Cranberry Muffin

T

"What do you call an earth pony with a horn?"

"I don't know, what?"

"Gusty!"

It was an old joke, one that had never been funny. A unicorn's magic was a huge part of their daily life, after all, and what was a unicorn without proper magic?

Apparently, a joke.

Author's note: This is a two part side story to "We're Gonna Get There Soon". It takes place directly after the chapter entitled "Sunshine" and can stand alone, though it will make slightly more sense in conjunction with "We're Gonna Get There Soon."

"Currents" is meant to be a character study; I had mentioned in a blog post that I intended to flesh out a couple G1 ponies that I find interesting. This is a small part of their story.

And yes, it is intended to be bleak and end exactly as it does.

I'm going to say it now, if you spam my fic with gifs and asinine comments, I will report you.

If, however, you take the time to actually read and legitimately critique my writing, I may gain an iota of respect for you.

I do always read everything I comment on, and your story was nice. Not over the top "THIS IS AWESOME!", but it was nice. 6.6/10.
Paragraphs seemed off at one point, but then came back together.

1641227 Report Regidar? You obviously don't know this site too well...

I'm Wanderer D's fuckbuddy, and me and Alextrasza frequently fap to Nicholas Cage together. Also, Wlah is after my nuts, but I'm a bit turned off by that.

All in all: I'll be here forever.

You've always got the ability to just delete his comments on your stories.

Yeah, but you know that saying "if you strike me down, I'll come back even more powerful than before"? I kind of think that's what he's like.

Instead of deleting and going for petty, I'll just take the highroad and ignore.

This was very good; I really liked Gusty and Gingerbread's awkward-yet-loving dynamic, and the in-depth glimpses at their thoughts.

Plus, the scene with the tree was amazing; Gusty seems to be the last remainder of an ancient time when Unicorn magic was more wild, uncategorical, eldrich even. Very intruiging.

Thank you!

I think things are only awkward for them because Gusty is really awkward. She just doesn't know how to express herself other than through tantrums and surliness.

I played a lot with the concept of G1 unicorn magic versus FiM unicorn magic when writing this. In the original cartoon, the unicorns were really only capable of two kinds of magic: teleportation ("winking"), which all unicorns could do, and their individual special talents, such as Gusty's control over the wind of Fizzy being able to blow bubbles. In FiM, it seems that the unicorns have much more varied magic and all of them are capable of using their magic for a lot of things. I thought it would make an interesting story, bringing Gusty into the FiM world, but keeping her abilities more on par with those of her G1 self. How would she feel, being unable to do things others of her kind could? What would other unicorns think of her if she was a magic failure? I got those questions in my head and needed to answer them!

No problem; I really enjoyed this!

Yeah.

That actually makes a lot of sense, and those answers were good ones. I can tell you put a lot of thought into this!

I definitely put a lot of thought in to it! And it was one of those things that was begging to be written.

1704106 It shows! And indeed; I know how that goes. XD

Good stuff. Thanks for writing this; it was a very refreshing change of pace for me. I've developed an unfortunate policy of snobbily avoiding OC-centric fics, and generally stick with the same familiar stuff I know. As a result, I rarely deal with new characters. But G4-ified G1 ponies count as official, so this is something my strange and annoying standards can let me enjoy.

Anyway, I really like the story you have going here. I was initially unsure about the idea of Gusty and Gingerbread being romantically involved (I'd thought they were just friends in WGGTS), but their awkward relationship works very well, and there's a believeable sense of love to it. Both characters are very well-written and likeable; I found myself instantly caring about them, and wanting to see Gusty work out her problems. I love the idea of her wind-manipulation powers being, like the wind itself, hard to control. Standard FIM unicorn magic is cool and all, but the orderly and scientific nature of it can be a bit dull. So a different, more elemental and 'primal' sort of magic is (I'm sorry) a breath of fresh air. Gingerbread seems a bit generic, but that works fine as a counter to such an abnormal pony as Gusty.

So anyway, I'm very much sold on these characters and their story. Thumbs-up, and I will get started on the sequel sometime in the next few days.

Thanks so much! You give the kind of indepth comments I crave.

Initially, I hadn't really intended to ship them; it was another one of those things that crept up on me. But I liked the idea of it and it stuck. It's meant to be a relationship fraught with problems (most of them Gusty's), but still full of emotion and tenderness (most of that coming from Gingerbread) -- Something I see as very real.

Gusty's magic, I think, is a hold-over from old days, when unicorns relied solely on other unicorns. Back then, it would have been practical and useful, without the pegasi to deal with the weather. I think Gusty is descended from a very long line of Canterlot unicorns, traceable all the way back to the original unicorn tribe. Her special talent is way outdated, but indeed something very primal.

Gingerbread isn't really meant to be anything remarkable; she's just an earth pony who does what she does and enjoys it. She doesn't really aspire to be anything more than she is, and yet somehow wound up dragged along on the emotional rollercoaster ride that is daily life with Gusty.

This piece got to me. It is really good, and I am glad you wrote it. It lifted my spirit, and it makes me happy to be me. It was great.:pinkiehappy:

Thank you so much! I know writing about unknown characters/OCs is kind of a tricky thing, so I'm really glad to know I was able to do it in a way that gets people in their feels

Again, very nice story with a Equestrian version of the G1 Pony. Her attiude is a little diffrent, but she still has a lot in common with her G1 counterpart.Loved how gingerbread calmed her, as well

As I've mentioned to a few other readers, I don't see much in the way of character development with the G1 ponies. Like most 80s cartoon characters, they kind of fall flat and remain very two-dimensional. I took little bits of Gusty's kind of abrassive personality and worked it into something utterly surly, which has been fun to work with.

I've also enjoyed playing with the concept of the limited magic of the G1 unicorns verses the all-encompassing, use-it-for-everything magic of the FiM unicorns. Melding the two universes into one has been an interesting experience; but I do plan on doing more with the kind of in between world I've created. Fanon and headcanon are so fun! :derpytongue2:

A nice story. I'm going to go read your other story about Gusty now.

Thanks. The second story kind of goes much more indepth. I hope you enjoy it!

Beautiful story. I always like seeing G1 references, but even without them this story would have been lovely.

Bonus points if you manage to read all of Gusty's lines in Bart Simpson's voice. :raritywink:
