Captain Shadow Bastion and his crew of renegades and misfits have spent the years following The Rebellion trading, scheming, and smuggling goods across the Verse, attempting to live free from government control and fat from their efforts. They live their lives in relative peace where the worst thing to befall them might be a stab wound, or the occasional gunshot or two. Nothing they can't handle.

Everything changes, however, when they stumble across a mysterious box and an equally mysterious stallion and his cargo. Now, they are wrapped up in a government conspiracy which threatens to eradicate Ponykind from their galaxy, the government hot on their heels and their lives slowly crumbling around them as they face the unknown to uncover the mysteries surrounding their latest cargo and one little hybrid who may hold the key to saving Ponykind from annihilation.

Following in the footsteps of Joss Whedon's Sci-Fi cult classic Firefly, Leaves on the Wind blends MLP history and style into the Firefly Universe to create a Sci-Fi Epic with new characters to complement Firefly's main protagonists and favorite villains, along with some brand new OC's to spice things up a bit!

Well, this is the first chapter and yes, your editor did a great job of getting this to flow along with your story. I have not yet run into any other sci-fi stories yet, but im also kinda new, so that doesn't matter. :rainbowderp: Good work here, keep it coming.

Close enough to be familiar, but with plenty of originality. I definitely did not expect so much consideration to be put into this, but I was pleasantly surprised. One thing I found odd was that they just went and murdered everybody on board the ships that pursued them, even taking the tone of Firefly rather than MLP I'm pretty sure they usually tried to avoid mass murder and I'm fairly certain their main engine didn't completely obliterate everything on a scale that would be subject to WMD status in real life.

Also a small mistake: I'm not sure exactly what you had planned, but I don't think "inter-helmet helmet" is a good name for a recording device.

You're absolutely right, I didn't even notice I'd made that little slip. Good eye! I will be sure to keep closer tabs on my changes.

Why thank you good Sir. Chapter Two is being edited as we speak, so the wait won't be long

At last something with Firefly!!!!!!!!!!! I've been waiting quite a while for a crossover fic for it.

Well, my good and noble Elven Lord, I hope that you enjoy! By the way, I'm digging the picture: Haldir kicks serious butt!

2086044 And someone who is familiar with some pseudo-obscure LOTR characters(at least in the books). I am impressed good sir!

2087081
Glad I could be that guy! I've always loved the Lord of the Rings for all the minor characters and how they fit into the storyline. It kind of killed me when they barely showed Haldir in the films (especially how they showed his death at Helm's Deep). I always thought he was pretty awesome.

2087861 Yeah I was disappointed about that too. Although I must say that I liked the actor quite a bit.

Also nice to see other Lord of the Rings fans on here.

Amen to that...
which begs the obvious question: has anyone started an awesomely epic (like Fallout:Equestria and Project Horizons-epic) crossover of LOTR?

...and if so: where is it?! :pinkiecrazy:

2090548 Well I've seen a couple of alternate universe stories that recreate it with ponies. Once crossover: http://www.fimfiction.net/story/46583/the-white-rider ]http://www.fimfiction.net/story/46583/the-white-rider
That's all I could find as of yet. You like FoE? I never finished Horizons...................I stopped a few months ago at the Hightower arc. Has it picked up?

I will have to give them a look-see then. I'm curious as to how they would shake a story as rigid and epic as LOTR into a state where they could be original and not too derivative of the original work.

2090562
Sorry! I must have missed your last little bit about FoE and the Hightower thing, or else I would have commented on it right away!

Horizons is amazing, don't get me wrong: its a work which I could only to mimic in scale and complexity. It has picked up a little, but it still suffers from the pedantic pace it has been subject to since it's inception. I plan on following it to it's conclusion, even though that might be a long time. It helps that I love both Fallout and MLP, or else I don't think I would be able to keep up with it like I have been.

2133610 Indeed. Fallout 3 remains my favorite game of all time. Well I'll definitely have to finish Horizons sometime...............after midterms though.

2136165
Amen to that, Fallout 3 is quite incredible. I lent it to a friend of mine (my LOTW editor Coco, actually...) and she has yet to finish it but likes it nonetheless.
Horizons is quite a timesuck, but i love it to death. I can't wait to see how it wraps up!

Yay, new chapter!! Dear lord, please grant me the Serenity. That's all I need, just the Serenity. :pinkiecrazy:

Darn, my pic is dead!! Grr.

It's good to see you're sticking along with me! And I'm working on number 5 right now, so you won't need to wait long for more of that sweet, sweet Firefly goodness!:pinkiehappy:

2153362 I'm glad you made it. I starting watching you from this story, originally. :D :pinkiehappy:

2153706
I most certainly remember, it seems like ages ago...which is weird, because it hasn't been that long at all. :rainbowhuh:
These have been the longest weeks of my life, evidently

I don't think you gave adequate explanation of how Salve came by the highly precise details about Riptide's treatment; I don't even recall you mentioning that the letters had any kind of code that the information could have come from her, and even so I doubt she would have known such information about their plans for her at that stage. Admittedly that part was only there to ALLOW the more important process, and he claims to know nothing after the Dragon-splicing, but I'm not sure where he got any of it from. Maybe that comes later, more related to the process of getting her out which is so far also a mystery.

I do appreciate those details though, Firefly didn't really go much beyond "things to her brain" in comparison with a fairly detailed account of a complex magical/medical hybrid operation and at least a cursory glance into the voices in her head. I personally see the current incarnation as a bit too toned down for the level of insanity that is demonstrated, I'd like to see multiple voices all with their own opinions (all still notably amiable to the "Kill everything" notion) with the resulting mental cacophony drowning out her own thoughts to cause the bouts of particularly violent and unstable outbursts... But there's room for that later, if you wish. Definitely nice to sometimes see what's going on in that unique little head of hers, though I don't think you should show the reader everything all the time.

You've also put some great extra detail into the characters, in general they all (at least the ones in focus this chapter) seem significantly more open and receptive. That may not be necessarily realistic (though we are talking about ponies not humans) but it allows for a faster, steadier pacing to relationship development compared to Firefly, and thus even more opportunity for individual characterization and a more pronounced ability to build up to an overall climax. Alternatively, I could just through out a bunch of words that sound like something I would say if I were an English major instead of Comp. Sci. Seriously, I'm surprised that paragraph even seems to make sense.

Anyways, Admiral Tempest is going to be fun to read about. She seems to be a real "soldier's general", which is a term I just made up to describe how she basically acts just like a soldier would if he was highly dedicated and unburdened by bureaucracy. I'm really not sure why that griffon was so frightened by her threat though, she clearly had more balls than him to start with, so I don't imagine a slight widening of the gap would make a big difference...

2154150 Yeah, fimfic has changed my timing too. I haven't even finished writing my other stories, I've been so preoccupied reading fimfic stories in my spare time. :pinkiecrazy: Hopefully I'll have a better feeling for this site by then. :pinkiehappy:

2155666
ahha! kamil is back!

Yeah, I'm definitely going into detail with her little demons, don't you worry about that. It's fun to imagine what she sounds like when both parts of her conversation (demon + Riptide) get thrown in there. Makes me wonder exactly with River had going on in that noggin of hers. Also, as for him knowing about what was going on, I provided enough detail to explain the dragon-splicing and not a whole lot else, similar to how Simon states he knew about the basics of what they did when he paid whoever it was to help him break River out. Granted, it's a little too much detail, but all shall be explored as the story progresses, and there is some stuff i left out. I also originally planned to explain it fully, but I decided to save that for later. Evidently, that was a good call on my part...

It's good to see you're still around, good sir. I will be posting the next chapter on the site as soon as I can shorten it down, should you still want to be my wonderful and indispensable pre-reader, though I know you're starting to branch out and start your own story and might be a little preoccupied. No sweat, I completely understand if you're busy. If anyone else is reading this wants to pre-read as well, then I would be more than happy for the aide: things are starting to pick up, and I'd love to see various points of view on what happens! Send me a PM and I can get you all set up, the more the merrier!

It's a long, tumultuous day for the crew in the next chapter...you've been warned...plus, more demons. Fun! :pinkiecrazy:

2155667
It's even harder when I wrote most of these chapters, or at least the first revisions of them, back in late December - early January. Leaving them behind, and then coming back to them to edit, and THEN making a profile and starting to post them has been a crazy loop. I haven't even been able to start on #10 seeing as i've been busy with school, but even THAT has been in the works since I made the account. It's a little hectic, so it will be a while until everything is back on track

Okay, I finally sucked up the courage to read this chapter, despite its near insane length. To be honest though, it went by way faster than anything over twenty thousand words should! I like the chapter, and where the story as a whole is going. Poor Riptide, he's got it bad this time... :pinkiehappy:

2346301

I've noticed that too whenever I read through to look for errors: for twenty thousand words, it does seem to go by fast! I guess because there's just a lot going on on multiple storylines.

Given how long it's taken to get this next chapter done, and with all the EqD rigamarole I've been going through, I'm glad to see that people are still reading this story! You can expect a new chapter sometime soon, though it may still be a while given the changes I've made to the story as a whole in my as-of-yet futile efforts to get this story on EqD. We will see how things go.
