OOOHHHH
Hoo boy, its like reading This Platinum Crown. Everyone seems to be out to control the one character for various reasons. Bastion's got his own motives, Archer wants power, Luna and Celestia want Equestrian Peace, all that stuff.
Good chapter. Wow, Twi seems to be a really good teacher, if he's picking stuff up almost as quickly as she did.
And bastion wants a super weapon
That was an exact quote after reading what he said last! He's going to try to get too powerful, he'll want to control the night. Archer appears to be the kind of pony who goes power hungry, he pretty much already is. I honestly have no problem admitting I want him gone, maybe even dead. Can't wait to see his foreboding fate.
Great chapter! Bastion and Archer have me concerned though. I'm not sure I'd consider them a threat or anything at this point, but they are definitely making me nervous.

Ok now I'm even more curious (and confused). What are they planning?
Oh, you poor colt full of delusions of grandeur. You will never have the kind of power Twilight wields.
What are those 2 planning?
Something heinous no doubt...
This is going to backfire something horribly.
Gah, he's gonna control the night and explode! I can tell!
Hmmm...New plot arc. Where is this going???
2635876 Honestly, I'm kinda surprised it isn't against some policy to teach someone, who's element is fire, shadow magic. Unless Twi already has her suspicions, and is using Archer to uncover another underground plot. Get em Twiger.
Have to agree with the below that Archer seems like one who would try to control the night and either die in the attempt or be rendered magically sterile. Of course, the possibility occurs to me that his and Bastion's plan might be to KILL the night-goddess-whatever-thingy. So. . . guess I just watch and wait.
I knew he'd be somthin' but I can't really tell if it's bad news er jus' news.
2636019 Well shadow magic has the possibility of making him modest and respectable... Imagine if he was taught the power of the sun? He would command force and would gain great power from it. At least if he tries to control shadow magic he dies, here's to hoping he does.
It's been an enjoyable read thus far, but I'm struggling with one key point. I know that this is being presented as one big, contiguous story...but in all honesty I get the impression that I'm reading through a number of shorter, separate stories. I think the confusion on my part stems from my inability to identify any sort of "master arc" that ties everything together into a larger whole.
2635925 Indeed. Luna is the princess of the night, and the shadow magic goddess thing chose Twilight over Luna That says something
Why do I get the feeling there's a bit of a red herring in this plot?
2636148
Okay, this is another one of those literature terms that I vaguely remember, but can't recall accurately.
WHAT THE FUCK IS A RED HERRING.
Google! C'mere!
-edit-
I am not NEARLY a good enough author to mislead or misdirect anyone. Like, at all. Seriously, no trickery here.
2636156 Oh... so what you're saying is Bastion is going to use Archer for some sort of power grab?
2636192
Or...?
You didn't give a second option.
2636207 Typo. I had a second idea but it was basically the same as the first.
2636215
Oh. Well they're both wrong.
2636241 Oh good! I love it when I'm wrong about these things.
Lets give a hand to the new power-grabbing dumbass this arc!
2636263
HOORAY FOR THE DUMB ASSESS! i so hope he get's his ass kicked.
This more or less became a reading on an oc character and less on Twilight. It's starting to lose task of what some of the original or previous story was about. It's not a bad story but I'm trying to wonder when will it get back to its roots.
Oh for crying out loud.... here's hoping Bastion is doing this for the benefit of all cuz damn.... i really liked him.
2636125 Twilight becoming the archmage, and her dealings in said position. Kinda like a show series. Not every episode has something to do with all the other episodes aside from the characters themselves, in a season.
But I get where your coming from. This could very well be broken up into separate books like how Lapis-Lazuli has done with his dark twilight stories. Epic reads btw.
Link to the picture :3
Pls
Saw that coming.

What picture? The cover photo? You can click on the lower left-hand corner for the source.
So- Bastion betrays Twilight's trust to get himself a super soldier? But why? I'm sure, if he had asked, Twilight would have been more than willing to teach some of the guard about other schools of magic.... Hmm....
The plot thickens. (And I don't mean Twi's sexy badonkadonk)
Really? Is Bastion evil? If he is, then that would be a bit dissapointing.
