It was the assassination of Arch Duke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne in Sarajevo by a Serbian Nationalist sect, The Black Hand. It happened after a earlier assassination attempt. The Austrian-Hungarian royalty then declared war on Serbia on the 28th July 1914. So yeah, it was because of this The Great War started, thus it was the Serbians, not the Germans who started it!!
