It's the official language of Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and Comoros. Only about 5 million people in the world use it as their primary language, according to wikipedia, but it's a language that's been around for ages.
IIRC, the MLP team wanted Zecora to speak Swahili outside of her rhymes, but they were unable to find an official translator in time. The foreign language she uses in "Bridle Gossip" is just made-up gibberish. I went with Swahili for this fic to keep it true to her original character and to hopefully send a few readers to a translator for an "ah-ha!" moment.
