Embracing the Darkness

Chapter 6
It was raining. The Pegasus from Cloudsdale had pulled out all the stops, as heavy raindrops fell from the sky in a curtain-like state. The citizens of Canterlot all took refuge in their homes or under the covers of their local coffee shop. The palace was no better, as the rain bounced off the backs of the guards. They huddled closer to each other, trying to preserve body heat.
A guard, who was standing on a tower battlement, sneezed. “Guh… it’s bad enough that we have to serve that evil witch, but now we have to stand out in this blasted rain!”
His partner nodded, as he whipped his mane away from his eyes. “Agreed, but what can we do? Now that the Princess is missing, I doubt we can do anything to stop her. I even heard that the Elements of Harmony didn’t work on her.”
The first guard sneezed again. “Yeah… I wonder what really can stop her now…” He glanced back at his partner. “That reminds me, what happened to your brother that went missing when Nightmare Moon attacked the first day?”
The second guard lowered his head, not sure if his eyes are wet because of the rain or his tears. “I still haven’t heard anything, but neither did any of the other families. At this rate, we’ll never know…”
The first guard patted the sad pony’s back. “I’m sure he’ll turn up sooner or later. Just don’t give up hope and I know things will get better.”
The other guard smiled. “Thanks.” They stood silently, trying to keep the rain out of their eyes and back.
*Boom*
The second guard flinched slightly. “Hey, did you hear that?”
*Boom*
The first guard nodded. “Yeah, it sounds like somepony broke something back at the castle.” He looked over his shoulder, trying to stare through the curtain of rain. “But, that doesn’t make any sense. We’re at the farthest towers and it’s raining.”
The other guard shuddered, dislodging some of the water out of his mane. “In that case, I’m not going anywhere near the castle right now. Nightmare Moon must be really angry with something… or somepony.”
“Yeah, I really feel sorry for whoever’s at the receiving end of that…”
The alicorn in question currently stood in the center of the throne room. She breathed heavily through her nose, as she stared at the broken remains of what was once the jewel encrusted throne itself. Nightmare continued to stare at the chair for about a minute, before letting out an angry cry. “GAAAAAAH!” She picked up the remains of the chair with her horn and launched it into the air, before crushing it to dust. The goddess flicked her eyes around until she spotted a group of frighten ponies, huddling in a corner. “Clean up this mess and get me a new chair! I’ll be in my chambers. But, I don’t want anypony disturbing me, understand?!”
Not seeing if they answered or not, Nightmare Moon quickly teleported into her bedroom. She found herself looking out of her window, still seething with anger. ‘A week! I’ve wasted an entire week trying to make her complete when I could’ve used that time to train her!’ She picked up a chair, which was unfortunately in the room, and smashed it against a wall. Nightmare Moon eyed the broken remains, trying to find some relief from it. However, the longer she stared at the chair the more she felt guilty. ‘I shouldn’t have done that… The pony must have put a lot of work into making that chair. I think I should write a letter and apolo…gize…’ Her eyes widen in horror. ‘What in Equestria was I thinking just now?!’ The alicorn quickly pulled a pillow towards her and screamed into it. ‘How?! How is she still capable of holding back? This is completely unheard of and just plain crazy!’
Nightmare began remembering the past few days, only to remind herself of her complete and utter failure to change a single mare. ‘I don’t understand… I’ve tried everything to the point where forcing her is the only way!’ She pulled her face from the pillow. ‘But… I just can’t bring myself to do it either! I can’t force another pony to do something that she doesn’t want…to…’ Her eyes widen in horror, slamming her face into the pillow again. ‘And another thing, these… these feelings and thoughts has gotten worse! They will not stop tormenting me!’ The alicorn suddenly felt something snap. ‘It’s her fault that I’m like this… It’s. All. Her. Fault!’ Letting go of the pillow, Nightmare Moon cried, “That’s it… I’ve had enough! Guards!”
The doors to her room burst open and a pair of guards rushed in. “Yes, your Majesty?”
“Bring Twilight Sparkle to me… immediately!”
Inside the now repaired library, Twilight Sparkle awoke by a loud pounding noise. ‘Ugh…’ “What now?” She slowly pulled herself out of her bed and begrudgingly opened the door. ‘So hungry…’
A large hoof reached out and began pulling the purple unicorn down the stairs. “Miss Sparkle you have been summoned to the Princess’s quarters. You will come with us… immediately!”
Still being pulled by the hoof, Twilight almost tripped. “Wait! What’s going on?” Her mouth began salivating at the sight of the pony’s neck in front of her. ‘No! Keep it together… Keep. It. Together!’ She began shaking, feeling as if her throat was a scorching desert… on fire!
“We do not know.” He continued, completely oblivious at the sight of the shaking unicorn. “All we were told is that we need to bring you to her.” No further words were spoken, as the guard continued to pull Twilight to the queen’s chamber.
‘Oh… please just hold out… I can do this… I can do this…’ Twilight repeated the words over and over in her head, not even noticing that they were already standing in front of the door. “Huh?” The unicorn whipped her head to the left and right. “We’re here already?”
“Yes, Miss Sparkle…” The guard lifted a hoof and knocked on the door. “My Queen, Twilight Sparkle has arrived.”
“Enter…” The voice that came out was a low, hissing whisper.
Twilight gulped, as she slowly inched the door open. As soon as the unicorn’s tail passed over the threshold, the door slammed shut with a bang. Twilight, still shaking from the noise, lowered herself down into a bow. “Y-you wanted to see me, Nightmare Moon?”
Nightmare Moon didn’t even blink when she said, “You’re leaving, Twilight, tonight.”
The unicorn whipped her head up in surprise and the thought of the hunger momentarily left. “Leaving? You mean like out of the castle?”
The alicorn nodded. “That is correct. I’m sending you back to wherever you came from… Ponyville was it?”
Twilight’s mouth fell open. “But…but why?” ‘Am I dreaming right now?’
Nightmare Moon made an angry snort. ‘Just looking at you makes my blood boil.’ “Because I seem to have made a mistake in making you my servant and I no longer need you anymore.” The alicorn turned her back at the unicorn. “You are a complete failure and I wish to not waste my time with you any longer.” ‘I want you to be gone… away from me. Far away!’
Twilight couldn’t believe what she was hearing. ‘Is this really happening?’ She never felt so happy about failing in something in her entire life. ‘I can go home and see my friends!’ She smiled slightly. “I understand, Nightmare Moon. I’ll go and pack my belongings then.”
“No need. I’ve already prepared your things, Twilight.” The alicorn whirled around and faced the unicorn. “In fact, just go… right now.” Nightmare Moon ignited her horn and she felt herself pour all of her magic into the mare. ‘Go away and take your curse with you!’ With a bright flash, Twilight Sparkle disappeared. The room immediately became deathly quiet and the alicorn let out a sigh of relief. ‘At last… that accursed unicorn is gone!’ Nightmare Moon broke the silence with a laugh. “HA! Gone! Thank the almighty creators! She’s finally gone!” Her laughter died down, when she heard the soft knocking of hooves at her door. “Come in! Come in!”
The door slowly opened and standing in the doorway was a familiar navy blue Pegasus. “My Queen, are you alright?” Valor raised an eyebrow when the goddess of the night giggled.
Nightmare Moon couldn’t help but smile. “Yes, Valor, I’m alright… In fact, I’m perfectly happy right now!” She threw her hooves into the air. “Don’t you see, Valor? She’s gone, she’s finally gone!”
The captain of the guards blinked. “You sent Miss Sparkle away?”
“Yes, captain, I’ve sent Twilight back to Ponyville.” The alicorn stood up straight, her giddy feelings already fading. “Now I can truly rule Equestria with an iron hoof, Valor.” She began walking to the direction of the throne room, followed closely by the captain. “Come! We have much work to do!”
Valor leaned in slightly and asked, “Does this mean that you will need another pony to drink from, Master?”
Nightmare Moon paused. “Humm… you’re right, Valor.” She began walking again. “Have the Night Shadows brought here to the castle.”
The navy blue Pegasus bowed his head. “At once, your Majesty.” He turned and began walking towards the castle gates, a small smirk forming on his face. “Perfect.”
Author’s Notes: I would just like to apologize for the short chapter, but I just couldn't see it ending properly anywhere else...
To those who wished to see the "fight" between Nightmare Moon and Twilight, don't lose hope. I will be uploading the "battle" between the two at a later date. The only reason I won't post it right now is because... I don't really want to center 2-4 chapters on their "fight", you know what I mean? It really won't have any story progression and so... completely pointless. However, I will post it as a bonus chapter or something...later.
And now twilight will run rampant in Ponyvill noming on all those delicious ponies
I am pleased to see that this story is drawing my attention more then when I first started.
So she is still holding out about the time the Night Shadows' return, but it sounds like she will not be for much longer unless something happens. But it was long enough for Nightmare to surrender. Twilight is the victor!
Somehow I doubt that this is the end of Nightmare's problem. I wonder what she will do if it is not?
And I guess we will soon know about the Night Shadows, unless we are going to have to wait for Twilight to hear of it.
Hmm... I wonder if the influence on Nightmare comes from Twilight not taking a drink, and nopony has ever lasted long enough for the problem to emerge before?
And will Twilight tell the others of her condition? I expect she may want to avoid it, but she will be hard pressed to not give in.
Edit
The chapter length is fine for the part of the story it covers. Better to have an odd sized chapter than stopping in a bad place.
