Blinkie Pie swung a pick axe in her magic, breaking apart a rock. Inside shone a glittering gem, which she pocketed. Rock farming was rewarding work. It was made even easier by their new-found ability to use magic. "How are you doing, Inky?" she asked.
Her sister, Inky Pie, looked up. "Very good. Thank you for asking."
Then the day continued on as normal because Pinkie Pie's family is boring.

Honestly, though? This could be a good chance to let your imagination run wild. Not even canon can we understand how 'rock farming' actually works. Maybe you can go into a bit more detail into how it's supposed to work.

I understand why you made them break rocks for jems, but that wouldn't make them rock miners, in my oppinion;
It would make them miners or crystal hunters.
I wanted to suggest one of the many one-off characters of the show, but my mind kept coming back to the same conlusion, and every time I did, I thought to myself, "Oh no... No no no no no!"

1751976 I second that. it feels like a bit of a cop-out to assume they're boring. We know nothing about Colgate other than fanon but her intermission was quite fun.

I'm sorry, but if you think the Pie sisters are boring, you've obviously never read either the Ask the Pie Sisters tumblr or half the fics that feature them in a major role.

Correction. They are boring to you. If I've learned anything is that NO character is 100% loved or hated in the pony-fandom.
