Twilight Sparkle's coronation was just over a month ago. Organizing Winter Wrap-Up back in Ponyville kept the longing questions of what she was to do next at the back of her mind for a while, but now that's passed as well. Spring is here, and everything seems the same...
Princess Celestia knows that they could be facing a big problem if they cannot figure out how to create more of Snowdrop's special stars. She devises a plan which seems somewhat absurd -- go back in time and retrieve the little filly, then bring her back to the present time, over a thousand years past where she belonged. Her faithful student and newest princess, Twilight Sparkle, seems like just the pony for the job. If she keeps Twilight and Snowdrop together, the new alicorn might just learn a thing or two.
The magic required to pull off the feat will be difficult, but it's their only chance. Celestia begins to write a letter to call her old student to Canterlot, hoping she will be up to the task.
This story is inspired by and based around the tale of Snowdrop, a blind filly who changed how everypony thought of winter on the centennial anniversary of the Princess' rule over Equestria, at the 100th Spring Sunrise. The idea of Snowdrop was taken from Silly Filly Studios' fantastic fan animation of the same name, which can be found here.
Some parts of Chapter 3 are somewhat sad, but I intend for most of this story to be fun and happy, and will not be tagging it as a sad fic. The scenario in which the majority of the story (which begins in Chapter 4) kind of required this sad portion to be put in. Some of the recollection of Snowdrop's tale in Chapter 2 is purposely inaccurate (This is partially explained in Chapter 3).
This is the first time I've ever ventured down the path of writing fanfiction, so I apologize if it's not up to snuff. I feel like I write too much. Do I write too much? Any thoughts or comments would be appreciated.
Hey, I don't want to shoot you down or anything, but I was the lead animator on Snowdrop, so this would kind of be our 'canon' we've established:
Snowdrop didn't create the only snowflakes that existed. She only first learned how to make them, and taught the other pegasi how to do so as well.
Every year after Snowdrop's time, they dropped a snowflake at the start of winter as a ceremonial thing. They still know how to make them, as they were seen doing in season 1, episode 16, and if you noticed there were many flakes falling in the background with the original one.

I kind of figured the true story would have gone along those lines, after all, the end of your animation didn't show her final/original snowflake as the only one in the sky. It'd only make sense... otherwise the ending of your story probably would have been met with a lot more worry (like the beginning of this one is).
In all honesty, I doubt very much of this story will be about "relearning" the talent or otherwise making more snowflakes, because that's just not very interesting! Kind of intended this more as an overall learning experience for them both, in all sorts of ways.

Agreed, but I'm guessing Celestia doesn't have enough power to bring all three of them back. I suppose Celestia could have taught Twilight the inverse version of the spell she used to send Twi back in time, but that would have taken to much time maybe?
Nitpick: (and this may be answered in the next chapters): Snowdrop seemed to imply that Luna and the filly had a long friendship that lasted the majority of her life, and since Luna "never got to [say goodbye]" I'm thinking Luna's banishment happened in there somewhere. Twi is taking that away now.... hrmmmm

If you reference "It's About Time" (S2E20) it is mentioned that a pony can only use the spell to go back in time once. Twilight already used hers, so having her cast the spell on herself, to me, didn't make much sense. Also, show-canon seems to vary in its implication of whether or not Twilight is more magically powerful at the present time than Celestia, but I personally see the Sun Goddess as being the strongest, therefore capable of holding the spell longer.
SFS' short certainly made it seem that Luna was close to Snowdrop at some point after what we saw. The timeline break is essentially inevitable and has been at the back of my mind as I come up with more ideas for the story, but keep in mind that so far we've spanned a period of time less than 24 hours.
