Wow. Within a minute of approval, I've already got my first dislike! :pinkiehappy:

So... is it because you hate noir, hate clop, or hate me? Just curious. :rainbowwild:

Can someone please explain what noir is to me? I don't get it. I've always thought it was like a 1920's/1930's detective theme, but I'm not sure. And it wasn't that bad, either. I'll like it to even you out.

Noir is a film style, mostly from the 40's and 50's, primarily arising out of the hardboiled detective and crime novels of the 20's and 30's. While its heyday was just after WWII and into the early 50's, it's been an incredibly influential style that came back in the 70's and 80's as neo-noir. Noir stylings can be seen not just in true neo-noirs like Chinatown, but also in films like The Big Lebowski (an intentional spoof of The Big Sleep) and even Batman Begins.

2214212 I imagine you could take your pick of any number of reasons people would downvote this, pretty much all of it sensitivity to things like clop, abusing Rarity, clop, puns, clop, OC-hate, clop, and whatever else strikes at a moment's notice.

As short as it is and as simple as the premise is, I liked it and thought it was well-written and a little bit of fun (though I am partial to Rarity). So, upvoted.

Don't forget to mention that it's often characterized by moral ambiguous heroes, femme fatales, and grim urban settings-- all of which, unsurprisingly, make an appearance here!

I rather liked this, though it should be said that I'm a fan of noir to begin with. Atmosphere tends to be the biggest part of the genre, and you do a good job maintaining it! That said, it's a little on the short side, which made some of the elements seem a bit rushed. The length did have some benefits, however; in particular, it added weight to the ending (which I thought fit the tone perfectly).

In short, maybe expand a little, but there are some strong points here already. Good job!

2214292 Oh, I think I get it now.

Thank you both. :) As for it seeming short, that's courtesy of the 1-hour time limit with the SMP prompts, which gave us this one.

I'm debating writing the next prompt in this same universe; it was fun to stretch my hardboiled detective muscles, and it's another prompt that allows for significant description.

2214495 One hour for 1600 words that well-written would be a freaking miracle for me. I tip my transparent fedora at you!

I think something longer and more complex than this - a significant mystery story - would be an interesting take on the MLP universe. I have no clue if this has been done at all, but your writing style fit the genre nicely.

There've been a few attempts at Equestria Noir.

Hell, I've got an outline for a story that blends noir, gialli, and ponies together in ways that are frankly wrong, and this is me saying that!

However, if you're looking for "oh God, I wish I could write like that" noir, follow the links at the bottom. Eyes Without a Face is heartbreakingly beautiful.

And... well... that "Complete" tag might not be accurate after all, though I don't know if I'm going to come back to Marelow in longer than one-hour chunks.