I will see this chapter as Bastion getting Archer trained as his replacement or Archer is a super soldier, so far I don't see Twilight having a problem
with this. Really hope Bastion's plan is not evil just ends up stupid in the end.
I am really hoping that Archer is bad, Bastion is good but has his own motivations (A replacement in itself is not a bad motivation)
I am really interested to see where this leads but please try and make sure the payoff is bigger than the outcome of the library, that was a bit of a let down and this is kind of looking like it is almost a little too rushed.
In any case loving the work and I hope to see more of what happens!
Seriously, is EVERYONE on that damned council corrupt/evil/whatever?
Geeze Celestia, how could you not pick up on that? Now poor Twilight has to clean up the mess.
I look forward to when Archer finally meets the Night for the first time... and the resultant envy he gets when he sees the difference between what he's gifted with from the night compared to what Twilight received.
2636481 That isn't really a Master Arc. That's like saying the Master Arc of Harry Potter was him dealing with being a wizard. While accurate, it is far too broad.
To be honest, this story would probably be better served as separate books. Still loving it though.
May the night take his soul.
I said in the last chapter that I didn't like Archer.
This chapter just makes me dislike him even more... I fear that Blaze's journal wasn't destroyed, and Bastion read it.

The "roots" of the story is Twilight becoming and training to be an Archmage. She may be a full on Archmage now, but there are still trials ahead of her, there is still the last part of the prophecy.
Archer/Bastion's motives are still hidden, they may well be benign. Bastion is set to retire, or looking to improve Equestria's military might through advanced magical soldiers... or he's setting up for a coup.
It seems odd that he'd send another in place in that case though, as Archer is his agent, and is ideally, going to become more powerful than Bastion is, it makes sense that their goals are more benign than a coup. We'll see though...
Archer's going to learn the power of the Night, but I doubt he'll be able to draw nearly as much as Twilight can. Her power is truly off the scale with other magics, and it seems, even if the source is different for shadow magic, the pony still has to have the raw ability to manage it.
hmmm...
Bastion isn't a bad guy, so I doubt what he's doing is 'evil' or straight up trying to control Twilight. It's gotta be something in Equestria's best interests, and possibly in Twilight's as well. I doubt he would do something that he knew would lead to hurting Twilight...
Humm. Well, I guess we'll see, won't we?
well... that's ominous.

Well, considering that in MLP storyline, there were 3 tribes, Earth Ponies did harder work of farmers and could keep only 1/3 of food for themselves, Pegasi controlled weather and maybe offered military protection for 1/3 food so at last they assisted farmers a bit, but Unicorns, all they did was raise sun and moon, it seems like 1 time casting spell by hundreds of Unicorns at the same time then long day of hard work ( Unicorns could contribute more for 1/3 food ), and Unicorn leader was Queen so it suggest she held herself as superior.
And in current Equestria, Earth Ponies still work mostly on farm, Pegasi in military and weather management and transport, while Unicorns hold high position in government and also are in military, not to mention that every single noble in Canterlot is Unicorn and with some exception they are all useless, no wonder Twilight did not made any friends in there, not much point in trying in the first place.
I, DON'T, UR, PFFT, SHIT.
Stop making my brain try to think in a story that is a head cannon. IT'S ANNOYING!
Tell me now, and I won't be a total dickbag and call this shameless clop to disown your Asian level writing skillz. GIVE ME SOME FOOD FOR THOUGHT DAMNIT, A RIDDLE, SOMETHING!
Something wicked this way comes. . .
Vows to the guard? What, they're the Night's Watch now?
That makes Shining Armor super confusing, if so.
Okay, Loyal...
... It's. Its. We keep talking about this.
We keep talking about this problem, Loyal.
Archer starts, studies under Twilight.
Or at least that’s how he shows himself
it could be subteruge
As it stands, Bastion just might
have some plans before long
so no forgetting your goals, fake a smile.
Just what this plan is is anybody's guess for a while.
but don't look now, she's staring
you haven’t been laid by a girl...
But you know, that she’s judging.
