and relief.” He explained. “Granted I know that you’re not one to take a life likely and I would prefer if you never had to raise your horn in a situation like that again I’m still proud of you for doing what you did. Though being in the guard I know that sometimes you have to take a life to save yourself and others…” He trailed off sighing as he dreaded having to ask Twilight this next part. “This is why… I need you to tell me how you brought it down. It could be very useful information for the royal guard to have and as much as I hate ruining a visit like this by bringing it up I’d much rather ask you in person then hear from a letter, and today’s a far better day to ask then at the Gala.” Shining finished sober hoping they could get through this quickly so he could return to enjoying the rest of the day with Twilight, Spike and their friends. Hmm a valid point, but still a mood killer. That settles it, three backhoofs to the head when I get a body of my own. Nightmare said to herself with a nod. Twilight let out a breath she didn’t know she’d been holding. Beyond grateful that her brother didn’t hold the whole mess against her as princess Celestia seemed to when they last met and while her friends seemed to understand they never really mentioned ordeal and almost seemed to pretend it didn’t even happen. “O-Oh, well there really isn’t much to tell… but okay.” She agreed nervously. “You already know why I was there from my letters and such. But as for how I took it down? Well it was actually dumb luck to a degree.” Twilight began. “From the moment it began to chase us I noticed that one of its four heads acted differently than the others, slower more cautiously then they did. So I figured that if any of its head was the mortal one, the one that if taken out would fell it. It was that one.” She continued. “I also knew from what grandpa Comet Trail told us that a hydra’s heads should never be cut off as it’d only grow two more and come back three times as mad. So I figured I had to take it out without taking the head off. And well, it had pretty big eyes and like I recall from studying combat magic with you… if something can go through the eye it’s got a clear shot at the brain. So… I picked up a rock and threw it at the hydra with all my might.” Twilight explained Wincing as she recalled what was to come next. “I-it went so f-fast it made a sound louder than any cannon could and it… it tore out the back of the hydra’s head and sped off to who knows where. I-I hope that’s enough I really don’t want to talk about this anymore.” She finished looking a bit green at having to recall the incident. “Hey, its okay you didn’t do anything wrong.” Shining said gently as he leaned down and nuzzled his sister to comfort her. “We don’t need to talk about it anymore. I’m sure I’ve got plenty to work with to devise an anti hydra strategy now.” He added trying to further reassure Twilight. “Now… why don’t you hop on my back and we can go rescue Stonewall from Pinkie Pie and I can get to meet your friends okay?” Shining offered glad to finally get this over with. Now that he’d addressed that issue he could enjoy the rest of his visit hear and hopefully cheer Twilight up by meeting her friends. Plus he had a feeling that stonewall was in need of some help given he’d been left to handle pinkie pie for a while now. “S-sure.” Twilight agreed still a bit down even though her brother’s reassurances were helping some. “Spike w-would you mind closing the library early for the day so you can join us?” She asked not wanted to be away from either of her brothers given how she felt at the moment. “Not a problem Twilight!” Spike greed figuring she’d need a bit of extra support plus it’d be a chance to see Rarity again With that the dragon gave Twilight a careful hug and after a few minutes of just holding her headed up stair to get the closed sign and such ready so they could head out for the soon to come party. Once Spike left Shining picked Twilight up with his magic and set her down in his mane. The hair being just tall enough to hid her from sight so she could have a bit more time to collect herself. Once he was sure she was secure he began to make his way of the stairs, going a bit slower than normal so he didn’t risk overbalancing Twilight. He wasn’t about to drop her given her current state. Much as I hate to admit it I think talking about this with her brother might have done some good. Now however it’s up to her friends to help cheer her up. I also wonder how this Stonewall fellow has been holding up under the bard’s assault on his sanity. Nightmare mused to herself. Stonewall was having a hard time keep his stoic persona up at the moment. Though given the situation he was in that was understandable. At the moment the stallion was clad in a vibrant pink apron with had