It's actually pretty easy to make a basic approximation (note this is based on the relevant FAQ entry and is an educated guess on my end):
Assign each story a 'heat' value as such: ( likes/dislikes + ratings/views ) / time_since_posted
This factors in how well people like it (likes/dislikes), how controversial it is (ratings/views) (the higher this number is the more people cared to leave a rating) and distorts this by how long ago they were posted. Scaling constants removed for brevity (these are usually determined arbitrarily and improved based on feedback). Sort all stories by this metric (stories posted X days ago can be omitted as an optimization), pick first 7 to feature.
I'll think this over for a bit and post my thoughts (and possible improvements) some time later.
I should probably mention I'm a (hobby) programmer.

Since this went off on a tangent (I can be terrible like that) my point is that darf (or any writer) cannot be blamed for 'hogging' the feature box simply because they are popular (maybe I misunderstood and all this is just said in jest? I'm taking it very seriously since I've seen this argument several times).