So far as Twilight's resistance goes, it might be best to let readers infer what it was like and provide some hints about it like having Twilight remember a little bit about it at times if it ever seems appropriate that she do so. Possibly at some point she could note the tempation is worse now in Ponyville as she spends more time in the presence of others. Lots of others.
Yeah... Somehow I don't see things working out for Twilight. I'm hopeful though :D
255040 Only on one probably. she only needs to drink once to be complete, and keep that one. It will probably be Sweetie Belle, with how accident prone she is
255275
Or Rarity cannot stand see Twilight in pain... after all, she is Generosity. I suspect it would be far harder to resist if the pony is offering.
Not sure than one pony would be enough, unless they get regular blood transfusions.
Pinkie's blood would likely put any blood sucker into a diabetic coma.
255427
Are you sure she has blood and not cream filling?
255482 Pinkie the Twinkie?
255482 That or she has some kinda caffeine/sugger combo instead of blood.
255599
Or it may depend upon the day of the week, kind of like some restraunts have a daily special. Pinkie is so random.
Chapter, Y U SO SHORT?
You really need to write more than just a meager 1,400 words a chapter.
There was an unintended cliffhanger here. Unintended because it requires the reader to pay attention to common sense - put a starving cannibal in a room full of his best friends and watch the internal struggle before he finally gives in - that's basically what happens when Twilight, a starving vampire, goes to a town FULL OF PEOPLE (who are food for both cannibals and vampires), and is surrounded by friends.
- If she resists that, you're turning Twi into a godmod. A Mary Sue. A living deus ex machina. The temptation Twi's going to face in Ponyville is going to be ridiculous. I again bring up my example of the starving cannibal.
- If she just feeds on animals, you're going pull a Twilight on us. And you know full well which Twilight I'm talking about.
Fact: It took me longer to make this comment (about an hour of going back, adding stuff, deleting stuff, trying to sound like less/more of a troll, trying to be harsher/nicer, ect) than it did for me to read this chapter, and that SHOULD NOT HAPPEN.
255650
Twilight was asleep when called for; therefore, it is (real) night and everypony should be in bed when she gets there. Unless Twilight's sleep scedule is off.
Friends should be easier to resist drinking than a random pony unless they are offering, and it is possible non-ponies (Spike) are not on the menu*.
* Only that she is to feed on somepony to change has been mentioned, nothing else.
212067 I call your Simon Belmont and raise you Rainbow Dash.
255847Hah haha ha. That was pretty funny and cute
255354 Depends on how much is needed. Remember, NMM fed on Twilight, and only Twilight the entire time since she was release. And as we have seen, Twilight can resist it for a long time of needed.
255983
However the Valor seemed suprised by Nightmare sticking to her alone. Possibly it is not just about 'blood' and instead is a matter of the pony magic infused in the blood. Would explain how they can live on 'just' blood (if they do), as that does not seem like a subsitute for the normal pony diet in terms of nutrition.
Which would mean it depends on the pony.
I see this almost becoming a bit like Blood+
I don't know why but i find the idea of Pinkie being able to kill vampiresvia diabetic coma oddly fitting for her given how off the wall she is.
Also if Twilight had to tell her friends about her condition I wonder how Fluttershy would react. On the one hand she wouldn't be able to stand Twilight having to bear that type of gnawing mind rending pain. On the other I can't see her condoning what Twilight needs to do in order to survive now. She may have smypathy for preditores like Manticores and Timber wolves but they typicaly don't prey on beings like vampires do. Someone brought up caniblisem and really that's what vampires are a less nasty more empowered camibles.
Well Twilight you should be very proud of yourself you've lasted a full week now and for the moment still going strong. You really do have incredible willpower to resist cravings this strong for such a long spand of time. Still I can't see you avoiding this for much longer and much as I'd rather not see you fall from grace it seems unavoidible though the worst part will be seeing how Nightmare reacts when that happens.
Well, it's implied that no pony need die because of being bitten, so nothing too horrible is likely to happen. Naturally, that could cause vamponyism (is that even close to correct?!) to spread, if Twilight is unable tor restrain herself.
I kind of wonder, if drinking blood and stealing magic both occur, then perhaps Nightmare Moon's problem here is that she ingested a bit of the Element of Magic along with Twilight's blood. They are the elements of harmony, and Nightmare Moon could be said to be spreading discord, so maybe she's suffering a bit of an unintended reaction to exposure to one of the elements of harmony.
What I want to know, is whether that golden medallion might bear a faint resemblance to the Sun, where Celestia has gone/been sent to, and what the leadership and motives of this supposed group of night worshippers, the Night Shadows?, really is.
Also, this story seems to be Dark Lite, since nothing really, truly Dark has actually occurred yet so to speak.