the text “Sweet succulent cheesecake” emblazoned across it’s front in a font reminiscent of what was often used for the titles of dime store romance novels. At the moment he was pulling a pan of muffins from the oven of the bakery under pinkie’s supervision. Ever since she’d dragged him back into the kitchen she’d been teaching him how to “bake” Pinkie Pie style. Witch consisted of fast paced annoying catchy tunes used to illustrate her rather… artistic style of cookery, with each pastry and sweet having its own little high energy ditty. With Pinkie’s high speed work they’d managed to make a number of delectable treats; brownies, cookies, muffins, lemon bars, popcorn balls, bear claws, cakes, fudge and finally cupcakes. The guard stallion’s left eye was beginning to twitch from being the sole target of Pinkie Pie’s tutelage as she seemed to need less the a second to attend to any customer’s needs and thus focused the brunt of her time on him. He’d given up on sneaking out of the kitchen when her head pooped out of a salt shaker to ask him why he was ditching class. He was honestly considering just bust down the back door and bolting for the train station after he set the pan of freshly baked muffins down however it seemed that fate had decided to take pity on him as the service bell rang once more. “I’ll be right back and then we can get started on making those cinnamon buns!” Pinkie pie chirped as she bolted towards the counter. Once she made it to her destination Stonewall heard the odd gasp she made when she realized she hadn’t met him before and he figured he was saved as Shining armor must have finally gotten his rump in gear and come to rescue him from this pink nightmare. Sure enough a moment later Pinkie Pie returned “You’ve got to see this!” She squealed in delight as she once more hauled him around by the shoulders as if he weighed no more than apple fritter. Still once he was dragged to the front half of the store he let out a sigh of relief. Shining Armor was indeed there along with a small purple dragon he guessed was Spike. However the surprises didn’t stop as standing on the counter was a pony he clearly knew to be his friend’s little sister. However she was downright tiny at only a half a foot tall. “Huh?” Came his less then intelligent reply. “It’s a long story, though I got to say, lovin’ the apron there Stonewall.” Shining snickered. “Yuk it up pretty boy, just for that I’m doubling my price.” Stonewall snapped back finally dropping his stiff persona. “Doubling the price?” Twilight asked confused. "Hey why are you so grumpy?” Pinkie Pie wondered. “Oh I could explain it but I figure Shining should do it considering this whole mess is his idea.’ Stonewall grunted. At that Twilight Pinkie and Spike turned their attention to Shining who had the god grace to look a bit sheepish. “Well you see, Stonewall here is a friend of mine. He’s also part of the royal guard. I wanted my visit to be a surprise however I didn’t want to risk running into you first Pinkie, so I convinced Stonewall to do me a favor and distract you by acting like he does while on duty though he doesn’t much like doing that.” He began “Add in that you six are basically national heroes for defeating Nightmare Moon and getting that dragon to leave without causing any trouble so he was even less fond of giving you the cold shoulder so I had to arrange a deal to get him to play along.” Shining concluded a bit upset with himself for how he’d treated his friend given how Stonewall’s time must have gone if he was in such a foul mood. “I’m more annoyed then I am angry but yeah, we’re re-negotiating a price once we leave town. Now if you’ll excess me, I’ve got to put Cup Cake’s apron back up.” Stonewall sighed the anger starting to drain from his face now that he’d gotten Shining to admit to the whole mess and his impromptu cooking lessons was over and left to go do as he said. “Okay that explains why he was so grumpy but why’s Twilight so tiny?” Pinkie asked her curiosity returning. “I’ll explain that once everyone’s here so we don’t have to repeat the story five different times.” Shining replied. “Now why don’t you go round up your friends so we can have a party and get to know each other while Stonewall and I are still in town?” he suggested. “Okie Dokie Loki! I’ll be back in a flash!” Pinkie Pie agreed as she darted up to round up the rest of the girls for a party at sugarcube corner. “So, how much did he ask for at first?” Spike wondered. “A stack of comic books, tickets to a concert and a few days of to go to some convention called ‘Comic Con’ over in Sandmargo.” Shining replied. “Though I’m betting he’s going to add a few things to the list and frankly I don’t blame him, Pinkie Pie’s high energy personality didn’t seem to sit well with him, especially given how he was