T

His name is Lentils and his only friend is Rice. Together they make a fine dish.

Even though his therapist is helping him, throughout his life all Lentils wanted to do was be left alone. It's not that he doesn't like others, nor is it that others don't like him, but... Rice, being his only support, gives him good ideas and bad ideas to try out:

"Pour that coffee on the flank of Cherry to get her attention," said Rice. "And if she doesn't like you for that, shave your eyebrows to make it up to her."

Sufficing to say, poor Lentils can get very confused. It doesn't help that only he can hear Rice.

Maybe Lentils can be friends with the barking mare.

I wonder what that colt will think if he ever finds out the one filly really did chuck that rock. Probably not too happy to find out he got beaten up because his friend thought it would be funny to fling a rock at a pony they thought was crazy.

I can't quite tell if this is supposed to take place during the same time period as we see in the show, because his CD player implies it's probably a while in the future.

In retrospect, I can see how the CD player's a little out of place. It's supposed to take place in the same time as the show. Lentils passes the CMC as he starts his walk -- some fillies in maroon cloaks :applecry::unsuresweetie::scootangel:

Yeah, I figured that was probably the case, and those were most likely the CMC, hence the remark about how he could be friends with that mare who ran around barking in the show. I almost ignored the CD player as just one of those things, due to it being significant for the story, but I don't know, something made me decide to mention it. It always feels a little odd to see stories include modern (or semi-modern) human technology in Ponyville, but I don't know how this story would have even worked without it, so eh.

Maybe he could carry around a tiny little victrola.

You know, that's a pretty cool idea. I like it

The barking mare... idea for a sequel or reference :pinkiecrazy:

BTW. Love the icon.

Now this was definitely an adventure in trying to work with a mind that is troubled from a condition nobody would ever want. Lentals is so talented but the submissive of the personalities while Rice is the dominant who often ends up bringing Lentals to actions he would not wish to do.

To think of how difficult it would be to control an inner personality that can be hostile to yourself or others is frightening. The closest I came to this was when I had those unfortunate times of being suicidal and when I was genuinely on the verge of hurting someone really bad. I at least had the benefit of not having a condition that created a false personality in me. However to know if one existed could have made me follow through on such actions is frightening.

I like the epilogue. Although Lentals is now, if I guess, in a sort of Group Home he is safe. He has help to keep Rice from taking him over like he had in the past. The fact he has a doctor who cares to work with him and provide him such helpful tools to cope with Rice is also heartwarming.

Great insight on a mental condition that unfairly can ruin someone's life by no fault of their own. The way the personalities talked and clashed seemed much like I'd expect someone battle that 'other part'. Quick, constant, and ominipresent.