Be brave Twilight, and tell your friends about your condition. They're your friends and I'm sure they'll understand. So you're a vampony now; big deal! I'm sure your friends will be more than willing to help you. Besides, you all need to coordinate to figure out how to resist Nightmare Moon and her nefarious agenda!
255040i thought i was the only one who thought that would happen but i think she will lose it around her friends during a wlcome home party or something not just go insane on the townfolk
256450
The next test of will is if she can manage to not kill the first pony she feeds on after waiting so long.
And the circumstances matter for how far she falls of course. Better if she does not just drink random, unwilling ponies.
257094
Only Nightmare may spread vampony-ism, or is suppose to be the only one.
257197
I think it will be rather obvious something is wrong with Twilight, and they have a secret weapon if she refuses to talk:
-----------------------------------------
I wonder if at some point she will run off into Everfree forest to avoid ponies and meet the Zebra and gain some forgotten lore that will be helpful?
Even if she can find ponies willing to let her feed upon them it will be a process of trail and error to figure out just the right balence of getting enough so that the hunger goes away but not doing any lasting harm to the doner pony in question. On a related note is it only Nightmare who can feed without leaving a lasting mark or all vamponies?
258117
Then she should go slowly the first time. And going unconcious is a good sign that things are getting dangerous.
I would think that unless Nightmare is specifically casting a spell of healing then the bite of vamponies heals up naturally. To bad for the victims they do not seem to come with anistetic like most blood sucking creatures.
True she should go slowly but will she? I'm not so sure she'll be able to do so once she finaly gives in a feeds given how long a span of time she's gone without feeding.
I asked about leaving a mark as if I'm recalling right it's mentioned both times that we see Nightmare feed on Twilight that she didn't leave a visible wound just a bloodstain. I brought it up because willing doner or not because if it doesn't heal up as quickly as Nightmare's bites Twilight's little secret won't last long.
258173
How to achieve restraint is not too complicated: have other trustworthy ponies on hoof to keep her in line. My guess is when the pain is on she will not have the focus to use magic so Applejack and Rainbow should be able to manage. But we shall see next chaper that is about her I suppose.
All of this assumes there is no critical point at which she will have 'beat' it and always have control* (like Nightmare did after being gone 1,000 years). Or something. Seems unlikely given the description she will make it through the entire story without drinking any.
* Even then I would expect going for too long without would have side effects.
Do we even know if Nightmare was awake and aware the whole time she was on the moon? Granted her being the first vampony and mother to the race might have some perks like the ability to better resist the cravings and the like, still her reaction to Twilight feels significant to me especaily given her nature as the first vamponie i think her time on the moon might provide some answers here. If she is then her being so shocked at a mortal pony withholding from drinking so long shouldn't have been such a source of shock and frustration to her. If she wasn't then her attitude tward's Twilight's resistence makes more sense as she herself didn't go too long without a drink either.
258318
(Releated to an earlier post and not the one being replied to)
I just recalled on movie that had vampires drink the blood of other vampires. It was a redition of Dracula, and one of the steps for making a vampire was drinking the blood of the vampire that bit them previously.
Do vampony hunters still exist at this point, or did the line of work die out due to lack of prey? Seeing as Valor is still alive, I would imagine there to be at least one or two ponies still hunting him.
Gwenio, that's an intresting version of the vampire mythos and i think it's rather fitting as the extra step of having to drink from the vampire that created you is a good idea as it helps to keep the numbers down. As awsome as the idea of an army of vampires is I think they work better in smaller numbers as it allows them to stay hiddon better and keeps them from expanding too fast and over extending thier ability to aquire prey.
Simon Belmane, Blade, Buffy, Morphious, Vanhelsing witchever one of you is lurking about you missed the queen mother of all vamponies I think it's high time you did something about that.
i see orange juse in the future... namly for the mane six dieet... rarity seems pale already but the others will look a bit whitter next chapters XD
i hope you dont have twilight loose controll in ponyville that would be a nightmare and still poor twilight o and nmm is going to freak out without twilight near by and now without further ado let zhe shenaniganz begin.
So can Twilight get back at the right time to save NMM? Twilight has a Psychic connection to her master so she will certainly return when NMM needs her the most. The real victory will be for NMM, once Luna is again Integrated into her ego. "The whole is greater than the sum of it's parts".
258318 It was never really clear to me that Luna didn't in fact serve out NMM's lunar sentense for her. From most fan art we see luna not NMM trapped on the moon. NMM was the coward, not Luna, Lulu was just left to suffer the punishment.
264266
Depends on how separate Luna and Nightmare are, which is something that the show never indicated.
Also the view that Luna was wandering around while Nightmare retreated may be propaganda from NLR to stire up sempathy.
The third view (that does not show up in art) is that neither were on the moon, but rather they were the moon and were therefore not fully concious of time passing at all.
Twilight will be back soon Nightmare Moon... I'm sure of it.
...
NO BITING TWILIGHT!