likely in a foul mood to begin with given he had to give her the cold shoulder.” He mused. “I don’t think she’ll hold it against him, Pinkie isn’t the type to hold a grudge.” Twilight noted as they waited for their Pink friend to return. Before Shining could reply the door to the kitchen opened and Stonewall walked out sans apron and looking to be in a better mood. “Well that’s something at least.” He said as he made his was from behind the counter to join Spike and Shining Armor. “I’d rather not be on her bad side national hero or not. She seems nice enough, a bit over eager to make sure that everyone’s happy but really there are worse things in life then trying to spread joy.” Stonewall sighed as he stretched a bit to get some kinks out of his back. The four made some small talk over the next half hour or so while Pinkie Pie was out gathering the rest of the girls Luckily the bakery didn’t have any customers while Pinkie Pie was out and about. Of the four mares Fluttershy and Applejack took the most time to convince to come over. The latter because she didn’t want to slack off on her work at the farm ad the former because of how nervous she was about meeting new ponies. Still between Pinkie pleading with Applejack and Angle Bunny being his typical blunt self the whole gang was brought together at the bakery at last. Once they were all there an some baked goods and drinks had been gathered for the small celebration Shining began to explain to the rest why Twilight was currently as tiny as she was. “… So, yeah when the dust settled, well you can see the results for yourself.” He finished rubbing the back of his neck with a hoof awkwardly at having to tell the tale. The reactions were varied but not unexpected Rainbow Dash and Pinkie were having a good laugh about it, The former because she found it funny that the one time Twilight slacked off on following each and every step on her list one of her ‘egghead’ experiments blew up in her face. While Pinkie was just amused by how the whole thing was an accident. Rarity tittered a bit at how silly the whole ordeal was, and Fluttershy and Applejack had their own reactions while both were concerned for their friend’s safety Applejack was less then amused by it all. “Ah hate ta say it Twi, but it kinda serves ya right. Ya know it was too soon to be messing with that stuff. Seeing how you’ve only been learning about alchemy fer about a month.” She huffed. “I know I should have been more careful. But poison joke needs to be studied, Not just so we know what effects it can have and whether or not they can have positive uses. But also to see if it has other properties that we aren’t aware of yet.” Twilight replied a bit sheepishly. Before Applejack could reply a blue glow began to surround Twilight and soon she began to grow her body rocketing back up to its normal high. Nearly making her fall off the table she’d been sitting on the whole time she’d been having her conversation with her friends. “Well that was abrupt.” She mused as she quickly climbed down off the table onto the floor thankful that she hadn’t ruined anyone’s food as there had been nothing but her on said table. “I’m sorry we didn’t meet under the best of circumstances and I hope you won’t hold it against me.” Stonewall apologiesed to both Pinkie Pie and Rarity feeling a bit down over the whole mess. “Hey it’s no big deal! You were just doing your friend a favor, and now I know why you were being so grumpy! It’s just an act and one you have to do all the time! Its no wonder why you’re so good at it!” Pinkie replied brightly brushing the matter off. “Indeed Stonewall, it really wasn’t anything personal and really I don’t see any fault on your part, You were just trying to help out a friend and were caught in a bit of a rough spot because of it.” Rarity agreed with a nod. From there the party went on without much more excitement, However all too soon Shining Armor and Stone wall needed to leave to catch a train back to cantelot. So the party wound down and Twilight and the rest saw them off promising to see them again soon. From there the group went their spate ways. With Fluttershy returning to her home, Applejack to the farm, Rainbow Dash to a cloud to get some sleep and Rarity to her shop. Pinkie walked with Twilight and Spike until they reached Sugarcube corer and then had to bid them goodbye as well. Once Twilight and Spike were home they locked up the library and began to get ready for bed. It had been a long day and they were all tired, Eager to get some rest to start the next day. With Nightmare Moon ready to try and convince Twilight to get that sculpture commissioned once more figuring that the visit from her brother would put her in a better mood and thus she might be more receptive to the idea in the morning after jousting practice.