She’s learning, she’s teaching.
Don't question her methods, she'll be cross.
So start nervously grinning.
She walked up and asks who you are!
So you can tell her the truth.
You can't be seen lying, element be darned.
And so there’s a change, in your intentions.
And all these memories come rushing
of passion, rage and of fire.
Of the world of incidents,
ones she saw fit to bring to mind.
And you feel restless and breathless
and lost in the passage of time.
Then she leaves, for reasons you don’t know.
But she makes sure you saw her.
You remind her of someone called "Bolt"?
As she walks out the door,
your blood boiling
your stomach in ropes.
Oh and what will you do
“Is that it? It looks like you’ll need a good bone.”
Then you walk, under the streetlights.
And you’re too dumb to notice,
the pretty girls are staring at you.
You just don’t know what you look like,
the world is wondering who you'll screw.
You just have to meet her.
You just have to meet her.
You just have to meet her.
You just have to meet her.
You just have to meet her.
You know that she’s waiting for you...
Sorry if this isn't my best work to date, this song just happens to be particularly poignant to me today. My girlfriend got a new boyfriend yesterday and told me about it today because, get this, she simply forgot we were dating. I don't know how...
Ok it seems like a lot of hate is going to Archer and Bastion. Bastion for having an agent near Twilight to eventually ask a question and Archer for having some ambition. These actions and qualities don't have to mean that they are a precursor to ill intent or Archer being a power hungry individual out to just advance himself.
I'll admit that Bastion seems a bit odd in this chapter. When he visits Archer his guesses as to his lessons are all destructive in nature. This makes me think that he is suspicious of Twilight. Yes I know that the placement of an agent close to Twilight and making promises to advance his military career does seem to point to ill intent, but let's review a few things Twilight has done. She destroyed a mountain side in a fit of rage, attacked a princess with magics strong enough to destroy the landscape (look at said mountain), and had the night almost take her over. Yes Twilight has mellowed out and seems to have control but she still did these things and is very close to the Princesses and in a position of power. Bastion is the captain of the guard and so it's his responsibility to ensure the safety of Equestria from all threats. It would make sense to place someone close to Twilight to keep tabs on her.
So now Bastion needs somepony he can trust and also skilled enough to learn different magics and catch Twilight's attention for becoming an apprentice. Archer fits the qualities so Bastion tells him of the mission. Being a very risky mission, he would give Archer more incentive, like a promotion and a good record that could eventually get him to captain when Bastion retires years down the road, to get him to volunteer. It could have also gone that Archer asked for reward for spying. We can also say that learning under the Archmage herself would be a motivational factor as well. Overall, this is a lifetime opportunity for Archer to get ahead in his career and learn magic that very few could learn. He'd be a fool not to take it.
Now let's get to Archer's power thirst. He doesn't have to be evil to want power. I'm sure we have all read a story were a good person wants or needs power. "Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely" does come to mind but if you want to say that, look at Twilight's power level or Celestia's. "But they are the good guys and don't abuse their power" Yes they are good but that doesn't mean Archer can't be the same way. "But he's scheming behind the scenes to get his promotion unfairly" Welcome to the world, you can't believe that everyone got their positions "fairly" and that only bad guys do that.
Let's also think on Twilight's lessons to Archer. She first made him learn elemental magic to get a feel of his disposition and confirm her reports of him. This also revealed to Archer his flaws and good points. He has a better understanding of himself and can now watch make sure to not make mistakes based on his flaws. Next, Twi teaches him nature magic. This would teach Archer to learn patience and the value of all life around him and would help him learn self control and empathy towards others. Now she is going to teach him shadow magic. Remember the lessons that Twi learned from this. It's about submitting control, putting your trust in another, and finding intimacy. All great lessons to balance out Archer, and the archmage is all about balance isn't she. This could suggest that Twilight is well aware of Archer's ambition for power and that she is giving these lessons to make sure that he doesn't abuse it or get destroyed by it.
Now of course this is merely conjecture and could very well be off the mark from what is actually happening. But this guess is just as possible as a coup in the making or other evil intent from Bastion and Archer.
