Just to make sure, I imagine the scholar as a slightly more elderly stallion. Not granny smith age, but not as young as the mane six or Big Mac anymore.
Thus the swearing seems to be a bit over the top and pulls me out of the immersion somewhat.
If you want to make him younger, than this surely achieves that. But if you want to portray a more elderly and more sorrowfull stallion, you might want to cut back a bit on the colorfull swearing. ;)
Okay, I like this guy already. He's got a good heart and see the madness that is going on around him.
(And I too wonder how this all happened. What, did the Elements just go insane all of the sudden? Are the ponies of Equestria so bloodthirsty. It's too hard to imagine that a peaceful nation that doesn't even have much of a standing army and is so bent on friendship, start tearing itself apart and lower itself to such evils.) Celestia weeps for her country, tears lost upon madponies.
