2242491 I considered your analogy, but after reading the event over in the story, it doesn't make that much sense. It's more like volunteering to be the first person to go to any universe ever, but instead of going to Universe A, you f*** up and go to Universe B instead. Given you didn't know the infinite variables of either Universe, volunteering means preparing yourself mentally for anything from talking animals to hell spawn. Given how bad reacted to the former of the two, I consider him lucky he didn't wind up anywhere else (though we all knew he was heading here in the first place).
I would say whether or not one would loss their s*** getting tossed in a new place can depend on the nature of the place itself. Like in a end of the world demonic hell-hole or a bright and sunny place of peace and tranquility, whether or not brain will interpret itself being in life threatening place but that just my opinion.
